Reviews (page 13 of 13)
Tres Hombres by ZZ Top solidified the fact that I don’t really like ZZ Top. I appreciate the musicianship but I’m really not their demographic on so many levels.
This made me wanna join a bike gang (derogatory).
not really my thing
eh
Sound is too much Rock and currently not my taste. In former times especially in the 80s I liked ZZ Top more
Not that exciting
Lagrange is the stand out on this album. The rest of the album wasn’t very exciting to me. Just sort of “meh” blues rock and I’m not really a fan of the blues. It’s just a bit too formulaic for me. The shredding guitars stand out for sure but would probably enjoy the live show more than the recorded music.
Stiff
Tres Hombres' title hints at a potential Latin lilt, but there definitely ain't none. Instead, ZZ Top serve up straight down the middle blues and rock & roll, done well. Especially La Grange. La Grange is done especially well. But it's all a bit too straight down the middle, too bound to the road.
Good band and some cool guitar playing. The songs didn’t do really do anything for me. I’m kinda over the classic blues rock of the 60’s and 70’s. I’ve heard so much of it in my life that I don’t have any space to hear any more of it for the first time. I’d rather just listen to the Allman Brothers or something else that I like more. 2.5
This is maybe a 3 but it felt like a chore to get through. Really unoriginal and uninspired derivative blues rock.
I didn’t feel like there was anything interesting about this but I appreciated the length.
I bet this album did great with weekend warrior dads, the guy who crushes beers in his garage to work on a project but really just wants to be away from his wife and kids. pretty standard affair for ZZ Top, La Grange is probably the standout hit so your mileage may vary with this one.
This blows.
Oh no, not more blues influenced rock for middle aged dudes... I mean, this one was okay, but even the iconic track La Grange didn't feel like anything special here once it just started having rambling guitar, which seems to be what every track here devolves into. This felt more like strutting down the street than biking down the interstate, and I mean that as a positive, but it is certainly clear why this band as a whole is more iconic than most of the tracks they produced, let alone a whole album.

not my thing
La Grange was good but everything else was ok.
Felt sort of generic
Two stars for zz top. But it was very boring.
White boi boogie - not great, not terrible
OK. Sound doesn't feel that unique to me but the time the band has been together is impressive.
La Grange is such a standout. Otherwise, just okay.
2.75
I liked the vibe but I just wasn’t feeling the whole thing
I was expecting to give this a 1, but they beat my expectations a little. While I listen to again: 0%
Not my favorite album, guitar tones and solos were fun until they all sounded the same. Skipped one on the album and the 3 live ones, band definitely sounded similar to their recordings which is pretty cool. Too repetitive for me to add any songs.
Normally, I can never go wrong with some good old 1970s rock, but this album just didn't do much for me. The guitarist went absolutely wild in some of his verses, which was cool to see, but the vocals weren't my favorite.
I never really got into them and this album still didn't do the trick. Talented but too hectic and just never really felt their groove. I'll stick with Zeppelin and AC/DC for rock legends of the 70's.
Good
Boring. One good song
I understand the cultural significance, but their songs all kind of sound the same to me. Again, not really my taste
Not my type of music
I laid back so far, the back of my head rested on my ass.
Sounds like it would get played in a rubbish theme biker bar
I actually didn’t mind this one. Not too bad.
Not a huge ZZ Top guy, a lot of the songs sound similar to me.
Fav: La Grange LF: the rest I guess, it all felt pretty similar Mid 4
Very bluesy. Listenable.
It's a classic album but just weak for the most part. Couple of good songs
I like bluesy rock tunes so I expected to enjoy this a bit more. It just fell a bit flat for me, the guitars were impressive enough, there just didn’t seem to be any passion, on the vocals especially. I suppose they’re going for a bit of a slacker delivery which can definitely work but this album was straight up dull. The ballad like tracks sucked what little energy there was. Never so much cared for La Grange either, the riff is awesome but the song itself is meh. Huh I guess I just don’t like ZZ Top. 2.5 stars
I almost always skip La Grange and Sharp Dressed Man when it comes up on some random playlist, and that’s kind of 98% of ZZ Top songs I can name? This was fine 🤷🏻♂️ They’re extremely technically proficient and the production value is unreal. I respect it for sure, but this kind of blues is not something I seek out, and this doesn’t change that.
Meh
Wow, a lot of these riffs are super repetitive! Also they are responsible for inspiring a lot of shitty acts, though I am grateful for their influence on Josh Homme who does this type of rock best, in my opinion.
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: not really my thing Favourite song: Track 10 - La Garange
Another of these dime a dozen, clichéd rock bands who think they are the shit. I'm sure this is what i needed to hear before I die.
Noh rokkia...
