Reviews (page 7 of 13)

Never heard this one but seemed like solid Bowie. He kind of lives in that 4 range for me. Time was very good.

Like many of the Bowie albums we've heard, I thought this was really good, but was missing that wow factor for me that so many others see in him. It was definitely well put together. The piano solo in the title track is awesome and way jazzier than what you hear on most rock albums. BUT "Time" did verge on musical theater but not in the funny Meat Loaf way.

Definitely not his best, but still a good album.

Bowie's genius is on uneven ground with this record. Here we have ALADDIN SANE and a lad insane all rolled into one as Ziggy Stardust goes to America. For me there's something exhausted, lashing out and unresolved about a number of these tracks but held in a certain light or listened to on the right day it delivers another dose of Spidery sounds.

Excellent

Not his best

This almost has too much emotional history for me to sift through. My mother had that hairstyle (from the cover) in 1973/4. My cousin was obsessed with album, even up till recently. When my folks bought the vinyl, I spent a lot of time sitting on the floor, poring over the lyrics on the gatefold and singing along to every song over and over again. I had no idea what they meant. Being a child and all. I was quite tentative going back to this - like seeing a childhood friend after decades and wondering if you have anything in common any more. I was almost too wound up in overthinking to listen properly. And then I let go, listened again and remembered. Some of the songs are a bit off the wall and nonsensical but they still pack a punch. What I did miss is all the crackles from the vinyl so maybe I need to drag it out.

I love this album. It might be the first Bowie record I ever owned, which may factor into a nostalgic connection. I always enjoyed the raw production of this album, and on this listen, I really appreciated the bizarre disconnected lyrics — I don't know that I could decipher the meaning of just about every song, which somehow makes me like it even more. I think this is a 4.5, but as I don't think it quite merits a 5, I rounded down. But, damn, this may not be Bowie's all-time greatest group of songs, and it's still fuckin' brilliant. I miss him more each time we spin one of his albums.

Not my favorite Bowie album, still amazing. The guy wasn't human.

Good album. Some of the best Bowie we’ve had.

When people think of the mythos of David Bowie, I think most people remember him with the lightning bolt on his face. It's an iconic statement that's definitively glam. Alongside T. Rex, Bowie would develop the idea and sound of glam throughout the 70's. Theatrical elements aside, glam was all about giving rock a fun edge. Poppier hooks and additional instrumental arrangements gives an extra edge over the other rock stylings of the day. How's the songs? Pretty good, but not great. This is not his best work, not by a long shot, but it's still memorable.

Favourites: • Aladdin Sane (1913-1938-197?) • Lady Grinning Soul

I can stop telling people I don't like David Bowie now

Great album! Loved the piano snd recording quality.

Decent album, a bunch of songs I hadn't heard before. Title track is probably my least favorite.

While not as good as the 3 albums that preceded this one but still very good m and tail end of my favorite Bowie era. 4.5 star for sure.

Panic in Detroit is my favorite from this record, but the album is pretty strong throughout. Among the best of Bowie’s and the Ziggy Stardust era was his peak.

Not sure which era of Bowie this is, but the record sounded like Rock all the way through. Not as many stand-out songs as some of the Bowie record but also not as much of the random experimental tracks. I'd listen again.

Still waiting for Ziggy Stardust, but this one wasn't bad. Actually it was good, probably my favorite Bowie we've listened to so far. Good stuff.

I like this one better as a whole than some of the other Bowie albums I’ve received. The hits are always great, but I’ve found the albums a bit more uneven. This one is thematic and consistent. I guess this is Thin White Duke Bowie, but I try avoid too much research in this. Punk with dance beats. 4/5

While not quite as brilliant as Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane is still a well produced and enjoyable album to listen to. I mean, it’s glam rock era Bowie - how can’t you vibe with that?

Really good album Barr a couple of tracks which I find just too much. This has a lot of classic Bowie sound before the experimental industrial stage which I draw a line at for my taste!

This is a great era of Bowie! Some really fun rock. I have a big admission, I'm not sure I knew that Jean Genie was by Bowie.. gun to my head definitely would have thought it was like ZZ Top or something. So confused. But overall this was a really good listen and lifted my spirits

Sometimes I don't know if I like David Bowie's music so much as I just like David Bowie, but this album wasn't bad. I don't know if I'd go back to it, but I wouldn't turn it off either.

500th album I rate - Lots of playing around with the rhythm, I feel like some erratic slightly off tempo bits add some blues/chaotic feel to the album. Pianowork is great throughout, second half of the album is very very good. Second listen deserved.

haven't listened to this in a loong time, appreciated different things about it now - a very odd record

Fun album. Mostly glam-rock but with a lot of experiments and musical detours, like the wild jazz piano on the title track or the cabaret style of “Time.”

Wow I really adore that manic piano playing in the title track. At times it's classical, romantic, experimental, bluesy, and everything in between. The bass riff repeating underneath is a super nice grounding element too. "Let's Spend the Night Together" is one of my favorite Bowie songs. That chorus can live in my head for days and weeks. Really solid all around. Sometimes I don't find myself getting too excited when a Bowie album is put on for some reason. I didn't listen to him much growing up so maybe that's it.. but every time I hear some of his songs I'm always like "oh yea, this is great!"

