Reviews (page 8 of 14)
Decent album, a lot of good songs. I have fond memories of listening to Revolution 9 when I was younger. 4 stars.
Two thirds awesome, one third meh, as is the way with Beatles albums. But this is one of their best.
Love it
Favorite tracks: Dear Prudence, Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness Is a Warm Gun, Blackbird, Rocky Raccoon, Yer Blues, Helter Skelter, Savoy Truffle Against all odds, an incoherent grab bag of 30 tracks ends up being a generational record. But we all knew that cause it's the fucking Beatles and they were amazing songwriters.
4/5
A legendary album, yes—but also the Beatles at their most self‑indulgent. It’s crammed with brilliant songs (“While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” “Blackbird,” “Helter Skelter”) that remind you why they’re untouchable… but it’s also packed with half-baked sketches, band-in-joke throwaways, and experiments that probably sounded more fun to make than they are to listen to. It’s a fascinating document of a band pulling in four different directions, but it’s also a prime example of why not every idea deserves a place on a double album. Trim the fluff and you’d have a tight, killer single LP. As it stands? Messy, uneven, occasionally genius, occasionally baffling—but undeniably compelling.
The White Album is a classic.
While My Guitar Gently Weeps).
Note : 4 À réécouter : Oui
31# Wow, now the band that invented music (/s) The Beatles must have a kink for playinf things just for one ear.
I stick by the assertion that the beatles are overrated but I suppose this is difficult to avoid for a group so crazy popular and era-defining! What can I say, it's a great album. Lots of hits. Way too long. Especially enjoyed Back In the USSR, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, Sexy Sadie, and Revolution. Lots of them are good.
I’m going to ignore the second disk entirely in this review because it simply wasn’t as interesting to me as disk one. Albeit rather convoluted in terms of sounds and themes, the album somehow manages to retain some sense of cohesiveness. Perhaps this is why it’s the white album as the Beatles used a blank canvas as a launching point to see where music without boundaries could take them. Dear Prudence and Julia are as tender as the Beatles ever got. They continue their playful streak in Rocky Raccoon and Ob La Di. But there are some very serious moments here as well, with Happiness Is a Warm Gun containing one of the most poignant music intro put to tape. Blackbird is a classic McCartney guitar solo piece, delicate and blissful. What can I write about While My Guitar Gently Weeps that hasn’t been already expressed? It’s a big album, and every single track feels like something different and yet familiar in disc one. I’d give disc one a 5 but there’s an entire other album that was t interesting at all to me. So a 4 it is.
So many songs I hadn’t heard before! Good to go through the entire catalogue. Blackbird is one of my faves :)
Can agree with most here that this could've been shorted into a single LP. A lot of filler that is not anything to write home about. Side A however, is some of the best Beatles stuff.
3/3/26. Not my favorite Beatles album but still great. Some all time classics for me on here including Gently Weeps, Blackbird, and Back in the USSR. Realizing that this album falls in an interesting place for the band, they took a break from psychedelia and went back to their blues roots.
three heads at work almost separately
There is nothing left to say about this album, or about the Beatles for that matter. For me personally, I admire their ambition, but my favorite songs are the first two. ("Dear Prudence is my favorite Beatles song, full stop.) That leaves a looooooong time with other stuff. There's plenty to like in there, and plenty that feels as if it was fun to make but not at all essential.
Classics and new to me stuff 4
i’m normally queen of beatles are overrated nation but i have to admit this is quite a solid album
Piggies love listening to this album with their wives.
This was a long and interesting one. There's some certainly great songs (back in the ussr, obladi oblada, black bird, helter skelter, while my guitar gently weeps, etc.) but also a ton of super forgettable 2-3 minute long songs. There's also a couple real weirdos in there (looking at you piggies) not to mention whatever the fuck that ending was of revolution 9's cacophony into the bizarrely out of place almost symphony feel of good night. Despite that, it was an overall enjoyable ride.
Llevo como 4 canciones y me esta gustando pero muy leve, o sea not a big fan for now.
