Reviews (page 7 of 14)
Pretty good, some classic hits and lesser known song
After getting Sgt. Pepper and Revolver, I got my first pre-experimental Beatles record on this album journey. A Hard Day's Night has historical significance as the first album in which all the songs were original compositions, written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney. That fact alone gives it some historical significance in placing it on this list. It also helps that this album is a good romp. This early on in their career, John and Paul incorporated some of their personalities into their penned songs, usually through their insecurities on "I Should Have Known Better" and "You Can't Do That" as well as their desire for a more realized relationship on "Can't Buy Me Love" and "I'm Happy Just to Dance With You". Pair those words with solid guitar hooks and a tight rhythm section, and you've got a formula that works. I will say there is a small drag in the second half of the record between "I'll Cry Instead" and "When I Get Home" before the cowbell kicks in on "You Can't Do That". Not all of the songs could be bangers at this point. Also, it’s admittedly hard to judge this album compared to what comes later. As it stands, A Hard Day's Night is still a commendable effort and worthy of this list.

Solid early Beatles love songs.
Fabulous
“a hard day’s night” was a part of our marching band’s beatles medley so i liked it lmaooo. “if i fell” was good too!! not much to say other than i enjoyed this! 4/5.
Maybe too many samey love songs (is there even an exception to that label?) to take in at once but it's still loaded with great songs. I'm Just Happy To Dance With You remains irresistably spirited. And holy shit I forgot what a BANGEEEER Any Time At All is.
Not the best Beatles is still more memorable than a lot of what’s out there.
Classic early Beatles
This is jaunty and fun. Better than the other Beatles album so far. Plus it gets a little gay.
I still prefer mid to late era Beatles, but this is still fun.
A great album. They more than demonstrate their mastery at writing catchy sub three minute songs. Several timeless hits but they have so much more to come.
One of many albums in dad’s collection I grew up with, this one is pretty timeless. And while it would be easy to go 5-star on every Beatles album that makes this list, some albums can’t quite rise to the level of Rubber Soul and beyond. This is probably one of those. As the first full album of all originals, the songwriting for sure needs to be recognized, and there are some numbers that definitely show signs of the musical growth and creativity the band would soon be known for. A real enjoyable listen. 4.25/5.
Card carrying Beatlemaniac here, but none of the big songs here are among my fave. Obviously the Fab Four hadn’t 100% found their groove yet, but this is still a great album. Doesn’t quite reach 5 for me, and don’t even think I’m grading them on their own curve.
60s were a lil before my time but feels like this captured a moment while being timeless. Not quite 5 level for me but can’t argue with the song writing and musicianship. Also didn’t realize this is where Arnold got his terminator catch phrase.
This exercise was inevitably going to turn into a stack ranking of Beatles albums... putting the influence and cultural impact aside, this album doesn't hit as hard for me as the ones from Rubber Soul on. A couple huge hits but they don't take this to 5 land. Maybe it is just a little too sugary pop sounding for me. I dunno. A couple nuggets throughout hint at things to come (see: And I Love Her) make it an interesting listen. 3.75/5
Third album, so still early days. The Pop songs of yesteryear, all extremely short: I don’t think a single one of them even hits the 3-minute mark! Yet these are perfectly crafted gems. A terrific album.
First Beatles album and I really liked it.
Very 60’s Simple early Beatles tracks Fantastic ballads Love heavy themes Very different from later beatles
WORKING LIKE A DOGGG
I thought it was great, although I was surprised because I didn’t realize how good it would be.
Ah finally a Beatles album. Their first one with all original tunes. A sign of greater things to come.
If one wanted to write a pop song, just listen to this album on repeat about 100 times. Traditional and clever structures, progressions and melodies all that serve the song perfectly.
definitely a weaker beatles album but if you listen right after new boots and panties it's fucking gold
7/10 I am a Beatles appreciator, I will not slander them for being a little bit horny and sad https://youtu.be/YfBVNpiTKJ8?si=992jlN84VNHr6a98
Pretty great album
Probably the first great Beatles album; the first two are fine, but just collections of pop songs. This one is too, but these songs were written in a compressed time period and they sound like they belong together. It's also nice that this and Beatles for Sale both have tolerable stero mixes. I'm not going to write a review here- if someone likes the early Beatles, which I do, then there's not a bum track on this record- it's 30 minutes of sonic joy. I'm only withholding a fifth star b/c there are better Beatles albums to come....
This is a very good album. I'm a casual Beatles fan, meaning I won't seek them out, but I'm not likely to turn them off. I cannot take too much, like the satellite radio Beatles station. But this album contains enough diversity of songs to hold my interest. Unlike the Beatles hits album (One?) that I can't get through comfortably.
Tre- 4 H- 4 Blake- 5 average- 4.333
Beatles Beatles Beatles
Quelle énergie juvénile! Hit après hit après hit.
The album that showed the Beatles are here to stay, thanks to excellent song-writing (no covers) and peak energy out of the Fab Four.
Even though I know it to be true, it always strikes me how much their music changes in such a short period of time. How is this only 3 years before Sgt Peppers? The classics are great but the rest feel like failed attempts to make hit singles. Reminds me of a Michael Jackson album. Waffling between a 3 and a 4 but I don’t think I can rate an album with can’t buy me love and hard days night a 3
4.0 Simple themes, and great melodies.
Heel rauw voor de jaren 60, maar wel een aantal echt goede nummers
I've never listened to this over-60-year-old album and yet of 13 tracks, only 4 had I never heard before. That shows the legacy of the Beatles (maybe overated?) and this isn't even one of their most 'popular' albums. I'm trying not to fawn all over this just because it's them, but of the tracks I didn't know, Any Time At All is a 5, I'll Cry Instead is very 'Beatles' and only When I Get Home and Tell Me Why fail to hit the mark with me. The rest of the tracks I knew before are all bangers however many time I have heard them throughout my life. Considering this is such an early album (3rd?) that's quite good going.
