Reviews (page 5 of 7)

Not very memorable, but not bad

Not awful.

I thought I liked Hot Chip. But apparently I only like OLD Hot Chip. Two songs tickled my fancy but previous albums are just better and more fancy and fun.

Definitely don't need to convince me to listen to a Hot Chip album. That said, the only song I recognized was "Flutes," which incidentally is one of my favorites. Upbeat with a few quirky detours, the only detraction is the amount of singing. More Hot, less Chip please.

Maybe derivative is too harsh a word to describe how I feel about this album. Mostly I find it to be very emblematic of 2010s dance/electronic music while trying to evoke the power of 80s synth pop. Overall, it was an enjoyable listen but I don't know if I would throw this on just to listen to. The kind of thing that girls I had a crush on in high school would listen to and I just couldn't get into it.

It was good. I liked it, but some of the songs felt too long.

quite enjoyable disco music

Not Chip (2.5/5)

As far as electronic stuff goes, this was pretty chill to listen to on the way to work. 3.0

I’ll have to admit I was a little disappointed by this album since they have another route I really like

I have been really torn with how to rate this album. Initially, I was really pulled in, and started to enjoy it. However, 20 minutes in, I kinda forgot it was still on, and it began to sound really forgettable and all merging into one. I'd say this is a good album to have on whilst working, in the background, you can sort of feel it's presence but it's not doing much else other than filling the silence.

The fact that this is an electronica album and I didn't hate it is no small achievement. It was an OK listen but there's nothing here that would compel me to want to listen to it again.

after i put my CD of The Warning through its paces on iTunes almost 20 years ago, i remember being pretty disappointed by Made In the Dark. i always wondered if my teenage self was being unfair, but i think she actually made some cogent points - Hot Chip is much better at their fastest & punchiest to me. the cracks start to show on the slow tracks and the ballads. the same falsetto that sounds so zippy on the real bangers turns treacly and put-upon whenever the tempo slows down. unfortunately, this album has all the same problems as Made in the Dark. it's possible i just want hot chip to be something they're not, and this is how they always intended to sound. maybe The Warning was a fluke. i don't know! this is still a good album, but it would've been a great one with more tracks like Careful and Boy From School. let the indie darlings more suited to it handle the chill dreampop and hazy ballads. i want some chiptune roof-raisers!!

another decent album, but underwhelming. not good enough for a 4 and not bad enough for a 2, so 3 stars it is. these songs are too long and don't really go anywhere interesting. also did the other reviewers listen to the same album i did?? saying things about how "unabashedly upbeat and happy" it was and the parts that are "deliberately echoing" famous songs??? this album makes me feel like i'm at M83's funeral. favorites: don't deny your heart, now there is nothing

Not usually a fan of long instrumentals but this is pretty funky. There might not be much to the lyrics but that's not the focus in this genre and the beats make up for it. Highlights: How Do You Do? These Chains

indie-electro-pop? i like it. good find from 1001albums, haven’t heard of hot chips before. Favorite track: these chains other picks: look at where we are, flutes, let me be him

The best mostly-electronic album I've gotten so far, but that's a pretty low bar. I did enjoy this one though.

That first song is one of the best songs I've ever heard. The rest of the album feels like it's daring you to say it's garbage. where is the line between genius and trash? I don't know but this threads that needle very carefully. A pop album that lacks populism. 2000's were a weird time.

Interesting. I don't know that I've strong feelings on this album one way or another it's not normally the type of music I would choose to listen to

Bit slow for me

Thought this was banging to start with. Came back later and felt like I'd seen through the bullshit. But then I liked it again. It's good.

It's good but lacks variety for its long length

It's just a bit better than OK, a 3.5. I am unlikely to listen to it again as it didn't draw me in, but if a track came on, I wouldn't switch it off

Tecno renovado 20 años después. Está bien

Motion Sickness // Look At Where We Are // Flutes // 3.5/5

Well, this album was pleasant enough. I probably would have rated it better if it was edited to around 40 minutes. None of the songs really landed with me. Maybe I have just encountered too much electronica/dance music lately. Why are there so many of these albums on this list? Do they really warrant the label of "must listen" or were they really just part of a moment in time and should have been left there? Just an average album for me...

Never heard of them before nor did I recognize any of the songs on this album. Some descend Brit electro-pop. Nothing remarkable, but better than many.

Very dispensary-core. Very 2012 Foster the People, but indietronic type beat. Not my favorite, but pretty inoffensive. Every song is too long

Some decent songs

Bright, layered indie dance. Reminds me of Pet Shop Boys. “Night and Day” has a cool, weird club beat. There’s actually a mix of stuff on here, not just dance music. Though I like the dancey tracks the most. “Let Me Be Him” was a highlight for me too.

Nostalgia

I’ve never listened to this album before, but I vaguely remember listening to Hot Chip's Made In The Dark sometime close to when it was released. If I recall correctly, I didn't care for it too much, because I think I just found it kind of boring. Regardless, I'm curious as to how I'll like this album, and I excited to give it a listen. I thought this album was pretty good. It was fun to listen to, and I liked how easy it was to dance along to. The first few songs were the best on the album. I enjoyed how the main melodies were really bright in tone, but the deep bass grooves provided a really great contrast. The album started to drag for me when I got to “Night and Day,” which was probably my least favorite song on the album. Even though “Night and Day” and “Now There Is Nothing” were the only two songs on the album that I had a strong dislike for, after “Night and Day,” the album never got close to matching the peak of the first three songs again. This album was fun while I was listening to it, but nothing was memorable enough to hang around in my mind after I finished listening to it. This album wasn’t bad, but I didn’t find it particularly noteworthy, especially when I think of it in the greater context of other synth-driven albums from the same time period that I really like.

