Reviews (page 9 of 14)
Iconic album cover, but the sophomore Beatles album is lacking. There are a couple of classics, but the "cover formula" is weak and after this they transitioned to all/mostly original songs. Pitchfork: n/a Rolling Stone: n/a Best Songs All My Loving Till There Was You Money
nice but not smth im gonna listen a ton to
I enjoy they kept the original mixing in the remaster, only adding clarity to the songs, even if it sounds a bit weird if you're using headphones. Pretty well put together album, early rock&roll Beatles.
Unfortunately one of my - if not the - least favorite Beatles record. Does that mean it's bad? No. But their output has way stronger records.
I do not love The Beatles and this did not change that. Fine.
When people say that The Beatles are overrated, they're thinking of albums like this one. That being said, it's fine. Not great, but not bad either. Definitely not The Beatles' best.
Vraiment oubliable
Especially Liked: Til There Was You, You Really Got A Hold On Me, Hold Me Tight, All I've Got To Do Added: None Disliked: Roll Over Beethoven (mild), I Wanna Be Your Man (mild) Favorite Song: Til There Was You

Not a great album but it is the Beatles. Listened to this many, many times over the years as with all of their other work. Never a fan of most of the cover songs they did early on. Still have some good songs nonetheless. Overall, a mixed bag.
Growing pains album for the Beatles. It sits awkwardly between the cutesy, if derivative Please Please Me and a much more defined sound of Hard Days Night. All My Loving is such a banger though
220-something record in and finally a Beatles album! And an early one too! I’m glad I can have some semblance of chronology for a change. Like I've said in other reviews, it's a little unfair to compare a record to the same band's later works. The Beatles became a phenomenon on the back of this record, but they didn't become THE BEATLES(TM) for the songs here. So, let's put aside the fact that they will become the biggest and most influential band in the whole world (forever and ever, probably) and look at this like any other mid-sixties pop album. By that measure... it's totally fine. If you're a person who seeks substance in everything they listen to, look elsewhere. But if you want a fun record you can still put on, turn up, and dance around the house like a goofball - this record is for you! There's not even a song on this record long enough to justify skipping - at 3:01 long, "You Really Got A Hold On Me" is the second longest song in the whole first half of The Beatles' catalog. Fun fact, at 3:09, "Ticket To Ride" from Help! is the longest song on the first seven Beatles records!
This album is fine overall, very strong 50s/60s rock and roll styling here. It just doesn't stand out compared to so many other strong entries in the Beatles catalog
With the Beatles isn't that bad, but it's got a ton of filler. While the filler isn't that bad, it's also not very impressive, which is the overall impression I got from this album. It's got a handful of good songs in the beginning, as well as some good ones here and there, but otherwise isn't all that compelling. I really liked the sound of "Devil in Her Heart", aside from the lyrics sounding a bit controlling. Favorite Song: "Devil in Her Heart"
Overall Rating - 3.25/5 (6.50/10). A surprisingly forgettable Beatles album.
Old Beatles are cute
Probably one of the weaker Beatles albums in my opinion. Should revisit the guitar in Till there was you, great melody there. Still a great album overall and in the last track you could see the slight style change into something abit less organised and more creative which is nice. 3.5
"I've got a song about an Octopus." "Jam it up your arse. You're lucky we still let you play drums!" 4/7 proper Beatles albums done ✅
Its a fun and catchy rock album. Not my favourite Beatles record but certainly not a bad one.
The L+R-Mix is horrible on headphones, but the songs are good.
Solid album. Very listenable. Has some catchy tunes on it scattered throughout and some others that are just kind of background noise. Considering the trajectory of The Beatles, this is a pretty tame album. Everybody's gotta start somewhere, I suppose.
This is a lovely collection of songs. Mixture of cover versions and original compositions. It wont be long and all my loving are tremendous. Non essential but a good introduction if needed to the best band to walk the earth.
Few standouts, but so much filler
Yeah I do like it and it's a classic for a reason but The Beatles are overhyped compared to who else was about at the time.
Early Beatles standard offering of short poppy rock tunes. I prefer later Beatles albums, and with some many from their catalogue already on this list, this one felt like it could be dropped to pick up something / anything else.
Doesn’t age like the later Beatles. The talent is there, the vocals have that wail that we love. It’s just a little thin in dynamics but this helps us to appreciate what they became.
Still got that Beatles charm. Just don't know if it quite cuts it for a 4
Forgettable.
The most Beatles album to ever have Beatled. very mixed album. The firsty 7 songs are the best of the album, the middle is the worst and drags on and the last few songs are just whatever. So, basically the A side is good, they could have just left it there
Not sure why this album has been selected when nearly half the songs are covers.
Absolutely a 3.5 for me. Some really solid tracks here and the rest is pleasant enough to listen to. Don't think the dated production is bothering me as much as some of y'all lol
not bad but there are better beatles albums
The Beatles records really don't get super engaging to me until Rubber Soul, but these are always an interesting insight, and there's some fun pop songs here.
Solid album with a glimmer of what's to come. Favourites: All I've Got To Do Please Mister Postman Money (That's What I Want)
First mediocre Beatles album?
Okay I liked but didn’t love - big Beatles fan but this album is def not a top one for me
Okay! Some good gems in there tho
I liked it, very fun and light! I think I will revisit it when summer comes around, maybe I will enjoy it more then!
nice
Well, it's still (or perhaps should I say "already"?) the Beatles, so the vocals are great and there are some good original songs, but it's definitely not an album I would listen to very often...
W beatles
I know Ringo is short but damn, they did our man dirty on that cover. A very solid pop rock album for 1963. I get the low score because of what we expect from The Beatles later on, but if you judge this album on its own and forget the legendary stuff that comes after, it holds up really well. Songs like “It Won’t Be Long”, “All My Loving”, and “Mr. Postman” are iconic in their own ways and still hit. Mr Postman is a personal favorite for me because of the legendary meme: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Hu0KpdW4U0c It is not their best work and it has definitely aged, but it is still a fun, energetic listen that shows how strong they already were this early in their career. 7.5/10
Old Beatles sounds so much like every other bands of that era, almost half of the songs are covers, which I find strange but it was normal back then. I mean even my local music history of that time is filled with covers, usually translated to Finnish, of which lots from US and UK, but also from Italy and other European countries. Well, now that I think about it, even Nirvana did some, like with Love Buzz... anyway. I prefer The Beatles psychedelic era. I'm not too interested in pop/rock of the 60's in general and I don't want to delve into the specifics nor look who influenced who and in what order. I guess this is fine.
