Yep that's The Beatles. You can hear the foundations of music in this, it's like hearing proto english
First listen to the Beatles. Hard to comprehend the hype for these older albums. Sounds basic but that’s just the nature of the times. Good album, didn’t dislike any song but it helps that they are so short.
good but not that good
Was genuinely surprised by this album. Wouldn't actively queue it up, but wouldn't skip it either.
It was ok
The album is fine. I’ve never loved their early work. I always appreciated their later album when they were on drugs. Those are much more interesting and creative. This album is well made and of its era. I liked the cover songs more than their originals.
Early Beatles are just ok. A couple of good songs but I really do prefer later Beatles.
Fun poppy songs. I think I was familiar with only one, but that's the only one that stuck with me. Not sure why this particular album makes the cut, unless it was just because it was early
Wait, really? I'm surprised to see this album on the list. I thought it was generally agreed that The Beatles fell into a slump with "Beatles For Sale" and "With The Beatles". In any case, I'm keen to give this album another go. I don't give it a spin nearly enough, The songwriting and rhyming conventions are pretty barebones, though the album is pleasing enough if you just go along with it. The three opening tracks are decent, though none of the remaining home-grown Beatles songs do much for me. The album falters very heavily down the center, with songs like "Don't Bother Me" and "Little Child" leaving a bit of a sour taste in my mouth, though the album ends on a solid enough note with "Devil in Her Heart" and "Money". The original material isn't much different from the covers aside from them being of a slightly-lesser quality in the songwriting department. If I'm to look at this album optimistically I think that's part of the charm. If I want to lose myself in some very of-the-time pop rock music I can just put this baby on. It's remarkably consistent in that regard. It's very difficult to comment on the merit of the covers, though I doubt anyone else is busting out the old ass showtunes for the sake of authentically reviewing this album. I guess my opinion is as good as anyone else's. The aforementioned "Til There Was You" is one of my favourites of the album - nothing like a good McCartney performance. "Devil In Her Heart" is my favourite song on the album. Some nice vocals from George Harrison (though I could have sworn it was Lennon on the lead vocals - strange). Can't complain about "Money", either. It's a classic for good reason. So, why's this album on the list? I imagine it's due to "With the Beatles" being generally more competent than "Please Please Me". It was either one or the other for this band, though I'd probably side with this album, too. In any case, lemme check the book. First album to ever sell a million copies in the UK. Motown influence. A formative moment for many of the band members. I'd quibble and moan about this album not being good enough on objective merit, but it's the "debut" album of The Beatles, man. Of course it's mandatory pre-mortem listening.
Whatever
A short and sweet Beatles record, pretty much during the height of "Beatlemania" and during a time where record companies expected multiple albums per year ("Please Please Me" was released just eight months prior). Hard to deny the talent and charm early on in their careers, but listening to this within the context of the present and their entire discography at my disposal is interesting. Yes, the group would blossom from a creative sense in just a few albums after this and they were still doing some early motown/rock n roll covers here. The original material is enjoyable though, if not a little cookie cutter looking back on this era of music. I can understand the inclusion of at least one pre-1965 Beatles album on this list given the initial hype and their ensuing artistic evolution.
I am very familiar with psychedelic era Beatles, but really haven't spent much time with the early Beatles era. It's genuinely wild referring to these as different eras considering it was only a few years between this album and when they started getting into psychedelic music. Incredible evolution over such a short career! Overall, I enjoyed this album. It's not something I'd listen to all the time, but I can see myself throwing it on from time to time.
quite liked this one, wish it wasn't in stereo though. official beatles album rankings so far: 1. with the beatles 2. rubber soul
certainly their weakest album
Early Beatles are not my jam
has its classics
Do wop Beatles. Some great tracks that tease their future textural intricacies, but not my go to if I'm in the mood for the Fab Four.
Early pop Beatles is my least favorite Beatles. All My Loving is a great pop song though and is the big hit from this album. There are several covers on this album and Till There Was You is a good example. Please Mr. Postman and Roll Over Beethoven are not as successful. Never cover Chuck Berry unless you happen to go back in time. I know they love Motown, but these are not great covers. Money (That's What I Want) works though and one of their more famous efforts.
Underwhelming relative to other Beatles offerings. 3.2
Not their best work, but there has been worse music on this list
Never listened to a Beatles album before this was good not great
i prefer please please me
So, the Beatles is not really my thing, but I can get why these guys become so huge.
Already listened
3.5
This is my least favorite Beatle's album. However I still think it's alright. Only one song I don't like the album is short. and very catchy like every. Beatle's album.
Ça va, si on veut comprendre l'origine des Beatles et le phénomène, mais en soi pas si mémorable
Wish I could give half stars. Not my favourite Beatles album but yknow still fairly enjoyable 3.5/5
Nice listen, but I’ve definitely been spoiled by White Album being one of their first I listened to
It's a strange one to have on the list. Basically business as usual after Please Please Me. Not particularly groundbreaking
#1 really fun intro vibe with backing vocals in the yeah the vocals 2. Good filler ig, still a good and fun song just not as much of a standout as the others 3. Really fun song great song ofc once again the combination/ zusammenspiel of lead and backing vocals make it interesting and soft and they seem to play with vocals / add layaers with them more than other instruments 4. More mellow vocals kinda 5. More fun cranked up vocal with more instruments 7. More modern sounding lead vocals while melodies/ bakcing v/ instruments sound more old fashioned 8. Classic 60s rocknroll sounding riff and guitar sound, while hearing some more iconic beatles sounds (clapping hands as beat, oohs in the vocals) 9. Again more old fashioned rocknroll vibe 10. Really nice vocals, once again together with backing, vocals sound more modern even, while the instruments sound old fashioned esp syrong simple bass, some experimentation with the vocals even 11. Fun upbeat vibe, nice break away/variation catches you again Rest is kinda similar to vibe before again Summary: this 1963 album is definitely a document of the time, it has classic 60s rock'n'roll sounds, with vintage guitar tones, strong punchy bass accents and layered vocals. It is clear though that the group was transforming these classic traditional aspects, the guitar is becoming more rocky, the vocals sound quite modern even on certain songs and you can hear parts of their iconic sounds with beats being clapped out and guitars becoming more electrifying. They play with the vocals nicely, there is some experimentation in pauls vocals and the interplay between lead and backing vocals is so fun and a big part of what makes the songs and really engages listeners. Just for personal preference though, this gets a 3/5 i think.
