Reviews (page 9 of 14)
The Beatles throwing down the gauntlet for original songwriting here.
One of the best early albums by the Beatles when they definitely found their groove with a consistent album of hits and strong material. The filler is slimmed down without any throwaway songs. A solid record!
Early Beatles... A sweet early 69s sound. Great harmony
Okay. Not as good as Fat Man Scoop though, is it? Who fucking tonight? Who fucking tonight? Who fucking tonight? Oh, oh
Yeah, about as good as '60s British guitar pop gets. And some early examples of what would become the McCartney signature style of balladry thrown in for good measure. Probably the best album by this era of The Beatles i.e. the bowl cut, matching suits, cheeky chappy Beatles.
At its worst this sounds like a pretty good Merseybeat record - and material like 'Things We Said Today' sounds like decent Hollies or Herman's Hermits but beats them to the punch. Of course, the biggies like 'Can't Buy Me Love' and 'Hard Day's Night' stand out, but dig deep and there's some really cool, hard-edged (for the time) rock 'n' roll here too. 'Any Time at All' and, especially, 'When I Get Home' crackle and fizz with a rare electricity. John Lennon never sounded better.
Not quite the songwriting of their later work, but the harmonies from Paul and John really shine here. Great run time, clear production and catchy pop rock overall.
Even with an earlier album that has less of a legacy than the later ones, the Beatles know to entertain. Short, fast songs with easy melodies. Nothing wrong with that even though they of course lack the depth of their later works
Ok so I thought, oh great I guess I'm supposed to rate this highly. To my surprise this album was filled with quality songs, not only the ones I, and everybody, knew but gems like Any Time At All and I'll Be Back, songs which might not have been hits at the time but stand up against time. On every track you can hear The Beatles give everything they have making the whole album an absolute treasure.
It's the Beatles, so it's a good album. However, this was made for a movie. It seems like making things specifically for a movie makes them worse. It was a bit forgettable for a Beatles album. Except for the title song. Ringo coined the term.
I prefer the later albums in their catalog but a great 1st effort.
This album is compact, fast-paced, and full of peppy love songs that are easy to sing along to. There isn't much to offer in the way of variety or depth, but it's also clear that this isn't the type of music that commands that sort of thing. It's good album to put on if you just wanna hum and bob your head for half an hour.
Like it good 8/10 first Beatles
What I consider to be the beginning of The Beatles Golden era, the experimental side started here. 4.5/5
Classic Beatles. Most popular songs: A Hard Day's Night & Can't Buy Me Love. Some sleepers: If I Fell & Things We Said Today. You can tell the Fab Four are moving into a more confident, pop producing zone with this album.
Finally got a Beatles album! I like this album because it still has influences from the 50s, but solidifies the early Beatles sound before the psychedelia came into play.
The hits slap, the fillers are just that. It’s hard to rate this anything less than 4-5 stars as it’s the freaking Beatles. Hook after hook
Not my favorite Beatles but so many good songs. I'm happy just to dance with you is my favorite from here
Some good classics. Overall not my favorite Beatles.
For me this is and always will be the defining album of The Beatles. Mellow guitars and great songwriting by Lennon and McCartney set the mood for the album. The scene of a good nightcap from the 60s after work. And, by God, the introductory song is so uplifting.
The Beatles third album. A 30 minute romp of uncomplicated, joyful, catchy guitar pop. All original compositions for the first time and a handful of stone cold classics. For simple good fun this is hard to beat. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: A Hard Day's Night Date listened: 15/11/22
The beatles are cool
One of my favorite albums of all time
Good Beatles album, not the best Beatles album. The title track is a classic. As well as can't buy me love, and I love her, and tell me why. Overall a great listen, perfect example of mid 60s brit-pop
I saw the movie before listening to the album and am pretty sure the songs aren’t all the same. That said the singles from this album are amazing and the other songs are solid if not as memorable
Nostalgic
Pop and all, listen to the call! For this here is enough! Certainly not their best, not even the greatest of their pre-studio days, but man what a fine time! Somewhat sloppy in some aspects, but you can still enjoy yourself listening to this sweet scouse music!
4.5/5. I prefer late stage LSD era Beatles but boy band Beatles still slaps.
Brilliant ! Every track a good’un ! 4*
love this album
I only give a 4 because not the strongest Beatles album. It is great anyway.
The thing that makes me give this 4.5 instead of 5 stars is the fact that the album is just too “pop”-orientated. It is loaded with pop songs. And I appreciate the fact that there are no covers on this one. It is a classic and in 1964 this would have been an amazing purchase! 4.5/5
Another Beatles album given to me. The Beatles truly were fantastic. There are so many good songs on this record, a few duds which bring it down so you could cull a track or two and extend the length of some songs.
The Beatles can deliver constrained as they are here by genre and length. Two very strong openers for the two sides; Beyond that, I liked the sounds on the B-side a little better. I'm impressed by the breadth of the short songs, and happy to receive the record now.
Early Beatles…I can’t quite hear how they’ll become their more out there selves on this record and yet some of the White album is not too far away from this. A short, sweet pop record.
Haven’t ever listened to this whole album before. Really enjoyed hearing the whole thing in order
Swag
Nice tunes :) tasteful length
it was good
I'm enjoying the now-classic Beatles sound at a time when it was probably fresh. The remastered vocals are really good quality. Lots of classics here but I'm enjoying some I've never heard before. The whole album is a hitter, I guess they didn't put filler on albums back in the day.
