Yes, I'd liek to listen thjis a lot more. butnif its too slow for you, ...skip to track #9 - "back to life, back to reality" a track to a put a smile on everyones face, make you dance, and evoke youthful euphoria - clubland circa 1992 I think.. Ah, a joy to be reminded. ... classy stylish sound.
Seminal R&B album.
Back to life
Thoroughly enjoyed. A good find. Some heard before, some worth discovering. 4 stars plus bonus 1 for rediscovery credits.
Loved this.
This appearance of this one excited me. I didn't enjoy it quite as much as I thought that I would, but it was a great feel of college times for me. So, it gets credit for that.
A solid late 80s hip-hop groove. Loved it.
Aka Keep on Movin here in the colonies. I wore this thing out during college. Haven’t listened to it in many years, until now, and it is still a near perfect album.
Absolute classic
Absolutely outstanding 11/10. Every song was so unique and incredible to listen to.
Balancing out the one because they had one really sick song
Groovy
This is like KAYTRANADA before KAYTRANADA existed. "Back to Life" will always be a banger. The whole album is seamless.
Certified classic
Que álbum sensacional! Vontade de ouvir o dia todo ahahaha
Soul muy animado. Un megahit. Vinilo.
Soul muy animado. Un megahit.
Very groovy, reminds me of GTA SA for some reason.
Grooving grooving like a snake on the dance floor
Solid jam.
"Nice, nice, nice- wait they made that song??"
outstanding rnb project, very recommended
Funky, old school, R&B dance. It was fun!
this was an eclectic album where there really wasn’t a cohesive piece. kind of felt like a bunch of random singles put together but each song was pretty good on its own
Yes to this. Female vocals preferred over the male, but mostly I likey. African Dance got saved..that flute.
Good beats. Back to Life and Keep On Moving take me back and are solid singles. Feeling like I need to be a little more generous with my ratings after seeing that I’m a “Perfectionist” rater, LOL (4)
Solid album, solid grooves. Some true club classics. Does exactly what it says on the tin.
I thought it was good
Some absolute classics in here that I know and love and had no idea where they came from - they were just part of the sonic landscape and permeated everywhere. It's cool to find the source.
There are those albums that when you see it’s an anniversary release or a remastered release you immediately run for the Wiki so you can see the original track release so that you can bail early if the album sucks. And then there’s albums like this one where are the extra tracks are still not enough to satisfy you. An eclectic mix of music styles, smooth vocals, and a general feel good vibe that leaves you wanting to cue it up for a second listen. Good stuff here.
I'm flipflopping between 3 and 4. Just good solid club rhythms. I miss this being the soundtrack to pop culture.
Why is this getting so much hate - fun easy listening. Love hearing the English voices against a classically American hip-hop sound.
Got respect them for calling their debut album Club Classics Vol. One. But it lives up to its name, this album is club banger after banger. Great beats, crisp production and smooth vocals.
Bel ritmo, chill, musica da bar la mattina alle 7:99
incrivelmente bom. coisas novas e boas estão sendo de muito bom agrado
4/5
chill house music from the uk. say what you will about the brits but they sure know how to make good electronic music when they want to. carefree and real laid-back, this album is a good representation of nightclub music right at the tail end of the '80s. with a lot of these dance tracks, sometimes the vocals make it, sometimes the vocals break it. i feel like some of these tracks would hit more if they didn't have vocals, but maybe that's just me. another record that ideally should be in rotation at the coolest parties, both public and private.
Nice and housey
Nice but why are they forcing me to listen to a singular song 3 times? Enjoyable enough. Low 4
Pretty enjoyable
Super fun listen. More interesting layers and progressions than I expected
Ah nice...like balm for my soul. Funky, laid back, smooth. Had me grooving and dancing the whole time. A lot of people complaining about this album, but does everything have to be so serious all the time? Can't we have something light to just vibe to every once in a while? I really liked it.
Good stuff to groove to. Solid 4 Stars.
Really cooool. Enjoyed it A LOT
Plenty of good stuff.
Real fun, not what I would have gone out to listen to
This was a lesson in not judging a book by it's cover. When I first pulled this and saw it was R&B, I thought it was going to be something I don't like that will be a chore to get through, but I actually enjoyed it a lot. This is very much on the funk side of R&B and I have been really getting into funk recently. Favorite Track - African Dance Least Favorite Track - Feeling Free ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Rap, R&B, Soul
Not everything was for me, but it was interesting throughout, and Back to Life is pretty nostalgic
Vibey, really enjoy keeping this as background music.
This surprised me. Not normally the kind of thing I'm into, but it's got a freshness to it.
Fun! Liked this.
Mich better than I thought it would be tbf
73/100. It is the definitive soundtrack for anyone who wants to look cool while walking down the street. The blend of dance-pop and deep soul is incredibly groovy and it effectively captures the heartbeat of the late eighties London club scene. From the iconic breakbeats to the velvet vocals, it is a record that practically begs you to get up and move
I had so much fum listening to this, really grand album that makes you proud to be British
Some fun soul but as an album a little odd
It’s uneven, certainly. But Back to Life is pretty damn great all these years later. Some skips but otherwise quite enjoyable
Actual Rating: 3.5/5
I think this was a good precursor to the rise of 90's club dance music. The blueprint is there but it hadnt quite been fleshed out. Its pretty predictable in its beats, almost as if it was meant to be played front to back, and the songs inbetween the hits were just there to help you coast along as the album played out. You can see which songs got more love, Back To Life being a good example.
reminds me of persona pretty peak
Don't usually like dance music but this was very good
Fun! I love anything with a beat that isn't annoying or boring. Checks those boxes easily.

