Reviews (page 6 of 14)

Definitely a classic. I enjoyed pretty much every song on this album besides the well-known hits. I actually pulled some songs for my personal Playlist from this one. Best one in a while.

It's David-frickin'-Bowie.

Absolutely superb album and some extremely memorable tracks

Great album through and through.

Classic. Nothing much else I could say, really. Every song on this record was phenomenal. Probably my favorite Bowie album.

Great album, changes, life on mars

One of my favorite albums ever. The songwriting is so impressive and also the vocal delivery is fantastic. Rick Wakeman also provides impressive piano play making the songs (Changes, Oh You Pretty Things and Live On Mars) some of the best Bowie has created.

classic

Life on Mars? and Changes brought in the 5 stars

Classic Bowie that should be in everyone's Bowie selection. Love the whole Album and Prized Vinyl in my Bowie collection. Added bonus of Rick Wakeman on piano for "Life On Mars". All tracks are favourites and made me want a girlfriend with a "Bippity Boppity Hat!"

And then it transitions to this gorgeous minimalist guitar descant over the top of simple piano. It really like, crescendo's and then realises you might need a small break and slowly builds back up.

I'd heard the hits, but no one told me how magical the rest of this album was. Easily now one of my all-time favorites. Bravo.

Magnificent! Bowie in his '70s pomp.

Piano heavy, like if Kooks was its own album

the greatest glam album ever made. changes is a perfect glimpse into bowie's mindset and an incredible album opener. life on mars? is one of bowie's true masterpieces; it's an absolutely perfect song and one of the best pieces of music to come out of the 70s. kooks is a cliche, but interesting song. from what I've heard there seems to be a lot of hate towards quicksand in the bowie fandom, but it's one of my favorites off this album and by him in general.

I will probably give all of Bowie's albums 5 and this is no exception. The man was a master

Look out my window, what do I see? a crack in the sky and hand reaching down to me. all the nightmares came today and it looks as though they're here to stay. Bowie is the artist, he did it well and he did it right from the beginning to the end. He had a way with words that really gets the emotion across to me. The music is great, its almost like they are impersonating and mocking the music of the time and doing it better than the ones taking it serious.

I love this album. I have it on vinyl.

One of Bowie’s best, this album is has so many cracking tunes, changes, kooks

Absolutely wonderful. This is all very good and then you have Life on Mars which is on another level to almost everything. Loved Mick Ronson's guitar on Andy Warhol as well.

Bowie de vinilo.

This album is essential. Changes, Queen Bitch, Life on Mars, I could go on and on. Bowie was a force! Oh Those Pretty Things is such a great song too. I love this album. I love Bowie, and I marvel at his genius.

Hunky Dory is not quite as accessible as Ziggy Stardust (which was recorded around the same time) but it's arguably as good, if not better. It's Bowie's coming out album, and the songs and themes on display here set the blueprint for the super-stardom that was to come.

Several on here I’ve never heard in addition to the super hits. Oh! you pretty things and Andy Warhol stand out and great songs new to me. It’s a 5

Look out, you rock and rollers. More melancholy than a lot of his other work, but still tempered with silliness. (Still fucking hate 'Kooks', though.)

The best bowie record after Low ;)

Aw, Changes is always just such a heart-warmer ❤️ Haven't really listened to Bowie albums before, and am gonna have to change that. This was pure delight, from start to finish. Fav new track: Fill Your Heart, I think (such pretty piano) but loads of candidates.

Competes with Ziggy Stardust for best Bowie album and therefore competes with every other album in existence for best album of all time. The album which launched Bowie not just as a great songwriter but a true artist, the poetry, musicality, taste and verve of this collection of songs is beautiful and unmatched.

Moments of genius, and some weird stuff.

Classical Bowie album from the 70s - timeless, nothing to add

I still remember first being introduced to this album by a friend, who left me a very badly produced cassette copy. I listened to it for years. I also remember being reintroduced to the album over another friend's hi-fi. I haven't left Hunky Dory since. As to the album itself, I often argue with myself as to whether it is Bowie's best. And my answer is that this deliberation is pointless; all I should be doing is enjoy the album. And enjoy it I do: while many of the albums featured here are full of fillers, or contain songs that all sound the same, Hunky Dory is an exercise in the exact opposite: a collection of unique songs that coalesce into an album. A great album that's been with me for years and years.

never have anything bad to say about David, a great album!

Awesome

A surprisingly strong album, given that this was much earlier Bowie. And better all around than some of the other stuff I've heard. While I love the experimental stuff on later records, this was just consistently strong songwriting, cohesive sounds, and great performances.

I enjoyed this album immensely, from start to finish. My fave songs are Changes, Oh You Pretty Things and Kooks. 5/5 stars.

Superb

Fuck, I listen to this album all the time. Every single song is great, with some absolute classics among the first few songs on the album. Grabs you from the first song and takes you on an incredibly journey. The only bad thing about it is that the album is over before you know it 5/5

Big fan of David Bowie over here. Life on Mars is just so good! Hadn't heard much of this album otherwise, I'm glad to have had a listen through!