4.3 + This one's definitely the best of the pre-Revolver albums. I'm not sure whether these songs were part of their Munich rotation but they sound honed to razor-sharp perfection. Lots of snappy guitar and drum sounds, especially on the title track but also on deeper cuts like "Things We Said Today." Side B doesn't have quite the same shine but side A is filled with incredible moments - the Motown-inflected soul of "I Should Have Known Better", the intricate harmonies and chord structure of "If I Fell." But my absolute favorite is "And I Love Her", which is a neatly constructed love ballad with some gorgeous Latin-inspired elements.
They never miss a beat
Pre-listening: Ah, The Beatles take the first album? I wonder if this is in any kind of order. I don't really know that much more about The Beatles than any average musician would know. I definietly haven't intentionally listend to A Hard Day's Night, and I have no earthly idea where it is in their discography. Probably early, I'd bet. Peri-listening: 1964 was 58 years ago, and yet there's something about the sound that doesn't sound nearly that old. Maybe I'm just growing old, but this was on the radio when my parents were kids. Literally my parents' music. The remaster obviously is an improvement over any other way to listen in modern times. On the radio or on a table this probably sounded way grainier, but we didn't demaned ultra high fidelity back then. I understand the digital vs. analog difference but you can't really argue with modern bitrates if the mastering is done well.
Solid Beatles, a good bit of the old and nuances of what was to come
Fourth Beatles album so far. Ruby Soul, White Album, Abbey Road are all clear 5 star albums. AHDN contains a couple of truly great songs of course, so hard to give a score < 4,, but also a bit too much filler for a 5 star rating. 5*: A Hard Day's Night, I Should Have Known Better, Can't Buy Me Love, Any Time At All. 2*: I Am Happy Just To Dance With You, Tell Me Why 3*-4*: the other seven songs.
4/5. Crazy how there are so many hits on this album. It should be a 5/5 but some of the lesser known ones sound too similar that it’s hard to tell them apart. By the end of the album you get the vibe but dang does this album have bangers.
I really dig it
I'm trying to imagine hearing this with fresh ears, but these are many of the songs I'm sick of hearing.
Not my fav Beatles album but still so consistent from front to back, great album
Solid beatles pop, was very surprised to see how much I already knew
Some fine and legendary pop rock though I'm very much a bigger fan of their upcoming psych era. Lots of earworms on this for sure.
Honestly shocked to see that we’re only just now getting a Beatles album. We haven’t even had a solo album from one of the four! Unfortunately, I don’t have much use for their earliest stuff in LP form. The hits are timeless, but most of the deep cuts are forgettable. It’s funny to think about now, but at this point, the album as a listening experience wasn’t a big draw for rock n roll- these were made with a couple of singles in mind, but little regard for the rest. Jazz artists, including Sinatra, were the ones who were expanding the LP. But I mean, it’s still all good. Some of these even have shockingly killer work from Ringo, of all people. Should be complimented with the movie. B
"Any Time At All" & "You Can't do That" stand out in particular for me. The best is yet to come so I'm leaving room with a 4. It's a really great album and if it were any other band it would probably get a 5.
Other than the two singles I know nothing from here but it’s the Beatles so it’s gotta be good… The album opens with the title track it’s a very solid pop/ rock tune and a great way to open an album! I should’ve known better is okay, very lighthearted but nothing particularly special here. I like if I fell it’s got quite a downtrodden feeling to the whole track which I like for this point in the album. I’am happy just to dance with you is a shortie and seems to play a filler role but it’s still a good song. And I love her is quite good a slow acoustic jam with percussion work that sounds like pots and pans are getting hit Tell me why seems to be one of those songs with happy instrumentals but not so happy lyrics, the song isn’t necessarily dark but both elements do juxtapose well. Can’t buy me love is a solid single but it’s honestly quite a mid-tier Beatles single, nothing inherently wrong with that just not a mind blowing track. Any time at all is a solid way to open side two I really like John Lennon’s vocals here. I’ll cry instead is a folkish little short skiffle it’s okay and works really well in it’s place in the tracklist but it’s not amazing. Things we said today has a nice little bit of guitar strumming and would probably be the best but I don’t think Paul’s softer voice works too well ( I know it’s written by him so it makes sense but I still think it would’ve sounded better with John on vocals). When I get home is a great solid rocker nothing amazing but nothing dreadful. The penultimate track you can’t do that is a nice little rock n roll tune I honestly have a very similar option about this to the last song ( but this one is a tad better). I’ll be back was an amazing album closer brilliant tune! Something about the Beatles just seems to put a smile on my/ most peoples faces so that’s why an album that would normally be a 3/4 ( good but nothing mind blowing) gets away with a 5… Actually nah this is definitely a 4 I can’t give this album a 5 knowing how good late Beatles are.
Naivt nå, men banebrytende da
ikkje da besta av beatles, men fortsatt bra
I'm a huge Beatles fan, and as far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as a bad Beatles album. So when presented with a Beatles album in this context, the question boils down to "Does this album deserve four stars or five?" In this case, it's four. The title track is obviously a classic, as is "Can't Buy Me Love," but there's much more to like here. "Tell Me Why" and "Any Time at All" are prototypical early Beatles, and "I'll Cry Instead" has a slight (but pleasant) country twang. Those who lean toward the McCartney side of the street will enjoy "And I Love Her" and "Things We Said Today, and Lennon fans may recognize "You Can't Do That" as a spiritual precursor to Lennon's "Jealous Man" (that latter of which is covered to perfection by Donny Hathaway, BTW). I tend to every-so-slightly favor their later, more experimental stuff, but this is a fantastic album. An easy four stars.
