Enjoyed some of the tracks on this album, but got a little repetitive for me. Highlights: "Drew Barrymore" and "Anything"

I barely managed through the first listening, although the opening was very promising - "Supermodel" is vocally a pretty song. I think that cameos by Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar (whose solo work I respect immensely) killed the whole vibe for me. Too much autotune and effects in this one. The tracks are simplistic and as much as SZA's voice can be beautiful I don't feel like it was done justice. Nothing really stuck with me. But I'm open to listening more of her songs somewhere in the future, as she surely knows how to use her voice.

Never listened. Expectations: Low - Verdict: Not for me - Familiar from featuring on some Kendrick but I'm expecting pretty generic pop. First few tracks are ok but I just find it a bit bland. The rest of the album doesn't have any standout moments either. I don't dislike this, it's absolutely fine but nothing more than that.

"Forrest Gump had a lot going for him" is just one of the lyrical """"""""""""gems"""""""""" on this thing. Here's a few more just for good measure: "Someone bring the tacos" "I'm sorry I don't shave my legs" "My booty getting bigger even if it ain't" "You know I'm sensitive about having no booty" "I wanna take all of my hair down and let you lay in it" Talking more objectively, her vocals are strong and "Prom" is legitimately a good song. But the lyrics really ruin a lot of the decent aspects here. I guess I should have figured given the hook on her biggest hit is "I might kill my ex"

This is a fine example of a style of music that I don’t find especially moving or interesting. SZA is well respected in this genre and has worked with several artists that I respect and enjoy, like Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino, but I can’t say I found her superlative to others in this category.
There is some good music underlying some of the songs on this album. Unfortunately, most of the songs are of standard rap themes = casual obscenities and vulgarities seasoned with enough autotune to make me lose my mind. There was some notably good drum programming on some tracks.
Ctrl drifts along on lo-fi, chilled beats and candid, NSFW lyricism, with songs that blur together into one continuous mood.

Ik heb hier niks mee. Het klinkt zoetjes, maar de dingen waar het mens zich druk om maakt, daar maak ik me niet druk om. Als het nou nog politiek van aard was, maar het is wat dom relatiegeneuzel, met een krachttermpje hier of daar. Maar zoals een of andere oma halverwege zegt: doe lekker je ding, ik vind het niks maar ik laat je verder je gang gaan.
Daar hebben we hem hoor. Het niemandalletje van de lijst. Dat had ze zelf ook wel door. Dus alles wordt ingevlogen om het op te kloppen. Heeft dat geholpen? Nee. Het hoofdingrediënt blijft weinig voorstellen. Dan maar een nummer over poesjes op het album. En omdat dat haar niet past (en het opgeklopt moet worden) vooral uitgevoerd door een bekende meneer. Ok, dat nummer valt wel op. Maar levert juist minpunten op. Mijn boek is te oud. Wiki-en dan maar. Volgens wiki wordt vooral de vocale levering gewaardeerd. Aaahhh....Wait...wut? Dat heet autotune wiki....

This album brings back memories of taking my teenage nieces shopping and the tune Doves in the Wind was playing at full volume. I didn't enjoy the experience and I don't enjoy it now. Some nice lo-fi beats (is that what the kids say?) But relies too much on the overuse of profanities to try and be "cool". Its the "chocolate starfish..." of hip hop. This won't hold up over time.

What a pointless album. Some of the samples and mixing are alright. Maybe cut the four and a half minute song about scheduling. This feels like it's mostly posturing about stuff while acting like it's hard.
When SZA was starting to get buzz I checked in and didn't get it, I knew I was starting to age out. This album productionwise kind of sounds like AI slop. Way too over produced. Her voice and cadence have potential. I tried to find something more stripped down, found a version of 20 Something that was better than this album version. I had to take a brake in the middle of this and listen to some Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald to remind myself of the high bar. I struggled but made it through. I enjoyed the audio quality of the skits with her Mom and Granny.
I'd like to try more music like this, but for me the lyrics were a bit too conversation and simplistic.

