Good old Bowie Music
Finally a Bowie album i know i like, which appears to a lit rarer than i thought before this process. Changes is a classic, overplayed yes, but that shouldn’t detract from what a great song it is. ‘Oh You Pretty Things’ continues the piano heavy good time feel. Yes ‘Eight Line Poem’ doesnt match the first two songs, but it’s not a bad song….and it does lead to ‘Life on Mars’ which would be a highlight of any album. Kooks is fun and inoffensive and generally enjoyable.
This has my favourite Bowie song on it (“Life On Mars”), so I knew I’d at least enjoy that. It turns out I enjoyed quite a lot more of it. Aside from the obvious tracks (“Changes”, for example), I enjoyed “Kooks” and spent far too long trying to remember where I knew the riff in “Andy Warhol” from (it’s from a Rachel from S Club 7 song), eventually getting it lodged in my head where it now remains. This is probably a 3.5* for me, but I enjoyed it more than the other Bowie albums I have a 3* score too.
I do not have a great hit rate with Bowie albums: so far there's been two 1*, one 2* and one 3* which has really shaken my confidence in the artists I thought I liked. This album involves Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things and Life On Mars however, so is already out of the 1* or 2* danger zone. I like this piano-heavy, poppier version of Bowie. Kooks is great, as is Andy Warhol. And it's funny! Plus, while I've never been the biggest Yes fan, whenever he turns up on other records I get why people think Rick Wakeman is great (the piano on this record is lovely). Even on an album which includes two singles that aren't just famous Bowie singles, they're some of the most popular songs in the western world, the album tracks are (pretty much) all really enjoyable. Plus it's tight run time means nothing sticks around too long to get annoying. Maybe I do like Bowie albums? 4/5
I like that it was quite Piano heavy. Quite catchy. I just didn't like the volume dynamics. It was a bit much.
Har jo denne på lp. Noen bangers her.
CHANGES: 4.5/5 OH! YOU PRETTY THINGS: 4/5 EIGHT LINE POEM: 3/5 LIFE ON MARS?: 5/5 KOOKS: I didn't realize how many of these songs I already know and like. 3.5/5 QUICKSAND: Another with interesting progression. 3.5/5 FILL YOUR HEART: Weird one. 4/5 ANDY WARHOL: 3.5/5 SONG FOR BOB DYLAN: 3/5 QUEEN BITCH: 1.5/5 was not into this one for the most part THE BEWLAY BROTHERS: 3.5/5 OVERALL: 4.5/5
Another classic, but weaker than both the album that comes before and after. But you can’t deny some of these songs are some of Bowie’s best
Nostalgic album full with more song I knew then I thought I would, optimistic young Bowie is always a pleasure to hear from you
Hunky Dory is one of David Bowie's many great albums. This album is filled with many amazing songs that fit together nicely and the listening experience is incredible beginning to end. 4.6/5
Great album. I think it dips in the second half, but damn this has some of his best songs on it.
This is some groovy Bowie.
Prefer first half of album
Some of the greatest songs of all time along with some forgotten/forgettable ones.
Bowie is a blind spot for me. This was a great listen. I’ve been missing out.
Really loved this! Classic songs and new songs to add to my rotation
I didn’t finish this album but I did get very close to finishing. Some songs on here I have heard before and do like them. David Bowie is a legend and his work is like art. I need a full listen however.
Super
pretty mellow and piano-heavy for the most part, but it's got a really warm vibe. the intro to "andy warhol" is mental—that acoustic bit completely blew me away. it’s not exactly my usual style, but it’s definitely a solid 4/5. perfect for a late night session.
Some great songs here! Classics and stuff i hadn’t heard. Even the ‘skips’ have something kind of genius about them honestly. Guy’s a legend
Is it even fair to rate this in relation to other, later Bowie records? It would help me if we could split up his body of work by singular persona or genrebreaking era as separate entities entirely. That way I wouldn't need to try comparing my more familiar favorites with this one, which I never really actively listened to before. This is nothing like, for example, Scary Monsters or Outside or Heathen, my regular jam. Hunky Dory is definitely less menacingly electronic and more folksy, as if George Harrison was loitering throughout the production. Anyway, this record is great on its own, or maybe his inimitable procession of follow up works were also pretty great on their own as well.
This is a classic, i found the second part a little bit flat, but on a whole it's a solid album
How the hell have I not listened to all the David Bowie albums by now? I thought I was done. I am not complaining. This is yet another David Bowie album that I really enjoyed listening to. I will refuse to state that I am becoming a fan of his, but I am finding his music more likable than I had expected going into this project. Changes Oh! You Pretty Things Life on Mars Kooks Queen Bitch
Life on mars and changes make a strong case for Hunky Dory. Its a classic Bowie album, a bit bad, a bit great, a bit happy-clappy, and all weird.
I had heard a lot of the material on this album before throughout life over the years, but I had never listened to it in its entirety. After doing so, I can say that this is very typical 70's Bowie, which is a great thing. It's got a hard rock edge, elements of glam, some experimental sounds, all the things Bowie is loved for. Not to mention, I argue that all of this is at least a few years ahead of its time. Another great example of Bowie being the musical pioneer that he was.
quirky king
Han kan nog bli något!
It was my first attempt at listening to Bowie, and truly I found the album quite immersive sonically. A well written masterpiece I'll definitely be sure to revisit
Day 249 on this challenge and I finally get a Bowie album! Obviously I know plenty of Bowie and there are a good number of familiar songs here but I haven’t listened to all his albums, one for this challenge to help put right. Forever ahead of his time, it’s easy to understand his influence without even listening to his albums but it’s also easy to hear the craft and quality on display by listening to an album in full. I’ll be back and might even upgrade to the maximum 5 stars.