Perfect harmonies for a thoroughly rainy day.
So - the good. Amazing harmonies. If I Fell. I'll be Back. George's jangly guitar. John's creativity spurt. The bad? Not enough Paul. Too much puppy love in the lyrics. Sounds very samey. No George-penned songs. Overall? A very good album, though not a great one.
One of the better 'early' Beatles albums. It is nothing compared to Abbey Road, Sgt Pepper, and the White Album but still pretty good. Standout: And I Love Her, If I Fell, Things We Said Today. Others: Hard Day's Night, Can't Buy Me Love, I Should Have Known Better, If I Fell, I'll Cry Instead, I'm Happy Just to Dance With You, and I'll Be Back. 4/5
I should have known better I'm happy just to dance with you You can't do that
I fear they wont go far
A good album from a slowly evolving band.
Classic Beatles. Not a ton of hits, though.
Surprisingly enjoyed this more than I thought I would, and the following songs Spotify played based off the album were great. Would probably seek this out again.
4.5 Honestly I’m surprised by how much I liked it. It reminds me of the other bands from that era I like and less psychedelic. Some songs are kinda whatever Beatles fare but there are really cool songs here. ‘Anytime at All’ has that rocking spirit that I love about The Who. I’m far more interested in the deep cuts here than the hits. I learned that one of my favorite jazz songs is actually a cover of ‘And I Love Her’ which turns out is also a pretty cool jazzy tune itself. ‘Tell Me Why’ makes me think of the Happy Days theme and not in a good way. The last song has such a lovely melody and really nice harmonies, and almost leaves me feeling melancholy. There might be something to these knappy haired kids from England. There’s honestly more on this that I like than I don’t. To rip-off YouTube movie reviewer Jeremy Jahns: I’d say it’s worth buying on vinyl Favorites include: ‘If I Fell’, ‘And I Love Her’, ‘Any Time at All’,
A classic -- there's some absolute bangers on here but also some weaker tracks like If I Fell. 86/100 gecs
Not too much that can be said here. It's the Beatles. Some would say they are overrated (Hey Daf!) but I still caught myself nodding my head to the title track and overall enjoyed the listen. 100 gecs is overrated.
not my fav beatles album but its the beatles and I love it
Mér þykir svo vænt um þessa plötu.
some classics early and then ends with quite a song and one i hadn’t heard
Good. Lot of songs kinda sound the same. Some bangers.
Catchy!
Good shit. Classic 60's stuff and cute lyrics
It's good. Solid stuff, cool jangly guitar bits. pure 60s pop sound.
3.5
Um dos álbuns que eu mais escuto.
Really great, but not their most enduring. This blurb from Apple Music is perfect: "the first glimpse of our modern idea of the Beatles: safe but a little strange; warm but with shades of bleakness; a band that experimented tirelessly without ever leaving the mainstream." [prior rate]
4.75
All good stuff.
Not what I was expecting, but very much appreciated.
They broke the mould and made a new one.
Great hits and some favorites that are lesser known. The British invasion holds strong in this album.
Genre: Merseybeat 4/5 Finally, my 156th album generated is the first Beatles album I've received this entire exercise. A Hard Day's Night, while not their biggest album, and while not necessarily showcasing the best of The Beatles catalogue, it's their biggest showcase at the time of the true power that was held by the best selling songwriting duo in music history. Lennon/McCartney are the songwriters credited on all 13 songs here, a first for The Beatles and a landmark effort for Pop Rock. Not many groups or artists could boast to have written every song on their record, and certainly not many who did could point to the success that The Beatles had with their songs. A Hard Day's Night, the title track that landed them a #1 hit as well as a #1 movie, is a classic from the very first chord, and is a perfect example of the perfect pop song, right down to its iconic fadeout. The rest of the album, especially the first half (the songs featured in the aforementioned movie), are some of the best from the Early Beatles' era. From other pop rock perfections like the other #1 hit Can't Buy Me Love, to unsung heroes like John's loner anthem I'll Cry Instead, John and Paul finely craft a genuinely wonderful and memorable collection of songs. Paul's somber ballad And I Love Her is exquisitely sung and arranged, the hard rockin' You Can't Do That features some classic 3-part harmonies from the boys, and songs like the moody outro I'll Be Back, or the simple yet effective If I Fell, serve as hints of their future forays into folk pop music. Overall, this album isn't seamless, and won't be everybody's cup of Earl Grey, but for what it's worth, this is a damn good pop rock album. The movie is truly great too, if anybody is interested. Both are very worthy of checking out. Love these Brits.
It's the Beatles, obviously
It's buck wild how much great music the Beatles put out in the 60s. This album is stellar, and it isn't even close to my top five Beatles albums. There's not much else to say about this album. It's good from the very first note. It would be nice if they wrote fewer love songs, but that's the early Beatles for you. Well worth a listen 4/5
Funny that this is probably one of the weaker Beatles albums. This album is fantastic, some great catchy songs and the Beatles becoming the Beatles. Cool rhythms and feel. Lyrics are a bit juvenile and the solos aren't anything too great.
It's the Beatles (red best of Beatles, so rock and roll rather than wild experimentation Beatles). Side A is a bunch of all time classics with very little filler. Side B is a bunch of filler with very little all time classics. I'm only this harsh because they are that good.
listened to again it's a good album
Do these guys ever do anything wrong? No. A great album. The sound is pre-experimental Beatles, so it may appear boring for a regular listener. I, though, find a "vintage" beauty in their classic sound. John and Paul create some godly catchy love lyrics, they never leave your mind. Jangly guitars, sometimes harmonicas, all thes combined together create another pop-perfected masterpiece of The Beatles.
