Reviews (page 3 of 13)
Such a high energy and soulful album. It's such a bummer she died so young. I wonder what would have happened in the Grateful Dead community if she didn't die so young. Makes me wonder if she would have been more involved with the band. She has an amazing voice and you can just tell she has an amazing live presence.
Every time I listen to Janis Joplin I get sad. Her voice, her style, her band was all so good. She was gone too soon. I'm grateful for this record and her work with Big Brother, I just wish she was still with us making killer music. I think what's so good about her style is that its so close to delta blues. Its the natural progression from Muddy Waters, which is the progression from Robert Johnson. Its not that far removed, so she is able to harness that energy and spirit from early blues music and take it in her own direction. I would argue that most blues artists after Janis (and her contemporaries) were appropriating blues rock, they were taking what she and others had done and building on it (which is incredible in its own right!) But it's different. The raw energy in this record. The songs of love, heartache, poverty. Every song cuts to the core, and every song is its own journey. This is a really unique record and one that I can listen to over and over again.
My Rating: 5/5 Torn Vocal Cords of God Janis doesn’t “sing.” She erupts. Every note on Pearl sounds like someone duct-taped her heart and threw her into the booth yelling “Go.”
really good!!
JANIS MY BELOVEDDDDDD!!!!!!<333333 what!!!a!!!voice!!!! not many can do it like her. another favourite artist of mine who was gone too soon unfortunately, though still grateful that she put herself out there and we get to enjoy her absolutely insane vocals.
This woman could really sing! What a voice! raw, edgy, great range and musical as well. Not the kind of music I listen to generally, but respect for what she gave us. Move Over and Me and Bobby McGee iconic of the era.
Klassiker. 5/5
I love this album, her voice belting. classic
I absolutely love this album! Always have and always will.
Very pleasantly surprised
So so so good. Janis is one of my favorite voices. Had to listen to this one three times in a row. 10/10
Her voice is so good and the melodies are so catchy
This one has been in my collection for a long time and gets regular spins. This (along with Cheap Thrills with Big Brother and the Holding Company) is the Joplin album to own in my opinion. Me and Bobby Mc Gee and Cry Baby hit like a sledgehammer and you can just feel that she is putting it all out there. Mercedes Benz is Janis at her cheeky best and the whole album just resonates joy rage and pain. Love it
Now we"re talking! She comes right through the speakers and grabs you.
Hot damn Janis. Where has this album been all my life? Just beltin' it.
I think I'm going 5 on this one. Probably actually more like 4.5 for me. But I'm a sucker for late 60's hippie music. Joplin is the embodiment of that age. Such a vibe.
Grew up listening to this album. Janice is amazing!!
Love this album
A true classic, gone way too soon
Hell yeah. Janis is one of the greatest to ever do it. Some have the voice, some have the soul, but only rarely does someone have so much of both. And to complete the trifecta, Pearl is a fantastic, well produced record. High 4 / low 5.
What an amazing voice, so strong and forceful but with nuance and soul and a crackle. The band is great and she is great and the album is great. For me, her version of Kris Kristofferson's "Me and Bobby McGee" is the star here. I normally shy away from the big hit and the obvious but she puts everything in to this one and it slays. What a triumph.
Pure heart and soul channelled through contemporary blues. 9.8/10 Best Tracks: "Move Over" "Cry Baby" "Half Moon" "My Baby" "Me and Bobby McGee"
Cry Baby! Jes Jappelin.
This is everything you know and expect when you think of Janis Joplin.
Pearl isn’t just Janis Joplin’s best album—it feels like everything she was building toward finally came together. There’s raw power, yes, but also a sense of clarity and control she didn’t always have on earlier records. Her voice is ferocious and vulnerable in equal measure, full of cracks, growls, and aching soul, and on songs like Cry Baby, A Woman Left Lonely, and Me and Bobby McGee, she tears right through you. Each track feels lived-in, emotionally charged, and completely her. The production is tighter, the arrangements are richer, and the band—Full Tilt Boogie—gives her just the right platform without ever overshadowing her. Even the fun, loose moments (Move Over, Mercedes Benz) have that unmistakable Janis grit and charm. It’s a tragic triumph in some ways, released just after her death, but it’s also a lasting reminder of her brilliance.
4.5
Oh lord that's good 💯
Wow. This was fantastic. I dont know how it took me this long to listen to Janis Joplin.
I was already really enjoying this album (and was likely to give it a five), when Mercedes Benz came on and unlocked a core childhood memory. I had forgotten about it for 25 years, but my mum used to sing Mercedes Benz to me to try and get me to sleep when I was very young, (I can only assume she had already tried all the more traditional lullabies). I played the song for her to confirm and she recognised it instantly. I’ve now been playing this album all weekend. Mercedes Benz aside, it was always going to be five stars.
Love u Janis!
Live fast, die young and leave a cracking album
A great album. Never listened to it apart from the hits. Exactly what I hope to find by going through this list.
Favorite Track: Me and Bobby McGee
What a legend. Janis has soul, texture, power. Total package. Always adds extra layers when it's an artist's last go. Especially since the album came out after her death. Feels like a goodbye or memoriam. Love you Janis ❤️
What a voice! 🔥 I only knew 2 Janis Joplin songs before going into this. Ended up recognising a 3rd thanks to a highly annoying perfume advert. That does not do her justice because this album was amazing! Such a talent, died way too young. Reminds me of Amy Winehouse - unique voices and I think both would have gone on to incredible things This is in my top 3 albums on here so far. Loved it 5 ⭐️
eu amo, nao tem como
Wonderful album by one of the greatest pop/rock performers of all time.
Not much to say about this. It is a solid 5/5.
One of the most powerful female singers of all time. She deserved so much more than the way she was treated. It’s a shame she died before she had a chance to be embraced by the right people.
Great album
A great listen. Was blown away by the power and raw soul of Janis's voice. Such a shame this turned out to be her last album
Really enjoyed this album as it captures the raw power of Joplins voice. It is quite poignant that the instrumental track was left as it was because Joplin had died before she was able to record vocals. A tragic loss. 5 stars.
