Reviews (page 10 of 14)

No me fascinó pero le doy un 6

Not my cup of tea. But good music

Liked the classics. Super clever song names

3.75 Not as good as Nevermind but still has some decent deep cuts.

I've been looking forward to having a Nirvana album because I know they're a big effing deal and so many people love them. I thought this album was... okay. I really *want* to like it, but grunge is tough for me to get into. Usually when I give an album a 3 I won't listen to it again, but I'm hoping that if I add this album into my queue from time to time it'll grow on me.

Not much of a fan. Yes, I know they're influential/important or whatever, but maybe I'm just over the hype. 3/5

Glad I listen to if for no other reason to reaffirm that Nirvana is a unique band. I like some of the songs but others are not to my taste. The good balances out the bad.

Surprisingly, I enjoyed more songs than I thought I would. However, for every really good song, there are two that aren’t even ok in my book.

puntuacion general: 3.5/5 tema fav: rape me Bastante solido, corto pero buen album

frances farmer will have her revenge on seattle was definitely my favorite song from the album (i miss the comfort in being sad… so glad i didn’t know about this one as a teenager). went down a thorough wikipedia kurt cobain frances farmer spiral. idk i think i actually enjoyed it after i got used to it. been listening to my pop girlies for so long it was an adjustment but once i got into it i was there.

I was pretty young during the original Nirvana days, but I remember how cool they were, and how much of a big deal it was when Kurt died. My hot take as I've gotten older is that while Nirvana certainly has some amazing music, I think Kurt's death and the subsequent memorializing has given Nirvana's legacy a bit more juice than it would have otherwise. Listening to this album, there are some standout tracks like Heart Shaped Box, Pennyroyal Tea, and All Apologies, but there are also a bunch of pretty forgettable punk/grunge cuts that don't really add up enough to make this a classic album, at least for me. For my money, Nirvana had one really great album, which was Nevermind. Nothing else really approaches it. In Utero is a 3/5 from me. Some good tracks, but not enough to be blown away by.

I like the quiet-loud-quiet thing, I enjoy the contrast between the rougher, screamier singing and the more melodic parts. Not such a fan of the lyrics for some of the songs. Fav song: Heart-Shaped Box Least fav: Rape Me

Decent songs in some of them but some seriously questionable ones / lyrics as well. When you take it as a whole it’s just not the most enjoyable listening experience. Specific rating - 3.5 Fav song - heart shaped box Least fav- rape me

Not their best but good noise fest considering how big they were by this stage a what direction they could have chosen.

I do not like Nirvanas sound. Vocals are such an huge part of the music and I do not like the voice. Similar feelings I have to NIN. I see the merit and why people would like this but I do not.

I'm never really sure how to classify Nirvana. On the one hand they did pretty kick-start the whole grunge thing, and produced some absolutely phenomenal tracks. On the other hand, Nevermind was their only genuinely good studio album, with Bleach and In Utero being average at best in my opinion. But then, this is all subjective and a lot of people think this album is their best. I'm gonna give this one three and half stars - it's not great, but it's not terrible either.

Ok listening

Great, heavy album, sometimes a bit too heavy and monotone for me. 1. Rape me 2. Heart-Shaped Box 3. Marigold (not on original album, but good enough)

Heart-shaped box/Serve the Servants/Rape me

Not my style of music, good for case though. got me going.

Tough listen, lots of pain. Year I graduated high school. Remember listening in the freshman dorm.

Some bangers

Sick and tired of Kurt's vocals, but the songs are aight

Lyrics 10/10 But it doesn't fits my musical taste. I think it's not my Nivarna's fav.

Like some songs

I really liked their previous album, but this one felt too metal for my taste.

I remember reading About A Boy in English class in 2012, and thinking 'Huh, I've listened to Nirvana and I just... don't get it. I don't get why this teenage character seems to like this band so much. They're fine? I guess?' and this is no different. Nevermind has some fun stuff, but sorry to say it: some of the tracks here were absolutely unlistenable. I mean, Tourette's is just... not very good, is it? Heart Shaped Box, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter good, but overall this is just a fine enough album with some low notes.

Top Songs: Heart-Shaped Box Pennyroyal Tea All Apologies

I absolutely appreciate and understand the cultural significance of this album and I do like some of the songs, but it’s not really my thing. Still very cool though!

This album shocked me into realizing that even though I've listened to Nevermind a hundred times, it's the only Nirvana album I've listened to all the way through. This third and final album with Kurt Cobain contains a couple songs I'm familiar with, but more and edgier songs than I've heard. They sound liberated here, but also disturbed. There's a fair amount of distortion and angst here that can't be heard without thinking of Cobain's approaching suicide.

Despite Heart Shaped Box this tends to be my more forgotten Nirvana album.

pretty popular songs, liked a few, alr heard a few, kinda my jam prolly 3.5

You were culturally conditioned to hate nickleback. Form your opinion. Don't fall for the psyops.