Weaker than others but good
It won’t be long is less well known song but so obviously the Beatles and early Merseybeat that is can be hard to rate an album . It’s hard to say the impact on western music they had on. this early stuff is great but played with a bit of a straight bat The years in Hamburg honed them into a tight machine allowing them to explore variations from standard chord structures, they were innovating without leaving the audience behind. The early albums are a little like a history lesson . So obviously the 60 s but not (always) sounding dated and possibly quaint. Weirdly probably more important than later albums , Apart from maybe Sgt Pepper’s, but not as good. The safe option of covers makes sense to break the US but makes this album a little slow.
Really enjoyed early Beatles era in my early life, thought it was fun. It hasn't really aged well. It's ok but give me Abbey Road any day.
Half the songs are covers. Most of the originals have become classics, and I think highly of them. For an album experience I would love just Beatles songs.
Much more motown than I'm used to having mostly only heard the hits from The Beatles. The Beatles written songs definitely feel a lot less polished than the covers, but there's definitely something special there. 14 songs in 33 minutes was impressive. I thought only punk albums did that.
I know the Beatles are amazing icons and this had some good songs that I knew and a few I didn’t. But it doesn’t really hit hard for me. So 3/5
não sou muito fã deles, mas é um album bom de ouvir.
Its the Beatles so obviously I loved it, but as one of their earlier albums it was very pop-py. I can see why they drastically changed their sound on later albums. Still very much enjoyed it though.
FAVO: Till there was you, Roll Over Beethoven
We started off very strong until I got to the covers, Mr Postman was amazing but I wasn't very partial to the rest of them. I love the harmonising in You Really Got a Hold on Me Can't wait to listen to more Beatles!! Favourites: All I've Got to Do & All my Loving
It’s alright
3.5/5 - Classic Beatles album
Exactly what I expected from early Beatles. Inoffensive but dull
I didn't like how it sounded through my headphones, I had to take them off. Definitely not my favourite Beatles album. None of the songs were very memorable. 55/100, but it might just be the bad sound quality.
Its fine but the Beatles definitely made much better 3 stars Light 6 out of 10
I get that the mixing is bad, but the mixing is bad its rather frustrating make the indtruments go through both ears not just the left Mr John Lenon if youre hearing this, please be better
Good, not a forgot of mine from the Beatles but it does hit the spot!
non il mio prefe
Spin magazine did a list where they ranked all the Beatles albums, and this one didn't even crack the Top 10. So, it's not even essential Beatles listening.
That classic Beatles sound, hard to hate but also not something I’ll really listen to going forward, hence the score.
A few standout tracks, otherwise comes off a bit uninspired. Lot of cheesy and repetitive lyrics propped up by melodies that are vaguely catchy but lack much depth or maturity. You can hear the beginnings of what The Beatles would go on to become, I think it just hadn't come together yet. Highlights: All My Loving, Don't Bother Me, Money
Never heard this one before, love the covers
Not their best, strangely a lot of the best stuff here is the Motown covers and All My Loving which is a standout early track for them
Fun but so dated
Back then, long time ago, when we was shit. The world owes Bob Dylan and John Riley a huge debt for making The Beatles into The Beatles, rather than the band that made this bland offering.
Stunning for the time
I have opinions on this. This is my first front to back Beatles album. I thought the opener and the closer both were stark and kinda jarring; not much care put into song order. The ideas fly by rapidly, with each song well under 3 minutes. I almost feel like there could have been fewer (longer) songs but the same number of ideas. Apparently this is also a majority cover album, which I didn't know until after I listened. It's interesting knowing that this is the basis for popular music as we know it. It has a certain charm that is so unique to The Beatles, yet the influence is apparent in the modern artists I listen to. It's cool to hear how they had such a clear vision for their sound and executed it so precisely. Subject matter is very simple and digestible, mainly heartbreak and longing. I thought the production and mixing was clean. I did listen to the remastered version. In my critical eyes, trying to fairly rate the quality of the music over the influence of the artist, I rate this album pretty averagely. It's not bad by any means. I am excited to hear how their sound evolves over time.
Simple but not even bad at all 6.2/10
idk I don’t get the Beatles really?
It Won't Be Long - 4/5 All I've Got to Do - 5/5 All My Loving - 3/5 Don't Bother Me - 4/5 Little Child - 3/5 Till There Was You - 3/5 Please Mister Postman - 3/5 Roll Over Beethoven - 3/5 Hold Me Tight - 4/5 You Really Gotta Hold on Me - 4/5 I Wanna Be Your Man - 4/5 Devil in Her Heart - 3/5 Not a Second Time - 4/5 Money - 3/5 Average score: 3.6/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ not the most exciting Beatles listen tbh. decent covers i suppose, but they're not any better than the source material
Here I feel The Fab Four managed to navigate the 'difficult second album' with mixed success. In trying to break the mould and move further from the industry-mandated cover artistry that was commonplace at the time, several of Lennon and McCartney's original songs for this album lack the charm and intrigue of those on their first LP. Songs such as 'It Won't Be Long', 'I Wanna Be Your Man', 'Little Child' and 'Hold Me Tight' all feel positively rushed in their pop immediacy, and feel lyrically flat compared to some of their earliest original hits. That being said, the McCartney-led 'All My Loving' has charm in spades, and Harrison's outings on the covers of 'Roll Over Beethoven' and 'Devil In Her Heart' are a welcome breath of fresh air. Moreover, their blistering rendition of 'Please Mister Postman' benefits nicely from their Liverpudlian pluck and savvy. An album of brevity in more ways than one, but a clear sign of potential and more good things to come.
Good album. I really like the singing 6/10
Very interesting to hear their evolution from this album to later ones! I could totally imagine dancing to this in a 1960s house. Favourites are Don't Bother Me and Little Child.
i thought i knew all the beatles albums but clearly that is not the case! didn’t know this one existed. i feel relatively neutral towards it! it’s the beatles, it sounds like the beatles.
