Sometimes maybe good sometimes maybe shit

Few misses but enjoyable overall

Some okay songs, but too much synths and 80s inspiration. 3 stars

This brand of synthpop isn't really my thing. I think the opening track is pretty cool and there's a few other solid tunes like "Flutes", but most of the time it feels like a brand of 80s synthpop I feel sounds kind of cheesy. 3 stars.

One of the big issues with the 1001 list is that when it's come to revising the list, there's both a bit of a recency bias and an unwillingness to question long-standing inclusions. It means you get a fair few post-2000s albums that exist on the list for just one edition before making way for something else. Not only that but there very inclusion even a year out seems questionable. In Our Heads by Hot Chip is a perfect example of this. It is by no means a bad album. It's decent. Even fun in places. But it's by no means the best Hot Chip album, or even a particularly notable indie-electronic album. It just so happens that it was a pretty recent example of both when it came time to revise the book in 2014.

Didn't think I would like this reading the description, but was pretty good background music for an hour. Most of the songs sounded the same. 3/5

Hot Chip is always a good listen

Cool sounds but not sure if I’d go back to them a lot 3

I like hot chip. Chilled electro pop kinda. Nothing special (probs not top 1000 albums ever) but its decent and I have a soft spot for them. 3.5

eat hot chip & lie i feel like a lot of the song start terrible but turn into something great near the end. a little mixed, but i enjoyed more the most of the forgotten early 2010s pitchfork bait indie music

Not a great album but hated less than I thought

Had never heard of this group, pretty good! Solid 3.

Twas okay

I can imagine really enjoying this on a dance floor. But I couldn’t decide which song to add to my playlist because they all had the same exact vibes. I finally chose “Let Me Be Him”.

Alright, though not one of their better records on first listen

Liked it but didn’t love it. It’s a little long and overstretched. But it’d be great to throw on at a party: it’s a buoyant, feel-good listen. Lovely electronic instrumentation.

Hot Chip once caused us to crash our car. Well, "crash" is a an exaggeration, but we did hit a rock with our wheel, burst a tyre, crack an alloy and have to be towed back home. We still blame Hot Chip because we were blasting "Over and Over" in the car when it happened. That tune was so good that it caused an accident. Out of curiosity I looked up Hot Chip's listing in 1001, and was very surprised to see that this is the only album on the list. No sign of "The Warning" or "Made In the Dark". Those albums were the soundtrack to a specific time in our twenties. Songs like "Careful", "Boy from School", "Out at the Pictures", and of course "Over and Over" soundtracked house parties and road trips aplenty. I wasn't too familiar with "In Our Heads". It starts off very strongly with "Motion Sickness". Hot Chip always do great openers. "Flutes" is another really great song, reminding me of Hot Chip's heyday. But the rest of the album is... fine. It's decent enough, and there are moments that are great, but if I'm honest, it's a struggle not to glaze over and lose attention. Outside of the two songs I mentioned, there's just not anything particularly mind-blowing. Definitely not music that would cause a car crash.

Just more mediocre British music.

The vibe I get from this album is like “what if a band was made up on electronica musicians who just love to make their uni professors proud by using new instrumentation in synths and vocal effects live”. It’s good but it feels like what rock guys would like in an electronic album, which as an electronic fan I often find to be kinda lame at times.

I cant quite click with hot chip. Nice sounding album though

Pretty good album, sometimes it shows its age in some of the sound selections but not bad by any measure. Some moments are richly layered and I enjoy the the mixture of introspective and sweet melodies with the synth pop backdrop. At times I wish the production had more punch and wasn't so polite. But overall pretty good

Started off better than I expected. I liked the variation from song to song. But after the mid point, each song quickly became internally repetitive. If the songs were each about 60-90 seconds shorter, I would consider rating this four. But I started to fall asleep by the end of it due to the repetition.

good, but not great. No highlights.

Pretty good, but not anything incredible. Will not re listen, but enjoyed

Decent, well-produced synthpop album with personality. Sometimes relies a little too heavily on predictable chord progressions and familiar arpeggios, though. Also lacks a standout track like "Over And Over" or "Ready For The Floor".

Like it 3/5

Fell asleep

I can't be the only one who googled the top review for this album, found out it is some kind of meme, but still don't understand. Hopefully tomorrow I get Rumours so I can return to my comfort zone. It was interesting listening to an album that is so unabashedly pop, yet as a North American, I have never heard a single one of these songs before. They slide off my brain pleasantly but I'll never listen again.

Opening lyrics: "Remember when people thought the world was round?" Me, immediately: haha I'm in danger No but seriously, this whole thing was a pleasant surprise, on the whole. I always hate to see the "electronica" tag turn up because most of the time I can't stand that shit (sorry)—but this is one of the times it works okay for me. Still not exactly my thing, necessarily, but I didn't rush to shut the music off when the last track finished and we looped back to the start of the album. I'd listen to it again tomorrow without complaint. 👍

Overall: 6/10 Nothing overly impressive, but a decent album nonetheless. I could see myself really enjoying this if it was played at a party. Is it really that noteworthy and important of an album to include here though? I don't really think so. The 2010's was actually a pretty good decade for music and this isn't the best that the decade had to offer. Fav Song: Night and Day

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Some solid music.

Totally new band to me and I was impressed from the very start. I felt the album did start dragging a bit a few tracks in, but still this has been a pleasant discovery for me.