Freedoms just another word
Nice I liked it more than I thought I would. Also it clocks in at just over half an hour which seems right for how strong the sound is
I listened to this one twice, better the second time through cause I was paying more attention. Great lyrics, and you know the sound you are going to get, but too many iconic songs not to give a top rating.
bloody love it.
Sensazionale
She is the queen of rock.
Not something I want to listen to every day, but it feels wrong not to give it 5 stars.
god her voice and the guitar ... what a combo!! I can't believe I have never listened to this before
I mean, it's fuggin' JJ. Just amazing voice. Quintessential early 70s RnB
I’ve listened to Me and Bobby McGee before (thank you Kris Kristoffersson for that gem) and really enjoyed Janis’s voice on that one. That feeling can be shared to the rest of the songs on this album, she has such a powerful and raw voice with great lyrics and rock elements on all of the songs. Cry Baby is so raw and you can feel the emotion pouring out in her voice, Trust Me as well. What a sad story that this had to be released post humorously. It makes sense that this exalted her even further as this was one of the most complete albums I’ve listened to in this challenge with the vocals, lyrics, rock and blues elements, passion and raw talent. Truly a tragedy we didn’t get more music from her.
Had never heard the whole album. It was every bit as good as I hoped it would be. Wonderful musicianship, too! New faves: Half Moon, Buried Alive in the Blues, A Woman Left Lonely
That voice. That soul. I'm pretty familiar with this album, but it never fails to give me goosebumps at several points. Me and Bobby McGee is the greatest cover version ever (fight me!), and Cry Baby is up there with the great vocal performances, but every other track is great too. Top musicianship too, although Joplin always takes center stage. It doesn't matter to me that she didn't write most of these songs, because she makes them all her own
Incredible. Brilliant. Stunning album.
Chills. Damn. First album on this list I haven't heard before that is getting 5 stars. Can't wait to relisten
Yes what a screamer, obvs knew alot of the songs but not the totality.musical and poetic mastery with a touch if country soul and the hippie thing. Was awesome really.
Fantastic album, Joplin is a vocal powerhouse!
First listen - I can’t believe I have to admit it. But holy crap- worth the hype!
Personal enjoyment: 5/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
Love it, from start to finish
one of the greatest voices of all time excellent blues/rock album I bought this on cassette for $5 in Sydney when I lived there, and only had a Walkman
Ein zeitloses Album. Die Band und Janis Joplin sind eine Einheit.
I’ve heard about Ms. Joplin my entire life and this is my first time ever listening to her. The soul in her voice JUMPED out the records, my goodness, I want expecting that whatsoever.
Ok I'm gonna need to stop you right there. You mean to tell me that Janis Joplin died at what I can only assume was the peak of her recording career? Because I cannot imagine her producing a better record than this one. Oh my goodness. I honestly don't even know how to put into words how I feel about this record. It has everything I love - fast, upbeat grooves played by an excellent rock and roll/soul band. Motown vibes. Soul. Amazing instrumentation and mixing. And on top of all of that (which would be enough for four stars for most albums with all of that), it's got Janis on vocals absolutely blowing everyone out of the water. I don't even care that there's a filler track on this album ("Mercedes Benz"). It's charming enough that I can let it slide. I am such a sucker for an album like this. There have been albums that have felt like they were made for me that I just didn't like. Albums I felt like, because they checked a handful of boxes that generally agree with my musical tastes, had to be a five star album but yet weren't because they were too perfect. I was worried after a couple of tracks that this would be one of those. It wasn't. It was just one kick ass album. God bless this woman. She died far too soon. Five stars. Standout Tracks: Move Over, Cry Baby, Half Moon, Me and Bobby McGee, Get It While You Can
She sounds like that smoking aunt that everyone has. Despite that, her vocals are insane. This is a great album, good songs, good lyrics and very well played instruments. Out of the members of the "27 Club" she is the only one that I never imagined going much far than this. I mean, she sang good songs, but she didn't have the same creative force as Hendrix or Morrisson. But I can't deny that it would have been very interesting to listen to more of this powerful voice throughout the 70s.
Fantastic!
Almost made the mistake of giving this a 4 but listened a second time through. Incredible album and definitely a worthy 5.
Great album
This is #day173 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… how about Janis Joplin's swansong? Her vocal power is undeniable, as is her stage presence. There's truly no one like her. The backing band blueses their hearts out with hooky melodies and rhythms, while Janis' soul shines bright, breaking through… to the other side? This is a 5 out of 5. Looking forward to #day174.
Janis Joplin's *Pearl* is a landmark album in rock and blues history, released posthumously in January 1971. It captures Joplin at the height of her vocal prowess and emotional depth, showcasing her raw talent and vulnerability. Here are some listening notes for the album: ### 1. **"Move Over"** - A fiery, blues-rock opener that sets the tone for the album. - Joplin's voice is powerful and commanding, filled with urgency and passion. - The lyrics reflect her demand for respect and independence in relationships. ### 2. **"Cry Baby"** - A soulful, emotional ballad that highlights Joplin's ability to convey pain and longing. - The Full Tilt Boogie Band provides a tight, groovy backdrop. - Her vocal delivery is raw and heartfelt, making it one of her most iconic performances. ### 3. **"A Woman Left Lonely"** - A slower, more introspective track that showcases Joplin's vulnerability. - The lyrics explore themes of heartbreak and solitude, resonating deeply with her personal struggles. - The arrangement is understated, allowing her voice to take center stage. ### 4. **"Half Moon"** - An upbeat, celebratory track with a gospel-inspired feel. - Joplin's vocals are joyful and exuberant, contrasting with the more somber moments on the album. - The horn section adds a lively, dynamic layer to the song. ### 5. **"Buried Alive in the Blues"** - An instrumental track, as Joplin was scheduled to record her vocals the day after she passed away. - The Full Tilt Boogie Band shines here, delivering a tight, bluesy performance. - The absence of her voice feels haunting, adding a layer of poignancy to the album. ### 6. **"My Baby"** - A funky, upbeat track with a strong groove. - Joplin's vocals are playful and sassy, showcasing her versatility as a performer. - The song feels like a celebration of love and desire. ### 7. **"Me and Bobby McGee"** - Arguably Joplin's most famous song, written by Kris Kristofferson and Fred Foster. - Her rendition is deeply emotional, blending joy and sorrow as she tells the story of freedom and loss. - The song builds to a powerful climax, with Joplin's voice soaring in the final verses. ### 8. **"Mercedes Benz"** - A acapella track that is both humorous and poignant. - Joplin's voice is stripped down and raw, delivering a satirical take on materialism. - The simplicity of the arrangement makes it one of her most memorable performances. ### 9. **"Trust Me"** - A soulful, mid-tempo track with a smooth groove. - Joplin's vocals are tender and pleading, showcasing her ability to convey vulnerability. - The lyrics explore themes of trust and commitment in relationships. ### 10. **"Get It While You Can"** - A powerful closing track that serves as a life-affirming anthem. - Joplin's vocals are passionate and defiant, urging listeners to seize the moment. - The song feels like a fitting farewell, encapsulating her philosophy of living life to the fullest. ### Overall Impressions: - *Pearl* is a masterpiece that captures Janis Joplin's incredible range as a vocalist and her ability to connect with listeners on a deeply emotional level. - The album blends blues, rock, and soul seamlessly, with the Full Tilt Boogie Band providing a solid, dynamic foundation. - Joplin's untimely death adds a layer of tragedy to the album, but her spirit and talent shine through in every track. - *Pearl* remains a timeless testament to her artistry and influence on rock and blues music. Listening to *Pearl* is not just an auditory experience but an emotional journey through the highs and lows of Janis Joplin's life and music.
