Nonsense pop songs but a fun time
7.5/10 Highlights: Jet Mrs Vandebilt Nineteen hundred and eighty five
Great cover. Catchy songs. Band on the Run is an amazing song. Paul is daddy. Ez 4.5
The first four songs are an ez 5. The rest of the album just doesn't hit the same.
I loved about 80% of this album; a few tracks felt somewhat repetitious, but the rest makes up for it. This and Venus and Mars are great.
This album is interesting in its shift through different moods and vibes, as Paul McCartney seems to do frequently in his solo work (abrupt shifts of key, tempo, chord progression). As one might expect with a Beatle, the songs are high quality, the band is splendid, however the production sounds a bit dark, but soft around the edges and nice as you would expect for a 1973 recording. Great album. Favorite songs: Bluebird - Billy Joel vibes in a great way. Enchanting with great repetition and harmonies. Let Me Roll It - my new favorite sound. This has a great organ and old soulful feel with an odd dark edge. It's a brilliant song. Mamunia is lovely. Picasso's Last Words is excellent 'drink to me, drink to my health, you know i can't drink anymore' 1985
This McCartney fella sure can write a song, huh?
Paul McCartney does it again proving he is the hit master of the Beatles. This album starts off so strong with band on the run and jet. The rest of the songs are still pretty good and are Paul showing he still has so much in the writing book. It’s hard to say Paul is anything less than a genius after what he’s provided musically. This album is a showcase of that. Excellent album. 8.3/10
Quintessential listening.
i'll be so honest: i didn't listen to this one as intently as i should've. it's hard to give something your undivided attention when you're doing the wapo crossword! i fear i don't have strong opinions on this one either way because i really didn't listen to it very well. if i were going by my letterboxd rules i'd give it 3 stars because i'm neutral but since a pretty girl mansplained it to me i guess i'll bump it up to 4. will be listening again!
Great opening 1-2 punch with the title track followed by Jet! You know Paul was sitting on Band on the Run for years like "just wait" - plenty of good pop on this album, nothing too serious just having fun like Paul always did. I heard that this tour was incredible, that the energy in the crowd was electric. Overall I enjoyed this.
This guy is so talented. I enjoyed this. Some really great racks on here.
Yo this paul guy is pretty good. I think he has a real chance to make it
Just looking at this album cover, there’s a lot of people who needed to be paid off this album. I hope everything worked out. I had no idea Paul McCartney was in another band after the Beatles. I’ve definitely heard the first track before, Band on the Run. Bluebird was pleasant, as is most of this album. Let Me Roll It sounds like something I’m going to call gospel rock. Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five was another standout. Shout out to Sir Paul and Wings on a solid album.
Great album by McCartney, probably one of his best as far as solo work goes
I'd always written off McCartney's post-Beatles work, but this is more interesting than I thought it might be, adding an experimental, electronic edge.
Great easy listening album with a fairly consistent vibe. 8/10 -B Good vibes, thoroughly enjoyed -A
So much fun. How have I not listened to more of McCartney's solo work?? Did get a bit too slow and repetitive sounding for me in the middle-end. But overall really good stuff.
Great album. Classics. Always enjoy Paul
First two songs are classics. Rest of the album is good. I haven't listened to this one before, but there's not too much to say. Really good classic rock.
Have listened to this album a number of times, I love it. Serious hits and the songs that aren't complete jams are still songs to sing along to. Overall this is a great album. Standouts: Band on the Run is his Bohemian Rhapsody and quite the jam. Jet - love the fuzzy bass Let Me Roll It has that delay and I'm obsessed with it. Also sounds like John Lennon singing Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five - nothing needs to be said just a fun bop All jams. Just unfortunately some of the other songs don't hit as well. Can't in my right mind give this a 5 but it's lingering in the 4.2 area.
Good for background
Fav: Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five
It was really entertaining
listened to again still a great Wings record
1973 , 2010 remaster 'mamunia mamuniaa' got a nice old melodic hook. Mrs. Vandebilt, loved. 'ho hai ho' 1885, like Let me roll it, great chorus
This just showcases that Paul McCartney is a really accomplished and interesting songwriter. I really like this album, there's tons of great songs, and lots of moods and tones running through it. 4.5 rounded down.
Ok, a bit middle of the road but easy to listen to
nice

You can tell that this is an evolution from the Beatles. McCartney’s songs bounce all around thematically, but there’s a cohesiveness to the album. It ends with brief bars from the titular track, indicating a great degree of care that went into the production. Overall, I can’t say that I prefer his solo work, or that with wings, over the Beatles, but you could see how he evolved as an artist in this album.
Not my genre, but a chill album, that I enjoyed a lot.
prolly a 3-4, suppose a 4. some repetitive lyrics, but the sound quality and composition was nice, reminding me of daft punk songs
Some great sounds
A pretty easy 4 for this one. Jet and Band On The Run are both pretty incredible tracks. The rest of the record is solid. In a way this is the McCartney 'golden years' I think. Ultimately I think Wings is a bit of a 'greatest hits' band for me, but this is a great record.
Liked it. Was familiar with the hits. If I see the vinyl I think I’ll pick it up
forgot the good songs on there
Enjoyed this album
I feel like Wings is always considered a bit of a joke, and doesn't get much respect. Probably any effort by a Beatle to do anything else will get compared to what was one of the greatest bands of all time, and will always have detractors That said, this album is pretty solid with more tunes than I realized I would know. Let Me Roll It is my favorite of the bunch but there's no songs in there that I didn't at least enjoy. Pleasantly surprised as I expected this to be worse based on the reputation of the band.
I've hated many of the songs on this album for a long time, mostly due to them being played multiple times a day on the muzak player of an awful retail job I had in my 20's. So I was hoping that with decades of not hearing Wings, that dislike would be tempered. I'm just okay with Band on the Run and Jet now. However, the last two tracks on the album got my attention; got to love a track when you know shit's getting real when the synth and clarinet drop! The end of the album alone makes me really want to listen to this again, so I'm giving this a 3.5/5 much to my surprise.
