Album 227 of 1001 David Bowie - Hunky Dory Rating : 5 / 5 Favorite Tracks: Changes / Life on Mars The 5th Bowie album out of my first 227. It was just yesterday, actually, that I wondered when I would get another. This is one of my favorites from Bowie. A solid album, throughout.
Bowie is awesome
Incredible album from top to bottom. An all-time great.
Sublime as always
Beautiful, dreamy music. Would be great in a movie soundtrack. New discovery: Oh! You Pretty Things
Timeless classic from one of the most gifted musicians.
Overall not my favorite album of his, but David Bowie is absolutely a personal favorite, and the song “Life on Mars?” is one of the greatest songs that’s ever existed.
5 stars
Strong album with Standouts in Changes, Oh You Pretty Things, Life On Mars, Quicksand, Song For Bob Dylan, Queen Bitch, and The Bewlay Brothers.
Love it!
The first classic Bowie. Changes, Life on Mars, and Queen Bitch are some of the best songs all time. And then you have subtle burners like Kooks and Quicksand. Its weird to think, but Bowie would never sound this pure or unvarnished again.
Yup annetaan se 5 tähteä tämä on todella hyvä albumi. Sitten menin katsomaan reviews osasto 4.06 avg. Kerrankin ylpeä. Bowie on albumilla bowie. Ihmiset rakastavat Bowie. Bowie on semmoinen johon ihastutaan hänen ei itse tarvitse tehdä paljoa palvonnan eteen, senkus paljuna roikkuu saunassa, kun saunojat kuolaavat.. (yhdysamerikkalaisille tiedoksi sauna ALASTON tilaisuus!) Mutta possu onkin elossa --- gay guy in female group kinda situaatio --- syy bowien ihailuun olemukseen.... Moni ei tajua bowie mindfuck manipulation god.. antaa 5 star 1984.. meikä respect the mindfuck... siitä täydet..
Whimsical
Bowie is a fine man. Rich and innovative album -- a true favourite of mine.
5 stars shut up
Amazing: embarrassing to say I haven't listened to this before and it was as good as the hype made it out to be. A strong guitar and rock presence but paired with the imagination of lyrics and structure Bowie brings this was smth else. Ofc you have his iconic tracks but this whole album could be held as amazing. Not many skips in it at all. Will definitely be coming back and listening to this a bunch more and praying I get more Bowie soon.
life on mars might be the best piano of all time. Rick wakeman of yes
Wish Bowie were still alive 😭
It’s Bowie. It deserves 5 stars for Life On Mars? alone. It makes me feel joyful
Great album, changes,oh you pretty things, life on mars,Andy worhol and queen bitch are all bangers.David Bowie was really amazing during the 70s.
One of his best!!
Great album
It’s Bowie being Bowie, what more can I say?
It was a great album, nothing wrong with it at all! Bowie's writing is amazing
Duh
This was a fun one. I've heard most of these songs before, but never together in the context of the full album. Loved it.
A classic. Listened on 10/7/23
Ho perso la review scritta prima
Very eye opening. Bowie was so far ahead of his time.
Oh I've listened to this many times. For a couple of kooks, even the filler tracks are great.
Loved this album when I saw him in Cleveland in 72. Never gets old. Unlike me.
5 punkte
ch-ch-ch-ch-changes great tracks: changes oh you pretty thing life on mars? kooks quicksand andy warhol song for bob dylan queen bitch great album, beginning-to-end listen
Classic Bowie with some lesser known bangers
Bowie didn't make a bad album. It's not at the top of the list of the better ones, but for me it's in the top 100 albums of 1001.
9/10
god damn I've listened to it and forgot how good it was
Again, this guy didn’t make a bad album. The last few tracks pulled this back to a 5
Sit back and enjoy
Amazing of course!
"If she says she can do it, she can do it - she don't make false claims" One of my favourite lines in rock music. Classic album from Bowie's prime. I love it
Bowie 4eva
Beautiful. This is prime Bowie.
One of the many legendary Bowie albums. Can you imagine living in the 70s and listening to this album for the first time? A mystical experience, for sure. Well, so many artists whose music has enriched our souls over the last 40 years probably went through that experience. Changes, Life on Mars, Andy Warhol are complete classics and are widely played even today. This is a total 5
It's David Bowie- I'm going to love it
Another great Bowie album. I'm not sure it beats "Station to Station" to being my (current) favourite but it was a great record with some real classics and a few tracks new to me that I enjoyed a lot. An amazing voice and brilliant instrumentation, making for just a wonderful experience. It was cool hearing the origin of that riff that I know from Master of Puppets, which happened to be an homage made by Burton and Hammett to Bowie, so that's nice. (Kooks. Such a silly word!) Favourite: Life on Mars?
Hunky Dory by David Bowie is a timeless and influential album that marks a pivotal point in his artistic journey. Released in 1971, it showcases Bowie's remarkable songwriting and eclectic musical influences. Tracks like "Life on Mars?" and "Changes" are enduring classics, displaying his ability to craft poignant and thought-provoking lyrics. The album's production is lush and diverse, incorporating elements of folk, glam rock, and art pop. Hunky Dory exemplifies Bowie's chameleon-like ability to reinvent himself and push musical boundaries. While every track may not be equally groundbreaking, the album remains a testament to his unmatched creativity and innovation, solidifying his status as an icon in the world of rock music.
Awesome album. Life On Mars is one of my favorite songs. Also Changes. And overall great songs all over. Gotta give it a 5.
Love it
Låter som musik i mina öron.
David Bowie is like a less talented Davis Bowen
I don't normally go back this far in Bowie's catalogue but I should because Hunky Dory is an excellent album. It's light, breezy, not too complicated even with the lyrics inviting you to get way too in depth about Crowley or whatever. I like the piano-driven Bowie, and of course everyone loves Life on Mars.
