Reviews (page 7 of 13)

Pity he’s left Spotify

Neil Young is one of those guys where you always know exactly what you're going to get. I can see how that would annoy some people (it annoys me with a lot of artists!) but with Young I'm just like "this is great!" Down by the River is the album's highlight and, I assume, the reason the album was included on the list. Great vibes.

great album. 4/5

The first of the Neil Young - Crazy Horse collaborations, and it would probably be my favorite if it weren't for the violin track. This thing is anchored by four monster tracks, so I'm giving it a four. Best track: Cinnamon Girl

I'm hit or miss on some of his albums with Crazy Horse but this one is great. Just solid rock and roll with Neil Young's trademark vocals. Can't argue with that.

The only reason I'm switching to Apple Music is so I can listen to Neil Young. Maybe that will fill the empty hole in my soul.

Vietnam war album

Enjoyable!

Quality NY&CH fare, Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand are great

The first signs of how good Neil Young was going to be over the next few albums.

8/10 i'm not that big of a neil young fan but this one was really nice

I liked a couple of the songs, especially some of the guitar work. 7/10

First time listening. Enjoyed this far more than I expected and, at the very least, enjoyed every song. I love the variety overall, and the rocker "Cinnamon Girl" as the opening cut is mighty impressive. However, some of these guitar solos on the longer tracks are overindulgent, though still very good tunes overall. I don't hear as much emotional variation in Neil's singing on Everybody Knows This is Nowhere as I do with the actual melodies he sings...even with his vibrato in "Round & Round" sounding almost guitar-like. Pleased with this one.

Very solid rock album that can brighten up the mood. Not much to say about it, just a good vibe rock album. 7/10

Neil brings the jams. Only realized this predates After The Gold Rush today. Knew the hits and love them and the filler tracks less so. Cowgirl , River, and Cinnamon girl. What’s else is there to say.

Nice mellow tunes that still have a tangible edge. I like the fuzz on the guitars

Love it. Loved the weepy violin. 8/10

I know people complain that there is too much Neil Young on this list, but he just has so many great albums. This is one of his best. 4 stars.

The back half of this album is the best, when the band is really cut loose and wails. Neil was just getting started on his run of true classics.

This album is very ahead of it's time

Solid rock album. Guitar-driven Standouts are "Cinnamon Girl" and the catchy "Down by the River"

So annoying that the legend isn't on my preferred streaming service, but youtube to the rescue. Proper this one - couple of timeless classics

pretty good

Pretty solid album, a few of the songs are a bit weaker. -1 star for having to listen to it on youtube

i didn't know that

I liked the vibe but the sound isn't what I normally would gravitate towards. Would be nice for a hike or something?

Neil Young is a folk rock classic who will surely never die

This was my first Neil Young project and I’ve gotta say I really liked it. I bought it on cassette a few weeks ago and it’s a special album. I’ve always had a deep love for Psychedelic music. This album has plenty of jamming, but you can really hear the folk/singer-songwriter influence from Neil Young. The reason why I wouldn’t give this 5 stars is because I hate Neil Young as a person. Terrible guy that made some great music. 4/5.

It is a shame this is not in Spotify! Remember listening “Everybody knows this is nowhere” when I was a kid. It brought sweet memories. The rest of the songs are amazing too. Great production, awesome spirit.

Throughly enjoyed this early Neil Young & Crazy Horse album. Can’t wait to give it another listen and hear more from Neil. I miss those Bridge School Benefit days.

Was between 4 and 5... I liked Rust Never Sleeps more

Might be my favorite Neil young album we've listened to so far

Cinnamon Girl is a forever favorite. Really good album, great songs, but I’ll admit the guitar solos can get to be a bit for me. This is a return-to record for life, though.

Really good pop album, some standout songs. Cinnamon Girl is great

I like Neil Young

Great album

Always enjoyed this one. Not super consistent but definitely some great stuff.

fun groovy

Neil Young is a fat baby for taking his songs off of Spotify. Obviously I don't mean that, I'm just annoyed I'm going to have to listen to his album on youtube(the platform on which Joe Rogan is actually relevant). Besides being a big fat stupid fucking baby, Neil Young has a reputation for being Neil Young. The name overshadows his music; I've never actually heard any of his songs before last month. Although I have heard 'Old Man' before and I'm excited to hear his other songs which are probably pretty good too. So the album was very groovy, baby! The first two songs had excellent guitar riffs, very shaggalicious! Nice album all around.

