Reviews (page 4 of 14)

Absolute metal masterpiece, and perhaps Metallica's best album.

Love this album.

-"Blackened" is totally jamming -Nice, solid Metallica album

Almost a perfect album. Love it!

5/5 instantly

overall, great metal album, more refined than some of their earlier work, perhaps less edgy, but still great.

Sorry Jason Newstead but this album is front to back a BANGER

Joya.

Just a few days ago we had the previous Metallica album Master Of Puppets. I gave that one a 4 and liked this one a bit better. It's more straightforward and more focused & relentless. Also, Master Of Puppets came across as somewhat pretentious at times, while And Justice For All doesn't. There were a few really good tracks but One and the instrumental track To Live Ist To Die in particular were excellent. 4.5 rounded up because of how fantastic To Live Is To Die was.

One of my favorite bands. 'One' is still magnificent. Wasn't sure to give 4 or 5 as it's somewhat in between

Quintessential heavy metal album.

Incluye la mejor canción de Metallica

A good record, easily the fourth record by this band.

It's Metallica, 5/5.

I don't know how many times I've listen to this album, but it's enough.

Relaxed in a tub to

Very trippy sounding and definitely interesting. This seems like it could use another listen to really hear the words.

One of the best metal records ever.

#1 metal record of all time.

Will never complain about a Metallica album, especially not this one.

Another excellent album from this great band

Fantastic album, peak Metallica, my favorite, and possibly their best

Greatest metal album of all time.

Glorious album

4.5 stars

A sound that I found extremely easy to appreciate, a sound that I’ve aged into in the past five years as the world grows more unpredictable and I sometimes seek catharsis in music rather than escape. I’ve learned that I prefer post-hardcore melodic singing more than what Hetfield is doing, but it’s really the band that carries this for me. As a teenager whose parents completely eschewed metal, it all sounded like loud nothing to me on 2000s classic rock radio, but as I listen 20 years later I hear how precise and deeply musical Metallica is. I listened to this on the couch at 10pm during a summer heatwave and that felt like the perfect setting. The songs that portray tortured individuals are a little too disturbing for me, but most of these lyrics about the manipulation of political power and wealth still absolutely rip almost 40 years after they were put to paper.

I first heard about this album when Todd In The Shadows was discussing St. Anger and how people would forgive bad production if the music bangs hard enough. He mentioned that while both albums famously sound terrible, ...And Justice For All is still beloved because the music itself is up to snuff. Having now actually listened to this album, he is absolutely right. The production here is not good, but god this is still a really fun listen. It is just a really solid metal album with a surprising amount of prog elements, the mix is both very muddy and dry simultaneously though which almost feels like an achievement.

A good album but not my favorite by them

Pure nonstop energy!

Turning the volume up REALLY HIGH changes this from a 2 to a 4

Let's give this... a small four

Their most technically, and structurally exciting album. Not quite MoP in terms of a full package, but the more progressive tendencies of this album are unmistakable.

I noticed with this album that a lot of Metallica sounds sonically very much the same. For all my digs at an artist for their lack of variation, I will first hand admit here that if that sound is appealing to you then you could listen forever. I'm still undecided if my praise extends to forever, but Metallica certainly has a sound that I have yet to tire of. Hetfield's voice is great and the instrumentation too is as accurate and beautiful as it is fast. My only gripe with this album is that there are a couple of songs I feel didn't do anything particularly memorable. Don't get me wrong, they are perfectly listenable and I enjoyed them. However, with so much Metallica to listen to now, it's hard not to cut these tracks some slack when there is so much good stuff out there now; "...and Justice for All", "Eye of the Beholder", "The Shortest Straw". Some of my favourite tracks for sure though: "Blackening", "One", "Harvester of Sorrow", "Frayed Ends of Sanity"... Pretty much every song apart from the 3 listed from before this. Overall, another super enjoyable album from Metallica, but not as good as the black album for me. That thing was just a monster.

My second favourite Metallica Album

Rock hard

Still not as good as Ride the Lightning, but pretty good.

i listen to one every time i’m powerwalking through the train station trying not to be late for class, glad to know the rest of the album fits the same purpose too

4/5 good album

Not my favourite Metallica album that said, I still enjoyed it.

great album

Badass shi, heard that

Mein Lieblingsmetallica-Album

Classic Metallica - solid all the way

…And Justice for All is the band at their most extreme in another way: longer songs, more intricate arrangements, sharper angles, less swing, less warmth, more control.

This really is a great album!

Metallica is kinda funky. They've got a lot of good things going for them — they know how to use rhythm to punctuate and bolster their harmonies, they know how and when to throw in a heart-stopping guitar solo, they understand the impact of chromatic runs, they love and relish in soft-acoustic into thrashy metal turns, and so on. The problem I find with Metallica is that, if they're not one-trick ponies, they're maybe a four-trick pony at best. A lot of the same techniques are used throughout, and they start to lose their oomph pretty damn fast. Staccato riffs, three-energy-drink heart rate tempos, and sick riffs are all awesome but using them to this length and degree seriously drains them of their power. It's hard to not feel like you've just got done listening to the same song two or three times when giving the album a fill listen through. At the end of the day though, the band just rocks. There are harder metal bands, more inventive and technically impressive metal bands, more melodically sound metal bands, but Metallica sorta does for metal what blink-182 does for pop punk. They're accessible, fun, and decent enough at what they do. A pretty damn good metal album.

laughed and said fuck you to 1001ag for throwing out metallica twice in a row, but this album was sick!

A classic. Favorites: Blackened, …And Justice for All, Eye of the Beholder, One, The Frayed Ends of Sanity, To Live Is To Die, Dyers Eve

I struggle with this album as it represents the first storm clouds that destroyed what was a great band. Their next was the end. Gone is the spitting mad anger, the speed, the agro of thrash. In comes the radio ready unit shifter.

Sometimes I get a bit tired of the vocals, but the guitar i can never get tired of

This surprised me, I didn’t think Metallica was for me but I enjoyed this. Lyrically not doing much for me, but the drums and guitars are undeniably fantastic

I'm a big Metallica fan, but, whereas many a fan may list Justice as their favorite, I rank it near the bottom. This album has some great songs, mind you - Harvester of Sorrow is one of my favs - but the album just sounds bad. There's no bass in the mix, and in several songs you can hear their fingers sliding on the strings and it's like nails on a chalkboard for me - sends shivers down my spine whether I consciously hear it or not. It's just not a pleasant listening experience for me.