My Thoughts on a couple of the songs: Motion Sickness: Very catchy, but I don't remember the song after the first listen... weird. How Do You Do?: Pretty good. Chorus is really cool and nice sound selection and little shimmers of instruments every now and then. Love the little wood block on the back left, really makes you wanna dance. Dont Deny Your Heart: WTF is that vocal at the start? instantly interesting. Chord Progression in the verse/prechorus is cool. weirdly dark and then directly into that major tone. These Chains: Had me hooked after the first drum hit, can they keep it up? - Yes, they can. nice song and really vibe-y drums. The Bass line could definitely be stolen for a melodic techno song. that would be awesome. The album in and of itself as a whole is good but nothing to spectacular or anything too groundbreaking for the Electronic genre. It is very 80s inspired and tries to stay true to that theme, almost a bit too true. I liked alot of the songs and some of them were added to the playlist, but other than that it is not something I would go out of my way to buy.

I used to like Hot Chip many years ago before I really started getting more into electronic music. I haven't listened to them in a long time so I was excited to give this album a listen today. I ended up not really liking it very much! It feels like pretty generic electronic music meant for the mainstream and I really don't like the vocals. There are a few solid songs on here though and I didn't necessarily dislike it, I just didn't love it. Flutes is good.

I liked this. I didn't love it. I wonder if I need to spend more time with it to really get to that point. I don't really gravitate towards electric stuff like this, but I'm definitely not against it. Its kind of fun indie pop.

That's not my taste in music - But ok

Bang average alt rock i guess

Listened to this one a few times in the background over break and wasn't really moved by the experience. In any case, keeping an open mind, I'll give it another go... This whole synth-heavy electro-funk sound reminds me quite a bit of Glass Animals. And just as with Glass Animals I find when the music connects, it is great, but when it doesn't it feels somehow "thin." Motion Sickness is a tad boring in structure, but is a fine enough opener. Definitely a song that builds over its playtime. I can't explain why, but something about the singer's tone makes this hard to take completely seriously. Like I enjoy How Do You Do, but can't fully engage. Look At Where We Are is a very solid song. Night And Day is a fun little dancy number. My overall take is this was just okay. I enjoyed aspects in isolation, but something about the whole packaging doesn't quite work for me and I can't put a finger on why that is. And with that, I'll call this a 3.

How Do You Do and Flutes were both excellent songs, the album had a good cohesive sound too. I would put it under electronic music.

Pretty basic synthpop but full of satisfying, bouncy rhythms and melodies. Not the most unique thing in the world but still enjoyable. Night and Day, Motion Sickness, and These Chains are bangers, though. 7/10

Great album

Ok this was cool

A truly mixed bag of electronica

Couple of good tunes. Not sure if it is one of my all time faves.

Didn’t pay enough attention as I should have

Indiozinho muito legal

Very mid. 'modern' sound that already sounds dated and tired. Similar to the XX album, minus the originality and quality - 2012... These are always entertaining - Yeah this tracks. Indie pop rock with a big bass. Classic festival sound of the 2010s - First song is screaming 3-stars. Completely and utterly mediocre - Bit more club music than I was expecting. Not in a good way - Background music. Uninteresting. Didn't bother finishing the album, had a pretty good sense of what I was going to get

This isn’t for me.

Not everything is high art. This is ok British electronic pop music

I ate this hipster stuff up 2011-2014 but it feels so dated now. It feels like a dream, but I'd rather be awake.

What a band in 2012 thought the 80s sounded like

Just a bit mid for me

i actually found this pretty engaging overall. there is some filler but this is one of the better electronica albums ive heard.

I listen to electronic music and Indie but have never heard of them. Pretty good indie dance music. feel like i recognise the vocalist from some other group. Nothing that stands out and i will probably not remember any of the track but it's well produced.

Hot Chip had a moment i think in the late 2000s/early 2010s. this is very much in that electronic-focused indie sound that was huge at the time. there's a sound on How Do You Do that sounds like my morning alarm which wasn't very fun. but this sticks out to me in a world of bland indietronica because of the strength of the grooves on its best cuts. there's some tangible funk in this album. maybe a bit too long though. deserves to be one of the 1001? probably not but at one point i bet it seemed like a definitive yes

Best Song: How Do You Do? Such a great rhythm that instantly makes you want to dance. Worst Song: Look At Where We Are. This kind of quiet song, built entirely around the falsetto vocals, seemed at odds with the fun beats of the rest of the album. Overall: I really thought this was going to be great at the beginning of the album, but I felt like it fell off pretty hard in the latter half into something ordinary and forgettable. Nevertheless, it's pretty fun.

That was okay, not a stand out 3/5

Some really good parts to this but felt they were chasing snappier songs that got to the point quickly like the indie bands hot chip were always bundled in with. The songs would have benefitted a lot from being given the time to grow a bit, for a band with an album called joy of repetition they avoided every chance for a good bit of it. Not bad but feels like a wasted opportunity.

Liked what I've heard of hot chip, but not heard an album before. Probably what I was expecting. It almost sounds 80s synthy, which I don't actually like when it's from the 80s, but hot chip make it good somehow. I thought I might enjoy this more than I did, but it was good. Was getting a bit tired of it by the end though. Still think a 3.5. nigyht be back

Extremely average.