Eh
I enjoyed this more than I’d like to admit. There were a few catchy songs, not gonna lie. Stand-outs - It Won’t Be Long - Don’t Bother Me
Standard Beatles fare
Best Beatles album post late-afternoon lunch. Will help you take that nap you so very much need.
+1 for Youve really got a hold on me, -1 for Little child
I was ready to give this for starts. Then I re-listened and realized that many of the tracks I liked the most were covers of songs that I really liked. And generally the originals were better. So I would be giving them stars for choosing to cover good songs and covering them adequately. Of course there are some good originals on here but I think I’m going to have to knock it down to three stars because it’s really mostly covers.
More of a Colorado potato beetle than a stag beetle. Not the best but still a beetle.
So Little Child is pretty fucking weird, right?
A solid early 60's pop rock album, but remains low in my Beatles ranking. I never think of these songs or crave them. Although it was fun reading about how revolutionary it was for a British group to cover American R&B, which was underground and off the UK's radar. Hilarious that a bunch of Brits heard a 23 year old Lennon sing "You Really Got A Hold On Me" and freaking the fuck out.
Love the Beatles but this is not top tier
3/5. the lyrics are kinda bad, but the instrumentation is strong. it’s very catchy - i can see why they were so ubiquitous in the 60s. it feels a little bit like listening to sunshine.
Liverpoolian brainrot.
3/5 - best song Till There Was You
While it's ok this one could have been left off since there's already tons of other Beatles albums taking space that are much better Will I listen to again: 2%
Classic Beatles, already new them so it wasn't a discovery. Still, good rhythm, good covers on chuck berry Roll Over Beethoven.
You can hear that there’s something prewing, notably in It Won’t Be Long, All My Loving and Don’t Bother Me. But they’re not quite there yet
A classic is a classic. This brought back the old times when I was a bit younger and used to listen to this with my parents during road trips. I got into the Beatles because I wanted something to bond over with my dad and mom but also on the peak of the British hype during Tumblr era in 2011. Great album, after all this time.
Like this one more than the other one! Fav: You Really Got A Hold On Me
64/100. It’s a good record overall, and some of the songs are genuinely great. But tracks like “Little Child” or any with those kinds of lyrical themes really pull it down for me.
First time the Beatles has come up on the list. Has been a part of my record collection for a very very long time. I had a completist phase on the Beatles so bought the lot. The earlier albums get less play time tbh, so this was a good prompt to give it a listen again. It’s actually the covers that are most interesting in a way. The band are clearly running out of stuff to record at times so they just bang out numbers they’ve presumably been playing as part of their live sets for years. Highlights: - Till there was you….just a gorgeous little tune - Roll Over Beethoven. One of the definitive cover versions. - Money. Rocks pretty hard for 1963. Hints at the darkness to come. Age has dulled its impact a bit now and it can seem a little simple to modern ears, but it’s still the Beatles and deserves to be on this list. 3
5.5/10
Not their best
The Beatles weren’t build in a day. While this album is not a bad album, it is also quite unremarkable and doesn’t signal yet the greatness that the Beatles will become.
I'm not a huge fan of the early Beatles pop-rock, but I think this album is very listenable although lacking in standout/memorable tracks. The songs are very short but flow well into each other, creating a very joyful atmosphere. Like many of their pop-rock songs I think the lyrics are maybe a bit generic / dated but I like the layering and instrumentation (eg harmonica). I think it works best as an album, not as standalone tracks. Money is probably my favourite track, mainly due to John's vocals, but this is a cover Maybe between a 3 and 4, but giving a 3 by Beatles standards.
Best: Don’t Bother Me Worst: Little Child I feel like I should preface this by saying I love much of The Beatles work as a band and even later on as individual artists. “With the Beatles” felt like something that should be playing in the background while visiting my grandparents. It was an easy listen, there were no tracks that I felt particularly inclined to skip while at the same time it lacked much memorability. None of the tracks dragged out, which admittedly would be difficult when fitting 14 songs onto a 33 minute album. The vocals felt so flat to me on many of the tracks with weak attempts at harmonising, sticking out especially on covers like “Roll over Beethoven” which Berry sings with so much energy. Unfortunately, to me it felt like a choir boy attempt at blues/soul music and I didn’t feel the passion that we see in many of the later Beatles albums. Harrison gets a lot of hate for his song writing, however his “don’t bother me” is actually my favourite track of the album, it’s so moody compared to the rest of the album and outshines some of the John & Paul tracks like “Little Child” (I am a hater). The change in tone is refreshing compared with the surrounding, more shallow love songs and shows an early willingness to branch out from the more popular, light hearted lyrics that were loved in the 60s. Also this was George’s first song with the band, in which he essentially tells everyone to leave him alone, which I love. Although this wasn’t my favourite album I still think that it was an important foundation for the future of the Beatles, this was only their second album and they were still trying to solidify their reputation as a pop/rock group. I can see a lot of what I love about future Beatles albums starting to emerge here, experimenting with genre mixing, solid guitar, original songwriting.
I enjoyed this album! Quintessential early Beatles soooo 60s. Faves: All My Loving, Please Mister Postman, You Really Got A Hold On Me. New discoveries: All I’ve Got To Do, Don’t Bother Me Album art: Eh not my fav but I would like a sticker
Better than the beach boys, would listen again
3.4/10 top 3: • til there was you • don”t bother me • you really got a hold on me
It's good and cute but I feel like this was included on the list more for the history of it all rather than the musicality. The covers are better than the original stuff.
This album sounds soooo old, I’m surprised they aren’t all dead at this point.
honestly every song is catchy like but they deadass all sound the same
Glad I listened to this from a historical perspective but early Beatles aren't about to make it into my rotation.
I really actually dug the first half, and It Won't Be Long is a legit banger. But then it gets really kind of soppy, poppy 50s sock hop sounding and that sucks. I feel like I've heard a lot of the songs on the second half of the album, and I'm not sure if I've heard covers of these songs, or if this album is half a cover album - and I don't care enough to look it up. This isn't exactly high praise, but I'm pretty sure this is the best Beatles album. I liked it more than Revolver and Sgt. Pepper's, which I also gave 3 stars, but this one is better. Not good, mind you, but better.