Bowie makes some of the best weird music of all time. He somehow pairs crazy, out there themes with music that makes the songs seem like normal rock songs. Definitely another interesting album.
Fun, i really liked it! Sounded like an early Bowie. It kinda shows a clear path through Bowie evolution. In addition, some tracks held a little bit of distraction from the lyrics from only his voice, which, personally, sometimes bothers me. Still, the lyricism was varied and solid, and the band was really good! Eye-opening and a good intro to Bowie! Really cool, but had a few really good tracks. Changes and Life on Mars? Are two really good ones. 4/5.

Oh! You Pretty Things>> Amei a experiência.
Better than the other Bowie album I reviewed recently. A little bit less experimental and just good old fashioned bangers. 3.5 but more 3 than 4.
TOP 5 changes life on mars? queen bitch the bewlay brothers andy warhol
Really enjoyed, had never listened to a Bowie album fully through. Good reminder to listen to some more.
Classic
Good
Album Review 076 Hunky Dory by David Bowie (1971) Rating 4/5 Hunky Dory is the point where Bowie, consciously or otherwise, sets out the manifesto for the rest of his career in Changes. It’s also arguably one of the best-first-half’s on any album with Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things, and Life On Mars?. Those three tracks alone would be the highlight of anyone else’s career and are head and shoulder above anything else both on the album or recorded by most other artists in the early-‘70’s. However, this is so much filler here (e.g. Kooks, Fill Your Heart, Andy Warhol) it’s difficult to rate this as a truly great and consistently strong album.
First time listening to this album all the way through. Very much enjoyed this.
Pretty pleased with this one, overall. "Changes" is a classic, "Song for Bob Dylan" is catchy, "Life on Mars" is great, and "Queen Bitch" is wonderful. Good advice from "Fill Your Heart". So, a few bangers, a few great melodies, and a few ... just why? But can we be over Bowie now? ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Worth a listen just for Changes and Life on Mars. Fun little piano parts, especially in Fill Your Heart.
Pretty excellent
400/1089 - I liked Kooks. Reminds me of Paul McCartney's "granny tunes" in a way. Overall a pretty good album though I'm not a huge fan of Bowie's vocals a lot of the time. Cool! My rating is exactly the same as the global rating (at the time I wrote this review).
Super tolles Album // 'Life on Mars' ist mein Favorit, woah der kann Singen. Mochte 8/11 Songs
Love it
4.3 Very very impressive. First Bowie album I think I've loved. Side A is incredible, found a new love for tracks like Oh You Pretty Thing, which I've often ignored. Side B definitely weaker which drags the rating down. Only stand out track is Warhol, but even that involves getting over a wasted first minute. Last track actually a decent closer also tbf
Álbum incrível. David Bowie na sua era feminina
best bowie album i've gotten so far. definitely understand the hype.
Favorite Track: Life on Mars?
Hadn't listened to Hunky Dory in a long time, but returning to it reminded me of just how wonderful this record is. It might actually be my favourite of his early 70s records as it's just a perfect blend of art, pop and rock. You've got catchy hooks, weird little diversions, and the epic sweep of Life of Mars
Experimental and good
Second half is pretty good but pales in comparison to the first. But that’s because they’re some of the greatest songs ever written so oh well.
I really liked this. This has my favorite David Bowie on it - Life on Mars? I also knew Changes.
This is good! Some real gems. Bowie sings and writes with this supreme confidence. Like he's just this effortlessly cool dude gliding over the tracks with ease. Fav tracks: Changes. Life On Mars, Queen Bitch
Nice
3.5/5. Suprisingly good, not typically into this style of music but really enjoyed it, especially the piano/bass work. Hard to believe this album is 55 years old. Favourite track - The Bewlay Brothers
Fantastic record. Bowie has better
I like this project because it has got me to listen to artists I have heard lots about but never really dove into, besides singles and hits. This was a fun, strong album! The standout track for me was easily "Changes". Good energy lyrically and musically throughout the whole record. An easy 4/5 stars from me! I am excited to listen to more David Bowie later on.
great album. Already heard before (listened to every david bowie album) but still i enjoyee it a decent amount. The thing is, I've tried really hard to LOVE bowie, but idk its never much more than appreciating and thinking its good, never truly makes me feel something strong, other than "Heroes" that song is just amazing
When it comes to Bowie’s glam rock era, this is easily one of my favorite albums. He strikes a great balance here, making music that’s accessible to a wide audience while still keeping his experimental edge intact. “Changes,” one of his most iconic tracks, is a song I still enjoy hearing to this day. One standout detail is that this album features Rick Wakeman on piano and keyboards. Not long after, Wakeman became more focused on his work with Yes, and his collaborations with Bowie tapered off. Still, the two stayed on good terms, which adds a nice touch to their story.
love david
“Changes” and “Life on Mars” are essential, of course. And the rest of the album, though not quite on the level of those two songs, keeps your interest. So good.
i like it :)
everyone says that david bowie is one of the greats, but i hadn't really checked him out prior to listening to this album. of course, i knew one or two of his songs, but to actually sit down and listen with intention is different. after listening to this entire album, i can see why there is so much hype around him. i love how every song is unique in its own way yet still cohesive with the album; he has a distinct sound without creating the same song over and over again which i appreciate a lot. upon first listen, i liked almost every single song on the album. i really wish that this website had half star ratings because i think i'd give it a 4.5 / 5 star rating if i could, but 4 / 5 stars will have to do.
