Reviews (page 9 of 13)
Pleasantly surprised. Songs I’ve heard that I didn’t know were Paul McCartney
Amazed at the song writing ability of Paul. My favorite songs were the first 2 on the album. Band on the Run and Jet.
Lot of familiar zeitgeist melodies. First song band on the run has a fun progression.
Some really catchy stuff, although I wouldn't expect any less of Paul McCartney. Lots to enjoy here, and I appreciate the variety of tone and style across the album.

gud
Baddest band in the land
Not a bad album.
I liked this more than the Beatles I'd give a 4.5 if I could. Still don't think I've heard a 5 star album on this list
i love paul so this is top tier ok
This is a case where the Deluxe Edition is very tedious but the standard version is stellar. Great album!
So many hits. Pretty damn good.
Cool, especially fun front half. I hate hate hate the choir in the intro of the last song. i thought rolling stones were gonna suck but I guess I'm wrong
Surprisingly enjoyable, despite not fawning over the Beatles. The titular track is a classic anyways.
This was enjoyable.
for some reason im imagining myself on the beach listening to this one? why is this very beatelzy when its only paul mcartney reading the back story of how this album came about was super crazy shoutout to that maybe one of the first albums that im thinking of relistening to again??
It's all right.
3.5
I liked it not my cup of tea but I respect anything that the greats do. It’s an album I’ve heard many times over before. No notes just a solid album.
Alright little album. Very listenable, but fairly background outside of the main singles really.
It was fine, though I was expecting better.
Perfect song to fall into sleep
Band on the Run is an A+ song. It's downhill from there. Jet is pretty good, and none of the others made much of an impression. The bass playing is the standout for me.
sweet good paul mccartney the only beatle that matters music. i saw blue bird and black bird kissing btw. it’s a great album. it’s very pop and commercial imo which isn’t bad at all but it just means it doesn’t stand out to me. it’s not the type of album that will change your life and view of the world. which is okay. it’s a good casual listen. i can out it on in the background, on a drive, while I make food. that’s good music. it’s not show stopping. but it’s good. Let me Roll It is my favorite. I enjoyed Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five a whole lot. —POEM— You in my bedside You in the kitchen You and someday our children You in every corner of the house You in the centerfold of my fantasies You in my palm in my vision in my dreams my wishful thinking my daydream my nightmares and memories my plans and conversations my thoughts and tea my foods and sweets everything, it seems
The singles do a lot of the work but they are good singles. McCartney is excellent and there is a decent variety so I have to gove this a 3.
buen pop
Didn't have any specific expectations and it turned out to be great, in The Beatles style, for sure 👍
Never actually listened to this one. It was quite good (surprise)! Glad I finally got around to it. There are a ton of great tracks on it.
Kinda fun; knew Let Me Roll It from the Apple concert.
It was fine but with a busy day I didn’t get a good chance til the evening and I wasn’t compelled to finish it
Good stuff, Nineteen Eighty Five is an under-rated tune, BOTR, Jet also great.
Sterke nummers zelfs. En toch pakt het (mij) niet
gezellig
(Paul McCartney trying to think of a second good song): uh…. bluebird Actually liked this a lot more than I thought I would. The riff on Let Me Roll It might be the worst I’ve ever heard or I might like it I’m not sure honestly. What the fuck was the drummer doing after the chorus. It must be intentional he does it both choruses. And on Picasso’s Last Words in the first verse. It straight up sounds bad. Really what is going on with that whole song.
Paul takes us on a journey a bit away from Beatlesland, and it's quite a fun ride with groovy basslines and tight musicianship. At times it feels like the songs are a bit too messy, a little more straight forward approach would have made it a better listen in my opinion.
Meh
McCartney’s flaw as a songwriter is that his work comes off schmaltzy and impersonal. Such a catalog, yet I feel like we don’t know anything about him learned through his music. The same Paul is here on Band on the Run, his best work after the Beatles. Some moments of pop music mastery and some real dull cheese. That was always McCartney, though.
A unique album but at some point it started to sound like variations on a theme.
This is quite a beautiful album. Who would have thought I’d like music from a Beatle?
Probably Paul's best solo album, with some truly inspired moments, but it's a bit inconsistent, all things considered.
3/6
Good memories
It feels like the wrote a hit and just had to fill an album to meet the label's requirements. It's about what I expect from Paul. I'd listen to it but it's a little lifeless.
Fuck wrote wrong reviews for wrong albums, holding Paul accountable
Don't really understand the 'this is great because it's what the Beatles wouldn't let Paul do' when this just sounds like a middling Beatles record
Was surprised to realize I had never listened to the whole album. Realized I liked the songs Let Me Roll It and Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five more than the two released singles.
I liked this album but nothing quite hooked me. It was good to listen to and I recognized a few songs.
One of my favourite jokes is about the opening track on this album, Band on the Run: "When you want to listen to three songs but only have time for one." I come across a fair bit of mockery regarding Wings, but it's okay really. Some good bits, some weird bits. It was the 70s!
I knew the main song from the radio years ago. It’s all really not my thing, I don’t see the appeal but it was ok I guess. But why are there always saxophones, can’t stand them.
sweet first song overall is ok, a little monotonous with the bass. the voice aswell mamunia is kinda sweet. but im kinda getting bored with the same range and voice 2,4 /5 I like the last song a lot
The title track is obviously a rock standard, but the rest of the album was merely fine.
