Does some fun stuff with stereo
Blind album and artist. Don't really have a lot to say except it's different than what I normally listen to.
While I enjoyed my time listening to this record, I didn’t like it as much compared to other jazz records of the time. Despite being only 4 songs, it feels a little bloated at points, especially when compared to other 4 track albums like a love supreme. All in all, I would give it a medium 3.
Didn't really listen much. Didn't fit the mood I was in.
Track A - it's jazzy. It had its moments, but overall, alright Track B - Track C - Track D - one long track. Kinda groovy in parts
Solid stuff.
Flows smoothly, albeit nothing stood out in particular. Uptempo without a lot of the "lulls" that can throw me when typically listening to jazz.
Jazz is jazz
Yay short album! The “blat” sound is wired. Need to listen to more instrumental jazz. Trumpet is not ready to give up.
Technically brilliant, audibly not my taste
Very Jazzy
Impressive but Jazz not my cup or tea.
Hard for me to get into a Jazz album. This one was ok.
Not a jazz fan, but some parts of this album were pretty cool. Favorite: last 1-2 minutes of track 1.
I can appreciate it but I'm too much of a philistine to fully enjoy it. I like the leitmotif though
I mean, better albums of this genre exist.
Jazz. All the notes. At once.
Really immersive and powerful. Not my favourite, and that might just be because I am not a huge Mingus fan, but the skill is obvious.
I fell in love with Mingus through Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus even though I'd get tired after my third mention of Mingus and skip the final two. The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady came later for me despite both records being cut in '63. That's just the way it used to go when you'd pick up an album or two of an artist with an immense back catalogue and you had no mentor in the genre or media to point out the discography. Yeah, this was a while back. Prehistoric times, a stone age daydream. Mingus has always tickled my ear though and this record didn't disappoint when I finally heard it. It's treat to hear it again today.
Good jazzy shit, nice and weird
Grew on me as it went. I liked the Spanish guitar parts.
Very nice horn harmonies. Definitely gets a little experimental at times but still cool.
Standard Genre 3 star rating
Decent in places, a bit labouring and annoying in others.
As jazz goes, it's one of the better ones.
Enjoyed it, makes me wonder how an album like this logistically gets put together but otherwise not much to add
I'm sorry but I can't abide jazz I'm sure this is a good example but, uurgh!
Jazz fucks
I liked the sounds like New Orleans jazz.
Jazzy
I like Jazz, but I don't think I know Jazz well enough to understand the greatness of this album, or why it stands out and needs to be on this list. Don't get me wrong, I thought it was a nice listening, but it just doesn't stand out particularly much. Having an almost 19 minute track also gets a bit tedious to be frank. I also think all tracks sounded VERY similar. Still, it sounds good for what Jazz is, so I guess I'll just put it in the middle?
Fun, but it feels a little messy.
Kind of ok
Considering I am not a massive Jazz enthusiast, this wasnt too bad. I probably wont listen to it again but I did regret it.
This was unreasonably busy
Not a huge jazz fan, but this was ok.
Like previous Jazz albums this was fine as background. I just don't think I like pure Jazz albums that much.
Pretty good classic ablum
Mingyyy
It's kinda like something they would play at a house of burlesque. I did enjoy it, though!
Jazzalbum. Nicht ganz groß, aber gut.
I... just don't know. This is extremely captivating and at the same time infuriatingly alienating. As someone who loves 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat', this is... something else.
Some truly great musical talent but too busy for my preference in jazz
I do enjoy jazz but this one was a bit off the rails at times for me. Impressive musicians but the compositions as a whole were ab it to crazy for my taste.
This falls into the experimental jazz category that I find too chaotic at times. Still brilliant jazz, just personally not my favorite.
Enjoyed it, amazing style and talent. But just not my preferred listening geenra.
Wish I could listen on vinyl! Diverse
Lovely old school jazz to start the week. Beautiful in that you could not predict where it was going to land
3/5
Swaying and sharp, with lots of great trumpet playing. Maybe too experimental for me, although it’s hardly free jazz or something. Could use more devoted listening.
not the mingus album i would pick but i havent heard a lot of his stuff favs: c and f
Not my preferred genre of music, but it wasn’t bad. I would have to be in a very specific mood to listen to it again
Interesting jazz
Enjoyable Jazz
This was really interesting. It never felt repetitive and still kept a continuity of style. I don't know what to think otherwise. I guess I like it, but we'll see if I ever come back to it.
