Reviews (page 11 of 13)
Vafan ett till album från the cure där jag inte hört en enda låt. Eller jo har hört a forest! Borde jag skämmas? Nej, för resten e inte så kul :(
Look, the Cure are great artists and as a band are iconic, influential and inspirational. Is this the greatest evidence of this, probably not, would I suggest you start at one of their other albums, probably. Should you model your look off Robert Smith, well that’s just up to you.
Expected more, this can't be their best album. 2
I like some of the Cure, but this ain't it
Recombinant album. This was very prototypical goth music in my mind, and sounded a lot like the police if they had a worse drummer (lovingly), and also Sting wasn't as talkative. Overall, enjoyed as an album to lock in with. Favorite track was Play for Today.
This sounds like a collection of ideas put to tape. Anyone who tells you this is good is lying to themselves.
yeah...no
This album isn't bad, but it isn't anything remarkable either. It gave me the impression of a British teenage boy who just discovered GarageBand for the first time. It's a very dry record, which is fine, just not my cup of tea. The drums and bass sound fine, but I didn't really like the guitar sound. It's stringy enough to be annoying but not enough to feel that rhythmic. I think The Cure isn't for me.
Not bad but it really felt like background noise for most of it
Nothing for me. Guess I wasn’t high enough.
Meh..three was nice..closing track was good ig…overall just too boring
This record was decent at best. I didn't enjoy much, and none of it was memorable. Favourite Track(s): The Final Sound, M Least Favourite Track(s): A Forest
not my favorite
nothing of note
Highlights: Play For Today, Three, A Forest, M I often see this record around but I don't really know much about it. I think I played it maybe once before, but it left no impression. This time around it was the same. The style was dull and the lyrics were full of some teenage romantic emo whining. The record is bloated with these "spooky" airy bits which are just too empty of any substance to justify how much they waste your time... It really feels like they had a single and decided to aura farm on the rest of the record. There are some tracks that do have potential but are dragged out (i.e. At Night). Highlights were meh, and the record even more so. Won't be revisiting.
p456. 1980. 2 stars. Dreary and miserable early 80s Brit synth pop. It's the musical equivalent of a grey, wet and cold February morning in Manchester. No thanks.
Didn’t mind it, it was chill, but not one of my favs tho :(
Review - this album is ok. It's not great. A Forest is great. But this album isn't. If the band that did this album didn't go on to be The Cure, this album would not be on this list. Those other, later Cure albums should be on this list, but this shouldn't. Rating - 4.5/10 Need to hear? NO
The Cure siempre funciona y tiene tantas canciones pegadizas que un disco de ellos siempre viene bien
On a certain day it might be a vibe but so far nothing really captured my interest. If I was depressed it would’ve slapped but I wasn’t and it kinda made me miserable.
Very very mellow. Need to be in the right mood.
Atmospheric mostly instrumental, maybe I do hate the Cure. However, some of the instrumentals are haunting and somewhat listenable.
I’m sorry but this one was so boring I guess I’ll start with the good by saying there’s nothing objectively awful with this one, nothing super skippable or ear grating The first song having absolutely nothing going on (I thought my speakers were broken at first) really set the tone. It’s just a bit too sleepy, the vocals aren’t really interesting at all. I don’t think there’s really a whole lot going on with cool instrumentation either. I know these guys make better music than this so a little disappointing to say the least
this is a nothing burger of an album
Unremarkable. Not one song that resonated with me, not one moment of "oh yeah that's a great song." Reminded me of the soundtrack playing in the dungeon from Silence of the Lambs. At least it was only 35 minutes long...
I must confess, i am a wannabe Cure fan rather than an actual fan. I’ve listened to Boys Dont Cry in it’s entirety but otherwise could probably only tell you the hits. Dont get me wrong, there are plenty of hits and they are amazing but i’ve just never been drawn to entire albums of theirs. I’ve probably listened to Disintegration all the way through a couple of times back in the day. I like Boys Dont Cry because it sounds like The Clash. I think i veer away from the others because often the songs have long intros that dont do anything for me except get me impatient. I get it sets the floaty, melancholic, we have all the time in the world and arent in any hurry type feeling but sometimes i am in a hurry. And honestly, who listens to a song like Pictures of You and says ‘I love that endless beginning where he doesnt sing and the same simple melody is played at the same low level if intensity’. No one. Anyway, this probably wasnt the best album to kindle a love for the Cure albums. I suspect it marks the beginning of their metamorphosis from Clash-esque punk rockers to Goth poster band (before maybe combining the 2 and ending up with pop-goth?). There is a nice simplicity in this album, but it doesnt go anywhere for me. I think it is the drums - too straight, no texture at all, might as well just be a snare keeping beat, you cant hear much else. His vocals are also mixed into the background here. Take the track ‘Three’ for example, cant hear the vocals. It must be deliberate, but why bother singing any words at all. The result is like listening to the same endless riff played over a loud click track. Then you get a song like A Forest and it all makes sense (though arguably the bass is at least interesting on this track and the intro doesnt go on and on).