MotA: Life on Mars? "Still don't know what I was waitin' for / and my time was runnin' wild"

This is most likely the best album of all time. Certainly top 3

Brilliant

Classic album. Huge leap in songwriting from his previous three albums featuring great melodies and driving instrumentation.

This album is amazing. I can see why it is considered the beginning of Bowie's artistic success. Favorite songs are "Changes," "Oh! You Pretty Things," "Life on Mars?," "Kooks," "Quicksand," "Song for Bob Dylan," and "The Bewlay Brothers." If I had to choose my least favorite song, I guess it would be "Eight Line Poem," but I still enjoy that track.

The first great Bowie album. First side is an absolute masterpiece. From the shocking "Changes" that marked his position as a leader than follower of trends. To the surreal nature of "Oh you pretty things" and "Life on Mars." To me, the two things that make Bowie stand out to the rest are his master utilization of the piano (where contemporaries rely on the guitar) and his clear expressionist voice, taking ideas or people of his life (e.g. Warhol, Dylan, his son) and giving them new life through emotional sound and songwriting.

Hi everyone, I'm Mark.

Good listen upbeat, fun

Šta reći na ovaj album? Definitivno IMHO je ovo njegov najbolji album bez premca, eventualno jako blizu može doći Low i The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. *ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-changes!!!!*

A classic, with interesting and well crafted songs

Would it be sacrilegious to say I might like this record better than Ziggy Stardust? It's a little more free, somehow, but maybe less consistent, too. Favourite track: "Life on Mars"

Me parece maravilloso.

Please and thank you

Awesome. Some killer vibes here

Fantastic album. One of his best.

Was impressed, but I guess not super surprised at the consistency and production quality of this album. I think it is mainly comparing this to some of the other albums from the list so far. There are the main tracks I have heard before, but even towards the end of the album like Queen Bitch stood out

Some of the greatest songs ever recorded but the whole piece is ultimately let down by a couple of awful ones. It's David Bowie though so you have to forgive the experiments don't you?

One of the best albums of all time

Don't @ me

excellent david bowie. favorited

An undeniable classic. Always love listening to this.

Absolutely slaps start to finish. Andy Warhol is the best Bowie song ever written. Fight me if you disagree.

One of my favourite Bowie lps

fun listening

an oldie but a goodie. its amazing. Changes to Oh! You Pretty Things is a classic 1-2 punch. Life on Mars. Kooks. Andy Wahol. You cannot hide from the hits!

Great.

this is crazy, I was listening to this on the way to work this morning! perfect album, gets me choked up

All I have to say is Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things and Life on Mars. It doesn't get much better than this. Bowie is a genius, and this is one of his best.

Changes is a fantastic song. It's the platonic ideal of what an opening song should be on an album (The only one better is probably "Vicious" off of Lou Reed's Transformer, which Bowie produced a year later). It's full of charm and wit and transgression. It's Bowie on full charm, bombastic and triumphant. This album really could be Bowie's greatest hits for good reason. From the highs and majesty of "Life on Mars?" To the almost wailing, weird, mechanical "Andy Warhol" it is timeless. Like dream you never wish to wake from.

Ett mästerverk. En klassiker. En personlig favorit.

amazing album, one of Bowie's best. period.

cinco veces cinco

in his prime - top album

masterpiece. Enjoyed the obvious hits but one that stood out, lyrically, was Quicksand.

Life on Mars?

For a long time this was my favorite Bowie album until I got swept up into the mythology of the Berlin Trilogy. I will say though that this may be the most enjoyable Bowie album and the most light hearted. He's definitely vibing on some Velvet Underground here.

i always appreciate some Bowie

it's a five NEXT

An incredible album that speaks for the time it was made

who doesn't love to wrap themselves up in a nice Bowie album? Changes, life on Mars, what delight.

Side 1 is so good. Probably timeless songs. It does fall off on side 2 but still best Bowie album.

Chunky Tory: let the bodies pile high

Wow, some classic hits, but loved the other tracks, still a little wierd but with a more folk background it was less jarring. Loved it!!

Yes David yes

Goddamn, I love me some Bowie. This one's a treat from start to finish. Stuff like Changes, Life on Mars? Andy Warhol, and Song for Bob Dylan. Great album, would rec.

Aoife said it's good

Loved the little alien-sounding dudes in Bewlay Brothers. Why does David Bowie need to ask if there's Life On Mars.... like he doesn't already know

Not as dark or jazzy as Low yesterday, but still cool and weird in the ways that I like David Bowie to be.