This album was actually titled in homage to Houmous & Chutney and just how catchy all 112 of their albums are. 2.6 7/11 Flutes

Vähän tämmönen keskiverto. 3/5

Some good tracks eh

Album 971 of 1089 Hot Chip - In Our Heads (2012) Rating : 3 / 5 This one is billed as electronica, which usually puts me on guard right away - but I’ll give credit where it’s due. This album leans into melody more than I expected, and that makes a big difference. Instead of the harsh or repetitive electronic pulse I often associate with the genre, this one settles into something much more mellow and peaceful. There’s a gentleness to these tracks that surprised me. The beats are smooth, the vocals are warm, and most of the songs feel more like laid-back indie pop with electronic coloring rather than full-on electronica. It all blends together into a calm, easy listen - the kind of album you can put on while working or unwinding without it ever becoming grating. I’m usually pretty tough on this genre, but Hot Chip earns an exception here. Not a life-changing album, but definitely an enjoyable one.

Nothing special but not bad

The opening track is so much better than the others that it’s not even funny. Expected to hate this album, was pleasantly surprised by the opening track. However, I was increasingly bored and annoyed as the album went on

Meh. It was fine.

Standouts Motion Sickness These Chains

It was ok. Wouldn’t listen to again

Not the worst. Dare I say the best electronic album I've encountered? I didn't feel like my soul was being surgically extracted from my human body while listening. A win.

I do enjoy Hot chop but this isn’t my favourite album of theirs

A bit too long to keep one's attention, it ain't bad, just nothing especially good

Inoffensive, background music

Hot Chip was always a B-tier indie electronic act at best. They have good songs on every album, but the whole things are usually all that interesting. This is their best album overall. It sounds pleasant and contains a few bangers, but there's always something missing with these guys' work. Key tracks: Motion Sickness Night & Day Flutes

This reminds me of a soundtrack to a straight two DVD movie

This was fine but I feel like Made in the dark (the one with Ready for the Floor) is the hot chip record on needs to hear.

Sounds like a score of other danceable AlternaPop acts from the mid-2010s (Yeasayer, !!!, Metronomy, etc.) that all wished that they were anywhere near as cool as LCD Soundsystem.

Their releases are generally pleasant listens, but never much more than that. Their lean into indie pop more than dance leaves them like a poor man's shoegaze. The beats just don't have enough oomph, it's all good but in a background music sort of way.

Surprisingly fun but also a bit same-y. 3.5?

I liked this. First time hearing.

It was okay ... It kinda all sounded the same

I didn't mind it but it wasn't very memorable. Not really sure why it's on the list. There's plenty of other electronica out there that has been more influential.

Not my genre but still decent.

What the album lacks for me is pace and standout vocals. The music itself is really quite good but without a bit more ummph and high points there it's like a less catchy, slower Daft Punk. Top Track = Motion Sickness

i knew all the songs i liked from this

As a reasonable admirer of HC (owning 4 albums) and having really enjoyed their recent 2025 best of, this one leaves me a little underwhelmed. The album somehow passed me by at the time (I may have figured that I had enough of their music and it preceded streaming suck it and see services, and didn't seem to have a hit song. The sound is light and spacious and lacks the depth that I prefer in their music either in subject / mood or synth sounds. I've given it a few listens and the best I can give is a muted 3 stars, more out of loyalty than anything (not knowing if there are any other Chip albums on here).

Started really groovy but I lost some steam by the end. Still a cool sound and I’ve got the Motion Sickness saved.

Surprised to see this one here, saw them live years ago and Look At Where We Are felt like my life’s theme song for a bit. That being said, the first song is insanely fun everyone I’ve shown it tends to love it, but there’s a reason I only show that song lol. The rest kinda drags on.

i guess i kinda sees what the ratings will be: "1/5 i hate british music and 80s sounding synthpop". dude. this has a wooping 8.0 rating on pitchfork, the ultimate "one music snob decides everything" reviewing site and a 3.4 on rate your music, the ultimate "a million music snobs decides one thing" website. all those stupid people doing this should be aware that the editors are mostly british and gen X. of course they decided to choose lame ass post 2000s albums because they are most familiar with music before then! is boomer psychology this hard to understand? so what im trying to say is that i like it although there's many better synthpop albums! 3.5/5

Great album. Don't know if I ever really listened to this one back in the day but adding it to my regular rotation

Never heard this before. Was pretty good.

Interesting album, liked the mixture of electronic and instruments, some quite good songs some songs were a bit boring. I liked the idea they were going for though

Look, I like Hot Chip. I think this is a good album. I played it in my college house many many times, especially Motion Sickness. It is not an essential album from 2012. 3.5/5

Basic indie pop, not really remarkable

Not bad. Little bit hipster for me but I still enjoyed it. 7/10

Overall, very listenable and fun. Some Daft Punk moments, some Calvin Harris moments, very reminiscent of the 2010s sound. Never quite gets going enough to be amazing, though.

An odd choice to include. I like Hot Chip, but I don’t think any of their albums are must listens essential to understanding the evolution of pop music. Fun, but not essential.

A Montreal horse tranq would have had me at 5

I wanted to like this one a lot more but it is pretty generic 2010s indie electronic. it has its moments but is mostly unremarkable.

I always ask if an album accomplishes what it set out to do? And I suppose this one does, it's pretty good British electro-pop, I can't complain. I didn't get really sick of it until the end.The last track could probably go, and it would be a little bit better, but I liked it.