Great album

Some greats that have aged well

This was good. I am not crazy about Neil Young (like some people), but I enjoyed this album. I would consider purchasing this since I can't stream it.

Another essential album from our good old Neil Young. Full of feelings, honest and heartfelt playing... Again, I will not rate it 5 stars because it's in my top 5 Neil Young's albums, but it would deserve it? I'm just tryin' not to be the fanboy here.

Round and Round is the only mediocre song on the album, the rest have that Neil Young, folk storyteller, weary road traveler vibe. Really enjoyed listening.

Keep your dumb opinions in the music and you’ll get a five next time, Neil.

I knew essentially nothing about Neil Young, so I'm glad this has enabled me to actually give him a listen. I really like the vibe of this. It's a nice gentle listen, but it's really good musically, and there's plenty of stand-out songs.

Really great album! Probably my favorite from Neil Young we've had so far, love that the tracks have a folksy Americana feel but also included some really engaging electric guitar solos. This is a side of Neil Young that I haven't heard before, not sure how much to credit Crazy Horse for it. Regardless, really dug this one, not too many tracks in total but they definitely left an impression. Favorite tracks: Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, Round & Round, Down by the River, Cowgirl in the Sand. Album art: I take it that's Neil leaning against the tree? Not a bad picture at all, I kind of like how grainy it is. Rather unassuming for the music within, which I'd call quite adventurous. 4.5/5

The highlights of every Buffalo Springfield album had been Neil's songs. He takes full advantage of his newfound creative control, with his new backing band Crazy Horse supporting his vocals and guitar flawlessly. There's a good mix of soft folk songs (Round & Round), hard rock songs (Cinnamon Girl), and those between (Down by the River). I'm a fan of the overall swampy aesthetic with the psychedelic twinkly guitar coming from all over the place. Some love and some hate his voice, and I'm part of the former. Somewhat country-inspired, a bit raunchy capable of tackling feelings of desolation, remorse, or wonder. The songs evolve in all sorts of directions, and I had fun guessing what'll happen next. The production sounds incredible, although it suffers from the 60s style of stereo mixing where you only hear certain instruments coming out of one ear. Only 7 songs, but they take as short or as long as they need, and they all have different styles that all seem to work in their own ways. Favorites: Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, Round & Round, Down by the River, Cowgirl in the Sand

Not sure on this one. Nothing I dislike, but nothing I adore either. This might be a side-effect of only ever hearing how good Young is, but never actually having heard a single song of his. Cinnamon Girl is pretty cool, an ancestor to music I prefer. Having listened a bit more, it's more enjoyable. Guitar solos are tastefully done, skilful without being ostentatious. I actually really like the long tracks, they never feel boring or unnecessary. That can't be said for every song on the album, but the album itself is short enough that even the weaker songs in the back half don't ruin it. Overall, pretty good, just needed some more time with it. 24/10/22

Admittedly not a huge Neil Young fan, but this album seems like a really concise distillation of his whole thing. I love the long, dirty guitar jams.

We used to play "Down By The River" on the jukebox all the time to get our money's worth. I like Neil when he has Crazy Horse putting some real heaviness behind his folk and country roots.

Beautiful album. I need to explore Neil Young's back catalogue a bit more

Quite interesting

Pretty good! Less "reedy" that I think of Neil Young's voice being usually and that made it a lot more enjoyable than some of his new stuff I've heard

It's a solid Neil Young record. Some classics here.

Great. Will probably go back to

Great rock record from one of the all timers. NY&CH > CSNY > NY solo

Aijai, taattua Youngia. Vika biisi etenkin timangia.

Neil Young writes great songs.

This was a great album, loved this and quite a few songs I'd never heard before.

really relaxing, it would go to my playlist if spotify allowed me T-T

Really great sound. Shorter, to the point, and beautiful songs. Weirdly sexist last song but hey, it was the 60s.

It’s a pity that his albums are removed from spotify, although I understand his decision. Loved the album though. It’s just so easy to listen to, I could put this album easily on repeat. Favourite songs: - Down by the river - The losing end

Yeah something about Neil Young just clicks with me super well. It's not my favorite project from him, but call it a solid 4.5. Favorite tracks: "Down By the River", "Cinnamon Girl"

Ol' Neil got real close to the perfect mix here. I envision him licking his finger to use it like a weathervane and thinking his next album needs that little something that only he could think was missing here. But with gems like Down By The River and Cowgirl In The Sand, no one is complaining.