Ok
Definitely a classic 😎🔥
Have you ever had an album that you just didn’t feel cool enough to listen to? That’s how I felt listening to this one. There were so many tracks on here that felt like I was in an exclusive club and should’ve been drinking a martini wearing a high-end suit talking to some girl that was so far out of my league. Instead, I realize that I was almost 50-year-old male sitting in a Man Cave listening to this music on an old stereo. This album was pretty freaking good. The only song I recognized on here was Back to Life. At first, I wasn’t sure whether this was a set of originals, or DJ remix. But kind of felt like all of the above. Honestly, if felt like an homage to black culture’s historical influence on pop music from its African roots and Spirituals (eg, Keep On Movin’), through jazz, rap and R&B. African Dance had a really cool vibe, and Jazzie‘s Groove and Feel Free at really fun bass lines to it. Ambition was smooth rap flow reminiscent of the Golden Age. I may not have been cool enough for the club, but I’m definitely cool enough to sneak in the back door with my headphones! If half-points were allowed I’d rank this one 3.5-4.
BANGERRR hørt masse på back to life Beste sang: Back to life
Good liked it very very much adding it to my favourite the rhythm is just perfect the songs are a little long but it’s okay
Really enjoyed listening to this one. A bit repetitive but nice for a change of pace.
4- Stars (10/15)
Such a great turn of the decade (80s into 90s!) album! Perfect midway between the sophisticated soulful soft-jazz sounds of Sade and the early 90s club bangers, with a little Gen X angst peppered in!
Ah, good memories here. “Back to Life” and “Keep On Movin’” are classics. The whole album holds up for me - warm, jazzy, great production, early house beats, some incredible vocals from Caron Wheeler. A sweet time.
Yeah, this is pretty decent. Lots of good stuff to listen to and I enjoyed the general vibe. At its best when there's a female vocal at the mic of course, but the laid back nature of most of this was nice. I'd listen again for sure.
Soup II Soul so influential to the whole scene this album has some great tracks on it
Never listened to this album as a whole before. It's actually a really progressive post-diasporic collage. Impressive. Not sure what happened to Soul II Soul after this but something has been missing ever since (Nellee Hooper?). Certainly Jazzie B's output has never reached these heights...
This is a nice first suggestion, i only knew of the hits from this album. Nice percussion, but the claps get repetitive
Un 3.8 pero le regalo un 4 porque lo disfrute bastante, banco que nos salgan álbumes de dance. Algunas son ya muy discoteca o muy de ambiente como para escuchar en el dia a dia tho Favs: las 3 primeras
4.5
Fun and different
I absolutely love the beats on this album, and the fact that they are sourced from so many different genres make it even better. It makes for an intriguing listen and I can't help but enjoy the vibes throughout. The hooks are catchy, the vocals are soulful and the beats get the head bobbing. What more can you ask for?
Luhhhh this one. It’d be a FIVE if it werent just a collab album. Gotta be soul 2 soul, not flesh 2 flesh. FOUR!
Love this album. Classic songs
Not my thing but I liked it
groooooooves. Ah well, back to life, back to reality.
Another one of the British clubby entries on this list whose importance I’m sure is more obvious there than it is here, but I enjoyed this very much. Fav tracks: African Dance; Back To Life; Jazzie’s Groove
car album from the 80s
Overall 6/10: Very good soul and funk album. Good D&B, some absolute vibes. Surprising variety in styles contained in one album. There were a couple stinky songs, but the majority is good. The remixes are absolute bangers. Track 1 - Keep on Movin' - Very chill, simple lyrics, great piano back tracking and a wonderful drum and bass solo around 4:30 Track 2 - Fairplay - Forgettable, deharmonized voice and melody Track 3 - Holdin' On - Fun clubby song, great upbeat song Track 4 - Feeling Free - Live from Westside Studios, United Kingdom/1989 - Beach vibes, early rap style vocals Track 5 - African Dance - Very chill, has great flute; minimal lyrics Track 6 - Dance - This song is a bop feels like a modern Trance song Track 7 - Feel Free - Pretty good, a little long Track 8 - Happiness - Dub - Backing melody and piano chorus is such a vibe Track 9 - Back to Life - Amazing vocals Track 10 - Jazzie's Groove - Fantastic transition into this song from Back to Life, very chill song Track 11 - Ambition (Rap) - Old school rap, great beat sample with good trumpet sample. Track 12 - Keep on Movin' - Big Beat Accapella - Forgettable but enjoyable Track 13 - Back to Life (However Do You Want Me) - Amazing remix of the original, the beat is so catchy; makes me want to head bob Track 14 - Jazzie's Groove (Piano Version) - 10/10 intro, amazing drums & bass, very funky Track 15 - Back to Life (However Do You Want Me) - One World Remix - Not as strong as the other remixes. Definitely Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles vibes Track 16 - Keep on Movin' - M Beat Bonus Mix - Would go hard with a drift edit or when playing Gran Turismo
Good!
