All of a sudden Kate Bush is being discovered and heralded as a great female vocalist thanks to Stranger Things. She's always been in that hmmm, I don't know if I like it or if this is out of my league. Hounds of Love spans a range of styles, some fun and some straying into Fine Arts major justifying 'their creativity'. 3.5/5.

Yes, it’s sublime 80s pop, but Kate Bush would never just stop at that. She weaves a landscape of dreams and nightmares, longing and love, sex and anger, that never fails to dizzy or entrance.

Very interesting production, almost no cymbals on the entire album. Some incredible engineering and sound design for the time. Definitely not a "party" album, best listened to as a body of artistic work geared towards personal introspection. Can be challenging at times. Bookended with two excellent pop songs.

Great bass lines, modern sound pop even when it has more than 30 years. Excellent album.

I've never listened to Kate Bush before and it was far more experimental than I expected (an opinion which I suppose was based entirely on her common sounding name). Very interesting soundscape and much of it doesn't even sound dated -- the percussion samples are pretty bad, but the synths are quite nice and the mixing is great. The song structures are also inventive. I'll be revisting this for sure.

Always felt like Kate Bush was too overrated, still think that. That being said, this isn’t a bad album, just nog as great imo as others make it out to be

Brilliant album. Each song better than I previously remember, probably helped listening from album from start to finish. Starts with upbeat melodies and gets more slow and eclectic with each track

Is this the best album by a woman ever? Very possibly. Kate's vocal range is impeccable, always crystal clear and full of emotion. It's only strengthened by her songwriting. She knows how to write about feeling feelings. The backing tracks (which I read she also produced) are superb throughout and have aged remarkably well considering their ambition. We go from driving bass, guitar and synth lines in the first half to jigs, reels and space like organs later on. The whole thing is a god damn movie.

Starts off strong with one of the best pop/altpop/artpop songs ever and follows up strong with the whole first half of the album. The second half is also crackers. I don't know what's going on in Waking the Witch but it fires off the neurones in my brain for its eccentricity - YOU MUST WAKE UP. Second half is made even better when you realise that it's a conceptual half about a woman drifting alone at sea at night. FIVE ESTRELLAS

This album makes me feel like I’m lost in the forbidden forest, but out of the darkness a pixie woman emerges and guides me to her pixie village.

This is a really bold album. The tracks are so strange in places, with tons of variation is music and tone. It's not a typical singer-songwriter approach at all. Overall I found it interesting.

Opened with a track that’s super popular right now, a few meaningless but fun songs after that which had me thinking I might not mind this album Then it got weird, did not enjoy: And dream of sheep, waking witch, jig of life I suppose that might be a metaphor for life, and in the end, the album ends 3/5

I like Kate Bush! I knew that, so my enjoyment of this album is no surprise. I had not listened to this whole album through before, though. Together the songs are vocally and musically interesting, with some strange, art surprises grown in ("Waking the Witch"). Favourites include "Running Up That Hill" (even as many times I have heard it over the past year, it's still great), "Hounds of Love," and "Mother Stands for Comfort," though all of them are neat-o.

This got pretty weird by the end but the first 2 tracks are good enough to secure the cuatro. The whole thing kind of felt like a musical.

Ed - write something about Stranger Things but being there the first time around. Donald Sutherland video. Hounds of Love is ace - however I think I actually prefer the Futureheads' version! Probably blasphemous opinion. The refreshingly mental Waking the Witch, what on earth is going on there. Can't think of words. It's Kate Bush, it's very good.

This is alright. A single vocalist with backing music, it's very chill. I love that Stranger Things created a resurgence for Kate Bush.

Love it. It was great back in '85, and it stood the test of time. Cloudbusting is one of my favourite songs ever, and the entire album is one of my favourite albums of all time.

If not for Stranger Things S04, would not enjoy it as much as I do.

Spellblinding songs. Kate has always been totally talented and unique and so very scary. These are some of my favourite songs by her. Yes they are Pop rather than anything else but distinctive and could only have been written by her.

10/10 incredible album, but I feel like a dipshit listening to “that one song from Stranger Things”

What's ironic is the song on stranger things is the least strange song on this album. Very forward thinking and adventurous album that takes some big swings and makes contact more than misses. I hope this opened up the eyes of some young bucks discovering this album into the wonderful world of art rock.

Kind of timeless-sounding chamber pop. Really like it.

Uhhh.... this was a hard one for me to rate fairly I think. I know that the album is extremely good at being... what it was - a weird, synthy, artsy 80's pop album full of hairspray and nasal-y vocals. However, it's just not for me. I get that Kate Bush's dramatic voice really adds to what she wants her music to mean, but I don't like it all. I probably won't ever listen to this album - or any songs from it - again.