Some of the reviews here are crazy lol, lots of "i listen to everything but cRap & hip-hop" coded takes. anyway, damn it's almost been ten years since this dropped? It's alright, not the biggest fan. Has a nice tone to it but always felt too safe. Was absolutely huge during 2017 and some of the singles still pinged in my brain but this was always better served in the background than as an active listening experience. The hooks as they were are basically predetermined. Favorite Tracks: Prom, Go Gina, Pretty Little Birds
I've unfortunately never really "gotten" SZA. Just don't think her music is for me!
Oh man, I've been dying for something more recent and I really, really wanted to like this, but it was just so, so dull. So much autotune smothering everything. Lyrics that seem totally fixated on money and boys and teenage attitudes. Backing tracks that all seemed to do the same thing. After listening, the only thing I could remember was getting Kendrick - one of the most capable, fascinating rappers in existence - to repeatedly shout 'PUSSY". I can see that it's influential because so much pop music in recent years is trying to copy it, but there's just no depth. The musical equivalent of a petrol station microwave hamburger.

I’m not sure who the female singer is who made it popular to change the sounds of words when they’re singing, but I need to get in a time machine, go back, find them as a child, and smother them. Ugh. But just to show I’m all about equality, whatever rapper made mumbling popular in hip-hop, once I’ve smothered the singer, I’m doing the same to him. And now, that brings me to SZA’s Ctrl. She doesn’t seem to be much on spelling, which may explain her weird word pronunciation. Now, you might think I hated this album, but I actually can appreciate it. It at least sounds different, like someone was trying to innovate rather than just follow the same old pattern most record companies want. Are there still record companies? Are there still records? I’ve heard of SZA before, but I assumed I wouldn’t want to hear her stuff because, well, I’m old. But I actually quite liked Ctrl. It’s as close to an old-fashioned soul album as we can get these days, probably. There are no real bangers, as most of the songs are about love, or maybe more like lust. If she indeed wrote the lyrics, she really gets quite vulnerable. However, this album is one of those where the songwriting credit goes to like 8 people persong, so maybe she just gets handed the lyrics and sings when it’s time to sing. As I said, I’m an old school guy, and I have no delicate sensibilities, but I miss the old days when you couldn’t say the dirty words you meant. I Can’t Get No Satisfaction wouldn’t hit the same if it were I Can’t Get No P….you know? The song Doves in the Wind is about the importance of P. But the word is said so often, it’s like it's beating you over the head with P. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to giggle like a schoolgirl or clutch my pearls, but what I ended up doing was rolling my eyes. Sometimes, just because you have the freedom to say the words that shock doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better. It's just hacky and lowest common denominator, in my opinion. Drew Barrymore, track 4, not the daytime TV host, sounds like it could be a country song, or at least what passes for country today. Worse, becomes wirf in this song. Did Adele do all this changing of word sounds? I know Duffy did for sure. So, as I was listening to SZA and working, I really didn’t pay much attention, except for them saying P about 256 times in the Doves In the Wind. Then The Weekend came on, not the singer, track 6, the first certified banger on the album. Okay, Prom is pretty great, too. Of course, The Weekend has songwriting credits from Timbaland and Justin Timberlake. And when I mean it’s a banger, it’s a slow funk groove that would normally be described as baby-making music. As Ron Burgundy might say, Unnngghhh. Aqualung. The song is about how SZA is involved with a man who has three chicks, and she’s on the weekend shift. This guy must be an idiot; this will blow up in his face so bad he’s liable to get set on fire. Then, as the album goes on, I started to really get into it. Even the weird changing of the sounds of words couldn’t pull me out of the groove. By the end of the album, I felt it was much better than yesterday’s Christina Aguilera album, because I believed everything SZA told me. Ctrl is not an album I’m going to listen to over and over, but I’m glad I dipped my toe in to see what she was all about. Is it an all-timer? I think it’s too early to say that. Come back to me in 50 years, in which case I’ll be dead, so it won’t matter anyway.