Good times.
Fun
Really liked this. Sometimes really laid back and smooth and other times just really makes me wish I could've been in a club in the '80s. What a time! A true gem <3
This was great. So funky and londony big fan. fav = African Dance
Wow, that was a weirdly cathartic experience. This album was the scene of my first childhood (14yrs) musical trauma of spending hard earned paper round money on an album, off the back of one single (Back to life), and absolutely hating it. The crushing disappointment was hard, leading to years of solid risk averse album purchases. Seeing this album today therefore gave me the fear somewhat. But hey, how musical tastes can change! While I still despise ‘Keep on movin’, and the vocal performance on ‘Holdin’ on’ is about as bad as anything on this list. It’s actually a really nice album, flavours of early house, funk, soul bringing a nice variety and flow. Some real bangers on here, obvs including the aforementioned Back to Life, and the flute on African Dance is sweet. It’s clearly an ‘influential’ album on a few future scenes. So, well played my 14yr old self, you were actually a musical visionary but just 36yrs ahead of your own musical tastes. Trauma begone!
Really liked.
Funky songs with African vibes. Pretty good.
Spawned so many dance classics
Lot of bangers on here. Listened to this in the early AM hours wandering around my neighborhood. Was a great time and the music undoubtedly helped
Not to give away too much about my demographic but I grew up loving Streets of Rage for Sega Genesis and my mom was a step aerobics instructor in the early 90s. This music was part of my DNA before I was even able to know the artists and titles.
A great start to the generator. This is an album I would never have selected on my own. My preconceived ideas were all the way wrong. Almost sounds like trip-hop. Loving it.
Smooth, soulful, jazzy.
3.5/5 - Smooth and vibey; maybe early Trance -Solid music for the dancehall or headphones working in the library. - Full of Soul and that fawnk - Solid effort and some good work, but this is a tape that is best fit for the background noise to living.
When it's good, it's great. It's the London warehouse dance scene captured on record. It can sound dated, but in a retro way. The mix of piano, strings, beats etc are top-notch. There's a couple of slower and less successful numbers which border on bland, but they aren't enough to drag a very fine album down (especially Back to Life and Keep on Movin', two all time classics).
I only listened briefly!
I was surprised how much I liked some of this. Definitely a period piece but when it all comes together (especially when the lead vocals are on the money) it's pretty great.
Me sacó de mi zona de confort y me re divertí. Posta me gustó mucho, sentía el flow mientras lo escuchaba
really great!
From the title I expected some house stuff. I would've not enjoyed that at all. Listening to the thing now and I'm pleasantly surprised by the groovy, organically sampled sound. It's nice for the background - and that's a positive assessment here.
Really cool. Just as soon as you've had your fill of the buttery pipes of Charlotte Kelly you start getting a heavy dose of Jazzie B and his disaffected-yet-soulful rapping. It's on his tracks where the album really starts to feel like the UK twin of A Tribe Called Quest (something I'd never have thought to look for) - I find it interesting that this released the same year as Low End Theory. I bet they hung out. And if it's possible to get sick of both of the leads before the album's end, there are some very vibey instrumentals like African Dance. And if you then get sick of that too, you can go fuck yourself. High 4*.
Danced through
Okay - not all cuts were great
First thoughts, I like the vibe and beat.
Classic
I knew a few songs, but this album was great
Nice bouncy soul like club music
Classic of its time and still sounds relevant today. Cuts some mean grooves
Some smooth 90's club house cuts in here and I'm here for it. All the stuff I want to hear when I'm immersing in 80's or 90's house.. big percussive piano chords, organ tones, belting divas on the mic, flute solos being ripped, and programmed 4/4 boots and pans on the beat. This is a chill, good time and includes some classic 90's club house bangers, taking me back to some of my first memories of the genre when it started getting radio play. The singles aside, it also features a robust palette of aesthetics within the aesthetic cannon of that era. Damn do I love this genre in this era. It's music just made to dance forever to. The vocals usually range from a diva raised on gospel just going beast mode in the booth on a hook to spoken word male vocals ranging from awkward rhyming schemes to outsider rap verses. In other words, 90's house figured out a formula on how to capture a vibe and milked the shit out of it during this period. Still gets me movin and God bless em for it.
I liked it when released and I liked it yesterday. Smooth groove.
Had a lot of fun listening to this one! Fun/5
You gotta love to dance
hey, this was fun and awesome... thanks!
For a few years the S2S beat was inescapable in the charts. this is a great album, but has to be docked a star for only including the short accapella version of Back To Life, with Keep on Movin (also here) their two truly great tracks. It is bitty and piecey, but the bits are pretty good.
I like club music. Don't love it, but like it. But I really like (almost love) this record. I don't know if t's because it's just cool, or because I have listened to it at 2 am, time at which lounge music sounds better. But yes, four stars from me!
