fun
i think i’ve been too critical of albums lately. if i was on a first date with a guy and he was like yeah this album represents who i am as a person, would i go on a second date with him? yeah. not an excited yeah but a yeah nonetheless. 4/5.
Somewhat familiar with some of Culture Clubs music due to listening to pop rock radio through the years. This album overall did not stand out to me and I’d be hesitant to revisit personally. I’ll stick with the popular hits for now although I did find parts of Boy George’s wiki page fascinating! Happy listening all!
"Karma Chameleon" is an iconic banger of a new wave song, but as a complete package, the album leaves a bit to be desired. This list fed me Duran Duran's 'Rio' the day prior, which for a new wave record feels tight and energetic for the entire duration. But Boy George's vocals do a TON of heavy lifting and elevate it up from 3 to 4 stars for me.
3.75 out of 5 stars for Colour By Numbers. much higher than I expected, but it really is tight. couple of slow songs, but mostly bangers. Black Money and Mister Man are the surprises for me, other than It's a Miracle which is the gem off this album. Boy George's singing is beautiful, sad that it got worse over the years. I love the reggae influences, and I would put this one into a not-your-typical 80's new wave cash grab. A truly good album.
It was nice to revisit this one after all these years, brought back some memories of me and my sister as wee girls George caused such a stir at the time and good for him. Actually this holds up surprisingly well. The worst thing for me is Helen Terry’s contributions which are grating. Don’t remember finding her annoying back in the day. 3.5 rounding up for the nostalgia
cool album.
good- technically rock but felt more pop, at first i wasn’t in the mood for 80s music, but this was really good and lots of fun. my favorite song is black money
Wanted to hate, couldn't Karma chameleon It's a miracle I'm only trying to help you
a good highway listen -- i think 4 is generous but i was feeling generous, sue me
This is #day637 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… somehow I'd never listened to Culture Club before, even though I was aware of them, so this was another first-timer for me. This record fits well into the patchwork of '80s new wave, though it obviously leans toward the poppier side of things, somewhere near, say, Erasure. What stops me from giving this a 5, though, is the vocals. I'm just not a big fan of soul/R&B-style singing. Otherwise, this is a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day638.
So much better than I anticipated.
Surprisingly good actually.
Pretty solid pop album.
Hit after hit after hit after hit.
Honestly I had only heard Karma Chameleon, so to hear the rest of the album was pretty cool. I could dig this. 5/2/26
Solid old favorite.
I remember listening to this album for the first time on an airplane and absolutely vibing for the entirety. And yep.... still hits just the same.
I grew up with Culture Club being a guilty pleasure. The guilt is gone.
The first impression the album gives is of a not so good one, and the only very catchy song is Karma Chameleon; but if you pay attention to it and really give it the time to listen to the songs, it shows some interesting and well made songs. It's good to point out that some songs sound similar, with not too much going on, but overall it's a good album.
This is so kitsch… I love it.
Nostalgia in record form. And a pretty great pop album to boot. Favorites: It's a Miracle, Miss Me Blind Would I listen to it again: Yes
So nostalgic.
Really Great!
The biggest achievement of this album is not to be overshadowed by the ubiquitous perfect pop of the undeniably great 'Karma Chameleon'. There is enough blue-eyed soul meets funk meets pop, to more than hold its own. Following Sam Cooke it can come across as a little feeble at times, but certainly revels in its camp poppiness. 'The Church of the Poison Mind' is a bona fide banger, which expertly melds Stock-Aitken-Waterman influencing pop with Motown (and was ripped off by Wham). In fact the influence on George Michael feels significant, also with the ballad 'That's the Way'. This sort of album could come off so badly, ersatz soul; but its love of Motown and pop combine very well in the era of new-wave.
normie music but good
First song straight up I’m at the 80s disco wow. PLS LET ME GO TO A DISCO NOW. This is so mix of George Michael and Frankie Goes to Hollywood I adore . Changing Every Day is so fabbbbb wow I LOVE! So far the whole album is just an amazing journey that I don’t want to end it’s so joyful and full of colors, perfect for summer. Mystery Boyyyyy hold me everyone my hips are going crazy Romance Revisited was such a sweet ending, no lyrics but a beautiful melody like an end of the movie I loved this !!
Yes throwback!
I'm not quite sure but I think that I bought this album back then. Surprised that I know so many tracks from this album. On the other hand, several tracks sound quite similar, but not the boring way. +1 for its culture impact in that decade.
I got really tired of the singles from this group when they came out, but I actually enjoyed this album more than I expected to. It's pop, fluff, but still fun and worth listening to.
A bit more depth to their music than a lot of other bands from that era. I remember the hits, but the “deep cuts” are really good, too.
Jazzy sound and a lot of fun, with little effort going into the lyrics.
Frankly forgot how much fun some of this music is!
Better than expected. I think it stands up over time as it's more R&B/Soul than new wave or pop.
Hot take - Karma chameleon is so Australian coded, tell me a song that better conjures the feeling of being outside on a hot summer day, and then coming in to watch some free to air 90s/00s tv with a Calippo. Real evocative musical imagery from this English band that strikes a chord deep within me and I will not be paying attention to any other actual lyrics or meaning!! I always like the fun bounciness of New Wave bands so enjoyed the album tracks I had not heard before. Mystery boy went off, and Romance Revisited was such an unexpected but fun, camp end.
After all these years I still don’t know what a karma chameleon is.
It's a bop.
Better than expected. I like the funky vibes mixed with intentional lyricism.
Analogue audio really peaked in the early 80s, before the influx of 12bit digital audio products. Good songs throughout, beautifully played, sung and mixed, albeit with very little going on in the high end. An 80s soul classic.
This was a hard one. I love the 80s but even I bulked at some of the drums and aynths on this, and some of the softer songs. But the second half really picked up with Miss Me Blind onwards (with a great and unexpected guitar solo). I could see myself listening and liking again. So fine. A low 4.
rip i didn’t know boy george was in a band. karma chamelon is a banger
I generally liked the album, I was surprised to see it was rated relatively lowly. There were some of their biggest hits, and the songs were pretty fun. Overall an enjoyable listen.
