Album za melaholični kraj dobre večeri

Was quite excited to hear this as im a huge fan of Nick Cave. Comparisons and refernces always point to Scott. The music was just not to my taste. Too much orchestra, his voice was ok and lyrics alright, but the music just put me off. Possibly it's a grower and I'm missing out. Who knows.

Bravo. I'll take this over the Tim Buckley's and Nick Drake's of the vastly overrated cult sect. And unlike Leonard Cohen, I find Scott Walker's voice oftentimes majestic. Walker seemed to be as genuinely fucked up and averse to fame as Buckley and Drake, but he outlived those fuckers by a long shot, dying in 2019 at the age of 76. I suppose that's a blessing: Walker was spared being around for the Covid Pandemic. I can't imagine how depressed that would have made him (just listen to "It's Raining Today" from his previous album to hear how distraught he'd get over the weather; this dude didn't feel the same elation about rain as Eddie Rabbit did). His songs aren't as depressing here, although I actually enjoy the songs where Walker leans into his melancholy side. I have a sneaky suspicion we'll have a Scott Walker Renaissance in the near future.

Just didn't sit right for me

Melodic, but full of cheese. Did not enjoy.

Too much orchestration in the instrumentals or drama in Walker's vox to feel genuine. Frustrating because songs like 'Old Man' masterfully blur the line between genres while remaining catchy, yet such hits are few and far between on this LP.

Dull and passionless

It just sounds like a 60s album. There are some curious riffs, but overall not my type of music.

Pleasant, but a bit boring. Where Sinatra seemed cool, Scott Walker seems overly serious, a little dark, and no very interesting. Seventh Seal and Rhymes of Goodbye are probably best.

I like the song about the Seventh Seal I guess... It's hard to tell if this is pure cheese or inspired pre-Bowie early art/glam pop. Still didn't really resonate with me.

ok this is 1969 but the cover doesn't scream folk psychedelia, or even beatles-y pop! I'm still disappointed in advance, but almost intrigued in a way. ok this is... strange? it's pop music, but kinda dark and the guy's deeper voice (is this a baritone?) gives it a bit of a moody character or something. but I don't mind it at all. even by the end of the album I could've done a bit more of it. 3/5.

Outdated; very "old" sounding, and not in a good way. Very slow and no song was memorable. No hooks and no traditional verse-chorus-bridge structure, so it makes for a tedious listen. Instrumentation is fantastic though. Really enjoy the strings and other orchestral features. This along bumps it up a star. 5/10.

Never heard of this guy before. Nothing blew me away, though Track 7 at least has some kick ass Serge Gainsbourg-like bass playing (might have been the same bass player who later played on Histoire de Melody Nelson - no one seems to be sure). Anyway, I heard it. Only 998 albums to go!

Ok so I thought it was a lot more grounded than Scott 2. I had it on over the home speakers and while nothing grabbed me I thought it was a descent album with some great talent. 3.1.

Okay, this absolutely rocks. Atmospheric, great voice, great backing music...I'm in.

Easy listening fayre...not too freaky like some of his other stuff

Classy album full of colour, one of the few ‘crooners’ who I enjoy listening to, lyrically and musically engaging all the way through. And the baseline on ‘’The Old Man’s Back Again’ is something else!

A total surprise. Every individual element of this album combines perfectly to create a beautiful and effortless listening experience. Will definitely come back to this but I am also now intrigued to explore more of Scott Walker’s work.

It was alright. Surprisingly, it scratched a certain itch for me. Although it was a bit medieval sounding, that's the noise it was going for, and it did it well. The orchestra was fantastic in delivering that feel, and as much as I don't enjoy that type of music, this album kept my interest. Favorite track: The Seventh Seal

The first song is really the best on the album. It showcases what every other song has to bring while also having the best lyrics and composition. The rest of the album pales in comparison to this song, so it's hard to rate this above a two because the other nine songs felt so disappointing. Highlights: 2.

The music is pretty cool in “The Seventh Seal” but these lyrics and vocal delivery throughout the album are comically over the top.

Seventh Seal is wild... was it all about a chess match? Or a battle between life and death? Hero of the War hits — definitely a post 1969 (post 1968) song, very anti-war with an ironic jolly tune The Old Man’s Back Again — a song about Stalin of all people 😳 but it’s well written (with a bad pronunciation of Ivan) Overall: interesting album. Not sure if I’ll relisten, but I’ll give Scott his due as a songwriter.

Kind of jazzy pop, worth another listen

Fine as background noise, but nothing that really stood out to me. My favorite song was the opening track, The Seventh Seal. Sounded best when it sounded ripped off of other bands of the era. Voice was kinda like a cross between Elvis and Morrissey.

I can’t help but visualize this dude as a bard with a lute traveling the countryside singing his stories. Smooth voice and the backing music is nice, but the style isn’t my favorite.