Very nice. Enjoyed this a lot.
Enjoyed this a lot! But I always like me some club classics.
Some absolutely jammin' club tunes.
Started as a 3 for me but quickly became a 4 on an appropriate sound system. So funky and I will definitely be dancing to this while cleaning the house or cooking in the future. I love the sampling.
This was a pretty good classic dance album. It’s definitely a good combination of soul, jazz, R&B, and house music, but I think it probably stood on higher ground back when it first came out. I can’t say it stands the test of time as well as other classic dance albums from the same period, such as "Paradise" by Inner City. It’s worth a listen, but I’ll probably never go back to it like I do with other albums from the past.
Listened to whilst barbequing and perfect listening out in the garden and other people can hear so pick something they won't mind music. Smooth and chilled out. Good stuff.
Steady beats overlaid with a cool variety of instruments and voices. Enjoyed this a lot. Favorite song is "Dance".
Never heard this before, and I loved it. Great listen that caught me by surprise.
Yet another British entry to the list, was expecting to be disappointed. However, although it probably doesn't deserve to be on this list, it is a fun listen. Keep On Movin', Back to Life (Original and Popular Mix), Jazzie's Groove (Piano Version) all great. Good vibes overall. A low 4*, enjoyable but not groundbreaking.
Good easy listening. Some of it felt a bit repetitive, with some rough vocal work, but it was still enjoyable overall. 'Dance' was my fave.
Very enjoyable, great grooves and female vocals. I can imagine this being a huge success in clubs around this time. The raps on certain songs are definitely very bad, but are at least very funny. Back to life is an incredible song
Surprisingly good
Really danceable and enjoyable music. 4 stars
A great club classic.
Nostalgic chill
Enjoyed this lots more than I expected, it's great.
love this
Very cool

I gotta say I quite enjoyed this. I really quite enjoyed this. It felt similar to Massive Attack’s Blue Lines which is an album I already love so this was a familiar and welcome sound (albeit worse by comparison). The lyrics were pretty weak and at some points so was the music, but the wide variety of textures and sounds that come from this album more than compensate making sure it is never a boring listen.
Absolute Eurotrash bangers. This, and not Nirvana or Nine Inch Nails, is what the 90s were all about.
Love this, classic
Childhood memories here. This is a real example for me of 'they dont make them like this anymore' I can only imagine how great it must have been to be 19 in the club for these tunes. Vibes are real.
ok
You know I can't say I'm surprised. This is the first album we've gotten that has any black people involved, and I went to check the top reviews. Lo and behold they're fairly negative, which is fine on its face. Then you see its "technically music" or that it "shows its age." Yeah, that's almost all music you dumb cunt. You're telling me you listen to Vivaldi and you're like "did this come out in 2018?" Fuck off. Art is stealing. Color me surprised that there's music now that sounds similar but "better." Unless I hear them say a bunch of slurs, I'm not going to take "it sounds like when it came out" as a serious criticism. Shoutout the review saying it "shows its age[,] could only be from 92-95." Reading skills are preferred but not required I suppose. I'm not saying this is a paragon of quality, but why do you have to question whether its music all of a sudden. I don't even particularly love this album, but I will go to war for it. A fun synthesis of sounds from African, Carribean, and African American culture. Just great vibes. Not do coke vibes (shoutout Belly), which may have been expected from a dance album in the 80s, more like keeping a good groove going in the dance hall vibes. It's a marathon not a sprint. And suck my dick, this has a timeless quality. 7.8/10 Favorite Song: Back to Life (I mean what else could it be)
8/10 This group is super important to R&B in Europe especially the UK. Learning about them and their influence on the culture as a collective was so interesting. For a group to set the tone in music, fashion, culture, and create a community around this culture is insane. The music is sick and inventive and pulling from African beats and the Caribbean while putting its own spin on it. With the UK being an island of immigrants it feels appropriate that this album pulls from that and sets the stage for the jungle/drum and bass/grime/drill music we see in the culture today. Favorite Song: back to life Acapella
4.5
The Burleigh Tavern isn't just a bar, it is a shrine to everything shallow about the Gold Coast. Attached a little too near the beach, it attracts a crowd that seemed assembled by a casting director. Sun-kissed skin stretched tight over suspiciously perfect, plump cheekbones, lips inflated to unnatural proportions, and linen shirts with white jeans so meticulously laundered, purchased from Tarocash, Universal Store, or Connors; they almost look like costumes. The drinks as ridiculous as the clientele. A single cocktail could cost as much as a decent bottle of wine, served in glassware so fragile it seemed designed to disintegrate if you didn’t hold it like vintage porcelain china. A pint of Balter will set you back a considerable $20. Add that to the $40 you paid to enter this ridiculous nesting ground of trust fund women and crypto-scammer men. Soul II Soul’s Club Classics Vol. One blasts relentlessly from the speakers, the smooth 80's/90's grooves so painfully out of place with the two-left-footed crowed it felt ironic. Tracks like African Dance and Happiness pounded on a loop, the silky yet dated basslines and repetitive beats pretending to create an air of sophistication, and anywhere else it would - but here, in a bar drowning in fake tans and fake vibes, it just came off as pretentious noise. People shouted over the music to make themselves heard, their voices cutting through the bass with an edge of irritation. By the railing, someone in a designer shirt leaned over and emptied their stomach onto the beach below, their friend laughing while snapping a photo for Instagram. The music and arrogant voices blur into one, and you find yourself reeling for the same drugs that everyone else inside is on, to either blend in and become like water, or to cope with the realisation that your night is going to be shit, and you've already spent your last $100 in your spending account to get in here and have a pint. The Burleigh Tavern isn't a place to relax, socialise, or dance, it is a pretentious echo chamber of overpriced mediocrity, wrapped in a soundtrack acts like it's better than it is. What a shame it is, that an album that I genuinely enjoy evokes these kinds of emotions in me. There is a lot to listen to, but then again, so little. There's nothing wrong with this, record you just need to be able to switch your brain off, similar to the same process talking to any local of Burleigh Heads, Broadbeach Waters, Paradise Point, or Palm Beach. Once you do that, an hour feels like forty minutes. Once you've mastered it, you start to enjoy the album. That is not an easy feat. The redeeming factor? Back to Life, which brings a fresh air of life into this album. It's smooth transition into Jazzie's groove is really a pickup too. What a great way to end an album.
