Reviews (page 2 of 13)

This album has its well known gems, "Cry Baby" being perhaps my favorite Joplin song. But there are also some under-appreciated recordings which were new to me, including the Isaac Hayes-inflected production on "Half Moon," the slow build-up of "A Woman Left Lonely," and the poignantly instrumental "Buried Alive Blues". Aside from the latter, the thing which unites the entire album is, of course, Joplin's devastatingly powerful performances.

Man, what a voice. I believe this album could've been fully a capella and I would still give it a high rating (sadly that wasn’t possible with her passing) Her voice is that powerful.

One of the few so far that indisputably is a top 1001.

An SF blues classic.

Great voice with so much character. The song writing was fun and thoughtful.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. Will be checking out more of her stuff. 5/5

a very special lady

Desgarrador.

Fantastic songs, great pacing, good mix of seriousness and humor, and only 34 minutes. 5.0/5.0: Iconic

incredible talent

Just when I was wondering if I should've rated Big Brother and the Holding Company higher (lost marks from the cringey fake live production), along comes this crisp clean fresh explosion of energy and emotion.

A classic talent even if her voice is grating as hell. When she's soulful, there's nobody who hits the bluesy tones of rock like she does. An amazing album. And yet Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish are the ones selling out stadiums. Go figure.

Raw intensity like no one since! A true classic that is so worthy of the list!

soo good. 8/10

Never really listened to Janis Joplin outside of a couple of tracks, but this was great.

Impecable.

First time listen, very impressed. Will be listening again.

Electric, love her voice.

I’ve had Me and Bobby McGee stuck in my head for the last 24 hours

Yes Yes Yes Yes! This was an amazing listen.

Me encantó. Estaba obsesionada con ella a los 15 años

Lovely

Unlike most of her posthumous releases, this one is not a closet cleaning, in fact was already in the can at the time of her untimely demise in late 1970. This shows her very comfortable and working well with her new(ish) band, Full Tilt Boogie. Nine absolutely great soulful performances, and the irritating (to me at least) “Mercedes Benz”. A true classic despite that one.

Alot better than I thought. I finally get the appeal.

OBSESSED!!!! What a talent

very good

What a voice ! Wow. Amazing instrumental elements.

One of my favorite records of all time. Janis’ vocals are front and center throughout. It is a soulful album featuring a few of my favorite Janis tracks including Cry Baby and Bobby McGee.

1st time I have ever heard this album and its so good and an easy 5 stars

Banger.

Superb and sublime rock and roll performed with great expression. Loved this. Must-listen #326

best new listen so far from this

Excelente

Classic album by one of rock and roll's finest singers. I remember watching Jane appear and perform in the late 1960's and early 1970's on Dick Cavett. She was amazing.

Easily 5 stars but what is mercedes benz doing here?

it good

What is there to say it janis joplin doing what made her one of the most reconiazable voices.

I loved this.

Perfect in every way, no notes

Muy bueno me encantó

Better than Coldplay

A classic. Different. Unlike anyone else.

When I was a kid I had this record from my dad and fell in love with her big broken voice. Janis was like the only female artist my father had any records of, so for the vast majority of my youth, she was the queen of rock n roll. I found out she used to drink Southern Comfort, and that became my shot of choice at the pub for a few years, and I've been known to buy a bottle every now and then. But the album... Well it's a 5 before I start, but from big voiced songs like Cry Baby and Trust Me to the softer Kristofferson cover, Bobby McGee and the acapella Mercedes Benz (both in common rotation as lullabies for my girls) this album don't miss! Standout track is Mercedes Benz, recorded three days before her death, meaning her joyous cackle at the end of the song is the last thing she ever said to us. Man, I wish the memories I had of the records my dad shared with me were the memories I had of my dad. Like I wish we shared these songs, listened to music and talked for hours about what we heard. I learned about my dad through the records he gave me but he never took the time to learn about me. Ah well... RIPs Janice

i'm glad janis died before this website was created

Not every song is a 5, but this album bops

Weltklasse.

70’s Blues ⭐️ A Woman Left Lonely

Classic and timeless.

Very good 👍

Oh hell yeah!! I have really come to love Janice, man. Her voice is unreal!! So full of soul and emotion! Fuckin love it. Yep this album was fire all the way through. RIP Janice and thank you for pouring your heart and soul to us through your music.

Favorite Tracks (Updated): More Over Get It While You Can Cry Baby No skip.

Janis is such a powerful singer. I can never get enough of her voice, and this era of blue eye soul is my exact kind of vibe. I love this album so much.

club of 27!

