Reviews (page 9 of 13)

Mixed feelings about this, stated thinking it would be another ‘girl and guitar’ albums that bore me but midway through started liking it, peaking at ‘This Mess we’re in’. After a few songs though it swelled to its flatness. 2.5 if I could, rounding up to 3.

I thought I would like this more than I did. Feels a bit self-involved.

Pretty much exactly mid. Don't particularly see the reason this album is on the list.

It's all right. But not incredibly memorable. I did quite enjoy the collaboration tracks featuring Thom Yorke.

The tracks I like, I REALLY like, but the tracks I dislike are unbearable. Thom Yorke was fun to hear though. Music was definitely not what I was expecting based off the album cover.

Indie Queen

A new a couple of the songs and like them. The album follows the sound and feel of the singles.

Previously rated: Dry (3/5) ************************** I liked Dry a lot better. This was more mellow, flirting with being boring. A low 3/5.

“Stop begging. We have Patti Smith at home”

Not bad but sader and more whiney than I prefer

could i write poetry to this? y

Almost every song has the same guitar tone and lack of vocal melody. Good Fortune and This Mess We're In stand out from the crowd.

For some reason I thought this would be like KT Tunstall and wasn't expecting much. Very pleasantly surprised. Probably not the kind of music I'll come back to often but it's honest enough

It's okay.

Jumped out of my chair when I heard Thom Yorke

Way better than the other PJ Harvey one I had. Production has gone a long way to fleshing out the artist's sound.

Kinda boring. Diet version of herself, Fiona Apple and Patti Smith.

PJ Harvey paints a landscape of New York City and love via her songwriting here. This is different than the PJ Harvey content that *I've* heard, which is to say that this album is probably more accessible than her previous works. It somehow feels more personal, despite not being as abrasive or in your face as, say, "Rid of Me". Although on that note, nothing really stood out after the 47 or so minutes went by. Harvey's voice gets to shine a bit more here though, I guess.

Not a big PJ Harvey fan, but this seemed like a decent enough album.

This album builds and becomes better as it goes.

3/5 Some interesting stuff in here.

Not a huge fan

It's alright, but nothing really stands out to me. The second half of the album has some more interesting stuff (Thom Yorke collabs, some odd time signatures). But ultimately it was pretty forgettable.

Found this a little disappointing compared to the other album's I've heard from PJ. It's quite lowkey, and I don't really feel like there are any standout songs from this. A banger or two would have bumped this up a star from me. Maybe it's more of a slow burn, who knows. But I have had this on repeat and it's just washed right by me. Best Track: Horses in my Dream Worst Track: Beautiful Feeling

Thoughts before listening: PJ Harvey is on this list a lot, and she has certainly been pretty universally praised from music journalists over the past 20+ years. I usually find one or two songs per album that I enjoy and the rest is just okay to me. I look forward to seeing if this album will be any different. Review: As usual there were a number of songs I liked and added to my playlist: "Good Fortune", "This Mess We're In", "Kamikaze", and "This is Love". As a whole the album was a nice listen while I walked to get groceries but probably not something I will go back to. I did actually recognize a number of these songs so I believe I had listened to this album before, probably on a playlist made from a best albums of the 00s list. 3-stars

It was better than i thought, enough to keep listening till the end

Composite of cool Alternative poetry Pulsating power

Song with the guy from Radiohead was definitely a stand out along with the later half of the album in my opinion. Kind of felt Courtney love/Janis Joplin-ish

Rock, 2000 -> 3

I didn't like this as much as I thought it would, especially considering I've heard it before. I listened to it a few times, and I like a good chunk of the songs, especially the closer, but stuff like the vocal effects on the opener and really Thom Yorke's voice not really fitting well on the song he appears in hold this one back for me.

Very fun listen, clean polished and beautiful lyrics , right at great short of amazing a very solid 3

My initial thought when this popped up: Ugh. Not looking forward to this one. Let’s get into it. It starts off horrendous. Big Exit is a trash song that seems to go on forever, but it picks up a bit — a *slight bit* over the next song, and then One Line is actually good. A bit of a meh Beautiful Feeling, but then The Whores Hustle is pretty catchy. The Mess We’re In is FANTASTIC, though that’s mainly because it’s a Thom Yorke song. Back to meh for You Said Something, but then Kamikaze is a rocking good time. This is Love is OK, I guess (slightly above meh), and Horses in my Dreams is dreadful. Overall, better than I was expecting, but my initial reaction is still a bit justified. I kinda liked half the songs, so it can’t be less than a 3 star rating. I’m trying to decide whether I would rather listen to this again, or yesterday’s Iggy Pop, and I can’t really decide. Some good songs, some filler. Honestly, despite being 20 some-odd years apart, they’re not that different.

