Early Beatles eru svo skemmtilegir, hægt að hlusta endalaust án þess að fá leið. Tvær plötur á fyrsta ári + sínglar er vissulega soldið metnaðarfullt og væri ekki gert í dag. Fyllt upp í með coverlögum en það voru allir að gera coverlög í sixtísinu. Allt líka frábærar útgáfur af annarra lögum. Gaman að hlusta á fyrsta lag Harrison. Söngurinn og harmónian í aðalhlutverki á plötunni, en alveg farið að glitta í það sem koma skyldi.

Cooler Klassiker
Sort of expected sgt. peppers, the white album, or maybe rubber soul guess this one is definitive early beatles. It'd be great to know why this album was chosen, suppose you have to read the book for that.
While I love The Beatles this is one of the places where I recognize that they maybe didn't need to have 7 albums on the list. It is a great album and is still going to get a high rating regardless. "All My Loving" is a top 5 Beatles song for me and I am always happy to listen to it. Great listen any day!
It's clear that The Beatles had mastered the sound of 50's Rock n Roll before they began to change it so much, like Picasso mastering the classics styles before painting all that weird shit.
An oldie but a goodie, "With The Beatles" is a great early album. While all of the tracks are lacking compared to more recent music, the Beatles really had a strong, positive influence on the direction of music and rock specifically. Throughout this album, there are numerous sounds, riffs & motifs which are timeless. Even their simple, upbeat, chord progressions and four piece instrumentation has transcended decades. The Beatles were all very talented musicians who did wonders for the advancement of music.
Objectively this album is at most a 3, but gosh darn it if I didn’t have a huge smile on my face the whole time.
Liked this jawn. Fucked w It wont be long
Good job you boys
Never listened to this one before or gave the bubblegum pop Beatles much of a chance. I actually really enjoyed it! Lyrics are pretty dumb but nice harmonies and toe tapping tunes
I like it. But why do they have bowl cuts? It’s kinda barbershop quartet-y
It had been a while since I’d heard this album. It’s interesting to hear the Beatles’ take on the genres and artists that influenced them. It’s too bad that as often the case, the original black artists tended to receive less acclaim despite being the original - and superior - version.
Favourite songs: It Won’t Be Long, All My Loving, Till There Was You, Please Mister Postman, You Really Got a Hold on Me 7.5 - 8 / 10
4-
it's the Beatles
Good enough Rock'n Roll Nothing exceltional but still entertaining.
My friends always talk about how trash the Beatles are, so I always go into their albums ready to join them, but I always come out still loving them. Yes their songs are simple and a little dated, but they’re still so catchy and well made. I don’t think this is their best album but it’s still great.
Early Beatles feels like a time capsule. It is great and dated and showcases the huge potential of great musicians. But it is repackaged versions of American blues riffs and pop sensibilities from the late 1950s. . . with many covers of standards. The lyrics are all puppy love and longing and a bit boring. . . Still. It is a good album. It is just not one I would listen to on a regular rotation. You can hear the seeds of their future brilliance here.
I tend to prefer later Beatles albums to this, but there’s no denying this is chock full of great pop songs. You can understand why the world went mad for them as it was quite unlike anything else at the time.
I would consider myself to have about average knowledge of The Beatles and I was pretty unfamiliar with this album. The only one I really recognized for sure was All My Loving, which I feel is the obvious standout of the album. But I also enjoyed Don't Bother Me, which I've definitely never heard before. The rest was very easy listening for me, even if not super memorable.
Hard to beat this classic!! Until you listen to Rubber Soul…
3.5/5
Pretty good, but it’s The Beatles. Not playlist material for me.
never listened to the beatles all that much, i dont know why. a good listen. downloaded 2,4,6,7,8,10
Obviously a classic for a reason, some fun songs on here.
Listened to this while playing Imperium: Classics. I played as the Celts against the Macedonians and lost. This album, however, was a winner! I loved all the covers they did...it was fun hearing the Beatles' spin on other music. I noticed how much more complex their chord structures were compared to the covers. Almost baroque in sound at points. Thoroughly enjoyed the listening experience!
It Won't Be Long - Ooh, tap in for a good ride! 8.5/10 All I've Got To Do - This a banger by my standards. Short and sweet. 9/10 All My Loving - Feeling swingy. 7.5/10 Don't Bother Me - I can see how these dudes were popping in the 60s. 7.5/10 Little Child - 6/10 Till There Was You - 8/10 Please Mr Postman - WHAAAAAT 10:/10 Roll Over Beethoven - MMMMMM. 9/10 Hold Me Tight - 7/10 You Really Got A Hold On Me - 6.5/10 I Wanna Be Your Man - 6/10 Devil In Her Heart - 8/10 Not A Second Time - 7/10 Money - 8/10 7.7/10
Pretty damn good, 7/10
I can see why the Beatles were so popular; even though I didn't love the style I enjoyed these songs quite a bit.
Some nice bangers and melodies, sometimes repetative. Creates a longing feeling
I’ve always liked this album, it was one of the first Beatles albums I really heard. Definitely some cheesy stuff on here but some great love songs, too.
they finally threw me a bone with The Beatles
Its a 4.5 star album its really fucking good!!! its easy listenable with many highlights but theres not like a crazy standout moment that happened for me in abbey road
Good album from early catalog of Beatles
Everything around The Beatles usually annoys me, but that’s a talk for another day. Loved the 60s vibes on this one, it’s very constant in a good way, easy and fun to listen.
Early Beatles isn’t my favourite as I find it too mainstream compared to their later work. However, they’re still the most influential band of all time and every album is significant in its own right.
I've already heard this album, but I gave it a relisten. Even being one of the weaker Beatles albums, it's still great. Very energetic!
Good one
los quiero mucho mis niños 8/10
The album was overall really good. I mean the Beatles in general are really good but I think this is my new favorite album. The songs are very catchy and I think I would definitely listen to more of The Beatles! 4.5/5
It’s The Beatles of course I like it. Though not as good as some of their others.
Some of my favorite early Beatles tracks (All My Loving, It Won't Be Long) on this album, but overall one of the more forgettable Beatles records. It's not bad, it's fun, but doesn't hold a candle to their early singles or later work.