Deel 1 is een verzameling oorwurmen, die ik naarmate ik ouder word (en de jaren 80 meer ga waarderen) beter kan hebben dan vroeger. Deel 2 is luisteren naar bezwerende hymnes van een toverkol die rond haar heksenketel danst op een verlaten strand in het noorden van Ierland.

An absolute mystical album. An A-side where every song is of such high quality that all could be a single (and I think even were) And the B-side with a full concept album of her near-death experience with the woman adrift at sea metaphor. An absolute classic.

Some great songs and some weird songs very interesting album worth a listen at least once.

It's a masterpiece

Looks like I've been listening to Kate Bush on the radio for years, but never actually knew those are her songs. Especially recently, with the success of Stranger Things, Hound of Love has been featured pretty often in popculture. I haven't seen the series, and I'm actually not a big fan of the song "Running Up The Hill", but the rest of the album is very intriguing! I have to admit, every song here is a hit or miss - Kate likes to experiment a lot with her music and it really shows. What's interesting, even though many of the beats or melodies sound so much like any generic 80s song, every track still feels original and different to what we can listen to nowadays. Songs like "Hounds of Love", "Hello Earth" or "Jig of Life" sound like nothing else before. Even though some of the tracks are rather mediocre, the overall reception of the album is really good. Call me a fan of Kate from now on.

Utterly brilliant in every way. Innovative, beautiful, haunting and stupidly good. Nothing is quite like it. An essential record.

Cool but a lil dramatic to listen to often.

Very easy 5. Obviously she has a great voice, but I couldn't really care less what voice someone is born with. Pairing it with her virtuosic production, however, and then you have one of the best pop albums ever.

Interesting, eclectic, but definitely dated. Running Up That Hill is the only song that really grabs me and that has a lot of nostalgic elements. Jig Of Life is another track I could spend time with. I don't think this album aged so well, but it's existence does hold some merit.

This sounds really different than a lot of what I’ve heard from the 80s. I found it a lot more interesting than the other 80s stuff on this list, the Irish influences are especially cool.

I believe there are two types of Kate Bush albums - great and greater. This is one of, if not, the best. Her first self-produced release may not sound experimental now, but it certainly was at the time. It was sophisticated pop unlike anything else at the time. It married technology (largely the Fairlight digital synthesizer, which she mastered), to the sensuous pop she had developed over her earlier releases. The attention to detail is startling and helps create a soundscape that has been tremendously influential for decades to come. It was so far ahead of its time that the "rediscovery" of Running Up That Hill in 2022 isn't really surprising at all.

A well put together album, though some of it was a little too out there for me. However, this must have been very Influential to many artists who came afterwards in synth pop, indie rock and maybe even electronic dance music?

She has released back to back perfection and The Hounds of Love is NOOOO different I'm quite ecstatic that this is my first album of the year Running Up That Hill - 9.5/10 Hounds Of Love - 10/10 The Big Sky - 9.5/10 Mother Stands For Comfort - 8/10 Cloudbusting - 1000/10 The first half of the album are hits exemplified, they truly are the epitome of excellence, I loved her vocals and I am a huge fan of the synths. People oftentimes shit on the 80s decade but I think some of the most important albums in history came from this period. (Remain In Light, Thriller, Like A Prayer etc.) And Dream Of Sheep - 8/10 Under The Ice - 8/10 Waking The Witch - 8.5/10 Watching You Without Me 8/10 Jig Of Life - 9/10 Hello Earth - 9.5/10 Morning Fog - 10/10 The story behind this shocks me and impresses me each time. I love the sea shanty, Irish jig vibe that is going on during the Jig Of Life. Morning Fog is so compelling and I can't believe the storyline that is going on here. I can't believe that she was doing this between the ages of 25-27. Very ahead of her time and ICONIC. The first time I listened to this album, I kind of checked out halfway but still appreciated what I had heard to and ugh, I don't know how she or anyone could top it! And she produced this!!! Triple threat and legend I must say. My fave album from her and I will probably recommend this to everyone hopefully they appreciate it as much as I do

Side one is nearly perfect. Gorgeous melodies. Sympathetic production and tastefully arranged. Side 2 is only slightly less compelling but still wonderful listen. More dramatically arranged with classical strings it has the feel of an opera but it works without a hint of irony or pretense that would make the material seem trite. But it always sounds appropriate in its dramatic presentation. By the time Jig of Life comes up it introduces a nice stylistic change to English Folk which a bring a nice change in tempo and mood. It ends off with a more traditionally structured pop song that is really quite gorgeous. A beautiful album. 4.5 stars

Utterly glorious. The bar that everyone is trying to run up that hill to clear ever since.

Starts off with a song everyone knows. And re-knows. I cant really get into the rest as much.

It really starts strong and it is solid, interesting, ethereal at times and pretty inventive. But it takes a crazy turn at Waking the Witch and then doesn't seem to get back on track.

