Reviews (page 12 of 14)

a few songs I liked

Unexceptional grunge whining from Kurt being backpacked by Dave Grohl's intense and talented drumming.

I was never a huge Nirvana fan. This album is fine. It reminds me of high school. No complaints, but I honestly prefer Nevermind over this.

Decent but they've never been my cup of tea.

Cobain’s vocals are a hit or miss for me. Some good songs on here, but mostly I just felt meh about it. Fav tracks: Pennyroyal Tea, Rape Me

I like Nirvana, but I'm not as angry as I used to be in my youth, so songs like Scentless Apprentice are not appealing anymore. This album contains so many hits though that I still like - so I was surprised to learn as I went through it that I didn't actually love the album as much as I used to, though I still respect it. RIP Kurt.

I always forget this album comes after Nevermind. It sounds a lot rougher and less refined than Nevermind, but it is still decent. Would have to listen to it more to get into.

A little too screechy for me. I like the ones that made it on the radio.

I want to like Nirvana, I really do, but they make it so hard. They've got a few good bops but then Kurt Cobain just yells at me for a while

Nirvana is not my type of music. Some were good, especially Heart-Shaped Box, but the majority didn't click

A bit too noisy (not volume-wise) for me.

it’s sad and awkward to watch this poor troubled man try so hard to be something he is not

Some of these are unlistenable and some are great. Rating 3.

This albums is pretty decent I probably don't like it as much as I should do. The highlights are All Apologies, Pennyroyal Tea, Heart-shaped Box. The louder moments on the album aren't as enjoyable I'm between a 3 and a 4, I will decide in the morning

Difficult to listen to, mix of standard rock/punk tracks and surrounded by under-baked and tired screaming rants.

My least favorite nirvana album.

Pretty good but also a bit meh

Never been the biggest Nirvana fan - and this album is somewhat typical of my listening relationship with them; starts out strong, wondering why I don't listen to them more often, and really understanding why they have so many plaudits... the singles from this album were expertly gauged and really are the standouts and show a breadth of musicality and growth already escaping the catch-all 'grunge' label. Butttttttt, about 3/4's of the way through I'm getting a little restless and it's getting a bit samey/shouty (Oh christ, I'm aging). Maybe should have dedicated a listen when driving not working - but that's what I've got from this listen-through.

You can tell cobain is about done with it all. Scentless apprentice - too much screaming 3/10 Heart shaped box banger - 8/10 Rape me - Iconic 9/10 Frances Farmer - Nirvana-y kinda boring 6/10 Dumb - Fav so far 9.5/10 Very Ape - Mid 5/10

Just sounds like a lot of Nirvana in quick succession

Yeah it was good, I liked some of the songs but it was too long for me personally

As a child of the 90s, Nirvana is in my wheelhouse, but I think this is the first time I’ve listened to In Utero end to end. It’s… fine?

Pennyroyal Tea stands out. And All Apologies

Quite boring. Some okay songs like Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies. Pretty much what you expect from Nirvana. 3/5

Not a fan of the occasional screaming and lyric choices, but has a really great sound most of the time. Love the use of “True Stereo” when I threw the headphones!

Solid 3. Very good if you’re in the mood for grunge.

I like the singles from this album but not a lot else.

Kinda grating on the ears, but I did like some songs without the screaming and screeching analog whistles

Intense album, not a day for me to deeply appreciate grunge, hardcore but not in the right way for me 3/5

Can really hear the push back form the band to the fame they garnered from "Nevermind". The album is a mix of really polished tunes and some real rough cuts, especially the songs that were not destined for radio. Overall really enjoyed it. 3.75/5 Would listen to most of it again.

There is a lot to uncover that I can't simply do in one hearing of the album. There is a lot of emotion conveyed through these songs, and the lyrics are powerful upon first hearing. As I listen to this more than once and look up the lyrics I sense a few more nuances and meaning behind the lyrics. There is a lot of mention about milk, iron, and suicide

Lyrically a better album then their other ones. I find musically, it lacks what their first two albums had.

Oooh these guys peaked. Nevermind is just so fucking good the only way was down. Yeah, it’s grungy, and punky and messy - which really isn’t my thing but also half the tracks on here are just pretty forgettable.

A bit abrasive for me

I remember when this album came out and I was hugely disappointed when I first listened it. 30 years later, it's a bit better but far from perfect. The bookend tracks are the best songs on the album but you can tell Kurt Cobain wasn't going to be long for this planet. Steve Albini's production is hit and miss which is surprising. (Speaking of Albini, why isn't his band Shellac in the book? They're fantastic. Never mind.)

Some good tracks but it's A LOT to handle.

