Reviews (page 7 of 14)

No one sounds like he did. So good. Great album all the way through

Very enjoyable

Omg! Love Changes and the whole album such a vibe

Bowie never disappoints. It’s crazy how good and how different so many of his albums are. Love this one. Highlights: “Changes”, “Oh! You Pretty Things” and “Life on Mars”

Hunky Dory blends Bowie’s poetic lyricism with lush glam-rock melodies and orchestration to great effect.

Yeah I'll say it. I don't like Changes. The rest of the album is sick though, especially Life on Mars.

Good listen. I sadly like the hits and Quicksand a lot more than most of the rest of album, but it was good 7.1/10

Yeeesss😁

A classic, full stop.

Best songwriter ever I wish he could sing (4.5)

perfection, i wanted to listen Bowie for a long time, i enjoyed this one

Hunky Dory was the very first David Bowie album I ever heard, 54 years ago, and after more than half a century, my take on it hasn’t shifted at all. Side one is outstanding: packed with classics like “Changes,” “Oh! You Pretty Things,” “Life on Mars?,” “Kooks,” and “Quicksand”. It’s flawless in my book and easily earns a perfect 5/5. Side two, though? It doesn’t quite match that magic for me, more of a 3/5. Overall, I’d still give the full album a solid 4/5. Timeless stuff, even if the sides feel uneven to these old ears.

Anyway, fajne. Ja tam lubię, jak on się buja/ł.

Was nice! Some classics

It was pretty good. I knew the two big songs (Changes and Life on Mars) and they were still fantastic. The rest was pretty great too. Not quite Ziggy Stardust levels (the one Bowie album I actually do know, plus a couple of other songs) but if the rest of his stuff is this level of pretty good - and I imagine it is - I'm looking forward to it.

Remember that bbc show life on mars? Was class that. Might rewatch it

Me ha gustado más que el álbum de "The cars", es David Bowie, siempre va a ser una buena opción.

its good but im not the biggest bowie fan

Fun! Would listen to more by him

I’ve listened to this a bunch of times now, because I can’t decide exactly what to say about it. I like it, it had a couple song I know, and some very fun songs. I didn’t love every song, but some were very fun. “Queen Bitch” has a line that inspired the chorus of Mr. Brightside, and I discovered this on my own!

Prefer the mix on this album over Ziggy Stardust - I like the sharper sound. Minor gripe with "Andy Warhol" - I didn't mind the song but I really don't like when artists include random studio chatter etc., it just doesn't belong on an album from my perspective (maybe as a B-side or nowadays as part of an attached extras disk or something). Is it realistically something that your average listener wants to hear every time the song plays? That being said at least it's an amusing exchange - Wingardium Leviosaaaaaaah. Highlights: - "Life on Mars?", something about this song just feels really powerful. Not sure what it is exactly. Is good. - "Quicksand", like the instrumental choices, like the vocals. Just a very expressive song. - "Queen Bitch" I think I could quite happily listen to most of this album again. High 3/Low 4.

the good songs are REALLY GOOD, and the rest of them are fine. Thank you David Bowie!

Certified classic. Not my favorite Bowie album, but it's still a great one

A strong record containing classic bowie tracks but more importantly it's evident he found his voice and style on this record. A must listen for sure

Starts well but fades

Classic. Two big hits

Kind of like a cross between early 70s rock and show tunes. I do not like show tunes, but Bowie sells it pretty effectively. It deserves its status as his first classic album, though I think it’s just a taste of things to come. Best song: Oh! You Pretty Things

This was Bowie's first great record. Previous albums had the odd classic song here and there, but this is when his Legendary Album run began. The instrumentals are more acoustic than one might expect from Bowie, with acoustic guitars and piano being the main element. Lyrically it's a bit all over the place, as Bowie would only take on the conceptualist lane on the next album, while visually all the elements were already falling in place, for instance the androgyny very evident in the cover. Key tracks: Changes Oh! You Pretty Things Life on Mars? Kooks

Each song a surprise. David Bowie cementing his legacy. Now I see. Near perfect album.

good put preferred ziggy stardust

8/10 There's no doubting how good this is and how influential, but I don't love it. Something about Bowie - does it all feel a little too performative perhaps? - which just holds it back for me. But I enjoyed it.

My third Bowie on this list (I'm still flabbergasted that there's 9 of them on here.) Prefer this one over Ziggy Stardust. Much more stripped down but I dig the melodies. Only song I really don't like is The Bewlay Brothers. Highlights: Oh! You Pretty Things, Life on Mars?, Queen Bitch

Can’t say I really get it but I had a lot of fun trying to.

Although I’ve heard and enjoyed some of his work, I’ve never been a huge Bowie fan, and this is the first time I’ve really listened to one of his albums. I have to say, I’m surprised by how much I liked it. He has a way of bringing songs to life that honestly no other artist does, and this album is absolutely full of personality. The production isn’t particularly fresh or crisp, but it has a special quality, and is fairly impressive for the era of this album. There’s plenty of interesting instrumental choices in this album, and the lyrics always seem to intrigue me. Plus the Andy Warhol song is pretty funny.

conhecia 2 músicas já achei bem legal, mesmo

This album rips

This was such a fun and light album to listen to!!!

píanó

Good piano parts in the first few songs. First two songs definitely better than the rest, not just a huge fan of his voice.

pretty great I love david bowie popular songs from this album are popular for a reason 4.5 stars 8.5/10

This is without a doubt the style of Bowie I enjoy the most. Just weird enough, and still very pleasant to listen through. Best Track: Changes

176 Hola David, amigo. Altas expectativas. Me hiciste sonreir varias veces de las sorpresas que tenías. Pero no sé si te escucharía de nuevo. Sorry?

This is pure 70s David Bowie. Moody, pensive and manic at times. Classic songs.

I need a few more listens to latch on but it’s good stuff

Good album enjoyed it allot more than I thought I would. Wouldn’t say I was ever a massive fan of David Bowie however this could change things !

Great album. 4 stars.