Not a bad one, but didn't find any new gems on it for me except the obvious hits that are worldwide known 😎

1. Serve the Servants: Chill background music. Alt-right tattoo shop vibes. I like. 2. Scentless Apprentice: I enjoy the screaming here, very primal. I like. 3. Heart-Shaped Box: The name is better than the song, I also wish I could eat your cancer. I like. 4. R* me: He wants someone to R* him. Very symbolic. I like. 5. Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle: Samey. I don’t like. 6. Dumb: Peak song, favourite so far. Sounds like “Nevermind”. Mix of Polly, Lithium, and Come As You Are. I like. 7. Very Ape: Very bad. I don’t like. 8. Milk It: Lyricism a snooze, guitar’s obnoxious. That drum line in the chorus is peak. I like. Pennyroyal 10. Radio Friendly Unit Shifter: Boring. I don’t like. 11. Tourette’s: Boring. I don’t like. 12. All Apologies: I wish I was like you, easily amused.

Not my favourite album from them (still incredible instrumental)...

Muy pesado para mi gusto

2 all time classics. A few duds.

I enjoyed this and rating is hard, my indecisiveness prefers to have the option of half stars. I liked it but some repetitive choruses and not many wows for me on first few listens, will maybe revisit after Nevermind

no me interpela

A bit too harsh for me but I can see the appeal :)

This album is quite hard to rate. At parts it has absolute classics that I don't really have anything against, other songs in the album just give me a headache with screeching noises and awful singing/yelling. Guess it can still get a 3

Ok, kind of disappointed to be honest.

The good tracks are classics, but a few of them drag. All Apologies is a top tier closer though.

Never listened the entire album. Most of the songs are too chaotic and mediocre, with the 2 or 3 known songs being ok. 6/10

I have fond memories of listening to music in the car with my dad when I was a young child in the 90s. Nirvanna is one of the first bands that comes to mind when I think of it. Listening to this album, I'm realizing that I think he would skip songs he didn't like, like ones with screaming. I thought I was going to like this album a lot more than I do. It's much harder/heavier than I thought it was going to be. I think I might be a greatest hits girl for this band. I gotta be honest, I only liked the radio songs and a couple of others.

It's Nirvana so it's OK, never really been my type of music though

Personally isnt my taste, the screaming feels jarring but the music ultimately portrays emotions and experiences well. A few songs are exceptions and feel like they are music for music sakes. Overall, this album is a rollercoaster that felt a little dizzy with all of its sudden changes in tone and style. Somewhat Enjoyable.

I'm trying gard but I'm just not a hige fan. I liked Nevermind better. 3/5

Songwriting is a bit better than on Nevermind, but it's also has less fun and exciting moments.

Might catch hell for this, but I didn't love this as much as I thought I would. There are some jams ("Heart-Shaped Box", "Dumb", "Pennyroyal Tea", and "All Apologies"), but then there are some that are so bad that they nearly ruin the whole thing for me ("Scentless Apprentice", "Milk It", "Radio Friendly Unit Shifter", "Tourette's"). When a third of the tracks are barely tolerable to outright bad, there's no way you can earn a 4/5, no matter how strong the hits are. A disappointing 3/5.

Couple of belters on this album

Not bad, but a little too raunchy for me. Some good stuff there

This album's just fine.

sigh it’s good i guess

I guess it earns its place on the list, but that doesn’t mean I have to enjoy it. Intentionally raw, abrasive, and so much screeching—it feels like endurance listening more than pleasure.

Im not a fan of nirvana, i actually enjoyed first part of the album, but the second part was just chaos and screaming into microphone. 3/5.

42 minutes, perfect length for an album. Some 90s true classics, Dumb, All Apologies, Heart Shaped Box. But also lots of yelling and screeching.

Good album, but always felt like them perhaps trying to be awkward compared to Nevermind as an over reaction and perhaps not doing what they really wanted.

Some of tracks are amazing but im not a fan of Nirvana

It is has a visceral quality that is lacking from Nevermind but loses the melodic quality that makes Nevermind stand out. It has moments of this but not enough to elevate it.

I actually think some of the highlights of this are up there with those on nevermind (‘heart shaped box’, ‘all apologies’) but there is quite a bit of comparative filler on it and so is not sustained particularly well.

Liked the music. Lyrics are heavily abstract and feel a bit out there. Don't love them.

Maybe too rock heavy for me, I just don’t see the appeal of the screaming on track 2. Enjoy Nirvanas calmer (or calm for them) vibe maybe on ‘Nevermjnd’ and in pockets of this album. 2nd half a sort of blur which didn't really go on. Enjoyed final song. I think just not for me but can see the appeal.

This is a great album and honestly has some many hidden gems I had forgotten about. I still think Nevermind for me is the superior album, but I appreciate Nirvana, they were a formative band for me in my youth, and they still rock today... and the retro effect bringing them back into style is pretty rad.

Maybe it's time to reevaluate Nirvana without all the hype that surrounded them back in the day. Truth is, this album just isn't that good. Songs are redundant, album sounds like crap. Once again, I wish I could give half stars. In this case I'll reluctantly round up.

Alright

Nirvana e veldig kult, men musikken e ikke like kul. Halve plata e forglemmelig. All Apoligies e den kuleste Nirvana-låten.