I love David Bowie
I love this record -- so many great moments! oh you pretty things, the smooth crunchy guitars, beautiful ethereal vocals and piano, the otherworldly exploration.
tough choice between 4 and 5, some great songs on here and great album, but a couple of clunkers makes it a 4.
The opening one two punch of Changes into Oh! You Pretty Things is truly something else. Then you throw in Life On Mars? and Queen Bitch and you've got some of Bowies best. That said this isn't the Bowie album I normally reach for but after playing through it today I think I might do so more. Not everything here works for me but the majority of it does I'd probably give this a 4.5 if I could and it might be a rating I come to change in the future. Playlist track: Oh! You Pretty Things.
Review - what a classic classic album. A lot of his best known early songs all here (Life On Mars?, Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things), but a lot of the deep cuts are gold too (Queen Bitch, Quicksand). One of the better ones on the list I imagine. Rating - 8.5/10 Need to listen? YES
Ch-ch-ch-changes
Only half the Bowie albums on here actually deserve it, but this is one of them.
This album is better than I expected. I am not really a big fan of Bowie. This album is really good though. I didn't dislike any songs on this album and it never really got boring. Altogether, really good.
Prototypical Bowie
le daría 4 estrellas porque no he estado muy atenta pero muy chulo la verdad, me he guardado muchas canciones.
Amazing album, this is the first Bowie album ive listened to all the way though and pretty much every song is great, even the not so great ones are still good songs I wouldn't skip. Definitely will play again, Well done Davy Lad!
As much music as I’ve consumed in my life, I have never listened to a Bowie album. Life on Mars? is the obvious standout, but each song is great. I was most surprised by the sense of humor he showed in several songs. Great album.
Oh David Bowie my love. Changes is and will always be that girl. Take me back to 2020. This one's for you Sophie. Bowie I miss you every day. This is deep. Life On Mars? I was unfamiliar with your game hello?? This is insane. What is gracing my ears right now. Oh David you're a genius. Holy shit. He's so funny and whimsical. Lowkey just hootin and hollerin I'm a big fan. Cunt a gem pure class. Not my favourite from him but still so good. Favourite: Life On Mars? Least favourite: Andy Warhol
Han är mysig den där Bowie
Guys I think I might like David Bowie Also I can definitely how influential he is because there will be a sound or a specific lyric and it makes me think of a lot of modern artists I like today. Like, "Oh there's Will Wood. That's Jack Stauber." It's a little more commercial than Low, but the songs were lovely. I especially liked Life On Mars?
I really like this version of Bowie. The later, more theatrical eras are great in their own right, but Hunky Dory feels more nascent and pure, like you’re hearing the ideas before they harden into personas. The songwriting is front and center here, and it holds up incredibly well. There’s a looseness and curiosity to the record that I find appealing. The piano-driven arrangements give the songs space to breathe, and the lyrics feel playful, smart, and occasionally strange without tipping into self-mythologizing. It sounds like an artist discovering what he’s capable of in real time, rather than announcing it from a mountaintop. What stands out most is how human this album feels. Even when Bowie is being clever or referential, there’s warmth underneath it. The songs invite you in rather than perform at you. That quality makes this one of the more immediately enjoyable Bowie records for me. This doesn’t replace the later classics, but it complements them beautifully. It’s Bowie at a moment of clarity and confidence before the full weight of reinvention takes over, and that makes it a record I’m genuinely happy to spend time with.
Took me a few tracks to properly get into it but once I did I liked it. However there was one track that had background noises that sounded too much like my front door and I thought someone was breaking in.
couple bangers i never really listen to his full albums. i was listening on spotify through my tv and when will saw song for bob dylan he was like omg when did bob die
Very nice. Some hits, some wonderful deep cuts, and a little filler. No complaints
Love Bowie but not always his full albums. This was a good one
I read that this is Bowie's first great album. It's a solid album and it's good to give it a spin once in a while.
Vynikajúci album, ale má aj lepšie, takže 4+
I've never really listened to a whole Bowie album, really enjoyed this
Strong 4
Oh, hear this David Robert Jones I wrote a review for you About a strange dead man called Bowie Два лютых бэнгера (Changes и Life on Mars?)
He moves in his own way... (c) Kooks
Great album. It was pretty weird and really solid throughout. I liked some lyrics more than others, but the tone of the songs was always really good.