3.5
This was a lot more enjoyable than I thought it was going to be. A lot higher energy. It' s not bad at all. 3/5 stars.
Cool album, All I’ve Got to Do points strongly to their quickly maturing songwriting skills
Hot take but this was not my favorite! Just not my vibe.
not my favorite, still cool album ——————————— Added to Liked Songs Playlist: — All My Loving; — Don't Bother Me; — Till There Was You; — Roll Over Beethoven; — Devil In Her Heart;
Culturally significant, although in retrospect it doesn't come close to cracking into The Beatles' top half of their own catalog. Kinda fun to think of a time when they were still covering other bands' songs while trying to gain a foothold in the industry. Definitely a must when reviewing the fab four's journey, but not one I need to put on to enjoy the actual music, which is pretty pedestrian.
Classic Beatles.... even the "helmet" hairstyle is as is to be expected of a respectable rock band.
Paua
Not the worst, revisit
Definitely not my favorite Beatles album. But a good example of the swooning teenagers and the beginning of Beatles Mania.
Classic early beatles, no es ni de sus top 5 mejores pero ya era hora que nos empiecen a salir de ellos Favs: All My Loving, Til There Was You, Devil In Her Heart
Ok but they can do much better. Not as catchy or eye opening as the other albums by them!
It’s nice listening, but as someone who went through a massive Beatles phase and listened to this album several times before, I still only recognized 3/4 songs. It’s a fine little album but a lot of their artistry obviously shines later on down the road.
It was fine but not why I like the Beatles
скукота какая-то, даже не запомнилось ничего
- Het was oké. - 0 nummers toegevoegd aan MMMM - 0 nummer al toegevoegd aan MMMM
Weird sounds, unappealing vocals, unbalanced, 3 at best
Lots of songs I knew. Enjoyed this but not my favourite of the Beatles albums so far (also got the Beatles yesterday)
Not a huge fan of early Beatles albums. I feel like they became the Beatles we know and love when they started doing drugs. This album is OK. Only one real standout song. Good production, but nothing to get excited about.
#775. There is entirely too much Beatles in this book. 3/5: fine
4 good songs and the rest is just filler.
This is Beatles before the beatles. Not really original at all. Some songs sound like covers too. The vocals on this one remind me a lot of Beach Boys and they definitely did it better. I want to give it a 3, but it’s still better than most 3s I’ve given out so, idk strong 3
It's fine, doesn't really have the same timelessness as other Beatles records
This was the only Beatles album my mom owned, or at least the only one that survived into my childhood, and for a long time, this was the music I most associated them with. I blame that for not really vibing with the Beatles until I was well into my 20s. Anyway, it's fine.
Bra men kanske inte riktigt nog för att vara på listan?
Mid beatles album
It's a pretty solid pop album. A couple of great tracks, mostly ho-hum. I suppose if I wanted to dance with or kiss the Beatles I'd enjoy this more. Also, Little Child? Weird. Very weird John.
Easy listen, some great tracks but overall nothing special. Gets quite samey the more it goes on, looking forward to some of the classic Beatles albums.
It’s the Beatles! Love them boys.
It's fine. It’s a Beatles album, although it's a bit slower than their more popular songs.
I only knew Devil in Her Heart before this, so I had the chance to really go through their second album and discover more of their early songs. This is old school pop rock Beatles. This captures the band right before they exploded worldwide. Sometimes the songs from this era blend together and sound the same for me, which makes sense since their foundation was still rooted in early ’60s rock ’n’ roll and rhythm & blues influences. You can already hear them starting to grow as musicians and gain a uniqueness in their sound. The album features six covers of classic Motown and R&B songs, Till There Was You by Sue Raney, Please Mr. Postman by The Marvelettes, Roll Over Beethoven by Chuck Berry, You Really Got a Hold on Me by The Miracles, Devil in Her Heart by The Donays, and Money (That's What I Want) by Barrett Strong. It’s got a long track list but is only about 36 minutes long, so at least everything feels short and sweet. I also really love the album cover, it gives off a different mood than the music but is very artistic and iconic. Overall, many (including myself) think that its not quite as good as their first album or their later work, and some may also say that this is their weakest album. I do prefer their later songs but I can still appreciate how important it was to shaping their sound. It’s not my favourite Beatles era, however still a great one. Favourite tracks are All my Loving, Don't Bother Me, Till There Was You, Please Mister Postman, Roll Over Beethoven, You Really Got a Hold on Me, I Wanna Be Your Man, Devil in Her Heart.
Just like another dowop kinda band at the time
It's easy to hear that this is earlier stuff. Listening to this, I would never know what they were capable of later.
I'll Send All My Lovin' To You 1001 Albums Generator 158 (11/10/2025) With The Beatles is the second album released by the Beatles and it was released when they were a popular boy band, but well before they became the most highly acclaimed band in the world. I actually think that With The Beatles is one of the worst Beatles albums, outranked by only Yellow Submarine and Beatles For Sale, but there are still some great moments here. The opening three songs are some of their best early work. It Won't Be Long is high energy and bombastic, while All I've Got To Do is kind of soulful. I love the staccato guitar part throughout the verses. Finally, All My Loving has these wonderful tremolo picked guitar chords and walking bass plus some great crooning backing vocals in the chorus. One of the complaints about the early Beatles albums is all the covers, but to be honest, some of my favorite songs here are covers. I love the almost Hispanic feel of the acoustic guitar-led Till There Was You. You Really Got A Hold On Me is one of my favorite early Beatles songs period; I just find the vocal harmonies to be gripping. Some of the songs are pretty forgettable and just overall, this is a weird choice over Magical Mystery Tour, which would absolutely be my personal choice for a seventh Beatles album over With The Beatles. Still, The Beatles' weakest output is at a certain level of quality, and there are bits of genius throughout. 3.5/5 rounded down to a 3. Favs: All My Loving Till There Was You You Really Got A Hold On Me Least Fav: I Wanna Be Your Man
It feels harsh to not give a better review for The Beatles, but I'm not a fan of either The Beatles or the era of this music. Some songs are good, others not so much. It's not their best work.
Very much of its time but to have so many self written songs was unusual in that era. As an album it's not bad but to think 3 years after this, the Beatles would release Revolver. How quickly pop music became art with the Beatles certainly heavily involved in that.
