# Album Name: Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere # Artist: Neil Young # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Down by the river is a top top tune - 5/5. The rest just passed me by. Ive not been able to hit it off with Neil Young. This album did not change my mind. DBTR saved this from being a 2 if im honest. # Top Tunes: Down by the river # Would I listen to it again? No

This generator did not awaken a Neil Young fan inside me.

Gostei bastante de down by the river,o resto meio tanto faz

Favourite song was “Down by the River”. Easy listening album but probably not one I’ll return to.

Like another review said, this album is "simple yet pleasant." Didn't love it but there's nothing to hate here.

oh Neil… love the guitar solos tho

Everybody knows this is nowhere : ça fait vraiment western.

soft, good to have in background while working, not wowed though

Helt ålreit.

I liked this one ok. It was more rockin' than I expected too. 3.25/5

I expected - indeed I really wanted - to like this album a lot more than I actually did. I’m marginally familiar with Neil Young both from really young childhood (America/Horse with No Name) and like his voice. A sort of Morrissey before he was. Unfortunately this just didn’t speak to me. A little too country, too jangly, too Crazy Horsey (weighed down harmonies)? I LOVED the extended jams in Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand no doubt…if it had been a collection of these types of songs perhaps a 5. In the end I found the album as a whole underwhelming. Maybe an instance where heightened expectations killed the experience? 3/5

This is a good but not great album from Neil young. Easy to listen to, but there’s better. Specifically this is a great example of the “mellow country-rock” he was known for. I liked it but I didn’t love it. I would listen again but I don’t think anything about it was memorable enough for me to be able to recall it when thinking of things to listen to. It’s a good background sound, and I loved cowgirl in the sand more than the previous songs. Generally a good album but that’s all!

Nothing too engaging for me here. Its alright other than the good songs being 48 minutes long. Its like the song plays for a minute then its 4 minutes of doodling around and then another minute of the actual song and back to fucking around again. It makes it really hard to keep my attention. I feel like some of these songs got edits for the radio unless ive just been unobservant my whole life which is very possible. Its OK and fine and alright

Down by the River- great song!

I don't get bothered by the simplicity of Neil Young like many people do. Is it a lazy guitar solo? sure. But it works...

Solid album

It's fine, but not something I would consider returning too soon. The first song is pretty good, and I liked the last two.

It was aight.

Neil Young is cool. Not much else to say.

I find this record to be quite charming, and it is thank to the smooth way of singing and how the guitars do a great job at pairing with the voice. In result, this album has a pleacent and relaxing vibe which is nice. Nevertheless, I'm not confident enough to give this album 4 stars, as there are some moments that I don't think work as well as the bests parts, specially the longest songs, which feel a bit tiring toward the half point.

Double review (for Odelay by Beck bc I missed it yesterday): Odelay: Just 5 songs too many for listening to Beck. Loved a few of these but the rest was mediocre. Love the samples though 3/5 EKTIN: Pretty beautiful album, would need to listen again though to give a definite judgement bc this was after listening to two other albums. 3/5

some good tunes

Neil Young’s always been around. He’s been that spectral character with those lyrics that were referenced in that letter. Or that mercurial artist who would perform at my honours thesis supervisors’ birthday parties. Or this curmudgeon-guy who said stuff about illegal downloads or the quality of vinyl or something. For me, he’s been shorthand for “I’m a serious person” for as long as I’ve been a conscious one. Which is all to say – with “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”, I finally have a chance to put to rest another absolutely ridiculous suite of assumptions I’ve been porting around. The album’s so much more of a jam than I’d have ever expected; rambling, sweeping compositions that might at times threaten to stay a little bit too long but – and thank god – kick around long enough to inspire innumerable guitar bands and future indie musicians (a great many of them among my favourites). “Cowgirl in the sand” stands out (and reminds me a fair bit of “My My Hey Hey”; it’s the melody and softness of his vocals, I think) – a lucid dream of a song (and proof that intermediate shredding is well and truly enough if the backing track is doing its fair share of the lifting). Neil Young’s having a moment again now, so it might be I’ve come around at just the right time. He won’t always be around, after all.

Its fine, it did not really evoke strong emotions or whatever, also not sure what extra crazy horse brought to the table

Solid all the way through. Didn’t hit me like the last Neil Young album did, but still a lot of good songs. All good, but nothing jumped out

Vibes: middle of the western desert, no living creatures as far as the eye can see. Evokes melancholy, raw gritty hopelessness but will carry on anyways.

I didn't mind it but not my thing

Pretty decent project. I really like the album cover. I think Neil looks rugged in a laid back way. I also quite like the song down by the river. I've decided to grade a bit harder. Im probably not going to relisten so this has got to be a 3.

ANOTHER FUKEN NEIL YOUNG ALBUM. COME ON BOOK.