I liked the music on this album better than their 80's stuff. Too guitar heavy. A lot of elements that I like in other music-- bluesy rock, gritty vocals--doesn't seem to come together in a way that I like it. La Grange, the one song I knew before listening to this entire album, has a better balance of beat and guitar.
Sheik - best track. Great rhythm section. however not my thing, too Bible-belt rock.
Well I've definitely heard La Grange. First one I recognize. Meh it was okay. Only 2 stars.
They might be the best bar band in the world, but they still sound kinda shitty to me.
not much to say here
Zed Zed Top have their charms (aesthetically, and occasionally musically), but I’ve heard two of their albums now and they haven’t won me over. Eliminator has more to recommend it, but this one is just pretty average blues rock.
Too mumbly
Better than K expected. I don't like La Grange, but the other songs were less annoying.
Chugging rock
Meh
I think I knew La Grange before (maybe from ads?), that one and Sheik were pretty good. Apart from that, it kinda blended over into each other. Listened to the Expanded Remaster. + La Grange + Sheik (from The Legend of Zelda)
Not very interesting. If you like Southern Rock you might like this one.
Sounds all the same.
No, this isn't it. Most songs were too calm for my tastes, and despite me not liking La Grange much in Guitar Hero, it sounded even worse this time around. They know how to play the guitar, but I'd like to see them play the guitar somewhere else. 2/5.
Pretty forgettable for the most part. Some songs the vocals are pretty bad. La Grange is the only song that left a lasting effect
Incredibly boring album, some decent guitar but thats about it.
Pretty boring. Rock should have jagged edges and be able to hear the musicians punching above their weight. Everything is so smooth and in the pocket it hits like elevator music.
2:17 of La Grange plus a bunch of ho-hum boring shit.
Rating: 2.5/5 Good guitar work but the vocalist sounds like he has a potato stuck in his throat and tries to cough it up. There are few tracks that stand out on their own. Rest of the album is pretty much forgettable. Listen to this if you need some truckin' music to ride to. Best song: La Grange (Road trip classic, love the rhythm) Worst song: Hot, Blue and Righteous (Slow ballad, hard to stomach after 1 minute)
One of the least interesting albums of all time by one of the least interesting bands of all time. Google "10 Hours of Intense Snoring" to get my extended thoughts.
lowkey snoozer
Meh
Another album by ZZ Top and another reason why I'm not a fan of this band. Extremely monotonous and irritating drum line makes it almost unbearable to listen for longer than couple minutes. Vocal is rather unassuming and generic, I have heard voice like that in every other rock bands. The big highlight of the band are the guitars. Riffs are okay, but every time the band comes up with an unusual melody, or with another solo, you can tell its something special and unique. I didn't really like "La Grange", the biggest hit from this album. My favourite song was "Jesus Just Left Chicago". Drummer actually tried to do something different on this song and that was enough to change the whole perception of this record. Unfortunately, too little, too late. I'm not a fan and probably I won't ever be one.
Basic and boring.
Kräkfull på efterfest I Vetlanda? Nog med det.
Good music but a bit boring and not memorable
Pfffft. I don't know man.
The beards and shades had me off, I thought ZZ Top would be way more fun than this.
ZZ Stop
Jesus left Chicago is the only good ZZ Top song
2.5
2.5
Not terrible but I just wasn’t enjoying it that much. Not my genre I guess.
This album was okay. Not my favorite
Pretty boring.
Dos estrellas ⭐️ ⭐️ 👍🏾
Passable southern boogie rock. Not my cup of tea. 2.5 🌟
A mix of decent country rock and unbearable drawling country - there are glimpses of brilliance here, but the overall product comes across as a loosely-bundled collection of guitar noodling
Tråkig
Not my go-to sound but jazzy and would be fun to dance to.
Honestly, just very blah, hyper-masculine music. Not super creative. La Grange is a great song though.
meh, aaight and live...
Literally only know of ZZ Top from the song 'La Grange' and that Billy Gibbins is Angela's dad in the TV Show Bones. Thankfully 'La Grange' was on this record. Overall it was a little meh. Gibbins' guitar shredding is probably the only thing that saved the entire album. Best: La Grange Worst: Hot, Blue and Righteous
hi- la grange It's fine...Had this album when I was a kid, wasn't a favorite then, still isn't.
Ok, new(not that new tho I’ve been thinking about it for a while) this list includes a lot of records only so very important songs get to be featured even if the rest of the record is irrelevant. Ok La Grange is a great song but not worth the full album
More than Sabbath, less than Lynryrd Skynyrd. Brawny, dumb and lots of fun.
Pretty okay but I’m just not really into blues rock. Better than I thought ZZ Top sounded. Best song: La Grange solely cause now I know what it’s called and that it’s by ZZ Top
La Grange is a classic. Rest is fine. 5/10
classic rock tropes
Hmmm well I liked the fist couple of songs. Like the stile but the songs themselves got a bit boring as the album went on.