First Beatles album of the 6,000 on this list. I can't even complain though. You'd be hard pressed to make any sort of reasonable argument that there was any group, ever, that had as big of an impact on music. Now, this album in particular is pretty vanilla, and while you can see the glimmers of what they were capable of, it's mostly a run-of-the-mill 60s boy band record (albeit, they kind of invented/perfected it). It's good, but not great, and some of the covers are questionable. Looking forward to the next though. Fave tracks: - It Won't Be Long - All My Loving - Don't Bother Me - Till There Was You - Please Mister Postman - Devil In Her Heart - Money (That's What I Want)
3 stars, not great, not terrible
Mjoah, solides Beatles Album, aber definitiv nicht eines ihrer Besten
ganz nett, aber auch nicht mehr.
ganz nett, aber auch nicht mehr.
Not so much of the unique out-of-the-box innovation they'd be known for, but they were always a good band to listen to even when they were just a rock 'n' roll band from the '60s
Reminded me a lot more of The Beach Boys than their later works did. Not great, but an interesting insight into the start of a successful career. Decent: 6/10
Kinda whatever for a Beatles album. Early pop tracks with covers that don't work as well as the originals. Feels like an album they threw out there just to pump albums out.
I’m not sure why this is on the list. It’s not a bad album and it’s got John’s voice and the harmonies and some nice originals. But there’s a lot of filler and the producers have softened their sound from the debut. The remaster on streaming services and current pressings as softened it further. I like more oomph in my early Beatles.
Ringo, I have to ask: What's wrong with your face? Is it just me or does Ringo's face on the cover look weird--I mean, weirder than usual? To be fair, this is the second album released by The Beatles in 1963--on the same day John F. Kennedy was assassinated, by the way. However, "All My Loving" is the only song of note. This might be The Beatles shite era, but it was short-lived. They followed this up with A Hard Day's Night less than eight months later.
not my favorite, still cool album ——————————— Added to Liked Songs Playlist: — All My Loving; — Don't Bother Me; — Till There Was You; — Roll Over Beethoven; — Devil In Her Heart;
Yay! Beatles
Already listened Aoty score 67/100 Not terrible but pretty boring, regression from Please Please Me which wasn’t a masterpiece but had some pretty cool hits My score 60/100
Good, but feels less original than their later albums
Don't Bother Me, the George Harrison tune was the stand-out track for me. Everything else was pretty standard early Beatles, which is not a bad thing.
Different that what I expected, I guess I haven't heard much early Beatles.
It's okay for the most part. There's a few standout tracks, some annoying ones, and a weird and questionable one. Favourite Track(s): All My Loving, Till There Was You Least Favourite track(s): Little Child
I mean obviously it’s not gonna be as good as Abbey Road, but still a really strong project. You can hear a lot of what was to come, but it really isn’t much more than a demonstration of potential. Favorites: All My Loving, Please Mister Postman, Money (That’s What I Want)
I usually like the Beatles, but these are not my favorite tracks.
Wasn't in the mood for Beatles at all, but this still managed to cut through. Think that's a pretty decent compliment. After listening to the album, I felt a bit fatigued by this, though. I feel like their earlier music can be quite shouty, and this certainly fit that category. 'All My Loving' and 'Please Mister Postman' are probably the strongest songs. And I must imagine this was very fresh in 1963 when it came out, not much else probably sounded like it. But now in hindsight it falls a bit short compared to other Beatles records, and the recording sounds dated which probably contributes to the screamy feeling I had listening to it.
Interesting there are 8 covers on here and that was more common for bands around this time. Sure The Stones were similar in their earlier albums. Also, why’s Ringo down there? Here we go… I mean, the Beatles are the Beatles but not as wowed as other songs or albums and looking forward to the later ones. Stand out songs ‘All My Loving’ and ‘Postman’. Enjoyable enough but probably won’t seek it out again anytime soon (3.5)
I like the Beatles and this is an impressive album, in the sense that they’re only like 17 or whatever and they’ve got about 40000000 songs on it. Can see that the Lennon/McCartney partnership had power. But it is long, and as an album somewhat incohesive. 3.0/5.0 Best Song: All My Loving
- Beautiful music - varied, but overstayed its welcome
3.5 stars It’s the fucking Beatles. It’s hard to not compare them to themselves and by those standards some albums are lesser when in the scheme of things they’re solid. I think this album suffers from being nearly half covers and overall lesser songs for the band, although the sound and energy for the time was clearly transformative for the genre. It’s not at the top of my list of Beatles records one must listen to, but it’s still a good listen.
I generally like the Beatles, but this album was bordering on bad. There are very few good songs on this one and it was balancing on the knife's edge of a 2.5 rating. In the end I nudged it up to a 3 rather than down to a 2, because while I didn't like it per se, I didn't outright dislike it. The overall rating is the "it's the Beatles so it must be good" effect.
Early work by some lads who'll go on to make a name for themselves. When you're "with the Beatles" (then), I don't think you can imagine where the road will take them, but you can already hear a few hallmarks of their sound.
If this were as far as the Beatles developed, I'd not really care. There are a couple great songs-- All My Lovin'; Money; but they haven't acheived their "sound" yet. So glad the fab four and their team kept at it. 3/5
Quite classic! Although timeless, not the best production.
Obviously good because the Beatles but fairly nondescript as their albums go
4.5/10
All the Beatles albums are good
3/5
meh
Well, they’re the Beatles, so this doesn’t suck. But I like their later works much better. I think this is a classic example of having to pay the bills (literally and figuratively) in order to earn the artistic license to get away from cheesy pop songs and sadly being the prototype for all “boy bands” that followed.
Early Beatles is always "meh" for me. For the time, sure, I can believe they were different. But the bubblegum lyrics on a lot of it is just not my bag, baby. Some of the bluesier stuff was pretty good though. Also didn't know they did covers. 3.5*. Didn't hate it, for sure and enjoyed some of it. Unlikely to ever seek it out again, though.