I groaned seeing another Neil Young album. I dare to say I liked this. Maybe I'm in a particularly good mood or maybe this is better than the previous offerings. It's not going into my rotation, but I'll tell my dad about this.

It's ok; giving a little bit like bowie

This is the earliest Neil Young album on the list and it's surprisingly heavy. I honestly did not know Young had dabbled in hard rock so early on, I've only known him as folk musician. Not one of my favorites of his, probably not essential, considering there are so many others on here. I don't know much about Crazy Horse, other than that they are Young's recurrent backing band, but I do like their song "I Don't Want to Talk About It" from their self-titled record, released not long after this one. Key tracks: Cinnamon Girl

Enjoyed it. Classic sound. Likely won't listen to it again though.

It's fine, the first and last song we're pretty good and the rest was pretty boring but the last song made it a 3 star

Starts out strong with "Cinnamon Girl", then some decent lesser-known cuts, then "Down by the River". Then a couple more "meh" songs, then "Cowgirl in the Sand". So, some classics mixed with Ok. Another one where I'd like to give it 3 1/2 stars.

Quality, not really standing out for me

Not bad. A few real gems. Neil is always better with Crazy Horse. 3.5

This album has some great, iconic Uncle Neil tracks. But honestly, it also has some misses. The songs that don’t hit aren’t terrible by any means, but they are starkly different from the rest. I would have liked a little more consistency but overall it’s still very good.

solid!! great bass

This will be my final Neil Young album to review. Well, my final Neil Young solo or Neil Young & Crazy Horse album to review; I still have that Buffalo Springfield album waiting for me. I’ve mostly enjoyed Neil’s albums so far. His albums have gotten a smattering of three and four-star ratings from me, with only Tonight’s the Night coming in at a two-star rating. I have pretty moderate expectations for this album, but I’m holding out hope that this will be my first five-star album from Neil! I thought Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere was fine. The guitar playing was really solid throughout the album, and I thought the vocals were pretty good too. Other than that, though, there wasn’t a lot about this album’s music that stood out to me. I didn’t find the songwriting to be particularly strong on this album; I don’t know if that’s because a lot of these songs didn’t have a lot of lyrics, or if I just didn’t care for the subject matter. As far as individual songs go, I liked the first half of the album a bit more than the second half. I think that’s because I got kind of bored with this by the time the second side started up. I enjoyed “Cinnamon Girl,” specifically the guitar playing and the hand claps. The guitar sounded fuzzy, which I really liked, and I thought Neil’s vocals were good too. The backing vocals on the title track were great, and I liked the rhythm that the main vocals followed. The guitar playing was strong too, just like on the lead-off track. The acoustic guitar on “Round & Round” was really beautiful, and it was a nice change of pace from the fuzzier electric guitar on the first two songs. Other than that, I don’t have much to add about this album. It was enjoyable to listen to, but there really wasn’t that much remarkable about it to me.

not my favourite

Those crunchy guitar tones! I mean, I like this record - it’s got all the things I look for with Neil Young’s songwriting. He crafts a mean tune, what can I say. Down by the River’s probably my fave track. Some of the tunes ramble on a bit, which isn’t the vibe I’m after today… 6/10

I like Neil but these aren't his best songs

Very good

Im typically not a huge Neil Young fan, but I actually enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Some good hits, and pleasant all around

Some very good songs. and lyrics but overall as an album, not sure there is anything that makes it significantly better than a number of others. Like any prolific writer/musician, Young produced a number of fine albums and this is certainly among them and contains some popular hits as well, one of my favorite being "Down by the River". But do you need to listen to all of them before you die? Well--you probably should if you are a big Neil Young fan. More importantly, if you are a guitarist, you should study how he plays as he definitely makes some notes far more expressive than other bands do.

6/10 Better than I expected. Raw hippie hard rock. Recording as live certainly gives that raw (unpolished?) vibe. Not sure how much I love the vocals and guitar of Young. A couple of songs are very self indulgently long. Best: Cinnamon Girl

It was fine but nothing that struck me as memorable.

I really liked the first half of Down By The River, something about the bass, but the long song overstayed it's welcome. Cinnamon Girl was familiar and catchy. I respect Neil Young, but not something I would seek. Very laid back. Better a song or two at a time.

It's hard to know what to say: Neil has a distinctive voice that isn't necessarily pleasant, and yet it works and it is hard to imagine anyone else's voice on these. There's a couple of good ones, and then some that just ... are.

It was OK. Very Neil Young.

Kinda mixed bag and I’m not a big fan of ‘Cinnamon Girl’ but that ten minute song at the end is pretty epic.