Melancholy, with multiple instrumentals.
A tad boring, idnit?
Tylsää ⭐️⭐️
Ei kyllä millään tavalla ihmeellinen.
I feel like if I was into this genre of music, Seventeen Seconds would be the perfect album. Unfortunately I’m not, but I wouldn’t mind if I heard these songs on the radio for example.
Bit dissapointing as an intro to The Cure
Slow mellow goth. Luckily there are a few interesting events to keep it at a 2 … just
It's got a tone but in the end its fairly plodding and feels lacking the pulling power of there better albums it almost feels like this is included because of the band's name rather than due to merit.
nice basslines somewhat forgettable
I’m such a vocals and lyrics kind of person that music like this just doesn’t personally resonate as much as it probably does for others. I can appreciate the unique sound but I wouldn’t come back to listen to it again.
dzaan ertnairi albomia ra repetetive
I like the Cure but I didn't really vibe with this album.
Instantly forgettable. Not a single track I could listen to and think "that was something I'll go back to". Had no pre-conceived ideas or notions about this or them, but something to avoid in future.
Meh. One of the boring ones. Not very exciting.
not bad just not for me
Pretty mid
The album started and then it was over. I don't remember much of it to be honest. Very boring.
34 minutes of dreary music punctuated by one good song, "A Forest".
Atmospheric energy. Mischievous. One catchy song. Good for when you feel like a cheeky monkey but otherwise slightly boring and samey
I don't know what I was expecting, but I certainly wasn't expecting this album to be this boring. It's not "bad" but gets a 2 for how underwhelmed I am.
I never knew what The Cure sounds like. Now that I know, I feel... disappointed I guess. This must've been shocking when the album released but it appears tame today. There are some melancholic sounds but nothing to really boast of. Best songs are M and Three. 5/10, more confusing than anything.
Mood over substance. One salvageable song. Crazy to think the cure would evolve from this
did not care for the first song at all. boring and purposefully ominous. same with the song "three". some instrumentals in here dont work. i did enjoy a few songs (mainly "A Forest" because it appears in westworlf) but overall weaker than disintegration. 4/10.
Can see why it’s important to listen to, but good lord it’s sad. Lead singers voice is very monotone.
Not as good as Wish. Songs of a Lost World from ‘24 absolutely slapped.
Traurig og dølle greier.
Høydepunkt: A Forrest. Resten av plata ga meg ingenting.
Anemisk, introvert og ganske uinteressant. Lydbildet føles nedstrippa og kaldt. Gir meg lite, men fenger innimellom.
This album is not for me. Its cool that it has a very specific vibe, sound and atmosphere, but it gets way to repetetive for me. I ended up feeling bored and tired more than anything else. Just as the album ended spotify played A Strange Day from the cure as well. This song was so much more interesting and full.
too goth for me
This is one of those albums where I appreciate the creativity and uniqueness but would I listen to it as is on any given day? Nope. My rating is probably not a true reflection of what this music is in the grand scheme of things but to me this stuff is not what I gravitate towards.
This was the Cure's second album, where they were, according to Robert Smith, inspired from by going on tour with Siouxsie and the Banshees, but this is missing the excitement from the Banshees. It's so muted and reserved that it's almost ambient music, and I had a lot of trouble focusing on it. They would go on to create a lot of music I like, but all in all, this was pretty dreary and forgettable.
More instrumentals than I expected and less mopey as well. First time I ever listen to a full Cure album. Nothing very memorable sticks out to me.
Opens with a piano dirge. Hooooo boy. I've said it before but I actually like the Cure's rhythm section. I'm going out on a limb, though, and saying 'Play for Today' is just a worse version of 'Echo Beach by Martha and the Muffins. "Waiting for something to happen," from that Cure tune, encapsulates this record quite well. I simultaneously am bored by The Cure and can hear how they were influential on later music. It remains, however, sad music by four assholes in a cave. In much the way that some people just cannot cope with jazz, I fail to understand the cultural fascination with Robert Smith's performative moping and conscientiously bad hair. Thank goodness it's short. 2/5
Surprisingly forgettable
Sinister? Sure. Spooky? I guess. Boring? Absolutely.