Song ratings in no particular order: Oh! You pretty things- piano at the start is calming and sets a nice vibe. When he started singing I didn’t really like it, his voice is not nice with the piano. He saves it when he comes I with the “oh you pretty things.” I love the sudden change in musical texture, I especially like the clapping and background vocals. It has a bit of a nostalgic old time London vibe. Overall apart from the first verse I love it. 4/5 Queen bitch- I love the non-lexical vocals at the start. The guitars are great and then the drums is the cherry on top. My head couldn’t help but rock along to the rhythm. This song would be perfect on a road trip. 4/5 Changes- LOVE the instrumentals at the start. Has such a jazzy vibe. The chorus is so satisfying. I love how he says turn and face the strange and the ch ch of changes. The music has a nice flow. Sax at the end is so good. Piano and bass are also *chef’s kiss* 5/5 Eight line poem- instrumentals are great. I love the attitude the guitar is giving. Arrangement and production is great. I didn’t like the reverb at collision, it felt to long. I didn’t like the lyrics. 3/5 Song for bob Dylan- guitar at start is sexy. Love the drums. Keys are slaying. Feels like I’m listening in to a conversation. Is a chill song I could listen to in the background. 4/5 Life on Mars- from the start it sets a very unique and nostalgic vibe. The piano definitely feels space like. I felt the strings in my soul. Drums is so good. This song feels like I’m skipping on a big fluffy cloud. Feels very original. 5/5 Kooks- I love the intro. Has a nice and consistent vibe. Background vocals are good. Feels both chill and jazzy. I love how after he says “trumpet” there is a bit of trumpet played. Arrangement is nice. 5/5 The Bewlay Brothers- is a very quiet son at start. I love the crescendo. Guitar is very good. When it was good it was really good but at other times it was bad. Some cool and unique parts that I like. I was unsure how to feel at many parts. 3/5 Didn’t get around to finishing
I don't think I'm quite a 5 on this, but probably the best Bowie we've had so far for me. Changes kicks things off with a bang and soon we get to Life on Mars, which is right up there with my all-time favorites of his, and to follow it up with Kooks is just awesome (I'm sort of addicted to the chorus and the little trumpet part). I like the piano-led and more stripped down nature of a lot of the songs, and some nice vocal melodies throughout. This one is a winner.
No one sounds like he did. So good. Great album all the way through
Very enjoyable
Omg! Love Changes and the whole album such a vibe
Bowie never disappoints. It’s crazy how good and how different so many of his albums are. Love this one. Highlights: “Changes”, “Oh! You Pretty Things” and “Life on Mars”
Hunky Dory blends Bowie’s poetic lyricism with lush glam-rock melodies and orchestration to great effect.
Yeah I'll say it. I don't like Changes. The rest of the album is sick though, especially Life on Mars.
Good listen. I sadly like the hits and Quicksand a lot more than most of the rest of album, but it was good 7.1/10
Yeeesss😁
A classic, full stop.
Best songwriter ever I wish he could sing (4.5)
perfection, i wanted to listen Bowie for a long time, i enjoyed this one
Hunky Dory was the very first David Bowie album I ever heard, 54 years ago, and after more than half a century, my take on it hasn’t shifted at all. Side one is outstanding: packed with classics like “Changes,” “Oh! You Pretty Things,” “Life on Mars?,” “Kooks,” and “Quicksand”. It’s flawless in my book and easily earns a perfect 5/5. Side two, though? It doesn’t quite match that magic for me, more of a 3/5. Overall, I’d still give the full album a solid 4/5. Timeless stuff, even if the sides feel uneven to these old ears.
Anyway, fajne. Ja tam lubię, jak on się buja/ł.
Was nice! Some classics
It was pretty good. I knew the two big songs (Changes and Life on Mars) and they were still fantastic. The rest was pretty great too. Not quite Ziggy Stardust levels (the one Bowie album I actually do know, plus a couple of other songs) but if the rest of his stuff is this level of pretty good - and I imagine it is - I'm looking forward to it.
7.10
Remember that bbc show life on mars? Was class that. Might rewatch it
its good but im not the biggest bowie fan
Fun! Would listen to more by him
I’ve listened to this a bunch of times now, because I can’t decide exactly what to say about it. I like it, it had a couple song I know, and some very fun songs. I didn’t love every song, but some were very fun. “Queen Bitch” has a line that inspired the chorus of Mr. Brightside, and I discovered this on my own!
Prefer the mix on this album over Ziggy Stardust - I like the sharper sound. Minor gripe with "Andy Warhol" - I didn't mind the song but I really don't like when artists include random studio chatter etc., it just doesn't belong on an album from my perspective (maybe as a B-side or nowadays as part of an attached extras disk or something). Is it realistically something that your average listener wants to hear every time the song plays? That being said at least it's an amusing exchange - Wingardium Leviosaaaaaaah. Highlights: - "Life on Mars?", something about this song just feels really powerful. Not sure what it is exactly. Is good. - "Quicksand", like the instrumental choices, like the vocals. Just a very expressive song. - "Queen Bitch" I think I could quite happily listen to most of this album again. High 3/Low 4.
the good songs are REALLY GOOD, and the rest of them are fine. Thank you David Bowie!
Certified classic. Not my favorite Bowie album, but it's still a great one
A strong record containing classic bowie tracks but more importantly it's evident he found his voice and style on this record. A must listen for sure
Starts well but fades
Classic. Two big hits
Kind of like a cross between early 70s rock and show tunes. I do not like show tunes, but Bowie sells it pretty effectively. It deserves its status as his first classic album, though I think it’s just a taste of things to come. Best song: Oh! You Pretty Things
This was Bowie's first great record. Previous albums had the odd classic song here and there, but this is when his Legendary Album run began. The instrumentals are more acoustic than one might expect from Bowie, with acoustic guitars and piano being the main element. Lyrically it's a bit all over the place, as Bowie would only take on the conceptualist lane on the next album, while visually all the elements were already falling in place, for instance the androgyny very evident in the cover. Key tracks: Changes Oh! You Pretty Things Life on Mars? Kooks
Each song a surprise. David Bowie cementing his legacy. Now I see. Near perfect album.
good put preferred ziggy stardust
8/10 There's no doubting how good this is and how influential, but I don't love it. Something about Bowie - does it all feel a little too performative perhaps? - which just holds it back for me. But I enjoyed it.
My third Bowie on this list (I'm still flabbergasted that there's 9 of them on here.) Prefer this one over Ziggy Stardust. Much more stripped down but I dig the melodies. Only song I really don't like is The Bewlay Brothers. Highlights: Oh! You Pretty Things, Life on Mars?, Queen Bitch
Can’t say I really get it but I had a lot of fun trying to.