Don't know if I need a whole album of this, but it's a pleasant listening experience. Definitely some hipster shit tho. 3.

Another song called Motion Sickness?? It’s kinda fun, just not better than the other one. Albums like these make me wonder why they’re here. Not in a mean way just that I don’t know why! I don’t dislike it, I just don’t explicitly like it. It’s nice to have in the background of my drive, though. A solid 3.

I’m going to surprise us all by being semi-kind to some electronic music. It okay. Not as tedious or overwrought as other electronic junk I’ve suffered through for this challenge. It’s more subdued and actually resembles music.

A definite foot-tapper of an album.

I thought this was alright but seems mad to me that it ended up on an albums you must hear list. Was this even on album of the year lists in 2012??

Day202 - i saw electronica and was ready to hate it but it’s pretty good sort of daft punk meets the pet shop boys

This album is very elctro pop meets Indie. Hot chip have a great sound. Motion sickness is a tune. Favourite song: Motion sickness Least favourite: Dont deny your heart and look at where we are. Album artwork: Love the cover

I wasn't super in to this until "These Chains" which reminded me of the electronic dance pop music I liked back in the day. The songs before that were pretty forgettable for me. I guess the notability of this album is the return to mixing what is now called "EDM" with pop music and rock instruments. It's been done before certainly, and like I said there were bands and individuals making tracks like these well before 2000. I enjoyed "These Chains", "Night and Day" and "Ends of the Earth". I think the tempo in all three cases makes them more appealing to me than the rest. I wouldn't call this groundbreaking or anything; it's pretty good. Just not great.

Completely inoffensive, but also mostly uninteresting. I enjoyed some of the production choices, though didn’t think they were entirely original. They’ve got a semi-unique sound. Lyrics are unexciting. Wasn’t a fan, myself. 3/5

Considering the fact that in my list of musical preferences, electronic dance music ranks below didgeridoo and apes beating on hollow logs with the long bones of animals, this album was better than both of those options.

Based on description alone I expected to hate this. Honestly though, it's not awful. Electronic dance music is not my style, and it's nothing I would probably ever listen to again, but I don't find it offensive. Some of the composition is interesting, and for the most part it is pleasant. I understand why others would be drawn to it.

a few songs i liked but cant remember them a day later after listening but do remember it being right down the middle and nothing else

We disavow. Reminded me of a short period in my life when the radio was my only entertainment and I had to search for something listenable. I was switching between a station that played music like this and talk stations. The memories, good and bad. Mostly bad. I didn't like the slower songs much but Look at Where We Are is hella good.

For once, an album I can understand why it is on this list. This sounds so ahead of the time it was released in. I don't know where I have heard Flutes before but it's so good and I was scratching my head trying to figure out why I recognised it when it started playing

pleasant but I didn't like it enough to buy the album

This album is okay, might need a few more listens to grow on me

Good but only for very specific moods, a pretty repetitive album Favorite song: motion sickness

I kinda neglected/dismissed this when it came out for some reason. It's super. Not my favorite or 2nd favorite Hot Chip but still. 3.5

Enjoyed this a lot. Reminded me a bit of Underworld but a bit less intense.

Some songs are great, some are pathetic attempts to sound like the 1980s synth pop their parents used to play. Songs are long. Favorite song: these chains

Alternative rock with a pop feel. Not too bad. Started off strong then kinda died off at least for me.

Lindo popero, coqueteando lo techno con la balada

Favourite tracks: flutes

It's soft indietronica with post-rock progressions and it can be sweet and it can be boring.

It starts off very nicely, then becomes somewhat monotonous, although there are still a couple of energizers, such as Flutes.

I like some Hot Chip songs but haven’t really been introduced to more than the occasional song on another “artist radio” while streaming. Although this one wasn’t something I feel compelled to listen to over again, I do think I’ll listen to the other Hot Chip albums since I enjoy their style.

It's a pretty solid, upbeat and bouncy album, but it doesn't ever reach beyond that. There's some good tracks in here, but nothing particularly standout. It's just generally a good time.

I guess this was a ok 2.5/5

Felt like a synth 80s album. Nothing great, nothing terrible. Just fine.

Pleasantly surprised but not quite to my taste and a tad long

This reminded me of new order a bit. Not bad.

it's an interesting album, but also kind of boring overall 3.1

Some catchy songs

Hot Chip makes fun music, but I'm not sure that I would have put this album on this list. I don't know that this album was all that innovative for 2012. Perhaps that's because I spent the whole time I was listening to it writing emails to shitheads at work. Still, it's a toe-tapper 3/5

Listened to it several times. It failed to make an impression.

Hot Chip always sound like Hot Chip.

Easy listening

Track 1 is grand and quit lovely. 2 gained power, as I didn't like the start but it gets better. Nice synth lines. Vocals are not the strongest here, but track 3's production and composition is pretty great. 4 is less interesting to me as it leans on vocal and guitar. Vocal production is not for me aswell. Track five is also not my favorite. A bit flat. Not much going on other than nice key glisandos. 6 is fine. Not something I'll be going back to. 7 is a long and very strong song in this album. Maybe my favorite so far. 8. Is more of a rock song with vocal harmonies. Actually it works really nice. Interesting composition and very nice textures. Track 9 goes back into the synthpop vibe of the record. Sounds like something from the late 80's early 90's. Super track. My best here so far. Wow. Vocals work best here as well. Track 10 is nice. The backing vocals are a bit cringe. And it maybe is a bit too long. Yeah, it is too long. 11. Let's close it here. A very nice song. Again some cringe women vocals. But the base here is very very nice and sweet If this album was a shorter and sharper 40-45 minutes project,  I think it would benefit from it very much and could be close the a masterpiece. But judging it as it is, it's still a great record with many highlights. Some songs didn't do it for me, as well as some production choices. But I enjoyed my ride It's a 3.8

Deserves a second listen but it's a steady 3* for now

Alright, not bad! Contemporary Pet Shop Boys? The post-rock-turned-techno from Vessels but with pop𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘨𝘴 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘦𝘳? This is neat. [...] ... I thought for a while but now I have the urge to - Oho-Oh-Ohoho-Eoh - skip through it. This isn't giving me anything I'd actually like or need to have. It's all just very whatever. At #84, the most interesting entry in the Electronica genre so far, sure, but that bar is crazy low. Still, not an actual bad or even truly boring album, but why is it here?