It's a great album and a classic
What hits. Crazy amount of talent, but also its so many songs. And some are so silly. Which is fun. But cultivate a bit
Pretty good, the Beatles is always nice to listen to. Many popular Beatles classics on here, and I liked listening to those. My favorite was Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da. Most of the songs were good, but Revolution 9 caught me by surprise. The album had 30 songs too but it didnt feel too long. 7.5/10
A good album that's absolutely carried by the first half of side A. Revolution 9 is enjoyable in its own way but I wouldn't call it music.
didnt think itd be so weird. always another interesting sound around the corner. not a ton of skips for a double album. favorite song is Rocky Raccoon
Rating: 8/10 A fantastic double album and send off for The Beatles' peak creativity, really not bloated at all and excellent pretty much the whole way through. Removing my least favorites, like Wild Honey Pie and Why don't we do it in the road, really wouldn't even change this album much because they're such a short part of the runtime. I don't really care for Piggies Me and My Monkey but I would never take them away because I'm sure there someone out there's favorite Beatles songs. So many great songs, Revolution 9 is some cool weird experimental noisy shit that sounds like the end of the world
As someone whose experience with the Beatles is restricted to the inescapable and infectious early pop hits and the endlessly parodied eccentricities of the members themselves, The White Album provides an eye-opening range of musical styles showcasing what the Beatles are and can be. What feels more like a compilation of eclectic artists, this album is an enjoyable portfolio of work that can be enjoyed with the band's catalogue as a whole or just as perfectly as a standalone musical event.
Very Good. Highlights of the album: Rocky Raccoon Back in the USSR Ob-La-De... 8.75/10
Heard Before? That's the crux of the problem. The impact of the Beatles on post-1964 music is like the impact of the Bible on pre-20th century literature: inescapable. We are all born essentially having heard the Beatles already. But yes, I've heard it. Notes: - nothing that hasn't already been mentioned thousands of times. - I listen to music in order to learn and (occasionally) to be surprised. It's not the Beatles' fault, but there is none of that here. - I will say the sequencing stuck out this time, and I would always rather listen to whole Beatles albums than the 30 biggest songs over and over. Verdict: It's the Beatles. But if (like me) you enjoy self-indulgence and short songs, there is plenty of both here. Listen Again? Who knows? But it's a big world and there is so much I haven't heard a thousand times over.
The White Album is a good, varied selection and is always worth a listen. It *maybe* could have benefited from a little trim, but nonetheless it’s still a solid four.
Zone out a tiny bit. Classic
Listened to the whole thing and never really got tired of it. Knew a couple songs already but learned a few more good ones. Also just gonna make a note that I think The Offsprings song Why Dont You Get a Job sounds pretty dang similar to Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da.
Solid album all throughout, except for Revolution 9. Would give it a 3.5 if I could, but guess I'll round up for this one
Would be 5 stars if the chaff was cut off a bit. Some incredible songs on here of course
Overall a good album, disc 2 is better than 1. Plenty of classic Beatles songs overall, some cool proto metal with Helter Skelter and impressive sampling for the time, some songs were lazy or uninspired and the blues songs were slightly out of place. I give the album 4/5 in general and 3/5 for the Beatles
Had listened to a lot of the songs but never in order - many many favorites
Not perfect but still a Timeless album can’t go wrong
A bit too weeeird to be a good time
The Beatles were a bit weird sometimes weren't they
Definitely some solid songs, 4 stars
No private session used for Spotify. Some folks say this is the Beatles' best album, they are wrong. There are some great tracks on this album but there are also some complete stinkers. If this wasn't a double album, and therefore didn't have the crap like Wild Honey Pie, Bungalow Bill, and Rocky Raccoon this album could be their best, but it does, so it's not. Still a great album, showing the Beatles continual growth as musicians.
Fun and joyful pop. Love it!