Nice melody through out. Classic Neil Young

I mean i liked the only song that is available in spotify

Not sure I ever listened to this album straight through before.

I love Neil Young, but so far the albums that have come up I've found to be alright or very much one or two excellent tunes and then some filler. This album however, was solid through and through. Neil's in rock mode here, less folk and some serious jams on the two long songs. Cinnamon Girl is a banger, but was surprised how much I recognized among the other songs. Definitely an album I would pick up.

Good stuff; easy to listen to.

Liked the guitar solos, catchy choruses Sort of rough cut, unrefined feeling

Mellow very of its time some amazing songs

Only I can listen to this album one song in Spotify. But it's enough for to know that Neil Young is a referent. Nice.

could not listen on spotify. found on youtube.

Hard to find album. Great guitar solos, easy to listen to. Mellow, relaxing.

Endast Down By The River tillgänglig på Spotify. Den var bra. Coolt gitarrsolo i högra örat.

Very distinctive voice and musical style, which can lose impact after a while. No tracks I knew before, and nothing immediate or catchy, but a solid album of classic Neil Young songs.

Niel young is a new favorite glad im doing this! Some parts really rocked my block off

Nice to listen to

Neil Young is great. Not my favourite of his though, some of the songs are just too long and meandery.

🟩 70 🥇 Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere 🥈 Cinnamon Girl 🥉 Cowgirl in the Sand

Neil Young & Crazy Horse at their best!

It wasn't available on Spotify, found on Amazon Music: https://music.amazon.co.uk/albums/B002DPHOF4 Neil Young was one of those that I kept meaning to listen to, but never did. I thought he'd be too folky for me. With this album, I was genuinely surprised, I thought it was really good - great musicianship. I'll need to re-listen in future, I suspect it's a constant grower. An optimistic 4 from me.

My favourite Neil Young album.

+ for hest på albumet

Took me a while to listen bc it wasn't available on Spotify, but boy, do i regret taking so long... Bluesy country-rock that only late 60's/mid 70's could provide. The title track is the one that stands out the most for me, but the album as a whole is quite an experience.

I really dig it

Man, that riff that starts Cinnamon Girl... The vocals that come in are off-puttingly mild. That said... damn this is a good album. More filthy guitar on Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand.

Nice melodies, some songs drag on a bit too long. Overall, a calming listening experience.

Mix of excellent and average tracks.

I really liked this album. Very chill but with some upbeat songs mixed in. Very easy listening. Good to chill to.

A little bit country, folk, blues and rock’n roll. It’s no doubt that Neil Young is a great singer/songwriter. It’s not really my style, but my hats off to him and the obvious influence he’s had on may others musicians due to his own musicianship.

Neil Young really knocks it out of the park with this album with three incredible songs: Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand. I like the other country/folk songs less but when he rocks out there's nothing like it. The guitar counter play and solo on Cowgirl is simply brilliant and iconic Young.

I like a bit of Neil Young: good songs, harmonies, distinctive mournful voice. Bit of iffy playing here and there but otherwise I enjoyed it.

Great enough stuff, but nothing really pushes it all the way up to 5

The melancholy, the rock sound infused with the tiniest bit of country, Young’s distinctive voice. It’s a solid album, but the guitar solos feel a bit indulgent.

Of NY’s classic albums, this one stands the test of time. It’s funny, I forgot how good it was until I grabbed my headphones and dropped the needle (no Spotify…). Cowgirl In the Sand and Down By the River are two of my favorite songs by him. Both are long “jam” style songs with guitar solos that feel more like an attack on the guitar as opposed to a virtuoso playing juuuuust the right note at the right time. All in all, a fantastic album.

Neil and Crazy Horse at their early height here, The classic "Cinnamon Girl" and the title track which are still on Neil's Live set list are great songs and were an auger of things to come from the maestro of Country Rock and such an influence on Grunge 30 years later. Danny Whitten, (Pre the experiences that invoked another Neil Young Classic, "The Needle And "The Damage Done") on guitar and some great harmonies shows off his brilliance in these roles. "Down By The River" is another great track and a classic in the genre, again Crazy Horse were the right people at the right time for Neil 1969 and still are today even though their have been many iterations he always gets the right people to play/sing with him. The final track, "Cowgirl In The Sand" another classic Neil Young standard, again highlighting his influence on both (Believe or not) on Punk and Grunge music. A great Album rightfully on this list. I love it!

Lovely stuff, Neil is a quality dude

Some of my all time favorites here, and of xourse the two lengthy linchpin numbers of Down By the River and Cowgirl in the Sand. A coue of dull spots hold it just shy of masterpiece status for me but still essential.

