I haven’t really listened to The Beatles lyrics in a while. They’re… interesting

I hadn’t listened to a whole Beatles album before today. I didn’t like the mixing on Apple Music - too much going on on left speaker and not enough on right, but the music was excellent. Songs I already knew: Hard Day’s Night, Can’t Buy Me Love Favourite after listening: I’m Happy Just To Dance With You Overall: surprised by how much I enjoyed it. 9/10

Not my favourite Beatles album one that doesn't really hit for me like the rest of the albums

Beatles - the early hits

My first Beatles (or Beatle related) album! Never heard this as I'm not that keen on the early stuff. Really competent 60s pop. Couple of great hits. Some filler tracks. Not for me.

Not my favorite or go-to Beatles album. There are some decent songs, but not enough to make it worthwhile. Thankfully not a single song goes past the 3-minute mark.

An all time great album. Great collection of all Lennon/McCartney originals and the vocal work between the two is beautiful. Favourite song is hard to choose but I enjoyed the call-and-response chorus of Any Time At All a lot whilst listening.

Best Song: A Hard Day's Night. Up-tempo, nice percussion in the background. Paul's voice is used well here (within its limits). Worst Song: I Should Have Known Better. Most bands not called "The Beatles" would be skewered for that failed high note. Overall just a needlessly strained vocal performance. Overall: Obviously there are some well-written songs in here, but they make up at most half of what's on offer. And more fundamentally, even for the songs that I did quite like, I could think of covers that I like as much or more. So yeah, the Beatles had a knack for writing pop hits, but often those songs are better performed by others. Three Beatles albums in and I'm still unsold on their position as inarguable music gods.

Honestly shocked to see that we’re only just now getting a Beatles album. We haven’t even had a solo album from one of the four! Unfortunately, I don’t have much use for their earliest stuff in LP form. The hits are timeless, but most of the deep cuts are forgettable. It’s funny to think about now, but at this point, the album as a listening experience wasn’t a big draw for rock n roll- these were made with a couple of singles in mind, but little regard for the rest. Jazz artists, including Sinatra, were the ones who were expanding the LP. But I mean, it’s still all good. Some of these even have shockingly killer work from Ringo, of all people. Should be complimented with the movie. B

I enjoyed it. It's not the music I'd normally listen to. The themes of the songs got repetitive to me. My favorite songs were "Can't Buy Me Love" and "Things We Said Today".

A John album, but Paul gets to share lead vocals with him on the perfect title track. The George song is fine, but he's not trying to take you home as much he's just looking for someone to dance with. Not much for Ringo to do, although he allegedly originated the album's title, which in turn means he originated the movie's title, where he's featured prominently. Plus I enjoy his cowbell on the title track he inspired. This is either the sixth or seventh best Beatles album, but it's a landmark album: the first one where every song was written by Lennon/McCartney. It's also 30 minutes of pure bliss.

Technically gifted saccharine pop that was ultimately rather unsatisfying. Interesting only in the sense of showing how far they traveled.

"Any Time At All" & "You Can't do That" stand out in particular for me. The best is yet to come so I'm leaving room with a 4. It's a really great album and if it were any other band it would probably get a 5.

Other than the two singles I know nothing from here but it’s the Beatles so it’s gotta be good… The album opens with the title track it’s a very solid pop/ rock tune and a great way to open an album! I should’ve known better is okay, very lighthearted but nothing particularly special here. I like if I fell it’s got quite a downtrodden feeling to the whole track which I like for this point in the album. I’am happy just to dance with you is a shortie and seems to play a filler role but it’s still a good song. And I love her is quite good a slow acoustic jam with percussion work that sounds like pots and pans are getting hit Tell me why seems to be one of those songs with happy instrumentals but not so happy lyrics, the song isn’t necessarily dark but both elements do juxtapose well. Can’t buy me love is a solid single but it’s honestly quite a mid-tier Beatles single, nothing inherently wrong with that just not a mind blowing track. Any time at all is a solid way to open side two I really like John Lennon’s vocals here. I’ll cry instead is a folkish little short skiffle it’s okay and works really well in it’s place in the tracklist but it’s not amazing. Things we said today has a nice little bit of guitar strumming and would probably be the best but I don’t think Paul’s softer voice works too well ( I know it’s written by him so it makes sense but I still think it would’ve sounded better with John on vocals). When I get home is a great solid rocker nothing amazing but nothing dreadful. The penultimate track you can’t do that is a nice little rock n roll tune I honestly have a very similar option about this to the last song ( but this one is a tad better). I’ll be back was an amazing album closer brilliant tune! Something about the Beatles just seems to put a smile on my/ most peoples faces so that’s why an album that would normally be a 3/4 ( good but nothing mind blowing) gets away with a 5… Actually nah this is definitely a 4 I can’t give this album a 5 knowing how good late Beatles are.