Album étonnant car j'ai toujours cru que PJ Harvey et Alanis Morissette étaient une seule et même personne. Après vérification, la seconde sonne quand même bien mieux que la première.

Deep, dark 90's music.

Never been a huge PJ fan. I like a few of the tracks here but others are just too dreary for me. Fave Tracks: Good Fortune, We Float 3.3/5

Pretty good

Another 3 star, neither here or there really. This is Love is a standout.

Pretty good.

14/10/24 An okay album.

decent but a bit long

I wasn’t sure how I felt at first but this really grew on me. I liked the song with Thom Yorke a lot. The album kind of reminded me of a more chill Liz Phair

Quintessential ‘just a young girl tryna find her way in this crazy town’ playlist vibes. The thom yorke appearances were a pleasant surprise.

Vähän taiteellista indie / alt rockia. Thom Yorke yllätysfeatissa kahdessa kappaleessa. Osa kappaleista vaikempia kuunneltavaa ja osa helpompaa. Parhaat: You Said Something, The Whores Hustle And The Hustlers Whore, Horses In My Dreams

pretty good, didn't really stick with me though honestly or jump out at me like crazy

It is well-made and smart punky poppy rock like all PJ Harvey's work. It just doesn't do much to move me in any way.

Solid 3. Good Album.

hey the last PJ Harvey album I had my biggest criticism was she was too quiet and it was a little too melancholy. she definitely fixed those issues for me with this album. Clear concise lyrics with a bit more professional sound. One Line captures it pretty well. Still not really my jam but enjoyable!

Liking PJ Harvey makes you cool. Shame the music isn't that good. Skip to We Float then turn it off.

ok but nothing special. preferred the second half of the album to the first.Nothing to get me excited about in this album but pleasant enough to listen again.

Never heard this before. The guitars sound fantastic! This record demands volume. To play this at a normal volume feels like driving a race car under the speed limit. I bet she's a powerful live performer. I feel like there's this tradition of New York albums, and this is definitely one of them. Harvey is a decent singer but the songs themselves are not particularly catchy and I don't know if the awesome guitar sounds are enough to get me to invest the time to learn to love them despite the lack of hooks. Ask me in a year.

Well, now I'm halfway through the PJ Harvey albums in this collection (previous was her debut "Dry"), so that feels a bit like an accomplishment. And this one seems a bit more lively and interesting than "Dry", thankfully. I'm not sure why, exactly, but I don't find myself getting sucked into her music as much as I'd like (it may just be that there's not a lot of variety within an album, likely due to not really working with a full band), but I did enjoy "Big Exit" and "You said something" more than the others. (Her video for "A place called home" made me think of a VR game, "The Under Presents", although without the puzzle-solving aspect of needing multiple incarnations to proceed.) And while I didn't particularly enjoy the collaborations with Thom Yorke, I liked it that they worked together for a few of her songs, with "This mess we're in" providing a bit of that elusive variety.

I thought this was okay but many of the tracks seemed quite flat. Didn’t want to turn it off but wouldn’t seek out again. 3/5

Not a terrible album. Has a great start but somewhat underperforms after that.

I liked this more than I expected, I’m not going to follow her tour and become a Harvey Head or anything, but it’s catchy.

Not bad - wasn’t exactly what I was expecting. Pretty mellow overall.

Thought this would be better than this. It was ok.

Most memorable song for me was the Thom Yorke feature mainly for his voice

Pretty cool alt rock. But I probably won't come back to it. Still a decent listen.

I listened to this like 4 times and I dunno. I want to like it? It's probably great? It didn't really stick with me though.

Melancólico, único

A couple of good songs early on. I like her more upbeat, catchier songs. I don't care for the slower, quieter ones.

It’s good, but I don’t enjoy it. I appreciate the quality and creativity of this album, but yeah it just doesn’t excite me like her earlier releases, it’s kind of missing the punk edge.

