Reviews (page 8 of 8)
I'm not that into grunge. My favorite grunge/heavier 90s rock moments are the ones that sound least like the rest of grunge- a few punky Nirvana songs and the heavily Hendrix-influences on Yellow Ledbetter. I just don't get the appeal of overindulgent guitar solos (didn't people claim grunge was supposed to be the cure to Hair Metal?) and the other side of grunge is sad dudes with acoustic guitars making weird biblical references. Why should that be the defining sound of the 90s when Britpop and Hip Hop occupied the same space? Naturally my favorite brief snippets here were the ones most removed from the rest. The chorus on Look at You that sounds like Eddie Vedder singing lead vocals for a Jesus and Mary Chain song. The synthesizer on Sworn and Broken also kicks so much ass. But outside of those two aspects, it's just grunge and weird gospel allusions. I looked up the band and found that they opened for some key grunge acts in their peak years before this album, and also had members go on to play with Dinosaur Junior and Queens of the Stone Age and REM. Which is cool, but I think it shows maybe this band just wasn't greater than the sum of its parts.
Maybe I should’ve gave this a better chance but it’s just reminds me of every cheesy sounding 90s post grunge band ever so I didn’t really to listen too intently. As soon as I hear that wannabe Eddie vedder style of singing I tune out. Some of the songs are kinda catchy or have a good groove but I’m not interested in listening to much of this ever again. It sounds like an album that tried to keep coasting off the wave of grunge music but couldn’t find any interesting places to take the genre. Listening to this right after smashing pumpkins also made me realize that even though Billy corgan isn’t the best singer at least he went for his own style during this era of every rock singer sounding the same. This one was really well produced though so even though it wasn’t great it wasn’t unpleasant to listen to at all. 👍:look at you
Make my mind is pretty catchy…the rest not great.
Ok…Nothing stood out & I expected more!
Not a bad album at all but nothing really on here that stood out to me. Sounded a little too similar to other bands out at the time and didn’t really push anything on this album to the full extent I feel like. Still good songs and not a bad listen at all, just don’t think it’s one for this list.
definitely fits the category of "why did this make the list"
Good grunge album not sure it’s anything brilliant though would rather have the QOTSA albums on the list Mark was involved in over this.
Meh, I’m not really too into it. As with a lot of grunge, any emotion in the lyrics and singing gets drowned out by the noise/droning guitars. 4/10
Found this a bit repetitive.
I wanted to really hate this, purely through musical snobbery; US mid 90's guitar band, wailing, long hair. Not exactly Boy About Town, is it? Some of the melodies and song structures reminded my of Blur's 1997 self-titled album, y'know, the American one. Interesting. It still wasn't enough to win me over, but it wasn't the write off I was expecting.
Iets te erg rock voor moi
Sorry but nothing note worthy to this album at all for me. Not even sure why it's on the list. I should go look it up now to see if i'm wrong.
90s grunge/hard rock stuff generally bores me and this isn't really doing much to change that. It's fine and occasionally even goes as far as interesting but doesn't really wow me at all.
just ok
Never could really get into screaming trees. Felt this was a really below average offering. 1.5/5
Eeehh
Genuint smaklös produktion... feelar sångaren sku kunna va bra me ett annat band o synth solon i sworn & broken rippa... annars jättetråkigt
Nah
Very dull - wouldn’t listen again.
Started strong but faded out. Not too bad. Fave track - Halo of Ashes
I wasn't really feeling this album, but there were instrumentals and sounds on a few tracks that I found really interesting. I didn't care much for it overall.
Pleasant enough, but nothing really stood out to me. Blend of grunge, alt rock, and psych rock is a good idea, but the execution should be more memorable than this. Wouldn’t be upset if one of these songs came on, but I’m not reaching for this one on my own again.
"Make My Mind" was easily the best song on what was a pretty boring album. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything memorable either. This band seems to be one of those that the verse is better than the chorus, and that's not saying much.
I really have no feelings about this album. It feels like generic 90s rock
I like some of their work, saw them live once and have got a few later albums by Mark Lanegan. Dust... though, feels like they were aiming for a Led Zep version of grunge and just falls flat.
Needs more upset trees
Meh
God I just listened to this and now I can't even remember it except it was dull as dishwater.
Not entertaining
TBH, not too special...
Meh
Didn’t like it at all.
I really didn’t like this voice. He sang with zero effort and should get zero praise for it. The music was mediocre but the voice was the main part and hard to ignore.
