I have little love for the older stuff The Beatles made - it's just not my cup of tea. A lot of it feels samey, and the vocal work just doesn't do it for me. That said, I recognize that there are still some good tracks here. 'Till There Was You' was my fave from this album.

It's hilarious how average this is

Houmous & Chutney wrote and performed the soundtrack to the hit 2003 film Beethoven’s 5th. It almost didn’t happen. Len had a crisis of conscience. He’d promised John way back when that he’d never perform in any sort of tribute to John or Yoko and we agreed we’d never cover Roll Over Beethoven. How do you follow The Beatles effort? So few people ever understood that the entire premise of all 6 films was that Beethoven the dog WAS John Lennon. That’s why we did the 5th. We got offered all of them. Only when we got to the 5th did we realise no one knew so it was fine. 3.2

Never rated them highly and this didn’t change it

We're still with the early Beatles here, so there are a few covers (Please Mr Postman, Roll Over Beethoven, Money (That's What I Want), and others), but they're done very well, very well indeed. They do manage to avoid Difficult Second Album Syndrome on their own compositions - All My Loving went on to be a classic in their stable, and the others can hold their heads high. All in all, if you're a fan you'll know it, if not give it a try, you won't go far wrong.

Beatles at their best? No. Beatles at their most industrious? Maybe... 14 songs, 6 covers, 2 LPs in under a year as was the typical fare of early 60s music. The covers are tights, especially the cover of the Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman", the original songs are serviceable with "All My Loving" being the obvious peak but it's obvious when that and that alone tends to appear on any greatest hit compilation album...

It's The Beatles. I'm sure everyone has heard 90% of these songs on this album without seeking them out. I understand that they changed the course of music, etc. ect. I think this album fine. Okay. Incredibly listenable. There's not a lot there for me to come back to. Money (That's What I Want) was the standout track to me.

A good example of Beatles MK1. Before they took their role as innovators of rock n roll music to come, they were mastering the early 60s pop scene. There are a handful of very noteworthy things here. The skill in playing, the normalization of the band writing their own music (since a novelty at the time), and their first artistic take on the cover art. This was also the first British album to sell a million copies. All of this would be influential. However, the thing you hear all the time about this period is "It's not their best work". Hard to argue with that. If the Beatles had stopped here, they'd still have been an important band, but wouldn't have still been a household name today. They'd have been talked about in terms of nostalgia and academic history of popular music only. Their true place in Western culture was still to come but the early hints are there. The Beatles were already different from the rest at this stage.

It's a good record and includes my favorite Beatles song but a few too many covers. Still a fun listen. Favorite: All My Loving Would I listen to it again: Yes

The Beatles second album is solid, concise and nothing wasted coming in at 33:07. Good batch of songs, great opener but lacks in flow, and what I consider some of the better work.

Some bops by kind of twee

Is it weird that I've never listened to this? The 60s aren't really my era... it's okay, it's cheery, I could have a lil dance to this quite happily. I don't think it's the best Beatles album by any stretch.

The Beatles are great, no argument there. They have many albums that belong on this list. This isn’t one of them. Some really good stuff here but it doesn’t hold a candle to their best.

Seems like 3 is a harsh rating but let it be known I still enjoy and respect this record. It starts strong, then there's some duds, then it picks back up again. I like the acid Beatles.

2/19/25. Straightforward songs, but catchy. The Beatles had something magical at the time of this release, and to think they would only get better.

Good, but not great. I see why Beatlemania kicked off around this time, but the Beatles have much better projects.

The Beatles originals on this record are, of course, not bad at all. I particularly enjoy 'It Wont Be Long'. They certainly wrote thirst trap music. But the covers here are jot great, bland versions of american hits.

Not my favorite, but there's some bangers.

Most Beatles album contain some good songs, some average songs and one or two awful songs. This one is different, I find it uniformly bland. It's mostly plain R&R with not much to say about it. Not bad, just meh. All My Loving may be my relative favourite, but the lyrics are cheesy. Oh, and Money, but that's not their song (and not better than the original version). Maybe the better more creative (more drugs infused?) music was only kicking off a bit later in the 1960s, in general and also for the Beatles.