Knew more songs than I would have thought, great walking music

I liked this album better than Heroes. A couple of the tracks reminded me of some of the quirkier Beatles tracks and I really liked that.

“And these children that you spit on As they try to change their worlds Are immune to your consultations They're quite aware of what they're going through” What a brilliant lyric. I’m now at an age where I’m considered young by many and old by some, and I feel like I’ve been on both sides of this lyric. The album where Bowie became Bowie, one of the greatest artists in all of pop, someone who never seemed to write for anyone except himself. His experimenting with gender feels truly progressive, and it’s full of great songs to boot!

Gear: SIMGOT SuperMix 4 Artwork: 🥺👱🏻‍♀️⭐ Production (2015 Remaster): 🎧😘🤌 Music: 🎹🎨❤️‍🔥 Rating: 👌👌👌👌(👌)/5

Lots of Bowie on this list, doesn't always click with me. This one certainly does. Changes is a great opener, Life on Mars is cool, I also loved Quicksand, Song for Bob Dylan, Queen Bitch and the Bewlay Brothers. Instrumentation was great throughout and Bowie is a master performer. 4.5* for me, rounded down.

One of those albums everyone should listen to as part of their music education – but not one I keep coming back to. Life on Mars is a masterpiece. Other standout tracks: Oh! You Pretty Things, Kooks

Not my favorite Bowie, but still great

really good, can't promise i'll listen again. top songs changes oh you pretty things fill your heart

Bowie on the cusp of being "Bowie" excellent back to front, good sign of things to come.

This album feels like riding a motorcycle in a rainy morning cruising through cars and worrying if you’d slip but you won’t you’re just worried and you need to hurry because you’re late for work but when you arrive you find that everything is alright and your heart now is filled with joy

Bowie had such a distinct style in his music. He isn't exactly an amazing vocalist, but he took what he had and tore up with it. Particularly loved the performances on "Changes" and "Life on Mars."

Getting there David

très bon album, incontournable qui va très bien avec l'ambiance des fêtes et me rappelle the perks of being a wallflower.

Great person, I didn't really like his singing style, but I love his songs meanings, and I really liked some of the songs. I don't know why, but for me, I liked "Andy Warhol" the best. Legend person.

Never was a big Bowie fan but this was solid.

85/100

I rate it a 8/10 there was only a few songs I didn’t like but overall I like it

Very chill album I love David Bowie Favourite song is the song for Bob dylan

Very Good Bpwie album, one of his best but it's not quite as good as something like The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust

Some stone cold classics but I find it weak in certain places. Certainly not a bad effort though and was a sign of what to expect from him in his next few albums.

This is a good album. I already knew ‘Life on Mars.’ I ended up adding: ‘Changes,’ ‘Eight Line Poem,’ and ‘Quicksand’ to my playlists.

No diría que está entre mis favoritos de Bowie, pero tiene un grupo de hitazos que hace imposible no quererlo. Pero en general, lo siento un poco menos increíble que a sus álbumes legendarios. No por eso menos genial, claro.

love bowie

A great album from an artist I love that I have ashamedly never listened to all the way through. I got to find some deeper cut favorites that I didn't know I loved and they're surrounded by great hits like "Changes" and "Life On Mars?"

Classic Bowie what a great album. Most of the songs are awesome but some don't quite match my ear such as Andy Warhol

Good album honestly, interesting and fun listen. Did take away a track, now curious to hear more from him.

good stuff. not his best one, but very enjoyable.

Love David Bowie's music. Great first alblum but not his best. But still a 4. Great listen. Changes is one of my favorite songs.

Pretty good! I liked a good chunk of this, particularly in the beginning but some stuff later too (Andy Warhol is funny, Bewlay Brothers is good, and several others are still enjoyable listens)

Going to do something I don't usually do and rate this slightly higher than I think it deserves as an album on the strength of the singles. It definitely slackens in the middle, but his command of the piano is amazing throughout.

Nice album, only really heard "Changes" before. Obviously, Bowie is an icon but other than the first song, nothing really stood out.

Virkelig godt!

I actually listened to Hunky Dory right before I started my 1001 Albums Generator project and quite liked it. I've yet to listen to everything by Bowie, but from all of the albums that I've listened to, I think Hunky Dory might actually be my favourite one. Not sure if I would say that everything on it is great, but rather everything is good with individual standouts like Changes or Life on Mars.

An interesting listen. Definitely not my preferred genre, but I see why Bowie is held in such high regard.

Timeless

Tracks 1 -4: Damn David Bowie had the sauce Track 5: 60s pop slop :(

This is such a good album!!! Probably one of Bowie's best!

Andy Warhol :)

Best Bowie so far, I LOVE Life on Mars

Some songs are great, but not all of them are my cup of coffee.

was a good listen but got distracted

I was gonna say this feels like a space themed Bob Dylan album, but then i heard Andy Warhol and that kinda broke that immersion. Anyways this is another bunch of songs form David, they're really hopeful and gleeful. 8/10

Potentially my favorite of Bowie's albums. Not quite as "dancy" as Young Americans, but more of a rock vibe. I proffer again that Bowie is not a great singer (in that I don't think he has a great voice), but he is a phenomenal artist and musician. Has great instincts for when and where to be different.

It’s Bowie!

Actually enjoyed it. Changes is a little too cliche from its overuse in movies and stuff, but the album is fun, musical, and cohesive. Would listen again.

Big enjoy

Although Life on Mars is my favorite song on the album, I prefer my Bowie with guitar rather than piano. Give me the main acoustic riff from Andy Warhol or the electrics on Queen Bitch any day

Look out, you rock'n'rollers

This is the third Bowie album I’ve listened to so far, and I’m really loving his stuff. This album’s a near 5, but I just wish it wasn’t so front heavy and it kept the momentum going all the way through. Otherwise, it’s still a very solid album, and I’m excited to listen to more from him.