Didn’t finish, looking forward to their later work. They all sound too similar to me and I don’t feel the album progression. Finished it and it’s fine
Beatles ei ole koskaan iskenyt minuun ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Early Beatles is not bad
It’s fun. It’s fine. Too many mediocre covers
John Lennon was 23 when With The Beatles came out. Paul McCartney was 21. Beatlemania was in full swing and fab four were already worn thin on their second album. There are fourteen songs, but only seven Lennon-McCartney tunes. Only "All My Loving" appears on the Beatles' "Red Album," 1962-1966. So I do not see this album as especially enduring. Incidentally, With The Beatles was released the same day that John F. Kennedy was assassinated.
covers. beatles.
Like a lot of bands in this era these albums had a lot of covers mixed with some original songs. You can see how their sound was developing and the take they had on these tracks. Enjoyable second album.
This sounds very of its time, to the point it is a bit dated, compared to later Beatles tracks which sound ageless (even if I wouldn’t be a fan of them, necessarily). I think it says a lot that I prefer the covers to the original compositions, maybe because it doesn’t have any George Harrison originals?
this album is sandwiched between two of my favorite beatles albums so ngl it makes it a little underwhelming.
funny little british fellas with edgar cuts
On the album sleeve they admitted that they repeated the hit formula of "Please please me". And it shows: The album is a bit formulaic. Sure the energy is great and there are a few great tracks (It won't be long, Till There Was You), but overall a bit dull.
I will never understand why there were so big. The first half of the record with their songs are bright and spangly and fun, but not unlike what you'd expect from any 60's pop record. The second half with the covers is extremely underwhelming and lacking in the soul and intensity of the originals. At least they had Ringo to stop it being boring!
Might be the worst beatles album, but that's saying a lot as it is still almost a 3.5
What's not to like?
Fine? I’m not a Beatles guy and the album I found on Spotify was mixed such that the right ear was all vocals and the left ear was all instruments so it sounded super wonky with headphones. Probably better listen with speakers.
A bit bland, but not bad
Album sympa que je connaissais déjà, mais clairement pas le meilleur album des Beatles.
It’s fine. 2.75
I love The Beatles, but this isn't one of their best records. It has some classics on it however. Very textbook early mop-top Ed Sullivan Beatles here though I prefer Please Please Me. Not to mention they're still doing a majority of covers rather than originals, and let me tell you, the Lennon-McCartney originals are superior (6/10, 3/5 on this scale)
Fine enough, some classics - probably remarkable for the time
Typical, I know, but I looove post-‘66 Beatles and am much more hit and miss on early-career Beatles. I typically don’t get into the early ‘60s rock n’ roll anyway, but now that I’ve listened to more records from that era, I can pick out the little qualities that made the Beatles stand out. They did have a little more of an edge and a force than their peers did, and that’s audible on this record. Some good tunes on here, but I probably won’t revisit it in full anytime soon. It’s only really a must-listen if you’re digging into the whole Beatles oeuvre.
One or two gems, but clearly not their best album.
The Beatles are fine
Lacking the character that other early British invasion has and the technical skill that comes with later British invasion music. Not terrible, but not fantastic. Pretty unobtrusive, but that's not a good thing all the time.
Spero che i Beatles siano finiti...
tha beatle
This lot will never amount to anything
On pure enjoyability, it's probably a low 4, but the best songs on the album aren't Beatles songs, and they're generally worse than the original.
I never did like scousers
I suppose that this is the archetypal "Difficult Second Album". After their original went thermonuclear, the four guys we bundled back into the studio to capitalise on their success. And, a not so great collection of original tunes, and some quick, by-the-books, cover versions were rushed out. It's still enjoyable, but ... it pales in comparison. "Don't Bother Me" is the stand-out track, IMHO, but album cover aside, there's nothing truly great here.
If this was the only Beatles album I feel like you'd never hear of them too much but it's solid at what it's doing. Easy to listen to, hits the beats.
This is a solidly constructed album and more cohesive than some of the later ones, but it's a bit basic. A well calculated product for the time I'm sure. The cover songs don't quite live up to the originals, but they do a fine job.
маловато пронзительных хитов (ол май лавин! woo!) и многовато ремейков, не мой любимый
A few great songs, but it has its fair share of mediocre ones too. Would benefit from a remix to bring down the cymbals.
3.25/5
I mean it's The Beatles. They have a basic quality floor. But this album didn't surprise me with anything other than "huh The Beatles have a version of this?" on a couple tracks. 3/5.
I was pretty surprised at the number of covers in there, six! Overall pleasant to listen to, not their most influential stuff yet. 3.5
Not bad.
big 3
Everyone knows the sound of The Beatles' early Merseybeat records. The sound of US Rock and Roll and Rhythm and Blues can be heard throughout, particularly on the intricate and clever vocal harmonies. This is even more obvious with some of the cover choices (Please Mr Postman, Roll Over Beethoven). The music is stripped back in terms of instrumentation, keeping the vocals at the forefront. As a side note: some of the mixing choices on this remastered weren't great; panning the vocals completely to the right channel on some songs felt odd, almost distracting. Not my favourite era of the band, they are emulating a sound rather then their later more creative output but the vocals are crisp and enjoyable.
Irrelevant band
till there was you 💗💗💗😽😽😽 3.5
Not bad. Brief but flowed well. 3/5
Such a funny album to be here cause like yes, it's the Beatles so of course it's good and iconic but I don't honestly think that a single person on the planet would say that this is the best Beatles album out there. In fact, it's probably the worst, but it's still the Beatles so... 6/10
Standouts All My Loving Til There Was You Please Mr Postman Roll Over Beethoven You Really Got a Hold on Me Money
There some interesting songs here but the covers are stronger than a lot of the original songs. Which I don't think bodes that well?
i don't think this will be my favorite beatles album, but this one really pops off in the second half after "roll over beethoven". have to respect it, didn't know you could shake ass to the beatles like that.
This was a fun early album. You can really hear how The Beatlea progressed musically in future albums. Good listen.
Lovely album, but not a masterpiece. Still enjoyed it.
I'm sorry but I was quite bored through most of this 😭 It's not terrible, but it's not great either. Highlights: All My Loving, It Won't Be Long
It was just a bit meh Fav song: all my loving
Seemed like a lot of covers. Underwhelming, considering how strong most of their music is.