Sex sells people, G rated sex still sells
Not their best but you can really hear them coming into themselves on this album
4,5!! awesome
love it
Exciting up and coming band never heard of em Not their best bust still really good
It took me till my 142nd album to get a Beatles one and then I get my second on my 145th… Like buses… Insert standard pretentious “I tend to only listen to post Rubber Soul Beatles albums” comment This is one of the great pop records and the first of all original material for the Beatles, one of their best pre Rubber Soul. Shows the versatility and the progression of the Beatles’ song writing that the same band would go on to record Revolver two years later and the previous year their first two albums were made up 40% of covers.
Great album. Things we said today and Should have known better are my favorites.
Y si me apuran 3.5
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Bulletproof. A couple of sentimental slowies hence not the full five.
It's not their best by a long shot but it's still The Beatles, you know? The hits are there and they're amazing and the other tracks... well, it's still The Beatles. There's not a bad track on the album. But there are some fairly mediocre ones.
Peace and love 😎✌️🌟🌈
I have a soft spot for this album because I watched this movie so many times at the height of my "Beatlemania" (hey, we were all cringy high schoolers once). That opening chord on "A Hard Day's Night" is legendary. However, for the album as a whole, its weak points are just a tad bit too skippable and uninspired ("You Can't Do That" being one of my least favorite Beatles songs). That being said, "I'm Happy Just to Dance With You" and "If I Fell" are absolutely stunning and some of my favorite tracks.
Really great, but not their most enduring. This blurb from Apple Music is perfect: "the first glimpse of our modern idea of the Beatles: safe but a little strange; warm but with shades of bleakness; a band that experimented tirelessly without ever leaving the mainstream."
I both like and dislike this album. I think it's the issue that I've heard all of these songs innumerable times and they've become banal. I tried to imagine what it would be like to hear this album for the first time and it's solid.
sad boy love
Quality beatles magic but not the most sublime.
I would've been a terrible Beatle. I don't have the hair.
That opening chord gets me every time! Some parts of the album start to drag, but overall great! I'll always love The Beatles.
The Fab Four at their purest. Not an album I’ve consciously listened to for years - I’m generally a late Beatles man rather than early - but you can’t deny it’s brilliance. Lacking in sophistication in places but at a time when most bands needed to supplement their own material with covers, this is Lennon & McCartney honing their craft as songwriters. An album that will be studied alongside the work of the classical composters in years to come. Nothing on here is less than an 8/10 with the obvious hits that are nothing short of perfection. I will be revisiting soon. Consciously.
Un bon albupm avec beaucoup de classique mais pas leur meilleur. 4.25
nice pop album from the beatles taht still holds up today
Good.
Though a tad old, Hard Day's Night is a great album and their best before Rubber Soul where The Beatles had a string of perfect albums. Really the only dud on here is When I Get Home and have to be in a good mood to like Tell Me Why and I'll Cry Instead. Apart from that every song is fantastic, with the title track being my favourite. I'd also have to recommend the Hard Day's Night movie and some of the bloopers from the album on YouTube as well for a good laugh.
Songwriting is fantastic and it's hard to ignore the impact of this album. Half of the songs are excellent, the other half are kind of... plodding. Best Track: "A Hard Day's Night"
Damn beatles are good
First rating so easy does it
Bit spooky that we get our first Beatles album on the eve of the long awaited Disney documentary 😱. Coincidence? Yes. I'm not convinced I've ever listened to Hard Day's Night all the way through. It's a very sweet sounding album. Enjoyed getting stuck into this and I look forward to their future offerings!
At the same time that is very easy to listen to anything from "Beatles", it's very hard to evaluate it. This is not an absolutely perfect album, but almost everything that I had to listen to for my whole life had some influence on this kind of thing, so it's absolutely important for my life. I'll finish with 4 starts and without a lot of comments to avoid any injustice. This is the (almost) first album from the band and they have some problems.
Not a Beatles fan by any stretch of the imagination but this is a solid album with some pretty good songs on it.
Not my favourite Beatles album but still classic NB 13 songs, 30 minutes. More like this please modern people....
Totally iconic of course. Personally I prefer later Beatles. Hard day's night has a couple of their best songs obviously, but feels like it's passed out with a lot of forgettable clichéd filler that doesn't show the personalities and talent we know from hindsight that had to offer.
One of the worse Beatles albums. 8/10
Always enjoy The Beatles but any time I listen to a full album it’s definitely 50/50 great tracks and ok tracks. This is no different
Solid album. Appreciate that it is the first to feature nothing but original compositions. The highs are super high, but I don't think it has cover to cover playability the same as later albums. 4/5
My fave Beatles albums are the later ones when they locked themselves in the studio and performed audio alchemy. But this is great. A lot of "love" songs but if you listen there is always a little twist or darker undertone. It wins stars just for the opening chord which distills down the entire emotion of that first song into one Draaaannnggggg.
I don't often listen to early Beatles anymore. I've heard the songs a million times, and I definitely prefer post 1965 Beatles, but this was really great to revisit. A few random observations: - The harmonies. So amazing and great to hear John and Paul working together. - Paul's ballads And I Love Her and Things We Said Today. Just beautiful. - They didn't give Ringo a song on this one??? What the heck? I thought he got a song on every album. - I know it's not possible, but I feel like I've never heard When I Get Home before. It's pretty much a throwaway song, so maybe it just never stuck in my head. - Some of these songs are just so exciting. Tell Me Why is a great example. Great album, shows a band progressing in leaps and bounds. Still not up to the level of their later years, but very good. 4 stars.
fun but a bit same same
The Beatles are very goods. I like "A hard day's night", "I should have known better", "And I love her" and "Can't buy me love".