"A Hard Day's Night" is the third studio album from The Beatles and the first album with all Lennon/McCartney originals. The writing and recording of the album coincided with the filming of their movie with the same name. Side one contains all songs written for and from the movie and were recorded before the filming. To complete an album, additional songs were recorded both before and after the filming. As for the music, yeah, they're all pop classics. "Sputnikmusic"'s Dave Donnelly said it best and I have nothing to add: "short, peppy, pop songs characterized by layered vocals, immediate choruses and understated instrumentation." The US version is different with songs from the George Martin's film score. I admit I would need a diagram of all the US and UK early Beatle album differences. This is the first album with George Harrison using a 12-string Rickenbacker guitar which had great influences on bands like the Byrds. Also, of note, no songs sung by Ringo and no Harrison written songs. Oh, Ringo is credited with the album'/film title with a comment he made during filming. Fun fact. Hard to critique classics and side one starts out with three bona-fide classics: "A Hard Day's Night" with Harrison's guitar starting note. Here's your short, peppy, pop. Oh, McCartney on the cowbell. "I Should Have Known Better" has that great harmonica start and those harmonies. Speaking of harmonies, the third song "If I Fell" has plenty of them and is a ballad of sorts. And, the first side ends with the first single and McCartney song and composed "Can't Buy Me Love." What I can say? Although not as hit-packed, the second side continues the great pop songs. Two favorites for me are the McCartney "Things We Said Today" with his lead singing and the harmonies and Lennon's "You Can't Do That" - I'm a sucker for cowbell. This album is an obvious classic and I admit it's the first time for me listening to it from start to finish. I've listened to their albums starting with "Rubber Soul" multiple, multiple times. Not so much their very early stuff. Well, that's changing.

So many great Lennon vocals on this album! I love two minute long songs as well. The 2009 remaster sounds so good.

I'm a huge Beatles fan, and as far as I'm concerned, there's no such thing as a bad Beatles album. So when presented with a Beatles album in this context, the question boils down to "Does this album deserve four stars or five?" In this case, it's four. The title track is obviously a classic, as is "Can't Buy Me Love," but there's much more to like here. "Tell Me Why" and "Any Time at All" are prototypical early Beatles, and "I'll Cry Instead" has a slight (but pleasant) country twang. Those who lean toward the McCartney side of the street will enjoy "And I Love Her" and "Things We Said Today, and Lennon fans may recognize "You Can't Do That" as a spiritual precursor to Lennon's "Jealous Man" (that latter of which is covered to perfection by Donny Hathaway, BTW). I tend to every-so-slightly favor their later, more experimental stuff, but this is a fantastic album. An easy four stars.

"If I Fell" is one of the best love songs ever recorded, and "Things We Said Today" stops me in my tracks. This album gives me the warm fuzzies, and the film is a fun watch. I will always love The Beatles.

So - the good. Amazing harmonies. If I Fell. I'll be Back. George's jangly guitar. John's creativity spurt. The bad? Not enough Paul. Too much puppy love in the lyrics. Sounds very samey. No George-penned songs. Overall? A very good album, though not a great one.

My relationship with The Beatles is weird. I nothing them. I don't mind a lot of songs, and feel nothing about most others. Just very middling stuff that doesn't provoke much emotion from me.

This hasn't aged as well as a lot of the other Beatles albums (or maybe I've just grown out of this sort of thing), it's a bit too saccharine. The opener / title track still hits reasonably hard, but any edge that had is very much filed down through the vast majority of the rest of the album. That said, it's a really solid pop album that keeps up the pace through a tight 30 minutes with a couple of really big hits, so it's a comfortable 3.

Who doesn't like early Beatles. Classic songs throughout.

One of the better 'early' Beatles albums. It is nothing compared to Abbey Road, Sgt Pepper, and the White Album but still pretty good. Standout: And I Love Her, If I Fell, Things We Said Today. Others: Hard Day's Night, Can't Buy Me Love, I Should Have Known Better, If I Fell, I'll Cry Instead, I'm Happy Just to Dance With You, and I'll Be Back. 4/5

Overall, a very solid album. Although, I do think it sounded more of a safe pop album. I know The Beatles are more capable of better music than this.