I don't really have anything to say about this one. It was fine.

PJ is talented but inconsistent. I can do without about half of these tracks.

I feel like Kat Stratford would’ve enjoyed this. It was alright. Not horrible. Not my favorite.

Enjoyed more than I remembered enjoying it but still not a huge fan.

I was totally thinking that Mick Harvey might be involved with this album.

I'm kind of surprised I am not more into this since it seems like the type of thing I would gravitate towards. I think maybe if I had heard it younger I definitely would like it more. There are some songs I really like on here, "This Mess We're In", "Kamikaze", "This is Love" and "Horses In My Dreams". Otherwise it didn't grab me much. Worth a listen though.

Not bad

HL: "Horses in My Dreams", "Kamikaze", "Big Exit", "The Whores Hustle...", "The Mess We're In" Looking back at the other PJ Harveys on this list, I'd say Let England Shake was my favourite, but Rid of Me, representing 90's alternative, has the most reason to be on this list. Stories is in an interesting midway point between the lower-fi Dry & Rid of Me, & the more melodic Let England Shake. It's not a huge departure from her 90's stuff musically, just smoothed over with hip, easy-on-the-ears production... until it isn't ("Kamikaze") Perhaps as a result of knowing its enduring critical popularity, I let my expectations run too wild and found myself (a teensy bit) disappointed in the album I got versus the one I built up in my head. Though this may be the last I see of PJ Harvey on this website, the enigma remains as to why I can't get into her more, despite all 4 albums being really good in one way or another. Guess I gotta keep listening to her then -_- 3.5 Still September 5, 2024

Not that cool, all sort of blended in and was fine but not displeasing

Enjoyable but I likely will not revisit.

A case could be made for the necessity of listening to one PJ Harvey album. But there is no reason to need to listen to two. This album was okay at best. There were a few tracks where she sounded like she was more just yelling atonally instead of singing. Perhaps it’s a better album lyrically, but I just couldn’t get interested enough in it to care.

lastig album om te reviewen. Mijn eerste reactie is BAH indie rock achtige shit! FAVO: This mess we're in

It was okay. Thom York was annoying as ever. PJ Harvey was annoying too at places

Skaplig.

Не знаю. Вроде мозгом я понимаю, что альбом хорош, но для меня он прям средний

Some songs had a Radiohead vibe. Not bad.

I feel like she should have at least one hit that played on pop radio stations too much and I assume its misogyny that she doesn't just so I can say her one single was good but the rest of this album is kinda meh, but instead I guess she just took some b side radiohead songs from the bends era. It's OK I guess.

I like it enough. Better than 2 stars. But not that memorable.

Classic PJ Harvey. Still don’t know my thoughts on her, it was pretty okay.

I've never got fully on-board with PJ Harvey, she has all the ingredients I normally like, but her music doesn't grab me, and I'm not sure why. This is fine but I don't feel compelled to listen again so 3*

Not a bad album. PJ Harvey collaborated with Thom Yorke on 2 songs on this record, and both of those are absolute garbage, but the rest of the album is fine. Fuck Thom Yorke, and fuck Radiohead man. Everything that moron touches turns to shit. All he does is moan. Favourite songs: The Whores Hustle and the Hustlers Whore, Good Fortune, Big Exit, A Place Called Home Least favourite songs: Beautiful Feeling, Horses in My Dreams 3/5

Decent

dont love it, dont hate it 3/5 not bad at all imo

A bit uneven across the board but finds its footing in the last third. Not the best voice, but she uses what she has well, creatively beatmatching percussion at the end of certain musical phrases. PJ’s vocal control and range comes across much stronger when she takes a softer approach rather than the fairly toneless yelling on some cuts. The specificity — and oddness — of her lyricism conjures up very specific, evocative scenes, and there’s no topic deemed too taboo. Listened to: walking near Joe’s Pond. Favorite tracks: Kamikaze, The Whores Hustle and The Hustles Whore, This is Love

This was fine

This was fine, kind of like Patti Smith. Loved the Thom Yorke vocals.

Cool nok album med en håndfuld gode sange. Sej stemning på albummet men ikke alle sangene rammer helt og nogle gange føles det en smule ensformigt. Helt klart en 3.5/5 men nok tættere på 3 end 4 dog :)

Very passionate lyrics and vocals, a must listen if you're a fan of indie rock or if you've ever felt aimless in your heart, though I do feel like it's a bit too long and samey for my liking, it definitely peaks in the early tracks.