Third Beatles album and the one that changed music history by using complex compositions and complicated chords in pop/rock songs (like the famous opening chord of A Hard Day's Night). Also the first Beatles album with only original material and no covers.
I've got no hill to die on here. I'm not a big fan of the Beatles in general. But I at least found this one listenable. So take that for what it's worth.
4.5/5 It's an easy day's rating.
Bops upon bops
Harsh 4, only because other albums are so much better
Beetles
How do you rate The Beatles? Kind of an impossible task. Just give every album 5 stars? I'm normally not a big fan of these kinds of poppy love songs, but The Beatles can make even those sound good. That said I'll give this 4 stars since I like a lot of their other stuff better. Feel like I'm grading on a curve though.
Their first album without covers. A lot of love songs. I like them, very pop and happy. (7/10)
A lot of early experimental magic here. But it is very samey throughout, which does knock it down a point for me
Classic early Beatles, full of short snappy Top 10 poppy hits. Enjoyed the tunes I wasn't familiar with - would listen again, wouldn't download. As ever with them, so many tunes you know without knowing the titles.
Brilliant, one of beatles' best
Jam-packed with classic Beatles masterpieces. I'm a Beatles fan, but I love the White Album, Sgt Pepper and Abbey Road much more than this one.
I'd consider myself a big Beatles fan but I think this was the first time for me listening to this the whole way through - think this one ranks somewhere in the middle, I think you could call it the best of the worst? Which, being a Beatles album, is still better than 90% of albums by my reckoning - not quite up there with Revolver, Rubber Soul, Sgt. pepper, the White album and Abbey Road (and arguably Magical Mystery Tour), but not a million miles away - you can definitely hear the beginnings of the sonic experimentation that developed throughout the above albums - the opening chord to a Hard Day's Night is iconic, And I Love her is great (especially George's guitar), and it has some bangers like Can't Buy Me Love and You Can't Do That. A big step up from the first few albums for me, and probably more interesting than the next two before Rubber Soul landed, this is a really solid contribution to their discography
A classic
all time greats
Mainly bops, few bangers
Catchy tunes and classics. Great harmonies and singalongs to songs you half know as well as the ones you've heard a thousand times.
Reminds me of my first crush.
Old school beetles when they were at their most 'pop'. Really like the theme of love and romance and the Ballards mixed with the really dancy pop songs. Good album.
Some good songs. early Beatles definitely not as interesting as later Beatles 3.5
I enjoyed this album a lot. So iconic. 4/5 stars.
Sometimes a regular album sounds like a greatest hits record. Although this style is not really my cup of tea in general; but, it's hard to deny the appeal of "can't buy me love" and "Can't do that". Basically, any of the can't songs.
pop rock nice 4/5
Kann man heute alles für selbstverständlich halten, aber das ist schon großartige Musik!
Zwei wirklich gute Lieder. When I get home und I can’t do that Bringen das Album gerade so auf 4
A tale of two sides! Love the oldies but surprised that side two has so few good songs
Interesting how much variety there is in beatles music
Good, but look, I get that Beetles is a fine band, no need to drop every single album here...
Sinds de film Yesterday hebben de Beatles een extra dimensie gekregen. Leuke muziek.
Duidelijk een popalbum die moest gesmaakt worden door een groot publiek. Ik kon het dus ook wel smaken
it has some nice themes, however these themes could have been explored more or a bit more unique. this album felt a bit boring to listen to, there is not that much substance to it lyrically. musically though, it is okay.
Knew some of the songs for this one! Nice to have on while working in the kitchen.
Jangly upbeat skiffle-era Beatles. Some forgettable songs, two mega-hits, and replay-able mid-tier tracks. Wish there were more bands mimicking this phase of the Beatles.
I actually really like this album. The vocal harmonies and songwriting have really started to mature by this point.
very poppy, but very good of course. very groovy, but the lyrics got a bit tiresome. "You can't do that"... sign of the times! Any Time at all is top
great guitar tones.
Hey these guys are kinda good
solito dei beatles, anche qua non conoscevo tutte le canzoni. molte canzoncine allegre di storielle d'amore, nice
So many hits on one record (movie). From that era I think I preferred their balads.
Und so pubertiert sich das hier lustig adoleszent vom Skiffle-Erbe („Anytime at al“, „When I get home“) durch harmlose Teenienummern („Should Have Known Better“ und „If I Fell“) zu ersten echten Ambitionen mit Schielen auf väterliches Approval von George Martin („And I Love Her“) und sich Bahn brechender Erwachsenen-Gemeinheit nach Lennon-Geschmack („You Can’t Do That“). Sicher nicht der Beatles größter Wurf, aber schöner Einstieg für die Plauderrunde.
If there was a 4.5 option I’d probably go with that
They definitely had an influence.
1964, gutes album
Yeah, its Beatles, and yeah its good. We already knew that. Duh out of 5
Bängeri Gammaldags lyrics men bra fiilis
El álbum me ha gustado mucho, normalmente no me gustan muchas canciones del mismo álbum, pero este fue la excepción, siento que el álbum va muy con como soy yo, tiene muy buenos ritmos, movidos o lentos. Gran álbum
Really Good one
Hab dabei den iPad-Ständer gebaut
Erg goed rock achtig beatles album, would listen again
Obviously great, probably deceptively simple, though things like the country/surf/flamenco tinged rhythm guitar of And I Love Her hints at things to come. The lyrics, though sharp, are pretty basic and by the numbers pop love blossoming/love in peril stuff
Very 60s vibe en very kort
I don't think you're allowed to rate this album less than four stars.
