Reviews (page 3 of 7)
Fairly good,
I love Hot Chip, even if this wasn’t one of their most bangin albums.
Excellent 2010s hipster pop. Nothing that stands out quite like some of their earlier singles, but every song is fun - i.e. good background music for a party.
Favorite tracks: Motion Sickness, Don't Deny Your Heart, Now There Is Nothing, Let Me Be Him, Always Been Your Love Very cool vibes. I like Hot Chip but am only really familiar with the album before this, One Night Stand. Some songs on this album I really liked, others didn't do a ton for me. But I think this will be great spring-to-summer music, so I'll go with 4 stars!
A very pleasant discovery! In my mind, if Michael Jackson were alive, he would be doing something like this. 4 stars.
Surprised by how much I liked this! Lots of nice sounds, melodies, and harmonies. Each song is distinct, while the album still feels coherent. Good stuff!
4+ The first half is 5/5 then it gets monotonous
A very interesting listen that I went back and forth on. On one hand I LOVE the electronic elements, and songs like These Chains, Night and Day (my god that's a banger) and Flutes are crazy good. On the other hand I really didn't like the indie elements at all, including Look at Where We Are and Let Me Be Him which are songs I really hated. All other songs were fairly good or just ok. The album structure was weird, in that the first half was ok, it peaked in the middle, then ended flat. All around I think Night and Day is what pushed this from a 3.4 to a 3.5, awesome song. 3.5/5 -> 4/5
Was moving so much listening to this that I think I got Motion Sickness. Now Look At Where We Are
норм, вайбово. пару песен добавил в любимые, напомнило мгмт, м83 и муджуса
I never thought that I would like a dance album. They feel so niche, like they need to be play in clubs or parties to have any entertainment value. But this one surprised me. It sounds at times like a fusion between 2010’s dance and 80’s synth pop and the result was amazing. I found myself getting into the groove for most of these songs. I don’t know how to explain it, but I felt weirdly nostalgic listening to this. Maybe it’s because it came from the early 2010’s and it takes me back to my high school days. It’s got that vibe. It does have some dance jank, where it relays on random noises to make up the beat. But it’s at a minimum. This was a great surprise. Favorite track: Ends of the Earth Other hits: Flutes, These Chains, Don’t Deny Your Heart, Let Me Be Him
Funky electronic album. Singing seems like it wouldn't go well with it, but it makes it work. Really liked this one. Fav Songs: Motion Sickness, Let Me Be Him, Always Been Your Love
Amazing album. I loved it. Excellent mix of electronic and pop-rock.
Finally something from a completely different barrel. Alternative disco/dance, or just an original attempt to redefine the classic genre in 2010s. Few songs are honestly amazing, and will sit on my "party mix" forever. For example "Motion Sickness" and "Flutes" have a tremendous quality and bring a breath of fresh air into pop/dance. On the other hand, when the quality isn't there, the track become slightly tiring, not providing anything interesting, and slowly but surely becoming mundane. This opinion comes after just one hearing of the album, and I have a feeling that there is a possibility of falling in love with the whole record. For now it's just 4 stars, but a really good core for future enjoyment.
This reminds me a lot of new-era Glass Animals. Honestly, I quite enjoyed this one. Quite a fruity little poppy album, with overwhelming British indie tones. This album really picks up at the end. My only real gripes with this album is the singing is definitely lacklustre and out of tone at some points, but the groovy electronic and synths really do it for me. Highlight of the album is absolutely Night and Day.
Pretty chill
Most of that was fun. My favourite was Now There Is Nothing. Night And Day sounded familiar.
Fun, lively, colorful, energetic. I don’t know, for years I’ve never been totally sold on these guys, even though it’s right in my wheelhouse. Again, great example, totally enjoyable, yet something’s missing for me. Some folks seem to find a perfect balance between dance and pop, but this still feels like it sacrifices on both ends.
This was a new band to me and I really enjoyed listening to the whole album. Catchy hooks, complex vocals. I would definitely add it to my library.
Wow, this was pretty good. I really dig the combination of electronic and acoustic instruments, and several of the songs were very catchy. Will definitely be checking out other stuff from this artist.
This is pretty chill.
New to me. This is EXCELLENT EDM music. Thanks.
Hot Chip proving they are as ready as ever for the floor.
Nice vibe
Хорошо. Милая электроника с несвойственной ей спокойностью. Мозаика мелодий. Flutes выделяется на фоне выделенного.
Hot Chip are such a slept on band. They’re consistently weird and fun but also catchy and accessible. Personally, I’d put One Life Stand or Made in the Dark well ahead of this one but it’s still great and I’m happy to see them recognized at all.
Inventif et complexe, électro incarné, vivant
An album that makes you tap your feet and smile. Good stuff!
nice surprise
Enjoyed that. Part of that brief spell of bands in the early 10s that sounded so fresh and vintage at the same time - alt J, XX etc. something that I don't think had much longevity but was pleasant when it was out. Might have a few of these in my rotation playlists.
A couple songs and this is the type of electronica I like. It's poppy with some artistic flair and leans into other genres. Was dancing hard to track 3 ("Don't Deny Your Heart")
I love HC!
Lovely record.
Have to say I didn’t finish the whole album but liked “Look at Where We Are” !!
One reason I love synthpop so much is because of its naturally playful and quirky vibe, and that’s exactly what draws me to Hot Chip. This album in particular has such a fun, uplifting tone with lighthearted lyrics. It radiates a sunny, bright feel from start to finish, making it an album that always puts me in a good mood.
Bangers at the front, got less interesting towards the last few tracks. Still there’s some tasty stuff here, and I think Hot Chip are generally kind of underrated. Deserves another listen.
Good, dancy type, EDM. Nice change of pace
Amazing! Creative instrumentation and effects, vocals reminiscent of Dirty Projects. Catchy songwriting, good use of synths. Each song has a different vibe. I will definitely give this album another spin soon.
Easy to listen to, nothing too deep.
Fun album. I like the mix of chill and and dance vibes. Just enough creativity to feel more elevated than your standard pop mix.
Solid, beat-driven all the way through. Just no real stand outs.
