Blue Lines

An album somehow both distilled essence of its time yet also timeless. With nods to 70s soul deep cuts and a melange of styles and genres, Massive Attack made this masterpiece for the ages. Absorbing, flowing, emotional - electronic music was rarely this introspective. And Unfinished Sympathy isn’t one of the greatest musical achievements of the century as the soaring orchestra builds and swells and Shara Nelson’s beautiful vocals ring clear and sweet creating a transformative, epic, maxi and mini track. Exciting and frightening.

This album is very good. I enjoyed it a lot.

I love me some trip-hop. I think Mezzanine is a better album overall, but there's something really raw and significant about this album all the same. It really feels like it was at the crest of the wave for the genre - really enjoyed it

Not a fan of most of the vocals, but the backing tracks were moody and interesting. Unfinished Sympathy was the best track.

Not sure about this. Wanted it to be better.. Its got one of the best ongs of all time on it (Unfinished Sympathy) but everything in the run up to that track has been very average. It's good, clever, it's got little nods/references to classic tracks in there. But just a bit flat overall. 3/5

Ehh, didn't enjoy this as much as other triphop i've heard. Still some good parts, but a lot of the beats felt meh and i despise the song Unfinished Sympathy due to my mom playing it way too much.

It was OK. I liked a few songs but didn't enjoy the overall experience. Nothing special.

I haven’t been this pleasantly surprised going into something I thought I’d dislike since my first viewing of “The Sound of Music” in a movie theater nearly a decade ago - this album combines hip-hop, dub, soul, reggae and electronic music into an incredibly satisfying melange.

This is good. Not as profound as their other album but very listenable. 4

A true classic. And if 3D Del Naja is Banksy, then even better.

It's eclectic for me. Weird in spots, great in others.

Musically solid. The vibe, the beat... enjoyable and a good listen. I actually think the vocal style really detracts from it, however... in too many instances (male voice) it is too plain and uninteresting. I'd rather just have the groove.

This is just not my thing. The instrumentals are fine but the tracks just draaaaaag. It genuinely felt like "One Love" was ten minutes long. Everything gets very repetitive to the point it's annoying.

Has some tunes, liked it, didn’t love it.

Maybe revolutionary in its day, but it does not hold up for me. It could be a victim of its own success, creating an oft copied formula, once a bright shining star, but now it just blends in with the streetlamps.

Solid, but sometimes a bit repetitive. Great for dancing by yourself in your room, I enjoyed it quite a bit. Favourites included Daydreaming and Blue Lines (the title track).

From the opening burbling bass of Safe From Harm, I was hooked. What a song. What an album. Genre defining. I love Mezzanine which is a more consistent album but the high points of Blue Lines are enough to carry the album to a 5 🌟rating

First impression is soothing lo-fi-ish R&B, very listenable, but I suspect I didn’t give it the attention it deserves yesterday, especially lyrically. Worthy of another listen when I’m not so distracted. Musically though, very nice.

Particularly enjoyed Unfinished Sympathy, which had to have influenced Moby’s “Porcelain.”

Chill. Funky. Some of the sings are kinda similar to Gorillaz. Lotta different voices. Title track is cool.

I must have heard these tunes in a hair salon once, or a fashion show on television...they have that clean, upbeat feel. I can listen to this again, but I'm not sure if it moves me.

Feels like an old school movie score (atleast the opener did) Not a vibe I'm feeling but can understand the appeal, good work music if nothing else.

Is it club music? Is it hip hop? Neither, both, but less than the sum of its parts. Underwhelming rhymes, sounds dated and very 90s but in a not great way. That said, there's a few decent tracks on here: Blue Lines, Unfinished Sympathy and Hymn Of The Big Wheel

Blue Lines is the first song to win me over, the transition into the next song from Blue lines is also very clean and admirable. Expected nothing until Five Man Army until I realised this is the same Massive Attack that's made Teardrop, either way. Five Man Army's drum placement at the end is phenomenal. Every song after that is very vibe-able to, and the album picks up pace but it's very easy to forget the difference in the songs here. Still, daydreaming is perhaps my favourite of the last 4. 3+/5

Strange but very good. Interesting to say the least.