It was alright, prefer their later work. 3 stars.
it wont be long- 4 all ive got to do- 4 all my loving- 4 dont bother me- 4 little child- oh thats not... till there was you- 5 please mister postman- ill always think of that one vine. rip legend <3. not the beatles obvi, they should rot. 4 or 5 roll over beethoven- 4 hold me tight- 4 you really got a hold on me- 4 i wanna be your man- 4 devil in her heart- 4 not a second time- 3 or 4 money- 4. give black people theyre music back. its insane to me how americans hated black music until british people stole it and played it back to them and suddenly they loved it idc. at least it was short
Traditional rock and roll made me want to swing dance again (other than Devil in her heart, which is a fun salsa segue). Guitar occasionally takes it up a notch. I imagine it would have been great live and a bit looser. I wanna be your man is the highlight.
édes szíveim, imádom őket, de ez bizony rossz nagyon. :D
Pleasant enough, surprising how many of the "hits" were actually covers
Not my favourite, but still, it's the Beatles.
A fun collection of tunes, lots of covers, The Beatles still working to hit their stride. Was listenable, but not groundbreaking. I do wonder if The Beatles really deserve 7 spots on this list. I mean, yes, they're ~The Beatles~, but there are a lot of other deserving artists out there. I digress. Standout track: Till There Was You (Music Man, ftw!)
Some wonderful tunes and sounds, and a precursor of amazing things to come. By no means is this a great album.
"I don't like it," said my aunt of "With The Beatles". She was 8 when this album was released. We had just euthanised one of her beloved cats. I, however, liked it. I wouldn't put it near the top of the greatest albums pyramid; (confession: it probably wouldn't make the cut for a place on the pyramid.) that said, it was 33 minutes well spent.
1. It Won't Be Long - 7/10 2. All I've Got to Do - 9/10 3. All My Loving - 10/10 4. Don't Bother Me - 7.5/10 5. Little Child - 7/10 6. Till There Was You - 8/10 7. Please Mr. Postman - 8/10 8. Roll Over Beethoven - 7/10 9. Hold Me Tight - 7/10 10. You Really Got A Hold On Me - 7.5/10 11. I Wanna Be Your Man - 7/10 12. Devil In Her Heart - 6.5/10 13. Not A Second Time - 7/10 14. Money (That's What I Want) - 8/10
Okay. Why has it been over 13 months since my last Beatles album? I got 4 of them in the first 6 months or so of the project and then, for some reason, I had to wait 13 months for another! Whatever. In the time since then, I've become more passionate about my enjoyment of the Beatles albums I've heard. However, the four I've heard before today are all considered must-listens. Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper, Rubber Soul, and the White Album are seen as some of the greatest albums of all time. Well, okay, Rubber Soul isn't as big as the other three, but it's still an essential listen! With the Beatles is not an essential listen. You may be wondering? Why was this Beatles album put on the list? Well, I don't think With the Beatles was put on because of the album specifically. This, to me, is effectively the representative of the band's early days, which are still quite important to the development of the band we've all known and loved for the past 60+ years. There's something oddly charming about early Beatles songs. Like, this is nowhere near as good as the stuff they would make later. Let's get that out of the way. Compared to albums like Abbey Road and Sgt. Pepper, With the Beatles is just worse. However, I still enjoyed my time With the Beatles. It's cute seeing some standard rock and roll that seems like child's play today knowing that these guys would go on to write masterpieces like "A Day in the Life" and the whole Abbey Road medley. But for now, we get simple love songs like "All My Loving" and "It Won't Be Long" interspersed with some covers. I don't know what it is, but there's something about an album like this that I like a lot more than something like an early Rolling Stones album. Maybe it's the fact that there's not as much blatant misogyny. Maybe the Beatles are just more charming characters. Maybe I'm just biased. Who knows? With the Beatles is a fun time, but not one that stands toe-to-toe with other albums of the time and albums that would follow. I still enjoyed it though. High 3/5.
Crazy how the Beatles went from this to fucking Revolution 9
Not my favorite Beatles album, but a good one nonetheless. 3.2/5
This is NOT The Beatles I love. That comes later. What you do have here are great harmonizing and genius of George Harrison on guitar.
It's the Beatles, if you like that kinda thing you'll like this
A bunch of catchy pop-rock songs. The quality Beatles vocal melodies are there, but the songs are simpler, more straightforward rock n roll. But it’s still not as melodically lush, musically advanced, or arranged as interestingly as their later work. It’s good for what it is.
I Want to Hold Your Hand was one of my all time favorites for the Beatles, but this album is not at the top.
It was just OK. Wasn't great, wasn't terrible; it was just fine.
Didn't expect to know most of these. They have their own sound to these classics, but to me the album sounds like a bunch of greatest hits/covers. Lennon's voice is best when raw.
#notmyBeatles
Early Beatles. 1963. Catchy call refrain. Blues riffs. An archetypal Beatles sound. 2 - 3 minute songs. Little minuets. At the risk of being arrested for sacrilege. The early stuff is boy band blues. Personal preference, I much prefer the later stuff once they let George Harrison loose. That said a few catchy as hell tunes: It won’t be long, Don’t Bother Me, Please Mr Postman (cover), Roll Over Beethoven (cover), You Really Got a Hold on Me (cover) and Money (That’s What I Want) (cover)
acho esse o mais fraquinho deles...
esse eh o segundo piorzim deles, na minha humilde opinião tem please mr postman então tá valendo. bom album!
A great, heavily blues influenced, album. But I can’t help but feel like every single Beatles album doesn’t belong on this list. Like did they truly grow enough in these early days to have .01% of all the albums here. I wish there was a rule for 2-3 albums per artist.