Pretty great early Bowie, and from what I can tell, his first really good album. It still suffers from the over-theatrical and messy presentation of an album like 'Aladdin Sane'. But the actual batch of songs this time around is much stronger. The opener 'Changes' is one of his best songs, period. That chorus is both catchy and utterly baffling in just how weird and jittery it can feel. It's one of those songs that feels so subtly off, and I love it for that. 'Oh! You Pretty Things' is pretty funny because it takes about half the song for the real chorus to kick in - but I do really like the spacious piano playing on this one, and the album in general. 'Life On Mars?' is one of Bowie's most celebrated and iconic tracks, and for good reason: it's a dynamic, explosive rock opera with giant, sweeping strings and matching colourful, abstract imagery. Definitely not one of my personal favorites, but I can see why people would love it. 'Quicksand' feels more stripped back and organized when compared to everything else here, with just a nice and natural acoustic feel to the whole thing. There's something very uplifting about the string melody on this one, which is a stark contrast to these very pessimistic lyrics. 'Andy Warhol' also has a super tight, punchy acoustic guitar lead. I guess the song itself was supposed to capture Bowie's admiration for Warhol, but the whole thing feels like a backhanded compliment if anything. 'Queen Bitch' is pretty neat; it has an almost punk rock feel to it, and the vocal delivery is nothing short of Lou Reed worship. And 'The Bewlay Brothers' is a pretty fantastic closer. Just these lush and heavy, yet mysterious acoustic guitar chords, and what sounds like a high-pitched reversed guitar sample. I just really love the atmosphere of this song; it feels like a one-man trek through a vast, empty desert. Some pretty incredible moments here, and some not so incredible ones. Definitely, I'll always prefer the post-Eno Bowie albums to some of his earlier ones; they feel more focused. But still really enjoyed this one.

David Bowie again - but this time it might be different. “Hunky Dory” is a somewhat disjointed collection of different styles. But I’ve read that David Bowie began to become “Bowie” on “Hunky Dory,” and I actually have an idea of what that might mean. The approach is absolutely promising and combines catchy song passages with unusual structures. In any case, I’m now really looking forward to the follow-up album, “Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars.”

A solid pop song effort from Bowie that starts out strong then slows on the back end. However it finishes with one of his very underrated songs The Bewlay Brothers. Is There Life on Mars?

ch ch ch ch changessssssssssssssssssssss love this album and love u bowie. so good tracks vocals on point and the sounds this album makes are just magical. really liked it but some songs not as good as others... Andy Warhol is da goat.

Quite great

Not my favorite Bowie, I think his pop psychedelic schtick was refined and improved upon in just about every way with Ziggy Stardust, but this still has some really incredible tracks on it. Queen Bitch in particular really gets me rockin’

Original Bowie Changes Oh! You Pretty Things II Life on Mars? Kooks Fill Your Heart

I like Bowie but don’t really think of myself as a fan. I reflexively thought 5 when this came up, but it doesn’t quite hit me to warrant that. Some all-time classic songs, though.

Enjoyed this album quite a bit.

This is such a kind and beautiful album. While listening I felt a real sense of maturity and warmth running through the whole record. Bowie’s voice and presentation are excellent here, full of character and emotion. The instrumentals are fire. The arrangements feel rich and carefully built without ever becoming overcomplicated. What stands out most is the storytelling. Every song feels like it has something genuine to say, and the whole album flows with intelligence and heart. Hunky Dory is one of Bowie’s most complete and satisfying works. Mature, melodic and full of personality. A true classic.

its great except Andy Warhol

4/5 some standout tracks

Not bad. Changes is a solid song. I also liked the Bob Dylan song, despite not particularly caring for Bob Dylan himself. Felt like the album got stronger towards the end, but I'm more inclined to guitar-based music. Still enjoyable enough

I have honestly not been a huge fan of other Bowie albums but this one hits the spot for me.

One of his best, no doubt about that. Excellent album and not much, if any, filler so I enjoyed it as a whole album which is nice.

me recuerda a mi mamá jdosjfkfjf mamita te kiero

Or is it Honkie Dorie?

Feels like Bowie becoming Bowie. The lyrics just drip with angst and the piano-forward production makes the lyrics shine. Favorite tracks: 1. Changes 2. Oh! You Pretty Things 3. Fill Your Heart Big fan of the transition between Fill Your Heart and Andy Warhol.

I'll always have a soft spot for 70's British rock, so even though I haven't listened to a ton of Bowie, the overall sound is still pretty familiar. This felt like leafing through my parents' old photobooks — there's gold-tinged hue that settles over the whole album. A good album for a lazy Sunday morning. Eight Line Poem is such a treasure. Bowie's howling and the wailing guitar are nigh indistinguishable, and he just pours his heart onto the track. Might be my favorite track on the album. Changes and Life on Mars? are well-tread territory but this is the first time I really listened to the lyrics and I just gotta say #wow. Kooks really irritated me for some reason. It feels very out of place. I wish I had a better explanation than that. The songwriting is sincere and assured, but hearing all of the different styles he was trying out, I get the sense that Bowie was still settling into his musical identity here. God, Bowie has such a unique voice though. Not the most technically proficient singer, but the personality is just bursting at the seams. The player in me is a big fan of how piano-forward the instrumentation is on a lot of the songs at the front half of the album, especially on Oh! You Pretty Things and Fill Your Heart. The production feels really open and airy, and the flow of the album has a nice ramp up and down. Just like for Hard Day's Night, you can see the foundation being laid for later albums like Ziggy Stardust here. My true rating is a 3.5 but I'll round up to 4 here since there's no half stars. Favorites: - Changes (a bit overplayed but a banger) - Eight Line Poem - Life on Mars? (for my money, Bowie's best song) - Quicksand - Fill Your Heart - Song for Bob Dylan - Queen Bitch