Although I’ve heard and enjoyed some of his work, I’ve never been a huge Bowie fan, and this is the first time I’ve really listened to one of his albums. I have to say, I’m surprised by how much I liked it. He has a way of bringing songs to life that honestly no other artist does, and this album is absolutely full of personality. The production isn’t particularly fresh or crisp, but it has a special quality, and is fairly impressive for the era of this album. There’s plenty of interesting instrumental choices in this album, and the lyrics always seem to intrigue me. Plus the Andy Warhol song is pretty funny.
conhecia 2 músicas já achei bem legal, mesmo
This album rips
This was such a fun and light album to listen to!!!
píanó
Good piano parts in the first few songs. First two songs definitely better than the rest, not just a huge fan of his voice.
pretty great I love david bowie popular songs from this album are popular for a reason 4.5 stars 8.5/10
This is without a doubt the style of Bowie I enjoy the most. Just weird enough, and still very pleasant to listen through. Best Track: Changes
176 Hola David, amigo. Altas expectativas. Sorry?
This is pure 70s David Bowie. Moody, pensive and manic at times. Classic songs.
I need a few more listens to latch on but it’s good stuff
Good album enjoyed it allot more than I thought I would. Wouldn’t say I was ever a massive fan of David Bowie however this could change things !
Great album. 4 stars.
Knew more songs than I would have thought, great walking music
I liked this album better than Heroes. A couple of the tracks reminded me of some of the quirkier Beatles tracks and I really liked that.
“And these children that you spit on As they try to change their worlds Are immune to your consultations They're quite aware of what they're going through” What a brilliant lyric. I’m now at an age where I’m considered young by many and old by some, and I feel like I’ve been on both sides of this lyric. The album where Bowie became Bowie, one of the greatest artists in all of pop, someone who never seemed to write for anyone except himself. His experimenting with gender feels truly progressive, and it’s full of great songs to boot!

Lots of Bowie on this list, doesn't always click with me. This one certainly does. Changes is a great opener, Life on Mars is cool, I also loved Quicksand, Song for Bob Dylan, Queen Bitch and the Bewlay Brothers. Instrumentation was great throughout and Bowie is a master performer. 4.5* for me, rounded down.
One of those albums everyone should listen to as part of their music education – but not one I keep coming back to. Life on Mars is a masterpiece. Other standout tracks: Oh! You Pretty Things, Kooks
Not my favorite Bowie, but still great
really good, can't promise i'll listen again. top songs changes oh you pretty things fill your heart
Bowie on the cusp of being "Bowie" excellent back to front, good sign of things to come.
This album feels like riding a motorcycle in a rainy morning cruising through cars and worrying if you’d slip but you won’t you’re just worried and you need to hurry because you’re late for work but when you arrive you find that everything is alright and your heart now is filled with joy
Bowie had such a distinct style in his music. He isn't exactly an amazing vocalist, but he took what he had and tore up with it. Particularly loved the performances on "Changes" and "Life on Mars."
Getting there David
très bon album, incontournable qui va très bien avec l'ambiance des fêtes et me rappelle the perks of being a wallflower.
Great person, I didn't really like his singing style, but I love his songs meanings, and I really liked some of the songs. I don't know why, but for me, I liked "Andy Warhol" the best. Legend person.
Never was a big Bowie fan but this was solid.
85/100
I rate it a 8/10 there was only a few songs I didn’t like but overall I like it
Very chill album I love David Bowie Favourite song is the song for Bob dylan
Very Good Bpwie album, one of his best but it's not quite as good as something like The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust
Some stone cold classics but I find it weak in certain places. Certainly not a bad effort though and was a sign of what to expect from him in his next few albums.
This is a good album. I already knew ‘Life on Mars.’ I ended up adding: ‘Changes,’ ‘Eight Line Poem,’ and ‘Quicksand’ to my playlists.
love bowie
A great album from an artist I love that I have ashamedly never listened to all the way through. I got to find some deeper cut favorites that I didn't know I loved and they're surrounded by great hits like "Changes" and "Life On Mars?"
Classic Bowie what a great album. Most of the songs are awesome but some don't quite match my ear such as Andy Warhol
Good album honestly, interesting and fun listen. Did take away a track, now curious to hear more from him.
good stuff. not his best one, but very enjoyable.
Love David Bowie's music. Great first alblum but not his best. But still a 4. Great listen. Changes is one of my favorite songs.
Pretty good! I liked a good chunk of this, particularly in the beginning but some stuff later too (Andy Warhol is funny, Bewlay Brothers is good, and several others are still enjoyable listens)
Going to do something I don't usually do and rate this slightly higher than I think it deserves as an album on the strength of the singles. It definitely slackens in the middle, but his command of the piano is amazing throughout.
Nice album, only really heard "Changes" before. Obviously, Bowie is an icon but other than the first song, nothing really stood out.
Virkelig godt!
I actually listened to Hunky Dory right before I started my 1001 Albums Generator project and quite liked it. I've yet to listen to everything by Bowie, but from all of the albums that I've listened to, I think Hunky Dory might actually be my favourite one. Not sure if I would say that everything on it is great, but rather everything is good with individual standouts like Changes or Life on Mars.
An interesting listen. Definitely not my preferred genre, but I see why Bowie is held in such high regard.
Timeless
Tracks 1 -4: Damn David Bowie had the sauce Track 5: 60s pop slop :(
This is such a good album!!! Probably one of Bowie's best!