Badaskaveebopbadabobajazz
Yeeash.....this is dark, unsettling and to be honest difficult jazz. Its hard not to admire the ambition but that doesn't mean I love it. Its hard to penetrate (no tunes!) So will just give it a standard 3.
I'll be honest. I'm not someone who can tell the difference between good jazz. At least not yet. I had listened to a Miles Davis album a couple of years ago, and this album was kind of like that album. Not terrible to listen to, but not great to listen to either. I usually like my music to eventually settle into a groove, and this doesn't do that. So, average rating I guess.
I love everything about this cover. I like the music. I don't remember it, but it was a good listen, no matter what.
I listened to this! But now I'm confusing it with the Thelonius Monk in my head. But I know I definitely preferred the Monk, so let's just hit that 3 star button.
Jazz; nice.
Not really my taste
Jazz. I feel like I'm not smart enough or good enough at music to "get" Jazz fully. I can admit that, so even though I don't necessarily like this album I feel obligated to give it 3 stars.
Pleasant listening. Top songs: none
Impressed with the composition of this album. The musicians play well and the albums theme is somewhat apparent, though ambiguous at times. Not really an album for me, but its not bad FAVORITE SONGS: - Track A - Solo Dancer 3/5
I'm not sure I was in the right frame of mind to hear this - I think it needs a proper listen.
Yas! Jazz! Very cowboy bebop. not the greatest for listening at work.
Lazy, sexy jazz that blows hot and cold, like a love affair. Just when you’re certain, the rug is pulled from under your feet, upending you and calling into question everything you thought you knew.
Probably a classic album if jazz is your thing
Eh. Not really my jam 😬
I listened to this and I just don’t get it, understanding jazz isn’t my forte and I’m working on a project and under pressure with a deadline so it was more of a passive listen than picking it apart, it was ok in the background not much made my ears perk up.
A difficult album. Took a few listens for me to warm to it. It's getting there but not quite there for me yet. 3 stars
good
Solid 3.5, I don’t listen to a lot of jazz and this was a good introduction and easy to digest
It feels like I am a true crime movie from the 50s when I listen to this
Pretty damn avant-garde, it feels like the music is going to explode into a million pieces at any minute
Leuke Jazz 3/5
On the album cover, there's a line that says "touch my beloved's thought while her world's affluence crumbles at my feet" and I don't know what that even means, but it is provocative! This is a skittish, almost frenzied at times, yet well paced album relying on full orchestral sets and simple instrumental solos. Only four tracks, I thought this one was good. Not the kind of jazz I strive to get into, though.
A nice album to have on in the background while working. It also gave me vibes of being in a smokey night club.
Interesting choice for a Mingus album. I admire this music more than dig it, but parts of it are fantastic. It's a real mood-piece. Sounds like it could be the soundtrack for a sleazy noir flick. I own two other Mingus albums (Ah Um and Pithecanthropus Erectus), both of which I prefer to this one. Ah Um has shorter pieces and the longer ones on PE hang together more and are less abstract than the extended tunes on this one. If I want avant garde big band stuff, I prefer Sun Ra. I dug the guitar work on this one, though. Very cool.
Not bad for a full jazz album, nice work.
Didn't think this was all that bad. Really crazy arrangements all throughout but generally enjoyable. 7/10.
Cool little jazz album, instrumental, very chilled out, just what you would expect, wasnt blown away by it. 5.5/10
As art, I dig it. As chill jazz to put on while I do dishes, not so much. The dissonance in some of the tracks was unsettling - at one point, I think in the first track, I had a physical reaction to it. I was inadvertently squirming in my seat and fidgeting. It was unsettling and uncomfortable, but I'm guessing that's the point. This kind of jazz is like the Picasso of the jazz world - you can't quite wrap your head around it. Where are the lines? Where's the perspective? Why would you do that with instruments? So just like Picasso, total respect for the art and the statement. But it doesn't mean that I want it hanging over my couch...