I think this has to be 5 stars, so classic album. Better production value than her other album on the list, every track is classic. Major talent gone too soon.

This is fantastic. I do wish Cry Baby had not been used endlessly for a perfume advert but I'm managing to get past that. All tracks are excellent and it's not too long! More please

I have a Woodstock poster on my wall, with Janis Joplin’s name written in the billing for Sat. Aug 18. I’m familiar with that performance, but nothing else of hers. Regardless of whether your opinion of this album is coloured by the untimely death of Joplin, I think most would agree that this is great - a great sound, fantastically unique vocals, and stellar songwriting.

Another classic album, containing, imo, the very best version of Bobby McGee recorded

Love love love

Shit, why have I never really listened to Janis Joplin before? I've always liked her hits, and this album's a banger!

She was a great rock singer, no doubt about it.

Hendes stemme er så cool. Vildt fedt album

I had my doubts going in, but Janis blew me away. She has a versatile voice and knows how to use it. The instrumentals were fine too and provided a nice backdrop for her voice to fill.

Love it and listen through many times

Glorious. Never listened to a Janis album in full and it was superb. Her voice is incredible. A fun, witty album to throw on any time of day.

3/9/26 - Listened during "work". I really enjoyed it and some of the songs I did not realize were Janis Joplin. Specifically Cry Baby and Move Over. This is a classic that I would totally listen to again. Full Monty! Top Song - Cry Baby

1. The best voice 2. The absolute, unbridled commitment to each song to be all gas, no brakes 3. top-5 singer's name 4. legend. What an album.

Increíble voz 10/10 aunque hubieron algunos temas que no me gustaron

I love Janis and I love this.

My favorite Janis album

After death release, Sensational singing Move over Cry baby Me and bobby mcgee

Fun listening with my brother, Robert!

Like a supernova

(7/7) never listened to this before. awesome stuff. not a dull moment

Wow talent, gone too soon Favs: “Move Over,” “Cry Baby,” and “Mercedes Benz”

This was fire.

have listened to her in the past, hit the popular ones.

So raw, funny, powerful and beautiful. More please.

Me and bobby mcgee ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

556/1001 MASTERPIECE! 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

Obsessed with Janis Joplin - new addition to the currents!

Rocking, powerful, what's not to love

What you are meets what you want and you both die.

Just wow! This record shows the true talent & amazing singer & arranger Janis was! She was hands on everything. Nothing got done without her approval. The confidence & her range & emotion on every track shows the powerhouse she truly was.

A surprise 5 for me. I've only heard a small sample of Joplin, and this is really not my era or genre of music. I was shocked with how much passion and soul there is here. Will definitely revisit and explore her other music.

Such a fantastic artist with unmatched vocals. I prefer Them ‘ol Cosmic Blues to this album but that’s just me maybe. Regardless, this is a flawless album.

wholesome

cannot believe how great this was

This was wonderful. Janis Joplin has always kind of existed in the background for me -- a sad, tragic heroine of the hippie era whose music was ubiquitous but never really worth listening to; she was part of someone else's generational experience, certainly not mine. Actually listening to her now ... not only is she incredible, but her backing band is awesome. I was expecting to be bored and I was ... not that.

A 5. Top!

I loved this album. Janis Joplin is one of those names people talk about and speak highly of, but I never took the time to listen. This album was amazing and her voice is omg. It has such a soulful quality to it but it’s also got such a unique sound and some slight rasp and it sounds good when she’s belting or singing softly. This album has some elements of rock and blues and it works well with her voice. Such a beautiful album!

hey man. what the fuck.

I could listen to Janis all day long

Really good, I enjoyed this more than the Big Brother album that came up for us recently. 5 stars

I'm pretty picky about singers' voices. I shouldn't like Janis Joplin's voice, but there is no other voice that could fit this music as well as hers did. Tobacco and Whisky-drenched rasp. This album is peak Janis Joplin. The band is on fire. If you like blues rock, it would be hard not to love this album. 5 stars.

Raspy voice with excellent control accompanied by a band that can absolutely drop the funk. The dynamics are stellar flexing between crescendos. Truly a delight.

Love this album! One of the first records i bought. It’s been like 10+ years since I’ve listened to it all the way through 🥲

Divertido

Everything about this album is perfect.

Two notes at once. What the actual fuck. Turns out Janis Joplin is indeed a monster singer, and the music behind her is freaking rad to boot. Lots of fives lately, but I'm not complaining. What a masterful album.

God damn

didn’t dislike any of these songs as expectedddd

What an album, no notes, perfect as is

Loved hearing, sitting in the kitchen eating breakfast with my daughters, not at all what I associate with Janis Joplin. Loved

Great!

