Reviews (page 9 of 13)

Bit too avant-garde for my tastes, but I hear the talent. Prefer “Mingus Ah Um”

Not sure what to make of this one. Quite a cacophony at some parts. As for jazz it is pretty interesting and definetly something I want to spend more time digging in and listening. This one needs some time to appreciate.

Don’t really care for jazz, but some of that was quite nice

Enjoyable. Sort of low rating because I would never really know the difference between good and great jazz music.

Good vibes for studying.

Well, that was a lot. The whole album moves like a parade falling down a staircase; graceful chaos, and horns clashing like they’re mad at each other. It’s dramatic, intense, and clearly smart as hell, but holy smokes, can someone let the piano breathe? It felt like every instrument was fighting for the last word in an argument. That said, I get why it's on the list. It’s a jazz opera on too much coffee. Glad it was short! Like me! Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Track A - Track C

Feels like you've gotta really invest the time into listening to this with intent. It's "experimental", but some how it feels foundational.

This was nice, but not really anything that excited me. It's less weird than some of the other jazz that's come up on this list. I could imagine this as a film score. Good background music, but didn't really make me feel anything

What an odd combination.

Good for what it is, and I'm sure a very important entry in its genre. Not my cup of tea, but not a bad listen.

Not my cup of tea.

Sehr jazzig 😅

bweeep

Jazz is nice but it needs more plays before I make up my mind.

Mingus is a genius. Just not my kind of genius. Feel bad about this rating

just not my favorite from mingus and i know there are way better jazz albums coming

frekar flókið. margar stefnur líta við. aðra? 3,5.

Musically interesting, but not too catchy or “important”

ok 7/10

I really don't get the insane hatred for jazz music but then again, I'm sure some people feel the same way about my deep, firey resentment for country music or pop punk. This was a fine album, I like a bit of jazz on an evening on the weekend with some nice wine and a comfy sofa. And this album definitely fits the mould for that. That being said, I'm not an expert in jazz, I really just put it on for background music when I want something smooth and inoffensive to play whilst I chill, and that's really all I know jazz for. Background music. But this is quite nice background music by any accord, so I'll give it a 3.

Pleasant jazz

Wasn’t bad. Jazz is new to me. Excited to get more. Probably worth a higher rating then I’m gonna give it.

Wouldn’t say this is bad but nothing resonated with me, could listen to this in background but wouldn’t actively choose it. Still hoping for a jazz album that will make sense to me.

THINKIN: Jazzy horns. PERSONALLY: Still not a Jazz guy but I love his hat. ALT TITLE: The Black Lady and the Sinner Saint

I enjoyed having this on as I was getting ready for work.

Good? Dunno but I didn’t hate it like most jazz

Some interesting stuff going on here and in part quite enjoyable.

Bingus

Groovy

I don't think I've ever heard of Charles Mingus before. Granted, I'm not very well versed when it comes to jazz music, so take that with a grain of salt. I haven't found a jazz album on this list that really resonates with me yet, but I'm hoping that this will be the first one! I didn't enjoy this in the way that I was hoping to, but this was still a fine album. I did enjoy the brass and reed instrument arrangements on this album, and this album felt to me as if those instruments were what drove the overall sound. The double bass playing was really good too, but my favorite part was the flute playing on Track C. That flute arrangement was absolutely fantastic, and I was delighted when it popped back up on the medley on the second side of the album. Other than that, I don't have much to say on this album, but it was a nice listening experience overall.

Lots of jazz. And I love jazz. But this jazz is a little stressful!

Lively.

Very unsettling jazz. It's different from your typical jazz records. But pretty cool.

-ok so this was a very interesting album bc no singing -idt i would relisten to it but it was interesting to listen to once -it had some funky random changes which surprised me sometimes

All that jazz. The morning commute wasn't a great spot to give this album what it probably needed. I'm not a jazz guy so this wasn't my cup of tea.

