Reviews (page 13 of 14)
Never have gotten this - just not my thing I guess. Actually liked the unfamiliar stuff a good deal more than the relatively well known ones.
Did not enjoy after the first song. Maybe it's not my type of music but way too experimental or "progressive" pop.
No pude terminarlo
Running up that hills has a cool sound to it (other than being played out from ST), but the lyrics make very little sense. There's a couple other cool sounding songs, but most of the album is boring and filled with cheesey 80s keyboard sound effects
Weird weird album. There are some very good songs (songs I can say are good, however I don't personally like them) then the second half of the album is so random like what. Uh because of that pretty mid. Idk maybe it has meaning and that makes it good what do I know.
Dreadful
Maybe I need to listen to more pop, but to me it sounds like Vespertine by Bjork but without the gorgeous production. Or in other words, strange vocals with very 80’s like instrumentation and synths. Not my thing, but still respectable. Running Up That Hill brings me back to summer 2022 and I liked the bass tone on Big Sky. Favorite Songs: Running up that hill, The Morning Fog.
While Kate Bush is a super talented vocalist, this really bored me at times. It wasn't terrible, it just felt like background music. I instantly recognized "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" Liked Songs: "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" , "Hounds Of Love" , "Jig Of Life" , "The Morning Fog"
stranger things?? per annie. if running up that hill wasn't in this album, it'd be a 1. frankly. 2.5
I know this got a huge push for Running Up That Hill because of Stranger Things that song never really did much for me. It is catchy and the chorus gets stuck in my head but I don't love it. There was another song (Hello Earth maybe?) that sounded very very similar to Running Up That Hill. Nothing else really stood out to me.
Not my taste.
To me, this really has a theatrical bend to it, it sounds like a cast recording of a Broadway musical. Not really my cup of tea.
I know this is heavily praised, but it’s too artsy fartsy and sophisticated for me.
Every Kate Bush album I've ever heard has had 1 to 3 songs I love, and then mostly a bunch of pretentious bullshit. This is at the low end of the former and the high end of the latter.
I know she is a really good artist but I couldn't like this even if I tried. I think it has to do with her voice, and it's not that it's bad but it's not for me
it feels very theatre kid - but kind of eerie / ghostly vocals - feels very otherwordly ngl. very lorde 'shhhhh' moment. i cannot keep listening to this it's just a bunch of hooting and hollering oh my god
Kate Bush should be thanking the Duffer brothers every day for the rest of her life for making her relevant. If they had not attached her opening track to the Stranger Things series, no one would know her name. I’m not totally bashing her. She can sing, but I went to high school with people who are more talented vocally and they don’t have a record deal. Just an average singer with below average songs in my opinion.
I should like this because I like most things Kate Bush adjacent - Tori Amos, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Patti Smyth, Christie Hynde, but I don’t like it. There is nothing about this that makes me want to come back to it. It’s not brilliant or beautiful… it’s weird and indulgent. It’s off and it’s off-putting. Incredibly overrated.
not for me
о боже це ж вюзерінг вюзерінг хайтс омага
Not my jam at all. Never cared for the stranger things song and the waking the witch song or whatever it’s called was god awful.
What started as a classic Lady Pop album quickly turned into an experimental progressiv Indi/Electronic/Folk album - was not what I was expecting but also not something that I enjoyed listening to.
demasiado aburrido y aparte todas las canciones son re parecidas, no me esta gustando, por ahí a la mitad hubo un cambio de flow q lastimosamente fue para mal, pero me gusta q esta como contando una historia
The tightly-constructed numbers like "The Big Sky" on this record are decent (if overlong), but the further Bush strays from conventional song structures (as she does on the entire second side), the less compelling the tracks are. In addition, the mix of acoustic and electronic instrumention on this album consistently feels...off. These missteps in the arrangements chip away at the effectiveness of the songs: for example, the nagging synth hook of "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" sounds out of sync with the drum track, which itself sounds muffled and flat at the same time. The use of sampling on this album is equally unsophisticated, like the clumsy faux-industrial percussion that contributes little to "Mother Stands For Comfort".
Her voice is beautiful, the performances compelling, the songwriting on point…but I just don’t like this album.
Not really for me, kind of slow
A few songs I’m familiar with, the rest are mundane and boring
Beautiful voice singing 80s avant garde songs that probably sounded cool when they came out but now sound corny. Sounds like she probably inspired Enya and Bjork, neither of whom I ever liked.
If this is your thing very awesome I thought it was ok. I liked when it got really scary in the middle then the white people from sinners started to show up
Another no thank you not my thing.
I’m not a huge Kate Bush fan, but you cant really fault Running up that Hill and Hounds of Love (albeit the Futureheads cover is far superior) for an opening. Unfortunately and somewhat unsurprising the quality and interest levels drops off after that. Overall it’s just a bit dull which is odd given it is a fairly eclectic collection. Under Ice and Waking the Witch mistake eccentricity for creativity.
ok, she did better ones
Love the idea of it, but it's not my thing
vager dan leuk is.
I’m sorry, Kate Bush, I tried to listen to this album in the 80s, then when Stranger Things came out, and just now. I think you’re incredibly talented, but I just don’t get it. It sounds like I’m listening to the soundtrack to a Disney movie.