I know a lot of this album is pretty filler but I just love the vibe so much I’m giving it a 4
Stand-out tracks: Karma Chameleon - it is a hit for a reason It's A Miracle - although the vocals are a bit repetitive, the instrumentals are nice, especially the sax Changing Every Day - love the brief jazzy moments added in That's The Way - just the piano and vocals alone are nice Miss Me Blind - that guitar solo at the end pleasantly surprised me Mister Man - the beat has a bit more of a reggae and the saxophone is once again a nice addition Victims - stands out as a more dramatic, ballad-like track The album is just a good vibe with some tracks trying to somewhat branch out of the typical 80s pop/new wave style, but most staying comfortably within their genre, possibly to their detriment. Not all of the tracks are stand-outs, but I probably wouldn't skip any of them upon relisten. Overall a pleasant listen, but I wouldn't call it a masterpiece. Would give it a 4.5 if I could.
a good album. Karma Chameleon is such a classic 7/10 4/5
Fun, suave, vibey
Maybe it’s nostalgia but this album brought me great joy.
That Helen Terry belting backups... Whoa. So good with George's smooth vocals. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed CC. Best album ever? No, but several bangers. Favorite tracks? Karma Chameleon. , Black Money, Church of the Poison Mind, Miss Me Blind, ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Liked it very very much. Saved tracks
I don't listen to a lot of pop but really liked this, the vocals are great and I like the really varied instrumentation.
Forgot all about this album. Not a particular fan at the time but must have heard it loads. Sounded great this time round.
Better than I expected for sure.
love culture club wel
Awesome funky songs,
An interesting listen and one that leaves me a bit in two minds. Obviously it has the hits which generally stand up well, The Church of the Poison Mind in particular. Then it has some pretty lightweight poppy numbers that have that early 80s pop sound that hasn’t necessarily aged that well. And then it has the soulful numbers which are genuinely good. In particular That’s the way is an excellent way to end that first side and both works in an 80s sense and as a darned decent piece of music. I listened three times so it can’t be bad at all. But then I was a teenager when this was released so it’s very much my era. It’s somewhere between a 3 and a 4. Three listens probably takes it into 4 territory, despite the utterly dreadful album cover that was presumably knocked up by the work experience child.
Well I spent the day with some of these stuck in my head.
Never a huge fan as a kid but now listening with a ton of extra years and knowledge this is a very good album with banger hits.
Fav: Its A Miracle Least Fav: Mister Man I’ll never doubt 80s albums again, cos that was so much better than I was anticipating. Nice vocals throughout with some excellent instrumentation. Pity about Boy George tho
Half of this album is perfect the slower songs are ok but lack the infectious qualities of the hits. Church of the poison Mind is fabulous.
Solid 80s album. Mister Man was fun, Karma Chameleon is catchy as hell of course. Enjoyable all around.
Listened in the car driving from Broadway to Woodbridge on Christmas Eve. I liked it a lot. Very distinct sound but I think it's fun. I would listen again later more closely.
Gudde Launä Album, bei dem man mitschwingt. Sehr zu empfehlen für Hausarbeit, ich vergebe 4 von 5 Staubsauger
feels like the soundtrack in a queer 80's film
Pretty good for a style of music that I'm not really into. Of course I knew a couple of songs from the album but I also liked the songs I didn't know.
Alright, not as cheesy as i thought
This is such a fun album but I feel like I wanted to like it better than I actually did. I love that Boy George was making conservative people uncomfortable so long before that was a real objective. It sucks that someone like Boy George can still make people upset. Good on him. Anyway, 3.5/5 and I guess I’ll round up because this album starts off with an all time banger.
Not the typical 80th soundtexture.
I already knew Karma Chameleon. The rest of the album was really soulful and very 80s. 4/5
Solid debut album. Lots of hits and good songs.
I discovered Karma Chameleon a few years ago when it played on the radio. I'm very curious about songs that immediately grab my attention, and I saved the name of this one and listened to it regularly over the last two years. But, criminally, I never stopped to listen to the whole album. It was worth the experience, it's really cool! 4 stars.
Really cool to see more from the band I only knew Karma Chameleon for, they've got some range even though it all feels like them.
Nostalgia you nerds! Two stars for that alone.
Great record. So fresh!
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would
Fun enough!
This album has a hugely popular single, but I forgot that there were several other good songs that were radio staples back in the 1980s. It was a worthy addition to the list.
Listened Before? N Great new wave album. Everyone knows Karma Chameleon but the deep cuts here are fantastic as well. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Karma Chameleon
I don't know why there's so much hate for this album but I liked it! Karma Chameleon was worth 10 stars, and there were a couple of songs in the latter half that made listening worth it. Tracks to Track: Karma Chameleon, Stormkeeper, Church Of The Poison Mind
A good album, I liked Karma Chameleon and Mister Man the most.
Fun, joyous, soulful. Came shockingly close to 5 stars for me. Karma Chameleon is undeniable, but so is the rest of the album. A real gem of an 80s album.
Love so much about this album. My era.
Good album - a bit of it’s time, but still some great hits
Want to capture the spirit of the 1980s? Listen to this album. It has ballads, soul, a bit of reggae and lots of pop. It's not one of those 1980s albums that holds up because we adore two perfect singles (looking at you, Frankie Goes to Hollywood), but which also work as an album. Why not 5 stars? In the end, I missed something that would bring them into the heights of these classics.
Det va gøy å høre på, sjøl om det ikke e helt min greie. Men ikke fælt på nokka vis.
A style of music I used to detest, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve actually grown to quite like (nostalgia I guess!)
Good album that's fun to listen to. Several bangers, moderate generational. Unique talent and sound. Very enjoyable.
Good
Good pop album
Throwback to my college days so enjoyed it for nostalgia sake. Never listened to the entire album so enjoyed the non hits as much as Church of the Poisoned Mind which was my fav of their hits.
Back in the 80s Culture Club was overplayed, so I didn't think I would like this album. I ended up liking it more than I expected.