Still not a Nirvana guy, probably will never be, but I respect that they follow up their big breakthrough in Nevermind with something as relatively uncommercial as this. Nothing on here has the same kind of hooks as Teen Spirit or “Come As You Are” (even though “Rape Me” rips off the former’s riff), so I can see why it was a disappointment at the time. And I do admire Steve Albini’s work. C

Through the years I keep being told how great Nirvana is/was and I continue to have a hard time listening to their stuff. Maybe it's the lead singers whining approach to singing. It works on a number of songs, but just wears on me. Maybe it's the fact the most talented member is the drummer. Whatever the reason, Nirvana never reach that upper level of listening pleasure for me. I admit there is number of song I consider to be good, Heart Shaped Box, Rape Me and Dumb. But to be honest, you won't find any of these on my Spotify. Even one of me personal favorites, All Apologies, no Spotify. But, great tune. Songs that surprised me were Milk It and Radio Friendly Unit Shifter. Again, just OK to me. A while back, I listened to their first album, Bleach. That album is their best album, imo. More in your face, punkish and the singer doesn't seem to cry like a lil bitch. Good album. Drums were outstanding. I enjoyed my listens, but these guys are no Sister Sledge. Thankfully this was their last album and then the world was introduced to the greatest talent in this band. I am going with a 3.5. Not quite Sister Sledge, but pretty good. 3.5

albini albumen album

Some song were a bit too punk for me but those that weren’t were brilliant and really showed what Cobain can do.

Favorite tracks: Dumb, Pennyroyal Tea, Tourette's, All Apologies Favorite lyrics: "I tried hard to have a father but instead I had a dad"

Liked a couple of tracks but I don't have enough angst to connect with it

Not a huge Nirvana fan. This album had some good and some bad stuff, so 3/5.

Bit too much in some points for me, and in multiple cases prefer the mtv unplugged version. Despite the poeticism of the lyrics (i.e. in rape me, milk it), this gets a 3.

This is a very good album. But Nirvana just never hits quite the same again.

Was nice to see the lyrics, never really knew many of the words. Very angsty to hear, a bit triggering in places. Can see a lot of the reasons behind his early demise. Was very talented

Didn't like The Pixies and not a fan of Nirvana. some tracks were alright.

Blandat intryck.

I love Heart-Shaped Box, it is a great song, but honestly the rest of the album wasn't as good. Bit of a dud, really.

I can't stop thinking of how many other bands from the era don't get the attention they should just because their lead singer didn't die.

Very familiar with the four radio singles but never the full album. the remaining songs seemed to blur together for me but I would be willing to give it a full run-through again in the future.

I have mixed feelings about this album. At times, it seems like a stroke of genius, but at other times, it becomes unbearably repetitive. I believe that in the end, Nirvana's contribution works more as a cultural movement than as a musical contribution, as it ultimately ends up being like a kind of Punk 2.0

It was okay. Tourettes is a terrible song but All Apologies is a strong ending that makes up for it.

Uf.

Three feels a bit generous but there are a few really good tracks.

Not bad, has the hits but also makes you realize how hits can make a band so great

I quite enjoyed this without it necessarily being something I'd listen to time and time again. I suspect I might prefer the slightly more accessible stuff they ended up with, but this was still quite interesting to listen to.

I like Nirvana.

Interesting, I think nevermind is better l, but this has some really good bits, still struggled at times

I’m not a huge Nirvana fan, they kinda passed me by. However I did quite enjoy this album. Once again, not enough to make me want to listen to more particularly.

I expected a lot from this (told Maggie this would be a 5), then realized I enjoyed this much more as a kid than I do now

not as good as i remember tbh. kinda disappointed with this one

Some classics here, intermingled with less successful shouty numbers which spoil the overall album a bit for me. 3.5 stars.

A few weak links, but otherwise a really good album from an essential band

overall pretty good, but there are some songs i didn't really like

Really only found myself connecting with the radio/popular tracks on the album. Heart Shaped Box, Rape Me, and All Apologies were the most memorable, and they still hold up.

A few good songs on this album. I was never a massive Nirvana fan but I enjoyed listening to this other than maybe 2 or 3 songs.

Huh, I don't know what to think. I feel like I should like this more than I did. Ps. I had no idea Dave Grohl was the drummer for the last four years of Nirvana. Also, Sonic Youth was friends with them and recommended a new record label when they blew up.

I liked this better than the grunge album I got yesterday (Superunknown), so yay!

I don't really grunge sw songs were good

3 I don’t mind listening but it’s my fav

Not their best work.

1. Serve the servants 5/10 2. Scentless apprentice. I liked the guitar. Not anything else. 5/10 3. Heart-Shaped Box. I recognised parts of this one, not sure from where though. I liked the first minute and then he started yelling and I didn’t like it as much. Still decent 7/10 4. Rape Me - Despite the uncomfortable title, this is my favourite on the album so far. 8/10 5. Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge - 5/10 6. Dumb - 5/10. Just very mediocre 7. Very Ape - 5/10 8. Milk It - 5/10 9. Pennyroyal Tea - My favourite on the album overall. 8/10 10. Radio Friendly Unit Shifter - 6/10 11. Tourette’s - 5/10 12. All Apologies - 6/10 I find some of Cobain’s vocals in this to be incredibly grating. I’m not anti-yell or anti-screaming in songs (I love riot grrl and punk music) but… his version of that just didn’t work for me. When he was singing at a quieter calmer tone I enjoyed it a lot more. This will probably bug some people, but I guess I just don’t get the whole Nirvana thing. I find the many 5 star reviews to be somewhat confounding, though I feel the same about the 1 star reviews. 2.5/5, rounded up to 3.