Starts off strong but falls off significantly.
Competent, but does not stand the test of time
I really enjoyed the first and last tracks on this record. The rest of it was kinda lackluster. Favourite Track(s): Band On The Run, Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five Least Favourite Track(s): Jet
Not to bad
Favorite: nineteen hundred and eighty five
This album starts strong with the two best tracks. The rest is merely ok and meanders where it should peak
Is het verschrikkelijk? Nee. Sterretje of 2 à 3.
Its good if you like to listen to Pink Floyd like me but not as good as something like the dark side of the moon. So I liked it but there are better albums.
It’s yet another rock album that also wants to dabble in some other genres. Sometimes the songs sound like a Beatles song. Huh I wonder why
Enjoyable but didn’t blow me away- sounds like an average rock album idk why everyone’s hyping it up so much (probably bc it’s Paul McCartney)
It was fine. Standout songs: Band on the run Let me Roll it
Meh. A little better than I expected but feel like this is overrated
Top 3: Bluebird Let me roll it Jet Very good 👍 not my fav paul mcartney album ever. It feels like a lot of background noise. But very good 👍
Fine. Not horrible, but didn't grab me.
I don't have a great history with the Beatles, but I'm finding I have a bit more patience for their solo and adjacent projects. Wings is actually pretty. I'm not offended or vired by the music, and there are a few tracks that are pretty good. Paul McCartney is writing songs that sr the blueprint for pop music today ("Bluebird" for sure). Delightfully surprised.
too slow paced for me
Siento que tiene vibras a pipes of peace. Me gustó, pero no es mi estilo.
Mrs. Vanderbilt and Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five were cool, but the rest felt just fine. I didn't dislike it, but didn't get overly excited either.
Enjoyable. Liked this the most of the Beatles offshoots I've heard so far.
Macca is a legend , band on the run is a song with many songs in it clever writing and really cool sounds and expressions , Paul’s voice I love In the wings stuff 3 for me as some of other stuff didn’t grab me as much
picassos last words= chefs kiss
Enjoying very much! I love this type of conjumption between his classic voice and all the instruments.
After leaving the Beatles, Paul McCartney released two solo albums, and then he formed the band Wings. Their first two releases were rather disappointing, both critically and commercially. Band on the Run, the band's third release, was far more successful. The album is generally regarded as McCartney's best post-Beatle work. The album includes "Band on the Run," one of the most successful singles from McCartney's Wings era, and a collection of interesting, varied pop songs.
pretty funny that we got a paul mccartney album before a beatles one, yeah this album's fine. the recording quality suddenly drops off after the first track, which is weird? not sure what happened there? but at this point i'm very aware of how much worse it could sound so i'm grateful it's still as listenable as it is. as for the music itself.... i'm not so into the first half really but once i got to "let me roll it" i started paying attention. its got that lethargic sludginess to it that i always vibe with but in a much more bluesy styling than these kinds of tracks usually have and i love it. it instantly registered itself as my favourite track. from there on the album is a bit better imo, but mostly i found myself distracted by the charmingly shitty drum machine in "picasso's last words (drink to me)". i can't find any info on which specific one was used, it kinda sounds like a korg mini pops? but i'm not sure and it's kinda driving me nuts. the shakers being just tins of gravel is cute too. but i really wanna know what drum machine it is.... uh yeah anyway this ones ok. might put it on again just for "let me roll it"? but i know i'll end up falling down a hole wondering about that drum machine again.......
I never could get on board with McCartney's particular brand of twee.
obviously a classic, but it doesn’t reach the height of a lot of the beatles’ records.
As a kid my favorite beatle was Paul, as an angsty teen it was John, and as a young adult it was George. Haven’t hit my ringo phase but with that being said, decent poppy Paul songs with a couple of great tracks to start and end. Then some throwaway tracks
overall felt very produced musically i guess it was impressive not really my thing though got better with that last song the drums and beat switches were quite interesting
hmm. the ones i like, i really liked, but i kind of don't care about the rest. some very good parts but also some very meh things.
Tiene temazos pero tambien relleno
While it had some good enjoyable songs, the majority felt more like background music, but didn't fit into that niche too well either.
The songwriting seemed good but the album just didn't really stick with me at all.
Pretty good
Solid 3.
I didn't think I liked Wings... Maybe I do?
3.5/5 https://rateyourmusic.com/release/album/paul-mccartney-and-wings/band-on-the-run/ It’s no Beatles, but it’s also no no Beatles, yagetme? Has some highlights, has some Paul McCartney let’s repeat this one line over and over again in different increasingly crazy ways bullshit (fuck Picasso’s Last Words, and fuck Why Don’t We Do it in the Road forever and ever).
I'm not sure if Paul was a good musician, but for sure he was a charmer.
Classic, but besides the bangers not that breathtaking, given his career before and after
Not a fan, it's Good, just not my vibe
On first listen, Band on the Run (the song) is a 70s classic, the rest is mediocre.