This is the good old Beatles, back to where it started. I like this stuff a little more than when they start to get weird. It's crazy how many bands in the early 1900s walked so the Beatles could run on their first few albums, and then how many bands exploded because of the Beatles and you can really hear that on this album. With The Beatles is a fun listen, quick, and full of jams. There are a couple hits here and a fair bit of more forgettable songs. It is a good album to just play through in its entirety though. It's a bit formulaic for the time period and has a lot of harmonies and catchy guitar riffs and hooks that just make it a good time, even if not a particularly novel one. Standouts for me are "It Won't Be Long" "Please Mister Postman" and "Roll Over Beethoven" I do think this is one of the Beatles weaker albums, and it's still going to come in at a 3 for me. There are only a couple of songs to really keep coming back to here, but in the moment it's pretty solid!
Nothing really special about this one, a lot of covers. Seems like this was only released to capitalize off Beatlemania
Not for me, not huge on the Beatles. It's easy to listen to. For being their second release - they're starting to sound more polished. I am not too into the covers, but they're not terrible. Although the Roll Over Beethoven cover is played about as well as I can play it, and that's not great.
It's The Beatles. Good, but far from hitting their peak.
Vroege Beatles. Qua muziek en samenzang gewoon heel goed. Wat leuke aanstekende muziekjes, maar beetje simpel. Hoogtepunten: Please mr Postman Roll over Beethoven
Favorite songs: Roll Over Beethoven, Please Mister Postman, Money (That's What I Want), Little Child, All I've Got To Do Least favorite songs: Not a Second Time 3/5
Even though this isn’t the quintessential Beatles album, every song in here made me want to sing along, even when I heard it for the first time. However, I’d say it’s not as good as other albums in the same spirit (anything by the Kinks)… Favorites: - It won’t be long - All my loving - Hold me tight
Wasn’t particularly special? I liked a few songs and the whole album was good but there wasn’t anything that stood out to me
I have listened to this album. Discovered when I was 19
Half covers. Few memorable originals. Not the Beatles era I love. 14 lovely perfectly sappy early 60s pop songs from their boy band era.
I definitely prefer later, post-touring beatles. This album has some good songs on it, but many are not so good and sound similar to other songs.
Can’t believe this is the same band that made Revolver. Good for the time and place but nothing like what they would become.
Can't really say anything bad about a foundational album for modern rock.
*1963 - second studio album. *I liked a lot of this. *Simple lyrics and melodies for the most part, with some cool bits thrown in. *Not the bubble gum pop Beatles and not the drug-fueled, introspective stuff either. RATING - 7/10
Favorite tracks: All my loving Heard before: N/A 3
Lots of short songs Not bad
I get that the Beatles are THE BEATLES, but this is such an also-ran album from them. 2.5
6/10 You can hear their talent for songwriting even if the result isnt quite as timeless as their later work Highlight: It Wont be Long
It’s an okay album. Probably on the list to compare to what the Beatles eventually became. Not as many hit songs and much of is pretty average. 3/5 Might listen again
I really like the post-LSD Beatles. I can appreciate the pre-LSD Beatles for their mark on pop-culture, but the music just doesn't do it for me. Gonna save a few stars for one of their later albums.
Too doo-oppy for me. I mean I get that it's the Beatles but all the beats sounded the same, like they were running with the beach vibes and never looked back.
It took to album #20 to get to my first Beatles album. With this being the first, I'm very surprised that one of the their weakest albums in their discography made this list. Don't get me wrong, I'm not one of those people who will say that "The Beatles are overrated" (I'm a big fan of them), but this album can be a bit uninspiring to listen to considering the rest of their work especially in their later years. I just feel this is one of those 50s-60s albums that has a lot of filler with just one single to make it standout from the rest. As much as I love this band and the work they did, this album really is just something I don't care about too much. But hey, in my opinion, even the worst from the Beatles isn't bottom of the pit for me. Favorite Tracks: It Won't Be Long, All My Loving, Roll Over Beethoven Rating: 3/5
elämän riemua täynnä oleva beatles albumi
3.5
I love the Beatles and grew up (in the 90’s) listening to all of their music. I think this record is the one time has been most unkind to. There’s not a ton of growth from Please Please Me compared to their meteoric growth soon after this, and while the songs are well performed there’s not much to take away here 60+ years after Beatlemania. I’d probably rank it at the bottom of the Beatles discography.
3/5
Maybe it's because this was my second Beatles album in a row, but this one didn't hit as hard as Hard Day's Night for me. Still solid Beatles music, albeit a little older style. Some songs on here I didn't remember being related to The Beatles like "Money (That's What I Want)" and "Please Mister Postman". This does have a lot of the songs from the 2000s movie Across the Universe and it made me want to go back and rewatch that since it's been a while, so it wasn't all for nothing!
Of all the great Beatles albums that could make the list, they include the one with only one hit song, and 6 cover songs? I mean it's good, it's the Beatles, but give me an album that is entirely written by the Beatles.
3.5
Nice early Beatles. No desire to listen to again
This album seems like it was rushed out by the record execs to capitalize on the Beatles’ fame at the time. Too many lackluster covers, pretty forgettable.
I love the Beatles but this isn't an exceptional album and didn't need to be part of this project. Meet the Beatles would've been a better choice to highlight their early work.
here we go, something to talk about that's BEEN talked to death about. this one is up there for me in their career. Beatles go covers, to a transition, to a high point, and then off the deep end. this is a combo of those early days and then moving somewhere no one has ever been before. while the covers are a sticking point, (are they better versions? no. do they bring attention to the original artist TODAY? yes. BACK THEN? no) there is enough of their own songs to prove they are more than ears for good music. All My Loving stands as one of their most played songs. That alone sets their status to greatest of all time. but then you have genius Harrison putting out bangers like Don't Bother Me, showing clearly the trajectory that was about to occur. It Won't Be Long is a bold start. I'm not really gunna talk about the covers, they speak for themselves but i don't consider them Beatles songs. Little Child is fun, even if no one likes it. there is history here like they wrote I Wanna Be Your Man but then the Stones did it and then they recorded it, so who's is it really? as of this review, these songs have basically been conditioned, so there is a numbness to the billionth listening. but lesser known jams like Not a Second Chance show exactly which member has what style. after listening through this time, i do admit its really not that impressive as the hype builds up. its the start of their meteoric rise that is present here. punk, modern rock, and metal are basically starting right here. 3/5 the next 3 and half records after this are pret much 5's.
