Reviews (page 11 of 14)
Haven’t really heard the earlier Beatles before. Short and upbeat, quite funky, but I do prefer the later stuff. Maybe I’m just more familiar with it. I’ll give this another listen sometime to see if my opinion changes though. Highlights: It Won’t Be Long Please Mister Postman Roll Over Beethoven
***a good easy listening album
Lennon first and now the Beatles?! It’s a fine album - just a little juvenile (for me and clearly for the Beatles as their second album). I remember liking the songs from this album as a freshman/sophomore. The sweet lyrics and swingy/poppy beats were all I needed but just doesn’t scratch my musical itch anymore. Favorite Song: All My Loving Least Favorite Song: I Wanna Be Your Man Familiar with the album beforehand? Yes
This is like the weird middle child of the Beatles, which is weird considering it's their second album. They did a lot more interesting stuff on A Hard Day's Night and Please Please Me, but this one sort of blends in along with Beatles For Sale. It's still the Beatles so it's not bad, they can just do so much better. Favorites are All My Loving, Till There Was You, Please Mister Postman, and You Really Got a Hold On Me
Not bad
Not my favorite era of The Beatles, but Don't Bother Me has some hint of what they could become. It Won't Be Long - Not bad All I've Got To Do - Ok All My Loving - Ok. Chorus is good. Don't Bother Me - Nice groove Little Child - Not for me Till There Was You - Not a bad cover Please Mister Postman - More covers Roll Over Beethoven - Better cover Hold Me Tight - Not bad You Really Got A Hold On Me - And another cover. Only ok. I Wanna Be Your Man - Ok, kinda catchy. Devil In Her Heart - Ok, but another cover Not A Second Time - Ok I guess Money (That's What I Want) - Another cover but I like this song Why are the songs so short? Also the cover: We don't have room for Ringo so I guess just put him down in the corner.
Not as good as their first album but pretty good. B
This album by itself is kind of basic. There are a few covers of some classic songs, and the original songs by the Beatles don't exactly push the envelope. Standard early sixties renditions, and nothing like what they would be known for later in the sixties. But you can also see early hints of genius, like with how serenely McCartney sang "Till There Was You" or Harrison's lyrics in "Don't Bother Me." I was also thinking about how much the Beatles changed the face of music for decades to come. The Rolling Stones and Beatles originally focused primarily on covers, following the paths set by others, but branched out and crafted music themselves as they explored creativity. Like I said, this album is basic, but it's a clear stepping stone for their careers and it impacted the trajectory of the music business, too.
The Beatles are one of few bands that I feel like have earned so many spots on this project, as many of their albums just raise the bar time after time and are musically significant. All that said, in terms of this project, I would argue that this album is maybe the most unnecessary Beatles inclusion. Is it okay musically? Yes, sure. But is it musically significant enough to be included on this project? Meh. Sure, they were a sensation from the very beginning (this album makes me wonder how if I'm being completely honest), but their album significance did not start or continue here, in my opinion. And I honestly was not aware that they had an album (let alone multiple albums) where half of the album was covers. All in all, you can see hints of who The Beatles would become peaking out in certain songs, but overall, the album is not quite at that level yet. An okay album, but I definitely feel like it wouldn't be on here if it weren't The Beatles.
Sounds ok and competent (especially the Please Mister Postman cover) but I always get bored when listening to this album. It is just like as with that very early Rolling Stones album from last month or so: why is this on the list other than historical reasons? The album is by no means any special.
In 2024, this pile of covers isn’t very impressive. I get that on a basic level as white dudes at the time, they’re making these tunes their own in a way. We do hear the genius that is to come in the first four tunes. But in the big scheme of things not an exceptional album IMHO.
It’s quality for being what it is. Still really heavily blues influenced and nothing particularly innovative happening yet here, but it’s kind of nice to listen to a beatles album that doesn’t have 6 or 7 songs the radio has milked dry.
Very nostalgic but not my era of beatles
3.5☆/5 07.28.2024
Early Beatles album. Slightly lame at times.
It’s not the best Beatles offering by far. It’s fine, there’s lots of staple rock n roll tracks, but this is a band still doing the basics to get themselves known. It’s competent but not impressive.
65/100
I've never been the biggest fan of early Beatles. And I think this may be the weakest album in their discography. Certainly not bad by any means, but doesn't really have any standout tracks or memorable moments like the rest of their albums do. Would only really come back to if I was doing a Beatles binge or something similar. Top tracks: All My Loving, Don't Bother Me, Roll Over Beethoven
Beatles if they were mid
some gems
Not my favorite Beatles album, but there are some classics here
Decent , I feel they are still finding their sound with this album. Will come back someday.
Hengettömiä covervetoja, 2.5
Pretty alright
First listen Saved 6/14 Top track: Don't Bother Me
First Beatles actually. Didn’t hate it.
high highs, lower lows, 3/5
I like other albums of theirs better
Decent.