I like Hot Chip - I like their tunes, I like the vocals and listening to them tends to put a spring in my step. This is a really good record, I really enjoyed listening to it, I just wouldn’t put it on a list of 1001 albums to hear before you die - if I’d died while listening to it for the first time, not getting to the end of it would be way down the list of things that would’ve bothered me.

Brains, skulls, and minds.

Eh! Good with a few standouts

You really gotta be in the mood to commit to an entire album like this. The 80s-synth pop influenced sounds are obvious and definitely give a nice nod to many of the actual bands of that time. Still…a song here and there is cool, but an hour solid of it probably notches it down for me.

I’m familiar with a handful of songs from this band, but surprisingly none showed up on the album. I liked it, but this is a small doses band for me. Enjoy hearing a song come on, but not really in the mood for a complete album of them.

The band image on Spotify makes it look like the band includes hipster Louis CK and full grown Peter Dinklage. I liked it but a full album is a lil much for my tastes. 2.75

This was fine. Pretty lackluster from what I expected. I wanted a little more The Knife or Daft Punk.

"Let Me Be Him" is fairly representative of the album: basic electronic beats, simple repetitive lyrics, easy-listening. Standout is "These Chains".

Fav: Night And Day Least Fav: These Chains

Very unique sound, and a lot of cool electronic/ synth sounds I haven't really heard before. Sounds like an older album than it is. 5/10

Not bad.

Early 2000's EDM. 3/5

Not their best album, and also, they sound a lot like tdcc

It's fine... more duds than winners, but the winners are worth the price of admission. I added the stuff I liked to a "liked songs" playlist, but probably won't revisit the album.

A very fun album to listen to, give you an amazing energy Fav song - Look At Where We Are 3/5

Pleasantly surprising

It’s fun, and sometimes a bit deeper than that, but will I be returning? Eh.

I like The Warning by Hot Chip, not love it but it's an enjoyable listen and Over & Over is a great tune. Hadn't heard anything from this, it's decent enough synthpop with some good hooks, but it doesn't really do anything special or do anything to stand out. Flutes is a great song and the highlight of the album. The other epic, Let Me Be Him, treads slightly close to stomp clap hey music for me. Fun enough listen though, potential to grow on me.

I thought this was a little 'try hard'. didn't hate it, but didn't love it either. Tough shoes to fill, considering they are being measured against some of my favourite all-time bands!

Interesting to get this a day after New Order, I could probably draw a straight line from one to the other in terms of influence. I was into Hot Chip in their pomp and I was familiar with The Warning, which I must have owned, I was almost disappointed that it wasn’t an album I knew (I’d listened to Made in the Dark before also) and perhaps surprised to learn this is the album selected for the list. On the other hand, it was good to explore a new album as I was more of a casual fan and didn’t keep up with them, even though I’ve seen them live a couple of times. A quick Google seemed to suggest a lot of people regard this their best album and the first half of the album certainly gave me a good impression. It’s hard to properly review an album from one listen, and mood plays a big part, but today I had to divide my listen into 2 and so I’m conscious that I enjoyed the first half more than the second half which could have been a symptom of that. I also found it hard to pick a favourite track, maybe it’s not that sort of album.

Solid electro pop record. Got some 80s vibes on a few tracks.

Fun pop electronica feel

I found this album a little frustrating. The production is SO cool and clean and the mix is great. A few songs really stood out - How Do You Do?, Don't Deny Your Heart, These Chains, and Let Me Be Him (my playlist choice). But unfortunately I don't love the lead singer's voice. Look At Where We Are is the song that shines the brightest spotlight on his singing, and I kept wishing there was more richness and dynamics in his delivery. Some harmonies would go a long way too. There are some great lyrics, my favorite being "A church is not for praying / It's for celebrating the light that bleeds through the pane" (play on pain as well as the panes of stained glass, like on the album cover). There's a lot to love about this album, and I have to say again how much I dig the production. I'm going with a very high 3.

The sort of music you might enjoy chilling at the pool or on the beach on holiday

Enjoyable electonica

Great opening track (successor to New Order?), the rest not quite as great

I remembered very little about Hot Chip, but found myself enjoying this - it’s catchy, full of disco infused beats that are always going to be a winner for me. I thought the album took a bit of a dive in the second half, however, where it largely became background noise, but a strong first half has some tracks I’d listen to again.

This was another album that just sort of passed me by. I listened to it (twice in fact!) but remember virtually nothing about it the next day, although I will say he has a nice voice. On one song, he sounded so much like Damon Albarn, I had to google and check there wasn't a guest appearance. Another for the "wouldn't choose to listen to it, wouldn't skip if it came on shuffle" pile. 3/5

Cool electro beats but nothing sensational. I like the first half of the album better than the second. Night and Day is my favorite because I think it's the most interesting musically but the album goes downhill for me from there.

I really enjoyed this when it started, but the synth pop vibe got a little tired as the songs went on. It was fun and boppy but it feels like there's a complexity missing in their effort to give this an 80's vibe, and there's nothing that feels very original about the music. There wasn't a lot to connect to in the lyrics either, mostly a lot of relationship musings that didn't feel that emotional to me. Overall, it was a good time and I can get down to their beat, but it lacked any real wow factor.

Better than I expected. More like New Wave music than electronica. Not sure I’ll revisit but a pleasant diversion.

Mcdonalds, charge they phone, twerk, be bisexual, eat hot chip, and lie

I was excited for this one but I just can't get into how they do vocal melody. C'est la vie.