Not a big fan of the rap in this. The reggae is quite nice, but there isn't enough, it gets drowned. I also like the vocal samples from that lady, but it's still not enough

I started out listening to this thinking I liked the darker tone of Mezzanine better, and after finishing it I still think that stands. But other aspects of this album - Tricky’s rapping in particular - are better. Solid 4 stars.

Für Elektro, was gar nicht meins ist, echt ein sehr cooles Album. Super Songwriting, sodass die Songs sicher auch „unelektrisch“ funktionieren.

I think I'm definitely missing something here and feel bad for giving it a 2 for a half assed listen on my part, but that's just the way it is.

Um álbum que começa muito bem com a sua melhor música, a Safe From Harm. O restante álbum já não brilha tanto mas é um álbum bastante competente de música mais eletronica que se mistura com alguns géneros. É um álbum que esta aqui mais pela sonoridade do que qualquer outra coisa nesse critério ele destaca-se. Não guardo nenhuma música, esta muito fora do espetro de coisas que gosto, mas deixo aqui uma nota mais positiva por ter me surpreendido. Nota: 6/10 23/05/2024

I really, really like good R&B based music. This album walked the line b/t experimental and standard well. No songs stood out as exceptional, which is a shame. Still really liked the album as a whole

Massive Attack haben mich geflashed, als ich sie das erste Mal entdeckt hab und tun es immer wieder. Düster, mystisch, fett, melodisch und überraschend. Das ist für sein Genre zeitlos.

Gefällt mir sehr, auch wenn Unfinished Sympathy durch die 90er Talkshow Arabella versaut wurde - jedes Mal muss ich bei diesem Lied an diese komische Sendung denken.

Sin ser el que más me gusta sí es el que más me sorprende, lo tiene todo para ser una obra maestra: mezcla de géneros para hacer uno nuevo, flow y rollo a rabiar, magnetismo a tope. Musicalmente es una locura y, en su momento, rompedor y totalmente novedoso.

Rästissä olevien levyjen takia meinasin jättää kertakuunteluun, mutta näin perjantain kunniaksi pyörittelin uudestaankin. En mikään electro/hiphopin suurkuluttaja ole, mutta joskus olen Massive Attackia eksynyt kuuntelemaan. Ihan raikasta vaihtelua hypätä afrikkalaisesta gospeltyylisestä acapella kuoromusiikista triphoppiin. Hyvin ajankohtasidonnaisia nämä arvostelut yleisestikin ovat. Blue Lines kolahti paremmin kuin hyvin aurinkoisen perjantaiaamun fiiliksiin. Jatkoon.

Some of the beats were pretty cool, but the singing ruined this album for me. And this is coming from someone who loves trip hop.

Big Attack would suffice. No need to be arrogant. An example of a massive attack is Andy Carroll and SHACK.

Listening on Napster- 2012 Master/Mix 1. Safe From Harm- chill, relaxing, great beat and vibe 7/10 2. One Love- reel catchy beat, slow chill relaxing. 8/10 smooth clean. Really love all the random sounds and instruments (turn tables /piano) 3. Blue Lines- lyrics are really smooth and cool and flows. Hip hop beat and flow with jazzy background 7/10 4. Be Thankful For What You’ve Got- Marvin Gaye sounding vocals and flow as well as the smooth vibe Marvin esque music with a synthesizer 80s hip hop background. 8.5/10

Tämä olikin ihan positiivinen yllätys. Alkuun oli joitain ennakkoluuloja Massive Attackia kohtaan, tämäkin kuuluu niihin bändeihin miltä on joskus aikanaan biisin tai pari kuullut ja sitten jos ne eivät osuneet, niin kuuntelu jäi sitten siihen. Tämä levy jäi mieleen rytmikkäänä ja (suhteellisen) menevänä. Ei ollut silleen liian eteeristä huminaa ja jumittelua, vaan energistä tavaraa. Brittiräppäystäkin on kiva kuunnella ainakin pieninä annoksina silloin tällöin.