Pretty good, but not their bes album
Dang. It turns out even early mid Beatles are pretty damn good. Not nearly as inspired as their post Revolver output, but you can see the flashes of where they will go in the not too distant future. 3.5 Stars
Repeat listen
mid
Little bursts of pure nostalgia. Supremely good pop. Some good rocking tunes...Roll Over Beethoven and Money. Stand outs for me Till there was you and You've Really got a hold on me. Lyrics to Little Child sound off to me now.
its early beatles stuff. fun, but isn’t gonna impress anyone in existence anymore lol
With the Beatles - not quite in their stride yet but you can see why they stood out from the other Merseyside bands. Paul and John's voices meld so perfectly and the original compositions are good.
All I´ve Got to Do foi a minha faixa favorita sem sombra de dúvidas. Muito boa. Demais músicas são boas também.
Dont like
They already sound great, and in brief glimpses you get to see the exceptional talent they later displayed in bucket loads. If they never went on to write another record, I think With The Beatles would be considered a strong, c-tier early 1960s record with excellent pop sensibilities and gorgeous harmonies. As a Beatles record it receives a far greater level of expectation than it can handle.
The Beatles get a lot more interesting as musicians once they get past their generic pop rock era and don't have to deal with shrieking fans on stage.
The Beatles might be the greatest band of all time. This does not account for their early albums, which pretty much sounded like 50's/60's rock. This was before they were an interesting band. Not a bad listen, but boring compared to their later works.
Far from my favorite Beatles album, but not bad. Obviously it's an important step in their evolution, so from a historical perspective it's worth a listen. The trouble is that the overabundance of covers serves to break the spell for me and makes me want to go listen to those artists instead. It feels like they didn't have the confidence to stand on their own compositions, so they pulled in other songs they liked to support what they had and avoid a potential commercial failure. That makes this a mixed bag for me. None of it is especially bad, but it pales in comparison to their albums that followed.
Catchy, for sure. Still feels a bit tethered to the rock n' roll era, which is a bit of a stale sound now. These guys have a bit of talent though, think they'll go on to do better things. 6.5 / 10 Best track/s: Please Mr Postman, Till There Was You
Even further from the fuzz.
Amazing that they sounded almost fully formed this early on. A solid album although I feel Motown did a lot of the heavy lifting for this. Far from my favourite Beatles album but still good.
the covers were fun, this is a beatles album i dont usually pull for, so it was nice to give it some attention
Solid. Full of classics. Lacking variety.
Fun and charming. Lots of covers.
My third Beatles album and I’m not even 50 albums in! I liked Abbey Road very much and I still liked Revolver though I wasn’t as impressed by Revolver as by Abbey Road. This album With The Beatles was rather mono-thematic. While I’ve come to learn that they always sing a lot about love, I appreciate it when they don’t. Still, there are some bangers and bops on here that I can enjoy. I’m giving it 3 stars because it’s six covers songs.
Mor white dudes
Not their best. Definitely on their sappier teen pop love albums. But still great
Better than I thought it would be, clearly their earlier pop-blues
Not the best of the The Beatles albums, but an interesting listening though.
Though a far cry from the excellence of their later albums, one can start to hear the sounds that would go on to cement The Beatles as one of the all time greats. Whilst not essential listening by any stretch of the imagination, there's some good stuff on here that's well worth checking out.
3/5 but still a great Beatles album, especially the first 3-4 tracks, which are Lennon-McCartney originals. I love the youthful excitement in "It Won't Be Long" and "All My Loving" and the pretty sustained vocalizations in "All I've Got to Do". Almost half of the album is covers - was that a normal thing of the time? And mostly Motown covers, where the originals are much better imo. I think this shows how much Motown has influenced the Beatles and helped propel them into stardom in their early careers. Even "All I've Got to Do" is very Smokey Robinson coded, and it works. Unfortunately, the later part of the album runs out of that steam. Even with their Motown covers, I can see how fans went crazy for the Beatles. They are so charming here and just so innocent and simple in their emotional lyrics.
A contender for my least favorite Beatles album, but it's still not a bad listen. 3/5
Culture vulture Beatles. Neat.
It sounds so much of its time, in a way that later albums don't. Maybe it deserves to be on this list by virtue of it showing the Beatles evolution towards greater things, but in it's own right? Nah.
Bra pop låtar int det bästa Beatles har att komma med Bästa låten: Please Mister Postman
yeah (yeah!) yeah (yeah!) yeah (yeah!)
Lots of covers. Probably too many covers. But an interesting look back to when the Fab 4 were just getting started. Influential if not a bit dated.
3.0 - Ok
doesn't deserve to be in this list, in some ways its a cash grab, but its ok
These kids are pretty talented…I hope they make something of themselves. As far as Beatles albums go, nowhere near my favorite.
solid beatles record
It was ok. The Beatles is just not my thing.
Starts off fun, but goes fairly stale after a while. Fun fact - this is not their best album.
Classic Beatles. I prefer their later stuff, but not bad.
Too many covers to give it anything more than a 3. Enjoyable listen.
Just a band. In all honesty this isn't a great album, but it's ok. It's just a bunch of songs. Compared to what would come later, it's like a sketch. Really, if you give this a five, what are you giving Sgt Pepper or the White Album? And covers. Really? I know it's hard to judge what the impact and feeling was like back then, but this is now. Three at best. Do better, Beatles. Three stars.
This is basically prom night Beatles. All suits and clean haircuts. It’s a polite, good time. The covers are kind of adorable, even when they’re a little half-baked, and there's a flash here and there of what they’d grow into, but it’s more sock hop than stadium anthem. Spins: 3 Playlist Additions: - All My Loving - Please Mister Postman - Roll Over Beethoven - You Really Got A Hold On Me - Money
Pretty solid (of course) and the covers are good versions. Some of the originals are pretty forgettable. I would go 3.5--when it came out it was a 10, dropping for being a bit basic these days.
How do you rate an album that almost every song you’ve ever heard has somewhere in its DNA? I suppose the question has to be: would I put this on for pleasure, and I wouldn’t. It isn’t bad by any means, but it wouldn’t be the Beatles album I would choose to spin.
This is fine. To be expected for early beatles
Lopu jo
This is one Beatles album that could be left off this list. At this point this inclusion is just Brit Bias or fanboyism. I generally enjoy the Beatles, yet wouldn't call myself a huge fan. This album just drones on, and doesn't really stand out at all in their catalog of music. When the album ended, I found myself audibly saying, "Thank god".
