Not quite digging this modern R&B record. Not hating, just not for me today. It doesn’t consistently have deep grooves, interesting instrumentals, or catchy melodies. There are flashes of impressive vocals, solid pockets, unique sounds, and cool production flourishes - but just enough to catch my ear briefly and soon be forgotten. Competent, but as a whole not grabbing me (though I’ll admit replaying a few songs on headphones was more interesting than when in my car)
Not my jam. Maybe I’m too old but there are no songs with any real meaning here.

I kept waiting for it to start....and I think I heard what(resembled) a tone, as well as rhythm, and beat. Then, a song popped on that actually caught my attention for at least a minute long. Whatever this long, dull experiment is, I'm just glad it's over. Favorite Track: "Broken Clocks".
Again, whoever picked the albums for this did a horrible job when picking recent albums. Surely there's some *good* modern stuff out there that's also significant?
This was not my thing at all. Love Kendrick Lamar, but he wasn’t enough to save this album.

It may be that this is a really great debut album. And it's certainly very brave to bombard listeners with wet and sticky sex dreams. I found the lyrics distasteful and didn't like the music or the vocals. I stopped after three tracks and won't be listening to it again. 1/5

First a disclaimer: I am not the target audience for this. This is not for me, and that is perfectly fine. If you like it, good for you. Art is subjective. So yeah. I do not like this. It all blends together into a sound that I just don't find interesting. Autotune is a travesty and there is so much of it on this that I just can't. What does SZA really sound like? We'll never know! Lyrics are not great. Music is not great. Vocals are irritating. It all feels very manufactured and synthetic. SZA could be a robot and it wouldn't really change things.
Day633 - this is directed straight at gen z and they can have it
Bunch of post-melodic fried 'n' compressed vocalizing that sounds like it was made up on the spot and then autotuned to fit the key of the backing track that a raft of producers (including The Donuts, LoveDragon and Scum, of course) cooked up. Lyrics are an unmediated first-draft craft-free voice-to-text brain dump that probably came straight from the Notes app (and sung with phone in hand in the studio, most likely).
Not for me, at all. I tried to give it a chance but only made it a song and a half in before I had to give up.

I tried. I’m a 50-year-old white man. I’m sure it’s empowering for women to finally get to sing/rap about their genitals too, but it’s hard for me to seriously consider this within days of getting to review The Beatles. I’m sure SZA will do fine without my approval.
I do not dislike neo-soul or temporary r'n'b, but why this album with its autotune vocals, mediocre lyrics, pussy this, dick that, is in the list, and not, for example, Alicia's Keys' "Songs in A Minor" is a complete mystery to me, maybe I'm too old, (gen x), but this is not my cup of tea.
Lots of auto-tune, and her vocals don't have any pattern to them. Imagine someone just singing a stream of consciousness throughout their day. That's what this is.

I feel like the point of music like this is the lyrics - the music itself is kept very safe, familiar, and homogenous to make it more mass appealing, and what people really relate to and find interesting is the words. Really not the type of music for me. I was switching between not really paying attention and not really enjoying what I was listening to for most of the duration of this record. Some songs were alright and some were really not to my liking, couldn't tell you which are which. A lot of late 2010's early 2020's music sounded like this and I really cannot stand it.
This is my third 1★ rating in a row. What an awful week this has been. This is garbage! Go away!
I can’t seem to think of a reason why this album is on this list. Overproduced and generic, tons of autotune, and awful lyrics.

The album cover depicts fly tipping. For those who don’t know fly tipping is the dumping of rubbish by dirty twats who cannot be arsed going to their local refuse collection point or have to pay to dispose their trade rubbish, so decide to dump it on pretty country lanes and fields. A despicable and anti social act which says a lot about the calibre of person guilty of perpetrating this filthy habit. All the above also describes the contents of this album. 1/5 24/5/25

Personal taste (isn't it all) but man do I hate this "style" of singing when I can even get by the processing. What does she really even sound like? Who tf knows - this is one of the most - if not THE most - overly-processed albums on this list. Even forgetting that (because singing sucks anyways) these lyrics would have to be better to be trash. Complete and pedal-to-the-floor pass on this robotic boring and just middle-school stupid soulless cut and paste project. 1/10 1 star

Yet another hip hop album. Beginning to wonder if this generator is being run by AI technology. There can be little justification to defend the quality of a lot of the albums that crop up on here. Certainly way too many hip hops do. Very disappointing

