Reviews (page 14 of 14)

Maybe I just don't get it. Feels like I'm not smart enough or something. There's definitely some experimental stuff here that's at least different. Maybe historical or personal context would help. I definitely feel having the benefit of listening to her peers in comparison would benefit me and the album.

I generally don't like female vocalists and sadly, this did nothing to change my mind. I guess it was interesting in places, a little experimental, but some of the strange animal noises just sounded a bit silly. Not for me, too 80s, all big hair and electronic drums. The Irish jig halfway through the second side was a definite low point.

Good, not great.

Too much. 2/5

Whiney voice and really not my style at all. Gets weird at points

Started strong with some engaging mode. I was confused how i had never heard of Kate Bush or this album. Why is this not known as an indie rock classic? As it went on it devolved into a mess closer to the likes of Bjork or Yoko, notorious experimental banshee rock beasts. I now understand why this is not an indie classic. A+ would experience the rise and fall again. 2.25 stars.

This will be amazing art pop for people into stuff that Kate Bush excels at. I am not those people.

Nett, aber nicht sonderlich gut und auch nichts, was ich mir nochmal anhören würde. 4.1/10

Some songs are outstanding but most of them are to my taste too experimental

Certainly, without a doubt, not my thing. Even the first track I mainly enjoy for the chorus and build-up. Almost respect the album though for the wild transition in vibe after Witch track. Fav Track: Running Up the Hill Wild Track: Waking the Witch

As bizarre as I expected. Not my thing at all, but still kind of an interesting weird 80s retrospective.

Felt repetitive

Not a big fan of this. Just not my groove.

The first track became popular because of “Stranger Things”, but doesn’t offer the punch it does when coupled with the show. At times Kate’s voice is hidden behind the instruments and can be much more powerful. A Linda Ronstandt type of sound, but again, Kate needs to show off her

I don’t like to skip songs in this, but blimey, a few I had to. One or two good tunes here which achieved a lot of mainstream success, however the majority is experimental and slightly boring. Not terrible, but probably would avoid in the future. I think this one just isn’t up my street. Songs added to playlist: - Running Up That Hill

- cooles Instrumentarrangement, besonders bei Cloudbusting - generell nicht so packend - album wird trippy mit waking the witch... - kate bush konnte mich noch nie fesseln und dieses album hat dies nicht geändert

Didn’t really like this one. It started to improve on the last few tracks, though. Don’t think I’m a Kate Bush fan. 4/10 Top 3: 1. Jig Of Life 2. Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) 3. Hello Earth

Mixed feelings. There are elements that I enjoy and recognize. A chill album to play in the background while painting. I can feel the work that went into the album. Favorite/surprising song? Under the Ice and Jig of Life. Most WTF song? Waking the Witch.

Not really my style, some interesting songs though

Seichter Rock, einzig interessante Ausnahme, da bekannter der erste Song.

Pleasant but not my thing

Couple good songs. The rest fell flat for me.

interesting album, but carried by Running up that hill

Idk why just kinda lame compared to her other projects

Idk. Made my train ride worse.

Partly heard before Saved 4/12 Top track: Running Up That Hill

This is my first time intentionally listening to Kate Bush. I've always heard good things about her music. Right off the bat, I'm really not a fan of her voice. I noticed this was very experimental for the time it was released. I can see how this went on to be very influential for many pop artists that we see topping the charts today.

This was basically fine, then just gets fucking weird at the end. The end of this album drops the rating.

Trying not to let the last Kate Bush album cause too much bias here. I know "Running Up That Hill" topped Billboard recently because of Stranger Things, but it wasn't that special of a song... Waking the Witch certainly got my attention. Jig of Life was solid too. This album is better than The Dreaming. Still wasn't anything great. Points for originality as well. Maybe 2.5 for this one...

