Reviews (page 8 of 14)

4.5, rounded down unfortunately. It's a wonderful album, but when I compare it to other Bowie albums there are other ones I like more. So I have to save the 5 for those...

One of Bowie’s classics, perfect apart form a couple songs

Another Bowie classic! Good mix of songs/genres.

Bowie pulls off this trick he's done with me before where at the start I'm thinking this guy is just a rock and roller with a great makeup artist and photographer, but by the end he's sold me on the Bowie magic once again.

New to me. I'm more familiar with Bowie's Berlin trilogy than his earlier Stardust era stuff. Pretty good, I like the sort of raunchy Stones vibe but TBH I'd probably rather just listen to the Stones for that. Enjoyable album though.

Mejor de lo que esperaba, muy escuchable. Tema preferido: Drive-In Saturday

This album is a staple to any David Bowie fan. When the single is featured on most greatest hits and it’s the weakest song in the album, that says something. The piano work on Aladdin Sane is stellar.

Been dodging the Bowie discography forever so I was looking forward to this album. The first track didn't grab me and "Alladin Sane" might work better as a closing track given the eerie outro jam--good tune nonetheless. "Panic in Detroit" is new to me and I dig that blend of proto-punk and talking-heads-like world percussion. Didn't think Bowie would write a gritty song like Cracked Actor--hanging out with Iggy paid off. A Stones cover seems like a strange choice here. "Jean Genie" is a bop though. Overall, prettay, prettay good. Wish the gritty theme was consistent throughout the album, but perhaps thats alot to ask of a star on Bowie's level. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Another brilliant album…

Really good album - lots of interesting ideas and developments from TRAF

Jean genieee

Only Bowie can make this old school genre of rock feel more awesome as can be. But I think I won’t listen to it again .

My first full Bowie album and I’ve got to say I’m a fan now! The piano and Bowie’s vocals really set this one apart for me. “Lady Grinning Soul” is hauntingly beautiful and the title track’s piano riffage is insane.

Early 70s pop thing. Quite enjoyable, strong vibes.

NICEEEEE 8..5/10

7.5/10

I enjoyed the eclectic sounds present in this album. No two songs sounded the same. I’ve never been big on the glam but have been more appreciative of Bowie’s production genius as of late.

great fucking vibes ngl te pone de buen humor high energy good for high energy focus or even exercise

Fantastic, truly.

Some great guitar riffs. Not my most familiar Bowie project but enjoyable nonetheless

A melhor música do álbum é o auto intitulado Aladdin Sane. Nota:8/10 Dia: 19/05/2026

I like David Bowie, not sure why they would choose this album though.

Ones I knew were good, eg Saturday night drive Early ones a bit too active and manic for background during work

.oigoigiogoig

It's Bowie. Haven't listened to this one before, only heard a bit of bowie, but its a nice album

Ziggy Glam fall out. Best Tracks: Watch That Man, Drive-In Saturday, Jean Genie

Production: 13/20 Songwriting: 16/20 Innovation: 14/20 Bangers: 20/20 Emotional response: 16/20 =79 Oooooh one mark off a 5!

I like Bowie sometimes, but this album wasn't really my taste...

Excellent. ****

Geen fan van Bowie, maar na dat zouteloze gezang van afgelopen dagen is dit een verademing. Fris en gevarieerd.

Classic

I think it’s pronounced Bowie Never listened to this album before, I think I’ll give his other stuff a chance after this.

Not as good as Ziggy Stardust or Hunky Dory. But still had several good tracks on it.

For me this is Bowie in his core competency. I love Ziggy, and Bowie even says this is Ziggy goes to America. I love the glitz and glamourous treatment of the gritty subject matter. A lot of very pretty music about drugs, sex and violence. You could really hear the American influence on this album. Lots of blues guitar riffs, old doo-wop melodies, and even some plunky vaudevillian piano as well. "Drive in Saturday," "Panic in Detroit," and "Jean Jeanie" were my faves. Then I heard "Lady Grinning Soul," and DAMN! Flamenco guitar all up in there, with those fluttering keys mmmmmhmm that was a special way to close it out. I really loved this album but I've got to go with a 4 because this really was Ziggy 2 but just not quite as good.

I'm guessing there are like 6 Bowie albums on this list. Which makes sense. Include Let's Dance you cowards!

Bowie that I’ve never really listened to. I liked it.

How can one not like Bowie?

I don't particularly enjoy David Bowie but he was a huge impact in rock music

Typical Bowie style album with lyrics to match. A nice driving album.

Cool album! I personally think it says more about the rock sound at that time, than it does of Bowie, but it is still characteristic of the Bowie persona.

beautiful

Not usually a huge Bowie fan, but this was a pretty fun listen Favorite Tracks: “Watch That Man,” “Panic In Detroit,” and “The Jean Genie”

Really solid album, first time I’ve really listened to any Bowie, especially from before the 80s era. I’m excited to see where that goes

Very rocky and out there, Bowie is always good

Holy Crap David Bowie. You managed to make this, Transformer and Hunky Dory in the span of 3 years? This is wonderful, the Birth of Ziggy Stardust, the honky tonk. This is tock and roll, where hunky dory could get weird and wild this is grooving. Like a Jean Genie, I want to spend my time with aladdin sane

good as you'd expect

It's epic Bowie. Glam and decadence. It's amazing how layered the rock sound is. Other than the strange Let's Spend the Night cover, it is solid and has several absolute classics.

