Not bad! 3/5

Very bowie, not quite my type of music

I listened to "Low" by Bowie first, and obviously that one and this one are pretty different. This is considered peak Bowie, after all. I can't really pinpoint a specific genre, but I hear maybe some blues and elements I've heard used in '80s pop. But above all, the music is unique and different, and many times sonically interesting, which seems to encapsulate Bowie's style. I particularly enjoyed "Panic in Detroit" and "Cracked Actor".

Sorry David Bowie but I've always found the Aladdin Sane name to be a bit lame.. But how is the music? Typical Bowie - piano driven rock with mystical/psychedelic elements. Actually, as we move on we have more guitar-driven rocky tracks. Quite like early glam. So we have a mix of track types. I like the music in the title track but the name is grating on me.. Panic in Detroit has the kind of rhythms Rolling Stones used, but less bluesy guitars. Jean Genie is also Stones-like Best track (except Jean Genie) - Aladdin Sane (nothing else stood out) 3 stars - Bowie goes Stones - didnt grab me much.

Iconic album cover, less iconic songs

With exception to that insanely abstract piano solo this was a much more straight forward rock album than I was expecting.

The only thing that really grabbed me about this album was the iconic cover. The rest is fine, but I didn’t like it as much as I hoped. 3/5

inégal. des pistes très bien, d'autres un peu faciles

This is the seventh of Bowie‘s nine albums on this countdown that I’ve had, and while I generally have liked everything prior to this, even more so than I ever expected, this one just didn’t hit for me. Not that any of the songs are bad it’s just none of them are great either. A lot of tracks on here that are pretty average, decent to listen to, but not blowing me away. To me it sounds like he’s trying to actually follow up on Ziggy Stardust and it just didn’t come close to reaching those levels. Three stars

This was an odd album for me. Half the songs were pretty good while the other half felt kinda weak for Bowie. Panic in Detroit, Time, Let's Spend The Night Together were the highlights on this one.

Album is fun, lots of variety. No ziggy Stardust but pretty g

Good music but I couldn’t connect with it emotionally

Jevnt over bra greier, men har ingen skikkelige høyda. 3.5

Just doesn’t really scratch my brain like it apparently should?

Didn't particularly land with me this one, better than young Americans but probably not any of the others, so I'd say a 3. Don't recognise any songs other than jean genie and while it had a interesting sound and style as you might expect from DB, it was missing other standout tracks.

good but not great

Oh man I wanna rat this higher because Lady Grinning Soul is one of the most perfect songs ever but the rest of the album isn't quite on the same level.

Un poco ruidoso pero tiene unas excelentes

Parts of this album actually remind me of The Wall by Pink Floyd.

I don’t know if this is actually that extraordinary. What Bowie always has going for him is lyrics and a distinctive voice, which are present here, but the songwriting doesn’t really do it for me. The first track definitely sounds like The Rolling Stones, which must be where all the comparison come from, but I don’t think the rest of it does at all. I think that the last track, Lady Grinning Soul, might’ve been my favorite because it’s the weirdest. The rest of this is almost formulaic. Maybe it’s because he came up with formula but I don’t think that’s it. I didn’t get a lot out of this. It’s still Bowie so it’s good but I expected a lot more.

The Aladdin Sane track got really annoying. The rest is pretty much Bowie. Not that I like it very much, but it is not bad either

Listen on: Spotify (2013 remaster) Listening experience: Interrupted. Driving and house jobs I wanted to like this but I couldn’t get into it. The title track with the chaotic piano was very ill timed with some stressful navigating in the car. I’ll have to give this one another shot (this is the first Bowie album of the project and I know there are many more to come). This was probably not the logical entry point!

This was fine, but not my favourite of the Bowie albums we’ve heard so far. I was only familiar with “The Jean Genie”, and it was definitely the standout. The rest were okay - nothing special, but nothing terrible either.

Rating:★★★ I liked Time and Aladdin Sane, and the rest had its moments. I don't dislike the album but it isn't great for me either.

Aladdin sane sounds amazing Moody glammy and totally atmospheric, but the lyrics don't always click with the music. Great vibe, uneven songs. I'd give it a 3/5

I like Bowie, but to paraphrase the great Alan Partridge, when asked what my favourite Bowie album is my response would be "I'd have to say, The Best of David Bowie". Maybe that will change as I get through more of his stuff but for now it holds. I guess to be more specific for this album, I'll say that the Prettiest Star is both undeniably Bowie, and also undeniably bland - and the same can be said for many of the songs on here.

Ne volim Bowiea. Očito me nijedan album neće ubijediti. A albuma ima previše. Bez ikakve potrebe.

never understood the Bowie hype, still don't. the instrumentals were great but I think anyone else could've done the singing and it might have been a better album

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would- I dont consider myself to be a huge David Bowie fan. But there were a lot of good b-sides that varied a lot in sound (but sometimes drifting into bizarre). Overall- good album

É um album sem dúvida nenhuma, é um albúm único, inovador para época lançado e para hoje também. Nunca ouvi nada parecido.

I had never heard any of these Bowie songs!

Zit heel mooi in elkaar. Voelt zeker niet als vroege jaren 70. Echt tijdloos. Beetje de rock van de tijd met een geplastificeerd, en dus tijdloos, bowie-laagje eroverheen. Wel ook zeker met wat piano quirks er tussendoor Wat lichte bangers maar niks spreekt me direct enorm aan.

Like most of Bowie's music for me. It was alrightish.

It was fine, but none of the Bowie that I enjoy.

Feeling a strong ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 on this one, maybe a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ if I revisit it. I listened through a couple times. The title track is a bit too drugged out and weird for me, but the back half of the album is full of some good songs. I don’t know if I knew really any of these and I’ve listened to a decent amount of Bowie.

I really enjoyed this. There were some great songs and I liked the overall vibe of the album - bit mental. Think Bowie did a good job here but I can’t give it a 4, unfortunately.