Slower and more expanded production but has all the parts of their sound: Kurt’s hushed voice, the guitar work, the quiet-loud sound, and noise. (3.5)

Carried by All Apologies

6 - AVERAGE

4 stars to Heart-shaped box and Rape me, minus 1 because of everything else. i just don't really care about nirvana no matter how much i try, sorry to everyone

Scentless Apprentice Heart-Shaped Box Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle Milk It Radio Friendly Unit Shifter All Apologies

Kann man mal hören

I do wish i liked radiohead more

An iconic album with some well known hits from Nirvana. Lots of edgy screaming. A pretty good album but not a feel good album ya know.

Makes me feel like I’m listening to a really good garage band. Drums are sick. Lyrics seem nonsensical. Really makes me wanna tear shit up.

Insane album to listen to on a Monday morning. First two tracks (esp second) had my ears bleeding. Was good to get exposure to non-Rock Band Nirvana. Kurt Cobain has more range than I realized, but the direction that range extends into is not for me. (I.e. screaming stuff). Forgot what a studio version of All Apologies sounded like - so used to the MTV Live version. So good & haunting.

Teenage angst has paid off well now I am bored and old

I liked this album, but not every song

I've tried to like this album more for a long time. It just feels uneven to me. Some good ones, but some others that I would totally skip, if I were listening to the album normally. 3.5*

familiar vibe

kommt nich an nevermind ran paar banger tho

3/5 there are a few great songs in there but more than a few shit ones to sift through.

NOT A HUGE NIRVANA FAN. But this is a solid, cohesive album. Might not listen to it in its entirety again, but this album features some of my favorite songs by Nirvana (Heart-Shaped Box, Dumb, All Apologies). Had never heard Serve The Servants before and really liked it!

boy music

First songs alot of screaming. Rape me????

Takes me back to my college days with this one! More abrasive than many of their more mainstream hits, but showcases Cobain’s lyrical talent well.

Some high highs and low lows for me personally

liked the first song a lot, some stood out some didn't but also not what i would typically listen to

I respect Nirvana but I also respect that not all of their songs are for me

No my favourite Nirvana, but still a good one.

Nostalgic

Listened 12/30 3 I’d give a partial star too but i can’t. This album just sounds a lot of the same, but obviously was monumental in history. I like it, just a little different from other nirvana songs I like

a couple bangers.

I love the way the drums play the main character throughout the whole album. The melody was IT, but some of the songs were too much for me because of the screaming. Would 100% listen to it again.

I like the popular songs: Heart-shaped Box, Rape Me, and All Apologies. I was surprised that I liked Dumb. But otherwise I found everything else to sound like depressive noise. It really doesn’t compare to the previous album, Nevermind. I won’t give it a 2 though because the songs that I do like are very good.

Heavy , gritty. Not an album on rotation in my world but I appreciate their creativity

Le doy un 7

had already listened to some songs from this, its nice

I can see why this is beloved - lots of very raw emotion and real musical talent. Add to that the personal tragedy of Kurt Cobain and it makes sense this album (and nirvana in general really) is such a watermark. I think ultimately this just isn’t really my thing

Solid staple of grunge music, always a good listen

Some good, some was just noise

Listened too early in the day and ended up needing a nap in the afternoon.

This sure is Nirvana. Some very loud songs, some very good songs. On a different day I might rate it higher! Highlights: 'Heart-Shaped Box' (mainly because of Jordis Unga, who sang this as one of many formative Rockstar INXS tracks, but secondarily for the very useful line "hey/wait/i've got a new complaint"), 'All Apologies' (I've been fuming about the line "What else could I say?/Everyone is gay" for almost 30 years, which people twist themselves in knots to defend, but it is still a good song)

Klassiker aber nicht meins

1. Serve the Servants - 2. Scentless Apprentice - least favourite 3. Heart-Shaped Box - favourite 4. Rape Me - 5. Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle - 6. Dumb - 2nd favourite 7. Very Ape - 3rd favourite 8. Milk It - 9. Pennyroyal Tea - 10. Radio Friendly Unit Shifter - 11. Tourette's - 12. All Apologies -

My least favorite Nirvana album. Doesn’t hit the same as it does in my youth. Definitely a couple of skips that I just can’t handle anymore. Sorry, Kurt, I still love you!

I like them; I really do. But this album, apart from 2-3 songs, sounds very formulaic and predictable.

5/10 - I can appreciate the album for its heavy tones, though nothing really blew me away. I liked All Apologies, but some of the tracks just didn't do it for me.

Very good, little screamy in songs.

Obviously iconic hit from Heart Shaped Box with other solid grunge tracks on the album Personally not for me but I see why it's so successful and a prime example of the genre, band and time period

I remember this music well. Back then, I tried to love it, but I’m over trying to enjoy things I don’t. I’m just not cool enough to like this music. However, it’s an excellent example of pure grunge, with punk and rock influences.

A classic to be sure, but Nirvana never resonates with me that much - though I prefer them to most other grunge acts.

Drums are solid. I found the lyrics and vocal delivery generally poor to my ears. Decent music with bad vocals in my opinion.

Upon listening, one recognizes Nirvana's style, very angry, very raw... but not entirely devoid of a certain melody.

