Good but not as fun

Expected this one to wear on me by virtue of being an hour long and famously bass-less, but it's probably my favorite Metallica album on first listen? Nothing really intelligent to say about it, just I like the way the guitar chugs along on it better than on their previous albums.

A classic.

4 stars This is my 2nd Metallica album and I was impressed. I wasn’t sure that I’d like it much but it was legitimately good. A solid record. I don’t remember the whole thing and some parts dragged but all in all it was good. I knew “One” before but the rest was all new. I’ll listen again.

This is actually not my first time listening to metalica, as i listened to 2 other albums being Hardwired and master of puppets the both of them contained songs now in my playlists. My hopes are high dont let me down Not really taking notes since im studying for a math test but so far none of the songs have been bad or boring

Metal rock is not usually my cup of tea but you can’t deny the brilliance behind Metallica. Plus those guitar solos rip

Favorite Track: One

15 years old, It used to be one of my favourite albums. Nowadays I cant stand Metallica.

Liker dette albumet svært godt jevnt over.

Great album

Sounds like it's being played through a phone speaker, even when it isn't. It's one of my favourite thrash albums, but definitely not my preferred genre

Great Rock album, with one of the classics One. Just a bit to raw for my favour.

The last good Metallica album. After this, they would give production duties to Pop guru, Bob Rock, and shift from being "Metal" to "Arena Rock." This album is tight. A great deal has been made of the fact that Jason Newstead's bass was mixed out of the final product. I think that this make the album sound more aggressive and sharpens its edge. Without the comfort of warm bass tones, the music becomes more urgent and comelling. I've heard the "...And Justice for Jason" mix with the bass restored, and I don't think it's nearly as good as the original. No slight on Newstead...he was great in Flotsam and Jetsam, but his contribution is best left on the cutting room floor here. Hell, even Lars' drums sound really good.

Fuck yeah dude bro, no bass for you. Sick album though. Dildos on drummer something.

Some incredible riffs. The precision timing and complex song structures are genuinely impressive, but they do get a bit too long at times. The production/mixing is the big story with this album, and it is just a travesty what they did to Jason Newstead with this album. If his bass parts were audible, this could probably be bumped up a whole star.

It is a very thin mix but it still sounds great. I am a bass player, I've heard "...And Justice for Jason", but this album is still early days of thrash metal and it is a time capsule of ripsaw guitars and snappy drums. That's fine! The opening is a great build-up to what you know is coming: Metallica. Their riff style and solos are so distinctive. Honestly this has some of the better "live" drum sounds I've heard from 80's metal (but I am no expert - just an off the cuff observation). Toms move around in space and there are some great double-kick moments and breakdowns. "Blackened" and "One" are definitely the highlights of the album. "To Live Is To Die" is kind of a hidden gem. The lead sound really comes out of the mix because the rhythm guitar is so high-gain and compressed it almost sounds like a sound effect. Hetfield will always be the riff master, it's crazy. All in all, I definitely enjoyed it and had never listened to the whole record before.

Excellent

classic metallica.

My favorite Metallica album but is to commercial for mo Metallica fans.

Modern fuckery makes for a better appreciation for the lyrics of albums like this.

Classic Metallica album with the classic Metallica sound. While I had heard several of the songs, independently, I hadn't ever listened to the album, as a whole. Overall, this was enjoyable and will get more listens in the future.

This is gonna be another H F’ing Yeah! I think this is my fav Metallica album to be honest, SO GOOD!!

This album was my soundtrack to my walk home from summer school after failing English junior year of high school. The whole year itself was not great, and I finally just let the album in. It was heavy and angry and I needed that at that point. After that summer school phase though, I never really went through a deep dive again of Metallica until my 30s. I went on instead to find other groups and other bands that I followed for 30 years religiously. Listening today I don't feel that angst at all, but listening to the album again I understand the lyrics better and appreciate how tight the instrumentation is, in spite of the bass being kind of hiding in the background of the album. Still, overall a great album from start to finish

Old school Metallica fans may kill me for this, but those guys are militant weirdos so I'll say it: This album is better than Master of Puppets. One is a classic. Metallica fans really do get weirdly aggressive about which are the best Metallica albums, don't they? Anyway, good album. Four stars!

Virtuoso rock, full of energy.

Awesome, loved it.

Like that we used to have 6 or 7 or 9 minute songs. Favorite track: One other picks: blackened, harvester of sorrow

Good all round metal album

Damn....this one brought me back. I haven't listened to it in a long time, but I remember being 13 or 14 and wearing this one out. Listening to all the guitar work over and over. At times it makes me think of classical music. This is one of the albums that really put metal on the map for me.

Great metal album, a little flat sounding with the drums and no bass. But if you are looking to get hyped slap this one on, it will do the trick

Hell yeah, let's go Metallica. I did make the mistake of saying "I'll stay in my car until this songs over" and then had to wait 4 minutes until the song was over 💀.

Favorites: Blackened, One, To Live Is to Die Not as good as Master of Puppets, but still a really great project from Metallica. My main gripe with it however is that some of the songs have nearly a complete lack of bass, which makes them feel sort of empty. Nonetheless, this absolutely rips, and One is a serious contender for the best metal song of all time. 8.5/10

Love metallica, love a lot of songs on this album. But it really is dry sounding without the bass or much low end. Still solid album.

Good album

My middle school boyfriend was a drummer and obsessed with Metallica and I always thought it was heinous that he was a Metallica fan. Maybe I should have just ya know listened to them? (I wouldn’t have been into it the ) This album rocks. Metallica is sick.

Klassikko. Ei kyllä lähellekään Metallican paras levy. 4/5.

This is a lot of fun, a few stand out tracks, but maybe not the consistent level of master. I wasn't that keen on james' vocal in justice the track, but overall I liked it. I read afterwards about how this is the album they turned the bass right down. I can't say I noticed especially but I did notice there was some booming in the drums which might have been because there was a lot of space in those frequencies. It certainly didn't ruin the album for me, but I wonder if this would be marked higher if the bass was also as in your face as the guitars.

Classic metal album, great listen.

love love just kinda gets a lil boring in some parts imo

Iconic. Some songs are a bit to long for me but overall tho album is a banger. Takes me back to my childhood.

The post-Cliff Burton death album. Is it lacking in bass? Yes. I don't blame Newstead for that, though, he got the short end of the stick there. It's metal, it's thrash, but it's very… consistent with not a whole lot of variety (it looped on me and I didn't even realize the album ended). For the era, it was awesome, and it's still worth a listen if you like metal.

Lulls a bit in the middle, but overall it's just a fun metal album and most of the runtime is a thrill

One is one of the best songs of all time but the rest of this is a little one note for me. 3.5 but i'll but it as a 4

If it weren’t for the pointless instrumental I’d give this a 5. One of my favourite Metallica records

Definitely one of their best. “One” is a great song.