Mixed thoughts with this one. I think half the album i liked, and the other half was not too good. Songs lime Alladin Sane and the honky tonky strange circus songs i reslly didnt like. But songs like Cracked Actor i did really like. I think its just my taste in music. I cant gove this anything more than a 3. Wouldn't listen again.

i see we are an insane lad.. she's experimental... i see... almost lost me but i think we're coming back it's a three point five in my heart. it's definitely good and i wouldn't complain if it was background music, I didn't get bored but i also wasn't particularly compelled by anything.

Iconic cover, but was never one of my favorite Bowie records. This decade may as well have been an eternity for Bowie with how many eras and sound shifts he went through, and this might be his most recognizable persona of those many lifetimes. Glam rock was never my style, though, so these early ‘70s Bowie records (minus Ziggy) have always been tough for me to get into - the Berlin era might be my favorite Bowie. Happy to have given this another spin though - I enjoyed it more this time!

Eines der schlechteren bowie alben

A record that I've always felt had some big issues- the glam stuff feels a bit like old hat after it reached its pinnacle on Ziggy. He begins to touch on an experimental sound here, but it's not explored enough to make the entire experience feel cohesive. The production is fantastic, and the musicianship top-notch (I see you Mick Ronson). This re-listen only solidified, however, just how inconsistent the songs are. For every smile and thumbs up I give songs like "Panic in Detroit" and "Lady Grinning Soul," I raise an eyebrow at the messiness of "Cracked Actor" and "Let's Spend the Night Together." A good album, but not a great one.

i hadn't listened to this album before so mostly i just know it as "the one with the cover everyone knows". yknow, the "🧑‍🎤" one. it took me an embarrassingly long time to realise the pun in the album name. its pretty good. not the best bowie i've heard but i always enjoy his voice so i cant imagine not finding at least something to like on one of his albums....? and sure enough there's a couple bangers here. "cracked actor" is the obvious standout to me with the guitars driving and wailing, sounding as ready to fuck as the character it portrays, but i also really enjoy mike garson's wild piano solos in the title track and the chaotic cover of "let's spend the night together" is great too. the internal conflict he was feeling over his sudden rise to stardom really comes through in this album i think. what really caught me off guard about this album is "the jean genie". first off i didn't even realise it was a bowie song, but also it's like, kind of the weakest track on the album imo? i really don't get why this is the one that popped off hardest as a single, or really even why it was chosen to be released as a single over the other, stronger candidates here, but maybe it's just another case of overexposure on my part. who can say. i'm kinda torn between a 3 or 4 on this one, but i think realistically if i'm going back to this one i'm largely just going back for "cracked actor", so i'm gonna lean towards a 3. it's a strong 3 tho. a fun album, but again, not bowie's best.

David Bowie and Neil Young must have collaborated to put together this list cuz there's no reason for either one l, as much as I like them both, to have this many albums on this list and leave out so many other greats. Still this is a pretty decent album but nothing that interesting. His other albums are much better

Not my sound atm, but most def worth a revisit in the near future.

good bowie album. a bit overrated imo though 6/10. First listen tracklist ranking: 1. Lady Grinning Soul 2. Panic in Detroit 3. Time 4. Aladdin Sane 5. The Jean Genie 6. The Prettiest Star 7. Drive-In Saturday 8. Watch That Man 9. Cracked Actor 10. Let's Spend the Night Together

3.5 Other David Bowie albums: The Man Who Sold The World (1970) 4/5 Lodger (1979) 4/5

A few great tracks

David Bowie, good, but not as his best.

Everything sounds the same

Not bad

Not the best openers. Watch That Man - piano and some Status Quo type riffing. Aladdin Sane - more piano to the fore (or forte!). Niceish until the cat runs over the keys half way through. Drive-In Saturday with a doo wop style is better - better vocals from DB. Not a big fan of Panic in Detroit - Stonesy feel to the guitars. Also not anything special about the later Stones cover. Cracked Actor is a good glammed up song to begin with but…. Then Time is more than a bit too theatrical. Then the next one is doo wop and theatrical. Quite a negative review so far. Maybe I’m missing something and should listen to the lyrics a bit more. 4 for Jean Genie. The rest is between a 2 and 3. Generous 3.

Not his best

I think there’s a couple of Bowie albums on this list which are questionable additions, Aladdin Sane is one of them. It is by no means a bad album. It’s just not up to the high standards of many of his other albums included on this list. Solid three and a bit.

Not my favorite Bowie but still incredibly solid. A few of the slower songs don’t really work for me so I’ve only got this at a three but that may be grading unfairly on a curve because of his other superb output.

Ikke hans beste verk.

I appreciate the experimentation in Aladdin Sane (the song), but if anything brings me back to this album, it will be the last four tracks.

It was okay.

Oh good it's David Bowie. Oh no it's Aladdin Sane. Could've been better, but could've been worse.

its good but it also feels weirdly... ?empty, like i cant't quite put my finger on it but something is not quite right

This is now the 4th Bowie album I've been given. I think Bowie himself was a pretty awesome guy, but I just don't get the fuss, musically. That being said, this was my favorite one of his albums that has shown up so far. But it's unfortunately been a pretty low bar.

Just not my cup of tea. Don’t get me wrong insane instrumentals and vocals and overall very upbeat but just not my type of music. To me it wasn’t anything i would listen to ever again 4/10

Kinda jazzy in parts not overly impressed for David Bowie expectations. Hard to call a bowie album bad just not the bowie album for me. But vocals and guitar hit really nice on panic in Detroit and cracked actor. Keyboard and saxophone felt sexy on prettiest star! Highlights:Panic in detroit, cracked actor, prettiest star, Lowlights: Aladdin sane

50/50 on songs I liked and didn’t like. There was a giant poster of this album in my music class which I’d always stare at when zoning out. I kept fixating on that weird bit on his collarbone.