Here’s an in-depth review of Metallica’s *…And Justice for All* (1988), examining its lyrics, music, production, themes, influence, and overall pros and cons. --- ## Overview Released on August 25, 1988, *…And Justice for All* was Metallica’s first studio album following the death of bassist Cliff Burton in 1986. It features new bassist Jason Newsted, though his presence is notoriously buried in the mix. The album marks a peak in the band’s technical ambition, expanding their thrash metal foundation with progressive song structures, political lyricism, and a colder, more complex sonic identity. --- ## Lyrics The lyrics on *…And Justice for All* shift notably from the horror-fantasy and personal angst of earlier albums toward sociopolitical critique. - **Themes:** War, corruption, injustice, censorship, greed, betrayal, and the failure of legal, military, and media systems. The title track condemns a hollow legal system; “One” is an anti-war masterpiece about a soldier trapped in his own body after being maimed by a landmine; “The Shortest Straw” addresses McCarthy-era blacklisting; “Harvester of Sorrow” deals with domestic violence and psychosis; “Eye of the Beholder” attacks censorship and thought control. - **Style:** James Hetfield’s lyrics are dense, wordy, and delivered with furious precision. There’s less use of the “yeah” or “oh” ad-libs than on later albums. The tone is grim, disillusioned, and moralizing without being preachy. “One” stands as the emotional centerpiece, its lyrical descent from memory to nightmare matched by a shift from clean guitars to thrash. **Pro:** Lyrically ambitious, mature, and thematically cohesive. **Con:** Occasionally verbose (“Dyers Eve” packs so many words into its verses that the rhythm feels rushed), and the anger can tip into monotonous bleakness. --- ## Music The songwriting is extraordinarily complex for a mainstream metal album. - **Structure:** Songs regularly exceed 7–9 minutes, with multiple tempo changes, odd time signatures, and extended instrumental passages. “…And Justice for All” (9:45) cycles through four distinct sections; “To Live Is to Die” (9:48) is a largely instrumental elegy for Cliff Burton. - **Guitars:** Hetfield and Kirk Hammett employ intricate, palm-muted gallops, harmonized leads, and arpeggiated clean sections. The riffs are angular and dissonant, often eschewing standard blues-metal patterns for chromatic runs and syncopated accents. - **Bass:** Jason Newsted followed Hetfield’s rhythms exactly in rehearsal, but his bass is nearly inaudible on the final mix—a famous and bitterly debated production choice. - **Drums:** Lars Ulrich’s drumming is aggressive and technically demanding, with extensive use of double bass, tom fills, and abrupt stops. However, the drum sound is trigger-heavy and clicky. - **Vocals:** Hetfield’s snarl is more controlled and melodic in places (“One” verses, “Frayed Ends of Sanity”) but still harsh. He rarely sings cleanly; instead, he uses a half-shout that became a template for later groove metal. **Pro:** Musically groundbreaking—bridging thrash and progressive metal before bands like Dream Theater or Opeth codified the style. **Con:** Lack of bass guitar weakens the low-end power, making the album feel tinny. The complexity sometimes sacrifices memorability for technical display. --- ## Production (The Most Controversial Element) Produced by Metallica with Flemming Rasmussen (engineer), the sound is **dry, bass-deficient, and top-heavy**. - **Guitar tone:** Sharp, scooped mids, highly compressed. Works for clarity in complex riffs but lacks warmth. - **Drums:** The snare is unusually metallic and thin; kick drums are trigger-happy and lack resonance. - **Bass:** Mixed to near-silence. Jason Newsted has said he played the same rhythms as Hetfield, but the band (reportedly Hetfield and Ulrich) intentionally turned him down in the final mix—allegedly as hazing and to achieve a more “punchy” guitar sound. - **Comparison to earlier albums:** *Master of Puppets* (1986) had far more warmth and bass presence. *Justice* sounds sterile next to it. **Pro:** The dry, trebly mix accentuates the album’s cold, mechanical themes—some argue it suits the subject matter. **Con:** Objectively deficient for a metal album. Live versions of these songs (e.g., *Seattle 1989*) sound vastly more powerful. Many fans have created “bass restored” bootlegs. --- ## Themes Central theme: **Systemic injustice**. Each track attacks a different pillar of authority: - Courts (“…And Justice for All”) - War machine (“One”) - Media censorship (“Eye of the Beholder”) - Paranoia and betrayal (“Frayed Ends of Sanity”) - Organized religion (“Leper Messiah” – though that track is technically from *Master of Puppets*, its spiritual successor here is “Harvester of Sorrow”) - Greed (“The Shortest Straw”) The album’s emotional core is grief. “To Live Is to Die” features a spoken passage written by Cliff Burton, and the raw anguish of loss permeates the record, often masked by intellectual rage. It’s a world-weary, cynical album with no redemption arc—only surviving, not thriving. --- ## Influence *…And Justice for All* was massively influential in several ways: 1. **Progressive thrash:** Inspired bands like Meshuggah, Opeth, Nevermore, and later Gojira to fuse technicality with aggression. 2. **Modern metal production (for worse):** The “scooped mids” guitar sound and trigger-like kick drums were emulated by countless 1990s metal bands, often poorly. 3. **Political metal:** Alongside *Peace Sells… But Who’s Buying?* (Megadeth), it proved thrash could be politically intelligent. 4. **Drumming style:** Lars Ulrich’s staccato, stop-start patterns influenced alternative metal (Korn, System of a Down). 5. **Commercial bridge:** It reached No. 6 on Billboard, paving the way for the even more successful *Metallica (The Black Album)* in 1991. Without *Justice*, the shift from 1980s thrash to 1990s groove/prog metal would have been slower and less defined. --- ## Pros and Cons Summary | **Pros** | **Cons** | |----------|----------| | Ambitious, progressive songwriting | Severely lacking bass guitar in mix | | Intelligent political and anti-war lyrics | Thin, dry, harsh production | | “One” is a timeless masterpiece | Drums sound artificial and clicky | | Emotional weight of Cliff Burton’s death handled tastefully | Some songs overstay their welcome (title track drags) | | Influenced entire subgenres of metal | Hetfield’s lyrics can be overly dense | | Hetfield’s vocal performance is fierce and controlled | Lacks the warmth and dynamics of *Master of Puppets* | | Great guitar harmonies and complex riffs | Hazing of Jason Newsted reflected in mix is a black mark | --- ## Final Verdict **Rating: 9/10** (musically, lyrically, influentially) **Production: 4/10** (objectively flawed, though some defend its aesthetic) *…And Justice for All* is a flawed masterpiece. It’s the sound of a brilliant band wounded, furious, and technically overcompensating. The production is a notorious liability, but the songwriting and thematic ambition remain towering achievements in metal history. For those who can look past the absent bass, it’s essential listening—a dark, labyrinthine monument to grief and outrage.