Early Beatles do nothing for me. Songs are boring and repetitive. If it wasn't for 1966 and on – essentially, Revolver – I don't think I would like the Beatles at all.

One of the beatles best, and I feel like this makes me lose a recent argument that I had regarding whether an album has to be "themed" in order to be 5 stars. Although there isnt any particularly clear theme for hard days night, the songs are all amazing and stand alone. 5/5

Just two or three weeks ago I raved about Abbey Road, noting that it was much heavier than I'd thought. Now this is the polar opposite of the Beatle-spectrum. So much poppier, so much less interesting, so much sappier. This album truly shows that The Beatles should always have been predominantly a rock and not a pop band. It has some really nice, fun rock songs such as I'm Happy Just To Dance With You and some of the sappiest stinkers such as If I Fell and And I Love Here. A lot of it comes down to the vocal performances which have bite on the rock songs but are extremely lackluster in the poppy love songs.

Good album. Very catchy tunes. Lyrical content gets a bit repetitive. Most songs seem to be written for young people.

Surprisingly enjoyed this more than I thought I would, and the following songs Spotify played based off the album were great. Would probably seek this out again.

4.5 Honestly I’m surprised by how much I liked it. It reminds me of the other bands from that era I like and less psychedelic. Some songs are kinda whatever Beatles fare but there are really cool songs here. ‘Anytime at All’ has that rocking spirit that I love about The Who. I’m far more interested in the deep cuts here than the hits. I learned that one of my favorite jazz songs is actually a cover of ‘And I Love Her’ which turns out is also a pretty cool jazzy tune itself. ‘Tell Me Why’ makes me think of the Happy Days theme and not in a good way. The last song has such a lovely melody and really nice harmonies, and almost leaves me feeling melancholy. There might be something to these knappy haired kids from England. There’s honestly more on this that I like than I don’t. 1 Ah fuck here we go. I have a complicated relationship with The Beatles - in that I generally really don't care for The Beatles. However, after sitting down and giving A Hard Day's Night a good listen... Yeah not much has changed. This is The Beatles at their most bubble gum-poppy, and I just really can't say I see the appeal. A band not yet fully hitting their stride. This sounds of the era…. Yet to discover their mojo!

Album 1, 1000 to go! What a place to begin! Having had the Beatles playing in the background when growing up (courtesy of parents), we had the double "Blue Album" CD covering their most well known hits from the period 1967-70 so familiar with songs from the latter end of their band career. It's great to listen in full to some of their earlier poppy/folky tracks, which I didn't really spend a lot of time listening to when younger. Regardless of their two distinct former and latter sounding periods as a band, the Beatles will always have a special place in my memories.

A Hard Day's Night - The Beatles ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Initial Impression: A Beatles' album I hadn't heard prior to starting this. Expecting it to be poppy. Hard Days Night - I really enjoy the percussion in the background I hadn't heard before. Classic. 9/10 I should have known better - pretty solid track. digging the harmonica 7/10 If I Feel - Meh. Just seems like an early power ballad. Not awful, not great. 4/10 I'm Happy Just To Dance With You - I don't know if the Beatles inspired the Hollies or vice versa, but it sounds like that era. Second favorite song on the album thus far. 8/10 And I Love Her - Eastern vibes - soothing. Tie for best song on album so far? (I'm a sucker for that off beat wood block ) that tasty guitar solo too. 9/10 Tell Me Why - Big Sound, love the piano. Honestly, this is an ideal Beatles pop song. 8/10 Can't Buy Me Love - Fuckin' Classic. If you don't get it I don't get you. 10/10 Any Time At All - Another of those Hollies sharedspired songs(?) Pretty poppy. Not quite a hit - clearly as time has told. Aside from the big vocals from McCartney it's pretty weak. 6/10 I'll Cry Instead - Another one I haven't heard. Kind of groovy in an almost US country way. Love the walking bass. Don't really love the song. 5/10 Things We Said Today - Eh. This reminds me of a lot of 60's music. It's not better or worse than most of it. 5/10 When I Get Home - This song feels like a Beatles building block. They take this sound and use it later and make it great, but it's still in it's infancy here. I'll bet it would be great if I hadn't heard the rest of their discography though 6/10 You Can't Do That - Copy my "Ticket to Ride" but don't make it too obvious. (I don't know which came first) 6.5/10 I'll Be Back - I like the salsa vibes. Good track to close the album out with, nice fusion of pop, the 60's sound, and then a bit of pizzazz. 6.5/10 Final thoughts: This is a great start, but things get much better from here. I'd rate this album a 6.5/10. It contributed to some classics, but far from my favorite Beatles album and far from my favorite album period. Can't buy me love is the highlight.