It’s hard to rate a Nirvana album because I was never a fan and I like and don't like it at the same time. I feel same towards Linkin Park music btw. I hate when Kurt Cobain screams into my ear in Scentless Apprentice, but I really like everything in Heart-Shaped Box or Dumb. Overall it's a great music, but most songs are not enough for me somehow. It was really nice listening to the album once, but I don't want to add this to my playlist or listen to it intentionally. 3/5 —————————————— Liked: — Heart-Shaped Box — All Apologies

Man this is a tough listen, knowing what we know now. Part cry for help (the video for Heart-Shaped Box was and still is unsettling), part primal scream therapy (and I've already ripped John Lennon for that), part rock showcase, but put it all together and it works - it's no Nevermind though.

Less distortion than I remembered and an easier listen than I expected. the hits were my favorite - all apologies, Dumb, Heart Shaped box

While I do like some of the songs on this anlbum and some Nirvana songs - I do not lift them up on high as many do. I was around when Nirvana and all of the other grunge bands blew the hair bands and much of the 80s music off the charts. It was a moment that made for some great music. I was more into Pearl Jam and Soundgarden than Nirvana. I like a bit more of a pleasant melody to my music than I felt Nirvana had to offer. That being said, I enjoyed rocking out to this album but it is just ok to me.

some good songs but as an album this one doesn't impress me in the nirvana discog

You know, I was expecting it to be more hard-hitting. There’s no denying Cobain’s unique vocals which matches the grittiness of the guitar and drums but I didn’t find myself enjoying this album as much as I wanted to.

Good, I liked the grunge guitar and there are some classics on there. That said, probably not listening to this album again anytime soon. Can't really say why, just not making any lists.

Dude would not stop whining

Nirvana’s last album that picks up where Nevermind left off and then some. Louder guitars, angrier lyrics, and more of cobain Screaming. Very ape and all apologies my favourite tracks (and some of the least grungey).

A nice raw sound. Essential grunge. In retrospective I find it a bit dated, and quite monotonou though.

It's fine, I love Bleach and the second half of Nevermind. I understand why people love this record, but I've never enjoyed it, I gave it three stars because "Serve the Servants" and "Frances Farmer..." are great songs

This is pretty good; several memorable tracks. But i can’t really get behind a band encouraging rape. Smacks of being desperate for attention. It’s a 3.

Not my favorite, not the worst. 5.8/10

This is a tough one for me. There are great tunes. It sounds massive. It's a visceral kick. It's like a window right into Cobain's soul, but rather than bringing me in, I'm watching (listening to) him feel it. And I guess that's for the best, I don't envy his anguish. A review I've read suggests this was the band's attempt to shed its audience and speaks of how deliberately difficult it is, and I guess that's what I feel. It's better than a 3, but I never liked it more than that.

Not a big Nirvana fan, but definitely props to their innovative music.

I like the hits, but some of this is too miserable and scream-y for me.

Thrashier than "Nevermind" and I like it. Kind of similar to that record though as the hits were a step above the other tracks, but I much prefer this record.

I can only listen to so much feedback and screaming before I hit skip

Love the album

Although I'm kind of glad to have this album in this collection, as I always meant to listen it but never got around to it, I'm also a bit disappointed because it sounds much like I expected it to, and I already knew my appreciation of Nirvana's style is *very* limited, and pretty much limited to "Nevermind". So while I enjoyed "Nevermind"-adjacent tracks like "Heart-shaped box" (with a fantastic video), "Rape me" (sort of), "Dumb" and the closer "All apologies", much of the rest of the album is a grind through their pre-Nevermind ultra-grunge aesthetic filtered through Steve Albini's distinctive recording style (apparently much to the studio's dismay). The apex/nadir of this direction are probably "Scentless apprentice" and "Tourette's"; well done, but not really my kind of thing. Nirvana was definitely too talented to ever label "Nevermind" a one-hit album, but "In Utero" sadly showcases the somewhat limited range of their genius.

Enjoyable but not great.

Sacrilege, I know. I just prefer Nevermind. Favorites: All Apologies, Rape Me.

An album full of anger and frustration, sometimes beautifully expressed, and sometimes primal noise that only echoes properly in the resonance of personal anguish.

Aah...takes me back. But not their best...too hit or miss.

Some great and iconic songs, but feel like it is one or two songs too long to keep up the intensity.

Serve the servants, All apologies och Frances Farmer är bra låtar.

My first listen to a Nirvana album. If I had his as a teenager it would probably still be one of my favorites. Instead I just feel late to the party, not there for it. But life is long, who knows?

I felt like this album was missing something

In Utero blasts away with metaphorical darkness, grunge, and aggressive sadness. It definitely takes you on a ride, through some softer (only in comparison to other songs) more enjoyable tunes like Heart-Shaped Box, Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle, and Rape Me. Then it hits you with some pretty intense songs such as Milk-Tea and Tourette's, both in lyrics and sound. First time listening to a full Nirvana album. The album art reminds me of the 2025 Frankenstein movie by Del Toro (side note, highly recommend the movie btw, out on Netflix tmmrw) album was 7/10, Frankenstein movie was a 9/10

listened to this while doing chem textbook problems (kms) and i lowkey just don’t rlly think that this is my vibe (it was still pretty good)

Gruuuunge! Rocking, annoying, raw, impressive, lot's of varied thoughts. Go Nirvana!