I mean I don't particularly care for it. The beat is okay, but it's kind of the same beat for the entire album. I think all the reviews going "how DARE a black woman sing about SEX this is the worst thing EVER MADE" who also turn around and go "hell yeah, all of these rock and roll albums from the 70s and 80s are the best things ever made" need to shut the fuck up. I wish I could've said it was a surprisingly enjoyable album and give it a higher score out of spite but alas. It's not really for me. All that being said, "You could never trivialize pussy" may be the best lyric ever written.
SZA has a good voice and the music is OK too, but to me there isn't enough difference between the vocals on all the tracks. Like many similar albums I have difficulty deciphering the lyrics. That's not a fault of SZA - they're just not in an accent I find easy to listen to, plus there's lots of slang which doesn't mean anything to me. Some tracks had subtitles and it appears that the intent of each song is to insert as many sexual references and expletives as possible. If you want to that it's OK with me, but it doesn't do anything for me.

Sort of hip hop w/ a heavy influence of rock, some soul (listed as soul, maybe new soul but not really soul in sense of Marvin Gaye Soul). A lot of computer mixing (overmixed in my opinion, I think I see a Commodore 64 behind her on the album cover, I think I hear some Commodore 64 sound bites.) Her falsetto is annoying, her actual singing voice OK. Heavy use of the N word for no good reason doesn't age well. I'm not against black artists using it to either make a political statement, counter racism, or to desensitize ('own') the word but just throwing it out to say your part of the community doesn't add anything. She's OK. She kind rocks a low self-esteem, 'not hot, but not bad' girl next door effect throughout. Fairly sexual album, don't mind that but a lot is pretty immature. I don't need filler like the end of track on Broken Clocks - it's not a skit, it's not a song, it's not filler just 'there'. I feel like Kendrick Lamar fucks up things - wonder with no Kendrick influences how much better the album would be (however I'm guessing a lot less financially successful so - probably a good call by SZA). One of the best albums of 2017? Probably. One of the best of all time? No. Not an album I felt I needed to listen to before I died.

I actively hated much of this album. Shallow, one dimensional lyrics, the use of auto tune, boring songs that seem endless. It got a little better further into it but not enough to raise my rating. I was hoping for something more like Frank Ocean's "Channel Orange" but this is empty and insipid.
Album No. 0096 on my list. I’m not really much into RnB, so I’ve never actually heard of either SZA or the album Ctrl (cool title though). I hence didn’t really know what to expect, but that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing, right? I mean, no expectations are difficult to disappoint… And to be honest, the album didn’t do much to not disappoint, I’m afraid. To my uneducated mind, it’s mostly just generic RnB, and the songs were not at all catchy despite this fact. SZA’s singing is quite fine at least. The lyrics didn’t appeal to me either - it’s not their vulgarity, I don’t mind that, but I still didn’t find them any good. I’ll add “Supermodel”, and “Doves In The Wind” to my playlist (the latter actually because its frequent use of the p-word actually made it memorable at least). *Sigh*, I’m sorry. I’ve realized that SZA is an incredibly popular artist, and I totally get why. I wish her all the best, but this is just not for me I’m afraid. 2/5 stars.
I'd rather listen to Drew Barrymore sing her favourite songs from The Wedding Singer than this. It's not horrible, but it's not good.
She has a very nice voice which I love to listen to. Unfortunately, R&B doesn't do it for me and sadly this did not change that.

It’s my first time listening to SZA. I only know her because of her collaborations with Kendrick. I actually went to the GNX tour and I must admit that I only went for Kendrick and SZA‘s performance did not do much for me. But I think it can be hard for a singer to convince an audience member if they haven’t checked out their music before. Supermodel is a banger and I loved the part about Let me tell you a secret … I laughed out loud. A great start. Unfortunately the rest of the album does not excite me that much. The beats are nice and well produced. SZA has a great voice. But I am not very interested in all these songs centered around love and vulnerability and all these insecurities. CTRL is not a bad record. But it’s also nothing I would listen to again.