This album is very fun. I feel like Wings is a joke for some reason, but I really enjoyed it. 4/5
Is this our first solo Beatle album? (I know Wings is technically a band, but c’mon) It’s funny, George has always been my favorite Beatle, but I tend to gravitate to Paul’s stuff just as much. He was the rocker of the group, if you wanted a good time, he’d deliver. And this has plenty of groovy moments and rockin’ tunes, but I vibe as much with most of the softer songs as well. For a while, I’d sing “you’re a good girl” to my dog in the tune of “Bluebird”, so the album has a place in my heart for that alone. It’s also just a lot of fun and doesn’t overstay it’s welcome, even if it’s pretty frontloaded. A-
-DRINK TO MEEE DRINK TO MY HEAALTH
Never really listened to McCartney and Wings. Knew Band on the Run. Downloaded several songs.
I don't know, but maybe I'll rate it 4 stars. Had some nice songs. That one line from Picasso is still in my mind. + Jet + Bluebird + Namibia + No Words + Picasso's Last Words (Drink To Me) + Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five
4/9, 44%
Never listened to much of Paul’s music outside of the Beatles, a man can write a good pop song I’ll give him that. Only real complaint is some of the songs like to overstay their welcome a bit too long.
Great album and production but not my cup of tea.
7/10
The title song, Jet and Mrs VanderBilt are the best songs and the rest is very nice. Never heard this one of Paul&Wings, just the London Town which I adore. This one 4 stars
3.75 really... it starts so fun and strong but lost me around track 5...
I can't tell you how I feeeeeel, my heart is like a wheeeeeel... JET!!
Pas du même niveau que Sgt Pepper, mais super album tout de même
Massive McCartney fan boy here and some great tracks on here but he is super super cheesy and you could argue that nobody in Wings had the clout of John Lennon to tell him to reign it in at times. Still I think the cheesiness is something you have to accept is fundamentally him. His dad was a really good pianist and raised him on old music hall comedy songs and such so it's not surprising his songwriting reflects that.
Minder erg dan ik dacht. Eigenlijk best wel leuk. Dankbaar dat Mull of Kintyre hier niet op staat.
I’ve never heard this before and I really enjoyed it. I think I used to write Paul off as a bit of a cheese-monger but this was a nice upbeat 70s album.
It's McCartney, so you know the songwriting is solid. It's impressive how many genres this album manages to bring together to make sound like one cohesive album. Blues, cod-reggae, and even something between a stadium singalong and a pirate shanty make it onto the album. It's all solid. Favorite tracks: "Band On the Run", "Bluebird", "Let Me Roll With It"
While there’s a certain amount of trademark McCartney schmaltz, it’s still probably my favorite of his solo records.
Little too beatles-y in some spots, but generally solid. Mixed feelings about the title track. Never expected any album here to immediately make me think "Naruto??", much less this one. BT - Jet - Mrs. Vandebilt - Mamunia - Picasso's Last Words
Man. I grew up on this album. It was in my parents collection. I don't think it's fair to ask me to rate this one because it's not just about the music for me. I love love love 1985 & Jet. Amazing songs. As for the song Band on the Run. This has always been a favorite song of mine. From the lyrics, chord progression, changes. It will always be a perfect song to me.
Found this to be similarly enjoyable to All Things Must Pass. 8/10
So many great songs from start to finish. Proves that McCartney flourished even after the Beatles
was a good record! enjoyed the listen. nice guitar moments
Good vocal harmonies, fun instrumental variation through the album. From classic Beatles-esque rock to more orchestral to pseudo-country
enjoyed it, several hits!
For post beatles it's very good, not one skip on there. However it's not 'All Things Must Pass' so it only gets a 4.
Loved jet and band on the run, fantastic album, very high four
Feels like a quintessentially 4/5 album to me. An iconic showcase of McCartney at his most indulgent, most artistically free and fun, you can just tell when he bangs out those high notes that he's having a blast! Some undeniably good sounds, and an attempt at album-level cohesion that's not terribly convincing, but at least they give it a shot. I love McCartney-Beatles, I think compared to Lennon he's still (improbably) somehow under-uppreciated, but this was a tiny tiny bit too indulgent to me, before it got a little predictable. Still, great playing, some really fun George Martin-y arrangements, great musicianship. A master at his craft on a pure fun album, nothing too self-serious. Love it. 4/5
Very Good to Fantastic! 4/5 Standouts: Band on the Run, Jet, Helen Wheels, Mrs. Vandebilt, Nineteen Hundred and Eight Five, Bluebird, Let Me Roll With It, Others: Mamunia, Picasso's Last Words.
"Band on the Run" is the third studio album by British-American rock band Paul McCartney and Wings. McCartney decided to record the album in Lagos, Nigeria where the band could record during the week and vacation on the beach on the weekends. Well, Wings members' Denny Seiwell (drummer) and Henry McCollough (guitar) quit right before leaving for Nigeria forcing McCartney to play guitar, bass and drums. Nigeria had just gone through a Civil War in 1970 with the resultant, a military government and rampant disease. Paul and Linda got robbed at gunpoint with the thieves taking tapes and notebooks. The recording studio had low quality equipment and recording itself was tense. They lasted six weeks on Lagos and finished it in London. Quite an achievement just getting anything of quality, it appears. The album themes are of escape and freedom. It received mostly favorable reviews with a few critics putting it on the same level as Lennon's "Plastic Ono Band" and Harrison's "All Things Must Pass" as best post-Beatle albums by their members. Commercially, it started of sluggishly but ended up the best selling 1974 album in the UK and Australia and hit #1 in the US for three weeks. The guitar/keyboard melody intro into that chunky guitar chorus open "Band on the Run." A song containing three passages going from rock to more folk with acoustic guitar and back to rock. The song is based on The Beatles struggles with the tecord label Apple corps, their manager leaving and drug busts for rock musicians. "Jet" was named for one of McCartney's kid's ponies. A dramatic open with the sax and goes rockin.' Nice, catchy backing vocals. A waltz start goes to one of the better guitar riffs on the album in "Let Me Roll It." Some thought this was a response to Lennon's "How Do You Sleep?," an attack on McCartney. Paul denied that and said it was a metaphor for rebirth. Nice vocal chorus again. The second side starts with "Mamunia," which was inspired by a Marrakesh hotel. This is slower with an acoustic guitar. The chorus repeating Mamunia. Nice harmonies. The album closes with "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five." A dramatic, dark piano led melody. McCartney vocals are almost searing. A sax added. Sort of chaotic music at the end with laser sounds and strings. It's about escape and artistic freedom. A great deep cut and one of the best songs on the album. A cut that was not on the original UK release but on the US and subsequent re-releases is "Helen Wheels." This is the most straight-forward rock song of the bunch. Everbody singing in the chorus. A name for Paul's Landover as they traveled from Scotland thru England. I remember this being the first album I bought (yeah, it was probably my Mom as I was six or so). The tunes still sound catchy. Some great guitar riffs by McCartney. Most of this is standard rock and, besides one song (the Picasso one), all good songs. Maybe not at the artistic level of the referenced Lennon and Harrison albums, but it is one of the albums that immediately comes to mind when asking for or mentioning solo Beatle albums.