A very good album in my opinion! Probably their best work before Rubber Soul. I really enjoyed the A-side more than the B-side, but overall a good album. :) Of course, I have heard this one before but it was a nice to listen to it again after three months.
Great album.
8/10. The Beatles were a great band! :)
I'm a bit torn on this album. It's certainly iconic--the first Beatles album that is all original and the first where we start getting a sense of Lennon and McCartney as songwriters individually. The classics are great and some of the other songs swing, but this is clearly before they have supreme confidence. I think I would go 3.5, but bumping for relevance.
High energy, good guide, easy listening
Timeless. Little repetitive, but short and sweet and timeless.
Absolute classic. Bumped up to a 4 on subsequent relistens.
This was my first Beatles album I've listened to back to back and I'm quiet impressed. I found myself humming or singing along to quite a few tracks. What a great experience.
Im really more of a fan of the post Rubber Soul Beatles. That being said I am still a huge fan, and I can really appreciate this one as well.
Int nära på det mest intressanta Beatles har att bjuda på. Men trotts det är det här ett jätte bra album. Bandets talang syns redan. Perfekta pop låtar en efter en
3.75
Oh yeah baby now we're talkin
You know I like a lot of the weird shit, but they were also REALLY good at making straight forward bops before that.
84% Best: A Hard Day’s Night; And I Love Her; Can’t Buy Me Love; You Can’t Do That Must-Hear? Sure. Every album pre-A Hard Day’s Night, aside from the hit singles, feel lackluster. A Hard Day’s Night is the first solid Beatles album experience.
++: A Hard Day's Night, I'm Happy Just to Dance with You, And I Love Her, Tell Me Why, Can't Buy Me Love, Things We Said Today, When I Get Home, You Can't Do That, I'll Be Back +: I Should Have Known Better, Any Time at All, I'll Cry Instead +-: If I Fell 8,2/10
This is the first Beatles album I remember owning. In my opinion, this album/movie is first true "POP" album.
I don’t know why I was surprised to see a pre-Rubber Soul album on this list. I think I was hoping for the big stuff, you know. Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper or anything like that. Don’t get me wrong, pre-Rubber Soul Beatles is still great. I just like later Beatles better. Coldest take in the universe, I know. Anyway, I think it’s between this and Help! that I believe are the best albums from the Beatlemania era. There are the classics, like the title track, Can’t Buy Me Love, and And I Love Her. Then there are the lesser know songs, which are mostly pretty good. I mean, I didn’t really care for the country-ish I’ll Cry Instead and some of the songs structurally feel similar. But even in their early stages, the Beatles had an energy that made them stand out. With songs that fly under three minutes, it’s comes hit after hit. It helps that this is the first album with all original songs, which feels like a rarity for 60’s albums. At the very least, it’s a stepping stone that would eventually led to the legendary later efforts of the band. But as it is, it wouldn’t be fair to sleep on the earlier albums like this. Favorite track: A Hard Day’s Night Other hits: Can’t Buy Me Love, If I Fell, And I Love Her, I Should Have Known Better, I’ll Be Back, When I Get Home
I much prefer their later work , but they were really cooking with this one.
solid early beats 8/10
Overall: 8/10 It took way too long to get to my first Beatles album. I don't care if it's cliché to say this but The Beatles are my favourite band of all time and this was their first really great album. It's not hard to imagine how they became the biggest band in history when listening to this, John and Paul are so charismatic and dominate (especially John). I'm probably gonna watch the movie tonight as well, I love the clean old man and the sad Ringo scenes so much. Fav Song: And I Love Her Least Fav Song: I'm Happy Just to Dance With You (Sorry, George)
One of the better Beatles albums this one, with the lads still in their moptop era. The title track makes for a cracking start, which then leads to a succession of balllads which are all highly listenable. Can't Buy Me Love gets back to the pop-rock side, before we get back to the ballads, Things We Said Today standing out there. Those loveable cheeky scallies are hitting their songwriting stride here and it can only presage good things... (massive foreshadowing; look to camera)
Anything by the Beatles that I rate under a 5 is a case of their being graded on a curve. Even if you don't factor in the fact that they were working with 4-track recording capabilities for the majority of their records, the creativity these guys exhibited from a production/arrangement/recording angle is mind-boggling. Then there are the harmonies and chords. Everything they did was exceptional, and the more you dig the deeper the genius. BUT... it doesn't change the fact that these early songs just don't tickle my musical fancy the same way the latter half of their catalog does. As groundbreaking as this (and every) album is, they're singing about girls, and that's pretty much it. That's all fine for the times, I just want a little more grit.
I know this is often considered their first masterpiece, but it's my least favorite of their first four albums. There are certainly six or seven all-time classics on here. And man, the greats are ridiculously great: The chords on If I Fell; the three different bridges on You Can't Do That; the infectious joy of the title track; John rhythm guitar on I'm Happy Just to Dance with You; etc. etc. But side two has some filler. It feels weird giving any Beatles album less than a 5, but if I'm being honest with myself, I just don't love this one.
Great album
overall pretty solid with some classics on there. I think some of the later albums are obviously way better.
This is a decent Beatles album
Funny to think the Beatles essentially started as a boy band.
Lovely.
This is the first GREAT Beatles album in my opinion. Like the rest of the planet, I prefer the later Beatles albums more than the early albums but I still think there is a place for their more poppy music. Its more simple than the later stuff but I find it charming in a way similar to other music from the early 60s. This album is loaded with classic tunes and on top of that its nice and short. A real easy listen! Also the film that accompanies this album is really fun! Favorite track: And I Love Her
Never actually sat down and listened to this before. Started my Beatles journey from Rubber Soul onwards. Amazing of course. Straight pop songs to the head. Highlights include "A Hard Day's Night" "I Should Have Known Better" "I'm Happy Just To Dance With You" "Tell Me Why" "Can't Buy Me Love" "Any Time At All"
Quaint, quirky, quick. Quintessential.