The first 4 songs are surprisingly excellent for early era Beatles, and the cover of Please Mister Postman is good (hard to mess up in all honesty), but yeah the rest of this, particularly the covers, aren't very special. I understand the importance of this album in the grand scheme of the bands development, as well as it's wider influence on it's peers and successors in terms of The Beatles embracing increased maturity and a greater control of their artistic image and creativity, but I'm not sure you need to listen to this before you die. There are far greater Beatles albums, you could stick to those and take away far more, sure you'd be lacking some background on the musical path they took, but the better stuff still holds up. 3 Stars.
1. It Won't Be Long - can be buried in a hole far away from my cochlears. 2. All I've Got To Do - Liked. Downloaded. 3. All My Loving - off their 2nd album that's awesome. Classic. Like the harmonies a lot. 4. Don't Bother Me - love the percussion in this song a lot. It reminds me of Latin American samba. Downloaded. 5. Little Child - meh. 6. Till There Was You - love the acoustic guitar. Downloaded. 7. Please Mister Postman - yeesh my poor cochlears. I don't think I like this song? Every cover is bad on my ears. Skipped halfway. 8. Roll Over Beethoven - quintessential early Beatles sound pero no download for me. 9. Hold Me Tight - meh. 10. You Really Got a Hold On Me - those opening notes are so iconic and only meant for The Miracles. pass. 11. I Wanna Be Your Man - meh. 12. Devil In Her Heart - meh. 13. Not A Second Time - do love the piano a lot in this song. 14. Money (That's What I Want) - stronger cover than the others. Love the breakdown at the end. Not really one that I would download but still strong. Piano by George Martin ("The 5th Beatle") Final Thoughts - 14 songs and the entire album is 31 minutes. Gnarly different standards now a days. I would give this a 3/5 but add half a point for it being a quintessential stand alone Beatles album. Rating: 3.5/5
More Beatles already? I do think this album has almost all the songs I enjoy of theirs (mainly because of Across the Universe) so this will probably be my favorite album out of the 4 or 5 I have feeling that I'll be listening as part of this project.
Definitely sounds like The Beatles. For such an iconic album cover, it’s mainly all covers and songs I have never heard that sound very similar. 6/10
Found it okay, maybe was comparing to other songs of The Beatles I like, or wasn't in the mood...
Very pleasant album. I enjoyed the listen.
It’s one of my least favourite Beatles albums. Has good songs, but it kind of disappoints
Haut mich jetzt net vom Hocker, bin aber auch kein riesen Beatles Fan.
I’m glad the Beatles evolved from this sound, this is everything they ended up rebelling against by the end.
Not the best Beatles is still more memorable than a lot of what’s out there. This and A Hard Day’s Night are both 3.5, that got a 4 so giving this a 3.
Warum die drums alle links und vocals rechts
Interesting to get this album immediately after Little Richard. It clearly takes so much from LR. As a whole, this album works a little better for me. While LR maintained a high intensity throughout, this album rolls and crests with a little more emotional variation. It keeps the upbeat tempo throughout, just like LR, but the individual songs leave a little more space to emotionally breathe. But there is no “With the Beatles” without “Here’s Little Richard.”
Was ok. Not many of the songs grabbed me and I guess it was very samey to a lot of stuff I've already listened to, but listening to it in 2025 defo doesnt do it any favours
Some nice little dittys but not that interesting overall. Mad that there was only 2 years between this and Rubber Soul. The cover of a Money is good but the Secret Machines version is better (sponsored post). Overall, and unlike almost all their other 33s, lacks a big single or two.
It was pretty good, not on the level of the 2 other Beatles albums I've reviewed so far - but they were from later in their catalogue.
so much beatles on this here website
Only 13 albums in and here is my 2nd Beatles record! This is not my Beatles, but it’s pretty enjoyable with a couple of strong Lennon/McCartney compositions and, dare I say, a very enjoyable cover of Please Mister Postman. I don’t listen to this one often and I can’t see that changing, but it’s a fun record. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Still good, but somehow just misses the usual greatness associated with The Beatles.
3.5
BLAH PEOPLE BEETLES
6.5/10 My score makes it sound like I didn’t really like it, when I did. But this just isn’t my favourite Beatles sound. The melodies are there, the songs are good (a lot of covers gives it a “let’s bang this out” feel) but they are very much route one rockers. Excellent ones though. The vocals of Lennon and drums of Ringo carried this album. Best: Money
This album is really the impetus of modern rock and roll. Sure it takes plenty of influence from the likes of Chuck Berry (they even cover a song here) and the other 50’s guitar blues rock greats, but I don’t think rock would have evolved into what it has without the Beatles, and beginning with this album. That being said, it shows its age stylistically and its one of those albums where I think to myself “if I’m going to listen to the Beatles, it isn’t going to be this”. ‘This’ is great, but I much prefer the later Beatles sound.
Didn’t like it to start off with, enjoyed it by the end
I am a Beatles fan so I may be bias, but this has the hits ("It Won't Be Long", "All My Loving", "Till There Was You") and a batch of covers that they made their own ("Roll Over Beethoven", "Please Mr. Postman", "Money (That's What I Want)"). Not my favorite period in Beatledome but the good stuff is too good to ignore.
Pleasant to listen to, cute songs but really nothing special
I have a mixed relationship with the Beatles. I have listened to their best work so many times that I fear I have become desensitized to their greatness and their influence. But even in keeping my own subjective opinions caused by massive social over-playing in mind, I think even the most objective among us will agree that this is not the Beatles at their best. John and Paul had still not found their voice, instead focusing on covers and vaguely creepy love songs. But even the Beatles worst is better than many bands’ best. 3.3/5
Considering myself "familiar" with the Beatles, didn't occur to me how little of the earlier stuff I had listened to. Formulaic themes, yes, but sweet (& teeny song times) Glad they moved it up a notch or 5 though 😅
Schönes aber nich spektakuläres frühes Beatles Album, mit dem Songs „All My Loving“ & „Please Mr. Postman“. Insgesamt etwas zu viel Beat und zu wenig Gefühl.
These guys have potential
2.5
I have little love for the older stuff The Beatles made - it's just not my cup of tea. A lot of it feels samey, and the vocal work just doesn't do it for me. That said, I recognize that there are still some good tracks here. 'Till There Was You' was my fave from this album.