Some great guitar work!

Well crickey these young men are quite peeved, aren’t they?

Goes hard and will be added to the workout playlist but has the dumb guy stench all over it. I think it’s great.

One is the major standout on this album. The rest was good but it was just kinda chugging along in the background for me. I think another Metallica album might hit a little harder for me. One carries the rest to a 4 though.

nailing this as my second album when i've just recently in the past couple days been listening to more metallica ?!?!

Really, really strong beginning to the album. The rest is still good, but it doesn't hit as much for me as the first couple of tracks do.

Good Metallica album

This album does a lot of things wrong, the most (in)famous being the near-erasure of Jason Newsted's bass, for reasons the guilty parties have been trying to explain for decades but never seem to be able to account for in any sort of satisfactory way. Beyond that, James Hetfield is a graduate of the Neil Peart School of Way Too On-the-Nose Socially Conscious Lyric Writing; the clunkers fly freely here. And yet. And yet. The ultra-dry, bass-less mix, combined with Lars Ulrich's insistent drumming, has a hypnotic effect; you are constantly hearing the *absence* of something, which is how this ends up signifying musically in a way that a "better" sounding album wouldn't. Similarly, the failure of the lyrics to rise above smoke-break bitching makes them *accessible*. There's functionally no metaphor, just blunt declarations of the way the world is. *No justice, no peace*. So where does that leave us? For me, this is thrash's *Raw Power*, a deeply flawed album that draws its meaning from the way it wears its flaws on its sleeve. Metallica certainly haven't done anything this artistically unified since (which is different from saying they haven't done anything of value since). And it helps that this is a pantheon-level Weight Room Album, whatever else it is. Calling it "perfect" would be wrong but it's good at being the rough beast it is.

A veces brillantes...y otra insoportables. Metallica siempre.

Favorite tracks: - Blackened - Eye of the Beholder - One

This is classic Metallica. This is the album that has One, which may be Metallica's best song. I feel like this one suffers a little bit being in the shadow of Master of Puppets. It would also sound better if they hadn't mixed the bass out.

One of the best Metallica albums, wish it had more bass. More political than I remember, but I haven't paid attention to most of this album in a long time. Love it.

1. "One" 2. "The Shortest Straw" 3. "Blackened"

Metallica are a very varied band. Their earlier albums are fine, if inferior to what the rest of the 'big 4' were releasing at the time. Their later stuff is poppy and ranges from middling to poor. And Justice For All is infuriating, because it's by far the best of their earlier works in my eyes, with the hardest, no-nonsense sound they would ever carry; and yet after this, they would reduce themselves to pop-metal.

Actually pretty fun. Strong 3 light 4

I like how quirky some of the riffs are but a lot of the songs felt too long with the repeating verses

Not for me but very Metallica. Some fun riffs

The third in a classic run of thrash albums. Not ride the lighting good but still great arrangements and anthems.

Early Metallica, it's good

classic metal rock n roll

Started strong. Mid was okay.

Wonderful without an orchestra behind it

Hell yea Heard it before, will listen again. Not their best but still some absolute bangers on here 4

Classic - love it, even drums are weak ahaha

This was a lot more "prog" than normal for Metallica and sometimes things went on for a little long, but this album is great. Also "One" and "Dyers Eve" are EPIC. Liked Songs: "Blackened" , "...And Justice For All" , "Eye of the Beholder" , "One" , "The Shortest Straw" , "The Frayed Ends of Sanity" , "To Live Is to Die" , "Dyers Eve"

Of Metallica’s incredible 5 album run, this is the one I put just a slight notch below the other 4. It’s great but the prog elements cause it to lack the focus of the others. Also, the bass. I know it’s a meme, but it needs to be mentioned. Still I give it a strong 4

Hell yeah

Not my favorite genre of music but these guys are the best at it

Casually listened to aome Metallica for some time, but it’s going to be interesting to listen to a full album! Blackened was a great intro. Really got into the vibe of the album. It was nice and heavy without being overbearing. As an add on, that solo was fantastic. The title track again had some awesome music to it! I love been liking the driving rhythm guitar and bass. I liked that eye of the beholder had some more vocals to it! One is obviously great, it’s the only track I knew off the album before coming in, but a worthy one. The shortest straw was super cool, and the riff of harvester of sorrow was awesome! The Frayed Ends of Sanity was a cool name for a track, it was quite similar to the previous tracks though. To Live is to Die was very welcome! I liked how it was slightly softer at the start. Again, great solo. I really appreciated the more melodic guitar 3/4 of the way through. I thought Dyers Eve was a good closer! Overall, this album was good, but a lot of it was very similar to each other. 3.5/5 ⭐️ 113/1089

Solid. A little similar throughout the songs

Day 251 Done classic thrash metal riffs here Highlights One Harvester of Sorrow The Frayed Ends of Sanity

Good lowkey metal works for even these longer songs.

This one has the thrashy elements that OG fans like along with the melodic nature that brought them into the mainstream. Only complaint is that it’s way too long.

The album that made me a teenage metalhead. Firstly, the cons. The mix is terrible - even the remastered version isn't great, and the 'Justice for Jason' mix online is much better. Lars's drumming is sloppy as hell, especially compared to modern standards. A few songs are a little longwinded in places. But goddammit the RIFFS. Bordering on prog but without ever getting pretentious. Several parts are among the best metal has to offer - Blackened's sneaky change of meter, AJFA's intro, One in its entirety, Dyer's Eve. Right on the 4/5 border for me. I'm inclined to think some of that is bias, so i'll stick with 4.

This is Metallica at their most rigid and controlled, leaning heavily into long, intricate structures that feel almost architectural in design. The riffs are sharp and deliberate, and the songs unfold with a kind of calculated intensity rather than raw force. The production choices remain a sticking point and undeniably limit the impact, but there is still something compelling about how tightly constructed everything is. It demands attention and rewards it, even if it never fully lets loose.

To live is to die is a great song

sick fucking instrumentals

to live is to die é muito boa

Great album. "One' remains an all-time great song for me and the other songs were great as well. I think I remember preferring the first half of the album over the second half.