It's just a bunch of weird talking. A bunch of the song would be ok if there were only a minute long Running up the hill is a bop. And cloudbusting is pretty good Making the witch was really weird but not in a good way. Back to old Kate Bush style which stinks I walked outside and when I came back in more weird shit was happening in Jig of Life This album stunk but at least there were some actual tracks that I could call songs in the beginning so that saves it from a 1

Listened to Running Up That Hill a few times since Stranger Things but have moreso been listening to the MMJ cover at Roo which was a fuggin BOP. Solid song. Definitely liked this more than The Dreaming which was a giant piece of shit to me. Still doesn't do much for me but some songs were actually kinda pretty. I just don't think I can get down with her voice, but some of the musical aspects are pretty wild in a good way. Also, what the actual fuck is happening in Waking the Witch? Not sure if I should go down or up .5 for that song alone.

Track 1 is a classic. Track 4 can go in the bin.

Eh was ok but not something I’m planning to return for

There were some good songs on here. 2.5/5

Revolutionary for the time but tame by now. I'm glad Stranger Things resurrected her briefly though, it was really such a fitting song for the show. Definitely not something that I'd listen to regularly.

Album started really well but drops off massively

I found her vocals to be monotonous. I liked Jig of Life

Ajoittain jopa semi rasittava levy. Running Up That Hillinkään alkuperäinen versio ei ollut niin hyvä

Stranger things song, but a whole album of similar sounds. Just didn’t hit for me.

2/5 Best: Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) Worst: Waking the Witch

Lmao weomg one syrange rthibgs

Raaaari.

Running up that hill a hounds of love jsou od ní, což jsem předtím nevěděl. Nicméně oba covery jsou lepší než originál.

AJ: Weird noises. Weird lyrics. Running Up That Hill is a monster of a song. Her vox are great. Was cool to learn that this album knocked Madonna out of #1 in the UK in 1985. She’s way cooler than Madonna. Kind of discovered and helped out by David Gilmour. That’s one way to get me to listen. Synth and weirdness cut with some clean piano playing. Fucking 80’s, man. SO WEIRD. Pete Gabriel’s sister..? Lol From wiki: The second side of the album, The Ninth Wave, takes its name from Tennyson's poem, "Idylls of the King", about the legendary King Arthur's reign, and is seven interconnecting songs joined in one continuous piece of music.[66] From AJ: Craaaaaaazy

I don’t get it

Y'avait quelques bonne music et bon moment, mais c'est pas tant mon style de musique. En générale meh

Not bad not great, I haven’t taken the time to listen to too much 80s music just yet, and I don’t think Kate Bush is a great start. I’ve heard running up that hill too much, but I liked cloudbusting, watching you without me, and the big sky. Im writing this review weeks after listening so Im curious how they’d hold up rn

When I listened to the album the first few times, I didn't even play the opening track. I figured that one's great, I already know that. However, on my fourth listen I went through Running Up That Hill... and it isn't even that good. Respect to Kate for being unique and not making it 12 pop songs, but I was bored. Need I remind the authors that this is 1001 ALBUMS I need to listen to, not 1001 songs and the crap that accompanies them on their record.

Hon är duktig men tråkig.

Ehh not my vibe

Always felt like Kate Bush was too overrated, still think that. That being said, this isn’t a bad album, just nog as great imo as others make it out to be

Have never really got on with the voice. This album hasn't changed that. Sorry Kate!

Uhhh.... this was a hard one for me to rate fairly I think. I know that the album is extremely good at being... what it was - a weird, synthy, artsy 80's pop album full of hairspray and nasal-y vocals. However, it's just not for me. I get that Kate Bush's dramatic voice really adds to what she wants her music to mean, but I don't like it all. I probably won't ever listen to this album - or any songs from it - again.

Dat viel me tegen, jammer

Not my

TIL that Kate Bush is pretty friggin' weird. I respect her willingness to let her freak flag fly, but it appears her music's not really my bag.