Good but not great. Some moments of true pop genius, some mailed in afterthoughts.

An album before The Beatles actually were good. The songs are short, the lyrics laughable and many of the songs are covers. I've given many of their later albums 5/5 but this one shouldn't be on the 1001 album list as so many of their other works are better.

Nice to hear the classics. Not a huge Beatles fan, but undeniably great.

I suppose I can appreciate it for what it was and why it was on the list, but was pumped to have some Beatles bangers on a Friday and was disappointed with what I got :/

It was ok

Probably one of the weakest Beatles albums in the context of their whole catalog, but still very good the context of the era. The Lennon-McCartney penned tracks are generally all very good, especially the first 3 tracks and Not a Second Time. The covers are fine, but not something to really come back to.

I get why it's on the list, and I'm tempted to rate it higher because it's the Beatles, but it's nearly half cover versions, and they're just lacking a bit of... something. Maybe it's just too polished compared to their rockier live performances before they were picked up.

Primitive Beatles, although not as primitive as the earlier stuff. Surprisingly sophisticated chord progressions lurk within the rock n roll bangers, and I suppose this shouldn’t be too surprising given the amount of song in their repertoire. Definitely an album of singles with plenty of covers. Their originals definitely better than the covers but those portend what’s to come

I'm not huge on early Beatles, but this album exceeded my memory of it. Some very good songs on this, even it gets a touch annoying by the end of its 33-minute runtime. It's a real feat that I didn't mind listening to their version of "Please Mr. Postman" after a different version of that song was burned into my brain on the repeating Chuck E. Cheese soundtrack when I worked there for a summer in high school.

Great singing, songwriting, and production, yet I still don't really like The Beatles.

Early Beatles - I love the Mr. postman cover. The traditional rock riffs just ooze early Beatlemania. I can get it - slightly edgier than previous rock and lyrics that made the teens swoon.

Young Beatles. What makes them Beatles is in this album, but they get interesting with later albums.

Meh, this is not the Beatles at their best. But that makes sense- they're young and new in this (it's their second studio album). Notable and included on this list due to what the Beatles became, but not solely based on this body of work. Til There Was You & Money were enjoyable. 5.5/10 (2.75/5)

Just like usual, I feel I appreciate and respect the Beatles more than I like them. Their impact can't be understated, but I personally just don't click with their music. And that's totally fine - not everything is for everyone. But I can still appreciate it

With The Beatles is not The Beatles at their best, nowhere near it, mostly because half the album is covers of songs done loads better by their originators (and there are betters covers done since too). A couple of strong original songs help, and the overall vibe is very listenable mostly because of the covers (Motown is great and they've just decided to hitch themselves to it here for whatever reason), but it's a 3/5 at best, which I suppose for me is generous given I'm not a Beatles fan really.

This is the Beatles whilst they were still a twinkly pop band - it's mostly straight down the line poppy rock and roll, which is decently done, but not fundamentally that interesting. Doesn't really signal what they'd go on to do, but a decent enough pop album so 3/5.

I can see how this was a new sound back in the day, but it sounds kinda...ordinary? And the guitars are a bit rough on Roll Over Beethoven compared to the original. But it's OK I suppose.

Well it's clear they're having a blast recording this, and for a first time listen it's... Fine. Not for me but I can see the appeal, just a bit too one note for the most part. I know a few of these songs from radio play, and obviously some of the ones they're covering - I aassume it's harkening back to their cavern Club days with these. Like I Say, it's perfectly servicable but a bit bland, I prefer the Beatles later on when they got weirder.

Another Beatles album - two in succession. George still gets the best song prize - taste is a personal thing, but I always engage most with his music. However I do think Lennon and McCartney were writing better songs than most of the people they were covering. I described Lennon in my previous review as an intense ball of creativity, and you can hear the urgency to get his output out there. Perhaps it was the way things were done then, but it sounds like they were rushing to get albums out during these first three or four years, and it would be interesting to hear what they'd have come up with with a bit more time and without filling the album with covers.