Love Janis
Legend!
Probably a 4.5 rounded up. A superb album and, at risk of overstating the obvious, a tragedy we lost her so soon. I had not realized she died BEFORE she even released her second album. What's more, it puzzles me to acknowledge she was only 27 when she did not look or sound it (I guess heroin will do that to person). Janis Joplin, and her album pearl, seem to be right at the intersection of soul, blues, and rock. And I had not realized how much her backing band actually kinda shreds (most notably on My Baby). Gosh, to hear this record for the first time, knowing Janis had left this world had to have been chilling. RIP.
<3
Folksy witchcraft vibes Sang with unbridled passion Of a free woman
RIP patti's friend
70s talent on the instrument with almost a 50s feel with the vocalist. Adding this one to the library
Janis Joplin’s Pearl is a great piece of blues that has the incredible capacity of traveling through the ages while still remaining relevant and deeply inspirational.
<3
this is SUCH a good album and it's really such a tragedy that Janis died right at this moment when she finally had the creative freedom she wanted as well as a backing band that was able to match her talents beat for beat and had incredible chemistry with her. I can't believe so few recordings of her and the Full Tilt Boogie Band exist...Wikipedia says that none of the concerts she played on tour with them were recorded and we only really have two appearances on The Dick Cavett Show and this album to immortalize their sound. all the more reason to be grateful for what we have- but just imagine the kind of career Janis could have had if she hadn't died when she did. truly a one-in-a-million voice, and a one-in-a-million artist, and i treasure this album and her three others with all my heart.
Outstanding
Yeah that was great
What an album! That voice, the one-two hit of Me & Bobby McGee (one of my all time favourite songs) and Mercedes Benz, Move Over, the tribute to Janis’s early death that is Buried Alive in the Blues…God, where do I start? This is fabulous. I’ve always thought that Janis Joplin is well overdue a reevaluation. It seems like she’s kind of not had the revival amongst modern day listeners that some of her peers have, but looking at this album I honestly cannot see why. This is absolutely top tier stuff.
This was an excellent listen. I remember some of these songs playing when I was young, but this is the first time I listened to this as an adult. Well worth the revisit.
A perfect ten tracks. Her voice is one of the coolest-sounding instruments ever. I didn’t realize the album was released posthumously, what a sadness.
Janis is a kween that VOICE 💦
Janis didn’t have the best voice in the world, but god damn did she know how to use it. The music and the vocals fit together perfectly, and come together to make something incredibly powerful. It’s upsetting that this was Janis Joplin’s swan song, but at least she went out on top.
Awesome
Her voice doesn’t merely come from a real place - it takes you there as well, which can’t be said about many ‘real things.’ It wobbles and clouds over, tho it’s also so clear, sound, and solid. Does she push it? Not as much as you may think. So give me Janis. Then I’m good, and in that special way, I can live all over again.
The only track I didn't like is the instrumental "Buried Alive in the Blues" but apparently Janis died before the vocals for that could be recorded, otherwise it is an amazing album.
Bought the record
Janis.
Damn!!
So much character and soul in her voice. Band sounded great as well.
Great album. Iconic voice
Incredible. The tone of her voice is so special. This album is fun, emotional, rollicking, anything else you want from music. It's only 34 minutes, but it feels like a full lifetime is contained in those 34 minutes.
I knew most of these songs, but really enjoyed listening to them again. Joplin was a real talent that we lost too early, but her music is great. Five stars.
Could just copy and paste my rumours review. Which came out first?
For all her infamy, I’ve never actually heard any Janis Joplin. Now I can see what the fuss was about! So raw and energetic
An instant classic.
I have no words. This was a delight!
A true classic.
Amazing!
What is there really to say about this album. Some of the best vocal performances in rock history.
Blues my not be my thing entirely but Janis Joplin's posthumus album is a great one. Her vocal range was simply fantastic and her raw emotion and passion on these songs was one of a kind. The album is well produced and the backing band did a really good job, the music is great and they never overshadowed Janis. It doesn't have some of the my favorite songs (Piece of my heart, for instance), but it is still a very strong collection of songs, which overall deserve a close 5 (4.5 rounded up to 5).
Just beautiful. Her voice is just beautiful and full of raw emotion. The lyrics really touch the heart and the time period. Listening to the whole album was so much better than just one song because it of all worked together to write a story. I hate to say this b Bobby McGee (beautiful song!) almost felt out of place and to commercial for the rest of the album. Half moon and my baby were my favorites.