Andy Warhol :)
Best Bowie so far, I LOVE Life on Mars
Some songs are great, but not all of them are my cup of coffee.
was a good listen but got distracted
I was gonna say this feels like a space themed Bob Dylan album, but then i heard Andy Warhol and that kinda broke that immersion. Anyways this is another bunch of songs form David, they're really hopeful and gleeful. 8/10
Potentially my favorite of Bowie's albums. Not quite as "dancy" as Young Americans, but more of a rock vibe. I proffer again that Bowie is not a great singer (in that I don't think he has a great voice), but he is a phenomenal artist and musician. Has great instincts for when and where to be different.
It’s Bowie!
Actually enjoyed it. Changes is a little too cliche from its overuse in movies and stuff, but the album is fun, musical, and cohesive. Would listen again.
Big enjoy
Although Life on Mars is my favorite song on the album, I prefer my Bowie with guitar rather than piano. Give me the main acoustic riff from Andy Warhol or the electrics on Queen Bitch any day
Look out, you rock'n'rollers
This is the third Bowie album I’ve listened to so far, and I’m really loving his stuff. This album’s a near 5, but I just wish it wasn’t so front heavy and it kept the momentum going all the way through. Otherwise, it’s still a very solid album, and I’m excited to listen to more from him.
Brilliant. Under rated album of Bowie’s, especially by myself. Greatly enjoyed. 9/10
Bowie’s gets one step closer to making a masterpiece. Favs: Changes Oh! You Pretty Things Life On Mars Queen Bitch Least Favs: Kooks
Hieno levy 👌🏼
Fun glam rock/pop album that sees Bowie coming into his own. The first half is stellar with arguably his best song ever "Life on Mars". The 2nd half falls off a bit but there are still good tracks like "Queen Bitch". It really shows where he is headed after this album, like he's in labor with Ziggy Stardust.
Not my favourite Bowie album but very consistent and a classic. Andy Warhol is one of my favs
4.5 - Good Stuff. Plenty I knew. Some Vaudeville piano songs.
A great sample of classic rock, but a bit out there conceptually
An excellent, enjoyable album.
Changes is an all-time great. God, I love Bowie.
"So I turned myself to face me But I've never caught a glimpse..." Love how piano-forward this album is. *Eight-line poem
I may regret only giving this four stars. My mum's favourite Bowie album, and it is of course brilliant. No weak tracks - just on the whole it doesn't carry the same weight as The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Station to Station, or some of his later stuff. This album is a little lighter and more whimsical in the lyrics, which I do like a lot. I enjoy every song, but at no point did I really go WOW, like I do with a lot of his other work. I think part of it may be due to the fact that most songs are sort of ballads. Who knows. Very good, but not his best.
I am not sure how overall these years I’ve criminally underrated David Bowie. This is an outstanding album. Definitely worth your time.
Not my favorite Bowie album but still beast.
Quite the experimental album but I guess that is what Bowie was all about.
So good I listened to it twice. It's "vintage Bowie" but it's got some super familiar classic tracks interspersed with some decent less known material that holds it all together rather well.
So excited to have a David Bowie album! The only song I knew beforehand was Changes. It’s the first song and it’s also the song I listened to on the way to my new job! :) It wasn’t my favorite David Bowie album, but I still liked it. It was a little slow and I needed faster tunes for the morning. Best Songs: Changes (duh) Oh! You Pretty Things Life on Mars? (Have you ever noticed David Bowie’s best songs are about space?) Worst Songs: Andy Warhol
Solid stuff
I still don't care for David Bowie but this earlier album was better than his later ones, IMO.
Very interesting and ahead of it's time I would say. Better than I expected fs.
Who knew Post Pop began in '71? With Ronson more background and Wakeman's piano to the fore this is a real mix of styles but as an album it still works, surprisingly. Life On Mars and Changes still sound fresh today.
Probably not my favourite Bowie album but it’s a pretty high bar considering all his work. The first half of this album is particularly strong.
Such great songwriting, not a lot to say here. Production is so sweet as well
Some of this is the best music Bowie ever made (Changes, Life On Mars), some of it is a teensy bit forgettable. Still a brilliant album, just not his absolute best.
I've always appreciated Bowie but never got into him, guess there's no time like the present. I like this album but not something that I'm super into. I guess I can appreciate David Bowie as an icon without actually loving his music; some of my favorite artists were heavily influenced by him. I would never turn off a Bowie song but not sure I would ever put one on. Great for what it is and I will have to try another album to see if it "sticks"
Not my vibe
Coming in between the bluesy rock of The Man who Sold the World and the magnificently overblown rock opera of Ziggy, Hunky Dory is a much more conventional pop album with a much tighter focus on songwriting rather than the showmanship that became a staple of Bowie's later music. Not for nothing did many of the songs on Hunky Dory become staple songs of Bowie's live concerts all the way till the end of his career, there's a raw emotion that radiates from every song and the short nature of the tracks (only three of the eleven on the album go past the four minute mark) means nothing ever lingers long enough to bore the listener. It's probably the most straightforward album Bowie ever wrote and the one that firmly established him as pop rock's vanguard for the rest of the 1970's.
First time hearing. Great album.
Oh! You Pretty Things might be one of his best tracks. Changes is a classic, as is Life on Mars
A lot of great songs. Not as consistently great as some of Bowie’s albums.
Changes was good
Good sounds like a good David Bowie music
Hunky Dory isn't among my favorite Bowie albums, but is an important album for Bowie as much as it is for the Art Pop genre. No historical ranting this time, Hunky Dory is what David Bowie gathered the good aspects of pop music of his time into a better than average pop album for its time. Still probably his worst album that appears on this list. Yay.