Aight.
what happens when an indie group makes a 80s-inspired dance album? the influence from years past is clear with analog synthesizers, drum machines, and a smooth mysterious sound that plenty of artists had then. just like with other indie albums i've heard in this collection, this album too has that mellow indie sound, never too loud, often meta, and sometimes awkward. i can never get into this sound fully, but it's a decently nice album if you wanna listen to synthpop with a modern twist.
How does this perfectly 80's post-punk brit sound come from 2012? It is a wonderful Pet Shop Boys-esque sound that makes you want to twirl and drink Zima.
This one was kind of fun. Sounds very 2012 hipster, but I guess I don't hate that.
I have never heard any of this music before today. It's very nice and I really enjoy the chill electronic vibe. They use some really interesting sounds that I don't think I've heard before, excellent bass/drum sounds. This is an album that I will definitely be listening to again, I'm really glad I heard it.
It was refreshing to listen to something I'm more familiar with. I don't know a lot of Hot Chip, but I've always enjoyed what I knew in Flutes, Haurache Lights, and Over and Over. This album has some really great songs. My favorites are a Beatles-esque Now There is Nothing and also Look at Where We Are. Flutes is also great. Now this album is longer than it needs to be, and there is a fair amount of mid content on it, but great listen.
I don't find myself listening to electronic music, and maybe I would have a better appreciation if I noticed that not all the songs sound the same. Some of these just sounded like 80s rock. I am thinking of 'Don't Deny Your Heart.' And then there were dirty little industrial electro songs like 'Night and Day.' Definitely, they are going into my rotation. My favorites are 'Look at Where We Are' and 'Let Me Be Him.' Actually, 'Look at Where We Are' is one of the only giveaways to me that the album was released in the 21st century because it sounds like something that could still be on the radio. The rest sounds very retro to my ears. I always appreciate when I can be fooled in that way.
So when this album first started, I thought to myself "oh god, here we go with another borderline unlistenable, 'artsy' and 'experimental' electronic album." But I was pleasantly surprised and proven wrong. I liked a lot of this album and didn't mind the length of some of the songs, which can be a killer for a lot of electronic music. Overall, a good listen and wouldn't be mad if I had to listen to it again.
I really liked this at first, though it doesn't feel like anything special. The album felt a little long and I got bored towards the end. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5
who news the new order
My first experience with Hot Chip was in college when a friend showed me a music video of Cancer Jesus Godzilla blasting a boy band and reanimating them, only to be defeated by a floating head with laser eyes. I don't remember if the song was any good. So my expectations were low. But I actually really grooved with this album. I don't love it, but the music is good, and the singing is surprisingly not bad, repetitive, over processed, or shallow, which is rare for the genre, at least what I've heard.
This is a really consistent and groovy album, very danceable and catchy and 80s synth influenced I think it doesn't quite have the bangers that Hot Chip's previous 2 albums have but there's a lot to like here, especially the centre point (Flutes)
Actually surprised I didn't know this British band! It's right along my alley! Cool find and great record.
Surprising
Pretty good, for 1984
There is one specific song on this album that has triggered a deeply buried memory of a different song I used to listen to a bunch in college. I have literally spent hours of my time attempting to find that other song. I am uncertain whether this helps or hurts my rating of In Our Heads.
I liked this more than I expected. The first half especially was catchy. Motion sickness is good. Look at where we are is good, flutes is good, Now there is nothing all goo. This reminds me of still woozy who I enjoy. Overall pretty cool very much chill vibes.
I saw Hot Chip the year this album was released. I was galivanting around with someone who was obsessed. The overall feel of the album is great, there are shifts between moods, bpms, and instruments. It's light and fun, a real easy listen. I prefer the sappy love songs to the disco-y ones.
Very interesting album, reminded me of Dirty South but then also like a 60’s British folk it was fascinating. A worthy British inclusion, and it’s interesting to see clear differences in electronic construction and execution by someone from UK vs US. Very cool culturally.
Nice! I've got this album on vinyl, through a club I was once in. It's really cool, Hot Chip is a nice electronic artist/group (not sure which), some excellent grooves and sounds on this one. I was just complaining about the uniformity of electronic/dance type albums on this list, but this one is actually refreshing. Great album! Favorite tracks: Look at Where We Are, Flutes, Now There is Nothing, Ends of the Earth. Album art: Really like the colorful collage style. Absolutely my kind of cover. 4/5
I was surprised by this one really liked it!
Hell yeah! Let’s fuckin dance lads. I had to describe these guys in the group chat as a band you hear when you’re shopping at the Gap in 2012. It’s not particularly groundbreaking as far as dance music goes but it’s still fun and upbeat so it’s hard to be mad at it. I would even argue this is Regular Person music since it’s very inoffensive, and not everyone is a huge music fanatic so it works in a broader sense. It’s honestly not a bad record, with some cool tunes and sounds. Lyrically it’s innocuous and fun. Not sure why it’s on this list though, it’s decent but nothing I’d seek out on my own.
Pretty enjoyable for my first listen. Great working music!
Nice music…8/10
I missed a lot from the mid aughts to the mid teens, being distracted by parenting. This appears to have been a casualty. Strong opening groove, super fun vibe all the way through. Too bad the kids would have liked this back then for dancey-dance time!
So much nostalgia! Early years of festivals etc. I remember Hot Chip was one of the first things we saw at my first Bestival and it being so exciting in that big top tent. Reminds me a lot of Philippa listening to HC, as she was a big fan. In all honesty on this listen I wasn't into it all. But for nostalgia value and for a bang with it's own niche I'll rate higher
Light, fun album. I think this is one I'll listen to again a bit. I like Hot Chip, not least because it gives me hope that as a very old man I can still make it in pop.
Genuinely surprised to see Hot Chip on this list. I've been a casual fan of theirs for a while, and never listened to a whole album before. I did enjoy almost every track. Night and Day and Now There Was Nothing leave a little to be desired, but all the others were great. I'll likely explore more of their discography.
Surprised this is on here but actually my first and favorite hot chip record! Night and day bangs. Flutes and ends of the earth are super cool. How do you do and motion sickness AND don’t deny your heart are all awesome. Great vocals. Cool blends of electronics with other organic instruments. Great record.
good dance record, made me boo my head to a few, fun enjoyable tracks
I freaking love modern indie pop and their artsy looping beats. Still, I couldn't deny that this area of music suffers from sounding oversanitized. Creating a rather cerebral sensation of being in a museum of "modern art" with all its white walls and stuff. I appreciate it, but I'll surely enjoy more if it feels like a paint gun festival or a laser disco rave vibe instead. I want the colors that it shows on its cover.