A lot of fricken bangers, quite a few mid ah songs
i wanted to try to find enough holes to state that this album is not as good as all the hype, but it's impossible. with the exception of "birthday" it's almost all bangers. even though i find "revolution 9" unnecessary, it is not uninteresting. i appreciate the weirdness of it. i did love being reminded that "helter skelter" and "revolution 9" are essentially punk songs
While I recognize there are some that rank The White Album as the Beatles very best, here is my issue. There are some cuts that I find just mediocre and if I had my druthers, I would reduce this work to a single album, and that my friends, would be a stellar piece of work. It’s the Beatles though, and while I may have a few albums I prefer to this one, it is still a very good album, even if it contains too much material for my liking.
Some of my favourite songs of all time on this album, but I think it's just slightly too long, a few songs that I didn't get along with. But mostly an amazing listen.
Feels so harsh giving this a 4 when it's packed with some of the best songs of all time. But alas, here we are
The album drags on. At its best it can arguably be considered the greatest Beatles album but there is a messy second half in there that while groundbreaking, takes a smidge off the rating for me. 9/10 [KEEP]
They are doing so many different things, and doing them well. I don't think anyone believes this is a "perfect" record but that doesn't necessarily mean it can't be a 5 -- it certainly was a 5 in 1968 and it still has a good number of perfect songs that have more than withstood the test of time. The main critique you hear of this album is about the length and the "fluff", but I think that was kind of the point. It feels like they were just trying whatever the wanted without being confined to a single concept. They been there done that. To be that's what makes this record special. If the "fluff" was released as its own album, perhaps by a different band without the monumental expectations that the Beatles have cultivated, those songs would likely be more appreciated (when not placed next to Blackbird and Dear Prudence). Personal Favorites: Happiness is A Warm Gun, Rocky Raccoon, Helter Skelter 4.5
Not perfect, but with some of the greatest songs ever written.
This album is all over the place. Still a classic
At times I’ve made a personal cut of the White Album, eliminating the tracks I thought did not belong. But they all belong. This is who the Beatles were at time of release - exploring, starting to move in their own independent directions, dipping into weird, sometimes self-indulgent music. It’s sloppy and brilliant and sometimes dumb, but it is absolutely the Beatles. I still like to listen to Revolution 9,, because it’s the spiritual capper to an album that tries to encompass everything.
While my guitar gently weeps I will 8,5/10 Wow war das lang
Probably a 4 for the album. Classic Beatles songs. A bit too long tbh. Thinking about +0.5 stars for I will. But overall it’s still a four for me.
Back in the USSR, Dear Prudence, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La,Da, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Blackbird, Revolution... this album is just peppered with hits across it. while it was long, certainly, i can't image the excitement when you learned that the Beatles, one of the greatest bands ever, had released a double album. this album takes its experimentation seriously. some works, some doesn't, but all in all its a pretty great album. shout out to Yoko Ono for breaking up the beatles, way to go
Some great and then some just solid Beatles songs on here but man it did not need to be that long. I tend to give them a lot of leeway just because I’ve always been a fan but “wild honey pie” is probably one of the worst things in the history of the recording technology to ever be recorded
I have no musical talent, and I don't claim to be better than the Beatles, however........ I think I can make this better by cutting it down to a single album. 1. "Back in the U.S.S.R." (2:43) 2. "Dear Prudence" (3:56) 3. "Glass Onion" (2:18) 4. "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" (3:08) 5. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" (4:45) 6. "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" (2:47) 7. "Blackbird" (2:18) 8. "I Will" (1:46) 9. "Julia" (2:57) 10. "Birthday" (2:42) 11. "Yer Blues" (4:01) 12. "Sexy Sadie" (3:15) 13. "Helter Skelter" (4:30) 14. "Revolution 1" (4:15) Total length: (45:21) I do really like this album but it's way too long with too many meaningless tracks for me to give it 5 stars. Cutting it down to 45 minutes with just the best tracks would easily bring it to a 5 for me.