I don't like jazz. But I like the occasional avant garde music mixed with classical and folk. This is a record to listen concentrated and analyze all the elements that play there.

6/10 Funny one this, lots of contradictions. Old fashioned and avant garde Trumpet that was both silly and cool Really melodic and really difficult I liked it and didn’t like it Best: Track B

There were definitely a lot of ummm... choices... that were made

I like quite a bit of jazz. This isn't great for me. That's just a stylistic preference. It's a really good album. If you're into that kind of freeform music for the night and then it's perfect.

Verry artfull jazz album. If you have time enough to listen carefully, its wonderfull. Maybe somthing for specialists.

Enjoyed this. Reminded me a bit of some of the jazz in the Andy Griffith Show?

Torn on this album. This kind of jazz is not really my taste. All notes playing everything different. But in my mind this works great as a visual trip by just using the name of the album, song titles and music to fill in the blanks. If there was an accompanying film then I would be able to really appreciate it more. Another note is that there are some great rhythms in here that could be sampled.

mingus

not really my type of jazz but still nice

100% jazz

A little jazz is nice in the winter

Solid Jazz album. A bit disjointed at the start, but that’s kind of to be expected from jazz. The later songs made me feel like I was watching an old timey black & white detective movie, where the smoke show blonde walks in on the half drunk private eye pleading him to take her case then he mumbles something about not working for no dames before an inner monologue starts in about how he needs the money to pay off Franky Fingers or some shit. 🕵🏻‍♂️💃🥃

I can't stand Jazz...unfortunately (for me)...it was a bit of a torture to listen the full album...

Good but more jazzy than I like

I’m not a big fan of jazz

Jazz halt

Didn’t love it but certainly appreciated it.

I am surprised that I didn't know him as well as his contemporaries such as Duke Ellington, and Charlie Parker. Great album.

Still don't love jazz, but it was alright.

its good, but it's a little chaotic for me. perhaps with multiple listens it would settle in.

Not my thing but it was good for what it was

Not the biggest jazz fan BUT this was quite nice, especially the last track and knowing that it was composed for a ballet.

Not really my preferred style of jazz but interesting enough.

Always been a fan

Too much jazz for me

I think I've come to realise that jazz albums just aren't going to get above a 4. Sorry. This is good. Like experimental jazz good. But it's not so aligned with my own enjoyment buttons that I can really truly love it.

Aw hall nah prog jazz??

Blind album and artist. Didn't hate it. Want ecstatic about it. It's jazz to me.

The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady is an experimental jazz composition from the 60s. Interesting uses of the instruments here - for example, sometimes the brass sounds like it's trying to imitate speech or vocals. I didn't get a whole lot of mileage out of it, but it's clearly quite good.

dying elephant music

I'm a fan of most Jazz, but I'm not sure about Charles Mingus? The music is intense and unsettled me at times and made my brain feel crazily dizzy and confused that was on the brink of trying my patience. To listen to long tracks, I need to be in a proper state of mind and this free expressive jazz, though incredibly mesmerizing, had me feeling this music is way out of my league and I definitely don't understand it the way I should. Glad I listened and will be back after I educate myself with more jazz basics.

jazz. innocuo.

This is heavy music--there's a lot going on here, and I don't think this is a jazz album to drop in the middle of a broader range of styles and say, "Here, this one is one of the best." It may be, but it's for hardcore jazzheads. I think "Mingus Ah Um" or "Mingus Plays Piano" is better for the general listener to get familiar with Mingus. This would be better suited for "1001 Jazz Albums To Hear Before You Die." Great album? Probably. Over my head? Definitely. 3/5, just because our esteemed editors haven't read the room. Including this album is just pretentious or lazy; not sure which. 3⭐️

Jazz all sounds like one long elevator song to me. But this one was alright background.