Not much to say, great chill album. 8/10 Fav tracks - Holdin on, feeling free - Live, Dance, Happiness- Dub, Jazzies Groove, Back to Life (However do you want me),
Aged really well
Good for the soul
Okay, I won’t lie, I get it. Really good R&B that somehow would have worked just as well 15-20 years earlier with some tweaking. Will look for a cheap copy. B
Honestly it is not in my genre field but I know this was a huge part of forming modern rap so I respect it.
Pretty good. Not my type of music but I enjoyed it.
Not everything is great. That Do’reen sings like a goat. But overall, this is a good album.
Lots of bangers and just classic dance music. Every song hit my on a physical level which was the point I think.
Very easily enjoyable. Best album I’ve listened to in a while. Best track is Fairplay, so easy to dance around to. So close to giving it five stars, but some of the songs are just too long for me.
I was skeptical of this one and part way through the first sone I was thinking this was going to be a 2 star but it really grew on me and by the time I hit Feel Free it made me decide this was a 4 star album!
Fav song: Keep On Movin’ - M Beat Bonus Mix Seriously loving the classy 90’s house feel to this album, even despite some of the dated sounding drum samples. In love with the jungle mix of Keep On Movin’. That one is going straight into my playlists.
Great hits, better fillers than I remembered.
Super cool album. Feels about 5 years ahead of it's time. 3.5/5
Funky, hip-hop-influenced dance music. The BPMs generally don’t get too high but there’s a steady bass pulse that keeps the beats going. Great cast of guest vocalists throughout too. I really enjoyed this. It’s dance-y but chill.
Classy and elegant, and not insistently dancable – like the perfect midpoint between lounge and club music, or perhaps accurately described as dance music for people who don't like dance music. Big dropoff after the first cut, which is utterly classic, timeless.
Aber trotz dene vielne Bangers hani immer no s Gfühl vode fever ray im herze, a daas das Album doch ned ganz here chund. Darum muni au trotz dem grosse spass wider Starch uf vier ganz hervorzüglichi Schinkegipfeli abrunde. Dut aber au bits weh. Zum Schluss zitiert ich gern no mini lieblingsstell vo ihrne Tracks: "Modern people tend to dance. With this music I'll put you in a trance. Hahaha, now dance!" Let's gooooo
I really enjoyed this album. Great song and great memories from nights out 20 years ago. I can’t believe this came out in 1989. I can see why this is an influential album and a trend setter for this genre. Lots of songs and beats that have been heard on many different albums and nights. This is a brilliant record. Favourite song: Back to life and feeling free are great tunes. Least favourite: Nothing is bad on the album. Album artwork: Cool cover.
A record that I own, but don't spin nearly as much as I should. Smooth, funky, and beautifully orchestrated. Caron Wheeler's vocals (unsurprisingly on the big singles) are a real stand out. String arrangements are lush and sophisticated. This really is a precursor of Massive Attack a few years later, although perhaps with a little less grit and less depressive/gloomy. I really enjoyed listening to this. If this had been made even two years later, it would have been based on grainy loops rather than drum machines, but this really is an album a few years ahead of its time.
This is #day87 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... listening to Club Classics Vol. One (for the very first time) feels like tapping into an endless beat that flows through time... Released at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, this album serves as a time capsule, reflecting the vibrant sound system culture, Belgian New Beat, and The Second Summer of Love, all intertwining to create a dizzying mix of genres: dub, reggae, house, soul, gospel, downtempo, jazz, and more. When they sing "with this music I'll put you in a trance" on "Dance", they don't joke, they will do it. The record brilliantly reflects the spirit of its era. And I love this era! This is a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day88.
Pretty good
Good R&B.
From their name, I thought there would be double what I don’t like, but they brought the funk to each and every song.
I liked enough tracks to round 3.5 to 4.
Very nice and groovy

Some outstanding moments on here along with deep dub - yeah I liked this. Sounds great in the spring sun. Oddly one of the few times the remixes at the end actually lift up the album and make it worth the runtime.