4/5. This freakin' rocks. It's like they took the concept of Master of Reality by Sabbath with multiple riffs, and doubled the length of each song. They bring it all the way up and the guitar and drums are doing the heavy lifting here. The bass is severely missing from the mix and although that does make the listening experience less enjoyable, the album as a whole is banger after banger. This definitely felt more technically impressive than lyrically, but it was still a good time. I wouldn't say it's perfect, as some tracks do sound the same, but it was still great. Best Song: One, Eye Of The Beholder, To Live Is To Die, Harvester Of Sorrow

Yay for metal

good shit

Not as good as master of puppets

Everyone knows One and maybe ...Nnd justice for all but this album as much more than those 2.

Favorites: harvester of sorrow, frayed edges of sanity. Overall, goes hard. Pretty solid sound, though I was a little surprised how similar it sounded to Death Magnetic given that the albums released like twenty years apart. Still good. 8/10, 4 stars.

Box standard thrashy metal.

I finally understand Beavis and Butthead now... This RULES. A metal symphony! Half a point off because it really is long. But I enjoyed this! 3.5

was good actually sick cover art too

One of the things I remember about this album was looking up the remastered version on youtube where someone had really kicked up the bass in the mix so it sounded way better than on the original. It's a common complaint that you can't really hear Cliff's bass on the album despite him being universally recognised as an amazing player. Spent a fair amount of time playing along to this one too learning the riffs from Blackened I think the first song I heard off this album was when I was watching Kerrang TV in the 2000s and the video for One was playing on there fairly regularly. Telling the story of a soldier who's left blind mute and paralysed. The video was cut with clips from a movie that, and it was pretty scary at the end, really haunting when the soldier is asking to be killed in Morse code.

Go with 3 or 4 out of 5

Absolute banger of an album though it is probably too long and a little too much of the same dynamic. Still, that dynamic consistently works and produces some combustible playing and great songs. "One" is an all time great song and others like "Eye of the Beholder" and "Blackened" are fantastic as well. I like the classical guitar interludes of "To Live is to Die" as well. Docked a star because it is too much of a good thing.

Badass 8/10 great rock

Just a good metal album I probably should have gave master of puppets a 5 by the way but it’s too late now

While metal is a genre I typically don’t enjoy, this is the second album in a couple of weeks that has me reassessing that thought. I truly did not expect to like this album, aside from the song “One” which I know and figured was an outlier. Reading about this album, with words like “brutal” used to describe it, made me very apprehensive. But I liked it. I don’t care for Lars’ drumming overall, but the rest is quite good. A four star record.

It is a shame about the mixing, because I feel that this is just one special sauce from being truly bone-shattering

Very good album held back by weird production choices. The drum tone is very dull. Usually want some pummeling drums in thrash metal and these are not hitting except for some of the double bass drum parts. Also wish you could hear the bass at all. And at 65 minutes, I feel like they could've tightened it up a bit. Still a very enjoyable listen

The first CD I ever owned. One, still love it.

This is talent, you can feel the synergy between instruments and the songs flow nicely

Phenomenal album, perfect example of talent, creativity and execution. One is a brilliant song, it only missed out on a 5 because as good as the album was, it didn't speak to me personally.

The last round of the prog style Metallica. Cliff's influence is sorely missed. It's no surprise that there's so little audible bass on this record. Cliff was a hard act to follow! Still, Blackened and One are among the best of the pack of Metallica songs.

The One music video is still in my head after all these years. The rest sort of sounded like generic Metallica. 4* Highlights: one

Surprisingly good. For a metal band

One of the best Metallica albums there is tbh

I hadn't heard most of this album before but it features a lot of the Metallica you know and love. Heavy chugging riffs, tight composition, great dynamic range. One is an all-timer of course

the best songs: -one -to live is to die overall rate 2.5

--Blackened...pretty awesome --...And Justice for All...not impressed with the first few minutes. but it ultimately rocks --Eye of the Beholder...it's fine. James Hetfield starts to drift into parody of himself --One...nice change of pace but the lack of bass is really evident here. Great guitar solo at the end --The Shortest Straw...\m/\m/\m/ --Harvester of Sorrow...weaker than earlier tracks but still a headbanger --The Frayed Ends of Sanity...didn't care for the first half. Second half fux --To Live is to Die...the longest track and the least interesting --Dyers Eve...technically impressive. Just okay as a song. Confusing ending

Rocks.

Strong 4.5 stars

A classic. Technical but kinda raw. Metal but still melodic in a way.

Bueno.

This album is amazing. Clif dies in a bus accident, so they hire Jason to play bass. It goes on to get them radioplay with One, win all kinds of awards, well except that grammy. They were robbed that year and I'm a Jethro Tull fan. Then they tour the world on it, and after they make the Black album. Completely changing their sound. So this album is the end of phase one and the beginning of phase two for Metallica. The lyrical side is great, musically it's just so dense with riffs it's wild. Every song has huge sections that make you want to learn guitar. The solos are tight. The only issue there is they decided to mess with the new guy Jason and turned down the bass in damn near all the tracks. The album suffers from this. When I want to listen to this I always have to adjust the eq far more than other Metallica albums, well except Death Magnetic. It's a great album that I wish they would remix. Great album, historic as far as music goes, one of the the best trash metal albums around.

pretty cliched and his vocals-AH are really annoying-AH but things that become cliche were usually good till everyone got fed up of them. some great music and technique but mostly sounds really thin and overproduced. felt quite jarring when 'one' popped up, which stands head and shoulders above the other tracks

Banger! Meeeeen, all in all very good very nice.

I'm not sure I realized how bright the recording/engineering on this album was. The slappy attack on the bass drum kick that is almost snare like. I'd like to hear this on vinyl to hear how much of this is digital artifacts vs how they intended their sound. Anyway, honestly not feeling this aged as well as I'd have expected. I was expecting a solid 5, finding only a middling 3 as it drones on. "One" stands out with such an unbelievable intro and build, with "Shortest Straw" kicking hard right after. OK, the second half has been better than the first and it's creeping up to 4 with 3 tracks remaining. But alas it has ended as it began with "To Live Is To Die" being a bit of musical masturbation that lost my interest. At least it left on a high note with Dyers Eve.

Classic

Not my fav BUT I can recognize genre greatness when I hear it

Killer album but the production really brings this album down. Probably one of my least favorite Metallica albums because of how it was recorded. (Second to you know what.)

Very good

pretty damn good

Excellent Album, but just not the same after Cliff died. He was the heart and sole of the band.

I have to say, I've never been a big Metallica fan, that's for sure. On the other hand, this album has always been my favorite Metallica album. It's the most progressive album of theirs, it's really really pleasant with some classic songs and my favorites from the band. The only issue is of course the lack of bass, obviously - it's diabolical. But well, to be honest, I can't deny how influential Metallica always was and how much impact on metal music that I love they had. Add that to the fact that this list doesn't have that huge of a competition of my actually favorite albums besides a few, I might aswell rate this one like that...

Long time Metallica fan and just recently discovered that since this was Jason Newstead's first record and the first record since the Cliff Burton's passing, the rest of the band mixed the bass way down so it's barely audible. This used to be my favorite Metallica record but I have to dock it a star for that.

