Reviews (page 5 of 13)
I had heard plenty about Neil Young and Crazy Horse, but had never really got into it. However, I am now starting to wonder why it took so long. Cinnamon Girl is a great way to start off the album, and I for some reason didn't put two and two together when it came time to realize that Neil Young wrote it. (I always thought it was someone else). Either way, it was a very enjoyable listen, and definitely caught me off guard.
Really good classic Neil Young. I've had a couple Neil Young + Crazy Horse albums on this list and prefer the older to the newer. Cinnamon Girl & Down by the River are the two standout hits but everything is enjoyable. 7.75/10 (3.875/5)
A album as American as cherry pie.
Rock and roll at its finest. Neil Young never misses
One of the divisive albums I have seen. Lots of 5s, lots of 2s and 1s. I'm a fan of his sound, don his vocals, and appreciate his lyrics. Scoring it a 4.
Classic late 1960's rock. Country tinge ontop of the distorted guitars, followed by folk-inspired acoustic.
Wow yes do I love Neil Young? Didn’t know anything other than Down By the River, but this was easy listening. The Losing End is so good! Definitely adding Cowgirl in the Sand to some sort of guitar sex playlist. Sex guitar playlist? Human sex to guitars playlist
This is my 4th Neil Young record since I started this list and is by far and away the best of the bunch in my opinion. I really enjoy the musicianship and his voice which is often so "muppet" like is more than tolerable here.
Couple iconic tunes.
thought this one was a little more interesting than the last neil young. 4.5
Will definitely come back to this. Really enjoyed it.
4/5 Best Track - "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere"
This is pretty awesome
Cinnamon Girl is a classic, all around good album.
Solid record, good vibes, all despite the folksy country leanings. And you can't say he outstays his welcome. The albums over before it really starts.
Good album. Great guitar, mid vocals, and overall a pleasant listen.
Liked it! But then again, I was already a fan of Neil Young.
Super artiste et quel voix ! Album assez calme, assez mélancolique. Neil Young est connu et reconnu. Je préfère l’album « harvest moon », le plus connu je pense mais un classique !
Cinnamon Girl Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere Down by the River Cowgirl in the Sand
good
Great listen
7/10
What is happening??? This is some melodic folksy hippie adjacent shit and I like it??? I’m not even high right now. Bravo Canada. Bravo.

3.6 Hit and miss. First few songs came and went, barely noticed them. Then Down by the River, absolute stellar track, phenomenal. Then back to dullness with the next. Last two were alright, but never hit the peaks of the central track. Hit & Miss pretty much describes my entire relationship with Neil Young from this list.
Low high 4 Best song: cowgirl in the sand Great raw sound here, very few overdubs which is cool. Neil's songwriting isn't quite at its heights sadly. I dread to think how long the solos were when they played live.
Adorei, mas senti uma quebra depois das músicas que mais gostei (Round & Round (It won’t be long) e Down by the River), especialmente na Running Dry. Certamente vou incluir estas músicas nas minhas playlists
Original response got deleted, not gonna rewrite. Great album but though not my usual taste. Liked the send half
Might have been a 3 but then I LOVED cowgirl in the sand, go off
Jo men bra. Hans röst känns något mindre prominent och jag tycker att det är till albumet fördel.
There are a LOT of Neil Young albums. I have a lot of Neil Young albums. I probably don't need a lot of Neil Young albums. But a few of them absolutely rise to the top. And those particular albums are scattered throughout his career. He's prolific, if not consistent. But that's probably why we like him. This is one of the ones to have, for sure. If for no other reason than to have "Down By The River" (and if you like that, go get Buddy Mile's album with his version on it...even better!)
Wouldn't add any songs to my daily listen but a good album of music
Pretty nice music. Low 4/5.
Some bangers
Great deep track album!
Damn good album. Neil Young always sounds kinda the same to me. I prefer him with CSNY. This album is very country, lots of twang and some jangly.
Awesome album, the only song I didn't love was Running Dry, but even then it wasn't bad. Neil Young doesn't miss. 8/10
cowgirl is special to me, hits every time
Fire album. He can make a guitar talk
Favourite Tracks on first listen were Down By the River, Running dry and Cowgirl In The Sand. The playing is all fantastic, sounds really loose and fun. Young again proves that if you put a great song at the end of your album it raises the entire project, not sure whether I think this is as strong as Harvest, so leaning towards a 4 on first impression, but I'll be revisiting.
Great listen. Long, fun guitar driven songs. -4/5
Awesome.
This album rules.
late on the review but I'm coming back to this album a lot. 4/5
At first I listened to it while getting ready in the morning. It played again while I was driving and I felt more connected to it.
A classic by all accounts
Not exactly my preferred style, but surely some bangers in there, 3.75stars
Good vibes, I enjoyed this one
First time listen to this album in it's entirety - loved it's looseness and atmosphere
I like the story behind this record; basically getting an album recorded when the band was newly formed and had only been playing together for a week, still feeling each other out. Some of this comes through during some of the improvisational parts. Also fun reading how Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand were all written in a waking fever dream. All in all a solid Neil Young record. 3.5/5
Love down by the river!
Random thoughts: * I'm not sure how to properly rate Neil Young. He's obviously a very important artist in the history of music. But on the other hand I'm just not a huge fan despite many listens and attempts. * Cinnamon Girl and Down By The River are the standout track for me on this one and are all-time greats. * The rest of it pretty much followed course but were tracks I'd never really listened to before. * His voice is not the greatest and I know you are not listening to Neil for his beautiful pipes. It's more about the rocking and lyrics. * This feels more like a 3.5 but I'll give it 4 because the impact Neil had on music.
Glad to have discovered this country artist! Every song is gold. Tracks to Track: Down by the River
Previously rated: Harvest (2/5) After the Gold Rush (3/5) Tonight's the Night (3/5) Ragged Glory (3/5) On The Beach (3/5) ****************************** I’d say this one is a bit above average. I guess his voice was still in its tolerable stage. Starts off with a couple of short but enjoyable songs before it gets into murdering his girl. Not everything is great, it gets boring at times, but I’ll add this to the “listen again” list.