I can kinda see why a lot of people really like this album

8/10 (4/5 stars) a. Blackened - 7.8/10; I love the guitar solo thats towards the end. I like the guitar a lot in this song. Some of the vocal parts got repetitive but overall good song. b. ...And Justice for All - 8.5/10; I like the instruments a lot in the beginning. c. Eye of the Beholder - 8/10; d. One - 9/10; e. The Shortest Straw - 8.7/10; f. Harvester of Sorrow - 7/10; g. The Frayed Ends of Sanity - 8.3/10; h. To Live Is to Die - 9.7/10; i. Dyers Eve - 8.2/10;

Liking the metal more than when I started this list

Metallica igjen. Top 3: One, To Live is to Die, Dyers Eye

Mmmm yeah okay that checks out!

Mehr Abwechslung als erwartet

Metallica er kult

Didn't listen to Metallica for quite a while, but this is still a banger. 4 stars!

pretty nice for a metallica album. Especially the last two tracks

Some good songs on here but getting really tired of the rock/ Metallica. Could have died just listening to one and done I reckon. Specific rating - 4.0 Fav song - one Least fav - to live is to die

There's an inverse correlation between Metallica's quality of songwriting and the quality of production. As production increases, songwriting decreases. That's Metallica. Anyway, this is the best album featuring Jason Newsted, stepping into the monster shoes of Cliff Burton. "One" is an all-timer metal song, even if the rest of the songs are just decent. That gets it a 4 in my book.

Mostly really good

Z-Rock (106.7) in Des Plaines IL played premiered this whole record the night before it came out. I could only get reception in my car, so I sat out there the whole time listening. Fun memories, of fun times. Still a fun record.

This is the album that let the cat out of the bag. Metallica was in a league of their own. While you could hear the influences from other metal bands, Metallica took metal to new heights. This is a searing album from start to finish, but unfortunately it was the lead up to a different Metallica starting with the Black album. They grew up, but we didn't want them to.

Metal will never be my preferred genre, but this is just superior music. So tight and disciplined—and has a pop sensibility buried in there somewhere too. I know it is also political, though I wasn’t all that tuned into the lyrics.

This album rips. Powerful guitars, powerful lyrics, and themes of false justice, righteousness, power, hopelessness, fear, and anger. The only thing keeping it from a 5 is Lars and James's insistence on all but eliminating Jason Newstead's bass from the mix. A strong 4/5

Classic metal. I especially liked the songs One and To Live Is To Die. I like the guitar solo in The Shortest Straw. The change in tone and rhythm.

muy buen álbum, mucha distorsión y potencia. me gustó mucho.

One alone deserved a high rating, such a GOATed song. The rest of the album is solid imho, just good ol' thrash metal.

"One" is one of my favor songs and guitar solos, I absolutely adore everything about it, so if it were that song alone on this album, it would still be a masterpiece 🎸

Great Metallica album!

Obligatory note about the mixing, they did Jason dirty here. Wild how they went from this to the best mixed album of their catalogue on their next project. Not their best, but solid thrash here before they went and changed their sound over the next few records.

I absolutely loved this. This album felt like cold calculated anger, and the songs almost to me felt like they were structured like rants, with pace changes and shifts. Although the songs are long, they never dragged for me and I was constantly engaged. I just loved this I don’t know I don’t have much to say, just good stuff.

One of only a few albums that can justify 7+ minute songs.

I am shocked by how much I enjoyed this album. I started to get lost in the thrashing and the monotony of the vocals around The Frayed Ends, but To Live Is To Die really pulled me in - what an enjoyable interlude for the album. 4/5

Listens: 3 Standout Tracks: ...And Justice For All, One A scathing critique of government corruption and war. I didn't really listen to Metallica growing up (or honestly, any music from the Metal genre). Boy have I been missing out. It turns out I really like the genre. It resonates with me on a lyrical level and I find myself really enjoying the instrumentation too - some albums more than others - but enjoyment nonetheless. This album doesn't has as much staying power as Master of Puppets, but it is a very solid entry still. With the "Iran War" (is it a war or not?) really starting to ramp up, I can't help but think about the reignited relevance of this music. This music was and continues to be a powerful tool in criticizing institutions like Government, the Military Industrial Complex, Religion and even economic systems. It holds an important place in society serving as both an outlet for criticism and a means to communicate a message to people who might not otherwise necessarily have an awareness of such things happening in the world.

A solid album. I've been much of a Metallica fan, though I don't dislike them. But yeah, every song is good, and the album as a whole is good. It's got its imperfections, such as the sound, but it's easily overlooked. A solid 4/5.

"Surgical aggression" describes this extremely enjoyable listen

There really is no audible bass part on this album, but it kinda doesn't matter, because the bass of the rhythm guitar part is so pronounced. The interplay between the guitars and drums is a thing of beauty, with rhythms transforming completely many times in every song. Trailblazing while paying tribute to the bands who preceded them, the Lizzy-esque harmony parts are a treat. Liked this more that I expected to.

Poor newstead. He got to play with his favorite band and was cast aside. I really like the with bass version. It rocks

Maybe no bass guitar but sure can hear Lars. Probably the album that put Metallica on the path of overwhelming success and inclusion of melodic and instrumental features with their hard speed. Great lyrics.

I’m not really a metal fan, but it’s hard to deny the impact of …𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘑𝘶𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘦 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘈𝘭𝘭. The album is ambitious and uncompromising, filled with long, intricate songs built around razor-sharp riffs and relentless rhythms. At times the music almost feels progressive in its complexity, pushing thrash metal beyond straightforward aggression. Even if this isn’t a style I normally gravitate toward, the precision and intensity of the band are impressive. It’s a demanding listen, but one that makes it clear why many consider this album one of the high points of the genre.

Rips. Booster Justice - very important. 4/5

Favorite: Edge of the Beholder and Blackened

Pretty great album, I give it a solid 9/10 One is the best song First listen tracklist ranking: 1. One 2. Blackened 3. Dyer’s Eve 4. … And Justice for All 5. Harvester for Sorrow 6. The Frayed Ends of Sanity 7. To Live is to Die 8. Eye of the Beholder 9. The Shortest Straw

When to listen: want renaissance metal vibes. Cool instrumentation, absolutely loved the song "One"

Not my favorite Metallica album, nor do I think it's their best, but this album is more than just the album with their best song

You can't go wrong with Metallica. The length of the album was great and I never got bored of it. I really liked the album cover image, it aged like fine wine these days.