Felt a bit generic at times, but it is still Bowie. Not-so-good Bowie is still good music.

This is one of Bowie's most solid albums end to end. It might lack spectacular, but every song is pretty good. Well worth a listen.

Hell of an album, gets very campy at points and it's one of the greats

An enjoyable listen, even if it doesn't really have much of a "wow" factor. But it does highlight a variety of influences and shows an evolving musical taste. To be honest, I'd never even heard of this album until now - and not sure I'll bother to listen again given how much music is out there - but it was a nice addition to the "1001 album" list.

Very enjoyable. I like the blues influence and the piano, saxophone, and bass parts were particularly fun and distinct.

All time pivot

Awesome

Another good Bowie album. Definitely a unique artist that I need to listen to more of.

Every Bowie album I've listened to rules. Maybe not every song is a banger, but I can usually find something I really like in each song. And his versatility is just insane. Time might be an all time fav. Has a creepiness to it that I'm about. Love that he has Rolling Stones and Beatles covers on the albums that we listened to. I think this is the 3rd that's on here and I'm sure we'll get another 4 at least. Looking forward to it!

Of course Bowie made the best glam albums of the era. Not consistent but consistently interesting this has two of the greatest - Drive In Saturday and The Jean Genie. A pleasure.

Top 3 Songs: 1 - The Jean Genie (9) 2 - Time (6) 3 - Cracked Actor (5)

An excellent listen. It might not trump Ziggy Stardust for me, but tremendous nonetheless. 4.5*

It’s brilliant obviously, will spend more time with it. Only issue I find with earlier Bowie that I’m not already familiar with is that all the music in my teens paid homage, from Grunge to Britpop, so it’s difficult not to think of them. And some of that was bollocks.

If the stated goal of 1001 Albums is to inject you with a broad scope of great music from the last 70 years, the unstated (implied) goal has always seemed to be getting you turned onto Bowie. He has by far the most number of albums on the list— 9 albums as a solo artist— and, for our group, the first album we ever got was Hunky Dory, which set us off to a very Bowie start. That album is a great opener to Bowie because, more conventional it may be, you get the sense that something much more interesting is brewing under the surface with him. We’re 220 albums in and— by my count— 6 Bowie albums have showed up. Nothing has grabbed me by the throat as much as the end of Ziggy Stardust, an album where you feel like the whole of the world is resting on Bowie’s tortured shoulders. But for such a high height, that’s a hard ladder to climb twice. Some of the albums have been fine. The Philly Soul one— can’t even remember its name— was notable for the Lennon collab, but you get a sense that the more he retreats into mania and drug addiction, so, too, do his albums, into question marks and dead ends that start to feel unapproachably vague. Aladdin Sane is a mix of this. The unbelievably good “Time” is on here, which is as raw and pained and theatrical as any on Ziggy Stardust. Panic in Detroit is amazing, a song whose lyrics just add to the frenzy and confusion and surrealism of the whole album. With Bowie, other than Ziggy Stardust, I'm always left a little wanting. I never feel like he sticks the landing in his albums. I don’t know what makes me feel this, but they seem like ambitious projects that nonetheless feel incomplete, or with some songs that feel half-baked, like he had the musicians or engineers take over the track. It’s for some reason more unapproachable to me than any art rock of this period, and I’m always left wondering why that is. He’s no doubt an incredible songwriter, in his own way. You’re not gonna get McCartney songs. You’re going to feel a tiny bit anxious, disorientated, windswept after hearing Bowie. I love the manic, tragic fun of this album. Sometimes I feel like he’s doing that Stones sound better than they do. And the playing is incredible. This is still an essential perspective on the “feel” of the art and rock worlds of the 70’s. That feeling that everything, Bowie included, is about to totally fall apart. I rate this a 4. My gut just can’t give it a 5, even though I’m probably on at least 10 listens at this point, and I delayed this review for 3 months to see if I missed anything. Some bright, incredible moments, but not as “complete” feeling as his previous album.

the best

It is a good album, but it doesn’t rise to the level of excellence one expects from Bowie. There are some bangers here, but not enough.

One of the all time great records from one of the all time great artists. I'm not sure there's anything else to be said about Ziggy. He's the reason I got into music. An album like this would be considered most other artists' best offering, but Bowie has no less than 5 albums I would rate as 5 stars. While I wouldn't consider this one flawless, it's highly influential, and a great follow up to Spiders from Mars (a perfect record).

Solid Bowie, but not his best.

I like Bowie and I like this album. I think it lacks any truly stand out songs though but I really enjoyed listening to this album.

Classic

Cool glam rock album. Enjoyed all the songs!

Really liked this one. Kind of fun, trippy rock.