Gotta love some Bowie

I was hearing a lot of texture in the songs, lots of layers to listen to. I like the heavy rock n roll, and simultaneous sophistication he brings to it. I haven't listened to many Bowie records front to back, really enjoying it.

David Bowie strikes again! Going back to the early 70's era of Bowie is always a treat. This album seems to be his first venture into the more bluesy American style that was prevalent in his next few albums. But what makes this album triumph againts the likes of Young Americans and Pin-ups is the perfect balance it strikes between experimental and accessible, earning it a place in the big three albums of Bowie's Ziggy Stardust days. Unfortunately, this album is the Larry Hemsworth of the Ziggy albums. Sure it's good, but Diamond Dogs and Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust are the more attractive brothers. There are definitely less iconic Bowie songs from this album, but the songs here are all really solid and work together to create a great album. Bowie's vocal performance on this album is top-notch, probably one of his best. It was much less put-on and showey, more natural but still retaining that iconic glamorous feeling. My verdict of this album is that it's totally worth listening to if you're a Bowie fan, but if you want to get into Bowie then go for Diamond Dogs, which perfects the same musical ideas presented in this album, with catchier and more thematically interesting songs. Favorite track: Time Least Favorite: The Jean Genie

"Time"

Production: 13/20 Songwriting: 16/20 Innovation: 14/20 Bangers: 20/20 Emotional response: 16/20 =79 Oooooh one mark off a 5!

Yeah yeah yeah yeah fine

Enjoyed it.

Hadn't listened to this one in awhile and I really enjoyed listening to it again. Some great tracks but as an album I don't think it holds up as well as others in his catalog. My favorite track is probably "Time."

I liked more here than I thought. There's so much David Bowie blindspots I have, and while everything on this album isn't absolutely amazing, there is a lot of production and intent going on, nothing seems half-assed. I enjoyed the janky-ness of some of the playing, 3.5 up to 4.

Super engaging, diverse, and well-produced. More enjoyable than other Bowie I've listened to. Slaps.

Holy T. Rex vibes Didn't get as into it as some other David Bowie albums, possibly because I knew them better

At times raw and almost primal. Intense tempos and interesting lyrics.

I think I liked Hunky Dory more overall, but this was still a good album. The first two tracks were great. It felt more polished than HD. I don’t have a whole lot to say about it specifically but I may revisit when I’m more familiar with Bowie’s early catalog. I feel like these discographies (for a lot of artists, not just Bowie) are so massive I want to compare the albums with each other in the context of the full career. Al this to say, fine album, better than a lot of the ones we’ve listened to, worse than others.

Good album but just shy of a masterpiece/5 stars

Cool as hell. Need to listen again, a little better.

, 8/10

solid bowie - got some funky, weird stuff going on, while still being accessible, but doesn't reach his typical highs

didn't get a chance to listen closely, so need to go back to this one

I enjoyed it more than I expected. Probably closer to a 3.5/ 3.7ish.

Decent David Bowie album. 8/10

There are some excellent moments on this album, but as a whole, I lose interest in the second half and find the lyrics not especially engaging. Good - but possibly a little overrated.

i love bowie but this one was pretty forgettable, not really my vibe.

This was ok. Not his best, but nowhere near his worst either! Jean Genie is good. 3.25

Good album. I know Jean Genie was the big hit feom this album, but I can't get enough of Panic in Detroit, that is one fantastic song

So I have been embracing Bowie. And since this project has enabled me to really get to know his discography in a way I never would have before, I can say definitively that this, right here is a point where we part ways. Ziggy stardust? 5. Station to Station? 4 or 5. Blackstar? 5. Heroes? 2 The Next Day? 3 This? Maybe 3. It’s too frenetic. The jazz piano and the two saxophones, elements I SHOULD love, are more distracting and grating than not. I actually hate the Rolling Stones cover. I don’t like Bowie’s take on the blues generally. So yeah. 3 Boolean: True - am glad I am getting into Bowie

When will I accept that David Bowie is just not for me? I'll keep trying I guess! This was ok, felt kind of cinematic operatic glam rock. It's got lots of great elements, I don't know why I just don't connect with much of his music?

He’s a great artist, and production value is good. But there’s something about Bowie that I don’t like.

Did not like his rendition of Let's spend the night together.

Not the best Bowie album, and hopefully there's better to come. Jean Genie a classic, and much enjoyed Drive-In Saturday and Lady Grinning Soul. But Aladdin Sane is dragged down by the discordant piano interlude after a good start, and the cover of an average Rolling Stones track is worse than the original.

Something about this album just felt so fake and phoned in. Not terrible, but a very disappointing listen.

chioll

Thoroughly fine.

Very Bowie, in a good way. Enjoyable.

Not my favorite Bowie album. It was fine. Ok. Upper 3 I suppose.

Not my favourite Bowie album

To have this album follow Iggy was prophetic. While not filled with chart toppers and radio songs this is still a great album to explore. Whether you are invested in the personas of Bowie or just want to enjoy his catalogue this album will not disappoint.

