Reviews (page 7 of 8)

Final thoughts: odd choice for the 1001; a group at the peak of their technical abilities coinciding with their influential and creative nadir. Most tracks are polished and enjoyable but ultimately forgettable. a grunge band that tried their best to transition into post-grunge/alternative radio-friendly rock but came up admirably short ******************************************************************************* --Halo of Ashes...nice heaviness. Mark Lanegan, my baritone brother, sounds good here --All I Know...decent but standard mid-90s alt-rock --Look at You...Mark shines again. Don't always love post-grunge ballads but this works --Dying Days...see "All I Know". Lanegan channeling Layne Staley here --Make My Mind...these guys know how to compose a radio-ready rock tune, but they lack something. I want more...teeth? --Sworn and Broken...didn't love the beginning but we inject some much appreciated high-end synthage into the mix. this builds well --Witness...meh --Traveler...a psychedelic diversion. at least we're mixing things up --Dime Western...another okay start with an impressive build --Gospel Plow...now we're getting weird. great closer

Pretty... unremarkable. Feels like watered-down grunge

The only Screaming Trees song I'd heard before was I Nearly Lost You, which I like way more than anything on this album. It wasn't a bad album, but not one I'll probably return to.

2 or 3 ?

Like dust this album just kind of sits there not really doing much. Will say screaming trees feels like the wrong name for this band.

Didn't actively hate it but didn't enjoy any of it

Classic alternative. Had no idea they sang "All I Know." Not sure I needed to listen to this album before I died though.

. Niet noteworthy maar zou het niet afzetten als het op staat.

Why this Screaming Trees album? They put out some really good music but this is not their best, not even close. This sounds like every mid 90s alternative rock album and really sounds more like Collective Soul than Screaming Trees

Some good safe rock music. A few songs really stand out with great music and lyrics. The others seem like pretty easy listens. This would be a great album to listen to when you don't want to get distracted by the music. It's not something that I would put on just to listen to.

not for me

I don’t dislike this album but a lot of the songs sound the same

Kinda shit

I was slightly disappointed by this album. I thought its going to be better

A perfectly fine rock album.

Pretty boring, I thought. Unoffensive though.

It’s fine. Was never a huge Screaming Trees guy…

It’s totally fine and moved me not at all. Didn’t bother me, wasn’t grating, just did not hit any spots or strike any chords with me. Mid-90s rock soup.

What a mildly interesting album.

It’s fine, but standard late-90s indie rock

Nothing notable here hah

supposedly this entry has a more jazz/blues influence to it but I cant locate any of that. Its all so basic, feels like background music in a made for tv movie. They sound like a Tragically Hip cover band that put out some original songs and they miss the mark. Also it seems like the vocals werent mixed properly, they seem so seperate from the rest of the music.

Gggggggeneric! So uninteresting

Nothing moved me, Bob.

29/1001 First listen. I have never heard screaming trees before but it does take me right back to 1996 only this sounds like what AI would produce if I asked it to make music from that year. It sounds like a stew of many other older bands. The Canadian band The tea party did this too but more effectively. I don’t listen to them either. This isn’t going to grow on me. 3/10

I wanted to like this more due to my love of Lanegan’s work with QOTSA but found it got a little bit boring and didn’t really have anything that really captured my interest.

Pretty average

Gester bim lose vo Tree by Dusty Scream isch mer gar nüd hänge blibe, und hüt hani kei motivation gha zums nomal lose. Ich denke das isch zemegfasst so öppe 2 Staubchörner

1001 Mediocre 90s Alt Albums to Listen to Before You Die. I enjoyed “Look At You” and “Traveler” but mostly I would just prefer to listen to Zeppelin or Dinosaur Jr instead.

Gubbegrunge. Hvorfor har dette hatt påvirkning på musikkverden? Ondt Blod har flere streams enn dette søvnmidlet.

Some of it was okay some of it was annoying. 2.5/5

I've never heard of this band or album. After listening, I can say that it's fine but it's still not the unexpected and delightful masterpiece I am waiting for from this project. Anyway, yes this is fine. It has some cool riffs but then it veers into sounding very Britpop - so it fits right in on this list. I recognised Sworn and Broken when it came on, and I went "Oh, right, this song is the reason the album is on the list". It's not a very compelling reason, though, in my opinion.

Has vibes of a poor man's queen's of the stone age. The vocal isn't particularly strong. Not sure why it's on this list

I did not find this album interesting or enjoyable in any way. The sound and musical style was reminiscent of many bands that have done it better.

Nothing sticks. It's not horrendous but you can see the influence on those crappy grunge-lite bands that came after.

The music was good and the singing was ok. It just needed something to give it more excitement perhaps.

