Reviews (page 13 of 13)
prolly not my vibe, (pop rock??) but wait the first songs seems to be a bop. not sure if i’d be repeating.
Some of the beats were pretty cool, but the singing ruined this album for me. And this is coming from someone who loves trip hop.
The music is good lyrics are trash.

Just did not stand out to me and am I the only one who thought every female vocalist on this was… not great? I’ll just listen to Portishead, thanks. I’d welcome an instrumental version of this record though, for sure.
Good beats/ambient for background work music. Mix of reggae, electronic, hip hop, blues. I only knew a few songs by M.A. (Teardrop), so this was a good exposure to more of their stuff. Highlights: -One Love -Blue Lines -Hymn of the Big Wheel
Definitely different, and kind of fun, but I found it a bit repetitive and not super interesting.
Not really my cup of tea...little too aggressive
not very interesting
More edm/house type of music. Not bad, it’s pretty good, I guess
The tracks featuring Shara Nelson on vocals were pretty good. The rest...not so much. I might like this if I were into dance music. Best track: Unfinished Sympathy.
Un poco aburrido, no me gustó
Eh

Best song was a Curtis mayfield cover
Booooooring
Most of the things I hate about 90s music all wrapped up in one place.
How did this get sorted into the wrong list? It's 1991, none of this is unique or a debut of a huge global band ive ever heard of. Glimmer of hope with song Blue Lines. You get a star and you get a- no that's it. One star
ehhhh. movie sound music
A cold pancake on a Tuesday morning.
Interesting genre, had a nice sound to it but not really my taste.
ehh
I just could not get into this one and felt myself wishing it would be over soon. UK pop is just not my thing.
I like their better known albums alright, but the compositions on this one just seemed too aimless, if not random.
I wasn’t really into this. Felt like clothes shopping house music. It doesn’t even sound advanced for the time period. I could just be in a salty mood, but this one I didn’t get.
English Electronica, again, yet, and still. And another 1 star. Enough!
I didn't even wanna finish this album. Not for me.
Classic Coldplay.

Did not like this at all!!!
Didn’t like barely listened
only listened to a couple songs oops - will have to come back
I wasn’t feeling this one.
This was everything I don’t like about music. Boring, repetitive, slow, and soft. Many albums on this list have been one or all those and still been good. This one not so much
Meh

Ummm
listening when: half on the way to pilates and half on my afternoon walk thoughts: first album from someone i hadn’t heard of and i hated this from song one. i googled the genre and it says they were pioneers for hip hop electro. not the vibes fr fr rating: 1/10
It's a no from me, dawg.
not a fan, not my style
Snore. I know trip hop is technically probably different than EDM, or maybe it’s a subgenre of it or something, but I don’t really care cause this is so damn boring for me in the same way that EDM is. 1.5/5
No me mata.
I don’t get it. This was awful. Most of the songs sounded like SNL parodies of 90s R&B. So many of the lyrics were just too cheesy to be taken seriously.
It's amazing how you can listen to something & have little to no reaction to it. I know what I like & it ain't this. Didn't care for lyrics or style of rap. The beats were meh & did little to nothing for me. I feel nothing for this. I just don't like it. No musical attraction whatsoever. 1
Massive attack of shit.
This apparently blew some damn minds in the ‘90’s judging by what I’ve read, ranking this album as top in the last century. I guess it’s a “you had to be there” kind of thing because the music didn’t do much for me. There was a nice “Fidler on the Roof” reference in “Daydreaming”. “Hymn of the Big Wheel” I liked but too little, too late. That’s about all. Not one I’ll revisit.
Boring album. It must be #1001. It was uninteresting. I would go out of my way to not listen to it again.
Not really for me
I am sure this is somebody’s style, but it is not mine.
Poo poo.
Boring
1,3/5
Did not enjoy any of this
i hated this. will try to come back sometime and like it.
Dreary rubbish
Massive attack of boredom
Massive attack on my ears
My wife has been a huge MA fan for forever, so I know all this tracks pretty well. My issue with it, and trip-hop in general, is thats no real highs and lows. Its all pretty much right the middle and very samey sounding.