Pretty good, some big hits here. Kind of a typical self-reprising in here too, which is alternately endearing and boring. Also, Paul sure is in love with his voice.
Honestly this is a good album.
Great album, once again it was a blast realizing how many Paul McCartney songs I knew
crazy how this is literally way better than Abbey Road
I’d always been a little dismissive of Wings. I then picked this record up second hand as a shop was closing and it was dirt cheap. I might have been wrong….it’s an excellent record with some classic tracks.
Lots of variety here. I need to give it a more focused listen. Some songs are clearly better than others but I don't think there are any duds on it.
Helt nice nog men int lika bra som the beatles!! Sorry!!
I’m finding it very difficult to describe this album in any way that isn’t some variation of ”solid”, ”nice” or ”post-Beatles”. But, nonetheless, it is a nice, solid post-Beatles album. Would need to give it more than one listen to really dig deeper into the songs themselves
Lit
Classic
From reading about this album, I understand it was Paul's first great album post-Beatles. There are definitely some catchy songs here, and it's a fun listen, but it's definitely not Beatles-level for me, at least. But it's totally fun, so 4/5
One of my favourites - certainly favourite album by an ex-Beatle. Always been a fan of Paul’s excellent pop and knack for melody. I don’t mind that his music is less “worthy” or serious as John’s. Great tunes. Another superb album cover. Those tracks which aren't fully formed excellent songs are still very good ideas albeit underdeveloped.
A solid offering from Paul McCartney's solo career, albeit not my absolute favorite. Still, this was my introduction to his music post-Beatles, and I'll always appreciate that.
This was a nice little album. I really liked the track “No Words”.
Mahtava albumi.
Ive heard a bunch of these before, but never figured it was McCartney post split hah. Some really nice songs and some that are mildly forgettable imo Saved tracks: Band On The Run, Mrs Vandebilt, Let Me Roll It
Iconic album, iconic cover, iconic dude. Band on the Run is very enjoyable, and the whole theme on escapism is universal. While some songs are quite forgettable, the peaks of 'Band on the Run', 'Let Me Roll It', and 'Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five' are amazing. Both stylistically and vocal-wise this was a nice breath of fresh air for McCartney.
Great album—every song was at the least catchy, and some of the songs were genuinely brilliant even among Paul’s incredible discography, such as the title track, Jet, and Let Me Roll It. I think Paul does have better solo albums, and it doesn’t really ever reach the timeless highs as some of his Beatles tracks do, but that isn’t a knack on its quality, as that’s a pretty insurmountable hurdle. Still very good and endlessly listenable.
Paul’s one of the all time greats and this is a good offering from him. I like how he switches things about midtrack. A few songs aren’t super memorable but it’s a good album and a fun listen.
I marvel at how effortless Paul McCartney makes it sound to create fantastic pop music. His gift for melody, his instincts as a songwriter, his willingness to pursue ideas where they lead him, the sense of humor woven into the recording and compositions. This is not my all-time favorite of his albums, but it's just so good, and I enjoy Linda's contributions immensely. I think she really adds to Paul's sense of calm and good humor. The first two tracks alone make this a classic, and there's lots more to love. I never did love the recurring guitar riff in "Roll It To You," and the song that follows drags just a bit too, which is why this doesn't get the 5 stars, but at his worst, Paul McCartney is better than most, and at his best, he's in a class above.
I've always been a Paul fan, and this was a cherished album for me as a kid. I'm only dinging it a star because some of the tunes don't quite work for me, but damn, the ones that do just make me so happy to be alive. And what more can you ask for out of an album?
If this had been a Beatles album there would be books and blogs and DVDs analyzing and overanalyzing every note. This is nowhere near the best Beatles album but at least it's within spitting distance in form, function and quirkiness. But like the lesser Beatles albums, there's about a third of this that only a fanatic could love.

It's clear that McCartney's clone could write some pretty decent songs too!
Many great songs
The only Paul McCartney and Wings song I was familiar with before today was Band on the Run, which is great, so I figured that today's album would be pretty good as well. Plus, Paul McCartney was a well known name internationally due to his previous gig as a member of the Beatles. Truthfully, Paul's solo stuff is much more enjoyable to me than his stuff with the Beatles. Upon doing some research about this album I learned some interesting stories about the recording of it. For some reason, Paul decided that they would record this album in Nigeria. The studio was in disrepair, and the end of town that it was in was quite the slum. Paul got robbed of his demo tapes and song lyrics at knife point at one point during the trip. Apparently Paul and Fela Kuti got into an argument while Paul was down in Nigeria as well. Fela thought that, since Paul opted to record in Nigeria, he would "rob" some of the local musical influences, and inject it into his music. Apparently Paul invited him over to the recording studio, Fela listened to what they were laying down, and was like "oh, ok. This is just regurgitated Beatles music, never mind." Also, Ginger Baker offered them his studio to record in, but Paul being Paul said "No, I want to do it myself." Apparently right before they headed to Nigeria, the drummer and guitarist from Wings quit, so Paul recorded the bass, guitar, vocals, and drums parts himself. It was just him, and the two remaining Wings members, his wife on keyboard, and a rhythm guitarist. It would have been great if Ginger had done the drum bits for the album. The drums were ok on the record, but you could tell that they weren't really studio quality. Overall, this album endured all those hardships and still managed to go triple platinum. It was a great album, and is very easy to listen to. I may not seek it out, but it had more hits than duds, and if it was playing in the background, I wouldn't be inclined to turn it off. I went into this exercise today assuming Band on the Run would be my favourite song, but Let Me Roll It ended up surprising me, and claimed the top spot. Favorite songs: Let Me Roll It, Band on the Run, Mrs Vandebelt, Jet, Bluebird Least favorite songs: Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me) 4/5
Good album with brilliant sleeve picture.