Not my kind of music either.
Sometimes good but sometimes she not for me
Ihan menevää musiikkia, muutama kipale kolahtaa enemmän kuin muut. Albumi ei kokonaisuutena kuitenkaan säväytä 2 tähteä enempää.
Love 80’s music but this was not my thing
Who knew that while this was being made, the world was prepping for another Bush to come in and do some other stuff
shit
Classic 80s incredible female artist is such a ground breaker for women and songwriting definitely one of those like Taylor Swift’s of the 80s and not my sound generally.
At first, I thought it was good, pleasant music. But in the second half of the album, there was a lot of psychedelia, and the song Waking The Witch made me feel physically uncomfortable, so much so that I couldn't even listen to it to the end.
This album was surprisingly hard for me to get through. This style of art-pop-vocals are just really annoying to me. I actually had to stop listening during And Dream of Sheep because too much of this album sounded like someone butchering lullabies. In 1985, we had The Smiths, New Order, The Cure, and Tom Waits all releasing great albums, and the Cocteau Twins releasing Treasure a year before. With that backdrop, I'm genuinely perplexed why this is the album I'm listening to today. I apologize to the inevitable unanimity around 4/5 stars from the rest of the group - I know I'm the outlier here. Under Ice -> Jig Of Life saves this from being a 1 star.
Not a fan
..
Running up that hill is a banger but the rest was meh
sympa mais un peu ennuyant, je pense néanmoins que ça a du être novateur à l'époque. j'ai bien aimé "and dream of sheep", et moins apprécié "waking the witch".
Running up that hill and big sky are bops but the rest is garbage.
Very vibe driven; not musically driven. Kind of creepy/scary which I'm not the biggest fan of. The barking was a choice. "Watching You Watching Me" is a standout for me - the production sounds kind of Indian. "Jig of Life" feels Sinners coded. The second half of the album definitely feels a lot more special than the first. But I wouldn't listen again, a little too weird for my tastes. 2/5
Very Irish - pretty interesting, not my favorite. I liked Running Up That Hill the most of course.
There are depths in the lyrical content of this record, but without context, history, or research, you're not going to get all of the details. It seems like a kind of gestalt performance art and I can appreciate that. It's an album that needs more than a few listens to see the big picture. On the surface level most of the music is decent, but there are some strange things going on throughout that beg more attention. Weird and dramatic in a theatrical way.
First half really good, second half not so good
the beginning of the album was great, but the songs start getting progressively darker. i find it too agressive for me
A bit weird
nuh uh
Couple of good tracks, then it's running down that hill.
Not my jam, felt it was too boring.
Running up the hill (Stranger Things)
Eh liked maybe 2 songs no saves
The overproduction ruins a lot of what would otherwise be good pop songs. Strip the dialogue snippets and weird sounds pasted in and this would be a better album for me. Still, I see much of the appeal. She can sing like nobody’s business.
listenable, but this is a very first superficial listening opinion. However, it doesnt seem to be even comperable to 'The Dreaming'.
Experimental sound, very atmospheric, but with little variations so the songs become repetitive
RUNNING UP THAT HILL!!! but the album is very weird after it. I started questioning if I liked it around Mother Stands for Comfort. Its a little too out there for me. I felt like I was listening to a recording of pretentious art students doing an interpretive dance final.
Not really a fan. Only song that stands out is that song that played over and over again on Stranger Things.
Nope
1 - "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God). Good start. I was already familiar with this track from the Stranger Things craze a couple of years back. Love Kate's vocals on this track. You can feel the agony in her vocals as she pleads to God. That guitar rift around 3:40 is the creme de la creme! Okay, after listening to the rest of the album, I can see why everyone just knows that first song. The rest of the album gets too experimental for me. It comes across as a pitch for a surrealist musical.
2/5
Här finns en del ljusa stunder. Stranger things-hiten Running up the hill och Big sky är ju fina.
Album composed of, Running Up a Hill and all the other over layered repetitive songs.
A couple songs I recognize from many years ago. 2.5 stars
STRANGER THINGS ALBUM
Good at the beginning, becomes experimental (?) at the end, which I did not think was very good. How can you start with Running Up That Hill (great song) and end so poorly?
too 80s
Not my cup of tea.
I'm honestly not sure why this album seems so popular. Did not enjoy it for myself. Wasn't awful, but also nothing special
This one should have stayed tucked away in a fern bar in the 80s
Wispy, eery, musical
A bit weird and some of the songs drag on a lot. Running up that hill is by far the best and most iconic track. The synths and bass in mother stands fir comfort are really cool
I had high hopes for this one, but it definitely fell short of my expectations. It has a strong start with the opening track, Kate Bush's most popular song by a mile. Jig of Life was kind of cool too. But in the end, I think it lacks cohesion and found myself tuning out for a good number of songs. A bit of a bummer.
2nd straight Kate Bush album sigh though I will say this one is better! The ending is still obnoxious 2.5/5
couple really great songs - towards the end loses it a bit.
Nei takk.