Brilliant. Under rated album of Bowie’s, especially by myself. Greatly enjoyed. 9/10

Bowie’s gets one step closer to making a masterpiece. Favs: Changes Oh! You Pretty Things Life On Mars Queen Bitch Least Favs: Kooks

Hieno levy 👌🏼

Fun glam rock/pop album that sees Bowie coming into his own. The first half is stellar with arguably his best song ever "Life on Mars". The 2nd half falls off a bit but there are still good tracks like "Queen Bitch". It really shows where he is headed after this album, like he's in labor with Ziggy Stardust.

Not my favourite Bowie album but very consistent and a classic. Andy Warhol is one of my favs

4.5 - Good Stuff. Plenty I knew. Some Vaudeville piano songs.

A great sample of classic rock, but a bit out there conceptually

An excellent, enjoyable album.

Changes is an all-time great. God, I love Bowie.

"So I turned myself to face me But I've never caught a glimpse..." Love how piano-forward this album is. *Eight-line poem

I may regret only giving this four stars. My mum's favourite Bowie album, and it is of course brilliant. No weak tracks - just on the whole it doesn't carry the same weight as The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, Station to Station, or some of his later stuff. This album is a little lighter and more whimsical in the lyrics, which I do like a lot. I enjoy every song, but at no point did I really go WOW, like I do with a lot of his other work. I think part of it may be due to the fact that most songs are sort of ballads. Who knows. Very good, but not his best.

I am not sure how overall these years I’ve criminally underrated David Bowie. This is an outstanding album. Definitely worth your time.

Not my favorite Bowie album but still beast.

Quite the experimental album but I guess that is what Bowie was all about.

So good I listened to it twice. It's "vintage Bowie" but it's got some super familiar classic tracks interspersed with some decent less known material that holds it all together rather well.

So excited to have a David Bowie album! The only song I knew beforehand was Changes. It’s the first song and it’s also the song I listened to on the way to my new job! :) It wasn’t my favorite David Bowie album, but I still liked it. It was a little slow and I needed faster tunes for the morning. Best Songs: Changes (duh) Oh! You Pretty Things Life on Mars? (Have you ever noticed David Bowie’s best songs are about space?) Worst Songs: Andy Warhol

Solid stuff

I still don't care for David Bowie but this earlier album was better than his later ones, IMO.

Very interesting and ahead of it's time I would say. Better than I expected fs.

Who knew Post Pop began in '71? With Ronson more background and Wakeman's piano to the fore this is a real mix of styles but as an album it still works, surprisingly. Life On Mars and Changes still sound fresh today.

Probably not my favourite Bowie album but it’s a pretty high bar considering all his work. The first half of this album is particularly strong.

Such great songwriting, not a lot to say here. Production is so sweet as well

Some of this is the best music Bowie ever made (Changes, Life On Mars), some of it is a teensy bit forgettable. Still a brilliant album, just not his absolute best.

I've always appreciated Bowie but never got into him, guess there's no time like the present. I like this album but not something that I'm super into. I guess I can appreciate David Bowie as an icon without actually loving his music; some of my favorite artists were heavily influenced by him. I would never turn off a Bowie song but not sure I would ever put one on. Great for what it is and I will have to try another album to see if it "sticks"

Not my vibe

Coming in between the bluesy rock of The Man who Sold the World and the magnificently overblown rock opera of Ziggy, Hunky Dory is a much more conventional pop album with a much tighter focus on songwriting rather than the showmanship that became a staple of Bowie's later music. Not for nothing did many of the songs on Hunky Dory become staple songs of Bowie's live concerts all the way till the end of his career, there's a raw emotion that radiates from every song and the short nature of the tracks (only three of the eleven on the album go past the four minute mark) means nothing ever lingers long enough to bore the listener. It's probably the most straightforward album Bowie ever wrote and the one that firmly established him as pop rock's vanguard for the rest of the 1970's.

First time hearing. Great album.

Oh! You Pretty Things might be one of his best tracks. Changes is a classic, as is Life on Mars

A lot of great songs. Not as consistently great as some of Bowie’s albums.

Changes was good

Good sounds like a good David Bowie music

Hunky Dory isn't among my favorite Bowie albums, but is an important album for Bowie as much as it is for the Art Pop genre. No historical ranting this time, Hunky Dory is what David Bowie gathered the good aspects of pop music of his time into a better than average pop album for its time. Still probably his worst album that appears on this list. Yay.

Me gusta

What a banger of an album. Life on mars has to be one of my all time fav Bowie tracks. This one is very close to being a 5 star but not quite there 4.3

Great album start to finish

Album 40/1001 With Hot Fuss still fresh in my head, I've just noticed how much of a rip-off Mr Brightside is of Queen Bitch. They call themselves The Killers? The Thieves, more like. 👨‍🎤 Favourite lyrics: THE BEWLAY BROTHERS "Lay me place and bake me pie I'm starving for me gravy" Favourite song: Life on Mars? 🔭🌌 Honourable mention: Changes 🔄🔁 Queen Bitch 👑🐩 Quicksand ⏳️⌛️ Oh! You Pretty Things 🙀😻 The Bewlay Brothers 👨‍🎤🙇‍♂️

one of his better ones.

Just had a Bowie album recently and loved it. Here's another.... love it as well. Maybe even more than the last. 4.5/5

Awesome album!

this album is all hunky dory

Every song on this record is pretty epic. David Bowie’s a magician who transforms music into emotional sorcery that cuts straight to the soul.

What a fantastic album, seeing Bowie shift to a more piano/rock style is a fun listen. This album has multiple incredible piano sections. And some other songs people don't like(Andy Warhol, which is a solid track) What is there to be said about Life on Mars that already hasn't been said?? Some amazing storytelling, perfectly completed by the music in a non didactic way, building into climax which is the best chorus on the album where the lyrics are working in the opposite direction of the verse. *Chefs kiss* Then you have Changes, Then Pretty Things, Quicksand, Andy Warhol and The Bewlay Brothers. Favorite track, Queen Bitch, straight punk rock in vein of The Modern Lovers Solid 4/5 stars those 41 minutes just roll by

Best: Life on Mars? Worst: Fill your heart Liked songs: 11/11, 100% Mid 4 After listening to Blackstar a few times this week, its really interesting to juxtapose it with the album Bowie became Bowie. Of course his sound and lyricism developed quite a bit in the 4 and a half decades separating the album, but it's clear that Bowie has always been an artist unafraid to blaze his own trail and remain fearlessly unique. It's just a fun album all around, with pretty solid lyrics and a really unique but infectious sound. Its one of those albums where I actually think the B-sides carry, and really make me appreciate the album, though of course the two singles everyone knows are amazing. A very fitting album to essentially start perhaps the greatest artist to ever have lived's career.