While not a Nirvana hater, I always ranked them at the bottom of the grunge bands. In my (rarely) humble opinion, they were the least talented of the bunch and definitely the most abrasive sounding. Considering they specifically hired a producer for this album to make it sound MORE abrasive, it’s just not for me. Three standout songs and the rest are iffy at best with a couple that are just hard to listen to. Almost gave it 2 stars but the standout songs are some of their biggest hits and are really good.

Meh. Probably one of the most overrated bands ever. Everything from 90s Radiohead and 90s Smashing Pumpkins is better than this. 🤷‍♂️ . I really don’t like the extra grungy vocals on many of the tracks. Is loving Nirvana a cult? I don’t get it. As the album progressed my rating got lower and lower. During Frances Farmer it got to maybe a 2 I dislike his vocals and the song that much. Definitely not a 4-5 star album for me. More like 2-3. Best part: drums. Worst part: vocals.

Very grunge compared to later albums. Even All Apologies is rougher

I don't like that i got nirvana AGAIN so soon after listening to Nevermind . at least its better than nevermind

A good album musically but not being someone who cares for lyrics, I dont get the Nirvana simping. Do I like it? Yes.Would i buy it? No.

I was in high school when Nirvana became big. They were massive. Teen Spirit was unavoidable. I have a natural tendency to not like things that are popular. The more popular it is, the more wary of it I tend to be. All this to say: I really hated Nirvana. I didn't care about Kurt Cobain. I had other things to do. I've never listened to In Utero in its entirety until today. And I can see that I didn't miss much. There are a few OK songs, but to now middle-age me, this is just shouty and loud for no real reason. I can hear the bands that made them, and I know they are hugely influential. Now that I live in the PNW, I have more of an appreciation for grunge. I'm giving this a 3, not because I love it, but because anything less would just be me being playing into my unfair and snotty "if it's popular, it sucks" way of thinking. On to the next!

Helt ok

2.9/unfortunately this album does not do it for me. i love heart shaped box but the rest of this is too much

Solid listen, I think the stand out tracks to me were Heart-Shaped Box and Pennyroyal Tea. Something I was thinking about as I was listening was how the mainstream Nirvana that I've heard has shaped my idea of their sound into something that is probably not representative of their catalog. I'm excited to hear more from there that really leans into the more punk and edgy sounds that we heard on this one.

First two tracks are a joke right?

It’s oookay. Still don’t understand the mass appeal of Nirvana.

Haven't heard this album for years & Coming back to it there is a bit much screaming to love it as a whole album. But the more accessible tracks, e.g. Dumb, All apologies make me want to rate it higher

tie between their best album. but, grunge just really hasn't stood up to the test of time.

Solid effort that mixes sharp edged guitars and urgency but short of their very best

its not Nevermind but it still has some epic tracks on it

66/1089 Scentless Apprentice was too much for me, i can see the appeal, especially live but i’m jus not into that. Heart-Shaped Box is iconiccc though the beeping in Radio Friendly… was awful which is a shame because i quite liked the song other than that

Respect for their music although mostly not for me. I only like a couple of songs on this album. A generous 3

Grew up in the 90s and was never really in too grunge just passed me by as was more into the rave scene and Brit pop Really enjoyed this album the lyrics of the songs and voice of Kurt Cobain are quite haunting knowing what we know now

I’m familiar with some of Nirvana’s music but this is my first time hearing the album in its entirety. I already knew a few of the songs. To be honest, I’m a little disappointed. I thought I would enjoy it more. I think Nirvana has better music out there. Still, I found several songs to add to my library. Added to Library: Milk It Radio Friendly Unit Shifter Tourette’s All Apologies

Pretty disappointing - thought this would be a good album but a few songs saved it from a 2 star rating. First full album from nirvana I’ve heard, not a fan.

90s grunge isn't really my thing but I enjoyed listening. I much preferred their first album Nevermind.

not my fave, but its crazy that this is the last one. i guess the Unplugged is so prolific that is stands almost as an album. i like the From the Banks... more for that version of tourette's. this has iconic songs, but none of them really hit for me. it is pret good. 3/5

a mixed bag with insane highlights. scentless apprentice is my favorite nirvana song

Contains some of their most recognizable tunes, but parts of it are a bit too abrasive for my tastes.

Ahhh, the memories. The deluxe release had some interesting versions.

Got some great moments, but I'm not a fan of grunge in general.

Not as good as their other album but still ok.

it was decent; i mostly liked the singles that i had already heard

The first time this album came out, Nirvana had already become parodies of themselves. Grunge & heroin - not my cup of tea. I didn't like this too much then and I don't much like it now.

The hits are solid, but everything else is too grungey and noisy for me. Never been a huge Nirvana fan tbh and this hasn't changed much for me.

Not really the biggest Nirvana head. This album kind of played right into that too. The singles that I already knew are always good but I didn't really like any of the songs I didn't know. A little too grungy for my liking I think has always been the issue.