When comparing to other Beatles' albums, it's definitely not that strong lyrically and sonically. However, as it is, the album has some very nice Rock and Roll songs that I like. Fav songs are A Hard Day's Night, I Should Have Known Better, And I Lover Her (fav), Tell Me Why, and I'll Cry Instead. Again, not my favourite Beatles record but I appreciate some of it.

Automatic five stars because I own this album. I bought this during a class trip to Ottawa in 2002, I’m pretty sure from the Rideau Centre. These days, I don’t listen to it often but I do still like it. I don’t think there’s one weak song on the album. This is the fourth album that I already knew before today.

Decent Beatles album with some classic songs. Kinda sits on the fence for me. There are Beatles albums I like and dislike more than this.

A pretentious-free honest straight up rock pop album. Amazing what the Beatles could from the beginning. I know nowadays songs like You can’t do that are impresentable, and with good reason I guess but it’s an almost 60 year old album! Give it a break and enjoy the sound of simpler times, also, Can’t buy me love and the title track rock hard af. I wonder how this album will sound once they make the “stereo 2024 mix”, for me the top was the Mono edition from 2014

Genre: Merseybeat 4/5 Finally, my 156th album generated is the first Beatles album I've received this entire exercise. A Hard Day's Night, while not their biggest album, and while not necessarily showcasing the best of The Beatles catalogue, it's their biggest showcase at the time of the true power that was held by the best selling songwriting duo in music history. Lennon/McCartney are the songwriters credited on all 13 songs here, a first for The Beatles and a landmark effort for Pop Rock. Not many groups or artists could boast to have written every song on their record, and certainly not many who did could point to the success that The Beatles had with their songs. A Hard Day's Night, the title track that landed them a #1 hit as well as a #1 movie, is a classic from the very first chord, and is a perfect example of the perfect pop song, right down to its iconic fadeout. The rest of the album, especially the first half (the songs featured in the aforementioned movie), are some of the best from the Early Beatles' era. From other pop rock perfections like the other #1 hit Can't Buy Me Love, to unsung heroes like John's loner anthem I'll Cry Instead, John and Paul finely craft a genuinely wonderful and memorable collection of songs. Paul's somber ballad And I Love Her is exquisitely sung and arranged, the hard rockin' You Can't Do That features some classic 3-part harmonies from the boys, and songs like the moody outro I'll Be Back, or the simple yet effective If I Fell, serve as hints of their future forays into folk pop music. Overall, this album isn't seamless, and won't be everybody's cup of Earl Grey, but for what it's worth, this is a damn good pop rock album. The movie is truly great too, if anybody is interested. Both are very worthy of checking out. Love these Brits.

Early Beatles is still good, but not the greatest out there 🤷

On ne peut pas reprocher aux Beatles de faire de la mauvaise musique, c'est toujours à minima agréable. Mais cet album était comme beaucoup assez banal malgré tout. Malheureusement, je sais déjà qu'au moment ou je presserai sur la troisième étoile pour valider mon vote, le vote du public afichera lui la note de 4, synonyme pour les Beatles de présence d'un autre de leurs albums moyens au pavillon Baltard.

It's buck wild how much great music the Beatles put out in the 60s. This album is stellar, and it isn't even close to my top five Beatles albums. There's not much else to say about this album. It's good from the very first note. It would be nice if they wrote fewer love songs, but that's the early Beatles for you. Well worth a listen 4/5

Love it!

Some early beatles can be fun in small amounts

Funny that this is probably one of the weaker Beatles albums. This album is fantastic, some great catchy songs and the Beatles becoming the Beatles. Cool rhythms and feel. Lyrics are a bit juvenile and the solos aren't anything too great.

And I Love Her

It's the Beatles (red best of Beatles, so rock and roll rather than wild experimentation Beatles). Side A is a bunch of all time classics with very little filler. Side B is a bunch of filler with very little all time classics. I'm only this harsh because they are that good.