Shortest Straw, Challenge Liberty 1001 Albums Generator 62 (06/27/2025) Metallica at their most progressive and technical. At least 3 absolute all time classics on here in Blackened, ...And Justice For All, and One. Harvester of Sorrow has always been a favorite of mine as well. Favs: Blackened ...And Justice For All Harvester Of Sorrow Least Fav: To Live Is To Die

Lars hates bass

I'm not a huge fan of metal but I did enjoy To Live Is To Die.

Kind of ok. Hardcore

One was my mom’s favorite Metallica song. The album holds up very well.

listened to before

Classic! One is 👌

I love this album cause listen to it as a kid on loop. Being a bit more objective the melodies are very similar in a lot of the songs and too many instrumental pieces that makes it seem less hardcore than it was when I was a kid. Not a perfect album like I remembered.

This is definitely not as great of a Metallica album as their other ones that we've had on here - the songs sound great, and I wish we could give half ratings, so I would give this 3.5 stars but I've been rounding things down. Their solos are great, so despite the meh overall vibes, I would say that this would maybe get a 4, even though I think I rated the other albums 4s because they were not absolutely perfect.

To paraphrase The Onion: Humanity still producing new arts as though Metallica’s ‘...And Just for All’ doesn’t already exist

The last Metallica album worth listening to. Maybe there was still some Cliff Burton magic left for this one. Somehow the weird bassless mix works as kind of a tribute to Cliff.

Blackened One And Justice for all Frayed ends of sanity Dyers Eve

i'm still a bit new to metal as a whole and still finding my footing in an appreciation for the genre. i am finding i like metallica (hot take, i know) but i think between this album and my previous listens, this one ends up more in the middle. the musicianship is great and i like the vocals well enough, but the songs here did not grip me as much as others. i still enjoyed it to a certain extent, but it didn't wow me as much as 'master of puppets' did, for example. not bad! just not my favorite either.

Metallica's Black Album received a lot of flak when it was released because it featured a more "watered-down" Metallica sound that went away from the thrash roots they once had. I can see that argument. The Black Album was also a gateway drug for others to get into Metallica's back catalog and that holds true for me. Without the Black Album, I probably would not be as familiar with ...And Justice for All and Master of Puppets. I call this Jam Thrash Metal because it often feels like they are just jamming at times and the song lengths reflect that. One and Eye of the Beholder are two of my favorite songs on here and One may be my favorite Metallica song overall. ...And Justice for All does get a bit lengthy towards the end which is why I probably can't give it five stars but it's been on my personal playlist for a while now and will continue to be there.

‘TALLICA RULZ!!!!!

Metallica’s final thrash album. The songs are great, the production is okay. It’s a still a good workout album that I revisit often.

One is an epic tune

Great riffs, syncopation. Good era for metal.

I think a 3.5 would be pretty bassed.

From the surface, I thought of Metallica as a talented band that played music that I wasn't so interested in. Thrash metal always sacrificed depth for intensity in my opinion, but I think I've come to be fairly surprised. This album has plenty of depth in its composition which was great to hear. I hear slices of other works that I've heard in the past. King Crimson, Rush, early Phish and Slint to name a few. The real highlights of this album had me deeply engaged into what they offered. For one thing, hearing different time signatures and complex moments during songs had me interested from the get go. I'm a sucker for that showing of band chemistry. There's a mixture of impressive and beautiful moments (the tribute to Cliff Burton near the end). And then there's the lack of bass and some "ok" songs down the line, but I think the good overshadows the bad here. I don't know if I will return to this project in a full listen again but now I know that Metallica isn't all speed and fingers. There's something here to appreciate, but I haven't heard it all yet (Master, Ride). (Blackened, And Justice For All, One, The Frayed End, To Live Is To Die, Dyers Eve, 7/10, 4/5 on this scale)

The last time Metallica actually made something that was worth listening to. I like the technicality here and the album feels pretty consistent in general. I do think "One" is a bit overrated. Lyrically it's great but musically it's lacking 8/10 Favourite: Blackened Least Favourite: The Frayed Ends of Sanity

The final album of Metallica's golden era succeeds in spite of itself. The band moves away from the verse-chorus-verse song structure of previous albums in favor of longer songs with less singing and more intricate time signatures and playing styles. It's not my favorite Metallica, but it's a solid release, and I'd be lying if I didn't catch myself humming "...And Justice For All" at work, but the lack of Cliff Burton (and any audible bass in general) leads to a diminished sound. Edit: I've been listening to this more and I don't know why I didn't just give it a 4. 80's Metallica rules

This album is the sound of Metallica pushing themselves to the brink structurally complex, brutally cold, and unapologetically heavy. It’s also the last time they really earned the “metal” in their name before things got, well, lets just say radio-friendly. There’s an urgency and anger running through these tracks, from the relentless gallop of Blackened to the towering, doom-laden sprawl of One, all held together by relentless riffing, labyrinthine arrangements, and the kind of songwriting that dares you to keep up. The production is shocking though the infamous near-absence of Jason Newsted’s bass still raises eyebrows (or blood pressure), and Lars Ulrich’s drums sound like someone hitting a wet cardboard box. But somehow, that dry, abrasive sound suits the atmosphere: there’s no warmth here, just machinery grinding through themes of corruption, control, and the breakdown of justice itself. The title track and Dyers Eve in particular stand out as brutal showcases of technical thrash, loaded with vitriol and precision. It may not be their most accessible album, but it’s arguably their most ambitious. You can feel the band teetering on the edge of collapse under the weight of their own intensity and that’s what makes it so captivating. After this, the sharp edges start to smooth out, and Metallica shifts into stadium-rock territory. But here, they’re still snarling, still complex, still uncompromising. The last truly great Metallica metal album before they start to suck and their “rock band” era begins.

Never known much about Metallica but know they are very popular. A sound ahead of it's time. I get the hype. Listening to them as I continued cleaning my shed on a cold, rainy winters night.

I think what this list is doing to me is mostly showing me a bunch of stuff that I rate 3 and that ends up pushing me to want to rate the few albums that do stand out 5 just because they are a breath of air. This is one of them... I don't think this is a 5/5 album, but I still had the impulse to give it a 5 anyway Standouts One The Shortest Straw Harvester Of Sorrow 4/5

Enjoyed it more than I thought. Sounded kind of flat though.

Everytime I listen to Metallica, I like them more. This album did not disappoint.

Seeing that it was a metallica album I was expecting to like it more than the two I've heard so far, and I was right. This is the first one I felt so far of actually wanting to listen to the whole thing, which i did. I felt that the songs were more interesting than the ones of the other albums but on this album the songs are a little too long and drawn out for me to want to add them to my playlist. I'm being serious when I say that it is very pleasant. 7/10

Metallica has taken soul taken my hearing taken my heart taken my penis left me in a world of pain

YEYEYEEAHAHHHHOHHHHHHHWWOOOAOIIIIHHHHHHH WOMMAAANNNNN Where's the bass??? Has anyone seen the bass??? Where's the confounded bass??