3/5 - still not my thing. I get it, I do. But nope.
ok
At times I felt it would work perfectly for a sunny summer morning, sipping tea and feeling all of your problems melt away... ...and then at other times I wanted to jab something down my throat. How they ever got THAT famous is beyond me. They couldn't even write half their own songs on here. I will say, though: they knew when to put an album out of its misery.
Day 13 - June 14, 2024 Meeesta Postman. Roll Over Beethoven was good, but ELO's is better. Sorry not sorry. 3/5
i like this era of the beatles best but i don’t like the beatles. if i were being honest i would probably rate this 4 but i can’t bear to do it. please mister postman was my favorite cause it made me think of that one vine. what can i say. it’s good, it’s fine. i don’t want to listen to six more beatles albums.
decent album filled with originals and covers.
Iterate through the classics
The Beatles again…. Why are there so many on here?? I liked a lot of these songs though
These albums sound so weird in stereo
Notable tracks: Till There Was You, You Really Got A Hold On Me
It bothers me that this website just calls the band “Beatles” without “The”
Not the record you think of particularly As a classic Beatles album, Hard Day's Night is the obvious classic of the early period. But it's kinda necessary to include this representative of The Beatles as they find their footing. Some of the covers are exceptional. There's a few average tracks here though for sure. Hard to rate. Obviously not a 5, probably a low 4. Nah, forget that. Following this listen, being brutally honest it's all pretty average bar All my Lovin, Postman and Money are the covers that really pass muster, the others are just ok. Besides that it's a fun listen, but if it wasn't The Beatles this for sure wouldn't be here. Warrants a middling ranking.
Early Beatles are delightful, but half of the delight is knowing how different they’ll sound in just a few years. That said, George Harrison’s intro on Roll Over Beethoven is kinda terrible. And I was surprised there were so many covers. I wonder if musical copyrights didn’t come about until later? Of the original songs, All My Loving is a standout. Great song. Not a fave album by any means, but still noteworthy. 3.6
This was fine, but definitely not my favorite Beatles album.
Basic Boy Band Beatles. Not their best. But a few large early hits. 3.75
It’s not a bad album. But it’s far from their greatest. This album sounds rushed. And when I was looking up the history of this record, it seems like the writing and recording was squeezed between a massive amount of live appearances and broadcast obligations.. The production choice to put the vocals in the right channel and the instruments in the left channel too much of the sloppiness that the band exhibited in the sessions. The fact that there are cover songs here as well as what we might call transitional Beatles pieces means that the record is somewhat disjointed, but I can see how it might be a reflection of their live appearances at the time. So, we’re definitely with the Beatles here, but we’re not completely consumed by them yet.
noooot a fan which is weird because i usually love the beatles. i think their later works are masterpieces but noooowww it’s like mmm you’re still babies ykwim.
Wasn't their best showing
cool, don't see myself listening to it again
just lost my Beatles album virginity
Ok
great first try, boys! oh, this was their second album? well, nevertheless,
till there was you is my fave <3
Took them a while to get good...
Pretty good. Obviously doesn't get near their best, but Til There Was You is a sweet little song.
Quite good. Easy to see how they became so famous. The relentlessly romantic themes are a real grind, but the skillful performance through a broad range of sounds makes listening worthwhile.
Some early classics on this one. I was surprised how many covers were on here. A preview of the greatness to come.
"With The Beatles" is the second studio album by The Beatles, originally released in 1963 on Parlophone Records. The album was released as a debut under a different name in the US ("Meet The Beatles") along with a different tracklist. The Beatles had already become a household name in the UK and were well on their way to becoming one in the US around this time. Because of this, the label required them to record and release more than 1 LP a year to cash in on the success, and it shows on this record. It's almost evenly split half-and-half with covers and originals. The originals are ok, but the covers are mostly lackluster. They're covering motown and early rock & roll, and these covers just don't hit the same. The compositions are ok, they're just lacking that extra energy.
Beatles. oder wie andere schrieben: „beim ganzen hören dann doch etwas limitiert.“ - yep, passt! 😎
An enjoyable listen but really musically its not pulling up any trees nowadays.
some bangers' and nostalgic bits but i cant see myself ranking this above a 3.
Favourite cover: Money (That’s What I Want) Favourite Original: All My Loving
Pretty good album but when compared to other beatles projects, you can feel the immaturity and lack of depth on this one
Not a huge fan of early Beatles
i would probably rank higher if i was born before the 50’s.
14 songs in 33 mins is kind of cap. But i enjoyed some of the songs. I kind of agree with ben that early Beatles are not as meta as later on but I didn’t hate it. Was not expecting the Mr Postman cover lol
Not my fav Beatles but I still enjoyed a lot !! Luv the vocals! Can imagine loving this back in day Standouts: I wanna be your man, you really got a hold on me, please mister postman
3.5/5 - I thought I disliked the Beatles.... consider my ignorant self proven wrong Standout tracks (I fell in love with both instantly): - It won't be long 5/5 - All I've got to do 5/5
There was something so clean cut and young about this album. I don't know if I enjoyed the motown covers. They just didn't have the same energy and passion as the originals. I didn't really feel like they were pleading with the mailman for their letter, but maybe they were in the British culture. I liked the original songs on the album.