Got a pair of Heavys and I can hear the bass.

real dad music and a banger album cover

Master of Puppets got a 4 from me, leaning towards 5. This also gets a 4, but leans towards 3. It doesn't have the same warmth and depth that MoP haa in my opinion. These songs felt longer, more abrasive and less accessible. However, the skill and talent as ever is undeniable and 'One' is arguably one of the best metal tracks for me.

It should be a 5, but gets a point off for burying Newsted’s bass in the mix.

Not my favorite by Metallica, but high level

A lot better than I expected.

I like metal so this was an amazing album for me. Not much else to say.

Yasssss

Favorite tracks: Blackened, Harvester of Sorrow, Dyers Eve Heavy freaking metal.

You can’t say it isn’t epic! I don’t like the hyper masculinity of it all, but I do like the pace and intensity and its ability to slow down and have those beautiful moments. Technical skill on point too.

Great coming back to this one. So intense and tight

Bought this when it came out, saw them on this tour. It’s a four for me. Yes, the production is an issue but it is what it is. Maybe not quite on the par of their first three albums but a ripper nonetheless and their last great album in my opinion. No real duffers on here, although I always skip One.

Metallica’s first four remain their best, and this remains fourth of the four.

Classic. Gets old after 5th song, but still passes the test of time.

Good. I like this. Metal isn’t my favourite but I enjoyed the musicianship a lot here.

I am an absolute fan of James Hetfield and Metallica, but this album kind of felt distant and long. No matter what Metallica is a legend.

Guitar riffs are crazy and heavy hitting. Hetfield kicks ass. Lars' drumming on To Live is To Die is so laughably bad. How is this man drumming for one of the biggest bands of all time?? One is such a good song, the rest make for a great supporting cast of an album.

Favourite Songs: Blackened Dyers Eve

Metallica is very hit or miss for me, and I was bracing for a rough hour+ but honestly I really liked this. This album still fell into some of the trappings of metal that drive me crazy, but overall it was a really good album, which fell short of the brilliance of their self-titled album, but not by a lot. When Metallica are at their most melodic, they're at their best, and there was a lot of that on here.

Even though heavy / trash metal is not my cup of tea, I have to say that I was surprised by this. The powerful lyrics made me look past the over-screechy voices that I don’t usually enjoy, and in this case I felt it gave a rawness to the lyrics

Good Metallica

Strong 3,5

The thing about Metallica is they're so listenable even if they're not really for me.

headbanging in the library rn

Excellent album

I've never been into Metallica, or metal in general with some exceptions, so here we go. I'm told that this is the proggiest Metallica album, so that probably makes it a good first attempt at this band for me. And yeah, several songs had moments that made me be like "wait, is this Genesis...? (lol no, it is NOT Genesis - commence headbanging) I really loved the music on this record, all the brutal bass lines, drum, and interesting guitar bits. There were great extended instrumental sections on quite a lot of the tracks; I especially liked the slower, heavy sludgey stuff, but the fast stuff of course was marvelous. Unfortunately, I found the vocals to be consistently annoying. But still, looking forward to more Metallica as I get deeper into this project. 4 stars

Classically great

ROCKS!

This is probably the longest album I’ve listened to, but I throughly enjoyed. A very very Metallica album

Not as good as Kill Em All or Master of Puppets....but not as bad as Metallica or Load.

A real classic before they sold out, they were making some great music

I may have previously said that I think Metallica has three great albums. The first three. I am extending it to four now. This is clearly the fourth of four, it’s the least known president on Rushmore (I don’t actually know who all is on Rushmore and don’t care), but it’s on there.

Good workout music tonally broken up by one of the greatest tracks Metallica has released with "One". Shocked that Dyers Eve has some of the lowest streams on this album, I always thought of it as a highlight. Anyways, throw it on when you need a squat PR.

This is relentless. I haven't had a chance to fully engage with this but I like what I heard. Shame there's no bass guitar here BUT that decision does make it a compelling listen. It gives the album its character. Metallica's first 4 albums are as good as any other band's.

Another mainstay album from my teen years. Definitely not as strong as Ride the Lightning and MoP, and still pretty solid, but ...And Justice for All was always kind of a black sheep Metallica album for me. I never clicked with it as much as the others even though it was part of my rotation. It's a long album and does get a little tedious in the middle. The old Metallica thrash and speed is there, but the album kind of drifts into the background a bit. The lyrics were less poignant on a lot of the tracks than they are on previous albums, but there's some good stuff here. The intensity is there. Lars even tried pretty hard on this album. Standouts are "Blackened" "One" and "Dyers Eve." It's very solid, but not the best of the best. 4/5.

4.2 2x catch up 1/27 fun album

Pretty awesome. Justice for all and to live is to die are amazing.

Most tracks were kinda cookie cutter vehicles for the top tier guitar work at the end

86/100. It’s hard hitting, intense, and surprisingly consistent all the way through. The riffs are sharp, the songs are long but focused. Tracks like One alone put this among their better releases. It’s not the easiest Metallica album to casually throw on, but that’s part of what makes it so strong.

Hits just the same as when I found this album in the basement as a child.

Favorite Track: And Justice For All

While not my favorite of the early (pre-black album) Metallica, there are definitely some absolute bangers on this. It's extremely well put together in my opinion. While it lacks the crunchy chaos of the earlier albums, there's a sophistication brewing here

…And Justice for All is one of Metallica’s most complex and demanding records, and also one of its most divisive. Musically, it’s a relentlessly dynamic album that rarely settles into comfortable patterns. The constant shifts in tempo, harmony, and rhythm keep the listener on edge, giving the record a progressive edge that rewards close attention. Tracks often evolve rather than repeat, which prevents the album from ever feeling stagnant or predictable. That said, this ambition can also work against it. The arrangements are dense and occasionally overlong, and the famously dry, bass-light mix can make the album feel cold and fatiguing over extended listens. While this stark sound reinforces the album’s sense of tension and paranoia, it also strips some tracks of warmth and low-end impact. I listened to the MFSL SuperVinyl master, which does a commendable job of extracting clarity and detail from the original mix. Instrument separation is improved and the overall presentation feels more controlled, though it can’t fully overcome the fundamental production choices. Overall, …And Justice for All is an intellectually engaging album that rewards patience and repeated listens, even if it lacks the emotional immediacy of Metallica’s earlier work. 8/10

A flawed thrash metal classic. The band evolved their sound by bringing in prog elements into the mix. My sole gripe with this record is that the production leaves a lot to be desired. The bass is non-existent and the album has a thin and metallic sound that robs the album of some of its punch. Every song is crafted masterfully, with Hammett's shredding and Ulrich's drumming stealing the show. Despite its 65 minute duration, the album never drags and I was hooked throughout.