I found this fairly compelling, as jazz goes. It's got a good chaotic energy that elevates it above background music and a broad range of sounds I wasn't expecting - sleazy downtown club vibes, vaudeville style flute, even flamenco guitar. Plus it seems there might be some kind of narrative that runs through it...? So, high marks for scope and ambition. For all that it's not something I can see myself revisiting.

not the biggest jazz fan but if i was listening to this and sipping a g+t at a bar, this would be a vibe

The Spanish guitar is very spicy. Wonderful music to work to. The horns are fierce too. Fav Track: Medley: Mode D-Trio and Group Dancers/Mode E-Single Solos and Group Dance/ModeF-Group and Solo Dance

220/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑

# Playlist track - Track A - Solo Dancer # Notes - This is hard to hear. It commands so much attention, and it keeps surprising you, bringing something new and changing course in the last minute. All the time! - You can either take that as a positive or a negative, but this is one hell of a ride. It was a bit exhausting to me, personally, especially the last track, that clocks out at almost 20 minutes. - An interesting experience, but one that I won't repeat soon.

Decent. Pleased I listened to it, I wouldn’t have done without your suggestion.

Experimental jazz that isn’t outright cacophonous. I probably owe this at least one more listen.

I like Jazz, love jazz, and this is supposed to be “the” greatest Jazz - but it left me feeling a little disjointed.

Considering I don’t really like jazz this was pretty nice. Especially liked the end of track C and the repeated motifs throughout the album.

Pretty enjoyable as a modern jazz album, not really sure why they chose this one over any of his others but not bad

Some wild jazz

a 3 1/2, pleasant listen that alludes mood and melancoly.

Not bad. I was picturing a bunch of ballerina doing there own interpretive dance to this and it being rather chaotic, while Lee Marvin runs around the stage in a panic dressed like a 1930s P.I. Come to think of it, I'd probably watch that movie.

I usually like jazz, but this just sounds like a bunch of noise

i'm not going to sit here and pretend like mr. mingus isn't extremely talented. this is clearly an expert musician with a well-honed craft. but once again we must return to how i personally felt about it. it felt like i was being chased by the physical manifestation of anxiety through a haunted forest. 40 minutes of stress. if that was the intention, he succeeded wildly. but for lil ol' me just trying to do my Spreadsheet Job, it was unpleasant. i did like the spanish guitar tho.

Like every great jazz album, it goes from moments of 5/5 to 1/5 at a second’s notice.

ZAH GUH !!!! This is probably his most traditional sounding record, but it is still so unique to jazz particularly when you think this is only 10 years after World War II. I can’t explain how why Mingus had such a profound effect on rock ‘n’ roll but He did and he still does.

Solid, probably sampled 1000 times

This is the brassiest brass to ever brass. Track c is my favorite. Chaotic and fast but great. The instruments sing in an almost human voice. Dagnabbit.

BLÖSER finds tönt mega mit dene schleppende blöser undem schnelle schlagzüg mitem bass track b het sochli atonali element (nenntmer das so? es tönt eifach amigs extra "falsch") take c chli wilder ala de rest bis jz tibiheitsch chani nöd mega vill dezue sege, ussert dass ichs eig easy gnosse han, wills au immer wieder öppis neus geh het, mengisch schön aber au sehr hüfig sehr unhinged

this flew way over my head. very discordant material, but purposefully, skillfully.

I appreciate the artistry, but there was too much chaos and dissonance for me to actually enjoy it as a whole.

Interesting. Not a huge jazz fan, but this seemed pretty experimental.

Solid jazz album.

Conjured up thoughts of strip clubs. Classy ones, not too seedy. All a bit much for a Monday morning.

7/10 Highlights Track C

The extraordinary musicianship on this can’t be denied but it has to be tempered by knowing that Mingus was a angry man, prone to violent outbursts. He once punched a fellow musician in the face so hard it permanently damaged their ability to play the trombone. His anger is reflected in the music here - aggressive hard bop with diversions into blues and classical guitar. Apparently this was originally written as a ballet which is something that I want to see.

Far out man! Bit OTT for me but some really enjoyable moments and they can play!