Silky smooth voice, reminds me a lot of Richard Hawley

As a teenager in the mid 90s reading about music in the NME and Q, this was always mentioned in hushed tones as one of the all-time greats so I went in with high expectations and was initially disappointed. The Morricone-esque opener aside, the first few tracks on first listen seem on first listen quite standard MOR crooner territory. However as the album progresses and you tune into Walker's dark songs (touching on subject matter like Bergman films, the Warsaw Pact and PTSD) through his beautifully rich voice, it clicks into place. The second half becomes more musically varied and ambitious. On second listen, I loved it all and it feels like a proper album that builds and flows - the perfect length at 30 minutes too. It also got me listening to some of his later, avant-garde output too which seems right up my street - The Drift in particular feels like a horror movie on record. не сказать, что это мой любимый альбом Скотта (вероятно будет все-таки Tilt), но статус легендарного заслуживает, хотя бы просто за огромный fuck you попсе и прогиб своей линии. Сейчас странно осознавать, что именно этого альбом из сольников Волкера провалился, ибо песни же цепляющие, а тёмная тема для исполнителя хита про сгнившие зубы амстердамского моряка вроде не пиздец какая странность. Но имеем что имеем, да и без этого не было бы толчка к полному срыву границ и ухода в авангард. Ну и плюс влияние на всяких мастодонтов по типу Тома Йорка и Дэвида Боуи тоже кое о чем говорит. Хороший альбом, красивый, печальный, величественый. Жалко две песни по качеству подводят (думаю сразу понятно какие), а в остальном вообще балдеж, дисс на Сталина имеет одну из самых пиздатых басовых линий, что я знаю. Это 10

Приятный, лёгкий альбом. Но когда пытаюсь вспомнить, какой трек зашёл, в голове играет какой-нибудь Andmoreagain. Только дело в том, что это трек группы Love, вышедший 2 годами ранее. О которых я даже относительно давно не вспоминал уже. Посему пришёл для себя к выводу, что конкретности и внятности, "лица" альбому немного всё же не хватает. Впрочем, на момент прослушивания ощущения звуковых обоев вроде бы нет. Трек про Старого мужика посвящён сталинизму. Думаю, хотя бы куплет можно посвятить тому, что именно благодаря Сталину были осуществлены индустриализация, культурная революция, ускорена урбанизация, достигнуты успехи в науке и, не в последнюю очередь, Великой Отечественной войны. Без взгляда с этой стороны текст трека нахожу некорректным.

Scott Walker treads the line of singer-songwriter as he puts in an album to find his purpose. Sadly, the lyrics and music aren't enough to captivate or inspire confidence in his abilitieis.

Scott Walker's production has always been a little unhinged, but some of the songs on this record really work for me. A nice combination of interesting lyrics to dive into, big string arrangements and some dark harmonies. Fav tracks: The Seventh Seal, Hero of the War, The Hold Man's Back Again

Really enjoyed revisiting this one. Scott Walker has such a striking voice and singular perspective in his writing. I was surprised that I found it a little less compelling than I did when I first listened to this album maybe a decade ago. Still, a really strong collection of memorable songs. My favourite is either "The Seventh Seal" or "Hero of the War". 4.5/5

This is a 30-min endless sad song. His voice is really nice but all the songs are just the same monotonous tone, it feels like a huge waste of potential.

Scott 4 is a masterpiece. Hero of the War, Old Man Back, Duchess, most songs here are fantastic and bear multiple listens. The drama in his voice is sincere rather than overdone or lame, production is stellar, lyrics are incredible even on their own. Indescribably better than the politician.

Ballad king, bit of a mixed bag. Some really good, but also some forgettable tracks.

The guy is a little bitch and let's it be known with his singing

Viel prachtig samen met mijn rustige morgen, vandaar de 4 sterren. Op elke andere dag: 2 of 3, afhankelijk van hoe chagrijnig ik ben...

Moet eerlijk bekennen dat ik deze Scott wel iets beter trok dan de vorige. Deed me in de verte ook aan de stem van David Eugene Edwards van Wovenhand denken. Maar het blijft toch net iets teveel croonen.

Musically simplistic, his voice ain’t no show stoppa and lyrically pretty poor. I know lyrics don’t have to rhyme or anything but for me this just sounds like this dude is just making it up as he goes along.

Some nice melodies, but not really my thing. Reminded me a little of Nick Cave (vocally only, and not nearly as good imo) End of the album was strongest. Dutchess was quite nice

Ja ja, daar issie weer - onze kwelgeest Scott Walker. Zo'n beetje het hele oeuvre van die man wordt blijkbaar gezien als briljant. Maar niet naar mijn maatstaven.

Ik gaf hem het voordeel van de twijfel, maar toen hij begon te 'mmmmmm-en' in liedje vier, was de maat vol. De stem gaat overigens verder wel, maar die Chinese-restaurant-muziek op de achtergrond is niet te doen.

This album was disappointing for me as it's meant to be so influential. I did like The Old Man's Back Again, though.

Really interesting mix of song styles with some quite weird stuff going on. Can see the influence on Richard Hawley, Jack White, Alex Turner and others. 2nd half much better than the first. Old Man and Get Behind Me are brilliant.

1969, baroque pop, chilli milli

This album really comes and goes. It's barely half an hour long! Scott is a good singer. His voice is ethereal and deep; not the kind of voice you hear too often on a pop album. This was nice to listen to, but I'm done now, thanks.