Pretty rough and unblemished. Can see why older folks didn't like them. 3.9
It's certainly not an album I would choose to listen to regularly, but listening to this in the context of what else was on offer in 1963, it's easy to see why they had such an impact at the time. It’s interesting to hear all the influences from the past such as from Little Richard but also glimpses of what was to come. They hadn’t yet broken free of the pre 1964 concept of what a band was, but they are starting to become something entirely different. 3.5+/5
I’m a Beatles lover. I don’t dislike any of their records and I really love the pre-Hard Day’s Night stuff and how fun it is. There are better British Invasion records or Merseybeat or whatever, but this is just a joyous 30 minutes.
Not my favorite Beatles album, but they’re still amazing and “It Won’t Be Long” is such an ear worm.
Not just a corny, quick cash grab follow up, this is a remarkable step up from their first album and proved that these boys had some serious talent.
4.5
Before Harry Styles, before Bieber, before Timberlake, there were the Beatles... My right ear really enjoyed the singing and my left ear really enjoyed the guitar. My left ear gives it a 3.5/5 and my right ear gives it a 4/5. With some of these electric guitar riffs they were basically shredding metal in the early 60's. I wouldn't let these hooligans in my good Christian town. This album was filled with a lot of good sentiments. Sometimes I wanted to dance, sometimes I wanted to sing along, sometimes I wanted to wander through a field in the springtime and smell the wonderful roses. The combination of clean tremolo guitar and smooth, energetic vocals is always pleasing. Nice and clean. And then drugs happened and things really changed after this. As they would have undoubtedly said in 1963: This shit slaps.
Clear rockabilly influence, western twang and doo-wop acapella. Jazz elements. Groovy.
Uhhh I prefer their earlier stuff
Overall, a fairly consistent album, enjoyed most of the songs but definitely not a stand out album for me personally.
"With the Beatles" is a solid sophomore effort from the Fab Four. Released in 1963, it continues to showcase the Beatles' budding songwriting skills and harmonious charm. Tracks like "All My Loving" and "It Won't Be Long" reflect their early brilliance. The album's production maintains the simplicity of their debut while hinting at the evolution to come. However, compared to their later groundbreaking work, "With the Beatles" can feel a bit formulaic. Some tracks lack the innovation and experimentation that would define their later albums. It's a decent album in its own right but doesn't quite reach the iconic status of their later releases, making it more of a stepping stone in their remarkable career.
There is something simple and sweet about the first couple of Beatles albums, including this second one. A mix of covers and original material, it serves more as a document of the band's musical roots and influences with a glimpse of the Lennon and McCartney songwriting partnership that would forever change popular music. Listening to "With The Beatles" now feels a bit like a museum experience, given the impact The Beatles would go on to have. Plus, it is a definite chronicle of the era's Merseybeat sound which would invade the rest of the world. Listening to the whole album reveals the quartet earning their musical chops, finding their way, and honing their craft. It is nowhere near their best LP. It might not even suggest the band would become one of the greatest ever, but it definitely set them on a path that solidified their status as hitmakers once they matured as musicians and people. They were all still in their early 20s, after all.
can't go wrong
Ah, the simple charm of early Beatles.
4.5 stars. It's the Beatles. Shorter album (33 min) but hard to dislike anything about it, even if it isn't packed with tracks I love. "Roll Over Beethoven" sounds very Beach Boys. Standout is "All My Loving".
Very cool and good.
Just great, as Beatles always are.
Beatles album cannot be less than 4 stars, but this album is far from their greatests works
These songs are all nice and poppy. All nice and short. Basic enough with some basic songwriting (see ‘Please Mister Postman’). This is the kind of album I would put on again without particularly liking any of the songs by themselves. 7/10.
Are all the beatles albums on this list? Like, if you had to choose 3 beatles albums would this be one of them? I'm not sure, but I dont think that it would. Its a good album, maybe even a great album, but the beatles basically defined rock and roll for a generation or more. Anyway, 4 stars. 4/5
I thought it would be better.
Far from great, but has a few decent tracks. All My Loving is amazing. But there’s a few good toe tappers.
4.1 Just a bundle of joy. I think With The Beatles is overall more consistent in terms of quality than Please Please Me, BUT Please Please Me has the better singles which is why I think this album gets overlooked. Also the cover of it is just so unsymmetrical and uneven it's so jarring to look at they wasted such good pictures (poor Astrid Kirchherr). Fave songs: Please Mister Postman, All My Loving, Boys, Hold Me Tight
A lot of covers on this album, but originals like All My Loving make this a great collection that show the Beatles coming into their own as a band.
I liked this album a lot more than most people. It’s a lot different than their later material with very simple love songs and shorter lengths, but this reminded me of country songs from the 50s and 60s which I’ve listened to a lot and enjoy. It also contains some classics such as It Won’t Be Long and All My Loving, and I enjoyed Please Mister Postman. The only thing is a few songs don’t have the same immediacy and are very forgettable.
Good.
Sometimes I forget about the Beatles roots as a first of its kind pop-rock band that sang great love songs. I hadn't heard most of these before, or at least not in a long time. Overall good album but Little Child has...not aged well
Pretty good album. Never actually listened to the Beatles, other then hearing their really big hits here and there, but i did enjoy my time with this one. I do have to say some of the songs sound very repetitive and boring, to me personally. Some of my favorite tracks were: Till There Was You, Please Mister Postman, Roll Over Beethoven and Devil In Her Heart.
Really great album though you can definitely tell that it's still very much early Beatles. Some songs stuck out while others are covers which you have to take points away, of course. Still better than a lot of the crap and imitations that were to follow. If there is one thing the Beatles offer across every album it's that their music/albums are always easy to listen to. 7/10.
Best listened to in mono - stereo mixing was very basic in 1963. A few great tracks (particularly All My Loving), and the cover versions are fun, but rarely match the originals. More time was spent on recording this than their debut, and a few innovations in guitar sound are noticeable.
I love The Beatles and their exceptional output. And this is another great one. Just catchy, beautiful, fun songs! 8,5 out of 10
Yea issa banger
Holy stereo, Batman. If I ever look for this on vinyl I'll be sure to get the mono version. This seemed hastily mixed that way, with the vocals all the way to the right and instruments all the way to the left. However I could eventually all but forget about it because at the end of the day it was still a Beatles album, and a good one for sure, but I don't think it's the best. A pleasant listen regardless. Favourite: All My Loving
I am a huge Beatles fan and I have listened to all of their albums. Definitely understand the British Invasion and the sweep through the US. It's also cool to see how they progressed from here to their later albums. The evolution is neat.
