Interesting to go back and listen to these guys: their sound is a cinematic blend of US pop punk and UK Indie. right as everything was coming together in the mid 00's. Well made and produced
Not bad. I liked Starlight a lot. Other than that it was pretty good if a little self serious. A high 3.

There are some really good tracks on this one, espacially Starlight, Map of the Problematique and of course Knights of Cydonia. As usual, their ballads are pompous in a cheesy way sadly not really interesting. There are some other hollow moments here, like Exo-Politics and Hoodoo which drags the album down. In retrospect, it marks a transition for Muse, where their energic compositions would lead to their current "big" sound and where the concept would crush the songs themselves.
Probably the Muse album that I listened to the most. Not gonna lie, it just doesn't hit like it used to. Is it just me or Muse is just my generation's U2? Anyway, it's not bad, it just didn't age that well.
Not of fan of muse, never get the hype. If I’m objective I must admit it’s not that bad.
I know this album has been important in the 2000s and is considered a landmark in that decade. Muse really made a huge hit with that one. However, listening back at it now leaves a bittersweet feeling. Too much production, too much arrangements, too much for nothing and in the end, it didn't age so well because of that.

Falls into the "I want to like it but I just don't" category. I enjoy some of the dirty hard rock moments, but I don't really like their "pop" moments and the vocals start grating on me after a song or two. I remember when some of these songs were on the radio and I felt the same way then.
This sounds like Billy Corgan forced Radiohead and Coldplay to collaborate on an album about conspiracy theories at gunpoint.
If I was still in high school this would be a 5. As I’ve grown older and listened to more music, it is pretty average. This is the last solid Muse album as a whole, but you can start to see the patterns of future albums starting with horrible lyrics (they were never good tbh) and overproduction. Muse definitely has stadium rock aspirations here and while it generally works it feels a bit hollow now. Make no mistake, they are a great “live band” and Matt Bellamy is a talented guitarist, but it all feels so juvenile now. Sorry HS me. 3.5 down to 3. High points for solid tunes and instrumentation while also tainted by my own nostalgia. Everything that is good here is just done better on Absolution and OoS. Also Muse now is a caricature of themselves it’s so sad.
A big dumb bombastic space western of an album. And it's great. Peak Muse with the perfect amount of silliness. Also, the drums on Starlight spell out 'TITS' in morse code. It's a lot of fun. Rating: 4.5/5 Playlist track: Starlight Date listened: 11/02/23
I freaking love Muse, their vibe and the singers voice are immaculate
Nerds think this lot from Devon are possibly aliens - in fact they possibly do as well but really it's just Queen in Space. No bad thing I suppose and the singles were great to be fair. Best Tracks: Starlight; Super Massive Blackhole; Knights of Cydonia
Highlights: All and none If you've heard one Muse album you've pretty much heard them all. I'm almost grateful because they're like America's one dose of clownish Eurovision bombast. They do "experiments" from one to the next that are more just savvy cash-ins; here it's on Beck's renewed popularity ("Supermassive...",) and Coldplay mania ("Starlight"). They also fart around at the end with Spanish-ness, orientalist motifs, and spaghetti western surf, and it's honestly their best because it knowingly embraces their campiness. They're like Nicolas Cage -- sometimes you're not are they're in on the joke. They do have very fleshed out cadences, almost Rufus Wainwright at times, but just because they have more chords doesn't make it fresh. The musical ideas tend to be stiff while the power comes from the performance, and the performance had exactly two dynamics. I will say this -- it's hard to make the Zvex Fuzz Factory sound good, and he manages to use its oscillation just enough to breathe some life into the arrangement. They are veteran stadium rockers. They can nail all of this live. If you're a middle manager in retail with no strong opinions on art that just wants to check Rock Concert off the bucket list -- accept no substitutes.

One thing you can't be after listening to a Muse album is not pumped, I may have to see the fuse box because I've just been amped. Muse take you through all the feelings as you go from soft and delicate to hard drums that make your legs hurt from trying to copy the drum fills, they venture from classical to latin horns to a synth Queen rock hybrid baby's that make you phase out of time and space and drift back down for more. Will always come back for more. Favourite tracks Starlight, Assassin, Knights of Cydonia.
It's really hard to argue against this one. It's just a masterful album. The production is out of this world, of course. But the songwriting and performances are also stellar. Does every track slap? No. But the ones that do? They bang hard enough to more than cover the few that don't. Just a great album.

Muse is a band I was only vaguely familiar with and for some reason just assumed I didn’t like. But fuck this thing rocks so hard. It owns bones.

One of my favourite albums of my youth! Starlight and Supermassive Black Hole sounded absolutely incredible live. Always loved the bass tones of this band. Phat.
No revelations. In fact, I struggled to find any originality - when they weren't trying to be U2 they were mostly being Queen, but there were echoes of Black Sabbath and even some Focus in there too. Not unpleasant, but it's just stadium rock - which probably sounds great to kids who haven't heard it all before - but I have, so there's nothing for me here.
Listened to this album a lot through high school. Still a hit today for me! Starlight is my favorite song by a lot. Hearing Assassin again was a nice surprise, forgot about that song

I have a similar relationship with Muse that I have with Red Hot Chili Peppers, I like them, but I haven’t listened to them often, although that might be the reason for me liking them, the lack of oversaturation that a lot of people seem to be using as a reason for why these bands suck
He sounds distractingly like Thom Yorke on a lot of the album. Did not enjoy. Putting arpeggiated synths over boring rock music doesn't really make it better.
Knights of Cydonia. Magnificent. Rest of it’s not bad either.
Probably my favourite Muse album. It's just the perfection of what makes Muse. The singing, the lyrics, the instruments, the sounds used. A leap over the already great absolution. Like any album that has 'Knights of Cydonia' can not be lower than an 8/10. 9 to potentially a perfect 10/10