This is Bowie just being the most Bowie he can be, its super glam, a bit experimental, with poppy and some blusey flourishes. I'm a blackstar fan personally rather than his classic albums like this but that doesn't mean by any means that I'm going to give some classic bowie low marks, how could you?

Not as good as Ziggy or Diamond Dogs, which in truth, is a meaningless comparison. It's still essential Bowie.

I don't know if this list finally boomerified me but this was very pleasant to listen to

This was a pleasure to listen to. Loved the piano in all of these, but especially the final track, Lady Grinning Soul. This felt super different to Ziggy Stardust but maybe I preferred it? 4.5/5

*Aladdin Sane

Great glam rock.

i'm not deep enough in bowie to know where this ranks. enjoyed it but liked it less than ziggy stardust or low, which are my go-tos

I mean, it's Bowie. And one of his great albums. Easily a banger.

Classic Bowie. What’s not to love?

Well mastered for stereo. Good instrumentals. Not memorable personally.

I wasn't a big fan of Bowie when I was younger but I've really grown to appreciate his genius over the years. This is a classic album. Such a great, eclectic mix of musical styles. Never boring. 4 stars.

Iconic album cover, 3.8

David Bowie is so cool

The follow up to Ziggy Stardust. Evolution to a more polished, glam rock sound with a couple of show tunes in the middle. A strong album throughout and an example of the well known singles not being the strongest tracks, which is unusual for a Bowie album in my experience. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Aladdin Sane Date listened: 21/02/23

Loved this one, definitely didn't live up to Ziggy but that's besides the point. Solid 3.5 but for David I'll always round up

I’d like to start by saying untitled2 is one of the finest dancers I’ve ever seen, and when he said he doesn’t like to dance in his last review, not only was he lying, he was shaming all of mankind with his deception. The way he can make that tall, thin frame turn into something majestic is simply art in motion. He doesn’t merely dance to the music, he becomes it. Now, he may shield that part of himself from the world, weary of what society will think. But deep down, I know he loves that rush he gets when his feet start tapping to a fresh beat. His ankles start clapping and his shins start shaking. His thighs become drums and his waist becomes a spinning top. Nothing can hide that inner dancer forever untitled2, nothing. Now onto Bowie. There once was a little boy. He was very curious, always searching for answers to his questions and simply hating the expected. This hatred of the expected translated to his music listening habits, where he would shuffle his entire music library. He despised playlists. More on that later though. This boy also despised reading, he was much more of a one book per summer kind of guy. One summer, he decided to read the book on the reading list with the least amount of pages with words: Hugo Cabret. It quickly became a summer staple, due to its lengthy amount of pictures and due to the fact it was an amazing story. A redemption story wrapped in a heartfelt connection between an old man and a boy. After reading this book, the boy was clawing for more. Coincidentally, the author released another book: Wonderstruck, another absolutely amazing book. And yes, it had a ton of pictures too, so it became the second book for the summer when the teachers began requiring more than one. Also of note though, is that Wonderstruck briefly mentions “Space Oddity”, Bowie’s greatest ever track. Now, this curious little boy naturally wanted to know what this song sounded like. The description seemed interesting enough. So, he listened to it, and wow, he was charmed. The guy from Labrinyth made THIS?! He couldn’t believe it. Fast forward a few years and this kid realizes that 70’s rock and pop is the greatest sounding music known to man. The hooks are simply unmatched. He begins seeking answers to the best of the best, and one repetitive answer on every list is Starman, which quickly becomes this boy’s new favorite song. He listens to it an unhealthy amount, more than he looks at the 2016 SI Swim Edition, which is saying a lot. He wonders if maybe, is there more? If this is so good, how does the rest of the album play? And so begins his fetish for albums. Straight from Five Years, he knows he’s hit solid gold. This album will not disappoint. It becomes a favorite, especially with its iconic album cover. Fast forward a couple years and this boy is rewatching A Knight’s Tale, an absolute classic. (Sir Ulreich Van Lichenstein, the protector of Italian virginity!) He hears Golden Years, shocked that it’s in a medieval movie, but dismissing that fact due to its undeniable grooviness. He plays it day and night, shifting his hips into high gear and back into low gear like a teen driver in a manual transmission (he doesn’t have untitled2’s dance moves). After hearing this magical song, he finally assumes that Bowie is one of the greatest of all time, since all three of these pivotal tracks were on seperate albums. He searches for answers to the best albums and finds a book titled “1001 Albums to Listen to Before You Die”. He quickly adds every Bowie album in this list to his library. However, like most things in this boy’s life, he experiences burnout and quits, so the albums went without dusting for years. Or did they? Let’s remember this boy’s music listening habits. He shuffles his entire library. So, today when his roommate, Conor Clapton, began playing Aladdin Sane, this boy didn’t expect to recognize any of it. However, he knew every track to his surprise. All this time, he thought those Bowie albums were wasting away, when in reality they were playing sporadically, and they were all so good they stuck with him in his head and he bobbed along to the tunes of this legend. One last note, Bowie is in one of my all-time favorite movies and he’s amazing (no, not Labyrinth, The Prestige). The man could act, sing, and he did it his way. He was a true original, and a true inspiration to me. I’m so happy we finally got a Bowie. Also, in the film “Life Aquatic of Steve Zissou”, there are various points where a random Brazilian singer performs a Bowie song in Portuguese. His name is Seu Jorge and he actually released an entire album of him playing Bowie tracks with just a guitar and it’s honestly the best Bowie covers you’ll find. It’s a refreshing take on all of them and sounds like therapy for your ears. (Check it out). Another update, this weekend I watched “Ticket to Paradise” and after it finished, Peacock started playing “Couples Retreat” afterwards. The opening credits had a delectable song, and naturally I looked it up to listen to it more, and it was a Bowie track. It’s “Modern Love”, which got me thinking how this man made consistently good music from 1969 to 2016 uninterrupted. He changed with the times while staying himself. Seriously, go listen to his 90’s music right now. You’re going to be all like “damn, Bowie made good 90’s music? What the eff?!” There aren’t many 70’s artists who can say they kept their dignity intact through the 80’s, but he pulled it off!