Good, nothing really grabbed my attention but a good listen

I generally liked this, although I thought the vocals were a little uninspired. By the end of the album I was begining to tire of it. A low three.

Overall really solid. 7/10

Fun, synth-pop. Liked it felt like I'd like to check out other tracks.

As much as this is an entertaining listen - i do hope we get some slightly more experimental electro post 2010. Still enjoyable

The musical palette of Hot Chip is top drawer, so would have loved to give their album a 4. Unfortunately it is let down by weak songs and vocal delivery. 3/5

The opening track to this record is hilariously off kilter and absurd “remember people thought the world was round?” Hot Chip are not aiming for the charts with this one, they’re just vibing. In fact, there’s nothing that can really be called a single across the entire tracklist which is solid in the most part but does peter out towards the end.

Does some 2010s indie stuff I love but a lot I’m not particularly engaged with

This one is gonna grow on me. A fun sound done well.

Catchy and mild.

“Hey YouTube! It’s ya boy, & today we’re doing to Hot Chip challenge!” The clearest “3 star album” for me. I like a lot of Hot Chip remixes, a compilation album of that would be a 5. I feel like I was inclined to like them, but this album never added up to more than a solid 3.

eat hot chip and lie motion sickness- what. 5 how do you do- 4 or 5 dont deny your heart- 4 look at where we are- 4 these chains- 4 or 5 night and day- 7. lowkey fire. if they couldve been doing this the whole time, why havent they. flutes- 5 now there is nothing- 5 ends of the earth- 4 let me be him- 4 always been your love- 4 there is nothing about this album. nothing is discernible about it. its nothing

*** Too lame, too electronical. Some nice melodies though.

Decent

Pretty OK music here. I liked the retro feel of some of the songs, and the singer has a Paul McCartney quality to his voice. Best track: Now There is Nothing

Middling electronica. Not exciting nor offensive.

I've heard Over And Over and their cover of Dancing in the Dark but neither of which are on this album. It was pleasant enough but nothing really stuck in my head either.

3 reten. FAV: Look at where we are

I like it but am I going to listen to it again? doubt it.

Great dancey indie pop. Kind of reminded me of pheonix. How Do You Do? Was my favorite song.

Dance dance dance. Nice mix of songs and sounds. However I found the lyrics and style of a number of the songs were rather annoying. For example, Don't Deny Your Heart lyrics were just blah to me. And the same for Look at Where We Are.

Fun dance/electronica. Still pretty chill, enjoyable listen. Don't know how often itll be in rotation, but definitely higher than most 3s

Was interested to hear this because there are some tracks I’ve heard that I really like. I expected it to be energetic and fun, was surprised to hear quite a few kind of mid tempo songs, often quite earnest. Not what I expected, and not quite as good as I’d hoped.

Nice album

Not my bag but better than a two.

It's not groundbreaking and, like many other albums on this list, I don't understand why it should be included on a bucket list playlist but I'm not mad that I listened to it, overall.

Really liked this. Good stuff.

Fun, dancy, clean production, great moments up front. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Look At Where We Are - Flutes - Let Me Be Him

I’m not the biggest fan of synth pop, but I really enjoyed this album.

2012 as hell, cool to drink beer to in a Chicago or bk backyard in an nbc sitcom or police show

I felt the longer I listened the more pretentious the album got. Overall, it was suitable for a date night in the park people watching, but I probably won't spin it again.

Great intro song. Wide sound, great bass tones, catchy without being too annoying. Great dance tracks that aren't linear or overly repetitive. Pretty consistent throughout with how I felt about it. I liked it more than I anticipated

i've always hated this guy's voice but i gotta say the album isn't half bad

Non offensive electronic music.

tem umas musicas MUITO RUINS mas pelo menos eu gostei tanto da última música que vou dar uma estrela a mais só por ela

It's pretty fun to listen to. It didn't make me go crazy, but I liked it.

Lidt elektro pop var da fint. Fik lidt Layed back vibes ind i mellem. Specefik "White Horse" kunne høres flere steder på dette album.

There were some peaks, but, I wouldn't go as far as to describe them as "highs". This album was a decent indie 2010's album, but it didn't really do much for me.

This was pretty average. I really liked I Have Always Been Your Love but didn’t care much for the rest of it

Pretty good. It was like if Of Montreal were normal

I like Hot Chip fine, but didn't expect them on ths list. It's a good album, but a long way from timeless or essential.

I really like one of their other albums, so I’m surprised that I didn’t love this one as much

The reviews quoted in the Wikipedia article mention the ‘80s sound. Unfortunately, it’s the ‘80s dance/pop music I didn’t care for in the ‘80s. I’d give it a 2 only it’s so bland and harmless it would be overkill.

A long time ago, I was into The Faint. A friend of mine tried to introduce me to Hot Chip a bit later, but I couldn't get into it. He also tried turning me on to Orange 9mm when they were a big deal, so his credibility was somewhat lacking. Instead of listening to Hot Chip around this time, I got into a similar band called Of Montreal which is similar soft industrial dance like this just further out there. For kicks, I listened to The Faint and Of Montreal after In Our Heads. It's evident there was this remote corner of music that made its way into the light and then was shoved back into the corner darkness. I think these three bands (O9mm excluded) are good discoveries for the youngers but none have any life left for me.