I listened to it 4 times. I’m close to breaking it but not yet.

This is my childhood… I would have been six when it came out. But, early teens this was one of my football go to for getting ready for a game. Such a great band, so many great songs on this album. My favourite song off this album would be, ‘one’. This group had stood the test of time in my eyes.

Long rifts, deep sounds, dark, Metallica. Good album, lots to love about this. From that iconic Metallica sounds to the overall tone this album sets. Would listen again

Fast, complex in both musicality and theme, and very angry. 7.5/10

A blistering start with Blackened - which sets out the album's mission - to drive the listener through a new extravagantly crafted dimension of metal; of shifting time signatures, intricate guitar solos and acoustic motifs that make way for heaving riffs and James Hatfield's stacatto roaring and vowel bending. Brilliant! On a side note, it's hard to fully enjoy Metallica, knowing that James Hetfield enjoys murdering animals in the wild and is happy to have the band's music be the soundtrack to US Forces videos of prison torture at the hands of US troops on foreign soil. Kirk Hammett on the other hand seems to give a shit.

...And Justice For All and Master of Puppets have always flip flopped for being my favorite Metallica projects, and after relistening to this album today I think I can confidently say this one is once again my #1 for Metallica. The more political nature of this album always stood out to me as it never really felt like somewhere Metallica would ever go with their sound and yet they absolutely crushed it here. Say what you want about the production but honestly I didn't even mind it this time around and I was honestly just banging my head the whole time without a care in my mind. The lyrics cut like knives and the anger held within the words really helped emphasis the instrumentation. ...And Justice For All is a very jagged and sharp album that I wish more people could give love to even with its' very obvious mixing failure, it still stands the test of time much like many of Metallica's other killer projects. Really happy I have this a second chance because I forgot just how much I adore this album. Nuff said.

I love Metallica but outside of One, this isn't an album I love

Good stuff! 4*

Needs bass but what an album

Listening back over the big four, it's hard not to be supremely envious of the young metalheads crushing themselves to a sweaty half-death in some stanky mosh back when this was the generational sound du jour. There's something fair to be said about thrash really only being variations of the same general song over and over again. Of course, that's true of many genres. It's hard to deny that Metallica are pretty much the best at writing that song, anyway. Not sure how controversial this take is but I think Metallica's at their best when they're in those moments where they let Ulrich's drums take centre stage and pump this up and down bass-thumping heart-beating rhythm, rather than the flashier bright guitar riffs. fav tracks: One, Blackened, Harvester Of Sorrow, The Frayed Ends of Sanity

This was better than Master of Puppets! Apart from obviously the title track 4-5

Would have been 5 stars were it not for the fact that such verdict would place the same value on this album as on master of puppets

Ok lets get this out of the way - "Where is the bass guitar?!? WTF let Lars into the control booth during mixing?!" As much as been made about the bizarre, tinny mix (Lars' dead snare drum sounds like shit and the total burying of Jason Newsted's bass lines, for reasons no one will ever get), this is still a solid Metallica album. Obviously "One" is a classic, but I love "Blackened" as an opener, and also "Eye of the Beholder". First half is way stronger than the second, in my opinion, makes the album drag a little. In general, Metallica is another band that may not be for everybody, but I think their first 5 albums build on - and are on par with - the best of their idols Black Sabbath. Was raised on them because my brother loves them so admitting bias.

Decided to listen to this one in the gym. It really is very good, with highlights including One and the mostly instrumental To Live Is To Die. I have two main quarrels though. 1. Where is the bass? 2. Why is every track so long? Seriously, there were only two songs shorter than 6 minutes. Good thing is most of them justified their runtimes and it's such an exhilarating ride that I didn't mind that a couple overstayed their welcome a little bit.

Favorite tracks: Harvester of Sorrow, ...And Justice for All You can tell they're starting to transition from thrash to progressive metal with this album, which is definitely my preferred Metallica era 🤘🏼

Another great album. Had it for years.

Class! "Blackened" is such an amazing opener. Other highlights were "...And Justice For All, "One" and "They Frayed Ends of Sanity". This one did lose me at points but the vast majority of it was BUSSIN.

I mean…it starts off with Blackened which is a masterpiece. Two thumbs up despite Metallica burn out.

Saved this one for chest day at the gym because that just felt right. But it was actually boring me right up until I heard gunshots, which quickly transported me back to Guitar Hero III, getting my adrenaline up like crazy. And they just kept pumping it out after; The Shortest Straw has some of their goofiest lyrics, but what a gnarly solo. Dyers Eve is a great closer, but man, To Live is to Die might've been the highlight for me. Ride the Lightning is absolutely my favorite from these guys, but I definitely realized that this is a close second, despite the mixing issues.

4/5 + Every Song has like 20 great riffs + I Love the Metallica sound - to quote Kirk Hammett: "the songs were too fucking long" Fav: The Shortest Straw, Eye of the Beholder, One, Harvester of Sorrow Least Fav: ... And Justice For All

Metal will never be a bad listen (except slam) and metallica is obviously not an exception. Favorite song: blackened 7/10

eye of the beholder me ha gustado mucho algunas ya las concía, de todas formas no lo he escuchado entero aún pero me estaba gustando bastante

One of the worst sounding great albums of all time. Out of some misguided sense of loyalty and grief and hazing the new guy, James and Lars just mixed Jason’s bass right out of the mix. So we have power trio (power trip?) Metallica and sadly Lars is just not good enough for that. Fortunately for him, he met a generational talent in James Hetfield, a great songwriter and singer with a jack hammer right hand. This is the world’s greatest metal band at their Prog Metal finest, a stacked hour plus of pummeling but melodic metal. This album has kind of been relegated to the dustbin of history by the band, really only playing One these days. I saw them three times on the Black Album tour (the one after this one) and they played One and a fucking AJFA medley. Sigh. Anyway, they learned their lesson and actually included Jason on the Black Album and even though the songs were half as good, the album sounds amazing and sold ten bazillion copies. Look at that, boys, not being petty assholes is a good thing! Y'all lose a point for the worst ever mix. How has this one not been remixed yet?