Quite good but gets alot.
Pretty decent first listen but it felt very soy-core, real prog (or at least the one i like) is more abrasive. If you like bands like mars volta maybe muse will seem tame but it’s still worth a listen
The Queen influence is strong here, and generally that works in Muse’s favor. Matt Bellamy has many opinions about many things, and he seems passionate about them, but those feelings don’t always translate to entertaining, compelling songs.
I really enjoyed this. Was a little edgy, but not too much. I really enjoyed how the drum and guitar interacted with the vocals. Gave each song a very smooth feel
Cool start. The man in gold on the cover looks like the bald sterilised man from Game of Thrones. Yoooo, beat. Love the cover of the album. I know this song! (3rd one). The album is added to my liked albums in Spotify now. 4 songs added to my liked. Good album!
These guys are talented, no doubt. However I’m not sure if I can truly get down with nearly every song having to be this “epic” experience. I enjoy the mixture of rock and electronic music, but I would love at least a few more straightforward tracks. Don’t get me wrong, I can enjoy epic and spacey songs, but having that constantly present does not make for the best time, at least for me. Like I said though, the musicianship is great on this album. 3/5
This album isn't bad but I likely won't listen to most of the songs again
Just an overall great album. I've only heard a couple songs off the album as I don't listen to Muse all that much. I know I like them, but I don't think I've ever sat down and just listened to a whole album. I'm glad I did here, pretty much every song is great, and there's not much here I'd say is skipable. There's only a couple of songs I ever got tired of listening too, and the ones I did like, I really enjoyed. 8/10

Interesting but doesn't really touch me.
I expected to hate this, and it still somehow managed to be worse than I expected.
A bit underwhelming, but it was still a pleasant listen and there is some good stuff here. Not something I'll spin regularly, but wouldn't turn it off if this came on.

I think this is probably the last great Muse album for me. From here they did some good songs still, but the band as it exists now is so far removed from the one I was really into. This album though is solid front to back. I really, really like the fact that they're unafraid of going as big as possible. Massive sounds, big riffs, interesting instrumentation and lots of fist pumping stadium bangers, highlighted best with the ridiculously epic Knights of Cydonia.

Definitely weird, but totally enjoyable. Sort of reminded me of the soundtrack for a dystopian action film, which might be what they were actually going for.

Before listening to Black Holes and Revelations, the name of the band was the only thing I knew about Muse. I'm not sure how to classify Muse or where it fits in the overall music landscape because I cannot really define what Muse has to offer besides being some sort of alternative rock (I guess). There were tracks where the vocals reminded me of Radiohead, and other tracks that were reminiscent of some other band from the 90s that I can't quite pin down. "Starlight" was my favorite track, and the rest of the album was at least okay.
I expected to have a bunch of thoughts on Muse and whether their stuff has aged very well since my high school days when I was super into them, maybe some ideas on the distinctly Nolan-movie-style bombast, evaluating whether I still like it etc. What I thought about instead is how I never really listened very much to this as a full album, usually I just skipped between the singles. The big fuckoff Cosmic Arena Rock pieces show their age, but actually still land alright, but in between them are a whole lot of bad filler pieces that really drag the whole thing down

I think I was indoctrinated to some of these songs at just the right time, because I still get a really strong hit of nostalgia when I hear “Starlight,” “Supermassive Blackhole,” and “Assassin.” And “Knights of Cydonia” remains an amazing closer. But man, the other songs on here really do nothing for me; some of them are actually quite bad. So it’s a shame, but I’ll stick to the songs I like and ditch the rest.

Haven't grown out of it yet! Love the synths, loves the ridiculousness. Still regret not seeing them around the time of this album - I was on a run near Wembley Stadium around the time of this album and heard their soundcheck for the concert to support this album. Sounded amazing.
Overblown and overlong though thankfully with a decent amount of bombastic flair. I can see why some love Muse, I do and I respect that. Matt Bellamy has a great voice and is a phenomenonenal guitar player but something about the band and this album feels flat to me
I thought this was very good. The more pop orient d stuff is as good as anything, say, U2 ever did, plus some more interesting weirdo experimental elements to round it out. Interesting band I’d never really listened to before.

Muse were the first band I saw pull off the stadium rock show with complete authority. Such a massive sound from a 3 piece and as a non-fan at the time, they really impressed. This album was pretty cool, but I'm still not a Muse guy.
I enjoyed this more than I thought. A dramatic hybrid of Queen and Radiohead. Just a bit too dramatic though.

Great album! I spent a lot of time listening to and playing all the riffs on "Knights of Cydonia". It is such a great song and a perfect encapsulation of the whole album. Leading bass guitar, very upbeat drums, plenty of electronics, weird solos on guitar and a constant (and sometimes a bit annoying) vocal by Matt Bellamy. Every song on this album sticks to that concept, whether slower or faster, more melancholic or less, they have a recipe that works. It is not my favourite album by Muse, I find "Origin of Symmetry" a bit better and more diverse than Black Holes and Revelations, but still, it is a great album and I 100% recommend it to everyone.
Confession: I was a huge Muse fan in high school, and that obsession started with this album. Nostalgia definitely plays a role here, but listening back today I'm still floored by how well this album mixes the ostentatious, proggish rock the band was already known for with a heavy dose of electronics + a little Western pastiche to make a Space-Cowboy rock opera that somehow doesn't crumble to bits under the weight of all its ideas. Is it a little corny in parts? Yeah. Do all of Bellamy's conspiratorial, lizard government ideas make for great song material? LOL. Is 'Demonocracy' perhaps the most high-school edgelord lyric of all time? Most certainly. But despite the obligatory trappings of being a Muse album, Black Holes is so much more than the sum of its odd and contradictory parts. The instrumentals here still wow to this day and represent perhaps the most experienced and tasteful performances of the band's career – I've been trying to mimic the simple-but-speedy drum fill in 'Assassin' for years now and still need some practice. Every bass line, guitar solo, and drum fill steals the show without detracting from the holistic impact of each track, and though somewhat indulgent at times the album manages to pull off a cohesive feel without sacrificing each song's wildly individual feel. Muse hadn't jumped the shark yet, but they were definitely on the ramp at this point. Bellamy's introduction to synths on this album may have cratered the band's already divisive career from then on out, but damn if it didn't perfectly gel together into one LP that had a huge impact on high-school me. While I've grown out of my outright fandom for the band, I will never forget or forsake the album that contains all the tracks that made me pay attention to instrumentation for the first time. 'Knights of Cydonia' rocks so damn hard it made me start playing the guitar, a musical touchstone in its own right that put me on the path to being the indiehead I am today. Cheesy, stupid, and over-the-top it may be, but I'll be damned if I don't say that I love this LP.
I think the band has a great sound in every regard, from vocals, to instruments, to keyboards to general production. It is completely original and authentic, but I just can’t get into the songs at all. They fail to leave a mark worthy if their name and I imagine they are better and more entertaining live than for listening.
The electronic distortion and singing voice is not for everyone and I myself am still not 100% convinced by it, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a great rock album with couple of bangers that rock hard! 🤘🏻