Not really overrated because there are some gems of melodic catchy ‘pop’ songs amongst the hardcore punk screaming. Nirvana and Cobain were genuinely talented and stratospheric sales warrant this album in the list even if it’s not ultimately my taste.

A couple of really classic songs and some I just don't get into so much. I really like Nevermind - like everyone did. This one is different. For me, just a 3/5.

had some bangers but also had a lot of noise. 3.

After Nevermind, I found this a huge disappointment. Nearly 30 years after it's release, I still do.

This is the second STUDIO album we have gotten from Nirvana on this list. Nevermind is incredible, and this album struggles to even compare to that one. I found myself skipping a few songs and noticing them all kind of mesh together. Heart Shape Box certainly felt familiar from a movie or something, and I actually did like All Apologies, but the rest didn't really grab me.

Number three from Nirvana I believe. It's certainly no Nevermind, but few albums are. It's got "Heart Shaped Box," which is a favorite of mine, and a couple other tracks I dig. Aside from those few, it lacks the bite that Nevermind has. I still think it's a good album, but their prior peak set the bar impossibly high for me. I would give this the edge over the MTV live album though. Favorite tracks: Heart-Shaped Box, Rape Me, All Apologies. Album art: Kinda disgusting, innit? An angel that's been skinned. I've seen it plenty of times before but today is the first time I'm really SEEING it. I don't love it but it's memorable and gets the job done. 3.5/5

Second to Never Mind. Still great!

Another Nirvana album after "Nevermind", which wasn't my favourite already. It's the first time I'm listening to "In Utero" and I still dont understand the phenomenon of this band. There is so many other grunge bands, that had a better career, higher highs and not so low lows. Nevertheless, Nirvana has some good songs, like "Heart-shaped Box" or "Rape Me", but as a whole record, it's rather anonymous and boring. What I like about Alice in Chains, or Pearl Jam, or even Soundgarden is that they put some real emotions into their songs, whereas I don't really feel it with Nirvana. Album to forget.

While Nirvana was the face of the grunge movement, their music became their undoing. Probably the best of their three studio albums still fails to really inspire.

I bought this album on CD when it was released. Was a little disappointed with it back in the day, but it's a very good album. Really enjoy it. Not sure I've listened to it since KC joined that club. Some disturbing sounds though, like: 02 Scentless Apprentice 08 Milk It 11 Tourette's Love the riff in Scentless Apprentice Tracks I remember well: 03 Heart-Shaped Box 04 Rape Me 06 Dumb 07 Very Ape 09 Pennyroyal Tea 12 All Apologies

Heard it before?: Yes Enjoy it?: Yeah I do but I think I’m on my own when I say I find Kurt lyrically in some aspects quite dry/boring when he has the over the top droning of his vocals where you can’t make out what he is saying. I think he sounds far better when he sings clearly which he doesn’t do much on this Favourite song: Track 6 - Dumb

mid utero nirvana mid sorry seattle

Definitely appreciate the hits from this album but not a fan of the rest.

Folk hade det för bra på 90talet

han skriker ju bara :(

I think Nirvana are overrated but this is still a good album

Best Song: Heart-Shaped Box. After two directionless opening tracks, finally we have one that channels Nirvana's interpretation of angst into an angry little ditty worth listening to. Worst Song: Rape Me. Musically it's alright, but that absolute edgelord choice to just shout "rape me" over and over really undermines my desire to ever listen to this track. Overall: Overall a much less focused project than "Nevermind". A lot of just scattered screaming that never feels all that cohesive or purposeful, with a few solid tracks interspersed throughout.

I had an advance tape of this in summer '93 and could only get through it once. Sounds great but the songs aren't really there, and so much whining about being a successful rock star. If only Albini had "recorded" Nevermind..

Unexpectedly metal 3

Just ok

Some good songs but could not handle the yelling rough sounds

Grunge

Its Ok, but just makes me want to listen to Pixies instead.

i'll start this review by saying i absolutely recognize the significance and influence nirvana had and still has. i agree in utero should be on this albums list! i'm just not a huge fan of their music. upon listening to this album, i've realized a lot of it has to do with kurt cobain's voice. in many songs, i couldn't hear many of his lyrics because his voice was so much softer than the music! that's my personal preference and that was his choice to sing that way. and i didn't care very much for when he screamed instead of sang. ah, i suppose that's grunge for you. the drums by dave grohl were just excellent. he completely controlled the songs via drums. and cobain's guitar could be very powerful. in some parts of the album, nirvana even edged close to heavy rock/metal. the lyrics were authentic and real. so this to say, i grew in my respect for nirvana, i did find a song i enjoyed, and i learned more about nirvana, but. i think a 3 is the best i can do.