Heart sank when this was my next recommendation. In the year Running up the hill has been played to death thanks to stranger things. But I was surprised how much I enjoyed it. Some great songs and a pleasant atmospheric listen

I'll give her this - her sound is very unique. The first half of the CD are more radio-friendly songs like "Running Up That Hill," which are okay. The back half becomes a concept album with the songs pretty much the same.

Alright, Kate Bush. Let's try this again. Running Up That Hill is pretty great. And that Gen X music snob inside me really wants to not like it because it got popular again through a nostalgia porn show. But it's good! Still, I feel the same way I do about this one as I did the last one - there's something that's too much about it. It's like fingernails on a chalkboard. I can't do it.

An eeeeever so slightly overrated Kate Bush, in terms of critical acclaim, but what does that mean in particular? Still better than ninety percent of what's out there. I prefer the warmer production of Bush's earlier work; and I think I respect the artsier, more avant garde Sensual World. Some fans may consider this the best of all possible worlds. I think it's pretty dam fine.

Enjoyed this one much more than the last Bush (unlike the Presidents Bush), but I've got some work to do before I'd call myself a fan. The first track is a no-brainer, and I am on board with the 80s synth pop moments here. But in other areas it's just all a bit too theatrical for me and my persnickety druthers. I see signs that I could warm up to it eventually, so just be patient bros.

Love her voice. Grooves are smooth and make transitions within the structure feel completely natural.

TIL that Kate Bush is pretty friggin' weird. I respect her willingness to let her freak flag fly, but it appears her music's not really my bag.

I've never been a fan of Kate Bush even though I should...I'm big into weird female vocals & arrangements. After giving her another listen, I now realize how incredibly talented she is. I still stand by not liking her style of piano. It's a bit too melodramatic for me. Still, I'm glad she came up on this challenge.

The second half goes wayward. 5 stars for the first half, 3 for the second.

Kate Bush has a nice voice, but this is a little slow, light, and basic for my taste. Only the first song is a real standout, and it's even kind of slow. There's too many songs that are just total start-to-finish duds, like "Mother Stands for Comfort" and "Under Ice", neither of which really does anything. There's not a lot of diversity, and even some of the stronger tracks, like "Cloudbusting" and "Running Up That Hill" sound exactly the same throughout, they just don't develop their main idea at all. This CD seems like it's supposed to function as a vocal showcase for Bush, but she's not quite a good enough singer to make that work well, and on some of the songs most devoted to that concept, like "And Dream of Sheep", she never really takes over and fully opens her voice up, she's content to be just another background instrument. That leaves the overall sounds kind of rudderless and drifting - so fine background music, but not something I'd put on again.

I've listened to this album a lot recently, as my daughter discovered it via Stranger Things. I don't recall being interested in it back when it came out, but I enjoy it now!

Everyone knows Running Up That Hill, and if they didn't they did during the Stranger Things resurgence. I don't know what I expected but overall, a solid album overall but nothing stands out quite like that first track.

Kate Bush is absolutely a one-of-the-kind, other-worldly and extraordinary queen of art pop. It really takes a literal genius to make music quite magical like this. "Hound Of Love" are undeniably unmatched by any other album. There's nothing quite like this experience, which feels at least like an acid trip or out-of-the-body experience. What I appreciate in this album is definitely the spiritual meaning behind the lyrics and folk accents, which both are intensifying the feeling of fascination and attraction towards this music. Every single element has its own reason here and it plays a crucial role in the understanding of Kate Bush's music purpose. The album has its own dramatic yet very romantic and delicate atmosphere which I believe is impossible to replicate in any way. Favourite track: "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God), no least favourite tracks (obviously).

Obviously one of the greatest pop albums of all time, and an essential listen. The best song on this album has to be Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God), and perhaps it is the greatest pop song ever. I find that the rest of the album doesn't live up to the astounding high point of the first track, but the rest does still feel like a great pop album. Favorite songs: Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God), Under Ice, Cloudbusting, Hello Earth 8/10

I listened to this record last month. It was AMAZING. Kate Bush is one of the best artists ever! My favourite on this album is definitely Hounds Of Love.

Had some friends tell me I should go back and give Kate Bush a listen a couple years ago. Then Cloudbursting was used in an episode of The Handmaid's Tale and I finally listened to this album and was really digging it. Then the whole Stranger Things thing happened and it blew the fuck up. Glad she got a bunch of new fans. She deserves them.

Glad to see that Kate is finally getting the recognition in the US she has always deserved, thanks to Stranger Things. Hoping to see a few more ladies in this list soon, it has been a bit of a sausage fest so far!

I love this album! It makes me feel like I'm a Celtic witch running across the forest along with wolves and birds. That's the only way I can explain how I feel about it...