Really good, made me change my opinion on the Beatles. However, they didn’t have many songs that stuck with me. Maybe on a 2nd listen they would.
A really great album. I can't even imagine how this would have sounded at the time, every song is a classic and it all sounds amazing. I personally prefer the sound of later Beatles stuff, but I haven't listened to this album in a long time and it feels just fun. Definitely worth checking out.
Another one that’s pretty hard to listen to objectively. It’s the Beatles. I’ve been listening to this for my whole life. It’s not my favorite Beatles, but it’s great.
Classic 4.5
Early beatles, with lots of covers. It's still very mucha breakthrough album, you can kind of tell that they're still working out albums. Very poppy, with lots of covers. There's maybe only one essential beatles song (all my loving), but the rest are definitely worth listening to, especially because it's so short. Not their best album by a long way, but still good.
I don't love the Beatles but this is good
It's not the Beatles at their best, it's them becoming the Beatles
It’s the Beatles
Not top tier Beatles by a stretch, but it's got quite a few bangers and doesn't overstay its welcome. Pretty solid.
The Beatles were a stepped change to the music scene, hard to believe this album is 60 years old. They had a good sound, a very simple 3 minute track recipe.that simply just works.
A surprising number of covers, including a song from "The Music Man." Definitely an album aimed at teenage girls. There are some songs where you can hear them wanting to be a rhythm and blues band. Not a bad song on the album, several are good to very good, and one stone cold killer pop song ("All My Loving"). If I could give 1/2 stars it would be 4 1/2.
Another album where the b sides take away from it. Hard to grade this since half the songs are covers and I feel like out of the originals and covers, it was 50/50 in terms of what I enjoyed. Would this be on the list if the artist had a different name? Hard to say. Ultimately though a worthwhile and mostly enjoyable listen.
This album shows us where the Beatles come from (musically speaking). The covers on here are some of their best, ranging from Broadway to Motown (my faves are You Really Got A Hold On Me and Money) and the originals show the promise of what they would do only 2 years later on Rubber Soul. My fave originals here are All my loving (what an incredible melody) and I Wanna Be Your Man, which still rocks in 2023. A 4 feels appropriate as a tier separator between this album and other Beatles albums on this list.
Beyond review really. Here they are, young and free and cheeky. Except, not. But, also yes. The Beatles are more than musicians. They are a phenomenon. Still are really. But it’s about the music, man. And why it is is pretty good. The covers are great. My favourite cover of theirs is Boys, but please Mr postman and money on this album are particularly close to it. (Yes I know, twist and shout, it’s great too). Poor George had to face the ignominy of developing his songwriting in public - his song is, well, a song. And doesn’t really point to the superb efforts he’d later produce. But John and Paul did their dross in Paul’s bedroom in Liverpool. The album cover suggests the depths they'd plumb, which at this stage, they had no idea of. That it’s only 2 years to rubber soul and is incredible growth. Brian Wilson and Dylan are the only ones who develop that quickly. Also, they are presenting as ‘serious artists’ in that picture, probably cynically at this point. Yet, fate has a way of mocking you, innit? An important waypoint in the history of rock and a great listen, this is a five star album from any band but from the fabs it’s a 3.5. Rounded up to four.
Solid album for the first half of Beatles catalog. Not a fan of most of the covers but still deserves to be listened to often. 8.5/10 on The Beatles scale
Always forget how many great songs are in this album. A couple cheesy ones (Little Child, Devil in her heart) but what do you expect, it’s 1963. Don’t Bother Me is an underrated George track.
Always had a soft spot for this album, it's a definite step up from Please Please Me. All My Loving is amazing, what a tune. I'm a fan of most of the original compositions, Little Child and Don't Bother Me being the exceptions. They shouldn't let this George guy write anymore songs. The covers are pretty great; Till There Was You, Please Mr Postman, Money, You Really Got A Hold On Me being my favourites. I feel some big things are coming with this group
This is a great album. Not by the standards of the Beatles though. If you had asked me which Beatles albums would be on this list, this would not have been one of them. Their second LP, With the Beatles expands on their first album by providing a marked step up in the maturity of the songwriting while still maintaining the covers and simplistic structuring of Please Please Me. In many ways it can be seen as somewhat of an older brother to Please Please Me. The originals on this album come in a big range of quality. At the top of the list has to be All My Loving, which combines hard hitting triplet chords with a walking bass line and McCartney's excellent vocal to create an excellent 60s pop song whose sound is so unique you really can't do anything like it without being super obviously mimicking it. It Won't Be Long, All I've Got To Do, and Not A Second Time are nice Lennon tracks that are interestingly written and display the creative exploration going on, but aren't going to blow anyone's socks off. Hold Me Tight was originally written for the first album but cut. It's not one of my favourites but I will say the guitar and bass parts are deceptively tricky with some interesting chord changes. Don't Bother Me isn't too interesting but is notable as Harrison's first contribution, the budding of a great songwriter. Little Child is one of my least favourite Beatles songs, I find it to be bland and unappealing. I Wanna Be Your Man is a goofy little throwaway song, but my favourite thing about it is that the Beatles decided to give it to the Rolling Stones who then had a hit with it. The Beatles then decided to record their own version and it's just a million times better than the Stones' one. Looking away from the original compositions, we have a very interesting selection of covers that really displays the broad range of music the Beatles listened to. They famously listened to everything they could get their hands on and had an extraordinarily wide view of popular music, which I believe was a major factor in their ability to synthesize so many disparate sounds into the canon of songs they're so famous for. Till There Was You provides a brand new soft side to the Beatles, and is an excellent track with fantastic singing and great lead classical guitar. That solo is just awesome. You Really Got a Hold On Me and Devil in Her Heart are darkly interesting songs that I think suit the Beatles well. Money is just a classic and in a similar vein to Twist and Shout the Beatles really made it their own. Money showcases two of the best rock voices of the early sixties: John Lennon ripping his lead vocal and Paul McCartney at the top end of the backing vocals, awesome stuff. Roll Over Beethoven is a fun time and showcase of Harrison's awkward early guitar solo style. Please Mr Postman I find pretty boring and the weakest of the covers. Overall this album shows us a band who already has found their sound but is eager to continue to expand both through covering tracks and writing originals. The creeping maturity seen here only barely hints at the greatness to come. If The Beatles fell off the map after this we would probably say they were just another promising pop band, if remarkably talented, that couldn't sustain their popularity. But history shows us that this album is just one stepping stone as they made their way inexorably from a peppy upstart group of goofballs into the innovational force they later became. PS whoever decided to hard pan drums and bass on some tracks in the 2009 remaster can suck a fat one.
