Reviews (page 5 of 13)
Even if this only had Rolling Stone and It Takes a Train it would still be a 5. Amazing album.
Awesome to listen to it in full again. You can hear his zeitgeist and critical thinking about classism throughout.
Iconic Dylan. Definitely incoherent at times, but in the pleasantly dissociative sense. This album is great for reasons that aren’t easily put into words. The instrumentation and mastering is great, but that’s not it. Dylan’s voice and lyrics are great (if you’re into that), but that’s not it either. It’s tough to say, but easy to say it’s a five
Bookended by 2 massive tracks this is an epic album. His voice isn't for everyone. 5
Brilliant Blues.
A classic.
There is a reason this is on every list made ever.
Very good album. Enjoyed it
Great Album
Great album all the way through!
Bob
Highway 61 Pure perfection This was my soundtrack through high school, college, early 20s into my 30s. The perfect blend of lyrics, story telling, piano, keyboard, harmonica!, rock, and fucking roll! I always wanted to throw a dinner party and have people come as a Dylan character from Highway 61. The album is just so rich with personalities and I want to meet and hear everything them. How can I help you Queen Jane? I would love to hold the diplomat's (Andy Warhol) siamese cat! I'm obviously Miss Lonely. Dylan architects the perfect flow of songs and each song's opening notes simply stir my soul with comfort and peace. He taught me a great life lesson with this album and one I try to follow---"negativity don't pull you through." It's actually an 11 but 5 will have to do.
Yes.
This was amazing!
9/10
09/04/2022 I’m in my Bob Dylan era, immediately 5 stars. — Last full day in San Antonio :(( today was super chill. I went to the Pearl farmer’s market and got a poem written for me by a guy who was writing poems on the spot from a typewriter. I asked him to write about growing older and outgrowing people and places from the past. Been reflecting a lot on where I am and where I’ve been and am going. As long as I’ve got love, I will continue to go far
Amazing album! All great songs
Is this the best Dylan album? Maybe, maybe not, but it's top 3.
Good album - Like A Rolling Stone and Desolation Row have long been on my "liked songs" playlist on Spotify. Bob Dylan absolutely deserves his reputation as a master song crafter. Now if only his voice had been a bit better. Still rounding this up from a 4.5.
GOAT
Dylan = Vinilo.
What can anyone say about 'Highway 61 Revisited' that hasn't been said countless times before? Dylan perfectly captures the cultural landscape of his homecountry and creates lyrics and music defining an entire generation while driving his own evolution into rock instrumentation. Even though Dylan was only 24(!!) years old when releasing Highway, he speaks as though he has been around for centuries with lyrical references to literary works spanning throughout the anthropocene. 'Like a Rolling Stone', 'Ballad of a Thin Man' and 'Desolation Row'. What more is there to say?
It might have been a brave and important step for a folk singer to use a rock band as backing… But ending on an 11 minute folk ballad? Dylan at his best! There are so many excellent tracks and Dylan’s storytelling is as good as it ever gets; “Ballad of a Thin Man” and “Desolation Row” being prime examples. If you rate Dylan-albums by the sheer volume of harmonica (and you should), this is quite good.
I mean, bob dylan is a genius
How does it feeeeeel
estuvo bueno
Love this!
Masterpiece.
Amazing
One of my favourite Dylan records, notable for having electric guitars on there, Bob Dylan proved his talent can transcend genres and still hold relevance through the lyrics as well as the music.
I finally got Dylan when he started to make me laugh, rather than the background whine of my early childhood. I was sixteen when this finally opened the floodgates.
You shouldn't judge Bob by other's standards. Love him or loathe him he's an icon.... .....and this is one of his best.
I've heard of this dude. Listen: It almost feels sacrilegious to rank this with any number below a 5. It kicks off with arguably the most ubiquitous, important song in rock and/or roll history. That opening snare shot alone, which Springsteen said sounded like "somebody'd kicked open the door to your mind", is enough to warrant a 5 rating. So I gave this entire album a few good listens, thinking it might confirm my off-the-cuff theory that it's overrated. I WANTED it to be overrated. But the thing is almost 60 years old now, and my word does it hold up. Even if it's not my favorite Dylan, it very well could be his best. I'm a bit disappointed to admit that it turns out this masterpiece by Dylan is indeed properly rated.
I honestly don't know how anyone cannot like this album, it's on par with anything with Beatles. Dylan completed his transition from pure folk to pop on this masterpiece that to this day is timeless. It takes a lot to Laugh, It takes a Train to Cry is very close to my favorite song ever written.
Classic Dylan.
Bob Dylan's 6th studio album and with rock musicians on 10 of the 11 tracks. He's gone electric which I guess was a big deal back in the day to some. Dylan was drained by touring and his current music; that's when he wrote "Like A Rolling Stone" which apparently changed his disposition and onward he went to make this landmark album. The title is named after the highway connecting his hometown, near Duluth, with the great musical heritage cities/areas of the south (St. Louis, Memphis, New Orleans, Mississippi Delta Blues Area). Connecting that reference, besides the first song, "Like A Rolling Stone," (maybe due to it being ingrained in my memory) and the last song (acoustic) "Desolation Row," this album really is a blues album to me. In fact, the songs kind of alternate up tempo and slower paced throughout. You can go a lot directions with highlights on this album: the music, the playing, the instruments used, the lyrics, etc., etc. The second song "Tombstone Blues" starts a fast- paced bluesy number with Dylan about contemporary Americans at the time and the Vietnam War. "Ballad of a Thin Man" is slower with piano and organ and lyrics about how being educated doesn't mean you know what's going on. The siren whistle says it all for "Highway 61 Revisted." "Desolation Row" concludes the album with a 11 minute long acoustic epic going all the place lyrically. He's obviously making political commentary. The album is consistently put among the best albums of all time. The one thing that stood out for me listening to it this time is how blues-oriented it is. That and being bookmarked by two classic songs does make for a great album.