I think if you include this then Paul has the best non-beatles discography. this whole thing is fantastic, I love jaunty paul and the rest of wings is fantastic. best tracks: let me roll it, band on the run, mrs vandebilt
This is really a 3.5 but it's more towards a 4 than a 3. Mostly great with some really fun moments, but I have no words for No Words.
Sounded pretty banging
Ben altijd onder de indruk van de carrière van deze man. Ook na de Beatles nog mega succesvol, met gewoon goede nummers. Kende alleen McCartney II eigenlijk maar deze ga ik vaker luisteren
Life after Beatles.
Started out hot but slowed down
This threw me back to riding in the car with my mom as a kid (she loves 70s music). So I guess nostalgia maybe played a factor but I love Paul McCartney. The only thing I don’t like is when I can’t remember if a song is by Paul McCartney, Wings, or Paul McCartney & Wings. It’s just so confusing. Side note, Band on the Run is one of my favorite songs of all time. It’s 3 songs in one, and one of them is practically guaranteed to fit your current vibe. A “musical cheat code” if you will.
I was already familiar with three of the songs here (title track, Jet, and Let Me Roll It). Those are good. The rest is...OK, pleasant McCartney stuff. Best track: Jet
Bon album, mais quelques skip même après 4 écoutes
This album becomes kind of hard to follow as it progresses. It starts out with two absolutely classic rock songs, and then begins to explore outwards from there. It's Paul McCartney, though, so the songs are great. I was hoping for more of a rock album based on the songs that I knew, but at the same time it makes for a nice, relaxed album 4/5
Mrs. Vandebilt
Elska þetta!
This was right up my alley as a huge Beatles fan (who favors Paul's songs). There were a couple songs I wasn't sure about, but on the second listen, I enjoyed them a lot more
Although I didn’t realize it at the time, this album for me closed out the 60s and kicked off whatever came next, with an x-Beatle getting all the radio play that the Fab4 use to get. The songs are diverse, with solid riffs and vocals and lush arrangements. The hits are great and really capture the early seventies, though there are a few stinkers, like Mamunia and Bluebird.
This review may be heavily tainted by nostalgia but I'll try to be as objective as possible. I was 11 yrs old when this album came out and I thought it was McCartney's best work, ever, and that includes the Beatles. I couldn't guess how many times I played it on my crappy turntable, probably in the hundreds I recon. I mean, Band on the Run and Jet to lead off was a monster one-two punch. The album flags a bit in the middle though, and Picasso's last words seems to go on forever, but then he closes with another banger, 1985. I didn't know about his Lagos fiasco until I just read it in Wiki, but the fact that he could produce such a solid album despite such adversity also adds to the legendary status of this album.
3 great songs. The rest...okay.
Nice, catchy and engaging Favorite song was the first one or the last one
Zitten wel paar goeie nummers tussen
Great Beatles solo album...one of the best. I think McCartney solo is probably the pinnacle of post-Beatles output. 4.5/5
classic
Solid if unspectacular, with two stone cold classics to open, but a bunch of good to very good afterwards. As such, it's pretty much my definition of a 4 🌟!
Really great pop rock album. Definitely proves that Paul was the real earworm king of the Beatles. The songs were catchy and sophisticated and the album ran a tight 40 minutes.
Just a band on the run.
I'm Gay
Solid 3.3-3.7 All songs bring cool unique sounds- album has no boring spots
Enjoyed ram more
Surprisingly fun listen. Jet slaps. 3.5-4
Extremely strong start with the first few songs being all absolutely great, but the spark does seem to find a bit in the middle to near the end, with Mamunia Picasso's Last Words being pretty boring. However, the final song is a pretty great bop and ends the album on a high enough note to ensure a four star. This album was very good, but I still wish Ram was the Linda and Paul project that made it to this list.
I quite like this album. It is a good story and rather creative. 7/10
Un disco muy bien ambientado, con buenas canciones y voces. Prácticamente no lo conocía. Me ha gustado, aunque ya me estaba haciendo una idea de cómo iba a sonar
3.7
Great album from a great artist.
Vibes. Gives a Beatles experimental feeling. Fav Songs No words and Picassos last word
Every song on this album is great. The production, songwriting, structure, instrumentation were all fantastic. I’m always impressed with McCartneys continuous ability to create music that is relevant to the time it’s made. The A side of the album does seem to overshadow the second half a little, but the last two songs were able pull me back in. 4/5
Cet album nous prouve que la version ailée de Paul Mc Cartney est bien meilleure que sa version normale. Ses plumes sont ravissantes, et ses vols majestueux nous emplissent de joie tout au long de l'album.
Great stuff with a very strong start with first two songs.
Great album, lost of fun moments especially the title track. Can get a bit silly/ poppy
Better than I expected.
Some great songs 3.5+/5
Has an overall positive, "Let's go!" vibe to it. I had already heard Mamunia before. It's an absolutely beautiful song. The rest of the album is fun and you can tell everyone had fun working on it. There's no doubt that Paul McCartney is a genius and I wasn't at all surprised by how impressive musically it is. some of the songs I enjoyed (aside from Mamunia) were: Bluebird, Let Me Roll It, Nineteen Hundred Eighty Five. I've always been a massive Paul McCartney fan and I'm glad I had the opportunity to listen to this album. It was 41 minutes long, but it felt like 15 minutes. Good times pass quickly, I guess.
Surprisingly good
Never heard this entire album before. I like it a lot.
4.5/5 - Another really great album through and through. Too much focus on sax, and it really feels like McCartney was going for some Steely Dan vibes or that the Wings project was Steely Dan influenced. Standout track is "Jet" - but "Let Me Roll It" is a personal favorite - such a banger.
surprised me
Top tier rock.I need the vinyl
all around good vibes
Pretty good stuff
I’m giving this one 4 stars, but not without hesitation - this is a genuinely great album. “Band on the Run”, “Jet”, and “Let Me Roll It” are spectacular singles; songs I listen to all the time. The rest of the LP is all that keeps it from getting 5 stars: Paul’s “granny music” is on full display and it just doesn’t feel super coherent.