I don't think I'd ever actually heard the whole album. I really enjoyed that
Fun 80s pop, definitely had my head bopping the whole way through!
Great 80’s throwback
Fun
Mostly I enjoyed the hit tracks on this album, and while several of the lesser known songs were pretty good, there were others, that I felt were pretty weak efforts. Also, I'm not sure about the rather bold backing vocals which didn't always seem to gel with the rest of the arrangements. But still a good album overall from my perspective.
🤏🏻👏🏻
4/5. I think I have the benefit of not being bombarded with these types of songs on the radio in my formative years. Boy George's voice is so calming and smooth added with the soft pop in the background is so perfect together, each on their own can be overbearing but there is just enough of that production to keep it feeling authentic. There wasn't really a feeling where I wanted to skip any songs and that is definitely a win for me. Best Song: Karma Chameleon, Church Of The Poison Mind, Black Money
yeah why not
I damn near wore out this vinyl when I was younger.
I enjoyed this album the further I got into it. I didn't think I enjoyed Karma Chameleon, but it's been stuck in my head the past few days.. 4/5
In a surprise to absolutely no one, I rate an 80's pop album highly. Not top of class, but really fun and listenable. 4 stars.
Stands the test of time really well. Karma Chameleon is of course a classic, but the other singles still sound great - It’s A Miracle, Church Of The Poison Mind, and the sublime Victims. There’s a slight lull in the middle of Side B, but otherwise this is banger after banger. 4.5 stars
I don't remember the last time I heard this out my kind of always put in the back of my mind it's a decent 3½★ album. But honestly listening to it this time, I personally think side one is downright excellent and going into" Church of the Poison Mind" this is looking like a solid 4★. Pretty much after that it just kind of lies there. "Miss Me Blind" is my least favorite of the singles though it's not bad. "Mister Man" I thought was just an awful song. "Victims" is a good closer but it didn't really bring anything more to the table better than what it did on the first side. Truly along with the singles, I really enjoyed "Black Money" and "That's the Way (I'm Only Trying to Help You)". I think they were magnificent songs. The latter actually has the most impassionate performance by Boy George on this album. I'm going to give it a high 3½ only because the second side really didn't live up to the first (7.9) ★★★½
80's Pop. Enjoyable listen. Not sure it would be required listening though.
Iconic 80s dancing
great album. enjoyed the whole thing. good music and lyrics that come after the music industry itself
I had heard bits and pieces through the years but hearing the entire album is a new thing. Wow. This is beautiful music.
A breath of very fresh air, and I'm sure these guys were perceived very interestingly by their peers and listeners.
so fun! i recognize the lead singer from somewhere and i just CANNOT tell. so many different genres fused together! i definitely recognized “karma chameleon” but some other songs also felt familiar. very vibey, very groovy. 4/5.
If all you know of Culture Club is Karma Chameleon, prepare to be surprised. Despite its upbeat subject matter, Boy George sounds oddly subdued on the title track and lead single. It’s mostly peak 80s with prominent synths, flanged fretless bass and gated snare. Stylistically it’s mostly mainstream blue eyed soul. What rescues it from being just that is the deep tracks. That’s The Way is a disturbing song lyrically but beautifully arranged, and greatly aided by Helen Terry’s astonishingly powerful voice. Black Money is another good track. Boy George is at his most interesting when he’s writing something other than love songs, though of course that’s what paid the bills. Victims is probably the standout example of his ability to write striking songs and is one of my favourite singles of the 80s. Fun jibe: the album cover is laugh out loud funny. Boy George looks like a sulky teenager who’s just been told they can’t go out ‘looking like that,’ and is about slam the door behind her. I presume he’s meant to look deep and thoughtful or maybe smouldering. If so, they missed by a country mile. Hilarious and impossible not to see once you’ve seen it.
I hated this when it first came out. It sounds to my young self like bland sugar pop. Recently I found it on vinyl for $2nand my opinion is changed. Boy George is an amazing singer and the entire album pings from one track to the next. Still not a fan of Karma chameleon though
p good
Little baby George Michael! I like this vibe
Sound of the 80’s. Good band, good music. Plus, had their own style. Was a nice change.
First listen, very good album.
01) Karma Chameleon - 10,0 02) It's a Miracle - 9,0 03) Black Money - 7,5 04) Changing Every Day - 7,0 05) That's the Way (I'm Only Trying to Help You) - 6,5 06) Church of the Poison Mind - 8,5 07) Miss Me Blind - 7,5 08) Mister Man - 7,0 09) Stormkeeper - 7,0 10) Victims - 7,0 TOTAL: 7,70 (77/100) Current ranking: 210/506
3.5 stars rounded up. "Karma Chameleon" is the standout track. The rest is fun soft rock.
Pretty typical vibe for the era. Liked the rest of it more than Karma Chameleon though, weirdly. A bit fun and happy sounding.
One of the best albums of the New Wave era. Blends blue-eyed soul with dance beats. Never really paid attention to the background vocals but the female singer is great. This band probably deserves more recognition. The album tails off a little by the end but still a very strong effort.
This album was much more Motown and Prince influnced than I expected, and that made it a really fun listen. “Karma Chameleon” and “Black Money” were both super catchy and “Miss Me Blind” was absolute banger. George Michael must have been a big fan of this album.
I grew up with pop like that. I thought it was the style of the time. If I heard that too, then it was a sin of my youth. When I listened to it again, I was surprised. I knew many of the tracks on the album and didn't just like them for nostalgic reasons. I certainly won't listen to Culure Club more often, but it was interesting again. 4/5
Don't think I ever listened to them beyond Karma Chameleon and DYRWTHM. Very decent album, reminds me of George Michael.
Favoriten: Karma Chameleon Its A Miracle Colour By Numbers
Maybe not the best album out of the 1001 but still thoroughly enjoyed the throwback to 80s.
I have heard about Culture Club but don't have any of their albums. So this is new-to-me and I like it.
Not taste in Music but big cultural impact.
Classic 80s. I would give it a 3.5 if I was able to.
This is a very fun record. I enjoyed all the songs, especially Karma Chameleon, That's The Way, Church Of The Poison Mind, and Miss Me Blind.