Only love for the beatles, this is still in their era of doing more covers than originals but I loved their more poppy spins on the classics
I love the Beatles, even the early songs but some of the fillers on this are average for the time. Basic boy band harmonies and covers. All my Loving and the cover of Money redeem it though. Interesting how they progressed from here......
You can still taste the enthusiasm.
It's difficult to listen to With The Beatles through fresh ears. It's all so familiar, it's all so predictable. But imagine listening to this for the first time in 1963. It's a great little rock 'n' roll album. The originals are actually stronger than the covers. Thirty three minutes is also the perfect running time for any album.
Yeah this isn't one the Beatles better works, but it's still The Beatles so it's still very listenable.
Nice
Really like this early Beatles sound. Not the best Beatles album, but still great!
Brilliant album with great pop songs
Could listen to any beatles album any time of any day, this is not the best one: 4.5
Early Beatles, still relatively simple pop songs but allready great in execution.
Who the devil is this? These guys look like they have a bright future! Can't wait to hear more from them! Still finding their footing but this is a solid collection of songs, original and covers
7/10. Pretty good. Nice to listen to the album with "Money" on it right after we have the Mothers of Invention album accusing the Beatles of only being in it for the money.
The Beatles before they worked out what they really wanted to do. 8/10
Vaya, otro disco de The Beatles.
Highly enjoyable. I understand why they made such an impact.
upbeat album with infectious rhythms and their signature harmonies. a few highlights: “all my loving”, “roll over beethoven”, and “you really got a hold on me”. very catchy album and enjoyable to listen to.
A fun record full of early Beatles goodness. A couple of good covers, a few big career hits and just a good vibing record.
As with all Beatles albums it's a lively jaunt and I'm there for it. A good mix of originals and other Motown covers that they put their spin on to varying degrees of success. Not their best album but even their middling albums have more energy than other bands most well known. Very listenable on repeat visits.
This is where I came to The Beatles as my mum had an original vinyl copy. I played it over and over. Yes it's raw, and they were only starting out as songwriters but it's still got it. The harmonies, the playing. It's not a perfect album but it's a good reminder of how they developed.
Good
Canciones favoritas: You really got a hold on me, Not a second time, it won't be long.
Evidently, the stereo version was secondary, and George Martin mixed the whole thing to stereo in under three hours. The albums about 30 minutes, so I'm not sure where he spent the other 2.5 hours after just splitting the vocals and lead instruments and going out for a smoke. The only good mix is for "Money (That's What I Want)," and that was evidently done the next day (after a good break). The mix is so bad, but it's at least a mix of The Beatles, so it's technically still winning.
well... it's beatles
It’s fun to get this Beatles album almost right after abbey road and see the contrast. Abbey road is ahead of its time and ultra original while this is a solid mix of covers and original songs; both are good in their own right but abbey road is still better and Smokey Robinson really got a hold is much better than this. Overall though this is a really high 4 because all the covers just assisted in white people stealing black music as was normal in the era.
Lovely
A few years ago I used to think that the Beatles were over rated. Since starting my review project and having two previous Beatles albums and a George Harrison album, I’ve come to see just how wrong I was. I’m excited to listen to this one today. Songs I already knew: Please Mister Postman Favourites: Please Mister Postman, All My Live Firstly, to clarify, my familiarity of Please Mister Postman comes from the version by The Marvelettes. I never knew there was a version by The Beatles, but it’s pretty great! When listening to this album, I felt it started very strongly, but I felt my attention starting to waver by the last couple of songs. I imagine that if I had this on vinyl, side a would get a lot more play time than side b. Still a very good album, but my least favourite when compared to A Hard Day’s Night and Sgt. Pepper.
Classic Beatles! one from their early years. Great songs full of idealistic love and fun.
Fantastic for what it is. Not on the level of, say, Revolver or Rubber Soul, but a great stepping stone for what was to come. All the songs are very catchy, but the instrumentation is noticeably old when compared to future works. It also contains one of my favorite Beatles songs ("Please Mister Postman") and I find it a bit bittersweet to listen to considering "All My Loving" was reportedly the last song John Lennon ever heard before his death.
Don't Bother Me - Excellent song Hold Me Tight - Beach Boys Vibe 6/10. Inoffensive. Typical Beatles. Short, with short songs.
Melodic. But then it is The Beatles! :)
This is just a fun listen. And there’s nothing wrong with a perfectly executed rock and roll record. Even if it’s half cover songs, everything has such distinctive Beatles sound to it that it feels all original.
This is early Beatles, which has never been my favorite era of one of my favorite bands. They weren't yet breaking down walls, or writing all of their own songs. But there was a lot of potential clearly visible here as well. Some fab originals, like "All My Loving" and "It Won't Be Long", are previews of the powerhouse that is Lennon-McCartney. And even George gets his first songwriting credit on "Don't Bother Me". Their harmonies shine on all these tracks, and their playing is tight. Not among their best, but a very enjoyable sign of things to come.
Lot of covers. Pretty good though.
Early Beatles. Tons of vocal harmony, lightly distorted guitar, good fun
L'album contient des hits tels que "All My Loving" et "It Won't Be Long". »
Not too bad, stands a few listens but not quite a 5 Has some great, well known tracks
Well done, but a lot of these are covers and the relationship themes get a bit repetitive. 3.5 stars.
love the early Beatles albums. Before all the fame and experimentation. Still has the doo-wop influence of 50s pop heavily throughout
Fuck stereo but these songs are bops
Amazing how many hits they can pack onto each and every record. I especially like the originals but the covers have that unique Beatles spin.