Soulful and passionate. Janis is awesome. Her band is really groovy too. Especially love the organ playing. Bobby McGee is actually a cover. It was written by Kris Kristofferson and other people have sang it, but Janis' version is the best. Move Over is a favorite of mine and reminds me of some of her earlier stuff with Big Brother & Holding Co. This is her last album. Released 3 months after her death. A beautiful voice and a beautiful spirit that we lost too soon. Loved this album.
F**king love it!Made me almost cried
Pretty perfect. Also love 34 min albums.
What a fun album. So much passion coming from Janis.
JANIS JOPLIN!! HELL YEAH!!! I used to listen to this album with my mom when I was little!
When Joplin (supposedly) said to Leonard Cohen "we are ugly but we have the music", I'm not sure she was right about the former, but she definitely was about the latter. This is my first time hearing her at all, and holy shit she's incredible. This is the first album I'm gonna give 5 stars to on my first listen.
This is a great album, very bluesy, with distinctive elements from that time (Hammond organ, but wisely used), and her voice. What a voice! All killers no fillers, and the highlights of the album are just stellar. Move Over, by itself, deserves more than 5 stars.
This reminds me yet again that I need to listen to more Janis. Sad knowing the context, but the music is so so good.
Never heard any of Janis' solo material & only I'm only familiar with a few Big Brother & the Holding Co songs. I may have heard "Me and Bobby McGee" but wasn't intentionally listening. I'm really enjoying this! Her voice is incredible, lives up to the hype in every way. Favorites: "Half Moon", "Move Over" (3x) 5 stars, A+
Great album from an artist who left us with too little.
wow!
# Playlist track - Get It While You Can # Notes - Janis vocals are so refreshingly fun and unique. - The accompanying band is absolutely amazing. Instrumentals are top-notch throughout! - Janis seems like a fascinating character, and the album cover just compliments that nicely. - Definitely worth giving a listen, or two, or three. Super fun and rewarding.
Epic, beautiful, powerful, sad. I think Move Over is my fave today, it's all good.
Iconic stuff - she was a phenomenon! Joplin is, of course, amazing, but her band on this are tight AF. Fave tracks - "Move Over" is an awesome tune, and I liked Slade's version of it a few reviews back. It's got me wondering how many songs appear multiple times on this list, and which song is the most common! 🤔 "Mercedes Benz" is also tremendous stuff, though leave it to late stage capitalism to co-opt it into an actual advert. 😒 I also enjoyed hearing "Me and Bobby McGee" - I feel like that song title gets referenced a lot but I don't recall listening to the lyrics closely before...
Totally Blown away by this. A sensational album with beautiful bluesy rock. An artist I have never really listened to and cheap thrills absolutely will go onto the "must listen to" list. The album is littered with incredible and powerful songs
07/10/24 Surprisingly enjoyed this album.
One of those brilliant and tragic albums only released after her death. What a talent. Ok not all the songs are hers but she makes them hers with that voice and swagger. One of my all tine favourite female vocalists.
This album rocks. The Full Tilt Boogie Band should've been a household name. It's an odd coincidence I got this album the day after Kris Kristofferson died. Freedoms just another word for nothing left to lose. Janis always has dem ol' kosmic blues. 5 stars all day.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again and again: having a powerful voice is not about singing scales. Janis probably wouldn’t have made it past the first round of American Idol, but she deserves her place among the best vocalists this country has produced, period.
Man, did she know how to sing the blues! The one song on the album without her voice (because she had passed away) reminds us that there was a funky band there, too.
Wow
I was not impressed by the big brother and the holding company record. This sounds like a masterpiece from the first note. I’m really enjoying this record.
huumehörhö... drugggiee... druggie!! DRUUUGS... DRUUGHEAAD....Olen puolalainen ja olen positiivisesti yllättynyt tästä... Saan tästä melkoisen määrän paskaa talossani, mutta Janis on jotenkin perseestä. Hänellä on yksi temppu - räikeä blues-huuto. Sen lisäksi hänen mumisevat tyylinsä kuulostavat fyysisesti tuskalliselta ja ärsyttävät minua. hippipaska, en tykkäisi tästä henkilöstä oikeassa elämässä oonneksi on kuollut niin ei tarvi tavata HEHHEH.... druggie..... She had no regard for her own life, so why should anyone care about her music. bobby mcgee
That's smooth.
Einfach gut
5 sterren.
Janis is a absolute fucking legend! Great listen!
Absolutely amazing artiste, and a fantastic album. 5/5
A bright, shining, shooting star.
Rock and Roll has given us many gifts. None exceed the power and pathos of Me and Bobby McGee.
Ihana tunnelma
What a legend
I listened to the Legacy version of this album. Easiest 2h 15m listen. Love Janis.
The cover says it all. Joyful flamboyance with a smoldering cigarette in the center.
Joplin is an icon, and "Pearl" serves as both a showcase of her considerable talent and a tribute to her enduring legacy. "Cry Baby," "Me and Bobby McGee," and "Mercedes Benz" are standout moments, but the entire album has aged remarkably well in terms of songwriting, performance, and pacing, offering a poignant glimpse into what might have been. The inclusion of the instrumental "Buried Alive In The Blues" further heightens the sense of loss, reminding us of the unique voice and true legend we lost too soon.
This was sooooooo good! 5/5
love her
Was so good I actually have no complaints
I’ve always felt like you either love Janis Joplin’s voice or you hate it. No in between. I love her voice and I feel like everything comes together for this I love her voice and what she emotes. Always thought it was cool kristofferson said me and Bobby McGee was her song and as much as I’ve heard that song, I don’t get tired of it. It’s a 5 for me.
8/21/24. Wow, what a voice! First time really listening to Janis and now I understand the praise. Amazing voice with an incredible blues sound with her backing band.
Favorite Tracks: Me and Bobby McGee Cry Baby Mercrdez Benz
Very cool
This was much better than expected. The whole album was fantastic from start to finish. Much more bluesy than I expected, then again I hadn't really given Janis a chance until now, but that's why we're here!
What an incredible voice partnered with another sad story from the 70s.
What a talent! Love this.
Wonderful
This is a fantastic album. Janis bares her soul when she sings. This is no doubt an unpopular opinion, but to me the most well known songs (Bobby McGee and Mercedes) are the weakest songs on the album.
