Blue Lines

Nothing really stood out to me here, in that it played like 1 1/2 times before I noticed. I didn't mind any of it, but it's not my regular fare.

Why wasn't this Mezzanine instead? I acknowledge I'm biased because Mezzanine was the first Massive Attack album I listened to, on the recommendation of probably some LiveJournal internet friends who didn't actually read my blog I was just fascinated with them because they were people who lived in cities and were older than me, but I really didn't think that this album was as varied and as interesting overall as Mezzanine. Another history lesson that I would know about if I had the book? A mystery for the ages.

Overall a decent album. Some fun and engaging beats without being too repetitive from song to song. Though it does fall victim to the same trapping that every electronic song seems to have: the songs themselves are way too long. There is no reason any of these songs should be longer than 3 mins. Which is a shame, because good songs can become annoying very fast if they go on without a purpose. Top tracks: Safe From Harm, Unfinished Sympathy

Finally remember what these guys remind me of - Flight of the Convords. Except this is not funny. At least this record is a little better than the last one. I suppose I’ll give it a 3. Just finished. Changed my mind. This is a 2. So corny.

Man...my hate-on for electronic music continues. Trip-hop just isn't my thing. I wish I could love Massive Attack. I know they're hugely influential and legends at what they do, but this album bored me. It was a chill listen, I guess, it just felt long even at only 45 minutes. The final track was my favourite of the bunch. But the whole thing just felt sort of underwhelming and monotonous.

I don’t have much to say about this, other than the “2” on the album cover is rather prophetic. I kind of liked the groove of the title track.

I can appreciate that this albums starts the creation of the new trip-hop sub genre, but overall it was a pretty boring listen. Some of the sounds and grooves were interesting, but guest vocalist Horace had a vibrato so wide you could drive a semi through it, which was more annoying to listen to than some of the slow tempos. I’ll pass. More like passive attack.

Was expecting a lot more out of this based on the way some artists point to them as inspiration. But didn’t hear what I expected to hear, and was mostly just bored.

Well every song sounded unique, but that isn't necessarily a good thing. Honestly just a pretty boring listen that I don't need to hear again. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)

Blue Lines, Five Man Army, Daydreaming, and Hymn of the Big Wheel are all great tracks; however, the other songs, especially the first two, are borderline painful to listen to.

I think Massive Attack's music had more of an upbeat, active vibe than I thought it would have but it was still tough for me to sink my teeth into it. The addition of vocals provided a layer on top but I've gotten so tired of rapping for some reason.

Not a big fan of electronica, including of the hip-hop variety. This was still a pleasant enough listen, but not one I'm likely to want to return to.

Another one that I knew nothing about going in. It was OK to listen to as background noise and better than I thought it was going to be when I first started it but I don't think I would play it again.

Definitely a record that sounds like 30 plus years ago. That’s not a bad thing or a good thing, just not my thing. Lyric sampling Beatle George was unexpected & appreciated. Great name for a band.

To be honest it reminded me of ASMR get focused music playlists and the music is fairly undistinguishable from one song to the next. Except the House theme

Forgettable

I understand that this album was groundbreaking in its time and place, and in my opinion the blending of electronic, rap, and reggae among other genres kind of works. However, this album is absolutely not to my taste and the vocals do almost nothing for me. 2.3 stars

This should have been a single, with Track 1 on the A-Side, and Track 7 on the B-Side. I thought this would be pretty good after the first track, but yet again, British pop disappointment began to run through my veins. With a band name like Massive Attack, I'm expecting some hard-hitting s***. This was not that.

I swear to you everytime I get an electronic album I really try. For its efforts though I will say this album is a rather funky affair. Even if it isn’t for me.

This has a decent score on this site and I don't get it. I didn't hate this one like I did Protection but that still isn't saying much. The music itself is okay but the singing is annoying and sounds dated. This sounds like the 90s in a way I don't care for at all, but if you told me this was influential, I would believe it.

My recollection was of a better album. There are only 2 tracks of note. 1 an all time classic. The rest are so weak lyrically.

I like massive attack. But this album didn't do it for me. I generally like this kind of music. Their 98 album is better.

Not usually the kind of music I'd listen to, and would probably not listen again. The effects of the music were kinda cool and groovy but the songs got repetitive and I found didn't really have any substance or anything I could connect with. The vocal delivery was strange, at time I felt the vibrato was weird(oscillating in sound rather than pitch? It was just strange) but I suppose the phrasing was creative? I didn't really enjoy this album but I do think the music was interesting in a way.