One thing I always appreciate about The Beatles is how succinct each song is and how clear it is when a new song starts. 4.5
i’ve never been the biggest beatles fan and this didn’t make me into one, but i was pleasantly surprised. not some of their best but some good songs on here
Another quality Beatles record. It feels more like a collection of random songs compared to their later stuff, as well as being much less experimental and just straight up pop/rock. Most of the songs I really enjoyed. 7/10
The thing that struck me about this album is just how many songs have been covered by other artists. It set the tone for the rest of the genre and changed music history forever. Whilst it's not something I would actively choose to listen to, because I feel the industry has moved on, I do feel that it has its place in the legends book, and therefore deserves a high rating.
It’s definitely the Beatles
It’s The Beatles. Not their best, but this is still better than most.
For me, this one always gets overshadowed by Rubber Soul and everything that came after. Obviously not the best of their discography, but certainly a very solid early 60s pop album and a glimpse into their early sound.
"With the Beatles" is the second studio album from The Beatles and was released eight months after their debut "Please Please Me." The Beatles were on a plan to record two studio albums and four singles per year. "With the Beatles" did not have a single and included eight originals and six covers. In the US, the first two UK album releases were split differently into two US album releases, "Meet the Beatles" and "The Beatles Second Album." The iconic album cover was taken by Robert Freedman at the Palace Court Hotel as they tried to emulate their early 60's photos in Hamburg. Obviously, it influenced several if not more future album covers. An original, "It Won't Be Long," begins things with John Lennon on vocals. Authoritative "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah" backing vocals. I always liked The electric guitar on this song. "All My Loving" may be Paul McCartney's best early Beatles' song. Clear, confident vocals by McCartney. And we have George Harrison's first solo composition in "Don't Bother Me." This is a decent song. The classic Chuck Berry cover "Roll Over Beethoven" starts Side Two. George Harrison on vocals. Another strong McCartney song is "Hold Me Tight." A simple pop song. Nice harmonies and backing vocals. Well, it's The Beatles. Probably the cover highlight is the closer "Money (That's What I Want.)" A screaming John Lennon in early Beatles' album is a good thing. He doesn't quite match the incendiary "Twist and Shout" performance but do you think of anyone besides The Beatles singing it? What can you say about a classic early Beatles' album? I did listen to their debut "Please Please Me" right after and, honestly, I give a slight edge to the debut. However, this album is essential, historic and a joy to listen to.
4/5
A mediocre Beatles album is still a pretty good album.
It was fine. Inoffensive. A couple of nice songs
Very mellow lovely to listen to not my style but definitely loved it
Some great stuff but not at their best yet
actually kind of solid. didn't like it at first but some real gems in the second half, opener
A great collection of covers and originals. This music may sound super tame today, but I can imagine how square society reacted to the pounding beats and primal shrieks as John Lennon belts out the new gospel of materialism on "Money"
second album 1963. I enjoyed this quite a lot. though, my favorites were covers :) You Really Got A Hold On Me Money (That's What I Want)
Teeny bop heaven
Ikkje da aller beste, men fortsatt bra
Given what they went on to achieve, it's easy to forget that the Beatles basically started off as a glorified cover band. Nearly half of this album is comprised of covers, and I'm totally fine with that for two reasons: 1). Their talent shines through regardless of whose songs they're singing. 2). They've got great taste in music. I'm especially fond of their versions of "Please Mr. Postman" and "Roll Over Beethoven," but let's not forget their original stuff. "All My Loving" is the stands above the rest, but there's not a bad song in the bunch. This album's one you can simply throw on and listen to from start to finish without worrying about throwaway tracks.
Middle-Beatles is always my favorite Beatles, but I think I prefer early-Beatles to late-Beatles. Lots of fun stuff here, both original and covers. I'll give it 4.5 and if "I Want to Hold Your Hand" had made it onto the album, would bump it to 5.
I've listened to this album a lot. I really like it, super catchy and well recorded. It's just fun.
not there best but very good
This is a pretty good album. I feel like this album is a good example of toe-tapping. It's not super energetic, but gets you into a little groove while enjoying the music. I still hate having the audio split between left and right ears though, please let me enjoy the music with just one earbud in. Favorite song: Please Mister Postman Worst song: Roll Over Beethoven
Pop pop pop! Not deep or clever, but lots of fun to sing along to.
I’ve only ever heard ‘All My Loving’ and ‘Please Mister Postman’ before, but there’s actually quite a few good songs. It’s Beatles after all Saved songs: It Won’t Be Long, Don’t Bother Me, Hold Me Tight
Even though The Beatles are probably my favorite band, I've never actually listened to this all the way though. Good album boys!
Good not their best. Always listenable
Love these. So underground and local
Great. Of course.
Never gets old. OK - the covers are actually a little tiresome.
classic....
7/10 seems nicer than most Beatles albums
Good one, 3-4
It's the Beatles I guess idk. 4 stars.
Some of my favourites: All My Loving, It Won’t Be Long, Not a Second Time, You Really Got a Hold on Me Also featuring some of the most trite songs on any Beatles album: Hold Me Tight, Little Child, I Wanna Be Your Man I give this Beatles album the lowest possible score, 4 stars Oct 2, 2022
The most notable thing about With the Beatles is probably its iconic cover, but there are plenty of aural delights within. John and Paul continue to polish their impeccable songwriting chops, George contributes his first number (even if he later admitted he didn’t care for it), and even Ringo gets to experiment with various percussive instruments.
Not my favorite Beatles album but still good
All the songs were short, sweet and inoffensive. Def. Not the best Beatles but it was good.
Very cheery, perfect for a chill morning
Dikke CD! Lekker dansen old school style.
Not my favourite Beatles album but still quality obviously.
Like many, I tend to dismiss the early Beatles catalog as a product of its time, but whenever I spin an early album up, it surprises me with its depth. Another unexpected observation: George Harrison wasn't given enough chances to write songs for this band. Best track: Don't Bother Me
yasss this is so slay. i like that it feels very cohesive but there's still plenty of variation between songs idfk lmao. def as good as the rest of their early stuff. #imwiththebeatels
Not quite as good as their first album, and I prefer their later work, but still a great time.
Beatles don't disappoint
Love me some early doo-wop Beatles. Highlights: It Won’t Be Long, Don’t Bother Me, All My Loving, You Really Got A Hold
Not my favorite of theirs, but it's great!