Not a big fan

I've tried to get into Nirvana but it's never really clicked. This album was just okay for me.

The obvious bit where Nirvana were still trying to cram Punk influence in their songs right next to finding the sound that made them go world famous. Some really good tracks, even the non-singles.

not the type of music i would listen to, but i like it, is good :)

Not my favorite style

Ca va, kwas er ni veu in de stemming denk

Some deeper cuts on this album that I don’t care for but the hits are great

Outside of the singles that I already knew, I didn’t really care for the rest of the songs.

This is probably like every Nirvana superfan's favorite Nirvana album, but as a casual Nirvana listener I found it immature and annoying. Some good tracks in there (especially Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies) help balance the keel to an even 3, but the mindless screaming of "Scentless Apprentice" and the horrible bullshit that is "Rape Me" really tried my patience.

Not my favorite of theirs but still pretty good.

A few good songs but nothing to write home about. Solid three stars.

I liked it, rated lower because it’s not my usual or my favourite but it was good.

In my mind, nothing defines grunge like "Nevermind", and nothing Nirvana did touches that masterpiece. However, this album is better, more melodic—despite having a dirtier sound—than I remembered. It’s got some really catchy tunes. The back and forth between acoustic and electric bits highlights how effortlessly the band can switch from delicacy to harshness in quick changes.

Always with rock and grunge, my ears don't find the filled in noise of drums and other instruments very pleasant. It's just very loud. Scentless Apprentice was going alright, but the screaming really was not it. I couldn't listen to it with my earbuds as it was going to make my head hurt. I could identify some melodies that I did like. It's still not something that my ears find pleasant. Highlights: Heart-Shaped Box

I found this a very interesting album. The songs I liked I really liked, and the songs I didn't like, I really didn't like. I seem to recall that when this album came out, people said it was rougher than Nevermind, and I found a few tracks really hard to listen to. "Heart-Shaped Box" and "All Apologies" are great, classic songs, though, and I am fond of "Dumb."

3rd June 2022 Listened on the Saturday while cleaning / cooking breakfast. Long jubilee weekend, Friday was out walking with Seb, Saturday chilled one Sunday cleaning and packing! 90s grunge at its finest. Loud, hard but tender.

Pretty solid, Enjoyed most of the songs. Best song: Heart shaped Box

Has some bangers but also some misses in my opinion. Hard to beat Nevermind.

Too much screaming, not enough music. And I do happen to enjoy grunge. While conceptually In Utero is really rather neat, it's execution leaves a lot to be desired - the songs get repetetive, the vocals appear sub-par, and the conherency and consitency just isn't there. Some tracks hold their own, but mostly the vocals aither overshadow or dissapear under the backing tracks. That said, it's still not outright unpleasant to listen to. Simply average.

Sad and angry, possibly after a heart break. Classic nirvana

Mostly good. 3/5

Yeah, so, I never really saw that Nirvana was the transformational band that they get credit for. Transformational, certainly, just not as much as they've been given credit for. Personally, I felt that Alice In Chains should've been the band that got the credit for ending hair metal and ushering in flannel. I suppose they just didn't have the pop radio appeal that Nirvana had. I mean, Facelift came out a year earlier than Nevermind. Additionally, I think Nevermind was the more groundbreaking album anyway. In Utero has some great songs, it just wasn't groundbreaking or transformational in my opinion.

Ei paras Nirvana. Ihan jees kyllä. Ei ehi kirjottaa pitkii sepustuksii. Kassu löytyy hyllyst joten ihan tuttua kauraa 3/5

OK. I am not going to get much love for this review ... but this album is just too much noise. Though I do love all "All Apologies", and there are some really big hits on this album, I would be quite happy living the rest of my life never hearing this again. C-

couple classics

Rating system (Most of these albums are shoo-in 5-star albums for anyone “into” the genre they represent, my system is trying to avoid all 5-star reviews and break them down to represent my tastes. This is subjective and supposed to be fun, and some of these are snap judgements/hot takes after listening to an album once.): * Why is this even on here/DNF ** Album with artistic merit, but not my jam. Will probably not listen to again without prompting. ***Solid album, would listen to again. Some significant flaws for me to fully enjoy as a “full album.” Most albums will be in this category, as it’s the legit average. ****Almost flawless album, only one misstep in tracklisting or small engineering quibbles. *****Flawless album, one of my favorites, owning is required. Day 4: It’s been a minute since listening to something so unabashedly alienating. So much has been said about this album (and frankly, most of the stuff on this list) but it’s true that this gains so much more relevance in light of everything that happened after its release. Without the unaliving of Cobain, this would have been seen in a larger body of work as perhaps growing pains, or a third album “sophomore slump”. I know it’s more similar to their earlier/live work, but I can also see how it would be disappointing to someone expecting the relative polish of Nevermind. And I know from experience, since this was released when I was in high school, and folks just didn’t grok it the way they did with the previous album (though that number was not zero, obviously. Perhaps more of the population resonated with it in my HS, as I went to school in a semi-rural PNW town). I like loud and noisy and hard albums, but as I’ve gotten older, have definitely not been putting this kind of stuff on my daily listening rotation. I wasn’t really into this when it came out either, but it was a melancholy reminder of growing up in the ‘90s.