Sounds just like you’d expect if you were getting high in Las Gidi back in ‘73. (‘Let Me Roll It’ aside. Me and that song do not get along at all). On the topic of getting high. When I was at school, there was a (possibly apocryphal) story about Shanna Ranks going to The Shrine during a tour in Nigeria, partaking of the sacred herb with Abami Eda himself, and promptly passing out. Nationalist pride takes strange guises sometimes.
Band on the run - very Paul McCartney👍 Jet- never realised how nonsense lyrics are but still r solid👍 Bluebird - its no blackbird... Mrs Vanderbilt - fun song👍 Let me roll it- Nice song with a reference to George👍 Manunia- another great background to this, a bit too sentimental for me No words - left no impression Picassos last words - another charming story behind the track . Lots of padding including samples from previous songs on the album which l find weird Nineteen hundred and eighty five- bit weird, end bit seems like its trying too hard to be A day in the life's ending but enjoyed overall👍 Biased Paul McCartney Stan but this is very solid 4/5
“Shortly before departing for Lagos, drummer Denny Seiwell and guitarist Henry McCullough left the group. With no time to recruit replacements, McCartney went into the studio with just his wife Linda and Denny Laine. McCartney therefore played bass, drums, percussion and most of the lead guitar parts.” 4.5/5
- Already listened before - Very good, but nowhere near as good as The Beatles' best - Paul has the best overall solo output, but I prefer Plastic Ono Band and All Things Must Pass as individual albums - Fav songs: Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five, Band on the Run, Let Me Roll It
This may sound blasphemous to some, but I like this better than any Beatles album. 4/5
09/26/22 Paul McCartney shows out on this one. First song is an anthem … one of the better leading songs for an album. A lot of memories tied to this album too. Ran twice, didn’t buy a vape after getting rid of it.
Great album that I rarely have listened to. Something that I find fucking hilarious is that for as high production as a Paul McCartney record would be, the most popular song "Band On The Run", the bass guitar (Paul's instrument) is out of tune. This happens sometimes and it's usually OK to be just a little bit because surprisingly with vibrato and layers it tends to make things sound thicker anyway, but here it is SO obvious. The song goes through a few different ~vibes~ and the one where it's most obvious is the big catchy part starting around 2:23. (I think the bass is sharp?) It's a nice album!
I was only really familiar with the first song. Overall not bad for Paul. :)
Ovaj album je jako sladak i pozitivan. Uzivala sam slušajući
Awesome iconic tracks.
Starts off with a bang. BotR and Jet are both superb. Fizzles out from there but is still solid.
This basically sounds like half of a really great Beatles album; it just needs the John Lennon blues-y rockers and a Harrison joint to round it out. But, half of a Beatles album is still fucking incredible, so I really liked this
Nice and chill. Very enjoyable. For the most part not too special though.
I don't know if I've ever listened to this... If I have, it's only been in the recent years of streaming. Could have picked up at any time as it was one of those albums that you pick up for peanuts at every charity shop during the 80s. Kinda crazy but I think the only McCartney albums I own are Give My Regards to Broad Street (still never seen the film though) and the 'All the Best' greatest hits. Also have Frog Chorus on 7" which is a hill I'd die on defending. Erm, it's really good isn't it? Even more impressive via Wikipedia that "McCartney therefore played bass, drums, percussion and most of the lead guitar parts." As I said a couple of days ago on the 'Imagine' write-up, those early 70s albums that the Beatles didn't get to make would have been so good.
Hampered slightly by a weaker second half. Some of the best post-Beatles songs ever written on this album; Jet, Band on the Run, Nineteen Hundred and Eighteen Five.
Enjoyable album. I know- unpopular opinion - but I love Nineteen hundred and eighty five.
Most excellent!
Ye
Its not a "bad" album until you consider that this is the solo album for 1/4 of the number 1 most popular band of all time. When you consider that, it feels like shallow pop and pretty sophomoric in context. Still, decent album with a few top 10 tracks. 4/5
Enjoyable album, and why would it not be? It is Paul McCartney after all, satiating the appetite for The Beatles as both Harrison and Lennon had moved on to solo projects as well with more than moderate success. Title track being the example where Paul is clearly on the verses, where an issue might come up is whether or not Paul McCartney can sing entirely without studio help. Perhaps it is just the recording, but the verses are him, but then the bridges and choruses have certain effects on them, a reverb through a megaphone effect. Small gripe for an otherwise enjoyable album, lessening the blow to fans everywhere that The Beatles were no longer together.
Pretty fucking sick album. Mrs vande bilt and let me roll with it tunes i hadnt heard before. Already loved ninteeen hundred nighty eight
Solid record
Surpreendeu bastante, reconheci os hits e não comparei com os Beatles.
3.6
this album proves Paul McCartney is a musical GENIUS. it’s very 70’s, but in a good way. this album is not forgettable.
4/5
Band on the Run, Jet, Nineteen Eighty-Four and Hellen Wheels highlight this masterpiece by Sir Paul McCartney (or is it Lord now...).
Some great tunes on here, no doubt. I was primed to be so so about this album but it won me over. Fave track - "Let Me Roll It" perhaps, or "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five"
I'm really glad I listened to this. I haven't listened to much Wings, and silly as it might sound to some, I didn't realize that's who did "Band on the Run" or "Let Me Roll It" - the songs were just ubiquitous on classic rock radio, and I never stopped to think about who it was. I may not have appreciated the songs when I heard them on LAZER 101.5 when I was 20 and painting houses with College Pro, but I do appreciate them now. All kinds of interesting twists and turns, great musicianship, compelling songs.