This was ok. 3 albums into Bowie and I’m not really into it yet, but we’ll see what comes next.

Love the wacky notes, especially in "Time". Cracked actor had nice singing thingies, like the voice getting louder and subsiding away. I noticed a continuous beat of the guitar through most of the songs, and the deep notes (bass i think) was nice. The piano beginnings in some songs was nice as well!! The album so far (currently on 2nd to last song) gets better and better. HOLY SHIT, "Lady Grinning Soul" stars off so beautifully??!! The soft slow singing and the piano excitedly tapping?!?? Probably my favorite so far...wait lemme listen more. "Lady Grinning Soul" definitely my favorite. I think I'll relisten to this. Nice start to last song!! Okay relistening... "Watch That Man" changed a little after relistening. I think it was mostly the instrumental that deterred me a little, but after listening again, it grew on me a little. I liked it!! "Aladdin Sane" I love the piano start and the soft singing with the jazzy notes!! "Uh uh uh uh you'll make it", i like. The contrast with the soft slower notes, then the pace picking up, is nice! I don't know how else to explain. Then there's the juanty key notes 😍!! "Drive In Saturday" had a different start but peaceful. I like the "aaaahhhhhhh" background voices and the saxophone. Oohh the build up in "It's a- it's- it's-" LOVE. "Panic In Detroit" the tone feels upbeat with the guitar and drums, wasn't my taste before but i kinda like it! dun dun dundahhhh, like it! Also the background singers are fun :o The little higher pitched guitar notes are my favorite part of the song. The layered voices and guitar riffing was also another really good bit. "Cracked Actor" I like the lyrics "Crack baby Crack, check your ear Crack baby Crack smack baby smack" I like it lot! Also the Guitar building with the voice and adding emphasis is really nice rhythm. I love the singing in the "Oh yeayhhh" and in general for this song. Felt very licking microphone? But not in a weird way ✋😼. Probably my 2nd fav in this album. "Time" WAHEHH love the beginning, the lyrics are nice too!! I notice i could hear them better in this song so called me bias...(although i did like the lyrics in Panic in Detroit too). The vocals = ✋👁️🤚 yes. "Should be home by now" felt, interesting? Like it reminded me of something but dont know what. The pause and then starting again twice, then the guitar shift!!! Love. Love. "Take your time" 💗💗💗. "I had so many dreams" "love has left you dreamless" I like this song 💗. I think this one's my 2nd fav, then the previous song is my 3rd fav. The senseless singing / humming reminds me of the feeling I get when I'm losing my mind a little / delusionally wasting time?? Like a daydream!! But a real life? "The Prettiest Star" nice start but I don't really like it? I like it but the beat and the singers at the beginng, not my taste I think. Felt like a old marionent musical?? (Thinking of cabaret but i love cabaret so not the same) Probably my least favorite song. However, the singing reminds me of Pink Love by Blonde Redhead...I dont know why?? I dont hate this song y'know, the more I listen it's nicer! I've also noticed a pattern in all the songs where there's an instrumental break about a minute and a half where there's the instrument's time to shine. I like it a lot in this song particularly, maybe this songs a better than I thought!! Liked it the 2nd time listening. "Let's Spend The Night Together" Gave heavy 60s-80s feelings, especially with the beginning! I felt hints of sci-fi a little. I like the faster paced beat and singing. I liked the cadence of the singing, it does feel glam! :3 Then the ending? 🙏>[]< YEAHHHHHHHH "The Jean Genie" I like the beat, i like the hanging of the voice "hannnng" this is nice! But this song probably is one of my least favorites because it felt a little more country than I'd like 🤔. just the feeling i got. but i like the guitar most of all in this one!!! "Lady Grinning Soul" MY FAVORITE so far, but let's see if there's more notes. I love the being obviously, the guitar and piano duet ☝️🥹 yes please. this one reminds me of an etheral being floating away, don't ask. The singing too? So soft and distant! I love 💗. The danicng piano and swaying guitar as me nyself and I would say, the singing feels so familiar too. "And when the ? are too" ✋🥹, "She'll be your living end" 💗 Also just found out there's lyrics?!!? WHAT, i could've been...bro. 👁️👁️ "All The Young Dudes" i like the little blablbalbkah of the guitar in beginning, and the starting lyrics hit. 25. "Television man is crazy saying what delinquent ??" I also love the repeated "All the Young Dudes carry the news" throughout the song, Love. Okay finished it!! also damn didn't realize some people hated this album so much, went to go look at the reviews for a little bit, came back feeling a little dejected. at the end of the day though these are just my little notes I made while listening!! remember your opinion is your own. 😼💗

Aladdin Sane was once upon a time my favourite Bowie album. Nowadays, I think it wouldn't even crack top five. It's a nice continuation of the style of his previous albums, with an added touch of quirkiness, but the songwriting overall feels more indulgent and less rewarding than it was before. It's been a while since I listened to this album in its entirety and it was surprising to realize how little enjoyment I'm getting out of it now. Favourite track: Lady Grinning Soul

It's a jumbled mess of nothing particularly standout; most other artists this would be a 2 and more likely a 1. BUT, Bowie does just have a way with music.

Pretty good pop staples. I'm not the biggest Bowie fan to begin with and this didn't change my opinion on him, though. Fav tracks: Panic In Detroit, Watch That Man

first David Bowie album i listened from the beginning till end and while I acknowledge what a pioneer he is this album was just meh for me.

I haven’t really listened to David Bowie before. Cool, interesting, weird, dramatic - I liked it. Favorite was the eponymous

Some nice stuff. Some iffy stuff. That piano solo on the title track was fucking wild. 3.5

Skubal loose bodies in the elbow? Emotional Valdez meltdown? Fifteen guys on the IL?? PANIC IN HOCKEYTOWN

"Eh. I like David Bowie, not a huge fan, but the album didn't do a ton for me" - 4/20/2025 A year later and my feelings are the same. It's not a particularly special glam rock album, and where it has more diversity, I like Electric Warriors bluesy core far more. There's way too much Bowie on this list.