Me gusta
What a banger of an album. Life on mars has to be one of my all time fav Bowie tracks. This one is very close to being a 5 star but not quite there 4.3
Great album start to finish
Album 40/1001 With Hot Fuss still fresh in my head, I've just noticed how much of a rip-off Mr Brightside is of Queen Bitch. They call themselves The Killers? The Thieves, more like. 👨🎤 Favourite lyrics: THE BEWLAY BROTHERS "Lay me place and bake me pie I'm starving for me gravy" Favourite song: Life on Mars? 🔭🌌 Honourable mention: Changes 🔄🔁 Queen Bitch 👑🐩 Quicksand ⏳️⌛️ Oh! You Pretty Things 🙀😻 The Bewlay Brothers 👨🎤🙇♂️
one of his better ones.
Just had a Bowie album recently and loved it. Here's another.... love it as well. Maybe even more than the last. 4.5/5
Awesome album!
this album is all hunky dory
Every song on this record is pretty epic. David Bowie’s a magician who transforms music into emotional sorcery that cuts straight to the soul.
What a fantastic album, seeing Bowie shift to a more piano/rock style is a fun listen. This album has multiple incredible piano sections. And some other songs people don't like(Andy Warhol, which is a solid track) What is there to be said about Life on Mars that already hasn't been said?? Some amazing storytelling, perfectly completed by the music in a non didactic way, building into climax which is the best chorus on the album where the lyrics are working in the opposite direction of the verse. *Chefs kiss* Then you have Changes, Then Pretty Things, Quicksand, Andy Warhol and The Bewlay Brothers. Favorite track, Queen Bitch, straight punk rock in vein of The Modern Lovers Solid 4/5 stars those 41 minutes just roll by
Best: Life on Mars? Worst: Fill your heart Liked songs: 11/11, 100% Mid 4 After listening to Blackstar a few times this week, its really interesting to juxtapose it with the album Bowie became Bowie. Of course his sound and lyricism developed quite a bit in the 4 and a half decades separating the album, but it's clear that Bowie has always been an artist unafraid to blaze his own trail and remain fearlessly unique. It's just a fun album all around, with pretty solid lyrics and a really unique but infectious sound. Its one of those albums where I actually think the B-sides carry, and really make me appreciate the album, though of course the two singles everyone knows are amazing. A very fitting album to essentially start perhaps the greatest artist to ever have lived's career.
I really enjoyed this album. At the time, the artist was unusual, different, and exciting and producing music with a unique sound. I really liked the song, "Kooks". The song, "Life On Mars?" was the most familiar as that was the song most played on the radio. My least favorite song, "The Bewlay Brothers" as the song went on a little too long.
Solid Bowie album, happy with this one
Going well.
Bowie at times can feel complex, but this is one of those albums that helps define him, in my opinion. Layered, unique, confusing, but ultimately very entertaining! If one were to be introduced to Bowie, LIFE ON MARS? would be an apt selection. While side 1 obviously is much more acclaimed, for obvious reasons, I've grown to really appreciate how impressive side 2 is, especially THE BEWLAY BROTHERS
An album that makes you feel like the title suggests. One of the better Bowie albums imo and a great one to sing along to that gets stuck in your head in a good way
I've already listened to his album (24). Not Bowie's best, but Rick Wakeman steals the show. Changes + Life on Mars
So good
Quirky without losing depth.
Pretty solid
I never thought I would listen to a Bowie album that I would enjoy. I may actually even come back to this one
Outside of this challenge I've been running my own challenges for a number of years. One of those was finishing the Bowie discography. I came to the conclusion that I'm a fan of the idea of Bowie rather than the reality. His supposed ability to shift like a chameleon didn't ring true, and many of his albums felt indistinct. I couldn't love his vocals. I didn't like the glam stuff. He seemed like he had only two types of song. But, it's Bowie, I get his importance. Nothing against him, but the music does little for me. Having said that, this one includes my favourite Bowie song, one I'd loved before I ever heard the album (Quicksand). My personal take is three stars, but the Bowie importance bumps it to 4.
Historically my favourite Bowie album, and I imagine that will hold up as I get like seven more of them in my final 300-ish albums here. Queen Bitch probably rocks more than any of his other songs.
I liked it a lot
Life on Mars are all timer Bowie songs, a good chunk of the album doesn’t quite live up but it finishes strong.
David Bowie still is amazing. Cover 5/5 love the art
An all-timer within the discography of an all-timer, though not completely consistent in its quality (the best tracks are a cut above the rest, and Eight Line Poem basically just takes up space) it's still a rather wild joy from start to finish, it just took a little extra time for this wildness and inspiration to be honed and assembled into a more coherent masterpiece in Ziggy Stardust But there's no sense in skipping this one either, obviously
Life on Mars I knew and like. The rest is also nice but I’ll have to listen to it again. Second listen is also very cool and funky I like it
7.8
Probably my favorite Bowie album so far, I liked it for the most part. Enough melody and hooks, a little bit experimental, but not too far, it was pretty palatable. The hits are amazing as always.
4.5
Great album. I can see a lot of his influence in modern music. Really like Andy Warhol and Fill Your Heart. This album is added to a list of repeats now.
Schon David Bowie.
I've been meaning to listen to this one for a while. I enjoyed it but need another listen.
good
Changes is a great song! The whole album is a vibe.