Sopivasti tunnelmaa ja menoa, pari kertaa pyöritti helposti läpi.

I’m not sure how I’ve never listened to this album before. In 2012 I was super into indie rock and loved similar bands like LCD Soundsystem. Hot Chip somehow slipped by me. I like the sound a lot - it reminds me of a better version (sorry…) of Glass Animals, which I’m not very into. The last minute of Don’t Deny Your Heart is pretty awesome, and Look At Where We Are especially sounds like the song Glass Animals wants to make (I feel bad about hating on them when I’ve only heard a few songs, I will give them another try). The album slips a bit for me on Night and Day, the lyrics are awkward and so is the tune for me. After this, even the single Flutes, sound very samey to me. I like it, but I’m not compelled to come back to it and it’s one of the first albums that I don’t quite understand being included in the 1001 Albums list.

Was expecting to like this one a bit more than I did. 'Night and Day' is a banger, a lot of the rest was just too lightweight disco pop for me.

Really fun! Missed these dudes when they first came out.

Its fine and fun, just not my kinda fun

I was about to give this 4 stars because at the time of listening, I kinda liked it, some tracks even really liked. But now, a few hours later, I don't remember any of it and don't feel the need to listen to it again.

I felt there was a bit more variation in this album, even though the vocalists did not seem to range a lot in their emotions while singing. It reminded me a bit of The Human League (you know "Don't You Want Me") but the sound was updated for the 21st century. There was no one song that I rolled my eyes at, so there's a plus. Usually I get to this kind of act and it gets a little over the top. I just wish there was a bit more from the singers (except in "Night and Day," that was pretty good, although it could have been edited down a bit). In fact a few of the songs could have been trimmed. And WTF were they singing in "Flutes" in the background? No, that wasn't annoying at all... Top tracks: "Let Me Be Him" "Night and Day"

Why is so much of what is on the 1,001 list from the last decade or so electronica? Is that really the only stuff that is really unique and noteworthy these days? I hope not. I didn't mind this album, but at times it got on my nerves - beats just droning on, same old vocals blending in with the beats, annoying effects. The lead vocalist reminds me of so many other vocalists from this era - Foster the People immediately comes to mind. So, not unique. Some songs really stuck out and got me grooving - How Do You Do?, Night and Day, Ends of the Earth. A couple others were better than average but not quite great - Motion Sickness, Don't Deny Your Heart. A little too inconsistent for me.

Reminiscent of 80's New Wave -- it's pleasant enough for background music, but doesn't really push any boundaries for me. Unexpected banger: Flutes, I guess.

I was expecting this to be an album pre 2000 as most are and I was shocked when I played it, I was like this sounds really ahead of its time, but no it's slightly recent. Album reminds me of the songs they played in Victoria Secret when I was younger and my mother would take me with her.

Not sure what to make of this. It was listenable and varied but not an album I’d go back to. Low 3*

Interesting album. I enjoy its song

Hot Chip have never failed to miss the mark for me. I always think to myself that they should be incredible, I can see what they're trying to do and literally every time I hear them, I think "I should be subscribing to your newsletter" - yet every time I think "This should be so much better than it actually is". I've not heard this album before, or any track on it. So let's see how it pans out. Maybe this will be the one that wins me over? It isn't. Yet again I've found myself so very close to really liking it. There were a couple of tracks that I actually did enjoy, but it's jus a little bit not quite there.

Easy listening, don’t know if I’d really listen to the album all the time

I literally have nothing to say about this other than "It was good background music". The most 3/5 album ever made.

Solides Album aus abwechslungsreichen Gesangseinlagen, Technoelementen und Popeinflüssen. Es ist kein fesselndes aber ein ordentliches Album. Von den Songs stach “Look At Where We Are” hervor und gefiel mir sogar besser als “Flutes”.

Flutes is a killer but it was a little samey overall

2 hours long. 23 songs.

An above average electro dance album. 3 stars

Liked it for the most part, very consistent album only reason I didn't give it a 4/5 is that I'm not sure I loved any of the songs as much as I just liked most of them. Never heard of em before, cool sound

Really good synthpop album that feels like an updated New Order. Really danceable but not repetitive. “Motion Sickness” is one hell of an opener, multilayered and with a bunch of cool samples (did I hear “Homework”-era Daft Punk?). Synthpop often sounds a little empty and tinny but from a production standpoint this is really full and balanced. I listened a second time on headphones, which was way better.

chill and vibey. Wood give another listen.

Eh, doesn't stand out.

Alright, but not too special

Cute. Clearly talented, but feels frivolous.

Look At Where We Are is a banger, the rest is good

Decent electronic band, but nothing in their sound is particularly ground-breaking. If any album of theirs would warrant being in this book, it is The Warning, and even that sounds pedestrian compared to electronic dance albums being released by Justice and LCD Soundsystem in the same time frame.

top 1000 british artist!!!(other countries not good music. behind) första låten började med samma Jarre instrumental som jag trodde att vi nästan var i framtiden.. sen började sången och popbrummandet.. varför måste det vara ett så själlöst ljud och varför måste man lägga pumptsikkapumpum-grejer överallt. .Jag gillade det fortfarande..prkl..prkl ends of the earth

.Much underrated band with excellent run of electro pop albums.