So simple and romantic in a pretty irresistible way. If The Beatles have no fans then I am dead (hold on I’m just now hearing that they have a lot of fans….)
First off rip nick who died today :( i’ll miss him a lot. Second off the music is fast and fun and thats just a winning combo for me. Songs about love are so comforting! And all these tracks are about love!
Nice, I'd already listened to it before. Really enjoyed some songs.
Geluisterd in de trein terug naar Nederland. Echt een banger en 1 van de eerste platen van de beatles waar echt geëxperimenteerd wordt
All I can think of is the word "uplifting". Also, cowbells!
Super interesting to list to this after Abbey Road and see the growth that happened. Bunch of these songs slap tho.
Unbelievable song craft and just such tight songs. I don't know that I had ever heard I'll Be Back before, but that song is excellent.
I’m honestly sort of unfamiliar with the Beatles’ early albums, at least as an album experience. I’d consider myself a Beatles fan, though I was always moreso infatuated with the “latter era experimental studio Beatles” than I was “fun boy band at the top of the world Beatles”. That said, this one’s pretty good! It’s got a great selection of tracks, pretty much every one excellent and fun, and even if I haven’t heard them for years and certainly not as much as the others, you bet your ass I was singing along. At 34 minutes, it’s a breezy album and the songs never overstay their welcome. I give it a 4, it’s just a very good listen.
Love it.
Surprised myself with just how much I liked this album. I'm no avid fan of the Beatles, but by giving their albums a fresh and attentive listen, I might just begin to like them. Short-sweet-catchy and wraps up in 30 minutes. What's not to like?
I prefer the later stuff.
Possibly the best of the Beatles’ early work. Features all time great tracks like ‘Hard Days Night’ & ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’ as well as some lesser known greats like ‘I Should Have Known Better’. 4.5⭐️ (because their later work is even better)
It's the beatles
Here comes their songwriting. Most songs are great and well recorded. All songs are corny 4.3
100% agree with Sean and Bryan. Rather listen to a later album like Abbey Road but still some absolute classics.
3.5, rounding up because it’s The Beatles.
A Hard Day’s Night feels like the first proper Beatles album right from that first crazy chord. This album is almost non-stop hits (could probably say that about most Beatles albums but maybe it hits especially hard after the first 2 albums) and is probably the first of their early ones I’d reach for. I’m remembering how often I played this record as a little kid. Getting rid of the cover tunes and moving quickly towards a pop-rock style was massive. I'll still vastly prefer their soon-to-arrive experimental weird-shit era which changed everything, but this was a big step forward and judging strictly in the time-frame/era there was of course nothing like it and them. 8/10 4 stars.
Solid early Beatles, definitely my favorite album from this era.
Never been into this one as much as I felt like I should be, one of my least favorites of theirs. Though that means it doesn’t feel quite as overplayed as the other Beatles albums do to me, which is a plus. I’m more into the harder rocking stuff on some of the other early albums, (e.g. Twist & Shout, I Saw Her Standing There, It won’t Be Long) and less of a fan of the pure bubblegum songwriting on display here. OTOH I can’t deny that it’s totally excellent bubblegum
Hard days night 8/10 I should have known better 7/10 If I fell 10/10 I'm happy just to dance with you 8/10 And I love her 10/10 Tell me why 10/10 Can't buy me love 9/10 Anytime at all 7/10 Things we said today 5/10 When I get home 8/10 You can't do that 10/10 I'll be back 9/10 Overall 9/10
It's the Beatles. Enough said.
In the pecking order of Beatles albums it’s probably in the bottom third but it’s still a Beatles album and therefore amazing. A bit Lennon heavy for my liking, Harrison has one song he didn’t even write, but no covers on here. Hard Days Night and Can’t Buy Me Love are top tier Beatles, special mention to If I Fell and And I Love Her. Not quite 5 stars but it’s a high 4. The film is a good way to listen to these songs, a lot of silliness 4.5/5
I always struggle rating early Beatles. It’s hard not to think it’s derivative until you realise it’s everything else that’s influence by it. Either way great album with some standouts
This a charming record with a lot of fun songs. Not as ambitious as their later albums.
I’ve listened to this album many times
Early Beatles are enjoyable, well done songs with just vocals and four instruments, and this is an album of fundamentally good songs. It works.
Pure pop, bright and sparkling and hopeful, retaining just a touch of grit and offerings tantalizing suggestions (e.g., "Things We Said Today") of the expansive brilliance just around the corner. Plus, an absolute all-time album opening – George's note is a chime, an auditory milestone, signals of freshness, new eras, etc. (Bookended perhaps by the coda closing of "Layla"). The movie is a pleasure, too, and not even really a guilty one.
Its good like a high 4 but I think it suffers a little from all the songs being roughly the same topic. This is the album that you'd play when people have already listened to the more popular beatles albums as like the final masterpiece to the 'early' Beatles
It's more like a 4.5 with And I Love Her & I'll Be Back. The rest of the album is solid but not spectacular.
The first, proper, all-Beatles Beatles album. Absolutely churning them out - the third album in the less than a year? Something lke that. It's not their best, but still manages to have 2 or 3 absolute monster hits. It still boggle my mind how they managed to do all of this and tour almost non-stop. The best to ever do it.
No será lo mejor de los Beatles, pero es lo mejor mejorsito pre Rubber Soul, muy divertido
Bunch of Beatles classics, but not as fluid of their other albums.