Bowie’s voice reminds me of Bob Dylan, neither can sing. However, it does not obscure the obvious musical talent displayed in this album. Very strong start to the album with tracks 1-7 where several tracks has its own unique moment and instrument that jumps out. - The musical motif and the sax at the end in Changes - The (beat drop) when the drums and bass hit in Oh! You Pretty Things, - The slow opening and closing guitar solo in Eight Line Poem, - The orchestral instruments and whatever the flute sounding instrument is in Life on Mars. - The Piano & Sax in Fill Your Heart Great variety of instruments and uniqueness of tracks. Classical, Jazz, and Rock are all constant themes throughout the album. Goes 2 for 4 to end the album with the Warhol and Queen Bitch being my least favorite tracks. Overall an 8.5/10.

Beautiful and some of his all time best. I don't think it's without skips though, but very few feel accessory

Beautiful album. Life on mars!

The guy was a genius. Great album.

Very good Who knew I'd like Bowie so much

Really liked it! All of the tunes were very catchy despite still having depth. I appreciated the storytelling, general message of anti-preachiness. The song structure was also perfect. Everything I want from a pop album.

Really liked it more than expected. Solid 4

Not his best, but he has no bad albums

An amazing piece of work, but doesnt live up to some of his later stuff

fav tracks life on mars queen bitch the bewlay brothers least favourite fill your heart

I liked the more acoustic sound of this album. Bowie didn’t have to hide behind a character to make this album good.

Not at all what I expected

Not my favourite Bowie record but still solid, changes is generational.

I'd heard a lot of the songs before! I never knew they were David Bowie's. I liked it a lot.

I’ve never listened to a David Bowie album before. This album was more piano heavy than I would have expected. More like Elton John perhaps. But I really enjoyed it a lot.

David Bowie on David Bowie. Jotenki vaan vähän tylsän kuulonen tuotannoltaan. Rumpumiksaus jää ontoksi. Mukava kuunneltava kuitenkin, vähän ehkä turhan pitkästyttävä paikoitellen.

Seems like Bowie usually hits four stars for me. Fun one.

Better than other DB albums.

Brilliant work by the orchestra.

Classic, great singles only reason not a 5 is because later albums were so stellar

I love Bowie. This album tells a much bigger story in a childish perspective I give it a listen later but for now I just rate it 4/5 but maybe in the second listen it gets a perfect score who knows

Cool beans. Shows a lot of promise that delivered in so many ways throughout his entire career.

It's not as thematically strong as other Bowie albums, but does contain some of his best individual songs.

Bowie pretends to be a Beatle in much of this but no bad thing. Rick Wakeman’s piano emphasising this. The weakest tracks sit in the middle, Kooks and Quicksand not hitting as high for me. Changes is the standout track by a country mile.

1. Absolute classic, iconic chorus. Immense album opener. 2. Enjoyed too. Nice piano ballad with classic Bowie twist. Strong. 3. Nice wee song - didn't really pick up though. Felt like an interlude. 4. Another all time classic, great! Chorus will be stuck in head all day. 5. Cute little song, almost nursery rhymey. Enjoyed! 6. Enjoyed this song - quite explosive 7. Another cutsey love song, fan of it for sure. Not the stuff I'd usually listen to. 8. Wtf was he on when he made this! It's fun, similar to some Syd Barrett stuff. 9. Another fun wee song (sensing a theme here). Can see how songs like Starman came not long after this. 10. Enjoyed this one. Good delivery and fun guitar riff. Playful. 11. Banger. Love the lyrics and vocal delivery. Maybe my favourite apart from the big 2. Great closer. Overall a great album - first Bowie one I've listened to back to back. 8.0/10

Solid overall with some fantastic hits. Some of the songs didn't hit as much for me as like an album like Let's Dance's non-hits. Will put in the rotation.

Life on mars is so good. I'm usually very picky but this is a 10/10 song!! Amazing album

It's not Ziggy Stardust but I can see why it's alot of people's favourite Bowie record. Shivers down my spine during Life on Mars. The second half of the album struggles to live up to the hype of the first half. 4/5

Haven't heard this in a long time. Feels very folkish a lot like Bob Dylan.

Possibly Bowie at his most baroque and clownish yet still incredibly sincere. My favorites are Andy Warhol, Life on Mars?, and Oh! You Pretty Things. It’s kinda giving flamboyant grandpa.