Yes, the Beatles are the biggest band of all time and for good reason, but this album wasn't an amazing record for me. The good: There’s actually a lot of diversity in the sound of a lot of these songs, at least more than I expected at this stage in their careers. And that sound is really quite great, if we look at these songs through the lens of the time in which they were written. Also, they are excellent singers and the songs are generally fun and catchy. The bad: Where there wasn't diversity? The theming. I'm going to get the girl, I am going to call the girl, I'm going to kiss/love the girl, I've lost the girl, the girl is far away, I'm with the girl . . . even where's my letter from my girl? We were halfway through the album before something different finally came on with Roll Over Beethoven. Oh and then right back to the girl: please hold me, she has a hold on me, I want to be with her, she loves me but she's the devil, I'm not giving her another chance. Mercifully, a song about money to close the album. Sure, not the greatest theme ever - I just want money - but at least it wasn't being used to get a girl! This will undoubtedly be well rated because it is the Beatles, but this really didn't get a hold on me (yes, I did just bend one of their songs). It's good, but not great.
The great thing with the Beatles is that you can put any album and have a good time. From moment one, you just want to party with them, and make no mistake, you are invited. Paul and John's voice comes through powerfully--is it a wonder that the entire western world was seduced by these guys? This being said, the music does feel dated--it doesn't have the timeless quality of the later Beatles. We clearly hear that this was made in the 60s, especially with songs like Little Child. Later, you have a couple of covers of popular songs that get Beatle-ized. They're pleasant, but nothing spectacular (Mister Postman is great though). And then, out of nowhere, you get tracks like Till There Was You whose instrumentation sounds almost like a classical Spanish love song. So in this album, the depth comes and goes, but the potential is always there and when it's fulfilled, it hits you like nothing else. Unfortunately, the album seems front loaded, with the back half being much less impressive--you'll only like it as far as you already appreciate 60s rock.
5/10 Favourite: Don't Bother Me Least Favourite: Little Child
Early Beatles, a big hit with All My Loving. Half the songs sounded exactly like I Want to Hold Your Hand, which was a little uncanny, so I guess this album is a precursor to that one peculiar song.
Easily the Beatles album I like the least, but there's still a few great tracks on it. I really don't know why anyone would pick this one for an essential listening though.
It's the worst The Beatles can do, but it's still pretty good. That says something!
I don't know why it's on this list as it's not even a top 10 Beatles record. That said, I still love this album so much. It Won't Be Long, All My Loving, Don't Bother Me... There are nice cuts in it.
Had I been a young men in the 60's, I'd have fracassed myself on this but... Meh
You know, I honestly haven't listened to this one before, surprisingly. I know a couple songs off it (All My Loving and I Wanna Be Your Man, both classics), but the rest of the tracklist feels kinda pedestrian, especially for The Beatles. It's good, but nothing really special. Kinda derivative of other artists at the time (Elvis, Chuck Berry, etc.). Obviously, they'd go on to make much better, and interesting music. But as it stands, this album is just OK. If ever there was a Beatles record to drop from the list, this one could definitely be in the running. Even during this era of The Beatles they had much better material.
kinda beatless
Yeah this was fine in an early Beatles kind of way. I already had a soft spot for some of the songs. I associate All My Loving with a weird period in 2017 when I was in Liverpool for a bit and had really bad insomnia. That’s it really.
Beatles have never been my cup of tea, but could see the appeal to the pop demographic.
Middle of the road tracks, but easy to listen to i guess. You Really Got a Hold On Me is my favorite. Money is the worst.
Classic music. You can really see why they were the quintessential band back in the day.
I’m far from a Beatles fan. I like a few of their songs and definitely respect what they did for music, but their style just isn’t really my thing. That said, With The Beatles has its moments. You can hear the energy and charm that made them so influential, even if it doesn’t fully land for me personally. It's a solid early snapshot of a band that would go on to shape music history, just not an album I’ll return to.
So happy to have something listenable vs some of the junk I’ve gotten lately. That said, it’s not the Beatles best of course. But All My Loving is classic McCartney. 3.5 stars, but 4 feels too generous so I’ll round down.
I mean it's the Beatles, so it's going to be good. This album didn't really resonate with me overall though.
Beatles have never been my favorite. I know they’re popular and everything, doesn’t change the fact.
It's The Beatles, it's obviously good. I'm not big on this era of them, but it's better than 99% of the pop music of the time. "All My Loving" is the standout for me, as that always gets in my head for days after hearing it. "Don't Bother Me" is also interesting as a George song. I'm not as interested in the covers like "Please Mister Postman" or "Roll Over Beethoven" but they are certainly good. That's kind of how I feel about the album overall: it's good, but not very remarkable, especially in the context of the Beatles' catalog. I really disliked the stereo 2009 remaster of this. The hard-panning left and right is absurd and unlistenable with headphones. It wasn't until I found a mono mix on YouTube that I could really sit down and listen to the album in full.
This is not the best of the Beatles I did not know these songs
Songs were solid and enjoyable, but it’s early Beatles, so it’s not going to be as good as their later material. Also not really a fan of how the instruments are like 80% in my left ear
The earlier pop Beatles songs I don’t care for as much as the more complex and varied albums of the later 60s. It’s not bad, plenty of good musical elements. A little repetitive.
more of an late-stage Beatles fan personally
My main thing is about money (thats what I want) this is an all time classic and the theme song to one of my favourite shows (brassic) but don’t go for the beatles version. If it were in modern times I think this would’ve been merged with please please me and some of the best older singles (e.g. she loves you and I want to hold your hand) and it would be a classic than the majority of the covers would be nifty bonus tracks. But this was the 60’s and I don’t hate this whatsoever, but please please me would’ve been the better early beatles pick 3/5
Probably their worst album other than Yellow Submarine. Still 3 stars easily.
The panning on headphones was a little much but it was good.
Probably my favorite album of theirs so far. It's not great but that's an improvement. Still, it's pretty generic stuff.
Pretty good. Not the best Beatles album I've heard.
Beatles early days, when they were pop heavy. Not bad, but I don't listen to the Beatles for their early stuff.
I've always really enjoyed "wait Mr Postman" and "All my Loving." This album is a generally pleasant listen but overall is not too interesting, some of the songs towards the end are pretty saccharine
Classic and dated