It's a god awful small affair To the girl with the mousy hair But her mummy is yelling no And her daddy has told her to go But her friend is nowhere to be seen Now she walks through her sunken dream To the seat with the clearest view And she's hooked to the silver screen But the film is a saddening bore For she's lived it ten times or more She could spit in the eyes of fools As they ask her to focus on Sailors fighting in the dance hall Oh man, look at those cavemen go It's the freakiest show Take a look at the lawman Beating up the wrong guy Oh man, wonder if he'll ever know He's in the best selling show Is there life on Mars? Amazing. There really arent any words which do justice to this album, its just outstanding and absolutely deserves to be on a list of the albums that everyone should hear. 5/5
The quintessential David Bowie. This is possibly my favourite album of his. The one from the Bamford family vaults, the original vinyl still languishing on a shelf and very much loved. I was four when my parents bought this so it became part of my musical upbringing. I sat reading the lyrics whilst they spun the vinyl and sang Kooks to me. Which they did for years afterwards. I still have a card somewhere from my father saying, thank you for “taking a chance on a couple of Kooks “. The song still makes me cry. But even more than that, each song is so well crafted and feels like it belongs here. It contributes to the whole. There is not one song that I don’t love.
Somehow, this album is not in my extensive David Bowie collection and it's a serious gap because this is fantastic. Bowie's songwriting on this album is exceptional, the production is interesting and spot-on, there's a breadth of style and subject matter — it's brilliant. There's a lot of Bowie on this 1001 list, but so far, no complaints from me!
This album rules, and it's such an intrinsic part of my music DNA and language, just omnipresent for so long. It's a perfect record. An absolute joy to see albums like this pop up when they do.
Bowie is my Nr.1 artist of all time wich means that I both love his music but also look very critically on it... That said Hunky Dory is not his best but it's in the top 5. Every songs is somewhat special and interesting. A truely great album 8.5/10 (5/5)
top 5 bowie
I guess giving me one of the highest-rated albums after one of the lowest-rated albums (Kid Rock, no less) was the generator’s way of apologizing to me. Also, interestingly, this is the first time I’ve had an album from an artist with a least 7 (in Bowie’s case, 9) and I feel like it’s about time. Anyway, Hunky Dory is a great album, with the great melodies and show-tuney atmosphere making it unique, especially in masterpieces like ‘Changes’ and ‘Life on Mars?’. What more can I say? It’s a ubiquitous classic, and a breath of fresh air after Kid Rock (I’m still mad about that album).
A casual Bowie fan may not know any song besides Changes but this is an album full of wonderful songs. He was 24 when he recorded this. How can someone be this good at that age? When I was 24 I was a complete dough head. Life on Mars is probably the second best known song. Was he referring to John or Vladimir when he said "Lennon's (or Lenin's) on sale again"? He took that one to the grave with him. There are other lyrical gems in this song such as ""see the mice in their million hordes". I think I saw a T-shirt that said that but that might have been a dream. Quicksand touches many buttons because of, among other things, the names mentioned and the overall darkness. It's a song that has so much depth and so many deep messages. I have the mental capacity to understand some of the lines like "Can't take my eyes from the great salvation of bullshit faith" but I have trouble figuring out most of this song. For example I have no idea what he's saying about Himmler and Churchill. Like the Lennon vs Lenin question, it's too late for him to explain but perhaps he will tell us all about it on the next Bardo. The album also has a lot of clever keyboard playing by Wakeman. His piano on Fill Your Hard and Quicksand really shows his prowess and he sticks to the piano on this album leaving the synths, meletrones, etc. for his Yes years. The freedom Bowie allows his pianists shows on Fill You Heart as Wakeman soars adding so much personality to that song. Bowie did the same with Mike Garson, generating the same result, on the title track to Aladdin Sane. Mick Ronson also shows his brilliance on songs like Eight Line Poems. Queen Bitch is the album's trans / crossdresser song which was a topic a lot of artists addressed around then. If I understand this one, Bowie is checking out Sister Flo, a trans woman, saying how swishy she looks and saying "I can do better than that". When touring his next album, Ziggy wearing a miniskirt proved he could look better than Flo.
This is possibly my favorite Bowie album. He throws a lot of different styles and moods at us. "Changes", the opener's title is fitting because the album is so full of them and it sums up his career to that point (and beyond). "Life on Mars" gets a lot of votes for Bowie’s best song ever and is one of many songs on the album that could only have only have been written by Bowie. "Kooks" is a hilarious tribute to his newborn son. Speaking of tributes, the Dylan and Warhol "tributes" didn't go over to well with their subjects. "Queen Bitch" sounds out of place, like it belongs on the album he'd be releasing the following year and the final cut, maybe my favourite, "The Bewlay Brothers" is cryptic and haunting. Bowie’s voice and lyricism are at their peak. I love the arrangements, Rick Wakeman's piano playing and the acoustic guitar. Hunky Dory is a snapshot in time, nothing like the album before or after it.
What more can be said about this, it the best bowie I've had (so far)
The first of many perfect albums by Bowie.
For my money, this is Bowie's best alongside Low. This is not his most innovative or excentric record, but he did manage to make one of the best glam rock album out there, filled with melodies that gets stuck in your head forever. It has the simplicity of just being fun to listen to but there's a dark twist that is implicit to those songs. I don't know, I just think this album is particularly exciting.
10/10 Filled with classics (changes, oh you pretty things, life on mars) but also beautiful gems (kooks, the bewlay brothers) that will keep me coming back to this.
This album is gay-rock-art-glam with hints that Bowie is a poetic alien. I think most people getting to know Bowie's work generally start at this phase of his career (although I started at Low thanks to NIN), and it's a good place to get to know his work. I've know Changes since I was a kid and later realized that it's quoted at the beginning of The Breakfast Club. Of all the songs, Life on Mars? gets me right in the feels - I have to catch my breath nearly every time I hear it. Oh! You Pretty Things, Kooks, Andy Warhol, and Queen Bitch are all fab. Great Bowie album.