Was good but didn’t love it. Think there is better bowie. 5/10

pretty good. mainly like the instrumentation.

First time hear this and just didn’t love it right away will still listen to it

Jeg synes Bowie har noe kult, men det er veldig teatralsk og. Jeg har aldri vært hooked, men jeg tipper man burde vært der da han var stor, men morsomt og utvilsomt bra

For parts of this album, I almost understood what people see in David Bowie

I think he has better albums, but this one is still fun to listen to.

Aladin Sane is good. A classic. But it isn't a Bowie album I find myself coming back to. It's got some decent tracks and nothing stands out as particularly bad to my tastes, but it won't have me seeking it out. 3 star. High 3 star, but 3 nonetheless

I really like Aladdin Sane. I listened to it thrice today and had a pretty good time. I just think it doesn’t really come close to its predecessor - which is a hard feat to achieve but a lot of things surrounding the album point back to Ziggy Stardust. The cover shows Bowie, possibly as a new character or a continuation of Ziggy and Bowie himself said Aladdin Sane is Ziggy going to Washington. So yeah, the comparison invites itself. Musically though, i don’t think it comes close to Ziggy. The album lacks cohesion and a clear musical and lyrical focus, in my opinion. The songs themesleves are mostly great - Watch That Man opens the album and makes a big statement, though that energy gets lost within the next few songs ( i’m just puzzled why his vocals are so quiet on the song - is this intentional?), though it picks up again somewhat towards The Jean Genie at the end of the album. Incidentally, these are the two songs from the album that left me the coldest. Then there is some more experimental stuff like the title track and Time - the definitive album highlight for me. The songs are all good to great individually, but they don’t paint an overall picture of the concept Bowie attempted. I still really like it and enjoy pretty much every song, but it doesn’t reach the heights Bowie reached before and after.

not my favorite bowie record, but the prettiest star and time are really great songs

It's fine... a little too jazzy for my tastes but very good and I respect the hell out of him and all his music, obviously.

David Bowie! I'm a fan, but don't think this is his finest album . There's enough admirable stuff on here. Prettiest Star is nice, Jean Genie us classic. The Stones cover unnecessary. Still a great musical production.

david mid bowie on this album. not ziggy peak

Not my favourite Bowie. Good singles

la segunda mitad muy buena

1st listen, enjoyed, a bit more sprawling than expected.

The most safe 'pop' record of the lot

5/10 - Personal preference here but wasn't striking to me at all, but I recognise that his music is undeniably good

Drive in saturday Time Foda /\ /\ Gostei de lets spend the night together, mas eh foda ouvir sabendo q ele era pedofilo..

223. nice

This is a generous 3. Bits of this I really disliked, the more obviously glam styled tracks in particular as well as those with boogie woogie piano over the top of it (I’m looking at you ‘let’s spend the night together’…). There are elements of tracks that are decent at times, but this is too few and far between to be truly top tier album.

No fav song

great album

Not in his top 3

Stark trea igen... Bra skiva utan något riktigt fett

Låten Aladin sane älskar jag. Resten är rätt schysst också

A chameleon has been used to describe David Bowie many times. Unfortunately I am not creative enough to come up with another term. It is spot on. David Bowie is an incredible, beautiful, chameleon.

Entry #5 from Bowie. This one includes “The Jean Genie” and a fast-paced cover of “Let’s Spend the Night Together”. There are a few other good tracks on the album, but not enough for an above average rating.

Ej peak-Bowie

Solid - one classic track, the rest works but nothing really standing out.

I was surprised at myself that I didn't like this as much as the other Bowie albums I've listened to so far. I didn't hate it, but this one seems less focused on the art and more focused on just making a rock album. You'd think a rocker like myself would like something like this, but I like my David Bowie when he, and the music, are a little more out there; this felt like he played it safe. There's some good songs, but it could have been better. One of the most iconic album covers ever, though, so it's got that going for it. Which is nice. 3/5

Ganske bra, men ikke helt min type musikk. Relativt rolig rock 7/10.

It was fine! Maybe two songs I really enjoyed, the rest were okay. I like Bowie, and I get how cool this was in the 70s, but I can’t see putting most of these in my regular rotation.

I initially went into listening to this record thinking I would really like it, being a fan of The Jean Genie. To my dismay I was kinda let down by the record as a whole. The song is textbook early glamrock; psychedelic pop at its finest. But it where it sells short is some of the compositional/creative decisions where for, lack of a better word, lackluster. 3 solid stars.

Maybe I just expect more of Bowie after the last number of albums we’ve listened to, but this was honestly pretty mid for his standards

Not my favorite Bowie album.

première fois, très sympa, on voit bien le son que produit bowie, ça baigne dans les années 70. Très cool

Not bad! 3/5

Very bowie, not quite my type of music

I listened to "Low" by Bowie first, and obviously that one and this one are pretty different. This is considered peak Bowie, after all. I can't really pinpoint a specific genre, but I hear maybe some blues and elements I've heard used in '80s pop. But above all, the music is unique and different, and many times sonically interesting, which seems to encapsulate Bowie's style. I particularly enjoyed "Panic in Detroit" and "Cracked Actor".