I just couldn't get past how much like Radiohead this sounds, and not my favorite Radiohead either, but the earlier stuff I never liked that much. I listened to the album twice, hoping to hear more nuance, but it didn't happen. Why would I listen to this when I could listen to actual Radiohead? 2.5/5 rounded up bc I don't actively dislike it.
Great music. Sounds are melodic, have a sense of drama to them.
Really unique driving electronic rock. There's several stellar songs and much of the rest is pretty engaging and enjoyable. Soldier's Poem is a small miss, but the rest of this album is great.

Great rock album.
This is a good album, despite my abandonment of rock music for most of the beginning of the second millennium, I have given this album a listen or two. Had I stayed interested in rock, I'm sure it would have been a staple.
Awesome. Loved this since I was a teenager and it's been a while since I've listened to this. So a nostalgic ride. Plenty of great tracks on here and Knights of Cydonia is one badass album closer.

I understand why this album is on this list. Not one song was a sleeper. It seem like the album continue to pick up pace song by song. They reminded me of Queens of the Stone Age lead vocals, and of course queen harmonies. I heard a lot of 70s influence in this including Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin. I want to sit down with this again read the words and read some liner notes.
This is the final great Muse album. What a fun ride. Aside from a small lull in the middle with Soldier’s Poem, every song on this album is unique, hard hitting, and well written. Every instrument pulls its weight. Starlight, Supermassive Black Hole, and Knights of Cydonia are my favorites on this album.
Kind of a strange one. 25% absurd bangers, 25% pretty good, and 50% almost completely forgettable. 6/10

81/100: I’ve listened to a few Muse songs before and really loved them, so I was really excited going into this album. Maybe it’s because I hadn’t listened to much Radiohead when I first heard Muse, but on this listen through I was struck by how similar their sound was to that of Radiohead. They seem to be a softer around the edges version of Radiohead, but I think with the type of music the two bands produce, “soft around the edges” isn’t necessarily what you should be going for. I really liked this album, though, despite it underperforming when held up to Radiohead’s discography. That’s a pretty unfair comparison though, as most albums don’t hold up to Radiohead’s best albums. I’m also a big fan of the fact that no song in this album shares the same name as the album; however, in “Starlight,” the name of the album appears a few times. I like that vague subtlety.
Good symphonic rock album with alot of experiments
Good modern day rock
A band that was on the periphery of my musical universe. I was seriously impressed by the start of the album. A significant variety of structure and sound without ever losing their energy. A negative point for me is when Matt Bellamy uses high pitched vocals - but that is something that I will overcome with time (as I did with Geddy Lee - No, I am not comparing Muse to Rush). While all the tracks are good in their own way, none of them made me think 'I have to hear that again' or made my hair stand on end. This lack of that something extra stops it from being a 5 star album

Starts off amazingly and finishes spectacularly couple middle songs I didn't love but I didn't hate Singer reminds me of Thom Yorke
There's something fun about this, but then on the other hand it's sort of like if Thom Yorke got a lot cheesier, lost a lot of IQ points, and then started writing songs about space.
This album sounds very...intricate. You can hear the passion in every little aspect of the music, and you can hear the lengths they went to to make this album as good as possible. Though there are downsides, it's still a very solid project. 8/10
Boring
A lot heavier on the synth use then I would have originally thought from only having listened to the two major singles off of this record. I liked it and I just wish that some of the songs were a little more cohesive and tight. 3.5/5
I feel like the songs definitely have a deeper meaning and i’ll have to give it a second listen. Favorite song was “Soldiers Poem.” I would listen to it this album again but maybe as background music.

I thought I didn't like Muse, but maybe I was wrong. I get some Queen vibes, some Dream Theater, too. I like some of the droning being offset by the little soaring oohs, aahs, harmonies and such. I hadn't noticed any of that before since I wasn't listening with good headphones (I am this time). Assassin and Knights of Cydonia were the only songs I had heard before, which is a shame because I think Assassin is kind of weak. Supermassive Black Hole slaps. I really like the brush drum sound in Hoodoo, makes me think of Leprous and/or Bohren & Der Club of Gore. Somehow, I didn't realize Muse is prog. Cool!

Muse es una banda de controversias y cada disco es un capítulo más de eso. Este disco, para los que siguen a la banda desde sus comienzos, es el brinco a lo comercial; para los que siguen a la banda desde su éxito en la radio, este es todavía un disco complicado y hasta pesado; y para muchos fue el "gateway album". En lo personal, aunque no es mi número 1 de Muse, igual contiene un montón de favoritas y hace que me guste mucho. Se ven distintas facetas (el lado cursi, el lado rockero, el lado progresivo) y aún conserva el balance para seguir siendo un disco que se puede oír de principio a fin sin un problema.