Moptoppery again, some great tunes on this first soundtrack from Richard Lesters film which helped to define the Fab Fours public personalities. See Peter Jackson's "Get Back" TV series to get a sense of the "Real" Beatles. Highlights on this album the Title track that takes me back to my childhood, "And I Love Her" (The first bass line I ever learnt. "The Things We Said Today" (A Classic), finally "You Can't Do That" a tour de force of early Beatles songwriting. A great power pop album, that was influential on both sides of the Atlantic. (There would have been no Monkees without Dick Lesters' Beatles films!) Rightly on the list in my opinion.

I think we can all agree the Beatles are one of the greatest bands of all time, right? Then we can agree this album doesn't stand up compared to their older stuff. It should probably be on here, but it's not their best by a long shot: the songs are all variations of "I love my baby" or "I miss my baby", with some descriptions of very chaste romance. Compared to their later stuff, this is child's play. Favorite tracks: "A Hard Day's Night", "Can't Buy Me Love"

Do these guys ever do anything wrong? No. A great album. The sound is pre-experimental Beatles, so it may appear boring for a regular listener. I, though, find a "vintage" beauty in their classic sound. John and Paul create some godly catchy love lyrics, they never leave your mind. Jangly guitars, sometimes harmonicas, all thes combined together create another pop-perfected masterpiece of The Beatles.

goodness, "and i love her" is possibly my favorite beatles' song. it's so wonderful and tender yet simple. learning that per paul, george was responsible for the guitar riff in that song made my day. their hits on this album are undeniably brilliant. "a hard day's night" always gets me moving! the other songs are nice to listen to. i don't think there's really a bad song in the bunch. but it's definitely early beatles and i can't get as excited about it. perhaps i'm unfairly comparing to their later, more exciting music. despite that, it was a nice listen and i appreciated hearing some deep cuts.

I like this album...but I don't love this album, as a standalone or really as a piece of The Beatles' discography. It is fun and catchy, and an incredibly significant album in the course of Beatles history. That said, I would put most of the songs on this album in the "good" but not "great" bucket. The particular flavor of 60s pop on display on this album is always kind of hit or miss with me, and this era of Beatles just wasn't my favorite. I'm rating this a 3/5, but let the record show that I'd put it at like a 3.5/5, if I could.

Shows the versatility and the progression of the Beatles’ song writing that the same band would go on to record Revolver two years later and the previous year their first two albums were made up 40% of covers.

Finally! Some Beatles! It was of course a fun listen. And... er... rating it is pretty tricky. The thing is, "A Hard Day's Night" was one of my least favorite albums by the band. Yes, least favorite. And yes, "was". Although "And I Love Her" is the very first Beatles song that I love, as well as the reason why teenager me dived deeper into their discography despite the geo-blocks on YouTube during those times. Listening to it again, it's much better than I remember. Considering the fresh sounding tracks with infectious melodies and simple structure, it's not hard to see why these boys set the music scene on fire during their time. "A Hard Day's Night", their first all-original album, written while constantly touring and making non-music projects, is probably the epitome of their early works, their early musical force at full power. Their early works are pretty tricky to rate. But regardless of how I approach this, it doesn't change the fact that early Beatles albums have this kind of raw, infectious energy that I love. Those albums, including this one, have a few minutes of fillers and are not as mind-blowing as their later works, but I will keep on coming back to them to just sit back and enjoy some music. And because of that, I guess this album deserves a five star. Two classics and two five stars in three days, what a nice week!

I have a soft spot for this album because I watched this movie so many times at the height of my "Beatlemania" (hey, we were all cringy high schoolers once). That opening chord on "A Hard Day's Night" is legendary. However, for the album as a whole, its weak points are just a tad bit too skippable and uninspired ("You Can't Do That" being one of my least favorite Beatles songs). That being said, "I'm Happy Just to Dance With You" and "If I Fell" are absolutely stunning and some of my favorite tracks.

Really great, but not their most enduring. This blurb from Apple Music is perfect: "the first glimpse of our modern idea of the Beatles: safe but a little strange; warm but with shades of bleakness; a band that experimented tirelessly without ever leaving the mainstream."

I both like and dislike this album. I think it's the issue that I've heard all of these songs innumerable times and they've become banal. I tried to imagine what it would be like to hear this album for the first time and it's solid.