I thought this was pretty cool. Compared to other metal albums I’ve heard, it focused well on the instrumentals and had some cool solos and riffs. While it dragged on a little long and was a bit too heavy for my tastes, it was still a good album all the way through. Favorite Track: Eye of the Beholder

All the yes. One is such a classic. Nothing better than Metallica to start a Monday morning. It's not my favourite, but it's still damn good.

On this album the music does the talking.  The lyrics are secondary and lift the frantic smashing to yet another level.  The music is  overlapped and transitions at exactly the right time to keep it interesting.  Its how Metal can make thrashing engaging by getting a trance like property so that you can mould into it. Not a song I dont like and I ended up just headbanging the whole way through.  Just a wierd metal elavator and I just went up and down that thing!

Now thats sounds! Megadeath lucky i listened to that first or they mightve been worse off (are they even in the same genre (from the green or from the black)) anyway great stuff

Well, I’ve been waiting for Metallica to revisit my youth and here is the first of four. Far from my fav or most memorable album, but let’s see… I don’t know why I relate to this better than other thrash/heavy metals albums on this list. Maybe the nostalgia, Hetfield’s voice or just being more technical and varied than some others 🤷🏻‍♂️ It is a bit comical at times and the mix is TERRIBLE. Funny hearing all the ways Lars is vying for attention (level, needless fills and tightness with the guitars). Bass pretty much non existent (poor Jason) but good vox. Guitars could really do with some middle and body. Can go on a bit. Title track nearly 10 mins! But just about holds interest. But can never get enough of ‘One’. Great track and so many memories and meaning for me. It’s not great, but it’s kinda endearing and uniquely Metallica.

DARKNESS! IMPRISONING ME! It's almost a shame One is so memetic and catchy because it makes it stand out over the rest of this album, and the rest of the album was pretty fun. 3.5 and feeling charitable today it is the holiday season of giving or whatever

The Frayed Ends of Sanity.

Every song is too long, but it rips.

Banging

I quite enjoyed listening to this album

I’m surprised by how much I liked this! Maybe it’s my inner young emo self enjoying it. Will listen to more

Head banging craziness

This album is the most technical out of all Metallica records. The problem with it, in my opinion, is not the production like everyone says. I actually think that the charm of it is in the fact that it sounds like it was produced in a garage. The problem is that, compared to Master of Puppets (which I personally think it doesn't have a single bad song), this album has some songs that feel like fillers, and those became popular (for example, Harvester Of Sorrow: nothing special about it, but fans love the shit out of that song). Songs like One, And Justice For All, Blackened and Dyers Eve are the ones that elevate this record. Anyway, this is Metallica at its best time in their career, and this album is great.

Classic Metallica! Those first four albums hit so hard for me. I know all the criticisms on low tuned bass, and I agree. But this album slaps. Every song rocks. Maybe it just brings me back to days of being a young 13 year old badass unaware that grunge was about to break and my entire life outlook about to change

I already know I love this album. Full of absolutely killer tracks with some brutal and beautiful riffs, even on songs I wasn't expecting.

I’m not a big Heavy Metal fan. So, I have not really listened to any album in that genre in its entirety. This was pretty good. The lyrics were clear and could understand them. It’s just that the album was way too long to the point that James Hetfield’s voice got annoying and the guitar solos began to sound the same. I could listen to this album one song at a time once in a while when I need some energy.

What an album. This is where Metallica's days of pure thrash ended, and what a swan song for that era of the band. The album famously lacks bass, with Lars Ulrich demanding that new bassist Jason Newsted's parts be mixed very low, but honestly the album works perfectly well for me in spite of the resultant dryness of its sound (and in some places, because of).

I love Metallica in bursts, but as one listen this might have overstayed its welcome by about two tracks. Still all hard as hell individually, and it blew my mind how tight the guitars sounded with the drums. Great stuff. Standouts: Eye Of The Beholder • One • The Frayed Ends of Sanity • To Live Is To Die • Dyers Eve

Awesome

Metallica doing what most metal bands are unable to do, find depth and beauty within the darkness.

I’ve learned Metallica rocks through this

I enjoyed this a lot. This list has helped me realize that I like Metallica

Nostalgic listen. One is timeless.

Rocks pretty hard. Solid

Didn't expect to like this, but it rocks.

Classic

Metallica. All that has to be said anytime 👍🏻

Me and my dad used to listen to this one

Metallica's most sophisticated work. My second favorite after ride the lightning.

The album contains "One"! What is more to say? The rest is solid metal - in the best way. 3,5

No one would ever accuse Metallica of being a prog metal band, but this is about as close as they ever got. Some absolutely crushing riffs on this one but enough changes in song structure and tempo to keep it interesting, and the longest songs they ever wrote. Blackened rips as an opener and One is somewhere up there on the list of best metal songs ever IMO. Frayed Ends of Sanity isn't noted as one of their "hits" but is awesome and has about everything you want in a metal song. The mixing/sonics are maybe a knock on it (famously very little bass) but overall this is a very good album, if maybe not quite their best.

So far there's been a distinct lack of "heavy" music on this list, so I was looking forward to this. I was never particularly into Metallica at school, but I was into music and would hang out in the music room at lunch, and I'm not sure I ever sat in that room without hearing a teenage boy play the picking part of One on an acoustic guitar. It's a genuinely fantastic song - I am admittedly a sucker for songs that are all quiet LOUD quiet LOUD, but it's just a great song regardless. Sometimes familiarity means you like singles better than album tracks, but I would say that in the case of this album, One is head and shoulders the best track here. That's not to say the rest of the album is a disappointment, One is just too good. It was really interesting reading about the way this was recorded and poor Jason Newstead's bass getting completed obliterated in the mix. I know very little about the internal politics of Metallica, but it doesn't feel like the most collegiate band to be a part of. I enjoyed this a lot helped enormously by the fact I like James Hetfield's voice a lot. It's the perfect metal voice for me. 4/5

Already listened to this one a million times. Kicks ass, too bad you can't hear the bass. If it was mixed a little better it would be a significantly closer contender for my favorite Metallica album. Not nearly as consistently strong as Ride the Lightning or Master of Puppets probably, but the first half of the album especially is top notch.

Energetisch, heavy, starke Songs.

Classic metal album. I'm always impressed with how tight this band is.

Justice for Jason

This was so much fun to listen to. Great for powerwalking in the city. Some crazy riffs although i wish they let them play out a bit longer before altering them or hitting them with fills. Standout Tracks: One and To Live is to Die

In their top 5

Extremely complex and amazing musicianship. Maybe not always an easy listen but very good

Whe this album first came out, it was the first Metallica album I had bought on CD. I hadn’t noticed the lack of bass at first — and I was 21 at the time and playing bass myself. Now whenever I hear this album I can’t unhear the fact that Lars Ulrich made the mix engineers (the same ones that mixed the first Guns N’ Roses album) turn Jason Newstead’s bass down to a severely inaudible level.