While it may be better than the album i got last time, Ctrl isn't really that great of an album. The production is decent with some pretty nice sounding music even if it can get rather forgettable depending on the song but for the most part it is pretty alright. My main issue with this album though is the lyrics, many of them are extremely stupid with a constant overuse of sex terms (Doves In The Wind is an especially bad offender of this) which makes these lyrics really annoying. And in general, i can only really remember a select few songs from this album due to the majority of them being so forgettable. It really is a shame because i know that SZA clearly has quite a lot of musical talent, just none of it is really on display here. Best Song: Pretty Little Birds Worst Song: Doves In The Wind

This is similar to her follow-up where I adore the big singles and am so surprised how much I dislike the rest. The lyrics are cheesy which is amplified when she just decides to repeat what she just said. The instrumentation is pretty bare so you're left with just her vocals to grasp on to. I don't like her vocal style either where she holds a note while dropping the pitch like she's walking down the stairs. Rating: 2.4

It's an album in the worst genre of music ever invented - modern r'n'b - and starting off it doesn't disappoint. Or whatever the opposite of not disappointing really is. Screaming 'get some proper drums" to replace the stick on a tea bag drum machine. Then it surprises a bit with some songs. But it's modern r'n'b and ultimately dreadful.
The singles might distract from how amateurish the writing is in this album. Some might call it honesty, rawness or vulnerability but it did not come across that way for me.
Not my style. Alright beats I suppose, slower than expected but at least made lyrics clear. Not sure what makes the album great, and all I'll remember is the song featuring Kendrick Lamar saying pussy a lot

So boring I decided to watch videos on YouTube of some dude cooking a Gordon Ramsay-inspired sandwich and a chicken biryani. I feel really bad listening to this thing, but I guess it's not that fully terrible.

This album was pretty good. I know I would appreciate it more with repeated listens but with just the one, it was just pretty good. An interesting voice, and when I was able to listen while reading the lyrics you can see she has something to say, and I want to know what it is.

I was following the TDE crew pretty closely leading up to this and remember hearing Prom and felt like another Channel Orange might be upon us and then...well...[insert Principal Skinner meme] It’s fine, but I’m about as pulled into this as some of the random late 60s English folk and psychedelia. Just not for me. Judging by its success and her later feature on Luther - which is also...OK? - clearly, I am in the wrong here.
Didn't like it. Some OK woozy RNB production on some of the early tracks, but strikingly boring and beige compared to say CrazySexyCool.
The music and vocals are pretty good, enjoyable, she clearly has a unique talent. That said, it's difficult for me to get past the dirty lyrics on some of the tracks and truly enjoy the album. Songs like "Prom", "Garden", and "Broken Clocks" are good with 'clean' lyrics, but a few of the other tracks ("Doves in the Wind", "Love Galore", specifically), are just too profane, or gross, for me to appreciate. I will also never be comfortable hearing the n-word in any context. I don't listen to a lot of R&B like this in general, and I definitely don't listen to artists that use this type of language, so if this is normal and 'expected' for the genre, then I see why it's considered a pretty solid album. But whether these lyrics are written because that's really how people in this sort of culture talk about their lives, for their shock value, or because it's not considered 'profane' by the artist, it comes across as mostly unnecessary and distracting to me. And to be sure, I 'get it' and understand the social commentary behind "Doves in the Wind." It's a pretty clever take on men and how they pursue women in our society. And I understand this type of unique commentary might not be possible without the use of the language SZA chose to use. But it's still not comfortable for me to listen to. Final thought: I'm glad I listened to this for a peek into a genre and culture of music I'm only exposed to during the Super Bowl halftime, but it won't be something I'll ever actively revisit.

Yeah, no, can't understand why I should care about this one. I guess miss SZA has a nice voice and some of the tracks are quite chill. But it never feels like it's going anywhere, never gives me any reason to care about the music.

You know when you're just glad an album is over? THat's how I felt when I finished this. I think pop music simply isn't for me. SZA has a great voice, strong and bold vocals. It is the production of the album that really irritates me. Even listening to this in the summer, I cannot enjoy it. The best track on this was wavy, and yet that was an interlude, barely 1 minute long, but went the hardest. I gave SZA a go, but ultimately her music isn't for me. With that being said, she is clearly a talented artist.