Allegedly a masterpiece, listening to it in Falcon as we speak. Not quite sure what to make of it, almost seems to be trying too hard to be "a thing". Still working with it, but it's growing on me.
What an album. The drama, the performances, the innovation, the ability... Early 2000s muse were a force
Arpegiated synths, Queen vocal harmonies and some dirty basslines, all check for that classic Muse sound. At this point, they could still write some good songs as well so Starlight (shades of Coldplay), Map of the Problematique (more than shades of Depeche Mode), Supermassive Black Hole (Prince) and Invincible are all good, while the rest is OK. Does tail off towards the end.
As I was growing up, Muse were among my favourites after coming across a televised live show of theirs, around the time of their first record in 1999. Then came a series of albums, one stronger than the next, and their albums peaked around the time of this record - Black Hole and Revelations - stronger songs, great singles, and a well rounded overall. Probably not as good as its predecessor, Absolution. At least from my recollections... Of course, over the years, I kind of fell out of love with the band (I'm afraid to check how deep into the conspiracy nuttery Matt Bellamy might have dug himself into) - but even musically, they are what they are, and while I used to like their epic Rhapsodiacal nature, I don't love it anymore. Now, with that in mind, listening to this record brought over some nostalgia, and it's a well balanced album, yet feels a bit dated production wise. It's got great songs, and some stellar singles, but the 'maturity' that was felt they achieved when they released the record, doesn't exactly hit the mark with enough time passing, and it's not as fun and care-free as some of their previous albums. Anyway, I'm rambling. Good record, too self-important, this band has better ones.
I expected to hate this but it wasn't half bad. Knights of Cydonia was the clear standout, made everything else sound like b-sides, but that's a pretty high bar. I still get vaguely cunty vibes from muse but overall this is a 3/5.

I've never liked listening to Muse. They schooled me when i seen them live...so maybe that's where the appeal lies. Album wise they are too clean and maybe even overly produced, for me at least.
The songs that attempt to be really impactful (which is most of them) kind of overdo it and they fall flat for me, but I do find the more straightforward ones to be more enjoyable
An album I was already a little familiar with, but I never listened the whole way through from start to finish until today. To me, Muse tends to be a band of highs and lows and we have a mix of those here. "Starlight" and "Supermassive Black Holes" are classics, but sound a little saturated today - I think these tracks felt overplayed back then which kind of "tainted" these songs. Very nostalgic, though. I really enjoyed "Map of The Problematique" on this listen, there's a catchiness there that isn't present in the rest of the songs. "Knights of Cydonia" is a classic and probably the highlight of the album. When I first listened to the song back then, I remember one of my first thoughts being "I want to listen to this live some day" (which I ended up doing and it was great!). As someone who likes theatrical and dramatic music, it can be too much for me in this album. At moments, it even sounds vapid and souless. Mixed feelings. I don't feel strongly enough about the album as a whole to give it a 4 - as I said, there are lows and it does have some dull, uninspired moments and I just wanted to skip ahead at some points so I'll stick with a 3.

It turns out there's a lot of music from the aughts that I really like - I think it takes me back to having little kids and figuring it all out, so really nostalgic. I think about "Fireflies" by Owl City even "Clocks" by Coldplay from a few years earlier - there's a common sound that pulled us out of the crapfest that was the late 90s ("The Boy is Mine" by Brandi and Monica, anyone? WHY DON'T YOU HAVE LAST NAMES??). There's something Queen-like and Pink Floyd-like about Muse. For me, "Starlight" sums it up - it begins as some guitar that lets you know that these guys ain't forking around. Will I get screamed at Napalm style? But then...but then...the bright dulcet tones of the (electronic) piano and soaring vocals makes me wish I was spinning in circles with wheels on my feet at the Washington Elementary Spirit Nights at Jellybeans (RIP). Man, that was the life. Thanks for the nostalgia trip, Muse. A solid 4 from me.
Meh. Meh meh meh meh. Honestly, I liked the variety of sounds, but Muse always had a try-hard sound to me. Also, you know Starlight totally stole the melody from that ABC song, I mean, come on. Come on!
This album goes pretty hard and there's lots of hits on here. I like the energy and the use of both good synths and guitar on this album. There's some decent political overtones here but for the most part I don't connect that much with the lyrics and the music can be a bit dramatic at times. But overall I think it's a solid album and it's been very influential on a lot of modern bands
This never really worked for me. To me, Muse was an amalgamation for various influences (bands - Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Jeff Buckley, styles - rock, glam, and prog) that results in more is less. They are consistent though. Like their prior releases, this is calculated space jams aimed at arena shows. On that level it succeeds. It is almost as if AI created semi prog rock music for the masses in the mew millennium.
This was much better than I expected it to be. A lot of this album sounded like a more modern version of U2 and I thought the production was very strong. Like U2 though I felt like some of it was a little too "over the top" and forced sounding especially towards the end of the album.

I find muse very similar to Foo Fighters. Good band and I enjoy listening but usually get bored after a few songs. This is fine with some cool highlights.

This was a solid album. Unique in their own way.
I enjoyed this more than expected, especially the spacey, ethereal elements, some of the groove-y guitar work, and the more experimental instrumentals. Not a fan of Matt Bellamy's vocals, which unfortunately kill it for me and would likely keep me from going back to this.
Thought this one was pretty good - a mixture of hard rock and prog rock, although some of the synths sounded too much like video games. I guess that complements some of the lyrics and why some people tagged this as "Space Rock." Liked Supermassive Black Hole.
This sounds like Radiohead decided they cared about what the music sounds like and made a space rock album that isn't actually about space. Weird in all the right ways. Best track: City of Delusion
4/5. Never thought I liked Muse but enjoyed the album, perhaps there is hope for Radiohead too! Vocals are both strong and haunting as well as quite annoying. Suspect it could could have been a 5/5 more often than not with other reviewers.

Another post-2000 album that didn't survive long enough to stay on the current version of the list, which is fine. This should never have been on the list. Muse is butt rock masquerading as prog, it's arena garbage for people who think they are smart, it's pseudo-intellectual pap, it's music for people who think they are smarter than the room but never bother to enter rooms they know will challenge them. It's music for people who think it's clever to talk shit about NIckelback. It's an evolutionary stepping stone to Imagine Dragons. Burn it and bury it in a shallow grave.
Lots of highs (Knights of Cydonia is incredible) but also lots of lows. Felt like half the album was the same song. 3.5 stars.