I love Kate Bush's first album. That is all
On Youtube Music, Running Up That Hill has 724M listens, Hounds of Love has 9.5M, The Big Sky has 2M and Mother Stands for Comfort has 560K. That means that 99 percent of this albums listeners weren't able to make it to the end of song two. And over 99.9 percent of listeners weren't able to make it through track four. I imagine the vast majority of the 0.1 percent remaining were asleep. For those who would quibble with my methodology, remember we are post-truth now.
I just cannot with Kate Bush. I want to love it but I can’t.
Do I hate it? No. Do I like it? No.
2 absolute bagers to start the album, then it's pretty mid.
I know 'Running Up That Hill' is a great song but the rest if the album honestly put me to sleep.
Two Kate Bush albums in one week? Lucky me... Thanks a lot, Dimery. As I said before, this is the only Kate Bush album that should be anywhere near this list. It has the only song that a casual listener would have maybe heard before (and most of those people only know it because of "Stranger Things.") For everything else, please refer to my previous review.
It was ok. A bit wishy washy for my taste. A couple of songs grabbed my attention though.
I can appreciate the ideas and the genre-mixing that was in this record. I don't enjoy the New Wave genre very much, so this wasn't up my alley. Favourite Track(s): Cloudbusting Least Favourite Track(s): And Dream of Sheep
I've always had mixed feelings about Kate Bush's music. On the one hand, I like her very conscious artistic approach, which sometimes leads to quite unusual song structures. On the other hand, her voice is so high-pitched that it gets on my nerves after a while. And of course, despite the approach I described, it all has that new wave sound that, as I wrote earlier in this project, I've heard more than enough of. The cult factor and “Running Up That Hill” save the album “Hounds Of Love” a little, but for me, that's not enough for three stars today.
Outside the popular single it’s not a great album. Seems like it could be a movie similar to bat out of hell but no songs that I wanted to sing along too
I really wanted to like this… I didn’t
Tää oli vähän liian ”taiteellista” musiikkia mun korville, vaikka Kate Bush on tuttu ja hän on erinomainen laulaja. Eipä tästä kuuntelusta jäänyt muuta mieleen kuin ensimmäinen kappale ”Running Up The Hill”. Se oli myös ainoa ennestään tuttu.
Industrial romantic 80s pop. Hits you like a strong perfume emanating off a lady with gobs of bright red lipstick. Similar to the Joanna Newsom, I appreciate this on some level, but it’s not for me unfortunately
Meh. Maybe evocative of the 80s but not something I want to listen to much
Once again the Brit bias of this list shining through. This. Is. Not. Good. Almost broke my no skipping/listen to 100% of album record. Are all the 5 star reviews listening to the same album as me? I don’t get it. 2 stars since I didn’t hate every track (but almost).
Hieman kaipaisi puska trimmailua.
This isn't part of the 80's I wish to revisit. I recognize the value of some of this music, but in general, Kate Bush isn't for me.
Ridiculous ‘80s pop-opera.
not sure I get the hype on this one
couple of good songs offset by over indulging the artist
It’s a lot.
Spoko
Alright
I do see the vision. I see why people like Kate Bush, and she is a very talented composer and songwriter, but I just cannot stand her singing
Quirky, reminds me of Bjork. Songs have effect but writing is lack luster
Idk just felt like a lot of filler songs but maybe she just isn't my vibe (except for running up that hill, amazing song)
Ehh real 80s
Not my jam
bah
Does the author of this project get a commission every time he recommends a Kate Bush album?! Hopefully this is the last. Recommending 3 of her albums (so far) is ridiculous.
An OK album.
Previously rated: The Dreaming (2/5) The Sensual World (2/5) *************************** I was going to say sorry to Ms. Bush here, but it seems I already did that in the previous review, so I'll just say this may be the best of the three I've heard, but overall I didn't care for it. It starts off decent enough with some poppy mid-80s sounds. Then it gets weird, artsy, and experimental, which I generally don't care for in music.
Running up that hill is a banger. not sure i really enjoyed anything else unfortunately. 2/5
Standout track is probably Running Up that Hill
Not as bad as I thought but too much random noise and I don't enjoy her voice
😴💩
The bad side of the 80s. 4/10
# 548 : Hounds Of Love by Kate Bush Hounds of Love – More Like Hounds of Mild Interest Kate Bush has a lovely voice and a wild imagination, but Hounds of Love feels like being gently chased by a very polite dog. It’s weird, slow, and light—like avant-garde lullabies for people who enjoy staring at clouds. There’s variety, sure, but it’s the kind that makes you wonder if your playlist shuffled into a dream sequence. “Running Up That Hill” and “Cloudbusting” are technically strong, but they both sound like they’re stuck in the same mystical fog. Only the first track really stands out—and even that one feels like it’s jogging uphill in slow motion. Verdict: A struggle to stay engaged. If this is essential listening, maybe we don’t need 1,001 albums before we die. If you have to listen to this, watch out for : Running Up That Hill Listened: 18/08/2025
I knew Running Up That Hill because of Stranger Things, and I think that’s the only song I really enjoy on this album because I’m familiar with it.