Eh I don’t like it.

Heilt ok

Certainly better than the noisy mess that was "Rid of Me," but "Stories..." doesn't strike me as a remarkable album at all. Kamikaze does rip, though, and We Float is a beautiful composition. Otherwise, this is generic alt-rock with songs whose length well exceed their content. Thom Yorke does his thing a couple of times, which is fine I guess, but doesn't move the needle for me. I know this album is a love letter to New York, but damned if it isn't a bit corny and heavy-handed.

Interesting listen, which I wasn’t expecting 3/5

It's a good album, but not really my style of music. Can see why people like it, though.

I don't like PJ Harvey as much as she deserves.

A little bit too alternate for me

3+ Stars (9/15)

So I haven’t listened to ‘more recent’ PJ Harvey for a while. Largely as I thought I didn’t like it as much as the really early stuff. I must have listened to this a reasonable amount before as I knew all the tracks. There is a load of great song writing, but I just found that even though I kinda wanted to I wasn’t really loving it. And then I got to Kamikaze and Is this love, and it was a total step change. Louder, dirtier and just works better for me with her voice. Basically, much more similar to the early stuff. So, trust your instincts kids. Maybe a slightly harsh 3*.

Still like it but not as much as when it came out

Not really my cup of tea, but she is good and I liked more as it went on. Chrissie Hynde/Patti Smith/Fiona Apple vibes in parts.

什么上古精神小妹

I briefly had a fling with someone purporting to be PJ Harvey’s cousin. He was a d**k. He refused to help me down some stairs with a pushchair because he didn’t want anyone thinking he was the father. Hope he steps on some Lego every day. Anyway - the album was good even if the family was crap.

Good guitarist. Not a bad songwriter. Her songs have a certain drive -- the opening sounds like a music for Scott Pilgrim series for example, and vocal reminds me of Jefferson Airplane. Which I like. But... this is the only good thing I can say about the album. Half of the songs have a very similar energy and arrangement, so that tracks don't sound distinctive to me. Except that one with Thom -- it was nice. Love Thom. PJ on the other hand...

Very generic rock. There wasn't really even anything memorable or standout. It's a decent album, I guess, but I can't really officially call it good. The songs were boring, with most being mediocre, a couple being good, and a couple being kind of bad. It's nothing I would choose to listen to when better music exists.

I’ve never really listened to PJ Harvey… which, based on this album, is a real shame. I’m happy to have listened to this

She had her moments for sure. I could listen to this by myself sometime.

its like a modern pop rock version of patti smith. im not the biggest fan of patti smith though. this mess we're in and we float were nice but outside of those this record was pretty mediocre. 6/10

This just didn't do much for me. I am not sure why. Maybe it's a vocal tone thing... there was some variety in the songs, but they all felt kind of same, somehow.

Nice record, thom yorke in the middle of it for some reason

As good as this album is her "To Bring You My Love" is even better

Awfully angsty and sounded mournful. I did enjoy We Float.

Good, but not terribly memorable

Random ass radiohead song in there lol

Pretty enjoyable.

weiss nicht so recht: harmonische songs und skurrile tracks - singer/songwriter-zeugs?! kann mich nicht wirklich zu einer bewertung durchringen ..

Need to revisit to really appreciate I think, liked what I heard….

glad to see thom yorke, good album but not coming back to it

Pretty good! Has Thom Yorke on it!

After not really liking the previous album from PJ (let England shake), this was a pleasant surprise and I quite liked it. Perhaps she should’ve done more with Thom Yorke.

Very representative of indie rock in the 2000, some decent tracks here and there bump it up to a 3

A little more waily than I like, but I enjoyed it well enough.

def more enjoyable than the Rid of Me album

I'll need to listen to this more. Definitely more accessible than "Rid of Me", the album fed to us just prior on our particular journey. But while Rid of Me was in my collection and was completely familiar, I'd never heard any of her later work, so while it was an easier listen, to me, it was still foreign. I want to listen more and suspect my rating would rise over time, but for now...

I thought I wouldn’t enjoy it but it really grew on me. 3

Decent. I like her other albums better

A decent album from Ms Harvey!