Sorry David Bowie but I've always found the Aladdin Sane name to be a bit lame.. But how is the music? Typical Bowie - piano driven rock with mystical/psychedelic elements. Actually, as we move on we have more guitar-driven rocky tracks. Quite like early glam. So we have a mix of track types. I like the music in the title track but the name is grating on me.. Panic in Detroit has the kind of rhythms Rolling Stones used, but less bluesy guitars. Jean Genie is also Stones-like Best track (except Jean Genie) - Aladdin Sane (nothing else stood out) 3 stars - Bowie goes Stones - didnt grab me much.

Iconic album cover, less iconic songs

With exception to that insanely abstract piano solo this was a much more straight forward rock album than I was expecting.

The only thing that really grabbed me about this album was the iconic cover. The rest is fine, but I didn’t like it as much as I hoped. 3/5

inégal. des pistes très bien, d'autres un peu faciles

This is the seventh of Bowie‘s nine albums on this countdown that I’ve had, and while I generally have liked everything prior to this, even more so than I ever expected, this one just didn’t hit for me. Not that any of the songs are bad it’s just none of them are great either. A lot of tracks on here that are pretty average, decent to listen to, but not blowing me away. To me it sounds like he’s trying to actually follow up on Ziggy Stardust and it just didn’t come close to reaching those levels. Three stars

This was an odd album for me. Half the songs were pretty good while the other half felt kinda weak for Bowie. Panic in Detroit, Time, Let's Spend The Night Together were the highlights on this one.

Album is fun, lots of variety. No ziggy Stardust but pretty g

Good music but I couldn’t connect with it emotionally

Jevnt over bra greier, men har ingen skikkelige høyda. 3.5

Just doesn’t really scratch my brain like it apparently should?

Didn't particularly land with me this one, better than young Americans but probably not any of the others, so I'd say a 3. Don't recognise any songs other than jean genie and while it had a interesting sound and style as you might expect from DB, it was missing other standout tracks.

good but not great

Oh man I wanna rat this higher because Lady Grinning Soul is one of the most perfect songs ever but the rest of the album isn't quite on the same level.

Un poco ruidoso pero tiene unas excelentes

Parts of this album actually remind me of The Wall by Pink Floyd.

I don’t know if this is actually that extraordinary. What Bowie always has going for him is lyrics and a distinctive voice, which are present here, but the songwriting doesn’t really do it for me. The first track definitely sounds like The Rolling Stones, which must be where all the comparison come from, but I don’t think the rest of it does at all. I think that the last track, Lady Grinning Soul, might’ve been my favorite because it’s the weirdest. The rest of this is almost formulaic. Maybe it’s because he came up with formula but I don’t think that’s it. I didn’t get a lot out of this. It’s still Bowie so it’s good but I expected a lot more.

The Aladdin Sane track got really annoying. The rest is pretty much Bowie. Not that I like it very much, but it is not bad either

Listen on: Spotify (2013 remaster) Listening experience: Interrupted. Driving and house jobs I wanted to like this but I couldn’t get into it. The title track with the chaotic piano was very ill timed with some stressful navigating in the car. I’ll have to give this one another shot (this is the first Bowie album of the project and I know there are many more to come). This was probably not the logical entry point!

This was fine, but not my favourite of the Bowie albums we’ve heard so far. I was only familiar with “The Jean Genie”, and it was definitely the standout. The rest were okay - nothing special, but nothing terrible either.

Rating:★★★ I liked Time and Aladdin Sane, and the rest had its moments. I don't dislike the album but it isn't great for me either.

Aladdin sane sounds amazing Moody glammy and totally atmospheric, but the lyrics don't always click with the music. Great vibe, uneven songs. I'd give it a 3/5

I like Bowie, but to paraphrase the great Alan Partridge, when asked what my favourite Bowie album is my response would be "I'd have to say, The Best of David Bowie". Maybe that will change as I get through more of his stuff but for now it holds. I guess to be more specific for this album, I'll say that the Prettiest Star is both undeniably Bowie, and also undeniably bland - and the same can be said for many of the songs on here.

Ne volim Bowiea. Očito me nijedan album neće ubijediti. A albuma ima previše. Bez ikakve potrebe.

never understood the Bowie hype, still don't. the instrumentals were great but I think anyone else could've done the singing and it might have been a better album

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would- I dont consider myself to be a huge David Bowie fan. But there were a lot of good b-sides that varied a lot in sound (but sometimes drifting into bizarre). Overall- good album

É um album sem dúvida nenhuma, é um albúm único, inovador para época lançado e para hoje também. Nunca ouvi nada parecido.

I had never heard any of these Bowie songs!

Zit heel mooi in elkaar. Voelt zeker niet als vroege jaren 70. Echt tijdloos. Beetje de rock van de tijd met een geplastificeerd, en dus tijdloos, bowie-laagje eroverheen. Wel ook zeker met wat piano quirks er tussendoor Wat lichte bangers maar niks spreekt me direct enorm aan.

Like most of Bowie's music for me. It was alrightish.

It was fine, but none of the Bowie that I enjoy.

Feeling a strong ⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2 on this one, maybe a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ if I revisit it. I listened through a couple times. The title track is a bit too drugged out and weird for me, but the back half of the album is full of some good songs. I don’t know if I knew really any of these and I’ve listened to a decent amount of Bowie.