Good gym music but songs r too long

Justice for Metallica v napster

Was teetering towards a 3/5 in the middle, but the last 2 tracks really fuck. Ez 4/5

I mean come on... it's Metallica! Not their best album, but still. 4/5

Nice, high 4

Wonderful commentary on the state of the US and still unfortunately quite relevant almost 40 years later. If I ever want to just be angry about the injustice in the US I often go to this album.

4 stars because "To Live is To Die".

One has got to be one of the best songs OAT. Wasn’t familiar with the rest of the album but it’s awesome metallica rocks

I'm certainly not a metal head, but to me this feels like the best Metallica album. At least its the one that I would listen to in Middle School. What stood out to me then, and what stands out to me now are 2 things: first, the political commentary around war and the justice. And then second, the use of spanish guitar riffs that then lead into heavier and bigger riffs. This album goes really hard and the drums and guitar work are really solid. There is also a hint of the blues with a lot of the guitar solos, which feels really fun. One is my favorite Metallica song.

Crappy mix, but a solid metal album.

would have been a 5 but the instrumental breaks were a bit long for my taste

I think Master of Puppets is a better album, but then again that album doesn't have "One"

Just great!

A good One 7/10

Pleasant surprise, really enjoyable

classic

This album jumps out to a hot start with a great speedy shredder of a track in Blackened and does not look back for the next hour. James' vocals blend the perfect balance of yelling, singing, and riding the rhythm. With a new bassist having to fill some very big shoes, Jason Nested did a great job in hold his own in his first of many Metallica albums. The long tracks might be the one downside of this album, but also a reason it is so amazing. James and Lars wanted to take their catalog to the next level and create a album with so much range and complexity. In one song you can have 3-4 small songs happening with different tempos and and several different guitar riffs. It makes for an epic run of thrashing. This is not Metallica's best album and neither is it perfect, but it is a great progression of the bands music as they go on to create great music for the next 30+ years after this album. 9.0/10 #27/1001

This would be an easy five if the mix wasn't total butts and maybe 10 minutes were cut from some of the crushingly long songs.

As a huge Metallica fan in my youth, it’s fun to see them on this list. They are one of the most influential bands for young musicians because their music sounds cool, and it’s easy to learn to play, no matter the instrument. That’s not to say their music is simple, it’s just easier for those learning an instrument to try and learn. Listening to this album now, I realize that Metallica is the Weezer of metal. Easily approachable and fun to listen to.

Easily one of my top 5 albums by The Metal Lickers. Aside from the famously bad production and poor treatment of Jason Newsted (from Battle Creek) this album fucking RIPS. Just aggressive thrash front to back. Very nostalgic for me because I remember listening to this with Dan Caroll while fishing in my backyard. Anyway if this had proper bass on it I think this would be their best album. 4

I was thinking for a second that since I don't love thrash and I haven't heard Metallica in forever, I would not be into this album anymore, even if 15 y/o me had this as my favorite (warts and all). I'm happy that it turned out to be as enjoyable as I remember if not more, which is always a pleasant feeling, not just the validation that your kid self was onto something but also appreciating the parts of this album that work so well that they genuinely make up for the extremely uneven mix with extremely loud drums and guitar and almost non existent bass (which is a meme by now), these problems are apparent and it does hinder some tracks (Blackened ESPECIALLY sounds hollow without a louder bass), the thin sound can be a disappointing when you wanna hear some good and muscular metal; yet, I think they managed to pull so many creative riffs and construct long songs that don't feel like a chore to listen to, like seriously the title track is so catchy with that descending guitar riff in the bridge and the way James sings the chorus just gets stuck in my head. An absolutely messy album but feels like it manages to still be worth all the while (if a little long)

gostei mais do que achei que gostaria!

My first Metallica exposure was “One”.

Blackened and ...And Justice for All have some pretty good riffs. One is an awesome classic. The Shortest Straw is stupid. The Frayed Ends of Sanity has some nice guitar work. To Live is To Die as well, with a kind of cool classic guitar section fade out and fade back in at the end. Dyers Eve is a good upbeat closer. Could use some better production for a 1988 album, it was a bit tinny sounding with little dynamic, Iron Maiden has albums 5 years prior that sound better. Overall pretty good, most songs were enjoyable but most of the album sounded about the same.

8/10 I can't apologize for liking metallica. I want to. I want to think its repetitive and stupid noise. but I can't. I like it. damn you nostalgia. 4-14-2025

This has obvious quality. The musicianship is sky high, there is real light and shade which can be rare for this music and there is actual tunes and hooks to keep me engaged. It really merits its place on this list and the the high water mark for heavy rock. Its not my thing, but i appreciate it.

Sorry guys, I love this shit 🤷🏻‍♀️

good metalica era for sure

I am a “First Four” purist and love this album. Metallica was my first real concert at 14, with friends and without parents, thus sealing a special place in my heart. Thanks mom and dad for somehow letting that happen. They were touring the Black Album at that time and I knew every riff and line of every album up to that point. The set list was amazing, including their Justice Medley and One as a standalone encore track. Too many years later, I can still imagine the feeling of the pyro hitting my body. Pure magic. Fun fact: One of the dudes behind me pissed himself, and it was early in the show. Mixed with that love of AJFA though is also a healthy helping of disgust. The production, while still not the worst in their catalogue (St. Anger is the king of the trash pile), is still an absolute and objective embarrassment. They have gone on record with some pretty weak explanations around the stripping of the bass from the album (we were tired, our ears were wrecked from tour, the guitar was super scooped so they had to turn it up, the bass tracks are similar to the guitar tracks so turn them down), all the while stating the intention wasn’t to fuck over Newsted. All of this comes across as disingenuous and unprofessional given the ability to successfully compose and participate in the production of RTL and MOP. These accounts are also contradicted by engineers and producers working on the project who note the omission was very much purposeful, to the point where one of the engineers wanted his name removed from the project because he knew he was going to suffer for it. Also of note is that Newsted basically recorded his parts in isolation. No feedback on structure or sound from the band. Just him and his engineer trying to make it work. It is hard to believe that grief and hazing might make it to the final mix of a record of this calibre, but here we are. The composition is tight, the execution is great, the final mix is lacking, and it is gross. If you are so inclined, you can listen to a version of “And Justice for Jason” on youtube or Sound Cloud. I also would not categorize that as a perfect mix as it is slightly too bass forward at times and the tone could use a tweak, but man, what a difference. Much more full and powerful. Give it a go. All that said, the bass shenanigans aside, monumental as they are, are still not enough to tank a masterpiece of an album that will deservedly go down as one of the best of the genre. 10/10 would complain again.