The opening to all 4 parts felt like the soundtrack to a noir detective film, the scene where the young PI discovers his love interest has been snatched up by a rival, likely an Italian named something like Alfonse who has a pencil moustache

Good slow paced, but deep jazz. The types that would play in a fancy NY rooftop in a movie. Probably a bit too busy to have just as background music, but great if you want to actually pay attention to it.

You can almost hear the smoke and sweat on this one.

Bastante bien.

I'm not much of a jazz person. This was better then i expected. Wasn't bad to have on. Probably won't listen to it again.

This was good, just not my cup of tea. It's not the album, it's me.

Loved this album

I like this ok but not in my top 5 Mingus records. Since you asked, they are (in no particular order): - Mingus ah um - Tijuana Moods - Charles Mingus Presents Charles Mingus - Blues & Roots - The Great Concert

Avant-garde jazz: some love it, some hate it, and some spend a lifetime trying to appreciate it (but do not love it). I belong to that last group.

Very good build-up, but at the apex it definitely does get a little too noisy for me.

4 tracks of very dynamic Jazz. I probably cannot appreciate it as much as it deserves. 6/10

A great jazz album - a little fluttery in places, but a good listen.

I assume this is good it's definitely an interesting lesson. I don't have the vocabulary to really appreciate it

I was not in the mood for this album at all Track C was amazing

Jazz club with a chilled vibe

Oh boy another jazz album! I still haven't figured out the appeal of jazz yet. It's not bad, but it is a lot. 5/10 Would I listen again? Probably not, sorry Dingus

It's certainly Jazz

The talent is obvious and overflowing. I just feel I'd just have to really want to get fully into jazz to truly feel the significance and history of this record.

Pre-listening thoughts: Ok so I know Charles Mingus from my American music class but all I know is he’s a jazz artist from the later jazz era (that sort of late 50s-early 60s pivot). I looked at the track list and 4 songs at 39 mins is WILD (this is mostly cause of Track D being 17 mins on its own 😭). Jazz is crazy bro. I’ve grown to appreciate jazz music (some of it! Some bebop still isn’t really for me lol) over the past few years so we’ll see if I enjoy this or not. Post/during listening thoughts: So while jazz has grown on me I still have a hard time listening to music without words. It’s like watching a black and white movie to me like it’s just missing something and in this case that is the instrument and poetry of the voice. Is this good? Absolutely. This is mixed really well, with lots of instrument variety and different song segments and improvisation that show off different musicians who played on this record. In terms of jazz this is as good as it gets. However, me personally, I'm not gonna jump to put this on in the car ride to work or to dance to or anything. It’s a little shocking how fast the tracks go by considering how long they are. I don’t ever feel the album dragging. Its a genuinely good album but jazz is still not my genre of choice 6.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: nah, but I’m sure some did Fav tracks: Tracks B&C Least fav tracks: n/a

This album was relaxing and easy to listen to. Not a jazz fan so wouldn't know a stellar jazz album.

Can’t stand songs that are long though. 12 minutes???

Second jazz album I’ve listened to from this list(and my entire life). Hard for me to rate but I thought this one was a bit better.

Parts of this are so off-putting that it’s 100% the jazz ppl think of when they say they don’t like jazz despite never having listened to jazz. A bunch of this just sounds like the worst kind of all night bender feels.

Really really good, unsurprisingly. Mingus is one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time.

Reminds me of the music in some old movies I like. Mostly bearable jazz!

I enjoyed quite a bit of it. There were some very fun and different sounds, but a lot of the time it just seemed a cacophony of noise. Too much going on at once, at least to my uncultured ear.

Not a bad jazz album. Very dark in parts and then interspersed with some kind of almost latin sounding guitar. Probably not one I'd revisit.

Wouldn't say its Charles Mingus' best, but an enjoyable listen none the less.

It's good, but I don't like all of it. Favorite song: track A solo dancer

Hard listen to jazz uninitiated. But I like the energy it transpires.