I know I overuse "chill" but that's what this is. I do not like the auto tuning trap voice, though. The backing tracks are almost too simple. I wanted a little more complexity. Her rapping flow doesn't really make sense to me. And the lyrics. I hate the lyrics. I don't need a tribute to your or your partners genitals, male or female. This isn't a take on "modern love", it's just dick and pussy music.
Modern R&B bores me to tears. This one made it through my eardrums but not a single track made it to the part of my brain that remembers tunes. Pretty sure I already listened to this when I was listening to Rolling Stone's top 500 albums in order.

Awful. Auto tune, shitty guest rapper verses. A never ending stream of vulgar mediocrity. Knew I was in trouble after skipping the first two tracks thirty seconds into each. Bonus star for how much she values her vagina I suppose.
Its a well produced album but not my genre of preference. I daresay I'm not the target audience and I find it very difficult to find anything in this album to relate to. My issue with this genre is that it is musically incredibly simplistic, formulaic, and not being played on live instruments so the sound of the album relies almost entirely on the production quality. Really the only things left to judge the musical merit is the quality of the singing (good in this case) and the lyrics, in which I found absolutely nothing that moved me. Best song was "20 Something" which is rawer and the only song I can imagine enjoying live.

Having just watched wrestlemania I am currently suffering an irrational hatred for Travis Scott and his horrendously annoying autotune hate crime of a song, 'Feen'. Does he ever rap without using it? Besides his intervention Love Galore is quite nice. Three songs in there's already quite a lot of "n*ggaz and bitches" meaning I can't listen to this in any sort of company without retreating into my own anal cavity via a power-cringe. The little voicemail bits in between bring to mind Solange's record. The Kendrick song about shagging brings about another power cringe which miraculously returns me to human form. Outside of that it's pretty enjoyable. I got bored before the end but I'm definitely not target audience. Not for me, but I'm sure she'll cope.

Two or three songs were OK, including the openers. Then Kendrick Lamar showed up. Honestly, I like her individual songs better than any of the collabs. She’s got a good voice and a I like the vibe of her individually. But overall, the album didn’t hold me.
I liked the beat for Drew Barrymore but that was about it. I'm giving it an extra star because I'm not well-versed in rap. Still only two stars.

This is ok, but I’m very much not her audience. I don’t really get a lot of this, not much of it lands at all for me, but it’s definitely not terrible. I prefer it to some of the rap we’ve had on here, but there’s just something missing for me. Would never return but at least I know what she is about now, albeit I’m still not sure how to pronounce her name. She likes talking about her fanny mind, doesn’t she?!
There were some decent beats in here and SZA can sing. Production felt very 2010s at times in a Frank Oceany way, lots of meaningful space which is an effect I'm tired of. Not unlistenable but far outside my wheelhouse, feels very much like music for the kids these days. But then I do like lots of recent stuff so I think I'm just not a fan of whatever this is.
Doves in the Wind made me laugh - a very intimate examination of her relationship with her genitals (and the thoughts of Kendrick Lamar on it). I think this would have benefited from a harder edge - the production is extremely bland and a little dated - riffs aren't overly imaginative and the instrumentation is uninspired. Drew Barrymore sounded a bit like a TLC off-cut. Not shocking, by any stretch, just not for me.
This kinda thing makes me feel old. She can sing and rap, I just can't relate to the content. Don't particularly like the style either. It's too RnB for me. She's also rapping about things that would annoy me if a male rapper said it, but I suppose as a female she can say them? I think i get the appeal though, just not sure I'm the correct demographic. I did find myself going back and listening to bits again though so there's that. I think "Drew Barrymore" was my favourite. I'm going 2.5
As a teenage girl, I find myself in the minority when I say I do not adore the music of SZA. I’ve never listened to an album of hers in full, and this being my first time I was rather disappointed. Other than the well known songs I’ve heard through friends or other platforms, I found this album rather difficult to swallow. I do not deny its significance, however I can’t get behind it.