One of David Bowie's finest albums. Elegantly crafted, wonderfully melodic songs, with a surprising softness and effortless charm. It’s simply arranged and surprisingly… I guess the word I'm looking for is quiet… compared to the oft-noisy and rock driven Man Who Sold the World that came before it. It's like Bowie took off the kabuki mask for a minute and we could really connect with him in a way that doesn't always happen. To that end, Bowie also took a less stylistic approach to his lyricism on this album that works so well. These are probably among the most straightforward and accessible lyrics he ever wrote and the album is so much better for it. "Queen Bitch" really doesn't belong on Hunky Dory in a lot of ways. It's on another track stylistically from the rest of it. That said, it's still my favorite song on the album and a top 5 Bowie song for me in general. I wouldn't remove it for anything. Fave Songs (All songs, from most to least favorite): Queen Bitch, Changes, Life on Mars?, The Bewlay Brothers, Quicksand, Oh! You Pretty Things, Eight Line Poem, Andy Warhol, Kooks, Song for Bob Dylan, Fill Your Heart
happy to discover "life on mars". what a jam, though idk what david wants to say here after just a first listen. a jam throughout!!! so very pop. honestly not great vocals in a number of songs but i am v entertained
Probably my second favorite Bowie Album. Definitely a continuation of Ziggy Stardust. Life on Mars is that standout imo
One of Bowie's best. Some absolute banger classics here - Life on Mars? and Oh, You Pretty Things particularly go hard. Bowie knows how to keep you captivated for a whole album's length, too - there wasn't a single point that felt like a slog to get through.
Epic album good from start to end
Another one of my personal favorites. I love the different era's of David Bowie, but on some of his early album there are a few tracks that don't really hang together - that isn't the case here. While the whole album has a "sound", each track is remarkably different and fun. Key tracks are "Changes" and "Life on Mars?", but I also love "Oh! You pretty things" and "Andy Warhol".
Now we are talking! This album marks of the arrival of Bowie in my book!
Really enjoyable Bowie album. Sounds a bit stripped back and folky (a lot of piano driven songs) but with that touch of Bowie quirkiness and flamboyance. One of my favourites.
Classic Bowie.
4.5/5
A total and complete classic! (I'm 10 albums in on this thing...and this is the first album that really belongs on the 1001 list)
So many classic Bowie songs here. And really no songs I disliked. So yeah. It's a great album.
Its taken me a long time, but the older I get the more I understand and enjoy Bowie. He truly is an artist and uses every tool at his disposal to create art. There probably won't be another one like him. This album sounds so much of its time yet somehow so futuristic. So good.
So I love his previous and next albums (The Man Who Sold the World and Ziggy Stardust), maybe my two purest favorites of his. I'm a rocker, what can I say? This was different. And I guess that's why so many people love it - because he did a total 180 from his first few albums and did it repeatedly for the next decade, and kept being a chameleon his whole career. Between the heavy doses of piano and a little bit of fun, Side one sounds like the Beatles and Elton John - not copies of it, but channeling that sound and doing his own thing. Changes is so prophetic for Bowie himself - a classic. Oh You Pretty Things reminds of When I'm Sixty-Four with the jangly but upbeat piano, though it starts by borrowing from the back half of A Day in the Life. It nicely segues into Eight Line Poem (a hidden beauty). Kooks also gives me that Beatles feel, a little circus pomp and whiz. Funny lyrics in advice for his son. Life on Mars? is another classic - a bit of early Bowie mixed with the soon to be Ziggy Bowie in its soaring style and space-y focus, but with an Elton feel given how piano-driven it is. Quicksand also feels like a bit of old Bowie - Space Oddity simplicity and bleakness. And for all those costume changes on Side One, Side Two is then a completely different animal itself and from track to track, with 4 out of 5 homages. I didn't care much for his one remake Fill Your Heart, other than noticing its fairly upbeat tempo. The next three all perfectly fit their inspiration. Andy Warhol is strange (but surprisingly decent). Song for Bob Dylan feels like a Dylan tune (mixed with some Skynyrd Tuesday's Gone) and its lyrics do the man justice, but putting a different spin on his legacy (pleading for his return). Queen Bitch is a perfect channeling of Lou Reed by Bowie. It sounds like a Velvet Underground song only better. It is my favorite track on the album and now one of my all-time favorite Bowie songs. The Belway Brothers feels like it should've been on Side One, or maybe it's meant to close Side Two in the same way as Quicksand - another bleak, stripped down tune. As I was listening to the album (repeatedly) I felt like I was going to land on a 4. But in writing up my comments I found myself admiring and respecting it even more.
One of Bowie's finest. What a masterpiece of songwriting.
The only weak point of this album for me is Eight Line Poem. Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things, Life on Mars, Warhol, Dylan and Queen Bitch have all been covered so extensively that from a legacy standpoint I'm not surprised to see this album make it, given the other albums we've seen. Hunky Dory is his first absolute hit parade of an record, being preceded only by Space Oddity and the Man Who Sold the World, which don't do much for me outside of their title tracks. This is where the magic sauce starts. It's no Ziggy or Let's Dance but it's his first truly accessible pop album that just feels good to listen to. At this point I'm throwing out the rule book on what "deserves" to be on this list or not and just ranking based on my personal degree of joy in experiencing what the list has for us on a daily basis. And on that level this is another fully satisfactory experience.
If I was going to limit myself to one Bowie release it would not be Hunky Dory. However, it is an awesome listen and may contain his best song (Life on Mars). Changes, Oh, You Pretty Things, Andy Warhol and Queen Bitch are right behind. He was in singer-songwriter mode, but also introduced pop and cabaret music into the equation. It all works. The various styles make it a bit of a jumble to listen to, but not to the point of distraction. His first truly great album.
Yeah I mean obviously this is amazing. I did not realise it was a bit of a flop first time round. People of 1971... You are fools. It has 50% 'Best Of' tracks and 50% the deep cuts that the cool kids like. It also has so much good variety from track to track, you just couldn't get bored. End to end brilliant.
For some reason I use to think this was a Bowie album from the second half of the 70’s. Pulling off the feat of reinventing himself during such a short space of time is incredible. It makes this early 70’s Bowie achievement all the more spectacular. It sounds like an album from an artist who is already a star. In his own mind, he probably was. The voice has a sorrowful lull that draws you in. There’s humour as well. But it’s the quality of the songs from a relatively unknown at the time that still stand up. Remarkable.
Excellent album, great production, life on mars is deep .
Amazing Bowie album, and the one he comes alive in.