You need to be in a particular mindset to get into this immediately. Some passages are just too jagged. Of all the tracks, it was D and its extension to E and F that stood out.
Fun, freestyle-ey jazz. A bit more minor key than I'd listen to regularly
Very good, Different type of music I’m used listening too. Loved it
talented jazz musicians but too chaotic
Not really my thing but interesting enough 3/5
I like jazz
Lots of groove, lots of chaotic jazz, thankful it was a short album because if it were any longer, the rating would just keep going down.
Don't care much for jazz, but it was good jazz
I'm glad this project is helping me to really expand my horizons... I'll be honest, I thought the first track was not great and really put me off... but later on it's very listenable and I had a good time with it. I'm still not a jazz man so I'm never going to rate this too highly, but maybe I appreciate it a little bit more now.
Tricky to listen to as a person who has not had much exposure to experimental jazz.
A unique four part look into some solid unique jazz. Mingus makes this album feel like it’s four different pieces of a puzzle as it’s put together. The different instruments and tempos make this album feel like you’re always hearing something new. I found myself enjoying it and for jazz music would return to it. 6.7/10
This is not an easy listen and Mingus has much more accessible albums than this. Essentially it's a 40 minute long track made up of a number of movements within and you can hear a mix of styles as you make your way through from blues, Spanish classical guitar and straight up noir-ish jazz. Not just a story, but apparently a form of psychoanalysis for MIngus himself. Once again, this is not an easy listen - but it might just be worth sticking with. Best Tracks: Track B – Duet Solo Dancers [Hearts' Beat and Shades in Physical Embraces]; Track C – Group Dancers [(Soul Fusion) Freewoman and Oh, This Freedom's Slave Cries]
Pretty cool album, as jazz goes, this is pretty avant-garde. You need to listen with a different mindset to most albums on this list, since the interest comes through the instrumentation rather than vocals (which are completely absent)
Good, but not my bag
Listened to on 8/25/22 3.5/5 Favorite song: group dancers Good jazz album nothing spectacular
so. much. jazz. kinda found the latin influence in it interesting
Jazz contemporáneo. A veces un poco disonante.
Bit too swingy, has some crazy parts though
Not my first choice when reaching for a jazz album. Swank, hectic and obtuse sounds but not terrible. Definitely not chill jazz.
Nice jazz music, no doubt about it, but in comparison to the true big albums of the genre this one feels like a group of very talented musicians sprayed their talent all over the place. The result is nice, yes, but lacking the cohesion of the true greats.
A whacko. No doubt there are some impenetrable corners and unassailable walls for simpletons like me, but they're far outnumbered by an eccentricity and playful abandon that's only obtuse if you choose to let it be.
Improv jazz has always been a bit of a mystery to me. Listening to this I had an urge to take up smoking and to start hanging out with men in dark turtle neck sweaters. Parts of it sounded like a soundtrack from a swinging 60s movie. There is a lot of talent evident here but ultimately, it's not my bag baby.
I liked it!
As far as jazz goes, this is pretty good background music
Ambitious and impressive but hard for me to emotionally connect with. He’s obviously a talented musician.
Jazz with a story throughout.
I want to give this 5 points just for the name MINGUS. But it's experimental jazz, so 3/5.
Crazy shit Love a lot of it, gives me major Taxi Driver vibes. 3
It was ok. A little more chaotic in parts than the jazz I like
I feel like JK Simmon's character from Whiplash would wind down for the night listening to this exact album.
I really enjoyed this and I know it really good jazz. I wish I knew more about jazz and/or listened to more of it. It's like a black hole in my music knowledge. Although as a trumpet player I played it plenty and of course loved that.
I'm not the biggest jazz guy (although I used to love watching Tiny Boop Squig Shorterly and Roy Donk on the Colgate Comedy Hour). However, this was pretty cool. There was a bit much going on during some parts, but overall pretty nice. Quite a mix of styles. 3 stars.
I didn't even begin to get this until one time I listened to it up close on headphones. Even so, it's another one of those albums I admire from some distance rather than particularly like as such; orchestral/big band jazz has never been my thing at the best of times, and if I need a Mingus fix I'd much sooner go for Mingus Ah Um.
Pretty dense but pretty good.
Interesting
Good album, need more listens to appreciate it.