I really enjoyed this. There were some great songs and I liked the overall vibe of the album - bit mental. Think Bowie did a good job here but I can’t give it a 4, unfortunately.

Mixed thoughts with this one. I think half the album i liked, and the other half was not too good. Songs lime Alladin Sane and the honky tonky strange circus songs i reslly didnt like. But songs like Cracked Actor i did really like. I think its just my taste in music. I cant gove this anything more than a 3. Wouldn't listen again.

i see we are an insane lad.. she's experimental... i see... almost lost me but i think we're coming back it's a three point five in my heart. it's definitely good and i wouldn't complain if it was background music, I didn't get bored but i also wasn't particularly compelled by anything.

Iconic cover, but was never one of my favorite Bowie records. This decade may as well have been an eternity for Bowie with how many eras and sound shifts he went through, and this might be his most recognizable persona of those many lifetimes. Glam rock was never my style, though, so these early ‘70s Bowie records (minus Ziggy) have always been tough for me to get into - the Berlin era might be my favorite Bowie. Happy to have given this another spin though - I enjoyed it more this time!

Eines der schlechteren bowie alben

A record that I've always felt had some big issues- the glam stuff feels a bit like old hat after it reached its pinnacle on Ziggy. He begins to touch on an experimental sound here, but it's not explored enough to make the entire experience feel cohesive. The production is fantastic, and the musicianship top-notch (I see you Mick Ronson). This re-listen only solidified, however, just how inconsistent the songs are. For every smile and thumbs up I give songs like "Panic in Detroit" and "Lady Grinning Soul," I raise an eyebrow at the messiness of "Cracked Actor" and "Let's Spend the Night Together." A good album, but not a great one.

i hadn't listened to this album before so mostly i just know it as "the one with the cover everyone knows". yknow, the "🧑‍🎤" one. it took me an embarrassingly long time to realise the pun in the album name. its pretty good. not the best bowie i've heard but i always enjoy his voice so i cant imagine not finding at least something to like on one of his albums....? and sure enough there's a couple bangers here. "cracked actor" is the obvious standout to me with the guitars driving and wailing, sounding as ready to fuck as the character it portrays, but i also really enjoy mike garson's wild piano solos in the title track and the chaotic cover of "let's spend the night together" is great too. the internal conflict he was feeling over his sudden rise to stardom really comes through in this album i think. what really caught me off guard about this album is "the jean genie". first off i didn't even realise it was a bowie song, but also it's like, kind of the weakest track on the album imo? i really don't get why this is the one that popped off hardest as a single, or really even why it was chosen to be released as a single over the other, stronger candidates here, but maybe it's just another case of overexposure on my part. who can say. i'm kinda torn between a 3 or 4 on this one, but i think realistically if i'm going back to this one i'm largely just going back for "cracked actor", so i'm gonna lean towards a 3. it's a strong 3 tho. a fun album, but again, not bowie's best.

David Bowie and Neil Young must have collaborated to put together this list cuz there's no reason for either one l, as much as I like them both, to have this many albums on this list and leave out so many other greats. Still this is a pretty decent album but nothing that interesting. His other albums are much better

Not my sound atm, but most def worth a revisit in the near future.

good bowie album. a bit overrated imo though 6/10. First listen tracklist ranking: 1. Lady Grinning Soul 2. Panic in Detroit 3. Time 4. Aladdin Sane 5. The Jean Genie 6. The Prettiest Star 7. Drive-In Saturday 8. Watch That Man 9. Cracked Actor 10. Let's Spend the Night Together

3.5 Other David Bowie albums: The Man Who Sold The World (1970) 4/5 Lodger (1979) 4/5

A few great tracks

David Bowie, good, but not as his best.

Everything sounds the same

Not bad

Not the best openers. Watch That Man - piano and some Status Quo type riffing. Aladdin Sane - more piano to the fore (or forte!). Niceish until the cat runs over the keys half way through. Drive-In Saturday with a doo wop style is better - better vocals from DB. Not a big fan of Panic in Detroit - Stonesy feel to the guitars. Also not anything special about the later Stones cover. Cracked Actor is a good glammed up song to begin with but…. Then Time is more than a bit too theatrical. Then the next one is doo wop and theatrical. Quite a negative review so far. Maybe I’m missing something and should listen to the lyrics a bit more. 4 for Jean Genie. The rest is between a 2 and 3. Generous 3.

Not his best

I think there’s a couple of Bowie albums on this list which are questionable additions, Aladdin Sane is one of them. It is by no means a bad album. It’s just not up to the high standards of many of his other albums included on this list. Solid three and a bit.

Not my favorite Bowie but still incredibly solid. A few of the slower songs don’t really work for me so I’ve only got this at a three but that may be grading unfairly on a curve because of his other superb output.

Ikke hans beste verk.

I appreciate the experimentation in Aladdin Sane (the song), but if anything brings me back to this album, it will be the last four tracks.

It was okay.

Oh good it's David Bowie. Oh no it's Aladdin Sane. Could've been better, but could've been worse.

its good but it also feels weirdly... ?empty, like i cant't quite put my finger on it but something is not quite right

This is now the 4th Bowie album I've been given. I think Bowie himself was a pretty awesome guy, but I just don't get the fuss, musically. That being said, this was my favorite one of his albums that has shown up so far. But it's unfortunately been a pretty low bar.