I really enjoyed this album. At the time, the artist was unusual, different, and exciting and producing music with a unique sound. I really liked the song, "Kooks". The song, "Life On Mars?" was the most familiar as that was the song most played on the radio. My least favorite song, "The Bewlay Brothers" as the song went on a little too long.

Solid Bowie album, happy with this one

Going well.

Bowie at times can feel complex, but this is one of those albums that helps define him, in my opinion. Layered, unique, confusing, but ultimately very entertaining! If one were to be introduced to Bowie, LIFE ON MARS? would be an apt selection. While side 1 obviously is much more acclaimed, for obvious reasons, I've grown to really appreciate how impressive side 2 is, especially THE BEWLAY BROTHERS

An album that makes you feel like the title suggests. One of the better Bowie albums imo and a great one to sing along to that gets stuck in your head in a good way

I've already listened to his album (24). Not Bowie's best, but Rick Wakeman steals the show. Changes + Life on Mars

So good

Quirky without losing depth.

Pretty solid

I never thought I would listen to a Bowie album that I would enjoy. I may actually even come back to this one

Outside of this challenge I've been running my own challenges for a number of years. One of those was finishing the Bowie discography. I came to the conclusion that I'm a fan of the idea of Bowie rather than the reality. His supposed ability to shift like a chameleon didn't ring true, and many of his albums felt indistinct. I couldn't love his vocals. I didn't like the glam stuff. He seemed like he had only two types of song. But, it's Bowie, I get his importance. Nothing against him, but the music does little for me. Having said that, this one includes my favourite Bowie song, one I'd loved before I ever heard the album (Quicksand). My personal take is three stars, but the Bowie importance bumps it to 4.

Historically my favourite Bowie album, and I imagine that will hold up as I get like seven more of them in my final 300-ish albums here. Queen Bitch probably rocks more than any of his other songs.

I liked it a lot

Life on Mars are all timer Bowie songs, a good chunk of the album doesn’t quite live up but it finishes strong.

David Bowie still is amazing. Cover 5/5 love the art

An all-timer within the discography of an all-timer, though not completely consistent in its quality (the best tracks are a cut above the rest, and Eight Line Poem basically just takes up space) it's still a rather wild joy from start to finish, it just took a little extra time for this wildness and inspiration to be honed and assembled into a more coherent masterpiece in Ziggy Stardust But there's no sense in skipping this one either, obviously

Life on Mars I knew and like. The rest is also nice but I’ll have to listen to it again. Second listen is also very cool and funky I like it

Probably my favorite Bowie album so far, I liked it for the most part. Enough melody and hooks, a little bit experimental, but not too far, it was pretty palatable. The hits are amazing as always.

Great album. I can see a lot of his influence in modern music. Really like Andy Warhol and Fill Your Heart. This album is added to a list of repeats now.

Schon David Bowie. Hat was zum anhören, aber schon grade eher Theater mäßig. Queen ist glaube auch so eine Richtung.

I've been meaning to listen to this one for a while. I enjoyed it but need another listen.

Changes is a great song! The whole album is a vibe.

Some hits but a bit inconsistent

This young Bowie guy’s showing lots of potential

One of Bowie’s best albums in my opinion. I like how it feels like a musical.

Finally a Bowie album I'm not going to give a 5 to. People see this as the beginning of Bowie's hot streak, and based on the high points on this album, I can sort of see why, but there's too many tracks here that I don't really feel anything about, which I can't say for the album that follows it. Sure, Life On Mars is one of the greatest songs of all time, but I feel people we just impressed that Bowie was finally putting 4-5 amazing tracks on an album, as opposed to just 1, maybe 2 at best. I am giving 4 Stars though. Changes, Oh You Pretty Things, Queen Bitch and the Belway Brothers all deserve the praise they receive.

Not unexpectedly, this is very good Bowie with Life on Mars leading the line for me. Go buy it.

Changes always makes me think of Shrek 2

This was great! I have a soft spot for life on mars in particular, but the album as a whole holds up well. It's catchy, varied, well written... You can tell he was writing from the piano for most of it, which I tend to like as a pianist. Songs just sound different when you write them from different instruments, even if those instruments aren't in the final recording at all. This wasn't quite masterpiece level for me, but a good time was had listening, and I'd definitely listen again.

It's tender and understated but also powerful. Bowie's undeniable talent comes through with a strength and softness like a velvet hammer.

A classic, albeit with a couple of weak ones which stop it being a 5

If Aladdin Sane was Bowie building on Ziggy by turning everything up to 11, this was him carefully exploring the ideas that would become it. Of his classic albums, it's the most playful, having an almost twee sound at times. But it's also one of the sparsest, being dominated by piano and acoustic guitar with some string flourishes. This formula usually succeeds; "Life On Mars" is a top five Bowie song, "Changes" and "Quicksand" are highlights, and his Dylan and Velvet Underground impersonations near the end hint at the range he'd display later in his career.. But a few tracks, like "Kooks" and "Fill Your Heart," feel a bit too light and airy. It all comes together into a transitional album that exhibits his best qualities without the variety or excitement he'd showcase later on.

This is probably what a lot people think of when they think of “David Bowie.” Go figure the two songs I don’t like on here are named after two people I don’t like.

I wasn’t raised with David Bowie so I hadn’t listened through any of his albums in entirety. I’m not unaware of the massive cultural impact he made and how devastating his death was for many. You Pretty Things was my fave on the album

Bowie obviously one of the goats but theres a few skips on this album. Maybe i’m just not cool enough. 4.7/5.0 Best Song: Life On Mars - jesus christ, this song is just unbelievably good, can only dream of ever writing something like this.