It’s fine. Hovering between a 3 and 4, guess 3 because I really have no urge to come back to anything off this album
I always thought of Paul as the most basic Beatle, but he does really know how to make catchy pop rock. My favorite parts were the 1-minute angsty guitar/synths/PinkFloyd sounding stretch in "Band on the Run" before it got all hokey, anytime there was saxophone, and a lot of "Mrs. Vandebilt". 3.5 rounded down.
The first two songs were solid bangers but I was skipping ahead by the 4th song. Helen Wheels was fun and Let Me Roll It sounded like something that John Lennon would have done. This album runs hot and cold. 3.5/5
Not a bad album by any means, but it's infinitely more interesting to talk about than to listen to.
Super sympa. Ça donne bien, belles mélo, belles rythmiques, sympa !
6/10 some good songs some songs r just sound
First 2 songs are great. Band on the Run is 3 songs in one. Rest of the album is mediocre.
There was any sounds good. I said before that was a big meh to me but I listened again in the morning on the bus, seeing through the window and I connected more, idk what is about the album or what mess the lyrics of the songs but connected more
Some good songs, like the two singles and 1985, some boring songs as well. Interesting to listen to, but not the most interesting album other than the pop rock hits.
A good album with a few great songs, but also some weak points. MacCartney is a great songwriter & arranger. As an album, it’s a 3.
At its best when it sounds less like the Beatles
Kinda good. I like that he messes with the styles
Great first 3 songs, then it just kinda lowered its level. But in general I liked it.
To be honest, as the world’s greatest pop songwriter, it’s certainly not bad, but it can’t move me in the slightest.
Nice album…
Fine, but quite same-y.
Surprisingly good, best post Beatles album I've heard.
My Dad had this, and occasionally as a child, I would be allowed to play his records on the big stereo, so that's a fond memory. A few decent tracks too. Heard before ✅️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ❌️ ★★★☆☆ (5/10) Total reviewed : 280 Already owned : 63 Purchased : 15 To buy : 3 Nope : 199
Mid, bit boring
Of the ex-Beatle solo albums that have been on this list, this one is by far the best but still only okay.
Hooky pop. I enjoyed the breakdown at the end of Ninteen Hundred and Eighty Five and had heard Band on the Run too many times to count. Overall it is fine. I've never been obsessed with Beatlemania though I one played an anthropomorphic beetle drummer in a TOON RPG that I was delighted by.
Paul McCartney like...its Paul McCartney. Swell :)
my heart is like a wheel let me roll it ??? gościu to cię właśnie kosztowało 1 gwiazdkę....
It’s a nice album 2.5
LOVE the first song, the rest is ok
It was okay. Nothing to write home about.
My favs are band on the run and let me roll it. I liked the album in general but didn't love it. Maybe if i re-listen it i will like it more
beatles but not as old sounding, a lot more clearer in terms of sound. songs that stand out are nineteen hundred eighty five, mamunia, and no words
Very much like the Beatles that came before; 1 or 2 very strong tracks surrounded by just okay ones, but the strongs are remembered and held up. Not particularly high highs here (the title track is the standout, and putting it first sets a trend that can't be followed by later songs). Perfectly fine.
This overstayed its welcome a bit. I could have done without the last couple of tracks. The first bits were good enough though.
Solid enough!
Jet is so much fun! Mrs Vanderbilt started to grate on me a bit towards the end. Some of the riffs in other songs got repetitive, too. I always like a big band sound, but I realized I just don't enjoy McCartney's voice or style enough for a whole album.
Really enjoying this one overall. Starts and finishes strong with some meh in the middle.
Loved Band on the Run and Let Me Roll It. Rest are mediocre. Good production, sounds like the Beatles but not memorable enough outside the two songs.
You can see the shades of the Beatles in here, but it never becomes more than the sum of its parts in the same way. It has a BIG sound to it, but it's more above average than great (3.5)
Paul lost two bandmates right before recording. Had to play guitars and drums himself. Then Nigeria - harassment, robbery, hospitalisation. Still finished it. Standout tracks: Band on the Run, Bluebird, Picasso's Last Words. Really brilliant. The stamina was exceptional. He proved himself. But as an album? Doesn't work well. Great moments but doesn't hold together.
very average
Bland on the Run
It's... interesting? Band on the run is still a great song though.
immabluebirdimmabluebirdimmabluebird it is ok when it bangs it bangs when it doesn't it doesn't. 100/10 songs on here but as an album meh.
m-m-m-MID band on the run, jet, mrs vandebilt, picasso’s last words, 1985 all good-great bluebird annoying as fuck let me roll it, mamunia, no words all quite boring. insane downgrade from RAM tbh
Post-Beatles Paul McCartney is an enigma. Still only 27 when the Beatles split, and already the writer or co-writer of some of the greatest pop songs (or just songs) in history, there was a reasonable expectation that a lifetime of wonderful music was still ahead of him. And yet it wasn’t. Not to say it was bad, but really nothing did with Wings or as a solo artist would have given him a position amongst the greats if it wasn’t for what he’d done in the first stage of his career. Band on the Run is a pretty good album, for all that. The title track and (especially) Let Me Roll It are strong songs. Jet is nice too. But it’s not really a classic album.