What an album!!! I am not a Bowie fan but I love this album, it is him at his absolute best. I don’t listen to it a lot but when I find it again I have a “oh yeah” moment and I will then listen to it about 10 times on the trot. There isn’t a bad song on it, no fillers, just absolute class tracks that each stand on their own. And this was 1971!!! There are very few albums in the following 50 years that sound better or more genuine than this
I used to not like Bowie. Used to.
Such a beautiful album. Glad I had this excuse to listen to it again. Not a single miss on the entire album. Perfect from the start in lyrics, composition, instrumentation, and Bowie’s recognizable warm voice pulls it all together to deliver such a brilliant album. 5/5
Have always loved this album.
Mérité
PREFS : TOUT MOINS PREF : RIEN
Simply another excellent Bowie album.
David Bowie showing off his skills as one of the most versatile artists who ever lived. I needed to check if I was still listening to the same album a couple of times as the songs are often so different in style and substance. "I'm closer to the Golden Dawn Immersed in Crowley's uniform" This album is a fantastic treat for fans and non-fans alike.
I mean Life on Mars is on this.
changes is my favourite song ever
I love listening to early Bowie. It’s out there in a really interesting way.
I can really hear the influence that David Bowie had on Jack White in this album. And it does not sound like something made in 1971. It could be released today and still be just as great. Timeless album.
Hermoso. Tengo debilidad por Bowie.
My favourite Bowie has a sepia smile, sick piano melodies, and the drama of a thwarted teenage girl. This album is such a good drug.
Hunky dory!
Beautiful vocals and amazing lyrics, best Bowie album on the list so far
This is rather good isn't it? Actually stuff that, this borders on brilliance.
The balls on this guy. He just goes for it, stretching his vocal range and coming up with corny lyrics like, "ch-ch-changes!" The best way I know how to describe it is kittens singing pop songs. But I do love when that chorus comes in on "oh you pretty things"
One of Bowie's top 5 best, and the first truly great album in his discography. This is one of the Bowie albums I go back to the most often. It fits a lot of great songs into a short runtime. Nothing to complain about here.
Fantastic, mellow and playful. It's freakin' bowie!
⭐️Life on Mars?
Groovy
No need to say more about this magnificent album
The true start of an incredible run of albums for Bowie that runs not just through the 70's but up to and including Let's Dance. I also mark it as the official taking of the baton from The Beatles (the Fab 4 influence is strong with this one). It's challenging to claim which one of Bowie's albums is his best (most will just choose one that's their favorite). But most agree there are at least five of his albums in the running as his best. The fact that there are that many speaks to Bowie's legend. And however many albums are in the running, this one has to be included in the mix. I have no qualms stating this is my favorite Bowie album.
This could have been Life on Mars and a load of filler and I'd still give it 5 just for that extraordinary song. I didn't really get into Bowie until my middle ages and it's been an immense pleasure that I could go through his work and enjoy the changes and shifts in his songs. This is a musical opera and probably my favourite Bowie album.
David Bowie is an absolute genius. This whole album is a masterpiece front to back. Never gets old.
Just love this album
My personal favourite Bowie album, changes, life on Mars queen bitch some of his best songs. Beautiful album.
One of my favourite Bowie albums
a perfect album i love u bowie
His second best
This is one of my favourite Bowie albums. So many great songs. Quicksand may even be my favourite Bowie track. Now, let's remember the awesome Flight of the Conchords song. This is Bowie back to Bowie. I read you loud and clear man.
What a fantastic album - a genius songwriter at the peak of his powers. If someone asked me to distill Bowie into a single musical statement - this would be it.
One of the best albums that Bowie have made. I love this album. 10/10
Just amazing album. Listened to it dozens of times. Straight 5
Classic, Perhaps his best, certainly my favourite.
very cool
I've always thought that he sounds the most like Paul McCartney with his voice on this one, but where the pop gives way to more artistic experimentation is where that small similarity ends. This is an album that is between sounds and normally those fall short for me as they're albums from musicians searching for an identity. That's not the case on this masterpiece in which each track could have made an album that was otherwise filler. This one has no filler. It has a maturity and confidence in it's dabbling with a more pop sound while refusing to just pump out another record that sounds like everything else. It's a bridge from the pop of the 60s to the brown acid hangovers of the 70s. Every song seems to have left it's mark on something that has come since. I adore the forward vocals on the album, and the separation and clarity of the instruments in the mix. I could listen to this on repeat all day and be happy.
Holy shit. I've only listened to some of Bowie's most famous songs before this album and I have been missing out. From front to back, this album is emotional, beautiful, thoughtful, entertaining, fun to listen to, and unique. This is an album I will definitely be back to multiple times. I might've found a new favorite artist. Favorite Tracks: Changes, Life on Mars?, Quicksand, Andy Warhol, Song for Bob Dylan, pretty much the only track that didn't wow me immediately was Kooks.
Beh che dire
GREAT album. So many classics. The re-mastered tracks are so clear.
The heavy hitters keep coming this week. "Hunky Dory" is the fourth studio album from David Bowie which was primarily composed on a piano compared to his previous album "The Man Who Sold the World" which was composed via the guitar. Lots of interesting descriptions of this music and album, one of the best being, a fusion of British pop, orchestral works, art rock, folk and ballads leading to the start of glam. And, the beginning of Bowie's success and a blueprint for his future. The album actually did poorly commercially upon its initial release but that changed once 1972's "Ziggy....Mars" was released. A great album which featured besides Bowie, Mick Ronson (guitar), Trevor Bolder (bass), Mick Woodmansey (drummer) and Rick Wakemen contributed on piano. The first single and one of Bowie's most recognizable songs "Changes" starts Side One. The distinctive piano. The chorus. Melodic. Builds. Slows down. About aristic reinvention. Bowie has some very unsettling vocals on "Oh! You Pretty Things." It's piano driven. He mentions Aleister Crowley and Übermensch. I guess he talking about the occult and Nietzsche??? And, we eventually come to wonderful soaring ballad "Life on Mars." A string arrangement. Actually about the US and USSR's race to get to Mars. "Kooks" is a lighter song about the birth of his son Duncan. Love that trumpet. "Quicksand" is one the absolute album highlights for me. Trumpet. Sax. Multi-layers of guitars. Piano. About his lack of inspiration and how to access it. The second side has three tribute songs, ""Andy Warhol," "Song for Bob Dylan" and the best one "Queen Bitch" for Lou Reed. Just a killer guitar riff in "Queen Bitch." And how can you not like a lyric using "Bipperty Bopperty Hat." "The Belway Brothers" ends the album. A weird, eerie song. Cryptic lyrics which are muffled at times. Apparently about his schizophrenic brother and him. An interesting finish. "Hunky Dory" is a top three Bowie for me along with "Ziggy...Mars" and "Low." A must listen for all music fans.