A beautifully well engineered and mixed album that insists upon sharing poor life choices with poorly chosen word choice lyrics (N-word and P-word) that could have been expressed by making other word choices that would have invited a wider range of listeners to lean in closer rather than leaning away and ignoring the message entirely during the first half of the album. I couldn't tell if she has a wonderful voice because they never let us hear it underneath all that auto-tuning. After listening to the song "Drew Barrymore" it was unclear to me why it was named after her. After reading about the song's creation, maybe association would have been clearer if it was named "Poison Ivy"? Favorite tracks: "Broken Clocks" and "Pretty Little Birds"

You know what with a more distinctive singer this would have been in contention for a 3.5 or a 4. The beats, samples and melodies are a strong representation of contemporary pop r and b rap. Auto-tuned from A to Z, she's not quite able to lift this for me into something distinctive. It's a solid 2.5 but afraid it's a round down.
Not going to have a go at it but I'm not into it, just seems like fairly standard modern R&B. Only moment I thought I particularly liked the instrumentals were during Normal Girl and Doves In The Wind The singing is sort of irritating. It feels pretty out of place with the acoustic instrumentation, especially with the heavy autotuned moments. Travis Scott feels like a pisstake on the second track, suppose that's how he usually sounds but I don't like that heavily processed style at all. I liked Kendrick's feature, though Not going to knock how sexual the lyrics are, I don't really care. It seems like women get a much harder time for that than men, as if it's invalid or somehow more vulgar. I read up a little about SZA, and I really, really didn't want to like this album, as she just seems like a horrible person. Turns out I didn't have much to fear, as it was a mess of auto-tune, tinny trap sounds, and inane lyrics. If this album is supposed to be this generation's "Miseducation", then god help us all. There were a couple of places where I appreciated the guest vocalist, so I'm going with 2 stars, but it's a low 2. Pretty tacky and derivative R&B.

Half way through the album and it just isn't something I would put on my home speakers for background. I like a lot of hip-hop but this isn't an album that clicks for me. I also listened to SOS and find I like that album quite a bit more.

I can't get on board with Ctrl, it sounds too generic to interest me, doesn't come close to the quality or depth of the genre from 10 or 20 years ago, it's pretty shallow and I continue to dislike the modern production of music and the heavy heavy use of autotune. Dull as fuck 2.

Conflicted. Lyrically a mess and the first half to middle of the album is trash. Even with the instrumentals on some of the early songs be pretty great it is ultimately destroyed by the awful lyrics. The latter portion of the album is much better and man if it would have just been those songs this would probably have been a much more enjoyable experience. 4/10

I have thought for a while and will still maintain that Travis Scott is an idiot. That isn’t really relevant here, but this is my soapbox and he’s on this album, so here we are. On to the album. This wasn’t written or recorded for me. I made little if any connection to the themes or lyrics of this album. I instead tried to focus on the production, which was very good. SZA has an excellent voice, and it sounds great on this album, I just wish she’d use it for music that showed it off better. Overall this album just comes off as immature to me. An entire song (“Doves in the Wind”) uses the word “pussy” 23 times by my count. That same song also talks about how Forrest Gump could’ve gotten laid but was a good guy so he didn’t. I haven’t seen that movie in a long time so maybe I’m forgetting parts of it but I don’t remember him turning down Jenny for sex. Like seriously, what? Parts of this are just really ham fisted. I really liked the voice clips of SZA’s mom at the end of some songs, and how we don’t know it’s her mom until the end of the album. That rewards listeners who sit and listen to the whole thing, which is cool and unexpected these days where the art of the album is generally lost in popular music. I didn’t need to hear this before I died. This felt like a pick made to just make the book more relevant, like the editors were grasping for more modern content and grabbed this to make them seem edgy. I’d be surprised if it’s in the next edition. This wasn’t for me. That doesn’t mean it’s bad, but it wasn’t for me. Two stars. Sorry, SZA. Standout tracks: Drew Barrymore, 20 Something
Once again: I’m not sure there are 1001 albums you need to hear before you die. There was absolutely nothing special about this aside from the possibility that music in 2017 was SO terrible it made this seem interesting, which is entirely possible. (No offense to SZA, who seems to be well-liked and is lovely, I’m sure.)