Class album, so many highlights. Changes, Oh! You Pretty Thing, Kooks and Queen Bitch are phenomenal songs. You could argue Life on Mars is one of the defining songs of the 70s. Crazy that this isnt even in my top 5 Bowie albums. Saying that, the bad songs on this album are pretty bad, Andy Warhol, Quicksand and the Bewlay Brothers are just not good songs, which knocks a bit off shine off the album. 4.2/5

Man, turns out I might be a bigger Bowie fan than I thought I was. Great song writing that’s still accessible but still very creative and unique with some of the switches, instruments, etc. Also some epic moments and builds. Seems like one of Bowies biggest talents. When do we get the labrynth soundtrack? 4.25

I’m not a giant Bowie fan - I do really enjoy much of his work but I’m no obsessive and my patience has its limits. Yet, every track here is seemingly engrained into my psyche - each song is so ridiculously familiar it’s like they’ve always been there. And the really odd thing about it, is I can listen to them again and again without (much) complaint. It was a pleasure listening to this - I didn’t skip a second and when it finished, I could have listened again. I didn’t though.

Off the cuff remark: by far my favourite Bowie album, but with references to Goebbels and making "way for the homo superior" I am uncomfortable with the Nazism dabbling he has had and seem evident here. Standout track: there are several but "Changes" is fabulous Revisit?: my most frequently listened to Bowie album.

Know what. I have, as a result of this challenge, come to dislike David Bowie and borderline hate Bob Dylan. And yet, despite both names coming up on this album (even as a tribute for one), I'd say it was a pretty enjoyable experience overall. It truly is hard to listen to this album and not recognize there's something great about it. It's still not quite my cup of tea and there wasn't anything I'd save to listen to later, but it's definitely still worth a listen.

Great album. I only knew Bowie from the labyrinth and a few key songs. This is a totally different side of Bowie I’m hearing. I enjoyed the whole album

Doing this 1000 album thing has really showed me how little music knowledge I have. I thought I knew David Bowie but it’s embarrassing to realise I haven’t yet listened to a full album by him. This was the best hit for me yet in this album list.

David Bowie is cool. This is good. Happy to listen to this any time.

Pretty pretty pretty good..

Somewhere in-between full musical theatricality and singer-songwriter earnestness. Also, "Oh! You Pretty Things" is one of my favorite Bowie song, and "Life on Mars?" one of my favorite songs EVER, so it's automatically a good album.

One of my favorites of Bowie. Its simple and good. Life on Mars, Queen Bitch, so many greats.

Not quite the parallel to The Bends or Revolver, a mastery of form by a mostly good, but not yet great band, if only because the glam rock pursuits Bowie went on doesn’t have an equal to OK Computer or Sgt Pepper's, etc. Anyhow, by far my favourite Bowie album, it’s just amazing to think of how this came out after his previous efforts, which were good, and then oh look, here’s a master.

Really enjoyed this - not quite ziggy levels of no skip but seriously good nonetheless

Brilliant Bowie album. First half is maybe stronger than the second in my opinion but Queen Bitch is a banger! It is a great Bowie album but I think that there is better...

Very good. Especially Queen Bitch - my favorite song by him.

Lovely piece of work from David

Bowie showing his versatility, if not his vocal power

This one was really good actually, liked it more than I thought I would. Turns out I kept putting off listening to it for no reason. Kooks would be a really good cheesy parent-child dance at a wedding. Best song: Life On Mars? Notable(s): Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things, Kooks, The Bewley Brothers

Great album

It does sound a bit like this album was crafted around Changes & Life on Mars - but still, it's Bowie, of course this was going to be a great listen. Even Bowie's off cuts are gold. Changes is such a great song and a timeless classic. Anyone born in the late 90's to mid-2000's probably listened to the Shrek 2 version before Bowie's original - which is hilarious. This thing definitely is front loaded. The latter half slows things down a lot. Good listen, probably wouldn't rush back to anything but the two hits on this thing, but definitely listenable and would not complain if I had to put this on again.

The world’s first closeted straight man in another record of sufficient quality to obfuscate historical acts that would irreparably tarnish the legacy of a lesser artist. Some of the B sides fucking stink.

Pretty decent all throughout, with a few standout songs (mostly the singles which are mostly famous).

I enjoyed this album I am only so so on David Bowie but this was a fun listen

35/1089 Changes is a perfect pop song, i’m still a bit biased towards the Shrek version though. Oh you pretty things is also v familiar and a classic. Life on Mars? is just too good, Jessica Lange’s rendition on American Horror Story will always stick with me but it’s really an iconic song and concept Fill Your Heart really isn’t clicking i just found it mostly irritating it’s a cool album and i prefer it over The Next Day which is the other Bowie project i’ve heard in full but i feel like Changes, Life on Mars and Oh You Pretty Things set a high standard that the rest of the album struggled to keep up with a little faves: Changes, Life on Mars?, The Bewlay Brothers least faves: Fill Your Heart, Eight Line Poem 4 stars 71/100

Super solid album. To me, this is typical, peak Bowie. It's weird in a way that only he could be. The songs are a bit theatrical, but keep you interested in the regard.

A classic Bowie album that really captures his artistic brilliance and spirit. I do prefer guitar driven Bowie over piano driven Bowie. This album has a bit of both but I do get a bit lost on a couple of these tracks (I find "Kooks" to be a bit creepy and unsettling and "Fill Your Heart" also a bit strange) but this album is redeemed by some fantastic songs in "Quicksand" "Changes" and my favourite - "Life on Mars." I think this is close to a full 5 stars if I was judging on creativity but on pure listening enjoyment I give it a 4.

I absolutely adore Bowie, but this is probably one of my least favourite Bowie albums on the list. That’s not to say I dislike Hunky Dory, it’s still a great album, but it feels more so like an attempt for Bowie to find his voice and the songwriting and production feel a bit inconsistent. Life on Mars?, Changes, Queen Bitch, and Oh! You Pretty Things are some of the best songs Bowie has ever written. Quicksand and Bewlay Brothers are also phenomenal deep cuts. The other songs on this album just don’t move me at all no matter how many times I listen to them.