I would love to listen to this live. I would never listen to this again not-live.

I like Charles Mingus a lot, but this album was a little too "Swoozy," and I wasn't really into the classical guitar. So, it's definitely not a bad album, and I could see myself putting it on in the background, but it's definitely not a favorite or one I'm going to go back to often or really want to actively engage in, likely.

Experimental, Avant-Garde Jazz... So you know they're just making this shit up

Started out thinking it was frenetic and dated, ended thinking it was a cool, roll-neck-sweatered, Riviera boat-chase of a record.

The kind of experimental jazz that is too experimental for me. However, hella creative. I was biased towards a 3 instead of a 2 due to the inclusion of classical/flamenco guitars.

Very difficult to rate 1-5. A little too experimental to me, but still well executed.

This was cool, didn't blow my mind but wasn't bad.

Correcto

This is at the limit of jazz I enjoy to listen to, much prefer Davis or Coltrane, but I cannot deny the technical genius of Mingus, so understand how this made the list. 3/5

Jazz isn't my thing really. The album was OK, but I'm not clear what makes this considered a great album.

It's jazz. Obviously, they are talented but it's kind of hard to listen to.

Second Jazz standard over two days. Duke Ellington yesterday and Charles Mingus today. The only previous experience I’ve had with Mingus is Joni Mitchell’s collaboration with him on her album Mingus which I like very much. As. Regards this album was excited to listen in full. Wasn’t exactly disappointed but I think the jazziness of it all straying into very avant-garde jazz was a bit too much for my current level of jazz appreciation. I’m trying very hard to get into jazz but this album is not for the faint hearted and not one to dip your toes into the jazz canon. I think all the jazz buffs value this album very highly so I am guided by them to accept this is a very good album of its time and genre and grateful for the list to introduce me to Mingus. 3/5 18/6/24

evil trumpets

While I love most jazz, this album was interesting but not really my cup of tea.

I honestly try so hard to like jazz, but it's few and far between the jazz albums I can hear and actually enjoy. This had some juice moments but too few sadly.

I’m just not a big fan of jazz

I wish I could appreciate jazz more, but it rarely does a whole lot for me. This album was more of the same- enjoyable as background music, and this one has some unique sounds that got my attention, but just not my favorite style.

This was a quick lil listen. Lots of horns including that one from Jožin z Bážen…I feel like I don’t really know enough about jazz to know if this is good or not. I think I like percussion-forward jazz over horn-centric jazz?

This album is nice to have on as background music, the hats aren't as overpowering as normal jazz seems to have and it contains piano which I am a huge fan of.

I'm not well versed in jazz, so it's gonna take a few more listens for me to feel solid in my rating. But on first listen I really enjoyed this.

Sounds like the type of jazz going on in a 70s detective shows, with the lead narrating over the music about the crime they are getting ready to solve.

This was fine, but nothing extraordinary in terms of defining Jazz as an art form. Part of the album reminded me of the Taxi Driver score. The last track goes on forever.

This wasn't too bad. Kinda liked it as background music.

Quite the journey. LOVED the start but it dissolves into a bit too much randomness I think. Still a really interesting listen.

Jazzzz

Chaotic. At times dissonant, at times lyrical, but always interesting.

Jazz escapes me…

I really tried to listen and immerse myself but just still not appreciating the genre. I did appreciate this one and connect a little more than others before

I appreciate this as some good jazz music but jazz is something I only listen to on occasion. Have to me in the right mood I guess. But next time I'm feeling like some jazz maybe I'll explore more of Charels Mingus' work.

This was certainly lively! Lots going on. Appreciate the talent and the emotional chaos of this, but jazz has yet to find a special place in my heart. I could see this being a favorite of jazz fans though.

Beautiful, dark. Kind of haunting?

I may have to listen to this again. I really like Mingus, but felt that this was too far out there. Though there were parts that I really liked. Did not think it was the masterpiece that everyone else does. 3 stars for now.