I’ve heard this one a few times. It does get better each time I hear it, but most of the time, I feel like it is the first time hearing it… none of the songs, besides Running Up that Hill, stick with me - at first. 3.5/5

Feels like Kate Bush is putting me to sleep - but that's not a bad thing. This is not so much an album but an experience, and there's nothing quite like it. It sings you a lullaby, it wakes you up and takes you to a dream world, it evokes some religious imagery, it sounds like witchcraft, it all just sounds extremely unique. That said I don't think I would go back to this album very often, but I do appreciate how it sounds, and I have to give props to some of the standout tracks like Running up that Hill, The Big Sky, & And Dream of Sheep.

So Kate Bush back in the news after 30 years, due to Stranger Things. While nice for reminiscing, I liked this as much now as I did back in 85, not very much. She has a nice voice and Running up that hill is ok, but rest of album lost me. Quite a few what the hell songs. 1 to 1.5 Right after this ended on my Spotify, next 2 songs were Head over heels and How soon is now. Not sure I'd put this album in same genre as The Smiths and Tears for Fears

3.5 I don’t even watch Stranger Things and I know Running Up that hill because of it. Listening to it here I wonder about it’s context in the show. Nevertheless this was pretty okay. I liked a lot of the music but her voice was a little off at times. I could see her unusual style growing on me over time but for now it’s my biggest detractor. 2 My roommate is close friends with a couple from the UK who adore Kate Bush, who then proceeded to get my roommate into Kate Bush, and now I hear too much Kate Bush for my own damn good (Stranger Things also didn't help). So, I kind of groaned starting this album, as it sounded like everything else I've heard from her - very generic 80s pop. While I don't necessarily mind that kind of music, it doesn't feel like there's much here that I haven't heard before. Side B on this album at least went in a little bit of a different, experimental direction that I appreciated at first, but it started losing me again towards the end. To me, it feels like she wanted to explore two different genres/concepts, but didn't venture far enough into either direction to do them justice and ended up with an all-around mediocre album. Sorry Brits, but I'm another American who doesn't get it. Favorite songs: Jig of Life, Running Up That Hill

I love Kate Bush and this album, despite Stranger Things. Hounds of Love continues to demonstrate Bush's talents, but: 1. I don't think it let her show off her unique vocal talents as much as some of her other albums (The Kick Inside is the example that always pops into my head). 2. The album oozes with originality and innovation (take the first few seconds of Cloudbusting as an example), but at the same time it also carries that eighties dating stamp all over. P.S. Can't wait for the album I consider Bush's best, by far, The Kick Inside. I don't know exactly why, but each of the songs there seems to speak directly to me, in a manner that Hounds of Love doesn't achieve.

I love 80s style synthy music so this is right up my alley. Some of the world music style stuff didn't really hit with me, for example jig of life felt like a really strange mashup of genres that didn't completely come together. Cloudbusting is my favorite on this album, it has so much feeling behind it and it's hopeful and hopeless all at the same time. Overall great album

Apart from Running up that Hill from Stranger things - i've never listened to Kate Bush before. What a treat - she's got such a disticnt voice and style. A pleasure to hear 'Cloudbusting' - which I recognised from the Utah Saints cover from the 90s. She's pretty ecletic, this felt more like some form of modern opera-piece that anything else. Very descriptive song writing.

Ah this is so much more than 1 song. That song. Sit back and listen to how sharp Kate Bush is, how well produced the musicianship is. What a cracking album.

After “The Dreaming,” this is a welcomed change. I dreaded this album, but I am happy to say it was enjoyable. We should all just focus on this, and forget “The Dreaming” ever happened.

I'm not sure what to give this, probably more listens will reveal itself to me, but I will just rate this 8/10 for now, even if this might bump down in the future upon relistening I think I kind of loved it? Not sure, but damn, what an interesting listen for an 80's pop record

This is a somewhat strange album to be reviewing now after the resurgence of Running Up That Hill as a result of its use in Stranger Things. While I don't particularly get everyone's fascination with that song (it's good, but I don't think of it as a hidden gem from the past), this album is really cool. It's distinctively 80s in its musical composition and production, but the style of it is really cool. It doesn't feel as boxy and restricted as a lot of synth pop music is. The songs have a lot of life and organic elements to them. Bush's voice is a key component of the alchemy. It's hard to identify why this works so well with her voice in particular, but I don't think this album would sound as good with someone else in front of it 4/5

Incredible album from start to finish. Definitely need to listen all the way through, especially the second half. Standouts for me were Jig of Life, Hello Earth, and And Dream of Sheep.

Beautiful album. Absolute classic.

Instantly recognized the purple cover of Kate Bush lying down with a couple of dogs. It's the one with "Running Up That Hill". It's currently a hot track because it appeared in the Netflix series, "Stranger Things". My sisters loved the show. Apparently, it was set in the '80s. "Stranger Things" also featured other '80s artists including The Clash and of course Metallica. But Kate Bush's popular single is the most Tiktok friendly. So unsurprisingly, it took storm in the internet. Personally however, I didn't really care about it. Once when my sisters and I were hanging out, we tried listening to the whole song. Halfway through, one of my sisters said it was longer than she thought. I agree, it's quite long. Only it isn't. It's 5 minutes long. And even after listening to it again now, I still don't care about it. Sure, it has a decent sound, but it's still a mildly annoying '80s synthpop song. And that's the album as a whole, boring '80s pop. This album is decent. It's well-produced and it has some great sounds. I don't really see anything interesting about Kate Bush as a singer. Her voice is shaky (idk if it's distorted or it's just her or both) and a bit generic. As a whole, it's quite boring.