A pretty pleasant listen, and it’s got some out-&-out classics here, like the title track, “Jet”, “Mrs. Vanderbilt”, & “1985”, but it gets a bit repetitive, especially on the second side, and it’s very much not comparing to the Beatles’ prime era of innovation & achievement that this (and the far superior “RAM”) came off of.
5/10
Not a bad album, but it had some interesting songs on it, nothing super note worthy except the title track band on the run.
uncomfortably comfortable the first part. the typical view of intimacy of a man. typical '60-'80 sounds, which i don't like. the last song was good. for me there could have been more blues or rock vibes, more bass. i liked the structure though.
it's fine. very well recorded and produced. most of the tracks have something going on, but it's not enough to maintain interest for the full length of the song.
Excelente!
Really stupid, but i immediately linked it to the beatles, and then realised its mccartney of course. I liked listening to it in the background of studying, not too distracting, but also really nice to enjoy whilst doing something else. I would put it on at a dinner party
song i went back to first after first full listen: let me roll it this is my favorite beatles and/or beatles-adjacent album i've ever heard so that's pretty neat
mrs Vandebilt nineteen hundred and eighty five tbh was not in the mood for this, better than expected....feel bad.....but once again this list of albums feels so repetitive giving a 3 but prob higher
This one really surprised me. I always thought I didn't like wings. I listened to this album while watching an amazing sunset which could have influenced me but I enjoyed this album more than I expected to
Decent, need to get into more beatles
Good, very good. You hear Beatles in almost every track though without any Lennon grit. Would listen again
Coo
It could be good but it’s NOT 2.7
3.5
Milli Vanilli?
I've said before I've heard The Beatles music enough times to never need to hear them again. I respect them, but I've heard them enough. Apparently, that goes for Beatles solo projects as well. I was a bit surprised by how many of these songs I already knew, having never listened to a McCartney album before. Like his work with The Beatles, it's obvious the man is amazingly talented. I don't dislike his music, just don't get into it myself. Tons of respect for the man, the music, and bonus points for having Christopher Lee and James Coburn on the cover. 3 1/2 stars
Insert Larry David 'Pretty good...' gif here.
It was more eh
No. 117 it's a fun listen but not something I'd come back to with any frequency.
I quite liked this, but I could never really shake the feeling that it felt like an album of unreleased "leftover" Beatles tracks. Band On The Run is a great song, but the rest is...fine. Not bad by any stretch, but not great easier. Tossing up between 3 and 4 stars.
This is pretty pleasant, but I can’t say I found any hidden gems from listening to the whole album. The hits I already knew (band on the run, jet, let me roll it) are the best on the album and probably the only songs I’ll return to again and again.
Me gustó.
Before: I do like the title track, it's one of my favorite songs from 1973. And Jet is another good one. I don't recognize any of the other tracks but I am sure I have at least skimmed through the entire album at least once when building my yearly playlists. I have the track Band On The Run ranked, oh hold on, I don't have it listed at all. I will have to rectify that. I'm gonna add Jet as well. During: Band On The Run and Jet are good. I really do like Jet a lot. Bluebird is OK. Mrs. Vanderbilt starts off pretty good but soon gets kind of annoying and I have to skip to the next track. The next 7 tracks are not so great and I skip through most of them. The closer, Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five, is interesting. I'm probably going to give this one a 3. Only because of the first 2 tracks, otherwise, it would be a 2 in my book. After: Nothing else to add really. This concludes my 50th. It's time to find out what's next.
I mean, it's Paul McCartney. It sounds dated, because it is. Impressive that he played all the band parts himself.
First time listening to this album beyond Band on the Run and Jet. It was a good album, entertaining, but like when I listen to John Lennnon, I'd rather be listening to the Beatles. The songs are silly and complex, and Paul is in full stride for his vocals. The song Band on the Run always bugged me as I like the two intros better than the main song, but it remains a strong title track.
I’m really not a fan of Paul McCartney but I thought this album was pretty decent. I was familiar with some of the songs already. I probably wouldn’t listen to this album again but it was pleasant enough.
kinda hit or miss for me
Band on the Run (1973) is the 3rd studio album by Paul McCartney and Wings; Wings only being Lynda McCartney and Denny Laine at this stage. Recorded in Nigeria but with no noticeable African influence. I don't own a copy of this album and was only familiar with the two UK singles: Band on the Run and Jet. I gave it three listens to give it a fair go. Best bit - Paul's voice; worst bit - all very nice with no real bite. Somehow even though most of the album is new to me it makes me feel nostalgic. Side A: Band on the Run - Beatles-esque medley 4/5; Jet - perfect pop 5/5; Bluebird - boring background music 2/5; Mrs. Vandebilt - 'Ho, Hey-Ho' catchy nonsense 3/5; Let Me Roll It - pretty good Lennon impersonation 4/5 Side B: Mamunia - lightweight & forgettable 2/5; No Words - Denny Laine's first writing credit with Wings but not a stand out song 2/5; Picasso’s Last Words (Drink To Me) - supposedly a song written to prove a point; catchy but not great 3/5; Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five - this is peak Paul but I still can't bring myself to give it more than 3/5
2/16/26 - listened driving to take my car into the shop. Was fine. Highs were high, lows were low. Best Song - Jet!
Once you get past the first two cuts, average at best.