2.5 stars. A little bit slow and downbeat. Gets a bit reggae-ish at times. Standout is "Unfinished Sympathy".10

I've enjoyed Massive Attack albums but this one was not one of them.

Its a unique album but I can't say this sound aged well for me. Mainly the vocal style was not for me. Interesting production though.

The album cover is pretty modern feeling. At first breathe, I immediately disliked this album. Songs oscillated between 1 and 2 stars in enjoyment for me. SOME of the raps were enjoyable to me but much more of the album made me genuinely angry. I truly hated One Love and Five Man Army. Be Thankful For What You've Got reminded me of Sade. I did not mind Daydreaming.

I didn't love this. I would occasionally find myself getting lost in a groove but then the vocals would distract me. I can't see myself dancing to this or it playing in a bar/restaurant or even seeing this live.

I had higher hopes for this album and was left a bit disappointed. I recognize and understand its importance in the development of the trip hop genre, as it sounds like something that came 5+ years later than it actually did. But I just did not enjoy it too much.

I was done after the first two minutes of each track. Five Man Army is pretty good, but has 3 filler minutes at the end.

Sounded like I was in a dark underground club...the kind with red lighting, fancy cocktails, and def jam poetry. Hit me right off the bat but I quickly grew tired of the singing and wanted more good beats. Finished with a pretty good one but overall not leaving an impression. Establishing their own sound but not sure I'm in. I love Angel from Snatch so expected more from this...

Album 291 of 1001 Massive Attack - Blue Lines Rating : 2 / 5 Offers more than many of the "Electronica" albums but still just "meh".

The vocals and lyrics are almost too cheesy to bear in the first two songs. Does every song just repeat the same lyrics over and over while mostly just playing the same beat in the background? Every now and then I hear a cool change to the beat or a new sample or something but overall it’s just the same thing over and over. This would be pretty decent study or work music because it's smooth and chill and repetitive but I can't see myself ever wanting to listen to it intentionally. I've never been much of a trip hop fan though. Five Man Army stands out.

This album was fine but not what I was imaging based on the group's name and artwork. I'd never heard Massive Attack before, I knew the name but always assumed they were more on the punk side of things. I know it's no good to judge a book by it's cover but I was really hoping for more of a unique punk hip-hop vibe to this album and what it is is just real mellow, kind of boring (in my opinion) trip hop. I didn't hate anything on this album, just found it rather unoriginal and too similar from track to track. Standout Tracks: Blue Lines, Be Thankful for What You've Got, Hymn of the Big Wheel

Maybe I’m just not in a trip-hop mood, but this album is mostly a miss for me. Some songs stand out, like Blue Lines. But other songs, like One Love, are like nails on a chalkboard. I appreciate some of the components of this album - Shara Nelson’s vocals, for instance - but others, like the relentless and unchanging drumbeat throughout, keep me on edge. I feel jittery listening to the album and I can't relax into the music. I don’t think that’s the intention. There is a unique sound to this album and it seems like it should be enjoyable - but it isn't, for me.

Pleasant with nice sampling. Rapping is a bit odd, though. Stratus right up front was a surprise. Good background music for mundane tasks but that's about it for me anyway. Maybe I haven't heard the right Trip Hop album yet or I just don't get into this style of music.

This is better than some techno in this list. It's let repetitive and doesn't have the same bpm in every song. But there aren't any stand outs here for me either.

Never clicked with this genre of ambient background music, always sounds like they built the foundations of a song and didn't add any of the ideas that are actually interesting. Unfinished sympathy is by far the best song and is the only time this approach seems to come together in any way. Wasn't a painful listen but it's just so dull.

I was a bit disappointed with this - I'm a big fan of Heligoland, it was one of my study-in-the-library albums. None of the songs on this first release caught my attention at all, sadly. Unfinished Sympathy is decent.

Agree with the other guys. It's just not that interesting. Fine as background music I guess but nothing more. Unfinished symphony by far the best track.

Meh. I liked the rhythm, didn't like the rapping. First song reminded me of Blast Off by Gesaffelstein. Though there wasn't a climax in the song, which is frustrating to listen to after all the build up.

It's okay musically. May be a bit chaotic at times (especially for the early 90s) but it doesn't really appeal to me. Not a fan of the singing, the production is good I guess, but the style/instrumentation is not appealing to me. A solid 2/5

This is kind of boring to me and really isn't my thing. In the 90s I thought this was what music would sound like in the future, but now it just sounds like a 90s sci Fi movie soundtrack throwback...something like Strange Days.