I mean, I like jazz, a lot, but this is a lot to take in. A little overwhelming.
Jazz, Free-Jazz, Big Band, Gute Musiker, Anstrengend, Etwas ziellos, Etwas langweilig
Free form jazz, or jazz that sounds free form, isn't something I enjoy. The fourth and last track on the album was my favourite. Didn't add.
I admire the brave vision of scale and structure in this album, but when it comes to jazz, I tend to like smaller arrangements where individual players are easier to isolate. I can definitely see this album working well as the soundtrack to an avant garde dance performance, as was the supposed intent, but it's not something that I'd really want to listen to on its own. I'm definitely more of a "Mingus Ah Um" fan.
Mingus? Dingus more like. This made my day worse. 👍
Kuuntelin vasta torstaiaamuna, niin olipas sopivan intensiivinen säestys Ukraina-uutisten lukemiselle. Ehkä vähän liian blast, että kotisohvalla noin muuten kuuntelisin, mutta livenä tämmöstä ois huikeeta seurata. Hienoja kyllä ne väleihin tippuvat rauhalliset melodiset hetket.
Pitäis varmaan kuunnella uudestaan. Ei kovin vaikeaa ja aika jees jazzia. Laitetaan 3/5
Instrumental jazz.
Not really into jazz but found this surprisingly engaging. 18 minutes is too long even for a wig out but i'd listen to more Mingus
I appreciate the ambition and artistry involved, but this was all too rich for my blood. I need to give Mingus a fairer shake. Just not with this album.
Only four (very long) songs. Still not my thing, but I can certainly appreciate the skill of the musicians involved.
I enjoyed it. At times it feels like a bridge between big band and cool jazz, like the former is melting and the latter is emerging.
Haven't had too much jazz yet. I enjoyed it.
In contrast
A fun improv jazz album that hits harder than most on this list so far. The Spanish influences and melodic echoes throughout the track (especially the anthemic closer) bring this one to a new level and give it a bit of staying power.
I didn't find this unbearable which is unusual because I despise almost all jazz music. Good background music for a nice quiet cafe or bar.
3.5
I can appreciate it but I wouldn't listen to it
This artist and album is completely new to me, though I'm somewhat comfortable with the genre. The baritone sax on track one put me off for the first 30 seconds but pretty soon I was grooving along to the darkness. I see what Track B was going for but to me it didn't quite get there. Track C starts so melancholy and downright pretty. I did not see the flamenco coming. I'm more or less hypnotized by the time the opening bass notes of the medley grab me and shake me back to my senses. The medley is a lot to take in, but for sure the feeling is delicious the times the melody resolves in the direction you want it to. I see the genius of these tracks. I am in awe of the musician's knowledge, confidence, and ability to play together to actually pull it off with such grace and power. This is next level stuff. That said, these tracks and emotions are best revisited sparingly and I don't really want to give them a home in my daily life. This album is no warm bubble bath, if you know what I mean.
This guy's wikipedia page is a wild ride, he sounds like he was an immature unbearable ass. The music is okay, but it's not something I would seek out. Mingus the Dingus indeed.
Enjoyed it
Invoked an Untouchables type vibe, slick.
Probably the best jazz album we've had so far - I just need a bit of structure and order to my jazz.
Chill jazz
OK, good music, but I'm not that into Jazz
Liked it until song 4, a little too erratic for me
Clearly skilled musicians, but I found it hard to consume. Do I like this kind of jazz? I don't know if I value the right things to.
I think I was spoiled after the last jazz album. This one is fine, but I found the brass section squeaky. I'm sure that was what they were going for on Track A and B but it was a bit much for me. Track C was marginally better. Track D was solid; I could've done with just that.
I think this is the most pure "jazz" I have ever listened to. It is - a bit tough. Not particularly smooth, but generally interesting. I do not care for it a ton halfway through, will see if the final two songs move me more. I have listened to them all a couple times now and it is growing on me a bit. I dont know how much I would want to listen to it, but I am starting to enjoy it more
I'm a big fan of Charles Mingus. For me, he is a pillar of jazz music. This album is...fine. I think my biggest issue is the recording of the tracks. The mix seems a bit off. These are songs that I would have loved to hear live, in order to give the whole album a fair shake. As is, the album sits in the good not great category for me.