Great album, but not Nirvana's best album. Hard to beat Nevermind though.

Some good songs mixed in with some poor ones

Some great tracks on here, I like the grungy guitar sound and interesting chord progressions. In my opinion there aren't as many standout tracks as in their previous album though, there are quite a few forgettable moments

A classic (for my age group lol). I remember really not liking Nirvana when they first got big because their sound was different and, in all my elementary-school-aged wisdom, it bugged me. Came back to them recently after "Lithium" got picked as the Seattle Kraken hockey team goal song. I haven't listened to this whole album though, so I liked hearing both some familiar and some new-to-me songs on this one today.

Bueno!.. pero definitivamente no logro su sonido. Me quedo con las típicas.. Heart shaped box All apologies

Not my favourite Nirvana album

Bit of a mixed bag for me but I liked it

Not as good as I remember

Fínt grunge.

I already liked some songs from this album, namely Heart-Shaped Box and All Apologies, but I also discovered I liked dumb. Honorable mention to Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle and, a little bit, knocked down in part by its title, Rape Me. Why call something that? Edgy I guess? Meh. Multiple songs were way too screamy, so it's sort of a 2.5, but that's rounded up to a 3 here I think.

I appreciate the importance of Nirvana but this album just doesn't work for me.

Pretty good album. It has some of the classic Nirvana songs and the others were hit or miss but still some really good ones in there. 6/10

Is had moments but sounds like a pale version of some of their hits.

I used to listen to this album a lot when I was a teenager, but going back to it I don't think it has aged particularly well. Heart shaped box is still a great song, pennyroyal tea and rape me have a lot of energy to them, but the album overall seems to lack a certain something. As with a lot of my 3 stars, I'd go back for a song or two but probably wouldn't listen to the whole thing with any kind of regularity.

I'm conflicted by this album, but underpinning and riding above all musical opinions, is the feeling of loss. What could this band have done if Kurt had been able to get well and stay healthy? I see the album as a conflicted stream of conciousness. You only need to hear the first two tracks back-to-back to get a sense of what I mean. Tracks like "Heart-Shaped Box", "Dumb", "Pennyroyal Tea" and "All Apologies" playoff as near ballads. Others like "Scentless Apprentie", "Milk It" and "Tourette's" explode and writhe. Throughout it all though, I just can't shake the sense that this album is primarily a band that is working through its understanding of itself. We, the listeners, are left with unresolved emotions and lingering questions.

Ultimately a bit disappointing, half the songs were really raw and mainly screaming, the other half of the songs were decent but didn't compare to Nevermind's songs

Teenage angst has paid off well (on Nevermind) Now I'm bored and old

Rating 6.3/10 Mostly only enjoyed Heart-Shaped Box. The rest of the songs were not my jam, mostly consisting of grungy guitars and Kurt Cobain screaming with a bit too much distortion.

I think I just don’t get it

Probably need to listen to this again

It was OK

oh man, my music tastes have really evolved since I was a teenager. I mean it's not terrible but I couldn't finish the album

Uhm.... no

This album did not really grab me, despite a few good moments.

2 great songs. Few are too busy, yelling.

3/5 Not really interesting

Not as good as i remember

Some great ones and some strange in between.

Pidin kokonaisuudesta

One could call this album the epitome of grunge music or it could simply be known as alternative rock. Either way, Nirvana went out with a bang with this album and it rocks! Personally it's not my type of music, but I respect the work of the artists.

Too heavy for my liking but I can appreciate the craft. Surprised by how many of these I knew despite never actively listening to a Nirvana album. Must be from various ChindoPedigree bashes over the years.

Nostalgic but didn't enjoy as much as I expected.

A few good songs Nirvana is overrated imo, so it's hard not to rate this harshly

He sent an album I owned them listen to a lot. This is it. It’s interesting in that well it’s a bit of a reversal of the direction the band was going. They seem to never mind was a little more user-friendly for the General population. Definitely not pop but more user friendly. In neutral reverse the trend and got back to the grunge. They recall that a lot of stores required this CD not to be publicly displayed because the words “rape me “Ronit. Not sure if the Justin Bieber loving authorities we’re grouping the grunge guys with the skinheads and I thought that the song was endorsing glorify and rape. The words make it obvious that that wasn’t the case. I can’t think of better words to show how a victim feels than the words “I love to lick your open sore. I just can’t forget I can’t imagine ever forgetting those words. Nirvana most had the originality to continue to be listenable and.

At one time, I played the grooves off of this album... upon re-listening, I'm not sure it stands up to the passage of time. Maybe it's because the guitars are mixed too loud, or maybe I have become a geezer.