Definitely ahead of its time - but I just can't shake that Massive Attack are one of those bands I should absolutely love based on my listening preferences... but more often than not it just washes over me. That's usually most true of the rapping/vocal tracks, in particular the title track - I think that's where this record is held back and shows its age a little. Unfinished Symphony is a solid gold classic, though.

This album was an odd one. An unusual mix of samples, hip hop beats and off beat lyricism, I could get why this album was well received in the early 90s. Compared to a lot of the other hip hop coming out at this time in America, it’s clear that this is America’s genre. Some lyrics played off of like nursery rhymes and generic one liners like “don’t put all your eggs in one basket” and it just came across at corny. Overall worth the listen but according to their Wikipedia, the next few albums get better so maybe I’ll give them another listen. Also, I know the bands name is “Massive Attack” and one of the dude’s names is Daddy G, but there is a song where the words say “oh daddy” and then say “massive” really loud a couple of times. It just caught me off guard is all and is probably not supposed to be funny, but I laughed. Stand out track: Safe From Harm (female singer needs a raise, she was my favorite part)

I think I would prefer this without vocals, it's got cool beats though. The reggae parts made me remember Skindred and find out they released an album not long ago (and it's a solid one, give it a shot if you're in a nu-metal wave again)

The first few songs I immediately hated everything. But to be honest they got slightly better and more tolerable. Not anywhere close to something I’d listen to often, but to the point where one of the songs got a little stuck on my head. They definitely progressed as the album went on.

It wasn't bad, but every song was so different I couldn't even tell what genre it was supposed to be.

Diamonds in the back, ludacris song was the best one on album. The rest were forgettable.

Showed everything misled about the early 90s scene in Britain. All style no substance, godawful rapping and cringeworthy lyrics. Unfinished Sympathy was a killer single at least. A dissapointing record.

Ugh. Our second from Massive Attack, and it's also not Mezzanine. I just looked and apparently we don't get Mezzanine on here at all, which is their most memorable album. What's with that? I sort of liked the other album, this one was a snoozefest. "One Love" was laughable. I almost made it through the album without saving a singe track, that's how forgettable this was. I can't say it was terrible, but it's just too dated for me. Meanwhile Mezzanine isn't even on this list. If it were up to me, this one (and possibly the other as well) would be cut from the list, to be replaced by Mezzanine and some more meaningful album from another artist. Boring. Favorite tracks: Lately. Album art: Their name on a hazard label. Looks like the kind of "photoshop" I do on Paint that's purposely bad. 2/5

notes - debut album by massive attack - attributed as the first trip hop album/bristol sound - blending elements of the british electronic music scene with a slower spookier aesthetic - the music definitely has a consistent mood - the vocals…. not so much - a lot of the vocals and lyrics i felt distracted from the songs with a couple exceptions - would have preferred this album instrumental which is not something i often think fav - be thankful for what youve got - vocals actually felt like they fit here least fav - one love - the keyboard throughout this song is quite annoying & i feel like the vocals dont fit the vibe 2.5/5 - not that mind-blowing but a taste of what’s to come

Thought I would like it more but was not what I was expecting

This was all over the place and hard to really get into and vibe with.

i didn’t find this album terribly creative or innovative. sure, it was the first of its kind in the trip hop genre, but it relied all too much on electronic music. it just didn’t grab me at all. i did get some slight prince vibes, but it was in the sense it was second rate. there was a certain male voice that was rather whiny, and not in a good way. i enjoyed the female voice (shara nelson, unless if i’m mistaken); she had quite a voice, one i must describe as alluring.

This made for some good background music, but I honestly just wasn't that into it. What I liked was the dichotomy between the ambient and surreal vocals when put against the very dark trip-hoppy music. Sometimes more ambient albums like this can kind of blur into one big mass for me, and that kind of happened here.

It’s like it was made with the expressed purpose for a DJ to remix it. It’s right on the edge of interesting for me. Also British rapping makes me feel weird. Caught between the pull of early dancehall and soulful R&B, this LP lands smack dab in the disappointingly tepid middle. There are occasional flashes of the innovative production and sound design that would later characterize 'Mezzanine,' but here the highs aren't nearly frequent enough to keep the album from feeling like a chore.

Not a big fan of the rap in this. The reggae is quite nice, but there isn't enough, it gets drowned. I also like the vocal samples from that lady, but it's still not enough

prolly not my vibe, (pop rock??) but wait the first songs seems to be a bop. not sure if i’d be repeating.