Jazz. Eh.
A lot of this feels improvised, but apparently it is actually very deliberately arranged. This big observation probably belies my general ignorance about jazz music. As with other jazz we've encountered on the list so far, I enjoyed it but don't feel equipped to properly evaluate it. (This is somewhat true of a lot of non-rock related genres. And there is a relatively small amount of jazz on the list to compare and get acquainted with. Also none of it is recent jazz, which I find interesting. And then that got me thinking about the complete absence of classical music on the list, and I wondered what Mrs. hell-yeah thought about that.)
I liked this a lot more than I thought i would.
Pretty good sounds. I liked it.
Shouldn't have listened to it as a background for packing but overheard some great bits
Honestly liked it more than Coltrane. Would revisit
Songs: Track C
Not necessarily my usual listening but very melodic and talented playing by the band. A nice change.
hard to listen too. Maybe I'm not cultured enough
The arrangements throughout are a mish mash in a good way of jazz, classical, Spanish and African themes. It feels very improvised, something you may hear at a jazz club, quite nice as some background music. No best or worst as the entire album feels like a collective that should be treated as a whole.
Pretty good jazz album.
Fart trumpet at the beginnng... Is it me or does a lot of jazz sound like 4 guys got into a groove and don't know how to wrap it up?
The only Jazz album I've ever listened to. Not bad for background noise, but I doubt I'll be buying tickets to a jazz show anytime soon.
Listened to it for a bit but not the whole thing. Enjoyed what I made time to listened to.
Jazzy
Jazz with a 60's vibe.
Cool stuff, not sure I could listen to it as much other than background music but I liked it. Kind of all over the place saxes, sounded like movie music from the 60’s.
Feels like I’ve got a turtle neck on smoking a cigar and drinking wine with this one. Very particular mood but I’m into it.
Grandpa would've loved this!
🎷
Chaotic Jazz
Boa trilha sonora para Marvelous Mrs. Maisel
Schwere Kost!
Orchestra Jazz with drums, piano but without voice
Sounds interesting
This was pretty good - I don't really listen to jazz but I enjoyed this. He has a cool name too
I might listen to again if I came across it, but probably won’t go looking for it.

Something about this didn't work for me. Perhaps it's a horn / woodwind overdose. There are frequently one or more horns and woodwinds soloing concurrently and also having to compete with multiple horns / woodwinds blowing out the rhythm. This forces the soloists to go out on a tangent to be heard which exasperates the situation. I get that these are excellent musicians and I really like the few minutes where only one horn / woodwind is playing. I just find it a challenge to listen to most of it.
Sopivalla tempolla olevaa jatsia.
Feels more like a musical texture than a story. Has a general dreamy-nostalgic mood.
3/5
Part swagger, part migraine
Best of the jazz albums thus far
Not my thing.
Not really sure how to rate this tbh. I did genuinely enjoy it, but it’s a long form composition, not an album full of songs, so the re-listen value isn’t very high. I liked and appreciated it, but I can’t rate it too high.
amazing last name! reminded me of my eye doctors office, but overall wasn't that bad!
Enjoyable jazz album.
Free Jazz? Keine Ahnung, ich finds eher anstrengend.
Jazz man. Cool album name. I’m not sure I’ve just sat down and listened to a jazz album front to back, til now. I liked what I heard, but honestly it was bascially background music while I worked. As that it worked fine. Dave Brubek came up after this album was over and it felt much more accessable and re listenable for my tastes.
tbh not the best jazz i've hear lately but good
I appreciate the importance of jazz, especially from older times, but I don’t really love this type of jazz that much. I was quite impressed by the saxophonist, though!
Not my favorite but still good
okay...it's jazz. Not my cup of tea. I did listen to the entire record and was impressed with the orchestration and quality of the recording for the time period. Great sound on this album. A few interesting portions.
not quite my flavor of jazz but they're obviously talented
Very Jazz. The main riff gets very annoying about half way through the last track.
Instrumental Jazz good for what it is
Nice
Jazz in your face. Spontaneous, loud and a bit jarring in great ways.
Pretty smooth, favourite track: Medley.