Definitely an album. While I love it and see how every coffeeshop musician adores it, not my fav

classic bowie

A great Bowie album, although not a personal favorite for me. But also Bowie has like 5 albums that I think are among the best of all time so this not being one of my favorites from him doesn’t really mean much. Some all timers on here for sure and his first album that feels like he has found himself

Splendid und marvellous. Great album, great lyrics, and a bunch of Bowie and his infinite creativity. I love it

Not one of his best but still a solid album

The arrival of a genius. He leaves behind his folky earthy songs and looks towards the stars.

This reminds me or a lot of albums like the Beatles or Michael Jackson,, where there’s 1-2 great songs and the rest are more there for filler, not bad but not amazing. Easy 4 stars but doesn’t quite make it up to 5/5 for me

When it comes to Bowie’s glam rock era, this is easily one of my favorite albums. He strikes a great balance here, making music that’s accessible to a wide audience while still keeping his experimental edge intact. “Changes,” one of his most iconic tracks, is a song I still enjoy hearing to this day. One standout detail is that this album features Rick Wakeman on piano and keyboards. Not long after, Wakeman became more focused on his work with Yes, and his collaborations with Bowie tapered off. Still, the two stayed on good terms, which adds a nice touch to their story.

Elevated by 2 of Bowie’s greatest songs, however loses a lot of steam in the second half. Great vocals and interesting songwriting as to be expected. One thing I’ve grown to hate is acoustic guitar in classic rock albums that were clearly recorded through a single mic and not DI’d; that washboard effect where the picking comes through louder than the actual chords being played gets grating and it’s constant in the second half of this album - surprised to say as a guitar man that the piano has a much better sound in this album. Changes (10/10) Oh! You Pretty Thing (8/10) Eight Line Poem (7/10) Life on Mars? (10/10) Kooks (7/10) Quicksand (8/10) Fill Your Heart (7/10) Andy Warhol (7/10) Song for Bob Dylan (7/10) Queen Bitch (7/10) The Bewlay Brothers (6/10) 7.6/10

4 stars. Good Bowie album!

excited for more bowie

At least Bowie seemed to grow out of his offensive opinions (unlike Morrissey who grew into them), wasn’t obviously a plagiarist (unlike Paul Simon) and wrote better songs than Neil Young. But really? 3 Bowie albums is enough though if there were more than 1001 maybe I could tolerate it. Changes and the man who sold the world are truly great though. Life on Mars is wonderfully great. And maybe this album is one of the three. But there’s a bit of filler, unlike Ziggy. I’m giving this 3. Though out of the context of here it’s probably a 4.5. So ok a 4. But hold off on the Bowie.

love u bowie xx

Genre: Pop Rock A very solid, very well-produced and engineered (shoutout Beatles legend Ken Scott), and very enjoyable pop record. Bowie was hitting his stride in the early 70s, and was primed and ready to release some of the decades most influential pop and glam rock. This is an album that has some great pop classics (Changes), some great Bowie classics (Life on Mars?), and some really great deep cuts (Kooks, Andy Warhol). Really good stuff from Bowie, and it’s nowhere near his ultimate best. 4/5

je prépare le déménagement l'album a été un bon son de fond haha la meuf sur l'album ressemble grave à Zaho de Sagazan ça me fume

rather than reheating lou reed’s nachos, bowie was kinda preheating his nachos with this album…just kidding, not everything is about lou reed. except when it is. there’s a lot going on here, and the heavy theatricality makes it feel a little silly at points. this combined with how overplayed ‘changes’ and ‘life on mars?’ are leads to a certain difficulty in taking it seriously. BUT i did enjoy it. i actually really like the warhol song—that spanish guitar is so goddamn random but ultimately quite cool—although i can’t believe that bowie actually expected warhol to not completely hate it lol. i also like the bob dylan tribute. awwww it’s kind of cute that bowie wrote all these songs about his celebrity crushes… fav tracks: oh! you pretty things; queen bitch; andy warhol; song for bob dylan; the bewlay brothers; changes

there was a time in my life where this music felt like the most interesting and weird thing I'd ever heard so I will always care about it for that reason. however I did not feel that way this time. but it is a good album. Fav tracks: Queen Bitch, Changes

Super fun overall. Again an artist I know of more than I knew. I had a fun time listening to this (twice) but don't have much more to say

David visited me in a dream once. He said, “you pretentious twat, this is the most common dream about me that posers have.” I said, “don’t be mean, some of the music is transcendent and some is artsy garble.” He said, “just for that, I’m going to sing an eight-minute song about an electric penguin that’s danceable and completely inscrutable.” And I said, “David, please, make it just six minutes.” And he then made it eleven. I love him so much.

Bowie is a favourite. This album is a bit uneven, but with great highlights! Worth a place in the «collection»

Bowie seems a tad over-represented.on this list. That said, this one belongs on it, pretty near peak Bowie for me.

This is the last of the Bowie albums on my 1001 albums journey, in some ways, the generator has saved the best until last. I enjoyed this much more than the other Bowie albums we've had on the list.

8/10 Favourite: Life on Mars? Least Favourite: Eight Line Poem

Enjoyed this. Probably the best Bowie album I’ve had on the list so far. The album really flows well. “Life on Mars?” is a great song. 4/5 Will listen again

Junto a The Man Who Sold The World, uno de los primeros grandes discos de Bowie, que explotaría su talento en el siguiente disco. Aquí, a pesar de encontrar algunos de sus mejores temas, aún presenta los problemas de inconsistencia de su primera época. 4/5

One of my favorite of Bowie’s catalog - creative and playful in all the best ways. “Life on Mars?” Is one of the all time best rock tracks in my opinion, and “Bewlay Brothers” may be one of the most underrated. The whole album blends the rock and folk aspects of his songwriting with orchestral flair in places where it fits, and sparser arrangements where it helps to create a more intimate sound. Such an amazing chronicle of an artist seeming to find exactly who they are and what they have to bring to the world.