I really enjoy Neil Young, but I’m not too familiar with this album. I’ve only really heard Cinnamon Girl and Down by the River, both of which I really enjoy. The Losing End was a great song as well I hadn’t heard. I also enjoyed parts of Running Dry, but it seemed to be missing something.
Not really listened to Neil Young before, really enjoyed! Nicely soothed a mundane car journey.
Nice to get to listen to this album. Will likely listen to it again!
Favorites: Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River, Cowgirl in the Sand Still fantastic, even if it is a bit more stripped compared to his later work. It's impressive that Neil accomplished so much musically at the point of this album's release, and especially at only 24. Some of these songs are absolute staples in my rotation, and I continue to admire and adore Neil with every passing day.
For whatever reason, I like Neil Young and Crazy Horse more than I like him as a solo artist or with CSN&Y. Very good album.
Probably really a 3.5, but I’m rounding up because “Down by the River” and “Cowgirls in the Sand” are epic.
Pretty solid, like… great tracks. I was just too sad to dig lol
Crazy Horse I just fell out of the Neil, get that Young in my bank account
1969? doesn't sound it. Down By The River is a belter, Cinnamon Girl (Do prefer the cover) great album overall.
This is the first time I’ve listened to a Neil Young album all the way through, I’ve heard songs but never a full record. I loved this. Opener “Cinammon Girl” is a fun higher energy song that leads directly into the title track, a more country rock sounding track that I personally enjoyed quite a lot. “Round & Round (It Won’t Be Long)” is an excellent song and one of my favorites. I really enjoyed “Down By The River” the solos spread out across the song are excellent. “The Losing End (When You’re On)” was great as well. “Running Dry” was my favorite on the record. The closer “Cowgirl In The Sand” despite its length was also really good. This album is a really good collection of country rock, and folk rock and I loved it.
This is album number 4 I've heard from Neil Young. It's really nice to listen to. The long songs don't drag out. It's one of Young and Crazy Horse's best. Let's move on to the next album. 4 stars for "Everyone Knows This is Nowhere".
Good album, though not my favorite. The songs are all pretty solid and his talent was on full display, just not really my mood most of the time
Strong musicians reminiscent of early 20th century country music
Yeah that’s some good shit. Not my favorite album of his but definitely solid. 8/10
A solid start for his solo career
It was another version of my life. If I had paid attention to this inkown girl how different my life would have been. No drugs, no running from home different kids. It was really sad. At 47 my brain should not be imaging what if scenarios of 15. It's sad enough to think of in a woken state. Then life was different as an adult. Still divorced, Louis C.K lived down the street, he was also some steampunk superhero who saved me but it wasn't me it was Simon Pegg, by putting a steam powered boot on one foot. The faces were to vague, the scenes were too choppy, normally I don't try record those. I pulled a worm out of my stomach after watching a nun do it to a sick child. I was also viewing my neighborhood from a different angle.
Neil Young, c'est très souvent bien, de temps en temps très bien, mais rarement transcendant.
Haven't heard this album before and I'm wondering why because wow I really enjoyed listening to it. The generator is making me realize I like Neil Young more than I thought 4/5
Do you guys think that on "Certe Notti", the Neil Young song he refers to is "Cowgirl in the Sand"? Becausa I'm certain of it and I WILL speak of it in therapy. Anyways, gotta love Neil Young, he's an OG. Makes me think of my dad. Hurts like hell to listen to his music, but what a man, what a musician. 4.5 stars.
It's a sound that's not for everyone. But it is for me!
My first repeat of an artist on here. Still love Neil Young. His voice is still aetherial and the songs on this one are well crafted. It's a mellow album, AM Rock at best, folk rock otherwise. Still a lot of country influence, but leans heavier on the Rock. 1969 was a hell of a year for music, I guess. Good one.
This and some Test cricket went down like a treat. Standouts are Down by the River, Running Dry, and Cowgirl in the Sand
Good old fashioned rock. Very evocative of the late 60s, early 70s. Like a gentle breeze of melody blowing through the day. It was the perfect accompaniment for the dog walk of a cool sunny morning
I'm a sucker for Neil Young.
Enjoyed it.
Like a Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young album but with extra jamming. Perfect for Sunday morning listening.
A damn fine album. Each track is catchy and well written, and Neil is a heck of a vocalist. Each song feels right, and the two long tracks don't wear out their welcome even at 10 minutes each. It's just some really good folk rock.
Good into to NY. Didn't know loads about him but enjoyed this.
Classic from the 60s, what’s not to like. Favorite track: Down by the River other picks: cinnamon girl, everybody knows, cowgirl in the sand
This album is pretty great, particularly love the noodlie jams on the longer tracks. Gotta be in the right mood to listen to Neil young sing but. 7/10
4.28
The previous two NY albums were so boring, that I was surprised to enjoy this one. First few songs hooked me into the right listening space.
Neil and the gang get lightly too self-indulgent 7.75/10
love neil <3
I actually really liked this album. Nothing extraordinary but good instrumentals with good lyrics. Listening to it in the sun helps probably. 7/10 fav songs : Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere & Round and Round
Not sure why, but Neil's stuff sounds better to me now than it used to.
Classic. Great music and songwriting.
Tiene muy buenos momentos de solos y guitarras, muy creedence.