Great little album packed full of classics
If I had a Time Machine, I’d head back. Watch Janis Joplin live and head back! I’d then never use it again. This is absolutely epic! 4.9
Didn’t even notice when it looped back. Interesting and unique voice that cannot be mistaken for anyone else, but also the songs are really good too.
The great songs carry the weaker to a 5 star or A- rating for me.
I grew up on Janis. Easy 5/5
What can you say about Janis that hasn’t already been said? You either are going to love her voice or hate it. I happen to fall into the former camp and her final record is just great.
I’ve never really had much of an interest in Janis Joplin’s music, which is a shame since we’re both Gulf Coast Texans. A few weeks ago, I listened to Big Brother and the Holding Company’s Cheap Thrills, and I thought it was fine, but I certainly wasn’t blown away by it. I imagine I’ll probably feel the same way about this album. I was very pleasantly surprised by this album. I’m not usually a fan of blues rock, but this album was great. I loved that the sound was mostly driven by the piano and Hammond organ, with guitar playing filling things out when needed. This album had a much better sound from a technical aspect than Cheap Thrills, and that also helps set Pearl apart in my opinion. Janis’s singing is fantastic, and the full range of her vocal abilities is on display on this album. She can wail, she can croon, and everything in between. “Cry Baby” had my favorite vocals. The Hammond organ backed up her wailing on the chorus incredibly well. Take me to church, indeed. Janis’s softer vocals on “A Woman Left Lonely” were fantastic as well, and I loved that her singing was always in the spotlight. The instrumentals on this album were great too, and like the vocals, “Cry Baby” was my favorite track on the album, but the boogie sound of “Half Moon” was great too. The piano and organ playing sounded great with Janis’s vocals, creating one of the most unique and original blues rock albums I’ve ever heard. “My Baby” and “Me and Bobby McGee” started off side B with a bang. I really loved the lyrics to “Me and Bobby McGee,” which I know Janis didn’t write, but she sang it to perfection. I loved that each song on this album felt unique and fresh, but the distinct blues sound was still present throughout. This album was excellent from start to finish, and it’s a shining example of Janis Joplin’s vocal abilities. I had a great time listening to it, and it undoubtedly belongs on this list.
Move Over! Strong vocals. 5/5
Great late 60s blues, Janis was a force of nature
#52 - wasn't expecting to live this as much as I did. Perfect vibes, incredible voice, amazing band (those keys!!). Did not know much about her so could come into this without context. Perfect capture of its time. Amazing album.
There's a strange charisma about her voice that grows on me the more I listen to her. She was obviously great, but each time I put on one of her albums I have that same experience.
Absolutely fucking epic
Always loved this lady
Favourite songs: 1st - Move Over 2nd - Buried Alive in the Blues 3rd - Mercedes Benz
One of the best rock and roll vocalists ever and a life sadly cut short
Janet Joplin at the absolute peak of her powers. We'll never know what could have been, but what we were lucky enough to get to hear was utterly fantastic.
Incredible person and voice, nobody else was or has been like her. The instrumentals are great here too, 'buried alive in blues' has no vocals as Janis died before she could record them, but it's still a fun track. Every song on here is great and I could listen to her all day
Amazing - I've heard some songs, I know Janis Joplin, but I had never listened to this. I love it.
A fantastic finale for Janis. She was an inspiration incredible singer who burned out too soon, and while this is certainly her best project and a great album I always come away thinking she had her best stuff ahead of her. Me and Bobby McGee is the hit and best song here (what a jam at the end!) but every song is great, including the goofy Mercedes Benz (her last recording). Janis’ vocal performance is incredible on all tracks - most notably to me on Bobby McGee, Cry Baby and Half Moon. One of the better vocal “pop” albums of the 60’s and the best example of Janis’ talents.
There are hits, and then there are just good songs with a deep blues-rock sound, wholesome, sensible lyrics, and Joplin's one-of-a-kind vocals.
Janis Joplin’s singing is just really, really good. Like really good.
5/5. Some solid rock songwriting, each song sounds diverse enough to feel like a complete album. No denying Janis's vocals are the standout here. The raspy, broken singing brings out the passion of each song. I feel like this is such a good break up album, longing for a love that is no longer here. Yes, most of the songs are covers but hard to appreciate them any other way besides here. Best Song: My Baby, Me and Bobby McGee, Cry Baby
Gonna admit I thought I wasn't going to like this and it was awesome. Janis had a bit of unexpected soul to her singing that made love this album.
Amazing album with high levels of chemistry between the musicians. I love how the songs flow, tracks like "Half Moon" and "Cry Baby" know well when to explode and when to strip back. The production really is great, everything sounds super crisp and you can surely feel a sense of energetic joy in the air. And of course, i can't not mention Janis Joplin's seemingly effortless delivery over these busy instrumentals, on which she confidently goes all out specially on the climaxes. Her vocals are unmatched really, one of the most characteristic singers in american popular music, i love her raspy but stunningly powerful tone. Technically impressive but also very powerful! Other favourites... hell this album is all killer. I'll specially shout out "Move Over", "Woman Left Lonely" and "Me And Bobby McGee".
What a truly unbelievable talent she was. She did us January 19th birthday havers very proud. On this album in particular, I mean what is there to say. The songs are brilliant, her voice is addicting, the arrangements are incredible. So glad to finally listen to this album from front to back. Favorite track: Buried Alive in the Blues
An album my dad showed me, his love for Janis Joplin rubbed off on me! Thank you Dad
Janis Joplin was very special, her early departure certainly a sad one. The album had some posthumous elements apparently, with a track completely instrumental as she did not do the vocals for it before her passing. Knowing this, the track carries a sense of homage to her. Quite appropriate. The album itself is full of effort the listener can hear. "Freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose." featured in the song "Me and Bobby McGee". Janis certainly seemed to approach her vocals in this way, where she repeatedly belts out her lyrics, giving it everything she knows to give. Where she sounds smooth and clear, could then go to a lovely raspiness that is filled with personality. This is very respectable and a testament to her talent as a performer. This is a good album, and the world can find reason to be grateful for it.
What a voice!
Incredible
Love love love Janis Joplin. She is one of the greatest. Exceptional vocals. Raw Gritty Powerful Emotional One of the best that sadly left us too soon.