One of those albums where you wonder how anyone in the world dislikes it. The band and her voice are perfectly calibrated. The sound is so warm that you feel like you are right there. She's one of those performers like Paul Simon or Joni Mitchell where you can tease out a subject to any given song, but mostly all the songs are just what it's like to be inside this particular person's head. Or more like heart for Janis. As with the Jimi albums, I just wish there was more.

She is absolutely brilliant.

Wow. I’ve never listened to her before, apart from one live album that didn’t really grab me. Tonight, listening to this, I felt incredibly sad that she died so young. Incredible record. “Mercedes Benz” really twists the “she was taken from the world too soon” knife in the chest that “Me and Bobby McGee” planted so firmly, but the rest of the songs shine, too.

Ya lo habia escuchado pero Janis Joplin siempre tendra un lugarcito en mi corazon - which has been torn apart by her beautiful, heartbreaking vocals- mi corazon termina mallugado despues de escucharla cantar, un abrazo a donde estes Janis <3

Other than "Bobby Mcgee" I had only ever heard Janis with Big Brother and the Holding Company but man this did not disappoint. There's so much passion in her voice, I love listening to her sing.

Fantastic

Never listened to Janis before…but I love Ian Gillan and she reminded me of him! Sensational range, emotion, energy. Love this.

NO ONE sings like Janis.

Best album yet, love Janis and the song Crybaby is one of my favs. Would absolutely buy this on vinyl

The cover says it all. Joyful flamboyance with a smoldering cigarette in the center. Burned out too quickly.

#235/1001. I had Big Brother & co at #31, didn't give it too rave reviews, but said that I'll wait for Pearl. And here it is. This album makes me want to step in to a time machine, tune in, turn on and drop out and move to Haight and Ashbury, get high, find some lovin and cosmically groove eternally to the bongos and finish the day with a religious celebration ritual of listening to this album (which did come 4 years after the summer of love, but since I have a time machine I can pick it along). But then I read Joan Didion's article "Slouching Towards Bethlehem" on the Haight-Ashbury in the September 1967 issue of The Saturday Evening Post and it made me rethink, especially about what happened to Susan, then 5 years, whose mom had been giving her Peyote and acid for a year. So I'll stick with my normal life, thanks.

Amazing

This is not my favorite type of music, but you cannot deny Pearl's greatness--or the impact of Janis Joplin. I appreciate the authenticity of this. This feels real and gritty compared to today's artifice. Songs are iconic. It is hard to listen to Janis without feeling sad and wondering what things would have been like if she didn't die so young. Alas.

Such a unique voice and talent. This album felt like an invitation to feel any and everything.

Janis was a legend. She had such raw emotion, passion, and power in her voice. The material on this album is great and elevated highly by not just Joplin, but also her backing band, The Full Tilt Boogie Band. Imagine being a band so good, that you get an instrumental in the middle of a Janis Joplin album. Apparently, Buried Alive In the Blues was originally meant to have vocals, but Janis died before they could be added. Her death was tragic, taking her away when she had so much more amazing music to give to the world, but what she gave us was still amazing. 5/5

Amazing strong album!! Glad I finally listened to it in its entirety. The only album on here so far that left me wanting more when it ended. Beautiful voice and lovely guitar work.

The world was not ready for such a baddie I don't know if I love more music or women but god do I love her This shit might change me forever

Brought me back to my college days once again. I always thought of this as more of a collection of tracks in an actual album since she had passed before the album was released. But still a stone-cold classic. Every track. Wonderful.

Gospel-esque album with extremely strong vocal performance from Joplin. Perfect for a sing-a-long while road-tripping or getting the entire bar to join in chanting the chorus of "Cry Baby".

Unbeatable.