Strong vocals, songwriting, upbeat. pop culture.
A pleasant surprise. Boy George has a more soulful voice than I had anticipated, and the range of material kept me interested. Sure, this does feel lightweight, but perhaps that's down to the frictionless, airtight production. It's needed, as George's voice would otherwise run the risk of getting lost in the mix. 'Karma Chameleon' is the biggie and it's easy to understand why - it's bouncy and features an irresistible chorus hook. There are gems elsewhere though - side two especially, with the trifecta of the strutting 'Miss Me Blind', 'Mister Man' and 'Stormkeeper'. A bit of a treat, this.
Not the best album ever recorded, fun, counter culture (no pun intended) and enjoyable back day and still is.
Okay, this is fun! I’m giggling at how low its global score is. I feel like this website tends to favor the moody/artsy albums. But this is fun. Even the album art tells you to strap in for some 80s shenanigans. Love it.
Black album by a white band, timeless music.
A classic British pop album from the 80s. Some songs are deeply touching and emotional, while others were major hits of their time. There are also some great karaoke tracks :) Boy George’s vocals are wonderfully melodic
Enjoyable and I love Miss You Blind!
Ground breaking at the time
Genuinely a fun to listen to album although the instrumental style of the 80s isn’t my favorite, but I like Karma Chameleon and the rest of the album was pretty good if not a little repetitive.
Boy George at his best. Not extraordenary special.
• 4/5 • Liked the album better than I had expected - not a masterpiece but thoroughly enjoyable • Strength not limited to the singles • Clear gospel, R&B, Ska, and Caribbean influences make for a fun a creative mishmash • Production was rougher than I recalled
was not expecting this to be as good as it was, really fun and surprisingly not too heavily dependant on Karma Chameleon. 7.5/10
“Karma Chameleon” is one of the great pop songs of the 1980s, which makes it one of the great pop songs ever. That song anchors a collection of enjoyable albeit light char-friendly New Wave music with a touch of blue-eyed soul from Boy George. https://open.substack.com/pub/richcain/p/project-1001-colour-by-numbers-by?r=4ztyq&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false
Absolutely first-rate vocals (both lead and backing) are the strength of this record. Odd to think how well this stands up given Boy George's focus on style over substance; if kids didn't know how controversial his look was, will they just think he's got an all-time voice that could flit between pure pop, white soul and gospel-inflected R&B. Playing is polished here and production is first rate. One always thinks these songs will seem trifles, and then finds them surprisingly substantive, if still fun, bouncy and danceable. One can make a case that Kissing To Be Clever is the better of the record (if only because it includes "Time (Clock of the Heart)" which isn't – hey editors – just a "slow dance tune for teens" but an absolute contender for GOAT love song), but still, glad some CC made the cut here.
perfectly enjoyable kitsch imo! unfortunately idk if it quite beats the allegations of One Song Where The Songcraft Comes Together Notably More Than The Others but of all the songs in that category karma chameleon is probably one of the best and will not be denied by me. almost everything else is pretty glompy and structurally inert unfortunately but i still had a good time cuz its hard to beat this hyper-colorful new romantic sound palate...if the songs were more memorable, they would be very easy to tell apart with the genuine variety tied together mostly by admirable garishness. and no matter what he's singing boy george is a nice presence!
Some pretty damn good 80s british pop, but not much else to say besides that. 4.5 bumped down to 4.
My grandpa is very homophobic and I disagree with him on many fundamental values, however he's the person I inherited my music taste from and I feel indebted to him despite our disagreements. One of my fondest memories with him was listening to 80s hits CDs in his car, and when Culture Club came on he *always* made it a point to condemn Boy George's homosexuality while painting him as a hell of a singer. And while I ended up very gay (ultimately a disappointment to my grandfather), we can agree on one thing: Boy George is a hell of a singer. To be clear, he isn't Pete Burns level cool and as far as white sophisti-guys Mick Hucknall outclasses him heavily, but I've always had a soft spot for him and his chameleon-chasing antics. "Karma..." has grown a bit off me over the years but it's still an iconic piece of 80s pop. "Miss Me Blind" I heard first on Watch Dogs 2 and it instantly became my favorite song from the band; about a year later and that hasn't changed! It has a great soulful bounce to it that rivals anything Spandau Ballet or Scritti Politti were putting out years later. While this album isn't all zingers, it doesn't overstay its welcome and doesn't try to be anything more than a product of the times. That makes the songs quintessential of the New Romantic era; its datedness is its biggest strength. 8/10
Karma Chameleon is a song that totally fucks. The consistency of the latter new wave bops makes for a really enjoyable effort. Really timely album to get on the Eurostar to jolly old Londontown. The album never goes from good to great for me though, so a 4 it is.
I actually really like this more stripped back approach to new wave, it's quite an original sound and I've never heard anything quite like it. Definitely one I can see myself getting into even more in the future.
I was surprised on how good the album was....
Favourite song - it's a miracle 4.5 stars
Nice background music. Boy George in his heyday.
The Good: Who doesn’t like it when it is evident which color to apply? The Bad: However, what if I don’t agree with the indicated color? The Ugly: That the British keep pestering us with the word Colour… Loved it! Brought me back to my youth, and also made me realize that, though a massive Pop band, they knew how to play their instruments, and Boy George has some more than impressive pipes on him. It would be 5, but it isn’t perfect...
A nice selection of soft songs, with some higher energy songs, however a few songs are repetitive. Standout Tracks: Karma Chameleon, It's a Miracle, Church of the Poison Mind
3.5, but I'll round up to 4 cause there are some real gems on this one
Fun album!
One of my favorite things about the 80’s, Boy George just iconic.
Pretty much as I remembered. Classic 80's.