Just not my cup of tea. Don’t get me wrong insane instrumentals and vocals and overall very upbeat but just not my type of music. To me it wasn’t anything i would listen to ever again 4/10

Kinda jazzy in parts not overly impressed for David Bowie expectations. Hard to call a bowie album bad just not the bowie album for me. But vocals and guitar hit really nice on panic in Detroit and cracked actor. Keyboard and saxophone felt sexy on prettiest star! Highlights:Panic in detroit, cracked actor, prettiest star, Lowlights: Aladdin sane

50/50 on songs I liked and didn’t like. There was a giant poster of this album in my music class which I’d always stare at when zoning out. I kept fixating on that weird bit on his collarbone.

This was ok. 3 albums into Bowie and I’m not really into it yet, but we’ll see what comes next.

Aladdin Sane was once upon a time my favourite Bowie album. Nowadays, I think it wouldn't even crack top five. It's a nice continuation of the style of his previous albums, with an added touch of quirkiness, but the songwriting overall feels more indulgent and less rewarding than it was before. It's been a while since I listened to this album in its entirety and it was surprising to realize how little enjoyment I'm getting out of it now. Favourite track: Lady Grinning Soul

It's a jumbled mess of nothing particularly standout; most other artists this would be a 2 and more likely a 1. BUT, Bowie does just have a way with music.

Pretty good pop staples. I'm not the biggest Bowie fan to begin with and this didn't change my opinion on him, though. Fav tracks: Panic In Detroit, Watch That Man

first David Bowie album i listened from the beginning till end and while I acknowledge what a pioneer he is this album was just meh for me.

I haven’t really listened to David Bowie before. Cool, interesting, weird, dramatic - I liked it. Favorite was the eponymous

Some nice stuff. Some iffy stuff. That piano solo on the title track was fucking wild. 3.5

Skubal loose bodies in the elbow? Emotional Valdez meltdown? Fifteen guys on the IL?? PANIC IN HOCKEYTOWN

"Eh. I like David Bowie, not a huge fan, but the album didn't do a ton for me" - 4/20/2025 A year later and my feelings are the same. It's not a particularly special glam rock album, and where it has more diversity, I like Electric Warriors bluesy core far more. There's way too much Bowie on this list.

Pretty decent, revolutionary. Some rly hit but some miss

Solid Bowie.

Better David bowie

Cool, third Bowie. It's surprising how slowly this website is trickling out his albums given that he's the most well-represented artist on the list by a wide margin (those Beatles and Neil Young chumps had to rely on other band members in order to match his number of inclusions). Anyways, I know this album introduced one of Bowie's most famous stage personas and I'm pretty sure it was polarising with critics at the time of release, assuming I'm remembering things correctly. I know this album best for being on the cover of the 2016 revision of the 1001 Albums book. The back of the 2016 book actually has an alternate photo of this album cover where Bowie is looking directly at the camera with his eyes open. Quickly flicking through my scan of the book and being confronted with that image at the end honestly scared me a little when I first encountered it - I was never expecting to be jumpscared by Bowie. Anyways, as far as my expectations for this go, I'm anticipating a more stripped back album in comparison to my previous two outings (Heroes and Low). Perhaps a little avant-garde and warped given my impression of what the contemporary reaction from critics was. Here goes So, I'm finally dusting off this review, aye? It's been nearly three weeks since I rolled and listened to Aladdin Sane, though I kind of ducked out and spent my time assembling pre-written reviews for a while. I actually wrote a pre-written review of "The Next Day" before I got around to finishing my review of this album. Anyways, Aladdin Sane. It's not that bad now that I'm listening to it back on shuffle. I was put off by the simplistic compositions on my first listen, though I think it holds its own pretty competently now. The most prominent aspect of this album is the American influence, taking a page out of the piano rock and hard rock stylings that were popular at the time. This style is generally pulled off well. Bowie's guitars have that iconic buzz to them and are paired nicely with the many brass numbers of this album. The pianos are also quite adept, adding a fun, old-timey sound to the music and injecting a lot of kick into the instrumentals. Bowie's vocals are generally adept, though I still don't fully gel with his style. My only real gripe with this album is that its a little empty, being an album that would definitely benefit from a little variety in the instrumentation. This style of music also just doesn't resonate with me all that much. Still, on the whole this was a competent listen. Book time. Written during Bowie's American tour, with the album being his attempt at making it in America. A concept album about drug addiction which apparently serves as a continuation of the themes on Ziggy Stardust. "...a worthy - if more mercurial - follow-up [to Ziggy Stardust], thanks to [...] diversely addictive songs". The guitarist of this album is good. The producer of this album also produced Magical Mystery Tour and the White Album. The only fault with this album in the eyes of its curator is the cover of "Let's Spend the Night Together", which is a prelude to Bowie's poorly-received cover album. I don't know why I checked the book entry for this album, truth be told. The lightning bolt face paint is more or less synonymous with Bowie's image, so I like to think the music holds its own just as well. I cosign this inclusion.

there’s nothing wrong with this at all but it just didn’t capture me… i didn’t feel enthralled… too bad

First Listen; 3.5; I enjoyed this album. Felt like there was a lot of blues-influenced tracks and reminded me of the Rolling Stones. I also liked some of the experimental sounds and piano parts. Seemed to start slow but picks up after the first 2-3 songs. I also enjoyed it a lot more on the second listen. Like other Bowie, very glam and funky in parts. Favorite Track: Panic in Detroit

me gusto mas que el de ayer tipo3.5/5

This isn't one of Bowie's best in my opinion. It's predecessor is much better, though there are still some good songs here it isn't quite consistent enough. Top picks: Jean Genie, Cracked Actor, Lady Grinning Soul

Good stuff

I’m glad it’s been a few months between Bowies. There was a period where it seemed like I got an album of his every two days. Despite this, I still wasn’t enthralled. I’m not a Bowie fan. It was ok, but kinda made me yawn.