The second of the Generator's "Big 2" albums that are continually vying for the top spot on the Global list of top albums. I gave Rumours a 5, so what will The White Album get... Firstly, it's The Beatles, and I like The Beatles. Secondly, it's really fucking long, and I get annoyed when albums are really fucking long. It's clearly a great album but for me, there is just too much of it to feel like a coherent (double) album. It was The Beatles at the height of their powers, but also at the near height of their "actually we think we might hate each other" phase. They were too big and powerful to really say no to, and too competitive to feel like one of the other members was "winning", and the result is a two album epic with songs I would definitely consider filler. But then it also has some stone cold classic Beatles tunes, that are among their greatest ever songs. I love Back In The USSR (because The Beatles pretending to be The Beach Boys is always going to go down well with me), My Guitar Gently Weeps is incredible, Happiness Is A Warm Gun is one of my favourites, Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da is one of the catchiest songs ever written. But like, did you really need Piggies and Don't Pass Me By (sorry Ringo) on this record? Especially as you left off Hey Jude, which was recorded in the same sessions! Madness. This is so difficult to rate, because it's a cultural icon from perhaps THE cultural icons. But I've always been clear about my favourite Beatles album, and it's not The White Album. This is a 4.5 for me, but the lack of a ruthless editor means I'm marking it down rather than up. 4/5
It’s a classic. Diverse song composition, some weirdness thrown in, and fun to listen to. Not my fave Beatles album, but it’s always a good time
I will go to my grave saying that if the Beatles had edited it, this would be their best album, bar none. A 44-minute White Album? Incredible. Instead, the whole second "disc" feels uneven, and a little half-baked. But, goddamn, what amazing songs. A classic. 9/10
4,1/5
It was good, and it was foundational for sure, but it's undesirably long, lacks some larger cohesion, and by my modern standards and tastes doesn't feel like it deserves its title as one of the best albums ever made.
I was very late to the Beatles, having grown up in a household where my dad expressed indifference and my mom was more or less antagonistic. It wasn't until my adult life that I actually delved into the Beatles back catalog. This album is a monster, weighing in at 93 minutes. And while 93 minutes is a long time to spend in a single soundscape, this album is widely varied with great writing across the playtime. That said, my upbringing is such that I don't regard every fart that Paul McCartney and John Lennon cut to be some exquisite perfume. I find the first disc to be more compelling than the second, containing most of my favorites: Glass Onion, Julia, Happiness is a Warm Gun, and While My Guitar Gently Weeps. The second feels a little looser is some respects featuring two alternative takes of Revolution -- well one that is relatable (1) and the other that plays like some abstract psychedelic experiment (9) -- and some songs that feel a little less polished (e.g., Cry Baby Cry). And yet, the second half contains a few of my other favorites here: Savoy Truffle, Cry Baby Cry, and Helter Skelter. By and by I'd be hard pressed to say this isn't a great album, but I find it far from perfect. For me this is a solid 4 -- glad it exists, but I am tested by the long playtime.
Another great Beatles album with a lot of call backs to their older songs which I thought was pretty neat. Couple of standouts include Dear Prudence and Blackbird. Another odd congruency like Paul Simon a few albums ago; Revolver was our 16th album and we have 15 albums left after this one.
A 90 minute doozy of an album that has so many of their great songs on it. Really liked the variety of types of songs on here and it was all jsut classic Beatles. Revolution 9 made me feel like I was in one of those dreams that you have when you are falling asleep before a nap on the couch that are just really insane.
Would be perfect if Why Don't We Do It in the Road was never written
Lots of hit songs as well as plenty of other lesser known songs that are really good too. It's a classic album that was super influential. I've heard the hits on this album so many times just in passing that I don't need to seek it out but the other songs are worth listening to. They add some great variety.
Quintessential Beatles eclecticness. Silly goofy childlike songs interspersed with dark lyricism as on Yer Blues and Helter Skelter which would later inspire the development of Heavy Metal. Isn't it just so cool that on the same album exist the nursery rhyme-esque Obla-Di-Obla-Da and crooning about being suicidal?
The best Beatles
Some were great, some were OK, some were awful. Overall I thought it was decent and an enjoyable listen.
While this album is a drawn out hodgepodge of songs of varying styles and lengths, when the brain trust behind that is as creative as the Beatles, the product you receive is still quite good. I agree that many tracks could've been left out, but I also found myself enjoying many of the lesser-known cuts. I found the album. Does a pretty good job of keeping you entertained through variety, despite its length. This is one of my new favorite Beatles albums.