Well, I guess it’s okay. I don’t love the vocalist and I’m not super excited by the instrumentals either. It’s not terrible, but definitely not something I would choose.

Ganz cool, aber irgendwie auch nichts besonderes.

A couple of good songs

Not bad. Gave me a bit of a Soundgarden vibes. Nothing stood that hard too me.

I'm not sure where Wikipedia gets off calling this hard rock or psychedelic rock. Honestly grunge is even a bit of a stretch here... I'd say if anything this is alternative soft-rock with a gooey grunge core. Most of this just doesn't connect with me. Like it isn't outright "bad" so much as just completely uninspired feeling. The lone standout in my mind is Dying Days. Otherwise, I just couldn't make it through... So for me this is perfect 2 territory.

I don’t know, a bit boring. Heard better stuff from this era and this genre. Between a 2 and a 3 for me

Why include this album in the list? It's not the band's best effort.

This was well and truly just fine. Nothing noteworthy or interesting - just bland, inoffensive 90s rock.

It's fine. Very 90s. Not my style even thought I grew up in the 90s...

This was weird. Grungy, but not too grungy. Rocky, but not too much. The singer's voice is good, but not enough to pull me in to want to pay attention

Grunge war nie mein Genre. Zu breitbeinig, nimmt sich zu ernst. 2/5

Doesn't touch me in any case. Just Dust (=noise?)

Shoutout Ellensburg Washington where this band is from, one of the biggest drive thru cities on WA roadtrips. I was so hopeful after hearing the opening song. It reminded me a bit more of the Midwest grunge/emo of Hum more than anything out of the PNW. But I can’t say this album blew me away, or anything close to that. “Sworn and Broken” was a super interesting listen though, as the singer starts out sounding strikingly like Kurt Cobain, then the song develops to the point where it’s played out with a keyboard sine wave solo! Very unique for this genre. Then the closing “Gospel Plow” was pretty cool for how ambitious its composition choices are. Memorable intro and outro. Everything else kinda blurred by in a flannel, torn jeans blur. Those standout songs were really good though. Soft 3? Strong 2?

Meh. I don't really get this as "grunge" and lumping them in with Nirvana and early Pearl Jam or Soundgarden. This is just basic alt rock, to me. It was fine, but completely unmemorable.

quintessentially 90s (derogatory)

forgot to rate this one when i listened — i remember liking it more than expected but not very much

Not their best.

Sounds like the 1990s. Grunge, but shiny and crisp.

It's ok. Like any rock album from the 90s: 3-5 minutes of rocking + solo + chorus and whabam, you get a 2 star album.

Like a more boring version of Bon Jovi. Meh, 2*

Easy listening but not for me.

Surprisingly bland, like an open mic night band....

Most turbomid 90's rock album

Really didn't do anything for me

Simply boring.

A somewhat innovative statement - I haven't heard sitar incorporated this fluently before, for instance - this record is no less a nondescript event. On a ballads like 'Look At You' or 'Sworn and Broken,' which are melodically satisfying and forceful, or a heavy hitter like 'Dying Days,' cliché lyrics and pointless vocal power corrode what is otherwise convincing songwriting: 'And when I look at you, I've got a second chance'; 'Winter's setting in again / And it feels like the end is near'; 'All these dying days / I walk the ghost town / Used to be my city.' I'm not looking for literary masterpieces, but these bits of saccharine folly can only detract from what could have been a solid product. Besides, it's for Christendom, of which I am not.

Rating: 2 Notable songs: N/A Not my cup of tea. For the 90s it's quite fitting but nothing special.

This album was up and down for me. Some good stuff, but mostly meh stuff. 2.5/3

As beige as beige can be. Little wonder I’d never heard of them.

Ok 2/5

Maybe I’m not seeing the significance here, but this album struck me as incredibly boring and sorta melancholic.

Jag försökte fatta grejen för 30 år sedan, jag har lika svårt att bry mig idag.

Verbal Meme: Top Frame: "Dust is inspired by psychedelic, punk, folk and blues music" Bottom Frame: "So that was a fucking lie"

Was pleasantly surprised to hear some good alt music here, but nothing that stood out too much

hmpf, keine gute Phase zurzeit beim Album Generator. Dieses Album hat mir auch nicht gefallen -.- Werde nicht warm mit dieser Musikrichtung

Feels extremely one-note, uninspired, and doesn’t move the needle at all for me. Nice grunge to disassociate to while driving, I guess?

Definition of meh, won't turn it off if it comes on the radio, but I'll never put it on.