Think I have to envelop myself a bit more into Bowie's world to understand the depth of his creativity. I enjoyed a lot of this record, but I don't know how much I'll return to this as a "project." Obviously, a lot of talent went into this, and he really knows what he's doing in creating a specific atmosphere surrounding an album! Favorites: Eight Line Poem, Life on Mars?, Andy Warhol, Queen Bitch

Mijn eerste Bowie plaat!

This early David Bowie album is  considered one of his best, most notably for its diversity. "British pop, orchestral works, art-rock, folk and ballads" that emerge to form glam rock". Like Changes. Oh! You Pretty Things,  Life on Mars?, Kooks, Andy Warhol, Queen Bitch. A few songs that I didn't like but overall a very good album.

I'm very familiar with Changes, Kooks, and Life On Mars?, yet I've listened to this whole album once. Relistening to it now has me feeling all of its bombastic bursts of energy after the cinematic build-ups. Overall, a very good album and I would absolutely listen to it again.

Another Bowie album where I knew singles, but not as familiar with the album. Unique and still sounds good decades later. Favorite tracks: Life On Mars, Changes, Queen Bitch

Like it was fun but like every once in a while I’d try to listen to what he was saying and I just went, bro what are you on about. And then Aladdin sane started playing and I grooved out for a bit.

7/10 Favorites: Life on Mars?, Quicksand, Queen Bitch

Widely touted as the best Bowie album, i think i agree. Queen Bitch is my favourite Bowie song as well, Ronsons driving guitars over whats basically a love letter to Lou Reed. Epic.

Frontloaded but great

Good, good, very good

Excellent, no notes

Strong album overall with some bops that push it into 4 territory.

Such high highs

bowie has such an insane knack for melody. i feel like his craft gets more refined later down the road but loved this

Need to listen more often actually

Brilliant album. The hits are hits for a reason, but every song is fantastic and the flow of the album is perfect which each song being similar, yet still completely different. Really enjoyed it. 4*

I honestly enjoy Bowie's later work more, but this was still an enjoyable listen and a great foray into his early experimental work. Always love Changes, and Kooks, Andy Warhol, and Queen Bitch were some of my other favorites.

Bowie at his Bowie-est. Life On Mars is an all time classic, and while it isn't all my favorite, a really solid album overall.

I don't think I've listened to a Bowie album all the way through before, I just know the (many) more popular songs. It was done well!

An album from Bowie in his series of incredibly consistent work and this shows it well. Well written, well performed and interesting the whole time. Changes and Life on Mars are classic songs. Nothing mind blowing here but very very good.

andy warhol

Bowie is always a good listen

Transitional album from one of the best to ever do it. Such an easy listen where he’s using his muses to transform folkish tunes into something more dynamic. Also Andy Warhol is and always will be one of my favorite Bowie songs.

Good album. There's a few skips, but Life on Mars? is one of his best songs.

Two incredible highlights in Changes and Life on Mars, but the rest of the album is a mixture of very solid glam rock and slightly more forgettable acoustic tracks.

Maybe it would reward another listen, but all I could think was thank god when I heard a song I recognised. I hadn't realised Metallica borrowed Bowie's riff for Andy Warhol in Master of Puppets, so that was a nice surprise that bumps it up to 4.

It was good, some big hits for sure. Not quite a 5.

This was a very decent album of Bowie

David Bowie I loved your work in Shrek 2

Favorites: Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things, and The Bewlay Brothers

I'd be lying if I said I'd enjoyed much of the offerings of Bowie on this list. Yet, Hunky Dory opened with Changes and was actually a pretty good listen. The Andy Warhol one was a bit weird, but overall this was an engaging listen. All the enjoyability without the absolute weirdness that I have struggled with, and not reliant on the singles. Nice one, 4 Stars.

This album is like bouncing around different groups of people at school, looking for the right group to call your friends. You steal aspects of each group as you hang out with them, acting like a jock, then a stoner, then a nerd. You’re beginning to question who you really are at this point.

Great album, though some stuff at the end let it down.

This was my first ever Bowie album and I really enjoyed it. This record reminded me a bit of John Lennon's work specifically from the White album, I think the voice of Bowie and some of the lyrics that he sings make me feel this but this is very much a David Bowie album so please do not be confused from my personal observation. What I loved about this record is how adventures the sound was and how most songs especially in the back half had differing but complementary flavors that kept me really engaged with the music. Although I do not think the album is perfect I really think this is one I will go back to a lot. Fav tracks: Changes, Oh! you pretty things, life on mars, kooks, Quicksand, Andy Warhol, and The Bewlay brothers

Bowie seldom disappoints

loved this !!! will be listening more !!

typically i'm against greatest hits collections, but david bowie has been an exception. first full listen to this album and it might be time to reassess and be a bowie album guy