A masterpiece. The lyricism is unmatched.
Genius - I think - or possibly just a great conman. I can never quite decide whether the lyrics are amazinglt insightful and prescient, or just randomly spouted lines. There are so many of them, they are bound to hit a target some of the time.I'll go with genius.
It's Dylan at maybe his best? At the very least this is up there with the rest of his works as one of the best. The lyrics are pointed and hit, and Bob Dylan's maybe the only person who could sing them and make them work. On top of that, the songs are just plain good. Good melody, good instrumentals, good everything. There's a reason why Dylan is/was as influential as he is/was, and it's on display perfectly with this album.
Bob Dylan continues to be a phenomenal storyteller throughout the album. He has some absolute hits in Desolation Row and Like a Rolling Stone.
May 2022, but edited in January 2025 HL: title track, "Like a Rolling Stone", "Desolation Row", "Ballad of a Thin Man", "Queen Jane Approximately" There's a growing collection of albums I promoted from a 4 to a 5 after the fact, but I wanted to add this begrudging personal note about Highway 61 from a recent visit: "It's a 5, if Time Out of Mind is a 4" In May 2022, this was the only Dylan I had heard in full, and I thought it somewhat overrated. Now that I've heard 6 albums from this guy (not counting Traveling Wilburys), I get how OP it is among Dylan albums and, indeed, the genre of folk rock. I still prefer Blonde on Blonde, bloated tracklist and all
This is a perfect album
It starts with Like A Rolling Stone and ends with Desolation Row so it cannot be anything but a 5.
I'm familiar with a lot of Bob Dylan's music and have listened to this album before, but never closely. This is an absolute classic for a reason. Every track is anywhere between really good (e.g., Tombstone Blues, It Takes a Lot to Laugh, From a Buick 6, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues) to absolutely classic (Like a Rolling Stone, Ballad of a Thin Man, Queen Jane Approximately, Highway 61 Revisited, Desolation Row). Pretty much a perfect album. Probably my only negative comment is that Desolation Row could be shorter - I don't mind long songs, but it's the exact same tune for over 11 minutes. That said, the lyrics are great, so in many ways it's just a long poem. I'd also say the siren whistle on Highway 61 is kind of dumb, but it's such a good song with such great lyrics, so who cares. Also, while I've said that Dylan's voice sometimes sounds like a parody of itself, I really liked his singing on this album. Again, an absolute classic and an easy 5.
Very familiar with this one already.
Some of the easiest listening you can find. It’s hard to complain about peak Dylan.
Arguably his best album (though it's hard to choose).
Arguably the definitive album where Dylan establishes himself as the master poet, the fact that he accompanies it with the raddest rock n roll sound ever heard only propels this album to unchartered heights.
Yeah man. This shit's in my DNA. I wanna live inside that emotive ramp up to when he sings "How does it feeeeeeeel?".
Classic
hihi, Dylan sa njegovim najboljim albumom, neko vrijeme mi je Blonde on Blonde bio, a možda se to zna izmjenjivati, svejedno, ovaj album je tako jak. It goes hard in the motherfucking paint!!!
I really really dig it
Greatness.
Dylan = Vinilo.
Overall, just a good album front to back. Seems easy to just put on and let the hour drift by listening to the stories, lyrics, guitar, and harmonica. Rolling stone: classic. Ballad of a Thin man: so unsure of what this is about.. I think about people who sleepwalk through life and are unaware of what's going on. There really is a lot of disdain for the mysterious Mister Jones though Just like Tom Thumb's Blues: Well, unfortunately, this line stood the test of time "Because the cops don't need you and man they expect the same." Desolation Row: I really liked the guitar in this song, it had such a nice spanish guitar vibe to it
The sun's not yellow, its chicken!
Books have been written about this album. It makes it very hard to say something interesting. You want my take? This is a document capturing a period of social and political history in the US of massive upheaval and a generational divide of such confusion and distance as to feel like foreign entities. Dylan moves from his folk past into a new rock sound and throws all the angst, distress, irony and idealism of youth into a cri du couer that is both humorous, memorable and moving. And whilst we might all spend days listening and analysing and disagreeing on the meaning of his poetry, no popular singer brought such depth to his music whilst also remaining listenable. And if the lyrics aren’t for you, check out the mood on Ballad of a Thin Man and Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues. This was an album of its time and an album for the ages.
I mean, yeah.
Oh here it is, this is the one. The one that made me love Bob Dylan, probably my personal favorite. So, this is the 5th Bob Dylan album I've been asked to review. Not everyone will feel the same way, but I think these albums really are the music everyone should hear before they die. Dylan is a once in a lifetime kind of artist. His sensibility, his humor, his attitude, his lyrical virtuosity, they're burned across the musical landscape. They exist in some way in pretty much every kind of music that followed him. I get that he’s a polarizing artist. I get that some people find him grating. It’s not always about sounding pretty. Sometimes the truth is in the flaws. The lyrics really are a kind of poetry – bitter and biting, reflective but unsentimental, cryptic and sometimes straight up hilarious. The way Dylan can flip from irreverent to profound without giving us all tonal whiplash is a true gift very few artists have. Musically, the songs are evocative and flow effortlessly throughout. Some are also pretty fun when Dylan wants them to be. This album takes you on a gorgeous, rollicking, absurdist odyssey like no other. If you don’t “get” Dylan after this one, keep trying. Hands down, “Like a Rolling Stone” is the best song on the album, and a strong candidate for best rock song ever. The other songs are varying shades of brilliant, and hard to rank. Fave Songs (All songs in order, from most to least favorite): Like a Rolling Stone; Queen Jane Approximately; It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry; Tombstone Blues; Highway 61 Revisited; Desolation Blues; Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues; Ballad of a Thin Man; From a Buick 6
Dylan at the height of his powers. One of his classic albums.