Every time I listen to the cure, I get the hype a little bit more, but I still think this album in particular is pretty forgettable
what if the talking heads were boring….. thats the cure
Different vibe than the disintegration, less melancholic. Did not stick with me.
Quite an un-stimulating listen, except for some small peaks. Not quite my taste in general.
didn't cure me of anything tbh
shi it was mid i dont like it
crickets
Enjoyed it as background noise but there weren’t any songs that I really liked
Nothing stood out to me
It had some promise really lacks anything that massively captured my attention.
i just don’t like the cure
Too many boring instrumental parts. Sounds like the Cure, minus the cheekiness and catchy melodies.
The Cure is great but this didn’t sound like their best album to me.
There’s a close-mic’d, spare aesthetic to a lot of post punk around this time that has never quite been my thing. It probably does an incredibly accurate job describing what life in England felt like at this time: even in more upbeat music like Elvis Costello, it still sounds claustrophobic, mildewy, sunshine only visible refracted through clouds of smog. I hear a lot of Fragile-era Reznor and the minimalism of Britt Daniel rooted in Seventeen Seconds, but this move into minor chord sombreness didn’t really pay off for me until Pornography.
A Forest is a banger. Unfortunately its the only one amongst a lot of shoegazing shit.
I love The Cure but this was boring as hell.
Outside a couple of decent cuts, this was honestly a pretty unpleasant listen. Kind of boring and not particularly unique either. It’s only 35 minutes long, so I guess that’s a plus. Seems like my tradition of giving every new wave and post punk album two stars will live on! Highlights: Secrets, In Your House, A Forest
2/5
Not my fav. I like them here and there.
You know what this album reminds me of? The wizard of loneliness. Monotonous, quiet, tedious. Enjoyable but nothing aside from the opener and A Forest stick out to me. Consistent dour atmosphere, but it doesn't do much for me.
Robert Smith is an aquired taste, but this album does not contribute to that. Lovesong, Boys dont cry, Just like heaven ir Friday I'm in love are some enjoyable The Cure songs, but none are in this album.
The Cure constrói um suntuoso castelo gótico, com salões espaçosos e cobertos de névoa à espera de um baile… que nunca chega O castelo permanece belo, mas vazio, sem vida
boring... sorry 😞
im more of a lyricist type of person so i don’t really enjoy the album so far… not a lot of lyrics but a lot of instrumental which is okay but yeah… not something i would listen …. yeah so i didn’t finish it my head started to hurt IM SO SORRY
Almost a full instrumental record. Ethereal and atmospheric. It’s their jazz album. Not terribly memorable.
Not the cure to boredom.
More like seventeen hours. Dull stuff. The Cure is like the Smiths without the interesting parts and the good guitar. Friday I'm in Love is a great song, though.
eh, not very exciting to me
A fine album, just not my vibe. I think I have to rework my ranking scale…
2nd album of their discography and I think they hadn’t quite found their voice yet. Lots of instrumental and very basic. I agree with Wikipedia that a forest is the best one. Maybe im just not hip to the cure but their music got significantly better later on when they wrote Friday
Nup. Didnt find this enjoyable at all. Don't think The Cure are for me.
I just don't think The Cure are my thing - whiny sad boys like Joy Division who I've previously hated on this list. This was such a slog to get through, and I much prefer them leaning more pop than alternative.
I did not vibe with this one at all.
This album felt very dull and boring. It picked up a little bit at The Forest but then quickly fizzled back out.
nah not for me
Meh pretty boring mostly with like 1 track (the forest) that I sorta enjoy.
Doesn’t really do it for me. Just meh.
Meh
I know this is supposed to be an iconic album but it just didn’t hit for me.
fav: A Forest I don’t think I was into this that much. Which is surprising because I thought I would be into something described as gothic and electronic.
A Forest was the only skip on the Cure’s Greatest Hits. It’s a stand out track on this album. That said I didn’t hate the album and it was kind of cool to hear their earlier post punk roots.
So boring. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): N/A ⭐⭐: Didn't like it, didn't hate it. Saved no tracks.