Great classic rock album
A classic album from the boys!
Not their best album but definitely not bad.
First steps towards greatness but not quite there yet. Better to come soon so I’ll save my ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ For their more mature albums
Fun and boppy, with lyrics made for screaming 16 year old girls.
Beatlemania still strong
Good stuff, but I cant do all the relationship shit
Classic!!
Lots of hits. Pleasant listen.
They'd already announced themselves to the world before this album came out, but it's their first (and only) album to be comprised entirely of Lennon-McCarthy compositions. John contributed more songs, but for my money, Paul's are better. And I Love Her is the standout on the record, and Things We Said Today is maybe their most underrated early offering. Best track: And I Love Her
8/10
Decent album, not a big beetles fan but can see why it’s loved.
Most of the songs sound the same (even if they sound okay), but the highlights on this one are really really good.
Probably closer to a 3.5, it was a good listen but some of it was repetitive.
Familiar songs from commercials movies and passage of time generally. Can appreciate for what it is but still not much of a fan. 3/5
Incredible how they evolved & what the political & spiritual upheaval of the 60s did to their sound. This album does not do it for me.
Insanely mid
Its a Beatles album and very solid, but just not as exciting as the later albums
My favourite Beatles album. That isn’t saying a lot
If I had to listen to the Beatles this would be the one
Proof positive that even geniuses fart out a turd every once in awhile. Very little of the ingenuity that would capture my attention in their later work is in evidence here. Sure it’s very nice and proper and chip chip cheerio but it just isn’t very awesome. I don’t think this album would even make my top ten of albums by The Beatles. In fact on relisten I found the songs smacked of middle class white privilege. Their saccharine take on what they perceived to be the blues or even rock ‘n’ roll is almost laughably under informed and hopelessly cliched. One might argue that this album is why these songs sound so cliched because it inspired so many artists. While that may be important fact for popular music history is is nothing but an irrelevant detail to me the listener.
I have definitely heard “A Hard Day’s Night” before and whilst it was catchy, it didn’t do much for me. I really liked “I’m Happy Just To Dance With You”, and it was fun that he said he didn’t want to hold their hand- I wonder which came first. “And I Love Her” is nice.
EARLY POP JA
classic beatles yknow but a bit one note
This is about what comes to mind when I think of the standard Beatles sound. Not very complex, mostly vocal driven and a lot of love songs without lyrics that get me thinking too deeply. Not sure if its fatigue over the years or a natural preference but the group singing/ harmonizing that seems to be so prevalent in the 60's bands just does nothing for me. A song taken here and there is great but a whole album at once was a tougher prospect.
Didn't cure my bland feelings about the Beatles. Nothing particularly wrong with the album, but one listen was enough.
My parents claimed to be big Beatles fans, but as far as I can remember, that didn’t really show in the music they listened to. When they did play something, though, it tended to be their early work - and “A Hard Day’s Night” definitely counts among those. Given these songs, though, I couldn’t understand Beatlemania at all, and even today it doesn’t exactly blow me away. From my perspective, it’s simply a good singer-songwriter album with rather shallow lyrics, but pretty good production. It’s worth a listen, but in the context of this project, it serves more as a comparison along the lines of “look how boring the Beatles were before Sgt. Pepper.”
Not the best Beatles record but solid nevertheless
Certainly a development in their instrumental creativity and skill, even if the songs still feel very “for teenagers by teenagers” with all the first person love songs and John’s still very much the big front of the band. Still doesn’t feel like the big jump point for me to when I click with the Beatles, too early and too much potential they’re not quite at yet. They’re getting there though. And the film’s good so that helps too.
Early Beatles not really my thing. Something ive heard a million times before from a million different bands. Hindsight is unkind to their early work. 3/5
I’m a Beatles fan. There are some great harmonies and interesting chord progressions. But I love their later work so much more.
It's okaaaay....
jest ok, kilka fajnych piosenek
Beatles halt
gran disco, siempre un placer escuchar los beattles. no ess mi prefrido, pero al verdad que se goza
#388/1001. The original boy band returns, with probably the most amount of songs, which are not part of the Beatles top 100 song book. Better things are yet to come.
I’m not sure who is harmonizing on “If I Fell” but there’s this part on I think the second “in vein” where he sounds like he’s gonna fucking pass out. Always bugged me. Awesome to start an album off with a made up chord. Lame to write a sequel to your biggest hit. Best of theirs up to this point in their career but no one would give a shit about this in retrospect if it weren’t for their later stuff
how it feels getting through these fucking albums. getting real tired of the bullshit. REAL tired. great title track. too much cowbell. a bunch of overglorified teeny bopper stuff. with occasional reminders why MJ singing decades beyond his young years was such a revelation. nothing against teenybop. i Better see nsync on this fuckass list then. 3.1-3.5.
first Beatles album. 30 mins, easy breezy listening
al fin escuche un album entero de los beatles!!!
hyfsat bra!
I don't understand how you can play sketchy bars and strip clubs for years and your music sounds like this.
this must be what people who think the beatles suck genuinely think all their music sounds like
Overall feels lighter, much more of a pop sound, shorter songs with not as much substance. Couple of good classics.