24/12/2025 *1. move over - nice drums at the start. guitar and vocals together are great!!! bass and pianos just started... great!!! oooohh one minute in and it is sooooo good. the bassline is immense! guitar solo great as well. her voice is incredible. very bluesy and groovy... <3 2. cry baby - who doesn't know this song already???? phenomenal voice..... the organ in the back is really nice. such a powerful song!!! loving the way it's building towards the end. wow...... *3. a woman left lonely - loving the switch from louder song to quieter now.... lyrics are reallll nice, voice impeccable as always :) organ in the back giving a gospel feel, as well as how powerful and soulful her voice is. *4. half moon - loving it immediately. going from a metal album yesterday when i couldn't hear the bass to this is heavenly.... funky bassline save me..... gospel and blues rock save me.... guitar solo, going to explode this is sooooo goooood. janis joplin's voice is literally angelic. 5. buried alive in the blues - loving the groooooove of these songs. fuzzy guitar!!!!! oooooo. the piano in this is sosososo good. wasn't expecting an instrumental track, but this is fantastic!! great ending. 6. my baby - more psychadelic vibes from the intro.... don't know why... her singing is just incredible....... nothing more to add than what i've said already. this is ecstatic. 7. me and my bobby mcgee - know this already from rw fassbinder's berlin alexanderplatz (fav movie/tv show <33 also has kraftwerk and leonard cohen. peak soundtrack). more country-ish... sooo grooovy. god her voice is incredible. 8. mercedes benz - acapella. really shows how raspy her voice is, but also how powerful it is that it can stand completely on it's own. everybody and noone answers.... that's it at the end.... so good. 9. trust me - all the instruments work so well together.... all of them stand out, but none overpower each other. such a powerful, growly voice!!!! 10. get it while you can - album hasn't felt slow or sluggish at all! don't want it to end! real great album! loved every song :) loving the bluesy/country/gospel/rock sound, very groovy songs. most of the albums i've been getting so far have been really great and this is no exception, been meaning to listen to janis joplin but not gotten around to it, feel very bad for putting it off now. will def give another relisten soon :)

Her voice stops me in my tracks. So powerful. No one like her and the songs kick ass. I didn't expect to love this as much as I did.

Fantastic Album. "Me and Bobby McGee" is the classic off the album, but "Move Over", "Cry Baby", and "Trust Me" are great tracks as well. great album from beginning to end.

This is exceptional and sounded great. The instrumental treatment is superb. Janis is just the absolute best female rock and blues singer. There are classic tracks, tracks that sound better every time you listen. Grabs your heart and does everything music should. A 6

Absolute bop. Soulful, fun, of social and political import.

Amazing, raw and unexpected

Co tu dużo mówić, rozpierdol absolutny.

This is one of my favorite albums ever and I didn't know how much I've missed it

8/10 Very good - such an incredible voice. If a couple of the cover choices were stronger then this would be a solid 5 stars

Long possessed, even longer loved album. Every song is a unique classic and brought to a new level by her amazing voice. Blues and soul perfectly combined in a heartfelt album of utter joyfulness.

Have heard this woman's name a lot before and she really delivered, banger after banger, listened to the album twice and then went on to the rest of her work.

4th album with group. Good Songs - Move Over, Cry Baby, A Woman Left Lonely, Half Moon, Buried Alive in the Blues, My Baby, Me and Bobby McGee, Mercedes Benz, Trust Me, and Get It While You Can. Bad Songs - Nothing. It’s a shame how some people would insult her for her appearance even though she’s an amazing musician.

Janis has a fantastic voice and she sings brilliantly. Maybe what's most overlooked is the very high quality of the band.

God I love Joplin.

Will listen to this album many many more times

Holy hell, can she wail. She's got pipes for weeks. Yass queen. The front and foremost presence here is that stellar voice and there's no forgetting it. Vocals sounding like a brandy on the rocks. And this rocks.

“Pearl” is Janis Joplin's posthumously released final album and a deeply moving masterpiece. That expressive voice—and the singer who uses it uninhibitedly to make every song unique! The tasteful arrangements and the great work of the Full Tilt Boogie Band fade completely into the background. I had only sporadically explored Janis Joplin's work before and really enjoyed this album.

What an amazing voice!

Love Janis. This album makes me think of my mom so it is usually a good one.

Classic

Excellent.

Great Songs: Cry Baby, A Woman Left Lonely, My Baby, Me and Bobby McGee, Trust Me, Get It While You Can Good Songs: Move Over, Half Moon, Buried Alive in the Blues, Mercedes Benz Mid Songs: Bad Songs:

Fantastic voice, and what a great album. Sad that it is her last one. Could listen to this all day.

Perfect performance and production. Great separation where you can hear each instrument but it all combines perfectly. Not a skip on this record.

Fantastic album. I love it from beginning to end and only wish it were longer.

You couldn’t make an album more suited to my taste than this. Bluesy riffs, plonky keys, RAW SEXUALITY. The songwriting isn’t elite. Janis’ soul is elite. On some songs it feels like you can hear the scarring in her throat, but I like it.

I guess I’ve only heard Janis’s folk stuff - this rocked way more than I expected.

Obviously "Me and Bobby McGee," "Move Over," and "Mercedes Benz" are classics, but I also particularly enjoyed "Half Moon" and "Buried Alive in the Blues."