First Album in our joint project! I dont think Dylan will like it... ...not sure I do 😂 Themes are subdued and hard to distinguish maybe im too dumb to get it, jist doesnt click with me. I do really like the moody synth and modulated guitar soundscapes, wouldnt be out of place in an 80s b movie. Just a bit fckn artsy. Top Tracks: In Your House, A Forest and Secrets
i've spent almost 3 months in the uk and The Cure making more and more sense to me the longer i stay. it gets dark at 4pm in the winters and is always drab and grey outside. of this + the big two Cure albums, this is the simplest stylistically. probably the weakest too. has some neat vibe pieces but doesn't have the songwriting or pathos that later albums would. deserves to be one of the 1001? uhhhh maybe? i think 3 is a good amount of albums to represent The Cure, and after Pornography and Disintegration what you choose to include is a matter of personal preference
Bit weird
Entirely unconnected to what they're doing here.
It's enjoyable but not my cup of tea.
Not bad but not doing anything for me. 2.5
I like the Cure more as a singles band. This was ok 2.5 stars
Very, very boring, especially in the first half. After an annoying song it picked up a little, but not enough to achieve mediocrity.
For a band so prolific, and with a lot of good music over a long career, ‘Seventeen Seconds’ is a really, really dour album. ‘In Your House’ and ‘A Forest’ are the only good songs here with a pulse. You can skip the rest and go straight to ‘Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me’ and ‘Disintegration’ which are far better albums.
The Cure, for me, has always been an acquired taste. _Disintegration_ and _Standing On A Beach - The Singles_ are part of the soundtrack of my life, but it took years of exposure before they became such. This album might get there, but, sadly, doesn't fall into the category of "pleasant surprise" on the first listen.
Good very 80’s jangly goth light good listen but won’t be frequent
I didn't love it, I guess my expectations were higher. It was mostly a lot of instrumental and very little lyrics.
Secrets
A forest might be one of my favorite tracks, but the rest of the album was kinda underwhelming. 2/5
Old school
The songs themselves are ok but the mixing is awful and I couldn’t get past that
You know, it's just kinda boring. Very atmospheric and there's some uniqueness to that but I don't see myself remembering or recognizing any track 3 minutes from now.
4/10
The second Cure album I have received on this list. That is three too many. As I said on the last one, the Cure were really popular when I was in college and I just never got into them. Although this was realesed when I was in high school, and I wasn't even aware of them then. This reminds me of why. 2
I’m not gonna be sporting eyeliner and that haircut anytime soon.
Good for smoking weed or hitting acid. Not a daily listwner
sorry m8 but i can't like the sound here
Ok, just doesn’t do anything for me
a lot of cure in a short time.
4/1001 First listen. Never intentionally played The Cure before. Played this 5 or 6 times. There isn’t a single moment from this album I remember the next day. I didn’t dislike it though.
I'm glad the Cure made music that inspired musicians that I like.
So boring. I can't even imagine being into this as a depressed teenager in 1980.
Gloomy Vibes without much variation
Not my favorite Cure album
A bit conflicted on this one. First, I think I like The Cure more when they are doing pop songs. I can appreciate this for what it is, and was impressed by the production. However, I think it fell a little flat. It may not be fair to compare it to Mask by Bauhaus, but I left that feeling surprised and delighted to how they blended Goth with Hard Rock, Reggae, and Ska. However, with this album, it was mostly what I expected from an early Cure album. Good, but it met my expectations.
I like The Cure but they were to go on to create a lot better albums than this. A Forest still sounds great, but there was nothing else memorable.
Fav songs: play for today, forest. Not the best but not the worst.
No, it's 2,140 seconds.
If it weren’t for Smith, this could function as lofi study music. Except it’s too boring. Too bad he has to sing, too.
Pathed the way for and created inspiration for so many rock groups. Good sounds.
Top track: Play For Today
This was alright. Coulda had some more lyrics
5.4/10 didn’t really enjoy it, only felt connected to maybe one or two songs, but managed to get through it in a single sitting. i did like how a lot of the songs were mainly instrumental, however. i’ve heard better from the cure for sure
Still think the cure is lame
I only like the cure when goth baddies are around with they titties out.
You know what your getting when you put on The Cure. This album is no exception. It's not bad, just not a special point of interest. I had never heard any of the songs before.
Dark and moody album. I was not that interested in the album and probably wouldn’t listen again. I felt it was a little lacking but picked up in the end. Favorite song: A Forest
Fairly boring album. The first few tracks seem like an intro to the last half if that makes sense. 80s cyberpunk movie vibes. Favorite songs: A Forest, Seventeen Seconds
Hm. First experience with the cure don’t love it. Nothing melodic to latch onto besides nice guitar tone…
Not really my speed.
meh. mellow. chill. vibes.