Absolute banger. Love her.
I absolutely love Janis Joplin and was elated to see this album come up. Released posthumously only a few months after death, this album always leaves me wishing she had stayed alive and continued to release music for another 40 years, although in some ways, Janis being the artist she was, it almost strangely seems right to go out early, as long as it is in a blaze of glory. Luckily, this album is that blaze. 'Move Over' is a fantastic opener, setting the scene for a high energy ball of vocal electricity that the album delivers. 'Cry Baby' is a showcase of the incredible voice and range that Joplin possessed. The album also has the huge hit 'Me and Bobby McGee' which starts off surprisingly quiet and "normal" for a Janis Joplin song. It's a great song that ramps up in the signature style of the artist at the end. Her acapella 'Mercedes Benz' is a brief moment of respite from the chaotic energy of the album. Recorded only three days before her death, the song is a poem of sorts, about the desire for things that other people have. One of the most notable tracks is 'Buried Alive in the Blues'. It is noteworthy for being completely instrumental, as Joplin passed away before the vocals could be recorded. Judging by the music of the song, she was gonna give it her absolute everything (as she always does), and it would have been a classic. The song always reminds me of the sad reality that she was taken so soon. She is one of the absolute greatest vocalists of all time. That's not to say that this is for everyone, her distinctive voice can put people off. But she is one of my favorites. Outstanding album. 5/5
What a vocalist
Joplin was a powerhouse and this album proves it would like to hear another come up on here to compare but love this one.
Mega
What a voice. Just pure power.
Great album start to finish. I hadn't listened to the full thing before, so I'm glad I found it through here.
Bluesy, funky, rock'n'rolly, and one of the most iconic voices in music. I know it's a cover but this version of Cry Baby is criminally underrated and "I'd like to do a song of great social and political import" pops into my head more often than I'd like to admit (usually while watching someone be messy in public). Another Insta-5 for me. It's a shame we didn't have an opportunity to see more of what she could do.
Definitely enjoyed this one. Bobby McGee has long been on my Liked list on Spotify and with good reason, it's a pretty amazing track. Janis Joplin was an awesome singer. Her other album we listened to fell a bit flat in terms of songwriting, and/or choice of songs. While better here, it's still the weakest aspect of this album. But Janis made it work.
My favorite female singer!
I’m ashamed to say that I had never listened to any of Janis Joplin’s work before I listened to this album, despite knowing how much of a highly regarded name she is in the music world. Upon listening, I see exactly why. A true legend lost too soon.
Interessante 'Move Over', ah ok 'Cry Baby'. Sono tutte molto belle!
Blew my socks off
Theres this part of the Monterey Pop festival documentary where you see Mama Cass hearing Janis go off and shes just floored by her voice. I feel like that sums up my entire take on this album. 5/5
Janis Joplin’s voice is a marvel of nature, and Pearl should be absolutely heart-breaking, but it’s full of such genuine Joie-de-vivre that it’s difficult to allow yourself to wallow. Just revel in the beautiful humanity of it all
Amazing
SooOo good
This album hits harder when your brother played it non stop during college
Volle Punktzahl.
Amazing classic!
🤘 God damn, Janis rocks.
Absolute queen man
Legendary artist, one of my favorites to ever do it. This was the last recorded album of hers before she died, and on the song “Buried Alive in the Blues” there’s no vocal track. My favorites on here include “A woman left lonely” and “get it while you can”. Her rendition of “me and Bobby mcgee” is one of the all time great rock n roll songs.
love that the production doesn't drown out her voice.
Pretty rad. A fitting final album. Half Moon is a funky jam.
Top notch band. Top notch singer.
Songbird of her generation. I likey)
One of a kind.
-the instrumental in move over fucking slaps -giving a little jazzy blues -don’t get me wrong, Janis is a phenomenal singer but man does the guitar on these track fuck -god damn there are literally no skips -I would literally listen to all these songs with the tracks separated -I simply don’t have any notes
So brilliant and unique. Many have tried to copy, but never succeeded Love Half Moon 😎👏 Me and Bobby Magee ⭐ Summertime live 👍 Another piece of my heart ❤️ A wow 5 album
This grooves so hard and makes me wonder why historically record companies have no goddamn idea what they're doing in releasing singles - why isn't something like the rocking/bluesy "Half Moon" constantly played as much as "Me and Bobby McGee" - not that there's anything wrong with the latter but you're not getting anything close to the complete picture with the latter song. Not just from Janis' vocals (the rare vocalist that I actually love listening to) but this band which kicked ass all over this album. Love everything about this - a great rock album and just obviously sucks that it was her last one, but in retrospect it's a hell of a way to go out. If anything I wish it was released as a band since everyone contributed. Highest point: "Half Moon" which is the best song she ever recorded (including the band on that compliment for sure) but the entire album has no skips. 10/10 5 stars.
A very very good album. At no point did I ever feel like skipping a song. A beautiful voice complimented by the instrumentals. I wish I paid more attention to the lyrics, but when I did it was good. Not as rock as my usual music, but a solid listen
Her best album
An amazing band, great grooves, and that voice that sits perfectly in the mix with passion, joy, and desperation. I think this is the first time I’ve given five stars in a first listen. A great album!
fucking brilliant super vibey what a voice man
This is one of a handful of albums that takes on extra significance when you consider the circumstances surrounding it—Janis Joplin died just three months before its release. And so, through the joy, the rocking, and the humor, the album is underpinned by the knowledge that Janis was no longer with us by the time we got to hear it. “Cry Baby, “Me and Bobby McGee,” and “Mercedes Benz” are all classics, but it’s her resounding absence on the track “Buried Alive in the Blues” that makes you realize two things: what a wonderful group the Full Tilt Boogie Band was, and what a loss Joplin’s death was to the world of music.
Why do the best female vocalists always suffer tragically? Janis Joplin was the one singer that could have had such a great career. If only… Regardless, Pearl is that album that you get or you don't and to not hear the pain, grief, joy and pain in that sweet, sweet voice means you're missing out. 5/5.
Absolutely great. Amazing voice.