I did not like it at first and I did not like it at the end... It's kinda boring and I realized that I really do not like heavily harmonized vocals... +1 star for circumstances during recording...
Side one has a few great songs, but each one drags out for just a bit too long. Side two is, frankly, boring. It's undeniable that tension fuels great rock and roll. People tend to make better rock and roll when they're young and there's a ubiquitous internal tension between 16 and 25. There's also something about bandmates who don't quite get a long, or who get along like brothers, that produces music that is just better than either of them produce alone. This is exhibit A of that phenomenon. Paul's extraordinary gift for melody is here in abundance. He understands production and has complete command of the sound. But some pixie dust that was all over Paul's songs just three or four years earlier is missing. He clearly feels very comfortable, at peace, and in full command here. Good on him; He earned it. But I think the music suffers for it. Being a little bit on edge (even if you're just on edge about delivering your own finished product to a group project) leads to a bit more focus; a bit more desperation; a bit more risk taking.
While this is typically the genre of music that I can't stand (I call it "Venture music" - a throwback to my first job in retail; this is the type of music they would play all day long), this wasn't awful. I was able to listen through most of the album without skipping, but some songs were grating and whiny. (3)
Either it’s simply just not for me or my cheap earphones is not giving it enough justice. (ps. I don’t think it’s bad)
A classic grouping of songs from a man who helped change the music industry in the 1960's. Not my favorite Beatle but enjoyed listening to the album none the less.
Decent, but nothing special really.
This album felt like a disney soundtrack
Jets!
Fucking love wings, Paul is my fav beatle, band on the run is a great song. The thing w Paul is he either writes bangers or the silliest goofiest bad songs and even that I love about him, he pumped out so many dang songs. This album, save for band on the run, was basically just the Beatles. Didn’t tickle anything that Beatles don’t. That being said, 3-4 great songs on here and the rest were decent none sucked. Very solid album. 3.4999
nineteen hundred and eighty five was my favourite
Woowwww i liked it
Good and fun
Much respect. Pretty good but not my favorite of PMC
3.5 for the classics
I’ve been doing this album-a-day thing for about 20 days and I’ve only gotten a woman once. And I’d say 80% of the other albums have been British white guys. That said, this album is pretty good.
Sounds a lot like the Beatles which makes perfect sense. You know what you're going to get going in, which can be a good thing. Nothing crazy here, but pretty enjoyable and relaxing. 6/10
Went in only familiar with the title track. Overall thought it was pretty bland, sounded like a Beatles album without Lennon's influence. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five is the most interesting sounding song, but seems completely disconnected from the rest of the album. Why does the guitar solo in No Words just fade out? It was the most interesting thing to happen in 3-4 songs. Not an album I'll really revisit
For the most, I think Paul lost his mojo after the Beatles. A brilliant talent, but he needed John, George and Ringo to rein him in. I tried so hard to like this. But, it’s, mostly, just too cute. One exception is “Let Me Roll It”.
Better than a temu beatles but not that exciting
was ok
Goofy, but sort of likeably so.
So, i came to the conclusion that from the beatles, Paul McCartney is the one that gravitate most towards :) He just has swag ig I don't how to explain it hahah I think he just has a way with words. His writing is absolutely golden most of the time. Apart from that, the album is pretty good, but it is still not really my vibe. Had the same issue with the beatles in general. I do feel and see the importance of their music and their impact OBVIOUSLY; its just not the music I would put on for funsies.

Mrs. Vandebilt Nineteen hundred and twenty five Band on the run Bylo pro mě těžší udržet u toho pozornost, nic z čeho bych si řekla wow a chtěla to poslouchat pořád dokola, poslední skladba nineteen hundred and twenty five je za mě nejlepší, krásně to ukončuje.
surprisingly good
2 out of 4 A couple of good songs, but I was not the biggest Wings fan. Sorry, SIr Paul.
Band on the run Jet Let me roll it Rest is meh
It was alright. I thought some songs were pretty good, but I thought all the songs went on too long.
Compared to the rest of the McCartney cannon, it’s definitely slightly overrated when albums like RAM and McCartney exist but, still a really good album.
It was okay I guess. I always misheard the lyrics as man on the run until now
Before I dig in you really have to appreciate the album art. It’s pretty iconic and fun. Honestly it may set the tone for the album itself. It’s a stellar offering and maybe one of Paul’s best as a solo artist, it’s fun upbeat and there are some great songs on here. I find myself always wanting to compare former Beatles to the Beatles and that’s really unfair because the Beatles are greater than the sum of their parts. That being said this is a great album I enjoyed listening, I may revisit if I’m ever in the mood for some Paul, but that’s probably not often. I love ‘Let Me Roll It’.
3.5/5 it’s good fun. Really enjoyed the last song
I'm sorry Paul, but the saxophones were a terrible mistake. It's pleasant enough listening but, were it not for McCartney's name on the front, I'd have trouble distinguishing this from any other run of the mill 70's pop band.
Kurant. TIttellåta er fet. Ellers ikke så spennende for undertegnedes ører. Et sted mellom to karakterer.
Let me roll is, a song I knew, but not the name of it, half "slow bangers" half plucky dittys. Sounds like a different band every song Last track is great, seems to be the most non Paul track. The reprise at the end got old, felt like this album ran out of steam a bit
It's alright.