Boring
Only having listened to La Grange off this album before getting into it, the rest of it was disappointingly boring.
ZZ Top, before the beards and sunglasses, were strong players in the blues rock genre. It's very blues. Blues to a T. So much so that ZZ Top rarely does anything subversive or innovative to do much interesting with their sound. The obvious exception to this is La Grange, a more southern-geared rock piece that showcases ZZ Tops strengths: tighter playing styles and bringing the drums to the forefront. Instead of playing metronome for the 12-bear blues, La Grange has drummer Rube Beard as an active participant in the band for once. Ultimately, La Grange serves to show that the band has potential to be great, but decidedly muddles around in mediocrity throughout the album's runtime.
Very much not my jam and kind of boring.
RIP in peace Dusty Hill.
Not as country of an album, very bluesy combined with that country feel. I can tell it's a great album, but this is still not really for me.
Liked this album, although I found that the songs sound rly similar IMO, still liked it tho.
I like Le Grange and that is about. I get bluesy jam bands are a lot of people's thing but just not mine
This album is good. I am not a head-butting rock lover but I can recognise good melodic rhythms, tight guitar playing and generally well put together distinctive and individual songs.
Not my cup of tea
boooring
Some beard slappin' ass tunes.
I sleep
I have to say, that this is not an album I will listen to again, because it wasn't to my taste and that is why I've decided to give it two stars
Not bad. Best track La Grange & Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers.
Didn’t even finish. Found myself bored.
I can see what this album is trying to do, and I even liked it for a few songs, but it gets old very quickly.
Ja. Schön, das mal gehört zu haben.
Just simply not for me
It's a live album and I normally don't rate those high. You have to be there to get the full effect. He incorporates Capital Theater into his song and the crowd goes wild. That means nothing to me. I don't even know where Capital Theater is. It isn't anything bad until they start adding back in the crowd and it's just annoying. Few songs are better in the live version. I'd rather just listen to these songs on their studio albums.
Pretty boring
Meh. Not my type of music.
Meh.
too old head for me
I guess they're talented, but I don't know what I'd do in the audience.
classic rock isn’t really my type but not bad
pretty generic blues
boooooooored as hell
Tres Hombres is often praised as a cornerstone of blues rock, but I found it surprisingly dull. While the trio is undeniably tight as a band, most of the album blends together into a repetitive mix of mid-tempo blues riffs that rarely evolve or build any real excitement. Billy Gibbons' guitar work is technically solid, but it seldom ventures beyond familiar blues-rock clichés. The rhythm section is locked in, yet the grooves become predictable after a few tracks. Outside of the obvious standout, "La Grange," there are very few memorable hooks or moments that justify the album's legendary reputation. The production has a warm, raw quality that suits the band's style, but it also exposes how limited the songwriting feels. Many songs seem content to ride the same riff for several minutes without introducing compelling melodies, dynamic changes, or lyrical depth. Instead of sounding stripped back and authentic, much of the record comes across as uninspired and monotonous. I can appreciate its historical importance and the influence it had on Southern and blues rock, but influence alone doesn't make for an engaging listen. For me, Tres Hombres is an overrated album whose handful of strong moments are buried beneath a collection of forgettable, formulaic tracks.
Ambient 5: Music For Blowing Your Brains Out With a Shotgun
gratingly boring album. i really hope this wasn't included because of one song when so many more deserving albums could have been incmuded
I liked Hot, Blue & Righteous but other than that this sounded like many many many other albums I’ve listened to on this project and I didn’t like those or this agh.
No!! Never could get into this band.
Such a unique voice !! Fav song is ‘La Grange’.
very forgettable tbh. "la grange" is alright though. 1/5
Nič výnimočné...
Annoying voice. Only one good song
ZZ Top are one of my least favorite rock bands of all time. I can’t fault anyone for enjoying them, because there’s nothing truly *wrong* with them. I just find everything about their music and aesthetic to be totally lame and insufferable. Maybe that just makes me lame and insufferable, who knows? Uh huh huh huh huh.
Simultaneously terrible and 10 times better than the last ZZ Top album we had
I have no words to express my contempt and disinterest in ZZ Top, although having said that the bearded wonders have produced the two biggest surprises of my 1001 listening journey so far. The first was the unexpected lo-fi type quality to the vocals and guitar towards the end of the otherwise unspeakable and misogynistic “Legs” and the other was this LP, which turned out not to be the very very worst of the duplicates we’ve had to endure so far, proving itself to somehow be more listenable than the recent Led Zep one… FFS. One of the all time least deserved stars of all time. Tom.