Brilliant, I wish I could give it a 4.5 So many diverse so songs.
There's songs which are amazing, some I don't like and some which are bizarre. It's a winner overall for me even if it polarises.
Too many filler tracks to be a 5. That said, It's still a masterpiece. The inner Beatles tension is felt by some of the heavier tracks, which in some cases fell inspired by Hendrix, but that's just me. I think John outshines Paul on this album. Best Ringo track with Don't Pass Me By, and George's incredible While My Guitar Gently Weeps, whilst being unknowingly cucked by Eric Clapton.
You can’t blame them for having tension and being headed for a breakup at this point—I can’t imagine how frustrating it would be to be in a band with Paul and have him invent Metal on Helter Skelter and then the next week he brings in Honey Pie
Like this needs a review.
Some of the most memorable Beatles songs, with some of their most forgettable.
the beatles knew they could release songs as singles right? great listen, but no cohesion.
7/10
This wasn’t what I was expecting but it was fun and good to hear super early and synthy drum n bass. I can see a lot of inspiration and samples coming from this! I wish I was driving at night to this album, or at least doing some cardio to feel the beat and speed!
Such a fascinating album. Has some of my favourite ever Beatles tracks - Back in the USSR, Dear Prudence, Helter Skelter - some genuinely interesting innovate work that's way ahead of its time...and some god awful nonsense. I always cringe at songs like Bungalow Bill. As often the case with double albums, you could make the greatest ever single LP if you just edited properly, but there you go. Still worth a 4 due to the many highlights, but just falls short of perfection
Hard to say no to some of those songs. Not my tea though. 3.9
There's this ongoing discussion about which Beatles album is the best one, a discussion I have my own thoughts on, and for me, this one isn't quite it. Sure, it's an excellent album, with a lot of great tracks, but I personally don't think it's their best. That said, it's still worth a strong 4.5 out 5.
Heard Many Times; 4; It's been a bit since I listened through this whole album, and like a few others I've only relistened to after a few years, I feel like I appreciated this album more. I enjoyed the diversity of the album; really like the stripped down, straightforward rock songs, the folkier songs, and the ones that are just strange and off-the-wall. Favorite Tracks: While My Guitar Gently Weeps; Helter Skelter
Side 1: Back in the USSR starts out swinging (although the parody is pretty hamfisted), Dear Prudence and all the way down to Blackbird absolutely slap. We wobbled with Piggies (another edgy commentary that felt like babies first capitalist critique), Rockie Racoon, Why Don't We Do It In The Road. Felt like some filler tracks and a big shift in quality. Side 2: Another rock n roll start on Birthday and Yer Blues, both initially starts as a standard blues is backed up by some really solid licks and wider production, we're cooking. Helter Skelter rocked, real progenitor for heavy metal, sadly spoiled by Charles Manson doing "that". Revolution 1 again has Lennon's lazy political analysis on display. Honey Pie is a really lovely song. Savoy Truffle is a banging b-side. Cry Baby Cry is another lovely one with great production, the organ linking with the bass is *chefs kiss*. Revolution 9 was an assult, deeply unsettling. To say this side was eclectic in an understatement.. All in all, a real tour through what the Beatles were about. Many hits, but also a fair few misses. Not bad for album no 9. 3.5 rounded up
What an absolute beast of an album. As one of the very few albums I had actually dipped my toes into before I started this list, The White Album is in a bit of a tough spot for me. There's no doubt this album is great. 30 tracks, any number of them having the potential to be someone's favorite, and each so stylistically distinct from the others in a way that causes the album to feel even larger than it already is. I've always been partial to Paul McCartney's vocals, and there's such a cool range of him here. Growing up listening to The Beatles with my parents maybe put them on a pedestal in my head. My parents thought they were great, the world thought they were great, and I liked their music so they must be great. Greatest of all time even, maybe. I've always been a sucker for vocal harmonies, something that's in the forefront across The Beatles discography, and a lot of their experimental or influential use of what I would call sound effects always made their