Cover Impression: Probably another British pop-type band. Kinda disappointed how close the guess was knowing nothing about the band. However there was an electronic piece I didn't expect which is nice. This is one of the newer albums I've had on the list and I'm not sure I'd have thought it would be something to revise my list for, but it is a decent album and a few moments reminded me of some other bands such as dredg and Brother. Favorite track: "Look at where we are" 3/5

I struggled with Hot Chip 10/15 years ago except for that one "Ready For The Floor" song and that's not on this, so I still struggle today, because nothing really stands out.

Liked it. Especially Flutes. 3.5/5

Nice soft rock/electro pop album. No real standout track, but it made for a nice listen.

I am usually not that big of a Hot Chip fan... I think they sound too... meek somehow? Maybe that is further reinforced by the singers rather timid voice. Fast forward to now; this was actually a pretty decent album! 'Look At Where We Are' is probably my favourite song of the album, but the rest of the songs held up very well. I'm weighing between a 4 and a 3, but I think it might not stand against the other 4 star albums I've rated so it'll have to be a very strong 3.

Surprised when the only song i knew by Hot Chip was not this album. Since i only knew "Ready For The Floor" I was expecting quirky lighthearted pop. However, some of the songs were suprisingly progressive such as "Night and Day" which sounded more like something crystal castles would have produced than my image of Hot Chip. A good album with surprisng depth. A solid 3.

The sound is bright, just like the album cover! No emotional "roller coaster" , but instead some interesting dance rhythms and harmonies. And i like synth things there

Mh actually not that bad

This album jumped out of the gate with a bang! I really enjoyed the first song. The second song cooled off a little bit for me, but it took me back to an age of playing Atari in television when graphics were poor so the electronic sounds were important to your senses.

Didn’t recognize any of it, surprisingly. But it was alright.

a light 3 stars, pretty mid.

There are so many better Hot Chip albums.

Wasn’t sure how I’d feel about this but there were some absolute bangers - it was groovy and catchy and with some pretty strong vocals as well. It dragged slightly in places but one I’ll come back to

Not my favourite genre, but I didn’t mind this. Started out quite enjoying it, but I was a little bored by the end. Didn’t care for Night and Day.

enjoyable

Upbeat and positive. Excellent beats. Kinda smart and clever. Otherwise not particularly memorable. Remember to revisit.

Ganz nette elektronische Musik mit Gesang. Drei Sterne.

I went back and forth between a 3 and 4. It started off wonderfully with some great Brit Trance-dance pop. The vocals compliment nicely and the mixing is excellent with great rhythm. Honestly, the music itself is nice, but ultimately it’s let down by inconsistency and needless experimentation without a true root to meaningful song for many of these tracks. Overall, the good tracks are good but surrounded by lack-luster.

I liked this album quite a bit more than I was expecting to! Had I looked at the year and genre, I probably could have figured out that I'd enjoy this, as there really isn't much 2010s alternative-dance stuff that I DON'T like. Honestly, I have never even heard of this band, which is interesting, considering my infatuation with said genre-decade combination. It was fun to discover something new! Like most albums in this space, it's not necessarily packed with a lot of revolutionary sound and depth (a lot of stuff in this space sounds the same across the many artists who dabble here), but it is certainly a fun listen!

3/5 fun music

I had a hard time hating this album but I couldn’t find a 👍 either. Kind of EDM Glam Punk. Will round up from a 2.5 to a 3⭐️

071223 18:57 3.5

3/5 it's fine

Toe tapper boopity boops

It’s sorta like indie-dance music. Idk Hoy Chip are fine on paper but I’m not a fan of the vocal styles.

An enjoyable listen, was nice to put on when reading.

After almost 800 albums, I finally found one enjoyable electronic album that was not included in the list only because of its importance in music history. Maybe it happened because the book author insisted on selecting so many electronic examples. Even a broken clock is correct two times a day. It's a 3.5 stars.

It has a few strongish synthpop moments, but a lot is just your basic disco/edm.

I like this. It's not brilliant or earth-shattering by any means, but it's definitely good. Feels like the LCD Soundsystem album we had, but a bit cuddlier and more mainstream, I think? Could probably do with a bit more edge, but it's a pleasant enough listen. 3/5.

Počúvateľné, okrem prvej skladby

Pretty catchy compared to these other kind of albums on the list. Probably the best of this genre on the list. We don’t need anymore.

motion sickness, flutes 3.5

As a more recent Hot Chip listener, I was pleasantly surprised by how experimental this felt relative to their usually poppy sound. The instrumentals reminded me of a few Holy Fuck tracks (big plus in my book), but with the vocals on top, this was still very much its own indie pop outing with a definite sense of personality. Do wish the LP was a bit stronger/memorable melodically, but it's going in my library for later relistens which has not been the case for 1001 picks as of late.

Solid. One of the few times I've seen a support band blow the headliners offstage, when they supported Goldfrapp. Flutes is an absolute tuuune and other very solid tracks are Motion Sickness and Where We Are. I don't fundamentally think they are an albums band, but this is a good listen. 3.5.

Electronica is in my bottom 5 genres, but this was palatable. I won't listen to it again, but I did manage to listen to it. Some of it was pretty.

Never would have picked this to listen to. It was fine, kinda background noise but nothing remarkable

This album comes out of a weird time where sounds of the 80s were being incorporated into indie pop to create upbeat danceable music. This album has some really interesting moments where I can hear various genres of 90s European electronic music forming the backbone of the songs while 80s synth plays on top. It's clear that Hot Chip have done their homework in that regard. However, the vocals along with some unimaginative melodic and lyrical lines really drag this album down. There are other albums in the 2010s the exemplify this style better.