Neal Young is stretching his legs on his second post-Buffalo Springfield solo disc. His first collab of many with Crazy Horse is a great peak into where he will take his music. His songwriting stands out here - Cinnamon Girl, Down By The River, The Losing End… etc are all sonically not something that you'd think a singer / songwriter would put out in 1969. This popped up on the tail end of NYs battle with Spotify, and I'll repeat what I said last week with an Eric Clapton selection, it's okay to seperate the asshole from the music when they take stands you don't agree with. 4/5.

Bit ironic I got this a week after the Neil Young vs Joe Rogan fiasco so had to watch this with ads on YouTube. This situation at this time is still going on so was intrigued to see if I would miss the music that disappeared from Spotify. From this album at the very least, Young feels missed as I would love to have some of these songs saved. The acoustic and electric guitar parts are really good throughout too. I was reading the wiki article for this and found out Young wrote half the album while having a fever. And those songs (Cinnamon Girl, the title track, Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand) are the best on here. The rest are ok but not as good. A very decent and fine little album.

Pretty good in the background

Knows his stuff

Easy to listen to. Great album for the era

different to what i normally listen to

Pretty good. I liked the guitar better in Ragged Glory but I think Neil Young's voice is more suited to the slower ballad type songs.

Lovely, and just the right amount of moody

The more I listen to Neil Young the more I like him. Haven't listened that much - yet

Not my favorites by Neil Young but was still decent

When Neil’s on a bummer, that’s my shit. When he feels like ‘rocking’ (Cinnamon Girl, Down By the River), not so much.

Pretty good. I don't have the mental energy right now to do a proper review. But this is a good one, you'll have to trust me.

Another excellent album that I haven't listened to in a long time. Enjoyed most of the songs and loved a few of them.

2nd November 2021 Started late in the day when back from the gym. Finished on the 3rd at work in the office. Some absolute stunners (down by the river) and some slow country, beautiful stuff.

This is a fine album more immediately accessible than others of his on the list. Great songs, good playing.

A consistently nice album lacking that one amazing track to elevate it to a 5. "Good Neil" to quote Mr Brown.

One of Neil’s best - a joy throughout and has Down by The River which is a bona fide classic

Cinnamon Girl. That's a great way to kick this off. Nothing grabbed me as much as that one, but these were all good, all had their own personalities. And they all had Neil's personality, which I guess is good, too. There's also a dog on the cover, so you know this album is okay, probably.

I think if I turn into an old dude who only listens to Neil Young records, it’ll probably be a very happy retirement for the most part. This one is a little light on the falsetto driven ballads that I love, but still good from start to finish.

pretty relaxed? dude has a pleasant voice, the music is chill lyrics can be cringe male lyrics but it was like. the 1900s. who cares

Interesting but old

Not his best album but still worthy of a 4 star

Rólyndis Neil. Gott stöff.

Fantastic album

I listened to this one 3-4 times over the course of the day yesterday.

Such a unique sound. Neil Young has such a personality in his songwriting and creates an album so authentic in comparison to Dylan and his CS&N peers. This was such a cool album to explore, I can definitely see now the influence he had on grunge 2 decades later. I have been sleeping on Young!

Decent album that showcases Neil's Talent, although I would have personally preferred some more electric guitars

First 3 songs didn't really do anything for me. Last 4 were almost all great all the time.

This did not have any of the handful of NY songs I know well and there are some whoppers on here. Cinnamon Girl took me by surprise but my favourite 2 are the long ones - cowgirl in the sand and down by the river (unbelievable).

A good listen. Very chill, with a few excellent tracks.

Anything Neil has ever put his name on feels like sandals and unbuttoned shirt kind of weather.

For only having 7 tracks, this album still feels satisfying. One I would call a dud—“The Losing End” because I don’t like that country shuffle beat and any song that uses it—but everything else is A+. Favourite track: “Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)”