Some of the beats were pretty cool, but the singing ruined this album for me. And this is coming from someone who loves trip hop.

Åpner med et veldig saftig bass riff. Sangerinnen er god, men både hun og bakgrunnsangerne har mange av de irriterende 90-talls karakteristikkene i flere av sangene. Nasale avslutninger, redigering midt i et ord, og heftig vibrato på uflatterende plasser. Ting blir veldig repetitivt etter en stund også. Jeg blir lei en beat etter 20 sekunder, så lengden på mange av disse sangene er ikke et pluss for meg. Kul bass eller trommer av og til trekker denne opp til en 2.

Just did not stand out to me and am I the only one who thought every female vocalist on this was… not great? I’ll just listen to Portishead, thanks. I’d welcome an instrumental version of this record though, for sure.

2.5 | Nunca había escuchado el debut de Massive Attack y de hecho, aunque los conocía como un grupo muy importante de trip hop no tenía idea que ellos eran considerados el origen de todo el género. En general siempre me ha gustado el grupo y esperaba algo bastante interesante. Aunque sí es interesante musicalmente y me encuentro con justamente esa mezcla musical de electrónica y hip hop a manera casi ambiental, los sonidos de consola muy interesantes y la música de hecho se siente hasta mucho más "bailable" que lo que sacaron despues. Mi problema va un poco hacia las voces, en realidad no me gustaron la manera en que están implementadas en este disco; no es algo que lo arruine, el disco es agradable pero trístemente no lo terminaría agregando a la lista de canciones y discos del grupo que oigo con alguna periodicidad. Buen disco pero siento mejoraron mucho después.

Good beats/ambient for background work music. Mix of reggae, electronic, hip hop, blues. I only knew a few songs by M.A. (Teardrop), so this was a good exposure to more of their stuff. Highlights: -One Love -Blue Lines -Hymn of the Big Wheel

The tracks featuring Shara Nelson on vocals were pretty good. The rest...not so much. I might like this if I were into dance music. Best track: Unfinished Sympathy.

This one was a hard listen for me. It just sounds so discordant and incoherent. It’s not the worst album I’ve heard, but I couldn’t find anything very redeemable about it.

When I saw the band name of “Massive Attack” and the cover art, I was immediately expecting some heavy metal. This ain’t that. This electronic music is no way lives up to the expectation that the band set. I didn’t like this album.

Hm weird. Sounds like it’d be playing in that weird dark bathroom in Amsterdam? Very chill but then an unusual element would pop out. I wanted to like it but I lowk couldn’t -not my thing but interesting nonetheless.

man this one is very hyped up to me and i was excited to finally get to it but i /hate/ these vocals SO much. they dont fit the vibe of the songs at all. i really wish these were just instrumental. humble beginnings for sure, but trip-hop improved tenfold after this and it makes this kind of a difficult listen if you dont have any prior feelings towards it. not to mention it kind of drops trip hop midway for other genres suddenly. like track 4 and 5 are rnb and dub-infused respectively out of nowhere. "Lately" is the closest it gets to being good but overall id strongly argue most of this has just not aged very gracefully at all.

How did this get sorted into the wrong list? It's 1991, none of this is unique or a debut of a huge global band ive ever heard of. Glimmer of hope with song Blue Lines. You get a star and you get a- no that's it. One star

I like their better known albums alright, but the compositions on this one just seemed too aimless, if not random.

listening when: half on the way to pilates and half on my afternoon walk thoughts: first album from someone i hadn’t heard of and i hated this from song one. i googled the genre and it says they were pioneers for hip hop electro. not the vibes fr fr rating: 1/10

I don’t get it. This was awful. Most of the songs sounded like SNL parodies of 90s R&B. So many of the lyrics were just too cheesy to be taken seriously.

It's amazing how you can listen to something & have little to no reaction to it. I know what I like & it ain't this. Didn't care for lyrics or style of rap. The beats were meh & did little to nothing for me. I feel nothing for this. I just don't like it. No musical attraction whatsoever. 1

Massive attack of shit.

This apparently blew some damn minds in the ‘90’s judging by what I’ve read, ranking this album as top in the last century. I guess it’s a “you had to be there” kind of thing because the music didn’t do much for me. There was a nice “Fidler on the Roof” reference in “Daydreaming”. “Hymn of the Big Wheel” I liked but too little, too late. That’s about all. Not one I’ll revisit.

Boring album. It must be #1001. It was uninteresting. I would go out of my way to not listen to it again.