I lean towards later era Beatles, but this was a happy, old-timey vibe and the covers were a fun addition.
Subjectively one of the weakest Beatles albums, inferior to it's predecessor, "Please Please Me." Not even the Beatles are foolproof. I'll give credit when credit's due. "With The Beatles" has got a few good numbers, namely "All My Loving" and "Till There Was You." The second half was a boresome listen. There was not one redeeming track. The people who rate this five stars are gaslighting themselves.
For me, the Beatles are a band that never seems to have problems with musical quality, but rather with quality of content. Most of the songs are good to listen to, but absolutely irrelevant, and I don't buy that the band feels any different, which gives the feeling of inauthenticity. I expected that the early Beatles offered more ups and downs. Absolute rivets and quirky hidden gems, that you feel are somehow unrefined, but authentic. This album proves the opposite. Completely ironed and aimed for commercial success, with the most generic and bland lyrics revolving about "love". Not exciting. Radio music. But I'd like to think that I only feel that way because the Beatles shaped the mainstream so much with their unique style and that it was revolutionary new hot shit at the time.
Though they wear their influences conspicuously with classic RnB and rock and roll covers and a brash surf sound, you can start to see the emergence of their more complex pop song writing to come. But this is them still in full teenybopper mode, jangly and sweet upbeat love songs with a funny playful side. They mastered the genre though, these songs are nearly all pretty perfectly crafted little gems and the recordings are brimming with energy.
There are some decent songs on this album, but there are also some rather poor ones too. I would probably like this album more if The Beatles hadn’t grown as much as songwriters after this.
I guess this is what made the Beatles popular, but it isn't what made the Beatles pioneers and icons.
I don’t think this should be on the list. I’m not saying it’s bad, but it’s not a consequential Beatles album compared to their others on the list. Removal of this one would lead to room for deserving entries from other unrepresented artists.
Not much to say tbh, not my cup of tea but pleasant enough Favorite song: Til there was you (cover) 5/10
The most Beatles Beatles album (yes Beatles is used as an adjective) but my least favorite of the three). Not terrible but a bit too on the nose
The vocals are good. It was... Fine. It's got a 50s diner vibe which I enjoy. The songs did blend together a bit. Top songs: Please Mister postman
Still good but not as exciting as other Beatles albums!
3.5 I was just thinking a few days ago that I was almost 100 days into this project and had yet to have a Beatles album and somehow, lo and behold, the next day I got one! One of the least essential Beatles albums, tbf, but a Beatles album nonetheless. Listen - I love the Beatles, probably most of their other albums are going to get 5 stars, and even this isn’t bad per se. It can’t be, with the lovely lads from Liverpool singing and playing. It’s just, other than the iconic cover, what does this really have going for it? A couple classic songs up front, then most of the rest of the album is (good) covers! It’s not the most exciting or necessary work from them. But it’s the Beatles, and there’s some classic tunes on it, so it’s still getting above 3 stars from me.
It's the Beatles. Never got into them, never really found them as ground-breaking as everyone else seems to. It's fine, but won't be going back to this.
Honestly as much as I love The Beatles this album just doesn't really do it for me
3,3
featuring none of the songs you associate with the beatles
could i write poetry to this? n
Pretty good album. Even though it´s old album, i found it catchy and simply fun. Vocals were great, instrumantation too, but you can really hear it´s a 60´s record. Probably wouldn´t skip it if a song from this album came in while driving or something, but not for an active listen. Although I can see why The Beatles were so popular even early on in their career. Pretty good record, but not for me.
This was a nice listen. But I can’t give an album with this many covers a very high score. Especially when the black artists they’re ripping off do it better.
Biggest complaint about the album is the mixing, when the vocals are in just one ear for a good portion of the time it gets hard to listen to, would easily be 4 stars otherwise.
Classic. Set the stage for... for... forever.
Better than expected.
relisten. im not the biggest fan of the early Beatles, i much prefer their albums from the late 60s but this one is very pleasant .
Well made and great harmonies and catchiness.
A wild mix of classic hits, covers of soul and blues standards, and forgettable sugary pop songs. A respectable debut album from the goats with parts that unfortunately did not stand the test of time.
Every Beatles album is at least baseline good and easy enough to get through front to back, but this is on the weaker end of their catalogue.
Nostalgically quaint
I think I would’ve been a big fan back in the day
They don’t make bad songs, but they’ve made much better.
Meh
not into this flavor of beatle
Not a bad album from the Beatles. I wouldn't call it their best, but it's far from their worst. 3.5/5
Beatles album I haven't listened to yet. Thoroughly enjoyed.
Not my taste
ein paar Klassiker - aber eigentlich nicht meine Musik
Maybe not so bad
Aside from the mix being kinda terrible, It's the Beatles, so its good. They hadn't hit their creative peaks yet but as pop songs go, these are fine songs.
Studio versions don't do justice to what a great live band they were at this point: listen to live versions of Money; All My Loving; etc., and you'll see the difference. The least good Beatles album.