Just an all time classic… Dylan in his absolute pomp!
Absolute classic. One of 3 Dylan albums I consider my go-tos for him. All killer, no filler here.
Pleasant. Great lyrics. I liked it more as it went on. Harmonica I like in theory, but it practice it usually really hurt my ears.
Classic Dylan
Not Known At All, Maybe My Mother.
Highway 61 Revisited is a contender for Bob Dylan's greatest, and that is saying a lot. This is Dylan's first 'rock' album as it were, with Bringing it All Back Home having an acoustic half. The album is tinged with blues and country and runs the gamut from straightforward to experimental songs. Of course, this album is famous for what might be the greatest song ever recorded, 'Like a Rolling Stone.' The album is sprawling and far reaching in a way that only the greatest novels are.
It's one of the greatest lyricists at his peak.
I’m not sure how highly I should praise this album. It’s obviously a groundbreaking, legendary album that helped guide the course of rock history, but my style of listening to and enjoying music is to come to the albums in my collection with as much of a clear mind as I can. That is, I try not to bring meta considerations to my appreciation. I really can’t stand the “oh this is an important album” mindset. I don’t care if an album is important. I only care if I enjoy it. There are tons of “important” albums I either don’t care for or flat-out despise. So what about this gem? For it is a gem in my collection, no matter its place in rock history. It has such a strong beginning, of course, one that always leaves me stunned at how brutal it is, but for me, the closer is even stronger. “Desolation Row” is one of my favorite Dylan songs. Everything about it is beautifully ugly, and I find that paradox fascinating. And I love the little poetic flourishes that anchor the song as an image in my mind, like when Dylan sings, "Cinderella, she seems so easy, 'It takes one to know one,' she smiles, and puts her hands in her back pockets Bette Davis style." I also have a soft spot for sprawling, epic songs.
One of Bob Dylan's best, went electric on BIABH and only refined the sound on this album. Somehow only getting better by the time he released his next album only 1 year later
Hell yeah
4.5
5.0 + This record burns scorching hot. The lyrics on “Tombstone Blues” and “Ballad of a Thin Man” read like a surrealist masterpiece.
I've always loved Bruce Springsteen's take on 'Like A Rolling Stone,' of which he said "the snare drum that opens this song feels like someone kicked open the door to your mind." Yep. I can't really think of or write anything all that interesting about Bob Dylan or this album. I'll go with simple terms and state plainly that I view him as a literary treasure and this album is firmly established as one of the key works of art in my humble inner Pantheon. Now, back to the headphones to listen to this again with my eyes closed. I want to get the door to my mind kicked open.
A beautiful sound. A wonderful album. Can't knock it, love it all.
Ahh Bob Dylan, toujours un top du top, spécialement sur cet album. Blonde on Blonde est mon préféré mais celui est très près. 5
I have listened to all of Dylan's major works, but I'm so glad I re-listened. Took some time to get into, but this is brilliant. 4.5/5
Absolute beauty. I get more and more into Dylan as I get older it seesms
It's a masterpiece of Bobbles
A genuine classic album - some new Dylan sounds, but his heritage shines through as well.
How many 5 will I end up giving Dylan on this list! Damn his records just go straight to my heart. Don’t know why none of his records are in the top of this site. I know this songs were written and recorded more than 20 years prior to my birth, but I just hope I get the time to grow old with them and pass the time listening to my vinyls in a sun full room.
Good album, didn't know many tracks.
It’s been a while since my “Dylan phase” but this is start-to-finish brilliant and I should listen more often.
One of the best albums ever made. Ballad of a Thin Man hits fucking hard, and this album revolutionized lyrical complexity for popular music.
My favorite Dylan album and its not really close. One amazing song after another. What can you say about an album in which one of the most iconic songs of a generation is my least favorite on the album. The easiest 5 star rating so far.
Truly iconic and unique. Fantastic musician, fantastic album.
One of the best evever
9/10. really really good, my only criticism is that i think some of the tracks overstay their welcome, which is a problem i always have with Dylan
9/10. Like a Rolling Stone and Desolation Row are fantastic, the rest was largely enjoyable, but nothing stood out especially from the middle section. I think Blood on the Tracks was a little bit better, but I am not sure if it is a whole number score better or not.
The more I listen to Dylan the more he grows on me. Also this is just so ahead of its time. 10
perfect
Thank youuuuu Jesuit 2008-2009 times wow
An absolute classic in every sense. Incredible lyricism, banging instrumentation.
Timeless, beautiful. Perfect.
ahhhh good ol bobby d. i adore this album. desolation row is one of my favourite songs of all time. this album is everything i need it to be.
Il mio preferito di Bob
can't be arsed writing anything funny, this is one of my favourite albums.
Masterpiece. Not a song I didn’t enjoy
Kende dit album niet, maar helemaal goed!
I want this shirt thanks
Dylan en su conversion
If you could wear a CD out I would have worn this one out back in the 90s. It was so deep to me then. Still sounds good.
Damn good!
Lyrical genius and mighty fine accompanying tunes. He criticized the government in the most musical way possible. In this album the themes feel to be connected more to the common american person, but I feel there were some specific people in mind.
Nothing much to say, just a great album, lyrics with a message, great sound.