@@@½. First jazz record listened. Some great stuff in there, but there's a lot going on at times.
groovy
Great to have on in the background
Frantic. But interesting.
It's jazzy.
Badass
Pretty cool. Probably wouldn't listen, but definitely appreciate. 2.8
Sehr entspannter Jazz!
Dynamic in pace and intensity Solo piano at the beginning of track 3 is very nice Inclusion of Spanish guitar also in track 3 is good Typically ‘jazz sounding’ but nothing very memorable
3 2,5
Jazz
Great album, just not really my style
Jazz, imponerende, flyvsk og samtidig stringent, vild bas, svingende
Unfortunately did not enjoy this one as much as the previous, but it was still interesting to listen to.
Big band music, not for me
This sounded like they just recorded a warmup session and no one was playing the same song for more than a few measures...
I had no idea our elementary school band was so good at experimental jazz fusion!
Not my favorite kind of jazz. 2/5
I found this interesting at times but over all I didn't really vibe with it and won't listen again.
I contain multitudes. I can recognize this is a cool album while also praying for it to end every second I'm listening. Two stars.
Way back in ye olden days of yore, I was part of the school orchestra, playing the double bass. And in my final year we had a new instructor, who would discuss music with us aside from what we were learning for the seasonal concert. When I told her I was dipping my toe into jazz, she brought me a burned CD of Charles Mingus. I don't know what happened to that CD since then, but boy am I happy that The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady didn't sound familiar. I know jazz has a tendency to wander off the beaten path, but holy hell did this album take it to the extreme. I can say that the tracks do actually sound like they belong on the same album, but in each song it goes so off the rails that trying to pay attention to it just leaves me with a headache. Not the worst I've ever heard, but it's definitely not for me.
got kinda tired of it tbh
Definitely had some redeeming qualities, but I was mostly just waiting for this one to end. There were too many sections that reminded me of my middle school band warming up before recitals. Just a cacophony of brass and woodwinds all doing their own thing to get into tune. I think I just don't like jazz...
Maybe I'm just a snob with my jazz and I'll only take the best
I liked it, but was welcoming the end during the last track. Jazz is great, until it isn't.
Jazz man... Not really my thing
first jazz album, not really my type of jam, will def revisit the genre though, saved 0/4
I only like some jazz….
There was a little too much going on in this for me.
Sometimes this type of jazz hits for me...and sometimes it doesn't. Maybe it's the heavy use of brass and the various dissonance, but I just wasn't feeling this one. Not bad, but not for me.
Jazz really isn't for me. A bunch of annoying noises mashed together for nearly 40 minutes doesn't make for an enjoyable listen. 1.5/5.
Good to listen to if you want to get some work done. I appreciate it for what it is, but I'm unlikely to listen again.
Listening to this with context of a "ballet" definitely makes it logical in the style. Does it mean that I like it? No. Can I appreciate it for what it is? Sure.
🪢a🪭 ★★
First song sounds like a downtown intersection at rush hour and someone is gridlocking and everyone is laying on their horns. Definitely unpleasant. Track B is better at the beginning at least- it’s more melodic but then reverts back to rando noodling. Track C is fairly chill…..there’s a nice Spanish turnaround- then a big blurpy intersection again- I mean- it’s what is this? And track D is just like the rest only longer. Ok. I just hate this kind of wanky jazz. More normal jazz is fine. Wanky jazz, of which this is a prime example, is shite. It doesn’t swing, it doesn’t groove, it just makes you think “man, I’d really hate to be a traffic cop!” TWO STARS
I can appreciate this is good but I found it boring
Not my type of jazz, but very good.
Too frantic for me.
Stress
Highlights: 2.6
I'm not a modern jazz fan. I know this as one of the greats and my personal failing is that I don't like it. I'm not sure where to go from there. High repetition means I like it even less. I'm going to give it a 2 because I can hear the skill of the artists. Some of the early 3 songs are great a portion of the way through, and then fall off the rails for me.
I’m sure this is amazing … if you love jazz.
never has an album name and artist name been so mismatched in coolness
i down't like him. I down't like him b/c i like when people sing not instrument and not his tipe
pretty sad and slow to me so i dont really like it i wouldnt recommend to others.
It was okay.