Cute
The was fine except I think they had the singers standing outside the room and they put the guitar Right On The Mic
Instrumentation was great, individual song lyrics were okay. But when you have to listen to basically the same song lyrics wise even the short runtime becomes taxing to get through.
It's... Beatles. Other people love this, I know this, but I don't understand the hold they have. A nitpick: this album seemed to be from the dawn of the stereo era and they're really EMPHASIZING it with wild unnecessary panning on all tracks. Almost stopped to find a mono version.
oh hey it's the Across the Universe soundtrack but by all dudes playing with stereo sound look, it's fine, some songs are fun, but it's almost tiresome to listen to The Beatles for this. I know most of their music and they're on every music list ever
Mid
Weird to hear so many covers by the Beatles who were absolute masters at writing their own music. Best song is "All My Loving." It's a little unpolished but undeniably fun. While I enjoyed this, since almost half of the songs were covers, I am only awarding 3 stars.
Fun happy album. Didn’t really resonate with me
I kind of like Don’t Bother Me and Roll Over Beethoven
I'm just happy the Beatles got better
I prefer the Beatles on psychedelics🙃 2,5!
Loved this when I first got into them in my teens (not thaaat long ago, honest). Me then would say 5/5 however the grown up cynic in me hears this differently. Perfectly serviceable but had forgotten how many covers there are on the album. Good clean fun for the hit parade but (and I feel bad for saying this) sweet but slightly bland. 3.5.
3.4 stars rounded down. "All my loving" and "Money (That's What I Want)" are the standout tracks.
It’s was good, not my style
Ehhh
Can't understand the Hype around Beatles. But might have been great at the time of release
Not my fave Beatle album
Interesting to hear as it's definitely a product of the times
The era of The Beatles I don't care for but still a quality record none the less.
This is not a Beatles album that I've heard before. It was quite interesting, I feel like I could hear the seeds being sewn for albums to come. Funnily enough, I have heard their first album "Please Please Me" before and there are a few tracks on that I really like. All in all, I don't think it's as good as their first and I don't think it's as good as later records. It's okay
Any Beatles is practically oxygen at this point, but while I enjoyed to now retrospective power-pop sound, alot of it was remarkably forgettable. "All My Loving" is a stone classic, and I like "I Wanna Be Your Man" a lot, the rest just sort of just became "Beatles sound". Certainly, not indicative of the riches to come.
The early Beatles albums are not half as good as the later mature ones like the brilliant White Album or Sgt Peppers. If other bands would have made this album, by now we would maybe have forgotten about this one. Not best version of e.g. Mr Postman or Roll over Beethoven. Do like Money though. 3 stars enough
Really short songs. Hard to find a memorable one
I haven't spent much time with the early Beatles. I think Rubber Soul is about as early as I have listened. First impressions are that, these definitely sound like the Beatles that I know, but the cuts are definitely rougher and the songs are more direct pop-rock in structure -- less experimental. Don't Bother Me is one that I like more than the rest so far. Has an almost surf-rock vibe about it with a lived-in atmosphere to the production. I've heard other versions of Please Mister Postman. This one has the early RnR sway about it with beautiful harmonies. Roll Over Beethoven is another cover that does fine service to a classic. Straight through, this is a fine enough album, but ultimately pretty forgettable. There aren't really any "stand out" singles that commanded my attention, and a lot of the songs washed together. Even so, the production is quality and you can see this as a less evolved version of a band that would go on to change music. For me this is a 3.5 leaning 3.
A fine enough album but not even close to a top Beatles album for me. There were no low points at all, just a pleasant 33 minute listen
Всем группам на свете хотелось бы такой худший альбом, но на фоне их последующих альбомов явно чувствуется вот эта простота и в музыке, и в тексте, да даже в этой вот обложке. Обнаруживайте Вещества поскорее, мальчики! Лучшая песня - All My Loving.
I think this was a great example of how the Beatles are great composers. The guitars and drums are simple but very catchy and pleasant. The guys aren't incredible vocalists, and their lyrics leave a lot to be desired for me. I was a bit disappointed when the "Mr. Postman" cover appeared. Do I need a Beatles cover of this song? Not really, but how else would you know it's the 60s? I was more disappointed when I saw that about half the album was covers. And then I checked - "Til There Was You," a song I really enjoyed, was not a Beatles original! So this album is probably a really good representation of what the 50s/60s music landscape was like. Still leaves me underwhelmed by the Beatles.
It’s the Beatles, but hadn’t heard this album before (their second). Quite a few covers, and for me rather meh.