Definitely one of my favourite Bowie albums. An incredibly strong opening admittedly tails off a little bit in the second half, but that’s not to say there’s any duffers on here. It falls a little bit short of a five stars for me but it’s a really, really good album.

i listened to this album high as balls, and it was a wonderful experience. i forgot who i was and all of my problems. good listen. 3.7/5

This album has life on mars. 92/100

some fun bops

It’s very good, but not in its best shape. If his voice was produced just slightly better, the entire album would have been much much more pleasant. Music wise, very enjoyable as well.

After Changes as the opener I felt like the album quickly lulled. I assumed it was just early Bowie, and while I dug the notion of a fascination with Mars, I was like oh it’s early 70’s, Bowie hasn’t gotten weird yet, he’s still a contemporary musician carving his own path. Turns out that both 1. Space Oddity predated this by 2 years. The spaceman was here all along and 2. The album gets weird in the second half. It’s a 4 objectively, a 3 subjectively as I still wanted a bit more edge from the man to be known as Ziggy Stardust. The album feels nice and fleshed out by the end and it’s got a good balance to it, I wa shuts thrown by the early pacing after starting off with a banger of an opening.

Hot take: David Bowie is the most overrated artist of all time. I think a lot of this take comes from his explosion in pop culture after his death in 2016. I don't think he's bad, but people act like he's the most influential musician ever. Every album I've listened to of his has one or two standout songs, and the rest is pretty forgettable. This album is the same. "Changes" is a great song, and "Life on Mars?" is fun. Other than that, there's not much else going on. This is a 3.5 star album for me. I might round up due to it's brevity.

Always felt like David Bowie was just a little before our time and so I never really got into him. But this is a great album.

Not as earth-shattering as Ziggy or Low, but still pretty damn good.

No notes

Very glad I got this as I wanted to listen to this for a while. I think that as quite a lot of these are a bit stripped down, it shows how amazing a songwriter he was, and also as a storyteller, and also just making really catchy choruses, like in pretty much every song on here. He just has such a diverse and interesting discography that you'll never like each song or album for entirely the same reasons. Not to much else to say, just really good, some parts remind me a bit of Elton John, which I'm not sure is good or bad. Favourite songs: changes, life on Mars, Oh! you pretty things, kooks, quicksand, song for Bob Dylan, Queen Bitch, The Bewlay Brothers. Overall around 8/10

Una obra maestra

I can’t call myself a Bowie fan, but I do like a lot of his music - usually earlier music. I thoroughly enjoyed this entire album.

Agréable écoute très bon album pour un grand artiste 🙏

Oooo David Bowie. Very good, songs sounded very well made

Wonderful! Bowie at his finest, with Changes and my favorite, Life on Mars!

Another classic on deck! Again, as with so much, I never really give Bowie a shot other than the hits and I'm excited to hear some album cuts. The top of the album puts us in 4 territory without breaking a sweat. Changes is a banger. O!YPT another great one. Life on Mars? is truly an amazing song, maybe an all-timer. Back half of the album is all very good, fun stuff. Bowie rocks, end of discussion.

--Changes...never thought this was his best but still great --Oh! You Pretty Things...weird and fun --Eight Line Poem...sounds like a more classical voice could deliver a nice cover. Don't like it much as is --Life on Mars?...perfect no notes --Kooks...kooky (hah) and fun --Quicksand...a little long but it justifies its length more than other "epic" songs --Fill Your Heart...twee bullshit but Bowie makes it work --Andy Warhol...strange and yet totally accessible. Pure Bowie --Song for Bob Dylan...this one has a lot of elements I like but it's missing something. Doesn't quite come together for me --Queen Bitch...banger --The Bewlay Brothers...doesn't immediately jump out as one of the better tracks but it may take multiple listens to truly appreciate

A Bowie classic heralding music to come

Classic Bowie!!!

In my top 10 albums ever and his best

Great album by a pioneer in rock music.

[3.75/5] Final impression: I think Bowie just doesn't mesh with me which is unfortunate because his voice and the instrumentals are killer. Something about it just doesn't generally hit for me, but when it hits it HITS. Listened to on Spotify [https://open.spotify.com/album/6fQElzBNTiEMGdIeY0hy5l]. Changes - A good beat. Catchy. Second best track on here. Oh! You Pretty Things - Not that into this one, but the instrumentals are interesting in a good way. I do love a good story. Eight Line Poem - Fantastic vocals, I just don't really vibe with the track overall. Life on Mars? - Best track so far. Fun lyrics. Kooks - Don't know that I like this one. Kind of catchy though. Sounds like a song I should like, if I'm honest. The longer I let it stew, the more this one grows on me. Quicksand - Not that notable to me, but its fine. Fill Your Heart - His voice is crazy here. I don't hate it. The instrumentals here are kind of sick. Andy Warhol - Ok now we're talking. Digging the vibe of this one. The lyrics here are scratching the brain just right. The instrumentals are just fantastic. Song for Bob Dylan - I like this one alright. *Queen Bitch - This one hits. The Bewlay Brothers - I like this one. Overall notes: Some of the songs on here go kind of hard, but when they don't go hard they aren't notable to me at all. Special shout out to Changes, Life on Mars, Kooks, Andy Warhol, and Queen Bitch.

is there life on mars?

Wonderful album, I love the sound of a crisp acoustic guitar. Typical of Bowie, the singing is also great. A well rounded and enjoyable album, will definitely listen to it again. I found the Andy Warhol track quite fun.

It's not Ziggy Stardust but it's worth a 4 for the opening alone

First 4 were good

Pretty solid album.

Good Bowie, but a little 'screechy' for me right now

David Bowie's aura is off the charts

So good. Takes me back to my teens and discovering me!

Still haven’t heard a bad Bowie album and quite frankly, I don’t think I ever will.

The album received critical acclaim upon its release and continues to entertain listeners to this day. It was a marked shift from his previous, and while some of the tracks seem superfluous, the majority of them are excellent.