Okay but some weird songs and very dramatic

Meh, very 80s good for background

Trage muziek met vrouwenstem, echt niet mijn ding.

2 My roommate is close friends with a couple from the UK who adore Kate Bush, who then proceeded to get my roommate into Kate Bush, and now I hear too much Kate Bush for my own damn good (Stranger Things also didn't help). So, I kind of groaned starting this album, as it sounded like everything else I've heard from her - very generic 80s pop. While I don't necessarily mind that kind of music, it doesn't feel like there's much here that I haven't heard before. Side B on this album at least went in a little bit of a different, experimental direction that I appreciated at first, but it started losing me again towards the end. To me, it feels like she wanted to explore two different genres/concepts, but didn't venture far enough into either direction to do them justice and ended up with an all-around mediocre album. Sorry Brits, but I'm another American who doesn't get it. Favorite songs: Jig of Life, Running Up That Hill

что-то мне вообще не понравилось… может это мое настроение, но манера и тембр голоса раздражали( когда-нибудь может переслушаю

09/13/22 Tik tok ruined the album. At least the vibe. Off to St. Louis!

Instantly recognized the purple cover of Kate Bush lying down with a couple of dogs. It's the one with "Running Up That Hill". It's currently a hot track because it appeared in the Netflix series, "Stranger Things". My sisters loved the show. Apparently, it was set in the '80s. "Stranger Things" also featured other '80s artists including The Clash and of course Metallica. But Kate Bush's popular single is the most Tiktok friendly. So unsurprisingly, it took storm in the internet. Personally however, I didn't really care about it. Once when my sisters and I were hanging out, we tried listening to the whole song. Halfway through, one of my sisters said it was longer than she thought. I agree, it's quite long. Only it isn't. It's 5 minutes long. And even after listening to it again now, I still don't care about it. Sure, it has a decent sound, but it's still a mildly annoying '80s synthpop song. And that's the album as a whole, boring '80s pop. This album is decent. It's well-produced and it has some great sounds. I don't really see anything interesting about Kate Bush as a singer. Her voice is shaky (idk if it's distorted or it's just her or both) and a bit generic. As a whole, it's quite boring.

Wasn't grabbed by anything but the first song

Running up that hill is a certified banger. I kept thinking this is moody Madonna. Kate Bush might look into bringing suite against Disney for the frozen soundtrack

It's fun getting this now when "Running Up That Hill" is surging up the charts again. That being said, this album goes way over my head. I zoned out a little in a few spots, and while I "appreciate" this album, I probably won't be listening again. Favorite tracks: "Running Up That Hill", "Under Ice"

I finally ordered the book so I could find out why this list is full of mediocre albums. This was another snoozer imo.

Highlights: Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) Mother Stands For Comfort And Dream of Sheep Cover: 7,5 / 10 Rating: 5,5 / 10

Thought it was only ‘bad’ until the number with the Irish monologue over the top. Then it was truly awful.

1.7 - Nothing past the first track was really worth my time.

Creative, but lacking structure. Self-indulgent, hard to track.

I get that she might have been a big deal in the 80s because of her high vocals but miss girl gave us nothing. Some songs had some really great melodies but they couldn’t shine because of her vocals. It was torture to listen to her work. I know I am not the target audience but I know how to appreciate a good album even if it isn’t my taste and this album just wasn’t it. It was boring and quite painful to listen to. I need to cleanse my ears with some good music after this.

Not bad. Starts well, then fades. Too many different musical styles imo.

Not my style

Couple of great songs, some good ones and a couple strange ones... Nice. Like to hear more of it. 2/5 for now.

This is one of those albums that I thought I would maybe like (having not heard it before) because I've been told for years how amazing she is. I just didn't get it. I didn't want to turn it off, but I don't want to play it again, either.