Janis is always great. Much more refined than her earlier releases.

banger

"Move Over" je fakin hud začetk albuma. (Glih včer sm pomislila, da že sedmič zapored poslušam moške. Skrajn cajt. In kdo boljši, da prebije the sausage fest k Janis? Tko da, prek bluetooth it is.) "Cry Baby" je amazing. "A Woman Left Lonely" je mal bl chill, fak, sam Janis gives it her all. "Half Moon" picka up the tempo. Klavir mi je kul kle. "Buried Alive In the Blues" je instrumentalen, ker ni uspela posnet vokalov. "My Baby" je spet kul komad, ampak "Me and Bobby McGee" je pa amazing. Sam njen sfukan, ampak lep glas. "Trust Me" je v bistvu prou lep. "Get It While You Can" indeed. Kr mal upsetting.

increible

Yeah fuck yeah dude. Great stuff mang

Fuckin love janis

Bangers!

This one caught me off guard. I've definitely heard Janis Joplin's name before but I didn't know anything about her or her music. This is an easy, enthusiastic 5 stars for me. I think she has a great, distinctive voice and just thoroughly enjoyed almost all of these songs. I might be biased because I really like the genre but I was just really impressed.

What an amazing voice!

There are some serious bangers on here. Great album.

Album #940 With a face like that, you know the music is going to be good. Me and Bobby McGee is one of my favorite songs of all time. The way she sings it, you'd think this was a real person and story she lived through, but she didn't even write the song. Kris Kristofferson did. Everything else is solid soulful blues rock. I can't think of a good reason not to give this one a 5/5.

Legendary album.

Dreamt about the song “cry baby”

i love Janis!!

Over the years, I always recognized Janis Joplins imprint on American Music. She had a unique voice and soul and from what I can tell, a general type of way about her that was no less than “cool as fuck.” Previously I had only listened to Cheap Thrills by BB & THC like once or twice, and Janis’ “I Got Dem Ol’ Kozmic Blues…” like once or twice and never really paid the rest too much attention. Upon hearing Pearl for the first time in my life, Janis Joplin has my attention. Something finally clicked. Now, I am knee deep in J-Jops. I will be learning a cover of Mercedes Benz, post haste!

She's so good

she was gone wayyy to soon. love this album

I don’t know what else to give this except 5. Joplin probably has the best voice of anyone with clear vocal damage

Oh Lord won't you buy me a Mercedes Benz. I wish I had a dollar for every time I got drunk and sang that one. Janis was a star that unfortunately was doomed to burn out not fade away. She's a fantastic blue's singer, wonderful record

I’m always down to listen to some Janis Joplin.

Love this album 8.5/10 5/5 favs being: me and bobby mcgee (duh) and cry baby

Beautiful album. Had always lind of liked it but today I sat down and really enjoyed the whole album as a whole

It's hard to find problems with this album, it was a great listen on my morning commute. Favorite track: maybe "Move Over," but will take some more listening to decide.

Okay I’m back on for the final year. And man what an album to start with. Idk that I’ve listened to a lot of Janice before now so I forgot just how hard it hits. Her voice in cry baby is so intense! I think I loved every moment of this album.

It's really really good

I can’t get enough of Janis.

I'm a big fan. In the world of rock and roll, uniqueness is key. There is so much material that is derivative, it's unusual to come across something that's so distinct. Janis was one of a kind.

Gods, this is wonderful. Ten stars.

5/5 - It’s hard to imagine this list without one of the most iconic voices in rock history on it. Janis was a total powerhouse. I love this album. You need to hear it, because you can’t begin to tell the story of women in rock without Janis Joplin.

Fun album. Talented singer but sometimes it felt like she was doing too much. The band is incredible. I kinda wish the band continued making music.

This album is... Well, it's Janis Joplin, what can go wrong? It's great! What else can be said? This album is fantastic, from beginning to end.

bello bello

Classic voice

An iconic voice range and diverse collection of songs. To my mind, just Awesome.

The cry at the start of Cry Baby… Janis Joplin, the one and only, 5 of 5 stars

Amazing record. Raw, pure, and powerful. One of the most stunning blues singer ever

Fantastic album by a legend.

Crazy good? I feel like I was missing a piece of music history and I didn't even know it. Makes a lot of contemporaries feel trite.

One of my favorites. I own a first pressing of this album.

this is just incredible?! what a voice! fave song: a woman left lonely ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

One of the great voices of Rock music. A perfect album.

Rocking country blues. The band elvis should have had.

It's all about the voice

5 estrelas

my 3rd female artist so far and also my 3rd 5 star rating :)

Janis was so, so good.