Classic album! So many great songs, such great lyrics. Goes by so quick too
Instant kitchen playlist material
One of the best albums ever.
I’ve listened to this album dozens of times and it never gets old
24/7
I love Bob Dylan.
thank you for giving us world peace, Bob Dylan
This is a good Bob. Fave Tracks: Like A Rolling Stone, Ballad of a Thin Man, Desolation Row 4.3/5
This is probably the only Dylan album where I actually like the entire album
He's one of the greats for a reason. Of course we could talk all day about his polarizing singing voice, but the songwriting and musicianship is there and it is outstanding.
Classic Dylan.
I thought this was great! I knew going in this album in particular is highly regarded and it lived up to the hype for me. First two tracks were highlights for me and set the tone of the record perfectly. Harmonica sounds great throughout as well as some smooth guitar work throughout. I actually quite like Dylan's vocals which added to the personality of the record for me. I feel like pretty much every track here earns the long run time and although with the caveat that Desolation Row goes a bit too long. That's really my only complaint though, I had a lovely time with this record.
rly nice album, would listen to it again but didnt have any real standout tracks for me, the harmonica is a great add on and the whole albums feels like a nice genre exploration between rocknroll, blues and bluesrock. HM: "like a rolling stone", "hw 61 revisited"
I opened my phone and went FUCK!!!! I skimmed a little last night and I didn’t hate it. I think listening to Lou Reed and Iggy Pop before this guy got me accustomed to the weird inflection he uses. Like a Rolling Stone was fine but I feel like we came back to the chorus like 10 times. I've had the album on in the background while I work.... I can't lie man I don't hate it. I kind of like it! the instrumentals are definitely the high point for me, they sound crisp and the band is on point. Oh god it's harmonica time.... I also don't hate the harmonica! (Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues). Oh shit there's the Beastie Boys sample!!! Gun to your head do you want to listen to Bob's voice, or Bob's harmonica? Shit man probably his voice. Why is this song 11 minutes long. I mean it's good but jesus Bob. Like a Rolling Stone - Great track from the band, cutting lyrics. How does it feel? Goes on maybe a little long. Ballad of a Thin Man has great lyrics and a great melody. The instrumental is a bit slow, but the organ and guitar really make it worthwhile. Ok actually I fucking love this song. Tombstone Blues doesn't do a lot for me; not a fan of the upbeat blues/rockabilly sound. Apparently this one is about Vietnam? I'll say this: His songwriting demands to be looked into. Not in an "oh he's being intentionally vague to come off as deep", but moreso wondering where the hell he's pulling these references from, and what they mean. "The geometry of innocent flesh on the bone/Causes Galileo's math book to get thrown/At Delilah who's sitting worthlessly alone/But the tears on her cheek are from laughter". Very interesting, even if I can't (or don't feel inclined) to figure it all out. I can't figure out what It Takes a Lot to Laugh is about. Something about a girl? The interpretations I'm getting don't make sense to me. Sounds okay, I'll have to go back to it. From a Buick 6 is fun; big fan of that organ again. If you blink you might miss it, but I think this song is about cheating (...and liking her better)! Not a favorite but the first one I skimmed through that piqued my interest. Back to Ballad of a Thin Man and wow I still love this song. Something is happening here, but you don't know what it is... I missed Queen Jane Approximately earlier! The instruments sound amazing, again, especially when they slowly fall into place in the intro. Love that sharp guitar strum that comes in every so often. Hard to tell if these songs (and Like a Rolling Stone) are like a "yeah well maybe come and give me a try" or if Dylan is just judging the shit out of people for being lame; I think this one is more the former, and Rolling Stone is more the latter. The drums fills are particularly nice. Highway 61 Revisited. Why the fuck is there a slide whistle. Another song like Tombstone Blues that doesn't do a lot for me musically, but has super interesting lyrics that make reference to these grand historical figures and vague events. Oh God said to Abraham, “Kill me a son” Abe says, “Man, you must be putting me on” God say, “No.” Abe say, “What?” God say, “You can do what you want Abe, but The next time you see me coming you better run” Well Abe says, “Where do you want this killing done?” God says, “Out on Highway 61” Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues - Love the electric guitar, love the driving piano and drums, Dylan is on point. I started out on burgundy But soon hit the harder stuff Everybody said they’d stand behind me When the game got rough But the joke was on me There was nobody even there to call my bluff I’m going back to New York City I do believe I’ve had enough I like that song. Desolation Row, from what I understand, is more typical of what Dylan did prior to this album. It's well crafted, and maybe a good change of pace.. but I quite liked the blues rock sound we had going on! Overall I'm pleasantly surprised. I've started to enjoy his voice, I just wish there was maybe some more satisfaction to figuring out his music. It seems that the vagueness is actually maybe a little intentional, and lends itself to making everything seem so *dense*, but is it? Favorite: Ballad of a Thin Man Least Favorite: Highway 61 Revisited Shoutout: Queen Jane Approximately, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues I'm going to give it a 7 and lean towards 4 stars. I'm sorry for doubting you Mr. Dylan; lucky for me, I've got 6 more albums to hate on before I finish this list.
I know a lot of people find it grating & flat, but I think Bob Dylan’s voice works on a lot of these songs. Brimming with feeling, great great storytelling, and solid songwriting. It’s a classic for a reason. Strong four. STAND-OUT SONG: “Like A Rolling Stone” HONORABLE MENTIONS: “Tombstone Blues”, “Ballad of a Thin Man”
I don't dislike Bob but I am glad to be reaching the end of his contributions to the list, and I think this is a good way to reach that milestone. It's enjoyably upbeat and fun with swinging blues numbers and great guitar work throughout. I still find his writing to be formulaic and predictable, and his voice borders on being just unpleasant to listen to, but you can't deny he has swagger and this album showcases it perfectly.