this album is very good, reminds me on radiohead in a way. there’s definitely a lot of inspiration from the likes of OMD or even REM. this is a very good indie rock album, 7.7/10
Five stars for how much I used to slay Knights of Cydonia on Guitar Hero
I always thought Muse had this samey sound that made there songs all kind of blend together, but Black Holes has great, well defined sounds throughout every song. Very good.
Yuk an over produced mess basically a pop album made to sell a lot of records , but it could have been do much more as the tunes are there I don’t know who produced it but it’s as if the record company said we just want hits Basically Coldplay with a bit heavier guitars on it
The opening track sounds like dated prog rock although it redeems itself with a good whack of noise at the end. The second song, Starlight, sounds contrived - like it was intended to be "the single". I was surprised to read that it was the second single. With the singles out of the way, the album gets better again. Assanin starts the same way as the opening track but redeems itself much sooner. The trend continues with most of the other songs (Knights of Cydonia being an excellent example) where the vocals sound like prog rock but the music is fresh and cookin' with attitude. They experiment with a lot of different sounds and this really works. For example the solo in City of Delusion has an exotic sound that is far less heavy than the rest of the song. Most the songs have 5 potential. There are a couple of plain vanilla songs which isn't fatal, but the one thing that is tough to deal with is the vocals reminding me of prog rock. I'm not talking about PG era Genesis prog rock; they remind me of the prog rock that still causes nightmares - like Styx. This makes the 5 fall to a 3 but I'll bump to 4 since I do like the majority of the music and the 3 rating won't make my nightmares turn into The Grand Illusion.
I was only familiar with “Supermassive Black Hole” from this LP. Occasionally I would try a Muse track on one of my riding playlists, but they didn’t last too long, outside of “The Second Law: Unsustainable”. On this LP they (or should I say he) has an interesting tuned-down guitar sound that gives it a dark EDM feel. There’s a lot of different influences: symphonic metal, hard rock, prog, a bit of a Uriah Heep or Queen influence, plus heavy subject matter and apocalyptical lyrics. It's a tad bloated and ostentatious – you would hope they don’t take themselves too seriously, but they do. I prefer the heavier layered tracks like Map of the Problematique and Assassins and the crazy guitar (?) solo near the end of “Invincible”, which was needed 'cause it sounded like a U2 track up to that point.
Wiki mentions the bands that influenced Muse and I was very surprised that they didn’t mention Radiohead. The lead vocalists of Muse whines and wails exactly like Thom Yorke. I listened to this album twice and both times when it was done Spotify sequed seamlessly into Radiohead and Muse sounded almost the same. A noisy pompous Radiohead though. This album was much more listenable when there was less singing, eg Knights of Cydonia, but I’d rather have the original

I'll be honest I wasn't feeling like relistening to this album so I put on their new album that came out today instead. Probably a mistake as it was a huge waste of time. Yeah I really just couldn't give two shits about Muse. Possibly the most uncool band on the planet.

First album of this project! 1) Take a Bow: Really liked, gives Radiohead vibes. 2) Starlight: Much more its own, memorable jingle. 3) Supermassive Black Hole: Heavier rock, enjoy the vocals a lot here, favourite so far. 4) Map of the Problematique: Nice beat here, good flow. 5) Soldier's Poem: Slower and shorter than previous songs, but a nice break from the heavier songs and nice sound. 6) Invincible: Another slower one, but I like the building into more instruments, faster progression, always like songs like this. 7) Assassin: Heaviest rock so far, probably least favourite 8) Exo-Politics: Nothing of note for me here other than an engaging riff. 9) City of Delusion: Better progression than the past two songs and captures engagement again. 10) Hoodoo: Again, slower and tries to build but ultimately fails. 11) Knights of Cydonia: Bit of a different sound, more of an alien and western (?) vibe, liking this one much more than previous few songs. Ends in a satisfying conclusion. 12) Glorious: Quite a weak song to end on, could've been placed earlier since I like the song and it builds into something nice, but not as strong as previous song. Overall, some good songs here that stand out but gets to be a bit samey in places and can definitely feel the influences of the Killers and Radiohead in Parts.
I wasn't at all familiar with this band. I certainly didn't dislike it. At times very much enjoyed it. Lots of production and earnest vocals. At times it felt like a Radiohead clone.

21/08/2022 Muse – Black Holes and Revelations 5/5 Muse is one of my favourite bands, at least their early period including The Resistance. It is one of those that you need to go to one of their concerts before you die just because how incredible the experience would be. Matt Bellamy’s voice is also, in my opinion, one of the best male voices of all the time, and I love his vocal range and use of falsetto in songs like Supermassive Black Hole or Micro Cuts (of Origin of Symmetry). Black Holes and Revelations is, maybe nor their best, but their most regular album, with great singles like Supermassive Black Hole or Knights of Cydonia; and incredible not so well-known songs like Take a Bow. I think I’m biased and probably my review won’t be objective, but I can’t leave aside how much I like them. Take a Bow – 5/5 I think this is the hidden gem of the album (and we are just at the beginning). Take a Bow is a great crescendo song that is perfect for introducing the listeners to the sounds and feelings of the album. Probably my second favourite song of the album, the initial synth arpeggio, the transition, and the rocking end are fantastic. All of that ornated with the fantastic Matt Bellamy voice. Starlight – 4/5 One of the weak legs of the album, not because the song is not great, but because it clashes a bit against the album and maybe even Muse’s previous sound. Apart from that, it is a fantastic pop song with a touch of rock. Supermassive Black Hole – 5/5 If I remember correctly, this is the song that introduced me to Muse (maybe from one of early 2000's FIFA’s games?). Again, maybe a little bit more pop-rock that usual, but the right amount to not become too different. Again, absolutely great falsetto vocals, and the core of the song. Map of the Problematique – 4.5/5 Another great song, but this one needs a little bit more to be perfect for me. Maybe it needs a bit of uniqueness compared to what we have listened previously in the album. Love the guitar riff and piano that the song is built around. Soldier’s Poem – 4/5 Another weak leg of the album. It is the type of ballad Muse normally composes and it should have needed to stand out from the rest to be better. Invincible – 4.5/5 Another slow song, but this one has the things to make itself unique. The marching band drums and the build up to the guitar solo and the end of the song are great. It is also a very good middle point to the album and transition to the “B-side”. Assassin – 5/5 Turning towards the more “heavy-rock” sound of the band, it is quite powerful and successful in what it tries to achieve. Exo-Politics – 4/5 A bit generic and flat-sounding, but not bad. Very recognizable Muse sound. City of Delusion – 4.5/5 Great at creating a very exotic atmosphere (“Wild-west” with the guitar riff and trumpet, more “oriental-inspired” with its strings). Good and different rock song. Hoodoo – 5/5 Following the lead of City of Delusion, this track starts as a ballad that continues the atmosphere of the last song, but evolves into a more dramatic and grandiloquent sound, very similar to Space Dementia of Origin of Symmetry. That makes it very interesting. Knights of Cydonia – 5/5 My favourite Muse song, and the strongest of the album. What a 6-minute masterpiece. It is great developing a story, not only in the little lyrics it has (and the context behind them), but also through the evolution of its sound as it progresses. It is also great at gathering energy thorough until it all explodes at the end. Glorious – 4.5/5 I am one of those who believes that Knights of Cydonia could have been the best closure song to this album, ending it with a great clash of energy. This song is not bad at all, nonetheless. Another space-rock inspired track that follows Muse most knowledgeable structure and sound.