It’s funny how often katek and I have inadvertently copied each other in our reviews. In the case of Hot Chip, she posted first but I had exactly the same reaction to “In Our Heads” - I thought I had heard Hot Chip before? I thought they were one of the Mostly Cheery Dancy Rock™ bands I listened to in the early 2000s, and said so in my Django Django review. But like katek, I don’t actually know any Hot Chip songs. On this album or any other. I do think it fits with Mostly Cheery Dancy Rock™, but is a little more artsy and less radio-friendly than some of their compatriots.

I waffle between 3 and 4. I would have told you I had heard Hot Chip before, but after this album and listening to their top ten most popular tracks across multiple albums, I felt like I only recognized one piece of one song. Does that mean that I changed the station when it came on? Nothing is really off-putting about Hot Chip's sound, but nothing really grabs me either.

The music is truly exciting half the time and a let down the rest. The big let down are the vocals though.

So totally inoffensive - I think I'll go check out the clearance section.....

Favorite Track: Motion Sickness

Fine I guess

Ok honestly had like one or two bangers. Not total banger, but somewhat. Otherwise, just another factory generated album

While there's very little that makes this unique from the 100s of other indie electro/synthpop albums of this era, I can't help but have a soft spot for Hot Chip since my parents listened to them a lot when I was younger, so I passively heard a lot of their music which later in life has made me feel like it's genuinely a lot better than I otherwise would have thought.

Yet another album that I wonder why it’s on here. There were a few catchy songs but nothing super exciting or groundbreaking.

3.5* 83%

Good album to have in the background, but I was expecting some of their popular tracks on it

This'll probably surprise you. I quite liked this. I'm not usually one for the electronic genres, but I found this very enjoyable. Not really any specifically outstanding, just all of a reasonably high standard. Got to be worth a 3

A take or leave band. I've seen them live, where they were entertaining enough, although the highlight of the set was 'Sabotage' by the Beastie Boys. That got the crowd going! Although I've listened to a few of their albums, just to see if they would grow in me or not, they hadn't as yet.... However I had not listened to this one, it does seem to be their best effort. It has a fair few nice cheerful melodies which put me in an instant good mood. If you don't 'feel' the music then it's not done it's job. This I did, so I'm happy to give it a 3 for starters.

Trallvänlig vaniljpop.

i like hot chip but this was too much hot chip for me.

I had to listen to this twice in a row because the first three songs sounded so similar that it took until I reached "look at where we are" for me to realise we're onto another, let alone the fourth, song. some of the songs sound like they're taking progressions from really famous songs and incorporating them in to catch your attention. which like great, its working, but if I wanted to hear those progressions i'd just listen to the original? a lot of "kooky" songs in the second half too .. is this really the best we have to show for the 2010s? enjoyed: - flutes - how do you do - look at where we are not a fan of: - night and day - now there is nothing - HATE the time sig change count of songs saved: 0/11 I probably would listen again, passively, if it was on in a cafe in the background or something. but I don't think i'd go out of my way to listen again

Very different and not unpleasant album. Some innovative music and themes. Not riveting, but quite listenable in the background

I had never heard of the artist or album before it came up. I was pleasantly surprised at this album. It's kind of like an 80s throwback in style (electro-pop) but it does sound more modern than that. I appreciate the changes in styles throughout the album as well, although some worked better than others for me. Overall I liked it and would listen again.

Ok electronic music with several good tunes but some of the vocals are just not great.

Perfectly fine. Nothing super exciting, never wanted to turn it off.

Not bad!

Overall not my sorta of music, The beats are quiet tame but quirky which I like.

Never heard of this one before, but it was a good listen. I’d do it again.

I love some Indietronica (LCD Soundsystem is one of my all time favorite bands), but I just wish the songs here were a little better. If the songwriting was a step up I feel like I could really love this album, however, as it I find this one a little boring, which sucks because I am always looking for more party music. It's not a bad album, I just expected a little more. High 3.

I like hot chip in small doses. I respect what they do. I dont think this is their best album. And whole album is a lot. But not bad at all

tended to blend into the background

Into the pregame playlist you go

Hot Chip is one of those groups I am always really happy to listen to but just never cracked my regular rotation. I probably need to change that. They’ve got a familiar sound but with some unique traits that make it immediately identifiable as Hot Chip. This album has a couple lulls in it but that’s fine. 3 stars.

Great Album, first time listening to it, a very enjoyable surprise. 3.9

Delightfully funky disco beats. Pleasant surprise

"Look At Where We Are" sounds partly like a common electronic sample nowadays. The whole album is very "poppy" with some electronic parts. Interesting.

I love Hot Chip, but somehow they seem to have a whole album that has completely passed me by. Genuinely no idea how that’s happened as I listen to all their other albums quite a bit. Weird. Anyway, it’s Hot Chip. They’re great, and it’s great to have a “new” album of theirs to listen to. That being said, this is most definitely their weakest album. It’s still good, but for this to be the only Hot Chip album on the list is a baffling decision. I really do wonder what goes into decided the albums that make the cut. If you enjoyed this, their Tiny Desk Concert is worth a watch. Wonderfully stripped back versions of their songs including Look At Where We Are which is probably my standout from this album.

Well, the record happened but I remember nothing about it.