Amazing storytelling, type of album that you can sit and listen to whole 9 minute songs whilst doing nothing else. Instrument combo great too.
Owned. My favorite Dylan period
Love it. I find some songs a bit boring but creative songwriting. Bob Dylan Is such a legend
Omg! Killing me with Bob! Well it was going to happen. Might as well get it over with as quickly as possible… So back to back Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde I can say, definitively imao this is the FAR superior offering. Still have serious issues with Bob. But this… starts out so well with Like a Rolling Stone. It just doesn’t maintain that height. But hey, that’s gotta be one of the greatest songs of all time- yeah? So… 4 Boolean: True
Pretty good Dylan album. Great storytelling, upbeat bluesy music, and surprisingly audible lyrics.
he's really not all that bad at singing. 4.5
“Desolation Row” alone is worth the price of admission. There’s a lot to unpack here, and I barely scratched the surface, but the sound Dylan is carving out here between folk and electric is dynamic and durable.
Really dig this. Bob Dylan is a bit of a blind spot for me. I haven't explored his discogrpahy in-depth. I'm familiar with a lot of the "greatest hits" Love the storytelling and sound on this album.
clasicon
Hard to argue with a classic.
Pretty good album.
Truly some of Dylan's best songs, made even better by the support of a full band. Yet still, Dylan knocks it out of the park with the album's closing song, Desolation Row, proving that his songs still kill it, even without the band. Bonus point for his sick outfit on the cover.
Loved this-like a rolling stone, Bob keeps giving.
Judas! Road music at its best.
Welcome back Bob
4 stars for that slide whistle alone. Did I like it? I’m not sure. But I sure as hell respected it.
This is a great album…but I’ve been stingy with 5 stars and I don’t think it gets there for me. Blood on the Tracks will.
It is much better than The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan - much more structured, sounds better, pretty good thoug
Tombstone Blues was new to me, very good!
On the more rock & roll electric side, which I like more than the singer-songwriter minimal style. It's ok
Très bien, j'avoue à la fin la voix et l'harmonica me saoulent
I really like it … it’s great overall but it’d be disingenuous of me to give it a 5. Overall body of work is a 10/10 and I love him … but this album is very good. 4
He's good at painting a picture isn't he?
4 stars Ok, “Like a Rolling Stone” is an obvious and stereotypical choice for greatest song of all time. But when it kicks this album off, it makes sense. It fucking rocks. And the album is quite diverse. No 2 songs sound the same, despite Dylan’s very identifiable vocal cadence. Despite having such a long closing track of “Desolation Row,” the album doesn’t drag. I’ll say that it’s not an album I’m always in the mood for and some of the middle songs aren’t as memorable. But it’s one of those classic albums that meets the hype.
One of my favorite Dylan albums.
Another very good album. His songs are so unique, the band is great. A lot of blues. Every song is good and has something interesting.
3 + 1 for meeting notability guidelines
nostalgic
It’s a good album, but not exactly my style.
A classic for a reason. Enjoyed this a lot
bob dylan is one of those names i always hear about but i dont know if ive ever properly listened to him. they named the damn magazine after this album. i can definitely hear the bones of modern rock in this album, it feels like its in this weird transitory space between blues and rock to me, which does make sense considering. it feels just a little like slam poetry honestly even though the sound is a bit too country for me the lyrics rule. this guy is funny. holy shit is that an andalusian cadence i think im in love. WOW WOW WOW GOOD LYRICS. i need to get yester to listen to this song. oh highway 61 is fun sounds AND ITS CHRISTIAN??? sorry this is fun. "god said to abraham kill me a son" christ alive highlights: from a buick 6, ballad of a thin man, highway 61 revisited
Classic. Folk isn't a genre I usually like, but Dylan manages to make it feel interesting and exciting, both for the lyrics and the rhythm. I don't love all of it, but the high points make it remarkable af Highlights: Like a Rolling Stone (literally an anthem), Tombstone Blues (goes hard almost like a punk song), Ballad of a Thin Man (don't rly love it but I rly like how the lyrics are so involving, Dylan is a true poet on that) and Desolation Row (masterpiece)
Tremendo álbum y tremendas letras que demuestran el por qué Bob Dylan es el ídolo de ídolos.
Arranca con un temón mal, después highway 61 tmb temón y ballad of a thin man.
Top Picks 🌟 1- Like a Rolling Stone (histórico, sobrevalorado de todas formas) 2- Ballad of a Thin Man 3- Highway 61 revisited
9/10
The first time I've ever actually listened to a Bob Dylan album. It was pretty good, reminded me of Rubber Soul era Beatles in places and I thought ti sounded a bit more modern than it was, would have thought early 70's rather than 1965. Too many of the songs are too long though, I thought I must have been halwayf through the album by the time the third track finished. I would rather listen to 4 3-minute long songs that 1 11-minute one
Good lyrical melody, overall good album not much apse to say
Thursday May 21st, 2026. It was nice to listen to some Bob Dylan songs that are lesser known. Lyrically, he continues to be a master of his craft; however, a lot of the songs sound pretty similar to me. (I also am not a huge country fan.) I used to not be a huge fan of Bob Dylan's voice but honestly I like his singing a lot now. My favorite song of the album was Tombstone Blues. 7/10.