This was the one Beatles album I picked up on CD during the 2009 remaster reissues because I didn't have it in any other format already. It made me appreciate the earlier Beatles much more. Some real nice songwriting and choice covers. Such great energy.
Not the best of the Beatles work, obviously. But a strong start for their sound. Glad to listen to it in full, I only knew a couple of the songs.
Never listened to much of the early beatles content on original albums...bit of near perfect pop that only slightly hints at where they would end up...enjoyed though
7/14, 50%
It was something different from the beatles, a good album
Where it all starts to come together. As with all their albums, ridiculous that they just knocked it off so effortlessly. The worst tracks are the covers and there's too many of them. And the covers are really good songs within themselves Not as good as A Hard Day's Night, probably better than Sergeant Pepper's. Which makes it in the bottom half of Beatles albums and yet it's still essential Plus it has a great cover.
Stupidly good.
Old school, pop rock beetles. Good stuff
Svo einfalt en svo gott. Einhverjir textar hafa ekki staðist tímans tönn, en það er svo sem skiljanlegt á næstum 60 árum.
One of my favorites of the bunch.
Not the best Beatles album, but certainly a good album
Not quite perfection from the Beatles, but still pretty dang close. Possibly their weakest album but still a 4/5.
Early Beatles album, not as yet great
4.25
I am a much bigger fan of mid to late Beatles, but this album does have some good ones. I like this is the first time you get an inkling of what the Beatles are to become. 4/5
A strong entry from the Fab Four but not their brightest moments. This one has a couple of memorable songs but lacks a truly iconic one in the bunch.
Some solid songs and fairly enjoyable
You magnificent men you. My G.O.A.T. Tempted to go 5 stars just because it's the ol' Beatles, but really it's a four. They were just warming up here for their ridiculous 5-star albums run in the (then) near future.
When I saw this was their 2nd album I expected more of their sophomoric writing but was really surprised at how many well written songs this actually had.
The Beatles will always be a bop for me and full of nostalgia, as I grew up listening to them due to my dad's love of the Beatles. I was only familiar with about half of these -- it was an enjoyable, succinct album!
I really enjoyed this one. I'll be the first to say I think the Beatles can be overrated but this was a fun listen.
I'm not a huge fan of the Beatles "sound". That said... this album had some GOOD SONGS. All My Loving is classic, I LOVE the song "Till There Was You". Roll Over Beethoven is a good example of a toe tapping classic, but definitely dated.
An album like this one makes you realize how good the Beatles later became. This album is good but it's hard to get too excited. All My Loving might be my favourite original song on the album. I know, it's a Paul song, but I said it "might be" my favourite. Actually, John's Little Child is the best original tune. It's cool having John sing lead and background vocals and play harmonica all at the same time. How does he do it? lol The harmonica might be the highlight as it continues through the verses and chorus - all the way nonstop from beginning to end. There are many interesting covers. I never knew George sang Roll Over Beethoven. What a great cover. The cover of Money is considered a John Lennon classic due to his howling lyrics. Interestingly, this cover is done almost exactly like Barrett Strong's original. The cover of Till There Was You is the exact opposite as John's sad George's duelling classical guitars make it night and day different from the original. Nice LP. I'm rounding up.
This is a solid follow-up only 8 months after their audacious debut album. You can see that they've been working on their song writing skills even though only 8 out of the 14 songs are originals. But these originals are pretty damned good, Although Beatle-mania had started, I don't think anyone had any inkling of the mega-ton atomic explosion that was coming from their subsequent albums and how they would shape music history in a few years.
The Beatles. Nearly a decade of great songs. One of my favorite bands ever. Yet sometimes, some questions linger in my mind as I revisit their music. Have they ever made a bad song? What about a bad album? Why does a song like "Little Child" exist, in a discography of a band like The Beatles? What's is about "With the Beatles" that it felt bland at some point? Why "With the Beatles" and not the arguably better "Please Please Me"? But whatever the answer to these questions are, it's always easy to get lost along their music. And even in their early works, there's several gems to enjoy, despite their cheapness. Overall, this album is like a bubblegum. Sweet, but gets bland pretty quickly.
Dare I say typical early Beatles? Short runtime, short songs that are somewhat similar ..... But they work! It's easy listening, it's never boring or dull
Good old Beatles I guess.
Classic early Beatles (2nd album)
Never a bad album by the Beatles. This is more their pop boy band style than when they transitioned into rock legends. A good album with some decent covers. This album has a long track list but is only 36 mins. Overall this may be my least favorite Beatles album, but still great. 8.1/10
I really dig it
Déjà eu version canadienne
I grew up obsessed with The Beatles. In fact, I never really listened to any other music until I was probably 14 or 15. I was never that into their earlier music - for me it was Rubber Soul and everything that came after. I do appreciate their earlier music though, and it's nice to revisit. The raw energy and amazing harmonies are what stand out for me. Interesting that Paul only has lead vocals on three songs. Good stuff, but much better was yet to come. 4 stars.
Some good Beetles songs that don't make the top charts. Solid album
It's just such good fun! The covers are great fun, the originals are great. This is the album you'd present as evidence that Ringo being a crap drummer is an idiots opinion. The looseness he plays with is what makes this head and shoulders above most other acts in 1963. It makes the songs Rae and fun, and funkier than most acts at the time could manage.
Enjoyable, but not up to the same standards as the later albums to come from this group!
Really good, older Beatles album. I am not a fan of most of the cover songs (except for Till There was You) but overall the album is quite excellent. Standouts: All My Loving, It Won't Be Long, Till There Was You. Others: Don't Bother Me, Little Child, All I've Got to Do, Devil in Her Heart, Not a Second Time, and Hold Me Tight. Could have done without: Please Mr. Postman, Roll Over Beethoven, You Really Got A Hold On Me and Money (That's What I Want). 4.5/5
Of all The Beatles' albums, this one is my least favourite. Even just looking across their early work, "With the Beatles" doesn't have the raw, "recorded-in-12-hours" power of "Please Please Me". It doesn't have the tidal wave of all-original material like "A Hard Day's Night", and it doesn't have the developing maturity of "Beatles for Sale." But it's still four stars. That's how much of a fan-boy I am. Released just a few months after their debut as Beatlemania was rising towards fever-pitch, the Beatles were still a perfectly honed machine in live performance. That energy comes across here through the band's spirited renditions, however much the actual material might sag. The covers are best not compared to the originals and instead appreciated for what the Beatles bring to them. I still get a buzz from their harmonies in "Please Mister Postman" and "You Really Got a Hold on Me", McCartney's effortlessly earnest take on "'Till There Was You" and Lennon almost reaching a "Twist and Shout" level scream-along with "Money". The originals are probably the patchiest territory: "All I've Got to Do", "Little Child" and "Not a Second Time" rank among the most forgettable in the band's catalogue. George Harrison skulks moodily through his first self-penned song "Don't Bother Me" and forgets to add a melody. But it's all okay, because "It Won't Be Long" and "All My Loving" are utterly compelling and relentlessly exciting. Why the book didn't have the band's debut "Please Please Me" instead of this, I'll never quite understand. But it's still a hell of a good ride.