listened to again no such thing as a bad Bowie album

I do, like Bowie so much more that I have hit critical mass on record listening.

It Ziggy Stardust is a 5-star classic masterpiece this is a solid 4-star amazing album. Aladdin Sane is probably closer to a 4.5 star rating, with his wide variety of sounds and textures in all the songs.

Выделяю Aladdin Sane, Cracked Actor, Time (хорошо напомнило прошлый альбом), The Jean Genie.

liked a lot of the songs in here, good intro to bowie for me

whimsical creature but blackstar is his best

Honestly, pretty good. I had listened to Lady grinning soul before, but the other songs are also very good. Not my music taste but I can still recognize the talent and work that was put into this album and THAT PIANO!! Pretty good overall.

Remember listening a long time ago, which is a crime, this needs to go on my random list. Some great songs. Just before my era.

After listening to some Bowie albums following this list and also by myself, I consider myself much more aware of his many musical styles and phases. This one is not the best for me, but it is still Bowie, a 5-star artist even on his worst days, so it deserves a high rate, for sure.

Disjointed and jaded, though that's probably the whole point. Some well worked songs, some experimentation, some earnest lyrics that translate to being tired of being on the road. A couple of classic songs. Overall not the best Bowie but still pretty good.

Better than I remember. A great record

A little different than what I'm used to from Bowie. Nice sound. A little raw. I did enjoy that

3.5+/5

Bowie goes hard and this album is no exception good time

Nice! My husband and I listened to this one together while chilling in the office, and it was just the right amount of dramatic flair, lyricism, and energy. Some of the tracks were not as enjoyable, but overall I'd give this a listen again.

Another gem from Bowie. Great, exciting songs.

Probably no my favourite Bowie but still pretty good

Oops glömde recensera D Vowie zowie bowie e getad

This goes hard A Trip To The Moon (1902)

Aladdin Brazy

Straight up David Bowie

Good album, keeps rockin' along Probably not my Favourite Bowie but good enough to listen to again

It's a bit of a classic.

- Heard this before - Not one of my favourite Bowie albums, so it's still better than 90% of any other albums ever - Fav songs: Time, Drive-In Saturday, Aladdin Sane

I really do love David Bowie so this is just a nice treat before I get back into the shitstorm of the albums ahead I’m sure.

Bowies best. Dad played it on his LP

Already listened

Bowie is a mad genius. The more I listen to his music the more I appreciate it. Liked the tracks 'Watch That Man', 'Drive-In Saturday' and 'The Jean Genie'. 3,5/5

4.5 stars

A classic.

Very good

Solid album

Rating: 7.1 Best Track(s): Time, Aladdin Sane

The Jean Genie' i 'Drive-in Saturday'.

Wow. I am realizing that my appreciation for Bowie does not nearly go deep enough. This is amazing. LOVE "Cracked Actor." Thank you.

It's David Bowie

Masterful songwriter.

One of my favorite Bowie albums. On this one he stretches out and the arrangements get a decidedly jazzy feel on a few songs; especially the title track which features some excellent piano work from Mike Garson. There are still some quality rockers here like Watch That Man and Gene Jeanie as well as the great mid-tempo rocker, one of my favorite Bowie songs of all-time; Panic in Detroit. Other hilights; Cracked Actor as well as an excellent take on The Stones Let's Spend the Night Together. 4 stars

Solid album. Unbelievable musician.

A wonderful discovery for me. Great arrangements, a lot of energy. Well worth another listen

Great album.

Great production but wasn’t the biggest fan Fav. Songs: Drive-In Saturday, Prettiest Star

Was a solid album, no bad songs on it i can see why bowie was such an influencial figure, however there was no songs on it that blew me a way was good but not spectacular. 7/10

Sounds a bit experimental with the piano at times. I liked the extra touches he put on the Stones cover Spend the Night Together. I liked this one better, it seemed more balanced.

This was a really fun album. I don't normally find Bowies voice that enjoyable, but certainly have huge respect for his musical talent and creativity. This album however - his voice works really well. It's a straight up bluesy rock album.