This will probably become a 5 later on, but fully processing and appreciating Bob Dylan lyrics in a day isn’t a task I have the focus for, so I’ll more than likely appreciate this album more as time goes by. It’s really easy for a man with Bob Dylan’s voice to not be cool, but a combination of the sick electric instrumentals in the back and amazing lyricism makes him so likable, and way cooler than you think he’d have the right to be. We really need a modern day Bob Dylan…
Great electric album from his bobness one of his top five which means some of best albums ever
One of his best.
You know, I was quite sure I was gonna give this a quick 3 or 4 stars and be done with it. Mostly because Dylan's voice usually doesn't really do it for me, but I wound up enjoying this a lot more than I thought I would; even his vocals. It's definitely a classic for a reason.
Love Dylan. Great album but there are a few songs I can’t really get into though. Still, great work of art.
I don't always listen to Dylan, but when I do... Wait. I rarely listen to Dylan. But, if I do (and sometimes I do) this is the album I choose. He's got some good grooves and some fine lyrics here. Also, I'm pretty sure From a Buick 6 inspired Yo La Tengo to write From a Motel 6, and that's a great fucking song, so there must be something to this Dylan guy.
Surprise! This was the first Dylan album I've ever listened to and I really liked it! Four stars. I thought he would be mumbling the whole time but that is not at all the case.
Good to listen to
good one!
Long songs, but touching lyrics, i like the country bar feeling aswell.

Lots of incredible songwriting in here, and I love the vocal performances. Definitely want to return to this and give it a better listen! Favorites: Like a Rolling Stone, From a Buick 6, Queen Jane Approximately, Desolation Row
Surprised to say I actually enjoyed this quite a bit. I didn’t really see myself as a Bob Dylan person from what I’d heard of his music. I was worried seeing the album closed on an 11 minute long track but it was one of my favourites. I listened to the My Chemical Romance cover a lot growing up, but when I tried to listen to the original back then I found it too long and slow. My opinion has definitely changed, although I still hear the MCR version even though it’s been years since I’ve heard it.
A really nice listen.
Not new to me
7.75/10 - Of the Bob Dylan albums I know, this is likely my 4th favorite. Just misses out on the podium, but similar to Bowie, Kendrick, Sabbath, and Radiohead Dylan’s 4th best album is most musicians best album. Ballad of a Thin Man is one of my favorite Dylan songs and is my favorite on the album.
Like a Rolling Stone deserves all the praise it gets, however, there are a bunch of really strong tracks here. Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues is underrated and Desolation Row could go for another 11 minutes and I wouldn't complain. Although it's not my favorite Bob Dylan album, it's a classic. 8/10
Dylan's transition from acoustic to electric. Pitchfork: 10.0 Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #18 Best Songs Like a Rolling Stone Queen Jane Approximately Highway 61 Revisited

I enjoyed this much more than I thought I would. Every song has a story in it, which is cool.
Heard it before. I haven't listened to it in full in a while but hearing the opening notes of Like a Rolling Stone just put me in the right mood. Genuinely lowkey forgot what a great album this is 4/5
Like a Rolling Stone is a great song, solid start to the album. The rest was decent. Bob Dylan’s voice can get a bit annoying at times but overall I enjoyed this album. It’s a 3.5, but feeling generous this morning. (4)
Legendary album, no question that this is great, but also it is very much Dylan. No surprises, just classic singer-songwriter stuff.
This is more the period of Bob Dylan I was expecting to run into on this list. I know this record was considered controversial in the scene as Dylan switched to the electric sound. I really enjoyed the record, and look forward to checking out more of the acoustic part as well!
The whole album has a pleasant mood.
Would’ve been a 5/5 if it was cover album
" Garçom, garçom! Me vê uma cantoria monotona com ritmos roquistas temperado por letras simbólicas de significado dúvidoso!" deus me perdoe por gostar desse album, não sei o que achei de bom, gostei de desolation row.
this my fav album from bob. i like how its less acoustic than his other stuff, its bit more exciting to listen to. and it doesn't take away his incredible songwriting
Well, it’s Bob Dylan; he’s not my favorite folk singer, but this album was pretty nice: melodic, fun, light. This is one of his better records in my opinion :)
Bob Dylan but less harmonica
Huge from T.C
The first time I've ever actually listened to a Bob Dylan album. It was pretty good, reminded me of Rubber Soul era Beatles in places and I thought ti sounded a bit moremodern than it was, would have thought early 70's rather than 1965. Going into this album I was quite skeptical as I never really connected musically with folk. Luckily I was surprised. Great songwriting paired with some interesting instrumentals really made it a nice journey. This record hovers between a 3/5 and a 4/5 for me.
From my first listen two years ago: Don't have much to say about it. Very against my current musical tastes Now: Bob, I'm slowly tolerating the harmonica... but I still don't like some specific drum beats (i.e. in Tombstone Blues, From A Buick 6) 😭. The bluesy/soul tracks are probably my "favourites". I think why Bob Dylan doesn't really click for me before because his early folk music was a vehicle for his poetry. This meant his reliance on verses were like "musical stanzas". That was totally out of my comfort zone, listening to someone sing in the same cadence and tone for 5+ minutes, especially since I don't really focus on the lyrics. But nevertheless I think this album might be the one I enjoyed the most from him. Personally, out of all the other Bob Dylan records, this was the one that was the most "catchy" and "soulful". It helps that the record is quite concise too. (3.5-4)
Overall muy bueno, bastantes temazos y no se hace pesado. El ritmo muy divertido. Las harmónicas a veces se pasan de volumen y Bob Dylan no es el cantante más indicado para escuchar seguido porque al final rayan sus letras.
It's good man
4.5 Man has a genius for spouting absolute nonsense but convincing you it must somehow be profound
lyrics make up for the severe lack of vocal range. all poets are douche bags anyways *shrugs*
60s folk rock. Incredibly influential. His first use of a rock band.