It's hilarious how average this is
Houmous & Chutney wrote and performed the soundtrack to the hit 2003 film Beethoven’s 5th. It almost didn’t happen. Len had a crisis of conscience. He’d promised John way back when that he’d never perform in any sort of tribute to John or Yoko and we agreed we’d never cover Roll Over Beethoven. How do you follow The Beatles effort? So few people ever understood that the entire premise of all 6 films was that Beethoven the dog WAS John Lennon. That’s why we did the 5th. We got offered all of them. Only when we got to the 5th did we realise no one knew so it was fine. 3.2
Never rated them highly and this didn’t change it
We're still with the early Beatles here, so there are a few covers (Please Mr Postman, Roll Over Beethoven, Money (That's What I Want), and others), but they're done very well, very well indeed. They do manage to avoid Difficult Second Album Syndrome on their own compositions - All My Loving went on to be a classic in their stable, and the others can hold their heads high. All in all, if you're a fan you'll know it, if not give it a try, you won't go far wrong.
Beatles at their best? No. Beatles at their most industrious? Maybe... 14 songs, 6 covers, 2 LPs in under a year as was the typical fare of early 60s music. The covers are tights, especially the cover of the Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman", the original songs are serviceable with "All My Loving" being the obvious peak but it's obvious when that and that alone tends to appear on any greatest hit compilation album...
[3]
It's The Beatles. I'm sure everyone has heard 90% of these songs on this album without seeking them out. I understand that they changed the course of music, etc. ect. I think this album fine. Okay. Incredibly listenable. There's not a lot there for me to come back to. Money (That's What I Want) was the standout track to me.
3.9
classic. not my favorite beatles era but does have one of my favorite covers of "Till there was you".
En ollut aiemmin kuunnellut tätä levyä, vaikka olen kuunnellut paljon Beatlesia. Hyvä, ei oma suosikki.
Pretty good ngl
Relativ gut, Beatels halt 3/5
A good example of Beatles MK1. Before they took their role as innovators of rock n roll music to come, they were mastering the early 60s pop scene. There are a handful of very noteworthy things here. The skill in playing, the normalization of the band writing their own music (since a novelty at the time), and their first artistic take on the cover art. This was also the first British album to sell a million copies. All of this would be influential. However, the thing you hear all the time about this period is "It's not their best work". Hard to argue with that. If the Beatles had stopped here, they'd still have been an important band, but wouldn't have still been a household name today. They'd have been talked about in terms of nostalgia and academic history of popular music only. Their true place in Western culture was still to come but the early hints are there. The Beatles were already different from the rest at this stage.
It's a good record and includes my favorite Beatles song but a few too many covers. Still a fun listen. Favorite: All My Loving Would I listen to it again: Yes
The Beatles second album is solid, concise and nothing wasted coming in at 33:07. Good batch of songs, great opener but lacks in flow, and what I consider some of the better work.
Some bops by kind of twee
Is it weird that I've never listened to this? The 60s aren't really my era... it's okay, it's cheery, I could have a lil dance to this quite happily. I don't think it's the best Beatles album by any stretch.
The Beatles are great, no argument there. They have many albums that belong on this list. This isn’t one of them. Some really good stuff here but it doesn’t hold a candle to their best.
Waaaaaait a minute. Is every Beatles record on this list? Because that’d be ridiculous.
It’s definitely good but it’s not the best by any means. I did enjoy it more than I was expecting
3.5
Seems like 3 is a harsh rating but let it be known I still enjoy and respect this record. It starts strong, then there's some duds, then it picks back up again. I like the acid Beatles.
My ears liked this album but not for the same reasons.
++: All My Loving, Little Child, Till There Was You, Roll Over Beethoven, Hold Me Tight, I Wanna Be Your Man, Money (That's What I Want) +: It Won't Be Long, All I've Got to Do, Don't Bother Me, Please Mr. Postman, You Really Got a Hold on Me, Devil in Her Heart, Not a Second Time 7,6/10
2/19/25. Straightforward songs, but catchy. The Beatles had something magical at the time of this release, and to think they would only get better.
Good, but not great. I see why Beatlemania kicked off around this time, but the Beatles have much better projects.
The Beatles originals on this record are, of course, not bad at all. I particularly enjoy 'It Wont Be Long'. They certainly wrote thirst trap music. But the covers here are jot great, bland versions of american hits.
Nice album, very cheerful but all songs sounded pretty similar. Still enjoyed it though
Not my favorite, but there's some bangers.
Most Beatles album contain some good songs, some average songs and one or two awful songs. This one is different, I find it uniformly bland. It's mostly plain R&R with not much to say about it. Not bad, just meh. All My Loving may be my relative favourite, but the lyrics are cheesy. Oh, and Money, but that's not their song (and not better than the original version). Maybe the better more creative (more drugs infused?) music was only kicking off a bit later in the 1960s, in general and also for the Beatles.
Good but not great. Some moments of true pop genius, some mailed in afterthoughts.
An album before The Beatles actually were good. The songs are short, the lyrics laughable and many of the songs are covers. I've given many of their later albums 5/5 but this one shouldn't be on the 1001 album list as so many of their other works are better.
Nice to hear the classics. Not a huge Beatles fan, but undeniably great.
I suppose I can appreciate it for what it was and why it was on the list, but was pumped to have some Beatles bangers on a Friday and was disappointed with what I got :/
It was ok
Probably one of the weakest Beatles albums in the context of their whole catalog, but still very good the context of the era. The Lennon-McCartney penned tracks are generally all very good, especially the first 3 tracks and Not a Second Time. The covers are fine, but not something to really come back to.
It’s the early Beatles. Good, but far from a favorite.
bog standard beatles
I get why it's on the list, and I'm tempted to rate it higher because it's the Beatles, but it's nearly half cover versions, and they're just lacking a bit of... something. Maybe it's just too polished compared to their rockier live performances before they were picked up.
Classic Beatles, a bit early for me but still a gem
Love the Beatles but this is one too much of the same love song.