Pretty average for the time, I know it's a hot take but I find this album to be mid and a bit overly wordy at times. I would say I wouldn't turn it off but I also wouldn't pick it out. Running Up That Hill is and always was a bit grating, especially after Stranger Things and kids found out about it.
It’s okay but not really for me.
I really like Running Up That Hill so I'm sad to say every other track blows 😔 though I could see Jig of Life growing on me. Two stars because I believe in women's wrongs.
First song really good but then, uffff.
Things were going well until waking the witch and watching you.
Couple good songs, not much else
Not my bag
i lowkey don’t really like kate bush… sorry not sorry! “running up that hill” isn’t bad but it is definitely overplayed. the first half of the album was mid at best and bad at worst. however, the second half got marginally better. “jig of life” is an irish masterpiece. the next track, “hello earth” was REALLY cool. so haunting. i liked the choral aspect. i thought this album would end on a good note. alas, the last song let me down. the two good songs on this album were not good enough to save this from a 2/5.
Way too overproduced. I like some of her songs but, I could not connect to this album. Maybe if the album had a little less orchestration, it would have been better.
Her arrangements are ambitious, but I'm still yet to truly enjoy one of her songs through two of her albums.
woof
Meg Myers in den 80‘s? Sehr vielseitige Stimme. Eigentlich tickt es viele Boxen für mich, aber irgendwie not quite there yet. Ich könnte auch meg Myers oder everything everything oder blow hören und es machte mich zufriedener.
Bin mit der Stimme nicht so warm geworden.
- Artistic reference for Bjork, Adelle, Coldplay - Synth-pop, Prog-pop, art rock -Fuck ass album - Kinda mid ngl - NPC ass music - Voice is kinda good
I did recognize that first song which is real good. Easy listening.
I liked it more than I thought but don't need to listen to this again. Definitely sensing some Florence and the Machine inspiration here.
Waking the Witch is SPOOKY. For the most part, not for me
Ei ihan omaan makuun. Mäelle juokseminen on oiva, muuten ei tee mieli uudelleen kuunnella.
Unfortunate mixing of her voice, the instrumentals are very sleepy while her voice is VERY awake. Also tries a bit too hard to be art
running up that hill chorus is pretty iconic, my gen z rotted brain cell gets bored of the full song tho not sure if im a fan of Kate Bush's singing style... the woofs in Hounds of Love sound hilarious this style of singing and music just makes me think they're jerkign themselves off and idk, not my thing ^^; (maybe the word is "pretentious" lol)
Wasn't really familiar with her until "Running up that hill" resurfaced. Not terrible just not my thing
Don't reckon much to it, kind of odd, good instrumentals
It was a pretty good album overall, loved the hits. But the rest isn’t something I woudl listen to again, the vibe was a bit to weird for me. But it sounds like Bush is a pretty artsy creator, just maybe not totally for me. 2.5 feels right
I owned this in my youth but never gave much of a deep listen, it was a bit mellow and expressive for younger me. Loved, and still love, "Running Up That Hill", and enjoyed it's recent renaissance so a new generation could appreciate it. I excitedly dove in to see if I enjoy the album all these years later... but the album is so theatrical I know why 15 yr old me didn't get into it. "Hounds Of Love" is another familiar song, "Mother Stands For Comfort" was not good, hard to get through, same with "And Dream Of Sheep", while "Waking The Witch" was just unlistenable. The rest was just boring or insignificant. "Morning Fog" had it's moments. The listen counts are impressive with 1.4 BILLION on "Running", 50M on "Hounds" and 85M on "Cloudbusting" (average song at best) while all the others are 6M or higher. England loves her, that's 90% Brits! Too theatrical for me to enjoy. I could see oddly dressed people onstage in my mind. This would not make my Top1001, not even my Top2002. 2 stars for one amazing song.
Heard the singles but never the whole album. Some of it I really liked, some songs I had to skip. Not expecting the album to be perfect, but probably skipped more than I liked
First song on the album is good, catchy. Overall, the album sounds dated, though more creative than Madonna or Cindy Lauper. Honestly, I'd never heard of her before this.
After Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) every song that followed was a disappointment. I should like this, I should love the literature mysticality vibe, but this is just not it. 2/5
The vocals of Kate Bush are undeniable. The whole album sounds like a theater play. But I sure am not the targeted public.
i would have liked this album three years ago
Starts incredibly strong with "Running Up That Hill" but then immediately runs right off a cliff. Still, better than the last Kate Bush album I had to suffer through.
The first song is masterful, but it's downhill from there.
What an odd album. It just kept getting worse with each song.
I found this to be only slightly less annoying than “The Dreaming”. I think I just have to face the fact that Kate Bush’s music is just not for me.
Started really strong, then just kinda went... somewhere incomprehensible.
This sounds like an amalgamation of every mid 80's ballad for 47 minutes. I understand that this was supremely influential, and that's why everything else sounds like it. That doesn't mean I necessarily like it. It's not poorly made, it's not bad either. For me, it's unremarkable.
This is the fifth album from English singer Kate Bush, who does very well in the UK but no so much here. The record tends to be eclectic, but it definitely is not my taste. Seems like the music here would fit well in movie soundtracks.
Kate Bush is a bit too experimental for me.