Rockin', enjoyable. I've had kind of a hard time getting into Neil Young, but this felt approachable. I liked the noodling.

cinnamon girl isch reecht cool cools riff. so rock. everybody knows this is nowhere au sehr en coole song ich find sini stimm ide höchene afoch mengmol chli nervig. round & round seeehr cooli chords a-giti töned suuuuper. down by the river geili harmonies und lustigs solo höhö. macht huere wenig aber funktioniert. schochli lang. aber cool moody funktioniert. running dry schleppt sich etz chli dohii. giige cute. aber song semi geil. sehr weich. cowgirl in the sand wieder en lange jamrocker hä. findi cooler als die seichte. d band tönd cool sie grooved recht. schochli noodly das ganze. 3.

Classic Americana. Wonderful guitar work. 3.5/5

Now Neil, why would you go and shoot your baby down by the river?? What were you thinking??

There are some solid songs on here but all of the endless jamming was too much for me

Decent enough late 60’s country rock with an as-live feel. Guitar interplay is really good.

Düdelmusik - aber nett

Cowgirl in the Sand is a great song. Rest ok 3/5

I’m not really into extended guitar solos, but of course Neil Young is one of the best songwriters we’ve got.

Only really know some solo tracks so was quite different to what I was expecting with the full band. Pleasantly surprised. Nice tempo, groove and fairly catchy. Really enjoyed ‘Round & Round’. ‘Down by the river’ 🥱 enjoyed second half of the album much less than the first. First three songs good. Next three meh and last one a bit of a better note to finish on. 4* for first 3. 3* for next 3 and 3.5 for last so (3/3.5)

Sorry Neil, I really enjoyed After The Gold Rush, but aside from Down By The River I didn't feel much from this

This was a mellow listen with nothing that really stood out, but also didn't necessarily put you off the album. A solid 2.5 middling album.

Good album. I typically enjoy the folk/country rock sound and this album was no exception. Nice guitar riffs throughout. Fav track is probably "Down by the River". 3.5/5

It's fine. Felt a bit hit and miss. Don't really get the hype. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.

Another cool folksy album. I like the electric guitar mixed in. I haven't listened to much Neil Young before, but I might add it to the road trip rotation. Cowgirl in the Sand is really good.

Cinnamon Girl is really good, but overall I'm not too crazy about this album. I liked it but not sure if I'd go back to listen to it again. I see the appeal though.

Decent.

Amazing Americana but doesn’t stick

i love neil young as much as the next canadian, and he made some great records with crazy horse, but i've never really dug this one.

One thing I have learned through doing 1001 is that Neil Young is bang average

A couple good songs and a couple clunkers average out to a so-so listening experience.

Not my favorite Neil young.

3 not too bad, prefer some of his other stuff

I don't know how to explain it but this is the most Canadian album I've ever heard. Cinnamon Girl is really credible rock and you can hear the grunge elements clearer maybe than even Ragged Glory. Everybody Knows, Round & Round are boomer nonsense. Down by the River is really good guitar work and pretty funky the four minute long guitar solo is welcome relief from Young's lyrics. Side B opens with more ponderous country-rock with The Losing End. Running Dry turns the ponderousness up to 11 with a sad dirge. Cowgirl in the Sand is again pretty good because you just get to bliss out to some nice guitar solos and the vocals are a bit spaced out. While I'm not exactly charitable with Young I gotta admit hanging out at a jam session with him would be pretty good. I think the issue I have is with how predictable he is. Maybe that's due to the saturation of Neil Young (especially this era) in western culture and the iconic nature of '69 rock, but its like I know what the next chord is going to be every time. You can often map out two or three other more interesting chord changes that he *could* take, but you know 100% he won't take them. Even his more out there stuff like Trans is still really recognisable. I will say the 2009 remaster sounds really slick though and maybe another reason I'd hang out with him is to nerd out about sound quality.

Already a fan of Neil Young, though I didn't get him until I saw him live at a festival, same festival at witch I saw David Bowie. I was not looking forward to seeing him, but he was amazing. I was too keen on this album some tracks are way too country which along with RnB are my least favourite genre

Nice album. A lot of the songs are too long maybe.

Even on the remix, the audio levels left something to be desired.

Cinnamon Girl is good Title track is cute Love the wistful harmonies on Round & Round Down by the River and The Losing End are dull Love the freaky violin on Running Dry Cowgirl in the Sand isn't bad - nice harmonies

So many long songs! I quite liked one song and was going to save it on Spotify but it went on for 9 mins...way too long.

Tricky one to rate this. Some of the lead guitar parts I absolutely love, but then there’s the song “Round & Round” which I’d give a 2. Also not keen on Young’s voice.

I really enjoyed the upbeat nature. Clean guitar.

52/1001 While I'm still not convinced, this is a far more enjoyable listen than any other Neil Young LPs I've encountered so far. From the proto-glam stomp of Cinnamon Girl to the off-kilter vocal harmonies of Round & Round, this album benefits from being a bit more rough around the edges than the likes of Harvest. It peters out and reveals more of its alt-country roots as it goes on, but the first couple of tracks are resonably interesting. Not a fan of his voice, nor capable of understanding the widespread reverence for Young, but this is not too bad, with some thinly-spun late-60s garage/psych strands running through it. Just scrapes a three.