Not my style of rock. It’s okay and certainly the first track peaked my interest for its atypical sound but otherwise mwa

I had never heard screaming trees before, beyond hearing their name a couple times. This was good but it definitely didn't elevate to the level of the best 90s groups. Lack an edge a little bit, almost like it toed on grunge but didn't jump in

Listens: 1 Stand out tracks: Vaguely Christian or at least religious. Mention of halos, angels, the lord, miracles, gospel and other religious influences. Not particularly interested in Christian or pseudo-Christian rock. The psychedelic influences however, are interesting. They elevate the quality of the music, distinguishing the band from otherwise being another typical grunge rock band of the 90s. The use of... I'm not sure if there's an organ, harpsichord or a sitar involved, as well as hand cymbals evoke other influences like the Beatles later work or the early Dead.

Pretty nonchalant grunge album. Fits in with the 90s scene but def not a standout like other acts but were certainly influenced by them (i.e., Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam). Overall sounded pretty generic other than the finisher "Gospel Plow" which was top track. Not a complete flyover album but if it were in my vinyl collection, I would "Dust" it off every once in a while for a spin. The band name is a bit lame too...2.08.

Alternative rock. It was fine, but not really anything more than that. It was reminding me of another band that I can’t place, and it’s still irritating me that I can’t think of it.

It’s not bad, it’s not good, it’s just bland. Favourite track: Dying Days. Other than that I was quite bored

2/5 this has half decent songs, but it honestly lacks some substance, variation, or a good level of cohesion (both within and between tracks). It feels like the same song repeated for the duration with an enjoyable but kinda “full of nothing” rhythm. Also I feel like each song is trying to subvert my expectations of where it’s going next.

Don’t think this should’ve been on here. Interesting album but a forgettable album

another boring and poorly represented grunge era album. can't see myself listening to this again

Bland grunge-lite. Sounded more like adult contemporary music that happened to use fuzzed out guitars because of the era. Nothing offensive about it, just boring.

Not heard the music of this band before. It was okay, but nothing outstanding.

Try as I might (and I'm not trying that hard), I can't think of much to say about Dust. For all its energy and pleasing organ sounds, for however many variations on She Said She Said, it isn't a patch on K by Kula Shaker. 2 For all the time and effort that clearly went into making it there isn’t much to say about this album. It is eager to please its listeners but irritatingly so, like an overattentive waiter. Amid the smug smorgasbord of sitar solo, harmonised organ solo, mellotron riff, celebrity guest spot, cello, arch electric piano break, oversweet backing vocals etc… is an overwhelming sense that the band is smiling all the time. That may be the crux of why this is a thoroughly mediocre record - it is all light and no darkness. Everything carefully worked out and nothing felt. Everything offered and nothing risked. The melodies are pleasant and the lyrics about nothing much. No instrument is played (or recorded) with any character or distinction. The mix is oppressively benign. Another notable album of carefully wrought blues rock was released a couple of months after Dust - TOOL’s ‘Aenima’. It is an album I thought of several times while listening to Dust and the comparison elicited only pity for the Screaming Trees’ album. Kula Shaker’s ‘K’ came out in between them. It’s better than this too. 2/5

Poor mans Pearl Jam

Not my cup of tea

There’s that fucking sitar again! Shankar!!!!! I don’t think I need anymore straightforward rock/grunge. There may have been more of an appetite for this in 1996, but I’m good. They mixed it up a bit on the second half. Cool reading up on the band and their other projects. Heard a little Queens of the Stone Age and turns out one of these guys, Lanegan, was in the band for 15 years. Also collaborated with… PJ Harvey.

I’m a pretty bad judge of this lane of grunge, but this felt unremarkable.

Not sure what to think

Had a good time with this!

This felt really slow and didnt have anything that really stood out, kind of reminded me of bad radiohead.

It's fine

It’s ok 90’s grunge/rock. Not sure why I’d need to listen to it before dying though.

This was pretty bland. At times some of the instrumental work was interesting and a few times I was enjoying the vocals a bit but it never really added up into anything that told me it was a necessary listen and should be on the list. I doubt I'll listen to it again.

This is very 1990s The stereo mixing is pretty good. I like the vocals for the most part. Sworn and Broken had a kind of cool touch of a country sound and then a section kind of like The Who. Overall I find it pretty bland and probably won't think of it again.

Smooth, even, accomplished…okay, but who in the hell needs accomplished grunge? Super dull, and totally missing the point. Sounds like a pretty good band saw a lot of their compatriots making a ton of money, and somebody convinced them this was how they were gonna do that too.