-I recently heard about this band for the first time so of course it was only a matter of time before I saw them on here ig -it was interesting, not at all what I was expecting though I’m still not sure what that was… I like the attempt at reviving that 80s synth pop sound, it was unique and done quite well -there are a few duds on here I guess but whatev it was a fun album -Favorites are How Do You Do? and Night And Day

my chips r hot

Good, bit bland

A vast majority of this list so far has been vapid, annoying, and generally boring 80’s and 90’s britpop, it seems here that we’re finally getting reprieve with.. 2010’s britpop? Okay admittedly I kinda enjoyed this record. There’s some really funky synthy basslines throughout that certainly make you want to move. I am not a massive fan of the lead vocalists voice, but it’s nowhere near the worst vocals I’ve heard so far. This is a fun, if not a little forgettable, synth-pop record. It feels like it would be at home on the soundtrack of a lighthearted mid 2010’s indie film. 3*, not bad.

I actually own (and enjoyed listening to) an earlier Hot Chip album ("The Warning"), so it's nice to get a different listen to this band. I'll admit that I must have last listened to "The Warning" many years ago, as this album doesn't sound all that familiar to what I vaguely recall as their sound; in fact, much of this album sounds much more like some 80s New Wave knockoff than anything else, which is a bit disappointing. And those videos! So painful, especially the horribly dated VR-based "Don't deny your heart". That said, I thought "Look at where we are", and the accompanying video, was probably the best track on the album (and the "Night & day" video wasn't too bad either). I also enjoyed "Flutes" and "Ends of the Earth".

I enjoyed this more than most synth pop but was surprised it wasn't from the 90s.

Electronic, synth-experimental, typically with driving drums, nasal/thin voice OR almost tuned mellow vocals. These Chains was a notable. 3.5/5

Maybe I’m just not digging on the vocals, but this feels… soulless? I’ve heard them compared to LCD Soundsystem, daft punk, and others I really like, but this does nothing for me. Just bland.

Konnte man sich gut anhören aber ob das jetzt unter DEN 1001 Alben sein musste. Dont know

Dejlig plade, har altid godt kunnet lide hvor meget Hot Chip laver musik der lyder virkelig cool og samtidig committer 100% til hvor store nørder de er.

I was expecting to not like this at all but I was pleasantly surprised. This is a enjoyable listen, a 'electronic music for people who don't like electronic music' sorta thing. I liked the dynamics and layers of sounds, I can totally see how people would be into this. Not sure if I'll ever revisit any of these songs but it's a solid album for sure.

6.5/10

First time listening. It's a bit ... meh. Did it really take so many people playing real instruments to make it sound like a bloke with a DAW and a bunch of VSTs?

Not bad

This album came out in 2012 but the sound is very consciously rooted in 80’s style electronica, with influences including the Pet Shop Boys (but not as orchestral) and Daft Punk (but not as French). I’m in two minds (or heads) about this - it’s a pleasant enough listen but ultimately it’s a little bit insubstantial. I get the feeling it wants to be counted as a dance album but there’s nothing on here that has quite enough oomph to get me out on the dance floor.

There is a couple of tunes that are really enjoyable and entertaining (it starts pretty well actually), but 2/3 of the album is boring. And I'm convinced it would have been better as an instrumental album, the voice tends to spoil titles that start well. Not too bad, but there are probably better stuff in synthwave to dig into though. It's a 2.5 but I'm in a good mood.

Pidän rehellisestä housesta väleissä, vähän discoakin on - monia juttuka, joita kuulee nyt isoilta popartisteilta. Popia tämäkin, keväistä ja valkoista. Mutta Pet shop boys on hauskempi.

Näillä tyylittelijöillä on ollut inspiraatio päällä: lähes kaikki biisit tyydyttävät jollain tasolla. Toisaalta mikään niistä ei tyydytä totaalisesti, eikä bändin keskitempoisen napakka estetiikka pure minuun. Toimivia melodioita nyt kuitenkin.

Kinda liked this. Prolly won't listen again, but liked what I heard.

Compared to other albums from this genre, I would consider this somewhere between “tolerable“ and “almost likable.“

Like sticky, sweet candy: the memory of it does not last, and if you have too much (55 minutes!) you regret having any.

It's pretty OK.

Jaime 2, Nuria 4

Rlly luv hot chip, not my fav album of there’s but still some amaze tracks on there! Favs: How do you do? Don’t deny your heart Look at where we are Flutes - wow!!!

Better than average synth pop, but nothing that is groundbreaking. Doesn't need to be on this list.

This was fine indie pop but I don't think I need to hear this again. Sounds like they were influenced by the Pet Shop Boys.

Hot Chip is a British band that made synthesizer based, danceable pop. The band's distinct sound comes from their vocalists, Alexis Taylor and Joe Goddard. The combination of, and contrast between their voices allows the band to create a range of sounds. In Our Heads is their fifth studio album. These are catchy, upbeat pop songs, with danceable bass and rhythm tracks - even the ballads. For an 2012 album, these songs have a retro-80s feel to them.

Pleasant enough electro-pop, but nothing outstanding. Favorite: These Chains, Flutes

Enjoyed this a good deal, some songs go on for a bit longer than I’d like but it’s otherwise an enjoyable listen.

Bit of a blast from the past (as I don’t think Hot Chip have once crossed my mind in a decade) and bit of a mixed bag for me but overall pretty banging and a good time! Really dug the first half of the album, especially Motion Sickness slaps. I think that half is more kind of electro and dancey which is fun, compared to the latter tracks which I didn’t really enjoy such as Now There is Nothing and Always Been Your Love. Anyway, chill vibes. (3.5 stars)

Pretty solid!