Some classics on this one
Big fan of Neil Young's work. So let's go by this track by track: "Cinnamon Girl" - ah yes, the one note solo. Although this is one of his most well-known pieces, I feel like he's come to regret it somewhat. It's not one he plays often anymore, I think. But it's got most of what Neil Young is known for: deeper lyrics, minimalist guitar solo. "Everybody Knows this Is Nowhere" - it starts off with a country feel, but you realize there's more to it than that. "Round & Round (It Won't Be Long)" - I never liked when Young shot for those higher notes in these more delicate songs. It works a bit more in the last song. It'd be interesting to hear someone to cover this and see what they do with it. "Down By The River" - I first heard this piece as an acoustic version, on the CSNY album "4-Way Street," it seems more of a mournful song that way, but the longer electric version works here as well. Gives him more room to explore throughout the song. "The Losing End (When You're On)" - more of a country song. Neil is known for pieces like this, and there are a few country albums he's done. Still, I think it works pretty well, sandwiched between the two epic songs. "Running Dry (Requiem For The Rockets)" - I feel like this is something he could have explored with other songs as well, that dirge-like remembrance. It fits well after the previous song, but not something I would come back to again and again. "Cowgirl In The Sand" - although not as mournful as "Down By The River," it is a dark song, which NY does well. Great tune. Four of the songs here are ranked pretty high up on lists of best Neil Young songs. On that alone, it gets some pretty high praise. But "Running Dry" and "Round & Round" kinda drag it down for me; not an album I revisit regularly. I probably should though. Top tracks: "Cinnamon Girl," title track, "Down By The River," "Cowgirl In The Sand"
Another solid album by Neil Young. So why this album on this list? I think it must be because it's his first with Crazy Horse and it's mostly just a spontaneous jam session. These sessions are like playing pick-up sports and gelling with new teammates, improvising all the while but still keeping on the same page. Neil goes off on some solo and Danny Whitten just figures out how to harmonize and change up the accompaniment, and Billy Talbot and Ralph Molina follow his lead. That's not easy to do and not sound like crap. And they sound pretty damn good and harmonious on the longer and windier Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand. Cinnamon Girl and the title track are also stellar. The other tracks were decent but not as stellar.
Neil Young's first album with Crazy Horse - it sounds a lot like other Neil Young albums, but fortunately I like Neil Young. He's another one who is way too over-represented in the 1001, but I definitely enjoyed this album, particularly the first side. Cinnamon Girl is a classic and opens with an iconic riff, the title track is a good song, Round & Round is a nice chill track, and I enjoyed Down by the River, although it could have been shorter. The second side didn't hit me as much, but Cowgirl in the Sand was good (although another one that was too long). Great guitar playing to close out the album. Overall, the album sounds like being at a great live show - raw, but it pulls you in.
Another one I liked more than expected. Folky but not as much as I thought. More rock and ro

нормалек.
Incredible stuff
Nice album. 7/10
The voice is always on the verge of an emotional breakdown. But old Shakey has the support system of a raw rock 'n' roll band to see him through. Delicate, dangerous. Bloody LOVE this.
Nothing really to say. Classic Neil Young. I prefer my country rock with a little mix of some rock themes rather than being too stringy like folk rock. But not my fave.
I am here for more Neil Young. This album is as good if not better than the last one we listened to that I really enjoyed. Loved Cinnamon Girl as the opener. Down By The River is a really enjoyable listen for 9 minutes. Love the chorus/lyrics and really love all the guitar riffing. Cowgirl In The Sand is right on par with this song too. The rest of the songs are just alright. Like the last album, I don't think there's enough to get this towards a 5, but would still grade is as a solid 4.
This is a wonderfully crusty album. Gotta love Young's staple distorted tone. Cinnamon Girl is the only song I recognize from a glimpse at the tracklist. Its a fine song at that -- nothing terribly flashy, but solid writing and execution that is catchy. Other standouts were Down by the Rive and Cowgirl in the Sand. This is one of them albums that is nice to listen to straight through, but doesn't leave a long lasting impression. I'm okay with that, and expect I'll be back for more visits. Solid 4 territory for me.
This one gets a similar review to The Carpenters. Not really my jam and have never been a listener of Neil Young. This album won't really change things, but it was a good listen. A low 4 that I won't come back to.
Probably my favorite Neil Young album that has come up so far, may be the addition of Crazy Horse. I listened to this after getting back from a camping trip and I wish I would have listened to it there because this was some good camping music
Have always loved Cinnamon Girl and Down By the River is my favorite Neil Young song of all time. Cowgirl in the Sand also rips. The rest do enough to get this up to a mighty high 4. Probably my favorite we've had from Neil Young so far.
Well, what a surprise! It didn't appeal to me at first, I thought I was going to straight up hate it, but I really started enjoying it throughout the tracks. The guitar solos are absolutely interesting and unique, they sound horrible on first listening, but you really get to understand them better as you listen. I still think the lyrics are kind of silly, though. So it's four stars for you, Neil. 7/10
Great album, "Running Dry" is the one weak track that keeps it from perfection
Cool folk/rock album. I think this style is more in line with what I usually listen to.
Rocky western, dubbelstemmige Hamburg muziek
Kjem absolutt til å høyre meir på denne
#97 - This was cool!
Lyckas både vara avslappnade men ändå med fart, om det rimlar. Mycket bra!
This is probably Neil Young’s best album. The trio of Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River, and Cowgirl in the Sand is truly impossible to beat. 4.5 stars.
I skipped over the crazy horse albums when I first got into Neil Young. Not sure why - this is great.
The Sainted Neil, with one of his most loved records. It's very, very good. It's not quite in the upper echelons of his back catalogue for me, if only because of the imperial phase of Harvest and After The Goldrush, but it's raw, it's emotional, the songs are wound up so tight yet still sound really loose. I started, 623 days ago, with only a passing Young knowledge outside of the aforementioned period, but there's so much to enjoy across the whole career I'm discovering.
This was a surprisingly great listen. So great that I listened to it three times in a row. While I'm not the biggest fan of Young's vocals, there is a vulnerability to them that works really well here. A tough album to grade because I think he's best within the CSNY combination and also this isn't his best solo work - but there is undeniably something special here.
76/100.
I had this at a strong 3 until Cowgirl in the Sand reminded me that this album is, in fact, a 4.
Neil Young's frequently whiny vocals were less whiny on this recording. That's a good thing. 'Down by the River' is a great track. So is 'Running Dry'. Both have extended instrumental sections packages. The 'unkind man' in me is whispering, 'yeah, you like them 'cos Young isn't singing so much'. This was going to be a 3, but 'Down by the River' onwards turned it into a 4. moving it from the 'OK' to 'I like' category. 4/5.
Lalalalalalalaaaaaaaaaaaaa
I only first listened to this album last year before I started the generator, and I thought it was ok but wasn't in my thoughts to revisit. But when I put it on this time something just clicked. I played it loud and it sounded so good, full of great songs especially Down on the River and Cowgirl in the Sand. It has grown from maybe a 3 to now a 4, so maybe a grower that will get better the more I hear it. 8/10
A solid album from Mr. Young and Crazy Horse. 8.8/10 Best Tracks: "Cinnamon Girl" "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere"
Rating: 8/10 Great album from start to finish. Really enjoyed the jam band direction Neil Young took on this album. A lot of great riffs and solos and just fun to listen to.