First Listen: Not a first Listen, but its been a while! WE, yes WE, love the Shrek song. Maybe a bit of bassist bias, but I love the lines on this song - especially in the verses. The song manages to seamlessly transition between very different vibes. I love Bowie's performance here. The chorus in OYPT hits so hard. I love that the verses are kept spare to emphasize the soaring choruses. I dont understand why Bowie gets away with the way he sings for me. When he does it, its cool and and quirky, but when some fuckass 90s britpop band does it its dog dookie. LIFE ON MARS LIFE ON MARS LIFE ON MARS LIFE ON MARS LIFE ON MARS LIFE ON MARS I love how much of Bowie's writing, whether intentionally on Ziggy or more happenstance here, takes the viewpoint of an outsider/alien looking in. There's often a bit of distance between Bowie and the actions being described, accentuated by his wierd ass voice. Maybe that's why I give his voice a pass where I dont to his imitators. What's the point of remastering an album if the songs are still drastically different levels?? I had forgotten Quicksand, but this song is a gorgeous ballad. The point in which everything pulls back and Bowie sings the titular line is haunting. The two tribute tracks are both great songs, befitting their respective artists. Not sure if Bowie is celebrating them, or if this was the Not Like Us of the 70s. The final track is a nice closer, a little slower and moodier than the rest. The wierd ending to it is sick! OVERALL: This used to be my favourite Bowie album. I think that isn't true anymore, but I can see why this album could have been. The album is a tight 41 minutes, and is pretty consistent throughout. I do think the singles are the strongest moments on the record, but the last four songs do give them a run for their money. Bowie earns the alien title he had. His distant songwriting and utilization of odd descriptions for people and things, paired with his unconventional voice and use of science fiction and philosophical concepts, paints Bowie as an outsider in a lot of these songs. I think this is why he fully explored these concepts on later albums such as Ziggy or Station to Station. As someone who enjoys this framing a lot, I enjoy a lot of this album a lot. 8.5/10 T3: Is There Life On Mars, Changes, The Bewlay Brothers

One of my fave Bowie albums

Have gone off Bowie in later years but this is a very strong album.

His first masterpiece. "Changes" and "Life on Mars ?" are some of Bowie's best song. Even though the rest of the album is not as good as these 2, its still really good. G-g-g-g great album/5

It's all hunky dory. It's a calm state. You float just above the fray. Immune.

Never really listened to David Bowie in full, so really wasn’t sure what I was expecting, although it was listenable, I was expecting to be blown away massively by this but I wasn’t.

Some of the beat Bowie songs in Changes, Oh You Pretty Things, and of course Life on Mars? Some weaker tunes on the b side buy still great in the context of the full album.

Probably Bowie’s best, but the second half just not as good as the first

Regarded by many as Bowie's best but it's not my favourite.

You really can’t go wrong with a first track like that

Classic songs delivered with a lot of verve. Probably ripped off by most modern pop music.

Lo mismo que Young Americans

Bloop bleep bloop

Fascinating album!! A very complicated piece, felt like a lot going on. 4.25

I understand now why my mother love him so much. But weird.

I didn't know what to expect going into a classic Bowie album on a particularly rainy day. Contrary to my expectations, this turned into a magical journey that caught me from the first song to the last. The lyrics are poetic, and Bowie delivers on all fronts. This is a departure from his previous sound, but it's a stylistic choice that works wonderfully. Replacing the guitar-heavy approach with a more piano-driven sound creates breathing room that complements the introspective themes beautifully. Some songs, like "Andy Warhol" and "Song for Bob Dylan," pay homage to American culture. Others, such as "Life on Mars?", explore escapism and false promises. It is a great album that I will surely revisit in the future. My favorite songs are "Life on Mars?", "Fill Your Heart", and "Quicksand".

Best David Bowie album yet. Man knew how to make an album. Stand out all you pretty things.

Fun! Bowie is such a staple of 70’s music that I’m not sure there’s much left to be said. I would have preferred stronger vocal clarity and less of that speaking-style singing, but each song was so interesting that I didn’t mind.

Classic Bowie.

Changes and Life on Mars are all time greats. Bowie could have arguably the greatest compilation album of all time. I've yet to come across an album of his that is all bangers. The pattern is 2-3 greats and the rest is average. 3.5/5. Raising to 4.

An absolute classic. Just great

Lots of good music on here and some all-time great tracks. To be completely honest the only glaring flaw I see in the project is the disconnect between the best tracks and the rest of the album. Some tracks like “Changes” and “Life On Mars?” are so amazing that it makes the rest of the project look very weak in comparison.

This is one of my favorite Bowie albums. Changes, Life on Mars and Oh! You Pretty Things are among the best in his catalog, but there isn’t a bad song on the record.

I love Bowie. This album is so mellow yet so interesting, a really great listen

Velmi dober

Hunky Dory has always felt to me like Bowie finding his feet. He experimented with folk and "heavy" rock, and this is where he's transitioning into the Glam Rock icon he'll soon become. The highs on this album are something really special. The lows are borderline unlistenable.