Primitive Beatles, although not as primitive as the earlier stuff. Surprisingly sophisticated chord progressions lurk within the rock n roll bangers, and I suppose this shouldn’t be too surprising given the amount of song in their repertoire. Definitely an album of singles with plenty of covers. Their originals definitely better than the covers but those portend what’s to come
Good in spots. Bad in spots. Potential is there.
I'm not huge on early Beatles, but this album exceeded my memory of it. Some very good songs on this, even it gets a touch annoying by the end of its 33-minute runtime. It's a real feat that I didn't mind listening to their version of "Please Mr. Postman" after a different version of that song was burned into my brain on the repeating Chuck E. Cheese soundtrack when I worked there for a summer in high school.
Early Beatles - I love the Mr. postman cover. The traditional rock riffs just ooze early Beatlemania. I can get it - slightly edgier than previous rock and lyrics that made the teens swoon.
Young Beatles. What makes them Beatles is in this album, but they get interesting with later albums.
Eh
...
they were singing a beatles song in that vine!??! (mr postman) by far the most boring beatles album ive heard so far
I love the Beatles, but this isn’t my favorite album.
3.5 harmony and early rock energy
Meh, this is not the Beatles at their best. But that makes sense- they're young and new in this (it's their second studio album). Notable and included on this list due to what the Beatles became, but not solely based on this body of work. Til There Was You & Money were enjoyable. 5.5/10 (2.75/5)
Just like usual, I feel I appreciate and respect the Beatles more than I like them. Their impact can't be understated, but I personally just don't click with their music. And that's totally fine - not everything is for everyone. But I can still appreciate it
Not my cup of tea. Too poppy.
Overplayed
3 = didn’t hate it, but won’t listen again. The Beatles being the Beatles.
It was ok. Nothing really interesting from The Beatles.
Liked some of the classic covers, but this is like the 5th best Beatles album
78% Best: All My Loving; Don't Bother Me; Please Mister Postman; Hold Me Tight Must-Hear? Nah. You can tell the Beatles are still improving their songwriting
With The Beatles is not The Beatles at their best, nowhere near it, mostly because half the album is covers of songs done loads better by their originators (and there are betters covers done since too). A couple of strong original songs help, and the overall vibe is very listenable mostly because of the covers (Motown is great and they've just decided to hitch themselves to it here for whatever reason), but it's a 3/5 at best, which I suppose for me is generous given I'm not a Beatles fan really.
This is the Beatles whilst they were still a twinkly pop band - it's mostly straight down the line poppy rock and roll, which is decently done, but not fundamentally that interesting. Doesn't really signal what they'd go on to do, but a decent enough pop album so 3/5.
I can see how this was a new sound back in the day, but it sounds kinda...ordinary? And the guitars are a bit rough on Roll Over Beethoven compared to the original. But it's OK I suppose.
Well it's clear they're having a blast recording this, and for a first time listen it's... Fine. Not for me but I can see the appeal, just a bit too one note for the most part. I know a few of these songs from radio play, and obviously some of the ones they're covering - I aassume it's harkening back to their cavern Club days with these. Like I Say, it's perfectly servicable but a bit bland, I prefer the Beatles later on when they got weirder.
Another Beatles album - two in succession. George still gets the best song prize - taste is a personal thing, but I always engage most with his music. However I do think Lennon and McCartney were writing better songs than most of the people they were covering. I described Lennon in my previous review as an intense ball of creativity, and you can hear the urgency to get his output out there. Perhaps it was the way things were done then, but it sounds like they were rushing to get albums out during these first three or four years, and it would be interesting to hear what they'd have come up with with a bit more time and without filling the album with covers.
pretty good album
It’s good
Sounds like sophomore Beatles. Oh, look, it is!
Some good covers
My eyes glaze over halfway in … but the fiercest numbers are front loaded, and, dare I say, portend awesome things to come. I can’t help but feel like better bands were out doing more interesting things in 1963 – but maybe this record needed to be made so they’d never again be so bloody twee. A 3 by the Beetles standards, so unfair in many ways. But I’m willing to say it: it’s only OK.
I liked this album more than Rubber Soul... but I attribute that to this album having more songs from Across the Universe on it. Still not a Beatles fan, but it's cool to listen to the original songs that inspired the songs in that musical. It's fine. Nothing great
Cute. First half kinda repetitive. Second half has some covers. Only 1-2 actually bad songs. Everything sounds like I wanna hold your hand
There are a lot of classics on this one. Many songs I've heard at one point or another; I didn't realize they were all on this album. Favorite: Don't Bother Me.
First time listening to a whole Beatles album. Really enjoyed the pulsing, frantic nature of the sound, drums especially. It Won't Be Long probably the highlight of the album.
Enjoyable listen, but prefer later albums more 3/5
Boomer marketing of the Beatles as the ~greatest~ band is hilarious. English boy band sucking the life out of black music and re-packaging it. Listen to some of the original versions vs. the Beatles covers below lol. Barrett Strong - Money (That's What I Want) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeVx1C73o8k Chuck Berry - Roll Over Beethoven https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOrMg3pY7hw The Marvelettes - Please Mr. Postman https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=425GpjTSlS4 Smokey Robinson & The Miracles - You Really Got A Hold On Me https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdDnqSFYXFs
This album is enjoyable, but not great. Most of the songs on here are pretty forgettable and have the stereotypical Beatles sound. “All My Loving” might be the only great Beatles song on here, but the cover versions of “Please Mr. Postman” and “Roll Over Beethoven” are also pretty good.
I think it's difficult to rate this album without thinking of the later Beatles albums which had such an impact on rock and pop. While appreciating The Beatles' contributions, I've never really cared to listen to their music - maybe it's so ubiquitous. For example, I doubt I've ever played this album before, but I was familiar with every track on this album. From reading the background of this album on the Wikipedia page, I can see that The Beatles, their management and their producer were begining to flex creative muscles (over sleeve design, for example) in the face of what looks like complacency on the label's part. And while this album was part of the move into international stardom, I don't really think the songs stand out particularly to me - still too much focussed on girl-boy relationships without real subtlety. I think the strongest songs are some of the cover versions. I suppose in retrospect there's a direction of travel to be perceived.
No private Spotify session used. I have listened to later works of The Beatles a lot, good to revisit their roots when they were white boys doing black rock and roll, but I will always go back to their later stuff if I want to listen to the Beatles.