Pretty good. Pretty, pretty, pretty, pretty good.

Interesting sounds loved by artists I love for reasons I don't fully get.

a cheeky thom cameo. i like the instrumentals but idk if her voice is for me idk what it is. low three

Encore une fois, correct mais sans plus

Decent album, but I'm not in love with PJ's voice. Overall a pretty good listen.

Ok, interesting writing but not the nicest sound

Never heard any of this before but enjoy her sound

Pretty good

Lo escuché una sola vez y a medias. Un disco muy promedio, se deja oír.

Buen disco, tira para un 6,5 aprox Mejor tema: This Mess We'Re In Otros temas: You Said Something y This Is Love

I've given this album a lot of time, largely in the hope that it grew on me more than it has. I do like it, just not as much as I'd hoped. I've no real complaints, it just doesn't grab me as much as I want it to.

This album does not start off strong for me. The first couple of songs made me think this whole album might end up a miss, but there's a big swing at "Beautiful Feeling" and the album doesn't really look back from there. Beautiful Feeling is the peak of the album, but every song after that is much better than the first part.

The Mess We’re In is phenomenal. The rest is okay

some cool stuff, some pretty eh stuff. classic 3 star album right here

This is not PJ Harvey’s best album, but it’s probably her first great album. Her first few (Dry, Rid of Me) were more rooted in punk and even grunge, by Stories, Harvey ended up with a more encompassing rock sound, drawing from many different sides of rock, like punk, blues, indie, grunge, britpop, and (in particular on this album) folk. Easily my favorite album of hers until the masterpiece Let England Shake. The duet with Thom Yorke on “The Mess We’re In” is good, but the tracks where Yorke provides backing vocals are even better: “One Line” and “Beautiful Feeling”. None of these songs are even the highlights on the album though, “This Is Love” and “Good Fortune” are my favorites.

Just not my thing.

Olipas vaikea levy. Aamulla kunneltuna odottelin levyn loppuvan, että pääsee seuraavan pariin. Iltapäivällä kuitenkin toinen soittokerta ja toimi jo paremmin. Ehkä tähänkin lämpeisi paremmin kuuntelukertojen lisääntyessä, joten annetaan kivasta äänesä ylimääräistä ja painetaan kakkosen sijaan kolmoseen.

Very of the early 2000s -- high school me would have enjoyed this.

3 - Good stuff, but it doesn't hit me.

Other than the name, I didn’t know if she was a he or a group or a clothing store. I knew zero about PJ Harvey. Sounds a tiny bit like a female Lou Reed on this album.

An interesting journey. I liked a lot of this. Grungy and weird

I’ve gotten at least one other pj Harvey album, and I definitely enjoyed this one a lot more. I was bouncing back and forth between a 3 or a 4 for this one. I’ll definitely give it another listen.

I liked the songs that have the guy who spells his name wrong on them.

Some good songs but also several boring ones

Good Fortune and This is Love - two absolutely stonking tracks. Great when you’re in the right mood. The rest of it wasn’t quite hitting the right spot for me but I wasn’t particularly in the right headspace. Should be a 3.5 really…

STANDOUTS: Good Fortune One Line This Is Love I struggle with rock/indie rock all sounding so similar/not dynamic enough to notice a difference between tracks. The lyrics are incredible. But I'm such a pop hook/melody music listener. OVERALL: 3/5

Vibes: 2000s Rock Themes: New York

She has a nice voice and I like the rhythm of the songs across the album but it just really kind of melts into the background. I tried listening 2-3 times now and I enjoy it but I'm not like, super stoked about it. Enjoyable but not a huge draw for me.

3.1 love the Thom Yorke tracks

Patti Smith vibes, just not as good

A bit too weird, but not bad

Didn't hit me in the same way that "Dry" did.

- Paar echt nice Tracks drauf („A Place Called Home“ z.B. fand ich sehr stark) - Mega fand ich das Feature mit Thom Yorke „The Mess We‘re In“ - Insgesamt nicht verkehrt, bin aber nicht ganz in der Stimmung für das Album gewesen - Gebe PJ vllt. wannanders nochmal eine Chance Rating: 3/5

- Ganz coole Tracks dabei

Rätt tunt överlag. Tycker det är rätt generiskt. Det är aldrig dåligt men lyfter inte heller. Svårt. We float bäst.