Down By the River was good, but that's about it I'm afraid

STOP I DONT WANT TO LISTEN TO NEIL YOUNG. NO MORE cinnamon girl- 5 everybody knows this is nowhere- 5 or 6 round and round- 6 down by the river- 5 the losing end- 5 running dry- 5 cowgirl in the sand- im not listening to all of this. ive given neil enough of my time. 5 its not that bad but theres no reason neil young needed 7 albums on this list

Rätt tradig men blixtrar ibland till. Bästa spåret var det sista.

14/1001 This is a prank right?!? Someone’s messing with me? 14 albums so far 4 Neil Young, and 3 straight days of NY. Ugh! I swear if I hit send on this review and another f*&$ing Neil Young album pops up, Im out. I know there’re several more to go, but I better not see them until alum 400 or later. Every Neil Young review for me is the same. Check out my previous reviews. FFS!

Didn't really do that much for me honestly. Felt like the jamming wasn't particularly special or memorable and just like a rock band album, lacks some of the interesting production choices of Harvest.

Cinnamon Girl saved it from a 2

3.5, like the first half more

Not bad not really memorable.

Good album, classic Neil Young. Meanders a bit

generic guitar album. I'm sure it was great when it was released

Pre-listening thoughts: Neil Young album number 1/8. It was about time since we’re over 250 into this challenge. Still no sign of Bob Dylan yet. We still have all of his stuff left. Lord have mercy. Post/during listening thoughts: well this is certainly Neil Young. And I only knew like two of his songs before this so why in gods name are there eight albums with him on this list. Anyways I liked it well enough. I think some songs were way too long but I’m not sure if this is a high 3 or low 4. Right now I’ll go with a 6.5/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: Cinnamon Girl, Round and Round Least fav tracks: Down By the River

Kinda boring overall but one truly incredible song in the middle wow. Also just can’t be mad hearing Neil young be awesome.

Cinnamon girl, down by the river, and the last track were pretty good, but not great. The rest was filler. Not my favorite neil young album.

Running Dry is a standout

Honestly, not too hot on this one, at least not upon first listen. To me, it has some Neil Young's most unfocused, scattered, and uninteresting production paired with lyrics that just don't grip me the same way as, say, 'After the Gold Rush'. I wouldn't say Crazy Horse added too much for me either - they sound good jamming, sure, but the extended jams of songs like 'Down by the River' or 'Cowgirl In the Sand' just didn't work with Young's style for me. Not to say those jams didn't belong, they moreso just felt tacked-on, directionless, and pace-breaking. I found that I enjoyed them more in smaller doses. I still want to make it clear that I didn't hate this; in fact, I enjoyed my time for the most part. And the title track (which has my favorite lyrics here that seem to be tackling the directionless or mundanity of an individual's day-to-day) and 'The Losing End (When You're On)' were two really solid cuts.

good, country vibes. this would go hard on a long road trip through the tennessee mountains. the long, vibey guitar solos are pretty chill, but can get repetitive. The songs are pretty similar too, so i wouldn’t think i would put this on in my daily life that much. fav song: round & round

Title song: Neil doing a slight Dylan intonation. All the music all around him - girl singers & rhythm - all good. I like "The Losing End (When You're On)."

Never going to be my favourite album ever, but a decent listen. I enjoyed the guitars. 6.5/10

I just haven't clicked with Neil Young. Neither After the Goldrush or Harvest did anything for me. I liked this one a little better - possibly due to low expectations. There were several good songs, although some others were too country for my taste. I think ultimately I just don't find his voice powerful/emotional enough. When he sings "Down by the river I shot my baby", I just don't believe him.

Nice album. Will never be my favorite but I didn't mind listening to it. 'Cowgirl in the sand' was a great end.

Can't complain but not his best album

Solid album one of those type of albums to listen to when walking around a lake 7 out of 10

I feel like this album has aged really well. It still holds up, nothing sounds dated at all.

i like crazy horse but neil young is meh. also, i used to think (yesterday) that crazy horse was just a native dude that neil young liked to collab with

This doesn't do a lot for me. Some nice harmony in places, but not really my cup of tea. Unobjectionable as background music but will never seek this out

Cinnamon Girl, River and title track are great but find the rest of it to drag a bit. Makes me want to go listen to Deja Vu.

Better than expected. What Elliot Smith would've sounded like if he wasn't always depressed.

For me the album goes back and forth between good songs and just okay songs. You get a strong start with Cinnamon Girl and Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, but then it slows things down with Round & Round and thats where I start zoning out, but come right back with Down by the River. And then this just repeats for the rest of the album. If it was all the better songs, I'd rate this higher.

Nice relaxing stuff but I'd put this on in the background before I'd actively listen to it again.