I'm pretty sure I could/would have liked these guys better back in the day (and now) if the music wasn't accompanied by the sadly sorta quintessential 90s slacker vocals. Evan Dando esque. I often sound hypocritical to myself as I mostly don't care about vocals/lyrics but I find that I do on a negative level (e.g. if they're distracting or bring everything down) and Screaming Trees are a perfect example. Almost zero emotion, low register, low effort... just the entire package immediately dulls any potential edges for me. There's nothing *bad* here - the guitar sounds are really nice and clean; it's a great *sounding* rock album. It's just very boring with virtually every song carrying simple and safe chord progressions. I'll make note of the odd and out of nowhere keyboard solo in "Sworn and Broken" which was maybe the first thing that caught my ear but even that seemed forced - like someone was thinking "we've gotta break outta the mold" and slapped that on. A small step up from Pavement and nowhere near the better of the new crop of 90s rock artists that freshened up the entire genre. 3/10 2 stars.
Mediocre and forgettable
Grungy, forgettable
Eh.
This was variable but just about passable.
A bit weird. Not a favourite
Meh
Honk shoo mimimimimi Honk shoo mimimimimi
Första låtarna helt ok, blev sämre senare
Mediocre grunge. What's with the weird little keyboard solo on Sworn and Broken? Dying Days sure reminds me of Pearl Jam, no wonder it features Mike McCready. Nothing special or interesting here gets a charitable 2. It's not an abomination but not sure it should be on the list.
Well, I didn't hate this, but it really wasn't notable. Like stuff you'd hear on your local rock radio when it was feeling spicy and tired of other 90s rock.
Nondescript 90s white boys with angst.
johonkin nostalgiasuoneen tämä tehoaa. voisin laittaa taustalle soimaan uudestaankin, mutta tietynlainen grunge-proge-geneerisyys estää sen, että jaksais kummemmin keskittyä
not my cup of tea Could have been worse I guess
Overrated.
Considerably mid, but I don't want to flood the bottom of the ratings before I see more of the list. 3/10
Fomeque
The dull margins of proto-grunge. Mannered, and thus inconsequential.
Somehow both catchy and forgettable, might be that I left my grunge appreciation back in my teens. I'll be sure to give it another go at my next walk, when i focus better, but this didn't really speak to me personally.
I imagine that this album ranks pretty high for someone who likes this type of music. Unfortunately, that’s not me. There are some enjoyable parts though, Look At You in particular. I am curious if Queens of the Stone Age cite this band as an inspiration. Aspects of the production are very familiar especially on songs like the Witness. Things like the vocal melody on Traveler remind me a lot of Josh Homme.
I did not like this album. It honestly made me wonder about the criteria for making it onto this list. I don't think I had heard this one before, but I know their previous two albums quite well. I went back and listened to them afterwards and I think Sweet Oblivion is by FAR the superior album. Although maybe that's just the nostalgia talking... Anyway, this record is really pretty bad. There are a few decent tracks, but it's almost like you can hear that grunge was already on its way out when this was released. And I appreciate them trying to incorporate some psych influences but it just doesn't work. "Traveller" is a very sad Pink Floyd imitation, and the weird insertion of sitar and hand drums and harpsichord on other tracks doesn't sound cool, it just sounds, well, weird. I nearly gave this a 1 but my grungy little pre-teen heart wouldn't let me. Also I am saving that for The Eagles.
eh....
I braced myself because I don't really want to hear trees scream. But, it was strangely listenable: droning guitar, subdued voice. I guess this is grunge? I can't distinguish too many songs from each other, so it's a bit boring in that way. I see how this could have made way for the emo rock of the 2000/10s so for that I'm grateful.
Not bad, decent music, chill vibes
fede muito
Not really what I had in mind for the top 1001 albums
For listeners of 90's alternative radio (already a limited demographic), Screaming Trees would have been a palette cleanser between the songs you actually wanted to hear.
Not objectionable in any form. Nothing that suggests I would ever listen to them again.
Meh
Good songs, forgettable album
Det var inte så dåligt som jag trodde? men samtidigt ej så bra..
The beginning didn't really suck me in. It just felt like mediocre hard rock. And then it just continued. Nothing stood out, nothing fell flat. The guitar-work was good, but it felt repetitive, and the vocals did nothing to impress. Felt lifeless.