Trevlig lyssning men utan låtar som riktigt sticker ut. Stabil trea.

It was nice. And help me familiarize myself with some Barbara songs before I go and see her live later this year

Nice sounds

It's a perfectly good album, but it didn't set me on fire. There are some great songs, particularly The Whores Hustle And The Hustlers Whore and You Said Something, but it's not one of my favourite albums. I'm borderline on whether it's a 3 or a 4 - it's really on the cusp for me.

Sounded nice but didn’t really tickle my fancy

Solid album. "You Said Something" is a favorite of mine.

Better vocalist when she sings than when she yells. Interesting lyrics.

better than the last pj harvey joint

2024-04-08...

Love the writing on this. Thought it was going to be real pop-Rocky, glad I was wrong

An album to screw to.

Listening to this on a dreary Monday morning felt pretty appropriate. Dark, brooding, droning.

I liked the general feel of this without anything standing out

I don't know. Had some stuff by PJ heard before and was not impressed. Same with this album. Wasn't my thing.

Enjoyed this much more than Dry. Solid album, but maybe just not my style

OK - nice lyrics and a voice - but nothing knocked me out. Saying that , still a solid listen

Eh, fine. 6/10

Pretty good. I remember listening to and liking this album back when it was released. There are highlights throughout the album (Big Exit, One Line), but overall I don’t like the album as much as I did 20ish years ago.

I don’t think PJ will ever be one of my favourite artists. But I think I understand her a bit more, these days. I kind of get why critics seem to adore her.

One of those projects that's a good listen, but I wouldn't say there are any standout songs. Very cohesive. I would listen again. Great voice.

Sounded like a mild version of the xx. I liked the higher tempo songs but got lost on the slower songs. High 3

First listen Saved 5/12 Top track: Big Exit

Loved this album. Dope sounds!

This Mess We're In was a frequent play for me when this album was released.

50/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

Solid album. I was not a fan of the Thom Yorke song. I really don’t like Radiohead. Really liked Good Fortune.

Too jangley and too much reverb, but I liked the lyrics.

Rockig, keine Songs die ich kenne. Ein Mädel das singt. Ok, aber nichts, was mich mit genommen hat. 3/5

Good album I hadn't heard before. \"This is love\" is a good track. A guy named Robert Ellis was a producer on this album. Despite what Tidal says, this is not the same Robert Ellis of Topo Chico and Lime fame.

Used to listen quite a lot to PJ Harvey but not quite so impressed today. I like the album, but somehow something is missing. Total impression = ok.

A heavily 2000s feel. Harvey's vocal is great - kind of Lana-esque. I loved "This Mess We're In", which featured Tom Yorke of Radiohead and his ethereal voice, as well as the two preceding tracks for being musically strong lead-ups to the album's centrepiece. The rest of the tracks were alternately rocking or soothing, with a few interesting time signatures. The main downfall of this album was its lack of adventurousness. Every song focused on a single particular sound (be it a nifty rhythm, a couple of unusual chords, or a guitar lick) and didn't really deviate from that sound at all. I felt that many of the tracks could've been shorter, and/or shown more intra-song variety. Key tracks: Good Fortune, The Whores Hustle And The Hustlers Whore, This Mess We're In, This Is Love

Pretty good for new noise...

Good Album.

Nice voice.

Okay, had some interesting music but I could take it or leave it.

Somewhere between 3 and 4 stars for me. I liked maybe half the songs, but the ones I liked I really liked

This is my first ever proper PJ Harvey listen. This album gave me a some good feelings. It has swagger with some story telling. Although nothing really caught me enough to make me want to listen again

Love the strummy guitars on this album. Definitely will listen again.

Not bad, quite enjoyable background music

Decent album, definitely worth a revisit

PJ Harvey is pretty cool. If this album were played faster and by less-talented musicians, it would sound like Hole. But, it's better than Hole. How's that for a review?

Solid rock album. Favorite songs This is Love and Big Exit.

Lighter tone of cranberries, garbage

I know she’s an indie darling, been around for a while but I never checked out any of albums. At the beginning, I was thinking more of a 3 but then Beautiful Feeling hit and I got some more depth here. Then The Whores comes in and the lyrics and vocals kinda take me out. Oh hey, Thom! Something about the delivery I just am not that into. Reminds me of Nick Cave a little in that I feel like I just don’t get it. Probably a 3.4 for me if I’m being honest.