4/5 - fantastic album but not my favourite by Metallica

A classic

Dad metal hell yeah. It slaps One nitpick I have is that all metallica songs in general sound mostly the same to me including this album. That sounds is good, but I don't see why I would add more than 2 metallica songs to any playlist of mine. Not an album I would put on again probably or would specifically recommend, but good music nonetheless. 4

More Metallica. Probably should be decent. Blackened - 7/10. I like this intro. Bit screamy for my usual taste in the verse. Solid musicianship. ...And Justice for All - 8/10. Love the intro. This is classic metal that I can listen to and enjoy. That guitar solo around 5:20 SHREDS. Eye of the Beholder - 7/10. This is pretty solid. Nothing really outstanding here, but no weakness, either. One - 8/10. Nice intro. Metallica doing a power ballad is different. Not bad, just different. It's good. The Shortest Straw - 8/10. Back to the heavy, hard metal of the rest of the album. These gentlemen can SHRED. That chord progression around 4:25 was NOT what I expected. Harvester of Sorrow - 7/10. Solid metal music. The Frayed Ends of Sanity - 8/10. I'm surprised to say, I like it. To Live Is To Die - 8/10. Definitely has a Prog feel to it. Dyers Eve - 7/10. Solid. Overall Rating 3.78/5 (7.56/10). Most of this album felt very Prog Metal. Not like Dream Theatre level, but more musicianship and composition focused than "traditional" metal.

The lyrics are a bit pretentious at certain points, I remember writing poetry like this when I was fifteen. I know they wanted to pay tribute to Cliff, but good Lord the spoken words in "To Live is to Die" are just infantile. I cringe every time I hear them. Musically it's a good-to-great metal album even if they turned the bass down because they wanted to be pricks and "prank" newcomer Jason. No wonder he left eventually. Lars must be a completely insufferable person to be around for that length of time.

It’s Metallica. Come on.

A very enjoyable project by Metallica. I'm not deep enough into there discovery to know wether it's their best or not. I think it is surely one of the more finer albums the genre has to offer. One is a song for the ages.

Now that I’m older it’s actually decent

Great metal album, One is so good

Really enjoyed this one. Long songs, driving, good sound, and “One”

good album but i wish bass existed

Helped me recover from Run/DMC

I came into this album a rap fan I’ve never really listened to metal music before it I was pleasantly surprised of how much I have enjoyed this album.

4.5 stars

Liked it better than the black album

When I was a kid I saw a review that said Metallica put the h in thrash metal. I believe that to be true. The problem is my 51 year old self can’t keep up with thrash metal anymore. So while I understand the importance of this album & I love “One”, I couldn’t listen to it more than once. So, therefore the me now ranks this a 3 out of 5. But the 18 year old me that first heard this gave it a 5 out of 5 and listened to it on repeat. So I’ll split the difference, and give it a 4

Was expecting to hate it because Metallica, but honestly was quite enjoyable to listen to while working...

Ok prefer the black album

Riffalicous Bass is lost in the mix And justice for jason

"One" of their best.

Hard to find fault with any of the first four Metallica albums, though this one is maybe a little uneven?

I hadn't gotten laid in years, in part because my husband spends all his time in the garage pretending to work on his truck, but actually drinking Bud Lights and (judging by the crumbs in his beard, eating pork rinds). However, after hearing this album on repeat coming from the garage one day he came in sporting a freshly trimmed goatee like he had when we got together and (to use his words) laid down some sweet axe on me like it was the 90s. Thank you, Metallica. 4/5 - I took a star off because I could really have done without his "sexy talk" about how I have more bass than the production on this album.

Still good, production sounds a lot harsher than I remember.

The last great Metallica album imo.

8/10 metallica always slaps

Metallica's last good album.

Long progressive structures in a thrash Metal album can be exhausting.I love Metallica but being the bass mixed low here can result to dryness and always feeling that there's something missing,in contrast to the ambitious, very well played overpowered drums that takes your attention more than it should. The guitars are out of this world but the vocals average (...and anger for all). Funny thing is that i'm hearing the remastered version and still the bass is not enough,at least to me. Favourites: ...And Justice For All, Eye Of The Beholder, genius fade in,interesting drumming with changes of tempos, the guitars again saves the song, One,the best song of this album starts off magically,my favourite, drumming at some point of progression probably immitates shooting-genius-, To Live Is To Die,the guitars shine here from start to finish,my top favourite,i love this even more than One,it's ironic how slower tempos works perfectly with this band,in higher tempos they get lost in monotony at times and in this album in particular. 4/5 because you can't just overlap the insanigly good guitars and drumming(although bit louder mixed than it should).

I was very late jumping on the Metallica bandwagon. When And Justice For All dropped in the late 80’s, I was elbow deep in Classic Rock and the emerging Rap music that was sweeping the country. In short, I never saw this Heavy Metal band coming. It was the early 90’s when I finally listened to this album and I was blown away by the sound. James Hetfield was built for this band and has the perfect voice for this type of music. The guitar riffs on several tracks (specifically on the opening of Blackened) are mesmerizing and at times I think even the drum kit didn’t realize it could be played like that. (I’m looking at you One!). While most of the songs aggressively demand your attention, a few of them are less grabby and simply fill up the album. Overall this was a great listen and I look forward to giving it another go here soon.

My first job was at foodmart, this was one of my go to cassettes when collecting shopping carts in the parking lot. And I'll tell you what, been a bit since I've listened to this one, but holds up nicely. Title track is even more relevant today. I know, where's the bass? Yes, it sucks that they buried it, and it sucks even more how dirty they did Jason Newstead. But thats a different conversation. Justice gives us peak Metallica, they mastered the genre. Plenty of great thrash metal bands, but Metallica had soul and melody, I know...eyes are rolling, but when you look back at the genre it was all very riff heavy, 4:4, fast tempo , band your head throw up the devil horns stuff. Metallica gave all that but they gave us so much more to consider in their music. They weren't guys playing really fast, they were great musicians playing great music fast and heavy Justice will get nothing but love from me. Many great memories and truly a killer album. Some, myself included, consider this their swan song. Metallica evolved after this album, reached amazing heights, and good on them, but this is the last true Metallica album.

No bass