All things considered: McCartney's exit from The Beatles was pretty graceful, at least in hindsight. It feels like people are slowly becoming kinder to McCartney's post-Beatles output and more cynical about Lennon's. And, honestly, that's a development I'm fine with. A few years separated from The Beatles, Band On The Run seems to be the fan favorite McCartney album. And there's a lot to like here. We've basically got a bunch of grand, ambitious pop tunes, any of which could have feasibly been a hit. But, it does make sense that the title track gets most of the attention here. It's multi-phased and every part of it has merits. It captures some of the magic seen in The Beatles' biggest, most well executed moments. And immediately following it with the rockin' Jet doesn't hurt. Honestly, I don't have a lot to say about every song here, but I do want to say that I liked them all, at least to an extent. The biggest downside here is pacing. Honestly, I don't know how he did it, but this is a *long* 42 minutes. None of these songs are *that* long, but somehow half of them feel a good 2 minutes longer than they are. I guess, in short, even though I like the songs, I think the album drags a bit. But I did enjoy it, more than Lennon's Imagine for anyone keeping score.
Hello Paul
Only knew one song (title track) off this record for sure - maybe I heard Jet as well. I think it was 1985 that I liked as well. I’ll go back to that one but overall I’d say 3.5 but won’t round up. I am holding McCartney to a higher standard.
Starts out with a major back-to-back bang of course. Didn't realize McCartney was doing Hey Ho Folk in 73!. Lost points for writing a song for Picasso
if only the rest of it could be as epic as band on the run suggested it might be
It's okay. A nice, 3.33. Nothing for the playlist, nothing that makes me want to turn it off, or down. Not 4 material, so a nice ho hum 3.
It was an ok listen, but not something I would actively seek to hear.
This was ok. It was exactly as I thought it would be, but was enjoyable. The title track and Let Me Roll It are obvious bangers, but as an album it was entertaining enough.
No estuvo mal .
The solo careers of The Beatles are a mixed bag. This bag represents mediocrity. Favorite Track: "Band On The Run".
Some gold- Band on the Run, Let me roll it, and to a lesser extent Bluebird and Jet. Some stinkers on here as well though- album really tails off with those last 4 tracks. McCartneys thing of stitching bits together is great when the parts are good, but in stuff like Picassos last words, it’s simply a succession of bad bits. Also the ‘callbacks’ to other tracks on the album feel really shoehorned in. Think the strength of the aforementioned bangers do, on balance, make it a good album though.
Finally got a chance to hear this album. If there is one thing this generator has done for me, it’s served up a bunch of albums I meant to get to over the decades and never did. It says, here. You’re doing it today. So, Sir Paul’s best solo effort. Hmm. The lead-off single is great, of course. I love the several genre change-ups in the song. The second song “Jet”, also a single, is very good. The rest was pleasant but didn’t knock me out. I had the feeling that he was aping the Beatles but then maybe it’s just his style which of course was a big part of when the Beatles sounded that way. Still, it felt derivative of himself somehow. A first listen for me is nearly always a disservice to the record but alas, I must rate on a single go this time.
Some good variations on the McCartney style 3 - deservedly on this list
Speaking of Beatleses! Interestingly, I think the John Lennon album sounded a lot more Beatlesy than this one does, which is contra my expectation. This is still poppy but the songs are a little more self-indulgent, or at least longer. Also a little more (electric) guitar focused. It's OK, but 'Bluebird' is no 'Blackbird'. Very funny and British to think Lagos is an ~exotic~ location to record an album. I like the random sax solos.
Labai bitliška. It's okay.
5/10 solid album. something i would listen to with my grandma. lowkey a bop and the instrumental is nice. 2 new songs to the album.
Well crafted but not super layered Paul seems to be on his Maxwell's silver hammer/sgt pepper conceptual shit here at times (derogatory) Deeply uncool, but I think Paul McCartney wouldn't be as good as he is if he was cool or cared about that at all Huge gulf between lyrics and music quality It feels weirdly shallow, but beautifully made Corny ass hopping on the reggae trend of the time with the limpest upstrokes you've ever heard on jet Every time the album was starting to lose me Paul and co threw in an insanely cool musical choice and it sorta hooked me back in 1985 encapsulates all the cool musical ideas and some genuinely progressive stuff undercut with, at times, endearing corniness. Lotta good 3 minute songs that are 5 minutes long Let Me Roll it also reiterates that Paul McCartney could just lean on making real good rock n roll songs and I do think it's cool that he doesn't just do that I think I would only come back to 1985 to listen to again, but some of that is having heard all the singles way too much in my life
Jet is so fire
1963-1969. The Beatles defined a decade, innovated, perfected, and left music that still amazes to this day. Paul McCartney, at the end of the Beatles’ career, was at his height and everything he touched was gold. He was in his strength. Which is what makes his solo career, including Band on the Run, so tragic. (Let me get this out of the way: first two tracks are listenable, then I can’t anymore, but it does close with an energetic “Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five” - why couldn’t he have done more of THIS at least?) Paul’s songs work best when there is a complete process: 1) Draft the song. 2) Share song with John. Rework. 3) Bring song to George and Ringo. Perfect. 4) Record song with George Martin. Transform. Apart from this complete process, and probably dealing with a somewhat traumatized Paul McCartney, the songs were never quite the same. There was still strength coming through on “Ram.” That would be the best I’ve heard from Paul post-Beatles. Some of y’all will enjoy this much more than I am able to. I will be kind and go with 3 but I really can’t engage this album since steps 2-4 are missing. But I’ll remain grateful nevertheless for Paul, John, George, Ringo, and George.