I’m more partial to The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, but Highway 61 Revisited is a great album in its own right
Big Dyl finally locked in with this album and actually made it good. It's much more "rocky" than the other album of his I got - great for me!
I was dreading listening to this album. I know where Bob Dylan stands for me: Respected but not fond of at all, but this record was a breath of fresh air and plesently unexpected, much more of a blusey feel but still with the typical Bob Dylan storytelling underneath. I actually might give it another listen at some point.
Like a Rolling Stone is a 10/10 song.
wow
He still can't sing, but I was feeling this one way more than the others. 4.
Don't really like Dylan, but this is probably one of his better albums. The start of his transition from boring folk to rock with gritty, rock sounds. I believe this was a groundbreaking, landmark album for rock. "Like A Rolling Stone" and "Desolation Row" are filled with poetic lyrics and symbolism. It's a complex album, but innovative in its own right. The blend of rock, blues and (date I say it) folk make timeless. Influential and mostly enjoyable.
Great Songs: Like A Rolling Stone, Highway 61 Revisited Good Songs: Tombstone Blues, It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry, From a Buick 6, Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues, Desolation Blues Mid Songs: Ballad of a Thin Man, Queen Jane Approximately, Bad Songs:
What really gets me is the thought that this was once mainstream music. How we've fallen.
Classic storytelling & harmonica. Favourite track: Tombstone Blues "Mamma's in the factory she ain't got no shoes, Daddy's in the alley he's looking for food".....🤗
It was okay, I think I've heard so much Bob Dylan before that I don't feel any excitement while listening.
That was a fun listen. Also nostalgic with dad’s love of all things Bob Dylan. Lots of great tunes, with a few weird ones mixed in.
Hell yes
This album was pretty good; every song had a nice sound to it.
4* carried almost entirely by Like A Rolling Stone and Desolation row
Second Dylan entry. Song lyrics were so moody and dark-ish to me. Fit my mood for today to a T. I liked the backup rock guitar, but got way over the harmonica that was everltesent. Dylan's voice somehow didn't grate so badly this album though. Saved a few. ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Surprisingly quite nice to lsiten too. I am not a fan of Dylan and my opinion is that thanks to his songwriting, the music is overrated. But here , maybe because we are familiar with rolling stones, etc... I liked what I heard.
Another album you put on and sounds like an instant classic. I was never into Bob Dylan when I was younger but now in the last half of my life I’m starting to get the appeal. The words and their delivery are definitely part of the enjoyment. I think the amount of words were probably too much for me to want to understand when I was younger but now I have more patience for it. I’m kind of into the idea now of checking out the rest of his discography.
milo has forced me to become accustomed
Nice!
Classic
It's really hard to listen to this in 2026 and give it an objective rating. I'm pretty confident that if I heard this when it first came out with fresh ears, I probably would be blown away by it. But I didn't. I came out a few years before I was even born, so I have spent 55 years of my life listening to this and all the rest of Dylan. Unfortunately, that makes me a little sick of it, and little jaded on Dylan overall. So I'll just stick with my subjective scoring and be a little generous with four stars. Normally four stars are reserved for something that I'd be happy to put on it at any time, but the truth is I really didn't even feel like listening to it right now. But I did, and it's good, and it deserves to be highly regarded.
i love da bob yupppp
I don't love Bob but this is Bob in his prime
Un grande album davvero, meriterebbe le 5*
I love Bob Dylan, but can agree with critics that a lot of the songs sounds the same, he definitely has a formula, none the less it’s one I appreciate
Easy my favorite Dylan record. This is one I might actually listen to again.
Ame la harmónica
Bob Dylan is a remarkable songwriter and poet. Every song in this album was chock full of history and literary references. The only thing I wasnt a fan of was the harmonica. It was grating in a couple of songs. Other than that, this is easily one of his best albums.
7.9/10
Listened in the car. First Dylan record from this project. Liked the stories a lot. Wish there was a little bit more musical variety but really enjoyed my time with it.
Subapex
And….. 9/10
It’s Bob Dylan! It’s Tim. It’s a voice that can’t be mistaken. He is truly one of a kind!
I liked this one as much as the last Bob Dylan one, I can’t remember what I gave it though. I especially loved the closing track, Desolation Row!
3.5 - Good
Man, this guy knows how to write music
Excelente
8/10
Eh
bob dylan kann nicht singen, das ist ein fakt, aber die lieder sind trotzdem gut, 60er geilheit
Amazing lyrics It’s weird tho, it’s kind of a thing you wouldn’t want day to day. More of like a book you read occasionally
I can absolutely see what pissed off sooooo many people about this album. 🙄
Chill rock and last one is a classic
Muy buen álbum. Desolation Row es un temazo
I think the nostalgia might be the only thing keeping this above 2 stars at this point.
Bob Dylan with a looney tunes whistle
This album is very much Bob Dylan just being Bob Dylan. Great song-writing, weird voice that somehow works with the style, and just a fun energy. I could really do without some of the added sound effects on the title track though.
Fantastic album. Will come back and edit later. Unfortunately the next day we had a better Bob Dylan album so had to change this one. Really enjoyable listen.
i didn‘t dislike this as much as i‘d have expected
This is some of the really good Bob Dylan.
great
Iconic—and deservedly so. “Like a Rolling Stone” is just the start.