Some hits but a bit inconsistent
This young Bowie guy’s showing lots of potential
One of Bowie’s best albums in my opinion. I like how it feels like a musical.
Finally a Bowie album I'm not going to give a 5 to. People see this as the beginning of Bowie's hot streak, and based on the high points on this album, I can sort of see why, but there's too many tracks here that I don't really feel anything about, which I can't say for the album that follows it. Sure, Life On Mars is one of the greatest songs of all time, but I feel people we just impressed that Bowie was finally putting 4-5 amazing tracks on an album, as opposed to just 1, maybe 2 at best. I am giving 4 Stars though. Changes, Oh You Pretty Things, Queen Bitch and the Belway Brothers all deserve the praise they receive.
Not unexpectedly, this is very good Bowie with Life on Mars leading the line for me. Go buy it.
Changes always makes me think of Shrek 2
3.8
This was great! I have a soft spot for life on mars in particular, but the album as a whole holds up well. It's catchy, varied, well written... You can tell he was writing from the piano for most of it, which I tend to like as a pianist. Songs just sound different when you write them from different instruments, even if those instruments aren't in the final recording at all. This wasn't quite masterpiece level for me, but a good time was had listening, and I'd definitely listen again.
It's tender and understated but also powerful. Bowie's undeniable talent comes through with a strength and softness like a velvet hammer.
A classic, albeit with a couple of weak ones which stop it being a 5
If Aladdin Sane was Bowie building on Ziggy by turning everything up to 11, this was him carefully exploring the ideas that would become it. Of his classic albums, it's the most playful, having an almost twee sound at times. But it's also one of the sparsest, being dominated by piano and acoustic guitar with some string flourishes. This formula usually succeeds; "Life On Mars" is a top five Bowie song, "Changes" and "Quicksand" are highlights, and his Dylan and Velvet Underground impersonations near the end hint at the range he'd display later in his career.. But a few tracks, like "Kooks" and "Fill Your Heart," feel a bit too light and airy. It all comes together into a transitional album that exhibits his best qualities without the variety or excitement he'd showcase later on.
This is probably what a lot people think of when they think of “David Bowie.” Go figure the two songs I don’t like on here are named after two people I don’t like.
I wasn’t raised with David Bowie so I hadn’t listened through any of his albums in entirety. I’m not unaware of the massive cultural impact he made and how devastating his death was for many. You Pretty Things was my fave on the album
Bowie obviously one of the goats but theres a few skips on this album. Maybe i’m just not cool enough. 4.7/5.0 Best Song: Life On Mars - jesus christ, this song is just unbelievably good, can only dream of ever writing something like this.
Class album, so many highlights. Changes, Oh! You Pretty Thing, Kooks and Queen Bitch are phenomenal songs. You could argue Life on Mars is one of the defining songs of the 70s. Crazy that this isnt even in my top 5 Bowie albums. Saying that, the bad songs on this album are pretty bad, Andy Warhol, Quicksand and the Bewlay Brothers are just not good songs, which knocks a bit off shine off the album. 4.2/5
Cool
Man, turns out I might be a bigger Bowie fan than I thought I was. Great song writing that’s still accessible but still very creative and unique with some of the switches, instruments, etc. Also some epic moments and builds. Seems like one of Bowies biggest talents. When do we get the labrynth soundtrack? 4.25
I’m not a giant Bowie fan - I do really enjoy much of his work but I’m no obsessive and my patience has its limits. Yet, every track here is seemingly engrained into my psyche - each song is so ridiculously familiar it’s like they’ve always been there. And the really odd thing about it, is I can listen to them again and again without (much) complaint. It was a pleasure listening to this - I didn’t skip a second and when it finished, I could have listened again. I didn’t though.
Off the cuff remark: by far my favourite Bowie album, but with references to Goebbels and making "way for the homo superior" I am uncomfortable with the Nazism dabbling he has had and seem evident here. Standout track: there are several but "Changes" is fabulous Revisit?: my most frequently listened to Bowie album.
Know what. I have, as a result of this challenge, come to dislike David Bowie and borderline hate Bob Dylan. And yet, despite both names coming up on this album (even as a tribute for one), I'd say it was a pretty enjoyable experience overall. It truly is hard to listen to this album and not recognize there's something great about it. It's still not quite my cup of tea and there wasn't anything I'd save to listen to later, but it's definitely still worth a listen.
Great album. I only knew Bowie from the labyrinth and a few key songs. This is a totally different side of Bowie I’m hearing. I enjoyed the whole album
Doing this 1000 album thing has really showed me how little music knowledge I have. I thought I knew David Bowie but it’s embarrassing to realise I haven’t yet listened to a full album by him. This was the best hit for me yet in this album list.
David Bowie is cool. This is good. Happy to listen to this any time.
Pretty pretty pretty good..
Somewhere in-between full musical theatricality and singer-songwriter earnestness. Also, "Oh! You Pretty Things" is one of my favorite Bowie song, and "Life on Mars?" one of my favorite songs EVER, so it's automatically a good album.
One of my favorites of Bowie. Its simple and good. Life on Mars, Queen Bitch, so many greats.
Not quite the parallel to The Bends or Revolver, a mastery of form by a mostly good, but not yet great band, if only because the glam rock pursuits Bowie went on doesn’t have an equal to OK Computer or Sgt Pepper's, etc. Anyhow, by far my favourite Bowie album, it’s just amazing to think of how this came out after his previous efforts, which were good, and then oh look, here’s a master.
Really enjoyed this - not quite ziggy levels of no skip but seriously good nonetheless