Boring
Meh
couldn't get thru it Listened to 6 tracks and quit.sorry
I saw ZZ Top at Ashley for the Arts last year, but I am not a fan. It’s not my style of music and I don’t like the singer’s voice. I knew La Grange, but I don’t like the song.
not a fan
Some of the most generic blues rock the 70s has to offer.
No me llama la atención.
Impressive beards playing not so impressive tracks.
So repetitive. Lyrics felt like an afterthought attached to a bunch of guitar jamming.
there's few good songs. whole album is veryyy boring
I don't like ZZ Top. Never really have. I became their biggest foe when I popped my molly a bit too early at Bonnaroo 2013 waiting for Animal Collective and started rolling hard during ZZ Top's set. I learned that day that a ZZ Top show is the worst place to do Molly. I digress though. It's not about that, it's about how I've never enjoyed their bare bones Southern rock. It can be catchy, it can be smooth, but it's underwhelming.
not for me
THIS is why recording studios have locks on the doors. I can only assume this record’s inclusion is some kind of administrative error. Who do we tell?
ZZ down
It was fine, I got through about 5 songs but it all started to sound the same to me.
I thought I might enjoy this, however I didn’t…….
Didn’t get to listen to it maybe next time
Hmmm not for me

VV Shit
Middle of the road bluesy rock. Or maybe it's decent for that style - it's just not my jam.
Not for me
We're here for La Grange and La Grange only
0’5
Yawn.
Meh
it’s like they heard 1 blues song and went, “I could do that”
uuuuu
No!
Nope!
not my cup of tea 👍🏻
Nah
One song I liked
Meandering nonsense and La Grange. F
👎
Meandering nonsense and La Grange.
What a piece of garbage. How did this make the 1001 list? I've never like them, and this confirms it. The vocals sound constipated, and the instrumentation is generic. I had to end it during the penultimate song.
Not really the kind of music that I like. This bluesy rock is not bad and I know they are pretty popular but I just don't like their style, lyrics, or music. Seems pretty basic and uninspired to me. Would be great to listen to in a small dive bar though.
probably would not ever listen to this album again. not my cup of tea at all.
Sucks
mid
Not a fan of ZZ Top.
I didn't mind the one that started off like Slim Harpo (La Grange) but the rest of it was too pub band for me.
What a bloody awful mess. Three turds.
I found myself surprisingly bored listening to this album.
Dne
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Meh.
I really wish the list that this website is built around would be updated for modern music. It's going to be very annoying to listen to 800 albums from the 70's that I've already heard a dozen times. The occasional unknown work is what keeps me pushing forward though, cause I had never heard of Weather Report before and I absolutely loved that album. So anyway, onto more zz. I question how some of the albums end up in the list. I know that I am not the target audience but if you are going to curate a small-ish list of must listen albums then I expect no space to be wasted; that there isn't a bands full discography, only their best albums. And in this case, it feels like this album could easily be replaced by so many other things.
yeah naw dawg not feeling this at allllll
Beetje mid sorry
Nope
Didn't love it.
I must be missing the memo here. So boring and forgettable
too old
This music sounds like a monkey could play all the instruments. I might even be able.
BOR-ING. It's the same stuff 10 times, and I didn't like it the first time. This is the music your dad plays and says "they don't make music like this anymore." Not proving your case well, Pa.
No offense it is simply soulless to me
I do not like this. Blues without the soul, southern rock without the nuance. I'd give this 1.5 stars for a couple songs on the B side, but overall it's pretty annoying music. The Bottom Line: "Tres Hombres" by ZZ Top is a barbecue you wish you hadn't been invited to.
Oh just not my cup of tea
La Grange was always my least favorite song in Guitar Hero, and a whole album of that is my personal hell. I don’t know if it’s 1-star bad…let’s give it a generous 1.6/5
Every song in this album makes me feel like it’s the start of a movie where the hard-drinking Southern boy with the flag in his truck rear window accidentally kills a man in a drunken fist fight. Maybe it’s the age of the album, maybe it’s all been done to death now. Still no reason to listen to this in 2023. Tracks to check out: Master of Sparks
bullshot
Tänker inte ens skriva nåt. Dum musik
Honestly this was on but I just zoned out entirely
Didn’t listen all the through. Not me.
Omg it’s the Ford commercial song 😭 A lot of this record is giving car/home improvement commercial, but some of these groves are actually pretty good. However, I really don’t want to listen to this haha. Iconic..in a straight way 🤠 Really don’t want to hear this lol
I don’t care much for southern rock. I care even less for jam bands. This is the best and worst of both genres. Ew.
I'm just straight up not enjoying this.
uhmm... ok ? waiting for the bus - no <3 0/10 ok no im gonna stop here, this sounds like utter shit

Boring as fuck