A few nice melodies, but such a grungy and dingy sound. I kinda want to like this, but not much memorable here unfortunately. Best song: All I Know

My line between 2 and 3 has blurred so heavily. Idt I liked this album but I enjoyed parts of it. I felt like their lyrics were purposefully repetitive, which is fine for a song or two but when it’s throughout the album it loses some luster. Like it’s meant to convey a deep emotion or thought that’s resonating but if in the course of 12 songs you have that several times it kind of diminishes the power of it. I enjoyed the music behind the lyrics more than the lyrics themselves though. Glad I listened but likely won’t return.

nothing special to me. this kind of reminded me of a bit of Nirvana, a smidge of Radiohead, and some pure 90's sound. I think my favorite track was Sworn and Broken, the slower acoustic song. I think that one really allowed their artistry to show, instead of warping it through a generic psychedelic sound. Wouldn't be mad if more Screaming Trees came up... but this album doesn't really make me want to search through their discography.

I actually had multiple songs that I liked in terms of the melodies and rifts. The biggest thing holding this band back is the lead singer. The voice was whiny, but not in the endearing Tom Delonge way, more so friendly uncle with a sinus infection type way.

Prima niet bijzonder. Ben dit vorige week al weer vergeten

Nothing to add, kind regards.

Bastante poquito, es como un grunge con soda, medio pop qsy. Bastante verga.

Not bad. Feels like just another album, and I don't understand why it's so special.

This is fine... I guess. Just not for me. The album cover is how I looked when listening to this.

It’s ok.

Totally unmemorable

Forgettable

Forgettable. Boring. Generic. So many albums that sound just like this on this list.

For a long time, I thought this was what Phish sounded like – grunge-flavored psychedelic rock. And I definitely like this more than Phish. What Screaming Trees actually is, though, at least on Dust – grunge-flavored ‘90s U2. And I like this less than ‘90s U2. Not by a lot, but its verboseness and genre-blending does insist upon itself a lot more forcefully. It’s fine while it’s on, until it keeps going, and then it’s not fine at all. And the most obnoxious parts are very obnoxious. But mostly, Dust is forgettable.

Kinda surprised to find this album on here. No real hits; I guess All I Know is the most famous song on this one, but does not compare to Nearly Lost You (far and away their most well-known track). It's not a bad album, but there's nothing remarkable about it either. To me, it's just another of the dozens of bands that put Led Zeppelin through a Nirvana filter. 2.5⭐️

Such promising titles and cover art, what a disappointment it's such mediocre sounding music, oh well . . .2 stars

This is noise rock in my opinion. Typical for the sound in the world at that time. I actually thought that annoying bitch from Queens of the Stone Age was in this band so I hated it at the start. These guys, at times, sound like Spacehog but aren’t as good. All in all, the vocals can be slightly drowned out but the music flows, every song seems to almost be at that breakthrough point where it could have been a radio hit but they just lack one more undefinable ingredient. I don’t hate this, I don’t love it but I do appreciate it. Choice cut: Look at You

Not for me

2 not great

Dust by the Screaming Trees shows a bit of range within a soft rock genre. The opener is an eastern-tinged goth rock à la The Church, and they switch to more of a Cracker psych-rock sound on the single "All I Know." It's decent soft rock, but remains a peer amongst lesser bands at the time, like Soul Asylum, the Wallflowers, or Dogstar. Every song is trying for a single, using common chord progressions, easy melodies, and slick production. They would do well to play more instrumental parts outside of just strumming a wall of chords. It's too middle-of-the-road and predictable for me. "Sworn and Broken" is a good example of how they can do straight forward rock correctly; the melodies and harmonies are better, and they move the solo to an organ to add more variety to their sound. "Traveler" is my favorite here. More lush, and finally breaking from the standard chord progressions and arpeggios.

I was never really into Screaming Trees back in the 90s. To me this album has sort of a generic straight forward, it's ok type of rock sound. I was familiar with All I Know. Nothing on this album particularly jumped out at me as amazing and I did wonder why it was on the list. It's not a bad album but nothing on it really blew me away.

Лучшая песня - Halo of Ashes.

I enjoyed this and it's a perfectly good rock record but it's not something I'd be that interested in properly immersing myself in.

This one disappointed me. I've always read about Mark Lanegan as this underrated alternative icon, so I was eager to listen to more Screaming Trees music. Unfortunately, I found this album very boring.

I went into this with little expectations having not really heard a screaming trees song before. I found it to be mediocre grunge. There is nothing good or stand out on this album Favourite song: All I know Least favourite everything was a little bit bland Album artwork: nuts cover, not one you would hang up at home

平庸的摇滚乐

Kinda just passed by a little, wasn't too into it but seemed ok. Will I listen to again: 5%

This was done, but forgettable. I don’t see how this merits inclusion on the list as it had virtually no influence on its genre.

Lacks the promised screaming.

Grunge has never been my thing, was going back and forth between 2 or 3 throughout this. One song would have some nice riffs or a catchy melody in the chorus, then the next one would bore you to death. Meh, give it a 2.