My eyes glaze over halfway in … but the fiercest numbers are front loaded, and, dare I say, portend awesome things to come. I can’t help but feel like better bands were out doing more interesting things in 1963 – but maybe this record needed to be made so they’d never again be so bloody twee. A 3 by the Beetles standards, so unfair in many ways. But I’m willing to say it: it’s only OK.

I liked this album more than Rubber Soul... but I attribute that to this album having more songs from Across the Universe on it. Still not a Beatles fan, but it's cool to listen to the original songs that inspired the songs in that musical. It's fine. Nothing great

There are a lot of classics on this one. Many songs I've heard at one point or another; I didn't realize they were all on this album. Favorite: Don't Bother Me.

First time listening to a whole Beatles album. Really enjoyed the pulsing, frantic nature of the sound, drums especially. It Won't Be Long probably the highlight of the album.

This album is enjoyable, but not great. Most of the songs on here are pretty forgettable and have the stereotypical Beatles sound. “All My Loving” might be the only great Beatles song on here, but the cover versions of “Please Mr. Postman” and “Roll Over Beethoven” are also pretty good.

I think it's difficult to rate this album without thinking of the later Beatles albums which had such an impact on rock and pop. While appreciating The Beatles' contributions, I've never really cared to listen to their music - maybe it's so ubiquitous. For example, I doubt I've ever played this album before, but I was familiar with every track on this album. From reading the background of this album on the Wikipedia page, I can see that The Beatles, their management and their producer were begining to flex creative muscles (over sleeve design, for example) in the face of what looks like complacency on the label's part. And while this album was part of the move into international stardom, I don't really think the songs stand out particularly to me - still too much focussed on girl-boy relationships without real subtlety. I think the strongest songs are some of the cover versions. I suppose in retrospect there's a direction of travel to be perceived.

No private Spotify session used. I have listened to later works of The Beatles a lot, good to revisit their roots when they were white boys doing black rock and roll, but I will always go back to their later stuff if I want to listen to the Beatles.

Even if the Beatles went on to do very little I think this would still fairly popular, but a couple of weak points 3.5*

It’s weird, because The Beatles obviously ended up being really good, but the first 4 albums are kind of meh to me. 6 covers and 8 originals on this one. I dunno man, I’m glad they did all this stuff in order to become they band they ended up, but without all of the Mania that surrounded them at this time, the music isn’t very exciting to me now.

You really need to be a Beatles fan to work through this album. The sound is very spotty and the songs are very similar. Some of their early hits on on this and it’s very much a album for the early 1960’s

I do like The Beatles a lot but their early output is not my favorite. This album has some nice pop songs but it doesn't excite me like Revolver or The White Album. All I've Got To Do is my favorite. Little Child is embarrassing. I'd much rather listen to the later albums starting from Rubber Soul.

It is so sad this is on here, because The Beates have at least 8 better albums, so this really takes up a place from another great album from a different artist. That being said, it is a great pop/rock album.

John Lennon said this album defines the Beatles sound, so I guess I have to trust him, but they have so many that are better.

They probably did it better than anyone before, but by today's standards it's just alright. Production is especially bad. The technology wasn't better yet. The songs are good. I prefer their later work. Favorite song: all my loving.

I listened to a remaster and was not impressed; voices in the right channel and instruments in the left channel, not exactly revolutionary! Early Beatles are not that impressive, like a boy band but they can all play and the harmonic vocals are the highlight. All the tracks on this album are about girls (except for 'Roll Over Beethoven' and 'Money') which rather limits its variety but the songs do work well individually, even without the production that enriches later work. Given its era, it is really good but it is what comes later that raises this up as a group that can grow and grow.

I would vote 4 or 5 stars if it was only the first half, it’s still interesting to see the peeks of brilliance through the catchy pop tunes

quite liked this one, im not a massive beatles fan, so this album wont be getting above a three, but it is deffo a fun album, i did enjoy it!! :))

Proof that the Beatles started out as a saccharine boy band that would eventually morph into one of the most definitive music makers ever. If these songs were released for the first time today, they'd sound no different from other boy bands.

Mostly sounds like generic 50s surfer rock. Definitely before they had their own sound.