I love it, you love it, enough said.
December 14, 2022 It’s been over a year since I’ve last heard this album :/ Too long a time HL: Changes Oh! You Pretty Things Life on Mars? Kooks Quicksand Queen Bitch
This is an amazing album, so strong all the way through. I kept finding myself realizing a specific song was in fact a standout when the chorus hit. Of course the hits are incredible and some of the all time greatest songs in my opinion but nearly every song on this album is great. I love Bowie and such a solid earlier album. 5/5. Standout Tracks: Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things, Eight Line Poem, Life On Mars?, Kooks, Quicksand, Andy Warhol, Queen Bitch
Classic Bowie starts with this album.
Great Bowie album Loved it
I first got into David Bowie (like many other artists, unfortunately) when he passed in 2016. I had only heard his radio airplay songs at the time. Needless to say I was astounded by his creative output and his ability to utterly shapeshift both physically and musically. Hunky Dory is almost a snapshot into what his career would be. The songs jump around quite a bit in theme and sound. I like to reserve exceptional ratings for albums that follow a cohesive path from start to finish. I don't think Hunky Dory does, but it's still getting a 5 from me. Aside from Eight Line Poem, and maybe Kooks (not saying these are bad songs), every song on this album are standouts. This was a joy the first time I heard it, and many times after, in 2016. It was great to come back to this again now and it goes without saying that it is still a joy to listen to.
Probably one of the easiest 5s I'll ever give. One of the most emphatic beginnings of an album. 'Life on Mars?' is the song that first got me into Bowie, still one of my favourites. Great songwriting, if a little odd in places.
Life on mars?
Goated
David Bowie est mon artiste préféré, et avec cet album il est facile de comprendre pourquoi. Sa voix unique, les textes poignants, mélodies emballantes… une réussite
This is probably my favorite Bowie record. Just an amazing collection of songs: inventive, clever, interesting, and catchy at the same time.
My second favorite Bowie record. The arrangement on Life on Mars sounds like a Beach Boys song. The words to Kooks are so sweet. Queen Bitch might be the crunchiest three-chord tune ever recorded. Songs 5/5. Performances 5/5. Recording 5/5.
Fantastic album. Haven't listened straight through maybe ever, but it was well worth it. Life on Mars is still one of my favorite Bowie songs.
Great album! One of his finest!
I think Bowie's use of diminished chords distinguishes him with a dramatic theatricality that's absolutely essential to his career. Favorite track: 'Oh! You Pretty Things' or 'Quicksand' Least favorite: 'Andy Warhol' or 'Song for Bob Dylan'
Changes is one of my all time favorite tracks, it's very nostalgic for me, probably the first Bowie song I recognized and being Bowie. Also love Queen Bitch and Life on Mars. The Dylan and Andy Warhol were a nice surprise also. Overall a wonderful album, easy 5.
The first of many S-tier albums from the legend.
Flawlessly conceptualized, written, and performed. Bowie's powers of oddball weirdness are growing, strengthening, blooming. He is transforming before our very eyes into the otherworldly being he was always meant to become. It's beautiful and exciting to see. He finally put all of the pieces together correctly and knows how to showcase the very best of himself to his audience. Fantastic record!
Love this album. Already loved it, and still love it. Bowie is a god. 5/5
A classic!!! I love it!!!
One of my favourite albums of all time, and one of the first I remember loving as a young child. Not so keen on DB's later stuff, but this is pure genius.
Xlassix
Absolute classic
A master at work.
A true classic of singing and song making. This is the first album to really show David Bowie would be a star and its arguably his best.
This was the first album I bought of Bowie's, that subsequently developed in to a life long love of his music. Nuff said. Any Bowie album in this list will be an automatic 5 star for me :)
realmente lo ame, me pegó demasiado fuerte y tiene canciones icónicas
Goat

A classic
Iconic banger after banger.
Olin unohtanut kuinka hyvä tää levy on! Aivan nautittava - sopivasti hittiä ja sopivasti taidetta! Näin sitä pitää 5/5
I’m a big fan of Bowie and this album is fantastic.
My favorite Bowie album. My favorite version is the Ryko reissue. Bombers may be my favorite Bowie song.
WOW
There is definitely a running theme of classic albums that I had never heard before, and this can be added to that list. I did used to own a Best Of David Bowie album, so the ones I recognised are likely from that. I’m excited to listen though because I love everything I’ve heard before! Songs I already knew: Changes, Oh You Pretty Things, Life On Mars Favourite after listening: Oh You Pretty Things, Queen Bitch Overall: 10/10 I have been giving out a lot of high scores recently, but that should not detract from the perfection of this album. The version I listened to was the 2015 remaster so I can’t comment on the original version, but this was bliss from front to end. Piano is heavily featured throughout this album and is all beautifully composed. His singing, as expected, is pristine throughout but it is the songwriting that really shines for me. Would most definitely recommend to anybody, whether they enjoy this genre or not.
Life on mars and queen bitch are timeless

Sublime 🥰 The first album I ever bought with my own money. Love it.
David Bowies voice is sick
p254. 1971. 5 stars. One of the great singer/songwriters on absolute top form. There is not a weak track on this. Exquisite musicianship and production. What's not to like?