I enjoyed it a lot
7/10 Quite enjoyed the album but wasn’t a fan of the production/guitar tones
I truly enjoyed this album. It’s sweet and relaxing. It starts with the best song on the album and probably the song you will recognize the most. But it doesn’t overstay its welcome, and it’s definitely not too long. The only real problem is several days later after listening to it, the only song I vividly remember is that first song. But that doesn’t mean the other songs are bad or boring, they just don’t have that catchy factor. I think the strongest aspect of this album is that over time I can inly see this album becoming more endearing over time and really growing on me.
7 good-length songs, I like! I also love the Neil Young x Crazy Horse Link-Up Albums! Always so so good! Reminds me of the music dad played when I was younger, probably because this album is one of them...
Solid jams. This album just flew by. Good energy. A very worthwhile listen.
Not bad some good short tracks and nice gituar twang. Really liked cinnamon girl. Not as dated as I thought it would sound. I could imagine some bands now releasing almost similar songs
A good album, gives indication of what is to come in coming years.
7/10 Yay Cinnomon Girl...and other music too. 4-12-2025
Early Shakey on country mode. Some excellent guitar work on here. Cinnamon Girl and Down By The River. You can’t go wrong.
Very nice! I've enjoyed a lot Cinnamon Girl, Down By The River & Cowgirl In The Sand
I found it to be a really pleasant folk-rock album. It's super relaxing and perfect for unwinding. Nothing on the album really jumps out as particularly remarkable. It's just a solid, enjoyable listen that doesn't necessarily blow you away, but it's great for a chill evening.
"Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" is a good album. Nothing spectacular or surprising, but enough to pass the time. Neil Young's voice doesn't bother me that much on this album, to my surprise. Like I told, a good album.
i love neil young i love neil young i love neil young i love neil young
4 ofc
Awesome fucking stuff
Round & Round and Cowgirl in the Sand were my stand outs. A nice mellow play but quality.
Another super strong record from shakey
Pretty good, again doesnt speak to me perfectly but solid. Like down by the river and cowgirl. Got suggested old man by neil young, more of a vibe.
Decent
A great big yes to this album. Beautiful songs.
Great road trip album
8/10. "Cinnamon Girl" is awesome. :)
Was fully prepared to give this 5 stars, cause it's one of my favorite albums by one of my favorite artists. When I first listened to this, some twenty-odd years ago, pretty much everything about this (but especially the extended guitar jam on Down By the River) completely blew me away. Upon this latest re-listen, I have to admit, there are some songs on here (looking at you, "Round & Round") that do overstay their welcome a bit. So I'm not quite willing to give that perfect score. Still a great, great album overall.
only two albums deep into my experience with Neil Young (the other being Rust Never Sleeps), the thing I've come to appreciate the most about his work is that it doesn't waste your time. it's raw, no-frills rock 'n' roll played HARD. the one-note guitar solo has rarely been pulled off with this much aplomb. Young's voice has been a bit of an acquired taste, but I've come to really appreciate the way his vocals seem to haunt his songs. there's a despondence in his singing that gives his lyrical narratives a more three-dimensional character and emotion. but man, this band. especially Danny Whitten. decent 8/10.
My wife says Neil's voice is the Greatest Of All Time! Or maybe she's just saying he sounds like a goat. Either way, a fantastic songwriter and performer.
Two stars for the last two songs alone
More classic Young
Great artist, great voice, great music/ album. And, still going strong today. Kudos!
It is so great to hear Neil Young, adding Crazy Horse is the icing on the cake. He has a huge catalog and this one doesn’t disappoint.
Some great songs. I enjoy the raw nature of the recordings much more than most of his stuff.
my first album in the 1001 albums project is a neil young album. I love neil young in general but this is definetly not my favourite from him the first two tracks are really good and so are the two 10 minute songs but everyrhing inbetween is pretty unnoteworthy. But overall good album 7/10 Favourite: Down by the River Least Favourite: Round & Round (It Won't Be Long)
This was a pretty great rediscovery. I’d put Crazy Horse in a different pocket of his music, forgetting about this seminal contributor to “Decade”, the album on which I first heard Neil young’s music and the one that stays with me to this day, often to exclusion of his other works. Solid ‘hits’ here, but the other songs are strong and beautifully round out the album.
I though this was pretty good actually. Closer to 3.5 maybe. I haven't heard much of this side of Neil Young who I can usually take or leave. Pairs well with the Eagles album (I'm catching up).
Cinnamon Girl 4 Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere 3.6 Round & Round (It Won't Be Long) 3 Down by the River 4.2 The Losing End (When You're On) 3.6 Running Dry (Requiem for the Rockets) 3.5 Cowgirl in the Sand 4.3 Score: 3.742857143
Enjoyed it more than expected. Sometimes it's easy to understand why someone is considered a genius even if they're not completely your cup of tea. This was one of those times for me. I could really hear the genius in this album.
pretty nice, don't particularly love the voice but the instrumentals are nice and calm!
I think this is about as bad of an album as you can make while having 4/7 songs be absolute classics. What Neil brings in songwriting talent and originality, he takes away with pure guitar malpractice. After about the 4th minute of aimless, anti-melodic, distracted noodling in Down by The River I found myself almost laughing at how badly he'd managed to butcher an otherwise great song. He plays guitar with all the intentionality an focus of a 13 year old practicing scales while watching TV. Similarly, with Cowgirl in the Sand there is a truly great 2 and half minute song buried beneath nearly 7 minutes of the worst guitar playing I've ever heard in my life. Reminds me of that clip of Yoko Ono shrieking over a collaboration with the Beatles and Chuck Barry. With all this said, Cinnamon Girl and Everybody Knows this is Nowhere is a hell of a way to start an album. Cover versions of down by the river and cowgirl in the sand show how they have good bones but fucked up faces. This is probably more of a 3.5, but rounding up because Everybody Knows this is Nowhere is my mother's favorite song and one of the best songs ever written about being bummed out
Man, I love Neil Young. Late 60s Neil is freaking everywhere This album rocks. The front side is fantastic. Cinnamon girl is an all time road tripper for me. The second side isnt as entertaining, but I think Cowgirl In The Sand is a great long jam to finish off with - although I think Neil isnt super creative on lead. I did a fair amount of reading on Danny Whitten. Quite a bummer knowing how talented he was as a collaborator with Neil. The rhythm guitar was is truly a staple on this album. 4 stars here.