Nothing wrong with this. Couple of great tracks. The vocals were a little generic, though, which detracts from it. Really enjoyed the opening track.

Hot Chip - In Our Heads Nice selection of songs that have that 80's sound, but at the same time sound futuristic. This album is really fun to listen to, having some inspiration from Tears For Fears, but also having their own sound, which is cool. Overall, this is good! 1.- Motion Sickness = 9/10 2.- How Do You Do? = 8/10 3.- Don't Deny Your Heart = 7/10 4.- Look At Where We Are = 7/10 5.- These Chains = 8/10 6.- Night And Day = 8/10 7.- Flutes = 8/10 8.- Now There Is Nothing = 7/10 9.- Ends Of The Earth = 7/10 10.- Let Me Be Him = 9/10 11.- Always Been Your Love = 9/10 FINAL SCORE: 7.9/10

They nearly made synth pop enjoyable, if only they could ditch the vocals.

Yes!!!

Not bad. I didn't like the first few songs, but it got better as it went along. More like their earlier stuff.

I don’t care for electronic music, but some of this was ok

A little long but mostly very good. If you like dance music, there’s a lot to love here

An album like fast-food: enjoyable at times, at others hard to stomach. There is nothing making me paticularly sick here, nor is there anything really good for my ears. Or brain. 3/5

Not bad!

Enjoyable background music. Nothing to take serious.

I dunno, this is without a doubt a good album. I'm just not feeling how it could be considered leagues above others of its genre. The second half is sorta weak as well. I dig this band, there is good stuff going on. But it doesn't feel like a breakthrough or a must listen.

enjoyed it more than I thought I would

Eingängliche elektronische Musik. Easy listening. 3/5

Very of its era. Hit and miss for me.

This was happy, cheerful. Good for them

On par with the Beatles

Havnt finished it, was intrigued, g9t bored by These Chains, but night and day has kinda turned me around, and with flutes right after I feel ok about this album, I'm hoping it finishes strong

W teorii przyjemne, radosne, energiczne. MGMT) i to w lepszej wersji. 5/10

Honestly i like some hot chip but i do not think this is there best album at all

Despite this being electronic music. I didn't hate it like I usually do. Haha but I didn't really care for it either.

Bouncy synthesizer, a couple of trippy slow songs. Okay for both housework and just sitting there jams.

Yeah, this very much has an early 2010’s hipster vibe to it, but it’s pretty decent. It has a couple of songs with a decent groove to them.

Definitely better than your average synth-pop album, but very inconsistent from song to song. When a song leans more into the "synth," it's much better than the songs that are more "pop." Overall a solid listen. Top tracks: Motion Sickness, Look At Where We Are, Night And Day

It's alright

Δίσκος που δεν είχα ξανά ακούσει, Ένα δύο κομμάτια μου έκαναν εντύπωση αλλά θέλει και άλλα ακούσματα

A tale of two halves. Some great dance tracks in the first half (Motion Sickness, How Do You Do?, Don't Deny Your Heart & Night And Day), followed by some pretty dull ballads.

Ok electronic pop album. Some of it was repetitive, but it was interesting enough to get through. 3/5

Laid back and catchy electro album. Standout songs: How do you do Flutes

It’s alright. Wouldn’t turn it off on the radio but wouldn’t go out if my way to listen again. Absolutely does not need to be an hour long.

Good style but not very interesting. Couple of good tracks but overall interesting.

Once again, the typical sound of pop 1980's electronic music.

This Outfit never got closer to 80‘s tacky synth pop. Well built tracks that have all a massive potential for a maxi- or Remix Version.

It’s alright. The main thing holding back the worst songs are the vocals. Favorite song: Flute Least Favorite Song: Always Been Your Love

Unremarkable 6/10 Fav tracks - flutes Least Fav - eghhhhhhh

An enjoyable album with some fun arrangements and very competent production. Apart from that I don’t see myself seeking this out again voluntarily. Not exactly sure why this 2012 electronic album is in this book instead of something by Tame Impala? Highlights: How Do You Do?, Night And Day, Flutes

I've seen the name around, so interesting to hear what they sound like. But it didn't make a big impression on me.

This was decent and has some potential, there were a few songs that I really liked. Definitely unique

Frigid fries

It was an okay album. I could hear the Depeche Mode/pet shop boys influence on them and while it was tame, it was an interesting listen.

Opening track takes a moment to get some traction and I was going to just throw in the towel expecting just another run of the mill electronic act that plagues this list (seriously, how many copy/paste English electronic bands are on here?!?), and then those crispy-af drums came in and caught my attention. But was that it? No! The song kept going and drawing me in more and more. Truly a killer song and album opener. Sadly, the momentum doesn't carry and the next few tracks were bland enough that I drifted off and missed them until slipping back in with "Look At Where We Are", which is a beautiful yet somber tune. The album continues to be a bit of an up and down with some great songs, some less so. Some take a little too long to get off the ground, some punch you right in the face. It's not a bad record by any stretch, just not one I'll be coming back to as a full album, but definitely added a few songs to playlists.

2.7 2x catch up 12/30/24

This was pretty decent. 3.5/5

this is awful fun!! Indie sleaze revival in full swing. The Dare you're nothing. I don't really like the slower stuff on this album though im sorry.... womp womp