This was inoffensive, but nothing grabbed me. I can think of other similar albums I like more

Not as much diversity as I'd have liked. Middle of the road album saved by a couple of good songs.

Not my favorite kind of music, but I can tell this is high quality stuff! I listened to it a few time through, but never got bored - there's so many unique sounds I didn't catch on the first listen.

It's fine. Pretty good at times. But something about it bugs me in a way that Drew Brees refusing to have that birthmark on his face removed bugs me. It's fine, it's his decision, but that should have been dealt with years ago.

I'm glad this group at least seems to have devoted listeners and is pretty unique. Still wouldn't have been my pick for an album from 2012, though I wouldn't expect the editors of this list to have the foresight/acumen to pick out something from Swans or Death Grips. The Alt-J album from 2012 or Lonerism blew up the alternative scene while having some mainstream staying power, and either one probably deserved a nod over this. 6/10

Enjoyed it! Aligns with other sounds I like with a unique twist.

I’ve repeatedly struggled to get along with electronica albums on this list, sometimes doing my best to give them a fair listen and research and other times dismissing them outright with a pithy kiss-off. Quirky magicians Hot Chip have a reputation of having fun with the genre, keeping themselves rooted in electronic experimentation while also appealing to 21st century hipsters under the dubious banner of indietronica (their following is skewed brilliantly in Peep Show’s “The Hat Game” scene… look it up). As something of an indie hipster myself, I was cautiously optimistic. And on balance, “In Our Heads” is a good record. It has a firmly melodic sensibility in its opening stretch (the more I progress through the list, the more I realise I value melody above almost anything else) with “Motion Sickness”, “How Do You Do” and “Don’t Deny Your Heart”. They’re all similarly structured- a build up of two-bar electronic loops, a pulsing, four-to-the-floor rhythm, a simple melody with direct lyrics, the occasional unpredictable chord change- but they’re enjoyable. Later, “Flutes” is a winningly ambitious, three-dimensional effort: the album’s centrepiece, it skips back and forth between backing vocal samples and lengthy instrumentals, with a fair few tempo switch-ups. It’s not all plain sailing. After a promising start, “These Chains” and “Night and Day” begin to lose me (with a toe-curlingly cringey rap derailing the latter… a bizarre choice for lead single). And when Hot Chip don’t feel like a poor man’s LCD Soundsystem, there’s a fair whiff of poor man’s Pet Shop Boys about the later tracks: an ironic po-faced attitude, self-consciously 80’s synths and pads, syrupy vocals (the underwhelming closer “Always Been Your Love” especially). Overall, I’ve enjoyed hearing Hot Chip’s contributions to the genre but they haven’t won me over entirely. Still, if they ever come up in a hat game in future at least I’ll be less likely to make a Mark Corrigan of myself.

Reminds me a lot of Chromeo but not funny. Look At Where We Are Today is definitely the best song on here, maybe because it’s slower. Flutes is good too. Overall, vocals are a little obnoxious to my ears. Maybe if I was dancing in a club or something, which I don’t do. But, it’s not bad really. I’ll do 3/5

This record feels like being in a coming of age film set in New York City

In Our Heads hurts a little thanks to its start, though that affords acceleration that keeps movement at the fore. Lively music in an idiom bound to be hit or miss, there's nothing jagged enough to be uncomfortable. I think my vinyl version of this came with incense sticks still unburnt.

Decent but forgettable beat based songs.

Decent 80s sounding but nothing special

Hot Chip gives us a dance tour-de-force that, while heady at times, would often bleed into one another after some time whilst retaining the songs' own personal touches. A bit too long for its own good but there is somewhat of a justification for the length. Favorites: Motion Sickness, How Do You Do?, These Chains, Night and Day, Let Me Be Him, Always Been Your Love.

Some songs were good & others were not. I like Hot Chip, bit not this album. 2.5 stars

Jemig wat een blijheid. Voor een keertje luisteren wel aanstekelijk, maar ook enigzins kriegelig makend, met die klinische zuurstokklanken.

Pleasant.

Synth-popalternative danceindietronica suave. Bien.

started off really strong but songs at the end were forgettable-3.5 stars

I remember a lot of fuss being made about Hot Chip - they were flavour of the month for a while . I remember them being very quirky and fun. I also like all the layering in the songs. I don’t know why I haven’t listened to them since, but I will try to remember that they are cool.

This is a 3.5, but on first listen and as it's not my bailiwick, I'm not ready to round up to the 4, but this was fun. Strangely Atari-esque in the keyboard sounds, but I appreciated the songcraft of the group — too often I find the Dance/EDM genre just finds a groove and rides it ad nauseam, but these guys had some good tunes crafted. It may rise in rating upon future listens, and as Marianne declared enthusiastic affection for the album, I'm guessing I might be hearing more of these guys in the near future.

I had a hard time forming a coherent opinion about this one. Some of the songs were pretty great, others took some interesting artistic swings that kind of missed the mark (but hey props for trying), while most of the others seemed kinda bland. My daughter bailed on this album 3 songs in because it was too '80s for her (and she likes '80s). It's a highly melodic album, which is a plus, and definitely old school, which worked on some songs. Unsure how I feel about it. Might have to revisit.

If you enjoy LCD Soundsystem, then you owe it to yourself to check out Hot Chip. The wave of indietronica in the 2000s meant a lot of fresh new approaches to indie pop/rock sound, in part thanks to the newfound accessibility of electronic music-making tools via the digital audio workstations. Hot Chip, being one of the better results, had a lot of the electronic beats of LCD Soundsystem while incorporating a softer side of indie. Results are pretty good! No bad tracks, but not many great tracks either. I think Hot Chip makes pretty safe music, but it will occasionally hit a sweet spot where it all falls into place.