I don't know they just sound like the beach boys or early 60s surf rock. A far cry from later stuff.

Till there was you is the most underrated beatles song fact

The amazing thing with this album is that within two years of it, they made Rubber Soul, then Revolver a year later, and Sgt Pepper's another year later. You really wouldn't guess from this collection of songs.

This was ok, but the best songs on the album, Please Mister Postman and Money (That’s What I Want), are both covers that, while good, are no better than the originals. Maybe a necessary stepping stone to greatness, but on its own merits this is just a 3

It's actually better than other Beatles records I've heard. Still not great. But better. Ish. The opening track and Roll Over Beethoven are pretty cool. Slightly generous 3. Probably a 2.75

The problem with this is its so hard not to compare it to all the other Beatles work with so many better songs further into their careers. I’m guessing at the time this was a popular album but now it feels like bit of a filler in-between albums and most of the songs don’t really grab the attention. Not rubbish but given they’ve done so many better songs this album just doesn’t really do much for me.

Clearly the early stages of a band that would progress significantly over the upcoming years. Not sure the tracks on this justified the Beatlemania that followed, or perhaps it was a classic case of style over substance just like other boy bands that followed. I wonder what would have happened if East 17 had pulled a strawberry fields out of the bag?

Three Beatles albums in fairly quick succession, and I’m coming to two conclusions. Firstly, I prefer their early stuff. The poppier more r&b based stuff just seems more what was truly unique and exciting about them. And it certainly gets me more excited over the later slower more psych type stuff, which while they were influential they weren’t unique in that style/genre (and certainly not the best). Secondly, Harrison wrote the best song on this one, Abbey Road and White Album. Guess I was suckered into the wide assumption he was the untalented one. More fool me. Anyway, I enjoyed listening to this, but there are too many covers (not all that great either) to give it a big score.

You had to be there.

How The Beatles were already this huge at this point in their career is beyond me. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with their first few albums, this music is so basic, even for the standards at the time.

First of all, big fan of this album cover. It looks like they kinda forgot about Ringo and had to quickly add him in after the fact. As far as the music goes, I know this was historically significant in the rise of the Beatles, but it's so bland. It sounds like they're playing at a prom in the 50s. It's very early-Beatles, and it's fine I guess. It's not necessarily one I would listen to straight through again.

Several fine tracks, however this is one of my least favorite album by the Beatles.

I think it’s ok to admit that early Beatles were just ‘ok’. I understand that they were starting to do things that other bands weren’t, but while there are some classics here (I Wanna Be Your Man, Hold Me Tight, All My Lovin’) we also have half an album of fairly ordinary rock’n’roll covers that don’t really add much to the story. Maybe it’s because we know how spectacular the story becomes in its later chapters, but I can only call it like it hear it.

It's The Beatles. What else can I say?

I'm feeling that you had to be there. The rhythms are fun and the whole tone is very... slick, it hangs greatly together, but I'm already forgetting the whole of it.

- Favs while listening: All my Loving, Till there was you - All My Loving has some great chord work from Lennon and Harrison and some heartfelt vocals from McCartney during the chorus -Till There Was You is an acoustic ballad with some nice guitar work as well as an amazing vocal performance from McCartney who really shines on there - that album isn't progressive but it's another step towards what the Beatles would become - while this album isn’t really my favorite of the Beatles, it still has some good ones on there but I wouldn’t listen to it as a whole again OVERALL: 3/5

This album was voted in a list of top 200 ever made... Who writes these lists? It's not bad, it's not great either, it's alright background music, like a pub cover band. A few of these songs are covers as well, all the 5 star reviews are overhyped. I do enjoy Ringo drums though, always against what you would naturally have thought. It's a middling album, straight down the middle score for me.

A Beatles fan since I was a child I used to listen to this album on an old Grundig reel to reel tape player. By no means my favourite Beatles album but some great songs my favourites being It Wont be Long and All my Loving. I think this album is best remembered for its covers rather than original Beatles songs

There's a number of lovely ditties on this, but WOW did drugs do a lot for this band's writing, music, and hair. Thank gawd!