5/10
Beatles är Beatles och det är svårt att komma ifrån att de skapar grymma och catchy låtar. Detta album dräller av trallvänliga låtar. Vem kan inte sjunga med i Can't But Me Love?
Great soundtrack album
I'm feeling like a 3.5...
Ohh early Beatles…idk. First half sounds like a 12 yr old learning to play guitar writing songs about his crush in math class. 2nd sounds like a rock and roll band still finding their footing but with potential. It was still at marketing at this point to me - i'll be over here listening to Ray Davies.
Normal, definitivamente tienen mejores álbumes.
They had an early recipe. Talk about love and boy did the girls buy it.
Expected to rate this one better, grew up on the beatles and this wasn't my favorite then, this listen though I got lost in how dated it was feeling. Funny huh
Finally a Beatles album after listening to 174 other albums. I love these guys, love their voices. This isn't one of their best, maybe a bit too many love songs, but still good.
Not my fav album but has some classics
One of the weaker Beatles albums is still great.
I don’t like the vocals, songs not bad just not my favorite, title track is really good tho
It’s OK but not amazing. I recognise the influence it had, the fact that it was the first album with songs all written by the Beatles (Lennon/McCart ey to be precise) but it doesn’t take away from the fact that some of the songs are a bit pedestrian
I mean its the beatles theyre pretty solid
Good songs but just not a complete work. I know I'm being unfair by comparing to later records, but for the high highs on this record, there are also generic songs that I've completely forgotten already.
tunes! “a hard day’s night” is my favourite, makes me happy everytime i listen to it. softer songs like “if i fell” and “things we said today” are also very nice.
Extremt stark trea men tycker inte riktigt albumet tar sig hela vägen till 4 som helhet. Can't buy me love är himla fin!
Några bra låtar, i övrigt inget uppseendeväckande
Might suit with this one for a bit, it wants to hit but hasn't yet
Sure it's seminal and deserving of its place but not for me
im surprised we got this far in without a beatles album but we're finally here i guess, honestly idk what to say about this one. it sure is the beatles! i don't really find their earlier stuff as interesting and this is very much their earlier stuff. its like, pretty good, but also these guys were kinda just defining pop music at the time so there's plenty of this sound out there. its like, it's kind of suffered from success.... like how the weapon selection in half life feels generic now cos every fps game afterwards copied it. do you understand? anyway obviously the title track is great, it's the only one off this album that got around enough for me to have already heard it and for a good reason. other than that i think the album is at its strongest in the middle, i enjoyed "and i love her", "can't buy me love" and "any time at all" a lot, with the former in particular making me wish the songs were a little longer? its kind of wild that they're all less than 3 minutes. it does mean there's a lot of variety crammed into the 30 minute runtime tho so it's hard to fault them for it. yknow, i think i was kinda dreading getting to early beatles albums, but honestly? its pretty decent. not sure i'll go back to it often tho.
"I love her" "I love you" "I'll tell her" "I'll tell you" repeat these about 30 times and you've got the foundation for early Beatles lyricism. I do like when they bring in 1 (one) new instrument for every other song, and can't knock their ability to harmonize. Yuuuuuuuup, The Beatles.
Kind of fun hearing a Beatles album with only a few hits
My first ever Beatles album! Legend amongst legends in the world of mainstream music. I can't believe I've never listened to anything else except their most popular singles. I was almost nervous to press play... And don't hit me, but that nervousness seemed to be somewhat prophetic. While this is a good record filled with fun hooks and simple short joys, it's missing something that would've pushed it to "great". I can tell however, that their best is yet to come! I'm super eager to get into albums later in their career (especially a certain one of the most famous albums of all time).
Fairy decent Beatles album, some of their singles. Not the most exciting stuff though, very pedestrian, and boring for me.
Fine, before they became interesting
Album #152 The Beatles: A Hard Day’s Night I’m surprised it took me this long to get a Beatles album, considering you could make the case for any of their albums being included here. These days, when people discuss the Beatles, it’s mostly Rubber Soul and beyond, with the odd inclusion of Help! (mostly due to Yesterday), with their early albums were chalked up as basic pop. However, there is a reason that the Fab Four got so popular to begin with: their early music, though seemingly simple, was actually incredibly ahead of its time still. The production on a lot of these tracks holds up incredibly well, and though it’s not my favourite of the early Beatles albums (Help! and Please Please Me), it is still a great listen. Obviously, one of Ringo’s finest contributions as well, since he coined the term “hard day’s night,” which is nice because I love Ringo. Best Songs: A Hard Day’s Night, Can’t Buy Me Love, I Should Have Known Better Worst Song: When I Get Home Score out of 10: 7.5
“I’ll Be Back” was the album favorite for me.
nostalgic shi, not for me tho
Fun!
I guess it sounds good, I'm just really biased against the Beatles. This album didn't really have that Beatles feel to me, and none of the songs were super popular and I couldn't really enjoy the album that much.
I like this album...but I don't love this album, as a standalone or really as a piece of The Beatles' discography. It is fun and catchy, and an incredibly significant album in the course of Beatles history. That said, I would put most of the songs on this album in the "good" but not "great" bucket. The particular flavor of 60s pop on display on this album is always kind of hit or miss with me, and this era of Beatles just wasn't my favorite. I'm rating this a 3/5, but let the record show that I'd put it at like a 3.5/5, if I could.