I do have some time for this band thanks to some great individual tracks from their earlier catalogue. This one doesn't have as many stand out tunes as earlier hot chip albums but fairly consistent, unlike those. Might grow on me over time but for my initial two listens I was not bowled over

It's a nice album but definitely some filler here too

If you like Hot Chip this is a solid album that pretty much encapsulates their sound, at least as I know it. I'm ok on this band and thus ok on this album. Honestly nothing stood out to me as a banger.

Not my favourite genre. Hot Chip are alright at it though. Hmmm

This had a weird 80s or 90s vibe, like a chirpy New Order or something. I did enjoy the melodies and the quirkiness but I'd grow tired of it after a while I think.

A bit too squeaky clean for my electronic music taste. Hot Chip plays it very safe without going too crazy or experimenting with anything new. It makes for a few fun dances songs but quite a few are too slow for dancing and too upbeat to be ballads. 6/10

I think I prefer their first album. It's good but because of the repetitiveness of some of the best it becomes a bit of a slog towards the end.

I kind of liked Hot Chip in their heyday and went to see them in 2010. I wasn't really into them in an album sense, so I wasn't much into this. It's the vocal style that puts me off listening again - the music is great otherwise.

I don't like it as much as some of the other technos but it's OK

Hot Chip is undeniably one of the better indie/dance groups to emerge in the 2000s. Flutes is a great song and Joe Goddard has one of the smoothest, sweetest voices in all of Indiedom. If this album also featured Crap Kraft Dinner or Atomic Bomb (the William Onyeabor x Hot Chip collab) it would have gotten an extra star from me, but as it stands its still a pretty solid album.

Yeah, I mean... It's alright. Better than 90% of the electronic albums on this list. In fact, the first half is really good. But there's some BS on the back half that took the score down a few notches. Not bad overall, though.

It was alright. Some parts I liked, but not a lot of the album grabbed my attention. Not a lot to say. I liked the vocals. My favourite songs were Don't Deny Your Heart and Now There Is Nothing.

Pretty good UK dance electronica.

It's poppier than I thought it would be from an electronic album. Really really brings the energy. A couple of the songs reminds me of Denise Williams, which is a good thing. Interesting to listen to, but probably not too many times.

Starts really strong for me... Motion Sickness is definitely my favorite on this album. There's lots of other potential here... a danceable, electronic album that has occasional daft punk shades. Unfortunately, there's nothing that catches me as much as the first track and it blends together.

More low-key than their earlier efforts, but still some high moments to enjoy.

Whenever I see something is classified as "electronic music" I get a little scared that it's going to be a bunch of long, repetitious songs with no words. Fortunately this was a little different. They're actual songs, although there is definitely some repetition, some inorganic feeling to them, and it's a bit too long. But it's not bad. Still don't love it, but I also don't mind it. 2.5 stars rounding to 3.

This album was fine, danceable fun with an 80s sensibility. I am less a fan of the vocals, which range from just tolerable to just plain bad. Fave Songs: How Do You Do?, Look at Where We Are, Ends of the Earth, Motion Sickness, Now There Is Nothing

This was the very definition of innocuous music. Many different flavours, but all of them were really vanilla once the sprinkles fell off. I heard Heaven 17, Pet Shop Boys, New Order, even a bit of Reverend and the Makers as I listened. Nothing new, nothing really exciting, just pleasant and abstract reimagining of music that already existed. I kind of liked Flutes, but only because it stood out as being a bit different from the rest of the album. Synth Pop/ 80s-retro, no way can I see this as having any Dance music influences. Very middle of the road 3 stars because I didn't hate it but it didn't really do much for me.

very meh. as a band they've got enough for a really banging live set, but it never seems to have transposed in to album format.

The songs are good, but that’s it. They are just good.

Didn’t grab me.

Pop con sintetizadores. Ni fu ni fa.

Not my thing but it was poppy and easy

This was an interesting album. Shocked I’ve never listened to this band before since they’re pretty much in my moderne wheel house of indie and chill. The electronic mix was like taking the 90s club sounds but making it fun and adding lyrics. Which improves it immensely. A lot of 90s club music would be awesome with singing later over similar to this. This was a solid add to the collection and I’d revisit it. Now to listen to the rest of their discography to see how it stacks up. 7.3/10

Ikke det beste albumet fra 2012, laaangt ifra, og jeg digger ikke stemmen, men bra albumdramaturgi

Soild 2010s electronic album, deserves its place on this list.

Jag vill så gärna hata men de va actually helt heat

Pop con sintetizadores. Ni fu ni fa.

Synth-popalternative danceindietronica suave. Bien.

Fun and dancey, but also rather forgettable. It came and went without much impression on me.

Fun and dancey, I'd probably want a little bit more substance to pump it up a notch, but definitely a fun time.

well, this is awkward… I like some of these songs. I like other Hot Chip songs too, so yeah guess Im the odd man out here haha.

I like hot chip a lot but this isn’t a great album.

I generally like Hot Chip, though an entire album starts to feel repetitive.

This was fine, but never held my attention. It's a busy day, so it's not like this one had no competition. I have to rate these albums by how much they demanded my attention when I'm also trying not to lose my job. That's a steep hill. I'd be okay with this in the background again, but I'd probably rather put on a film score or something.

I thought I’d never heard Hot Chip before, but then my partner mentioned that she likes Ready For The Floor by them and I realised I know that song. It’s not on this album, but at least I can say I’m not going in completely unaware of the band! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Motion Sickness, How Do You Do I felt that this album started off very strong, but then my attention started to waver as it continued on. Perhaps the songs all sound slightly too similar, or perhaps the songs that I found catchiest were simply at the beginning. I did enjoy the overall sound - in my imagination, this is what it might sound like if a bunch of software engineers decided to form a band. Overall, I would say I enjoyed it, but I’m not sure that I’ll be returning to listen again.