The beginning starts off with 2 good songs and then nothing.

Altogether pretty good, even beyond the big hits. The production is spot on.

This album feels like an unfinished demo on almost every level. The lyrics read like works-in-progress, the vocals feel like phoned-in scratches, and all of the songs sound like the engineer forgot to unmute half of the tracks before bouncing the mix to tape. I know this was a huge hit for Kate... but I can't for the life of me understand why. The only thing I can think is that it must have been just a bit more interesting than its contemporaries. 1985 was a rough year for music...

I was into this album after it was released, but before Stranger Things made it popular. Doubling down on hipsterism. Is hipsterism still a thing? Anyway, album is good.

The only Kate Bush album I've heard front to back, it was nice to revisit this and be reminded how forward-thinking and freaky she can be outside the singles. The transitions from track to track are also magnificent. It's my favorite Kate Bush but I also need to listen to more of her stuff.

I liked the album alot except for the first song, I just think it's kind of overplayed and not her strongest song. The genre isn't really what I usually like but I enjoyed it. 8/10

I was not familiar with Kate Bush until Running Up That Hill was played during Stranger Things. Everyone then proceeded to cream their jeans over that song and Kate Bush. Running Up That Hill is featured on this album. The album is definitely an 80s album with a hint of Irish music. I didn't skip any songs. Not sure I would listen to the entire album again.

Had heard some tracks but recently listened the first time the whole way through because of the Stranger Things hype and it's a masterpiece. Cloudbusting huge, Running Up That Hill, Hounds of Love. That whole second side run. Love it.

Best Song: Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God). I'm writing this review in a post Stranger Things S4 world, which undeniably changed the impact of this song. Still, I'm glad this song was given a spotlight as it really is excellent. Everything works here: the strong vocals, future-synth sounds, and interesting lyrics. Worst Song: And Dream Of Sheep. There is only so much ballad I can take, and this song is too much ballad. Overall: Other than the effect of Stranger Things, this was my first exposure to Kate Bush's music. I was really impressed with the diversity and creativity of music on offer here. From elevated, 80s-style anthems to weird and interesting tracks like "Jig of Life". There are a few slower, forgettable tracks in the middle, but overall the breadth covered here impressive. Combined with Kate Bush's unique and powerful lyrics and vocal performances, I can understand why she has such a significant following.

Fantastic album and Kate Bush’s most accessible. This album has really grown on me. You could draw a lot of parallels to the music of Pink Floyd which makes sense seeing as David Gilmour was the one who discovered her. The instrumentation piano/synths/drums/ lyrics are all excellent

A conveniently timed album to receive thanks to Running Up That Hill's resurgence on the charts from its feature in Stranger Things. And although that song definitely hooked me into Kate Bush's work, I didn't really gain a great appreciation for her until listening to this album two years ago. It was COVID time and stuck in lockdown, Running came up a lot on song radios and decided to check Hounds Of Love out. The thing that stood out the most then was The Ninth Wave suite. After some decent to great pop songs, you got a soft lullaby which after a somber gathering of clouds, bursts over Waking Up The Witch which scared the shit out of me. It was so dark and sinister after the first side being joyous and a bit happy with songs like Cloudbusting, The Big Sky and the title track. The Ninth Wave then goes to a calm state before going Celtic in Jig Of Life, a resurgence in Hello Earth and then the curtain call in Morning Fog. It was such an interesting listen as you have a pop artist whose prime was the 70s/80s and they could do both great singles, and weird as hell concepts and suites. Since then I have gotten the album on vinyl and listened to a bunch of Kate Bush's albums and though she isn't in my top 3 artists, have gained a massive amount of respect and love for her. And post Stranger Things, I am very pleased her work is in the limelight again, and hopefully some of those who came for Running, will like this album and some of her other works.

Amazing art pop album, truly a classic. Absolutely deserves a 5 if not for 1 small thing. I'm pretty sure that I suffered physical damage listening to that oscillating effect on my headphones. It's really hard to listen to it without getting a headache which is a shame...