Cold, oppressive, intelligent and tight as all fuk - this is when Metallica were old enough to be world weary but still young enough to be furious. It's a great album, seeing Metallica at their most expansive and proggiest with the overly clean production (debated to death!) underlining the deliberately technical music - a definite contrast to the wilder and more organic edge to the previous albums (which are also terribly mixed for bass!) and that distinct vibe means it ends up as a lot of people's favourite Metallica album. For me, I miss the wildness and variety of the Cliff records (always loved Jason though!) as this one has too many songs which sound similar and it drags on a bit too long. Favourite tracks: Blackened, One, Eye of the Beholder, To Live is to Die, Dyers Eve

# Album Name: And just for all # Artist: Metallica # Rating: 4/5 # Comments: A very solid 4. The quality of the band and tracks on this album is good. One being the stand out track. Theres something missing from the album. Its not on the same level as the black album but a good listen. Biggest downside if the length of some tracks. # Top Tunes: One # Would I listen to it again? Yes

I have always loved this album, and it is always my favourite Metallica album... it's missing some bass, but it's just a great album.

Classic. Fantastic. Not the best but pretty dang good

Very good. It could be great if the bass had been mixed properly. The guitar tones are great, and Kirk Hammet did very good solos.

Maybe an odd compliment but I love how abruptly the first track breaks to nothing. I like the "soft" moments, like the initial riff of ...And Justice for All. And One - I always liked that track. I can really see how you might love this album. But it falls into that sort of not for me category. Too heavy mostly. Fave Tracks: One, To Live is to Die 3.6/5

People think the mix is crap. I think it’s kind of fitting. Not much bass at all, but it gives the riffs a specific 80’s metal feel.

Favourites: Blackened, Eye of the Beholder, One, To Live is to Die

Geez. Metallica is mesmerizing! I just wouldn’t turn it. But when it was on I was not mad

I don’t listen to Metallica as much as I used to, but to be honest I don’t think I’ve ever heard this album all the way through. Solid Metallica album, heavy great, riffs, but also there was a lot of weird things going on with added instrumental sections and what not? I’ll need to revisit Metallica more. Probably a 3.6/5.

Tiene muchos otros muy valiosos

Another great album by the band, the culmination of the "thrash era" and rightfully so. Setting aside the obvious drawback of the bad mix, which features no bass, this is a solid album throughout. Highlights of the album are, as usual for the band, the riff galore, great lyrical themes, technical precision and advanced song structures. The band lean more towards the thrash side on this album, there are still prog elements, but they are not as prominent as on Master of Puppets. It would be a shame not to mention One, which is one of the best metal songs of all time, gives me the chills every time. To anyone who loved the song I recommend the movie Johnny Got His Gun from 1971, which talks about the soldier who was the inspiration for the song One, that is some dark and disturbing stuff. It's a real shame the internal quarrels got in the way of the music and Jason's bass was removed as a result, because of primadona Lars. There are versions online which add the bass back and the album, of course, feels more alive and natural, and less hollow and artificial. Although, I have to admit, the lack of bass gives the album this robot-like feel and precision. Considered to drop this to a 3 star because of the bass/mastering issues, but leaving it at a 4.

Man, this is a tough one. I love Metallica and had this album on repeat. But I’m stuck between a 4 and a 5 (probably another example of a 10 point scale helping with some of the nuance). Let’s go with 4.5 and round down. Great album but just doesn’t tip the scale for me.

Iconic tracks get this to a 4 for me. But dang yall can you edit yourselves?? I get that One should be a long epic, but let’s trim down some of these 7-9 min songs. Basically my critique of all Metallica albums….. 4/5

Flawed production and poorly mixed, nearly inaudible bass yet still it kicks ass!

To me it's a drier, more sterile productoin than previous albums of Metallica.

Kick ass all around. Riffs, drums, vovals, pacing, etc.

4 stars not so much for the album itself but what it represents for me. My fave metallica album will always be ride the lightning but justice was the first of theirs where i was old enough to have be part of the experience of it coming out, buying it, watching the music videos, and yes, the grammy snub to jethro tull. im tired of the 'no bass' arguments, we get it, the mix sucks, but it is what it is. i dont know how it lands with those who were not there at the time, if it holds the same or less weight. but it is indeed an important album. (but go listen to lightning if given the option)

Metallica react to the loss of their beloved bassist by hiring a new one, and getting really upset about the justice system. Without Cliff though, they needed to find a direction and they leant into being prog thrash before the genre even really existed. The problem with that was, simply, that Metallica works best when they have a wider range of moods to aim for, and subjects to write on. Master of Puppets knew it, but this one forgets at times. They also forgot to tell Jason Newstead where to place his bass lines, and (by his own admission) ended up cluttering up the mix enough that they felt they had to almost mix him out. That being said, some of Metallica's best songs are here, and none of them are bad. You just wish they'd end a minute or so earlier than they do. Tangent: People who care about Metallica 'selling out' don't have anything interesting to say. Favourite Song: And Justice for All Least Favourite: Harvester of Sorrow

Well how about that for my first pick! This is an album I've heard hundreds of times being a huge metalhead as a teenager in the 80s. I absolutely loved this album as a kid and still really like it. I saw them live on this tour which was a highlight of my youth. But as many listeners have noted over the years, the production is terrible with compressed buzzy guitars, clicky drums, scooped mids, and zero bass guitar. Tons of amazing riffs, but honestly the album is a rather bloated affair. Some of the songs really overstay their welcome, especially the title track. End the damn song already! Nevertheless, this album is fun and will always have a soft spot in my heart. I'm not sure I would have included this one in the book though. Ride the Lightning is much better, but sounds too close to MoP sonically I guess. And really, maybe an album by a decent metal band would be more deserving. Voivod? Death? Celtic Frost? 4/5. Album 1/1001

Pretty good album love a lot of the music

I’ve never really loved Metallica, though I’ll admit the self-titled black album is a banger and a classic. I don’t love thrash, so their early stuff never appealed to me. I have to say, though, that this album has stood the test of time. It’s funny, though, how something that is so crazy and subversive and “hard” now seems pedestrian and almost mundane! That’s not a commentary on the album, but rather the changing tastes of society. I’d give this a 3.5 if I could, and I’ll bump it up to 4 stars for a couple of reasons. The dumb reason is because I’ve had a few albums recently that I would have rated 3.5 stars but it dodnt feel right to give them 4 - this one seems about right. The second reason is because I’m well aware of how many awesome rock bands were launched because of Metallica in general, and this album specifically.

pretty good

The start of Metallica making overlong songs, but contrary to what would follow the songwriting is strong enough to justify their length. Never understood why everybody's freaking out about the lack of bass. It's thrash metal, do people complain about that for Slayer?

The last good Metallica album. A bit too long though.

Even if it's not my favorite from Metallica, And Justice For All is the band at the highest peak of their art. It's thrash metal mixed with a touch of prog. It's rebellious, conscious, dark and powerful. A true classic.

As far as Metallica goes, this is a favorite of mine. I don't listen to it as much anymore but it's always a good one to return to occasionally.

Brilliant metal!

Not as good as I remember, the first side up to One is bloody good, after that it’s nothing special. Still gets 4 stars for the first side and general consistency 3.75/5

and jason was there too guys I swear

Imagine how good this would be if you could hear the bass!