I liked it.
A bunch of Beatles songs that were new to me, I enjoyed this a bunch. I had a Byrds album yesterday, and the energy and quality of the Beatles really puts most of their contemporaries to shame. Far from their best, there are still some standouts. Namely, And I Love Her is incredible. It's easy to take pop for granted, but the deeper in this list I get, the more I appreciate some of the juggernauts.
Sigue siendo beatles album pero hay mejores
Lot of fun, pretty much what I expected but overall more consistently good than I thought it'd be
Love this album and love The Beatles but I gave The White Album 5 and while good this isn’t on that level so it’s a 4 but a high 4.
If this came out of the blue from a different band I had never heard of, it’s hard to tell what I’d give it. It’s really good. Would it be 5 stars in that context? It’s hard to be objective. But, this suffers from the impossible task of being compared to The Beatles’ later work, which blows this album away. So, this is a 4 because it’s not as good as Abbey Road. Even though it might be as good or better than some albums I’ve already given 5 stars to.
This was as far as the Beatles could go with their original vibe and sound. Beatlemania firing on all cylinders, Lennon and McCartney seemingly unable to put a foot wrong at this point in their songwriting, with Harrison and Starr bringing their A game too. You forget how many great songs the Beatles did until you listen to an album and remember all the ones that don't get played on the radio or spotify mixes. They could honestly write hooks and melodies in their sleep, and George's 12 string riffs inspired so many other bands, it's ridiculous. Ultimately I can't personally give it a 5 because it doesn't have a George Harrison song. That probably sounds weird, but it's a band of 4 people, not a band of 2 and 2. Also, it gets a bit samey in mood. But still, treat the rating like an honorary 5. I'm just being arbitrary (and just happy to dance with you). Tangent: The film's pretty great too, with the guy who played Albert Steptoe stealing the show as Paul's grandfather. Favourite Song: If I fell Least Favourite: I'll Cry Instead
Peak Beatlemania in sound, image, and ubiquity.
Nice record! Songs are a bit samey but there's still a couple of great hits in this. 3.5/4
early poppy Beatles sure is fun, not much of the more introspective from later in their careers, but damn if I didnt enjoy the heck out of this album.
Not their best but still very enjoyable pop music
I love every Beatles album forever and ever.
Clásico instantáneo, que te golpea desde la primera canción con un explosivo acorde. De mis preferidos de la época prepsicodélicos del grupo, con algunas falencias aquí y allá, pero sigue siendo el álbum que es. Canciones a destacar: And I Love Her A Hard Day's Night Can't Buy Me Love If I Fell Any Time at All I Should Have Known Better Tell Me Why
Typischer Beatles-Sound. Ein paar bekannte Songs, der Rest gut hörbar. 4/5
Very well-performed, with a few flashes of genius songwriting, but also a lot of mindless poppy boy-band lyrics with simple arrangements.
These guys eh
Have always liked this album. Not one of their best and was made for their film so I don't think people really rate it. I'm happy just to dance with you is one of my favourite songs.
# Playlist track - Can't Buy Me Love # Notes - It's cool that they've crammed 13 tracks in 30 minutes. No beating around the bush here. - Listening to something like this in the 2020s it's hard to imagine how different that sounded way back then. It has been so impactful that we're all kind of used to the sound, anyway. - Early Beatles were FUN. That's what this album is. - Definitely recommend!
„A Hard Days Night“ & „Can‘t Buy Me Love“ sind tolle Songs. Der hidden Star „Things We Said Tonight“ ist toll gelungen und das Album lädt zum Wiederhören ein. Leider ist der Rest der Songs eher Füllwerk ohne außergewöhnliche Elemente. Nach 339 Alben mein erster Beatles Tag. Es gibt noch Luft nach oben.
Its the beatles innit. All of it is gold. Do you compare this to their later work and mark it below, or compare it to the rest of recorded music in which case its top tier?
The Beatles! Need I say more? Not my personal favourite album but still some great tracks!
Première face (utilisée pour le film) très efficace, les excellents titres s'enchaînent (“Hard Day’s Night”, “Tell me why”, “Can’t buy me love”), certains moins connus (“I should have known better”, “If I fell”, “I’m happy just to dance with you”) mais qui sonnent immédiatement comme des classiques.
Commodified love songs, all under 3 minutes, and made to order for mass consumption by hysterical Beatlemaniacs. These guys created the formula for modern pop music.
My least favorite Beatles album so far. Still fantastic
A jolly listen all throughout, but I feel it started a bit too strong
Maybe the best of the early Beatles albums. Certainly notable for being the first with all originals. Sounds somewhat rudimentary now, even a little cutesy at times, but still loveable.
For someone who's not the biggest Beatles enjoyer, still very solid 3.5?
I like cheesy Beatles songs so it’s an easy 4
Easy to enjoy and listen to. Very pleasant.
I've always enjoyed A Hard Days Night, its properly my 3rd favorite Beatles album. It's just good toe tapper to listen to for half an hour.
My least favorite Beatles album so far. Still fantastic
Another pretty strong Beatles album. Maybe their closest to five stars until now! "A Hard Day's Night", "I Should Have Known Better", "Can't Buy Me Love", "Things We Said Today" plus some filler. 4,5
Some Beatles classics and good fillers
I was fully expecting to pan this as I have never seen the appeal of the Beatles. That said, I was pleasantly surprised. I was instantly transported to the 60s despite not having lived then.
I gotta admit I haven't heard of this Beatles record before which is surprising considering how much fun I had with it. Some of those songs are definitely gonna stay in my rotation for a while.
Enjoyed the album overall. I don't think it was their best work though. But good overall. 4.3/5
Definitely one of the better Beatles' albums. No weird experimenting. Solid songs.
Title track is instant nostalgia to being 20 and working 3rd shift.