Låter som ångest känns

Helt okej album, men tyckte inte det var så kul o lyssna på Bästa låt: All I know

pretty kinda dull

At best mediocre alternative Rock. Apparently that's called grunge.

Meh. Nothing burger of an album 2

Middling 90’s rock. “Gospel Plow” was fun.

Instantly forgettable dirge power chord grunge rock.

Not that bad

An OK album from an obscure band. An indie-rock feel to this record. Nothing to hard and heavy. Some good tunes and lyrics are above average. Still, I am not convinced this album should be on the list of "must listens". Good songs include "All I Know" and "Traveller".

This was so disappointingly mundane and boring. Nothing exciting presents itself on this album.

Talk about a meh album. Nothing here to write home about - inoffensive pseudo grunge-folk.

Maybe you are walking around a ghost town that used to be your city because everyone moved away because your band sucks so bad. Like, the entire population of a major metropolitan area thought, “Ehhh, I’ve got a good job here, and friends, and I bought my house right at the beginning of the pandemic, so I’ve got a great interest rate that I will never be able to get again until there is some kind of major economic downturn, and my kids are right in the middle of the school year and so it would be really hard on them to move right now, but fuck it, I can’t live in the same city as Screaming Trees with their rustic hard rock, equally informed by heavy metal and folk. I mean, I don’t go to their concerts or interact with them or their music in any way, but just knowing that I live in the same city as they do is intolerable to me on a visceral level so I’m going to have to move away from here.” And now during all these dying days you walk through the ghost town that used to be your city. I mean, maybe you enjoy walking, and it is good for you, but you could use other means of transportation. I assume that all the city busses were abandoned, heavy machinery, ATV’s and dirt bikes and what not. You could just hop on any of them and drive around the ghost town that used to be your city. I bet that would be fun. Plus there’s no traffic! Because it’s a ghost town. Because everyone moved away. Because of how bad you suck.

Little known fact: Dust is named after what it was meant to collect.

'Traveler' didn't feel like it belonged on the track! But it was a nice break from the rest of the hard rock album.

This album was fine, but blends into the rest of the genre. There is some pretty decent instrumentation, but I don't think the album goes above and beyond anywhere. Honestly, I'm not really sure why we needed to hear this album. Best Songs: All I Know, Witness Worst Songs: Sworn and Broken, Dime Western

Shades of Nirvana and Primal Scream, mixed with a generic 90s guitar sound.

A bit boring

Just nothing that felt worth listening to. I can see how it may be influential but nothing interesting enough.

Fine but unremarkable

More enjoyable that I had expected it would be (I was worried about nooo not another random 90s rock adjacent album) but still likely not to return

Unremarkable and forgettable

I don't get it. It's music, but I couldn't tell you a single thing about it. I've probably heard some of these tracks before, but it's impossible to be sure. I liked the first track on the album, then everything greyed together.

It was okay, don't think I will listen to it again but still pleasant. I'm a bit torn between a 2 and 3, so I will give it a 2.5 / 5 rating.

Every song sounds the same not my thing

i'm not the biggest fan of grunge, but even factoring that in, i wasn't excited about this album. i don't think this is a terribly noteworthy album as far as the grunge genre goes. granted, grunge is one of my oversights in my musical knowledge, but i didn't hear much interesting about screaming trees' dust. the choice to play the sitar seems unusual for an album coming out in 1996? not that indian instruments are conventional or standard in western music, but it's an instrument that was used much more in the late sixties and early seventies. still, a cool way to open and close an album.

I've been dealing with gastritis, meaning I can only eat bland food with no spices. Last night I grilled some chicken with just salt and added some unsalted, plain white rice. It was the most bland meal I've ever had. Somehow, this album managed to be even more bland.

Unexciting but not bad musicians

Not very interesting. Songs lack quite a bit of energy. 2/5 Won’t listen again

Failed to grab me, of it’s time

I love grunge, but I never got into this group. Time to see what they’re all about I guess. And yeah, that seems about right - there’s nothing standout here. It’s basic. Nirvana, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam all did it better, harder, and grittier than these guys. Also, the 44 minute listening time felt way longer! I found myself thinking “alright, this has gotta be close to the last track now” and I was only halfway through. I just didn’t enjoy slogging through this one. Not for me.

I had liked only one of their songs when they were at their best

Pioneers of Grunge? Ok, maybe. Kinda goes to show how bad that genre was. Snooze of an album.

I'm not a fan of this music. I thought the album was tedious. I find the guitar crescendos annoying. Not my taste.