I know it's not for everyone, but I got into Scott Walker after died the year before last. Ingmar Bergman forever.

I love Scott Walker but perhaps more so when he is part of the Walker Brothers band. I listened to this twice, and enjoyed more on the second listen. Beautiful orchestral music by a talented composer

De inicio no me gustó, me parecía un sonido medio repetitivo y una voz que canta como en estilo crooner pero metiendo todavía el triple de vibrato y que simplemente sonaba demasiado raro. Lo escuché un par de veces más y comencé, si bien no a adorarlo, al menos a entender un poco su sentido. Musicalmente y en cuanto a producción es un disco interesante, muy bien nivelado y que tiene más variedad de la que le agarré al inicio; primero me parecía que todas las canciones sonaban con ese sonsonete que suena tal cual a Ennio Morricone que tiene la primera canción, pero realmente no, lo que sí tienen es que a veces se siente un poco exagerada la orquestación y como si quisiera hacer las cosas mas "épicas" de lo que son realmente. Con el tiempo el sonido detalladamente melancólico y las letras bien hechas le dan más y más puntuación. Encontré que David Bowie produjo un documental sobre él y justo lo acabo de ver... era una persona bastante interesante y de hecho por lo que vi y lo poco que jalé ahorita rápido de YouTube, su música de años más adelante me agradaría mucho más. Creo que sí tiene un lugar aquí, creo que tiene cosas meritorias, me agrada lo que escribe, pero su manera de cantar, al menos en este album, no me termina de convencer.

Se me hizo monótono. Sí está bien hecho, un par de letras de me gustaron pero nada que me volara la cabeza. Las mejores son The World's Strongest Man y Hero Of The War. 2.5 estrellas que suben a 3.

Oh yeah, strong start. Like a Tom Jones 007 feel. I like the spaghetti western sound of "The Old Man's Back Again". The only one I didn't like was "Boy Child". There's something about the way he sings that makes it difficult for me to take it totally serious, but I found it a fun and enjoyable listen.

Brand new to this music and I absolutely love this album, might turn into a baroque pop nerd thanks to this album.

Avant garde and avant odd, Scott 4 is like one of those twisty metal statues you'd find in a statue gallery - kinda quirky and imposing from far away, but a lot more detailed up close. That is to say, I don't know how to review music, and this is all coming out of my ass. Definitely deserves a second listen, especially when I'm not playing GTA.

Wow, this was difficult to get through. I own a later Walker album called Drift, which is quite different as he got experimental.

I'm a huge fan of his 78 album "Nite Flights" with the Walker Brothers and his more experimental output that came after but less excited by his earlier material. Can definitely hear where Bowie took some inspiration for vocal phrasing here and there. The song that I like the most on this one is "Boy Child" - it's the closest thing to the strange and suspenseful mood he creates in his later work that I love so much.

I get why people like Scott Walker, a few of the tracks I ike but in general a bit underwhelming for me. On Your Own Again is probably my favorite track.

Apparently baroque pop is a thing and apparently it's a subgenre of rock and not pop. Either way I liked this album. It's just a man singing his songs accompanied with melodic rock music.

Este tipo le echa DEMASIADA crema a sus tacos en cuestión de locución. Es una lástima porque algunas canciones comienzan muy bien, y se cagan cuando el dude comienza a cantar con su voz toda mamona. No me sorprende nada que el disco nunca haya estado en algún “chart”

Parece ser sacado de un soundtrack de película ochentera de época. Tal vez otro de sus trabajos tenga mas trascendencia que este disco pero no le veo mayor importancia como para ocupar un lugar en la lista.

No terminé de encontrarle lo interesante a este disco. En mi opinión, el rollo del "pop barroco" y ponerle violines, clavicordio y órgano de iglesia no le aporta gran cosa y su voz se vuelve muy cansada, llena de un dramatismo innecesario, que me recuerda a los cantantes ochenteros que les gustaban a nuestras mamás, tipo Raphael o Camilo Sesto, o de vocalista de Goth Metal pero sin su banda. De todos modos, alcanzo a rescatar 'Get Behind Me' que es la única un poco más pop.

Interesting Lyrics, voice is a little dated but interested to hear more

My favourite unheard album so far, it's very cool. Big baritone voice, flamenco guitar, strings, Gregorian chanting AND some scatting. The Old Man's Back Again is my highlight - the bass line is wild

Not sure I've ever listened to him before now. Interesting sound, as it floats between the music of the psychedelic period and the easy listening of artists like Tom Jones. Probably wouldn't listen to this for fun, but I get why it would make this list.

It's kind of light and full old-timey music, big-voiced male singer with lots of vibrato, very Sinatra-esque. Not realllly my thing but I like it alright! Good for expanding horizons.

First few notes brought up Nic Cave. Ended with thoughts about Stone Roses and Teenage Fanclub.

A very warm album. Amazing voice, his storytelling is top notch if not a little cheesy at time but that just adds to the character I guess. The world's strongest man is my fav definitely.

First half was stronger than the second half, but I would definitely give this one another listen. The record was lush and Scott's voice was super pleasant.