Early gems for any classic Beatles fan! Mostly covers but the seeds are sown here.

It’s easy to take the Beatles’ breadth of output for granted, but With the Beatles takes us back to where the formula first gelled. There’s a lot of saccharine pop here, some of it (like All I’ve Got to Do) is nearly indistinguishable from future British Invasion bands, which could adult be mistaken for a Gerry and the Pacemakers track. And, of course, this only underscores Lennon and McCartneys influence over their generation. It is difficult to judge this album and not score it against the totally of the Beatles’ output. On its own, it demonstrates outstanding and ahead of its time pop songwriting skills, despite certain throwaway tracks (the cover of You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me is both forgettable and regrettable). But it’s otherwise a far cry from there the band’s talents and creativity would ultimately take it. As with the earliest records of so many legendary artists (the Stones, Bowie, Pink Floyd) it serves as a more insightful reference point than it does as a singular output. 3/5 stars

Didn’t like it as much as the white album but still had a good chunk of enjoyable songs some songs just felt too slow and almost whiny

Remastered album from 2009 not sounding the best on headphones! Early stereo is not great Don't Bother Me - country-ish of the almost sinister sort. Excitement more intoxicating than the songwriting. More bossa nova rhythms than expected... Overall: simply ok.

Wat een intelligente popnummers, vol met aandoenlijke melodietjes, briljante samenzang, goed doordachte lyrics en vooruitstrevende en dissonante riffjes. Ze trekken duidelijk les uit R&B en Rock & Roll van overzees, maar geven hier al zo'n eigenzinnige draai aan, alsof het al een doorgewinterde band is met een unieke stijl. Je vergeet in deze fase dat het nog maar een stel kinderen zijn. De magic touch van John en Paul zijn al snel hoorbaar, maar zoals wel vaker met Beatles-albums komt één van de spaarzame George Harrison-liedjes bovendrijven, want die zijn eigenlijk altijd kwaliteit. 'Don't Bother Me' kende ik nog niet, maar is echt een eyecatcher. Later op het album grijpen ze wat meer terug naar hun idolen uit de US, met een aantal geinige covers. Hier hoor je wel weer wat beter hoe de band letterlijk nog in zijn kinderschoenen staat. Veel van deze covers zijn oké, maar verbergen ook wel een beetje hun eigen inventiviteit die bij die eerste vier tracks zo sterk naar voren kwam. 'Till There Was You' is een uitzondering, en is een cover van een 50s popsong met een Cubaanse bolera twist. Dit is echt vintage Paul McCartney, en is wat dat betreft meer dan zomaar een cover. Het is een blauwdruk waar Paul later zoveel mooie hits mee scoorde. De tweede helft is minder interessant, maar desalniettemin blijft dit toch een speciaal album voor het jaar 1963. R&B/Rock&Roll bandjes - of zoals in dit geval 'Merseybeat' offshoots - schoten rond dit jaar als paddenstoelen uit de grond, maar niemand deed het met zo'n uniek geluid en zoveel consistentie als The Beatles. 7,5/10 Highlights: All I've Got To Do Don't Bother Me Till There Was You

It's hard tp listen to a Beatles album and not compare it to other Beatles albums. This album is low on the Beatles list. Too many covers (that was a big thing bands did back then, I get it) but if giving it a rating I'm just going to say it's meh. 2.5 I guess. Although I'm not thrilled. I'll round up because it's still the Beatles

An easy listen, we had the US versions Meet The Beatles and Beatle’s 2nd Album at 4Ex so knew all the songs. The cover also became a classic over time. A fun 35 minute experience that brought back memories of the 60s. Still good, but not great (3.4*s)

Hard to beat the classics. The Beatles are in the pantheon of great and influential artists for so many reasons. While I've been exposed to The Beatles for 30+ years I haven't run through many of their early albums. I was familiar with about half of these songs through various radio segments and their existence in the cultural zeitgeist. The tracks I didn't know had more of the same catchy simplicity that the early Beatles mastered and managed to successfully crank out to take the world by storm. With The Beatles is expectedly bubble-gum pop but its crazy that their catalog from the early 60's still sounds so good and enjoyable. I'd probably rank With The Beatles on the lower side of their discography but that isn't to be a knock, merely to recognize how strong their albums were through their insane 10 year run. I know there is going to be more Beatles and I'm excited for the forthcoming albums. 3.04 stars