Charming, powerful - both timeless and of its time. Their first record free of covers doesn’t offer too many hints of the breadth of genius that lay ahead, but a great listen all the same. And I Love Her stands out, supported by pop classics like Cant buy Me love. Beautiful

If you don't dig this album then you probably don't dig the Beatles, man. Personal favourites are the title track, And I Love Her, Things We Said Today, You Can't Do That and I'll Be Back. Cracking stuff.

The Fab Four at their purest. Not an album I’ve consciously listened to for years - I’m generally a late Beatles man rather than early - but you can’t deny it’s brilliance. Lacking in sophistication in places but at a time when most bands needed to supplement their own material with covers, this is Lennon & McCartney honing their craft as songwriters. An album that will be studied alongside the work of the classical composters in years to come. Nothing on here is less than an 8/10 with the obvious hits that are nothing short of perfection. I will be revisiting soon. Consciously.

Beatles unforgettable tunes live in my heart forever.

Though a tad old, Hard Day's Night is a great album and their best before Rubber Soul where The Beatles had a string of perfect albums. Really the only dud on here is When I Get Home and have to be in a good mood to like Tell Me Why and I'll Cry Instead. Apart from that every song is fantastic, with the title track being my favourite. I'd also have to recommend the Hard Day's Night movie and some of the bloopers from the album on YouTube as well for a good laugh.

Classic! Iconic! Wonderful! This was my favorite Beatles CD when I was a kid and it holds up with their 60s rock style that they mastered!

I do respect what the Beatles did for music but this album, in particular, sounded like a single 30-minute song. There wasn't any variety to what they were doing. Still an enjoyable listen.

This is nowhere near the Beatles best. Many of the songs sound the same, very simple melodies. I totally understand the significance of the Beatles in music over the last several decades, so I appreciate this album for that reason. “Can’t Buy Me Love” is about the only standout song on this record. Nice to listen to, but nothing of major note.

So, this album was good. But just good. Not really what you'd expect in hindsight from a band as important as the Beatles. Certainly enjoyed it thought.

For the longest it was a battle between Rubber Soul and Revolver as my favorite Beatles album. But now there's a third contender. The Beatles find their songwriter voice on this album, which I believe is their first album um of all original material. And what material it is. The songs are all excellent and the band is so damn tight. Step aside Revolver, move over Rubber Soul there's a new contender to the crown 5 🌟 🤩 ⭐

The Beatles have never put out a bad album. Of all of the older Beatles records, this my be my favorite. The standout songs are "And I Love Her" and "Things We Said Today"

Early Beatles just isn't that exciting when compared with the later stuff but its all important in the overall story I guess. I've never seen the film, maybe that would give the songs more context. Still well done to the lads for starting to write some original songs for a change.

An album built on a foundation of traditional rock'n'roll, but with added minor chords, pop hooks and rougher edges. Mark these boys as 'ones to watch'.

Bit spooky that we get our first Beatles album on the eve of the long awaited Disney documentary 😱. Coincidence? Yes. I'm not convinced I've ever listened to Hard Day's Night all the way through. It's a very sweet sounding album. Enjoyed getting stuck into this and I look forward to their future offerings!

At the same time that is very easy to listen to anything from "Beatles", it's very hard to evaluate it. This is not an absolutely perfect album, but almost everything that I had to listen to for my whole life had some influence on this kind of thing, so it's absolutely important for my life. I'll finish with 4 starts and without a lot of comments to avoid any injustice. This is the (almost) first album from the band and they have some problems.

Early proof of genius pop songwriting. 60s pop rock'n'roll at its finest without studio experiments. Arguably the purest of the great Beatles albums.

A Hard Day's Night is what can only be described as Absolute Classic Beatles. Interesting to find out that the first half of the album was a part of the soundtrack from a film of the same name. It was their first album to feature entirely original compositions. It was such a delight to listen to, it felt so comfortable and familiar to listen to, even though this is the first time I have listened to this album in full. Best: A Hard Day's Night; Can't Buy Me Love Worst: Can't pick.

Classic Beatles, though I greatly prefer Revolver onwards. Some new tracks in here for me.

My fave Beatles albums are the later ones when they locked themselves in the studio and performed audio alchemy. But this is great. A lot of "love" songs but if you listen there is always a little twist or darker undertone. It wins stars just for the opening chord which distills down the entire emotion of that first song into one Draaaannnggggg.