Pretty decent, revolutionary. Some rly hit but some miss

Solid Bowie.

Better David bowie

Cool, third Bowie. It's surprising how slowly this website is trickling out his albums given that he's the most well-represented artist on the list by a wide margin (those Beatles and Neil Young chumps had to rely on other band members in order to match his number of inclusions). Anyways, I know this album introduced one of Bowie's most famous stage personas and I'm pretty sure it was polarising with critics at the time of release, assuming I'm remembering things correctly. I know this album best for being on the cover of the 2016 revision of the 1001 Albums book. The back of the 2016 book actually has an alternate photo of this album cover where Bowie is looking directly at the camera with his eyes open. Quickly flicking through my scan of the book and being confronted with that image at the end honestly scared me a little when I first encountered it - I was never expecting to be jumpscared by Bowie. Anyways, as far as my expectations for this go, I'm anticipating a more stripped back album in comparison to my previous two outings (Heroes and Low). Perhaps a little avant-garde and warped given my impression of what the contemporary reaction from critics was. Here goes So, I'm finally dusting off this review, aye? It's been nearly three weeks since I rolled and listened to Aladdin Sane, though I kind of ducked out and spent my time assembling pre-written reviews for a while. I actually wrote a pre-written review of "The Next Day" before I got around to finishing my review of this album. Anyways, Aladdin Sane. It's not that bad now that I'm listening to it back on shuffle. I was put off by the simplistic compositions on my first listen, though I think it holds its own pretty competently now. The most prominent aspect of this album is the American influence, taking a page out of the piano rock and hard rock stylings that were popular at the time. This style is generally pulled off well. Bowie's guitars have that iconic buzz to them and are paired nicely with the many brass numbers of this album. The pianos are also quite adept, adding a fun, old-timey sound to the music and injecting a lot of kick into the instrumentals. Bowie's vocals are generally adept, though I still don't fully gel with his style. My only real gripe with this album is that its a little empty, being an album that would definitely benefit from a little variety in the instrumentation. This style of music also just doesn't resonate with me all that much. Still, on the whole this was a competent listen. Book time. Written during Bowie's American tour, with the album being his attempt at making it in America. A concept album about drug addiction which apparently serves as a continuation of the themes on Ziggy Stardust. "...a worthy - if more mercurial - follow-up [to Ziggy Stardust], thanks to [...] diversely addictive songs". The guitarist of this album is good. The producer of this album also produced Magical Mystery Tour and the White Album. The only fault with this album in the eyes of its curator is the cover of "Let's Spend the Night Together", which is a prelude to Bowie's poorly-received cover album. I don't know why I checked the book entry for this album, truth be told. The lightning bolt face paint is more or less synonymous with Bowie's image, so I like to think the music holds its own just as well. I cosign this inclusion.

there’s nothing wrong with this at all but it just didn’t capture me… i didn’t feel enthralled… too bad

First Listen; 3.5; I enjoyed this album. Felt like there was a lot of blues-influenced tracks and reminded me of the Rolling Stones. I also liked some of the experimental sounds and piano parts. Seemed to start slow but picks up after the first 2-3 songs. I also enjoyed it a lot more on the second listen. Like other Bowie, very glam and funky in parts. Favorite Track: Panic in Detroit

me gusto mas que el de ayer tipo3.5/5

This isn't one of Bowie's best in my opinion. It's predecessor is much better, though there are still some good songs here it isn't quite consistent enough. Top picks: Jean Genie, Cracked Actor, Lady Grinning Soul

Good stuff

I’m glad it’s been a few months between Bowies. There was a period where it seemed like I got an album of his every two days. Despite this, I still wasn’t enthralled. I’m not a Bowie fan. It was ok, but kinda made me yawn.

It’s certainly a decent album. There’s lots going on but no songs really grab you and say I am a hit.

I like the word play in the title, but that's about it. I understand David Bowie will always be extremely important and influential. I appreciate that. I just don't find anything that interesting to his music. It's not bad by any means. It's very good. Just not for me.

First two tracks are great. Slows down after that. Iconic Cover.

It’s a cool sound. Not entirely sure it’s for me though

Love some David Bowie. Not my favorite album, but regardless it's still solid.

honestly would be a 2 if it weren't for Jean Genie.

Uh it’s was enjoyable but wasn’t amazed. Stand-outs - The Prettiest Star - Lady Grinning Soul

I don't think I've actually heard any Aladdin Sane songs, but rest assured I know Bowie. I know dada. It's Bowie. Oh Sophie. I know it's basic but I'll always be a Ziggy girl at heart. This is cunt af though. I love Bowie. What is that man?? That's a great question. Watch that man, that's the important part. Ok Aladdin. I see you. Devious piano game. What is this charming beat. I'll love Aladdin sane. He's kinda just doing whatever. It's very Bowie. Like actually what is this guy on about. Why in Detroit. Who knows. Meg machine music. Favourite: Lady Grinning Soul Least favourite: Panic in Detroit

The difficulty of following up one of the greatest albums of all time. Bonus points for Drive In Saturday and Jean Genie, but minus points for borderline show tunes and a boogie woogie Stones cover. 3.5⭐️

Not the best David Bowie album out there.

First David Bowie I've ever heard. It was just kinda rock music. I was expecting something much harder to define. I wonder if this was early in his career. I was pleasantly surprised at the mood shift midway through, but it was too little too late. It's enough for me to look forward to more from DB though! - Poorly produced... guitars are too loud - Surprisingly, this sounds like any other rock music. Yawn - Well, the 2nd half was way more dynamic. If only the first half was more interesting

Muito meh

Por algum motivo não clicou este álbum. Acho que noutro dia qualquer teria dado mais

More interesting than his later stuff, but not as good as his better stuff. Similar sound but more sporadic and harder to latch on to

the 1st track was kind of repetitive but it had a good rock vibe the jazz stuff is unique, it is mid so far

Good, but some of the songs just drag.