I'm starting to think I like the idea of jazz more than I like jazz. Every jazz album I've gotten from this list has been 1-2 hours, 3 tracks. That said, I enjoyed all 4 tracks seperately, but not the album.
ambient album good to study to but not my vibe
I knew I was going to have a tough time with jazz.
good
“I've always thought I hated jazz, maybe I was wrong. Maybe it's great to hear all the notes at once”
legendary jazz musician of his time as well
The slow buildups pushed my tolerance on this one. I kept saying, "ok, let's get this song going", and then they get stuck on the same riffs and progressions for what feels like 10-20 measures too long. I understand that jazz is meant to be experimental and allow for the creative nature of each instrument to come out, but this one was just a bit too unstructured for my tastes. I also didn't care for the squeaky sax and trumpets, nor the heavy bari/bass sax lines behind everything.
Taas tämmöstä perus jazzia eikä vaan lähe oikein missään tilanteessa
Nojoo...
I have never even heard the name Charles Mingus and I am only scratching the surface with any knowledge of jazz. Actually my biggest exposure to jazz music is from this project where I have listened to Herbie Hancock, Sarah Vaughn, Count Basie, Dave Brubeck and Frank Sinatra (though he seems less "jazzy" than all of the others to my untrained ears). I have definitely liked some of it. I even liked every song on Herbie Hancock's album called "Head Hunters" and so gave it a 5 star review. So I've got my jazz training wheels on I guess. Thoughts after listening to this 3 times... On the first song I started thinking - wow some of this reminds me of Radiohead - especially songs like "National Anthem" on the Kid A album. I looked it up and sure enough Radiohead members discuss that they have definitely been inspired by jazz artists and specifically mention Charles Mingus! And apparently lots of modern jazz artists have covered Radiohead songs - because they see the similarities. Did not know that. I love finding connections like that - especially since Radiohead is one of my favorite artists. After repeated listens, I'll admit I had a hard time getting into all of this. It feels almost too random and cacophonous for me. I did end up liking the first song - so I will hear this on my playlists. Maybe this will grow on me more after I hear that track more over time. It's also the shortest song on this album - so does not require as much investment in it when it does play. Liked songs on Spotify: 1/4 Rating: 2/5
It feels too messy somehow. I think this is the jazz I don’t “get”
Dont like jazz
Jazz album. I’m sure this is wonderful but it just isn’t my type of music. It’s getting a two but not cause it’s bad but because I don’t like jazz.
Not my typa jazz . Honestly jarring . Can respect the talent tho
There's certain types of art that I can appreciate the talent, but also recognise that it's not for me. Would have made for an entertaining film score, but it wasn't compelling enough for me to listen to in isolation
I appreciate the overall premise but I didn't connect strongly with this on the first listen. I confess I listened to it only in my car which doesn't hlave the greatest bass fidelity
Musica bien hecha, no es algo q escucharia nienpedo
I didn’t weally wike it vewy much
I STILL FEAR THE JAZZ
i’m not a jazz hater by any means but i don’t care about it enough to sit through an entire album without lyrics. i do like a lot of kinds of jazz when they have interesting lyrics but not when it’s almost 40 minutes
It sounds creative, but like most jazz, it just goes on too long and is too chaotic for my taste.
I just dont love jazz that much
Non ce la faccio.
3/10
Jeg forstår mig ikke rigtig på det
ill composed noise
My snap reaction was to give this a 1. The relief i felt when I paused the last track halfway through made me realize I was listening to nothing but noise. But alas, I actually enjoy jazz. I even have enjoyed most of the Mingus I've heard so far. This album just isn't doing it for me. I know that it probably requires multiple listens, and I just don't have the time for that right now.
Previously unknown. Too chaotic for me.
Not the biggest jazz fan, I got kinda fed up but I still respect it
OK. Mingus : one of the greats. Jazz: ok, I'll give some time to Sun Ra and the Free Jazz world. The Black Saint... : Highly regarded. Let's launch in. OK, that's a Nope from me.
Meh compared to other jazz it's mid IMO, 2.5
ok
Demasiado ruidoso para mi gusto.
More background jazz. It all sounds so similar. It’s not bad per se it just doesn’t move the musical needle for me at all.
I can only listen to jazz type stuff for a little bit. But my favorite music.