Rly good album. Good chill vibe of folk, rock and country vibes. It felt like some 80s sitcom intro at times with a paper boy listening to a Walkman which what made it this decent. A few stand outs like count & count but other than that everything sorta blended together well. 8.7 overall 4.3/5
Great to hear
Neil Young’s album with Crazy Horse is very mellow with elements of rock and blues that you can groove to but also imagine yourself driving to the beach. The low bass lines feel comforting in a way.
Some of his greatest tracks, Cinnamon Girl and Down by the River on this one
Favourite Track: Down By The River Honourable Mentions: Cowgirl in the Sand, Everybody Knows This is Nowhere DOWN BY THE RIVUHHHHHHHH, I SHOT MA BAYBEEEEEEEEEEEE "Everybody Knows This is Nowhere" is one of those albums that grows even richer with repeated listens. On first listen it was a bit understated and repetitive (dare I say boring), but after sitting down and intentionally listening to it I started to notice the details that really make this album a classic; like the twangy guitar tone and the natural, raw approach. This is the perfect camping/road trip album. That guitar solo in "Down by the River" is truly iconic.
I do like the raw guitar solos in here and the openness of the songs although at times it meanders a bit.
Well, I have surprised myself by really liking this. I like the vibe much better than other offerings that have come up from him. His voice isn’t the best but it somehow works on this record. A solid and unexpected 4
Sounds very nice. Reminds me a bit of the Grateful Dead with their Americana sound and extended instrumental jams. Doesn’t go above and beyond in any particular aspect, but it doesn’t really need to. Solid four stars. Favorite Track: Down by the River
OK, but I hafta ask: what exactly is so special about Neil Young, anyway? I mean, seven albums. He has **seven albums** on this list. The only singular artist that has more albums than him is David Bowie and, well — that's David Bowie. The famous line about him is that he was a chameleon, reinventing himself over and over again throughout the years, and nearly on every album. I get that to get the full scope of Bowie you can't just throw up ZIGGY STARDUST and call it a day. With Young, though... I mean, all I feel like I've ever heard from him is singer-songwriter folk. Why do we need more than **one** album to understand that? Well, OK, I'm not a complete idiot. Just because my "melody first" ass doesn't recognize lyrics doesn't mean they're not there. That has to be one part of it, no doubt. After that... I'unno. I guess the high guard who makes these "greatest of all time" calls finds the songs on Young's albums just **that** consistently strong. Me being no tastemaker myself, it's not like I can exactly argue with that. But whatever. These are thoughts that could've been applied to any of Young's albums. What about this one? Is there anything here that could maybe help me out a bit more? Funny enough, I don't feel like I'd credit too much of what I'd like about this album to Young himself? At least not entirely? Which might sound a little dumb; he's the sole writer on this album, after all. I just have to wonder to myself, though: how much of this is Crazy Horse's influence? Like, I think back to the other Neil Young albums, and I can't really think of any of them as "rocking." Sure, they each have a few country and folk rock songs, and "Southern Man" jams harder than Lynyrd Skynyrd, though on the whole I struggle to consider them as more than just "singer-songwriter folk." The only exception to this is the second half of the other album Young did with Crazy Horse, RUST NEVER SLEEPS. Now, yeah, I know Young can rock on his own — besides "Southern Man", "Rockin' In The Free World" **does** exist, after all... And, yeah, this album doesn't go as hard as either of those songs or the second side of RUST NEVER SLEEPS, but damn it, it's still what I liked the most about this album. This thing is more late 60's, hippie-ish country/folk rock than it isn't, and I dig it quite a bit. Like, sure, it's nothing I'd go completely nutso over, but for a simple, rockin' time, I don't feel like I can complain. The ten-some minute songs didn't even bother me too much; the melodies are just strong enough that I didn't really notice their length. For that matter, the fiddle on the penultimate track wasn't an issue for me, either. It could be that I've heard that particular tone in one too many Vitamin String Quartet covers, but is it "Geneva violation" bad? Hardly, please. The only track I wasn't feeling too much, frankly, was the purest folk-type song here, "Round & Round". As a little bit of variety, yeah. On that merit, I wouldn't toss it off the record... However, although I never would, it'd for sure maybe be the one I'd most consider skipping. To bring it back to my earlier question about Crazy Horse's influence, though... I'unno. I've given HARVEST and AFTER THE GOLD RUSH 5's, and I don't feel like this would go much higher than a 4, but it still feels like something I'd return to first. Put aside the one track I didn't really feel — for my own tastes, I'd still take an album that's largely folk rock over folk songwriting. Y'know? So that might not have gotten me any closer to really understanding why there are so many Neil Young albums here. If anything, I cemented more why I, myself, wouldn't have put so many on here. But, y'know, how much is that opinion really worth, huh? Everybody knows it's not much. But, eh, whatever the remaining albums are, I doubt any of them would be much worse than a 4. That can't be nothing.
I've never really been into Neil Young that much, to be honest. Maybe if I were more into the folksier side of rock, I'd appreciate it on a better level, but this isn't exactly my cup of tea. Not that it doesn't sound good, though, of course it does. 3.5 bumped up to 4.
I'm digging the rock and roll Willie. This album was a win for me, all of the long songs never felt too like they went on too long and there were some great instrument solos. And a funky song near the end that surprised me, Running Dry was the song.
Another one of the albums on this list that has me reevaluating how I’ve gone this far with so little Neil Young in my musical oeuvre. For a 24-year-old Canadian former member of Buffalo Springfield, this is legendary stuff. Seven tracks, all killer, and he saves the best for last with “Cowgirl In the Sand,” an eight-minute guitar-fueled epic that he wrote in one day alongside “Cinnamon Girl” and “Down By the River,” all while stricken with a fever. Cool stuff. Undiluted rock’n’roll for the ages.