I’m not sure if I understand this. A lot of noise. Some pleasing parts.

Favorite Track: Track C-Group Dancers

Fantastically chaotic

4 Tracks of very upbeat, high tempo Jazz. Gonna go on a limb and say that the other tracks aren't cleared for Spotify, but from what I heard, this deff leaves me wanting more. Update: apparently it's just 4 tracks?!? Added them all, would love this in LP form!

Enjoyable (particularly the second and third tracks) , but I don't know enough about jazz to fully appreciate it

I don’t have any frame of reference with jazz music to know how it fits into the bigger picture. Easy to listen or work to but nothing Id put back on if I had a choice. Rating: 3.1

It was ok. 2.5/5

Not a jazz fan

Really good overall and definitely unique listening experience, but not really my thing to go back and listen to

I dig this jazz. Was not expecting jazz when reading the artist's name. Thought it was some psychedelic solo 70s artist.

Adventurous and unsettling, definitely not for everyone. Interesting blend of loveliness and chaos. Fave Song: Track C – Group Dancers

High Quality Jazz! I had never heard of Charles Mingus before. It was a beautiful surprise! I liked!

It is decent background music, but it is no Miles Davis.

Trumpet both good and bad

I would really like to give this a 3.5 but I can't so imma give it a 3 because I didn't love the chaos. I really liked the piano and trombone but I felt that it felt kinda scattered and spastic in places and I didn't love that. The trumpet was cool at first but I kinda got over it after the first little bit. Other than those two things it was pretty groovy.

solo instrumentals were nice, but when they all played together it often felt jumbled. too many discordant notes. enjoyed the flamenco guitar featured in one piece. last track went on entirely too long.

Very interesting Jazz, fun instrumentation and interesting techniques and sounds. Pretty good!

Interesting. A good album.

good, but forgetable

Masters for 1963 year..

I don't listen to a lot of Jazz. Maybe Big Band Jazz (Sintra and such), but this style is foreign to me. This was good music that created an atmosphere. I can see myself enjoying this album again. Sounded like it could be a soundtrack or a movie score. This album generator finally has done what I was hoping it would do, turn my ears on to music that for whatever reason has passed me by.

Amazing melodies

I prefer my jazz either groovy or moody. This is neither. It’s a grand chaos, but rather unwelcoming. As if one stopped by a derailed party completely sober. Stay a bit and let the chaos seep into you, or follow your urge to move on.

lil too much going on for my tastes

Vinyl ?

3 stars because I'm not sure how to rate this (I don't listen to jazz)

Musically sound. Not my style but would be his background music

This music just gives me anxiety for some reason. Very talented musicians, but the sound is so frantic that I don't like it much.

Short album. Definitely need to be in the mood for it, but I liked it. Sounded kinda familiar.

only 40 minutes. Good Jazz jams. Some recognisable tunes

Expected Lorenzo Rating: 4

Not sure

Nice of them to include the soundtrack from Ed, Edd & Eddy on this project. Not my preferred jazz style to listen to. 6/10

I normally don't listen to jazz voluntarily. This was okay. It didn't annoy me and I was able to code to it fairly well. It wasn't jarring or distracting. I will try to give this album a few more listens to see how it grows on me.

I don’t listen to / know much about jazz but this was a very nice listen.

Pretty cool and unique jazz album and I don't think I'll hear something like that for a while

Very much jazz

More traditional jazz, very intricate instrument work but more difficult to get into a flow with it, enjoyed it in parts, especially the blues-y ending to Group dancers

As much as I enjoy Mingus, this one's difficult for me to access. Maybe if I listened several more times?

Day boi Mingus

I’m a simple man. I see the boi mingus, i’m happy.

Track A - a lot of fun Track B - somewhat less fun Track C - mental Mode D, E, F - not sure what is going on

I liked the blues sound combination of piano and sax.

Some pretty decent jazz that liked to add these weird, sinister, off-key sections that didn't always flow super well. Points for originality and overall brevity, but not my first choice when it comes to jazz.