I enjoyed this more than I expected I would especially Rolling Stone and It Takes a Lot. I want to score a 4 to encourage revisit. 4/5
better than the previous one, love like a rolling stone
Like a Rolling Stone // Ballad of a Thin Man // Queen Jane Approximately // 3.5/5
To raczej naciągnę 7.5/10. Ale to nic nie zmienia - i tak kocham Boba miłością wielką
amazing song writer
7/10
"Highway 61 Revisited" revisits the blues-folk of "Bringing It All Back Home". Fully electric, it is arguably as energetic as its predecessor but tighter, blues-rock focused production ensures a fuller, more fluid sound. Dylan's lyrical ability shines through many times, particularly in what is in my opinion his best track, "Desolation Row", which pairs canonical references with a deft guitar backing. Musically, however, the feels like it lacks inspiration in parts, particularly in his blues numbers. The length of some of the tracks further contribute to the slight sense of lethargy and monotony.
Sounds like my childhood
me llevé una grata sorpesa! siempre estuve un poco negado a bob dylan y me sorpendí
ya en vd no lo escuché pero conozco like a rolling stone y vi la película del chalamet. me lo guardé para escucharlo.
Great listen, the songwriting is famously good, the music is banging. I like bob’s singing for the most part but after a while it does wear on me,it’s very distinct, and better in short doses, in my experience.
That last song just kept going.
7/10 - bluesy & folky - interesting/weird, very imaginative lyrics Favs: Like a Rolling Stone, Tombstone Blues, Ballad of a Thin Man
Maybe my favorite Bob Dylan from the list so far. The album is a 3.5, but I will give it a 4 because I can see myself re-listening to it at some point in the future. The high energy songs were my favorites and I enjoyed the jovial storytelling.
Something Is Happening Here 1001 Albums Generator 231 (2/19/2026) Frank Zappa said of Like A Rolling Stone "when I heard 'Like a Rolling Stone', I wanted to quit the music business, because I felt: 'If this wins and it does what it's supposed to do, I don't need to do anything else ...' But it didn't do anything. It sold but nobody responded to it in the way that they should have". The song is a strange mix of vitriolic hatred and confused compassion towards "Miss Lonely" and the song seems to generally be aimed at those who Dylan perceived as phony. After his last album, Bringing It All Back Home, which was about half folk rock/half pure folk, Dylan decided he didn't want to be phony with Highway 61 Revisited, which is almost totally electric folk rock. I've never been a big fan of Dylan's bluesier side, so songs like Tombstone Blues, It Takes A Lot To Laugh, and the title track do nothing for me. But the highs on this album are so much better than Bringing It All Back Home. The aforementioned Like A Rolling Stone, the sultry, organ-laden Ballad of a Thin Man, the rockin Queen Jane Approximately, and the epic soft folk of Desolation Row all stand out. I've heard 4 Bob Dylan albums, and Highway 61 Revisited is my favorite. 4/5. Favs: Like A Rolling Stone Ballad of a Thin Man Queen Jane Approximately Least Fav: Tombstone Blues
Usually not a big fan of semi-speaking, semi-singing songs, but I really liked this album, the music worked beautifully with his semi-singing, quite versatile and fun.
Brilliant, Brilliant, Brilliant
Man can Bob Dylan write some great lyrics. His singing voice is...something but once it settles in it works so well for the music. Great album
I feel like if Bob Dylan made music and existed in his prime in the current generation, he’d still be popular. I wish there was a bit more variety in this album. I feel like his singing style is the same throughout every song here. There’s still some really good tunes on here though and it’s still a good vibe.
Maybe it's Stockholm Syndrome but I'm starting to come around on Dylan
Day 181 Highlights Like a rolling Stone Tombstone Blues Desolation Blues
As Dylan albums go, this is one of the best.
I understand why this is on the list and it is a great album but I believe it is slightly overrated.
sue me
Many have tried to imitate it, but his songwriting is really something special. It's not a "journey" in a traditional sense, more of a series of disconnected moments, but you're along for the ride all the same. Like a rolling stone is iconic but I also love Ballad of a Thin Man and Desolation Row.
Lyrical genius and amazing story telling, with authentic sound throughout created through a variety of methods.
At first I thought I wouldn't like the album, but it suprised me. Cool cover. Favorite songs: Tombstone Blues, Ballad of a Thin Man, Queen Jane Approximately, Highway 61 Revisited.
Burde hatt mer Acme siren.
Finally, a break from my string of 6 straight mid-70s albums. Yeah, we are going further back in time, but for a good reason. This is my first Dylan album, and it's a good one. I know a lot is said about Dylan's voice and perhaps it hasn't aged very well, but at this stage of his career it fits really well with the songs he has crafted. Like a Rolling Stone is obviously the highlight here, but I enjoyed Desolation Row quite a bit as well. In between, this record wasn't quite as great, but it still had a lot to offer. 4-stars.
It's bob init
Holy 10-minute song to end this thing...
classic album that features some iconic songwriting, but Bob Dylan isn't a very good singer
Although I didn't like some of the songs, I really loved others. 4+
Fouring in the wind
it's bobby d, what do u want me to say Will I listen to again: 85%
Exactly what I was in the mood for but when it got to the last track I kinda just wanted to go to bed
Iconic, monumental. Hard driving blues songs (mostly) but tend to blend together.
Listening to a man talk for 50 minutes with some great production.
Not my favourite Dylan (it was when i was 15 though). 9ish
Love Bob Dylan but the harmonica is getting on my nerves 1: Like a Rolling Stone 2: Queen Jane Approximately 3: Highway 61 Revisited
Dylan at his first peak. Favorite song: Ballad of a Thin Man
Oh great album! One of my favs of ol Bob!
A few classics on here. Nice to listen to, though I don't fully love Bob Dylan's voice all the time. I will say that I really enjoyed the textual content of this album, essential folk. Favorite song: Queen Jane Approximately