It's hard to have strong feelings about this one. Screaming Trees is a name that's familiar to me as a child of the 90s, and yet despite being widely listened, I struggle to come up with words to describe their sound. They existed in a space carved out for them by other, better bands. Their music exists solely on 90s grunge playlists as padding between better songs. The fact that this album came out in 1996 as we were already entering a post-grunge world, while still peddaling a dreary and lacklustre sound, places this firmly in the realm of mediocrity. No one NEEDS to listen to this.

Not my cup of tea, but there were a couple catchy songs.

not even the bands best album.

Perfectly fine indie. Wouldn't have minded dieing without hearing this to be honest.

Nothing of note here, rather flat, nothing stands out and grabs your attention. Equally nothing makes you switch off or skip, just bland. Perhaps I'm not in the right mood?

I really only knew mark lanegan from his work with QOTSA. This album is a lot more hopeful sounding/less dark than I expected based on that work as well. It fits with the aesthetic of 90's hard rock and his vocals are very good but nothing stands out besides a couple cool moments of guitar and nice choruses.

Not my favorite. Album art is sick though.

Way better '90s rock albums out there

It didn’t grab me.

At least it was better than yesterday's album. I thought it was bad but unmemorably so. Was just waiting for the album to end. Instrumentals at some parts were not that bad though.

Wasn’t feeling it felt like b sides to a movie soundtrack.

Ist okay, aber iwie belanglos, einfallslos.

It's fine, not really my thing, a lot of 90s grunge is kinda ass, sorry

found It repetitive but not so bad could've lasted less, lot of repetitive lyrics and sound. The Songs are not bad in any way but the album Is extremely boring and i don't think i Will return to this record often best songs: all i know, sworn and broken, witness, gospel plow 2 stars

Look At You //

Easy to listen to, but not to spectacular.

Not a huge grunge fan and this is meh grunge at best.

When it started, I thought it would be alright, but man, this really dragged. I mean, there's some good parts, but none of the songs fully grabbed me and most of it was boring. My favourite song was Halo of Ashes.

Didn’t care about this album. There wasn’t anything that I could point out as being bad at all, but none of it was very interesting. I didn’t hate it. I didn’t love it. Completely indifferent. 5/10 Top 3: 1. Make My Mind 2. Sworn and Broken 3. Dying Days

nah. ain’t the worst but didn’t enjoy any of it.

King of bland. Not overwhelming or underwhelming, just whelmed. Definitely sounds like they are were trying to be in that 90's PNW grunge sound with a little Janes Addiction in there. But ultimately it feels like it's lacking a soul or something to make it special.

Not my taste

Grew on me but not enough to think it deserves to be on this list. Middle of the road 2.5 rounding down for the cover.

Something had to be the inspiration for all the famous dad rock out there. Didn't do it for me but they have their sound and this probably came out exactly how they wanted

Lite småtråkigt.

Can tell this is mid 90s music. Didn’t really care for any of the songs. Some did have good instrumentals.

im happy to have listened to it, 10 years+ after my grunge phase. no wonder i missed it. parts of it sounded like if tom petty started a """garage"""" band in the 90s. bored me. perhaps another album or theirs would do it for me?

repetitivo

bland fine?? kinda generic grungy rock

Southern grunge? Or just a normal southern rock with some metal elements? Whatever it is, it doesn't work. Songs are rather boring, I can't see anything appealing in it. Let's just move on.

Have you listened to Tea Party? These guys are a shitty version of them. 2 stars

Overall a very disappointing listen. A couple strong, unique tracks in the back half aren’t enough to save it. Fairly cookie-cutter 90s alt sounds and released far enough in the decade that they don’t get any points for innovating.

It was ok. Not a stand out album for me.

p773, 1996. 2.5 stars Average grunge band with some OK tunes. Well done of its kind, but nothing special and instantly forgettable.

didn't click with me, only listened to it the day after and only got through half before i started skipping around to see what the second half contained, but I typically don't listen to grunge

I'm not that into grunge. My favorite grunge/heavier 90s rock moments are the ones that sound least like the rest of grunge- a few punky Nirvana songs and the heavily Hendrix-influences on Yellow Ledbetter. I just don't get the appeal of overindulgent guitar solos (didn't people claim grunge was supposed to be the cure to Hair Metal?) and the other side of grunge is sad dudes with acoustic guitars making weird biblical references. Why should that be the defining sound of the 90s when Britpop and Hip Hop occupied the same space? Naturally my favorite brief snippets here were the ones most removed from the rest. The chorus on Look at You that sounds like Eddie Vedder singing lead vocals for a Jesus and Mary Chain song. The synthesizer on Sworn and Broken also kicks so much ass. But outside of those two aspects, it's just grunge and weird gospel allusions. I looked up the band and found that they opened for some key grunge acts in their peak years before this album, and also had members go on to play with Dinosaur Junior and Queens of the Stone Age and REM. Which is cool, but I think it shows maybe this band just wasn't greater than the sum of its parts.