I’ve never listened to this album, I only know “Karma Chameleon” from its heavy radio and Mtv rotation. Boy George has a smooth voice and he writes some really catchy songs. The music is fun and mostly upbeat with the exception of some soulful ballads. I’m really impressed with the band too, all components are firing at 100%. I found Roy Hayes’ intricate guitar and piano work really impressive and performed really well. The rhythm section of Mike Craig and Jon Moss is really tight with a lot of interesting change ups. Mike Craig’s bass playing is a stand out for me, with some really impressive bass lines through out. I think “Miss Me Blind” might be my favorite for my first listen but really every song kept me captivated. Overall a great 80’s classic that makes me want to listen to more their albums as well as revisit this one more in the future.
Boy George's voice is so limber and clear, effortless in its delivery. That works for Culture Club, who keep the soundscape pure without distortion. The bounce of "Karma Chameleon" has almost a reggae feel; I hadn't noticed that before, and I hear it on some other tunes here too. Great tune. I liked this one since it first came out. I forgot about "It's a Miracle." Still jams. The next three songs show us Culture Club can handle R&B and samba just fine; indeed, "Black Money" could be at home on Bobby Brown's "Don't Be Cruel" album. We get back to dance pop with "Church Of The Poison Mind." I didn't realize "Miss Me Blind" was Culture Club. This album keeps surprising me! With a sweeping epic R&B ballad closing the album ("Victims"), Colour By Numbers vacillates between slow introspective R&B and upbeat, poppy dance club tunes about relationships. This album has more depth than I gleaned from the cover. Three slow jams back-to-back was a bit of a drag, although the individual songs were good. This may benefit from a different song sequence, or replacing a slow jam with a more upbeat one, but in all, Culture Club execute on both the jams and ballads.
Loved it
Surprisingly solid. I rolled my eyes when I saw it come up, but I give George and the others credit. Lots of good orchestration. I enjoyed this more than I expected.
Only knew the first absolutely huge hit on this album but there were a couple bangers throughout. I enjoyed the more upbeat songs to the slower paced ones. 7/10
This is just mostly happy and weirdly jazzy cluby. It is just very different, but in a good unique way that seems to exude Boy George.
This is the first album in a minute that made me want to get up and dance. And though I hadn’t heard it before, I *loved* Church of the Poison Mind. I think I’ll work a few of these songs into my regular rotation.
Excellent
Some hate for this in other reviews, don't know why just fun happy music. What can you hate about that. Easy 4. Added this and other Culture Club albums to favorites for future fun happy enjoyable listening.
all songs were decent, black money i found was really annoying, i found some songs i haven’t heard since i was a child which was nice, good album overall
Ok it’s 80’s pop. Until you remember that it’s “80’s” pop. And this is a band making pretty good pop music by a band led by a… clearly non-hetero/maybe bi/maybe gay definitely non of our business/ singer with a very good voice. In the 80’s this was pretty ground breaking in the MTV age.
This is a weird one to review because I feel like my opinion of it has changed each time I listened to it. The first listen, I thought it was crap. Hated the obvious 80's production to it. The second listen it grew on me, and some tracks started to stand out. The third listen, I... actually liked it? I think I did anyway. It's just bizarre to me that I can go from hating it to somewhat liking it so quickly. The obvious highlight is the hit 'Karma Chameleon' which boasts an unbelievably catchy melody and hook in the chorus. I've known, and enjoyed that song for years, but the surprising best song for me on the album is 'That's The Way'. A beautifully sung ballad with piano accompaniment, the way the backing vocals slot in with the harmonies is the great part of this track. Coupled with a powerful lead sung by Boy George, this song really genuinely surprised me. The coda with the two vocalists trading lines perfects the song. I was worried when this album came up because I assumed it would be shit. And at first I thought it was shit. But now I think its less shit. In fact, maybe its not shit at all? I'll probably have to listen to it another 10 times to make sure. FAVORITE SONGS - Karma Chameleon - That's The Way As I said, tough to rate, but lets go 3.5/5 for now
Vibey - saved quite a few songs. Didn’t know Karma Chameleon was by them
Such a good album!
All songs have the Culture Club vibe. Great if you are into that. Best track is Karma Chameleon.
I didn’t think much of Culture Club in 1983. Coming on the heels of the 70s it seemed really light weight. After doing over 100 albums on this list and realizing how talentless the 21st century can be I have a new found appreciation for this music. It’s well done, it’s upbeat, it’s intelligible and just good mood music.
Boy George is a much better singer than I remember, very soulful . Great new wave album, still holds up
When Boy George first appeared on Top of the Pops back in the early 80s there was a brief wave of moral panic about ‘gender bending’ pop stars from the right wing press, recycling the same headlines they’d printed about Bowie and Bolan from 10 years previously. However, he soon silenced the critics with a series of top ten hits and a second album that was full of bright, soulful pop with backing vocals from Helen Terry giving a Motown vibe. Lovely stuff.
While I personally wouldn’t listen to this on my own, it’s a pretty solid record. No filler. I almost went with 3 stars, but it really had to be a 4.
Really solid album. Didn’t realize how many songs I knew
I didn't like this at all when it came out. You couldn't escape it. This was the 1st time I listened to this album. Pretty solid, lots of hits.
The definition of lead single
fun. I like it
Liked this better than I remembered it and expected to. 2 big hits, 2 minor hits and other side one tracks were quite nice. Fun to sing to and move to. A solid debut effort.
80ssssssss ✨✨✨✨
nice 80s vibe
There is a category of song so deeply worn into your brain that you can sing along while doing something else. Catchy, bouncy, and fun. Did I mention catchy? Extra star for Boy George being Boy George in 1983.
Miss me blind is a bop
I enjoyed this album. It was a very upbeat and peppy kind of feel.
The variation! I love the beats, the vocals and harmonies. Absolutely loved this album from a band I've never heard of.
Great
its giving zumba
Culture Club was very popular when I started getting into music, so I have nostalgia for some of these songs. Karma Chameleon, It's a Miracle, Church of the Poison Mind, and Miss Me Blind were all hits I believe. The rest of the album is solid. I only listened to the original 10 tracks, but I'll probably hit the rest later.
good easy listening
A fun album with good vibes
I've heard of this group. I only knew one of the songs. Music was okay - not offensive. I liked the last song, Romance Reinvented, an instrumental.