I enjoyed it, but not as much as their live album. ***

Grunge isn't really my thing. They had a few decent songs tho,

In utero is a Latin term literally meaning "in the womb". In biology, the phrase describes the state of an embryo or fetus. In legal contexts, the phrase is used to refer to unborn children. Under common law, unborn children are still considered to exist for property transfer purposes. I give this album three properties! (just land, no structures)

not my favorite Nirvana album

The good songs are very good, but nothing I would return to that often.

5. Seems like a fairly good Nirvana album, but can't say I love Nirvana.

Medium Nirvana-fan. Bedre Nirvana-album, imo: Unplugged-albumet, Nevermind. +: Very Ape, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, All Apologies -: Rape Me, Frances Farmer Will (...).

Me agota el grunge.

Not a huge fan of Nirvana, but not a terrible album. Probably won’t go back to it, but there were some good tracks on it Favorite Track(s): “Heart-Shaped Box” and “All Apologies”

Yep, sounds like a Nirvana album.

I just realized I do not like Nirvana that much >_<

again, just okay

Liked the songwriting on Nevermind better overall.

I like Nirvana, but never felt like they were the second coming as so many do. It's a good album. 3 stars.

Still feels a bit overrated but solidly done.

Definitely has nothing on Nevermind, but decent songs throughout. I'm not a huge fan but it's not bad.

Good but a little too angsty heh

Grungy and entertaining, though not exactly why I typically choose to listen to

This is all a bit much isn't it. But I suppose there are three bangers on it.

Not a big fan of this album. A little too gritty and messy for me. On re-listen it is better than I remember, but I wouldn't give it many plays

3-stars in you're not into Grunge, 5-stars if you are.

some classics, very gritty and rough. heavy distortion at times, not bad, not for me. Just give me the hits off the album

More shouty than I recall but less tuneful as well. Like the production/sound.

helt okej sound, känns såklart klassiskt. men inget som får mig att bli go i benen va.

I thought it was pretty cool

Alright, but kinda boring. Fun to hear the influences, but I can't really see myself going back much.

Previously known. As a whole it didn't hold up for me. The ones I liked I prefer from Unplugged.

Don't believe the hype. Just an angry, shouty man.

Not my cup of tea...

So I had only heard the singles from this album before today. Now that I've heard the whole thing, I still don't like Nirvana. Unlike most people my age (apparently), their combination of heavy guitars, screaming, and mumbled rage never moved me. One thing impressed me here -- the way they chose to follow up the multi-platinum arena-packing success of Nevermind: even heavier guitars, frayed sounds, darker lyrics. Not a whiff of an attempt to recruit more fans. That's probably the best way they could have done it, and I'll tip my hat to that.

Gen X has heretofore largely avoided much of the intergenerational brawl. I would rectify this and submit to the cultural powers that be that Gen X's grandest sin to its successors and predecessors is giving rise to and supporting the grunge genre, with a special focus on holding Nirvana as the 90's crowning achievement. Most of the above is a joke, save my being perplexed at Nirvana's longevity. The majority of their catalog is mediocre with a few standout songs, and this album is no exception. I have to return to the rather uncharitable but absolutely true view that Nirvana gained an enormous amount of prestige from Cobain's tragic and mysterious early death. That death premium will do wonders for a promising early career, whether you be Nirvana, Amy Winehouse, or Buddy Holly. You can have established yourself as a world class talent — or simply shown an impressive early hand — and live many lifetimes after that one death. That said, you do need to have a baseline of exceptional skill or X factor to get that premium. And Nirvana does have some genuinely good talent behind it. There are some great riffs, some great melodies, some novel and interesting arrangements here. The problem I find is that they rarely come together at the same time, and the rest of any given song can be a rough and unenjoyable experience. The moments when Nirvana is firing on all cylinders nearly vindicates their legendary status, but those moments are too few to make this a great listen the whole way through. I feel that there is this silent agreement to factor in all the potential songs that never were when you listen to an artist that departed too soon. An impressive song becomes all the more earth shattering because you model their growth in your head and the theoretical returns are mind boggling. But when I listen to this music without factoring in what could have been, I find it hard to enjoy save for a few minutes.

there were a couple songs i could sit through. mostly i skipped

It started a genre, but is very dated. The sound is not timeless other than the few "radio worthy" songs.

As far as grunge music goes, this one is pretty weak. Surely there has to be better more important albums than this?

OK honestly, can barely finish listening. It's Nirvana. It's great for what it is but it isn't for me. This is the follow-up to Nevermind and it's not as good. Heart Shaped Box is the best song, but I've always found the concept of the song to be confusing. This album sounds noisier (in a bad way) and less....real? than Nevermind does. Also, the song 'Rape Me' is a perennial track-to-avoid. Next.

most of the time I can't tell what Kurt Cobain is saying but it's not unlistenable, good for when I want something non-distracting on in the background fave track: Pennyroyal Tea least fave track: Dumb death rating: 5/10, don't think I'd miss this album but at least now I'm educated on something by Nirvana that isn't SLTS

Never really got what all the fuss was about

Really did not enjoy. This type of music is not for me and I can’t even see the appeal.