This album has become less interesting to me over the years, and it is evident that despite McCartney's genius, he needed the Beatles as much as they needed him.
1. gostei, bem chiclete, o começo é mt legal 2. nao gostei muito não 3. instrumental delicinha good vibes mas refrão chato aff 4. nao gostei tanto mas mais que o 2 5. okayyyy okayyy i liked it 6. good vibes tb mais legal q 3 mas bem chiclete 7. gostei muito, letra bem legal tb 8. ok a segunda metade é bem bem legal 9. muito boa muito boa muito boa ótimo pra finalizar
OMg the greatest fucking shit ever. Is that enough to not deactivate me? 🙄
Better than Coldplay
Spotlight free-doom
7.8/10 like it a lot but would not listen everyday
3.5-5 this album was super groovy. Not my usual taste to go for a Beatle but I went in with an open mind and ended up saving a few songs. Would keep these in the stash to show off but I wouldn’t regularly listen to them
i think i like maybe 2/3?? too fast for me, would listen again maybe another time
I love the Beatles and I love Paul McCartney in particular but I found this album to be... serviceable. A couple of great songs including the title track and I really loved "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five" but the rest was that typically solid McCartney song writing but didn't enthrall me.
I’ve never listened to this before and yet somehow it was very familiar. Easy listening.
A classic
mid
Iha jees.
So much energy and fun
“Band on the Run” and “Jet” are familiar and pleasant enough. The rest of the album? Competent and smooth. I yearn for some edges, to be honest. This is probably closer to a 3.5 than anything else.
not impressed, last song was good and the first three were good mamounia was memorable cause it reminds me of memouna
it was ok.
Knew the opening track, although it isn't my favourite. Once again Remus Lupin approved. Most of the songs are pretty long, which I'm not sure I always appreciate. Some of the songs are too 'chaotic' for my likings. Though I appreciate the instruments. I wasn't as engaged in the album as I am with some others. I do really like how the last song ends with a brief snippet of the first song, it's a full circle moment.
It was a good album. The one song that stood out to me was the last track Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five. It was aa goodl listen but other than that nothing else that sticks out.
It’s hard to think that any attention would have been paid to this if it wasn’t for Paul McCartney’s name being attached to it. The fact that it is credited to Paul McCartney and Wings belies its lack of confidence. It is very average and I can remember barely any songs from it. It only serves a purpose on this list as a way of ranking the Beatles solo output. Where George clearly wins.
Found this hard to judge. I don’t particularly like much of it, particularly the first third/half of band on the run (that synth is almost as horrendous as ‘wonderful Christmastime’). But I’ve got to judge this in the round and this is better than Lennon’s solo output. At least songs like ‘Mrs Vanderbilt’ is a little different stylistically which sustain some interest.
I especially liked the opening and the closing song, with some detours in the middle of the tracklist not being my cup of tea. But overall I enjoyed it.
Not quite as good as Wings Greatest Hits but some great tracks proving Paul McCartney was still a viable talent post-Beatles. Although, I don't subscribe to the 'all killer, no filler' opinions, I do understand how this quietened many post-Beatles detractors. Solid effort by Macca & co.
For my first day, the first song feels reminiscent of the situation I'm in, though feels dragged on. Jet felt more lively and my vibe though this album isnt really my style as they all feel very repetitive and simple.
Good variety. Wasn’t paying too much attention as I listened to it while reading. Love Paul Mccartneys voice though
Mid enjoyment. Better than I was assuming it would be.
This is a good album. It’s interesting to hear Paul McCartney with the different band. This is the first time I’ve listened through the wings diskography and I felt like it was strong. It does miss some of the magic of the Beatles and the tension that was created between the main songwriters in that project, but regardless, I felt like Paul’s personality really came through. There were some memorable songs on this one I especially enjoyed the last two songs which felt like a bit of a psychedelic retelling of the entire album, which I enjoyed.
For me, McCartney’s solo career was kinda lackluster. This is probably his most commercially successful solo album, but still meh. In this album McCartney attempts sort of a hard rock version of Sgt. Pepper. Vocal harmonies are on point, we got some funky basslines and cool riffs. It’s not bad it’s just not great. Three stars I guess for notability.
An enjoyable listen
its nice!
A bit insipid. I just can’t get the image of Alan partridge singing jet out of my mind
It’s good, but it’s difficult to not compare it with the best of The Beatles.
I liked bluebird
3.5. No skips, good repeatability level. Paul certainly has a unique gift for melodies and hooks.
OK
A solid banger. Preference to the upbeat songs
I'd never really listened to Wings, except the single. I also didn't ever listen closely enough to "Band on the Run" single to realize it was actually like 3 separate songs that are one song, all good. There are other good tracks here as well. Mr. Vanderbilt was a stand out for me, and there were a few more. I liked Muminia as well. Picasso's Last Words is a little odd. The last track is a good closer. 3/5
Paul McCartney is a great songwriter. Favorite track: mamunia for the round at the end
Correcto
Inoffensive pop music but interesting.