Lots of repetition (band on the run) - some good tunes
Best Paul McCartney solo album. Not his interesting as the best solo Lennon or Harrison album. Classic Rock: The Album. 9/10
Good to revisit this old classic. Definitely Paul McCartney finding his wings, if you'll excuse the pun. While the hit songs are good, I really enjoyed catching up with the lesser known songs. In particular, Mrs. Vandebilt almost feels like a sequel to Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da. I don't even remember No Words - it's kind of a throwaway song, but what struck me is that it sounds like it could be a George Harrison song. Very similar style. And Let Me Roll It sounds a bit John Lennon-inspired. Picasso's Last Words could be a classic but I think Paul got too cute trying to reprise other parts of the album. The highlight for me is the closer, Nineteen Hundred Eighty Five. Epic song, with the closing part of the song reminding me of a cross between A Day in the Life and I Want You (She's So Heavy). I learned some interesting things while reading about this on Wikipedia. First, I didn't realize it was recorded in Nigeria. Second, I didn't realize it was just Paul, Linda and Denny Laine. I always assumed that it was a full band, and I honestly thought the people on the cover were the band. I wonder if Denny Laine ever felt like the odd man out, being over there for 2 months with Paul and Linda. Anyway, great album. I'm going with 4 stars instead of 5, because it's not to the level of any of The Beatles albums from Rubber Soul on, but certainly the pinnacle of Paul's solo career.
It was better than I expected actually
Great album.
Pleasant vocals, vibrant music, some old school charm. "Band on the Run" is an album that's simply enjoyable, with just enough musical variety to perfectly utilise its 40 minute length without overstaying its wellcome or leaving things unsaid. highlights: Nighteen Hundred and Eighty Five
McCartney excel.lint per fi en solitari en el seu millor disc dels 70. La primera cara és de 5 estrelles, gairebé incontestable. La segona afluixa una mica, però continuen sent grans temes de pop que mai s'esgoten en les successives escoltes
Title track is great but rest is more 3.5. Rounded up.
Listened to on 5/9/22 4.5/5 Favorite song: let me roll it, 1985 This album was great - very easy to listen to and some surprise bangers. I also loved Drink to Me but the gaps in the song were distracting and odd. The album had some exotic influences and the McCartney’s being robbed at knifepoint to make it bumped it up to 4.5 in my book
Ah, yes, the second of Paul McCartney's THREE DISTINCT MUSICAL careers. Most people don't even have ONE! This guy has three. Faul quit hogging the musical careers. There are some undeniable hits on here and I have a huge softspot for whatever genre of Rock this is. Easy 4 stars from me, but not quite transcendent enough to get me to 5.
Played over and over on its release. An amusing and varied album with some fine harmonies and solid writing. Listening again after many years it still sounds fine but is not quite there for a full house.
Only a lack of focus stops this from being a great album. The opening salvo of 'Band on the Run', 'Jet' and 'Bluebird' is as good as anything in pop. Sounds fantastic on a decent set of speakers. What more should I add? Does anyone need to observe that Paul McCartney knows his way around a tune? I assume this has been noted in the past.
I’m going 4 stars. I’ve always loved the sing-songy guitar parts and triptych structure of the title track. Like Andy, I had no clue “Jet” was called “Jet.” But how about “Let Me Roll It”? Again, the guitar part you can sing. I’m listening to it once more and I can barely pick out McCartney’s voice. You’d think that would be a negative, but it works. I dig it. But where’s the Weird Al track “Ham on the Run”? Gotta think that writes itself.
Paul McCartney is a musical genius. While his work with Wings doesn't hold up as well as The Beatles work. This is still a very very good album and I enjoyed it a lot. Paul McCartney's bass playing is one of my favorite parts of anything he's on and that is the case on this album as well.
8/10 trails off in the middle.
After watching all 50,000 hours of the 'Get Back' documentary and being amazed at watching Paul McCartney whip out 'Get Back' while waiting for John Lennon to come to work, I acknowledge his genius. But then in the same documentary, you see him churn out utter bullshit like 'Maxwells Silver Hammer' and realize when McCartney is on, he's on. When he's off, he is way fucking off. The same goes for 'Band On The Run'. McCartney's entire post-Beatles career is basically him spouting 'I wrote Hey Jude' and revising common history that everybody knows is fucking bullshit but he does it anyway. Band on the Run, Jet, and Let Me Roll it do the heavy lifting on this album to merit it on a list of 1,001 albums you must listen to, but the rest of the McCartney drivel waters down the splendor of what could be a good album - but this isn't the only McCartney or Beatles album that is guilty of such. The last two tracks, 'Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me)' and 'Nineteen-Hundred and Eighty-Five' are fun little jaunts that you want to hear once and be done with. 4/5.
Best wings album 11/10 better than Beatles For Sale
Two great hit songs, but didn’t find the rest of the album very good. Paul is my least favorite Solo Beatle.
A proper classic album, by the greatest songwriter in the history of recorded music (arguably)
Big Beatles fan but never really dove into Paul’s solo stuff. It’s quite good. Some really good Beatles-ish music
Testing notes
Like that
Begint heel sterk en dan wat slapper/rustiger naar het einde toe. Wel algemeen een prachtig rock album met wereldse invloeden en veel catchy stukken. Eigenlijk 4,5
So much great stuff here. The title track is a perfect opener. It loses a little steam 3/4ths of the way in but easily a stellar release from Paul. Even without the others.
I think this was one of the albums that was always on repeat when visiting my aunts house when I was a kid… I’m very familiar with it but I don’t remember ever listening to it on purpose lol. I think I like it very much even tho it feels a bit silly
Pretty much a one man band by this time - but what a one man band. The opening five tracks are close to perfection. Imagine what this might have sounded like with contributions from his previous band members.
Wings - Band On The Run Jet Set your aircraft on the runway, push all the way up the throttle and let it fly! Wings was my last discovery of Paul McCartney works and somehow one of the greatest to be honest, I really appreciate that it's my first to review when I'll have all the previous albums to listen to after this one. Run was the 1973 word I think, it's all about run in that time, "no one told when to run", "the title of the album", well they didn't know that a band would be on a rush ever after this year. How ironic is that this is the last from a member of the band in the list and it comes at me first, maybe I'm on the run to the other ones, I don't know but I'm not even close to the end and that comforts me along the ride I set. B
Like a post Beatles revival
Some classic tracks, overall not a 5 star one though
enjoyed a lot more than expected
This is such a fun album. I've listened to it more times than I can count, and I still finds new wrinkles to obsess over. McCartney is pretty good.
Disco caps at a 3 for me. This was a slightly above average album. Loved the guitar work.