Interesting they chose to put this one on the list - it’s not got as many instantly recognisable singles but is a really nice listen
Enjoyed the album and the different blends of music.
Fun electronic pop.
I didn't know about this Hot Chip album and it was a nice surprise. The songs ran a little too long but it was decent
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: How do you do?, Look at where we are, These chains, Night and day
None of their smash hits on it but still really good.
Some catchy new wave type stuff, consistent throughout although it lacked any sort of a standout hit
Really enjoyed this. Forgot how many good tracks were on there.
4/5
Romantically inclined dance pop with an edge
Good background music
I only wish this album was more consistent like "These chains" (5/5) or " Ends of the earth" (4/5) The rest is just ok 4/5
Always liked Hot Chip and while this has been somewhere in my collection for years, I hadn't given it a fair crack for quite a while but it's a brilliant album, both eclectic and focused. Nice and chilled but has its boppy moments too, although I think it fades a bit in the second half which is keeping me from thinking too hard about a 5 star. No qualms on giving this a 4 though. Great stuff.
I've always struggled to get into Hot Chip. This hasn't changed much, but i did really enjoy this as a listen.
Very poppy, but I thought it was good pop. I enjoyed my second listen and thought maybe I might even choose to listen to this. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Let Me Be Him, Flutes Rating: 4
Eat hot chip and lie
i mean cool sound i like it but like what is this mf sayiN
Fun stuff.
Me gustó mucho el disco y la banda!
I say like bubbles, decent!
This is surprisingly better than expected. Would not be a bad album for a long road trip.
I recently discovered these guys too! Good stuff
Skemmtilegt popp, sem er samt ekki uppskriftarpopp.
I think their later stuff is more appealing to me, but I did enjoy some tracks on this one.
Made in the Dark but I can see now that that was a mistake. This is probably my favorite of their albums on only one listen.
Upbeat dance music that is held grounded by very subdued, sometimes monotone vocals. Motion Sickness is great and Flutes is the crown jewel here. Look at Where We Are is a somewhat poignant ballad. Despite borrowing house and disco style synths and rhythms, the songs often still have an almost acoustic feel (that super dry snare a big reason). It's best when it's trying to be dance music without being 'club' music (e.g., Night and Day). Don't Deny Your Heart has all the ingredients of an 80's soundtrack song but somehow comes off not cheesy.
Was skeptical at first, but it really grew on me. At one point - night and day, and flutes - i started dancing around the room. Funky and groovy.
great!
Pretty good would listen again. The best version of a sound that was everywhere in the 00's
2012 Genre: Synth-pop, alternative dance, indietronica, electro-funk, nu-disco Standouts: Motion Sickness, How Do You Do?, Flutes, Now There is Nothing, Always Been Your Love 4/5
Disclaimer: this review may be biased bc I literally hated the last couple we got lol Review: I manifested a pop album and we got a [electro] pop album!!!! YAS KWEEN! I seriously enjoyed this album. It was funky, fresh, unique, and FUN. First 75% was a lil more enjoyable for me than the last couple songs. Flutes is DEF my favorite from the bunch (knew it beforehand tho; what can I say, I have great taste). Wish we were scoring between 1-10 so I could give this an 8.5. I guess I’ll just have to do a 4 here. ok bye!!
Ok when this album came up, I was like who is choosing these albums, they’re so random! But I actually really enjoyed hot chip and all their weirdness. It’s too much to listen to a full album back to back, but I think I’d enjoy a few songs from the album at random. I googled them- British band which makes sense, and I loved that they are the self proclaimed “thinking person's party band.” Am I a hot chip fan now?
Reminds me a bit of sparks which is great. ***emotional***
Forcément bien puisque sorti après l'an 2000.
interesting sound. Had some 80's features to the music. I enjoyed it overall.
Pretty neat; the nasally lead voice is the only unpleasant part of the album.
Original, fresh and with some very cool theme!
Lots of fun. Saw them live at Sasquatch, not knowing them, and it was an insanely fun show. Later saw them perform a DJ set in Brooklyn. They gave Kelly and I free beer. That gets a bonus point from me
Like updated New Order, and great for it.
Really liked this, will be listening to them more
Relaxed
Would not have picked this specific Hot Chip album but it's pretty solid
The way I feel about you darling -bwop-bwop-bwop- in the middle of the day.
hit chop
Nice album.
-1st note unrelated to the music... streaming has a stained-glass version of the cover art that I like quite a bit more - is this what they mean by "eat hot chip and lie" - In Our Heads continue the trend of modern albums on this list that sound like they're representing older decades. (Queen of Denmark, Kiwanuka, hell even Chemtrails Over the Country Club) Here's the thing my lil chili babies, I like those decades a *lot*, so I shouldn't be complaining at all. -This sort-of renaissance of New Order & the Pet Shop Boys hits the spot, because it's derivative in a good way. The nostalgic synth bass of "Night and Day" is appropriated in a very funky and strange melody that isn't easily put in a box (cuz Boxing Day) - "These Chains" has a shuffl-y, UK garage sound, but enhanced with dreamy effects and, temporarily, a martial snare beat. None of these elements sound out of place to me - if there's any reason why this isn't a 5 star classic, maybe it's that I underrate dance albums. Or that crave a more demented energy right now ( i.e. "Night and Day") over more polished tracks on display here ("Look at Where We Are", "Let Me Be Him") December 26, 2023 📦 HL: "Night and Day", "Flutes", "Always Been Your Love", "Motion Sickness", "Don't Deny Your Heart"
A real surprise. Caught out attention from the get-go and maintained it. Will be listening to this again.
A few seconds in, I can tell I'm going to enjoy this. I enjoy their more upbeat tracks, not a fan of the slower tracks like Look at Where We Are. I was really hyped for this, thinking it would be at least 4*, but it didn't hold strong. 3*. About half to a third of songs I like. Enjoyed: Ends of the earth, let me be him, motion sickness, don't deny your heart I like How do you do, but the religious lyrics irk me. Ok, on second listen I'm more inclined to give this 4*. There's a lot of really cool moments in this album. Night and day has a cool funky start.