3/1001 :: Massive Attack - Blue Lines Heard before? ❌ Would I revisit? ❌ Rating: 2 Fav Tracks: ——— I’m here to tell you I tried. It wasn’t the first…could be the last. Thing is “Massive Attack” is such a great name. But I want them to be a 90’s post hardcore band or something and they are far from that. I like Portishead but maybe Trip-Hop isn’t my thing. I know there are people that love this album but this vibe is not for me. You folks like this?
did not like this
Some of the beats are nice but the vocals throughout are really terrible
Really struggle to see where this album fits in among a general audience. It’s electronic but not the kind you’d play in a club. It’s rap, but with no real political or gang connection, and no drive or passion behind the lyrics. It’s lowkey and lo-fi for much of the album, but not so much so to become an album of passive listening (I couldn’t listen to this while I relax/study). I simply did not enjoy it. There was too much going on for it to feel like I could just groove to it in the background, but far too little going on to reward an in depth, proper listen. Vocals were fine but boring and repetitive by the end. Rapping was awful; sounded like they just picked the first guys walking by the studio to lay down some bars who’d never rapped before in their lives. Songs were far too long. Nothing catchy, nothing memorable, just a waste of time. Safe from Harm (5/10) One Love (4/10) Blue Lines (3/10) Be Thankful for What You’ve Got (5/10) Five Man Army (3/10) Unfinished Sympathy (5/10) Daydreaming (3/10) Lately (4/10) Hymn of the Big Wheel (3/10) 3.9/10
Trash
Massive shit
Lasted almost two minutes of the first song before I had to turn it off
Meh. It’s not bad. It’s just, nothing.
Fine but I don't like trip hop
Well that was.. boring? I’m not really sure how else to describe this record. The entire time I spent listening to it, I just couldn’t wait for it to end. I found most of the lyrics to be uninspired and predictable, any hooks were mediocre at best, and everyone playing and singing and rapping sounded almost as bored as me. 1*
I listened to two songs fully, then skimmed the rest of the record. Yep. I hate everything about this. I don't like synthetic pop music as a rule, but add vapid technical show-off lyrics, and drench it all in 1990s mainstreem cool.... ick ick ick. 0 stars or one if I must.
so many of these are just stressful to listen to. I get that people can really enjoy them, but its just not for me
Massive piece of 💩. Its like a long running SNL 🍆in a🎁 vibe.
Not good. Annoying and british
Nisu mi nimalo napeti, baš nimalo. Eventualno prva pjesma mi ima par dobrih trenutaka, ovo ostalo mi je strašno dosadno, lejm melodije, wannabe rep većinu albuma. Ne leže mi jbg. 1/5, 1.5/10
Nope
Like the world’s longest elevator ride or a walk through a strip mall. The whole thing is just so uninspired to me. Like if easy listening was a bit too intense for you, put on this album. Yeah this is the 2nd massive attack album I’ve heard and I just hate their music.
The attack? Massive. A very memorable band name. I feel like I haven’t heard one note of their music and I know that name so well. I wonder if they’ll be cool and aggressive. Or at least assertive. Or at least not terrible. Only one way to find out. DJ, spin this puppy up. Massive attack is about to make .0000004 cents off of this user. Oh god. The vocals and record scratches. This thing is shit. And it doesn’t pick up. Let’s hope it’s an intro, because we have attacked nothing. These are joke vocals right? The elevator reggae mixed with whatever these vocals are make this one of the most horrible songs I’ve ever heard. That’s a low bar. The cool Godzilla horn stabs take it out of that gutter, but the passage with the vocals? Absolute bottom of the barrel. If I’m going to hold 50 year old divorced white women to task for doing terrible vocal jazz on instagram after discovering polyamory, these guys need to be slammed for this too. It’s not that bad but it’s not that good! Gangster Whitewalls would’ve made me turn this off, but I have to remember the project. Digging the scene with a gangster lean. Remember the project. Remember the project. Remember the project. All my loyal readers will remember the SpongeBob movie and the scene in which the king takes off his crown, and that one fish screams BALD BALD BALD, until he puts it back on. Replace “BALD,” with “WHITE,” and it is echoing throughout my head throughout this album but apparently there is a black guy in the band. So I’m wrong. But this fucking abominable Shaggy tribute makes me want music to be done. Remember Biggie Cheese though? He was good. This has 143,000,000 + plays at press time. No words can accompany a statistic like that. I feel embarrassed listening to this. University project levels. Caterwaul over this dumb beat. This is sounding more and more like a prank. How much can we get away with type of thing. How does this emanate from your soul like music should? This is nothing. I can get behind a hymn to Big Wheel. The hapless Spider-Man villain who was unable to pilot his large wheel and crashed into the sea. Any sort of hymn or even a somber maritime dirge to him would be appreciated. However, here we are listening to an atrocious song that has nothing to do with poorly received comic book bad guys or even good music. Another failure, this time where the eagles fly, on a mountain high. An abhorrent, wretched mess from start to finish. I felt myself cringing at the rapping that would be more home appearing in the home videos of an upper middle class white family’s Christmas party 2001. Every song was a skip and while there were moments of alright rhythm sections, any foray into lyricism or vocalization took this album, along with my screaming carcass, past the gutter into the core of the earth, where I was scalded for all eternity and forced to observe life through a molten hourglass. Hell is real. 0-0.5 HIGHLIGHTS: Thinking about Big Wheel and also Biggie Cheese at one point. That was fun.