Considering the time when it came out, it is obviously a breakthrough album for the band . From distance of 50 years, it really aged well.
This is a great album, I hadn’t heard a lot of the songs and found a few new favorites.
Pretty decent Beetles album. And I Love Her is so good!
What a great album. Not perfect but, separate from it being a Beatles album, it's well built. The tunes are catchy and varied. I do not like the Beatles in general but I have to hand it to them, my toes tapped a few times.
I had no idea this was a soundtrack for a movie with the exact same title. That said, it’s a decent album with a lot of Beatles tracks you’ve probably heard a hundred times. Other than that, there’s not much I can say about this album that hasn’t already been said over the last 60 years.
Great album...only complaint is that it doesn't have the variety and complexity of some of the later Beatles albums. It still amazes me how prolific they were in such a short period of time...
Never listened to this album, but have heard many of the songs of course. Hard to have perspective on something like this that is so foundational. A number of true classics. But if I judge it as I listen to it today, I can only give it a (strong) 4. "Until then I'll cry instead"
I enjoy this era of the Beatles. They are over their Twist and Shout days and are moving into more iconic territory. This 30 minute ripper was solid. Any longer than that and I would definitely rate it lower.
Not one of my favorite Beatles records, but still pretty great.
This album made me rethink the way I perceive the Beatles. Before, I thought they were just some pop rock band from a long time ago that everyone overhyped. It's now that I realize the Beatles were quite something. I am most definitely late to come to this realization, but I don't care.
Look, The Beatles are almost always gonna be p solid ^^; this ain’t my favorite album, buuuuut it’s still generally p great.
pretty great, pretty short too. how many songs even make it past 3 minutes? crazy stuff.
I’ve listened to the later albums so much that it’s always interesting to hear the earlier stuff. I don’t think I’ve closely listened to this album top to bottom before 1. A hard days night A classic 2. I should have known better. This song is a good example of the simplicity of their music at this time. The experimental stuff nowhere to be found 3. If I fell Beautiful melodies and harmonies Love the chord progression. Keeps you on your toes. 4. I’m happy just to dance with you intro guitar tone fire. The love songs of this Beatles era feel more boy band-ish. Mainly lyrically 5. And I love her Vocal production is great Guitar riff is so memorable Nylon (or whatever) guitar sound and melody is beautiful. Simple solo that lets you breathe for a second 6. Tell me why These harmonies and the style feel super duper 60’s. Less distinctively Beatles. But it’s a great song 7. Can’t buy me love Such a simple song but the conceptual approach is interesting and hooky. These songs are so short and seeet 8. Any time at all Gritty voice. Less than 2 minutes 9. I’ll cry instead 10. Things we said today I like the structure and melody more than the lyrics 11. When I get home This album does have a pretty distinct sound. I think hard days night when a bunch of these start (since that’s the song I know best from this record) 12. You can’t do that Nice guitar solo before bridge. A very good song but grabs me less than some of the others on the album. Again the lyrics are fine (you can’t do that is a great memorable line though) 13. I’ll be back Love how it starts The chord progression is beautiful. Very Beatles. Keeps you on your toes and you’re not sure where it’ll resolve and makes each part feel interesting even when you’ve heard it already Overall I love this album. It’s not as flawless as some of the later ones but of course not is this is the first album where they’re writing all the songs. Interesting that as time goes on their lyrics also get more absurd. Seems like they mostly didn’t take themselves too seriously lyrically even later. Feels like following what feels right is how they created
Fun, catchy Beatles
Fun early Beatles
I have a lot of nostalgia here, from playing my parents' Beatles 45s as a kid. This isn't my favourite era of their career, but it's still a ton of fun. I'm still not sure that anyone does pop rock better.
4/5 GREAT
Great energy. A few great songs but overall not my favorite of the Beatles albums.
Great album, and wonderful representation of the early Beatles. Not as thought provoking, deep or Duffy as their later stuff, the pop hooks are still here in abundance.
A classic
Solid 60s British Invasion rock, very influential obviously
Love the Beatles. Great album.
Its the beatles and a Hard Days night. It is something we have all heard a thousand times and know. It doesn't blow you away because it is so familiar. A few songs are less familiar but still solid. I am more partial to later experimental beatles compared to this jangly pop era, but still a standout album
****A good album
p66. 1964. 4.5 stars. Loveable moptops set the gold standard for early Brit 60's pop. It's packed with classics and standards. Half a point deducted for the one filler ("When I Get Home"), but other than that it's home runs all the way.
It’s the Beatles. What more can you say.
I didn't have as much fun with it as thought I should have had.
Classic early Beatles what's not to like: Stand out tracks: - A hard day's night - Tell me why - Can't buy me love - Things we said today - You can't do that
it's a great album - nothing too much to say, also cuz i sort of zoned when i was listening and just vibing to the beatles sound.
I liked it a lot more than I thought I would
It's crazy to think this record is 60 years old. I love the title track and I always think about that first note they play on it and how it is pretty difficult to recreate. This beatles record is just fun pop rock songs. It's pretty enjoyable.
Man, this album actually rips. I'm definitely in the camp of people that says things like "I prefer later Beatles to early Beatles." But honestly, this album is so rad. It's groovy, it's flowy, it's fun and actually really varied in sounds. No two songs are really the same. Outside of the fact, that most of the songs are about love / break ups, etc. But.. I love how some songs have that skiffle English folk sound, but others are more blues, r&b inspired or rockabilly inspired. You can definitely hear the roots and progression of this band and what they would eventually become. They really are so tight and methodical in their sound.