This is the 52nd album I’m rating. I’ve heard great things about SOS but not a lot about Ctrl. Adding to my Playlist - Doves in the Wind, Go Gina, Broken Clocks, Anything, Wavy (Interlude), Pretty Little Birds, and 20 Something. Not Adding to my Playlist - Supermodel, Love Galore, Drew Barrymore, Prom, The Weekend, Garden (Say It Like Dat), and Normal Girl. Supermodel - I’m have a natural disdain for radio music. The Weekend - I lost my review while writing this and I’m annoyed. All in all I liked 7/14 songs. This wasn’t the greatest but it was pretty good and on a different day I might rate it higher. However, I just don’t like this type of music today. I accidentally gave this 5 stars and had to edit it to 3 stars.
Another album where I feel I'm forcing myself to continue listening. Not a good sign. The autotune, which I'm normally fine with in moderation, is pretty out-of-control here. It makes it feel like SZA (pronounced "scissah") isn't putting any effort into her singing. The lyrics themselves are actually fine in general, excluding the first two tracks (Supermodel and Love Galore) which really leave a bad aftertaste heading into the meat of the album. Here are a few especially bad samples: "Let me tell you a secret / I been secretly banging your homeboy / Why you in Vegas / All up on Valentine's Day?" "You gots a fetish / You gots a problem / Now it's a problem, oh no / Skrrt, skrrt on bitches / I don't know these bitches / Dig dirt on bitches" SZA definitely has the pipes for some truly fantastic singing, and she flexes those pipes often – but her vocal is marred by poor instrumental accompaniment, repetitive melodies, lyrics that don't really say anything, and autotune that makes her sound bizarre and unnatural. Re the autotune – I have a similar complaint about Charli XCX's music (though compositionally and energetically, she's far superior). What of the instrumental? Broken Clocks stands out as the only track with an obvious material instrument – the acoustic guitar – and for that reason it's a huge breath of fresh air amidst a sea of uninteresting electronic noise. A few songs have trap beats, others have simple unlayered synths, still others have a sluggish electronic bassline... it's just not interesting enough to really grab the listener's attention. I have to assume it's built for listeners to focus on the vocals, but as mentioned previously, those are flawed for their own reasons. One other quirk I noticed is a reliance on the 2nd of a tonic/major chord and 4th of a tonic/minor chord in SZA's melodies. Modern pop seems to do this a lot; it can be seen with artists like Doja Cat, Lizzo, even Taylor Swift. In just about every track (and possibly even every line in some tracks) SZA clings onto this melodic idea. I would say it's an artifact of a genre, but seeing how universal it is only recently, it's probably more an artifact of a musical era. It's a bit distracting when these notes are used constantly instead of just as passing notes. After this album, I went ahead and listened to SZA's later album SOS (2022), which is musically pretty similar but dives more into melodic hooks and sound layering than Ctrl. I reckon 2017-SZA could take some notes. 1/5 Key tracks: Drew Barrymore, Broken Clocks, 20 Something
I actually disliked this so much I had to give up halfway through. There's nothing particularly interesting about this album. Her voice is solidly alright, but there's nothing special going on. Musically or lyrically. Lots of swearing for swearing sake which really doesn't get you very far with me. 0/10 would like to never listen to any of this again

As shallow as a muddle puddle. Shitty autotune applied throughout. The lyrics and content are utterly, utterly dreadful. No artistic merit at all. It gets one feeble extra half-star because some of the production is quite good, and the song 'Prom' isn't bad. However I'm still rounding that 1.5 down.

Edit: Nothing changed my mind. Got a second song where she mentions shaving her legs though. Give me Janet Jackson's "Control" album any day over this.

I'd heard that this album was intensely personal, innovative and had great reviews, so I was looking forward to hearing it. I was disappointed. The backing tracks are intricate and jazz infused, which is vaguely interesting in an academic sense, but as an older millennial I just couldn't connect with the themes at all. Me agradó mucho la idea original de uno de los discos recientes y que no había ni escuchado el nombre de la artista. Triste decepción. La música por sí sola está bien. Nada especial, nada malo, simplemente bien. Si fuera solo un instrumental, habría sido un álbum intermedio, pero no lo fue. La mayor desventaja de este álbum fueron las voces y las letras. Fueron horribles. Realmente terrible. No soy de los que deberían hablar de lo buenas que son las voces porque de seguro en menos de lo que espero voy a estar alabando en esta misma lista a alguien como Patti Smith, pero este estilo de canto de sonsonete R&B moderno que el chiste es sonar de hueva no lo aguanto. No sé cómo describirlo, pero si quien lo escuchó creo lo entenderá (y probablemente habrá quien no esté de acuerdo conmigo). Realmente no puedo soportar ese estilo vocal. Si en algún momento descubre cómo dejar de cantar con hielo seco en la boca, pudiera interesarme. Las letras también bastante sosas. El peor ejemplo es "Doves in the Wind". No me molestan en lo más mínimo las canciones sexuales y de hecho con la colaboración esperaba que me pudiera agradar pero fue quizá de lo peor del disco. No sé si se supone que tiene algo de comedia. De cualquier manera, no mejoró la canción. No hubo nada especial ni interesante en este disco. Como dije, la instrumentación estaba bien. Si quisiera esa instrumentación, puedo poner esas mezclas lo-fi de 10 horas para trabajar que hay en youtube. Realmente no hay nada más que decir sobre este disco, el contenido está intentando ser mucho y no ofrece nada. No encajó conmigo.
R&B genérico y aburrido. Empieza bien (tanto como me puede gustar el género) y después se cae en la colaboración con Kendrick Lamar. La primera vez que lo escuché no me había parecido tan malo y meses después vi que no lo había calificado. En esta segunda vuelta me quedé con las ganas de escuchar lo que según yo me había gustado. 1.5 estrellas que bajan a 1 porque va directo al olvido.
Ya sabemos que no me gusta el rap y/o hip hop, pero que encima canten como víctimas de un accidente cardiovascular en el cerebro, no más ya no. Ctrl + Alt + Del