I don't often listen to early Beatles anymore. I've heard the songs a million times, and I definitely prefer post 1965 Beatles, but this was really great to revisit. A few random observations: - The harmonies. So amazing and great to hear John and Paul working together. - Paul's ballads And I Love Her and Things We Said Today. Just beautiful. - They didn't give Ringo a song on this one??? What the heck? I thought he got a song on every album. - I know it's not possible, but I feel like I've never heard When I Get Home before. It's pretty much a throwaway song, so maybe it just never stuck in my head. - Some of these songs are just so exciting. Tell Me Why is a great example. Great album, shows a band progressing in leaps and bounds. Still not up to the level of their later years, but very good. 4 stars.

It's about damn time. 136 albums and I finally get a Beatles album. I calculated the probability and there was supposed to be a nearly 2/3 chance I should have already got a Beatles album by now. But finally. This album is underrated. I said it. Why? Just look up people's reviews on this page or on reddit or wherever. They'll say, "Oh well I prefer this later Beatles album" and of course you do, the innovation in instrumentation, songwriting, and production spirals out of control following Rubber Soul. But you can't unfairly give this a lower rating cause you have to compare it to something entirely different. Anyway... This is my favorite pre-Rubber Soul album. No covers. Full on McCartney-Lennon pop songwriting genius from start to end. There's something to love about each track. Let's start with the songs I think are perfect. "A Hard Day's Night", "If I Fell", "And I Love Her", and "Can't Buy Me Love". Between superb vocals, complex chord progressions, impactful lyrics, and a fistful of energy and punk, these songs reflect exactly why they're so loved. It's hard to even come close to mimicking these songs, even if you knew their secrets. There are some interesting quirks here and there, like how in "Any Time At All" it feels a bit empty, and yes it is supposed to have more lyrics, but it doesn't detract the power in Lennon's voice, McCartney's high pitch support, and catchy melodic tune. Even "weaker" songs like "I'll Cry Instead" have interesting chord changes and instrument choices that don't make for a dull experience. The Beatles are a pop sensation, and I swear it's really hard for me to write what I love about Beatles albums. I discovered the entire Beatles discography when I was 10, and I never listened to any other album until I was in college. I kept playing those same albums on repeat for years, and even now they're my most frequently visited. I can sing along to every song in their discography. So how can I tell this is worthy of the 5 stars? I can measure how much I like each song but how excited I am to sing along to each of them. So a song like "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" I don't feel much a push to sing along to, and likewise "I'll Cry Instead" I'm the least enthusiastic about. Is this a bias toward catchy pop songs? Well, after knowing all the lyrics to the Abbey Road Medley or the unusual picks in Sgt Pepper or White Album, I don't believe that's the case. Just the ones that really grab my attention. And with this album, more so than any other pre-Rubber Soul album I can belt all the lyrics with some degree of intense enthusiasm. There was nothing that even came close to The Beatles in the early 60s. At least later in the decade you had rock albums by Rolling Stones, Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, Love, etc... but not this early. You were dealing with the likes of Bobby Vinton and Andy Williams... who cares? This album more so than the other pre-RS displays their incredible level of innovation that everyone would follow and adapt to. It's important not to disregard these early Beatles albums. When I'm looking for classic rock n roll, early Beatles albums will always be the first place I look.

Third Beatles album and the one that changed music history by using complex compositions and complicated chords in pop/rock songs (like the famous opening chord of A Hard Day's Night). Also the first Beatles album with only original material and no covers.

I'd consider myself a big Beatles fan but I think this was the first time for me listening to this the whole way through - think this one ranks somewhere in the middle, I think you could call it the best of the worst? Which, being a Beatles album, is still better than 90% of albums by my reckoning - not quite up there with Revolver, Rubber Soul, Sgt. pepper, the White album and Abbey Road (and arguably Magical Mystery Tour), but not a million miles away - you can definitely hear the beginnings of the sonic experimentation that developed throughout the above albums - the opening chord to a Hard Day's Night is iconic, And I Love her is great (especially George's guitar), and it has some bangers like Can't Buy Me Love and You Can't Do That. A big step up from the first few albums for me, and probably more interesting than the next two before Rubber Soul landed, this is a really solid contribution to their discography

Top of the pile of the early Beatles albums, and also technically a soundtrack. John has a lot of machismo throughout the record, while Paul seems a bit more coy and smitten. You start to get a small taste of things to come as the songwriting starts to get more focused.