Not my favorite Bowie album, but still a really good album.

Classic album, the crazy jazz piano riffs really give it a unique sound

Jean Genie, Cracked Actor, and an interesting cover of 'Let's Spend the Night Together' were the highlights.

Pretty cool album. Haven't listened to much Bowie before but I enjoyed this.

Aladdin Sane surprised me actually with a few songs I can't get out of my head. Knew Jean Jenie before this and was never a big fan of that song and most Bowie songs in that style (i.e. Rebel Rebel) and that put me off listening to the rest of this album. Drive in Saturday is probably my favourite of the bunch and will be in my head for a while. Panic in Detroit, Time, the title track and Lady Grinning Soul are great songs as well. The rest of the album is alright though Bowie's cover of Lets Spend The Night Together is an interesting listen (undecided whether its good or laughably bad).

Bowie. Ningún megahit. Un 4.

More mature, musical depth and sophistication than Ziggy. Very good album

A whimsical, energetic album with some slight Arabic (Asian?) Theming, very much to David Bowie's style. Fun, but a little annoying at times

Diversity, complex Good fun

pretty good but it’s bowie so i expected it

Glam rock

Aucun album de Bowie décevant à date. Définitivement à revisiter

Album gets better as it goes on.

I didn't find it QUITE as memorable as the other Bowie albums I've heard. But perhaps it's not fair to compare to compare this to his other works. I've just heard too much Bowie that I like more than this, maybe if I had heard this album before his others it would've had a bigger impression on me. I'll spend some more time with this one in the future Whoever played piano on this album killed it, btw I liked Time and really liked the last track

Banger after Banger, but I want really in the mood this evening. Undeniable quality, mind.

Bowie and the Spiders From Mars had a run of great records in the early 70's, Hunky Dory, Ziggy, Aladdin Sane (along with the covers album, Pinups). Aladdin was the last of original material and it sometimes doesn't get the attention and accolades of the previous two albums. It's because Aladdin Sane isn't as essential and important, but it's still an outstanding record with fine contributions from the Spiders. This was the first Bowie record I owned on vinyl, so I have a soft spot for it and I still consider it one of his better albums from the 70's.

I don't really enjoy David Bowie's music that much, but it is interesting to trace his influence on other musicians' styles.

Amazing album

This album definitely falls close to the David Bowie sweet spot for me. Low is my favorite album, though I also have to admit my undying love for Hunky Dory. This album seems to be in the middle of those two. It's far less poppy than Hunky Dory, but far less dark than Low. Despite being something of an in between album, it's really enjoyable. 4/5

Bowie ups the glam, also keeps some classic rock and roll in here. Massive shout outs to the backing vocalists and pianist, who put in some dazzling work on this record. Favorite tracks: "The Jean Genie", "Let's Spend the Night Together"

It was a fun album. A couple of the songs were well known. I would listen to this album again. There were a couple of piano parts that got a little annoying but it was only slightly.

Not my fave Bowie album but it’s stil an exceptional piece of work

Hey it’s the guy from The Prestige

3 more Bowie albums to go as I count down from 169. All 4s and 5s so far and this is another 4 for me. Enjoyable but nothing really quite grabbed me. Faves: Aladdin Sane, The Jean Genie

capa lendária mas nao é o apice

Solid. Bowie never disappoints.

This is like 3.5*. It's great music but nothing really excited me that much.

That Man, Aladdin Sane (1913-1938-197?), Drive-In Saturday, Panic in Detroit, Cracked Actor, Time, The Prettiest Star, The Jean Genie, Lady Grinning Soul Moins pref: Let's Spend the Night Together.

One of his best, that's for sure. Mark Garson's playing steals the show on this one, especially on the title track. Honestly, this would be very close to a perfect album if it wasn't for that uneventful Rolling Stones cover.

I expected more from this one. I liked it a lot, but it's not part of my top 5 from Bowie.

Classic !

Not necessarily in my David Bowie top 5, but definitely an iconic album. The juxtaposition between Mike Garson's incredible piano performance and catchy glam rock is quite unique. Always nice to come back to this record.

Good. It stuck with me after repeated plays.

Bowie never disappoints

Not listened before, excellent stuff - some real classics

I suppose that if you were of the opinion that there are too many Bowie albums on the list, you'd choose this one as one of the ones to go. It's still Bowie and still great, though. Best track: The Jean Genie

A couple of good tracks and a few “fillers” Still an enjoyable album.

Enjoyed this album, but not as much as I enjoyed the previous Bowie album from about 2 weeks ago. Fave track was Jean Genie. Cool artwork :)

Pretty good. I noticed something about the mixing of this that i really don’t like, it just sounds thin and reedy. 8/10

8/10. Pretty good, but he can do better.

Solid album, some songs stood out as bangers among a lot of alright songs. 8/10

Enn önnur frábæra platan. Fylgdi mér sérstaklega á seinni hluta unglingsáranna.