How is that we've got an album by a Beatle without getting any by the Beatles yet? Luckily Paul is my favorite Beatle (in band or post-band). I was kind of surprised I didn't like this album more. I mean, I love the title track, Jet, and Nineteen Hundred & Eighty Five. But Bluebird and No Words were kind of meh. Even Let Me Roll It - it was good but got kind of boring (could've been 1min shorter). Mrs Vandebilt and Mamunia were both a bit wacky but very cool. Picasso's Last Words also wacky but not nearly as cool. So, a good album but not amazing.
The grand question - were the Beatles ever as good solo as they were together? The answer for Paul McCartney is clear. He's got some great solo tracks, but I don't think he was ever as good solo as he was with the Beatles. But that's not really a fair way to judge his solo albums, is it? A-hem, you must be as good as the Beatles to get a 5. So, I'm trying to listen without thinking, "This dude wrote Let it Be and Hey Jude and so on and so on." Great - Band on the Run, Let Me Roll It, Mrs. Vandebilt, Jet (at first, I classified this as "good not great" but then it got stuck in my head). Good - Mamunia (I really like the African stylings), No Words (sounds like it would fit on ELO's Out of the Blue), Picasso's Last Words, Nineteen-Hundred and Eighty-Five. Bluebird is probably the weakest song on the album - meh 70s soft rock. So, 4/9 great, 4/9 good, 1 meh. Probably makes it a 4.5 and now I'm going to add my bias of "but it's not as good as the Beatles" and round it DOWN to a 4. It just doesn't feel like a 5. Sorry, Paul. You're still awesome to me.
Excellent, catchy with super remarkable and rememberable tracks.
Virker som et godt album med flere gode sange på. 3.5. Kræver flere gennemlyt
Lovely album
A classic.
Band on the Run is a masterpiece of a song in my opinion, just so good!
Good album. Progressive folk. Would listen again.
Very clever man, that McCartney...
Instrumentals and melodies are sick, classic Paul McCartney. Simple lyrics, went sickomode with the nonlexical vocables Favorite songs: Jet, Nineteen hundred
Tof album. Hier en daar een heel leuk nummer. De rest minder memorabel
Paul har så fin röst!! definitivt min bästa bagge. det ska han ha, grabben.
Wow. This album is awesome. Again I found myself completely unfamiliar with the work of the artist, and I seriously dug this album.
The best of post-Beatles McCartney. Best track: Band on the Run
Definitely McCartney. Pretty good.
3.8....have to give 4....for band or, bluebird and others
Pop rock. Melódico. Bastante bueno.
Pretty groovy. Not all bangers, but a few are great
1. "Band on the Run" ***** 2. "Jet" *** good tune, annoying lyrics 3. "Bluebird" - pretty but dull ballad 4. "Mrs. Vandebilt" - Granny song with bouncy 4/4 bass *** 5. "Let Me Roll It" ***** 6. "Mamunia" Lovely fingerpicked guitar, faux-Afirca influence (recorded in Lagos? - wiki says written in Marraskesh) **** 7. "No Words" Quality ballad, nice guitar work **** 8. "Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me)" Picasso as Rocky Raccoon? **** 9. "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five" Cool keyboard-driven buildup, as if written for a movie **** 10. "Helen Wheels" Guitar-based glam/boogie blues, slightly annoying backing vocals (Linda?)
First time really listening to Wings, aside from a few random songs. Great vibes, though a lot of songs felt repetitive or overindulgent. Most Fav: Band on the Run, Bluebird, Mrs Vandebilt, Nineteen Hundred And Eighty Five Least Fav: Picasso's Last Words (Drink to Me), Mamunia
Familiar with the two singles and didn't really expect to enjoy this album as much as I did.
4/5 Nice, happy songs
Really liked it. Funny Beatles vibes
I didn't expect to like it this much! Not all winners, but I like the groove of the entire album.
The album wasn't bad and I love "Let Me Roll It" and personally think it's the best song on the album. 7/10.
Love love love
So nostalgic and gives a fun but subtle feeling.
I have got a slightly irrational love for this album. Takes me back to my teens. Trite lyrics and iresistably poppy tunes not usual my bag at all, but this is a great mood uplifter. Love it still though not played for years.
Title track is a huge classic but also love Bluebird and Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five. Like how there's call backs to previous tracks scattered throughout, at some points it verges on psychadelic
Not man on the run.
an all time favourite of mine
Classic 70s pop, packed with hooks. Great cover - Parky and his showbiz pals, only missing Tarby!
Wow, why have I never listened to this?
This is a generous 4, I really liked that album at some point but it didn't hit me as hard this time around mrs vanderbilt still slaps
This feels like Beatles-adjacent music for people that thought the band got a little too "out there" by the end, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Band on the Run starts the show with a one-two punch of show-stoppers that brute force this 3-star album into drawing 4, though that isn't to say it doesn't have its moments beyond the singles. The final two tracks (which contain reprisals of the singles, ironically) are pretty strong, too, and even some of the middle tracks are enjoyable when they aren't bringing in too much of the schmaltz—Bluebird and Mamunia are the low points of the record and only serve to tell me that McCartney has no idea what the weather is like in LA. Not quite the best thing a Beatle was involved with after the 60s, but in Paul's defense, it's pretty hard to top the Simpsons in its golden age.
I'm always torn with McCarthy. I love the Beatles and I want to love a McCarthy album, but they alway seem to come up short. This one is the best of the bunch though.
....... pretty songs - mixed grill
At the time, this was considered Paul McCartney's first great record since the Beatles broke up. There are a couple great ones post-Beatles but pre-BOTR, in my opinion. But this record is truly great. And the story of all the band quitting except Paul, Linda, and the other guy - that's cool too. Oh! And his lyrics/arrangements book was stolen pretty much as soon as they arrived in the place (can't remember the exotic locale) where it was recorded. So, as much as Paul McCartney could experience adversity at this point in his career, I like to imagine that helped create this masterpiece.
Great album. Not much else to say.
I really enjoyed this album. It was before I was of age, and while I had heard some of the songs on their previously, I hadn’t heard the whole work. Reading the background on it was enlightening as well.
Now I can say for sure where I know all these classics from.
I can't believe I've never listened to this album given how I obsessed over the Beatles when I was younger
Really eclectic mix of songs on this album. No duds, but only a couple of really good songs (Band on the Run, Jet). Worth a listen though, some of the songs seem like they would grow on you.