While Radiohead is still my male manipulator music of choice, this is a good entry into that genre. I still love supermassive black hole and knights of cydonia but the rest of the album also goes hard, especially the first two songs. Overall, right up my alley and it’s getting an objective 4 but subjective 5

I don't know where I've been but I don't think I've heard much Muse. At the very least I don't have an opinion going into this album. I do like the Martian tableau on the front cover, though the horses confuse me a little. It all sounds great, very polished and grand. Starlight, which I'll call the title track, and Supermassive Black Hole are pretty good but let down a bit by the lyrics. I like the sound of Soldier's Poem and Assassin. Several other songs don't grab me at all, like the theremin-y Invincible, Exo-Politics, and Hoodoo. Overall like it but don't quite love it. 3.5 stars
I didn’t like Queen the first time around. Chucking them in a blender with a bit of The Strokes and a little U2 makes me like them even less this time around.

Muse can’t decide if they want to be Radiohead, Coldplay, British alternative from a few years earlier, a grunge band, or a wannabe metal band. This identity crisis leaves Muse sounding like they’re constantly trying to reference something instead of incorporating their influences into their own sound. The obvious Thom Yorke imitation vocals really place this into a lower category for me.
I really enjoy this album. It is creative and a few of the songs are pretty mid 2000’s iconic. I think the muse get a bad wrap because their newer music is no where near their old stuff, and because of this people dislike this album. I can understand hating this album because you played Knights of Cydonia on guitar hero a couple thousand times but for me, Matt Bellamy’s voice is solid and I miss the old Muse 4/5

A brilliantly crafted album that makes me feel things that I can't be bothered feeling anymore. It doesn't resonate emotionally like it did when I was younger, but I can't deny the artistry.
I forgot how good this album was, really wish Muse could get back to this level one day. I have some minor issues with the 2nd half of the album, but the highs more than make up for it. Love the layers of guitar and synth that build up such a big sound.
Gorgeous futuristic and nice lyrics
I've never listened to Muse because I was skeptical of the hype surrounding them. This is album is an epic listen. The instrumentation is very creative and evocative throughout. His voice is incredibly effortless. I get the sense the album had an overarching theme. Sounds like: Radiohead, heavy Smashing Pumpkins, romantic/classical, White Stripes Standout tracks: "Take a Bow" was a great intro. "Starlight" of course is a bopper "Invincible" and "Knights" had epic moments
I knew two of the songs. This isn’t my usual type of music but I actually liked it. I thought it was a kind of abrupt change at track 5, which kind of threw me. I liked the faster songs better than the slow ones, but overall it’s a good album. I’ll probably listen to a few songs again.
Really solid album. Starlight is extremely catchy and fun. The slow crescendo throughout Invincible pays off in a thunderous climax and Knights of Cydonia is a great rock song with prog elements.

Sounding like a cross between Coldplay, U2 and Radiohead with "anthems" for the noughties generation this is generally as dull and insipid as you would expect, although to be fair "Supermassive Black Hole" is quite a sinister sounding track with a catchy chorus.
Yeah again why is this album on this list, not that exciting or interesting, definitely nothing new when it was launched? They are one of those bands that are made for adverts they have like 30 seconds of intrest in a couple of songs but the rest is just dull.

Already a fan of Muse but havn't listened to most of their albums fully. This album is pretty good.
A pretty decent alternative album. Muse has always made some interesting music. This album definitely fits that bill. Their songs sound some what spacey and futuristic. Starlight is a solid song and knights of cyadonia has some great instrumentals. The rest of the album isn’t too much up my alley but I found it enjoyable. 5.9/10

I temes com 'Map of the Problematique' o 'Supermassive Black Hole' el confirmen com l'opera magna de la banda. Encara estava a anys vista la davallada increïble de qualitat que vindria a partir de 'The 2nd Law' (fins a 'Simulation Theory' com a mínim). Aquí encara eren imparables
A lot of people find Muse overrated and I get it. But this album holds a special place in my heart and takes me back to my 16 year old self. Man, I just want to go to space.
This is an album that I would've enjoyed in Junior High. It's over the top. It's a bit edgy. Already quite familiar with the hits of this album, I went in to it expecting to be disappointed and was pleasantly surprised. I'm not sure this is an album everyone needs to listen to before they die, but if music like Muse is your thing, I think you'l love it.
This album was fantastically epic. Perfect soundtrack to the world ending. Knights of Cydonia bangs.

All-around it's pretty good. The problem is that I just can't figure out what they were aiming for. I'm glad that guitar hero gave them their 15 minutes because otherwise I think they wouldn't have been on anybody's radar at all.