Yes, I’m going to commit the cardinal sin of Beatles evaluation and rate this album higher than Sgt. Pepper. This is just a masterclass in quality pop songwriting (mostly from Lennon, despite him being my least favourite of the fab 4). Whereas people point to their last three albums as landmark musical recordings, they are ironically far more dated in almost every aspect than the early stuff. “Hard Days Night” is a template that is still used today, and not some curiosity for studio production that only wanker audiophiles really care about (I’m looking at you, White Album). I don’t give a fuck about the spiritual sojourns through late 60s psychedelic drugs they would later go on, they were better when they didn’t think they were bigger than Jesus. And this album shows it.
Always worth a listen
The Beatles are the best band ever. Hot take, I know. But I do think they deserve the title, if nothing else, because they were such a force of evolution for rock n’ roll. This album was lovely, as pretty much any Beatles album would be. I definitely prefer their later albums, but this one had “And I Love Her” and “Can’t Buy Me Love,” and got more interesting as the album went on, which was cool. I’ll revisit it someday.
Absolute classic of a record. This one is short and sweet and that is part of what makes it so great. Quick collection of hits from this crew. Always a fun listen.
I’m a huge Beatles’ fan, so it will be rare to see me rate any of their albums beneath a 4 out of 5. But this one I would probably put at a 3.75. And that’s just because there are maybe three tracks or so not as great as the others. If you are a fan of the Beatles’ earlier work, than this album is for you. This album is the peak of their earlier work in my opinion. That being the really early years. The reason I give it 3.75 to 4 stars is because as often is the case with their albums both the chord progressions and the melody writing is second to none. Also, at the time, they really were inventing some of the sounds and ideas that would make its way into music moving forward. Lyrically it showed their propensity for writing real life lyrics. It’s just an overall great album with two number one hits, A Hard Day’s Night and Can’t Buy Me Love.
Always funny to open an album and already have every song liked or added to a playlist. However, not the best Beatles album.
This was a banger as usual. Some of the songs sound pretty similar though.
Quite good, very chill
It's pretty good, not their best work obviously, but still enjoyable
I was thrilled to get another Beatles album so soon. I however was a little put out that this album is on the list instead of Help. I have to say though I truly forgot how good this album is. It's probably been close to 15 years since I listened to this end to end. Some of these I think just have grown on me as my music taste has grown. This is definitely still very "bubble gum" pop Beatles. I can kinda understand why my dad always hated that era of the Beatles, but I kinda also love it a lot too. I think it's some of the best of the "bubblegum pop" of that era but it's a genre that is hit and miss with me. A bit unsure if this deserves a 5 in comparison to other Beatles albums, but it's still good stuff. I think this most accurately sits at 4 for me.
I think that's the best Beatles got into writing pop rock, most tracks stuck into head AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH MARRY ME JOHN AND PAUL AND GEORGE AND MAYBE RINGO/10
at least this time its not disrupting the chronology of my slowly ongoing beatles revisits! i have acquired plenty of hot takes during this project about the band's (incredibly fruitful) early period, the hottest of which is a deep appreciation for beatles for sale as not just my fave of these early albums in terms of material but also the secret forgotten Great Leap in the band's diversity and ambition. with this leap in appreciation comes a Slight loss of magic for the much more beloved two records on either side of it. not super much mind you, theyre still great, but come across as more treading water than Advancements in the overall trajectory of the band. what that does mean is that esp in the case of this one, theyve settled very snuggly into their songcraft and a lot of the tracks do blur together for me (esp considering how much i like these early beatles albums and Can tell the songs apart lol), but it also means theyre working at a very very high floor of quality. and i dont wanna oversell the monotony anyway...theres some surprise bitter tones among the bubblegum here, as well as just a lot of great individual musical ideas with weird chord changes and little moments of subtle arrangement genius (if u didnt know, the secret to the famous opening chord is Theres A Piano In There). v good material from the world's favorite above average pop band.
An amazing album from their incredible catalogue. Not one that I listen to often but love just the same
This album is way better than I remember. I thought it was just okay, like a lot of their other early albums, but it’s actually very catchy and good.
This is just a good solid album. The songs still sound good. I think it is an underated album by the Beatles
Always a good one. Don’t think it’s their best though. I expect to see a few more on this list.
Harmonies were excellent. Boy bandish though.
6,76
Not their best, but they don’t make bad songs.
Third Beatles in two months, second this month. Really enjoyed it, not that I expected not to. Great hooks and some big hits included. Short and to the point songs with great instrument playing and flow. I don’t usually say this but some songs could’ve been a bit longer. Highlights: A Hard Day’s Night Can’t Buy Me Love I’ll Cry Instead You Can’t Do That
great classic, but i may be biased, ive loved the beatles for a while
Some small obscure British boy band, I'm sure they won't amount to much
Good tunes
An exceptionally quick listen. I like their old stuff like this
Can’t complain really, you rarely go wrong when listening to the Beatles
Loved this - been getting into the Beatles recently but i’ve been listening mostly to their last few albums. This was a fantastic throwback - and I can hear the foundations of a lot of modern music in it. Loved it.
Crazy how well they hold up
What can I say about The Beatles that lot's of people have said a lot better than I am capable of? One of the bands I really like but not love.
A good solid outing from the Beatles- some classic tunes
stand outs / Good tracks - hard days night, should have known better, and i love her, cant buy me love. Overall a good album. Some classic early beatles tracks. Other half of the album is not so strong but this is them just getting started.
Há uma versão remasterizada do álbum no Spotify
it’s the Beatles
The only way the Beatles could be better is if they were American women
This is the most Beatles-y Beatles album ever. It's still the young, poppy, kinda sad early stuff that most people think of when they think about the Beatles. It's interesting how simple (even bad?) the recording quality is and how short the songs are. It's so simple, but clearly the beginnings of what changed music.