Well, I think this might be the biggest surprise out of any album I've listened to so far. First of all, I was surprised to even get a relatively modern album. Sometimes it feels like this list is just 90s and earlier, so getting something from 2012 felt pretty nice (even if that was 11 years ago). What really surprised me with In Our Heads by Hot Chip is just how much I liked this album. I was really worried that I wouldn't be a fan of this album. I don't know why, but I just wasn't that excited. After listening to the album? This is pretty great! I had to make sure that I was in the right mentality for this album, as I had heard that it wasn't anything super mindblowing or complex. I just had to expect a pretty fun album with decent music. With that in mind, this album managed to exceed my expectations. The singing and writing are admittedly not the most special, but they're not actively bad either. The album is also a bit long. The sound of the album is where my praise really comes in. My favorite thing about this album is just how different each song is. They're all clearly the same genre, but each song stands out from each other in a way that a lot of albums just don't. This is a very good album that serves as a nice fun listen for someone looking for some good electronic music. Strong 4/5.
Rimelig nice, elektronisk indie pop, lidt op og ned
I liked the Hot Chip's The Warning a lot but hadn't listened to this one. Really great first half, pretty good second half. Interesting synthy sounds and production throughout. Will be adding to the rotation. 4 - Will definitely listen again
Pretty fun and not like other stuff in this list
I don't think this is as good as One Life Stand, which for my money is the best Hot Chip album, but I suppose I'm happy that they're included in this list at all! It's still groovy as hell, I just don't think it has the infectiously compulsive "sing along" feeling of One Life Stand.
Extremely catchy - there's something almost drug-like about these songs, how irrisistable they are. And as good as the synth pop instrumentation is, much of its distinctiveness comes from the lead singer's voice - truly a unique sound. I had been introduced to this band's music early in their career, but had not returned to it much if at all, and I'm happy to listen again and find that they sound fantastic. And a very cohesive and engaging album at that.
Fun album, poppy electonica. Seems like it's trying to be more serious than thier previous albums. This is a fun album, easy 4. Repeats:motion sickness, night and day, flutes Skips:now there is nothing
I was familiar with the band but had never listened to this album. I enjoyed it.
Going from an actual '80s electronic dance album to a 2012 '80s-inspired electronic dance album the next day was somewhat interesting and fun to compare. I enjoyed this today.
I think that if I had stopped at one listen, then I may have been able to convince myself that this was a 5. But on a second listen of highlights, I realized that I didn’t really love this album.
While most songs were just "all right," a couple were "ALL RIGHT!" More good than bad on balance though and I'm glad to have heard it.
I had never heard of this and had zero expectations going in. Reading synth-pop and indietronica did begin to worry me a little bit, but I was so pleasantly surprised by this album. Really good chill listen.
Good
4/5 Good album Best track: Look at Where We Are
This is how you do electronic music, way better than most on this list. Was ready to give a 4.5 but the last four songs don't hit the same as the rest.
Tecno-pop tranquilo, con ritmo y buenas canciones. Sin ser un género que me apasione, lo cierto es que se escucha con facilidad y puede acompañar en cualquier entorno
Great dance beats but something about its hint of NPC-ness makes it fall short of 5 stars
Pretty good
Never heard of them but enjoyed the album all the way through. Solid cover art matching the mood of the music. Two thumbs up. Does it belong on this list? Weak maybe.
Nice sound. I liked the aesthetic of the sound. Definitely brings you back to simpler times
7/10. All girls do is listen to hot chip and lie
Solid Daft Punk/Nile Rodgers like jams and maybe a tad darker. 'Now There is Nothing' has an interesting Paul McCartney feel and 'Let Me Be Him' sounds like something Chris Martin may have stolen.
Nice electronica. The end.
Mijn eerste gedachte is.
Floor filling, blood pumping electronica, energetic, enthusiastic and unabashed, creating a big, clean and enjoyable sound. Probably the best synthpop band working today. Give in and let the fun wash over you.
mood tracker : D
Nice
pretty infectious, ngl
I fucking LOVED this! Never heard of Hot Chip nor did I too much reading about them. I'll be doing more listening and learning in the days to come.
3.5. I thought this started out strong but wasn’t as great in the second half. I did really enjoy a good chunk of this album though!
I like them, plus i met them personally so
Breezy, relaxed, fun, cool indie disco music. The sound of a chilled summer's evening on Primrose Hill / the sort of music that they like in that London. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Motion Sickness Date listened: 15/08/23
J'ai aimé p^lus cela queje pensais. Je n'aurais jamais écouté cela dans ma vie donc je remercie la liste. Il y plein de funk et d'electro melangé c'est vraiment cool et c'est un bon vibe pour courrir. J'ai bien choisit. 4.25
A nice blend of synths, hooks, decent songwriting and singing, and of course, great voice sampling, which I've always had a soft spot for. The songs up to and including "Flutes" are great and that one is a cracker. You could argue that their earlier material was more ground-breaking as Spotify listeners seem to confirm, but this is still good and maybe a more balanced LP.
It grew on me, initially neglecting as a hipster indie record. Beautiful innovative synth pop with a retro vibe, definitely evokes a lot of 80s post-disco. "Don't Deny Your Heart" could definitely be an early Madonna song. Meanwhile, some tracks like "Look at Where We Are" slow it down as part of the contemporary chillwave movement. His vocals are pretty versatile, taking on different genres from track to track, whether soft, hard, or weird. Either way, to dance to or pay attention, the synths are lush with cool production effects that make it a chill and fun listen from start to finish. There are weak tracks, like "These Chains", but the synth effects are still entertaining and fit appropriately.
Bizarre party, I want to be with you.
Some enjoyable dance stuff! I'm not always a big fan of the genre if it gets too repetitive and reliant on samples, but this is nicely written
I am surprised by the inclusion of this Hot Chip album as I feel other records they have made worked suit this list better. The album itself is really enjoyable. Dancy, vibey, groovy at times. Good work, scratches a low FOUR
I thought this was an excellent synth-pop album with some wonderfully groovy and funky tracks. It's just a good indie electronica listen. I wouldn't say this is my favourite electronic album by any means; while there were no bad tracks it didn't always draw me in like some albums have, but I think I will come back to this, and I feel it may grow on me with subsequent listens. Favourite: Flutes
21st July 2023 Listened across the weekend, Jen’s parents come to stay Friday and dad’s party Saturday. I love Hot Chip, I think they manage to create a sound which spans electro, house and northern soul. Instantly recognisable.