Cheese ball but fun I love jt
Clearly a monster record when it was released. Poppy enough to be fun and raise your mood. But also interesting enough to make you stop once in a while and notice what’s happening. Boy George had a little bit of a gospel vibe going on sometimes. I never really noticed this before!
Yes
Probs like a 3.9
Great listen. I had no idea who Culture Club was until I heard the first sind of the album. Karma Chameleon is such a banger and so is the whole album.
I didn't realise how well I knew this album until I listened to it again today. It's a pretty good all round pop album. Of its time, obviously, but I don't think I can knock it on that basis. It's a good set of songs.
Definitely a fun throwback to the 80s. I had never listened to the album (as my memory tells me). It was pretty good.
Backing vocalist Helen Terry is the highlight of this album for me. I give her 5 stars. The rest of the album is quite good. I wasn’t much of a fan back in the day, but listening now I appreciate this Club’s unique style and charisma. I find Boy George’s voice off-putting somehow. At some point, I might’ve blamed the androgyny of that but now it occurs to me that he might not always be singing on pitch.
All around great vibes
Iconic group. Iconic album.
Fun trip down memory lane with more hits that I remember.
This record was an absolute monster at the time and Boy George was everywhere. Very much a product of early MTV, the look was just as important as the sound. Great vocals, very soulful, and while some of the tunes are a little cheesy, the big hits are solid.
I was in junior high when this album first came out. My brother had a copy of the album but didn't listen to it all the way through until today. Some of the tracks ring a bell but were unremarkable. I was far more interested other New Romantic bands like Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran. The 4 hits off the album are definitely the best songs on the album, but only Victims is a standout among the others. Overall the original album feels uneven, but the 2003 bonus tracks all are better than the "filler" that makes up the rest of the original album. Those bonus tracks earn it 4 stars.
Classic 80s pop
Purest essence of pop. Boy George is an odd candidate for icon, it's not as if he's that strong of a singer, but it all works. A fair bit of filler in this though.
This is extremely 80s but I kinda dig it. Karma Chameleon is very mall-core to me but in a nostalgic way. 7/10
Never heard this full album, only Karma Chameleon. Pretty good 80s sound.
It was oh so shocking! Gender fluid! Not that we called it that then. Or at least the circles in which I found myself didn’t. And Boy George certainly garnered a lot of attention. And controversy. What people tended to forget was just how damned bloody good this band is. The slightly reggae approach, not quite ska, closer to the police than the specials, really was tight. Superb playing. And the songs. Sure, karma chameleon. But I preferred it’s a miracle as a single. But neither are anything less than great. George’s voice is really underrated. That reedy tenor but with a bit of heft sounded different to everyone else. At the time, most British singers had brassier baritones - think George Michael or the guy from Spandau ballet, or the guy from the Thompson Twins. Or Howard Jones. All great voices. Paul young another exception. But George coquettishly coos and sighs and holds the melody exactly where it belongs. George Michael was a master of that as well. I don’t care what you think. 5/5. At least.
3.5
Brilliant early 80s pop, great vocals. Slightly boring tail-end, but magnificent dance pop in the first half. More pop than New Romantic, ska or wine bar.
Fun
Very creative. Fun to listen to .
Favourite tracks: karma chameleon; black money; church of the poison mind; miss me blind
4.0
"Karma Chameleon" was a staple of my childhood thanks to my father, so I have a lot of nostalgia for that. The album as a whole is pretty good as well. favs: It's A Miracle, Karma Chameleon, Church of the Poison Mind, Miss Me Blind least fav: Victims
Pop music was king in the 80s. This was one of the cream of the crop, a New Romantic masterpiece. Unavoidable in it’s time. While definitely of it’s time, its themes (at times heavy despite the infectious sound of it all.) A rare band that not only seemed driven by the front man, but allowed the back up singers and instrumentalists shine. Really love the slick Motown update of Church of the Poison Mind.
Les années 80 regorgent de gros débiles et ceux-là m'ont bien régalé je dois dire.
Smooth, sophisticated, stylish and surprisingly substantive. Has held up really well, in other words. It's easy to see how CC was always going to be easy to misread and underestimate, given Boy George's controversial (and oxygen-hogging) celebrity. But what a voice he had. It's interesting that none of their tip-top tracks ("Time," [note to editors: this not a "slow dance tune for teens" but rather one of the best pure pop songs of the last several decades – timelessly lovely, rich and bittersweet] "Do You Really" and "Mistake #3") are on this record, which works in their absence, primarily thanks to having such an upbeat tempo and a smile on its face. A more-than-moderate delight to come back across this so many years hence.
Its funny not recognising the song or band, but the first riff of the first song is so iconic. Rest of the album is diverse, all great in their own way especially for '83 - 4/5
Having recently found out Boy George was the frontman of Culture Club it seemed quite a coincidence that this album would pop up but I was intrigued nonetheless. Going into this I wasn’t sure what type of style this album was all I know was the opening track ‘Karma Chameleon’ which is quite a nice pop sounding track with an incredibly catchy chorus. However I gotta say this album had me hooked, the energy on here was nothing less than vibrant and focused. The record length is a bit long so I was worried for this type of sound what it would sound like towards the end and it does drop a little bit but for the most part it holds it’s own. One of my favourites is ‘Miss Me Blind’ which is an incredibly funky track that I can’t help but bop along to. I got the same feeling from ‘Mystery Boy’ which gave some dance electronic vibes that was just as groovy. I was surprised the amount of social commentary on this album, I really did just expect some fun pop/disco sounding tracks but tracks such as ‘Melting Pot’ talking about how great of all races could live together and get along was not something I was expecting from this band but I gladly accept it as it adds a good amount of depth. Overall I do have to say I quite enjoyed this album, it almost feels like a bit of a guilty pleasure album I must say as it’s not the type of music I’m usually into but nevertheless a good handful of songs on here hit well for me.
Better than I expected. Worth a listen.