It’s certainly a decent album. There’s lots going on but no songs really grab you and say I am a hit.

I like the word play in the title, but that's about it. I understand David Bowie will always be extremely important and influential. I appreciate that. I just don't find anything that interesting to his music. It's not bad by any means. It's very good. Just not for me.

First two tracks are great. Slows down after that. Iconic Cover.

It’s a cool sound. Not entirely sure it’s for me though

Love some David Bowie. Not my favorite album, but regardless it's still solid.

honestly would be a 2 if it weren't for Jean Genie.

Uh it’s was enjoyable but wasn’t amazed. Stand-outs - The Prettiest Star - Lady Grinning Soul

I don't think I've actually heard any Aladdin Sane songs, but rest assured I know Bowie. I know dada. It's Bowie. Oh Sophie. I know it's basic but I'll always be a Ziggy girl at heart. This is cunt af though. I love Bowie. What is that man?? That's a great question. Watch that man, that's the important part. Ok Aladdin. I see you. Devious piano game. What is this charming beat. I'll love Aladdin sane. He's kinda just doing whatever. It's very Bowie. Like actually what is this guy on about. Why in Detroit. Who knows. Meg machine music. Favourite: Lady Grinning Soul Least favourite: Panic in Detroit

The difficulty of following up one of the greatest albums of all time. Bonus points for Drive In Saturday and Jean Genie, but minus points for borderline show tunes and a boogie woogie Stones cover. 3.5⭐️

Not the best David Bowie album out there.

First David Bowie I've ever heard. It was just kinda rock music. I was expecting something much harder to define. I wonder if this was early in his career. I was pleasantly surprised at the mood shift midway through, but it was too little too late. It's enough for me to look forward to more from DB though! - Poorly produced... guitars are too loud - Surprisingly, this sounds like any other rock music. Yawn - Well, the 2nd half was way more dynamic. If only the first half was more interesting

Muito meh

Por algum motivo não clicou este álbum. Acho que noutro dia qualquer teria dado mais

More interesting than his later stuff, but not as good as his better stuff. Similar sound but more sporadic and harder to latch on to

the 1st track was kind of repetitive but it had a good rock vibe the jazz stuff is unique, it is mid so far

Good, but some of the songs just drag.

Classic Bowie.

I quite like David Bowie however o feel that this album isn’t one of his best it’s an okay album but nothing special that I expect from him

тільки деякі заходять

It was fine. I've never cared for Bowie, I've never disliked him. I like some songs, I nothing most songs. Nothing here really caught my attention.

Quick note while listening, the piano on the title track started out good, then just turned into something so unpleasant to listen to, like a a kid got his hands on a piano for the first time and just started randomly smashing all the keys... Besides that, so far so good.

Good album, but it was just somewhat unremarkable, especially for Bowie's standards. Nothing really standing out here, but the quality is still pretty high. 3/5

The cocaine controls the singer way more than it should.

i had fun but i don't see myself revisiting this album often. the closing track, however.....i played it on loop for hours. one of his best songs.

Some good tunes but not his best work.

las primeras canciones no me han molado pero las últimas muy muy muy top

I definetly prefer other bowie albums. I knew a few songs from this one beforehand, and I liked it overall but just felt like it was lacking something. The chaotic background noises on a few songs also bothered me, but i will defeinetly come back to a couple of them.

Not Bowie's best - but even his misses are better than most hits...

It was alright.

2great songs

I got distracted reading the negative reviews of Nick Drake’s albums but I liked the piano on the title track. It could do with some more chromatism I think. The first half of Time gives me chills. Lady Grinning Soul has nice vocals. The prettiest star is nice but I think would be better as a more intricate (relatively) piano piece. Parts of this are very good. The more boogie-woogie pieces are merely entertaining at best. More generally piano and bass can really complement each other. It’s strange how everyone loves panic in Detroit. It’s definitely of its time. This is a good album. I will relisten. 3/5.

не знаю. не фанат такой музыки

i'm not sure i picked up on his mission with this one. Would I listen again: to try and understand Deserves to be on this list: nah, he's got way better projects 3.2

Not my fave Bowie but still a good time!

Have had a long time aversion to the Jean Genie and so was unsure about this album. Also read in the little intro that it’s perhaps better known for its cover image than any particular songs, which also tracks because I didn’t recognise any of them. Having said that, I loved Watch That Man and Panic in Detroit (why are these not better known?) and appreciated some of the interesting stylistic choices, even if the piano in Aladdin Sane made me feel like I was losing my mind. But I didn’t necessarily enjoy the rest that much

There are only a few songs on this album that have the quality of David Bowie's best work and the rest are a bit generic. I really enjoyed Time, The Prettiest Star, and Lady Grinning Soul.