Classic Bowie.

I quite like David Bowie however o feel that this album isn’t one of his best it’s an okay album but nothing special that I expect from him

тільки деякі заходять

It was fine. I've never cared for Bowie, I've never disliked him. I like some songs, I nothing most songs. Nothing here really caught my attention.

Quick note while listening, the piano on the title track started out good, then just turned into something so unpleasant to listen to, like a a kid got his hands on a piano for the first time and just started randomly smashing all the keys... Besides that, so far so good.

Good album, but it was just somewhat unremarkable, especially for Bowie's standards. Nothing really standing out here, but the quality is still pretty high. 3/5

The cocaine controls the singer way more than it should.

i had fun but i don't see myself revisiting this album often. the closing track, however.....i played it on loop for hours. one of his best songs.

Some good tunes but not his best work.

las primeras canciones no me han molado pero las últimas muy muy muy top

I definetly prefer other bowie albums. I knew a few songs from this one beforehand, and I liked it overall but just felt like it was lacking something. The chaotic background noises on a few songs also bothered me, but i will defeinetly come back to a couple of them.

Not Bowie's best - but even his misses are better than most hits...

It was alright.

2great songs

I got distracted reading the negative reviews of Nick Drake’s albums but I liked the piano on the title track. It could do with some more chromatism I think. The first half of Time gives me chills. Lady Grinning Soul has nice vocals. The prettiest star is nice but I think would be better as a more intricate (relatively) piano piece. Parts of this are very good. The more boogie-woogie pieces are merely entertaining at best. More generally piano and bass can really complement each other. It’s strange how everyone loves panic in Detroit. It’s definitely of its time. This is a good album. I will relisten. 3/5.

не знаю. не фанат такой музыки

i'm not sure i picked up on his mission with this one. Would I listen again: to try and understand Deserves to be on this list: nah, he's got way better projects 3.2

Not my fave Bowie but still a good time!

Have had a long time aversion to the Jean Genie and so was unsure about this album. Also read in the little intro that it’s perhaps better known for its cover image than any particular songs, which also tracks because I didn’t recognise any of them. Having said that, I loved Watch That Man and Panic in Detroit (why are these not better known?) and appreciated some of the interesting stylistic choices, even if the piano in Aladdin Sane made me feel like I was losing my mind. But I didn’t necessarily enjoy the rest that much

There are only a few songs on this album that have the quality of David Bowie's best work and the rest are a bit generic. I really enjoyed Time, The Prettiest Star, and Lady Grinning Soul.

A couple of hits but nothing special

💘 Panic in Detroit 💘 Time 💘 The Jean Genie

Loved it!

David Bowie is fun but this album was kinda bland in my opinion.Nothing crazy except that second track which was crazy in a weird way. 3/5

First album with Mike Garson on keys. He has huge discord solo in Aladdin sane song, an antiwar song.

good album, songs that are similar in instrumental to Argentine bands that I usually listen to, it has a particular sound, easy to recognize

Joyful, melodic and whit no fear to play with the sounds.

I'd listen to the best of Bowie a lot. Not sure how many from this album would be on it.

nunca he sido muy fanático del flaco Bowie, pero de que el hombre es talentoso, lo es. ojalá meterme las vainas que se metió este man mientras hacía este disco.

Raw and solid David Bowie to its core

3 - it was good but nothing special

I have never been a huge David Bowie fan. I've always liked a few of his songs, but have rarely listened to a full album. This album was OK, but I doubt I would listen to it again. Stand out songs were the obvious ones, "Panic in Detroit" and "The Jean Genie". Maybe I will listen to a few more Bowie albums to campare against this one.

así se siente estar en la falopa

Nice album some great song

Another good David Bowie album. It had been a few months since I had heard this for the first time and I enjoyed it more on this relisten, but Bowie isn't my favorite artist or anything and I think he may be someone I enjoy more for his top tracks and hits than all encompassing great album work.

I've never gotten into this album, even though I am a big Ziggy Stardust fan. I find this period of Bowie's career fairly hit and miss though. Off this, I liked the opening three songs, and The Jean Genie is obviously great, but the rest I can take or leave.

3.5 Stars I can't say I've ever really understood the appeal of David Bowie. The album is pretty good, but it's also not something I will come back to often nor did it make me want to take a trip through his discography.

i’m so sorry 😭

Meh, not a big bowie fan

outro david bowie mds FAVS (top 3): panic in detroit, cracked actor, time mençoes honrosas: drive-in saturday, lady grinning soul gente n sou mt fa dos albuns dele, acho q dos q ja ouvi daqui esse se pa é o melhor, eu curti de ouvir mais q os outros entao AMO! nota final: 3.5/5

chaotic. colorful. cray cray

This was pretty good. Though not what I expected; I thought Bowie would be um, weirder. I did like in the title track the part where he beat the hell out of out of the piano for like 2 minutes. That was cool.

Fun one! Not the biggest Bowie fan but I enjoyed this.

Genuinely what the fuck is that off key piano solo. It’s all like ok not great

I enjoyed a lot of this album but there were a few songs that didn’t do much for me. The Jean Genie is obviously the stand out track.

Would need to relisten to the first half, my gut reaction was I didn’t like that much but really liked the second half

Unlikely to want to listen to this again any time soon.

By a hair, maybe on reputation alone?

The follow-up album to Ziggy Stardust. Glam Rock. Maybe influential and important, but I don't like it as an album. Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: n/a Best Songs The Jean Genie

Bowie indulges the “rockier” side of art rock here, which, personally, is not my favorite side of Bowie. It’s not bad, just a little too straight-ahead rock and roll for my taste. Highlights include “Panic in Detroit” and the dissonant piano playing throughout the record.