Not an easy listen for the most part. Heart Shaped Box (that's about my...Courtney Love is rumored to have said) and All Apologies are familiar, but the rest feels like a noisy rebuke of Nevermind and the accompanying fame that tortured Kurt Cobain. Rape Me, with its Smells Like Teen Spirit Hooks, underlines the point.

The place governments need to stay the hell out of.

not millennial enough to truly enjoy this imo

High energy on each track, but sometimes the screaming and screeching got very obnoxious quickly. I can appreciate the lyricism for its time, but personally, I don’t think their meanings have necessarily aged well over time.

Mr. Cobain is an angry man who uses some not very nice words.

It was good but I prefer Nevermind

Nirvana’s In Utero, released in 1993 as the follow-up to Nevermind, is a deliberately abrasive and harrowing record that strips away the polish of its predecessor in favor of Steve Albini’s raw, unvarnished production, leaving guitars snarling, drums booming, and Kurt Cobain’s voice teetering between scream and sob. The album is uglier in every way—musically, lyrically, and emotionally—yet within the noise lie flashes of uneasy beauty: “Heart-Shaped Box” with its familiar soft-loud dynamics, the understated melancholy of “Dumb,” and the weary resignation of “Pennyroyal Tea” and “All Apologies.” Elsewhere, songs like “Rape Me,” “Very Ape,” and “Radio Friendly Unit Shifter” bristle with irony and defiance, even when their rawness threatens to drown out Cobain’s songwriting. More than just a collection of songs, In Utero plays as the sound of a man unraveling under the crushing weight of fame and illness, a jagged and fascinating prelude to tragedy that remains as uncomfortable as it is essential.

I always knew I'd grown out of grunge when I was about 15. Hearing the so-called 'cerebral' Nirvana album, I am now totally sure of this.

I have a lot of thoughts on this album. Everyone said that Nevermind was their "sellout" album after the masterpiece that was Bleach. To me, this seems like the sellout record after the masterpiece of Nevermind. None of the songs are remotely as good. I think Kurt Cobain and gang did this just to make the record company happy. You can tell it by the disgust in the lyrics for many of the songs. Heart Shaped Box was an obvious play for radio and MTV airplay, and All Apologies was Kurt's suicide note and is the best song on this album, hands down. I would have loved if they could have done one more album without the pressure of the record companies. On their own terms... but alas. RIP Kurt. 3.38 / 5 stars

A few songs I liked but not a fan of the album iself

A couple good ones, but it’s not as good as that other album they have with the baby

i like his ideas

I drove to the CrossCreek Mall in my 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass Sierra and went into MusicLand and bought this and Weezer’s blue album on the same day with 30-something dollars that I earned working as a bag boy at Winn Dixie earning $5.25 per hour. Gods I was strong then. So, having listened to this for the last thirty years on and off (mostly off since 1997 or so) this isn’t bad. You know what would’ve vastly improved it? Less loud distorted guitars and yelling. Like, instead of quiet LOUD quiet LOUD, why not try quiet quiet quiet quiet. That would make for some good music. I think the problem with fast and loud music after a certain age is that fast and loud music is for getting pumped up. But I’m not looking to get pumped up for anything. I’m done with being excited about things. I’ve gotten my education, married, almost finished raising my children, am in the last job I’m ever going to have, and I don’t drink or smoke or take drugs or gamble or chase women. I can travel, but it’s all just long flights or drives and slightly different looking tourist traps. I suppose I’ll see my children get married (great, I’ll have to get dressed up and stay out too late and it will cost me $20k) and meet my grandchildren (great, somebody else to have to take care of, will probably also cost me money). Basically, all that I have before me is twenty more years of work, ten years of sitting around watching TV and going to doctor’s appointments, and then death. I don’t need pump up music. My pumping days are over. So stop all the yelling and just leave me alone and let me listen to Billy Joel and Steely Dan until I die.

3/5, overall a good grunge album but I hate the 4th song so much. The lyrics make so uncomfortable and that took me out of it to be honest. Love the final song though, All Apologies will forever be a classic!

A pretty good record! There’s a lot of good songs, then there’s just songs that are EHHHH

Would give it 3.5 stars if I would but ultimately I just wish Kurt Cobain were still alive :(

I love the rougher stuff on here and it starts and ends strong with the best tracks bookending the record.

Meh 2.7

Getting to old for this…

Heart-shaped box reigns supreme. TBH I don't really need the rest of this album, like it's fine but nothing super wowing. Dumb is kind of cool but nothing I'm super obsessed with. 2.5/5 stars.

Yeah liked this one should really listen to Nevermind. Also sounded like a cat throwing up but kinda worked

I think this is awesome but at times can be too over the top. I also think the band has better releases.

Heart Shaped Box is probably the best song Nirvana ever recorded. Most of the rest of this sounds like they’re trying to reinvent themselves and it’s not working.

Re: Heart-Shaped Box—it's like the all the band members are trying to outdo each other, and it works so well. They're breathless, I'm breathless..

I understand how iconic it is, and there are a couple absolute bangers, but overall too grunge for my taste.

It's a good album but not a sound or style I'm into and I don't think it is really super strong consistently.

If you like screaming, you'll like this album

Music of my generation. I guess!