I’m a fan of R&B and soul from the 70’s and this was really enjoyable
Wasn't bad at all. Enjoyable listen, great vocals.
Rating: 7.5/10 A fun dance and R&B album, nothing too revolutionary but a damn good time. Favorite songs: Keep On Movin', Holdin' On, Dance, Feel Free, Happiness, Back To Life, Jazzie's Groove. Worst song: Feeling Free.
I've heard of them, but never listened to this record. There is a huge amount to admire. Smooth and expressive soul/R&B vocals. Samples and loops. A cerebral spoken word sermon. A hip-hop track that puts me in mind of Native Tongues questing. A flute-led dance track. Funky electric bass playing. It's an adventurous and varied album. The house-adjacent beats feel quite dated, and that's very nearly a deal-breaker for me. I also probably don't know enough about modern R&B for their innovations to mean that much to me. But it certainly is a groovy and enjoyable record. 3.5*
Enjoyed it! Probably sounds a bit different outside of the club context. Pretty good background music. 4
The change from African Dance to Dance is jarring, because it's essentially the same track except just generally worse. Asides from this mistake, and I can only call it a mistake, the album is kinda soulful, as you'd expect from an outfit called Soul II Soul. But it's also jazzy, funky and building up around a central core of just lovely house music. Some of the bass work is great. And crosses nicely with some of the soaring symphonic strings.
I was very much a fan of "Back to Life" when it came out, so it was somewhat unsatisfying to hear the album version. However, although I don't often say this in this project, hooray for bonus tracks! Other than that, this was a good, solid listen, and hard to imagine that it was 1989 as I agree that it influenced a lot of music to come with its smooth beats.
I was familiar with back to life from back in the day. The album is along those lines with a nice groove. Not squarely my thing but a nice listen.
Lekker houseplaatje hoor. Had hier precies ff zin in gister, daarom 4/5
bangers na bangers, dit wil je
Lekker weer hoor, goeie albums laatste tijd
Divertido, bastante pivotal me imagino.
Effortlessly souflul and elegantly groovy. One digs also the positivity and the calling for love, equality, racial harmony, etc. etc. "Keep On Movin'" has lost absoultely not one iota of its utter and total hookiness and vibesiness. And several of the instrumental tracks are nearly as good. Like a lot of dance music albums, it falters here and there and can't really sustain its peaks (something that seems baked in to the genre). But actually S2S make this weakness into a strength, by modulating the mood and energy throughout. Back in the day, this record made one think one might actually be a dancer or could become a club kid – a testament to its unique attractions perhaps, though it couldn't do the impossible. Still, it remains great and a very enjoyable and satisfying listen straight through. Too bad they couldn't continue.
I enjoyed a lot
This is fun. I’ve spun it a couple times now, and I like it. My wife was familiar, but I was ignorant. No surprise, my loss.
Gets a bonus point for pure nostalgia.
What a nice album. Literally. The lyrics all seem positive and inspirational, just a good hearted bunch of tracks. Holdin On doesn't have crazy vocal range, but you can tell from the tone the simple honesty it has. I also like the wholesomeness of titling a track as 'live from a studio". Now that could be a weird British venue name, but it fits the vibe. Then we got Rockin flute solos, I don't see how anyone can dislike this album. It's not the greatest, but it's fun and objectively unobjectionable. Favorite track"Holdin On" 4/5
From the moment the beat hits on the first track, you know exactly what you’re in for over the next hour. Soul II Soul epitomize the 90s London R&B dance sound, and this album sets the standard. Maybe it comes off as corny, but I really enjoy the positive, funky, danceable sound of songs like “Feel Free” and “Keep On Movin’”. I even like the completely ridiculous vocals from Jazzie B on “Holdin’ On” and “Dance”. It just makes me want to move.
I like the blend of hip hop and R&B, the African instrumentals keep it interesting, and the flute stuff in “African dance” is just amazing.
This sound was so exciting as a kid in the early 90s. This album doesn't have many deep cuts but the singles are amazing.
Börjar starkt med Keep on Movin', Holdin On och Back to Life (som är en stark 5a) många bra låtar. Det är riktigt bra. Älskar den här skivan. Visar sig att jag kan texterna till alla låtar fortfarande. Antagligen denna skiva jag kommer rappa på demensboende. När jag lever i det förgångna. Stark 4.
Soul II Soul made positive, post-disco dance music. Late 80s London club music relied heavily on a mechanized back beat, and vocals in a disco/R&B style. Soul II Soul had a rotation of lead vocalists, which gave the band a range of sounds. Some of their most successful track featured Caron Wheeler, like "Keep on Moving." This is a strong collection of the dance tracks of the era.
Takes me back to when this came out and Jazzy B changed everything
Pretty good.
Favourite tracks: jazzy's groove; back to life
😎
Love, love it.
It was a very dinamic, fun and creative use of Jazz and soul music, so enjoyable. 7/10.
Fun to listen to!!
I remember listening to this album when it was released and I thought to myself “Welp, the 90s have definitely started”. It was just different, ya know? Still feels that way. Comfy. Groovy.