Early beatles
Este estuvo mejor que los otros que hemos escuchado. 8/10
Beatles. Not much to say.
good but too horny for me. fav tracks: any time at all, things we said today, and i love her.
good album probably my least listened to beatles album
A Hard Day’s Night is certainly not as robust as their later albums, but these sweet little love songs really deliver the harmonies and catchy riffs.
Felt more like a compilation of songs than an album, but such great tracks from it.
A good album but not my favourite Beatles one. I get that this is early in their career, but if I want Beatles 'pop', then the first two albums are better. That said an album of great songs. How good are the Beatles when it still gets 4 and its not their best album!
This was great stuff, namesake is my favorite. 4.5/5
not my favorite Beatles album but whew it still has some HITS
middle of the road beatles for me
When they were Fab. Not my go to Beatles record but it's really good. Lot's of great harmonies and George guitar work
If I Fell, And I Love Her are too slow; I especially like A Hard Day’s Night, Can’t Buy Me Love
What a great album.
Early Beatles aren't any favorite Beatles, but for some reason I still enjoy it a lot. Short, upbeat, filled with harmonies, total pop. This is the first album to feature all original songs, though they undeniably pull from the 50's American rock 'n' roll they were mostly covering previously. George's 12-string Ric on this album is pretty much responsible for years of emulation and eventually spawning the jangle-pop genre. I guess I can't really blame him though, it did sound good here. Another album that's hard to separate from my very long history with it. Would I still like it if I just heard it today? Hard to say, but nostalgia makes this a fun listen for sure.
Probably the Beatles album that fells most like it was made for teenage girls but still good
Fun, if sanitized!
A nice, calm album with some happy songs sprinkled in. The type that someone would fall asleep to. Although not perfect, there are a couple songs that sound empty and dull. But for the most part, a solid one.
Enjoyable
Enjoyed
A good Beatles album. Lacks the overall strength of others, but still has some great songs. 3.5/5 Probably will listen again
Still a banger.
A classic.
Great album length. There are a lot of albums on this list that have a Beatles sound but obviously the Beatles do it best. This was nothing crazy but sounded good. Reminded me of the kinks more than any other Beatles album.
Not as unique or interesting as the other Beatles albums we’ve had but still a nice listen
Great album
ein Top Album der vier, aber nicht das Beste
Certainly one of the "big" albums of the Beatles. Lots of known songs.
Poptastic! Still hints of skiffle in there, too. Ringo, especially, is on great form – delicate accents that really lift the songs.
Excelente experiência musical. 8/10
Listened to this while playing Roll Player solo. I lost. Totally enjoyed this album! I heard one of the earlier albums already on this listening journey, and I enjoyed this one quite a bit more. It made me want to play the Beatles Rock Band game.
Nice
‘Twas good
Another beatle banger
Goed album, maar zeker niet het beste van the fantastic four.
This album is super underrated but it kinda falls off in the second half. I think the ballads on here are A1! I also love the acoustic guitars. Favorite moment on the album is Paul's high harmony on the bridge of "You can't do that"
Not sure it was necessary to list every single album Paul and co spaffed out but okay
This is my favorite pre-Rubber Soul album. No covers. Full on McCartney-Lennon pop songwriting genius from start to end. There's something to love about each track.
Great album.
Good
Great songs, but not something I'd revisit often
Ah my first Beatles album of this review thang. First of many I'm sure. I hadn't listened to the earlier albums before really. The lads have got the Brit-poppy thing down at this stage. Great songwriting, just lacking the depth that you know comes later. Though songs like And I Love Her give some key indicators of the genius that's to come. But you can't deny those hits, Hard Days Night, Can't Buy Me Love. But And I Love Her i had never heard before. Beautiful song.
Listened a really long time ago 2022/late 2021. It’s been in my rotation. First album where they find a sound of their own. I don’t really love the jangle and so this is often one my least favourite. Still songs are spectacular as Lennon McCartney always are.
I know this one all too well. I actually had to hold off playing it until this evening because Vicky wanted to hear it again and she was at the water park today. Lots of big 1960s hits on this album.
Never listened to this album, but have heard many of the songs of course. Hard to have perspective on something like this that is so foundational. A number of true classics. But if I judge it as I listen to it today, I can only give it a (strong) 4. "Until then I'll cry instead"
I listened to the Red and Blue albums loads of times in my early teens. I crossed paths with Paul once at a Stella McCartney event in London. What do you say to someone like that: "I like your work"? If you've never seen the film "Yesterday", it's amusing.
Great album...only complaint is that it doesn't have the variety and complexity of some of the later Beatles albums. It still amazes me how prolific they were in such a short period of time...
It’s a classic, not much to say. Not my favorite Beatles album, but a good album nonetheless.
WAS SO GOOD BUT NOT A 5 BECAUSE OF SOME SONGS
it's an overall pretty good album. you can tell it's one of their earlier albums, though. also the amount of times they said "love" should be criminal. jokes aside, i really like the vocals on all the tracks, and all the songs are really danceable, no matter if the song is slow or fast. i really do like this album, i just think it could have been stronger and more varied in theme. but otherwise a pretty good early work!
Would want to review more Beatles albums for context, but overall enjoyed it.
Very nice to listen to. I think in terms of the music overall it’s a 3+ and it gets a bonus point for being so short and sweet. I’m very excited to listen to more Beatles on this list.
I think almost everyone has heard the two singles from this album, but there are some pretty good B-Sides as well. I especially enjoyed the slower ballads. Obviously this isn’t anywhere near The Beatles best album, but it’s so catchy even if it’s only half an hour long. I would accept arguments that this is a three star album, but I’ll let my bias show and proudly rate it a four.
I listened to Beatles 1 probably 100 times as a pre-teen in my dad's car so the early Beatles were imprinted on my brain. Between the nostalgia of childhood summers, the great movie, A Hard Day's Night, and Can't Buy Me Love this is an easy 5.