Trippy and weird but in a good way.might revisit it.Cool sounding “rock”?i guess
I honestly didn't expect to like this very much, but then found it really nice, easy listening during work. Relaxed but fun - nothing challenging, but good vibes.
I thought this had a lot more going on than most of its genre ilk, particularly in sound variety and vocals. The songs never drag on to wear out their welcome as so often happens in the dance/Electronica spectrum.
This music is great to put on in the background. It's inoffensive, not very loud or hectic and pleasant. But not what I'd actively listen to in my spare time.
Groovy and upbeat. Fun listen!
I don’t know what to make of this album but I guess… do I like it? Yes. Is it a great album? No. Do I want to listen to it again in the future? Yes. I liked the prior hot chip album a lot and this one feels like a polished evolution. It’s not an obvious easy album but maybe that is what makes it feel a little special.
Don't mind myself a bit of Hot Chip. Fave tracks are Don't Deny Your Heart, Night and Day, and Let Me Be Him.
I haven't listened to a great deal of Hot Chip and, yeah, this was pretty good - "Motion Sickness" sounds like slavish New Order worship, but they mixed things up enough as the album went on to hold my interest. Fave track - "Flutes" - it's got a prog house thing going on - reminded me a lot of Nathan Fake's "The Sky Was Pink" which is one of my all time faves!
This album sounded like some shit that would've been on my 2012 Pandora radio, but a hell of a lot catchier.
I love this album. Great grooves, great singing. Not sure why I haven't fallen in love previous, but this album has really grown on me.
Groovy. Indie electronic dance done right
Helt bra, mot förmodan! Svag fyra
4.0 - Reminds me of Brooklyn house parties in the 2010’s. Indie dance music. Dip a baby carrot in some hummus. Crack a beer you brought and put the rest in the fridge. Take a hit off this joint sitting in the ashtray. Find a seat by the open window and admire the sunny view.
Feels like the lovechild of Two Door Cinemas Club, Chemical Brothers, the synths of CVRCHES, and dance of Flight Facilities. Overall good, and one of the first albums from this list that I really did enjoy.
this was kinda sick actually
Hyvää elektronista poppia ja monen tyyppistä. These Chains tai joku hyvä uk carage viba ja flutes kova
It was really refreshing to get a chill and relaxed electronica album for once. Not big beats and harsh sounds, just some good vibes that would be nice to listen to as you’re hanging out with a small group or something. Flutes was my fav.
Loved it - superb album which I will get on vinyl.
This is one banging record! 4 Goddamn "Flutes" is fucking fire
Good, upbeat synth pop music with "novelty" guitar song! Gets under your skin and is pretty infectious.
Flute is an amazing track
I really enjoyed this, I’m not that into electronica but this was great I kinda feel it’s a genre I can slowly woo myself into going from any old rock band to something like the killers to MGMT to this is slowly moving my tastes into that indie electronica direction. Maybe one day I’ll find enjoyment in one of those mostly instrumental ones but not for now. 4/5
They’re good Hot Chip, I should listen to them more.
The first half of this is a perfect stretch of songs
очень напомнило джойвейв
Honestly, I don't understand why, when the latest reissue of "1001 albums..." needed to add some hipster favorites from the early 2010s, the creators decided to go with Hot Chip. Not Two Door Cinema Club, not Metronomy, or Vampire Weekend, but Hot Chip. And not their most obvious album, either! I mean, the album isn't bad, but the band had been together for ten years by then, and the youthful exuberance and energy that were fully present at the beginning... Well, it didn't evaporate, but it gave way to calmer and more mature, albeit still danceable, songs about love and long-term relationships. Which, again, is not a bad thing. Rüfüs Du Sol will soon be doing something similar — romantic electronic music that's just as good for one-on-one time as it is for a club dance floor. It's an okay record, but nothing special.
The album was fine. The videos were strange. Best song: "Always Been Your Love" nothing else really stood out. Not an album I would have on my shelves, but still it was fine listening to it once.
This was fun!
7.6
6/10 It played through twice while o was focussed, so neither offensive to the ear, nor particularly memorable
Not bad, not into synth like this (pop) but it isn't a bad album.
𝘐𝘯 𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘏𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘴 is a perfectly enjoyable electropop album, but it never really rises above that. Hot Chip have a knack for combining warm electronic production with understated pop melodies, making the album easy to listen to from start to finish. What the album lacks, at least for me, is a real sense of surprise. The songs are consistently well crafted, but few of them leave a lasting impression once they’re over. I enjoyed the experience while it lasted, yet I rarely felt compelled to pay closer attention. It’s a good example of modern electropop, just not one that I find especially memorable.
I like this band, but for some reason never encountered this particular album. Prob cause nothing on it was especially catching, would love to know the justification for some of these album’s inclusion on this list
Would I listen again: some songs hell yeah! This was such a mixed bag for me weirdly. Highlights were motion sickness, don’t deny your heart and let me be him. Sometimes the instrumentation was scratching my brain and sometimes it was annoying
Not my favourite work by them, but perfectly listenable
kinda fine, just not very interesting, a bit too electric for my tastes
bit of hot potato I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, but I always think they would be better with a different vocalist
Pretty solid synth pop. Something about it is kinda not for me, but it's got moments of brilliance. "How Do You Do?" is a pretty good song. "Now There is Nothing" is decent too.
3 stars I remember listening to this album. It was their newest album before seeing Hot Chip at Coachella 2013. The album is fine. Fun. But it gets old. That’s how I felt then and how I felt listening to it now. I wouldn’t have remembered this album if not for this list.
Poppin’ synthpop from Hot Chip. Good threefer with How Do You Do?, Don’t Deny Your Heart, and Look At Where We Are (best track.) Songs start to sound pretty similar early on, but it’s all good. (3.2*s) It was a great album for an elliptical session!
it’s a good album and match the book I’m reading about the 00’s perfectly, unfortunately I listened on a chaotic day and will forget everything about this by tomorrow
This was really good! Look at where we are is such a great tune! Will revisit this one!