You dropped this queen 👑

This is a pearl. That voice is phenomenal and every song is blastingly brilliant. And every one just makes me wanna sing.

unbelievable that this is her second and final album! I like to daydream about what would have been had we more Janis Joplin to enjoy. This was just perfect.

badass

Not really sure what to say that hasn't already been said. A legendary voice that we lost too soon. I'd never really listened to her full albums before, so I'm glad this is in the world to experience!

Janis Joplin, _Pearl_ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Damn I thought I'd heard all of her stuff. Dang if she doesn't sing a whole helluva lot about wanting someone. But the stuff is incredible, just line after line of brilliance. Kept wanting to say "she's just doing whitegirl take on R&B" but no, this is no Pat Boone Wrecks Black People's Music album. It's just soulful. The Adele of her time.

For some reason, I've always had a bit of an issue with Joplin's vocal delivery - quite screechy at times, and a bit OTT. So I came to this record expecting more of the same unfair opinion from me. But this is a remarkable album. Gorgeous production, fantastic songs, and Joplin is as charismatic as you like. Favourite tracks: Move Over, Cry Baby, A Woman Left Lonley, Half Moon (sick riff), Buried Alive In the Blues, Get It While You Can.

I mean, I knew Janis Joplin was a great singer, but I'd never taken the time to really immerse myself, and she's just incredible. Great backing band, very tight, but the focus is her heart-rending, blues-filled performances. Just great track after great track, there's a reason why she's a legend.

FIRE!!!! I loved this one, which is kinda funny considering I was not a fan when I first listened a few years ago. I remember thinking it was a bit one-note, but guess what? I was wrong. So very wrong. Taking nothing else into account, Janis' vocals alone are enough to carry the album. She's the epitome of a once-in-a-generation talent. Then, when you consider the strong production and soul infused deep within each song, this album becomes otherworldly. I think I could listen to this album forever. Somehow, the rasp and harshness of Janis' voice don't prevent the warm, inviting qualities from flourishing as well. She was a singular talent, and every song on this album is a testament to that.

When this album popped up from the generator this morning I was not excited at all. I'd previously listened to "Cheap Thrills" and didn't enjoy it at all. I remember this album being played at lots of hang outs with friends back in the 70's, but I really never paid much attention to it. Or so I thought. Right off the bat, I recognized the first two songs and totally loved them. And then it slowed down with "A Woman Left Lonely" and I was all in. There are a couple of filler tracks, but they didn't take the smile off of my face that I had from the start of the record till the end. I am shocked, and very pleasantly surprised. I kept thinking that I can't possibly give this five stars, but I can't deny how much I enjoyed this album. It's getting that five.

Love it. Own it

Excellent

Cry Baby, Me and Bobby McGee, Move Over - Classics. Great Rock artist with a raspy and soulful voice.

Janis joplin is crunchy peanut butter in a land of smooth. Creo baby and half morning were both favoritos and showed her range. Unexpected fun

My father owned this gem, so I listened to it often at a very young age. Of course, I couldn't understand the lyrics at that time, but the energy of her voice impressed me. While the music isn't anything I normally listen to, it's simply amazing. And my favourite happens to be the last song she recorded just days before her death: Mercedes Benz.

Phenomenal

Loved it and will listen again.

An album I enjoyed out of the week.

Great album, the music is great and funky and Janis’s voice is one of a kind.

The first fierce rocker chick paving the way for generations to follow.

Janis Joplin had such a unique, electrifying voice, so glad to have gotten this album today. Some absolute classics in here. Easy 5/5 stars.

Slaps harder than I expected! Really enjoyed this one - very unique vocal work and style!

it's never not a good day for a janis album

Another reminder of what a loss the world suffered when Janis died too young. Her voice shines brightly on this album, which already features some great blues rock. Of particular note are her performances on Half Moon, Mercedes Benz, and the standout Me and Bobby McGee. Beautiful voice with some soulful rock.

A flawless blues rock album. Janis Joplin's vocals are vibrant and perfect.

I absolutely love Cry Baby, the volume and vocal range is incredible and I loved her voice. I feel like A Woman Left Lonely is just a big contrast to Cry Baby in the way it sounds because it’s just a lot softer and not so many vocal changes. I love the instrumental sound in Half Moon.

Janis and this album is superb work of art. Recommend on every level.

Faboulous. Great songs, great voice, and a Hammond Organ.....

Blues but different blues

A 1001 Albums Generator discovery for me. Wow, this has totally blown me away. 33 minutes of utter brilliance by Janis here. I had never heard this in full, but this was totally brilliant. Normally I wouldn't be able to listen to Janis Joplin for longer periods of time, but this album made me change my mind. After about 6 listens this has now become part of my DNA.