I'm surprised that it's taking us this long to get to the Beatles. But I guess that's the way the randomizer... randomizes. When I was younger, I did not care much for early Beatles. Somewhere around Revolver I was a fan. That changed later, understanding how their sound was groundbreaking. It's hard to believe how much their sound did evolve, though. But this is their starting point, really. And I've come to appreciate these songs. Still... the songs themselves are simplistic in comparison to their later work. I can't give this a 5 because of that. Still... you can't go wrong with the Beatles.
It's a very good album but I don't know if it's great. I do not dispute that the Beatles are the greatest rock band of all time, but they got even better over time. This album doesn't have the same lyrical or musical depth as later releases. A lot of bubblegum and maybe a few too many remakes. I didn't love Til There Was You and sorry George but Chuck's original guitar intro and solo on Roll Over Beethoven kick your ass. They're all good homages but none really dominate the original. Although I do love John's wailing on Money - ups Barrett Strong's vocal energy just a bit. I also enjoyed their harmonies, especially on some of the originals - Little Child was too one-sided but It Won't Be Long, All My Loving, and Hold Me Tight were great. There's nothing to dislike about this album but it is not monumental (other than their timing and popularity) like other albums.
With their second album you can already hear the Beatles developing into the great band that they'll become. The harmonies are killer even if the songs are quite simple. Apart from the harmonies Paul's bass playing on here is the highlight for me with the walking bass on "All My Loving" being a standout. Their arrangements of the six cover songs are quite good too, especially "Money." They aren't quite there yet though but you can tell it's coming.
It's funny how these days a "cover band" would be seen as less talented than a "real band." But, there was a time when covers were the standard. No one expected all singers to also be songwriters. This album is a good example of the transition.
There are three Beatles albums i would give 4 stars and this is on of them. Really just an ok album, I give it 4 stars mainly for the cover art.
Probably one of the weakest offerings by the Beatles, and yet it still showcases what an awesome musical force they were. Later albums are often the main focus of the Beatles catalogue, and yet I think there's still some really good stuff to get out of the earlier albums. The songs, while simple, are extremely tight and really catchy. The covers are also all very well arranged. George Martin's honorific of "The Fifth Beatle" is certainly well deserved. These guys knew how to do pop music. I did listen to the remastered 2009 version, so it would be interesting to compare to others. I've heard mono is the way to go, but never really tried it out. *EDIT* I tried it, mono is waaay better. This is for me a really solid 4, and only misses out on 5 because I know how much better they can get. Besides the obvious hits from this album, I also enjoyed All I've Got To Do, Till There Was You and Devil In Her Heart.
Listenable to the end. It's a solid album. What I wasn't aware of was that so many of these are covers. Did that diminish the stars of others to have the Beatles putting it forth? It's interesting to dive in on that history.
This was my first time playing this album. It's been years since I'd heard some of these songs and yet I still knew the words.
Well, that's a classic. To be fair, I absentmindedly add "Boring" between The and Beatles from this period. 14 song lyrics which could be generated by the formula "I'm so happy when I'm with you, I'm so sad when you're away, please let me worship your body and soul, please pretty please". Nonetheless, it would be thoughtless to say it's a mediocre album and had minor impact on the music history. There's a huge amount of talent involved and it's hard for me to pick the best track from "With The Beatles". A I-know-most-of-the-tracks-already-because-all-radio-stations-can't-get-enough-of-the-Beatles album. No-brainer.
Early Beatles are always fun, even if they get pretty samey and don't hit most of the high heights of their later work. A good get-up-and-boogie album.
4.5
You can see the beginnings of a Beatles sound in this album, the Lennon McCartney songwriting and harmonies and the distinctive Mersey beat. Not one of the best albums but still one that’s worthy of a listen to every once in a while, for that I’ll give it a four
4, too sappy
Early Beatles' albums have too many covers. Do they make the album better or worse? I prefer the true Beatles songs. There are some good ones. This is one of my least favorite Beatles albums. That being said it is still very good. 4/5
I've never listened to the really early Beatles apart from a few singles, so I was happy to learn that this album was very enjoyable. It's a bit cheesy, some of the lyrics are laughable when compared to their later work, but it's extremely catchy and easy to listen to (a gigantic contributing factor to their success). There's also a lot of covers on this album and they're all very nice. "Roll Over Beethoven" is probably my favorite track on the album despite not being much of a Chuck Berry fan.
I generally really like The Beatles, especially their later, experimental albums. With The Beatles being only studio album no. 2, this has nothing similar to their later work, but is dominated by their earlier Rock 'n' Roll (and at times Pop) material. The songs really are a mixed bag here. We can find strong numbers like It Won't Be Long and the early classic All My Loving. But the album also contains the very, VERY schmaltzy Till There Was You, one of quite a few cover versions that have, uncharacteristically for the band, found their way onto this collection. Much better here is their rendition of the Marvelettes' Please Mister Postman. All in all, this album contains a few bad, some mediocre, and a couple of really good songs; the latter of which were an early indication of the creative heights the Beatles would reach eventually. Still, this one is 3.5/5.
Lots of cool moments on the album foreshadowing bigger things to come. Found myself digging the guitar work multiple times.