Just started listening meee, meee. First thoughts sounds like a poor mans pet shop boys. Half way through iv nailed it. Human League/Heaven 17 and especially New Order. Would rather listen to the originals. Nothing offensive.
Definitely 2010s pop
good, not my favorite
Sounds nice. I had this around the same time as It’s Blitz by Yeah Yeah Yeahs and unfortunately the comparison is just not flattering when it comes to propulsive electronic rock. I also always get this band mixed up with Hercules and the Love Affair. This and Passion Pit and similar “everything and the kitchen sink” genre-blending electro pop acts will likely go down in history as millennialslop. It just doesn’t have any sense of urgency.
It’s ok alternative dance type music but I’ve heard better
It's probably due to the fact that I had a run of 5 or so albums from the 50's/60's right before this one, but ai enjoyed this album more than I should have. It sounds fresh and fun.
I usually go for the synth pop revival thing, but this is just ok. Feel like a solid half of the 2000s and 2010s picks on this list are quite random and maybe were buzzy at the time but are now fairly obscure. Liked some of it, but its lacking anything particularly memorable
This is a band that I listen to often but I have never listened to a whole album. It is a dance band. It is fun. I do think that there is often a difference in a song versus an album and I feel that this project will show some of those moments. An album is often a capture in time which may show trends or musical preoccupations. I am not sure that this is a cohesive set of songs to put together. Thematically, they do seem to hold but there isn't any that have to be there. That isn't to say that this isn't a good album just that it seems more of a bunch songs that they were doing at the same time. I hear inspirations of the 80s; Thompson Twins, a song or two that wouldn't be out of place on an XTC record, or even Erasure. Less produced than the 80s and so it doesn't feel rehashed. Sampling of birds was done by Art of Noise and the Orb and doesn't feel out of place here. A few times I found myself wondering about whether there was a connection to LCD Soundsystem and I wasn't too surprised that there is one. There are a few more thinky songs and that's okay. I mean from the top with Motion Sickness, you can tell that the lyrics can be fun. Night and Day reminds me of a cheesier Fischer Spooner in places and was one of the songs that made me wonder about and LCD Soundsystem connection. I mean dance and sex goes together. Flutes is a standout. Flaming Lips comes to mind. Maybe it is some of the lyrics and vocals that draw this parallel to me. Now there is nothing is the XTC lite track I was thinking about. Maybe a reject from Skylarking album. Some 70s feeling cheese here. AOR stuff. Like an Alice Cooper dance tune. Let Me Be Him with the steel guitar sound and birds reminds me of KLF and the Tammy Wynette alternates. Look. Sometimes you just want to dance and don't want it to be so vacuous and vapid. This is a time to put on some IDM or something like this. It can be cheesy and interesting at the same time. Not sure this feels like a necessary 1001 album but you could definitely pull worse examples. As I said, I often put Hot Chip on. That makes it start at a 3 unless the album had songs that would make me turn it off. Nothing has swayed me to put this album on versus others nor has it made me want to pick this band over a dozen others, so I guess it stays at a 3. Now, I didn't add any of the songs to my favourites list. Not quite sure what that means. I will have to sit on that as I develop how I mark these records.
Quite nice, nothing too crazy or special but a nice synthpop record
Not bad! Enjoyed a lot of it. Maybe a little too long. Ended one song too late. Thought it was gonna be an attempt to revive 80s synthpop at first but things got better as the album went on. A good example of the album generator needing half ratings cuz I would easily have given this a 3.5. Alas.
Hot Chip got added in as part of the 2013 edition of the book - just one year after the album's release. It's one of those cases where, hearing it fresh today, the significance of its inclusion is weakened; the writers could not have foreseen this particular sound being diluted to hell in the following decade. Case in point: most of these songs come across as Discover Weekly fodder. Of course, Discover Weekly does tend to bless you with some divine pulls every once in a while....... Standouts: Motion Sickness • These Chains • Night and Day
I mean, it's a pretty good 80s album, for being from 2012. It does get a bit try-hard in places, and overall becomes quite samey. A fun listen though.
I dig this album! It feels very cozy strangely, much like the Everything but the Girl album.
Pretty good, not bad.
Boring
It had its moments.
El disco me gustó, están buenas las canciones. Me pareció muy largo cada tema nomás.
Hot Chip cool. Surely earlier albums are more essential? I don't know but I'm fairly confident Rob would have blown it. Or in classic over doing it fashion, they're on here too.
im not sure how i feel abt this.
3 Hot Chip? Aren’t they responsible for that Shaq meme? Did Shaq eat these guys?? Anyway, I saw beforehand that the band is classified as “alternative dance”, so I was hoping to hear something similar to LCD Soundsystem, a group I’m quite fond of, but they actually turned out to have a sound much more evocative of New Order - which hey, that’s cool, I like them too! And I gotta say, this album starts out STRONG in that regard. I absolutely loved the opener, Motion Sickness, and by the time How Do You Do? rolled around, I found myself dancing around my place. Like, I don’t really consider myself much of a club kid, but if this is the stuff they were playing at the club, I would probably tear that place up. And yes, as I write that out now, I’m aware of how cringe that sounds, but those were the honest to God thoughts I had when I first put this on. And yet, without fail, this album seemed to inevitably lose me somewhere around the middle each time that I listened to it. I can’t pinpoint any specific song or even a reason as to why it did exactly, but for some reason, no matter how much groove I had in me at the start, the last few songs found me groove-less, sitting down, and waiting for it to end. I’m inclined to say it's simply a matter of weaker songwriting in the back half, but it’s also just as possible I got tired of the vibe around that point as well. Maybe a little of column A, a little of column B? It also doesn’t help that a lot of the longer songs are placed towards the end as well. Like, Let Me Be Him was fine enough, but I really didn’t need 8 minutes of it nearly an hour into the album. If this album were trimmed down a bit, it could very possibly get a 4 from me, but the way it’s organized now just does not hold my attention for its full duration. It’s cool to hear what a modern New Order might sound like, but for me, it’s not quite New Order level of catchy songwriting. Still, I’m happy to have become acquainted with Hot Chip, and I could definitely see myself checking out more of their stuff in the future!