It's not my favorite bowie. But man is it good as always. Love the album work on this one too. Just about as Iconic as it gets honestly.

Everyone loves David Bowie and this album shows why. I had only ever listened to Ziggy Stardust but this album is really good as expected

Not one of my favorites of his, but still very solid

I feel as if I’ve neglected the greatness of Bowie for a while. First time listening to this album and it’s very entertaining. Bowie has a talent for great lyrics and unique yet amazing instrumentals. This is a good album and would listen again. 7.7/10

Yay, finally :)

A solid effort by Bowie. Not his best work but still really good. Ziggy era Bowie was surely some of his best material if not THE best.

Some good sounds I saved one then got halfway and decided to change that went a bit too nuts but overall good. 4.1/5

short sweet lush

Much better than Heroes from a few days ago. Not quite a 5 but a very solid 4

Far better than Heroes, really enjoyed this. Faith in Bowie, Restored.

This album is a proper jam, I bopped around a fair bit, and will be rounding this up to a 4, but not sure if it deserves this as I wouldn't add this to my regular rotation. (Is Bowie overrated? He might be.)

I really liked this one

Another great Bowie album. It's not one of my favourites but it's still really good and it desreves to be recognized among his greater works. Also the cover is iconic.

Bowie being Bowie It's not a 5 but it's good!

A gorgeously diverse and imaginative blend of rock, soul, and cabaret, engaging and enrobing. 1973 going on 1982.

honkey tonk rodeo, hoe down type music, prefer his more electronic stylings

Not so sure about the title track...

pretty good

Good enough to listen to more than once. Although only one song stuck out to me, which is Cracked Actor, due to its heavier sound. Lyrics were almost good, but nothing memorable.

Finally, just over 100 albums in and the Starman himself graces me with his presence on this journey! It’s not my favourite iteration of Bowie, but it is a damn good one nonetheless.

Not bad, was a bit hard to follow at times. David is beyond his time

I mean, it's Bowie. It's great. Is it his best? I don't think so. But it's Bowie. So it's great.

R.I.P. legendo <3

Great album, almost as good as Ziggy

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Cracked actor

Pretty good! No real low points

I liked this album start to finish. Lot of songs I had not heard before. Height of Bowie and you can tell.

Excellent...

Nice, al vond ik de vorige beter

goeike bowie

Going into this, I thought Aladdin Sane was my favourite Bowie album, but upon listening to it again I realised that must have been mainly because of Time. Overall, I thought the album sounded rather harsh and had a bit too much dissonance for my taste. However, Time and Lady Grinning Soul are still two amazing songs that compelled me to lift my rating from 3 to 4 stars. Maybe I'll enjoy this album more on another day.

David Bowie! Fun and funky. I actually favorited some songs for this album

Onirico, pungente e coinvolgente. Non il miglior Bowie però.

Review: An interesting album -- It's like a weird mix of Jazz, Classical, and Rock. Pretty good! Last track is very FOTS-like. Favorite Track: Time In one word: Wonkiness

Bluesy and Jazzy Piano, and Guitar Riffs are contained throughout the album. Bowie's bluesiest and jazziest album as far as I have heard, but ironically it does seem like he's trying to do too much at times. But it's Bowie - so the creative effort outmatches the overstimulation to make the album worth revisiting. Favorite song: Aladdin Sane

Aladdin as twin to Ziggy: It's so clear now but I missed it until today. I hear something like Blackstar, too, but that might come down to familiarity. The alien is a bit sadder here, and the songs are more for him. A piano can't deliver as much despair as woodwinds can, but the texture is still new and affecting. The style spirals out a bit at the end, into what might be the mad space of hedonism.

David Bowie is best in seemingly smaller doses. Love the eccentricity, his showmanship is among the best to ever do it. Not very often does this listener feel that his music matches his ability for the dramatic and extra flair because it builds an expectation that the music would be as non-stop spectacular. Granted, very few, if any album would accomplish such high expectation, but David Bowie sells it better than anybody. The pro and con being that every song that resounds with the masses, the songs that do not exact a seemingly harder bout of disappointment. No love lost for David Bowie, "Aladdin Sane" is a fine album demonstrating a masterful discipline to staying committed to his act, if anything his consistency is the saving grace even if there is a saxophone on "Drive-in Saturday".

Listened twice. Jazz piano on Aladdin Sane wasn’t for me but I love Lady Grinning Soul. Not my favourite Bowie album but still good

It was good bowie

Not as good as Hunky Dory, but still amazing. Some great keys throughout. Fav new track: Lady Grinning Soul

Kind of liked it. I feel I have to listen to it more to understand it.