I’ve been quite excited to listen to today’s album. Karma Chameleon was on rotation for a very long time when I used to curate my own playlists as a teen. The only other Culture Club song I know isn’t on this album (Do You Really Want To Hurt Me?). I’m excited to hear an album by them in full. Songs I already knew: Karma Chameleon Favourites: Karma Chameleon, Church Of The Poison Mind, Miss Me Blind What is there to dislike about an album where the themes throughout centre on equality, and everybody being a valuable person regardless of what colour they tend to be? There are plenty of songs that had me dancing, and plenty of slower songs that were frankly lovely - both in the themes and the instrumentation. It’s nice to have an album that just makes me feel positive and happy. And obviously, Boy George was way ahead of the time with expressing his androgyny and not conforming to gender norms, and you’ve got to love that.
Really great album. It was a classic from the day it was released. 4.5
Something I know and like
more than a single, fun!
Put this on and immediately felt happier
Pas terminé, mais bien!
Much deeper and more interesting than I expected, pretty great version of that 80s sound.
Newsflash: music that came out a long time ago that was popular at that time is always going to sound dated, it's a dumb criticism. The hits from this album belong on any list of the best singles of the 1980s. The Church of the Poison Mind rocks and I defy you to find a catchier earworm than Karma Chameleon. There's some filler but a couple of the deep tracks, Victims and That's The Way - I'm Only Trying To Help really showcase Boy George's incredible voice.
This is great album. I've never listened to it end to end but surprisingly recognized a number of the songs. This is a fun band to listen to and Boy George has very distinctive voice. I'd more likely purchase a "best of..." album by the Culture Club than individual albums but I enjoyed listening to this one. It didn't knock it out the park to get a five from me but this is a strong four star album.
I wish the river boat from the Karma Chameleon video was real. The album is more R&B/soul than I realized at the time. Real piano, instead of just synthesizers. Also appreciated the horns and backing vocals.
Confessions of an MTV junkie: I remember when MTV launched with "Video Killed the Radio Star." I was hooked. Every single day after school MTV was a big part of my routine. I wasn't a huge Culture Club fan when Colour By Numbers came out but the repeated play on MTV combined with my fascination with Boy George got these ear worms deeply embedded in my mind. As I matured and realized it's OK to love pop, I listened to a lot more Culture Club. What a joy to listen start to finish because I forgot that so many of the hits came from this album. I'm a big Sam Smith fan and watched him perform at the White House celebration of same-sex marriage law yesterday and it hit what a huge cultural influence Boy George has been to gender non-conforming/trans/queer people in the music industry. Duh! Department of obvious.
I honestly really enjoyed this album. Some of the songs sounded like they could be the soundtrack to Titanic, some reminded me of popular WHAM songs, and some were just bopping. I like Karma Chameleon, Manshake, Melting Pot
I was surprised to discover I like this album! I’ve listened to a little bit of Culture Club before, but never a full album. And I am surprised to discover this is a pop album I like! Of course Boy George does incredible with the vocals, but I really liked the composition also. And the melding of soul, pop, and gospel music into one album is amazing!
An album that only could’ve come into existence in the early 80s. Everything about how the band decided to present themselves is so peculiar. From Boy Georges look to the album art to the utterly perplexing music videos it just gets weirder and weirder. That being said, pretty good album. High points are Black Money, Church of the Poison Mind, and of course the ever-popular Karma Chameleon.
me ENCANTÓ fue divertidísimo aaa. 8.5/10
80s
When this album came out I totally dismissed it as bubblegum pop and never listened to it. Forty years later, I sincerely thank this 1001 album generator for making sure I had it on my list. This album is really good!
A lot better than I remember it back when it was released. Back then I was into heavier music and this was worse than bubblegum pop, it was the pits, however with my maturity and time it seems now that I can listen to it and appreciate it a little more. It’s still not something I would have as a saved album on my Spotify though but worth of more than 3 stars
Some classic pop, but especially the last track is also a bit more serious. All in all, very nice.
More than just Karma Chameleon, this is a really nice soulful pop record. No weak tracks and Boy George's voice is lush. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Karma Chameleon Date listened: 15/09/22
Blue-eyed soul done right early 80s style. Boy George is a great songwriter and his production value in this (especially with powerhouse supporting vocals by Helen Terry) augment the album fully..
Surprised me. Expected a nothing album but the music and lyrical content along with the delivery nailed it.
This brings back some great memories. The album and its songs were popular at a time when I thought myself a macho teenage guy, into hard rock, too cool for pop, and really stupidly ignorant about sexuality and gender. Despite my own self-manufactured idiocy, I loved these songs then and love them now, and found myself truly enjoying Boy George's bravery and entertaining fun. Looking back, of course, I wish I had been stronger about standing up for those amongst me who are "different" from what I had been conditioned to support. What's done is done and I can only move forward, as I have been for decades, and I must continue to learn and grow to recognize and push through any remaining prejudices, biases, and societal expectations. Back to the music. I had forgotten that this was an early 80s album, not later in the decade as my memory had categorized it, which makes it even more remarkable to me because I think there's a good argument that Culture Club, especially Boy George, really paved the way for many to follow. These are well-written, well-performed, and genuinely engaging songs. Boy's voice is outstanding. I remember especially loving "That's The Way" with his voice and Helen Terry's just soaring. I used to listen to that one in my headphones over and over. Love him and love his work.
Mér þykir mjög vænt um Culture Club og þessi plata er mjög góð. Nokkrar perlur á henni. Mæli með.
Classic. Favorite song: Victims. 4.5/5
Hmm. This may be an interesting experience. Karma Chameleon is a time-honoured classic, but while the rest of the album is good, I can't ever imagine a situation where I'd play it again.
This album is a great mix of New Wave and pop. I was truly expecting to dislike this album but it was catchy enough to keep my attention. The music is firmly within the pop traditions and oscillates between how much new wave is thrown in. There are moments that are pure power pop and moments where the post punk/new wave influence is apparent. Some of the arrangements on this album predict the rise of boy/girl bands in the 90s and really contextualized for me where that music came from.
Ok, I enjoyed this top to bottom. Despite the obvious flaws like thin voice, dated production and cheesyness, it makes up for a lot with lots of hooks, earnest effort, compositional creativity, and some je ne sais quoi I can only call charisma. Sam Smith is awesome, but I hope it’s safe to say it helps to have blue-eyed soul like this to stand on and move ever forward.