This album is phenomenal. People will (finally) listen to Kate Bush again due to Stranger Things and it's inclusion of Running Up That Hill. And that's OK, because it is an excellent song. But the rest of the album is no less fascinating. It defies genre definitions: Pop meets Art Rock meets Folk meets Chorale .... (I could go on.) Among the twelve tracks on this album nearly every single one is different, and each has something new just waiting to be discovered. The first side (which includes Running Up That Hill) is slightly more pop oriented. Running... , Hounds Of Love, The Big Sky and Cloudbusting are real standouts. The second side is more of a concept album. The listener needs to pay more attention here, but is rewarded with excellent music. Forget everything you thought you knew about 80s music, this album is something else. 5/5

not a huge fan of the ballads

Running up that Hill was as good as the buzz around it (Stranger Things). Pretty sure it's something I heard a couple of times in the wayback but couldn't put my finger on it. Some Bjork sound, haunting female vocals remind me of others in the best ways (F. Apple, J. Newsom). Like to think about the impression this album would have made on folks when it first came out.

What a ride of a listen. I saw someone post that Kate Bush is a literary musician, and I really think that fits. She has a beautiful, haunting voice that carries the album far, but it's in her lyrics that you can really get lost. Some of the songs are weird, but they add to the overall aesthetic of the album. It's unique, and in a really, really good way!

Must be the first album I have had (and will probably be the only one) that has the current UK number one single on it! Very good, if a bit samey, but she is a great singer and songwriter. Some of the sound effects are pretty odd, but not in a bad way. Cloudbusting is my favourite, with the two big singles close behind. 3 1/2 🌟 for me, but rounds up to 4

I'm writing this right after the Netflix series Stranger Things made "Running Up That Hill" a hit in the charts again. But then again, I didn't really need a TV series to be at least aware of Kate Bush's magnum opus, from which this song is the opener. And on a closer listen, I can finally understand the myriad ways in which this record is a treasure trove, and why it is so loved by fans. Its first side ("Hounds Of Love" proper) is not only filled with hits but also with incredible arrangements transcending often off-kilter songwriting skills. In the realm of pop, I'm usually a sucker for verse-chorus-verse structures, but this is not really how Bush proceeds, is it? Her pop songs are more driven by very careful progressions starting from one single idea, and this is where her devilish arrangements--a lot of them handled by herself through synths and whatnot--are playing a key part. Whether they enter the scene as bass drums ("Running Up That Hill"), strings staccatos ("Hounds Of Love" and "Cloudbusting" ), or infectious, frantically slapped basslines ("The Big Sky"), such arrangements are always bringing a peculiar atmosphere that makes such pop songs one-of-a-kind, almost "goth" in their intent. *Some* of those flourishes sound admittedly a little dated today (I still dream of a version of "Cloudbusting" without that oversimplistic binary drum part, with just the strings, for instance), but even those have their quaint charms now. And Kate's vocal work is rich enough to make up for those somewhat dated flaws anyway. Such work is often mellifluous, expansive and mystical--with even Bulgarian chants overtones sometimes, not up to a Meredith Monk-level of craziness, but quirky enough to keep you on your toes. Yet this voice that muses and yodels and grunts and coaxes can also be restrained from time to time, as in the delicate "Mother Stands For Comfort", whose synths, basslines and ambiguous lyrics about the mother of a possible murderer haven't aged a day... In the second part of the record, The Ninth Wave suite, Bush then goes to a full experimental mode, and this where her genius shines the most. Even more than on the first, more "normal" side, she uses her kaleidoscopic voice the way a painter uses a color palette, adding spots and dots and streaks throughout the suite, dizzying the listener into a sonic whirlwind (I'm pretty sure Björk or Tori Amos took a lot of notes here). This second side places the listener in media res inside a loose tale about death and rebirth, something apparently disconnected from the first part of the record.... But more than this vague narrative conceit, it is the sounds and notes that are the true narrators of the tale here. Chilly synths evoke a frozen lake ("Under Ice"), voice collages of all sorts suggesting posession and curses and witchcraft bring a postmodern, Laurie Anderson-like flavor to the middle of the yarn ("Waking the Witch", "Watching You Without Me"), while uilleann pipes, fiddles and bouzouki trigger a celtic tornado that suddenly resets all expectations (thus creating a frantic "Jig Of Life" whose clever harmonies can send you to an exhilarated state, and this even if, just like me, you're not a fan of celtic music)... As for "Hello Earth" and its slow-motion clash between sinister Hollywood-style strings (arranged by film composer Michael Kamen) and eerie choirs interpolating a traditional Georgian lament, it just simply takes you to... space. There you can admire our fragile blue planet just the way that gigantic baby does ominously at the end of Kubrick's *2001* ("Hello, Earth... Peek-a-boo, peek-a-boo..."). After such a cosmic trip, Kate seems to wake up, as if from a feverish dream, and offers us a very short coda in the shape of a miniature track, "The Morning Fog", a very lively pop song totally at odds with everything before, led by John Williams's licks on acoutic guitar. Here it sounds as if Bush is ready to start the day and join her loved ones, her long dream becoming just a distant memory in the space of seconds... Rarely have closers sounded so *both* out of place and yet so effective, in a way... But this should come as no surprise after so many twists and turns. Kate Bush is indeed an enigma, a true sorceress whose cauldron teems with sounds and colors and ideas. She's admittedly an acquired taste for many music fans. Yet legions of them will eventually come (back) to her, again and again. And "Hounds Of Love" being her most ambitious record, *both* in its experimental leanings and its pop instincts, it is obviously *the* one place where you must start if you want to know more about the damn witch. If said witch floats instead of sinking into you--namely, if this album goes over your head on the first listen--send her back to the river, and spin the record again. At some point, its spell will work on you, at least if you're open enough to sorcery. *This* is a wizard's promise... A classic of quiet breathy englishness.