Excellent choice that shows a full range of emotions and straight rock and roll
This is Neil Young’s best record. Some of his finest playing and songwriting comes off this seven-song debut
This is my third Young album (fourth if you count C, S, N, & Y). I get it, the guy makes a good album, this one is no exception, but C'mon ... that's a lot. I wonder if Neil Young is on the selection committee
I thought this would be more low-key but it was actually pretty charming to hear! Especially with the harmonies and all.
Лучшая песня - Cowgirl in the Sand.
Impressive solo sophomore offering! Cinnamon Girl et al
The only Neil Young album I really like
This is nice. I love the snirping guitars and that soothing voice
The first of the various iterations of Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young I've gotten on the list that I didn't find to be whatever or bland. These songs are catchy, the album flows easily and enjoyable. Maybe Neil was the talent. I'm sure I have 20 more albums of various pairings and solos of these four to test the theory.
Preset good, I liked it. Thought it was pretty relaxing.
The only time I saw Neil Young live in concert - back in 2007 - Cowgirl in the Sand, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, and Cinnamon Girl were on the set list. The first of Young's many acclaimed classic solo albums, all these tracks were staples of FM radio well into the late 80s (and beyond), culminating in the 10-minute version of Cowgirl In The Sand. These songs have endured the test of time, still sound fresh and vibrant, still rock. Young manages to pack into 40 minutes what many musicians fail to produce in their entire career. And there is still much more (and greater) to come on later albums. Not his best album, but still a great listen.
Not Neil's best but still better than 90% off the list
One I actually knew pretty well, a big Neil Young fan though not a completist. Love the sound of this album, love Crazy Horse and the feel of a band in a room together. It's got really raw riffs and it takes its time, marking itself as the template for everything Neil Young and Crazy Horse did afterwards. Danny Whitten did a lot more than I remembered, plenty of important vocals etc. Great band. This comes just after Buffalo broke up and before CSNY really took off but obviously he came back to Crazy Horse as necessary. Just a brilliant indicator for starting this listening project to get to re listen to an album I know.
Not as tuned in as his later works, more jam bandish and country/folk. 7/10
Great album. Solid 8.5 out of 10. Clear highlights with Cinnamon Girl and Down by the River but also Everybody Knows this is Nowhere and Running Dry are excellent.
8/10
This one has a haunting quality that I like. Definitely doesn’t sound “samey” either. Not a huge fan of all of it (“The Losing End” doesn’t do anything for me) but, for the most part, this is a good winter album.
Neil Young is great, and I remember this being a good listen. Worth another.
There is a level of over-abuse of certain artists in this list. One of them is Neil Young (along with Bob Dylan, Talking Heads, David Bowie, etc.). That said, this particular record has been the most appealing of the ones I've listened to by Neil. I really liked the primitive sound of it, and there are amazing tunes like Cinnamon Girl. If I go back to a Neil Young album, it will be this one, for sure.
This had one a half listens. Didn't get all the way through last time. I wanted to go back to it though as enjoyed the first half a lot. Beautiful voice and some very nicely crafted songs.
They’re not all killers but some fantastic tracks here.
okay this is actually pretty good.
This is super chill. I love neill young always
This was moving. I somehow haven't given Neil a fair shake up to now, and I'm glad to hear this album in full. Will seek out more.
The first song turned me off a bit but every song after was great and felt like it was coming from a new creative space each time
3 or 4. whatever
Il y a une rudesse, une rugosité sous l’apparente tranquillité des guitares
I really like the guitar tone in Cinnamon Girl. Down By The River is great. Yet another album that demonstrates I have really warmed to Neil Young.
Delightful! Ran through the whole album without noticing. Good spin!
Best I've heard from Neil
Good. The songs maybe get a little long and repetitive at points? But the solos rock and I think even the repetitive parts have this droning, hypnotic quality that work in its favor.
Favorite Track: Everybody Knows This is Nowhere
Fluid melodies.
Great album. Not as good as RUST though!
Day371 - my level of appreciation for neil young is what it is , i can’t be swayed anymore
amugy elveztem nagyon ezt hallgatni fav: running dry (requiem for the rockets)
Kedvenc/Favourite: Round & Round (It Won't Be Long) Olyan otthonos érzés volt hallgatni, sokszor kellemesen keserédes. Tetszett, hogy kicsit countrys és ahogy a dalok történeteket meséltek el. It felt so cozy to listen to, often delightfully bittersweet. I liked that it was a bit country and the way the songs told stories.
Really beautiful and relaxing album. Deep lyrics and calming melodies.
Excellent album great instrumentals
Overall Score: 8.3/10 Favorite Track: Round & Round (It Won't Be Long) Least Favorite Track: The Losing End (When You're On) Very good album. Rough, but beautiful. Would have to be in the right mood to relisten. Felt like some songs dragged a little, but not too much. Hell yes, very awesome.
Not the biggest Neil Young Fan, still impressive album
chill, uneventful za pomno slusanje, malo baca zvukom na stari wishbone ash
4 out of 7 songs really good solos
Neil and the Horse. A classic album. Like a worn comfortable flannel shirt.
Easy to listen to and intriguing. Early Neil Young - what's not to love.
gorjusssss I want to be a cowboy
Love Neil young, however this was a 4/5 for me. Didn’t make me go crazy go stupid like some of the CNSY stuff.
Great, has 2 of my favorite Neil Songs- Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand
4.5
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere // Round & Round // Down by the River // The Losing End // Running Dry //
Down By The River <3
Overall: 8/10 Really good, rocking album from my fellow countryman. I was shocked that there were only 7 tracks but that's what happens when an album from the 60s has two nearly 10 minute songs lol my biggest complaint would be that he should have edited a couple tracks down, but even those songs are really good so it's hard to complain about it. I've always loved Neil's voice because it's so unconventional and interesting to me. I can't wait to get more Neil (5 more albums in the list with his involvement as far as I know) Fav Song: Cinnamon Girl Least Fav Song: Down by the River
I have no idea where this album lies when it comes to the CSNY timeline but I will say that Neil doesn’t stray far away from that bands formula with this album. Round and Round sort of killed the vibe but the album recovers with the next song. It’s jammy, it’s harmonized, it’s whiney in that Neil Young way.