Jangly. Poppy. Feel like I’m running out of things to say about the Beatles. To summarize… much respect, but never really developed a love for them. Recognize the contributions to modern pop and rock, but never really feel like putting on one of there records (with the exception of maybe Sgt Pepper). Still, it’s the Beatles and this record was mostly enjoyable.
pretty good and nice to listen to. there are some great songs and then some less great songs that sound like worse versions of the great songs. i liked Things We Said Today which i don’t think i’d ever heard before. i don’t necessarily see myself listening to it all the way through again but it was perfectly pleasant to listen to. it did feel pretty repetitive at moments. another 3.5/5 i guess
more background noise
Probably great for its time has a couple of bangers, but not really my cup of tea
Mostly striking because of the scale of the tonal shift that came later in their career. How did these tidy little ditties grow into Sgt. Pepper? The only hint I can detect are the minor-key bridges — a Lennon/McCartney staple — that veer into just a little bit of strangeness.
It’s a good album, music overall has changed so much since the Beatles dropped please please me in 1963 which makes it difficult for me to give this album a high score, it was groundbreaking for the time and still holds up well as an album. A hard days night, can’t buy me love, and you can’t do that are highlights for me.
Si los Beatles no decepcionan con su primer álbum imagínate con el segundo. 9/10
5/10
Maybe it's "you had to be there in those days, there was nothing like this in music". Maybe it's because I don't know music theory so I have no idea what to listen for and/or appreciate. Maybe they're going for some sensibilities I just don't respond to. Fuck me if I understand their appeal and eternal status.
I really like the Beatles, but am happy listening to select singles here and there. This album was good.
There are some nice melodies and harmonies on here but for the most part it just felt kinda bland and samey.
It's not aged as well as the other albums
This is actually my first beatles album that I’ve listened to. One thing’s for sure it started really really strong. I absolutely loved the first half of the album, but it got a bit old too quickly. The lyrics are fun and catchy, but at times they can become a bit annoying. Like ok, I got the idea that you guys really love that girl from the first song, there’s no need to sing about that on every song. Vocals are amazing tho. Like amazing amazing. Beautiful harmonics, on a few songs I heard some really fun drums. I think the best thing about this album is that on every song you can find a particular element that sounds really cool and this gives the album a big plus in my books. I can see why they were such a big thing in the sixties and why they still are. I’m not a huge fan of pop music, I always thought of it as digestible music for ordinary people, but I can’t lie I found myself smiling and knocking my foot on some of these songs. Overall a good catchy album that has interesting elements throughout it. 68/100
pretty good already had some songs
i came in with quite a negative view but i ended up liking it
Wow, after an earlier rating of 5 for revolver this one felt like someone exchanged my bourbon for sprite. John Lennon vocals are great on this album but clearly not the Beatles I most enjoy.
3.5/5 I grew up on the Beatles, with their records being regularly spun weekly by my father. A Hard Day's Night, to me, is the quintessential Brit-Pop era Beatles Album, which admittedly is my lesser favorite era of the Beatles. I think this album is enjoyable, and quickly digestible with a quick spin time. This is probably their best Brit-Pop album, with densely packed, well written & catchy tracks from top to bottom. While I do think the album suffers from being a rather predictable, classic Brit-Pop album— I do think it's the best execution of that style by the Beatles within the discography. This is definitely the album where the band starts to come into their own sound, and wrangle the star power of being pop stars & the demands of the record industry. Overall, I enjoyed the album, but definitely enjoy their later discography much more. Favorite Track: And I Love Her
i'm just not a beatles fan. It's the kind of music that if you didn't grow up with it, it's hard to see the hype.
Early Beatles, looking from today, are a beat band with pretty good songs. Not more and not less. Fav: Can‘t buy me love
ai... será que eu seria um fã da banda caso estivesse vivo na década de 60? Às vezes eu penso que não...
not enough ringo, too much john
pretty simple pop rock with nothing particularly happening. occasionally pulls some interesting harmony or a decent vocal performance from lennon out but that's about it.
Not mind blowing, just a good album
There were a couple tracks in the middle that were a bit more interesting, but it’s mostly just jangly pop that I don’t really care for.
Didn't enjoy this as much as I thought I would. Some good classics on it though.
I'm not really a Beatles fan, but this is a good album for the time. Just pure fun pop rock I can see why ladies were crazy back in the day for them.
Just another Beatles album. While still not bad, the second half of the album is pretty lackluster in terms of Beatles standards. There's really no hits and can be written off as more of the same early Beatles work that you already know. Simple, formulaic, somewhat catchy and quick. The Beatles output can't be understated as they were cranking out 2-minute hits on the regular, but most of the tunes on this specific album are just placeholders. Outside of the title track and Can't Buy Me Love I'm not sure anything else on this album is really that notable. I assume this makes the list due to the film accompaniment but I'm not sure this qualifies as an essential album in any way. Still better than an average album but as much as I'm a Beatles fan I think we need to axe a couple of their entries from this list including this one. 2.60 stars
This is Beatles album therefore it is good. It has the tootles track and Can’t Buy Me Lovewhich are incredible songs. It has that early FF energy It’s great. I’m not sure it’s even in their top 10 albums. Insanity
the album went by quick. kinda snappy. alright :) fav tracks: and i love her can't buy me love
Great album, but not the Beatles best work when compared to their other albums
Probably the last beatles album that had an excess of filler but the hits are excellent 3.5*
Lots of poppie love songs!
Honestly not a hugeeeee Beatles fan but that's a personal opinion
It was okay
Good Beatles songs, but a lot of filler.
Good. Short songs that feel longer than they are, so I guess this had fantastic listening time value. 3