This album was great. Such an iconic voice, she could sing loudly without screaming. "Cry baby", "me and Bobby Mcgee", and "Mercedes Benz" are classics tracks of this album, but it's just great blues music from beginning to end.
4.5 - Her voice is so unique and has a lot of depth. Loved this album a lot. Me and Bobby McGee has been a staple of mine for a long time
A larger-than-life voice paired with some great instrumentals. Crazy to think she might not have even reached her full potential. RIP Janis.
Exquisite!
Love Janis. Love the gravel and grit of her voice and in her being that permeates the songs she sings. I get that it's not everyone's cup of tea. But fuck them, with no due respect. She's raw and unguarded and it comes across in her singing and that's why I love her and the album. Favorite Tracks: Cry Baby, Me and Bobby McGee.
Great, great album. What shame she:didn’t get to follow it up properly.
goddess
One of the grew voices of rock and roll of all time
So, I don't know how I've managed to never hear "Me and Bobby McGee" but I've heard "Cry Baby" a million times. That voice is really something, and this album is perfect as is.
This is the reason I live this app. I have never really given Janis Joplin much thought. I was vaguely aware of her, but wouldn't have been able to name one of her songs. This album was an amazing wake up for me! Her voice is (was) amazing! I will definitely listen to this again. Thank you!
What a voice! What a voice full of sorrow and pain.
The perfect culmination of her career. It combines some bluesy caterwauling with a lot more polish. My only complaint is that it isn't longer, which makes sense given the timing on its recording and her death.
I enjoyed this a lot, her voice is very distinct and expressive. I thought the instrumentals on most of the tracks were fun too.
I've heard of her and her amazing talent, btw not many women here, should be though. I expect different level of goodness here. First song, I like the fast start it has a disco vibe low key. I love the constant beat. Her voice is also very Donna Summer. It's getting progressive. The guitar break, is mostly basic in rock albums, so same here, but it fills the song well. It went great into the last verse and the outro was as amazing as possible. Second song, what a vocal start, kinda of a voice crack, maybe not, still good. Oh it got slow and romantic in a secondd. The beat goes up and then down, it has Madonna's \"back in business\" vibe in that sense. It's getting progressive and it hits the note with her vocals and the guitar. She fast talks now, funn, also has a Etta James like voice too. Typical outro, love that. I liked that ending \"yeah\" vocal. I'm having such funn. Third song, it's slow already. She has a powerful voice, gotta love that at least. I'm not a fan of slow songs in rock, but this one has Elton John vibes, and the instrumental break is giving. It got too repetitive at the end, but that's the vibe I suppose. Not as good as the last two songs, but expected one. 4th song, disco vibes is back. She has a different was of vocalling now, more opera I see in some parts. Break is not basic, it has guitar and piano as I hear. I liked the guitar riffs here, and her chaotic singing. The piano chiming in was also quite nice. Outro is as it mostly was in the 1970s. Basically I'm enjoying this tooo much. 5th song, it's veeery funky and danceable already. I think it's instrumental, but I doubt it. There are many instruments in different ears they appear mostly. Yes it's instrumental, and as the title suggests it's blues. Such energyy, loved this, but I need another version with lyrics. 6th song, less fast. The guitar and piano are perfect with each other here, it's full andd fills my ears differently. Choir came in for one part only. Short instrumental break, which has an amazing beat, with the guitar riffing. It stopped, made me think it was done, and it's going, after break it's a little slower. Outro is, as always, the song fading away. 7th song, guitar start, it's upbeat, and has 4 non blades vibe. The beat came in after some lines and now it's even more perfect. Love her voice generally. The bridge is "la-da-da" which I thought would be upbeat, but it's even better and it's slowly getting faster, it ended, however that was quite catchy and a great way to transition to the last verse, which has a faster beat. Outro is one of the best instrumental here. 8th song, she said what the song is about at start. It's a cappella with a little beat in the background, oh it's a short song, might stay like this. It was clean and I loved that, basically a great way to experience her voice. She said "that's it" and laughed a little at the end, such funn. 9th song, forgot to take notes, oops. It's going too great, as expected. It's upbeat, and has a progressive vibe in some parts. Her powerful voice is more present here. Couldn't expect any more betterness from her at this point. 10th song, literal blues start, the piano chords I mean. It's upbeat, but also downtempo. The beat is not different from other songs, third note hits louder than the two before. Instrumental break, pardon me, was edging at the end, which made it better I must say. Outro and she's getting louder and saying as much as possible. I wish this wasn't the last song. Definitely a vibe, and just because of this album, I want to check her other stuff, but idk which of her albums are here, not that it matters tho, I'll listen to it twice if needed. Basically, 5 stars, most of them were bops, slow ones weren't painful, and this kind of psychedelic rock is the best one so far.
Such a sad story but such a cool as shit blues album. Janis Joplin’s voice is literally incredible. I would give this album six stars if I could.
An all timer, what a voice.
I love Janis. And this album is exceptional.
Standouts: Move Over, Cry Baby, Me and Bobby McGee, Trust Me
The energy captured on this album is a gift. Since we didn't have Janis for a long time, we have to make due with the memory and the music. Classic, funny, deeply sad and soulful.
Si, claro
Day33 - i’ve only heard me and bobby mcgee off this album and it’s not even the best song on the album. her voice is awesome and she can scream like no one else.
Plain and simple: One of the great classics of Rock History - and you can hear why. Everyone should now "Me and Bobby McGee" and "Mercedes Benz", but the rest is just as great. Sweaty, heartfelt blues rock with one of the best and most legendary singers ever.
Stunning post posthumous work that captured a bluesy masterpiece of a life cut short.
You like her voice, her style, her musi. Or you will hate it - any space in between? My opinion: no 🤣 For me it works out very well - five stars
Fully immersive and soulful sound. I love it. Every song is (or feels like) a smash hit. Holy crap what an amazing album. I even loved the instrumental piece.
This album is everything my 6th grade Social Studies teacher raved about. Janis’s voice is powerfully soulful, the songs are dynamic and heavy. Great stuff!
There are so many gems I haven’t listened to and this is one of them!! Love the voice and passion!
Janis Joplin siempre en vinilo. SIEMPRE.