Yuck. I cant take listening to her shrilly voice. People sure didnt question things while sniffing pounds of cocaine. Better than the other Kate Bush album I listened to so Ill go 1.6

Not liked

Her voice is just really unpleasant to me

I hear the influence Kate Bush likely has on modern music. Not my cup of tea.

Don't Like the voice

Some great songs and a wonderful talent but I wasn't totally on board with the entire album. Waking the Witch was particularly poor. I will listen again and hope to be proven wrong.

It was a total meh for most of the time and then came the cringe with that witch song… she sings ok

It was okay.

Melodramatic,contrived bullshit

Only disliked "jig of life" and the rest were ok. Some nice tunes, but can't give it 3 stars.

I struggle to understand how this makes the list. Not good, but not bad enough to merit much discussion. 😶

Album was mediocre across the board except for Waking the Witch, which was very weird compared to everything else and the only song that really caught my attention aside from A Deal with God.

Really promising start that quickly gives way to more tedium. I just don’t get the fuss about Kate Bush. This bored me immensely

So there’s music on this I quite enjoyed but I struggle with her voice personally. I’m just glad she let Utah saints sample cloudbusting. I take back that I’d sooner listen to Dylan - that’s not true. This wasn’t anywhere near as bad as I expected so a very solid two on the basis I will still never go back

Not my style, like the vibe, but Kate's voice here sounds off to me.

This feels really dated and sort of overly intense and like it is taking itself too seriously. I'm not hearing what critics rave about in this album - it felt boring, and I was glad when it was over.

very dark at times. not my thing, but not bad.

Really forgettable woman pop music. I already forget what most of the album is like even though their were some cool, new sounds on it.

I didn’t like this album in ‘85 and am sorry to say I still don’t like it now. While I can appreciate the lyrics and song craft, the way in which it’s presented leaves me cold. Hounds of Love is a great song but can’t help thinking of Dylan’s version of All Along The Watchtower versus Hendrix’ far superior take on it. As for Hounds of Love, give me the Futureheads version any day of the week. Two tracks stood out for me. Under Ice and Waking the Witch, both of which were inventive. As for the rest, they seem to be parodies of what a bad 80’s pop song should be, particularly ‘The Big Sky’ complete with ‘diddly-die’ backing vocals.

Not really for me - reminds me too much of Old Eldon Square

Not my cup of tea. However, I must say it felt the album got better and better with each song. Some interesting elements. I could hear this music at a cult\folklore film. I was not aware of this singer.

Decent but not my favorite

OK but goes on a bit

I couldn't get through this album. Opening song was okay but that's about it.

had only ever heard the singles. Turns out theres a reason for that as the rest is pretty poor.

Love the first two tracks. Bit weird after that

Geinig voor 1 keertje

Good for Kate Bush

It was okay.

Didn’t like it as much as I thought i would

This album sounds like it looks

Don’t like pop music

Meeeh, para de me mandar musica ruim dos anos 80

Nearly 3 star but don't like her voice. Mostly just ok. Some songs I liked

Nyt ei ihan osunut mutta selvisin läpi

Dated garbage.

Forgive me for I hate it.

i ain listening to that new wave 80's stupid shit 0/5

listened to this twice and could not get into at all.

Really soft and acute pop that i dont like

Not my typical music taste however i do like her music

Generally speaking I don’t mind Kate Bush’s more popular songs. However, this album gave me a headache and it was not my cup of tea whatsoever. Don’t think i’ll be listening again.

Did not enjoy

I'll give her this, the pretentious vocal style perfectly matches the pretentious lyrics.

I like just one song, they one used in stranger things.

No thanks

Dunno. It was a bit much. Dramatic. Not my thing.

Not a fan of- at all.

I cannot stand her voice/singing...

مو ستايلي في الاغاني اغنية وحدة عجبتني

Running up that hill was good, all the other tracks were painful to listen to.

Running up that hill

fav song: Running up that hill

Would not reach for this album again, but I really enjoyed “Jig of Life”.

not for me but cool

don’t like her voice

Very experimental- didn’t like most of it though

I really hate this, it sounds like bad musical theatre to me.