Not bad like usual. Neil young usually does a really good job of blending rock and folk.

some really nice and mellow tunes can't complain

Country and rock - Instrumentals are pretty good, acoustic and electric guitar are nice - Vocals are average and so are melodies, nothing special

Fine album but nothing special to me

Most of this album is forgettable in the sense that if you’ve heard NY from this era there isn’t much new going on…with two notable exceptions: 1.) the raw pain emanating from his physical ailments that comes out through the writing, and 2.) cowgirl in the sand - one of the greatest solos ever. Listened to: bus to Providence. Favorite track: cowgirl in the sand

7/10 Favorite Tracks: Cowgirl in the Sand, Round & Round Least Favorite: The Losing End, Running Dry

Guess who's back !!! It's Neil Young & Crazy Horse, I almost missed them. The end of "Cinnamon Girl" was insaaane the guitar solo but with just the 2 first songs this country vibe is back again so the quality of the music and the melody is amazing buuut the country vibe isn't much my thing sadly. "Round & Round" was actually pretty touching, without any percussions it was pretty nice and I loved the chords of the main theme of the song and the lyrics were really beautiful. The rest of the album was not so bad, I'm not a huge fan of reallyyyyy long songs but these ones were really clean and catchy, the guitar's solo were good as well !

I know this guy! Last album of his - ragged glory - got a 3 from me. It also came out 20 years later (1990), so it's probably quite different. Pretty cool! Indeed quite different from ragged glory. Less adventurous i'd say ? But good voice, good melodies. 10min songs tho, too long for my 2025 gen Z attention span I feel like i'm giving so much 3s 3.5

⭐⭐⭐— — 3[.5] of 5 stars. It's a classic slow-burning folksy-bluesy-rocky album. In my opinion, a really solid casual listen. The guitar work on a lot of these songs is great (especially that 9 minute track), and the strings set up a really folksy, but emotional feel, especially on "Running Dry," not to mention his soulful voice. Yes, some of the tracks can run a little long, but when it picks up, it picks up. Love the energy on the opening track as well as "Cowgirl in the Sand." Overall, it's not bad, definitely influenced quite a bit of modern bands. I'm a bit on the fence between a 3 and a 4. Favourites: Cowgirl in the Sand⭐, Down By The River, The losing end.

Bit backgroundy

Solid album. Nothing super special. Lacked something in it but still good to occasionally listen to. 7/10

Nice enough

Somewhere between a 3 and a 4. Good morning music

Could deffo see myself becoming a proper Neil Young stan with time, but trying not to before glasto! Do think I prefer his none Crazy horse stuff though. Also think he’s always going to be a grower rather than an instant gratification type artist.

01) Cinnamon Girl - 8,0 02) Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere - 8,0 03) Round & Round (It Won't Be Long) - 7,5 04) Down by the River - 7,5 05) The Losing End (When You're On) - 7,0 06) Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets) - 6,5 07) Cowgirl in the Sand - 6,5 TOTAL: 7,29 (73/100) Current ranking: 247/450

As my first exposure to Neil Young, it was more drab and shapeless than I expected. The album just kind of came and went. Nothing was displeasing to the ears, thoughbeit. Maybe it's the kind of thing that grows on you. I am excited to hear how the boomer of all boomers develops on further albums.

Some of the guitar work is pretty awesome but this wasn't really my cup of tea

Started off well but went downhill

An enjoyable introduction to Neil Young's unique brand of folk, country, and rock which would evolve further in the years to come. A short listen, this record is a solid, enjoyable piece of work from Young and I've added several songs into my regular rotation.

Not my favorite Neil Young. Too much guitar solo and a bit depressing.

Great album.

very nice listen

Yeah. Nice,

I like the jammy bits of Down by the River, but i don't like shooting no one. Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere is cool. It's been months since I rated an album. It took forever to listen to this one i guess

like cowgirl in the sand

I like Neil Young & Crazy Horse very much, but i think they had much better albums.

Too many Neil Young albums on this list. I get it the guy was talented and made music, I'm assuming, people liked. Just like a few other artists on this list Neil Young is a little too represented. This album is fine and I'll say that Crazy Horse adds more to it then just Neil's solo work, but ugh this is the 7th album.... not including the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Whatever its fine, not the best, but not the worst.

Very good rock soul album from Neil. His voice carries through. Still not entirely my style though

Some hits that I didn't realize were Neil Young.

Cinnamon girl and other Neil young great hits

Pretty chill vibe, although some songs drag on a bit

Last two songs saved the album or it would’ve been a 2

where is this

Early rock album. Can understand how it was popular. Nothing particularly stood out to me.

Neil is an all time great, not his best work in my opinion though.