Maybe I should’ve gave this a better chance but it’s just reminds me of every cheesy sounding 90s post grunge band ever so I didn’t really to listen too intently. As soon as I hear that wannabe Eddie vedder style of singing I tune out. Some of the songs are kinda catchy or have a good groove but I’m not interested in listening to much of this ever again. It sounds like an album that tried to keep coasting off the wave of grunge music but couldn’t find any interesting places to take the genre. Listening to this right after smashing pumpkins also made me realize that even though Billy corgan isn’t the best singer at least he went for his own style during this era of every rock singer sounding the same. This one was really well produced though so even though it wasn’t great it wasn’t unpleasant to listen to at all. 👍:look at you

Make my mind is pretty catchy…the rest not great.

Ok…Nothing stood out & I expected more!

Not a bad album at all but nothing really on here that stood out to me. Sounded a little too similar to other bands out at the time and didn’t really push anything on this album to the full extent I feel like. Still good songs and not a bad listen at all, just don’t think it’s one for this list.

definitely fits the category of "why did this make the list"

Good grunge album not sure it’s anything brilliant though would rather have the QOTSA albums on the list Mark was involved in over this.

Meh, I’m not really too into it. As with a lot of grunge, any emotion in the lyrics and singing gets drowned out by the noise/droning guitars. 4/10

Found this a bit repetitive.

I wanted to really hate this, purely through musical snobbery; US mid 90's guitar band, wailing, long hair. Not exactly Boy About Town, is it? Some of the melodies and song structures reminded my of Blur's 1997 self-titled album, y'know, the American one. Interesting. It still wasn't enough to win me over, but it wasn't the write off I was expecting.

Iets te erg rock voor moi

Sorry but nothing note worthy to this album at all for me. Not even sure why it's on the list. I should go look it up now to see if i'm wrong.

90s grunge/hard rock stuff generally bores me and this isn't really doing much to change that. It's fine and occasionally even goes as far as interesting but doesn't really wow me at all.

just ok

Never could really get into screaming trees. Felt this was a really below average offering. 1.5/5

Genuint smaklös produktion... feelar sångaren sku kunna va bra me ett annat band o synth solon i sworn & broken rippa... annars jättetråkigt

Very dull - wouldn’t listen again.

Started strong but faded out. Not too bad. Fave track - Halo of Ashes

I wasn't really feeling this album, but there were instrumentals and sounds on a few tracks that I found really interesting. I didn't care much for it overall.

Pleasant enough, but nothing really stood out to me. Blend of grunge, alt rock, and psych rock is a good idea, but the execution should be more memorable than this. Wouldn’t be upset if one of these songs came on, but I’m not reaching for this one on my own again.

"Make My Mind" was easily the best song on what was a pretty boring album. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything memorable either. This band seems to be one of those that the verse is better than the chorus, and that's not saying much.

I really have no feelings about this album. It feels like generic 90s rock

I like some of their work, saw them live once and have got a few later albums by Mark Lanegan. Dust... though, feels like they were aiming for a Led Zep version of grunge and just falls flat.

Needs more upset trees

God I just listened to this and now I can't even remember it except it was dull as dishwater.

Not entertaining

TBH, not too special...

Didn’t like it at all.

I really didn’t like this voice. He sang with zero effort and should get zero praise for it. The music was mediocre but the voice was the main part and hard to ignore.

I'm pretty sure I could/would have liked these guys better back in the day (and now) if the music wasn't accompanied by the sadly sorta quintessential 90s slacker vocals. Evan Dando esque. I often sound hypocritical to myself as I mostly don't care about vocals/lyrics but I find that I do on a negative level (e.g. if they're distracting or bring everything down) and Screaming Trees are a perfect example. Almost zero emotion, low register, low effort... just the entire package immediately dulls any potential edges for me. There's nothing *bad* here - the guitar sounds are really nice and clean; it's a great *sounding* rock album. It's just very boring with virtually every song carrying simple and safe chord progressions. I'll make note of the odd and out of nowhere keyboard solo in "Sworn and Broken" which was maybe the first thing that caught my ear but even that seemed forced - like someone was thinking "we've gotta break outta the mold" and slapped that on. A small step up from Pavement and nowhere near the better of the new crop of 90s rock artists that freshened up the entire genre. 3/10 2 stars.

Mediocre and forgettable

Grungy, forgettable

This was variable but just about passable.