I'm not sure how I feel about the reprises from the earlier songs that punctuate the latter half of this record. Otherwise, this is full of great moments that remind me why I love PM
solid album. every song is good
August 26, 2021 This was good! Some tracks are catchier than others but I liked the changes in tone and structure. A solid listen.
I'm hardly consistent in my scoring, but I really enjoyed this album
Some classics I recognize like Band on the Run and Let me roll it
I mean he's a Beatle.
Really happy to be giving this 4 stars because I'm not a huge Beatles fan and didn't think id like this. The first and last tracks are absolutely class, with 1985 building up to a big finish back at the first song. Couple of songs that I wasn't mad about like Let Me Roll It but overall great album.
It's better than you think
One of the first albums that I really started listening to. It brings me back to when I was dating my first girlfriend at the age of 16 since we listened to it a lot. There's some great songs in this one. Standouts include Band on the Run, Jet, Mrs. Vandebilt, Let Me Roll It, Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five.
one of my very favorite post-Beatles records. Second only to All Things Must Pass. If "Let Me Roll" it was a b-side then that should be all you need to know
This feels like a transitional album, in a way. It has a solid 70s feel with the twangish guitars, the walking bass, and the like. It feels kind of like sitting on a dock, fishing, on a summer day. Not bad by any means though.
This album is so good. I like that it is a concept album but doesn’t feel like one.
not my vibe, i wouldn't chose to listen to it other than background music tho. LOVE THE SAX IN BLUEBIRD THO. gotta give it a 7/10 because the sax moment.
4 deze kan muziek maken hoor!
McCartney is an amazing songwriter
A strong solo effort by Macca that shows the growth of his style as a solo artist, but still retains plenty of the influence of that earlier group he was with. The hits are undeniable - both the title track and Jet are complex, yet accessible, of their time, yet timeless. A few of the songs could have been deep cuts from Beatles' albums and would therefore have been much better known (Let Me Roll It, Mamunia). The clunkers, for me, are Last Words..., which feels like a White Album reject akin to You Know the Name, Look Up the Number, and those tracks whose sound is too firmly entrenched in the 70s' FM "rock" genre to have much lasting value. I wouldn't mind most of these songs coming up in a random rotation, but there are definitely some I wouldn't ever choose to play. In a 10-pt. system, I have gone with a 7; here, it could be a three or four, but since it's Sir Paul, I rounded up.
This album opened up with probably its strongest track with pretty funky guitars at the beginning transitioning into the chiller band on the run part. I found bluebird, and mrs Vanderbilt to be another standout of the album, both featuring jazzy saxophones and a certain funk to it. The rest of the album however seems to be quite generic 70s rock with lots of acoustic guitar. 7/10
lover it
Hot take: SOS>BOR?
A collection of great songs, with only a few places where it sags.
Much more my style. Great listen.
I didn’t want to like this as much as I did. And yet, I did. Really good stuff. McCartney always was the better songwriter anyway.
really enjoyed this record
(what a great melodic salve after the eardrilling of the Velvet Underground) A handful of classics from my childhood sound as good as I remember and the title track alone almost gives this a 4 on its own. To me the best of this matches well with Paul's better Beatles tunes, and although it falters just a bit near the end I love the weird sci-fi-ish "1985" as a closer. 8/10 4 stars
medio zzz pero es chill.me gusta para hacer las tareas
Fav songs: Band on the run, Bluebird, Picasso's Last Words
Very, very, close to 5 stars
Solid album, well composed
Really enjoyed this.
Great album! I have the live version
Very good album by a very good Beatle. Thought I had this on vinyl, was disappointed when I looked and I didn’t. In relistening, I remembered how much I enjoyed this.
Interesting how 1001 Albums lists the artist as Paul McCartney but Spotify lists it as Wings - 1001 Albums knows why people are interested in the album. I was surprised to recognize the first two songs. Jet was a great track and Mrs Vandebilt was a good surprise as well
Sometimes math is a bit depressing. I realized the last time I heard this entire album was probably 43 years ago. After that first listen, I came back fir the title track on a regular basis - adding it to my saved Spotify list early last year. “Jet” is a decent pop tune that I hear a lot, but generally not on purpose. Rest of the album pretty average. “Mrs.Vandebilt” is a good two minute song that runs 4 1/2 minutes. I got excited about the guitar solo at the end of “Mumonia”, only to sadly realize it was the fade out. I also like most of “Nineteen Hundred and Eighty Five”, but thought the slowish middle interlude detracted. I think it’s a 3.5, but rounding up on the stellar “Band on the Run”
Erstaunlicher grower! Big 4.3
I liked it. At some point it hit me, something that I hadn’t ever really put to words, as with all Beatles stuff, they seem to rely heavily on their vocals. I was especially thinking that about 75% of the way through, but then ended up liking some of their last songs.
Suffragette appears in songs more often than I would have thought. Great album.
4 if just for how good 3-4 tracks are
Great album, couple of duds but full of tunes
I found this album to have such character and colour. It has almost its own genre and authenticity, despite being pop rock on the surface. The production is awesome, and very Martin-esque!
This has three of my favorite post-Beatles McCartney songs on it.
fun album. jet is a great song
Mycket bra skiva! Hade fått för mig att Wings var ett mkt senare projekt av McCartney, men det var ju i princip direkt efter Beatles. Bästa låten: Band on the run. Mrs Vanderbilt och Let me roll it också toppen. Gillar inte Mamunia, men annars ett genombra album. Hade bara hört singeln Band on the run tidigare. Hade även i huvet blandat ihop REO Speedwagons kanonlåt "Take it on the Run" med "Band on the run". När jag först tänkte på titeln "Band on the run" så såg/hörde jag framför mig REO Speedwagons låt :)
Super cool, bluebird is a bop
An enjoyable album. Clearly band on the run is the shining star, but there's enough quirkiness and melody that carries through it to be a very fun listen.
Pretty good a lot of "the hits"
Some quality songwriting, definitely adding to the ‘listen more’ pile
I can’t believe as a Beatles fan I’ve never listened to this album. It was incredible.
I listened to it 5 times. Really good, lots of bops
A found very interesting songs in this album