For me this is as classic metal album as it gets. If you know Metallica you recognize their sound straight away and the album delivers exactly what you expect. Nothing new to me but certainly an enjoyable listen through again.

I am a very basic Metallica fan. I like Master of Puppets and The Black Album. I've never listened to this album, but I like it a lot. It fucking shreds. This is by far the most proggy I've heard them and it's doing it for me. It's great background music for people who are super hardcore, like me. This has the potential to become my favorite Metallica album. I've listened to the other two I like so much that they've gotten a little stale. This is a breath of fresh air. 8/10

This was my introduction to Metallica back in the day. The production is definitely a hinderance and burying Jason Newsted's bass wasn't a great idea. But the songs are strong (albeit long) and still pack a punch.

Jedna z tych płyt, których trzeba słuchać głośno. Mocne brzmienie, trochę mechaniczne, ale razem z silnym, rozpoznawalnym wokalem tworzy spójną całość. Nie jest to moja muzyka, ale doceniam. 7/10

Great album but the one drawback is that at times some songs sound too similar. Love One and Harvester of Sorrow.

Woah, what an album. Makes me reappreciate people coming together and just playing so... tightly. Great changes and transitions. I started getting a little bored near the end, but a great piece of work regardless.

After this album, I'm left thinking about the musical powerhouse that Metallica is. Thrash metal receives a lot of unjustified flack from society at large but there is a lot to appreciate. I even think it can be argued that Metallica raised up thrash metal, but I'm not here to prove that today. Metallica has always been captivating with their instruments and musical talents. I find their instrumental songs or sections to be their strongest asset. That isn't to say James Hetfield's vocals aren't iconic or powerful, of course. But on ...And Justice for All, Metallica steps further than their earlier material and enter into progressive territory. Their instrumental pieces are beautifully constructed, drive the beat hard, and take you on journeys. This makes for a very satisfying listen.

Don't get me wrong, this is a good album, but it is a bit more average by Metallica standards. What this album does have, though, is "One", which is definitely one of Metallica's best songs all around. But even with the consideration that this is a more "average" Metallica album, it is still probably about a 3.5 for me, and good enough to round up.

Really good for what it is, but I need to be in the mood for metal to want to listen to this. But it really rocks, that's for sure. Doesn't sound dated either, except for the vocals (which I only feel are dated because I think of Metallica as dated)

Rååkkkkkk!! One is the best one though.

Drums are a lot

First half head banging, second more like banging heads

Hey that was really good! Love the solos, songs were long but when you're having fun it ain't bad.

I’ve been a metal fan pretty much most of my conscious life. Like any other metal aficionado, I’m a huge fan of early Metallica. Many are critical about this albums production, specifically the mixing of the bass, and I agree with that criticism. It’s not that the bass is completely missing, but what we do hear is so relentlessly womp-wompy that it’s dizzying. It’s like a constant vacuum whooshing that sucks all of the pressure out of your ears, leaving a mild headache in its wake. With that said, some of James and Kirk’s best riffs are littered throughout. “One” might be the band’s all-around best song. The progressive bent is a welcome addition that disappears as soon as this albums over. What happens next is their well-established turn towards a more pop-oriented hard rock sound. Anyway… 4.2/5

Just good ol' school Metallica, nice.

There is so much to listen to here. One is of course the big hit single, but deservedly so - the track shows off everything Metallica has to offer. Storytelling, relentless beat like he’s getting paid per strike, melodic bass and beautiful guitar work, and the vocals carry the emotional weight of a truly unique piece of music. The remainder of the album is a bit more straightforward metal, done by the best. To live is to die shows off their musical artistry. Only down side for me is the production compressed the music so heavily where the dynamic range is practically nonexistent- to hear a live version will take the listening experience to another level!

This album makes me want to grow out a mullet and buy a jean jacket. It's not their best record, but it's quintessential Metallica. And it's the on that list the Grammy to Jethro Tull. The Grammys still can't get this category right. Hatfield is the king of thrash rhythm. And Hammett is a soloing monster. Everyone is tight through all the time signature changes thanks to Ulrichs direction. Essential Tracks: One, Harvester of Sorrows Skip:To Live Is To Die

Solid album and totally iconic

This was not from their thrash metal era, right? This is really nice for work. I also really liked the slower Songs

In ‘88 I was fully immersed in alternative so I missed this album and didn’t really discover Metallica till the black album. First time listen and man it rocks!

Not their best but fantastic.

Blackened- 👍 …And Justice For All- really good song Eye Of The Beholder- like the vocals, sweet bass. One- haunting track. The Shortest Straw- riff of the blower Harvester Of Sorrow-

Not my favorite Metallica album but still good

This album is pretty cool and surprising because I have not loved Metal music in the past, 4/5 👍

Metallica is, with black Sabbath, the most accessible metal band for a new listener, vecause their music is not too extreme and they're well recognized all over the world as one of the biggest bands of all time. Despite having a lot of albums generally considered bad or divisive, like st. Anger, metallica is always mentioned in the top 4 of thrash metal , but why? The answer is obviously their first albums run. Some consider it a 5 albums run that ends with the black album, others leave it out because it's too poppy. However, it's indisputable that... And justice for all is part of these incredible albums run. The overrall sound of the album is fantastic, every song sounds very diverse while still maintaining a cohesion, and the balancing beetween vocals and more impressive solos is perfect. Despite every song being pretty long, not a single one sounds dragged on. This album contains some of the most loved Metallica songs, like One, but still manages to sound very good as a full experience. Not a 5 stars because it's not my favorite of theirs but every album of their first 4 albums run could be considered their besg and I wouldn't absolutely be mad at it.

All sounds the same, but in a good way

This is #day162 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and... here's to the first Metallica album on the list. Now, including Master of Puppets and the self-titled album is an obvious choice, but I’m curious why ...And Justice for All won over Ride the Lightning (arguably their best effort). This was my first time listening to the album front to back, and while it's solid throughout, I can see why people complain about the missing bass in the mix. Maybe Metallica intentionally subdued that space to honor Cliff Burton, even though this is the first album to feature Jason Newsted? What stands out most is the variety of themes: political and legal injustice, government corruption, censorship, and the horrors of war. The album is dark, aggressive, and super technical. The song structures even lean a bit prog, if you will. I'm not sure I'm fully into this side of the band. I still prefer their first three albums (or rather the second and third), though I also enjoy their '90s material. On the other hand, you still get an hour of Metallica mastery, and isn't that the main thing? This is a 4 out of 5. Looking forward to #day163.

Probably the weakest out of their first four albums, but still very good. The mixing is notorious for being pretty ass, some of the songs are a minute or two too long, and the lyrics can be a bit all over the place, but overall this is still a great thrash album.

I’ve always loved this album but the mixing is awful..absolutely no bass so it’s a 4

I just can't in good conscience give an album a 5 if they've mixed out the bass

I can’t deny it’s a good album, it’s just too straight and dry for me. Some beautiful parts thrown in there tho

I liked it so much...