I know that one of the top reviews on this is saying that it’s useless to compare their early work to the later, but as much as I enjoy A Hard Day’s Night and it’s big songs, as an album it wouldn’t be on here if it weren’t for the excellence of their later work. It’s all good, some of it even great, but it’s not as good as the stuff from Rubber Soul onwards
Sehr gut
It feels almost blasphemous to not rate a Beatles album 5 stars, but I don't think this one gets there, especially when I had the White album earlier this week. This is still a very good album, and a really solid listen. It just doesn't quite rise to the same standard of other Beatles albums.
Amazing album- probably the beatles best pop work, apart from maybe help?
Базовик. Хороший альб, всегда у меня был твёрдо на четвёро4ку. Пару песен были кавернуты мной на басу, да так, что я их больше слышать не могу. Люблю наряды битлов на облоге.
Early pop-y Beatles, lots of driving beats, wild how few songs are not familiar
It's a Beatles album, not their best, but still
It's earlier Beatles and they don't have the depth they get to get but it's impossible to deny how much they popularized different aspects of music. The drums could easily just be a session player but vocals, lyrics, and especially lead guitar give such a memorable album. One thing that easily catches your attention on slightly older albums is just how short some songs used to be. Also, two songs telling women not to fool around with other guys. Was this an epidemic at the time?
Harmless, catchy pop rock songs. Room for improvement, a little redundant sounding at times. Great track lengths. Good compositions. I wish I had written this while listening through it. Favorite track at this time was Any Time at All.
super leuk album, niet me favo beatle album maar heerlijke songwriter album, zeer cute
Altijd leuk Beatles Kende deze nog niet ook
Great album loved it
Very Beatles-esque that these all could have been sad and mellow songs but they're upbeat instead. It's like a celebration of the fact that they loved instead of thinking that it didn't go to plan.
Not usually a Beatles fan but that was enjoyable to listen to tempo was consistent and it didn't feel choppy at all
It’s them before they became legendary
Classic.
Even though I'd like to give every single Beatles album 5 stars, I can't give Abbey Road and A Hard Day's Night the same amount of stars.
Good songwriting, but I don't like the sound...
I like this Beatles more
The first Beatles album made up entirely of original tracks is also their first album that is truly "great" devoid of what might be considered filler. Lennon is the star of this one, singing lead all over the album, and delivering some of the band's best tracks, such as the title track and the lovely "If I Fell". Paul brings some bangers of his own though, like "Can't Buy Me Love", "And I Love Her", and "Things We Said Today". The film that this album serves as soundtrack to is phenomenal as well. While I wish I could grant this a perfect 5-stars (it would be a 4.5 if I could), it doesn't quite live up to the heights of the band's other 5-star efforts. So, a conservative 4 stars, but I can't help but feel I'm being unfair to such a wonderful collection.
Not yet hit the hights
A couple of classics and a step into a more mature rock and roll sound.
Great album. I wonder what ever happened to them…
VERY GOOD !!!!!
Old school rock and roll Beatles. Short and sweet.
The Beatles are about to hit their unique stride here. Some bangers but not quite perfect yet.
More of a fan of A Flacid Night’s Day
These guys know what they’re doing
One of my lesser favourite Beatles records but it's still a great LP
Sorry its been a hard days night of procrastinating but maybe its a good song
I was surprised at how few of these songs I knew. Sound is unmistakable. Fun album.
Really good Beatles album and the epitome of 60s pop. I'd give it 4.5 stars if that was an option.
Great album classic Beatles
i love the beatles but that love doesnt really start until rubber soul. these songs are charming but none of them stand out and theyre pretty simple. its enjoyable and 30 minutes is a good runtime but i dont listen to this very often. this and help are still leagues ahead of every other early beatles record. 7/10
More Beatles! Still from their early era but getting closer to their mid-Beatles era that is my favorite. Lots of songs I love but many that are just ok to me, so 4*. Beatles will always skew higher for me. Highlights: i should have known better, if i fell (paul's voice cracking near the end), and i love her, you can't do that (everybody's greeeeen)
I love every song on here.
Other than Help! It is the best early Beatles album
Well, this is a bit of a surprise. Despite seemingly being the favorite of early Beatles, I always considered this the worst of their whole discography, or at least tied for Beatles for Sale for that position. However, I apparently never listened to the harmonies on this record, because there are some gorgeous, breathtaking transitions here that floor me for 1964. I mean, this shows the Beatles weren't just a boy band, but a band with a near perfect bond that made some great pop songs. That isn't to say there isn't other great aspects as well, such as the increased quality in hooks and musicianship. I mean, some solos here are not only good, but damn good, and its just an overall solid package. My main issue is the album starts to drag with the copious amounts of "I'm gonna hurt my girlfriend" songs, to the point where its hard not to see why John Lennon was viewed as an abuser. Those songs are rarely fun, catchy, or even rocking, they're just lacking in so many areas that it really drags the album down with it. Other Beatles albums have this issue, sure, but this one feels like they're trying to hammer it in by the end, and it doesn't feel bluesy, it feels like the closest thing to admitting domestic abuse. Otherwise I would definitely see the best of the early era, and it may just be even with those issues.
The Beatles’ early stuff might be rather bubblegum, but it’s so damned FUN. Which is far more than most of this list can say, given that there is a large quantity of… ‘interesting’ albums. This album, their third, shows a clear development in their songwriting and musicianship. 9/10
I am not super crazy about the early Beatles sound, so this is my first time listening to a pre Rubber Soul Beatles album all the way through. After listening, I would say that this album is good, but not great. There are a couple very good songs, but for the most part I would describe the songs as just good or okay. This is probably a high 3 close enough to round up to a 4. Check out Kurt Cobain's cover of And I Love her, it's very good.