A bit weird. Not a favourite

Honk shoo mimimimimi Honk shoo mimimimimi

Första låtarna helt ok, blev sämre senare

Mediocre grunge. What's with the weird little keyboard solo on Sworn and Broken? Dying Days sure reminds me of Pearl Jam, no wonder it features Mike McCready. Nothing special or interesting here gets a charitable 2. It's not an abomination but not sure it should be on the list.

Well, I didn't hate this, but it really wasn't notable. Like stuff you'd hear on your local rock radio when it was feeling spicy and tired of other 90s rock.

Nondescript 90s white boys with angst.

johonkin nostalgiasuoneen tämä tehoaa. voisin laittaa taustalle soimaan uudestaankin, mutta tietynlainen grunge-proge-geneerisyys estää sen, että jaksais kummemmin keskittyä

not my cup of tea Could have been worse I guess

Overrated.

Considerably mid, but I don't want to flood the bottom of the ratings before I see more of the list. 3/10

Fomeque

The dull margins of proto-grunge. Mannered, and thus inconsequential.

Somehow both catchy and forgettable, might be that I left my grunge appreciation back in my teens. I'll be sure to give it another go at my next walk, when i focus better, but this didn't really speak to me personally.

I imagine that this album ranks pretty high for someone who likes this type of music. Unfortunately, that’s not me. There are some enjoyable parts though, Look At You in particular. I am curious if Queens of the Stone Age cite this band as an inspiration. Aspects of the production are very familiar especially on songs like the Witness. Things like the vocal melody on Traveler remind me a lot of Josh Homme.

I did not like this album. It honestly made me wonder about the criteria for making it onto this list. I don't think I had heard this one before, but I know their previous two albums quite well. I went back and listened to them afterwards and I think Sweet Oblivion is by FAR the superior album. Although maybe that's just the nostalgia talking... Anyway, this record is really pretty bad. There are a few decent tracks, but it's almost like you can hear that grunge was already on its way out when this was released. And I appreciate them trying to incorporate some psych influences but it just doesn't work. "Traveller" is a very sad Pink Floyd imitation, and the weird insertion of sitar and hand drums and harpsichord on other tracks doesn't sound cool, it just sounds, well, weird. I nearly gave this a 1 but my grungy little pre-teen heart wouldn't let me. Also I am saving that for The Eagles.

eh....

I braced myself because I don't really want to hear trees scream. But, it was strangely listenable: droning guitar, subdued voice. I guess this is grunge? I can't distinguish too many songs from each other, so it's a bit boring in that way. I see how this could have made way for the emo rock of the 2000/10s so for that I'm grateful.

Not bad, decent music, chill vibes

fede muito

Not really what I had in mind for the top 1001 albums

For listeners of 90's alternative radio (already a limited demographic), Screaming Trees would have been a palette cleanser between the songs you actually wanted to hear.

Not objectionable in any form. Nothing that suggests I would ever listen to them again.

Good songs, forgettable album

Det var inte så dåligt som jag trodde? men samtidigt ej så bra..

The beginning didn't really suck me in. It just felt like mediocre hard rock. And then it just continued. Nothing stood out, nothing fell flat. The guitar-work was good, but it felt repetitive, and the vocals did nothing to impress. Felt lifeless.

Halo of Ashes

While there are some ok tunes on here, nothing stood out to me. I honestly found it somewhat forgettable.

I didn’t really care for it, torn between 2 and 3 Fav was Sworn and Broken It got a bit better towards the end

It droned on and on and on.

Was ok

I’ve never been into grunge, this album explains why. Dull. The only song that caught my attention was Look At You. I liked the lyrics on that one. The rest can get in the bin.

Grunge, 90’er rock, udmærket

Pas pore pour le genre rock je me demande quelle annee mais ca sonne tres 90

Gave me a country vibe. Wasn't bad but personally was not for me

Pretty generic 90s music. It wasn't bad, I actually liked the riffs and guitars a lot. Musically it was great. But the singing had nothing worth listening to.

meh. It's a so-so record from the grunge band that never really broke. I was really surprised at how well reviewed this was at the time.

It's fine. The last track was the most interesting. 2.5/5.

It wasn't doing much for me, but look at you is quite lovely, bored, resigned love songs do it for me. Then fairly dull again.Sworn and Broken is quite nice again. I'm getting the feeling this isn't the most exciting band. They suffer from the same mid tempo chug that turns me off Oasis. Everything is quite ploddy. Not bad, just... Unexciting.

I feel bad for Gen X for only having the most boringest rock and roll to listen to.

Rock modesto y sin alma. Por eso prefiero a Mark Lanegan cuando está con los Soulsavers. Solo llama la atención la percusión exótica de los dos últimos minutos del disco.

Meh, was fine but not terribly engaging for me

Was ok, bit boring.