Not for me. The name of the band is an apt description of what my eardrums withstood.
Sadly just not my thing and I couldn’t get through it!
Day two! Massive Attack. It felt like some of the tracks dragged on for quite a bit, especially 'Five Man Army'. I liked the beginning of that one but I thought the song was over when I had 2 minutes to go. 'Daydreaming' was honestly downright cringe. There was a one song though that I caught myself bopping to, that being 'Be Thankful For What You've Got'. So it wasn't all bad. But still, 1/5.
Meh
“Plan to go to America when I get Visa card. But gettin a Visa card nowadays isn’t hard.”
Scheisse...
Considering this to be Massive Attack's music is absurd. https://open.spotify.com/track/2KvUzdKxcvGEHYcUgb9Nkc
This was awful. Horrible voice.
1 seems harsh, but I really didn't enjoy anything on this album. The rap wasn't interesting, the singing was underwhelming, and the music was boring. I'm just glad it wasn't too long.
I really tried. I just hate music like this. I think trip hop might me my most despised genre, even over jazz.
Another DNF.
This album mostly feels like background music. Maybe I'm missing something, but this really isn't for me. It was difficult to listen to and keep interested.
could i write poetry to this? n
1 star. Nothing worth noting here.
Please no more trip-hop. This is terrible. The lyrics are completely juvenile. I don't need a genius songwriter for everything I listen to, but this is painfully bad. The tracks drag on, there's nothing interesting about them, especially not for the length that they run. It would be fine if this was on in the background, I guess, but I could choose many things better.
Sounds like a 90s movie soundtrack, not in the good way
Cool but not my genre
No no no
This is the second time I’ve listened to an entire album of English Trip Hop—the first one being Connected by Stereo MCs, also via this exercise. I know Massive Attack has some mainstream recognition, at least insofar as you sometimes hear them talked about outside of England, but I tell ya, if someone had put on Blue Lines and told me it was another Stereo MCs record I wouldn’t have known any better. I’ve heard Two Albums A British Psylocibin Enthusiast Must Hear Before They Die, and I’m all good now.
Best song: Be Thankful For what you've got Vibes: Vintage small british underground dance club
Meh, also felt like moody dark restaurant music. Liked it a little but really tired in me quickly. 1.5
Meh
I mean it was a 2 but the lyrics are a .5
Never again
Electronic music never hits the spot for me, and this was no exception.
Before listening: Alright, I'm totally ignorant on this one. I've heard of Massive Attack but I couldn't tell you anything about them - their popular songs, where they're from, what genre they're in. I think from memory they're kinda like new punk from the 80s; but they could be a do wop band and I wouldn't know. I'm really looking forward to this one. After listening: I just ... don't get it. What genre are they? I understand eclectic music, but are they rap, reggae, or soul or what? I liked some of the tracks here but most of them I was like what the hell? I do feel The Gorillaz kinda copied their style, so there's that I suppose.
Like fortsatt ikkje Massive Attack
Overall -it’s giving 90s flick movies -this entire album feels like someone accidentally spilled lyrics over hold music -it’s albums like this that make me wonder who the fuck let this get made -imagine the confidence you have to have to release 9 5 minute songs, like turn off his mic -this album made me like angry Safe from Harm -it’s already feeling like a no One Love -absolutely not -these lyrics are absolutely ridiculous -THESE LYRICS ARE RIDICULOUS -this is awful Blue Line -ok -no Five Man Army -this is ok -hate the ending
Wow, this is REALLY bad. Amazing that this band developed so much that they could produce an album good as Mezzanine.
Did not like the different guest singers.
The best thing on here was the first track, everything else was either boring or just not my thing. The first track was at least kind of groovy. 1.5/5
to be fair everyone was wankered in the 90's but all the rest of ye's dont have that excuse!