-Solid album all the way through -One of the better Bowie albums -Catchy, upbeat songs -Really enjoyed this album and would add songs to my current playlist -Cool album art -Didn't dislike any songs but my most favourite were Watch That Man, Drive-In Saturday, Cracked Actor, The Prettiest Star, Lady Grinning Soul -For now I will give it 4 stars but it definitely has potential for 5 the more I listen to it

Very well balanced album, brilliant from start to finish, love the jazz influences

First Bowie album (from this list anyway). By my count, Bowie has more albums on this list than anyone else (8 - seems high). My knowledge of this album basically boiled down to the iconic album cover, "The Jean Genie", and the cover of the Stones' "Let's Spend The Night Together". And frankly I wasn't 100% sure this was the album Jean Genie appeared on (part of me associates with the video for "Blue Jean", which is something the internet needs to make happen). Turns out that Rolling Stones' cover is the only song on this album I don't especially like. Eight is Enough/Too Many for The Thin White Duke on this list. The proper number is a debate for another day, but Aladdin Sane absolutely deserves a place here.

Good album with sine great tunes

This didn't grab me quite as hard as Ziggy Stardust, but it's cool hearing the more experimental stuff start to creep in to his sound. "Time" made me think of It's Always Sunny's "Night Man" - I wonder if that's its source!? Fave tracks - "Panic in Detroit" maybe, or "Cracked Actor"... I feel like if I listened to this album a bunch more times that rating might climb to 5...

Not what I expected. Some disorienting lumpy jazz moments which added to the albums journey. A better understanding of the narrative would like result in a second listen being worth it.

4.5, rounded down unfortunately. It's a wonderful album, but when I compare it to other Bowie albums there are other ones I like more. So I have to save the 5 for those...

One of Bowie’s classics, perfect apart form a couple songs

Another Bowie classic! Good mix of songs/genres.

Bowie pulls off this trick he's done with me before where at the start I'm thinking this guy is just a rock and roller with a great makeup artist and photographer, but by the end he's sold me on the Bowie magic once again.

New to me. I'm more familiar with Bowie's Berlin trilogy than his earlier Stardust era stuff. Pretty good, I like the sort of raunchy Stones vibe but TBH I'd probably rather just listen to the Stones for that. Enjoyable album though.

Mejor de lo que esperaba, muy escuchable. Tema preferido: Drive-In Saturday

This album is a staple to any David Bowie fan. When the single is featured on most greatest hits and it’s the weakest song in the album, that says something. The piano work on Aladdin Sane is stellar.

Been dodging the Bowie discography forever so I was looking forward to this album. The first track didn't grab me and "Alladin Sane" might work better as a closing track given the eerie outro jam--good tune nonetheless. "Panic in Detroit" is new to me and I dig that blend of proto-punk and talking-heads-like world percussion. Didn't think Bowie would write a gritty song like Cracked Actor--hanging out with Iggy paid off. A Stones cover seems like a strange choice here. "Jean Genie" is a bop though. Overall, prettay, prettay good. Wish the gritty theme was consistent throughout the album, but perhaps thats alot to ask of a star on Bowie's level. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Another brilliant album…

Really good album - lots of interesting ideas and developments from TRAF

Jean genieee

Only Bowie can make this old school genre of rock feel more awesome as can be. But I think I won’t listen to it again .

My first full Bowie album and I’ve got to say I’m a fan now! The piano and Bowie’s vocals really set this one apart for me. “Lady Grinning Soul” is hauntingly beautiful and the title track’s piano riffage is insane.

Early 70s pop thing. Quite enjoyable, strong vibes.

NICEEEEE 8..5/10

7.5/10

I enjoyed the eclectic sounds present in this album. No two songs sounded the same. I’ve never been big on the glam but have been more appreciative of Bowie’s production genius as of late.

great fucking vibes ngl te pone de buen humor high energy good for high energy focus or even exercise

Fantastic, truly.

Some great guitar riffs. Not my most familiar Bowie project but enjoyable nonetheless

A melhor música do álbum é o auto intitulado Aladdin Sane. Nota:8/10 Dia: 19/05/2026

I like David Bowie, not sure why they would choose this album though.

Ones I knew were good, eg Saturday night drive Early ones a bit too active and manic for background during work

.oigoigiogoig

It's Bowie. Haven't listened to this one before, only heard a bit of bowie, but its a nice album

Ziggy Glam fall out. Best Tracks: Watch That Man, Drive-In Saturday, Jean Genie

Production: 13/20 Songwriting: 16/20 Innovation: 14/20 Bangers: 20/20 Emotional response: 16/20 =79 Oooooh one mark off a 5!

I like Bowie sometimes, but this album wasn't really my taste...

Excellent. ****

Classic

I think it’s pronounced Bowie Never listened to this album before, I think I’ll give his other stuff a chance after this.

Not as good as Ziggy Stardust or Hunky Dory. But still had several good tracks on it.

For me this is Bowie in his core competency. I love Ziggy, and Bowie even says this is Ziggy goes to America. I love the glitz and glamourous treatment of the gritty subject matter. A lot of very pretty music about drugs, sex and violence. You could really hear the American influence on this album. Lots of blues guitar riffs, old doo-wop melodies, and even some plunky vaudevillian piano as well. "Drive in Saturday," "Panic in Detroit," and "Jean Jeanie" were my faves. Then I heard "Lady Grinning Soul," and DAMN! Flamenco guitar all up in there, with those fluttering keys mmmmmhmm that was a special way to close it out. I really loved this album but I've got to go with a 4 because this really was Ziggy 2 but just not quite as good.