First side has all the ones I like on it, second side is okay. There's better Bowie down the line, but it's still pretty good rather

This is nice to listen to. I don’t know it’s not as good as I remember whatever David Bowie I love this guy.

The album slowly grew on me rather than impressing me immediately. Its mix of beautiful melodies, theatrical atmosphere, and subtle emotional unease made it feel quietly fascinating throughout. Song for Bob Dylan stood out to me the most, and I was especially moved when I learned that it was partly an homage to Bob Dylan’s own tribute to Woody Guthrie.

4.4/5 Favorite Songs: Changes Eight Line Poem Life on Mars Songs for Bob Dylan Queen Bitch

Excellent Bowie album probably top three.

I was surprised by how much I liked this album. Strong 8.

Bowie always starts off his songs very weird and then is slowly morphs into something that’s actually entertaining to listen to.

my favorite bowie album and the first one i had on vinyl.

I’ve listened to 5/9 of the Bowie albums on this list and it’s amazing how each one has some of the best songs you’ve ever heard mixed in with some you never want to think about again.

Really enjoyed!

Enjoyed this one, the hits are great but I also liked some of the album tracks I hadn’t heard before. Lots of genius on the album in between a couple of WTF moments

It's Bowie! What do you even say?

Peak Bowie - a coherent collection that defines his style

Starts out with a classic from shrek, so many good ones on this album. So good, last song carried on a min too long though sorry david

Love it except for one or two songs

11 great, slightly-weird pop songs. You really don’t need much more than that.

I mean, what can I say? When I met my partner, this was her favourite album of all time. It's an astonishing achievement in songwriting. Musically, I think its weaker than Ziggy or Station to Station, but its lyrically dense as hell and contains three of the greatest songs of all time. I need more time with it, but I feel pretty confident in giving it what I have. Standout Tracks: Changes, Oh You Pretty Things, Life on Mars 4.4

Este tipo no baja el nivel

epic sauce dave

nostalgic bowie

8/10 album - favorite song - Oh! You Pretty Things! Bowie really is in his element on this one, with amazing lyrics and replayability that comes from his catchy hooks and unique sound.

I enjoyed it, not really my style of music but definitely something to put in the car during a road trip through the country. Queens bitch

Buen album, se siente rock pop british

I would say this Bowie is Hunky Dory!

Bangers!!! Legend for a reason

Bowie was an innovator. Changes.

A great album from the chameleon of pop.

great album, but some moments are kooky

Some really great songs on here, probably my favorite Bowie album we've had so far

I don't even love every song on this album, but I really love this album. 4.5

Said it once and I'll say it again. This project has made me realize how much I love David Bowie.

A nice pallet cleanser after the last album the app suggested. Some great tracks - true classics such as Changes, and Life on Mars.

I had heard this album before, and after listening I thought it was just okay. Listening to it again now, I like it a lot more than I remember. While I love the 'The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust..' album, it is nice to hear an album from Bowie that isn't entirely about spiders from Mars. There are a few weaker moments on the album, and maybe one too many tribute tracks. However that is made up for with the songs on here that are just fantastic, like 'Changes' and 'Life on Mars?'. Four Stars. (Favorite track: Life On Mars?.)

2026.04.30

I've a huge Bowie bias to be clear, but I'd struggle to see someone not enjoying this. It's so grand, so fun. The piano is beautiful, the guitars hit when they need to, just a brill album.

Goat total, gran álbum!

Hyped artist and album, but it is quite good.

Really good but not quite 5 stars for me. The highs are really high, but it loses some momentum in the middle

I forgot how many great songs are on this album, a classic like almost every song is great

Was suprised when i heard life on mars? ive heard it from licorice pizza the first song is also nice with the cha cha cha

Listened previously. Expectations: High - Verdict: Near Perfect - Utterly unique. I like The Man Who Sold the World but this is where Bowie really came into his own. Pop songwriting from somewhere completely alien. The first two tracks are perfect. Eight Line Poem is gorgeous. It just goes on and on with one brilliant song after another.

Classic David Bowie coming into stride.

So many classics on this album. Love the heavy piano direction.

great album

I am not a big fan of the 80s, 80s music or dance music. Yet, this was pretty fun. The lyrics were vicious and often undercut the peppiness of the music. Given my predilections, I enjoyed it more than I expected.

Listened to on my Apple AirPods Max. This is yet again an album I am not new to, but not super familiar with outside of "Changes" and "Queen Bitch", which I love listening to (and still do after this listen). Really sitting down with the album and letting it unfold was quite a nice experience, a pop-rock effort that has such inspired instrumentation--especially the piano and guitar throughout--and flows so elegantly between tracks. There is a jovial quality to the album, especially on songs like "Kooks" and "Fill Your Heart" that creates a fun atmosphere, and that's really the greatest quality of the album to me, the atmosphere. Although I can't pick out many tracks that I would go back to over and over (yet, at least), the album is so cohesive in a front-to-back play, with smooth transitions and fun excursions to keep things entertaining, like the spacey and experimental intro to "Andy Warhol" or the proto-punk of "Queen Bitch", which could be confused for a Sex Pistols track if it was a little rougher and faster. This album is just a great listen all around!