I have a hazy recollection that Metallica did something disagreeable back in the wild west days of online music but I've forgotten the details of what they did wrong. Something like an overly aggressive response to music piracy? I'm choosing not to look it up. But for a long time I've had it in my head that Metallica is kind of a heel band, and I've been disinclined to seek them out. That said - this album's pretty good, pretty consistently over its 65-minute runtime. "One" is the standout track and sits a tier above any of the other songs on the album; I was singing or humming it most the rest of the day. The rest of the album's a little less memorable but still very enjoyable. I'm rating this one at 4 stars but it's a high 4, and I think it's pretty possible there's another Metallica album out there that could get a 5 from me (peeking at the 1991 album's track list - maybe that one?). Even if Lars Ulrich unleashed the dogs on Winamp or something.

Not really my genre, but not terrible either. I know most of these songs and have heard them many times, and they're mostly great for what they are. Four stars.

classic!

Ignoring all the machismo around Metallica (and metal music in general), this is a pretty good thrash album.

Tolles Hard Rock Album. And Justice For All“ sowie der Opener „Blackend“. Gerne mal Wiederhören.

When I’m in the mood for something heavy a Metallica album is something I will normally turn to. I got into Metallica about the time this album was released and certainly when it was topped by the next ‘black’ album. My dalliance with Metallica didn’t last long as it was difficult to find anything really new from one album to another. But I accept that if the formula is right then why change it? That said listening to this album again I realised that I wasn’t as familiar with it as I thought. Some really nice melodic guitar passages which I love and get me every time. But also lots of trademark Metallica chugga chugga riffs which are the bits which become a little monotonous after a while. All in all a solid album which I enjoyed and had me reaching for my air guitar. 4/5 23/12/24

"...And Justice For All" is the fourth studio album by American heavy metal band Metallica. It is the first full length album featuring bassist Jason Newsted following the death of Cliff Burton. The album is known for its aggressive complexity, fast tempos and few verse-chorus structures but on the negative side, also for its dry mix and inaudible bass. Thanks Lars! The lyrics include themes of political and legal injustices, government corruption, censorship and war. The album was acclaimed by music critics for its depth abd complexity but also criticized for the items above. Commercially, it reached #6 in the US and #4 in the UK. A slow incoming space guitar intro begins "Blackened." The drums kick in with a heavy metal guitar riff. This is fast as anything I've heard from them. James Hetfield's throttled vocals are aimed at the environment. Various pace changes and guitar solos and that's for every song going forward. They take the number of pace changes to a ridiculous level in the nearly ten-minute "..And Justice For All." Complex layered guitars and there are signs of a melody in spots. A song about corruption. "Eye of the Beholder" has a chugging guitar intro. Hey, I hear a bass. I love the guitar riff in this song and maybe the song with the best vocal chorus on the album. A song about freedom of speech and civil liberties. The sound of a helicopter begins one of their biggest songs "One." Melodic layered guitars. The song comes to machine-gun sounding guitar and drums which breaks to a guitar solo and then the band goes full throttle. One of their best sounding song parts musically. And if you saw the video, you know it's about a wounded soldier. Their first single was actually "Harvester of Sorrow." Nothing new in this song but that's a great heavy metal-named song. Cliff Burton gets a songwriting credit on the instrumental "To Live is to Die." The band goes on a journey with the pace changes, guitar riffs and solos but I find it a welcome break in the album (without lyrics). This album is hard, dark and yes, complex. I both appreciate the constant tempo changes for the band's effort and, yet, find them exhausting. Hetfield's vocals are loud and focused. I would say his most consistent deep lyrics on any album. A lot of these songs do have melodies that could have been developed. Kirk Hammlet's guitar riff are numerous and pretty much great. Even if I do have a few critiques, I do like this album a lot. I am one of those that feel their first four albums can be interchangeable as far as being the band's favorite. OK, I'll throw "The Black Album" in too. At times, "...And Justice For All" is my favorite. .

If you’re into metal this is certainly a heavy weight album. This isn’t something I ever put on if I am kicking back or just looking for some background music. But it def has a place - during a workout or just to put an edge on.

I'm listening to the REMASTERED version on Spotify (with 10 extra hours of content I won't be bothering with) but even in this version why are the drums so LOUD in the mix! Its so unnecessary. Bro thinks he's Neil Peart or something, no one is looking for Lars' drums in this. I feel how I feel about Metallica in today's day and age but I did really like this album back in the day and while I discovered much better metal since I still have fond memories of finding these albums. A better mix with lower drums would help.

Metalica is very good at what they do.

A flawed masterpiece

Strangely it is a very thematic, coherent album. I was expecting more of a random assortment of Metallica songs, but this was quite nice. I have to say though - James Hetfield's voice gets too much after listening to an entire album of his growling. But One is a masterpiece, and I definitely will give this album a revisit.

I’m be of the last great albums by a great bad before they lost their mojo. This is towards the end of their amazing run of albums in the late 80’s. Love the long songs with long operatic introductions.

If it’s not 6+ minutes is it even a song? Not according to Metallica. At least until they made their radio record that is. There’s two songs on here that clock under six minutes and they’re both over five minutes. It’s not always a bad thing, I’m in no way against long songs. In fact I’ve said in the past that if a song is over 8 minutes it’s probably a good song. The thought is that if a song is that long it’s probably for a good reason and if you’re patient it will probably be rewarding. This is not a set in stone rule. I don’t think any of the 9+ minutes songs on here absolutely needed to be that long, but I don’t think they necessarily suffered from the length either. Some songs on here could definitely have been made better if they trimmed them down a tad. Still there’s some awesome stuff on here, even if you can’t hear the bass in the final mix. Blackened may be my favorite Metallica song, although Creeping Death is up there too. This is definitely the weakest of their big three albums. Puppets is number one, followed by Lightning. That being said, the weakest of those three is better than a lot of bands best. I think this is the last great Metallica album. After the 80s they really went for a more alt rock sound that is not what drew me to them in the first place. So even if some of the songs are too long it’s because they are ambitious, and I applaud them for that. After this one it seems like they were just trying to get on the radio and the music suffered for people like me who love the hard, fast, and complex Metallica of the 80s.

# Playlist track - One # Notes - As someone who listened to A LOT of Metallica MP3's back in Napster, it's a nice experience listening to a full album, instead of loosely collected tracks. - Sidenote: in my personal experience there's an awesome exception to this: `S&M`. Got the album for cheap in some sale close to Christmas time, and I've heard it a billion times. - Also, the only reason I got it it was the price: it cost the same as other albums, but had 2 CDs, so twice the music! Got Deep Purple's live concert in the same haul and I love both! - Back to the main subject: It's Metallica. It's fast, angry, energetic. This teases what Metallica will become later on. A cool experience, but far from being their best work.

It’s definitely been over 25 years since I’ve listened to this album from beginning to end. If I had to choose, this would probably be my favorite Metallica album of them all.

Metallica rocks. But why three Metallica albums? Are you telling me there aren’t other metal artists that deserve the list. Where’s the justice…for all.