Pretty solid album. Easy listening with some fun jams
“With the Beatles” is… still the Beatles, albeit not the striking early sound of Twist and Shout, nor anything that escapes traditional ABA form. But man, this one’s got tons of filler! Some of these records in the middle are so forgettable that, even as a (former) Beatles obsessive, I barely remember them! Maybe it’s the covers they picked. We’re supposed to rate this as an album? This is not really much of an album. It’s more just a bunch of covers for the hit parade. Pretty unfair to rate this as an album, when the group in question were a mere two years away from being on the vanguard of what the entire *concept* of an album is in the first place. But It’s fun! I like hearing them have fun. It sounds, truly, leagues better sonically than most early 60’s records. 330 albums into 1001, and I can now confirm this. Great work all around boys. We are better off that this is a mere historical footnote in what the Beatles would become. This album is somewhat charming, but— notably— only if you know the punchline, which is that we’re hearing (soon to be) of the greatest songwriting duos of all time do cover songs. Including the dozens of time I played this in high school, I think I’ve heard “With the Beatles” enough times for one life! 3/5.
It's the Beatles, truly iconic. But also, it's not the best of what the Beatles had to offer.
They evolved quite a bit as a band - this was the early years with many songs not penned by Lennon and McCartney.
So here's the thing: The Beatles are this amazing, groundbreaking band that changed how we think about bands but this right here is just An Album. A lot of good and fun songs but to me this is just the Beatles starting to become a very popular band and not necessarily become the dominant cultural force that they are today.
Early days sound of the Beatles was simple and uncomplicated. Easy listening
bello ma non il mio preferito dei beatles
good album, but only in mono, in stereo the vocals are 100% on the right ear and the instrumentals on the left, solely for that reason i won't be adding the songs i liked on my playlist, because i don't wan't to keep switching between mono and stereo everytime a song comes up
Short, poppy Beatles album
Simple Text - classical old rrmusic
Some great songs and some ok ones.
Not their best, relatively few bangers, but good to bop your head to
Liked it; I'd listen to a few of the songs again.
Most of the songs really enforce that they just want to be held. Tightly.
Oof. Yeah...not a big Beatles fan. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised. This is fine. I just get annoyed because they all sing in unison. I really don't understand the point of having four people in a band if you're all going to sing the same note. I get that they all play instruments, but idk. I will say, the songwriting is really good. 3/5 It's fine. I got bored pretty quickly.
Not great. A little annoying and maybe a little pervy.
It's alright.. get it? ALL RIGHT? :DDD
Good Album, not their best but still good. The length is perfect too, give it a listen if you're into psychedelic rock.
Not my favourite Beatles album, decent
Good pop album.
first time seriously listening to the Beatles. i’m going into this expecting them to be overrated. maybe it’s not their best album but it was very middle of the road. I woulda rated it a 2 but gave it an extra point for being a short album
Obviously the Beatles were huge, this being one of there early albums, it doesn't have much depth, lots of love songs, and covers of other popular rock songs at the time. When compared to there layer work, this album doesn't hold a candle. For the phenomenon it was at the time it came out I can see it being included as long as every other album of there's is included. Overall, standard early 60s rock and roll fare.
Oh yes wait a minute mr postman. One of the first Beatles albums, it was cool to hear some Beatles songs that weren’t amazing
Only having listened to a few Beatles songs, this was interesting. Gives me "day at the beach" vibes with it's easy going melody but hard-hitting vocals and percussion. Almost 4/5, but again it's not exactly my taste. 3/5 (would be 3.5 if I could).
Yeah, it's okay. 👍
Ningún hit destacable, el stereo extremo distrae mucho (un lado musica otro voces).
This album has some classics, but I’m not a huge Beatles fan, and this is not my favorite Beatles work.
Short and sweet. Handful of songs are obvi classics. Paul and John can write cool songs
Early Beatles. Basic guitar, drums.
Un disco con algunos temas pegadizos y otros fácilmente olvidables pero en su contexto de tiempo y época me parece un buen LP en general. Aunque personalmente no es un disco el cual escucharía en bucle.
I still don't care for The Beatles.
Solid Beatles album but not my favorite. I liked all the covers and all my loving but this does not wow me as much as later beatles albums. Still pretty solid nonetheless
I’m growing to appreciate the Beatles. Easy listen. Giving a 3 although it falls somewhere between 3-4 for me.
It sounded....old. I like all the quick songs, the Beatles sound and all. Probably wouldn't listen to it again. Looking forward to whatever is next :)
There are better Beatles albums.
Aus früher Kindheit.
Beatles finde ich gut. Drei Sterne.
Absolutely love The Beatles. Their early stuff is not my favorite, but still some good tracks. Only a 30+ minute listen.
It was fine
I know it's The Beatles and all, but this really isn't that mind-blowing. A couple catchy tracks on here for sure though.
A little slow. It was ok
I’m a big Beatles Guy and I lean heavily towards Paul. But on these early records, you really hear John’s value. He’s so good at this kind of borderline-gritty early rock thing. Not my favourite of their records, the later the better for me, but it’s a Beatles record. Of course it’s good.
I'd consider myself a Beatles fan and yet I've never listened to this album. It was curious. It sounded like the Beatles, but just blander. I do prefer late Beatles albums, but this was interesting. A few tracks stood out, but mostly I wasn't interested.
3.5
It's a very good album with some great songs. That said, there are many other Beatles albums I would choose to listen to before this one.