Nice to revisit
quite pretty good yknow solid album
good
An incredible introduction into Bowie's catalog and can't wait to get more! Favourite Tracks: - Life on Mars? - Queen Bitch - Oh! You Pretty Things - Changes - Andy Warhol - The Bewlay Brothers - Quicksand Overall Grade: 5/5 (A / A-)
You shoulda been there the first time I realized that quote from the opening of 'The Breakfast Club' was from the song 'Changes'. Haha oh boy. What a day. But really, what a bunch of great songs - Changes, Oh!, You Pretty Things, Life on Mars?, Kooks, Quicksand, Fill Your Heart, Andy Warhol, Queen Bitch... there's plenty of good stuff to go around. This one doesn't meander or, at least if it does, it comes back with something interesting.
Absolutely no way I can be objective about this as the songs filled my childhood. Not that I was around then! Rather, my dad filled our lounge and front room with the sounds of Queen, Alice Cooper, the Rolling Stones, Frank Zappa - and David Bowie. So, each and every song on this album waltzes with fuzzy, fond memories of childhood. Consequently, Hunky Dory is more than simply music; it's the soundtrack to my formative years, my own movie score if you will. I had a very happy childhood. I have grown to appreciate, in different ways, almost everything my parents played (sorry dad - I draw the line at Peter Skellern) and as such I feel this in the very marrow of my bones. Five stars.
Maravilloso. Grandes tracks como Changes. Un lujo.
Great stuff. Some bowie bangers on there.
Loved album, adding to rotation
A classic. One of may favorite Bowie albums
This is another no brainer for me. I wore out my 8 track version of this in high school. Interesting stories with great instrumentals behind it. Will listen to again....
Love David Bowie
Bowie!
Wonderful. The first single I ever bought was Life on Mars. Queen Bitch is a staple of my kitchen guitar sessions.
what’s there not to like here favorite tracks: probably everything besides Kooks
Really good
"Changes" will always remind me of joyfully singing along with friends in a car in the 80s. I had never heard this wonderful album that contains it and it was a delight for me. I want to listen again and again and discover all the things I know I've missed. Wonderful!
I guess I have always thought of myself as a just-kinda-a Bowie fan. Had I heard this album earlier in my life, perhaps I have been much more of a fan. This is a gorgeous album.
For no very good reason, I've not listened to much David Bowie aside from the hits. That's a real shame. This is stellar.
If I have ever heard this album it was a very, very long time ago. It felt familiar to me. Of course “Changes” and “Life On Mars” are deeply embedded in my psyche, but there is much else on this album to love. How incredible to be able to look back across David Bowie’s entire, incredible career at this seminal album. Really amazing and it sounds as fresh as ever!
Classic and perfect
Life on Mars is one of the greatest songs of all time and Queen Bitch invented glam rock.
I just love David Bowie, 7 of his albums are 10/10 for me, in the same league of artists for me as Bob Dylan, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and the Grateful Dead. Just such a brilliant mind, I wish he was still around today. We miss you Ziggy.
Great album
Great album. I should listen to more old Bowie
Duh
Genius
<3 great album
EEEEEEEEEEE An obvious 5* for me, this album brings me so much joy! I was going to start listing favourites but my brain just ran through the entire tracklist lol Life on Mars is absolute perfection I'd forgotten how pretty Eight Line Poem is, the instrumentals are gorgeous INJECT THE ENERGY OF QUEEN BITCH INTO MY VEINS The Bewlay Brothers gives me chills every time I listen without fail, especially when the instrumental *expands* (you know what I mean)
This was FANTASTIC
SO. GOOD.
One of his best, what an enigmatic and delightful album
At last a 5 to add! For ages I used to think that this came after Ziggy. I brilliant collection of tracks that only Bowie could write. No duff tracks. (I don't mind Kooks at all) Classic. Its hard to pull a favourite. Life of Mars is eternal..FIVE.
Near perfect album While I disagree with his take on Bob Dylan, the whole rest of this album was fucking flawless
Hermoso Sublime Maravilloso
Classic Bowie
5/5 this album is fi-fi-fi-fi-fire! There’s sense of grief that is comforting throughout this entire album. Standouts: Changes 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Oh you pretty things (piano sounds fun) Life on mars🔥🔥 Quicksand🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Fill your heart (great juxtaposition to quicksand) 🔥 Andy warhol Queen Bitch 🔥🔥🔥 The new lay brothers 🔥🔥
A class album, just listen to it, practically perfect in every way
Always such a delight listening to Bowie. This album has some of the more well known songs so it was great to hear them in context. Faves: Changes, Oh! You Pretty Tings, Life On Mars?, Kooks.
Bowie at the height of his powers - a bunch of absolute bangers on this one. Fave track - I mean, "Life on Mars?" is absolutely iconic, and I can never not dig it. "Andy Warhol" really grabbed me on this listed through, too...
Just so good.
Bowie de vinilo.
Another gem of a classsic
Didn't think I was a big Bowie fan but enjoyed that album all the way through with several massive stand outs
Ce que j'aime de David Bowie c'est qu'il touche à plein de style musicaux et il a un soucis pour les mélodies. Ici on revient plus pop après The Man Who Sold The World.