Inoffensive, album just passed me by - at least they evolved into a band I would listen to
Early Cure provides a guide to understanding how personal one's taste in music really is. I am enraptured by the punk freneticism of Three Imaginary Boys / Boys Don't Cry and I love the incredible melodies and beautiful song structures that start to really emerge with the Head on the Door. For me the perfect balance of all of it is Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me - THAT is Smith's 5-star album. Compared with those periods, this album, for me, is all gloom and tedium; I never want to listen to it again. But it spawned not only a musical genre, but an entire cultural movement; so it clearly resonates with a lot of people.
Goth as freak
Sounds very 80's, which isn't necessary what I listen to. Bit repetitive.
Brooding, dark, but good! Simple songwriting-centered music, compared to the kind of hair metal and electric guitar stuff that was being done at the time.
Uninspiring. Found it kind of boring.
I hate to say it I think but kinda boring
2.5
fine but not remarkable
I thought there was something wrong with the recording I was listening to when the vocals for Secrets and Three were barely audible. Apparently that's on purpose, and I hate it. Aside from that, there were a couple of decent tunes on here, but likely not an album I'm going to come back to often. 2.4/5
Not my vibe
Non è il mio album preferito dei the cure però ho apprezzato. Non penso riascolterò nulla
I’m done with The Cure. Please no more.
Jesus Christ, how many Cure albums do we need on this thing? Mondays are depressing enough already without 35 minutes of this shit, and it’s another one without any of the hits, so we are probably due for even more fucking Cure 😒
Not special
Spooky and sad. Not my favorite by The Cure
Did not like it
Can’t find the quintessential cure here 2 because missing best songs of the cure songs like: Boys don’t cry Like heaven!!!! The provided album was not :( representative!
If I was a goth girl I'd say this makes my clit twitch. I feel like omi could crank these tracks out on garage band in a day. There's some trancey vibe I like on songs like a forest but not The Cures best album.
The music was good, but I didn't like the vocals. And honestly it was quite boring overall.
Kinda felt like generic alt rock without a clear soul. Maybe it's just me though.
Bit too experimental. Liked the use of dissonance but everything else made it hard to listen to
Once again a band that I have wanted to hear more of for some years, has let me down. It was bland and boring, the only bright spark being the title track. And they left that until last. 2
Kinda boring
I don’t know, it seems like there are way too many albums by The Cure on this list. This one was fine, made for decent background music while I worked, but this is the 3rd or 4th of their albums that I can remember… apples to oranges I know, but still, 1 Clash album thus far and have we reviewed a single Ramones album yet? I digress, this one was fine, 2 stars I guess.
A two for being early influencers of lots of horrible followers . However, there are so many magnificent bands from this era that these guys rate low on the list.
Meh, just okay. Not really my jam. A couple songs I enjoyed but overall was kinda bored.
Very moody album and perhaps a little too slow for my liking but ended up really enjoying The Forest.
Somewhat enjoyable - very slow and moody. I think it'll grow on me.
decent background music
I still don't enjoy Cure, I've no idea why since I usually like moody, brooding and dark themed music. I think it's the makebelief nature of the band's goth image. To me it feels like moody teen trying to assure others he is not having a good time or something to that effect. A Forest is a nice 80's pop song, rest of the album was pretty much wasted on me.
I like The Cure, but this never got out of first gear. It only really got out of first gear when the seventh song on the album started, but then quickly decided that first gear was where it was going to stay for the rest.
A bit bored and underwhelmed with the record Can hear bits and pieces of what was to come but it was a bit one note for me
Why is THIS album on the list. There are at least 5 better Cure albums. Other than A Forest the songs are painfully average and the limited production does not make for a compelling listen in 2025. It doesn't have the immediacy of the prior album or the pop grandeur of future releases. Leaves me wanting more.
I like The Cure but not this album
Some OG sad boi music right here.
I just don't like them, wingy whiney plinky crap.
Seventeen Seconds is a fine album—it has its moments, but it doesn’t quite hit the mark as one of the greats. There are flashes of brilliance, especially in its atmosphere and mood, but those are often offset by stretches that feel flat or forgettable. It's an important step in The Cure’s evolution, laying the groundwork for what would come, but it doesn’t showcase the band at their peak. As far as “greatest albums” go? I’d say probably not. There are stronger, more complete statements elsewhere in their catalog.
Seventeen seconds is enough. I'm in the minority but I think this is uninteresting dreary boring music.