Haven’t really heard the earlier Beatles before. Short and upbeat, quite funky, but I do prefer the later stuff. Maybe I’m just more familiar with it. I’ll give this another listen sometime to see if my opinion changes though. Highlights: It Won’t Be Long Please Mister Postman Roll Over Beethoven

Lennon first and now the Beatles?! It’s a fine album - just a little juvenile (for me and clearly for the Beatles as their second album). I remember liking the songs from this album as a freshman/sophomore. The sweet lyrics and swingy/poppy beats were all I needed but just doesn’t scratch my musical itch anymore. This is like the weird middle child of the Beatles, which is weird considering it's their second album. They did a lot more interesting stuff on A Hard Day's Night and Please Please Me, but this one sort of blends in along with Beatles For Sale. It's still the Beatles so it's not bad, they can just do so much better. Favorites are All My Loving, Till There Was You, Please Mister Postman, and You Really Got a Hold On Me

This album by itself is kind of basic. There are a few covers of some classic songs, and the original songs by the Beatles don't exactly push the envelope. Standard early sixties renditions, and nothing like what they would be known for later in the sixties. But you can also see early hints of genius, like with how serenely McCartney sang "Till There Was You" or Harrison's lyrics in "Don't Bother Me." I was also thinking about how much the Beatles changed the face of music for decades to come. The Rolling Stones and Beatles originally focused primarily on covers, following the paths set by others, but branched out and crafted music themselves as they explored creativity. Like I said, this album is basic, but it's a clear stepping stone for their careers and it impacted the trajectory of the music business, too.

The Beatles are one of few bands that I feel like have earned so many spots on this project, as many of their albums just raise the bar time after time and are musically significant. All that said, in terms of this project, I would argue that this album is maybe the most unnecessary Beatles inclusion. Is it okay musically? Yes, sure. But is it musically significant enough to be included on this project? Meh. Sure, they were a sensation from the very beginning (this album makes me wonder how if I'm being completely honest), but their album significance did not start or continue here, in my opinion. And I honestly was not aware that they had an album (let alone multiple albums) where half of the album was covers. All in all, you can see hints of who The Beatles would become peaking out in certain songs, but overall, the album is not quite at that level yet. An okay album, but I definitely feel like it wouldn't be on here if it weren't The Beatles.

Sounds ok and competent (especially the Please Mister Postman cover) but I always get bored when listening to this album. It is just like as with that very early Rolling Stones album from last month or so: why is this on the list other than historical reasons? The album is by no means any special.

In 2024, this pile of covers isn’t very impressive. I get that on a basic level as white dudes at the time, they’re making these tunes their own in a way. We do hear the genius that is to come in the first four tunes. But in the big scheme of things not an exceptional album IMHO.

It’s quality for being what it is. Still really heavily blues influenced and nothing particularly innovative happening yet here, but it’s kind of nice to listen to a beatles album that doesn’t have 6 or 7 songs the radio has milked dry.

Early Beatles album. Slightly lame at times.

It’s not the best Beatles offering by far. It’s fine, there’s lots of staple rock n roll tracks, but this is a band still doing the basics to get themselves known. It’s competent but not impressive.

Certainly not bad by any means, but doesn't really have any standout tracks or memorable moments like the rest of their albums do. At times I felt it would work perfectly for a sunny summer morning, sipping tea and feeling all of your problems melt away... ...and then at other times I wanted to jab something down my throat. How they ever got THAT famous is beyond me. They couldn't even write half their own songs on here. I will say, though: they knew when to put an album out of its misery.

Not the record you think of particularly As a classic Beatles album, Hard Day's Night is the obvious classic of the early period. But it's kinda necessary to include this representative of The Beatles as they find their footing. Some of the covers are exceptional. There's a few average tracks here though for sure. Hard to rate. Obviously not a 5, probably a low 4. Nah, forget that. Following this listen, being brutally honest it's all pretty average bar All my Lovin, Postman and Money are the covers that really pass muster, the others are just ok. Besides that it's a fun listen, but if it wasn't The Beatles this for sure wouldn't be here. Warrants a middling ranking.