“everyone knows this is nowhere” is a mountain goats lyric which i did not realize was a reference to this album until now. i’m feeling a little betrayed by john darnielle. AND “cinnamon girl” is a lana song!!! never afraid to reference or not reference… that was nice! beautiful guitars but none of the gut wrenching lyrics that i expect and frankly crave from our neil.

some cool and groovy guitar and bass stuff happening. i don't have strong feelings about this otherwise

sun rising over your cabin surrounded by pines. Grab your flannel jacket and get into your two seater truck, pack of marlboro reds on the dashboard and a cup of folgers coffee. Driving through the hills window down.

Even if it's country and folk sometimes I could listen without getting bored... Guitar sounds awesome...

More Neil Young. Cool.

Never listened to his solo album before. It's really nice background music

I've always had an issue with Neil Young's voice. It just annoys me; it's all shaky, whiny, breathy and nasally. But then there's Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand that are pretty good songs, so he's getting a middling rating.

This wasn’t all that memorable which is a shame as I like Neil Young. Maybe a few more listens would do it for me but it’s a solid3 for now

Older Neil Young seems quintessentially three-star territory.

Still not a Neil Young fan, however the backing by Crazy Horse was just enough to keep this from dropping to 2-stars.

1001 Neil Young Albums to Hear Before You Die. In a vacuum, this isn't bad. In fact it's better than some of the other Young albums we've listened to. But, I still understand what value there is in featuring so many albums by one artist, while so many other great bands have yet to appear.

Good early Neil Young album.

I can enjoy Neil Young when he isn’t singing falsetto. This is an album I can imagine chilling to while relaxing in front of a fire. Good guitar work that sometimes lingers a bit too long on one idea, but does provide a space to zone out.

Surprised with how much I enjoyed this one.

S'aite. Good instrumentals and vocal work, but I couldn't behind them really. 'Down by the River' was my fave.

Decent. 3+

I am now convinced that Neil Young has gotten consistently worse over the time, since the albums I have reviewed up to now have gotten progressively better the older they are. I have actually enjoyed some of the tracks on this one, especially the electric guitar heavy ones. Also, Neil Young not being able to really sing doesn't stand out that much. That being said, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere still isn't an exceptionally good album, it just joins the mass of unexciting psych rock albums from the late 60s.

Decent, but long songs. I like the vibe tho

it alright

Some classic songs

never listened to this before , i like neil young’s voice and the tone of the guitar . not all great , but mostly. best track by far - down by the river 3

"Cinnamon Girl" and "Cowgirl in the Sand" were my favorites, but some of the other songs dragged on.

I’ve always avoided Neil Young in the past, mainly because I’ve assumed that he was an earnest hippy dippy folk singer due to his association with various permutations of Crosby, Stills and Nash. To be fair, this collaboration with Crazy Horse (not sure if that counts as cultural appropriation or not) is pretty good, adding some much needed blues rock guitar to his songs. Not sure about some of the lyrics on Down to the River though. Cinnamon-tastic!

I'm just...not that into Neil Young. Especially the boring kind of Neil Young that is on this album...

Songs i know: 0 Songs i like: a couple Reckon I could copy and paste my review for after the gold rush and whack it here. He sounds great, very 70s. No songs really stood out but a solid 3 if justice for all is the anchor. Mid to high 3.

Enjoyed. Some of the songs went on a bit too long

I generally perfer Neil Young's folkier stuff, but this is a pretty decent album. I can see it's influence on later rock artists as well. Why did he shoot a baby though? Seems harsh

He's just a bit too whiny for me to listen to a lot in one go

Sorry, I just don't get Neil Young.

Almost 300 in and this is my ninth CSNY-related album. I haven’t had a single the cure or the smiths related album yet. Whatever. However unenthusiastic I was when this popped up, I still enjoyed it. The two longer tracks especially. Almost a four.

Neil Young is just ok and preferred him more with CSNY. A couple of good songs on the album though, hence the upgrade to a 3.

He is alright and the album was alright clearly a direct relationship between the two

This is certainly one of the better albums that Neil Young has released over the years. It’s a bluesy/folky number that’s both catchy, and surprisingly raw. In a time period in the music industry where everything was getting a little more overproduced, this is definitely not. The lyricism is simple, but certainly effective at conveying love, longing, hope, and sorrow. It’s really quite a pretty album. “Down By the River” stands out as my favourite track on the album. 3*

I am loathe to donate whatever fraction of a cent of my streaming revenue goes towards Neil Young and whatever elitist, anti-scientific mumbo jumbo he’s cooking up next, but so demand the 1001 Albums gods. My personal feelings about the artist aside, this is a middling to decent… Americana? album? I’m going with Americana for this. I don’t have much to say about it. I liked the eerie violin solo on “Running Dry” although this was one of the weaker tracks overall in my opinion. The classic Neil Young sound is there, but the quality of songwriting is a step below that of what he would come to put out in the next several years after this album. I liked “Cinnamon Girl” best probably. 6/10

It’s ok

I am a fan of CSNY, and of the Young songs I have heard, I do like them. This album I don't think does it for me, unfortunately. Still pretty good though.