A continuer d’écouter

Likely not in the mood for this today/this morning. She bangs but she bangs a little too hard today

Why is this one deemed the classic??

not their best

>the first album they gave me was a fucking nirvana album >i never really like nirvana lyrics, they often overuse the catchphrase or just repeatedly says the title of the songs >regardless, the guitar does slaps, the drum often not overused which is perfect >they tried too hard to be wacky lot of the time >i like when Kurt scream/screeching than his actual singing, fits lot more tbh >i dont understand why some of the actually good songs gets less listen than the subpar ones... >T1: meh >T2: i laughed too hard >T3: cheap ass lyrics, amazing guitar >T4: ... no comments >T5: its ass >T6: meh >T7: its aight, i kinda like it >T8: unremarkable >T9: same >T10: okay this one actually slaps ass, i like it, good ass track >T11: its aight >T12: same >T13: remarkable yall glazing this album too much, its surely not the best of its genre. yall just listen to this all day and not even discover the genre urself, still stuck in a "comfort-zone nostalgia" for this album.

A couple of songs on here hold nostalgia for me, though I found trying to listen to this entirely grating.

Now I have to write something on Nirvana. It is weird, to me Nirvana sounds like how I imagine that non metalheads think metal sounds. By accounts it has all these amazing things that should make me like it: It is raw, unique, harsh, creative, powerful, angry. However, it fails to be one thing, it just isn't for me. Still cannot pretend like it is actually a bad record though.

A little crazy mofo the second song. "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter" is also in the crazy vibes. "Tourette's" had to be a little screw loose :) "Heart-Shaped Box" was one on my Spotify's liked list but it's not anymore. It's a good song but it had it's time.

Mostly noise. Few good songs

4/10 Yeah, this listen confirms it, I don't like Grunge, it either bores me or annoys me. Even the most listened track from the album (Heart-Shaped Box) was only okay for me

meh, not my type of thing all apologies is sampled on a bones track

understand that’s it the prob a stable album in the genre and influence a lot after it, but no song had a “it” factor that drew me in

This definitely seems like a popular album with popular songs on it. I also know the band, but even given all of that I just can't get into it. Not my thing, did not enjoy really at all.

Sure, a genre defining album. Is it nice to listen to? Not particularly. Some nice riffs and melodies, and also a lot of noise.

Feedback squeaking in France’s Farmer had me thinking my cars breaks were on the brink

In a previous review for the Unplugged album I called this album a dark masterpiece even though my memory of this album at its release was that it was somewhat lackluster and poorly recorded. So much praise for this album and its Steve Albini production since its release somehow led me to disregard that sentiment and doubt my opinion. It is NOT a masterpiece at all. It’s a pretty uneven affair with some of the songs being just plain obnoxious and purposefully didactic. And in reality it doesn’t even sound good at all. The first critique is also usually the first accolade, the drum sound. They are certainly loud as shit and detailed, but they sound like they were recorded in your living room while you are sitting in it. This roomy reverb tone for the drums and the vigor with which they are attacked is the same for almost every song giving the whole a flat intensity that seldom lets up. Don’t get me wrong, I think Dave is a fine rock drummer, but this album is not why. Then there’s the bass…or is there…? Most of the time I can’t hear it at all and when I do it has a terrible, toyish tone that is anathematic to what should be a heavy band. There are even times where I can sort of make out what he’s playing and it seems like just the sort of rhythmic and sonic texture that the mix and songs so sorely need. That just leaves the guitars, layers and layers of guitars playing almost always the same thing in an attempt to, I don’t know, fill all the empty space left by the non-existent bass and amelodic drums. It’s not much to hold on to.

I believe the reason this album sounded new to me although I had it when it was released is that, even as a teenager, I didn’t like it. This record is just an unfortunate experiment in noisy, screamy rock with sometimes intentionally bad guitar work. Besides the singles, there isn’t much here.

A genre close to what that I listen. (What) “Very Ape”

Devoid of the context of the time I don't know that Nirvana is as timeless as most would have me believe. There is a rawness here that is captivating but outside of the singles I have heard a million times I find very little to draw me in to this album.

Not really my vibe, but parts of it are enjoyable enough. Would have been a 3 star, but too many of the songs felt a bit screamo.

Not my fave screaming genre

Demasiado ruido, no me gusta.

Overrated asf. Also, Kurt no canta bien WHO SAID THAT

I’ve never really been a fan of Nirvana, so I went into In Utero without much excitement. I’ve never fully connected with grunge as a genre, and this album didn’t really change that for me. It feels long, dark, and at times quite heavy going. There are some standout moments, Heart-Shaped Box, All Apologies, and Dumb are all great tracks, but outside of those, I found a lot of the album to be a bit dull. That said, I can appreciate the rawness and honesty in the sound, even if it’s not something I’d choose to revisit often. Favourite tracks: Dumb Least favourite tracks: Pennyroyal Tea didn’t do much for me, and there are a few others that just don’t land Album artwork: Classic cover that’s instantly recognisable

I like Nirvana‘s calmer songs but most songs aren’t exactly calm and that is a bit too much noise and too little melody for my sensitive heart.