This is one I have on vinyl

It pretty out there. I liked it

cool but not for me

Not something I'm likely to actively listen to, but it was fine in the background.

Good background music

Mingus was always just a name to me…now I know more about him after listening. I appreciate the effort and can understand why he’s a big jazzy deal but…maybe.

It’s Mingus, ya dingus! This one falls firmly into my “jazz=3” rule, since I’m too dumb to know any better, one way or another.

There's a lot of talent here and a lot of chaos. A lot of the album feels like an "everything, everywhere, all at once" ordeal. I'm not sure what the intention or design of the concept is, so maybe I'm missing something there, but, purely as a listening piece, it's a bit much sometimes. The piano and Spanish guitar interludes with the accents and highlights of the other jazz instruments are really special, though, and there's just a ton of talent across the board. Some more cohesion would be superb and really put this one at the top. Fav tracks: N/A, but movements 3-5 stand out more than the rest.

More jazz! This is very good but not my favourite genre. Listens: 1 Fave Track: ?

Jazz galore! These jazz album suggestions are not bad

One of the weirder / more intricate Jazz albums I’ve ever listened to. Find it a hard one to vibe with, but this probably is because it’s a more advanced album in the genre. Would be a good repeat listen in a few years.

Jazzyyy Cecilia

felt a bit manic and was definitely not good music to work to, but i appreciated the jazzy big band style with the longer form songs.

Quite enjoyed this one. Don't mind a little jazz and this was a good example of that genre. Liked the Spanish influence in the form of the Spanish guitar that was threaded through. Worthy of 3 stars.

Something to come back to. Typical jazz I struggle to appreciate now but hope to some day.

Love a bit of jazz.

Is this the album I heard and loved back in the early 2000s yet couldn't remember the title? We'll see. Perhaps, although I don't think so. It's an enjoyable album, and I was surprised to get into it with such ease. The latest jazz I've listened to really hasn't been my cup of tea but this is pretty accessible.

Ya like jazz?

Not my sort of music but definitely enjoyed and appreciated it

Not a big Jazz guy but enjoyed this thoroughly

Good music for Starbucks

Decent, but not really my thing and I didn't finish.

Cool jazz album but quite challenging at times

I love instrumental jazz, and Charles Mingus was cool as hell, but I like my jazz a little more melodic. This was fun, and there’s great moments in it, but sometimes it just wasn’t my groove. Respect the talent and musicianship, though.

Pretty similar to other jazz albums on this list for me.

It was pretty funky and I could feel the story but I think this would work a lot better paired w a visual art like film or dance or sum. I didn’t love it as just background music bc I don’t love the sound of the trombone(?) sometimes but it was pretty solid overall. Also realizing how much I love pacific time, I miss rating things at nine and being asleep at 9:15. 6/10

would've been more my style if it had a little more structure but loved the big band/new orleans jazz influences

I do enjoy avant-garde music but I believe context is required to get the most out of records like this. Unfortunately I don't understand the world this record comes from.

3.5/5 - I know nothing about jazz but this album sounded good to me

Track C and the Medley were phenomenal, but Tracks A and B didn't really stand out to me. I appreciate that the album gets better as it goes on, but it just didn't start very strong for me.

I like the way Track B started. The middle was too frenetic/cacophonous for my taste, but ended well. I like the blend of styles in Mode D: jazz, flamenco, back to jazz, and then on to an almost cabaret style. Track C reminded me of a smoky jazz club in the 60s. Probably my favorite track. Overall, I liked some of this album but each song got too loud and frenetic. There are only 4 tracks and each one did this. Seems overdone for my taste.

easy listen, but probably not something i'd revisit - 1 add

good work listen, enjoyable jazzy tunes

Jazz flamenco fushion!?!?

A good jazz album, I particularly liked Track C

Interesting and filmic

Good jazz! Coltrane and others are more appealing to me but I would listen again.