Considering how relatively infrequently new music gets added, I'm surprised this one made the list. There are really no stand-out songs, and a lot of the lyrics are pretty cringeworthy. I was hoping to like this more -- I don't know anything about SZA, except her second-most recent tweet is a Beatles quote, so she has my respect for that at least.

This is the first album from the 2010s I have been served up on this 1,001 album-listening journey. SZA's musical choices and beats are pleasant to my ear and I didn't actively dislike the album, but I would never revisit this one. Too much auto-tune and monotone sing-rapping. Bright spots for me were "Doves in the Wind" (which may contain the most consistent use of the "p-word" I've ever heard and I actually chuckled quite a bit throughout), and the single "Drew Barrymore." As an album, though, this is a pass for me. Interesting factoids from Wikipedia: *SZA contributed heavily to the album's lyrics, co-writing all fourteen tracks. Hard for me to distinguish between the songs. Not unenjoyable, just felt like I was walking through a supermarket.

I won't listen to this again but I can see the appeal for Gen Z, and I'm quite happy to see the Kids These Days excited about pop that isn't a complete rehash of the late 90s/early 2000s. This album is definitely reflective of the recent, modern trend with R&B and soul music. There was nothing wrong with this, and the album was listenable, but overall I didn't find it remarkable.

More than willing to accept that it might be for someone. But it is not for me.
Toss another artist in the pile labeled, "couldn't write a melody if their life depended on it". Nearly an hour of childish, tuneless wailing over basic-ass, boring beats. So annoying. And don't get me started on how inane these lyrics are. It's like the whole album was written by middle schoolers but then they thought, "throw some cuss words at it so people will think we're grown up and nobody will suspect we're just three 12-year-olds in a trench coat." Stupid. This was clearly added to the list prematurely.

Whenever an album comes up on this list, I look at it from the perspective of why I must hear the album before I die. I'm drawing a blank on this one. The musicianship has some value and it sounds well produced but SZA seems like just another artist too reliant on autotune and explicit lyrics. There are some catchy tunes but most of it was just run of the mill R&B with some hip hop mixed in. I've heard a bunch of albums that take me out of my comfort zone and make me want to give it another listen but this is not one of them.

Today, I have been generated an album of hers which is considered an essential album, so I think I must live under a rock. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Broken Clocks There are a few exceptions to this genre which surprise me and leave me feeling very impressed. Unfortunately, this was not one of them. She’s undoubtedly a very talented singer, but there wasn’t much else that had me intrigued, and singing is only one part of the puzzle which makes a great song or album. Each to their own, but I just found this quite dull and uninspiring. Also, there is a song about her “pussy being facetious”. What does that even mean?

Honestly, there are songs on here that I have absolutely no interest in listening to. I just don't need a song that repeats pussy a thousand times. Call me old fashioned, but I just prefer double entendres or something a little more veiled than just pussy in my face constantly. Give me some variation in the lyrics. I got what you were talking about the first five times you said it. Just seems lyrically lazy a d just trying to attention grab because they can't get attention any other way. That said, if you ignore all of the songs that have featured artists on them, the album's pretty good, but the featured artists really did this album no favors.

First, I remember when Marilyn Manson first hit big and his lyrics were shocking to society. Later in his career, he started saying shocking things just to say them. Just to get a rise out of people. SZA, on this album is clearly trying the same thing. But it's 25 years later. People don't get shocked like that anymore. And since none of this is on the radio, there is no one to offend. Second, I kept thinking while listening that SZA is obsessed with game playing with people. And my thought was confirmed when she literally claimed that she wasn't. You can't be upset that your man cheats on you when you cheat on him as well. And pitting people against each other for the chase isn't nice. I know this makes me seem like a conservative asshole. I swear I am not. I am not judging SZA at all here. But her lyrics, which are the stand out as they are laid on a bed of rather boring R&B and hip-hop audio tropes, leave much to be desired. Nothing new here.