Kann ich keine 3 Sterne für geben, bloß weil Cloudbusting und Running Up That Hill drauf sind. Kate Bush ist Prototyp des im eigenen Studio vor sich hinfrickelnden Künstlers (m/w/d), dabei gelingt es ihr erfrischend, popkulturelle Standardwendungen und -arrangements außer Acht zu lassen. Die Songs sind aber einfach nicht gut. Bis auf die bereits erwähnten, die sind natürlich fantastisch. Dieses Album hätte für die Liste gereicht.

This is just so quintessentially 80s for me I cannot listen to it with an unbiased ear. Great to see an old album getting attention from a younger audience with Stranger Things. I really did enjoy Big Sky which was a tune I was not aware of. Good enough but probably won't listen again!

This is perfect timing because Hounds Of Love by Kate Bush sits at or near the top of the charts 37 years after it's original release. Thanks to the TV series, Stranger Things, which takes place in the 80's, the song, "Running Up That Hill"'s appearance on the show has somehow revived the interest in the song, album and Kate Bush. Remember Kate Bush? I do, she was very popular in the 80's, maybe more so in the UK, but I know a lot of people that are big fans of her music. Me, not so much. I never got into her music then and after re-listening to Hounds Of Love, it still doesn't do much for me. Maybe it's her vocal delivery or maybe it's just the songs are not interesting to me. I found myself wanting to listen to something else about halfway through this album, but I stuck it out. The power of nostalgia in soundtracks and songs in TV/movies is real, as the Clash's, Should I Stay...played a prominent role in the first couple seasons of Stranger Things and I'm hoping Jonathan introduces more cool music to Will...The Replacements, Husker Du, R.E.M...perhaps?

This album is firmly rooted in the sounds of its time, but is startlingly contemporary. It pulls indiscriminately from 80s pop, 70s piano ballads, and even progressive rock. Songs like ‘Waking the Witch’ sound as though bits of Pink Floyd’s The Wall were brought into a pop format. The album is a masterclass in pop production, arrangement, and experimentalism. It’s incredibly musically interesting and Kate Bush herself is woven throughout in a sort of now you see her, now you don’t fashion.

An 80s album that has surprisingly stood the test of time - whether the choice to put Bush's enamoring, demanding vocals forward in the mix or to eschew the dated synth sounds of the time, this LP still holds up today. Not every track is a winner, with the slower pieces coming closest to evoking the dreaded stereotypes of the decade, but when the tempo keeps pace the album charges forward triumphantly.

First song is a classic, this is the type of 80s I enjoy.

I was recently introduced to Running Up That Hill and was immediately drawn to that powerful 80s track. However, I think this album may have hit its high point on the opening song. Waking the Witch caught my attention, but still doesn't live up to the epic proportions of the initial track. I enjoy the vocal production throughout the album, but I find the instrumentation to be repetitive (until the Jig of Life comes out of nowhere). Overall a cool, spooky listen, but not an album I will be coming back to often. I will be listening to Running Up That Hill a bunch though. Goddamn I love Kate Bush. Just like Bjork, there are some people who transcend humanity and create art that is truly breathtaking. I can't help but feel deeply moved when listening to some of the tracks on this record. The first half of the album is an absolute bombshell of art-pop anthems, opening with one of the greatest songs ever recorded and finishing with the driving snares and crescendo strings of Cloudbusters (which is actually a fascinating story, worth looking up. Patti Smith has also written a song about Peter Reich). The second half is a little weaker in my opinion, moves more into the experimental side of things, with a very ethereal, dream-like feel to these tracks. Waking the Witch is notable for it's vocal manipulation, but not exactly a pleasant listen. Had the back half been a little stronger, I would give this album a perfect score. However I still think it is still worthy of any best-ever album list just given the absolute influential force that Kate Bush is. She has inspired countless acts and continues to shape popular music to this day. Fav Tracks: Running Up That Hill, The Big Sky, Cloudbusters

It’s Kate Bush innit. Hounds of Love is kinda funny, Running Up That Hill is a classic. Some of the songs are super fucking weird.