3 and a half star jazz

I really appreciate the idea of improv jazz, but it seems so difficult to execute with each instrument being so bold. These guys seemed to have much better cohesion when they sped up, but as the songs slowed down I started to feel disinterested in the dissonance. It got better toward the end. I think Track C and Medley: Mode D-Trio were a step above Tracks A and B. The easiest comparison to make is to John Coltrane, which was easily a start better than C. Mingus in my eyes.

This sounds like jazz music that would be the instrumentals in a 60s cartoon like Tom and Jerry. I can see how this falls into the "experimental big band" genre, because that was just stragiht improv for what seemed to be the whole album. It was a little difficult to listen to at times because there was no real flow to any of the songs while they were trying to figure each other out. Not a type of music I would go out of my way to search for, but it was a cool intro to improv jazz which I have to respect.

Avantgarde, Third Stream.

Disjointed and improv as only Mingus does it. 3.5/5

The arrangements throughout are a mish mash in a good way of jazz, classical, Spanish and African themes. It feels very improvised, something you may hear at a jazz club, quite nice as some background music. No best or worst as the entire album feels like a collective that should be treated as a whole.

You know how, in electronic music, it's building and building and building until the drop? I had no idea jazz could do that. Or sound like, when you turn down the next street, it'll be filled with opium dens. Fun, evocative music - tho not necessarily anything I'd seek out for future listens.

I find jazz so hard to listen to but this was really interesting. I couldn’t just put it on and chill though. This has to be an assignment.

There were some very fun and exciting parts, but it mostly felt like background music.

At times too cacophonous and grating on my ears. That guitar part at some point was a nice touch though.

fav songs: track b, track c incredible the emotion and drama that can be express through instrument. each song had its own beautiful moment

good jazz added to the list.

This was pretty chill. Reminds of jazz I heard as a kid

3.5, mozda 4

More frantic and noisy than Mingus Mingus Mingus. I wasn't in the mood

I'm not a jazz lover and was hesitant to give this a listen. But I really enjoyed it.

Not a jazzy person - this was good but not something think I’d go to on my own

some interesting stuff on here

Not a very enjoyable listening experience for the most part, to be honest. Maybe it’s not my kind of jazz. [0076/1001]

I listened to it while waiting for the doctor. Neutral.

I didn’t hate it, I didn’t love it. At the beginning I was disliking it, but by the end I enjoyed it. I think the last song was my favorite

Jazz. Niiiiiiiicccccccccccccceeeee.

Meget jazzy.

Ya like jazz? 6/10

I was enjoying this album until the second half. Moog Raga sounded like background music from a Muppets alien sketch. Triad was about trying to convince someone to be a part of a trouple (with possibly more to join later). And I just didn't like the last three songs.

Abstract, experimental, chaotic. One minute there will be a Spanish guitar solo and the next a ripping saxophone solo followed by mellow moments.

jazz that is actually fun. Cool bass and rapidly changing tempos. With spanish guitar too! Also, the fourth song makes me think of the taxi driver theme a lot

It's wrong to give Minugs a 2. So I need to at least do a 3. And the talent is there. But it didn't move me

Utterly bonkers. I still don't understand jazz. I like a spot of John Coltrane or Miles Davis but Charles Mingus is out there. Obviously great musicians but not completely for me.

jazz but idk, certainly weird

Amazing, amazing, amazing...if you like it. The amount of incredible musicianship on show here is incredible. However if you aren't into the genre or want to listen to something a bit easier with lyrics this isn't it

Nice but bass too low in mix. Another 'not my favourite album by this artist' pick!

busy sound. need to listen more

enjoyed more than a high school band concert. it might grow on me with more time. i don't know that i'll take the chance.

Terrific. A complex listen, right from the get-go. A type of darkness in those horns that is hard to find anywhere else. I am close to jazz-illiterate, and I’ve heard the legends of Mingus, but haven’t heard much firsthand. Worth more exploration. 3/5