Solid album. Starts super strong then tails off a bit.
The Beatles were magic together. The Beatles were mediocre separately.
No private session used for Spotify. A couple of classics on this album, but a couple of stinkers that balances things out nicely...I guess.
This was a fairly good listen. Enjoyed it. Singles are all great. Liked the interpolations of Jet etc. in Picasso. Worth a listen.
Sick album
Not my fave, but not awful either. I kinda wanted to turn it off and listen to ELO though. I am willing to say this here, and I know someone will seethe to read it, but Jeff Lynne is greater than anything the Beatles, Paul McCartney, or Wings ever wrote. Hell, Jeff Lynne wouldn’t even agree with that statement. But listening to Wings just makes me sad that I’m not listening to ELO. But, Wings is fine. It doesn’t inspire me or make me want to hear repeat listens, but it’s non offensive and I’m glad someone out there likes it. 3/5
Pas un fan des Beatles. Bonnes compositions.
Really more of a 3.5 for me. If I never hear Jet again in my life it will be too soon. The first 2 tracks are just exhausted for me but the rest of the album is solid.
Adorbs, but not generally totally to my taste.
It’s probably the best Paul album post Beatles. It always gets reviewed as much based on who he is and what he did before, as it is about what it actually is like as an album. As a standalone review - it’s decent. But it’s no better than a lot of stuff around at the time. 3
Most of the post-Beatles individual careers have been a mixed bag. There are some nuggets of competence but the majority of the releases have been relatively pedestrian that likely would have been skipped over or lost to the void if they didn't feature the namesake of a former Beatle. Paul McCartney has certainly had the best post-career arch with his solo and work with Wings and Band On The Run is probably the best example of it. The album features a lot of the charm that Paul brought to the big band. His tunes were usually a little more positive and bubble-gummy, which holds true for Band On The Run. Paul was already legend before this but his ability to stay relevant and maintain a career over another 50 years after the split is no feat to ignore. I enjoyed the listen to Band On The Run and will continue to come back to the title track when I need to scratch that itch. 2.92 stars
Such a good songwriter but it feels like Paul needs someone with him telling him it needs to be weirder while he’s doing it. A few great songs but I can’t imagine I’ll come back to it.
pretty good, nice sound
I struggled to get through this album. I am not a Paul McCartney fan and hated him in The Beatles. John Lennon was always the talent in the writing aspect, George was the real musician. Anyways, I liked a couple of songs on this album. The title track and Jet. The rest are boring and annoying. Much like Paul McCartney. 2.9 / 5 stars
Strangely familiar. (I wonder why?)
It's alright but not quite my tempo.
It’sa solid Beatles-y album with a few good and crap tracks
2 star lyrics over 4 star music makes a pretty clear 3. I mostly knew Paul McCartney as the poppiest Beatle so I was genuinely impressed by the variety in the music.
Decent album
Pretty fun.
Band on the run carries the album
I love the voice so much Jet must have sounded so heavy back then Edit Apr 2 2026: 4 --> 3
This is definitely better than what I expected, thankfully. I'm pretty sure I hadn't heard any of the other songs on this album besides the first two radio hits (the title track and "Jet"), and while I began to worry when the saccharine "Bluebird" followed, "Mrs. Vandebilt" helped right the ship and the rest of the album wasn't nearly as derivative or painful as I feared (although I'm note really sure what to make of "Picasso's last words (drink to me)". Reading about the creation of the album, I was also surprised that it ever got produced and released. Between McCartney managing to piss off and effectively jettison more than half the band just before traveling to record the album; to the absolutely baffling decision to go to Lagos, Nigeria to record the album (because it sounded "exotic" to McCartney), only to discover that the studio was basically in shambles; and then he and Linda McCartney getting robbed at knifepoint and other calamities, all makes for a bizarre story in poor judgment. (And of course then Fela Kuti barged into the studio accusing McCartney of appropriating African music; when McCartney played tracks from the album to ease Kuti's suspicions (presumably not including "Mamunia"), I wonder if Kuti was then just annoyed by McCartney's musical tourism....) But everyone survived, more or less, and the album seemed to help rehabilitate McCartney's credentials.
3.75
The sound of Paul McCartney growing up. Partly. A break-out album for Paul, and Jet & BOTR are both excellent tracks, but ...there's a lot of filler and "noodling".
The debate is unavoidable, so here's my take: McCartney and Lennon produced roughly equal music post-Beatles. It was just really, really different music. McCartney was less serious and vastly more commercially successful, but Lennon produced a few true classics. Flip a coin, but my personal preference is McCartney. This is likely McCartney's best contribution post-Beatles. Two certified smash hits, but only about three or four good songs on the album. I'm also not sure how influential Sir Paul's solo(ish) work was. A perfectly fine, light pop rock album. Influence 2. Quality 4. Intangibles 3. Hits 4. Not even my favorite Wings album 2.
Band on the Run et let me roll it sont bonnes.