Didn't know who Neil Young was, still not sure. Album was okay, some great guitar riffs throughout, but just felt like it lacked something that made the album stand out.

Musically, very enjoyable. Felt myself drifting in and out of paying alot of attention to lyrics because they never felt captivating at all and partially because I was enjoying the guitar and drums alot. Will be listening to this again, as well as more Neil Young

HEEEERLIJK! FAVO: Round & Round, Down by the river, Cowgirl in the sand

Besides the songs "Cinnamon Girl", "Down By the River" and "Cowgirl in the Sand" just a solid Neil Young record.

Well... I tried. I Love Cinnamon Girl, absolute corker. And I thought maybe Crazy Horse could... take the reigns a little and reel in Neil Young's (for me, w a y too whiny) voice. Alas, that was not to be. and with two songs over nine minutes featuring his voice above all else... Ah! Not for me. With that said, IFF you like Neil Young's voice, this is a really good album overall. The band is great, the lyrics are great... It's just, for ME, I just... I just... can't deal with his voice for more than one song at a time.

A little wandering with long interludes.

A good album, I liked the Everyone Knows This is Nowhere and Down By The River the most.

I was Running Dry until this album popped up. Now I’m Down By the River getting my fill.

Yeah it’s Neil. Cinnamon girl is a powerhouse

More country than I expected

Ich brauchs nicht. Beleidigt aber auch nicht meine Ohren.

Not as good as Harvest Moon but still solid work.

I just recently listened to this album for the first time. Solid album with a couple of great songs.

His voice was not near as jarring as in previous records. The album started off a bit more rock but lulled back into a more country feel. Better than most others from him that we have gone through, but not enough to merit a 4.

Neil Young can be great, but I think he’s very inconsistent. I gave the last album five stars, but this one a three. I think I’ve given him everything but a one-star. There wasn’t anything wrong with this album, per se, but I didn’t get into it.

it's a good album but not my favourite

cool and mellow, not too much to say because i need to save my words for the other dozen neil young albums

A little young for this album, but I can hear how it influenced later artists. Standard 60s/70s for me, nothing outstanding to me

Classic album that’s just not in my headspace right now. Making a mental note to revisit.

This is just simply a really pleasant record. Neil's voice and music creates such a peaceful mood and his storytelling is uncanny. I should listen to more Neil Young.

Easy enough but didn't enjoy it as much as his others

For me Neil Young’s albums always consist of two or three banging tracks but the rest a bit meh. This is no exception. Down By The River and Cinnomem Girl are the standout tracks but the rest don’t really do anything for me. There’s a lot of music Neil Young has produced which is exceptional either on his own or with CSN&Y. I have a greatest hits album of his which I love but made up from multiple decades and albums. So as a singular entity not so good but as part of a collection, marvellous. Would buy this album though if found so that makes it 3/5 material. 3/5 21/9/24

Yeah it was fine! I like the beginning of Down By The River, but ultimately it's not as interesting as CSNY or Harvest or anything.

Yeah, okay, it's nice enough.

not bad, but some tracks are a bit dull. typical white men music.

Two 9+ minute songs, Young was trying to piss me off. Still decent.

I was really hoping for Neil Young with Crazy Town... You're my Butterfly Cinnamon Girl, Sugar Baby... This is a good, mellow album. I really dug that Buffalo Springfield better than this solo stuff, but I like this album. Glad to see he's back on Spotify. 3.12 stars from me.

Ah, the first of what I understand will be a copious amount of Neil Young albums on this list. I've never sat down to listen to stuff by him, so luckily for me this was from earlier in his career, so I can start near the beginning. I only knew Cinnamon Girl, which I sometimes sing as Homer Simpson while making cinnamon toast: "I wanna eat some cinnamon toast, I could be happy, something something, with my cinnamon toast." I enjoyed listening to this, but I feel like I don't have a lot of insights other than it was a pleasant listen. It put me in a cozy and mellow mood. I'm glad he decided to put his stuff back on Spotify so I could access it easily. 3.5

Love the Guitar on these. Super fuzzy, straightforward beats.

It’s cool that it’s jammy and folky at the same time but I got to the end of the album and while I liked the sound of it, it felt pretty impression-less. Kinda average and disappointing for a Neil Young album.

I didn't know.

Neil Young and Sitting Bull.

needed more horsepower

this was good but some songs dragged

I suppose I found it a little interesting to consider its links to grunge and Kurt Cobain, but beyond that I was quite bored by this album. Some of the lyrics and guitar playing seemed oddly amateurish. I don't have much to say about it.

It's alright, Neil Young/dad rock stuff. 3*

It was fine

Cinnamon Girl is one of my favorite Neil Young tracks, but the rest of the album falls shorter for me.