I did enjoy this older recording when that generally is not the case with the Beatles. The older the worse for me generally but I thought they picked some very interesting covers and I liked the way they set up the album.
very cool
Easy to see why they were such a hit: a set of punchy pop tunes that wouldn't upset your mum too much. I think I prefer this to their more experimental work.
much nostalgia
There are some great songs here and of course those beautiful harmonies but overall this is the least interesting Beatles album I've heard. Too many indistinct covers. Still it's the Beatles. 4.5 🌟
Some Beatles songs I hadn't heard before, was over very quickly
It's hard to rate Beatles albums objectively. It's obviously very good but suffers from being approximately half covers (which are still good performances). A 3.5 that I'll rate a 4
So this was their 2nd album eh? What can you say about the Beatles ever that hasn't been said already? Nothing, so we'll leave it there shall we?
Please Mister Postman is the solid highlight, another great album but not quite as good as Sgt Peppers. 4/5.
What a bop! Covers very rarely live up to the originals, and this is no exception, though they sure do come close. Definitely a strong 4/5.
Pretty much standard Beatles/early 60s sound
It was catchy I'll admit
4/5 yes please!
It's so strange to hear so many covers on a Beatles album. That said, even the covers are exceptionally well done. It is The Beatles, after all. They almost lost a star for covering "Please Mr. Postman" which just doesn't work from a boy band but they gained it back with a great cover of "Money" which was an unexpected joy. The main reason this album gets a four-star review instead of a five-star review is because the listening experience is dominated by the songs that The Beatles covered rather than by the songs they wrote. And, from writing monsters like this - even this early in their career - that's a shame.
leuk album, maar niet memorabel
8/10
Feel good album.
It’s hard, even for me, to realise the importance of the Beatles at the time. They were my favourite group from age 5 to about 17. This isn’t their best music but without this they wouldn’t have done what they did. It has to be 4*
Good represenatation of them
the beatles are magic
Early Beatles isn't the best, but it's still amazing.
Not quite firing on all cylinders yet, a little heavy covers. Not a 5, but I still jam along through this one.
3.75
Absolutely classic Beatles. There's not a bad track on this.
Definitely a low tier Beatles' album but still solid. 7/10
Pioneers
More of the pre-drug Beatles, but I liked it. Upbeat.
Good music
Not my fav by the lads but a solid effort
Thank you the Beatles. Bit more like the old fashioned rock and rollers
Pleasant but samey
It started out really strong, I feel like it faded, but it was still pretty good.
Pretty good preeeetty good
Was not as bad as expected. Really listenable. Felt very nostalgic. A couple songs I wasn't so keen on. Wouldn't listen again particularly but can see myself dancing to these with family
The Beatles couldn't make a bad album if they tried. There are always at least a few perfect pop songs in every album (excluding Yellow Submarine). In their American debut, this is no exception. You can easily see why they would be a sensation, with back-to-back pop masterpieces, for teens to bop to, for other artists to replicate. Songwriting is among the best of the era, exciting and full of easy-to-follow stories with many ways for the audience to participate in singing along. From the very start, you get a fistful of energy in "It Won't Be Long" that's really hard not to sing too. If you're in public, you might just get away with mumbling some "yeahs." Second track shows a calmer side to Lennon. The third track is my favorite track, introducing McCartney's soulful voice as if reaching into the soul, already showing the dynamic contrast between the two main vocalists. The covers are actually really great here. They're very popular soul and classic rock n roll songs that work incredibly well with their style. They truly make songs like "Please Mister Postman" and "You Really Got a Hold On Me" their own. "Roll over Beethoven" is a great adaption that's true to form, and I had no idea "Money" was a cover until I searched it up. The only cover I wasn't a big fan of was "Devil in Her Heart," but it's still much much better than the original. Speaking of which, there were several songs that felt very much like filler. The momentum dies out by the time you get to the last four songs. Poor Ringo in "I Wanna Be Your Man" only gets the scraps that shouldn't belong on a studio album. Each tier is ordered approximately how much I like them: Perfect: All My Loving, Til' There Was You, It Won't Be long, All I've Got to Do, You Really Got a Hold On Me, Please Mr Postman Great: Don't Bother Me, Roll Over Beethoven, Hold Me Tight, Money That's What I Want Not very good: Not a Second Time, Little Child, Devil in Her Heart, I Wanna Be Your Man
It won't be long yeah (yeah) till the Beatles have a 5-star album.
All my loving was from this! Surprise bops also Please mister postman and roll over bethoven. Classic beatles quality.
Amazing to hear the extent to which the Beatle's sound changes in just a few years. This album is such a great pop music showpiece.
This is not the best Beatles album by a stretch and Little Child has not aged well... BUT it is the Beatles and all music can be traced back to their influence, you can't convince me otherwise! Not a second time and Please mister postman BANGERS, loved listening!
I’ve never actually listens to this one the whole way through. What can I add to what’s already been written about the Beatles? Impactwise this is obviously a 5. Personal rating id probably but it as a 4. I started this list trying to be objective but have moved to subjective for my own tastes. So 4 it is.
The Beatles are always great! Few standouts in this particular album, but even the worst of The Beatles is better than many other groups.
Classic Beatles album!
Kinda underrated band ngl. Not their best, but it’s the Beatles so… 4/5
Didn't know as many of the songs as I thought I would.
Great originals and nice covers
1963. My parents were 8 years old when this album came out. I've listened to the Beatles in "passing" over the years. I've always enjoyed them. I've watched a few of the documentaries made about them over the years. I have often wondered what John Lennon would be like today. Anyway, back to this album. All I've got to do- Feels loving, feels like being hugged in a warm sweater by someone you haven't seen in years but dearly miss. I love how you can really hear the clarity of each instrument in their songs. This album reminds me of how LOVE healthy love can be simple and pure. I love the simplicity and wholesomeness in the lyrics of a lot of these "silly little love songs". They feel sincere. I don't care if it's not. It feels that way and I enjoy letting this era transport me to simpler times. This album tastes like milkshakes and burgers post sock hop dance. I can totally understand BeatleMania. I will continue to enjoy the Beatles throughout the rest of my life. I'm sure there will be more albums of theirs throughout this project. Looking forward to it. Ya'll really got a hold on me.
What shall we say, it's The Beatles. It's really old and sounds old, yet it aged well and is still good music today. It was very noticeable how this album is from the beginning of their career, without all the experimentalism that came later on. It didn't have any of my Beatles favorites, but there weren't any bad ones on here either.