This album from 1969 sounds like it could have been recorded yesterday. It's clean and dirty, relaxing and tense, all-around classic dad rock that surely paved the way for the music genre. "Cinnamon Girl" opens with clappy percussion and catchy guitar riffs. This so-called "cinnamon girl" sounds like a manic pixie dream woman who enjoys nice things in life with her man by her side. "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" is short but shares the sentiment of wanting to get away from the rat race, a feeling I'm all too familiar with... "Round & Round (It Won't Be Long)" is actually quite long at 5:54 and features Robin Lane on harmonizing vocals that invokes the feeling of life slowly passing by as we try to do the things that give us purpose "Down by the River"is about 9 and a quarter minutes long and features head-nodding instrumentals from Crazy Horse that makes me want to play pool in a seedy, friendly, yokel's bar while coming together to sing along "down by the riiiiiiiver, I shot my baaaaaby" "The Losing End" is a relatable breakup song -- "my tears fall down like rain" is a classic similie that doesn't ever feel good, but we all go through it “Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)" sounds like a cry for help and somewhat of an apology letter to someone Neil Young may have wronged or let down that features powerful and woeful strings (is that a fiddle?) that feels bad but also feels quite nice "Cowgirl in the Sand" closes the album at 10 minutes and 6 seconds long and starts off with Crazy Horse setting the scene, seemingly telling the listener to "strap in" for this one. Lots of instrumental breaks that let the song tell its story with lyrics that Young wrote while suffering from a 103 degree fever about promiscuous femininity... or maybe it's really about beaches in Spain? This album is 21 years my senior and I can only sit and wonder how influential it was. As I said, it sounds like it could’ve been recorded yesterday. Fresh sound that transcends music gimmicks and pop culture, and simply ages like fine wine.

I like Neil Young. I have his "Harvest" and "Harvest Moon" albums. I think I like at least something from every one of Neil Young's colaborations, but I couldn't tell you when a song is from Neil Young & Crazy Horse, or when it's just a Neil Young song. "Cinnamon Girl" and "Down by the River" were the familiar tracks for me from this album. This felt like a solid album that I would listen to again.

Really enjoyed this despite personal feeling towards Neil haha. Cowgirl In the Sand is a great closer. Underrated amongst Neil songs.

Top album

Really enjoyable listen

Didn't realise I liked Neil Young as much as I have enjoyed the last two albums of his we have listened too so far

Was very very surprised by this. I don't really like country, but I do like rock, and this was a great fusion of the two. The choruses were pretty phenomenal Saved: Cinnamon Girl, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets)

Kijk!

Think I might have found my new favourite Neil Young album.

Jeez there are a lot of albums from 1969. Luckily this is a goodun. Neil manages to avoid his annoying squeaky traits and just writes solid folk rock songs. Cinnamon girl and down by the river are stone cold classics too. 4/5

Always been into Neil. This was no "Harvest" or "After the Gold Rush," which I imagine we'll see on this list, but it still has some great Neil Young tracks on here. I only knew "Cinnamon Girl" coming into it, but that was a great demonstration of what Crazy Horse contributes to a Neil Young album. I love his folksy singer-songwriter vibe, but having Crazy Horse swoop in and add some crunch and texture to his songs really gives him some more depth and range. "Running Dry" and "Cowgirl in the Sand," were my other two standouts. Really loved the old-timey fiddle/violin on "Running Dry." I was feeling very, on the old dusty trail, with that one. Excited to see some more Neil, or a little CSNY later on this list.

fav tracks: cinnamon girl, down by the river, cowgirl in the sand

Solid Neil Young music for people who like Neil Young.

Really good. First 4 star award. Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand worth the 4 stars.

I like Neil Young.

I'm a big fan of Neil Young. Pretty cool folk, country and rock mix. Relaxing vibes.

I really like folksy Neil Young. All around felt like a solid album, but the jams in songs like Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand were the standouts for me!

Good stuff

Rockin guitar, bluesy guitar, steel guitar, country guitar, my kind of musico. Loved most of the songs, not a perfect 5 stars because the slower songs disappointed a bit. Can feel the Pearl Jam influences here. Love track 2, never knew it was Neil Young!

This is a fantastic album by Neil Young! I hadn't listened to it and glad I did. Great songwriting, singing and guitar!

Fine album. Sounds like Neil Young

Through and through pretty great.

solid stuff from Neil - C

A couple of classics on there. Most of it I really liked. Some of the lyrics I wasn't super keen on and it felt like it dragged on a bit on the longer songs -- I'm not a huge fan of +5 minute songs, so 9 and 10 minute songs lose their appeal to me.

Neil Young really puttin in some work

interesting

Excelente. Solos de guitarra e vocais memoráveis. Ouvir novamente. Destaque para Down by the River e Cowgirl in the Sand

Excelente. Solos de guitarra e vocais memoráveis. Ouvir novamente. Destaque para Down by the River e Cowgirl in the Sand

Hard to give a genius like Neil Young anything lower than a 4.