Prob the greatest KB album. Side one 5 solid 5 minute tracks. 4 of them were hits. Side 2 is a long suite of epic emotion and textures. Its hard to be critical except to say some of it sounds a bit 80s. (especially the overproduction drum sound and that overused fretless bass sound) Something warns me off a 5. But it is a 4.5.

5.0 + Awesomely weird. I love the way Kate Bush combines acoustic elements, like beautiful string section, with strange synthesized woodwind sounds. I also love the steady percussions that create tension without ever fully resolving. And her voice sounds amazing, clear and youthful but able to emit some serious growls. All of these songs are fully realized compositions, executed with precision. Even the album’s most outlandish “Walking the Wish” is a great listen.

I finally ordered the book so I could find out why this list is full of mediocre albums. This was another snoozer imo.

First couple of songs were instant hits. Couldn’t keep the pace up by the end. Great synth sounds.

This was different from how I expected it - lots of spoken word and interesting samples scattered throughout. It sounded more modern than I would have thought the whole album would - I mean, I know the big tunes off the album but it was still a pleasant surprise to hear something so fresh and intriguing.

Kate Bush is a phenomenon. I am in love with every second of this album, and it's near impossible to explain how I felt after listening. The atmosphere that was created is absolutely stunning and I have literally zero hesitation about giving this a 5.

Really enjoying this album. Now on the 3rd listen through. Kate's voice and the production of it has echoes of Madonna from time to time. I enjoy the various components of each song, with numerous effects. In a way it's dreamy, very calming and has a way of keeping my attention. It's a catchy album, and in the back of my head I'm a bit sad because I'll never remember to come back to it and listen again.

Only really known the singles so wasn't sure what to expect. Definitely a little odd but pleasantly surprised.

13th April 2022 Listened in the morning and finished the morning after. Chilled at guys in the day, went to buy Flynn some boxing gloves and Costco trip. Elemental, ethereal, totally unique. She is an artist in every sense of the word in the same way as Bowie.

A great album from our Kate, love the Hounds Of Love side more than the Ninth Wave Side which is a little too ethereal for my taste. But what classics are here to savour? Well the first track "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" is, in my opinion, one of her best songs, the way it weaves and rolls and the narrative is superb. Kates poetry hits a high on this Album I think. I also love "The Hounds Of Love", "The Big Sky" and the wonderfully inspirational "Cloudbusting". Her best album apart from the revolutionary debut The Kick Inside. Just love Kate for her Poetry, composition and her great choice of musical collaborators. Definite positive for the list this one. In my top 100 TBH

Listened Before? N Well, I see where Tori Amos got her sound now. Pretty much a straight rip of this sound. Here’s the thing though, I’ll always like Tori better because I grew up with her. Her topics are edgier too, which I like. That being said, this is decent. It’s a little bit repetitive in some songs but overall good. I love this version of running up that hill! Added to Library? Early Kate Bush has become a secret love of mine. She's very unique and this album has her best hit, in my opinion. Running Up That Hill is massive. The rest is not as profound, but still good 80s music.

To me, Kate Bush is a lot like soccer (or football as some of you may call it). Please allow me to explain. I have several friends, whose opinions I respect, who tell me that soccer is the best sport. It's intricate, nuanced, and beautiful to watch. I believe them, really I do, and because of that I've tried several times over the years to watch and appreciate soccer. Occasionally there are matches or moments in a match when I sort of get it, but 90% of the time I'm like eh, kinda bored to be honest. It's very similar to my experience with Kate Bush. 3 stars.

Great sound and production but I felt like the songs lacked direction. The avant garde approach to pop wasn’t that entertaining to me, and the generally slow tempo of the songs never really got me into them.

This is it. This is the album praised as the pinnacle of pop. Kate Bush, through her passionate songwriting and dreamy production, has gifted us the Hounds of Love in 1985. As far as anyone is concerned, Kate Bush is in her own league with this album. To just call it a "pop album" would be underselling how truly unique, how damn great it is. Some of it is cheesy, sure, but I think it's easily backed up by the incredible high moments of the album. I will say I find side B noticeably weaker than side A, making me lose interest. Incredible songs otherwise.

Kate Bush’s songs are love/hate for me. I really love some of them, but many I just can’t take. That doesn’t mean they’re bad if I don’t like them, just not for me. I think this is an excellent record so even though it’s not all stuff I like I appreciate what’s gone into it.

Definitely need more time with this album and perhaps an understanding of the context in which it was created. At this point, I definitely am appreciating the album but maybe am not enjoying it.

Something about a bunch of these songs sounds very modern. Really interesting and varied album, some absolute bangers on here (and some that were harder to get through). Will be listening again for sure.

An absolute all-timer. Half concept album, half bangers.

This album has songs with a ton of plays but I just think this is boring. Not particularly great singing and forgettable songs. 6/10.

She's one of a kind Kate. This is a masterpiece, not without faults, but made with passion and purpose. Got to admire someone who can sing, write, produce and play the instruments, including one the Fairlight. Unique.