Meh
Halo of Ashes
While there are some ok tunes on here, nothing stood out to me. I honestly found it somewhat forgettable.
I didn’t really care for it, torn between 2 and 3 Fav was Sworn and Broken It got a bit better towards the end
It droned on and on and on.
Was ok
I’ve never been into grunge, this album explains why. Dull. The only song that caught my attention was Look At You. I liked the lyrics on that one. The rest can get in the bin.
nah
Grunge, 90’er rock, udmærket
Pas pore pour le genre rock je me demande quelle annee mais ca sonne tres 90
Gave me a country vibe. Wasn't bad but personally was not for me
Pretty generic 90s music. It wasn't bad, I actually liked the riffs and guitars a lot. Musically it was great. But the singing had nothing worth listening to.
meh. It's a so-so record from the grunge band that never really broke. I was really surprised at how well reviewed this was at the time.
It's fine. The last track was the most interesting. 2.5/5.
It wasn't doing much for me, but look at you is quite lovely, bored, resigned love songs do it for me. Then fairly dull again.Sworn and Broken is quite nice again. I'm getting the feeling this isn't the most exciting band. They suffer from the same mid tempo chug that turns me off Oasis. Everything is quite ploddy. Not bad, just... Unexciting.
I feel bad for Gen X for only having the most boringest rock and roll to listen to.
Rock modesto y sin alma. Por eso prefiero a Mark Lanegan cuando está con los Soulsavers. Solo llama la atención la percusión exótica de los dos últimos minutos del disco.
Meh
Meh, was fine but not terribly engaging for me
Was ok, bit boring.
Some of the most boring parts of the 90’s
78. Dust -Screaming Trees 10 tracks. I wanted to like this grunge-fest but I just couldn't get on with the Lanegan vocals. I quite liked some of the tracks, (vibing both U2 & Stereophonics), but just not his voice. It honestly sucked almost all of the enjoyment out of it. 2/5
Maybe this guy is a legend, but his music is boring, voice is very average, not sure why people are listening to him...
Predominately blah. Maybe you had to be there.
Meh. It's no wonder that this band never hit the grunge scene like others. Not much variety to their sound.
I only half listened to this one yesterday. My first impression was that the singer's voice was irritating and the music was painfully boring. I thought it would be polite to have a second listen but whenever I opened Spotify I would grunt and close it. I just couldn't convince myself to spend another 45 min. with these brothers.
This was a pretty ok album. For grunge it was better than average though and I prefer them to say Soundgarden or Pearl Garden, probably because they’re not as overplayed. Lousy cover art though.
Нормально
At times the singer’s voice annoyed me (Halo of Ashes). On other songs (Look At You, Traveler) it is OK. I don’t hear anything noteworthy on this album other than the sitar. I powered through, but next time I hear it I’m turning this album off.
eh
So much love for Lanegan, but the Trees fall flat for me...
Nothing special. Not bad, but I wouldn't put it in any albums to die for list.
Is alright, not ever gonna set the world on fire but pretty enjoyable
less then average 90s rock
Yikes
Yuk
these guys are the hidden gems of the grunge era... they say. lol.
I didn’t hate this as much as I thought I was going to. I guess that’s something. But this was still a dud. Didn’t get it at all.
Look... this album derailed my whole project... It took me 4 days to listen to because it's so painfully boring and there's no situation that called for this album. Walking, working, grocery shopping, I had to turn it off each time because it made every situation worse. This album probably doesn't deserve the hate I'm giving it, but I blame all the badness in my life over the last 4 days on this.
Not my favorite
I got excited when an album by the Screaming Trees popped up, because I do love the 90's, especially grunge era rock, and this is one I haven't heard before. Unfortunately, most of Dust is disappointingly bland. There are bands that can benefit from better quality production, but Screaming Trees is not one of them. It now appears Screaming Trees is actually to blame for the post-grunge trash that came out in the late 90's early 2000's, because Dust seems like patient zero. Uninspired songwriting and lyricism and passionless performance. Highlights: "Halo of Ashes" Having heard other Screaming Trees albums prior to this one, I can say this is their weakest so far. Incredibly lame and forgettable. Probably the most disappointing listen of this project. Feel free to leave it out of the next book.