Even if the Beatles went on to do very little I think this would still fairly popular, but a couple of weak points 3.5*
didn’t sound as beatley as I would’ve liked
solid beatles album, but not one of their best. i do really love a lot of the covers, especially “till there was you” from the music man!
3 out of 5. Didn't think a so far back Beatles album made the list, but it's not the worst one to me.
It’s weird, because The Beatles obviously ended up being really good, but the first 4 albums are kind of meh to me. 6 covers and 8 originals on this one. I dunno man, I’m glad they did all this stuff in order to become they band they ended up, but without all of the Mania that surrounded them at this time, the music isn’t very exciting to me now.
You really need to be a Beatles fan to work through this album. The sound is very spotty and the songs are very similar. Some of their early hits on on this and it’s very much a album for the early 1960’s
Beatles are fine but not my jam. Some nice ones in there though.
Not their best of the Beatles’ discography. It was ok.
I do like The Beatles a lot but their early output is not my favorite. This album has some nice pop songs but it doesn't excite me like Revolver or The White Album. All I've Got To Do is my favorite. Little Child is embarrassing. I'd much rather listen to the later albums starting from Rubber Soul.
It’s the early Beatles. Very 50s/60s. I can see why it was popular when it came out. Nice variety to the tracks. Rating: 3
Till There Was You is the best song on the album
Good but all blended together
It is so sad this is on here, because The Beates have at least 8 better albums, so this really takes up a place from another great album from a different artist. That being said, it is a great pop/rock album.
John Lennon said this album defines the Beatles sound, so I guess I have to trust him, but they have so many that are better.
You know. It's The Beatles. What do you want me to say that hasn't been said by fans, historians, contrarians, and everyone in between? Anyway, I prefer their earlier work here. So there you go.
Meh
They probably did it better than anyone before, but by today's standards it's just alright. Production is especially bad. The technology wasn't better yet. The songs are good. I prefer their later work. Favorite song: all my loving.
I listened to a remaster and was not impressed; voices in the right channel and instruments in the left channel, not exactly revolutionary! Early Beatles are not that impressive, like a boy band but they can all play and the harmonic vocals are the highlight. All the tracks on this album are about girls (except for 'Roll Over Beethoven' and 'Money') which rather limits its variety but the songs do work well individually, even without the production that enriches later work. Given its era, it is really good but it is what comes later that raises this up as a group that can grow and grow.
33 minutes long 14 songs All songs pretty short The album was ok was nice to listen to but wouldn’t listen to it again. 6/10 Good Beatles album 1/1001
I’m a huge Beatles fan and I can confidently say this shouldn’t be on the list. Great for the Beatles completions, and there are some good songs but this is not one of their essential albums. 3/5
I would vote 4 or 5 stars if it was only the first half, it’s still interesting to see the peeks of brilliance through the catchy pop tunes
quite liked this one, im not a massive beatles fan, so this album wont be getting above a three, but it is deffo a fun album, i did enjoy it!! :))
Proof that the Beatles started out as a saccharine boy band that would eventually morph into one of the most definitive music makers ever. If these songs were released for the first time today, they'd sound no different from other boy bands.
Mostly sounds like generic 50s surfer rock. Definitely before they had their own sound.
I don't know they just sound like the beach boys or early 60s surf rock. A far cry from later stuff.
Till there was you is the most underrated beatles song fact
The amazing thing with this album is that within two years of it, they made Rubber Soul, then Revolver a year later, and Sgt Pepper's another year later. You really wouldn't guess from this collection of songs.
This was ok, but the best songs on the album, Please Mister Postman and Money (That’s What I Want), are both covers that, while good, are no better than the originals. Maybe a necessary stepping stone to greatness, but on its own merits this is just a 3
It’s the Beatles so it’s good but every cover just made me want to listen to a better version.
Average
Fine but not great. I get that they changed music but the Beatles just don't do much for me
It's actually better than other Beatles records I've heard. Still not great. But better. Ish. The opening track and Roll Over Beethoven are pretty cool. Slightly generous 3. Probably a 2.75
The problem with this is its so hard not to compare it to all the other Beatles work with so many better songs further into their careers. I’m guessing at the time this was a popular album but now it feels like bit of a filler in-between albums and most of the songs don’t really grab the attention. Not rubbish but given they’ve done so many better songs this album just doesn’t really do much for me.
Clearly the early stages of a band that would progress significantly over the upcoming years. Not sure the tracks on this justified the Beatlemania that followed, or perhaps it was a classic case of style over substance just like other boy bands that followed. I wonder what would have happened if East 17 had pulled a strawberry fields out of the bag?
Three Beatles albums in fairly quick succession, and I’m coming to two conclusions. Firstly, I prefer their early stuff. The poppier more r&b based stuff just seems more what was truly unique and exciting about them. And it certainly gets me more excited over the later slower more psych type stuff, which while they were influential they weren’t unique in that style/genre (and certainly not the best). Secondly, Harrison wrote the best song on this one, Abbey Road and White Album. Guess I was suckered into the wide assumption he was the untalented one. More fool me. Anyway, I enjoyed listening to this, but there are too many covers (not all that great either) to give it a big score.
You had to be there.
How The Beatles were already this huge at this point in their career is beyond me. While there is absolutely nothing wrong with their first few albums, this music is so basic, even for the standards at the time.
It was fine.
First of all, big fan of this album cover. It looks like they kinda forgot about Ringo and had to quickly add him in after the fact. As far as the music goes, I know this was historically significant in the rise of the Beatles, but it's so bland. It sounds like they're playing at a prom in the 50s. It's very early-Beatles, and it's fine I guess. It's not necessarily one I would listen to straight through again.
Several fine tracks, however this is one of my least favorite album by the Beatles.
I think it’s ok to admit that early Beatles were just ‘ok’. I understand that they were starting to do things that other bands weren’t, but while there are some classics here (I Wanna Be Your Man, Hold Me Tight, All My Lovin’) we also have half an album of fairly ordinary rock’n’roll covers that don’t really add much to the story. Maybe it’s because we know how spectacular the story becomes in its later chapters, but I can only call it like it hear it.