I like Nirvana but it’s always been a little too angry for me.

Not as good as Nevermind. Still decent.

I really like Nirvana but, also, I'm not sure I really like Nirvana. At least, I don't think I like them as much as I'm supposed to. The two singles on this album are great and are probably about as Nirvana as I go. The rest are a little too much for me. I'll always be grateful to Nirvana for unleashing Dave Grohl on the world.

I’ve never really been a Nirvana fan. It’s a bit too ‘herm yarl’ as they used to say on the Time Crisis podcast (that 90s kind of growly/nasally vocal sound that acts like Pearl Jam and Nickelback have). I don’t mind the hits (basically just Heart Shaped Box on this album) like I can admit some of it goes pretty hard but also I just find a lot of it quite grating.

Some bangers some songs I wish I never heard

Decent.

Lots of noise in between some good music. Angst angst angst. I dunno as i get older i seem to lose interest in Nirvana

# 527 : In Utero "In Utero" marks a more mature and unfiltered chapter for Nirvana. The album leans into a raw, emotional intensity—sometimes a bit too screamy for my taste—but it still delivers some powerful moments. There are definitely a few standout tracks and bangers, and one song I keep coming back to is Dumb. It’s a real highlight for me—simple, haunting, and beautifully done. Overall, a solid album that pushes their sound while staying true to their grunge roots. Worth listening to: Dumb Listened: 18/07/2025

Raw, angry, unsettling. It's obvious in hindsight that Kurt Cobain was in a bad place when this was recorded. It's hard to rate this. The best tracks (Heart Shaped Box, Dumb, All Apologies) are easy 5 stars, as good as or better than what is on Nevermind. Everything else ranges from uncomfortable to unlistenable.

This one could have used some more time….in utero

3,5⭐️ Best song: dumb or pennyroyal tea Worst song: tourette's

Some great songs but overall not my fav grunge album

Raw...very hard to listen to

Not even the best Nirvana, so very over rated.

I really don't like grunge

The vibes are not for me on this one tbh. It's technically good but idk not my bag.

Honestly pretty hard for me to listen to.

Had big hopes knowing Heart Shaped Box, Rape Me and All Apologies Some faster tempo tracks (Very Ape) and Dumb was pretty good It's a shame I knew the three best tracks already, rest feels not as good Best new track - Dumb

After listening to serve the servants, I was pretty impressed, and looking forward to the rest of the album… and besides heart shaped box,(a song I already knew), and all apologies, I wasn’t very impressed. Nothing really wowed me, and perhaps that was unfair expectations to put on a 90s grunge album, but being as hyped as nirvana often is… it was kinda just okay in my opinion. Not a bad album by any means but nothing like amazing either.

If Nevermind stands as Nirvana's most iconic and refined work, then In Utero is very much a deliberate detour. That’s not to say it’s a bad album—it’s just vastly different. The rawness is intentional, sure, but at times the mix feels like it lacks punch, and a few tracks come off as half-finished ideas rather than fully realized songs. It has a certain emotional weight, which I think is part of why it ends up on so many “greatest albums” lists. But let’s be real: a lot of that reverence stems from the tragic timing of its release—this was Kurt Cobain’s final studio statement. Again, In Utero has its moments, and it’s far from a throwaway. But if I’m stacking it up next to Nevermind, it just doesn’t hold the same ground for me. There—I said it.

That’s caustic (but disturbingly appealing .) There’s some screeching and feedback for sure, but it worked back then because (we never heard anything like it and) it was contemporary, different, and cool. The three mainstream hits do carry the album, but that makes sense because I’m mainstream over 60. Comes in at a Fat, Dumb, and Happy (3.49*s) the feedback was a smidge too much.

To echo a previous review, I've always liked but not loved Nirvana. In Utero is a perfect glimpse of this as it has some really strong tracks but also some filler that leaves a lot to be desired. The album gets recognition for the mainstream hits and keeping Nirvana firmly in the limelight. It's a good album, but I can't really call it a great album. While Nirvana's mark on music is undeniable there are parts of their catalog that don't resonate with me. This isn't an attempt at a hipster hot take, as I'm a fan of the band, I just never held them in quite as high regard as the rest of the public. 2.97 stars

i can see why it's loved. But that's not my thing entirely :(

Ehh there are definitely some bangers, but overall it was a little too punk for me. Soz

I think it’s a good album just not my style of music - I just can’t get on with nirvana

Classic.

Heart-Shaped Box, Rape Me, Dumb, Radio Friendly Unit Shifter and All Apologies are my highlights. Other songs are mostly fine. Steve Albini's fingerprints can be spotted easiest close to the start of the album, especially in the guitars reminiscent of Big Black. The goal was to be abrasive, and it succeeds - I found it exhausting to listen to in one go. On an objective level there's not a single song I wouldn't like or at least enjoy, but I'm not objective, and I found it samey and a bit tiresome by the time we pass the second song.

Did not stand the test of time. At all

classique

6/10 a lot of high pitch sounds that hurt my ears and some songs are just boring

Alright, probably would have helped if I wasn’t in a rush to leave the house/cleaning cat puke off my shoes. Owe it another listen

Looking back now, many better grunge albums than this....