I thought some of the songs would drag on but they didn't. Nice musicianship.

very good folk record

Good Album. Solid

It's just Neil Young.

really like the last one a bit more melodical

need to re listen. i liked it.

212. nice

Quite nice

Neil Young's voice is much less offensive when he's harmonizing with someone else.

Not too bad. More accessible on first listen than some of the other Neil Young albums which have come up so far.

Dad approved

Not really like it

the long tracks are cool

Loved it

Yep, that’s Neil.

I only knew Cinnamon Girl but enjoyed most of the other tracks. Simple songs which sound ahead of their time. Would have preferred more shorter songs but may find the longer ones grow on me with further hearings. I will listen again. Once had his double "Live Rust" album which I'd forgotten. Hope that one shows up here at some point.

Extra star for the Winnipeg the dog on the cover! All album art featuring a real pet deserves bonus points. I enjoyed listening to the record, a little too much guitary blues wangling for me but wouldn’t turn it off. (4 stars if including Winnipeg bonus!)

I enjoyed this but am glad it wasn't longer

Enjoyed this. Cinnamon Girl is a standout. Will listen again in the future. 3.5/5

I didn’t love the last album by this Duo so hoping this one is better! I didn’t hate Cinnamon girl as an opener. The title track then definitely had some nice bits to it. It felt like it had a bit of urgency with its guitar and steady drums. Round and round (it won’t be long), was in fact very long. Jokes aside, I didn’t dislike it. I thought it was quite pretty, it just went on a bit. Down by the river was the perfect track to have on in the background while I was doing something else. The loosing end had a pretty decent groove to it. Running dry was pretty boring. I’ll give cowgirl in tbr sand a pass as a closer because there was some good guitar and a decent melody. 3/5 ⭐️ 173/1089

Round & Round (It Won't Be Long) - favorite so far i like parts of Down by the River as well Losing End sounds familiar Love the production and guitars throughout Liking the second half of Cowgirl a lot

Fine solid rock music with great guitar skill

I don’t think I am ever going to feel the love for Neil Young that others seem to have, but he’s definitely one that the 1001 list has really opened up for me. There’s definitely some ironies in this for me in that a track titled Round & Round (It Won’t Be Long) was the one that really outstayed its welcome, yet the two longest tracks at the end of sides 1 and 2 were the ones I appreciated most. In both of those, I would have happily taken more of the winding solos and loose jamming feel. It’s always going to be the vocals that drag these down for me. I have definitely mellowed to them a bit, and I can’t imagine any other vocalist or style that could fit this better, but it’s telling that it’s the meandering soloing stretches that I like most on here.

Good stuff. Mr. Young earned his spot. 3.8

it was ok, liked the guitar soloing

Down By the River подобається. Running Dry теж окей.

Middle of the road for me

fine? kinda boring? kinda cool?

Fav song: Cowgirl in the Sand

Much like most of Neils work there usually 2 good to great songs and a bunch of filler. 3 stars. Cinnamon Girl is a great song and it sounds like the precursor to what was good in the garage/grunge movement.

Solid hits, Down By The River is one of my top 3 for Neil Young! Never heard a proper album outside of his greatest hits.

Not bad. Better than the last neil young album we listened to.

Everybody knows this is nowhere - me gustó, down by the river también. En general no es muy mi estilo

Perfectly average album. Nothing great, nothing bad.

Probably the last insufferable Neil Young album I've heard so far

Yeah it's alright. This album has some solid instrumentals from Crazy Horse, but I don't think it's their best. Neil Young sounds fine too, so overall just fine.

typical Neil. not my genre

For how much I feel that there is too much Neil Young on this list, this was actually a fairly enjoyable listen for being a folk album. It's nothing particularly special, but it doesn't impose itself too much. idk what else to say, pretty good for him. I guess Cinnamon Girl is quite interesting.

Not a fan of NY, don't really bother with any of his discography. This ain't bad, but not really for me. The guitars are raw and crunchy throughout which is great, but vocals aren't that impressive.

doing this in the summer of '69 might have been impressive, but now.. well it didn't hit me at all, but it's a relaxing listen sure old review upwards. new review downwards. 1001 albums to hear before you neil the young in you 111# this is a cool joint, i don't hear nothing really special about it (on a second revisit) but this listen was a bit more pleasant, its a chill record with some long tracks that kind of deliver.