Not my cup of tea
Very melodramatic. Reminiscent of queen which is to say its overproduced and nonsensical
a completely unremarkable album across virtually every metric beyond its baffling inclusion in this particular list. these vocals sound like gravel and broken glass. there is no standout track or notable distinction beyond the rest of the chaff in the 90s chasing the high of the seattle sound with seemingly zero innovation on the genre or creative expansion. it's firmly derivative and this might as well be white noise for 45 minutes. do i give points for baseline technical competency of playing an instrument? i don't think i do.
Tuning should not be optional
Gave me hope, but jesus fukken christ
Honestly just boring, and the music sucks generally. Couple moments where they break out of that confinement and play something more interesting but it's generally buried into a little of each song than having a single standout song. Hence, 1*.
🥱
I genuinely could not listen to this… the monotonous vocals drove me batty.
what is remarkable about this album? Nirvana’s popular but at least they actually sound grunge. “Dust” sounds like Screaming Trees shop for grunge clothing at Forever 21. their first track immediately lowered my expectations for the rest of the album. I did like their choice of percussion bookended within in the last track “Gospel Plow” - it provided a nice contrast to their own Seattle “grunge” sound and lyricism. the rest of the album remains blah.
Nope, don't like it. not really at all..
No bueno
1. halo - 1 2. knouu - 1 3. look - 1.5 4. dayz - 1 5. Mind - 1 6. Broken - 1.5 7. Witness - 0 8. Traveler - 1.5 9. Dime - 0 10. Gospel - 1
How does an album as generic and safe as this make this list?
Completely unremarkable. Not sure why this is on here?
This album is odd to me. I like it from an instrumental standpoint, it’s got this cool light grunge-esque feel throughout. Simple drums, lots of crunchy powerchords, very basic root-note basslines, and it all works very well. My issue with this album is the vocal style doesn’t match the music to me at all. The lead singer sounds disinterested and bored, and not at all in a good way. It sounds like a dad-rock band playing covers at the local bar, from a vocal standpoint, and I just can’t get over that feeling. We’re on a real run of uninspiring albums lately, but this one takes the cake strictly thanks to those terrible vocals. I won’t listen to this again.
Someone liked their music.
The only thing I can say that was good about this album was that it sounded grungy. I like grunge, but this just didnt have any appeal to me. No songs stood out. The entire listening experience felt really dragged out
Alternative/ rock? Not crazy about the music.
Nope
So like worse Incubus
It's like a watered down version of Radiohead. So very meh.
Irrelevante
reminds me of U2 and im not a fan.
This was a grand pile of mediocrity delicately sprinkled with a hardy dose of meh.
Uneventful, generic and boring. I can see some appeal but it left me wanting more. A few songs stand out for progressive instrumentation but still a feign attempt. Some songs even sound like a facsimilie of what else is on the album.
No
gradually gets boring
Noch so eine dieser austauschbaren Grunge-Bands.
ya solo por la portada next
Not my jam
Meh. This is pretty typical 90s alternative, without any real standout songs.
slabizna
ok - aber ich könnte auch ohne leben.
Not for me
Ziemlich weich gespült
Nicht wirklich cool und musikalisch
Horrible.
Bisschen cookie cutter nichts sticht besonders raus, Mix teilweise einfach ein Brei.
1.5 Schmerzhaft belanglos Will viel, liefert nicht
I just don’t understand the inclusion of this one. It’s a good representation of generic grunge but…it just doesn’t scratch any itch. I wanted it to be something that it wasn’t.
Meh, sounds like generic mid-90s rock
This album feels like a grunge ripoff
Wasn't really feelin' the vibes
The name made me think they might be a bit more punky, and I imagined them to be more of an 80s goth band. Didn't mind this too much but didn't really 'get' it either. Grungy inoffensive rock music. Nothing stood out much, save recognising Lanegan's voice from his later solo stuff (of which I am not really a fan either).
Solid but terribly outdated alt-rock from the 90‘s. Lame.
This is pretty un-interesting mid-90's rock. Like it's fine, but not exciting. Most of the tracks would work well over a montage of teenagers roller blading or some shit.
Not impressed at all.
Iha paska! En saanu mitään irti tästä. Huonoo grungee… 1/5
More like whispering trees. Turned it off by the 5th song. Very disappointed in this one probably would never listen again.
If this is one of the 1001 best albums of all time, then I feel like the stuff I've recorded is solidly in the 2000s.
Didn't like. Droney. Samey. Boring
Not very interesting
pretty shit album honestly, only song I liked was Traveler, that song gets an 8/10 the rest of the album is 2/10
eh