Early Beatles are delightful, but half of the delight is knowing how different they’ll sound in just a few years. That said, George Harrison’s intro on Roll Over Beethoven is kinda terrible. And I was surprised there were so many covers. I wonder if musical copyrights didn’t come about until later? Of the original songs, All My Loving is a standout. Great song. Not a fave album by any means, but still noteworthy. 3.6

It’s not a bad album. But it’s far from their greatest. This album sounds rushed. And when I was looking up the history of this record, it seems like the writing and recording was squeezed between a massive amount of live appearances and broadcast obligations.. The production choice to put the vocals in the right channel and the instruments in the left channel too much of the sloppiness that the band exhibited in the sessions. The fact that there are cover songs here as well as what we might call transitional Beatles pieces means that the record is somewhat disjointed, but I can see how it might be a reflection of their live appearances at the time. So, we’re definitely with the Beatles here, but we’re not completely consumed by them yet.

Pretty good. Obviously doesn't get near their best, but Til There Was You is a sweet little song.

Quite good. Easy to see how they became so famous. The relentlessly romantic themes are a real grind, but the skillful performance through a broad range of sounds makes listening worthwhile.

"With The Beatles" is the second studio album by The Beatles, originally released in 1963 on Parlophone Records. The album was released as a debut under a different name in the US ("Meet The Beatles") along with a different tracklist. The Beatles had already become a household name in the UK and were well on their way to becoming one in the US around this time. Because of this, the label required them to record and release more than 1 LP a year to cash in on the success, and it shows on this record. It's almost evenly split half-and-half with covers and originals. The originals are ok, but the covers are mostly lackluster. They're covering motown and early rock & roll, and these covers just don't hit the same. The compositions are ok, they're just lacking that extra energy.

There was something so clean cut and young about this album. I don't know if I enjoyed the motown covers. They just didn't have the same energy and passion as the originals. I didn't really feel like they were pleading with the mailman for their letter, but maybe they were in the British culture. I liked the original songs on the album.

I lean towards later era Beatles, but this was a happy, old-timey vibe and the covers were a fun addition.

Subjectively one of the weakest Beatles albums, inferior to it's predecessor, "Please Please Me." Not even the Beatles are foolproof. I'll give credit when credit's due. "With The Beatles" has got a few good numbers, namely "All My Loving" and "Till There Was You." The second half was a boresome listen. There was not one redeeming track. The people who rate this five stars are gaslighting themselves.

For me, the Beatles are a band that never seems to have problems with musical quality, but rather with quality of content. Most of the songs are good to listen to, but absolutely irrelevant, and I don't buy that the band feels any different, which gives the feeling of inauthenticity. I expected that the early Beatles offered more ups and downs. Absolute rivets and quirky hidden gems, that you feel are somehow unrefined, but authentic. This album proves the opposite. Completely ironed and aimed for commercial success, with the most generic and bland lyrics revolving about "love". Not exciting. Radio music. But I'd like to think that I only feel that way because the Beatles shaped the mainstream so much with their unique style and that it was revolutionary new hot shit at the time.

Though they wear their influences conspicuously with classic RnB and rock and roll covers and a brash surf sound, you can start to see the emergence of their more complex pop song writing to come. But this is them still in full teenybopper mode, jangly and sweet upbeat love songs with a funny playful side. They mastered the genre though, these songs are nearly all pretty perfectly crafted little gems and the recordings are brimming with energy.

There are some decent songs on this album, but there are also some rather poor ones too. I would probably like this album more if The Beatles hadn’t grown as much as songwriters after this.

I guess this is what made the Beatles popular, but it isn't what made the Beatles pioneers and icons.

I don’t think this should be on the list. I’m not saying it’s bad, but it’s not a consequential Beatles album compared to their others on the list. Removal of this one would lead to room for deserving entries from other unrepresented artists.