En un bar casi olvidado cercano a la costa Bowie brilla con la luz blanca y cristalina del mar. El aire decorado por el polvo llena los pulmones y copas de sus estrellas relegadas que cantan para que el amor cocine como siempre.

Genius.

We have Led Zeppelin at home

I wasn't always the most keen on the album format up until the last several years thanks to the ease of streaming, so when I was 14 I would just cherry pick the best songs from side 1 and say yep this is my favorite Bowie album I like hunky dory best. Well in giving it the full attention it deserves I can say it is definitely very sweet and has several of my favorite songs by the guy. yep this is not my favorite Bowie album

It’s just rock 👄💄

1. Changes - 10 Best track on the album by far. The intro is amazing and the highlight of Bowie's amazing vocals after the lead in is really nice. This is just all around one of Bowie's best songs. The constant introduction and ducking of the drum line works perfectly to bridge verse from chorus and highlights the consistent re-innovation of who Bowie was and his personas. The sax at the end is a brilliant way to end the song. 2. Oh! You Pretty Things - 10 Lovely start to the song with the way the piano is played. Vocals are amazing, lyrics are good, and the way the song eventually leads into the full instrumentals are just amazing. Another great track with an extremely catchy chorus. 3. Eight Line Poem - 7 Guitar sounds solid in this song but it's very light and feels like a bridge between the absolute powerful songs elsewhere on the album. Not much that is remarkable about it, but it is a decent enough track. 4. Life on Mars - 10 Absolute belter of a track. Instrumentally it's insanely fun with a really fun piano, drum, and guitar. Lyrically to me it's a bit strange (which I understand is part and parcel for David Bowie) but it's still a great track. The strings that come in at the end of the track are incredible. Overall, way more enjoyable than I remember the tune as being. 5. Kooks - 4 Very weak lyrically. Instrumentally it's not the strongest thing on the album either. All around it's not a bad song and the first verse is very nice but Bowie falls out of tempo at the end of the verse. It's an error repeated in the second verse as well. Overall, not particularly a great song. 6. Quicksand - 7 Really slow burner which Bowie does very well. Enjoyable track on the album. He repeats the Homo Sapiens theme in this song much like he did previously in the album. Tone changes work well here as bridges, much like Bowie does in a lot of his works. 7. Fill Your Heart - 5 Instrumentally I like this track a lot. Lyrically I do not. It's just all over the place and feels like a bombardment of ideas for what the track should have been. It doesn't ever seem to find it's purpose. 8. Andy Warhol - 8 The opening 45 of this track is the weakest part of the album so far but when the guitar finally comes in it sounds amazing. From there the track becomes really really enjoyable. Pace builds even further at the end to an all around enjoyable listen. 9. Song for Bob Dylan - 9 Excellent track. Guitar sounds amazing and the drums help emphasize the vocals when needed. Just a really all around enjoyable track. 10. Queen Bitch - 7 Complete change of tone. Guitar is much heavier than previously in the album. Lyrics in the chorus are a bit random like 90s Aerosmith were, but it's still a decent track to listen to and the verses are well put together. 11. The Bewlay Brothers - 8 Way quieter a track than anything else on the album but it builds to well into the chorus each and every time. The guitar is the real hero of the song but lyrically this is really enjoyable. Great way to end the album. Average Rating: 7.7 Adjusted to a 5-Point Scale: 3.9 out of 5 Rounded Up: 4 stars

Really good album

This is the album before Spiders From Mars. Maybe it's opening up with Changes but this album. Feels like an odd bridge from his first few albums to the Ziggy and beyond ones. Overall it's Bowie you really can't go wrong. It's a good album and I enjoy it every time I listen to it.

Classic Bowie.

This starts out like a love letter to The Beatles, but becomes more David Bowie(TM) over the course of the album. I'm not steeped enough in early 70's pop-rock to know if that was the dominant sound at the time, or if Bowie was particularly fixated on echoing the Liverpudlians. If I inherited a vinyl copy of this album it would probably get some spins, but I'm not sure I'd buy a copy. Likewise, if I had a copy of this (or, more likely, a greatest hits CD) when I was in my "classic rock phase" in high school, I think I would have really gotten into it. Maybe I need to dig into the catalog more.

Is this my favorite Bowie? Maybe. I hate Andy Warhol, though.

Really liked it! Loads of Bowie classics

Wow…this is my sixth David Bowie album so far out of 192, and by far my favorite Bowie album. (I wonder how many are on this list?) Although I was previously familiar with only two of these songs, most of them are keepers, and I will be saving this one and listening to it again. This is a four star album for me…genuinely enjoyed it.

ts kinda fire will look more into david bowie

Stand out is obviously “Life on Mars” although “Changes” has a special place in my heart because it was in the Shrek 2 soundtrack lol. Really enjoyed this album and it was pretty cohesive but it had a few songs I probably wouldn’t return to so it’s got to be 4 stars. Loved the use of piano throughout too.

Loved this.

This was a pleasant listen and reminded me that Bowie had stayed true to his style for a very long time. This could have been an 80's or 90's album from him and I wouldnt' have been able to tell, though obviously everything being remastered on the version I listened to probably helped with the production. I think "Queen Bitch" and "Changes" are my favorites from this. Some of the more slow piano oriented songs didn't catch my attention as much. I've been more of a fan of what Bowie stood for (musical experimentation, queerness, etct) than his actual music but this is legitimately good stuff. It's for sure background for me, but I wouldn't turn it off.

Great album. Life on Mars is a nigh-perfect song.

There’s a lot of this album that felt very theatrical. I also felt like the overall quality of the album got better near the end.

Very creative.

Good, maybe the best Bowie I’ve heard. Changes is a little overrated, a bit untidy. Fave Tracks: Oh You Pretty Things, Life on Mars, Andy Warhol, Queen Bitch 4.3/5

- gefiel mir bisher mit am Besten von den ganzen Bowie Alben 3-4/5

This is my second Bowie album. The first was Aladdin Sane... this is so much better. Changes and Life on Mars are obviously classics and the rest of the songs are good as well. Strong album.