I'm guessing there are like 6 Bowie albums on this list. Which makes sense. Include Let's Dance you cowards!

Bowie that I’ve never really listened to. I liked it.

How can one not like Bowie?

I don't particularly enjoy David Bowie but he was a huge impact in rock music

Typical Bowie style album with lyrics to match. A nice driving album.

Cool album! I personally think it says more about the rock sound at that time, than it does of Bowie, but it is still characteristic of the Bowie persona.

beautiful

Not usually a huge Bowie fan, but this was a pretty fun listen Favorite Tracks: “Watch That Man,” “Panic In Detroit,” and “The Jean Genie”

Really solid album, first time I’ve really listened to any Bowie, especially from before the 80s era. I’m excited to see where that goes

Very rocky and out there, Bowie is always good

Holy Crap David Bowie. You managed to make this, Transformer and Hunky Dory in the span of 3 years? This is wonderful, the Birth of Ziggy Stardust, the honky tonk. This is tock and roll, where hunky dory could get weird and wild this is grooving. Like a Jean Genie, I want to spend my time with aladdin sane

good as you'd expect

It's epic Bowie. Glam and decadence. It's amazing how layered the rock sound is. Other than the strange Let's Spend the Night cover, it is solid and has several absolute classics.

Gotta love some Bowie

I was hearing a lot of texture in the songs, lots of layers to listen to. I like the heavy rock n roll, and simultaneous sophistication he brings to it. I haven't listened to many Bowie records front to back, really enjoying it.

David Bowie strikes again! Going back to the early 70's era of Bowie is always a treat. This album seems to be his first venture into the more bluesy American style that was prevalent in his next few albums. But what makes this album triumph againts the likes of Young Americans and Pin-ups is the perfect balance it strikes between experimental and accessible, earning it a place in the big three albums of Bowie's Ziggy Stardust days. Unfortunately, this album is the Larry Hemsworth of the Ziggy albums. Sure it's good, but Diamond Dogs and Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust are the more attractive brothers. There are definitely less iconic Bowie songs from this album, but the songs here are all really solid and work together to create a great album. Bowie's vocal performance on this album is top-notch, probably one of his best. It was much less put-on and showey, more natural but still retaining that iconic glamorous feeling. My verdict of this album is that it's totally worth listening to if you're a Bowie fan, but if you want to get into Bowie then go for Diamond Dogs, which perfects the same musical ideas presented in this album, with catchier and more thematically interesting songs. Favorite track: Time Least Favorite: The Jean Genie

"Time"

Production: 13/20 Songwriting: 16/20 Innovation: 14/20 Bangers: 20/20 Emotional response: 16/20 =79 Oooooh one mark off a 5!

Yeah yeah yeah yeah fine

Enjoyed it.

Hadn't listened to this one in awhile and I really enjoyed listening to it again. Some great tracks but as an album I don't think it holds up as well as others in his catalog. My favorite track is probably "Time."

I liked more here than I thought. There's so much David Bowie blindspots I have, and while everything on this album isn't absolutely amazing, there is a lot of production and intent going on, nothing seems half-assed. I enjoyed the janky-ness of some of the playing, 3.5 up to 4.

Super engaging, diverse, and well-produced. More enjoyable than other Bowie I've listened to. Slaps.

Holy T. Rex vibes Didn't get as into it as some other David Bowie albums, possibly because I knew them better

At times raw and almost primal. Intense tempos and interesting lyrics.

I think I liked Hunky Dory more overall, but this was still a good album. The first two tracks were great. It felt more polished than HD. I don’t have a whole lot to say about it specifically but I may revisit when I’m more familiar with Bowie’s early catalog. I feel like these discographies (for a lot of artists, not just Bowie) are so massive I want to compare the albums with each other in the context of the full career. Al this to say, fine album, better than a lot of the ones we’ve listened to, worse than others.

Good album but just shy of a masterpiece/5 stars

Cool as hell. Need to listen again, a little better.

, 8/10

solid bowie - got some funky, weird stuff going on, while still being accessible, but doesn't reach his typical highs

didn't get a chance to listen closely, so need to go back to this one

I enjoyed it more than I expected. Probably closer to a 3.5/ 3.7ish.

Decent David Bowie album. 8/10

There are some excellent moments on this album, but as a whole, I lose interest in the second half and find the lyrics not especially engaging. Good - but possibly a little overrated.

Ganske bra, men ikke helt min type musikk. Relativt rolig rock 7/10.

I initially went into listening to this record thinking I would really like it, being a fan of The Jean Genie. To my dismay I was kinda let down by the record as a whole. The song is textbook early glamrock; psychedelic pop at its finest. But it where it sells short is some of the compositional/creative decisions where for, lack of a better word, lackluster. 3 solid stars.

Maybe I just expect more of Bowie after the last number of albums we’ve listened to, but this was honestly pretty mid for his standards