Obviously a classic, but never really listened to them on purpose. Quite a fun vibe right away, enjoy but won’t add to my library. 3/5.
An early album with a fair number of covers. The songs are alright but kinda forgettable
not bad, but on the lower end of the beatles discography. til there was you is great
Any Beatles songs are super nostalgic for me, I grew up hearing them daily. The Beatle's got their popularity for a reason, they're amazing at creating great music. That being said, this is not the best of their work. Not bad, but not the Beatles you want to hear. The best songs out of this album are decent Beatles songs and the worst are not of their achievable quality. Not a bad listen at all, creative and interesting, just makes me want to go listen to other better Beatles albums. Personal Favorites: Till there was you, You really got a hold on me
Jules liked it more than me.
It's the Beatles you grew up listening to on the oldies station
Started off surprisingly strong and while I'm unfamiliar with all of the music of that time period, it sounds exactly like most of what I would expect from the early 60s. I also know the only music that surivived the test of time is the best from that era. I'm unaware of the cultural impact of this album in particular and I don't know if it pushed forward music in any way but for its time I'd say this is a very solid album that starts dragging a bit in the middle. More than half of the album made became welcome additions to my shuffle playlist. I'm already mostly familiar with the Beatles so I don't think I'll be doing further listening to them at this time.
Niet de grootste beatlesfanaat maar wel leuk 3/5. Rip sjon lemon
Here we can hear unusual external influences from other genres of the time, like e.g. surf.
Not the biggest Beatles fan but nonetheless a solid album
Groovy, upswing, feels flat sometimes
Lots of familiar songs, they’re catchy for sure, but do I actually enjoy listening to them? Not very much. Okay, maybe I like singing along to “All my Loving”… I kinda liked the Postman song as well. That was about it though.
Not bad, but wasn’t great either
Was wondering when my first Beatles album would come up! There's so much early Beatles goodness in this one, which I adore, but also some tracks I'm not a fan of (All I've Got To Do, Don't Bother Me, You Really Got a Hold on Me). Iconic tracks: All My Loving, Please Mister Postman, Till There Was You, Hold Me Tight Till There Was You feels like the start of Paul doing his own thing -- I think they start coming into their own in this album, but you really start hearing their own sound in A Hard Day's Night. This album still has a whole bunch of covers and general samey-ness across most tracks. This one is 3* for me, not one of my top Beatles albums. It gets a star over 2 because it's the Beatles, but in isolation I'm not sure this album stood the test of time.
ah yes, the worst beatles album.
They were yet to fully develop their songwriting, but there's a glimmer of the greatness to come, for example "All My Loving". Hell this was 1963, and this was only their second album. I also really liked "All I've Got to Do" and "I Wanna Be Your Man", plus their covers of "Till There Was You", "You Really Got a Hold on Me", and "Money (That's What I Want)".
It's not that it's bad, it's just that, for The Beatles, it's unimpressive. It's a rock n' roll record of its time: some originals, a lot of covers. The Beatles do them well enough, on a sliding scale of "ehhhh" to "yeah that's good", but the Lennon-McCartney tracks are the main standouts. Favorite tracks: "It Won't Be Long", "Hold Me Tight"
Kinda forgot how lame The Beatles sound was when they first got started. You can hear the talent but this is so sugary and forgettable. 2.5/5
It's fine, not my favorite but is foundational to all that comes later
not bad, kinda vibed with some of the songs.
A good pop album from the 60s. If the Beatles never went on to create some incredible albums not sure this would be highly remembered. I did not know they did cover songs which sounded very odd to me. “Money that’s what I want” was a Motown cover, thought that was a Beatles original. Cool to listen to early Beatles but prefer the more prolific stuff.
There were some fun songs on here and I can definitely see why this album was included on the list. The Beatles are one of the most popular and influential bands ever, even if their music isn’t as great as some other artists. I think the songs were pretty basic, but maybe that’s why the Beatles became as big as they were.
I respect the value this album and this group has, but the british-flower-power sort of music has never really interested me (as much as I try to like it) The one track I enjoyed was Till There Was You, probably because it was largely outside of their regular genre.
Oh boy, the most overrated band ever. Admittedly they aren't that bad, just super overhyped. They were very influentual to music though. A reluctant solid 3/5
I'm just now realising that the word "Beat" is in "The Beatles" and I feel like I've been living a lie
Aside from a few hits, it feels like the same song throughout. The covers underwhelmed.
I liked it, felt like the songs were all very similar
6.5/10, not that landmark when taking the other records into account. Just did not leave the impression much of their later material did. Still good music!
love the beatles but not my fave of theirs
ok
Not bad, but nowhere near their best. Can see where they were going with it, safe album. 3 stars
Prima tweede album. Sommige nummers beter dan op het vorige album, maar als geheel niet zo goed
Hints at the greatness to come. Love the short songs and ~30 min length, too. In and out!
It won't be long Till There Was You Please Mister Postman Hold Me Tight You Really Got A Hold On Me Money
Probably not the best Beatles record. It was fine!