Enjoyed it

I love Bowie, but I often find his full records can be a bit hit and miss. Some belters on here, but a few that just pass you by.

Not my fave Bowie but still has some great tunes

I’m so disappointed. This is NOT my David Bowie 3.1

Not my favourite Bowie album.

I loved it as a teenager. Some songs just hit different nowadays.

Solid 70s rock

Interesting they’re not particularly cohesive.

A pretty average David Bowie album that seems to lack a signature song.

The 4th of 8 David Bowie albums on this list and probably my least favorite so far, best part was the album art.

I liked the crazy piano

aladdin sane é uma tremenda música boa!! o resto do álbum caminha entre bom e ok. 3,5.

This deserves five stars for the iconic cover alone. But measured against Bowie's catalogue the music is a solid three.

Not my favorite Bowie by a long shot but still enjoyable. Standouts are for me the titletrack and "Time".

Solid funk

I enjoyed this album but it feels pretty dated to my taste in music. The theatrical approach to rock is pretty cool, but I prob wouldn’t add most of these songs to my playlist. Either way it was a good album and good first impression of David Bowie's music that intrigued me. Fav track is Lady Grinning Soul, least fav is Let’s Spend the Night Together.

I am glad that I've listened to it, but don't really want to listen to it again. Bowie is certainly unique, but this time it was just okay.

Eipä tästä sillee paljoa sanottavaa ole, punapää-bowien musakkia. Paitsi tuo levyn nimikkoraita. Ihan kaameaa. Muuten ei mitään tunteita nostattavaa.

David Bowie on aina kuulostanut David Bowielta. En oo koskaan oikein pitäny lauluäänestä paljoa koskaan, musiikissa on paljon hyviä juttuja, paljon hämärää.

Not bad! Sounds so much like Arctic Monkeys to me. I probably wouldn’t reach for this one, but extra style points for Bowie.

5/10 It's alright, not really my cup of tea, but I can see the appeal. My personal favorite from the album is "Lady Grinning Soul"

I dug this one more than 'Heroes', I think it's a little less experimental maybe, and Bowie isn't singing with his Extreme Bowie Voice this time.

dudoso

I really like when people play instruments "wrong", so I was pleasantly surprised to hear a 3 minute piano solo full of dissonance in the title track a Ziggy Stardust era Bowie record. Unfortunately that didn't happen again except for a very small amount of it in Let's Spend the Night Together, and the rest of it is Ziggy Stardust era Bowie but not Ziggy Stardust. Which is perfectly good, but I can't give all 80 Bowie records that I'm led to believe are in this project 4+ stars.

The piano steals the show on this one

Not one of my faves from Bowie

70s glam rock. First album as a star. Written during US tour. The usual fare. Prefer his other albums.

not as interesting as i remember it

I think I like the imagery of this album more than the album itself. Wasn’t bad, just didn’t quite live up to this vibe for me.

First time listening, so good. Weaves so many different genres of music together as only Bowie does. Weird rock, sometimes jazz, that somehow still hits Fave track: Lady Grinning soul

A bit underwhelmed unfortunately

This did not hit me the way in which I anticipated... After being left pleasantly satisfied by several other Bowie albums through this project I was excited for more. This cover shows me the iconic Bowie image that shouts "glam rock". I think I let my own bias and expectation get in the way of this listen. It's not a bad album, but there weren't many moments that left me interested in going back for more at this time. 3.5 rounded down.

Although being a fan of Bowie at large I've often found it hard to get into full albums of his work, with the notable exception of Low and Ziggy Stardust which are some of my favourite albums of all time. Aladdin Sane never feels line it lives up to its predecessor or its iconic album cover. Would be a 3.5 out of 5 if half stars were an option here since I do still enjoy Bowie's sound and lyricism even if the album doesn't have huge highs for me. Lady Grinning Soul was probably my favourite since I prefer Bowie at his moody and atmospheric rather than overtly rock focused.

Bowie was ahead of time with this one I feel like

Not as good as hunky dory, just kind of exists. No really catchy songs here.

Exceptional record, loved the energy and flow, I have to listen to it more carefully to grasp everything, but it was a good listen.

I took to long to think about what to say to the album. I just didn't like it much and was trying to justify why I didn't - but in the end it's just a matter of personal preference.

6.0/10

Not really my jam

Did listen to this today while working but it really didn’t stick too much. Not bad but not the best from Bowie. Don’t think I’ve listened to this specific album before. 3/5

Lets spend the night together, the jean genie

It was fine... Went on a bit.

Much like the last Neil Young album I reviewed, I love this guy, but there are much better Bowie albums on this list.

A David Bowie classic, if only because of the iconic album cover. The music within is fine. It's pretty standard early 70s glam rock, a la Elton John or any number of other acts. It feels very rock opera, with elements of some Rocky Horror cabaret, which is something I struggle connecting to when there's not a visual story to follow along. Bowie apparently called this 'Ziggy Stardust visits America', so there was at least a vague attempt to tell a cohesive story. This list has succeeded in making me care about David Bowie, and maybe that's why I feel a little disappointed with this record. I know he's made Honky Dory already and he will make Young Americas, both albums I've rated highly...What did I rate Heroes? Maybe this gets the same. I suppose every great journey spends some time in the middle of the road. "Watch That Man" "Panic In Detroit" "The Jean Genie"

Good follow up to Ziggy Stardust

Probably a 3.5. The last two songs are probably the best on the album.

Songs just don’t hit as much It’s a alright album but not his best Gets better towards the back end of the album This isn’t me saying I didn’t like it I did and would listen again

One of those albums where I can't put my finger on 'why', but it just didn't click for me. It's a bit all over the place, both lyrically and musically. No real standout tracks either, a bit of an underwhelming effort for me. 2.5/5

1 good song

Signs of better things to come Jean Genie still the best to dance to.