Lain op genre

Pretty good 2000 kind of more refined punkish rock. Enjoyed a little more than average but barely a three for me

1st song was banger

some real bangers

Sehr schönes Album. Rock, Pop, Folk und Electronica.

Surprisingly all right

Good fortune og Float eru mjög flott bæði, en er ekki hrifinn af þessu Thom Yorke samstarfi, og restin af lögunum er áheyrileg svo langt sem þau ná, en ég er ekki að tengja. Niðurstaða, P.J. Harvey er fínn "best of" listamaður fyrir mig.

Pretty good but quite underwhelming, considering the hype about her. More "commercial" and accessible than "Dry", but consequently more generic and bland. Just another iteration of that brand of '00s alt-rock.

Was alright, though I can't help but feel that she didn't really find the perfect sound for herself on this

It was.. perfectly fine music.

Appreciate the artistry - nice voice. Don’t totally love the style. Notable tracks include the mess we’re in (feat. Thom Yorke!)

Hmm ...

Nothing amazing but solid. I enjoyed this more than Dry

It was fine... not something I would pursue on my own.

It’s okay. Not really rememberable.

Meh, nothing great, nothing too bad.

I think this is a strong 3 for me – like, if we could go by decimals, you’re looking at a 3.5 that I can’t personally round up to a 4. This album hits on a lot of my sensibilities for this era, but I feel like the vision she’s going for isn’t fully realized over the course of this album. You’ve got great soundscapes, and when they hit in tandem with the lyrics, they hit, and I’d say they hit more often than not. However, when they do feel disjointed, it kinda sticks out to me in a way that… doesn’t ruin the album experience, necessarily, but it’s harder to stay invested for me because I kind of have to focus one way or the other instead of working in harmony. Those moments are what’s keeping me from rounding up to a 4, but this is a really nice sounding album, and I think there’s some high emotional points on it that would make me recommend it to some people I know.

It’s aight

3.0 Nothing particularly stood out but I liked the album as a whole. Will try and give er another go at some point and check out the catalog.

Prefer Pat Benetar - Tired / repetitive guitar work detracts from the songs IMO. Decent album overall, just not a standout to me among the flood of early 00's alt rock.

It's quit ok

The stuff with Thom Yorke was decent. This just usually isn't my style of songs. I can see where some people love her but it just didn't hit right for me. Though i did have a headache while listening so probably influenced the vibe.

It wasn't bad, but nothing exceptional really stood out to me. Other than the track, "This Mess We're In" I don't really see coming back to anything on this album, but it's far better than many other two-star albums, so I'm going to give this a three.

I think I can see the reason this is a best album, but it's not for me. A bit one note.

I research This Is Desire by Harvey for a university project so was slightly familiar with a raucous and sex themed material. It was nice to hear the gentler moody tracks. It didn't blow me away, but it wasn't bad my any means. Think I just think this 90's material is in the perfectly fine category. Fav Tracks: A Place Called Home, Beautiful Feeling, Kamikaze, Horses in my Dreams, This Wicked Tounge

Good stuff but I couldn’t get fully into it

Regular

Move over alanis

Meget unremarkable. Hyggeligt nok at høre på, meget groovy men gør ikke så meget for mig. Fede guitar riffs

I am a PJ Harvey fan, but I really only like 2 - 3 songs on this album.

At first the album started to sound good, but as it evolved the less I liked it. As I said in the review of the Television album, I'm not a big fan of Punk, which is why I couldn't finish listening to it. However, it cannot be denied that it is very well crafted (if musicalization is concerned).

Not my kind of jam but giving an extra point because I think it would have be a fun album to see live

Always heard the name. Never listened till now. I liked it.

Kind of hit and miss tho I wish I liked it better bec I really like PJ as an artist.

47 minutes of pajama doing her best patty smith. Not bad, but not that good either. the last song is good. 3.1

Good album for a social gathering

A few piqued my interest enough to download them

It was going so well until Thom Yorke showed up...

I had never actually listened to PJ Harvey which I think is a big miss on my part. Stories From The City…., is up my alley. I love her voice, her vibe. There is an energy to it but it is a bit restrained. Big Exit, One Line and Mess We’re In show her potential. Overall it runs together a but I look forward to hearing more of her 7.4/10

Didn't love it, didn't hate it. I really like This Mess We're In. None of the songs sound alike, which is refreshing after some of the recent albums.