I have a hard time rating this. I kind of feel like the songs are tense, but not really exciting. Like it’s good, but also fades into the background easily and it doesn’t really pump me up

Not one I would’ve listened to otherwise but I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Good background beats for a lot of the tracks but also some bangers.

Im Rückblick noch mehr Urknall als Grunge in dem Jahr. Weite, und ich meine weite Teile der 90er unvorstellbar ohne das Teil, Kruder und Dorfmeister waren ja bei denen im Kindergarten. Bass? Yeah! Drums? MEEEGAA. Aber auch die Raps möchte Vati lobend erwähnen: slick, smooth and juicy. "Bums", wie es so schön zärtlich in "daydreaming" haucht.

Absoluter Meilenstein. Der persönliche Übergang für meinen Musik Kosmos. Neue Galaxien jenseits der Gitarrennebel hat mir dieser gritty Millennium Falke aus Bristol eröffnet. Dabei half der am Crossover Geschütz ballernde Tricky und der tränenverschmierte Depri Pop von Portishead als Eskorte bei der Orientierung aber Massive Attack blieb lange der Leitstern, ohne den das Unkle’sche Schwarze Loch wohl unerreichbar geblieben wäre. Diese Zeit nahm ich zudem als MTV golden era wahr, weswegen auch ihre Videos ganz maßgeblich bei popkultureller Kartographie gewesen sind. 4.2

Seit gestern wieder nur zweiter im ewigen Battle: wer gefällt Guido besser, Blue Lines oder Protection? Aber wie das so ist in ewigen Battles: der Kampf ist noch lange nicht entschieden. Das hier featured Basslines für die Ewigkeit, den perfekten Popsong, und mit Hymn of the Big Wheel einen Grower, der auch nach Jahrzehnten bei mir immer noch Potential hat. Momentan: 4,7 Sterne

I am no fan of trip-hop, and I wouldn't shed too many tears if the entire city of Bristol was to fall into the sea. This sounds...atrocious. Boring, dated - and how many times are they going to say the phrase 'massive attack'? I'm trying to imagine a scenario where I'd put this on out of choice, and am failing. Perhaps interrogating someone at Abu Ghraib?

I really don't like electronic music, but to my surprise, this is a nice album. According to Wikipedia, it starts the style of trip-hop with the mix of electronic and hip-hop and I think that this mix made my opinion change a little. It's not the type of music that I choose to listen to during my day, but at some electronic party, these songs would be a very good choice.

Started off so strong and I was ready for a great album...fizzled out into mediocrity disappointingly fast.

I think there are elements and styles within this album that make it worth listening too but overall I found it a bit boring. Perhaps I just am not into this band and their style, or that I don't have much experience listening to their niche, but I wasn't blown away by this.

Et bra og interessant album. Just short of 4 stars. Albumet har flere veldig gode tracks, spesielt "five man army". Trommeloopsa er funky, med en karibisk twist. Dette er album jeg forstår blir satt høyt oppe i et musikkhistorisk perspektiv. Ikke bare er det tidlig underground-ish hiphop, men britisk attpåtil. Du kan høre inspirasjonen, men også hva dette albumet ville selv inspirere further down the road. Hva som holder albumet vekk fra en 4-stjerners, til tross for sin nyskapning innen hiphop, kreative produksjon og mørke, stemningsfulle tekster og tematikk er kontinuiteten. Ikke alle sangene er like gode, det varierer, og til tider kan man høre hvor gammelt dette albumet var. Personlig var jeg ikke en superfan, men setter veldig pris på hva albumet representerer. blir en svak/grei 7 av 10, 3 stjerner

The original trip hop album. Still sounds just as good now as it did 30 years ago.