Some groups can be expressed mathematically, as the summation of particular influences the group is more than happy to acknowledge. Beatles + Black Sabbath + Pixies = Nirvana. Orange Juice + Strokes = Franz Ferdinand. With today's band, it's Genesis + Queen + Jeff Buckley + Radiohead = Muse. I can't be the only one to feel trepidation upon seeing the first side of that equation. Each one of those acts has some fundamental aspect that may very well deter the uncommitted listener (yes, even Jeff Buckley). The result threatens to be simultaneously stuffy, affected, histrionic and cold. And the result is stuffy, affected, histrionic and cold. Muse were one of the late-90s British groups to reject Britpop, with its punky irreverence and kitchen-sink concerns, instead borrowing excessive virtuosity, conceit and tone from prog whilst leader Matt Bellamy insisted on singing every damn note in Jeff Buckley's falsetto. My fellow travellers on life's long journey, you should know by now that a rejection of punk will never win my favour. Also, Muse's resuscitation of prog does not feel inspired, but just the inevitable recycling of everything recyclable from the past. At some point, some band was going to try and bring back The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, and Muse thought it might as well be them. That paragraph didn't mention the other band, the band who has overshadowed Muse for their entire existence: Radiohead. In my review of The Bends, I discussed how The Bends accidentally invented the next decade's trend of landfill indie. Muse obviously nick plenty from Radiohead, but far more from OK Computer and Kid A. Now, I have no qualms whatsoever with such outright theft, as long as they do something with it. And to their credit, Muse do do something with their loot; unfortunately, they tend to do bad things. Black Holes and Revelations (yes, that title is wank) is the consequence of seizing upon one facet of a myriad of artists, then intensifying it to the exclusion of all other concerns. So, as stated before, Matt Bellamy's falsetto stems from Jeff Buckley's use of the falsetto. I've never been persuaded that Jeff Buckley is the greatest male singer of the 90s, but I understand that his falsetto broadened the dominant male range of the time, and was meant to extend how widely male singers could reach for. Just singing falsetto drastically misses that point, and incidentally is extremely annoying. Likewise, Muse steal Queen's theatricality, but forget to take along the camp fun Queen revelled in. The listener is put in the bizarre situation of hearing Muse attempt their own version of Peter Gabriel's Slipperman, all the while wishing that Muse would just get Phil Collins involved somewhere. And I've written before that OK Computer's student politics seem jejune nowadays, but where do Muse go with such concerns? Conspiracy theories and ancient aliens building the pyramids. The last parts would suggest that Muse have some sense of humour to lighten this broth, but this album is delivered with iron solemnity, as a deeply profound article. Even the deliberately comic bits (e.g., Knights of Cydonia) feel perfunctory when taken with the whole of the album, as if Muse just seek to avoid accusations of disappearing up their own fundament (and thus slip even further up the back passage). Okay, I admit I would have relented somewhat, in that Supermassive Black Hole has a decent, straightforward groove that redeems the album slightly, but then I took a walk. On that walk, I realised that Genesis + Queen + Jeff Buckley + Radiohead = Emo ELP. Emo ELP: Two words, five syllables, one unsalvageable album.

Best Song: Knights of Cydonia. Although there are many great tracks on this album, I have to give it to this one, largely because of how unique it is, and the intense feelings of nostalgia I have for it. Worst Song: Soldier's Poem. Amidst the epic, grandiose tracks that begin and end this album, this sleepy lullaby in the middle falls short. Overall: Muse somehow is able to create this epic and expansive sound that doesn't come off as cheesy or self-important. The vocals always carry this slightly ethereal wisp and the instrumentation feels both science fiction and fantasy. For reasons that I can't fully articulate, this music feels like hymns for the space age.
Love this album. The synth/electronic/rock works really well in my opinion. Also really enjoy the heavy basslines throughout the album. "Starlight" and "Knights of Cydonia" were my favourite tracks.
This and Origin of Symmetry are my favorite Muse albums. Too bad they get worse and worse with every album they put out. It's music that was probably made in a lab and if I were to sniff the album I would get glitter in my nose, but it's still really damn good. The best song on the album, also the best song of the entire Muse discography is without a doubt "Knights of Cydonia". Other great songs: "Starlight", "City of Delusion", "Glorious" and "Supermassive Black Hole".
I really struggle with Muse - an unpopular opinion I know. Just sounds too theatrical for me.
i love muse, and i knew the headliners of this album starlight, supermassive blackhole and knights of cydonia but the other songs are also great, special mention of map of the problematique. Only critique is that since hearing the live version of knights i cannot hear that one anymore without the once upon a time in the west intro
When Radiohead stopped making proper guitar albums after OK Computer, other bands moved into the space that had been abandoned. Coldplay took the softer end, and built a stadium sized career out of it, and Muse ditto with the louder end. It is no surprise that the bombastic end of Radiohead crossed with a healthy dose of Queen also turned out to be a stadium-filling beast. With magpie like references to other moments of bombastic excess (Soundgarden, Ennio Morricone, ELO), this is cleverly composed, schmickly produced, and expertly played, but really, at the end of the day, this is sound and fury, signifying nothing.
This is a band that I've long meant to get to know better, so I'm glad this album showed up today. This band scares the sh*t out of me. I mean that in a great way. Not scared as in I'm frightened of any danger; it's more akin to intimidation. And it's why I'm drawn to them. Their music, at least the few songs I've heard over the past few years when I first stumbled across them, can be complicated, layered, and tense. I love that. This is the first full album of theirs to which I've ever listened in its entirety. They can be a bit more straightforward at times than I had experienced previously, and I like the range it shows and the accessibility it provides. Masterful musicians, writers, and arrangers. Performances are incredible. I shall spend more time with them, I know.

I enjoyed this. I didn't follow the band until The Resistance. Their music is a great blend of many things I like. This record is no exception.
There's a lot here but being greedy I wanted more...Muse is always one of those interesting bands that I know their hits but have never sat and listened to a full album...bad on me.
Quite a good listen for me personally. Supermassive Black Hole will always be baseball from Twilight, but Starlight was one of my favorite songs growing up. Everything else was new to me. Melodically, it gets a little bit predictive, but nonetheless pleasant. I also really like the rock instrumentals going on.

Extraordinary album, from Take a bow to Glorious. I got to know Muse for The Resistance. Nowadays, I dont which one is my favourite. The artistic concepts generated by Bellamy's band are perfectly executed in this album.
Muse is one of those bands that ticks the checkboxes but rarely, if ever, achieves true excellence. As to this particular album, I find it OK, but... It offers such an intense presentation that it crosses over to the annoying side of things with almost every track.