It’s ok, too old but I recognized some songs
Not bad. 3/5
6/10 I don't see these boys doing anything spectacular with their future. 10-21-2024
It's The Beatles. What else can I say?
I'm feeling that you had to be there. The rhythms are fun and the whole tone is very... slick, it hangs greatly together, but I'm already forgetting the whole of it.
- Favs while listening: All my Loving, Till there was you - All My Loving has some great chord work from Lennon and Harrison and some heartfelt vocals from McCartney during the chorus -Till There Was You is an acoustic ballad with some nice guitar work as well as an amazing vocal performance from McCartney who really shines on there - that album isn't progressive but it's another step towards what the Beatles would become - while this album isn’t really my favorite of the Beatles, it still has some good ones on there but I wouldn’t listen to it as a whole again OVERALL: 3/5
This album was voted in a list of top 200 ever made... Who writes these lists? It's not bad, it's not great either, it's alright background music, like a pub cover band. A few of these songs are covers as well, all the 5 star reviews are overhyped. I do enjoy Ringo drums though, always against what you would naturally have thought. It's a middling album, straight down the middle score for me.
A Beatles fan since I was a child I used to listen to this album on an old Grundig reel to reel tape player. By no means my favourite Beatles album but some great songs my favourites being It Wont be Long and All my Loving. I think this album is best remembered for its covers rather than original Beatles songs
I enjoyed that all the songs were like 2 minutes
There's a number of lovely ditties on this, but WOW did drugs do a lot for this band's writing, music, and hair. Thank gawd!
Highlights: It Won't Be Long All My Loving Money (That's What I Want) A historically important Beatles album I guess, but not much worth revisiting.
Some enjoyable bit of pre too many drugs beatles
The Beatles being the beatles
Good.
Bit bland
Lots of covers. I like their later stuff better.
Fun to hear the young Beatles. Some covers and some early signs of their song writing quality. I thought Till There Was You was an original (it's actually by Meredith Wilson). Just a bit too 50s for me.
Mid tbh. Some songs I really like, such as "All My Loving" and "Till There Was You" I could listen to it while I'm cleaning or something. Nothing particularly inspiration or riveting though
I can never tell if I enjoy The Beatles. It’s familiar in spite of the fact that I’ve never intentionally listened to any of it. How do I know so many of the lyrics? I do like the cover artwork of the Australian release. The font is delightful. Neutral rating.
It's fine. I was expecting a masterpiece, but I was let down a little. It's definitely not bad, but just fine.
Baby's first pop album. How very innocent. I can most clearly hear what's to come in McCartney's bass.
Early gems for any classic Beatles fan! Mostly covers but the seeds are sown here.
It’s easy to take the Beatles’ breadth of output for granted, but With the Beatles takes us back to where the formula first gelled. There’s a lot of saccharine pop here, some of it (like All I’ve Got to Do) is nearly indistinguishable from future British Invasion bands, which could adult be mistaken for a Gerry and the Pacemakers track. And, of course, this only underscores Lennon and McCartneys influence over their generation. It is difficult to judge this album and not score it against the totally of the Beatles’ output. On its own, it demonstrates outstanding and ahead of its time pop songwriting skills, despite certain throwaway tracks (the cover of You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me is both forgettable and regrettable). But it’s otherwise a far cry from there the band’s talents and creativity would ultimately take it. As with the earliest records of so many legendary artists (the Stones, Bowie, Pink Floyd) it serves as a more insightful reference point than it does as a singular output. 3/5 stars
There is a noticeable lack of harmonica on this album. Some classic tunes here but overall it doesn’t do a whole lot for me. Favorite track: I Wanna Be Your Man
I did not hate this.
Didn’t like it as much as the white album but still had a good chunk of enjoyable songs some songs just felt too slow and almost whiny
Undeniable craft, but lacking the oomf of other Beatles records.
6/10
Some memorable songs, were as others are just rock n roll covers, such as Roll over Beethoven and Money. You start hearing their trademark sound, but they have a while to go before they really develop their songwriting skills 3/5
Remastered album from 2009 not sounding the best on headphones! Early stereo is not great Don't Bother Me - country-ish of the almost sinister sort. Excitement more intoxicating than the songwriting. More bossa nova rhythms than expected... Overall: simply ok.
7,5/10 Highlights: All I've Got To Do Don't Bother Me Till There Was You
6,5/10 Highlights It Won't Be Long Please Mister Postman
Favourites: It Won’t Be Long All My Loving Please Mister Postman Money(That’s What I Want) gud beadles
Perfectly listenable, perfectly boring
I mean it’s not peak Beatles
Too cheerful for a Monday morning. I still love John Lennon's voice though.
I definitely prefer late Beatles over early Beatles...
Hier fehlt mir einfach noch das Originelle, das Neue der späteren Alben.
It's hard tp listen to a Beatles album and not compare it to other Beatles albums. This album is low on the Beatles list. Too many covers (that was a big thing bands did back then, I get it) but if giving it a rating I'm just going to say it's meh. 2.5 I guess. Although I'm not thrilled. I'll round up because it's still the Beatles
Praticamente um álbum formado de Side-B dos Beatles, legal, mas nada muito marcante.
An easy listen, we had the US versions Meet The Beatles and Beatle’s 2nd Album at 4Ex so knew all the songs. The cover also became a classic over time. A fun 35 minute experience that brought back memories of the 60s. Still good, but not great (3.4*s)
Hard to beat the classics. The Beatles are in the pantheon of great and influential artists for so many reasons. While I've been exposed to The Beatles for 30+ years I haven't run through many of their early albums. I was familiar with about half of these songs through various radio segments and their existence in the cultural zeitgeist. The tracks I didn't know had more of the same catchy simplicity that the early Beatles mastered and managed to successfully crank out to take the world by storm. With The Beatles is expectedly bubble-gum pop but its crazy that their catalog from the early 60's still sounds so good and enjoyable. I'd probably rank With The Beatles on the lower side of their discography but that isn't to be a knock, merely to recognize how strong their albums were through their insane 10 year run. I know there is going to be more Beatles and I'm excited for the forthcoming albums. 3.04 stars
Better. But not really for me.
Honestly solid album. 3.5 to a light 4 star.tracks for it time are pretty good.my fav tracks are till there was you,it won’t be long