Damn that’s groovy

Solid blues rock album with strong vocals. Lots of emotion in Joplin's voice. This is probably the best blues rock album I have ever heard.

I have not been a fan of Janis Joplin. I will admit I listened to and was influenced by other people's opinions. But I listened to this with an open mind and was surprised by how much I liked it. Janis you have a new fan.

One of the most tragic 27 Club losses there is, cause after listening to this, I've no doubt that she'd blows loads more peoples' minds. Solid 5 Stars.

I’m at a 5. I never quite hit the same “fever pitch” status like I did whenever we got “Cheap Thrills” last year, but I feel like I got pretty damn close a few times. This is a more polished version of Janis Joplin, tapping a little more into her Aretha-adjacent bag while still keeping her blues-rock sensibilities intact, with just a bit of a country twang. Lyrically, this is pretty damn strong; straight-forward to understand (or at least feel emotionally), and Janis performs them brilliantly. Vocally, she’s still as stunning as she was, and I can’t imagine there’s any real complaints a person could have about her vocals here. If you think her grittier moments sound too much like Marge Simpson or something, I guess that’s fair, but I personally love how the grit in her vibrato comes across. I especially want to point at “Cry Baby” – the knockout track of the album for me, for sure, though they’ve all got great moments. The variety on this is strong enough that any track might be someone’s favorite. Instrumentally, I feel like the more “polished” style works really well (literally no complaints other than “I really, REALLY wish there was a brass section in this album”), but it does lose part of the chaotic appeal that made Janis Joplin feel like the eye of the storm like she did with Big Brother & The Holding Company. This album never gets THAT crazy, so it does feel like she’s sort of overshadowing everything else with her vocals just a bit, but that’s more so on her backing band not matching her energy in quite the same way Big Brother did (or maybe, her matching their slightly lower energy?). They’re still really good throughout the 34 minutes here though (literally just listen to “Buried Alive in the Blues” or “My Baby”, they could go that hard if they wanted), so it’s basically like complaining about a pizza with a little less pepperoni than the other; not a huge difference, but noticeable enough if you really care. Overall, this is a pretty easy 5. There’s not a single miss here, and while it didn’t quite get to the same heights as “Cheap Thrills” for me, it’s still a highly recommended album regardless. You can’t possibly listen to this and hate it unless you’re actively trying to, and if you are actively trying to, you’re kinda just lame, I think. I can only say “damn” that Janis Joplin left the world far, far too soon. She would’ve killed the rest of the 70s, I’m sure of it.

Brutal.

Fabulous, Fantastic, powerful

Exceptionally raw and powerful performance from Janis and the Full Tilt Boogie Band. Janis's vocals are the clear highlight, and for good reason.. there truly was no one else alive who could deliver that specific type of grit in such a thunderous way. RIP... gone way too soon. The Full Tilt Boogie Band are no slouches either, all incredible musicians who get their chance to shine as a comprehensive, cohesive musical unit throughout the album.

Maybe not the best JJs album but then I don't know which one is the best

Decent album. Liked Half Moon, Buried Alive In the Blues and Mercedes Benz.

Classic Janis.

What a voice! Contains some of my favourite Janis Joplin tracks such as "Move Over" and "Mercedes Benz", plus her hits "Cry Baby" and "Me and Bobby McGee".

I love Janis. I could listen to her wail like a banshee to the background of blues music for hours on end (Zena has previously complained about that actually happening). I enjoyed this so much, I’d like to officially change my ratings of Nirvana and Derek & the Dominoes (Layla is a bit overrated in my opinion) to four stars. This is the new five star standard.

Bloody cracking. Gets a 5 simply for the Mercedes Benz song. Will definitely be listening to this again. I hadn’t previously listened to anything by Joplin but this really was a delight

I've never listened to this album before and I didn't think I would give a 5 to anything on first listen but it's just brilliant. I feel like every other female rock singer before and after is trying to sound like this. There's also a kind of whiskey/motorbike coolness to it. Plus she died of heroin overdose making it, so it's only respectful to round it up to 5.

Treasure

Absolute classic. Het singing is so raw and emotional.

Lovely Janis. What to say? She was one of the greatest and in this record you can listen why.

This album was a wonderful surprise. I loved all the songs, and I wish I were around when it came out.

Holy shit, one of the most amazing voices in all music..It is hard to know what her death at 27 denied us, but she will live forever through her music. I've always loved hearing her belt out tune. This was true when I first heard and appreciated her as a teen and it is still true 35 years later. There isn't anything that I can say that hasn't already been said, except thank you. If you cannot feel moved by this voice, you no soul. This is a hill I'm willing to die on.