I started this album while I was on my way to the dmv, so my morale was very low. This album made my morning so much better despite the other thigns going on. Very influential too. Its almost a 5 star album but for me its not that replayable unless im in the mood for it, which doesnt seem like it would be often.
Really liked!
"Club Classics Vol. One" is the debut album by British musical collective Soul II Soul. R&B is the generic listed genre. Bandmember Jazzie B described the music as "an amalgamation of good dance music." The album was produced by Jazzie B and bandmember Nellee Hooper. The rest of the band which would change from album to album included Caron Wheeler, Simon Law, Do'reen Waddell, Rose Windross, Daddae, Aitch B and Jazzie Z. The album produced two hit singles and, commercially, hit #1 in the UK, #14 on the Billboard Top 200 and #1 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums. "Keep on Movin'" gets the party started. A dance beat. Soulful vocals by Caron Wheeler. A piano melody with a synth background. Smooth backing vocals. This is a really good song. A song of hope...keep moving on when things get bad. "Holdin' On (Bambelela)" has a quicker beat and a great groove. This time a soaring synth melody with piano in the back. Jazzie B singing with background female vocals. Hold on to that dream you have. "Back to Life" is sung accapella by Caron Wheeler. Very soulful including the background singers. About two-thirds of the way through handclaps and a drumbeat are added. She has to know, however, do you want me, however, do you need me. The song transitions right into the closer "Jazzie's Groove." Jazzie B's deep vocals talkin the lyrics. Female backing vocals. Horns and a bass are added and fade out the song. This is really good album and reminds me of mid-to-late 70's R&B but also modern with the beats and jazz elements. It's smooth, soulful and very dance-oriented. The themes and music is optimistic. There are periods of mostly instrumental music but nothing drags. A recommendation from me.
Good stuff, plenty of variety and oomph but still SIIS.
Class 90s soul/dance/club music
NICE
fave track: jazzie's groove final thoughts: LOVED it, very nostalgic tunes in here
Excellent positive hip-hop vibe. Love it.
-1 for putting a crap version of back to life on the album
Sehr gutes Soul/Funk Album. Toll aufgenommen.
Good, smooth R&B album. Nice vocals, subtle beat, and no bad language.
r&B
Absolute vibe to put on, on a Saturday in the summer afternoon with a few beers 🍻🌞
Another in the first column for me outside of the hits. Loved it. Smooth af
Holy nostalgia! First song came on the radio all the time in my childhood. Great singing and you can tell this is the middle age of synthesizers. Not great but not bad. Back To Life has been sampled so many times.
Cool, soulful, and hooky.
I can wholeheartedly recommend this to the house heads among us. Disco forever! Yeah, anyway, not perfect by a stretch, but I can dig it.
4/5
Fun hearing the whole album. Found a few more songs that I like. Not everything is great. That Do’reen sings like a goat. But overall, this is a good album.
7/10 - I was grooving through most of the songs especially keep on moving and african dance
A good album, I liked Keep On Movin' and Back to Life the most.
Oh, Back to Life just blew me away. Couldn´t stop listening to that one. Overall, the vibe of this album was incredible and I enjoyed it. This R&B /soul album was awesome.
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Holdin’ on, African dance, Dance, Back to life
Pretty big album when it came out. Still holds up well. Standouts: Back to Life, Keep on Movin', Jazzie's Groove 3.5
This felt very 90s, in a good way.
Legit
Good beats and vocals. Solid album, nothing wrong.
Really fun album with great vibes
Fun and fun it beats. This was enjoyable.
I really like the vibe/sound in \"Feel Free\" very smooth.
I think most tracks are a bit too lyrical to work as upbeat dance music. But the fusion of R&B and soul with electronica works well.
"Club Classics Vol. One" by Soul II Soul is a groundbreaking album that played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of dance and R&B music. Released in 1989, it's a fusion of soul, funk, and electronic elements that define the late '80s and early '90s club scene. Tracks like "Back to Life" and "Keep On Movin'" are iconic and showcase Jazzie B's innovative production and Caron Wheeler's soulful vocals. The album's production is a standout, featuring richly layered arrangements and innovative sampling. While "Club Classics Vol. One" doesn't stray too far from its genre's conventions, its cultural impact and enduring grooves earn it a solid 4/5 rating. It's a timeless classic that continues to be celebrated in the world of dance and electronic music.
Loves the classics. I knew most of the songs. I didn’t like every mix/version.
Admirable diversity and prominence of vocal performance for a dance album. Didn't all land for me, but deserves an extra point fornthe audacity of the title for a debut album.
Lots of classics and a showcase of few different genres from the 90s
I was expecting basic simple 80s dance music. I was blown away by this album. It was very good.
I forgot how much I used to like this. This was very much my thing in the late 80s. Soulful electronic house. Good stuff.