A couple of hits but nothing special

💘 Panic in Detroit 💘 Time 💘 The Jean Genie

Loved it!

David Bowie is fun but this album was kinda bland in my opinion.Nothing crazy except that second track which was crazy in a weird way. 3/5

First album with Mike Garson on keys. He has huge discord solo in Aladdin sane song, an antiwar song.

good album, songs that are similar in instrumental to Argentine bands that I usually listen to, it has a particular sound, easy to recognize

Joyful, melodic and whit no fear to play with the sounds.

I'd listen to the best of Bowie a lot. Not sure how many from this album would be on it.

nunca he sido muy fanático del flaco Bowie, pero de que el hombre es talentoso, lo es. ojalá meterme las vainas que se metió este man mientras hacía este disco.

Raw and solid David Bowie to its core

3 - it was good but nothing special

I have never been a huge David Bowie fan. I've always liked a few of his songs, but have rarely listened to a full album. This album was OK, but I doubt I would listen to it again. Stand out songs were the obvious ones, "Panic in Detroit" and "The Jean Genie". Maybe I will listen to a few more Bowie albums to campare against this one.

así se siente estar en la falopa

Nice album some great song

Another good David Bowie album. It had been a few months since I had heard this for the first time and I enjoyed it more on this relisten, but Bowie isn't my favorite artist or anything and I think he may be someone I enjoy more for his top tracks and hits than all encompassing great album work.

I've never gotten into this album, even though I am a big Ziggy Stardust fan. I find this period of Bowie's career fairly hit and miss though. Off this, I liked the opening three songs, and The Jean Genie is obviously great, but the rest I can take or leave.

3.5 Stars I can't say I've ever really understood the appeal of David Bowie. The album is pretty good, but it's also not something I will come back to often nor did it make me want to take a trip through his discography.

i’m so sorry 😭

Meh, not a big bowie fan

outro david bowie mds FAVS (top 3): panic in detroit, cracked actor, time mençoes honrosas: drive-in saturday, lady grinning soul gente n sou mt fa dos albuns dele, acho q dos q ja ouvi daqui esse se pa é o melhor, eu curti de ouvir mais q os outros entao AMO! nota final: 3.5/5

chaotic. colorful. cray cray

This was pretty good. Though not what I expected; I thought Bowie would be um, weirder. I did like in the title track the part where he beat the hell out of out of the piano for like 2 minutes. That was cool.

Fun one! Not the biggest Bowie fan but I enjoyed this.

Genuinely what the fuck is that off key piano solo. It’s all like ok not great

I enjoyed a lot of this album but there were a few songs that didn’t do much for me. The Jean Genie is obviously the stand out track.

Would need to relisten to the first half, my gut reaction was I didn’t like that much but really liked the second half

Unlikely to want to listen to this again any time soon.

By a hair, maybe on reputation alone?

The follow-up album to Ziggy Stardust. Glam Rock. Maybe influential and important, but I don't like it as an album. Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: n/a Best Songs The Jean Genie

Bowie indulges the “rockier” side of art rock here, which, personally, is not my favorite side of Bowie. It’s not bad, just a little too straight-ahead rock and roll for my taste. Highlights include “Panic in Detroit” and the dissonant piano playing throughout the record.

Enjoyed it

I love Bowie, but I often find his full records can be a bit hit and miss. Some belters on here, but a few that just pass you by.

Not my fave Bowie but still has some great tunes

I’m so disappointed. This is NOT my David Bowie 3.1

Not my favourite Bowie album.

I loved it as a teenager. Some songs just hit different nowadays.

Solid 70s rock

Interesting they’re not particularly cohesive.

A pretty average David Bowie album that seems to lack a signature song.

The 4th of 8 David Bowie albums on this list and probably my least favorite so far, best part was the album art.

I liked the crazy piano

aladdin sane é uma tremenda música boa!! o resto do álbum caminha entre bom e ok. 3,5.

This deserves five stars for the iconic cover alone. But measured against Bowie's catalogue the music is a solid three.

Not my favorite Bowie by a long shot but still enjoyable. Standouts are for me the titletrack and "Time".

Solid funk

I enjoyed this album but it feels pretty dated to my taste in music. The theatrical approach to rock is pretty cool, but I prob wouldn’t add most of these songs to my playlist. Either way it was a good album and good first impression of David Bowie's music that intrigued me. Fav track is Lady Grinning Soul, least fav is Let’s Spend the Night Together.

I am glad that I've listened to it, but don't really want to listen to it again. Bowie is certainly unique, but this time it was just okay.

Eipä tästä sillee paljoa sanottavaa ole, punapää-bowien musakkia. Paitsi tuo levyn nimikkoraita. Ihan kaameaa. Muuten ei mitään tunteita nostattavaa.

David Bowie on aina kuulostanut David Bowielta. En oo koskaan oikein pitäny lauluäänestä paljoa koskaan, musiikissa on paljon hyviä juttuja, paljon hämärää.

Not bad! Sounds so much like Arctic Monkeys to me. I probably wouldn’t reach for this one, but extra style points for Bowie.