It's about as depressing as I remembered. The songs blend together. Robert Smith's voice is as memorable as it always was
After just having heard a new-to-me Cure song a couple days ago (that I loved), I was pumped to see this pop up on the generator. Unfortunately, I left feeling pretty underwhelmed with the listen as only Play for Today and A Forest give me anything to really come back to on this.
Never really been a huge fan of The Cure. Enjoy that there is a fair bit of instrumental on the album but nothing particularly grabbing or exciting me. Just a kind of steady meandering with that undeniable vocal sound. Atmospheric and spacey and can actually hear some Bloc Party vibes in this. Never really realised the influence on them before. Pretty bored by the end and ‘At Night’ felt like a fitting slog to begin to end things off and ‘Seventeen Seconds’ delivered the final blow. (2.5)
Dreary, sad music for all the dreary, sad boys and girls.
i like and respect the cure and they have a bunch of good songs, but i generally think their albums are meandering and boring.
The Cure has much better songs and records. I think I can understand this album's inclusion as a starting point to get there but not sure I would have included it. Feels very experimental and strange. Maybe key on the band's development, but not necessarily important in a larger context. 2 1=Crap that shouldn't be here 2=I didn't like it but get why it's here 3=I thought it was ok or even like it, get why it's here, but won't revisit 4=I like it, will revisit 5=This is some of the best music I've ever heard and will continue listening to it
Seems like a very experimental album. Not a lot of lyrics, and very surprising to find that the hit off of this album "The Forest" is almost five minutes long...quite a bit longer than standard radio play time for its era. This definitely has that trademark "The Cure" sound, but some of it comes across more as "noise" than "music". Not really a huge fan of this album, although I don't generally mind The Cure. This was early on for them so it's interesting to see how much they grew as they went. Not an album I'd want to listen to again, but it wasn't straight terrible.
it was okay, but i guess i really only enjoy their hits
They’re a band I should love, but I just can’t get into The Cure no matter how hard I have tried. They’ve a few singles I quite like, but I’ve got to admit they’re not a band for me: the instruments are so soaked in chorus it just sounds cheesy, and I don’t really care for Robert Smith’s singing. This album didn’t really change my mind on them, but I think I may have a better chance with some of their later albums. This was just a slog.
Kind of gothic-y, sparse. Though I like the sound, there's not a lot going on here, no real reason to return to it.
Likes: Play for today Secrets A Forest Dislikes: Three The Final Sound At Night A few songs have a terrible mix, most notably At Night 3/5
Not the best songs of cure But listeneable.
It’s chill, but I feel like it only came truly alive sporadically (notably with A Forest). It’s moments of glimmering vibes lost in a mostly forgettable album as a whole.
Not their best
Seems like they're still trying to find their sound in this one. Full of mostly emotive soundscapes.
Would I listen to it again? Maybe not. Has my opinion changed after finding out the lead singer and songwriter is an anti-natalist weirdo? Maybe. But I do actually like the instrumentation. Especially on 'A Forest'. It is very atmospheric, and I probably enjoyed the parts without vocals the most and maybe it would be better served as an instrumental piece. The bottom line is that I'm pretty sure we can embrace every piece of music and love it as if we ourselves had made it / are the one who is generating it right now as it is heard. But I haven't done that and I don't like his misanthropic gothy southern-accent-having ass.
Starts really slow and stays slow Secrets is a beautiful song haunting and meandering Not particularly exciting first half of an album Some lovely soundscapes though A forest is a great tune Not a fan of the singers voice on this album Very haunting and atmospheric throughout, but a little boring
I didn’t care for it but I think I will like their later music
Nice instrumentals but not massively memorable to me
Ehhh… they sorta had something going on, but this got a bit boring. I’m between a two and a three… I don’t really harbor much in the way of negative feelings towards this album, but there’s not really that much I liked either. I think I’ll go with two, but I can see the argument both ways. Favorite Track: A Reflection
A Forest is the only good instrumental imo. The songs with vocals are pretty decent.
I'm a snoozer, man.
SMH. This is the same story as Rod Stewart's Gasoline Alley (oddly, also his second album). Considering all the Silver, Gold, and Platinum certifications The Cure's OTHER albums have received, it's pretty stupid that THIS one was chosen as (one of?) their representative(s) on this list. If Wikipedia is to be believed, this challenge "compiles writings and information on albums chosen by a panel of music critics to be the most important, influential, and best in popular music between the 1950s and the 2010s." If that's so, then the selection of this album, like Gasoline Alley from Stewart's library, is a tone-deaf blunder by the admin. I'd give this entry a 1 in protest, too, but I actually do own this album and like The Cure too much to fully penalize them for the failure of others.