Don't like
Let’s start with the elephant in the room. Yes, I have seen and actively enjoy watching Stranger Things. That being said, I think listening to this album has actively lessened my enjoyment of that fantastic scene. I just did NOT vibe with this album. Her voice is an enigma to me. I acknowledge that she’s got a beautiful singing voice, but God I really just do not love listening to it. The songs here are mostly passable, some of them are really annoying, some are boring, and only “Mother Stands For Comfort” is truly replayable in my eyes. “Jig Of Life” is actually pretty catchy as well. More songs I want to actively skip than replay as a whole though. I reiterate, I feel like I should like this album more and genuinely understand why people do like it, but man is it hard to listen to. I’m sorry, Kate Bush, I don’t think I’m your biggest fan.
Love running up that hill, but why is the song afterwards recorded in the shower? Doesn’t keep the level of the first song. 2,5/5 🗻
Another one I can appreciate, but it really wasn't for me.
Nope.
how did she run up the building exactly? a couple of bangers, but mostly quite weird. good for drunken interpretive dancing, but don't really understand the hype.
This is clearly an artistic concept album and I respect that, but it doesn't hit for me. The best of the album is fine, and the lows aren't too low. I'm just left feeling very neutral about it all. It's a 2.5 star, rounded down to 2. I enjoyed the effort of putting a narrative into the album. Silver lining is that the 2nd listen-through was more enjoyable. - I can hear how this album has influenced pop music today (big, bouncy drums underlining the vocals), but it's just a little too busy. Lots of moving pieces in each song. - I guess I just don't 'get' it. Even when stripped down, I'm struggling to engage with the songs - 'Cloudbusting' is a better song. Not as busy, more of a traditional band instrumentation. More accessible to the ear. - 'And Dream of Sheep' is nice too. Not my style in general, but it's nice! - 'Waking The Witch' - just when I'm warming up to the album, it gets all 80s pop and wacky again!
Never understood her popularity. Talented singer, but just don’t like the music.
Meh
The Curse of the Microprocessor What I would give to hear the isolated vocal busses of these recordings. They would be amazing. Such a beautiful expressive voice, possessed by a woman of such confidence, projecting this huge emotional range, all lost in this morass of tinny DX-7 and LinnDrum sounds driven by lifeless sequencers. Microprocessors made the recording process significantly simpler for producers. But hear what a waste that laziness made of a collection of beautiful songs. Now forever lost, tragically, in a sea of objectively unpleasant sounds.
Not my vibe
The first song and a few of the early songs were good, but I immediately got bored with them. The album started sounding like a bunch of generic 80s music I am tired of hearing. It could be a me-thing because I am so fatigued with 80s music.
Not sure why this had a big resurgence. Sucked in the 80s and still does today.
I know a lot of people like this album. It didn’t really work for me.
Cloudbursting was cool. Not really my style, not much of a fan but I can see why people enjoy her!
The first half of this album is a normal amount of weird for an 80s pop album. The second half is completely nuts - not in a way that particularly piques my interest. A truly strange album, which is refreshing in a way. But ultimately I just don't really like Kate Bush
Didn't enjoy this one much at all
Not sure I get why this is special.
Thought it was good at first but turned satanic toward the end. Lot of strange whispering and scratching sounds.
I'm a British man of a certain age. I know I am SUPPOSED to like Kate Bush. It's almost a matter of musical orthodoxy. Most of my friends profess to. Colour me a heretic, then. Her music and singing style have always left me somewhere between disinterested and irritated. Her vocal tics and affectations grate. I'll give this a 2/5 'cos that's my "All right if you like that sort of thing (I don't)" rating, as everyone tells me this is "good". I simply cannot hear it. I expect to be buried under the avalanche of 5 star reviews when I choose to look.
At this point I have listened to far more Kate Bush than I need to. This one was prob better and more accessible than the others but still doesn’t really do it for me. The fiddle came in on the jig of life and I was like what the eff just happened??? (Although I did enjoy that song).
Is Kate Bush Britain's answer to Madonna? It's VERY 80s synth-pop and not my thing at all but I guess I respect the experimentation and some of her more ambitious ideas. I'm more impressed than anything at hearing the original Hounds Of Love, as The Futureheads clearly heard something in that and turned it into an absolutely banging garage rock song that I would never have imagined possible.
She has a nice voice, but I don't like how she sings. It's sort of dramatic / operatic / spooky. I just don't think Kate Bush is for me, ultimately. I definitely see her merit, but I don't plan to return to her at all.
Huh? I don’t understand the rave reviews. Did we listen to the same album?
I get why it is iconic/influential. but this album was honestly kind of hard to listen to...
Hounds of Love Kate Bush Before Listening- I know her name. I don’t know anything about her. Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)- kind of a dancey track with some crashing guitars Hounds of Love The Big Sky- funky bass line, first notably upbeat song on the album, but I am not picking up on lyrics yet Mother Stands for Comfort Cloudbusting And Dream of Sheep Under Ice Waking the Witch Watching You Without Me Jig of Life Hello Earth The Morning Fog After Listening It's not bad. It's not my cup of tea, but I certainly didn't mind listening to it. There are some major anthems on here, that are reminiscent of the Jimmy Steinman productions- Meatloaf, Bonnie Tyler- big soaring vocals and guitars. I couldn't understand the lyrics too well, but a little motivation would have had me search these in five seconds.