As much as I appreciate how influential The Beatles were for music, they've never been for me. I've always found their music very formulaic (granted they created the formula) when compared to other bands of the '60's like The Kinks and The Rolling Stones and this was no exception. The songs I enjoyed most on this album were their covers of other songs and Don't Bother Me, written by George Harrison which says a lot about what I think about Lennon-McCartney!
Early Beatles… yeah.. a bit bland. Most of the songs here are a bit bland and tacky. The songs sound ok, it’s just that most of them all have the same theme of love / break ups. There’s good cuts on this, but they’re few and far between. It’s ok.
If The Beatles had not written more albums, this would be considered 3 stars, maybe 3.5. If you didn't know the difference, and someone presented this album to you as from an obscure band called the The Crickets, you would not give this 4 or 5 stars. People are basing their ratings on the name and other works by The Beatles, not on the album itself. If this were their first album, I might give it another star based on its historical importance. Or if it showed significant growth. Since neither is the case, it stays 3 stars.
It’s the Beatles
Classic, slightly boring
Didn't mind any of this, and I'm "not a fan of the Beatles". The Beatles Story at the Albert Dock is excellent - focussing mainly on the early years, which is the era I'm most interested in (however I don't mind a few tracks from a few of their different albums). I don't think anyone that has lived in Liverpool is a fan of the Beatles, am yet to meet someone that qualifies. Saying that, the museum is good - lots of interesting memorabilia on display and recreations of eras and places, such as the Imagine room. Listened to this whilst over-encumbered with flu. Helped my mental state - almost hallucinatory.
not my fav beatles album ngl
Still in their boyband phase, however their talent and chemistry already shows and makes this a good listen. (74%).
One of the better Beatles album but I've grown apart from this band over the years
POjkbands-Beatles är inte riktigt min grej
John Lennon’s voice is pure rock and roll in this album. This is The Beatles right in the middle of their jangly Merseybeat phase before expanding their sound in the later albums. The cover tracks are fine but are probably the low points.
Ok, kinda interesting but a bit too bubblegum.
6.5
Sounds like early Beatles. Not my favorite album of theirs.
Not my favorite Beatles album
The last of the old-time rock a billy Not at all revolutionary, but demonstrated excellence
Meh, not that into the Beatles
Good album. Enjoy these early pop tracks that cemented the path to beatlemania
3.4
The Beatles are obviously an icon, their music is catchy, I get it... classic stuff that was huge in its era and well-loved still today. For me personally, a lot of their music sounds the same and I find other genres more interesting. I don't dislike it, it's fine, I'm just not in love. [*shields face from the masses throwing rotten tomatoes at him for a slightly less than glowing review*]
Meh
early beatles are interesting. because on one hand no one would be talking about them if it weren't for where they went after, but on the other hand it's still cool. so like 3 ig
Simpatic albumul, placut de ascultat, interesant de imaginat ce cultura muzicala era pe vremuri cand mai toate melodiile sunt despre dragoste.
Pleasant, really enjoyed the covers. It is certainly a lot less unique than their later work.
The Beatles before they were great. Nascent qualities on display, but a boy band at this point. Not artists yet. Performers.
Beetje opa en oma muziek
74/100
This is so far down the list of Beatles albums I would've picked. Not bad, but not Sgt. Peppers either.
I realize that I’ve never sat down and listened to the Beatles before. Honestly not expecting this style of music. As with most albums I suspect, good but no bangers, three stars.
Some good songs, some ok songs. One extremely creepy song.
I do enjoy The Beatles, but maybe i'm more of a fan of their greatest hits than individual albums
the Beatles.
C'est les Beatles, ça sonne comme les Beatles. Un peu dans le style de Hard Day's night : une ou deux pièces connues et tout le reste sonne comme du vieux rock n roll. 5/10
All My Loving // Till There Was You // Please Mister Postman // You Really Got A Hold On Me // 2.5/5
Bueno, la verdad no soy fan. Es mi primera vez escuchando algo de ellos.
C'est pas a tou casser ahah pas leur meilleur c'est certain. 3.75
if you’re a beatles hater fucking grow up!!!!
I mean it's a Beatles record, not the best but still
That was a fun listen and there were some real highlights
meh. I think I just don't like most of their earlier work. All My Lovin is the best song on this album imo and I don't even like it that much, even after performing it with a band.
OK, spme good songs. Prob the worst Beatles album
On With the Beatles the Fab Four starts showing signs that they would later turn out to be some of the finest song writers ever. “Don’t Bother Me” and “It Won’t Be Long” are the best examples of this while the covers of “Please Mister Postman” and “Devil In Her Heart” also work great. With the Beatles is enjoyable through and through but there’s still some way from this to what those four Liverpool lads were destined to become.
It was fine 60s pop rock is really the majority of what I can say. Most of the songs are catchy, but overly short and a bit repetitive perhaps, but it's easy to listen the instrumentation sounds nice for that time period.
classic stuff, early on their journey
A couple days ago I came down pretty hard on Elvis. Maybe I'm a huge hypocrite, but I like the Beatles quite a bit more. Even this early record is quite good, thanks largely to the band's stellar vocals and catchy-ass melodies. Bonus points for fitting 14 songs into a 33-minute record; my short attention span appreciates it. Sidenote: I listened to this in mono. I hate 1960s hard-panned stereo so, so much. Mono version sounds quite good.