Zero stars

I don't wike it

I would give it zero stars.

Really dull and boring 80s art pop with an Irish jig thrown in.

GOD AWFUL

So, I like a few Kate Bush songs. But this album was pretty terrible.

Ugh. Too 80’s synthy for me.

Don't like her voice

Don't like this one bit

My GOD, I hate Kate Bush. Running Up That Hill singlehandedly wrecked that whole season of Stranger Things for me, tbh.

Not a fan.

It was annoying.

It takes a lot for me to not be able to finish an album, but I absolutely rage quit this one during Jig of Life. So, so, so bad and cheesy and honestly annoys me that people enjoy it. I suppose if I can say anything good about this, I admire some more recent artists that claim to have taken influence from this. To see any kind of beauty and enjoyment in an album like this takes incredible talent. 1/5, now time to move on to the next 4 trash 80s albums

Fuck rating albums. Just let me listen.

No me gustó

1.5 Did not enjoy.

I just don't this record. it's the same song and lyric format throughout and it's gets experimental in the middle.

More like the Hounds of Hell What the fuck was that 1 ⭐️

Besides one song, not for me. 1/5

Almost every attempt at experimentation here misses the mark for me here, badly. Pretty much nothing in the album interested me

We all know that iconic first song in the album, but I actually don't like it that much. I don't think this is my type of music. Sorry Kate Bush.

I snored through this one.

This reminds me of Tori Amos in a way, which is odd, because I love Amos but hated this. Strangely, although I was around for the 80s, I have no memory of ever having heard of Kate Bush until recently. I feel fortunate that I went that much of my life without having to hear this.

Not for me. I like synth-pop, but this is too melancholy in an annoying kind of way.

I hated everything about this. I couldn't even listen to a few minutes of it without wanting to skip every song. Should NOT be on this list!

Raritooo Waking the witch, mid en general

After Stranger Things, if i never heard Running Up That Hill again it would still be too soon. The rest of the album didn’t fare much better. Definitely not my thing.

Musically this is a fun, artsy, new wave-esque pop record. It’s well written, well played, and well produced. My main gripe with this record is that I simply cannot stand Kate Bush’s voice. The way she enunciates words just strikes some primal part of my brain that screams at me to turn it off whenever I hear her. I really did not enjoy listening to this album as a result. The fact that I powered through it should show my respect for this project. 1*.

If it was good, It wouldn't have taken it 30+ years to become popular. Less of a sleeper hit and more of a sleeper shit. All the best.

Couldn't get past 2 songs. this is not good

get yourself a room, kate

This is the worst record ever recorded. I love 80s music. I love synth-pop. I love new wave. This is utter trash. Give Ross Gellar a pseudo-opera partner, and you’d get this.

I appreciate the experimentalism of pop Bush is known for, but it just does nothing for me. I know Running Up the Hill because of its resurgence a couple of years ago and the rest of the album does not compare. I found myself annoyed by the end and had to not have any music for a bit.

I cannot stand Kate Bush, she is one of two artists that I cannot listen to along with Beastie Boys

Not my kind of music, there's a couple songs I kinda like tho. I can see how someone could like it, but it's not my cup of tea.

Not crazy about this one. Bad voice, too pop. Rubbish bin for Bush. I didn't write this but I concur!! - Yohawn :)

Same as the previous one.

I would like to take a moment to recognise the poor guy that tried out this site but ended up getting two Kate Bush albums as his first and second album. https://1001albumsgenerator.com/shares/5fa11a5923dd065578a169f9 The chances of that happening are 0.000766%, or about 1 in 130,548. I hope one day our noble hero returns, and God willing, he gets this album as his third. That being said - did I get a different album as everyone else reviewing this or something? I fucking hated this. It was awfully boring, lame, and weird. Genuinely struggled to finish this one, it took me a couple of attempts because I just wanted to slam my head against my desk whenever another song started playing. Thanks to Stranger Things for reviving this, it should have just been left buried in the 80's like asbestos and leaded petrol - the latter I had an uncontrollable craving for drinking whilst suffering through this.

did not enjoy it and didn't finish listening

Please stop singing.