I liked this better than the last one. Especially the end of the album.

Reminded me of angsty rock of the late 80s/early 90s.

Need a few more listens. It’s growing on me. A bit brooding at times. But I think I could like it with a little more time.

Not too crazy about this one. I think there are some great songs in isolation but I'm not a fan of how this comes together as a whole. I really like her voice and style, but she could use some more interesting flows and themes for sure.

I like it, very of the times album. 3.3

No hate for the album, just not for me.

It’s okay; interesting voice, and I enjoyed a few songs, but most of them just weren’t for me.

5.5/10

Pretty decent album, certain songs just turned me off Top tracks: A Place Called Home, You Said Something, This Mess We’re In

Never really got PJ - this album was good but nothing much really stood out to me

Know her from the project but blind album. I think i just have to accept I will not like PJ Harvey, but there is no dislike for her.

Not something I would normally listen to. But I did enjoy it.

Can't tell what's special about it.

Reminds me a lot of Patti Smith.

У нее есть коллаба с томом Йорком!!! Для лёгкого меланхоличного настроения

Welcome Jason and Dom (and Jason again) and whoever "garbanzo-beans" is to the group! This album was decent, a few saves but overall didn't really click for me. It's funny that even though it's not really a pop album it has a similar but of sound to a lot of the late 90s/early 2000s pop songs around that time

I’m a sucker for strong female vocals. She just loves NYC so damn much. nice job here PJ. Giving a 3 since there’s no real stand out stacks but i enjoyed the album. Was NOT expecting Radiohead Thom to drop in halfway thru but was a nice treat.

I always wanted to like PJ more than I do. Give this one a solid go but nothing really stood out to me and I don't think I'm a fan of her vocal style. Might have to listen again sometime.

Fav Song: Good Fortune

Second PJ Harvey album and again it was alright

Best Song: The Whores Hustle And The Hustlers Whore. Apart from having the best song title on the album, this one is delivered with a certain stankfaced edge that I really like, especially in the final crescendo. Worst Song: This Mess We're In. For reasons I can't fully explain, Thom Yorke's presence here detracts from the vibe being constructed. Overall: Moody and broody, while still fairly palatable. Nothing altogether exciting, but also nothing outright bad. Highly forgettable.

the thom yorke song on this album is by far the best one which is really funny other than that it sounds like a post okc rock album it’s pretty decent

PJ Harvey was never on my radar in the past. This was okay. Her voice is fine although I didn't particularly like it. I didn't realize how much I liked Thom Yorke's voice until "The Mess We're In" came as a relief.

Pretty solid alt rock singer songwriter album. The Thom Yorke tracks are cool. The songwriting is solid. PJ Harvey is an artist I need to check out more thoroughly but a full album of hers has yet to truly envelope me. Although the tracks that hit always hit hard.

nice vocals

The only reason I give it a 3 is because of Thom Yorke on The Mess We’re In.

Not my style

I liked this better than the other one of hers I listened to. This seemed a little harder edged.

55/100

Overall good but not my style

6/10 peaceful listen

What a bad-ass PJ Harvey is. The Thom Yorke cameo was sweeeeeet.

Не зашло. Вот так-с. Но название альбома необычное. Это единственное, что я запомню с этого альбома.

Enjoyable high 3s

Going in to this album, there's simply no way in hell PJ Harvey is worthy of having 4 albums in here. I am very willing to entertain this album as the one that belongs instead of Dry, one of the most boring albums I've ever heard. Meh...this is fine. Don't really like or dislike. I guess I just don't get her. Favorite track: This is Love

Not a big fan of rock music

THE DUET WITH THOM YORKE IS EVERYTHING OMG their voices are perfect together

I'm glad this album came on the weekend as it gave me the opportunity to listen to it a couple more times. Not exactly my cup of tea, but enjoyable, none-the-less..

It was ok. Kind of lost interest half way through. A low 3/5

After the first song I was ready to rate this as a 1 or 2. The vocals just didn't mesh with the music well, but as the album went on, it got better.

Massive improvement over her other album, there are enough lillith-fair-chick-rock sensibilities in this to be a good enough album to listen to, but it's nothing special and the last 2 songs are so so boring