Veel instrumentaal, beetje zeurderig
I'm a Cure fan but this one is not a fave
Pretty boring
I like a lot of Cure songs. Three Imaginary Boys is an incredible album. I really tried to get into Seventeen Seconds but it just kind of faded into the background. I actually listened to this album 3x without realizing it was replaying. It was just like....nothing.
Tired of singing? Just let the gloomy instrumentals drone on.
Not my cup of tea
One of those albums that serve as a conveyor belt with seemingly the same songs, saved by some slick guitar riffs. Favorite Track: "Three"(which isn't track three).
This wasn't bad, but it wasn't good. There are great foundations of songs here, but they felt very stagnant for much of them. Like....please develop into something. Some of the songs sounded more like soundscapes than anything. Liked Songs: "Play For Today" , "A Forest" , "M"
Sounded pretty generic to me
Tried to get into the Cure back in the day and couldn't.... Tried this..and still don't get it. Pass
[5/10]
Favorites: In Your House, A Forest, M
A somewhat dark, brooding, gothic post-punk album. Lots of ambience and soundscapes, but feels more simple and shallow compared to the paradoxically foreboding warmth that they develop on later albums (say, Disintegration). Nor are the songs strong or catchy enough to create ear worms like their poppier efforts. Overall this is ok - it shows where The Cure is headed and was perhaps a still novel sound at release, but it doesn’t capture the enveloping sounds and memorable melodies that this band grew to be known for. In essence, it just doesn’t stand the test of time when you know what else The Cure are capable of achieving.
Not bad but definitely boring
Out on the vocals, in on the guitar. Feels more like car music than stationary
This didn't cure shit.
Ok. Wouldn’t listen to again
Pa ono, okej su mi oni inače, ali ovaj album me ne impresionira previše. Dosadnjikav je dosta. 2/5, 3/10
Moody and cool, but it didn’t pull me in. I think the Cure has better stuff - A Forest is great, though.
They're just so DULL. Three, The Final Sound and A Forest were cool though. Aka the ones where he is not/barely singing. In fact the sound in general in the ones after those are good - it would have made a good atmospheric like trance album.
Very instrumental
Favorite tracks: Play for Today In Your House Then some experimental noises and some boring tracks.
Not their best.
These songs play over 'B roll' of a city in the opening shots of a movie. You think it's groovy and you like the riff, then it fades out when the main character is introduced. It turns out that's a good thing.
I thought I really liked the cure but I guess I only like the hits
Sorry, this really bored me…
Three was absolutely wasted on The Cure. Somebody give that song to Three 6 Mafia immediately and let them do it justice.
Spooky tbh
It was fine but nothing super memorable
I like the actual music but not a fan of the singer's voice.
Interesting musically, particularly the first part of the album. I feel like R.E.M.'s Murmur is sort of a spiritual cousin, but whereas that album feels lush and inspired, this one feels like an experiment. The vocals are too far away, the drums too teched up almost sounding like a drum machine. I like some darkness, but the mood here is intense.
Not a huge fan of The Cure outside of some of their mainstream hits. Very dark and moody, and frankly at this point of my life I don't need that sort of thing. However, there was a time when I would have found that appealing. I have never understood the ethereal instrumentals though.
:(
- unaufgeregte Platte, ganz entspannt immerhin 2,25-2,5/5
Zzzzzzzzz 3/10
A promising start which dwindles and fades to eventual boredom.
2/5 Some odd songs on this one. Didn't really find enjoyment from listening. Can't say i have listened a lot to Cure, but i do recall them having better songs than this.
I was hoping this would be better.. I really like some Cure but this one didn’t do anything for me really
Not my style really, no disrespect to the Cure
The more of the Cure I listen to the less I like them
eh
The cure isn't a bad that I have liked a lot before. Its not that I dislike anything in particular about them its more that I don't get the appeal and their songs don't stick with me. While I haven't listened to an entire album like I did today my opinion is still the same. I cant quite put my finger on it but I just don't vibe with this music at all.
Ug. It’s the Cure.
+ Early look into the Robert Smith's skill into composing an interesting album + Favorite Song: A Forest - Bland production fights the interesting composition - No real standout tracks -/+ The Cure is making better music 40 years later
The best the Cure ever did. And that's a shame.
Some early music from the Cure. They have a distinctive style even in this early album. However, this was quite mundane and unexciting for me. Not something I’d listen to over and over.