The early beatles albums aren't particularly my favorite in their catalogue, and I've revisited them far less than anything beginning from Rubber Soul onward. This albums a little better than Please Please Me imo, its more aligned with my taste in the band. I'm almost tempted to give this one 2 stars but it just feels wrong, I feel like a 3 out of 5 is fair enough as there's just enough to like in this one.
Twee.
Still a lot of covers at this point in their careers
Nothing special with today's lens.
So pure. The songs aren't amazing, but the performances are sharp, refreshing, intense and creative
Just ok, like them better on psychedelics
Very fun, and upbeat. First full Beatles album, so I’m looking forward to the rest. 3.8/5.
Kinda mid
I love The Beatles as the next man but their early albums are not as powerful as the proto-prog of the later days. It's a decent listen though but overall you wish for more.
60 years later ....Still sounds great!!!
meh...beatles halt
It's the Beatles. If you like the early Beatles you'll probably like this album at least a little bit. Not a lot of "hits". If you had to pick just 1 album from the Beatles to put on a 1001 list, this would not be it. The last song, "Money (That's That I Want)" slaps. Seems like that was the trend in this era, to create a banger exit song. Their previous album closed with "Twist & Shout". 3/5
It's not my favorite Beatles nor early Beatles but ...it's still the Beatles. Don't Bother Me is a special surprise -- not sure I've heard it before .
This is a wild choice out of all the amazing Beatles records to pick their 2nd that's still almost half covers, before they found their unique voice and call it a necessary listen. Come on Robert Dimery, you call this editing?! If any later albums are MISSING and this is included the guy is deranged. It's like 1 of 3 that I'd argue are skippable for your average casual listener. I would argue most are gonna be underwhelmed by anything before Help!, but even BFS has gems and Hard Day's Night has the iconic film. I've been in a stressed out headspace and I'm a Paul over John guy so that's gonna affect things but this would have felt like a chore today if the songs weren't so short, which was disappointing to realize. Like eating lettuce out of the bag instead of a fully dressed salad, I found myself wishing I could at least 'follow the sun' but stuck in 63 we are - not yet at the "much more than the sum of their parts" stage of the fab 4. But it's still the Beatles and Paul's vocal on Til There Was You is really lovely.
Born after 1970... I remain unmoved. It's and album of soft background music of the era. I have never listened to so much of this band in all my life... Why does this not speak to me?
Vond dit wel chill. Veel Korte nummers wel
It’s good obviously but pales compared to what came later
Good pop music is good pop music. Fun upbeat!
This album wasn’t super strong for me. There was a couple songs I really liked, but the audio quality wasn’t great. There were also times where their voices just sounded flat out annoying. Looking forward to hearing more of their later albums though.
Really nice! Some good covers but these guys were a also supergroup from the start. I like their bluesy songs the most
Solid album
a bouncy half-hour of pop that should engage no 21st century adult for longer than its running time
Good all round but I preferred revolver
An interesting one. At first it's hard to hear past the fact this is the Beatles playing. However, these tracks get repetitive. It's a very teenage set of songs, focused on fawning affection for girls and not very rebellious rebellion (e.g. roll over Beethoven). This is real Beatlemania stuff that doesn't get near to competing with what follows. That said, the songz are generally pretty charming, but just too twee to be actually good imo. All my loving is the stand out. Till there was you would be a great track for holiday photo montages.
Standalone I could have given this a 4, but half of it is covers so that gets a thumbs down. They're not bad covers, though
Wrote a review but it deleted. 3.5/5
Ok.
Early Beatles, somehow prefer their later stuff, this sound quite dated
I never knew the Beatles did a cover of a song from the music man!
I love the Beatles, though I am a much bigger fan of the later (Rubber Soul and beyond) material and don't much like a lot of the real early stuff. I mean, I get it, it's groundbreaking, but given the choice, I'd never spin this record given the other choices in the Beatles catalog. Which makes it a perfect album for this venture. And it reinforced what is something of a no-thought given for me, which is I'm only partly enthralled with this. There is great material here, and it's AMAZING that this enduring music was recorded on a 4-track (two-track? whatever... it's studio voodoo), but there are moments I actively don't enjoy. "Little Child" and "Not A Second Time" are both kind of awkward and speak to my being a massive McCartney fan and less enamored with Lennon's work on the whole. And maybe it was impossible not to do it, but none of the covers are my fave (though "Till There Was You" is a fun addition). So anyway, I think I'm sounding bitchy. I think these guys might be pretty big someday.
Genres: Merseybeat, rock and roll, pop, R&B Formed: Liverpool in 1960 Run time: 14 songs, 33 min 6 sec Great pop songs. Plenty of covers on this album. I loved more than half the tracks and liked most of the others. My Rating: ***