It's good. Not great though. But probably seen as even more popular after Stranger Things.
Not bad overall, some interesting tracks.
nop
It's a cliche, because everything obviously is, but it's very much of it's time. The 80's in music especially pop is such a sound set in time and place. If in the right mind for 80's pop then let's hear it, if not turn it off now. This falls straight into that. Appreciate what she does as she does it her own way, but those 80s sounds. Her vocals sometimes feel unique and interesting, and sometimes (even at the same time) odd and enoying. 3 star - it's just in that middle ground for me, sometimes I want to hear it/ sometimes switch off. Expect on further listens today, -1 for it getting a bit shit in the middle whatever my mood. And strangly I find that *proper middle* englishness of it all a bit excluding and alienating, and I'm English since forever. 2 Stars - very disappointed.
this album sounds like the absolute epitome of a drug fever dream in the mid 80's. Half of the songs start out cool or have some promise, and then Kate Bush just rails like the fattest line of cocaine and takes a hard turn and goes in a completely different direction. it was hard to put my finger on where this album was actually going and what was going to happen. 5/5 stars if you wanted to experience drugs in the 80's without a time machine 2/5 stars for actual listening if you didn't experience the 80's drug scene
After Stranger Things, I thought about giving Kate Bush a try since Running Up That Hill was such a banger. Didn’t really enjoy this album then, still don’t really enjoy it now. Cloudbusting is decent but that’s about it. It’s barely a two, might even regret not giving it a one later on.
I mean, how cool is it that a song can peak almost 40 years after it was released. It's awesome that a "Running Up That Hill" being a key aspect in Stranger Things revitalized it higher than it ever was. It's even cooler that she made it through her own label and receives 100% of the royalties. Other than that fun song and fact, this album does nothing for me.
Sterk åpning, medium album
if you need music for the ride to the ren faire
Vibey but not my favorite.
didn't like it. The head voice singing becomes annoying really fast as do the synth strings and disco beat. It is definitely different from other music of its time, and the first few minutes are interesting, but after a while i lost interest.
Eh, so back and forth on this. Some great songs but not a consistent vibe and some atrocities
Not great although running up that hill is sick.
Warbly
Did not enjoy. 2/5
Not sure how this album made it on this list.
Interesting production, songs were ok, high 2.
I gave it my best shot, but no thank you
I can see how much of this was quite ground-breaking in the mid-80s. The expressive dancing, the production, the sampling, Bush's voice of course. But for me, it's very dated sounding with its really clean production and liberal use of what I think is fretless bass. And it isn't something I really have any ambition to revisit, although I absolutely think this album has earned its place on this list.
Am I being tortured? Back-to-back 80s albums? Really?
This is like a Cindi Lauper worst hits album. It has all of the most grating parts of her voice, all the worst 80s synth elements, and not one catchy song.
#4 I’m a little confused on this one. It could definitely just be a difference in taste, maybe I’m missing something, or maybe people are flat out crazy, but I have no idea how this album got as many awards as it did. I liked a few of the songs and would definitely save them, but the rest seemed a little too out there for me. I couldn’t really see the vision of cohesiveness or a through line in this album, so to me it just kinda seemed too chaotic and all over the place. Stranger things also ruined the first song for me just cuz it was so overplayed. Was really hopeful for this album but it kinda just amounted to blah. As I said, I think I might just be missing something, but for the amount of songs on the album, compared to the ones I liked, this can only really be a 2 for me personally.
Ah yes, the running up that hill album, that song got played to death a couple of years ago, making it go from rediscovered gem to overplayed. 2*, only because not really my jam. Highlights: jig of life (love the irish influence)
I wanna know if this was in the list before stranger things, coz it’s not the best thing I’ve heard
It’s not the worst 80’s shot I’ve ever heard, but there’s a lot of shit out there so the bar is so low it’s starting to sink down into the shit
non m'è piaciuto

very 80s. a few hits but other than that not a crazy album
Would this album be on the list if the song Running up that Hill wasn’t featured on Stranger Things?
I respect that everyone seems to love it, but I just really, really don’t get it. “Running Up That Hill” is great, but otherwise…meh. Just not my thing I guess. 2.5/5
One of those artists who I think will never be my thing. Side 2 was more interesting and Jig of Life was my favourite track, but I find her voice a bit weird and off-putting. A unique sound, though, which counts for something on my book.
I like her, but there were only a couple of songs that didn't sound just like all the others. "Running Up That Hill" and "Cloudbusting" were those two. An entire album of her just didn't do it for me.
"Waking the witch" was horrible, the other songs were pretty good. Kate Bush is not really my style (80s fem pop), but it was mostly enjoyable. There were some weird moments where the lyrics were intentionally accelerated like it was on fast forward and became gibberish; I don't understand the appeal of that choice.