One of the best
And so we arrive at last, at the first of many, many essential David Bowie albums. “Hunky Dory” is a fresh, eclectic gem, with some precursors of glam-Bowie and shape-shifting remnants of folk-Bowie. There’s a tendency to view it as an artist expanding his horizons while drawing ever closer to world-domination, but one of my favourite things about “Hunky Dory” is just how unfussy and homely it feels. It isn’t his all-out blockbuster (“Ziggy”), his most radical reinvention (“Station to Station”) or even his most fun offering (“Scary Monsters”… fight me). But “Hunky Dory” perfectly balances such high ambition with a self-assured, home-spun atmosphere. It’s a sitting-round the-fireplace album, a record just as suited to a low-key family gathering as at a house party (my kind of house party anyway). We get to hear Bowie making peace with cozy domesticity in the lolloping, heartwarming “Kooks”. He wears his influences on his sleeves and gushes over them in “Andy Warhol”, “Queen Bitch” (for The Velvet Underground) and “Song for Bob Dylan”. Even “Fill Your Heart”, sometimes dismissed as a lightweight cover, strikes the perfect twee-filled note with me. And all that praise is without even mentioning three career-defining works which made it onto the same album. “Changes”… wow. “Oh! You Pretty Things”… spectacular. “Life On Mars”… come on, man. The latter especially might be incredibly ambitious in arrangement, bombast and scope, but it still feels like it could have only been written by Bowie at this specific time in his life. Twenty-four years old, still figuring out his image, channelling the contemporaries he loved, on a course to the moon. And the soul of the whole set lies with “Quicksand”, bearing the line many fans repeated after his demise: “I’m not a prophet or a stone age man, just a mortal with potential of a superman, I’m living on…”
I was never a big Bowie fan growing up - I didn't dislike him, but didn't seek out his music to listen to. However, I've come to appreciate him more and more as I get older, so I was happy to give this album a close listen today. What a great album it is. For most great artists, I think they usually have a transition album where they start to come into their own. For the Beatles that album is Revolver for example. For David Bowie, I sense that this is his transition album. I'm not sure why, but I love that so many of the songs are about (or dedicated to) specific people. Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, and Bowie's newborn son. I think Queen Bitch could have easily been a Velvet Underground song - impressive that Bowie was able to effortlessly pick up on their style. Going in I was thinking 4 stars, but after listening again I'm going with 5 stars. Classic.
The first really Bowie-like Bowie album. Contains a few deadset classics (Life on Mars?, Oh You Pretty Things, Changes), plus a few second-string Bowie numbers (Queen Bitch, Andy Warhol). The Spiders from Mars band coming together (augmented by Rick Wakeman), with only occasional flexings of the rock monster that band would become. Thi sis the first real flexing of Bowie's full powers, and the beginning of his awesome run of albums through the 1970s. While this album may have moments of weakness, it is hard to separate this from the whole run of Bowie's output, as the real kick-off point, laying down many of the themes he would return to throughout his career (changes, chameleons, the apocalypse, identity).
Absolute genius
Classic Bowie
Love everything Bowie, this album was a great listen
Timeless timeless classic. The best album of the 70 I live done on this list. as part of this I tried to listen to it afresh. I was surprised how much was piano based compared to most of his oeuvre. Cover art 5/5
Top 3 Bowie album. Perfect. 10/10 1. Oh You Pretty Things 2. Changes 3. Life on Mars
Oh, you pretty thing!, is what I have to say every time I listen to this album. Eleven beautiful songs, all beautifully composed, covering a variety of interesting topics, from art itself to fatherhood. The best art pop album ever made, and one of several Bowie albums that belong to the lists of best records ever made. It has "Changes", "Life on Mars?" and "Queen Bitch", what more do you need?
Hi- Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things, Life on Mars?, Andy Warhol, Queen Bitch Amazing album, laid the groundwork for Ziggy Stardust, not a bad track in the bunch, it’s David Bowie
“Changes”, “Oh! You pretty thing”, and “Life on Mars”. David Bowie, loved the album!
Delightfully idiosyncratic
Great! Loved it! Keeping in rotation
loved this album
Changes, Life on Mars, Queen Bitch..... it's got bangers. And the rest of it is not that shabby either.
An absolute classic. So many bops here
Really good
Even the less good tracks are good and the good ones are great
Brilliant
Heard before and even listened it the other day. One of my favourite albums, Bowie's first truly great album.
An absolute banger of an entire album. It's pure art and it changed everything. I bow down to Bowie yet again this is a solid 5 stars.
Its a 5 star banger, love so many songs on here and so pleased to finally have a Bowie in the 1001 line up. Assume a lot of him albums will be!
Finally a Bowie! Definitely one of the best Bowie's at his peak. Apart from the obvious hits also has The Bewley Brothers, Kooks and Queen Bitch on it which are all excellent.
His fourth album? Even now, Bowie is extremely unique, both in sound and performance. Dramatic and attention grabbing. "Life on Mars" is undoubtable the most famous song here, and rightfully so but "Changes" makes for a great opener, with some of the themes repeated in subsequent songs. The lyrics "You've left us up to our necks in it" still feels true 50 years later... some things never change. Can't say anything terrible about this album now. I do remember the first time I tried to listen to this album was a struggle but it grew on me and is now one of my favourite frequents. I often have "Oh you pretty things" in my head. Very catchy as with many of the songs featured on this album. Also just love the play on words in the chorus. "Kooks" is very sweet but I also believe it to be the weakest link on this album, probably the only song I would consider skipping on a listen although I'm not a huge fan of "Fill Your Heart" either. "Quicksand" is a great inward perspective song with strange encouragement towards moving forward. "Warhol", "Song For Bob Dylan" and "Queen Bitch" are all tributes. The chorus in "SFBD" directly references songs by Velvet Underground, whose debut album uses a Warhol print on the cover. Another fun fact, Bowie played the part of Warhol in the 1996 movie based on the life of Jean-Michel Basquiat. "Queen Bitch" definitely deserves a mention by itself, definitely one of the most standout and memorable songs on Hunky Dory. "The Bewlay Brothers" rounds off the album nicely, slowing down the pace after the previous song, albeit the ending always unnerves me. Is it just coincidence that I received my first 1001 Bowie album on his birthday? (January 8th) Nice surprise either way.
pretty snazzy
I already love this album ♡ It's one of my favorites – among a handful of records from my dad's collection that I asked to keep. Sonically there's nothing like it. Delightfully self-contained yet expansive, "Hunky Dory" brings glory to the human race.
I already listen to and fucking love this album. One of the most listened to albums of 2021 for me.
Genius
That's some classic Bowie right there.
Definitely a classic. I enjoyed pretty much every song on this album besides the well-known hits. I actually pulled some songs for my personal Playlist from this one. Best one in a while.
It's David-frickin'-Bowie.
Sehr schön, harmonisch, gefällt mir sehr gut, kann ich bewusst hören oder auch im Hintergrund spielen lassen.
Absolutely superb album and some extremely memorable tracks
Great album through and through.
Classic. Nothing much else I could say, really. Every song on this record was phenomenal. Probably my favorite Bowie album.