80’s Culture Club vibes.
Pleasant enough but nothing that would bring me back for multiple listens.
It's alright. A little generic and bland. I thinknI prefer their counterparts Cut Copy; they share a lot in common. Also, there are more substantial Hot Chip albums out there.
this album started strong and then lost me as it kept going. peaked at "Look At Where We Are" and after that i was just less and less interested (though "Always Been Your Love" brought me back a bit).
nice safe middle of the road album
it was ok
'Remember when we both first felt the world is sound, the world is sound?' Like much else here, that's the sort of line that weds the profound to the joyous - the vast to the satisfied - & makes a happy project like this more than happy. I've always felt that it's harder to make art that's unabashedly joyful than it is to be steeped in negativism: you have to work thru more problems. But tho this isn't The Rascals, DeBarge, or the Pet Shop Boys' Very, In Our Heads succeeds to the extent that it teaches us to be in better moods. 'Won't you come back to my heart / There's something I'm trying to say.' It also bares out mysteries in the forms of memories, introducing the listener to some sort of inner world. & yet, it's also just dance music.
Head never heard of this band. I enjoyed it, it has a nice retro feel about it. Clean eighties sound. I never felt this was a must listen, though
3.5 i'd say, good parts couple of times in between
Exactly as I remember hot chip flat out boppy electronica. Infectious beats and sugary airy nonsense lyrics for the most part. Some standouts but such as night and day but got a little repetitive by the end. Still three stars although could be being slightly generous.
This record was pretty good. I didn't really enjoy the tracks at the beginning and end, but the ones in the middle were pretty good. Favourite Track(s): Night And Day Least Favourite Track(s): Motion Sickness, Let Me Be Him, Always Been Your Love
Feels good to be returning to the 2010s once again. The included albums from this decade are always easygoing and listenable, even if I don't think most of them are any good within the context of a "must-listen" list. I've never heard of this band or album, though I think it's pretty obvious that this will be an electronic album, albeit either an aggressive, electroclashy, of-the-time release or something more minimal and artsy. I think I'll hedge my bets on the former. Here goes. Wow, this album kind of falls down the exact middle of my two predictions. I wasn't expecting that. Anyways, this was solid. It doesn't entirely play to my musical sensibilities, but this music wins points for being representative of the time. Not in the headlining, majorly prominent kind of way, but it existed in a comfortable niche among people who had a vested interest in music. Millennial hippies, in other words. This is a difficult album to put in a box and break down, not just because the music is electronic. The style and sounds of this album change with just about every track and there are many unusual chord progressions, yet the album somehow manages to maintain a satisfying level of cohesion. There are some interesting sounds in here. The percussive electronic sounds are generally the best of this album. They have a nice, glossy finish to them - particularly those funky synths which underscore much of the music. The dated synths which drive the melodies of this album are quite good, too. I picked up sounds that were reminiscent of 70s prog rock and 2000s ambient music, though I'm sure there are plenty of other musical pastiches in here as well. Also of note are the real instruments which were thrown into the mix. The bass guitar is a constant highlight, adding a lot of bite and purchase to these tracks, though I appreciated the occasional cymbal clashes as well. The flamboyant songwriting isn't for me, but it gets the job done. The eclectic vocal style meshes with these electronic sounds quite well. My only real complaints with this album are that it drags on for a little longer than it's welcome, the songwriting can be a little vacuous at points and I find this music to be too impersonal for my tastes. Other than that, I had an alright time listening to this album. Book time. The band's "...most colorful and exuberant to date [...] but has a hefty helping of philosophy." "Theirs is a musical and spiritual quest that places emphasis and importance not on the outcome, but on the adventure and the journey." Man, this is such a millennial hippie album. Wikipedia says this album was recorded in five months, was well-received by critics and had surprise chart success. Granted, it was only modest for the most part, but the album charted in 14 different countries across Europe and the West. Like I said earlier, this album is a good representation of where music was at during the time, so I think its spot is well-earned on this list. I cosign this inclusion.
7/10 Buen album, buenos ritmos que no aburren, no destaca nada pero tampoco decepciona
Pensei que fosse gostar mais desse, mas a produção não vai pro meu gosto.
It's well made but none of these songs quite do it for me
Another album where I am going in completely blind. This is quite poppy. It has its moments that I enjoy, but also plenty of dead time. I think I like the instrumentals much more than the vocals and lyrics.
oo flute is rlly giood
Nice enough electro pop with an early 10cc vibe in places. Nothing exceptional for me though.
1. "How Do You Do?" 2. "Don't Deny Your Heart" 3. "Look at Where We Are"
Je elektronischer es war, desto mehr mochte ich es.
I can really enjoy synth pop like this for a song, maybe two. But, in all, this was just too much synth and too much pop for me to rate the entire album very highly.
So. Much. Meh. Was this included on this list so the Pet Shop Boys wouldn't feel lonely? I mean, let's start at the beginning. It's not "lush baroque pop", so +2 for that! Otherwise, the music sounds like someone ran Moby through the Crapulator 3000 (the newest in enshittification technology!) and the lyrics underwhelm like a mid-70s American sedan. I'll give one more star for the beats in Night and Day, but otherwise, this is straight meh from front to back.
I like electropop, so I've tried these guys out before. It is all pleasant but I don't find myself going back.
I want to say the '80s called and they want their synths back, but it wasn't that bad.
Overall, these are some very mild chips. It's summery and light, toe tapping radio music but not something I really want to sit down and devote my attention to. The kind of music you hear on a travel advert and go "huh this is okay". A lot of these songs are quite stationary though, and so they get old fast. "How Do You Do?" was the first time I felt that creeping feeling like the song needed a changeup somewhere in it that wasn't there. Their poppier songs remind me a bit of Okay Go, another band that ultimately makes me feel very tepid. Nothing here is BAD, but very little here made me feel much of anything. I guess I like Now There is Nothing. Big Shrug energy.
it was good. a couple of songs that kind of got stuck in my head. not sure i'll listen to it again.
Sort of a blend between lcd Soundsystem, cage the elephant, and generic club electronic beats. The first two aspects were exciting but the third dragged the album as a whole.
I quite like Hot Chip but not much outstanding about this album really.