Only recognized the first song. Apparently she was pretty big in the 80s. I don't really understand why (although This Woman's Work is spectacular). Waking the Witch was interesting... Overall, probably never need to hear this again (including Running Up that Hill...that song sucks. Ya I said it)
Growing up names like Madonna, Cyndi, Toni Basil, Toni Braxton and Whitney ruled the radio. I vaguely remember hearing Kate Bush but she didn’t stand out in the field of R&B queens and pop princesses. After listening to this album I think her music was to cerebral for pop, blending her rich vocals with synth-heavy melancholy. I was surprised when “Deal with God” made such a comeback a few years ago, rumor has it due to the Netflix show Stranger Things. Honestly, Big Sky was a better song. I don’t know if I would listen to this again. After a little while the songs began to blend together for me. Maybe it’s because I had already given my heart to Cyndi and Whitney years ago: one heart but an ear for each.
Did you know that Hounds of Love is Kate Bush's mating call to Ozzy Osborn!? It's true, look it up. Kate Bush, a longtime fan of Ozzy (and also Sabbath) heard 'Bark at the Moon' in '83 and responded by writing 'Hounds of Love' in '85. (Sure, Ozzy only may have responded because he thought Kate Bush was a line of cocaine). Rumor has it every October 31st at midnight they would rendezvous in the Paris 'moonlight' to consummate their secret love. Without that tidbit of information hiding in the nether regions of the internet, this album would be quite boring ... don't you agree?
I’m glad that the original “Running Up That Hill” again exploded in popularity after its inclusion on “Stranger Things.” It’s a really cool song. But it’s also been covered numerous times since “Hounds of Love” - sometimes better than the original. My favorite is Meg Myers’ 2020 version. Really, the song had already had its resurgence multiple times over the years thanks to Myers and others. The rest of the album never makes it up that hill. I’m generally not a fan of Bush’s voice. Too high and childish - she’s got great range and has a good ability to swing from low and husky to - What was “Waking the Witch”!? Maybe even better suited for a horror show than “Running Up That Hill.” Was Bush trying to have her “Thriller” moment? That deserved a single and a music video, but it did not make for a pleasant listen.
This album is Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God), which is great, and not much else. The second single, Cloudbusting, is bad. Under Ice is bad. Waking The Witch is bad. Jig Of Life is bad. Parts of this album remind me of the movie Labrynth…a movie I like. Why, like Spyder with a Y, I don’t know.
I listened to this like a month ago and thought maybe i didn’t get it but regret giving it another chance. It’s not awful it’s just really not my cup of tea
I genuinely really like Running Up That Hill (shout out to The Vampire Diaries soundtrack) and I ironically love a Kate Bush song not on this album (Wuthering Heights music video 5ever) but the rest of this is very meh for me. For someone who loves theatre and over the top music, the vast majority of this is too out there for me
I gotta be honest, I found this kind of grating. I know it gets glazed by people who wanna show off their musical street cred to teenagers who just heard of her from Stranger Things. Despite how experimental and interesting some of her sounds were, I can't say I found them all that appealing to listen to.
It's Kate Bush, but it's not really my sound - Jig Of Life is good though.
3 st
Very 80s. One hit for me. Not great as a whole. 2/5
Good voice. Some good songs. Didn’t hit her stride until the tv show.
I can see her allure and why her music connects with so many. But it does nothing for me.
OK, but nothing exciting to my ears.
I have never understood this type of music. The 80s just had so much of it. It just feels like mediocre (or even poor) singing backed by synth keyboards and electronic drums. There's nothing particularly exciting about the music and it doesn't feel ground-breaking. The singing on every singing sounds like its using the exact same notes and scales to every other song. Even though they aren't alike other than genre, I feel like Kate Bush feels is the Wish version of Annie Lennox. "Cloudbusting" is the only song on the album I like through the first 5 songs. It has a more orchestrated score and better singing than the previous 4 tracks. In general the second half of the album far exceeds the first half in terms of composition, but it's still just not for me.
The songs all have the same feel and sound and there is not much variety
A lot of it sounds the same to me. She has a nice voice….its really a 2.5 for me…..BUT if I listened again it could be a 3….
Songs sound the same with not much variety
Not bad enough to get the abysmal 1/5, but not good enough to even get a 2
Was meh
Tons of Smiths and Bush records recently. Not my favorite artists
the first song became popular because of Stranger Things. The rest sounds like a dated 80's album.
Fine for a listen in the background, however I did take a bathroom break in the middle of it and didn't bother to go back to what I had missed.
Its okay.
While I appreciate the affect Ms. Bush’s work has had on many artists I like, from Bjork to Lana, I’ve never taken to it. It never sounds lush to me in the way its supposed to. She sounds like she’s trying way too hard to convince me of her deeply felt artistic sensibilities. On the second half of this album, especially, the faux orchestral routine is almost too much to bear. Also, I abhor songs that posit that God might want to “swap our places,” or might be “a stranger on a bus.” Dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. If God exists (I know how I feel about it, but I’m not trying to convince anybody of anything), we are almost too minuscule to be of consideration, much less anyone They want to trade places with.
It was okay
Loved the first track. The rest wasn’t really my thing
She's just not for me...
I'm not crazy about her voice and it's mixed oddly quiet. I appreciate the songs being structured in a different way, but with a near complete lack of hooks or sensible composition it was just hard to get into.