Great album, changes, life on mars
One of my favorite albums ever. The songwriting is so impressive and also the vocal delivery is fantastic. Rick Wakeman also provides impressive piano play making the songs (Changes, Oh You Pretty Things and Live On Mars) some of the best Bowie has created.
classic
Life on Mars? and Changes brought in the 5 stars
Classic Bowie that should be in everyone's Bowie selection. Love the whole Album and Prized Vinyl in my Bowie collection. Added bonus of Rick Wakeman on piano for "Life On Mars". All tracks are favourites and made me want a girlfriend with a "Bippity Boppity Hat!"
And then it transitions to this gorgeous minimalist guitar descant over the top of simple piano. It really like, crescendo's and then realises you might need a small break and slowly builds back up.
I'd heard the hits, but no one told me how magical the rest of this album was. Easily now one of my all-time favorites. Bravo.
Magnificent! Bowie in his '70s pomp.
Piano heavy, like if Kooks was its own album
the greatest glam album ever made. changes is a perfect glimpse into bowie's mindset and an incredible album opener. life on mars? is one of bowie's true masterpieces; it's an absolutely perfect song and one of the best pieces of music to come out of the 70s. kooks is a cliche, but interesting song. from what I've heard there seems to be a lot of hate towards quicksand in the bowie fandom, but it's one of my favorites off this album and by him in general.
I will probably give all of Bowie's albums 5 and this is no exception. The man was a master
Look out my window, what do I see? a crack in the sky and hand reaching down to me. all the nightmares came today and it looks as though they're here to stay. Bowie is the artist, he did it well and he did it right from the beginning to the end. He had a way with words that really gets the emotion across to me. The music is great, its almost like they are impersonating and mocking the music of the time and doing it better than the ones taking it serious.
I love this album. I have it on vinyl.
One of Bowie’s best, this album is has so many cracking tunes, changes, kooks
Absolutely wonderful. This is all very good and then you have Life on Mars which is on another level to almost everything. Loved Mick Ronson's guitar on Andy Warhol as well.
Bowie de vinilo.
This album is essential. Changes, Queen Bitch, Life on Mars, I could go on and on. Bowie was a force! Oh Those Pretty Things is such a great song too. I love this album. I love Bowie, and I marvel at his genius.
Hunky Dory is not quite as accessible as Ziggy Stardust (which was recorded around the same time) but it's arguably as good, if not better. It's Bowie's coming out album, and the songs and themes on display here set the blueprint for the super-stardom that was to come.
Several on here I’ve never heard in addition to the super hits. Oh! you pretty things and Andy Warhol stand out and great songs new to me. It’s a 5
Look out, you rock and rollers. More melancholy than a lot of his other work, but still tempered with silliness. (Still fucking hate 'Kooks', though.)
The best bowie record after Low ;)
Aw, Changes is always just such a heart-warmer ❤️ Haven't really listened to Bowie albums before, and am gonna have to change that. This was pure delight, from start to finish. Fav new track: Fill Your Heart, I think (such pretty piano) but loads of candidates.
Competes with Ziggy Stardust for best Bowie album and therefore competes with every other album in existence for best album of all time. The album which launched Bowie not just as a great songwriter but a true artist, the poetry, musicality, taste and verve of this collection of songs is beautiful and unmatched.
Moments of genius, and some weird stuff.
Classical Bowie album from the 70s - timeless, nothing to add
I still remember first being introduced to this album by a friend, who left me a very badly produced cassette copy. I listened to it for years. I also remember being reintroduced to the album over another friend's hi-fi. I haven't left Hunky Dory since. As to the album itself, I often argue with myself as to whether it is Bowie's best. And my answer is that this deliberation is pointless; all I should be doing is enjoy the album. And enjoy it I do: while many of the albums featured here are full of fillers, or contain songs that all sound the same, Hunky Dory is an exercise in the exact opposite: a collection of unique songs that coalesce into an album. A great album that's been with me for years and years.
never have anything bad to say about David, a great album!
Awesome
A surprisingly strong album, given that this was much earlier Bowie. And better all around than some of the other stuff I've heard. While I love the experimental stuff on later records, this was just consistently strong songwriting, cohesive sounds, and great performances.
I enjoyed this album immensely, from start to finish. My fave songs are Changes, Oh You Pretty Things and Kooks. 5/5 stars.
Superb
Fuck, I listen to this album all the time. Every single song is great, with some absolute classics among the first few songs on the album. Grabs you from the first song and takes you on an incredibly journey. The only bad thing about it is that the album is over before you know it 5/5
Big fan of David Bowie over here. Life on Mars is just so good! Hadn't heard much of this album otherwise, I'm glad to have had a listen through!
78. Não tem água, não tem ar, mas tem muito amor para dar. MotA: Life on Mars? "Still don't know what I was waitin' for / and my time was runnin' wild"
This is most likely the best album of all time. Certainly top 3
Brilliant
Classic album. Huge leap in songwriting from his previous three albums featuring great melodies and driving instrumentation.
This album is amazing. I can see why it is considered the beginning of Bowie's artistic success. Favorite songs are "Changes," "Oh! You Pretty Things," "Life on Mars?," "Kooks," "Quicksand," "Song for Bob Dylan," and "The Bewlay Brothers." If I had to choose my least favorite song, I guess it would be "Eight Line Poem," but I still enjoy that track.
The first great Bowie album. First side is an absolute masterpiece. From the shocking "Changes" that marked his position as a leader than follower of trends. To the surreal nature of "Oh you pretty things" and "Life on Mars." To me, the two things that make Bowie stand out to the rest are his master utilization of the piano (where contemporaries rely on the guitar) and his clear expressionist voice, taking ideas or people of his life (e.g. Warhol, Dylan, his son) and giving them new life through emotional sound and songwriting.
Hi everyone, I'm Mark.
Good listen upbeat, fun
Love.
Šta reći na ovaj album? Definitivno IMHO je ovo njegov najbolji album bez premca, eventualno jako blizu može doći Low i The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. Album koji me uvijek podsjeća na lijepe trenutke, kadgod ga pustim i znači mi. Od toliko kvalitetnin i odličnih albuma gospodina Stardusta, eto ovaj mi je s vremenom isplivao na prvo mjesto. *ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-changes!!!!*