The Good: We get a Pearl! The Bad: Unlike a diamond, a pearl is very fragile… The Ugly: nothing really… except for the damn hair! What an absolute joy! My wife hated it, as she doesn’t like JJ’s voice… I guess we will have to agree to disagree, because a divorce is really expensive… Though I am uncertain about the exact first time I heard Janis her voice come exploding through some speakers, I believe I had not reached the gentile age of 10 yet. My monther bought the “Greatest Hits” album, and I recall being fascinated by the chopper… go figure. Highlights? Try the entire album… even the Mercedes Benz song, which, depending on my mood, can actually get a little on my nerves… Bobby McGee… best song ever! Off to spin the record again! 5*

Powerhouse

NEED IT. WANT IT. NEED IT. WANT IT. She got it while she could. RIP.

I apologize Janis Joplin, I was not familiar with your game.

Holy hell this woman can sing, had me standing up and everything. Scared me with the first note she sang. Might just damn-well be the most talented blues singer I've ever heard, and this might just damn-well be a 5 star album.

Janis Joplin has my heart. My favorite blues rock out there.

Brilliant! What a crime shame she died so young.

One of the great voices of all time. So brilliant.

Vermächtnis einer großartigen Sängerin!

Good music with a sharp glassy edge

Janis's final gift to the world. Yep I'm in the camp that loves her voice.

Janis Joplin’s vocals are now iconic and how great it must have been to have heard her when she was “new”?? And backing from a terrific band on this record.

It's got that blues, that rock-n-roll, and that so distinctive voice of Janis. This album is so powerful and emotional. It's one of the best of it's time period.

A classic album that I had never really given much Creedence to. First time fully listening through a Janis Joplin album and I really enjoyed it. Not just her voice, but the backing band was extremely impressive and tasteful in how they complimented it. Every track was unique and shared a story. Its bluesy, its loose, its Texas, its San Francisco. Its Janis and I'm here for it. 9/10

Pearl is the second and final solo studio album by Janis Joplin. Unreal voice. Outstanding soul, rock.

Oh my - Janice - gone to soon!

Great!

One of the best albums in rock!

I knew she was popular, was cherished, was missed when she passed. But wow. This is incredible.

Fantastic album loved it.

Now we’re talking! A voice like no other. I was used to Janis Joplin’s more soulful heartbreakers, but I didn’t realise she had such heavy grooves on her albums. This was an utter delight to listen to (I went through it multiple times today) and I’ll be returning to listen to the bonus tracks on the expanded edition soon.

So much heartache behind that singing. No wonder she did not live long.

def fav album so far.iconic, rocky, jazzy, funky

Her voice is phenomenal, that gravel and the way she controls it, can hit notes that seem impossible, a master of blues and gospel. This is a posthumous release, an excellent album that you can replay again and again

I had Adele's 25 album yesterday and today I get Pearl by Janis Joplin. Two very powerful and distinct voices, but unlike Adele, Janis sings with a fervor and a passion that is missing from Adele's album. Janis is on fire with this one. My oldest sister was a huge Janis Joplin fan, so I got to listen to this one a lot when I was young. Such a talent gone too soon.

Janis Joplin is a talent like no other. She’s in her own league. ‘Powerhouse’ feels like an inadequate description of her vocals. There’s a rawness to her emotions when she sings. It’s guttural and primal, and somehow beautiful and expressive at the same time. And this album is a perfect showcase of her power. Oh, and the band is incredible too! The music is a stunning blend of soul, gospel, and hard rock. The songs have a great, live in the studio feel, all fantastically produced. I love that organ too! 🙌

Really incredible album with great performances by everyone involved. After hearing the guitar solo in the first track, "Move Over", I actually re-played it and then started to look up some tabs/sheet music so I could learn it because it's so impressive. Great phrasing, flow, and technicality. "Me and Bobby McGee" is a classic, and possibly Janis Joplin at her best. She somehow has both a huge, soaring, powerful belt, and also a sweet, natural, and friendly voice, and she showcases both on this track. I love it so much. "Get It While You Can" is a great album ender. It's fun, it grooves, it's romantic, and playful. I think Janis Joplin and her band have some of the best buildup / releases in the history of rock music. They are so good at slowly adding layers of tension and not hitting the climax too soon. I think most musicians can learn from them. Loved listening to this, it's a 5/5. What Jimi Hendrix did for guitar, Janis Joplin did for vocals.

It's an imperfect classic; iconic voice with some signature tracks here. Maybe could've benefitted from being finished properly? It is still however a classic.

Top trop bon j’adore