Amazing start to me, but in the middle the quality dips, it feels redundant and when you have a 7 track album it better be all smashes, which it is not. I still like discovering his personality and writing, and he probably will receive all different kind of scores, but that one felt a bit lower

This was just fine — apparently he wrote three of the songs while fighting a 102 fever and it does show

No conocía este disco. Me gusta Neil Young.

Surprised by how much I liked parts of this album. Cinnamon Girl is brilliant.

At this point in the list of all but written off Neil Young. I like a song or two here and there but I’ve never enjoyed listening to a full album by him. This album isn’t amazing to me but I did enjoy it enough, I wasn’t sick of it by the end. Overall a pretty solid album.

The opening riff made me feel this record was going to be more exciting but it turned into the same mediocre folk rock. I just don't get the hype around Neil Young. Maybe he was amazing because of the time

Good album

It started out good. Niel is one of my favorite guitarists. It definitely fell off and could have been way better.

Down by the river is fire. pretty good album.

This is pretty good. It is solid music but not the absolute greatest work from Neil Young. Favorite track: "Down by the River"

Country / folk rock. Cinnamon Girl is pretty good but the rest seemed just ok. A bit too simple and slow for me.

Pretty good

This album was a mix of country, rock, and folk. I got a breezy feeling as I was listening. Folk seems to be the most prevalent sound here, and Neil Young does that well. I thought "Round & Round (It Won't Be Long)" was the most beautiful song on the album. I also liked the long musical interludes, they were interesting to listen to.

The seventh Neil Young album we've gotten....so far. Not his best. Not his worst. I never thought I'd be able to say that at the start of this list. Hard to be objective and I'm so tired of Neil Young.

I’ve always liked the music more than the voice

It was okay. Mostly boring. 2.7

Average.

Decent. I prefer Neil without CrazyHorse for whatever reason. But this isn’t bad, but not great either

The best Neil Young album. He voice isn't whinny yet. Great song writing.

It's a Neil Young album. It's got guitar twanging and great songwriting aplenty, but it did not wow me.

Did Neil Young create this list or something? I do like the albums but kind of crazy that he has so many on this list. Another cool classic rock album with some folkish elements. Some long sections of jamming but not too drawn out. Enjoyable listen overall

it was an okay album, just not really the type of music i personally like !

Favourite Songs: Down By The River Cowgirl In The Sand

I don’t hate it but again, mediocre singing…

An early example of Neil Young’s music and first album with Crazy Horse is a good one but maybe not easential. There are some classic songs on here but I think that in these early incarnations they might lack some fire of later live recordings. Most of the material here comes across a little tame and the recording sounds a little too dry but you can’t deny the distinct voice and guitar playing of Neil Young. So definitely check this out and keep going through his great discography.

возможно это просто для американцев что-то вроде нашей пугачевой и каких-нибудь наших разных ВИА running dry напомнило мне что-то между house of the rising sun и i need some sleep (песня из шрека 2🙏)

I listened to this album a ton when I was a kid. It is solid Neil young album of what looks like many more to come. 7.75/10 Top song The losing end

Cinnamon girl goated, I really like how this is mastered, good album to listen to, just a pleasant listen

Like many other Neil Young albums, there are a handful of colossal songs ("Cinammon Girl", "Down By The River" and "Cowgirl In The Sand") intermingled with a lot of just-OK stuff. Even the good songs are burdened by way too much aimless soloing, also.

Neither lyrics, nor vocals were anything special. Best track: “Round & Round”. Low 3

From a previous Neil Young with Crazy Horse review: "I have never been a big Neil Young fan, despite Pearl Jam's worship of him (and my one-time worship of them.) I don't DISlike his music, and I like him in interviews, but his stuff just doesn't do much for me." This album was different for some reason. I think it didn't really sound like Neil Young to me, and that was a positive. For what I think is the first time for me with any album in this project, I played this again a second time when it finished.

while i love neil young, it didnt stand out to me. i liked cin girl tho

Soft folksy/country rock. Parts of Everybody Knows sounds like proto-REM. It's not bad. But it does get old too. Best track - Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere 3 stars - probably quite important for 1969, but today it sounds a bit samey

p157. 1969. 3 stars. Starts off with a banger, then falters badly with a succession of half-finished songs. Saved from 2 stars by some incendiary guitar work. Not his best work by any means.

It's ok but not more.

I do like Neil Young and there's not much else to say. But I did only mildly enjoy this album.

Really liked the first song Cinnamon Girl, but after that everything kind of melded together.

I don’t usually get on with Neil Young but I thought this was ok. I still don’t like his voice but that was offset by some very good guitars.