Probably the most overrated band of all time. Generally don’t get the hype for Kurt or the whole band itself or the whole genre of grunge tbh. Most of it is repetitive and annoying. This is what the radio plays when they want to be “edgy”. And wtf is the track ‘rape me’ are we just going to skip past that????? Because this what I’m talking about with them trying to be edgy. Even though I’m hating I didn’t think it was that bad and didn’t rly have any feelings for most of it 5.8/10 2.9/5

Too screamy for me

its ok, ive never really listened to nirvana outside of a few songs but dont think id revisit

Not really my style but i really liked dumb and all apologies

I just am not someone who super enjoys songs like the ones on this album.

I never could quite understand the lure of Nirvana. I think they are just larger than their music, similar to Def Leppard or Grateful Dead, where they are more of a symbol of something than actually something. You listen to this album, if it was under any other band name, I doubt many would listen to it and no critics would applaud it, and because the leader singer commits suicide the following year, it is now in the top 1001 albums. The actually songs are terrible. The singing is terrible. The lyrics is relatively bad. The guitar and bass might have some talent, hard to tell based on the style, and the drums are good. It feels like a Kurt Cobain solo album more than a band effort.

i feel like i'd be crucified if i didn't give this a 4 or higher but i really didn't like this considering how popular nirvana is. 1 Star for their pop-culture impact and 1 star for All Apologies

Not my cup of tea

We've had a very Nirvana adjacent week- with the Foo Fighters and Hole- feels bad to say that the Nirvana album is my least favourite of them. But there's no doubt that Nirvana was incredibly influential, only takes a week of album listening to see that. Some too screamy moments that are uncomfortable to listen to and some rough lyrics that are also uncomfortable to listen to, makes the whole listening experience not very enjoyable. Favourite song: Dumb Least: Rape Me

When they aren't screaming I like it, unfortunately they scream a lot.

Grunge just isn't my vibe. I'm not the sunniest/cheeriest type of personality but the negativity, disillusionment and depressive flavor is too much for me.

All Apologies= great rest= ass

When Kurt writes a good song he REALLY writes a good song. Problem is there aren't all that many good songs on here. Nirvana truly were a phenomenon in their time which is why I could see putting a record of theirs on this list.... that record should be Nevermind and this should be for people that want to go digging deeper.

jeg kan sagtens anerkende nirvanas kulturelle impact og deres talent, but its not for me

Haven't heard anything special on this one. Two days after can't even remember anything.

Mid music for a decent band who sold out and went mainstream. They had the right sound at the right time, but I don’t think this album is particularly better than other bands from the time. The fact that they’ve had zero cultural impact a part from the 90s shows how little their music is worth. Their most substantial contribution to music was not making hair metal.

O pior álbum do nirvana

not bad but noise/hard rock is not my thing at the end of the day.

Fav- serve the servants 2.5/5

Never loved Nirvana (or FF for that matter) - couple of popular songs that had some radio play. Grunge did not land for me. Give me the Pixies or Smashing Pumpkins from that era, or Dre and Snoop.

Really like some. Other were “loud and shouty”

I've heard worse I suppose

Like sandpaper to my ears. I’m surprised it was released like this, to be honest.

Noisy crap. Gave it away.

RAPE ME????? no thanks

Good music if you need to get a headache

I can respect the brilliance of Nirvana without caring much for their music. Growing up in the '90s it was hard not to hear Nirvana everywhere, all the time. The instruments often sound like they are fighting each other- I guess some people like that?

I wanted to like it, but I didn’t😔All Apologies was solid, I might need a relisten

2/5 I listened to this a few years ago and didn't really like it. A few tracks were good but a lot were just screaming.

Stark überbewertet.

Nirvana is something that I can only listen to for a short amount of time. It gets too much after a while. I don't like a lot of songs on here. Heart-shaped box is the one that stands out here.

Serve The Servants: 4.6/10 Scentless Apprentice: 4.6/10 Heart-Shaped Box: 4.6/10 Rape Me: 4.7/10 Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle: 4/10 Dumb: 6/10 MBPW Very Ape: 4.3/10 Milk It: 3.8/10 Pennyroyal Tea: 3.7/10 Radio Friendly Unit Shifter: 3.8/10 Tourette’s: 3/10 All Apologies: 3.8/10

Saved only by Heart Shaped Box and No Apologies. Otherwise crap x

I listened to unplugged right after this to get my mind right about nirvana. Never really loved this album. The hits are the songs I like and they’re good. T4 makes me think of shiv Very nitpicky about what nirvana I like. I think this is either a 2 or 3 for me. Would feel weird giving it a score so low as 2, but when I look track by track, with this short of an album, it’s just not worthy of being on the good side of a 5 star rating system—think it’ll be a 2

deffo not my favourite of theirs. way too loud for my liking. maybe I don't like nirvana very much?? idk but i actively did not enjoy this album

Similar to never mind, side A is bangers, side B is lazy

don't really fw nirvana