The instrumentals were good, but I was expecting more from the Robert Smith.
Goths! I forgot all about goths. Enjoyed the title track.
Doesn’t rock. Next
Another band that im glad the list surfaces, but I just dont appreciate (yet). I dig some of The Cures hits, so im sure my interest is there, but hardly any of Seventeen Seconds stuck with me. Maybe Secrets and In Your House (genuinely didnt like A Forest) were my only tracks I liked and not merely tolerated From reading the album wiki, I discovered that this was more or less the Cure’s sound defining album with a lot of band member changes happening beforehand. So I guess thats cool to have the context.
Very spooky and moody. It was ok, but I think I'd have to be in a specific mood to listen to it again.
Not bad, not great
A bit to spacey for me.
Alright but not great
Dit had evengoed een single'ke van A Forest kunnen zijn. De rest van de nummers? Meh. The Cure heeft maar één echt goed album imo, en dit is 'em niet. A Forest krijgt een 5.0, het album? Een magere 2.4, sorry.
transitional album that didn't quite work for me. left me wondering why it was included on this list. also, the mix was weird, with the vocals obnoxiously low.
Ight
1. reflection - 1.5 2. play - 1.5 3. zecretz - 1.5 4. houze - 1.5 5. three - 1 6. zound - 0 7. forezt - 2 8. m - 1 9. night - 1.5 10. zecondz - 1
Didn't really hit for me. Wasn't necessarily bad, but it was a little repetitive and samey. Not for me.
Mediocre, bot terrible but not really my cup of tea. Just doesn't jobe well and kind of monotonous.
imersivo porém entediante (desculpa)
Never listened to The Cure before but based on this I don't have a strong desire to listen to more of their work.
This was super boring. The album flew by and there weren't any distinguishable songs. Boo. 2/5
Not a fan. The music is so subdued, I don't feel a connection to it. I don't find the lyrics anything special either.
Beetje daai
It was okay. Best song was "A Forest" but Carpathian Forest does it better.
I didn’t really care for this album. A Forest and M I enjoyed but won’t revisiting this album much.
I like quite a bit of the Cure but this was a bit dull
Forgettable.
I like the Cure but this record is kinda boring and repetitive. Props for being the Cure though.
'Strangers / Nobody knows we love' (from 'Secrets') is a moving summary of this album's evocation of loneliness. But that triumph doesn't persist. It's not that it's too dark - it's that the darkness is uninteresting and finally w/o the quality of what makes dejected art a buoy for a suffering mind and body. The storytelling is weak, the production feeble. Maybe their other records are more developed, but this stagnates w/ no howl - not for me.
i normally really love the cure but this is jsut a little too alternative/experimental for my taste
wish it was only seventeen seconds long. this is an album where every song feels like it should be builiding to a crescendo that never happens. its good that its short because it's quite frustrating at the same time...
boring
Early goth/alt. Liked “a forest”. 2.5
All the same sound.
Good band, songs.
Another Radiohead like experience. I see the album and get excited. "Oh, I've listened to plenty of this band, this will be fun to listen to a whole album." Then the listening experience: "ohhh... oh... this isn't so much music as ambient noise to play quietly in the background when you just need something to ignore. "
I grew up with parents that loved The Cure. I got excited when I saw we had a The Cure album today and was looking forward to it. I listened to a The Cure a lot but I think it was mostly greatest hits. Honestly I was quite bored and unimpressed with this one and I was kind of confused why it made it on the list. Lots of repetition but with very simple riffs and drumming. If you're going to be repetitive you need more interesting things going on and more layers.
Seventeen seconds felt like 17 hours of a record failing to pique my interest. Between the boring vocals and droning instrumentals, this record felt like it was going nowhere. Giving it a 2-star rating because I don’t think it’s bad, like my other 1-star ratings, it’s just boring. Favorite track: Play For Today
I have one Cure album in the collection, 'disintegration'. Looking at the tracklist, I only know 'A Forest' and it's a brilliant tune, so looking forward to hearing the rest. ......... One thing I've always liked about Cure recordings is the depth. Smith's vocals are right in your ear but other parts of the track sound like they're a million miles away. It's very moody and sparse which I have to be in the mood for. Enjoyed 'Play for Today' and 'A Forest'... much of the rest is similar in tone and atmosphere but not being added to the 'liked songs' playlist. I reckon if I'd found this when I was 13 or 14, I could have gotten very into it and my life would have been different.
Not really my kind of thing.
Kinda boring but oddly nice sounding album. Good spooky season fall music