I enjoyed it, though not the most inventive or exciting Bowie there is. I think Time was my favorite track, and Panic in Detroit hits as a Detroit resident.

Just an average early 1970s album

Good-ish

En klassisk Bowie, dock inte top 5 av hans plattor, men väl nr 6. 😊

The title track is dope. It ain't Ziggy Stardust but it's alright. Plus a Stones cover.

The first song was nice, but the second one - Aladdin Sane, which is also the name of the album, had a lot of off-tune music like in some jazzy songs, which I'm not a huge fan of, but the album is overall alright. I think that Cracked Actor was pretty nice actually.

Definitely Bowie but not one I'd use to introduce people to him

mid bowie

Classic glam rock Bowie...I like it. Some avant-garde jazz piano really spices up the title track, said no one ever. I don't understand the appeal of atonal music. I think I like Ziggy Stardust and Bowie's Greatest Hits because this started promising but is losing me. I bet this is Queen's favorite album. I don't dislike the cover of Let's Spend the Night Together, but it is a pale imitation of the Stones' version. Jean Genie is the hit. It's ok. That's probably the best assessment of this album as well.

Fun cover of 'let's spend the night together'. Solid album I've somehow never heard.

I like this album I mean its David Bowie. I think I just am not as into this genre but I still love this. The piano in the songs is my favorite its so beautiful. Time is definitely my favorite song.

Decent. Some of the songs weren’t as memorable, but still enjoyed.

conventionally good music, but nothing i see myself returning too.

Enjoyed this, included some new to me tracks.

some bonkers stuff going on in the bg, enjoyed but didn’t hit

Yep it’s another Bowie album

I thought I was a bigger Bowie fan than I apparently am. There’s nothing bad about this album, but there’s also nothing great about it either.

For an artist with the reputation of Bowie, and an album cover so iconic, I was expecting big things. Unfortunately, I was mildly disappointed. It was, in glam rock fashion, dramatic. Yet none of the tunes really caught my ear. Although some were at times interesting, such as the soaring end to Lady Grinning Soul or the bluesy opening track, it was slightly underwhelming.

Back to back Bowie! Young Americans yesterday and this one today, two completely different sounding albums two years apart. This one is early ‘70s rock mode and surprisingly heavy at times along with the regular tropes of the day of groove and grandeur. Great to finally hear this album and would definitely play this again.

Not essential, but not bad enough to warrent 2 stars.

parts were way better than I expected and parts were worse ? also didn't expect some of the songs to be as graphic as there were.. not quite pos or neg thing just an observation I suppose

I think I’m just salty because Bowie is SOOOOO over represented on this list. This album is fine. Well produced, solid music. But nothing spectacular for me, and the closer I listened the less I liked it.

All I'm hearing is Rolling Stones outtakes and weirdness for weirdness' sake. It's alright. Favorites: Panic in Detroit, The Jean Genie Would I listen to it again: Probably not

Style over substance, mostly.

Pretty good - cant beat a bit of Bowie

Even though this album is an undeniable classic, every time I try to listen to it, I don't understand why it's so popular. Not mine

Watch That Man - 7/10: I really like the beat/music/instruments and the chorus. Aladdin Sane - 6/10: I like the beat. Drive-In Saturday - 5/10: I like his vocals. Panic in Detroit - 5/10: Just wasn't super memorable for me. Cracked Actor - 6/10: I like the beat and vocals. Time - 5/10: I like the intro. The Prettiest Star - 5/10: Again, wasn't super memorable. Let's Spend the Night Together - 5/10: I like the intro. The Jean Genie - 6/10: I like the guitar. Lady Grinning Soul - 6/10: I like the intro. Overall Score: 56/100 Overall Rating: 6/10 - Bowie is a classic artist that everyone loves. I don't know many songs by him, but I admire him and his work. I did enjoy this album, but not as much as I thought I would. It was a great album though.

I feel like I need to learn more Bowie, and this is a perfect example. Seems like a great record.

Absolutely love the title, some of the songs are amazing but others are so experimental that it doesn’t always leave it to easy listening

Not really my style

Decent albumpje. Bowie beschreef "I was trying to move into the next area – but using a rather pale imitation of Ziggy as a secondary device. In my mind, it was Ziggy Goes to Washington: Ziggy under the influence of America." Added to Liked songs: Drive-In Saturday, Cracked Actor, Time, Lady Grinning Soul

Nice album

The type of rotten sugar tooth glam rock only Bowie could deliver. Fun album but it does feel like B side of Ziggy Stardust. Worst Track: Prettiest Star Favorite Track: Lady Grinning Soul

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. I enjoyed the piano playing in particular. Wouldn't rush to listen to again, but a decent album

5/10 Best songs: Panic in Detroit, Cracked Actor Creative, experimental, but like, not really my style of music. I think I like later David Bowie a lot better.

Weakest of the 'classic' Bowie albums so far. Jean Genie is still an absolute banger.

It’s not my favorite Bowie but he still rocks

I understand why people love him, he is good, just not my style

Drive-In Saturday, Time, and Lady Grinning Soul were the highlights for me. Although I’m not a big Bowie guy. The guitar in Time was transformative.

Favourite Songs: The Jean Genie

Otroligt.

Very glam rock, feels like Bowie doing the Rolling Stones at some points, but that's obviously not a bad thing. There are fewer of his more heartfelt tracks in this one compared to his previous albums and more experimentation with jazz and experimental concepts. To me this feels like a bit of a transition album between his early stuff and his later 70s work like station to station. However, that doesn't mean this album is not one of his most seminal.

No my taste in music

Not my vibe but I respect Bowie.

Well, It's David Bowie. It is not my style of music but I appreciated much of it. He's just so iconic.