* 6 out of 7 Ain’t Bad * This project has made me warm up considerably to the music of Neil Young. Up to today I’ve rated four of his albums with 5s and two with 4s. I was expecting similar today. I recognized the opening track and thought we might be headed back into 4/5 territory. I did start to warm up to Down By The River, that is until the murder-y lyrics kept recurring - murdering my enjoyment of the song. (I read that Neil Young doesn’t interpret this as a murder song… whetever…) This was followed by more so-so songs with increasingly tiresome and overlong solos. All this made this album feel longer than its 41 minutes… Perhaps with some work I might go from “meh” to “yeah” but I’m exhausted.

I didn't like this as much as I had hoped I would. It strays dangerously close to country in a couple places. That said, Down by the River is pretty awesome, of not a bit overly long. Overall, this is a three star album. Mostly fine, even pretty good in parts.

It's OK.

loved these minimal guitar solos

160/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

it was fine

There are some great songs on this album but I get why folks criticize it for rambling. Editing and some additional takes were needed. Despite the vocals the guitar tracks are entertaining. Overall good. Not great. Coincidentally the last album I listened to was CSN which is a masterpiece and with whom Neil soon became CSNY. This pales in comparison.

I like the title track and enough of “down by the river” to add it to my playlist, but the rest of this was pretty boring.

The Crazy Horse led songs are ok.

I like Neil young and I like jam bands, but I don’t think a Neil young jam band fits my need to listen to list.

Cinnamon Girl. Down By The River

Not my fav neil

Meh Rating: 3.1

Album is very top-heavy with its good tracks, like Cinnamon Girl, Round & Round, and Down By the River... but the in-between has a very strong 'old man dying folk music' aesthetic that was not compelling, despite multiple listens. Perhaps great for its era, but with how much folk and country have advanced, this album feels dated.

En lille smule kedeligt, men helt okay

Bland with sparks of good music, but the good is spread pretty thin

This was a very good listen, although I wish the whole album carried the energy of the first song

One song pulled it down

Wholesome

Neil Young is an incredibly gifted songwriter, but these songs feel a little half-baked and recorded in a cassette deck in a crappy hotel room. I know it was in 1969 and that this is blasphemous but I can't help but think that.

Some interesting tunes in here -- especially Cinnamon Girl (which I have heard many times and know well) and Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere -- which really reminded me of late Beatles stuff. The rest was mostly unnoteworthy in my opinion. I had heard of Down By The River and was expecting something pretty amazing, but found it only mediocre. Overall 3 stars.

Segundo acercamiento a Neil Young y compañía. FAVTRAXS: Round & Round (It Won't Be Long), Down by the River, Cowgirl In the Sand LEASTFAV: The Losing End (When You're On) 3.5/5

3.5 My appreciation for Neil continues to grow!

The music is pretty good, but I can't get past the vocals at times.

Cinnamon Girl ist cool. Der Rest ist auch sehr rockig/folkig.

I don’t get the hype

First time listening to a full Neill young album. I listened to his song ohio before I liked that a lot will listen to other works with crazy horse welcome back to spotify neil young

Good Neil Young album, not my favorite of his though.

I thought I really liked Neil Young but I was not into this. I would say a 3.5 just because it’s Neil Young and some of his stuff is amazing!

Liked Songs Cinnamon Girl Down By The River Cowgirl In The Sand

I quite enjoyed this. I've reviewed one other Neil Young + Crazy Horse album which I also liked, the standalone Neil Young album I listened to was bobbins (UK slang for shite). My take away so far is Crazy Horse is what makes Neil Young palatable to me.

Some great stuff, some okay stuff. Cinnamon Girl is one of the sickest riffs ever and I’ll fight you about it

Lovely album. Not sure why it is a must-listen but it was an enjoyable one

Mediocre album, nothing too groundbreaking. It was ok but not clear why this is on the list. Am I missing something? 2.5/5

It was fine, but didn't get me jazzed to listen to more Neil Young or anything.

Pretty good background study music. Lively energy. I do wish there were more 'traditional' lyrical songs, but the instrumentals are great.

Pretty listenable and chill but not amazing imo

Nice, easy listening with some good ones in there. It didn’t blow my mind.

Down by the River and Cinnamon Girl are good. The rest was quite good too.

You know, it wasn't as bad as I was expecting. Maybe because it's only 40 minutes. 2.5

Very nice relaxing vibe. Probably wouldn’t revisit

There's much worse than this by Young on this list and too many.

Not terrible

Good old school rock, a bit boring

Couple of good songs, otherwise there’s better Neil Young albums out there.

I can't really put Neil Young anywhere. One album is good, the next one is terrible, the next one good again. This one is in the middle.

Not really my thing. Can see why some like it.

Mr. Young, you’ve done it again!

it aight -6/10

Pretty good. It felt self-assured and comfortable in its sound. 6.5/10

6/10 - It was fine. It was just like another rock album. I liked the losing end it felt newish but the rest were just rock songs. Nothing special.

2024-05-25...

Great voice.