3.5 I was just thinking a few days ago that I was almost 100 days into this project and had yet to have a Beatles album and somehow, lo and behold, the next day I got one! One of the least essential Beatles albums, tbf, but a Beatles album nonetheless. Listen - I love the Beatles, probably most of their other albums are going to get 5 stars, and even this isn’t bad per se. It can’t be, with the lovely lads from Liverpool singing and playing. It’s just, other than the iconic cover, what does this really have going for it? A couple classic songs up front, then most of the rest of the album is (good) covers! It’s not the most exciting or necessary work from them. But it’s the Beatles, and there’s some classic tunes on it, so it’s still getting above 3 stars from me.

Pretty good album. Even though it´s old album, i found it catchy and simply fun. Vocals were great, instrumantation too, but you can really hear it´s a 60´s record. Probably wouldn´t skip it if a song from this album came in while driving or something, but not for an active listen. Although I can see why The Beatles were so popular even early on in their career. Pretty good record, but not for me.

This was a nice listen. But I can’t give an album with this many covers a very high score. Especially when the black artists they’re ripping off do it better.

Biggest complaint about the album is the mixing, when the vocals are in just one ear for a good portion of the time it gets hard to listen to, would easily be 4 stars otherwise.

Well made and great harmonies and catchiness.

A wild mix of classic hits, covers of soul and blues standards, and forgettable sugary pop songs. A respectable debut album from the goats with parts that unfortunately did not stand the test of time.

Every Beatles album is at least baseline good and easy enough to get through front to back, but this is on the weaker end of their catalogue.

Instrumentation was great, individual song lyrics were okay. But when you have to listen to basically the same song lyrics wise even the short runtime becomes taxing to get through.

It's... Beatles. Other people love this, I know this, but I don't understand the hold they have. A nitpick: this album seemed to be from the dawn of the stereo era and they're really EMPHASIZING it with wild unnecessary panning on all tracks. Almost stopped to find a mono version.

Weird to hear so many covers by the Beatles who were absolute masters at writing their own music. Best song is "All My Loving." It's a little unpolished but undeniably fun. While I enjoyed this, since almost half of the songs were covers, I am only awarding 3 stars.

Loved this when I first got into them in my teens (not thaaat long ago, honest). Me then would say 5/5 however the grown up cynic in me hears this differently. Perfectly serviceable but had forgotten how many covers there are on the album. Good clean fun for the hit parade but (and I feel bad for saying this) sweet but slightly bland. 3.5.

This is not a Beatles album that I've heard before. It was quite interesting, I feel like I could hear the seeds being sewn for albums to come. Funnily enough, I have heard their first album "Please Please Me" before and there are a few tracks on that I really like. All in all, I don't think it's as good as their first and I don't think it's as good as later records. It's okay

Any Beatles is practically oxygen at this point, but while I enjoyed to now retrospective power-pop sound, alot of it was remarkably forgettable. "All My Loving" is a stone classic, and I like "I Wanna Be Your Man" a lot, the rest just sort of just became "Beatles sound". Certainly, not indicative of the riches to come.

The early Beatles albums are not half as good as the later mature ones like the brilliant White Album or Sgt Peppers. If other bands would have made this album, by now we would maybe have forgotten about this one. Not best version of e.g. Mr Postman or Roll over Beethoven. Do like Money though. 3 stars enough

Really short songs. Hard to find a memorable one

I haven't spent much time with the early Beatles. I think Rubber Soul is about as early as I have listened. First impressions are that, these definitely sound like the Beatles that I know, but the cuts are definitely rougher and the songs are more direct pop-rock in structure -- less experimental. Don't Bother Me is one that I like more than the rest so far. Has an almost surf-rock vibe about it with a lived-in atmosphere to the production. I've heard other versions of Please Mister Postman. This one has the early RnR sway about it with beautiful harmonies. Roll Over Beethoven is another cover that does fine service to a classic. Straight through, this is a fine enough album, but ultimately pretty forgettable. There aren't really any "stand out" singles that commanded my attention, and a lot of the songs washed together. Even so, the production is quality and you can see this as a less evolved version of a band that would go on to change music. For me this is a 3.5 leaning 3.