Take a Bow: the tinkling lasted about 3 minutes too long. The blame at the end was something. Longest outro ever. Supermassive Black Hole: more like supermassive suck hole, amirite? Map of the problematique: equally as loud as the previous three songs. No decrescendo/crescendo, just loud. Set the metronome to 140 bpm and go. Soldiers poem: first down tempo song, almost lullaby like. Somehow still loud though.... Invincible: quieter intro. I have bass boosted on my earbuds as most songs are quiet on bass lines, but these guys pump up the bass. Cool little bass riff halfway through. Hoodoo: started surfer rock/Mexicali, ended goth rock. Weird. Glorious: I don't think I like this album. It's not necessarily "bad," but it's an album that has a lot of notes, but none of them memorable. Almost like a more frantic Coldplay. PS: I did not realize that Glorious was the last track of the album when I made the above note. I am glad it is over.
I don't like everything Muse has done, but I really like this album. There's such a cool mix of fun theatric songs mixed with more "serious" rock songs, often going back and forth in the same track. Just about every song has many nuanced layers; it's a real listener's album as Gina Gleason likes to say.
Not bad, but it didn't have any sticking power with me. I listened to it twice and I can't remember any songs other than Knights of Cydonia. I do remember there's a few that have Queen vibes and that's pretty cool. Overall, it's just not for me though.
The last truly amazing Muse album. Knights of Cydonia is a GOAT stadium anthem. Starlight hasn't aged very well for me but apart from that this still holds up extremely well. Map of the Problematique is a severely underrated Muse track.
I could never get into Muse, their sound just doesn’t work for me. You want to do the mainstream Pink Floyd stuff? Cool. You want to do the weird Radiohead stuff? Also fine. But together, it doesn’t gel very well IMO. I can appreciate that they’re solid musicians and have big ambitions, but this largely left me cold. 3 stars for effort, but my personal rating is a D+
Muse is a great band, and their conspiracy theory vibes are bit harder to stand in this day and age, but this album is absolutely fantastic. Knights of Cydonia is an all-time great tune. Starlight, Map of the Problematique, Assassin, and Supermassive Black Hole are all top tier songs.
This is where I start to fall off with Muse. This album is really great, but the pop elements start to outgrow their proggy britches here and it really begins to spoil the whip-smart arena prog niche they’ve carved for themselves. Still, Knights of Cydonia is a JAM. 3.5
Goddamn I love Matthew Bellamey's voice. His falsetto is so clean, I hate it! Starlight is great. Supermassive Black Hole is entertaining. Soldier's Poem is very Queen-esque. Knights of Cydonia is just so good. Gosh this album was such ear candy I can't help giving it a high ranking even if it doesn't converge on some grand ideal.

Whilst a fun enough listen, I ultimately found all the bombast rather empty and unsatisfying.
Hard to judge as it was played to death when it came out and they recieved a fair bit of criticism for being over the top and I seem to remember they were becoming unfashionable at the time this album came out. I prefer Origin of Symmetry but this album is good too. Despite heavy influence from Radiohead and Jeff Buckley Muse are still very much their own thing (no one ever talks about their Rachmaninov influence though!). This album is a good representation of their epic, stadiumy music. I don't mind the over the topness and I really enjoyed listening to "Starlight" and "Map of the Problematique" again.

Of its time, a bit overblown for me
It's like fake grass. SILVER fake grass, just like the grass in planet K-69420. It feels artificial. But it's undeniably fun to play on once in a while.
For a supposed progressive rock group, Muse manages to come off as quite a superficial bunch. Every song here follows a formula, which wouldn’t be an issue if the formula were compelling, but it isn’t. Very few of these tunes are catchy, and even fewer interesting. The music is bombastic and decidedly safe, almost distractingly so, and the lyrics are humdrum bullshit. They want to make a political statement, but the best they can muster is jejune blather about fighting corruption, fighting for your rights, fighting the establishment, fighting for what? Freedom, of course. If you’d ever wondered what The Vines would sound like if they ventured into space, look no further. This sort of vapid, milk-and-water nonsense might appeal to you if you’re the sort of person that likes corporate dad rock, but if you can’t dig it, steer clear.

Decent modern pop
i really enjoyed this music, the first song started off with a creepy vibe and i loved it. the music overall was really interesting my critique is that it was a little heavy at times but other than that it was really good.
I've often not known how to feel about Muse. At their best (whatever that means on a personal level) they seem a perfect modern mix of Queen and Radiohead with a metal-ish bent but with strong melodic tendencies. Then other times they turn me off with overblown production, overly-emotive vocals and just...too much. This album has always had a bit of both but I think overall it's a really good intro to whether someone's going to like them or not - i'll start with the annoying because there's less of that for me on this album: the only track I really dislike is "Assassin" - it's the too much/too dense/too loud all crystalized. Overall the album (and band) do suffer from a sameness and density that's occasionally tough to get through in long stretches for me. But at the same time the album is an interesting and rather diverse platter of weird and haunting melodies - you have a very accessible "Starlight" which has a very late80s new wave melodic sound to it in the verses...."Supermassive Black Hole" sounds a bit like a different band - took me a while to like that one with affected falsetto vocals but the thickythic riffs are pretty compelling. Speaking of riffs, "Map of the Problematique" is a pretty great one. "Exo-Politics" is a rather basic (for Muse) composition but a good straightforward rock song. Nice to finally hear a bit of dynamics (i.e. acoustic guitar) on the beginning of "City of Delusion" even if it (of course) launches into a much bigger song - albeit with different middle-eastern tonalities on this one (which carry into the next one "Hoodoo" - speaking of which...Jeff Buckley vocal influence on the beginning there...?). I can see why some would dislike this band for the same reasons others would love them: a larger-than life loud arena guitar rock band that utilizes a ton of electronic effects and overwrought vocals... it's not a band for everyone, but I'll take this over something like Lou Reed's* shit any day. 7/10 4 stars. *(yes it's a personal vendetta to crap on Lou Reed and his acolytes when/wherever possible even when there's absolutely no reason. Because he was a musical mockery and that's enough of a reason any day.)