I liked “Lady Grinning Soul“

Upon first listen as a whole this album is rather mid. There are moments where you can hear Bowie’s brilliance. Replays might be needed to get a higher score. This just didn’t draw enough of my focus for that to happen

Худший из лучших альбомов любимого автора. Лучшая песня - Lady Grinning Soul.

wsm spoko taki rockowy nie do konca moje klimaty znaczy poza moja strefa komfortu dodalam pare co mi sie podobalo do playlisty szczerze nw co mige powiedziec na poczatku byly jakby historie opowiadane i w srodku bylo rzeczywiscie z perspektywy bowiego pozniej na koncu o jakiejs laseczce piosenka musialabym drugi raz przesluchac chyba generalnie cool chill

Funky and fun

i feel like this album feels different from bowie's other albums in a bad way. it's not outstanding or special in anyway but it also isn't terrible

The song Aladdin Sane made me insane. With such an iconic album cover, the music doesn’t live up to the hype.

This is one of the first Bowie albums I’ve listened to and I enjoyed it. I can see why this wasn’t a classic when it came to his records. I could be wrong about this, but I feel like it lack some of the star power that maybe Ziggy Stardust from what I’ve heard I haven’t experienced that album full, but this one fell a bit unsure of itself. I read that he wrote this from a place of stardom, which I feel like I can understand it’s almost as if he’s trying to upkeep his identity, but also present something unique and outside the box with some of his production choices and composition choices. I feel like some of them are unnecessary and a little pretentious maybe even just feeling like he wanted to alienate some of his listeners or present himself as still like a forward, thinking artist while still being very popular. I’m not sure if this is accurate but some of the songs feel that way I’m not sure it’s it’s interesting. I don’t think it’s that interesting and I also don’t think it’s that catchy either so I don’t feel that there is any really remarkable songs on this album it’s kind of just feels like it just feels like an album that slightly forgettable while you know being good quality, it just doesn’t stick out in any particular way while trying to stick out that makes sense so yeah it’s a bit performative. I think he was playing to the audience in a way. I think he probably looks back on this project with a bit of contempt you know as you’re navigating that new position as an artist I think that can inform some interesting choices in the studio and I think that maybe got him slightly cause I know there’s projects after this that are a lot more groundbreaking for thinking from his perspective.

Harrison Ford Bro goin crazy on da pianer Bro goin nuts on der saxerfone

Was a bit too jazzy for me, the piano in one song was very all over the place

6/10 - не слушал

*1973. *This was my album of the day on 12/26. It's now 4/11 and I've tried a dozen times to rate this one, but it's so forgettable to me that I don't have any recollection of what I just listened to. *I give up. It gets an automatic 2.5 stars because it's Bowie. I'll round up because there was nothing bad here. Just meh. RATING - 6/10

Kind of interesting that this kinda a nothing album for David Bowie, but "Aladdin Sane" the character is so famous / iconic. This album is fine, but nothing special to it in my opinion. Low 3.

ستايل التسعينات اللي ما احبه واشوفه ممل٢

It was okay, and I'd listen to it again. As an album it feels a little disjointed and not cohesive, which isn't something I expected from Bowie.

Solid. I did not enjoy the jazz piano on the title track, but the rest of it was better than expected given I don't typically go for Bowie. 3.2

its nice just not really my cup of soup 7/10

Je pouvais pas mettre sous la moyenne pour David Bowie. Même si j'avoue ça m'a un peu perdu le style

I feel weird not being blown away by a David Bowie album! But this was just….ok

While not as strong as the Ziggy Stardust album, I think that this still holds up well. I gave it a few listens to really let myself get a feel for the album, and I concluded that it feels like a natural shift all things considered. It's got the quirky Bowie charm but doesn't necessarily take the same risks the Ziggy Stardust album did. In some ways, that benefits it. It was charming.

A fine Bowie album. More fun than I expected.

not his best

Not as good as the next day in my opinion, but i still enjoyed it. becoming a bit of a bowie fan.

Perfectly sane.

Need to run it again. Solid release from the man himself. Top Track: Watch That Guy

Interesting not completely to my taste. Only recognised 2 songs.

Старичок делает

This is solid Bowie

Feels good to have the original Bowie instead of the dozens copycats in this list.

Lady grinning soul is my favorite song on this. I like the piano throughout the album, I frequently don’t understand the lyrics, but some really hit. “She’s uncertain if she likes him but she knows she really loves him” - drive-in Saturday

Not my fav. Bowie album but pretty good.

Not a huge fan, but wasn’t too bad

Fun rock album. Would t say it was as good as his others

Not too bad

Better than Coldplay

I don't understand Bowie

Overall: 7/10 Favourites: Lady Grinning Soul, Watch That Man, Let's Spend The Night Together, Cracked Actor

not particular the type of music that i would gravitate towards. i would definitely need to be in the mood to throw this on. there was a point where i did not even know when the song end and a new song started.

Usually I really enjoy David Bowie but this one didn’t connect with me.

Bowie is great, I think I just expected more.

Early 70s Bowie: chugging guitar riffage, avant garde abstract piano and sax, grim alienated dissolution in the lyrics, Stonesy sleaze. Bowie always has a few tracks you just don't want to cue up, but this record hangs together pretty well.

I like the musical theater vibe of many of these songs, and “Panic in Detroit” is pretty amazing.

This was fine? Certainly not one of the Bowie albums I’d include if I were making the list myself. Kinda liked some of the piano shenanigans. Wasn’t that special. Might listen again and maybe move it up to a 4 someday . Favorite Track: Time

Better than most Bowie - but still Bowie.

Sympathique, ça me rappelle souvent Alice Cooper Goes To Hell. Mais ça me donne pas plus envie d’en savoir plus que ça, vu que le type est sévèrement problématique.

It wasn’t my favorite of Bowies and it felt all over the place