Great listen :)
(Mai ascoltato prima) SPACCA. Super divertente, interessante, voce pazzesca.
Loves me some Janis.
love!
Iconic voice.
Janis is Queen
Damn girl
Wow. This was so much more than I was expecting. I'd always thought Janis Joplin was a folk\rock artist - and perhaps there are other albums of hers that are more in tune with that stance - but this album was incredible. So much funk and soul filtering through. I listened to it 3 times back-to-back and fell in love a bit more every time. I've been on this site for a few months now, and the one abiding lesson I've learnt is (in general) do not judge a book by it's cover (and don't believe your preconceptions about any artist).
Great blues and rock album. She's one of my favorites.
Classic album with the big hits. Very tight, a little departure from Bug Brother and the Holding Company
Great classic with famous tunes, but prefer the legacy edition.
Fantastic, didn't know I was a Joplin fan but she just has so much emotion
I’m so sad I was too busy all day to listen. I love Janis Joplin!
brill!
Rock and blues. Cry baby, masterpiece
Amazing voice.
When I think of bright lights and candles burning at both ends, Janis will always be the first one I think of. Psychedelic gospel ballad queen. The amount and quality of sound, the sheer power of emotion she conveys on Cry Baby— have I ever given that much of myself, not just in a way that even one other person can feel, let alone the millions that have because of these recordings, but at all? To have been that close to it, whatever you wan to call it, god, the source, the beating, vital heart of existence—what a gift, what an unbearable, painful gift, and the voice to go with it, and the courage to use that voice, to be the vessel, the conduit, the megaphone, to recognize your access and allow for it, not to deny it, or tamp it down, or seal it off, but to expose yourself to the full and raw power of human existence and let it flow through you, it’s just a shattering thing to hear sometimes. And at the same time, ruthless as it is to say, the unbearableness of it, for her, herself, probably spared her, and the rest of us, from decades of her music not being like this. I don’t wish death on anyone and I would never wish death on a young performer, anyone, whether they had access to the source or not, but in this world, and that industry at that time, knowing what happens to people, knowing what happened to me, late in my 20s, and then out of my 20s, past that age where one stops acting completely intuitively, when the invincibility of youth wears off, and one starts to recognize the cost of life. It’s a truism they put on the headstones of children who die, “too pure for this world“ but I think there’s some truth in it. Not too pure for reality itself, for God‘s creation, but very possibly for what we’ve done with it. Impossible to go on in life having been Janis at 23. Anyway, I’m fucking glad she existed.
Whenever I hear her voice, it feels like it’s registering in the middle of my spine - like some kind of sonic electrocution. The shock is too strong for this to be to be an everyday kind of listen for me, but it’s nice to touch the wires and feel that jolt every now and then.
No albums on the weekend! Un auténtico descanso.
👍🥰 Get It While You Can A Woman Gets Lonely Cry Baby Me and Bobby McGee Piece of My Heart Kozmuc Blues
Love all Janis Joplin. One of the best of all time blues singers.
Todella kova. Kaikki hyvii biisejä ja Joplinia kovempaa fiilisyelijää saa hakea
Pure kunst
Janis Joplin was a musical force, who burned brightly, but burned out quickly. This is the 4th of her studio albums, released 3 months after she passed away. It is also the high-point of her discography. This album includes several masterpieces: "Cry Baby", "Me and Bobby McGee", "Mercedes Benz" and "Move Over". The rest of the album is just very good. The least compelling song is "Buried Alive In The Blues", which is notable as an unfinished piece. It is an instrumental, because Joplin died before recording the vocal tracks. All in all, this is a great record, and an important record in the history of rock. Easy 5/5 .
I was epecting some hippie music but man this kicked ass. Janis Joplin went hard and it's a shame we didn't get more music from her.
Fantastisch
I liked, I really liked .. Janis Joplin is really amazing, what a woman, she is for sure one of the best to ever do It, and this record does not have a single bad song. It is just... Good. A classic She deserves a 5.
She emerged damaged from the psych rock hippie scuzz and US middle school. Too ugly, they said, too try-hard, too white, too much. Constantly condescended to by talentless scabs riding her coattails, abused by cracker America for her soul orientation and never taken seriously by a record industry that couldn't understand the source of her particular, magnetic charisma. I love Janis. Some is a touch corny but her voice is rough, raw and soulful as a bleeding throat. She was vulnerable at a time that was considered a weakness and America destroyed her but she is American through and through. Tacky and sincere simultaneously, erratically sincere and flippant but ultimately rock, roll and soul. If anyone gets the chance listen to her version of Little Girl Blue in the Tom Jones show. She must have been 26 but embodies the world-weary, gentle patience of some ur-mother cradling a weeping child, perhaps cradling herself. Glorious woman, extraordinary talent, excellent album.
Great album
Soft 5
"I'd like to do a song of great social and political import..." What a legend. I've never straight up listened to "Pearl" but I know almost all of these songs. Her voice was so insane. I love to hear singers straddle the line of control and she rides that wave this whole album, emoting to the max, crooning growling roaring and howling out these jams. The band is tight, supplying bluesy funky grooves for her to excorcise her demons over. She sings with the blood. "Half Moon" and "A Woman Left Lonely" were the only new songs to me and I was digging them even more than the classics from the canon of Janis. "Me and Bobby McGee" what else can you say, Kris Kristofferson himself would tell you it's a Janis Joplin song now. The unfinished "Bury Me in the Blues" is a haunting inclusion, she died the day before she was scheduled to lay down the vocal track. Reading her wiki and jamming to this today made me want to rewatch the Festival Express doc and get into some Janis deep cuts just to hear more of her raw power. But seriously, folks, don't do heroin!
Absolute masterpiece.
One of the all time great voices. Honestly, the album doesn’t quite feel finished, but it doesn’t really suffer because of that.
An amazing voice backed by an incredible band.
Amazing
I guess you cant transport more emotions through music than JJ does on thos album
Me and Bobby McGee and Cry Baby- such classics!! Amazing album
absolutely glorious. easiest 5*s of the week
I really enjoy Janis's sound, very unique. I knew a couple songs by her but great to be introduced to new ones ❤️