Did not like it,
Blech...1991...Why is everyone so obsessed with electric bass and keyboards...because that's what's new and hot at the time. Trip hop is such an aspirational title for this. I kinda get the trip part but hop? more like weird jazz or reggae. The lyrics are pretty forgettable as well which is kinda where I'm at on this one...1991 a time I'd rather forget.
Like they couldn’t settle on a sound… in any singular song. Some beats would sound okay then it swapped quickly to sound like jargon
i just don't like massive attack.
I'm in disbelief that this album was labeled as one the greatest albums of all time. I feel like I'm Mr. Skinner saying "Am I so out of touch? No! It's the children who are wrong." This album is just not good... To me, of course... Apparently it's well received by a lot of critics... It is a conglomeration of genres that are on the lowest rung on my musical taste ladder. I'm sure as their career evolved, they got better? Maybe? I mean, apparently this album is amazing.. So could they get better than that? Ha! They've been around awhile... I'm sure I heard something by them in HMV but I wouldn't know how to pick them out from any other artist of the same genre. To me it's very generic and nothing screams to me that this song or album is. Massive Attack. I don't know.. I could keep pushing my opinion on this album. But we all know music is subjective... So my opinion only matters to me.. And with that, this album was a massive disappointment. 1/5
Meh
Never been a fan of Massive Attack. Their lilting/dragging style makes me search for the 'skip' button every time they come up in a shuffle. Pass.
Not my cup of tea
I think this album probably really benefits from a chronological listening, because as is, separated from its contemporaries, it just kind of falls flat for me. But the review says this is the first "trip hop", so congrats for that. By fall flat, I don't mean that it's bad, just, for the most part, uninteresting. There are flashes of brilliance, though, like the guitar riff in Be Thankful For What You Got. Hymn of the Big Wheel was probably my favorite song.
Did not enjoy at all. Moments where I thought it could have a cool section but changed or got worse immediately
Very 90s. Not in a good way
complete trash compared to their later stuff, talk about growing pains
Not a fan of this one. Their Mezzanine album is better tho.
Garbage
massive attack of boredom. I gave it a chance but was pretty underwhelmed. The album took me back to my younger days when I first heard it as some music does, but unfortunately I relived that mood of being kind of unimpressed for the most part...
I hadn't heard of this album or Massive Attack before this, so going in fresh. Unfortunately, this is the first 1/5 I've had to give here. The whole thing is just very dull to my ears, an electronic beat with some English blokes occasionally attempting to rap on top of. I listened to every second of it, but couldn't wait for it to be over a couple of tracks in.
Reading the Wiki one might think that you would be on the yellow brick road to audio nirvana not plodding into some sparse English flat in 91 the only yellow here is a brummy git named Steve who has pissed himself on the couch after shooting too much golden brown between his toes. Just like Steve I won't be back.
Did not age well. Flaky and outdated. Kitch in some aspects. It is a no in 2022. I guess it was good then…

Not my type of music. Might need more listens.
nah, not my type of music
Whoof. Where's the house theme song?
Almost had to choose did not listen because I nearly fell asleep. Boring.
...boring
Not really my thing. Tried to get through it but didn't enjoy.
adjacent to something i would really like
Didn't enjoy this one at all. Vocals really killed it for me.
This feels like nothing.
I liked the first song but not the rest. Reggae/funk/rap
Oh cool a band named Massive Attack with a fire warning symbol from the early 90s, this will be a fun pop-punk or alt rock album! NOPE, this is very slow lo-fi electronic R&B/Reggae/Hip-hop with some weak drum machine beats, Bri'ish rapping, or very high falsetto singing like they're trying to sound like Prince but doing a terrible job. This would probably be a 2 if the branding of the album gave me a heads up of what to expect, but it's a 1 because I was excited for some 90s rock and then had to listen to whatever the hell this was.
fan vad trist detta var eller?
Bah, que baita bosta...
massive attack to my ears seriously wtf?
This is just not my thing. The instrumentals are fine but the tracks just draaaaaag. It genuinely felt like "One Love" was ten minutes long. Everything gets very repetitive to the point it's annoying.
Not for me. Boring, every song drags and little variation. Somehow enjoyed it less than lady in satin
pretty boring tbh
This one is lame
Not my genre of music at all

This has ruined my day
Not my favorite. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
old, definitely trippy for it's time. little disjointed but at least it was short
Melodic, classic. Varied. Andrea likes this a lot. Bittersweet symphony a timeless banger.