Fun album

I liked this a lot. Except some of the singing. One of the vocalists kind of grates on me. But the record is good!

Well, my six year old approved. Not sure whether that’s good, or bad…

I don't know why but this album slip into an old iPod of mine and because of that I've listen to this one more than I should.

This was alright. At points it sounded dated, but at other times it was fine. "Flutes" was actually decent.

Just chill, vibing and at times, such a retro sounding album. Really enjoyed this one, 3. T3B 1. Motion Sickness 2. How Do You Do? 3. Let Me Be Him

In Our Heads is the fifth album by English electronic music (synthpop) band Hot Chip. Critical reviews were generally positive, calling this album the band's best so far. It was a fun, upbeat, and danceable album that has infectious grooves from start to finish. The talented vocals by Alexis Taylor were amazing too. However, I may be biased because I like electronic dance music. Great EDM album!

I enjoyed this and found a lot of the songs very catch!

Ist ok, irgendwie teilweise unplugged elektronische Musik

Faithless but no where near as good. Has some real solid 5 star songs but also alot of fluff

A fine album, only a few better songs, nothing that brings it up more than a 6/10 and that's where it lives in the cracks of ok land.

a kind of bloated and slightly less catchy version of LCD Soundsystem, but some good beats overall 3.5/5

It’s a great Hot Chip album. It’s a good album otherwise.

Ik rond het naar boven af, omdat het best prettige muziek was om tijdens het werk aan te hebben staan.

Ik vind dit wel verfrissend. Niet briljant, maar prima voor tussendoor.

Poppy and catchy, I dig it but don't love it. Close 4

I mean, i like hot chip, I’ve seen them live, and the music is good. But the album falls into irrelevance at large points.

i liked it

Lackluster

It's good. It's not as good as some earlier Hot Chip albums, as it lacks some of their weirder lyrical content - this feels a bit more tasteful and grown up, by which I mean a bit more boring! Still good though.

cool electronica but it got worse with every song, the first one is the best

I struggled with this. Halfway through I figured I’d give it a 3, but it actually took a downward turn for me from there. I guess this is one of the few so far where I’m pretty far below the global average.

Annoying

So lame. Falls just sort of being a 1. RYM: N Saved a song: N

Listening to this album feels like a circle of toddlers grouped together drooling on their Duplo Lego blocks, atop a color-blocked and faded rug. While nothing is noticeably offensive or harsh on the ears, nothing else is particularly impressive or memorable about this album. The stained-glass-like album cover is visually interesting and does a good job of representing the soundscape of the album. The instruments and progression feel very sanitized and clinical, and combined with the unimpactful vocals, each song was a drag to get through. Put together, I was left feeling bored and sleepy throughout the runtime, with no memorable or standout tracks to point at. I did not latch onto anything in particular, and I was disappointed by the end of its runtime. Actively listening to the project I would struggle to pick out any specific element that impresses me. I would not call it outright bad, though, just definitely not my flavor. I do not foresee myself revisiting this album, but I could actually see in the future my tastes shifting and this being my jam.

There was nothing to this album. Songs that I forgot as soon as they were over. I wouldn't call it bad just meaningless which is the best compliment I can muster. Maybe I expected something joyous or fun, this was neither.

This was just boring. A dance band trying to do grown up music without using guitars - they shouldn't have bothered

I’ve always found hot chip incredibly boring

Happy go lucky tunes, up and coming

I have never heard of them. Electronic music. No real instruments. The male vocalist is not good. The female vocalist is good. I guess it is music you can dance to. No song really stands out. Lots of the songs sound the same. Not very good. Two stars.

I haven’t liked what I’ve heard in the radio and this didn’t change my mind.

80s synth pop, but it feels like the life has been drained out of it and it just becomes...meh. I don't think having the voice bound between your ears, and the strange voice effects (see "Look At Where We Are") contributes to it in any positive way, either.

this was vaguely familiar and i’m not sure why. it was okay in parts

I found this album to just be boring. I don't want to be bored listening to music. Favorite Track - Ends of the Earth Least Favorite Track - Don't Deny Your Heart ⭐️⭐️

"English Electronic," shows up on this list quite often, dont you think?

Could see this being fine in the right setting, but it was a bit boring and long. 2.5/5 Probably won't listen again

Bland, inoffensive, and totally unmemorable: not qualities that make for an album you must hear before you die. There were faint whispers of hooks here and there but they're like a more modern and boring version of the Pet Shop Boys.

The electronic elements definitely added some interest, but it’s still early 2010s indie which is categorically not good.

This is silly indie synthpop. It can be fun, it can be tiring, it can be useless.

Ah ok, so this is what Hot Chip sounds like (and why I have no memory of it despite inevitably having heard them at some point). There are bits that are good here and there, and I like electronica as a genre quite a lot, so I have no problem with it from that angle. But this record isn't very surprising or interesting to me. Maybe I would prefer their earlier stuff? Wikipedia says they're influenced by Roxy Music and Royal Trux, which I'm kind of baffled by on the basis of this album alone. 2 stars

This one really didn't feel like anything special, I'm afraid.

It's a vibe. Upbeat, poppy, dancey. The lyrics make no sense.

Don’t know this band and this album. Another English band Im unfamiliar with. Synthy indie dance pop/rock. Very 80s-90s inspired electronic dance music. It’s fun. I don’t dislike it. Not sure I would really choose to listen to much of it again. But there are some songs that are less dance heavy I enjoyed. Look At Where We Are is great. As a whole, this feels like elevated pop music, with some heavy synth use. Weird one to rate. I like a lot of it, but kind of doesn’t stand out after a while. There’s certainly a defined sound here and it’s pretty interesting. Somewhere between a 2 and 3. Not my typical music, but it’s fun. One thing for me though, is this essential? Doesn’t seem like a must listen. Something from the early 2010s getting on this list but not a single Vampire Weekend album? The choices of music from 2000s-2010s is sometimes confusing.