9.7 ★★★★½
A really good album, but I think it is built a bit too much around the two long jams of "Down by the River" and "Cowgirl in the Sand", although both good, they get a bit too drawn out. "Running Dry" is my favourite song on the album. 4 stars
Classic Neil Young album. Highlights include the title track, "Cinnamon Girl", and the epic "Cowgirl in the Sand". 4.5 stars.
Groovy. Not all songs slapped, but I i enjoyed it overall.
3.5★. Had a lukewarm reaction initially but fell in love with the last two songs (particularly the last - Cowgirl in the Sand) and gave it another listen and ended up liking it a lot more.
Liked it more than I thought I would.
First one of these I actually own a physical copy of. I’m not a big Neil Young guy, but when my pack rat uncle suddenly passed during Covid the family had to deal with his estate and clearing out his house FULL of stuff. I got the task of selling off his old record collection. A buddy of mine came down from Muncie to help sort and price them. As we sat in my garage pawing through bin after bin of old dusty albums and playing them on my little portable player, deciding which I was selling and which I was gonna keep as inheritance, we eventually got to the Neil Young’s. My buddy insisted I keep this one and Oyster Bay and give them a try. Still not a big Neil Young fan, but I do enjoy the memory of listening to records in my garage on a sunny Covid afternoon, drinking beers, talking music, and enjoying some company that wasn’t a foster pug or the guy selling contactless to go orders from Fire By The Monon for a change, and that memory alone is worth 4 stars.
I had to listen to it a couple of times, but I really liked this in the end. I’m not sure if it’s an acquired taste or I just wasn’t in the right headspace first time around, but I’m adding a few of these to my regular rotation
I love Down By the River, but 10 mins it’s a long time Neil. Overall very good! But a couple of 10 minute songs perhaps took away the fiver. Simpsons: Yes
Decent album.
First half of the album is great, typical soulful Neil Young goodness. Less keen on the second half where it becomes less so about that and more so drawn out guitar solos which really did drag for me. Would've been an easy 5 if it continued on that path
I liked this album. It has less of the whiny voice that appears in other Young albums. And there are several great tracks, in particular: Cinnamon Girl, Round & Round, Cowgirl in the Sand.
Took me a little while to come around to Neil’s jammier side, but I like it a lot now
THERE WE GO NOW No more Crazy Horse collabs please, Rolling Stone, this is as good as it gets. Ladies, a reminder that all kinds of men, even sweet Neil Young, do get in a killin' mind (Down by the River). Constant vigilance! ✅✅✅✅✅ Cowgirl in the Sand
7/10 I bet these songs killed in a live show. The solos are great, songwriting is pretty good, but man does Neil’s voice get weird sometimes.
Good stuff
Absolutely great Neil Young album. Love it.
I understand why it's here but this is just not my favorite. 7/10
Thought it was good. I like Neil Young a lot, but more so of his solo career than his crazy horse career. Overall it was a solid pick.
Fav song: Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere Great performance, great recording, great album. I love how when I listen to Neil Young I can hear his influence in so many of my favourite artists today. Great listen, will definitely be revisiting this one.
The guy can't sing, but that hasn't stopped me from liking the stuff of his that I like. That he, personally, is such a whiny little b**** doesn't take away from how I feel about his music. Was this a home run? No. Was it a strong effort with some great tracks? Yes.
I cheated listening to this. Put Down by the River on repeat a few times before moving on. As a Canadian I'm pretty sure I'm required to give this at least a 3. But I'm a very good Canadian.
Cinnamon Girl, Down by the river and Cowgirl in the sand are great jams. There is some “go get a beer” length to some of these but I like the live jam feel nonetheless. There rest is ok, but those three carry it to a 4.
With obvious highlights like Cinnamon Girl and Down By The River this feels like it should be top rated, but I can’t quite get there. Probably because of the few way too long jam tracks. Still, this deserves major credit knowing that the guys only knew each other for a few days before recording. And even more so because it was cut to tape live from the floor which really captures the feel of the songs.
I heart NY and love this album. I’ve always admired how Neil can change the mood of a song with his guitar, yet without relying on pedals, the volume knob, or even complex licks. Just sheer aggression, like he’s choking his axe. Anyways, super solid and my heart almost wants to go higher with this, but without a transcendent song to take it there, just a real solid 4 for me.
Neil Young can be hit or miss for me but this is just some good ol rock and or roll. I feel like he might have a career ahead of him after this. Side note, I saw Neil young and Pearl Jam covering one of his songs. Can’t remember which one. But it was great. You should check it out.
Cinnamon Girl and Down By The River push this close to a 4 on their own. The rest of the album is solid, so I’m rounding up. Could have chilled on the 9+ minute songs tho… 3.75/5
Some really good slow winding folk rock, with some of the best jam sessions I've heard in a while. Was confused though, definitely was expecting Native American vibes, I was like how did he get a 100+ year old Indian chief on the record?
Some of the best from Neil Young. An album full of hits. Captures that unique sound tightly into one album. Only reason I haven't given it a five is personal preference about his music.
I need to grow up and just admit I like Neil Young. It's time for me to start going to bed at a reasonable time and learn a bit about gardening.
4/5
Young sheds his folksy rock roots and gets a little down and dirty with Crazy Horse. This album contains some legit jams like "Cinnamon Girl" and "Down by the River." While the album is often categorized as proto-grunge, its influence transcends any single genre. The raw energy and emotional intensity foreshadow the alternative rock movements of the decades to come, while the introspective lyrics and acoustic moments retain a timeless folk sensibility.
This is fantastic. A small number of songs, some of them quite long, but all very cohesive and not too long an album overall. Neil Young's voice is something of an acquired taste but I feel like it's one I'm starting to acquire. I love the guitar solos on this album. Would be a 5 but some songs are weaker and it didn't hit me fully until my second listen
Good job Neil. 4.5
Not worth listening to the whole album
There are two sides of this album, as it is often the case with Young: side A, the electric tracks, side B, the folk/country ones. The electric titles are really good, with the good amount of distortion, nice instrumentals, and two of them are lenghty, but in a good way, letting enough time for the song to unfold. This side is a solid 4 or even a 5. And there's the calmer, folk/country songs, that are much less interesting and much more boring. The two sides are reasonably well intertwined, but if I love the electric Young & Crazy Horse, I'm much less sensitive to their unplugged side.