Caught between liking the general sound but it being too screechy, or is that grungy? And let's be honest, a lot of the songs do sound pretty similar.

Yikes! Loved heart shaped box HATED scentless apprentice and... Track 4.

Some really great tracks on this album. About half of the songs are fairly forgettable however

Nirvana is the culmination of post-punk alternative rock from the early 80s until the early 90s. They feel more representative of the musical trends that took rock from punk to grunge than Pearl Jam or Soundgarden. This is better than Nevermind. I also think the album tracks are better than the hits, Herat-Shaped Box and Rape Me. Very Ape is a good album track. All Apologies is a great song, great electric, great acoustic.

Teenage me thought this was way better than 45 year old me. Some great tracks but overall just doesn’t do it for me

nirbaba

I was never much of a fan of grunge. I understand it was a stripping down of rock to its basics after the excesses of the hair metal days. But it was always a bit too simple and muddy for me. Nirvana's Nevermind was a masterpiece though. Melding pop sensibilities with grunge. In Utero seems like Cobain was purposefully trying to alienate the casual listeners to their first album and see who was left. As such, there are a few good songs on there, but the rest are loud, noisy and brash. Not necessarily a bad thing, but not for me.

Not a big Nirvana fan. But favorite songs from the album: - Heart-shaped Box - Dumb - All Apologies

It's okay - never got into the grunge stuff that much. Remember hearing this when it was first released and thought it was boring.

Man, this was confusing. I probably enjoyed 35% on the record. But I GET IT. I get the concept, the idea, and why they chose this sound. Did I enjoy it? No. I'm not sure how to rate this one.

Not a big Nirvana fan, this is the best I have heard by them. High 3.5 stars

Really good instrumentals, vocals are fine too. I can listen to this again. 3.4

pre good hehe

Its fine I guess

Kicsit sok

I want to like them, I feel like I should like them, but after every listen I am left feeling like I wanted more from it. I'm not really sure how to put it into words, i just want something else from their albums. Maybe I just don't get it

Some songs were great, don’t get me wrong, but I just didn’t see the appeal for a majority of it.

It's hard to rate this album. I've heard most these songs in one form or another all my adult life. I can't imagine a moment where I'd say I really want to hear Heart-Shaped Box. I've never had any distance from that song. My initial reaction was that this album is a slog. Most because it was so familiar and very "noise rock" (harsh, on cusp of metal; "Senseless Apprentice") But, as i lived in it a bit (after track 4) It mellowed and I became more tolerant of it. Actually really like this version of Dumb and All Apologies.

This is one of those albums I appreciate but, aside from the hits, don't really enjoy. I always had a hard time putting this on to play, although there's some pretty incredible material here.

Goodbye album from a very troubled man, unable to deal with the given title of "the voice from a generation". This album is raw, but is also decadent and sleazy. It shows neglect and pain, disguised under the veil of the "band of the decade" banner.

Huge guitar sound! First time to listen to an entire Nirvana. Like the music but never really dug ‘em.

They honestly sound more like creed than I remembered

Not terrible, but not really my style. Update: it’s kinda growing on me, but still not as good as the other ones so far Songs added to playlist: Heart-Shaped Box Rape Me Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge On Seattle Very Ape All Apologies

Honestly, good and bad. It was a middling album that I don’t feel the need to listen to again.

Although I’m not the biggest fan of the abrasive mix and grunge in general, this album does manage to convey a sentiment very well and the musicianship is top notch.

I respect Nirvana and especially this album for what they started and inspired

Not nearly as good as Nevermind. If I didn't know it was released later I'd think it was an earlier album. It's kind of a mess except for a couple of songs.

• banger after banger • Heart shaped box ⬆️ • Marigold ⬆️ • Dumb ⬆️

Great band, great album. I prefer “Nevermind” over this one.

I've tried listening to this album before, but I never really enjoyed it. In general, I don't really enjoy listening to rock music. This album has some nice songs, but they're not really special. I think Nevermind is much better. I love Kurt and his story, but this album doesn't really do it for me.

From one Pat Smear associated group to the next! This album kinda flew right by me. And I’m not sure that’s a good thing. There’s some things worth celebrating on In Utero; I think Kurt Cobain sings about things in a very measured mature manner. I think the cello on “Dumb” and “All Apologies” is AMAZING. I also believe the MTV Unplugged record gives me the best parts of In Utero and leaves out all the rest. I couldn’t grasp a lot of the deep cuts on this project, unfortunately.

I really just don't think it's that good - and I don't think it's aged particularly well. Or maybe I haven't? I think there are better grunge, better punk, better pop groups out there. I know Albini is well liked but I think Albini does better with, well, bands that do more Albini stuff. I kinda just wanna go listen to other Albini albums. High point for me is the last half of Radio Friendly Unit Shifter to first half of Tourette's (a song that I think should be given to a different vocalist).

Melhor música: "All Apologies"

Harder than I thought it would be. The good songs are the hits. Fairly forgettable.

More good grunge

This music was a decade late for me. While the Police and U2, followed by The Cure and Kate Bush knocked my love for music a mile down the road in one step, Nirvana - with respect - does not.