Such a solid start to an album. ‘Changes’ hitting all the right spots followed by a couple more solid tracks- then…. ‘life on Mars’ hits. A song that I perceive to be aimed at an unhappy lady who uses film to escape life. If the song was wrote today it would probably describe a woman using social media to escape her unhappy life! Following this is ‘Kooks’ ‘quicksand’ and ‘fill your heart’ 3 songs showcasing Bowles amazing voice in what feels like such a subtle way, I’m wanting to turn my headphones up more it feels so quiet but I realise I’m on the highest setting! Then the worst two tracks on the album follow before ‘Queen Bitch’ strikes. My favourite song on the album (controversial I know and on another day it could easily be another) Before you know it the album is over and I’m left wanting more which is always a good sign! Favourite song - Queen Bitch Worst song- Andy Warhol. Overall a very solid 9/10

It's a fun album, David Bowie won't ever really be my cup of tea. Still I would wish pop like this would make a return, it is creative, and tries to be its own thing.

ABSOLUTE PEAK

No private session used for Spotify. I have listened to this album a lot, not just because it's a great album but I try to figure out where it falls in the Bowie's albums. It's in the top five and let's leave it at that.

Good one, already knew some songs, strong start

10th Bowie album. I knew he changed his style but it’s impressive that he doesn’t feel over exposed in this list. Another artist that’s really grown on me through this.

This album is nice to listen to and has some interesting moments. You can hear the influence of the Beatles and the Singer-Songwriters of the late 60's. I thought the piano work definitely stood out. The lead track Changes is a timeless song which is truly unique. That set the bar pretty high... unfortunately, none of the other songs were able to reach those lofty heights.

It’s really good. BUT… … the second half does not hold up to the first. The first side is one of the best sides of any disc.

The last Bowie album before the full arrival of Ziggy, 𝘏𝘶𝘯𝘬𝘺 𝘋𝘰𝘳𝘺 feels like the sound of an artist on the verge of becoming something bigger. It’s more restrained than the records that followed, but the songwriting is already sharp and full of personality. Bowie moves easily between theatrical flair, introspection, and playful eccentricity, giving the album a lot of charm throughout. Maybe not quite as iconic as what came next, but it’s easy to hear the greatness taking shape.

You Pretty Things, Life on Mars? y Fill Your Heart.

This has some absolute classics. However, it's a very front loaded album. Changes is a classic, Oh you pretty things, Life on Mars are both brilliant. Eight line poem is fine, nothing special. Kooks is fun and cute. After Kooks, you have a meandering procession of pretty "meh" songs. Quicksand is very nothing. Fill your heart is pretty forgettable. Andy Warhol is alright, it's catchy but has very little meat on it's bones. Song for Bob Dylan is fine, it has some nice guitar work. Queen Bitch is very good late album highlight, like a proto version of glam rock. The Bewlay Brothers starts out promising but goes nowhere and ends in a really offputting theatrical way. A very good album with some dross. A transition point between folk 60s Bowie and 70s glam Bowie with some classics thrown in for good measure.

Hunky Dory used to be my favourite Bowie album, but nowadays I prefer Ziggy Stardust and Low. Great album anyway.

Meilleur album de Bowie ?

I have a crush on David Bowie. Sue me. I could listen to “Life On Mars?” a thousand times and never get sick of it.

listened to again still amazing

Lots of bangers on this album starting with the lead off “changes”. But my favorite is probably “Queen Bitch”. This also has “life on Mars” and “oh you pretty things” but there’s also a couple of duds so not quite a 5 but close!

Classic Bowie - mostly good with a couple of absolute greats

Not my favourite David Bowie's album but there's so many great songs on it that I keep coming back to it anyway.

life on mars la amo

Really good and classic Bowie

Funky piano and TRUMPET.

Changes Oh! You Pretty Things Life on Mars? Andy Warhol Queen Bitch

Lots of classics I didn't even realize were David Bowie

Pretty good

Good album, that drops off a bit at the end. Life on Mars is fantastic!

Probably the only album to have the EXACT same rating on this website as on RYM (3.99 as of this moment on both). I've previously underrated this album, but I have to admit that it's up there with his best work. 8/10

Really great, highlights for me are Changes, Life on Mars?, Queen Bitch, The Bewlay Brothers. There are very few low points. Strong 8/10

This is a very good album. I am not the absolute biggest Bowie fan but you cannot deny his genius. Obviously it helps having musicians like Mick Ronson, Rick Wakeman and Trevor Bolder play with you. I was torn between 4 and 5 but i think 4/5 is fair, it isn't a no skip album imo.