What a run he was on
Not much to say other than this was a really fun listen. Heartfelt, upbeat, and groovy. Leave it to a Canadian to get me to like country a little more. Top tracks: Round & Round, Down By the River, The Losing End
What a lovely album. I was already a big fan of Neil Young's Harvest moon and this album gave me more of that American, smooth folky rock. Running Dry was my favorite but the whole album really was a pleasure listening to.
Neil's albums always seem to land in the 3-4 star range for me. Good-great, but not all-time. Cinnamon Girl is a favorite of mine.
Perfectly fine.
I like quite a lot of the elements of the rock n roll hybrid style with quite a lot of interesting effects. instrumentals are good, especially the early breakbeat on the last song. Favorite songs: cinnamon girl, running dry (requiem for the rockets, cowgirl in the sand overall around 7/10
Man I love Neil Young. While this isn’t my favourite album of his - nothing is gonna surpass After the Gold Rush - it’s still a brilliant album. It has some of his best jams in Down by the River and Cowgirl in the Sand, one of his best songs in Cinnamon Girl and one of his prettiest songs with the title track. The only thing that holds this back from being a 5/5 for me is Running Dry (the one with the fiddle war crimes). Don’t think it’s bad necessarily, just drags on a little bit. Overall, love this album. Highlights: Cinnamon Girl, Everybody Knows this is Nowhere, Down by the River, Cowgirl in the Sand. Meh: Running Dry
Solid folk rock with some of his best work. This is a case where I prefer his longer songs and love the jammy nature of them. NY and Crazy Horse are still one of the best live acts I've ever seen. YouTube their cover of A Day in the Life at Glastonbury and behold. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GZFtWxFBAkg Standouts: Cinnamon Girl Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere Down by the River Cowgirl in the Sand Low points Found Round & Round a bit boring. Running Dry was fine and the fiddle didn't commit atrocities but didn't love it
Liked this a lot! I could see myself listening again which gets it a 4.
Chill country/folk-rock that landed well with me. 4/5
Na Joni Mitchell heb ik de tweede Spotify-rebel van deze week. Het album begint met een klepper: Cinnamon Girl en eindigt met een klepper: Cowgirl in the Sand. En daartussen? Nog meer kleppers met uiteraard Down by the River. 4.3!
I’ve learned to like Neil young, maybe because being on Spotify means its not jammed with ads, or maybe listening to the first csn album (though without Neil) upped my interest in this kinda music, or it’s knowing about the ‘it’s better to burn out than to fade away’ line on one of his other albums being in Kurt Cobains suicide note or it could be harvest… needle and the damage done is great and I like there’s a world…. Tangent aside… this album… I found it a bit front heavy, the ones I liked were the first couple of songs. Cowgirl in the sand was good though, it was really just the first two tracks on side 2 I had gripes with
Solid NY
Another good one from Neil Young. Cinnamon Girl, Down by the River, and Cowgirl in the Sand are exceptional.
I think I quite like Neil Young. This album was great I really enjoyed it. It took its time and kinda wandered which I really liked. Maybe that was because I was listening to it on a sunny Friday afternoon and was in a good mood but it doesn't matter. I loved the longer songs that just kinda noodled around for a while in the middle I thought everyone sounded great during those bits. I don't mind Young's voice, it's not my favorite but it doesn't bother me. I liked the wandering feel to the lyrics and the overall album. This very much felt like an album I should listen to while driving through Montana or somewhere out west.
This isn’t the best Neil Young album but it’s still classic Neil Young and Crazy Horse (they give it that extra rock vibe) some of the songs are long but their musicianship keep it interesting. Probably be other Neil Young records id play first but this just shows how great an artist he is in his prime because this is a 4/5
Great mix of the folk music he's know for and a more hard edged guitar forward sound.
I enjoyed this well enough although I don't think it's Young's best work. Just about a 4.
smooth and groovy and fun. kind of slid off of me
9/10 Neil Young continues to be great
Big fan of Neil. Classic
Love this classic album
Very good. 3 classic songs and the rest good.
I recognized a number of these tracks. I like Neil Young generally, and this one is a bit more rock and less folk/country. I liked it but it's not my favorite of his.
Still not a Neil Young fan but I quite like this album. I'm not sure why.
4/5
This isn't what I'd usually listen to, but I really liked it. Thanks Neil and Crazy Horse
It has been quite a while since I spoke about Neil Young. So long, in fact, that his music had yet to be put back on Spotify. Rust Never Sleeps was a wonderful album, and a surprising precursor to the history of grunge music. But this record doesn’t really fit into the same category as that. The late 60s, going into the 70s, were a big period for Neil. He was actively involved in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and began working on his solo career. After the general lack of success and acclaim that his self-titled debut in 1968 received, he geared up for something bigger and came together with Crazy Horse. Rust Never Sleeps definitely showed the power of this group, but I think listening to this sophomore release made it more apparent just how Neil flourished when in collaboration with those gentlemen. Contrary to what I was expecting, Cinnamon Girl immediately makes it apparent that this album is actually much more based in hard rock. But more than any other album I’ve heard from him, this record proves that Neil is actually quite a talented guitar player himself. Considering the first two Led Zeppelin albums came out in the same year, I don’t think it’s far off to say that Neil sort of caught the hard rock wave before it really hit the mainstream. I’m not sure where this consensus came from for a lot of people, but Neil Young isn’t the most popular classic rock artist out there. He often gets a lot of flak for being the pothead, hipster’s favorite singer. Some think he’s super overrated, and overall a bad singer. Now I am neither of those things. I just really like his voice and think he makes nice music. This record contains two much longer songs, at nine and ten minutes in length. And this jam band approach they take is super cool, and makes me think a Neil Young and Crazy Horse live album where they expand on those songs would be really cool. I consider myself a humble fan of Neil Young. I admire everything I’ve heard from him, but I’m also realistic with myself about it. No it’s not the greatest thing I’ve ever heard, but it definitely hits in the right moment. Rating: 8/10
Nice folk sound.
A good album with quite a few amazing songs.
O neil tá velho já
One of my favorites. The jam heavy classics Down By the River and Cowgirl in the Sand anchor the record and Cinnamon Girl and the title track are true highlights. Get past Requiem for the Rockets and this is a winning disc.