Great stuff

Thrash metal. This is a tough one. It sounds a little “thin” and some (most) of the songs are overlong. But for every clunker there’s a classic right behind it. I think I would objectively give this a 3 but an extra bonus point for nostalgia.

25/11/24 The album was alright, it's not one of their better ones though and does get a bit samey.

Haven’t listened to this in 30 years. This will be an interesting listen.

Solid trash metal album, lots of classic sounds plus a glimpse of the future changes Metallica would go through in the 90s. Not a perfect album, though.

Classic Metallica album

One is just amazing. The rest is good and a prototype of what came next.

I never have been super into Metallica. However, I did have a brief stint of listening to their bigger hits by the time I was in high school and super into playing guitar. AJFA is solid. Their ability to run with a single melody that weaves in and out of a single song is an absolute masterclass. I know that the genre 'Thrash Metal' might turn people off, but sitting down and just listening to the intricacies of their music shows that they are operating at such a high level. its not loud just to be loud, its not fast just to be fast. these are extremely talent technical musicians who are producing high quality music. Also, listening to 'One' just brought me back to my Guitar Hero 3 days... oh nostalgia you tantalizing drug.

Metallica being Metallica. I was working out while listening to this so it really hit the spot. A bit of variety sprinkled throughout the album, but in general the raw ROCK sound is phenomenal. The only reason I’m not giving 5 is because it may be a bit too “full-on” for me. I like melodic singing, and this has very little of it.

WHERES THE BASS??

Wish they had Ride the Lightning instead. Still really good Will I listen to again: 100%

Back in the day when you had a song as your ringtone my husband had ...And Justice for All. Now phones are mostly (and should be!!) on silent, but its pretty funny to remember that 20 years ago we all had our favourite songs as ringtones! ...And Justice for all is burned into my memory from that time in my life! It's not their best album, but One is undeniably a great track and I mostly enjoyed the listen through the full album, overall it's a bit too stark and tight for me. I took this opportunity to try out the Spotify music videos option for One - I hadn't seen it in years, so good! Probably a 3-3.5, but I'm feeling generous "I don't know whether I'm alive and dreaming, or dead and remembering"

They’re great at what they do! 4

This is Metallica's proggiest and most complex album. It is also the one with that muddy mix where you have to squint your ears to tell what's going on. That's not too big an issue to knock it down completely, though. It also features the song "One", which earned to band their first Grammy award and pointed them into their more streamlined and mainstream direction. Key tracks: Blackened ...And Justice for All One

it is good

Awesome album - goes to 4 for the bass being turned way down!!!! Justice for Jason

A real throwback for an 80s rocker!

Sooooo good! Reminds me of my childhood.

Production is mad - even on the remastered version. Drier than a nun’s proverbial. One is arguably the greatest metal song ever written and The Shortest Straw and Harvester of Sorrow both slap. Do think the album as a whole drags on a little bit. Metallica are well harder and stronger than Megadeth.

Excellent metal album with some of their best work but massively let down by truly awful production and band members being weirdos cause their mate died. Standout tracks - Blackened - One - Harvester of Sorrow - The Frayed Ends of Sanity Don't rate Eye of the Beholder but that's mainly down to the odd filter effect on Hetfield's vocals. Would have been 3.5 stars but not allowed so will be nice and give it a 4

Very fun album, and definitely best listened to in album form. I have a lot of appreciation for it, though it's not my go-to music.

wasn’t in the mood for heavy metal but what I did listen to was good

Man o man.... this had been the 2nd Metallica album I've got from this list and probably detrimental as a result. Some really technical song sin this album, but the production is pretty awful..no bass, tin can vocals in some songs. Eye of the Beholder was a promising song but jist fell flat due to dodgy production, Herfield slumded under water. The story behind this album is very interesting though Obviously One is the standout here and massively influential in metal from here on, great track. I also really loved Harvester of Sorrow. Shame I'm having to rate this middle of the road due to the production, otherwise it's a 4 That being said the end of the album really pulled this all together and I'm retracting my statement. It's gets really awesome. 4 To live is to die is also beautiful.

Metallica could do no wrong up to this album, which is still a classic, but loses a lot of the thrash edge and lets the self-indulgence creep in just a bit.

Favourites- And justice for all, One, harvester of sorrow

Talented, but not my fav

This was really good. My highlight is "To Live Is To Die".

I liked it. Brought out a side of me I didn’t know existed.

A bit repetitive… but still fire. Favorite track: Blackened

I think that I just have to be in a certain mood to listen to Metallica. I am impressed by their ability to play metal and slow when they want and sound good at both. They are beginning to grow on me and if this genre have become the one metal band that I enjoy.

I know this is a long album and has some long songs on here but I'm here for it. Metallica is one of the few bands that I don't mind having 8, 9 minute songs on an album. A whole lotta other bands just sound pretentious and "artsy" when they do that but I think Metallica sounds great. The lyrics for this album are tough, hit you in the mouth, all about justice and how it is twisted in our world. Love that that's the focus and not just something shallow and dumb or super self focused like a lot of metal bands do. Also Lars Ulrich on the drums is always a treat to listen to and James Hetfield is just phenomenal on the rhythm guitar. Just lights out. Superb.

where’s the stinking BASS but still 4/5 stars.

This does not hold up well, but Metallica has a special place in my heart. Although the songs are outdated and are too long, they did have a significant influence in heavy metal music.

one is such a great song, love it for 15 years and counting... definitely their weakest from the ones i've got so far, but still good. someone said they're good at hyping crowds and not too good to listen to alone and i kinda agree, not the kind of stuff i would listen randomly on my own (except for a few outliers) but yeah great music!

I was looking forward to this one, a great and important album from back then, but oh it surely hit different when I was 15. A bit like the Justice For All t-shirt I proudly wore then vs, now, the Justice For All sweater I spontaneously bought at H&M last year or so. It's for in the house only, paired with joggers.

Where Queen is prog with less chops, Metallica is prog metal with less chops. Its not bad, but it is just a bit pretentious at length.

im a big classic rock fan so i love metallica. this is the first album of theirs i listened to all the way through. i loved the guitar specifically it was so amazing to hear them shred.

Overall good songs with exceptional ones mixed in. My only let down was how ever song sounds SO similar. I couldn't tell if I was still on my first play through or it had looped back to the beginning.

You can’t kill the metal.

Shreds so hard

Two issues with this album. Everything else is flawless. One, production is a tad shoddy. Not the worst Metallica has ever done, but certainly not the best. Two, the ratio of instrumentation to vocals sways way higher to the instruments. Probably the highest out of any of their major five. I can still rock out to the heavy metal of it all, but without vocals or some sort of solo to focus on, it feels like a backing track. The instrumentation itself is fantastic. Vocals are great when they’re there. Lyrics and writing are some of the best the band has ever achieved. A fantastic album, but not my personal favorite from them. 4/5

epicarmen

Good album by Metallica, has no bass so it has kind of a tinny sound.

These are some of the best metal compositions ever but the lack of bass keeps the album from being truly great.