This was a solid album. Not normally a fan of this genre, but it was very palatable.
In Our Heads has a clear UK electronic feel, but it doesn’t leave a strong impression on me. Night and Day stands out for me, while the rest of the album feels easy to listen to but not very memorable.
Okayy
Not a fan of electronic but this was fun
This album was interesting with its pop centric electro dance sounds.
Above average EDM dance music. Not my thing, but won't kill my verve.
Fairly solid electronic album. I wouldn't have any issue listening to this again.
Danceable album. Very good. 3,5
Even though I enjoyed their big hit 'Over And Over' during what I perceived as their peak during the big landfill indie boom of the 2000s, I'm not sure who Hot Chip influenced in the grand scheme of things and I'm baffled by the inclusion. That being said, this was some damn catchy synth-pop. On an album full of earworms, 'Night And Day' might be the most infectious. With his weedy voice, the vocalist does get a touch irritating. This band doesn't sound like they stand for anything and their music doesn't have a lot to say, but it just wants to gets the listener moving and it does this rather successfully.
Not bad but nothing special either. Not sure why albums like this make the list. Especially considering how new it is compared to the rest.
Not the slightest idea who this is. I’m buckling in at 11pm. Love! Mellow a lot of times in a way that removes the barrier to entry I usually feel with electronic music. Look at where we are. Will watch the tiny desk.
Band good, album soso
I actually really like the genres and styles this album is categorized under. That’s why I was curious to see what I’d hear. Maybe there’s a reason I’ve never heard of this band before. I found the whole thing pretty boring, though. I probably won’t actively listen to it again. 3/5
Better than conldplay
I have never heard of this band. I had to double check the year (2012) because it sounded like an 80s or 90's album. I found this quite enjoyable.
I’d never heard of this band before, but they didn’t disappoint. A bit like the Pet Shop Boys, a bit eighties… I thought they sounded pretty good 😊
I was kinda surprised I liked this. It’s got this electronic beat. The singers voice is….okay? It could use some work, but not bad. The album itself is this Synth pop album. Not bad.
2.5 I have definitely given them time, they’ve featured on the college radio that I’ve listened to for decades. But a lot whole album is samey, and I think they hold onto this sound throughout? Some of it works, but it gets muddy
I like the cover, 2000s indie vibes. Look at where we are has dub influences
2.5 - This is fine, but it feels out of place on this list.
Love The Chip.
It's a good listen though to be honest I'm not sure it's Hot Chip's best record. In this case that probably says as much about the strength of the band's output as it does about the list. Hidden depths; up to us to find them.
I feel like I'm listening to the soundtrack to a FIFA game.
I vaguely knew, or had heard, the name Hot Chip before. It had me worried that they were responsible for one of those unforgivably awful cutesy pop songs of the noughties - Fascination, That's Not My Name, the sort of song which should have been blocked at Inception. But I don't think it's them. Instead, they turned out to be a less interesting, less good version of The Delays. While Faded Seaside Glamour is a must listen, five star album, this is a fine, straight down the middle three star slice of pop rock. I can think of no reason why this is on the list, beyond recency bias.
It's not bad. I don't mind like electro rock. Not as good as I had hoped though. Vocals are not the best.
Wasn’t my fav but flutes was a great track.
A perfectly ok dance-ish pop album. It’s not bad, but I don’t think deserves a spot on the list. Yet another British band/artist getting placed here for the authors apparent geographical bias
Having heard a song of Hot Chip's from an earlier album, my main question going into this album was whether it would be style over substance. The short answer, as I was to discover, was yes. This album is essential electropop made by urban-dwelling people in their 20s who wear glasses and want to get laid for other urban-dwelling people in their 20s who wear glasses and want to get laid. Being more into guitar music, the only song that stood out to me was Look At Where We Are. It had a catchier chorus and a slightly different sound than the generic techno beats but also that annoying squeaky voice that musical artists sometimes use. I've never quite understood the appeal of having Alvin and his chipmunk friends as backing vocalists but maybe something out there enjoys it. Perhaps those urban-dwelling people in their 20s who wear glasses and want to get laid.
It had played through and started again without me even noticing which says a lot! Nothing wrong with it per se but didn’t grab me by the ears and make me listen!
We have Phoenix at home and I like it more
Really liked Flutes and The Chains. Others neither stood out nor offended
Really liked “Flutes” and “Let Me Be Him.” Others are background music in a good way. This got close to a 4 but not quite there for me
🎧Pretty mixed bag here
I can't really put into words how I felt about this, but it was rather ambivalent. Decently high highs, moderately low lows, but nothing exceptional.
Hm, fand die früher immer ganz cool, aber irgendwie belanglos. Stimmt immer noch.
I enjoyed this more than my 3 rating indicates. It was fun and catchy. I just don't care for the repetitive nature of some of the songs.
started out pretty good, but i got a bit bored of it. also didn't looove the singer's voice
I never gave this record a chance back in the day, but hearing it now, maybe more mature, definitely older, I can see why a subset of the indie crowd loved it. It has some good songs but I can feel it's a bit overlong.
Uhm, it’s alright I suppose. Generally fun, but also kinda boring at the same time. Stand-outs - These Chains - Flutes
Unoriginal, run of the mill, good for exercise I suppose.
expecting: instrumental background music got: fun music with words Unexpectedly liked this quite a bit, added several songs to the rotation. Quite liked Now There is Nothing, Where we Are, and Night & Day.
I like this enough to think that one day I will think to myself "I should put on Hot Chip while I work today"
I used to really like Hot Chip - and I would score the two prior albums: Made in the Dark and One Life Stand - both 5's if they were on this list as they are jam packed with great tunes. This album marked where I started to loose interest in them. It feels much weaker than the prior albums and lacks the hooks and magic.
Not my favorite album so far but nowhere near the worst, either. Dig three tracks enough to add them to my likes. Solid 3/5
Pas dégueu, mais assez pour un 4
-Fun, synth dance rock/pop of the 00s and 2010s. I wasnt huge into them specifically but I retain an affinity for this genre of music, it just sounds like 2012 to me.... You kinda had to be there, I guess but the millennial nostalgia is strong. I'll go strong 3 because I need to be more discerning with my 4s, but this is a good album.