Minus the one with the demon voice and the Irish Spring jingles it’s fine. I guess I mean track one is a classic.
Held up by Running Up the Hill
Meh
Je comprend l'importance, super voix, mais j'accroche moyen.
Pretty unaware of Kate Bush aside from her resurfaced popularity from Stranger Things. It's not for me, but I get why folks like it. A different time, maybe.
Second Kate Bush album on the list...and can confirm that I'm just not the biggest fan.
Weird AF.
This did not resonate with me. I don’t care for Kate Bush’s voice, I find it irritating, I can’t put my finger on why that is. There was some cool instrumentation on the album, but as a whole I didn’t like the songs. I know this album has a ton of accolades, I guess it’s just not for me.
Got bored halfway through.
Other than Running the the Hill, I did not enjoy this at all. 1.5 stars
Good voice but this album doesn’t do it for me
I’ve listened a few times now, and it just doesn’t connect with me.
Definitely not my thing. I can appreciate what she's doing, and that this is objectively kind of cool but it really didn't appeal to me.
She has as good a voice as her contemporaries, including (and maybe even better than) Madonna. But, it's wasted on these weird arrangements and over-dramatic songs.
Lead off track reminds me of Stranger things.
Mooie stem maar ook wel depression town
She is intense. Never heard of her until Stranger Things. I didn’t hate it, but my family did. Not sure it’s an all timer.
Loved about the first half of the album but then things got really 80’s and weird
It’s fine
Meh.
netflix ahh
Vaya conyàs de disc tu, m'ha costat escoltar-lo. Salvaria una cançó o dues com a molt, però em sembla que és víctima del pitjor estil de música pop de la seva època i ha envellit fatal. Expected Lorenzo rating: 2
Running up that hill is good. Rest is meh 80s pop imo.
Started off decent but the end of the album was trash
came to the realisation that i dislike her voice
3 good songs. Rest was weird
Disappointing, a song does not make a great album. Wouldn't care to hear a second time
It's whatever, really. 2 out of 5. No AI necessary for this one. The best part of the album is the "wake up" voices that are panned for a trippy effect. Really, that's it. Favorites: The Big Sky
I feel like I don't like fairies enough to appreciate this album
Not into this. Kate has a nice voice but the music does little to interest me. Adult contemporary soundscapes. I started to enjoy a couple of the later, more experimental pieces toward the back half of the album but even those seemed to drift away from my interest as they fell into the same monotonous synthy tones as the rest. Honestly it was depressing to listen to.
Mag die Stimme nicht
I don’t get this album at all. Except for the beautiful And Dream of Sheep, and the haunting Under Ice, there is nothing here I really enjoy. I read the raving reviews and try to understand its greatness, but no. I don’t like the songs. I will not listen to this album again if I have the choice. Which is a shame, cause I really like the song Wuthering Heights, and was excited to delve further into her discography.
Annoying album and voice
Kate is Running Up That Hill but got very sleepy with Sheep’s and Under the Ice. So really start strong and downhill from there. (1.5*s)
Some weird hypno pop, few hits in there but I didn’t really like it 2.8/5
I know people love Kate Bush but I just couldn’t get into her style. I liked Running up That Hill and Hounds of Love, both of which I knew from covers first. The pleasant surprises were Watching you Without Me and The Morning Fog. Most of the time it felt like I was listening to the soundtrack of a psychadelic 80s cartoon like the Last Unicorn. I’ve slightly amended my original opinion of her - unlistenable mad wailing lady - to experimental mad lady who sometimes wails. What was going on with Waking the Witch??
Too 80s for my vibe
Apologies to a R&R HoF recipient, but I am not a fan of the music. It is a beautiful voice, and it fails to hold my interest.
A little too much avant craziness for me
1. running up that hill - 2.5 2. houndz of love - 1 3. the big zky - 0 4. mother ztandz - 0 5. cloudbuzting - 1 6. dream of zheep - 1 7. under ice - 0 8. the uuitch - 0 9. uuatching - 1.5 10. jig of life - 0 11. hello earth - 1.5 12. morning fog - 1
Why are ppl so into this exactly???
I don't really get Kate Bush, which is probably more of a me problem than a her problem. Clearly she's very good at what she does, but I just don't think what she does is for me
Feels very 80’s for sure.
Described as the first cross-section of pop and prog rock with 80s production dominant throughout. Not really my jam (too 80s sounding) but Kate Bush was weirdly hot in the 80s. 2.5 if I'm being generous
I don't get it. This is a slightly less than mediocre album with lots of sound the same songs. It's 80's adult contemporary before it was considered adult contemporary.
Kate Bush..
Pois sen máis, gustoume 1 canción e xa verdade, non moi recomendabel
This album is odd. I don't think it's bad but it feels very experimental and a bit all over the place with a psychedelic vibe. Some of the songs I enjoyed more didn't really finish on that big note I was expecting. Like an album version of edging Even 'Running up that hill' doesn't finish as big as I think it should. It's a good song but it's not a 5/5 for me
Definitivamente no es para mi. Se salvan 2/12 y por los pelos. Una por ser famosa por stranger things y la otra por las gaitas irlandesas