Been meaning to listen to this one. Hot chip. Lie. Bisexual. Etc. Ok interesting sound. They kinda sound like that parody of 80s European music trying sound English. It's interesting. I'm not sure how I feel. Some gems but a lot of slop as well methinks. Yeah not all that. Favourite: Motion Sickness Least favourite: How Do You Do?

Saw electronica and expected a headache. Wasn't nearly as bad as I was anticipating. There was nothing here that grabbed my attention. Seemed to lose me pretty early during my listens. Felt this was kind of a slow and pretty boring. Wasn't anything obnoxious, like most electronica shit, but just nothing here that would bring me back to this album. 2

This is a pretty uninteresting synthpop record that comes across as a rather wannabe Pet Shop Boys. I didn't fine the music or vocals particularly engaging. Not something I'd bother to play again.

Mostly harmless. Instantly forgettable but not offensive.

New and never - new band, but never listen to again

Average. You can die without hearing this.

Didn't really catch my attention and went on really long.

Man ... the guy who made this list must have played a ton of GTA! Just because a song makes it on one of the most popular video games ever made, doesn't make it a great album. This one started out fine, but then I grew tired of it quickly.

I do not like this genre

2 - not the best

I don’t know what to say about this album.

I enjoyed the first song, the rest is bland forgettable stuff.

Review - Very surprised to see this here. It's not a bad album, but it's also not very good and not very interesting. The songs I remember from this band aren't here, and I didn't hear anything that stopped me in my tracks. Their songwriting is based around slowly building up with more and more layers, so I often found songs got good in the last 30+40 seconds which got tiring. I don't know if people need to hear a Hot Chip album, and if they do I doubt it's this one. Rating - 5/10 Need to hear? NO

593/1001 2026.04.15

Some pleasant sounds here and there, but I'm not into this genre at all.

I love hot chip so I was pleased to get to listen to this. It’s not one I’ve listened to before I don’t think and wasn’t my favourite although I did really enjoy ‘flutes’. I think as a band they deserve to be on here but not this album.

This made me want to listen to Erasure. So I did. 2.5

Not my scene

Shit chip more like

once again an album which has no meaning on this list

Blind album and artist. I thought the synth melodies were kinda cool but can't carry the album as a whole.

Highlights: Motion Sickness and Flutes

Pretty bad

One of those albums I should enjoy more, I typically enjoy albums that heavily use electronic components and blend it with indie rock. I heard moments that reminded me of LCD Soundsystem but without the same level of energy, other times where I was thinking Chromeo but not nearly as fun or smooth. It just never clicked for me and the mixing felt flat and the energy never felt to be anywhere near the level it needs to be. Also, often times the lyrics took me out of it with how lame they were, “Girl, let’s swing it, come on. I don’t got no ABBA, I don’t play no gabba, I like Zap not Zappa, so please quit your jobber jabber” ok dude… I thought I was being overly critical so I listened again and yea, this just isn’t good. 2 stars

No private session used for Spotify. Electronic music isn't normally my thing. I generally only like it there is something really interesting going on musically, there isn't anything going on that is interesting. It's bland as English cuisine. AI could have written all this crap, but it probably would have come up with more interesting lyrics. Excessive use of the word "baby" try using one of the computers you used to create this pile and look up synonyms for that word.

Dull. Sounds like the latest Kyle Sandilands discovery. I guess it’s good to make sure your skip button works. 1.5.

I've always had the thought that they spent too long listening to OMD. When they are good they are great such as Over and Over and Motion Sickness on this record. Other than that it is a bit samey. Pleasant but nothing exciting.

Once again, not a genre I really like or listen to. I don't hate this but it doesn't do a lot for me. I don't really consider this album or even this band "essential" listening, but maybe I'm just not British enough. I did actually see part of these guys' set at Bonnaroo but I remember almost nothing about it or them. In my defense, it was nearly 20 years ago. I liked "Look At Where We Are" OK, probably because it has discernible guitars. This would get 2.5 from me. It was OK.

The vibe is dance pop synth 80s, not the worst album I’ve ever heard, but I won’t listen to it again unless I have to

The microwave popcorn of music. Not very good and leaves you wishing for better popcorn.

idk what this is man

groovy but tortured

2.25. It isn’t as repetitive as some of the other synt/electronica on this list so far but it also doesn’t really feel like anything at all

This is enjoyable... but is the band friends with the author of the 1001 project?! Why is this here? "Enjoyable" isn't enough to be considered an albums I must listen to before I die. For reference, In Our Heads received *generally* positive reviews from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 79, based on 40 reviews. This is hardly high praise. And in England, their home country, this album only made it to #14 on the charts. Not that charts are everything (see The Velvet Underground as a counterexample) but in general, they usually say something worthwhile. I see that this was the #1 dance album in multiple countries, including the US. Maybe that's why it's here? But even as far as dance music goes, it's not special. It's good, but not great. It's enjoyable, but it doesn't belong here. 2 stars.

(3/7) music for retail shopping in a store that sells weird clothes

This album is fine, though it doesn't even include their banger "Over and Over". It's electronic music for people who are a tad scared to tackle anything that might be a bit more challenging. Fair enough, nothing wrong with that, but there's nothing on here that you need to hear before you die. There are hooks but nothing special; it's all easily digestible. No need for this to be on the list. Best Tracks: Motion Sickness; Look At Where We Are; Flutes

It was ok.

It was fine. Nothing I ever need to hear again. There’s much better Indie Rock music out there. It was kind of boring.

i dont mind it too much!

Now this is some synth noodling