Back to Life is a bop
Very influential, on a wide variety of bands and singers. Must have seemed like it was from the future, cos it doesn't sound dated at all! 4 ⭐
Good background music
It's 1991 and we ride to the Blue Elephant in a noisy Bajaj all the way down Galle Road. The man at the door looks doubtful-- we're 13, but after presenting our diplomatic ID's and a little coaxing from a local friend on the inside, we are in with big Lion Lagers and hitting the floor. Soul II Soul is on and the party is bumping and we are dancing close in the room with the AC blasting. Objectively, it's not the greatest album of all times, but we were rocked by it and it has a place inside me.
massa o soulzao (sonzao), bem agradável pra se curtir
Oh yass, I'd have shook my booty to this in the 80's.
So SAULT has clear antecedent. Reductive, sure: There's plenty more disco flair here, most evident in the female vocals establishing the record. It's the contrast with that beginning which suggests the real strength of the club classics: The live recording and other vocals switch the sound up, but leave the (rather low-fidelity) production, but maintain flow. Thus, the record is dated by quirks but presents a complete package. With a little bit of everything, it helps if you like dub.
I expected to not like this one. I was wrong. Great and varied sound. Really happy I gave this a proper listen.
Not quite as magical as I remember, but still a belter with a couple of stand out tracks.
A pleasant, well produced funky, and groovy album. The songs blend together really well. It was fun!
"Keep on Movin'" New-Wave and The Boss! Bahahaha (jk jk, it all has it's place) Some new music up in this Club. I love that they knew that this album was going to be "Club Classics" from it's release. Front to back "Bangers" Fuck it, own it. I wanna be Euro-trash partying with this shit. Peek 90's partying and lights and dance music. This is an album that obviously is playing at Bud's smoke shop anytime you walk in.
Of its time, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. That cool jazzy dance sound has endured for a reason.
Jamming album! Will be in heavy rotation for the next couple weeks.
Soul II Soul is a rather appropriate name for this enticing collection of equally appropriately titled Club Classics. Fusing hip-hop with house, R&B and the soundsystem culture of their homeland, Soul II Soul galvanized those varying genres and came away with songs that, many years later, still defines the core outline of who they were. Favorites: Keep On Movin', Fairplay, Holdin' On, African Dance, Feel Free, Back to Life.
I was hoping for more tbh, the overall feel is there but doesn't hit the mark I wanted. Loved Ambition though
Smoothe jams with a nice retro 80's vibe. Good background soundtrack for your next party.
Pleasant surprise seeing as I've never heard of this album before and the only track I knew was Back To Life. Really loved listening to this album
Great album! Really enjoy this era. Just puts you in a place. Solid 4. T3B 1. Back To Life (However Do You Want Me) 2. Dance 3. Feeling Free
A milestone of an album, including one of the dance anthems of the late 80s. Keep on Moving is brilliant and still sounds great, and there are other good tracks such as Fairplay, Feel Free and Back to Life (the precursor to the later single). Some of the other tracks don't stack up quite so well, particularly those with a spoken Jazzy B accompaniment. Nevertheless, a landmark album.
Nice vibe but not something I’d listen to again
Groovy!
Listened Before? N I believe this could have been one of the greatest albums of the late 80's/early 90's dance wave... had there been more material on it. There's 3 versions of every song it seems. I understand that that's probably what they were going for but it gets old by the 4th rendition of "However do you Want Me". Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: One of the "However do you Want Me's?"
Un album injustement décrié par la communauté d'idiots que vous formez et dont eltrapeze semble être le chef.
Nice soul music, I Recognized a sample on Kanye’s Jesus walks album.
Very pleasant listen.
The first great British album of the 1990s. (Yes, I know that it came out in 89. But rave changed everything, innit?)
Hell yeah. This was great. Lots of great sampling.
Now that's delicious
I really enjoyed this! Super fun, funky jams
Black British confidence
4.25
A fine definition of British 90s cross over dance music . Enjoyed the nostalgia and positive vibes .
Absolute classic in back 2 life, rest so so
Very influential, on a wide variety of bands and singers. Must have seemed like it was from the future, cos it doesn't sound dated at all!
Back to life and Jazzie's groove were my favorite tracks
7/10.
I like the beats, and would listen to it again. 8/10
Liked It not my usual listen
Great rhythms and beats throughout. Nice vocals, some interesting lyrics. Holdin on, keep on movin, happiness, jazzies groove
Some really great stuff here, but it’s too repetitive
Nothing remarkable, but overall it was enjoyable to listen to, found myself nodding my head, tapping my foot, and enjoying it in the background. Great vocals and production.
If there's an album that defines 1989 musically, this is it.
Très bon album de funk, les chansons instrumentales sont incroyables!
Production: 13/20 Songwriting: 9/20 Innovation: 11/20 Bangers: 15/20 Emotional response: 15/20 =63 Banging
It's 9/10, beatiful vocal and instrumental, but it's not masterpiece
Cool beats. Definitely sounds like classic 90s R&B music.
Has a very Different World vibe to me. Its good dance music. 3.
Really strong instrumentals and vocals but very dull and boring
Músicas boas de ouvir. Tranquilinho. Mas voltou a uma categoria de não me impactar tanto. Bem background pra fazer outras coisas, nada WOW. Voltamos pra média.
Flashback to the beginning of the 90s/late 80s. I recognized a couple of the hits here, and some other tracks that were remixed in house tracks. Kind of cool, not sure I'd listen to again though. 3/5