No likey

una delle voci più fastidiose a cui riesco a pensare, mi dispiace

horrible

I thought the deal with god was for her to become rich and hit the charts and afterwards to retire up a damn hill in the Foula Island in Britain. Unfortunable they used her song in Staranger things and now we have to listen to her again after successfully taking her crappy music of the airwaves. Was a 0 in the 80s still a 0 for me. Despise her voice.

Not my type of music, but thank you!

sings weird but maybe that's just me

Not for me

I forgot about this debacle from the 80’s. Running up the Hill is good - I like the new remake better though

I’m sorry but I did not like this 😭

Well, it’s got the Stranger Things song and for some reason an Irish jig near the end. Strange and should have stayed in the 80s.

I don't like Kate Bush's voice very much. Maybe British pop just isn't for me

Very dark; slow

Listened to Running Up That Hill and Hounds of Love and reached the conclusion this is decidedly not my genre.

Not sure how it can be called music, as full of discordant sounds as it is. Absolutely dreadful.

Didn’t really feel this album. Nothing really stood out for me. Favorite track is probably Running Up That Hill.

I found this album almost unlistenable. Kate Bush's vocals were extremely annoying, the musical arrangements tried to be innovative but they just end up sounding incredibly derivative, and the lyrics were terrible.

Was just a single? Wasn't a fan

Yay the same song 12 times awesome.

It was all over the place but some songs were interesting

Not really my vibe, it’s almost too synth

Not quite my tempo

Ugh no.

Never warmed to her squeaky voice, sorry.

Loved it, didn’t realize so many hits wer

Ugh this album lol

Hot garbage. Seriously, how do you listen to this?

I fucking hate running up that hill

First song killed it for me. Overplayed like nails on chalkboard

Hell no.

Wow, so not a fan of this.

TIHI. slow garbage

So Kate Bush back in the news after 30 years, due to Stranger Things. While nice for reminiscing, I liked this as much now as I did back in 85, not very much. She has a nice voice and Running up that hill is ok, but rest of album lost me. Quite a few what the hell songs. 1 to 1.5 Right after this ended on my Spotify, next 2 songs were Head over heels and How soon is now. Not sure I'd put this album in same genre as The Smiths and Tears for Fears

This album feels like an unfinished demo on almost every level. The lyrics read like works-in-progress, the vocals feel like phoned-in scratches, and all of the songs sound like the engineer forgot to unmute half of the tracks before bouncing the mix to tape. I know this was a huge hit for Kate... but I can't for the life of me understand why. The only thing I can think is that it must have been just a bit more interesting than its contemporaries. 1985 was a rough year for music...

Girly 80s pop not for me. Also stranger things

I don't understand why this album received so many accolades. Seemed very standard 80s music to me.

B0000000RING

It’s ok

The 3 last songs almost give this album an extra star, but as a whole, it's just boring as hell.

Absolutely fucking dreadful.

Дженерик музло

Didn't like it.

not for me!! so very british...didn't absorb any of the lyrics/storytelling

Not for me.

Not a big fan

not a fan

Garbage

Horrible

Ethereal almost gospel like

Very 80s. A bit like Cindy Lauper. First time I ever listen to her

The best part of this album was it was the 3rd and final Kate Bush album on this list. That means I don't have to listen to more Kate Bush.

It seems to be an excellent example of the 80s synth-pop sound. But I’m having a hard time trying to differentiate it from any other song in a similar genre that I am familiar with. I won’t go out of my way to listen to it again.

Not for me. Weird af. Space music

Stunning array of tunes