This was fine.

o bob Dylan do bem

Cinnamon Girl - 4/5 Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - 3.5/5 Round & Round (It Won't Be Long) - 3/5 Down by the River - 2.5/5 The Losing End (When You're On) - 3.5/5 Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets) - 3/5 Cowgirl in the Sand - 3/5

this genre of music (white american country?) is not exactly my jam but i mildly enjoyed 2 of the songs on here

Not sure the Crazy Horse element does much for me. It made me want to revisit Tonight’s the Night. I feel like I didn’t appreciate that album at the time and it deserves more attention.

"Cinnamon Girl" sure is a great riff, and features great harmonies by Danny Whitten. Unfortunately, it's also very repetitive and doesn't go anywhere, which holds true for most of the rest of the album. Strong harmonies (which serve the added bonus of masking Neil Young's voice a lot of the time), good riffs that don't go anywhere...kind of like Neil Young's guitar solos, which are each predominantly one note repeated over and over. Still, most of the music is fine.

Bored me a little, but not bad

Bit droney in places but shout out to crazy horse

1969. They recorded the album just as they were getting to know each other.

Still liked more than white stripes

For whatever reason, it always takes me a few minutes (or songs in this case) to acclimate to Neil Young’s voice. But once I do, it always kind of bowls me over. That may be why, but I was far more taken with the back half of this album than the front. Maybe the first few tracks just need to grow on me, but Running Dry specifically was a stunner.

A solid album, I enjoyed it quite a lot, especially when the songs got slower

- i like the instrumentation - once again not entirely my thing but mostly enjoyable to listen to anyway - i like the instrumentation in down by the river a lot - favorites: round & round (it won't be long) - rating: 3/5

Apparently Crazy Horse is a band, not a guy! I should listen to Americana...

enjoyed higher 3 ig but blurring together again uh ohhhh

yea this was fun, liked the musical mix, neil young has such an interesting voice p solid, but not my fave from him 3.5ish

Another album where I wanted to like it more, but it washed over me

Me gustó aunque un poco desordenada

Not for me but a nice chilled listen. Would probably listen again

Not for me

Holly - First songs are really strong - this was maybe to its detriment because it set a high bar. A few songs felt needlessly long with instrumental that didn’t always hold my attention. I would relisten to most though, and now I know I like his sound. Rating - 3/5 Sophie - I liked this a lot more than I expected to. I had bad connotations associated with Neil young so I was pleasantly surprised. Some are just too long for me to listen to regularly but I appreciate a strong instrumental/ guitar solo. I think it had a strong start and a strong finish but lost me a little in the middle. All in all though I enjoyed it as an album and would listen again. Rating 3.5/5

3/5. I don't really care for Young, but this album has some decent songs on it. Production and instrumentation are solid, and Young puts out some good vocal delivery and rhythms. His voice isn't pleasant and he lacks the brilliant lyricism that Dylan and Cohen used to compensate for their own unimpressive singing, but Young does well enough by having some good riffs and harmonies prop up his music. Songs are listenable for the most part. You get some really good guitar work here and there. Some songs go on way too long. I shan't be returning!

I put it in the background. It never drew me so much to focus on it, but I also never bothered to switch it off. I should listen with more focus, but also I don't care enough about Country music and Neil Young, and did not care to dive deeper into his music

Album très chill! Met dans un bon mood

I mean. It was fine. I'm just so sick of the 60s pleaseee dear godddddd please go back to the 80s. Or something more contemporary. I want more R&B or genres that aren't 60s rock. Please for the love of god @ this game

Neil Young does the upbeat rock songs so well and I enjoyed starting today’s album with Cinnamon Girl. He doesn’t shy away from the slower songs but I think his talents are more prevalent in the big rock tunes where his guitar abilities shine brightest. A worthy addition to this list of 1001.

Neil Young is a gifted musician but he didn’t let that get in the way of writing the songs on this album. While this features a trio of classics, the rest are pretty underwhelming. The aesthetic with Crazy Horse is to record without rehearsing, in an effort to capture the authentic ‘feel’ and ‘vibe’ before anything becomes routine. Unfortunately, this experimental method causes a lot more failure than success, so for every ‘Down by the River’, we have to endure a few tracks like ‘Round and Round’ and ‘Running Dry’. Lastly, the vocals are poor throughout on this one (I’m especially looking at you, backing vocals on Everyone Knows) but the instrumentals are tight and intricate, the real saving grace on this one.