Fun, darkish experimental album. I'm sure it was even more out there when it first came out. Good vocals and the instrumental breaks felt a bit long at times but were still enjoyable.

Åpner med et veldig saftig bass riff. Sangerinnen er god, men både hun og bakgrunnsangerne har mange av de irriterende 90-talls karakteristikkene i flere av sangene. Nasale avslutninger, redigering midt i et ord, og heftig vibrato på uflatterende plasser. Ting blir veldig repetitivt etter en stund også. Jeg blir lei en beat etter 20 sekunder, så lengden på mange av disse sangene er ikke et pluss for meg. Kul bass eller trommer av og til trekker denne opp til en 2.

Just did not stand out to me and am I the only one who thought every female vocalist on this was… not great? I’ll just listen to Portishead, thanks. I’d welcome an instrumental version of this record though, for sure.

2.5 | Nunca había escuchado el debut de Massive Attack y de hecho, aunque los conocía como un grupo muy importante de trip hop no tenía idea que ellos eran considerados el origen de todo el género. En general siempre me ha gustado el grupo y esperaba algo bastante interesante. Aunque sí es interesante musicalmente y me encuentro con justamente esa mezcla musical de electrónica y hip hop a manera casi ambiental, los sonidos de consola muy interesantes y la música de hecho se siente hasta mucho más "bailable" que lo que sacaron despues. Mi problema va un poco hacia las voces, en realidad no me gustaron la manera en que están implementadas en este disco; no es algo que lo arruine, el disco es agradable pero trístemente no lo terminaría agregando a la lista de canciones y discos del grupo que oigo con alguna periodicidad. Buen disco pero siento mejoraron mucho después.

No me gustó. 2. No me gustó pero reconozco las importancia del disco o las chingonería musical del artista. 3. Me gustó, pero no me parece un pinche discazo. 4. Un pinche discazo, pero quizá tenga un par de rolas que nomás no. 5. Un puto discazo.

Vocals are dynamic but very much reminiscent of the time period. Instrumentation holds up incredibly well and is solely unique to Massive Attack, that is a sexy, futuristic fusion of multiple genres such as a hip-hop, soft rock, jazz, etc. in a near psychedelic manner.

El estilo musical de este disco me recordó a algún disco de Moby. Música electrónica mezclada con Rap / Hip Hop. Me quedé con la canción de "Unfinished Sympathy", pero el resto del álbum no me agradó tanto. Creo que no es mi género.

Que discazo aunque renieguen de ser los padres del género, el trip Hop me gusta mucho y Bristol ha dado buenas bandas. Esa mezcla de Hip Hop, rock, rap, electro es sublime

El Triphop en definitiva no es mi género favorito y me cuesta mucho trabajo mantener la atención durante todo el disco. Sin embargo, creo que merece puntos extras por muchas razones: gran uso de voces, mezcla de ritmos y estilo, excelente sonido de los bajos, y obviamente por haber sido el álbum pionero de este género. Me lo quedo para tener de fondo en momentos de stress.

Day 44 of AlbuMs You Must Hear. Before the genre trip-hop existed in 1991, English electronic music Massive Attack released their debut album, Blue Lines. This is a really chill record with lots of sampling, breakbeats and scratching. There is some singing and some rapping on Blue Lines but the true star of this show is the production. Check out the cool William DeVaughn sample of A Cadillac Don’t Come Easy on Be Thankful For What You Got. I really enjoyed Blue Lines by Massive Attack. SCORE: 7/10 The Horace Andy tracks are mediocre, the Shara Nelson tracks are spectacular, and the rapped tracks are pretty solid.

Massive Attack is one of my favorite bands of all-time. The advent of trip-hop was amazing and this album illustrated the things to come from this english duo.

not too bad. i've never heard the full album before but I am pretty sure I've come across a couple of songs here and there. MA was a big late-night rage favourite in the 90s. It's kinda catchy but just not my thing, no staying power. like a slightly more interesting, less annoying version of what moby was doing a few years later. 3/5.