When Karma Chameleon hit the eardrums, I suspected that the rest of the album will hit the same lane: poppy, accessible, carefree. And it is that, but it can also reach areas that you wouldn't expect Culture Club to talk about. Maybe I'm dumb, maybe I'm ill informed about this band, maybe I should do more research. But this album is great. Culture Club can be more than expected. Favorites: Karma Chameleon, Black Money, Changing Every Day, That's the Way - I'm Only Trying to Help You, Church of the Poison Mind, Miss Me Blind, Stormkeeper, Victims, Colour by Numbers, Romance Revisited.
Karma Chameleon 10/10
Saved Prior: Karma Chameleon, Church Of The Poison Mind Off Rip: It's A Miracle, Miss Me Blind, Mister Man, Stormkeeper Cutting Edge: Black Money Overall Notes: Pretty, inoffensive 80's pop. Boy George has a really nice voice, but I also really like the instrumental backing on this. Nothing to rock you to your core, but if you're looking for pop you could do much much worse than this. 3.75 that I'll round up.
Gran disco de pop. Conocía el hit del disco pero me sorprendió mucho todas las otras canciones.
I wasn't ready for this one. Like most people, I associated Culture Club with the iconic persona of Boy George, a couple of sweet MTV videos, and generally appreciated them for a couple of light, poppy hits. But listening to this album in full and on repeat, I'm realizing there was so much more under the surface here. The 80s sound is known for a lot of kitschy reverb snare and overly produced synth, but in the midst of that, we had bands like The Jam, Style Council and Culture Club that just took pop seriously enough to treat it right. This LP is packed with quality cuts and covers an incredible range of styles: disco, jazz, soul, reggae, bossanova...each one executed with skill and love. Very colorful and I'm happy to be surprised by this one.
Whole album was pretty good! Karma chameleon is great.
80s in a box.
My boyfriend had a Twitter fight with boy George anyway this album is pretty good
Poppy 80s Rock at its best
Very nice pop, lovly voice
ну местами норм попчик, и это я не про хитяру Карма хамелеон. В общем то слушатебельно и аранжировки ничо
This album is better than the total listens given on Spotify. "Its A Miracle" is the best song on the album, IMHO. "Miss Me Blind" is also great. 7/10.
Classic POP. Excellent. 4/5. Standouts: Victims. That's the Way. Karma Chameleon. Church of the Poison Mind, Miss Me Blind. It's A Miracle...
Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Karma chameleon, Miss me blind
Colour by Numbers is the second album by the British new wave group Culture Club, released in October 1983. Preceded by the hit single "Karma Chameleon", which reached number one in several countries, the album reached number one in the UK and has sold 10 million copies worldwide
Erg leuk album. Zeker voor die tijd. Karma Chameleon doet het nog altijd goed op elk feestje. Tevens een extra ster voor Boy George. Wat een stijlicoon! Love it!
Good and varied pop album.
George's masterpiece
surprisngly good, didn't realize the karma chameleon song was on this album

Mister Man!
Quirky.
Pretty good should probs listen again haha
Quite pop-ish, not my usual choice, but better now than when it first came out, improved with age.
3/5
Meh
This is fine. Its just that kind of British new wave stuff that never really lands for me. I liked how they attempted at fuzing genres in the beginning, but then it just felt like George Michael.
3 out of 5. It was a fun listen.
A good pop album, with THAT track that 99.9% of humanity will recognise. (OK, hat's hyperbole), but alas, Familiarity Breeds Contempt, and I couldn't wait for Karma to finish. The rest of the album is fine, with only Church standing out.
This album was right in the middle, not too unpleasant to want to skip but not fun enough to really pay attention to. I liked a few songs in the middle but did look forward to it ending.
the cover promised me a better experience
Not as “80’s-y” pop garbage as I was expecting. Not bad.
3.3
Never really liked Karma Chameleon but the sheer exposure makes you “like” it.. quite the achievement. Boy George has a somewhat George Michael voice to him… Otherwise the music is pretty meh
This was catchy, very 80s, but not in a bad way like some albums I've had are. Overall not something I'd probably go out of my way to listen to but not something I'd turn down if someone else wanted to play it.
The essentials of Kindergarten.
I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected to. The singles especially are a lot of fun. Warmer and more human production than a lot of early eighties stuff.
Blast from the past!
These songs make me feel good. It's uncomplicated and enjoyable for what it is, much like my life in the 80s. My music doesn't always have to have deeper meaning or groundbreaking musicality. Sometimes I can just appreciate songs that take me back to childhood without picking them apart. Now, I get that's the whole point of a "review", to analyze and pick, but I am one to let my feelings and nostalgia seep into every aspect of life, so I'm just gonna let the "music critics" here handle the analysis while I bask in the glory of the 80s. "Miss Me Blind" is probably my favorite song here, but damn I remember the video on MTV for "Karma Chameleon" and it holds a special place in my heart. Also, Boy George is a really good singer!
Yeah I think I’ll take the 38 minute one thanks What I will say is that it’s always interesting to hear something like Karma Chameleon that I’ve heard a thousand times out and about, but never on a good pair of headphones, there’s falsetto backing vocals for days. Rest of this album is very much an obligation to that single, but decently catchy nonetheless
Facts are facts, Karma Chameleon is a great song. You get by that and you still get a couple of hits, but the sum of the parts is largely ho hum. Fun 80s vibes but pretty much a fine album
I love you 80s synths !!!!! Finally, a fun listen after a drought. Favorite tracks: Miss Me Blind, Mister Man, Romance Revisited
Boring. Why.
Was never a fan, but I’ll give props here for the multiple hits on this album. This stuff was played incessantly on MTV and the airwaves, and I distinctly remember having to wait and wait and wait through these ridiculous videos in the hopes that something like Twisted Sister would come on.
Not my bag but I'm fine with it. I watched the scene with the Boy George impersonator in The Wedding Singer and that made me laugh. 2.75/5