songs fun, or at the very least interesting. But the more music I've gone out and found thanks to this list, and now coming back to the white album after so many years, I can't help but recognize that there are many other albums that just felt better to me. Ones that I enjoyed more as a whole than what was presented here by John, Paul, George, and Ringo. Despite knowing of the revolutionary influence this album had, and the great display of talent and creativity that is on display, I would much rather listen to A Hard Day's Night nine times out of ten. The same could be said of any of the other 5 star albums on this, my, list. Maybe it's a factor of too much of a good thing, side 1 and side 2 of this album easily being enough to stand on their own. Maybe it's my distaste for many of John Lennon's songs, here and elsewhere. At the end of the day, there's not enough enjoyment here for me to personally rank it with the other 5's on my list, though there is no doubt in my mind that this album could deserve one. Highlights: Back In The U.S.S.R. Dear Prudence Glass Onion Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da While My Guitar Gently Weeps Happiness Is A Warm Gun Blackbird Rocky Raccoon Birthday Helter Skelter Good Night Lowlights: Wild Honey Pie I'm So Tired Piggies Yer Blues Revolution 9
Great album, not too much to say here. If I listened to it a bit more it might end up being 5 stars but hey ho
Incredible. In any other band this would probably be their best work. With The Beatles, however, depending on the day, it could slide down to fourth best. It's strength and weakness is its eclecticness, giving it a wide variety of flavors and colors. This also causes it to have too far a range and too long a leash to make it comparable to the likes of Blonde on Blonde, Sign Of The Times, or London Calling in terms of the tops of non-concept rock-oriented double albums.
The White album... I have nothing to say that hasn't already been said. It's a bit all over the place, some fantastic songs, some pap. There's enough songs on there to make a single length album that's amazing.
Very solid album, just extremely bloated. Top 3: 1. While My Guitar Gently Weeps 2. Happiness Is A Warm Gun 3. Glass Onion Least Favourite Wild Honey Pie
I think, they have more magical albums then this)
I, surprisingly to me, haven't heard a lot of these songs. My dad was more of a (old style not racist) country aficionado when I was little. That and Irish trade and rebel songs. They're good though. Fun. Some make little to no sense lol Definitely a lot of drugs involved in this particular album. Jaunty stuff though. Liked listening while doing schoolwork AND bringing the hidden litter box cabinet up from the basement (we're getting 2 new cats in a few days (this is going to be a fun time capsule at some point!)) Ok, this album is weird lol I like it though.
Mes prefs: While My guitar gently weeps, I'm so tired, Blackbird, Yer Blues, Mother Nature's Son, Helter Skelter. A vomir: Ob-la-di ob-la-da, Birthday, Bungalow Bill, Glass Onion.
Very 90s movie sunny cold Thursday vibes.
I was loving this album and fully prepared to give it an easy 5 stars. Then I had to listen to Revolution 9. So here is your 4 stars.
generally don't get the love for this album, I will maybe get it one day, but it is deffo not my favourite beatles album. There are some outstanding songs on it but lots of weird stuff. But i guess for some peopel its nice to see what the boys came up with.
Obv its good
Hints of genius interspersed with drug-induced nonsense… presumably by ‘69 they were too big for the studios to give guidance. But I surprised myself… took me back to s time in life, and I’m still almost word perfect. Iconic.
Some absolute classics interspersed with some weird ones. Still overall a good album
There's no denying that this is a great album. It's full of hits, quality album tracks, and showcases each member's abilities and contributions. However, I think this one suffers from a classic case of double album syndrome. Is it a great album? Of course. Are there filler tracks and other questionable choices that could have easily been omitted if there weren't two LPs worth of space to fill? Unfortunately...yes. Honestly, it's nothing reflective of the Fab Four. There are 30 tracks on this bad boy, they're not all going to be zingers. Not even the greatest rock band ever could do that. Maybe it's too varied? There are a variety of styles and influences here, with some typical Beatles style weirdness sprinkled in for good measure. But for some reason it seems fragmented and kind of all over the place. It diverges from the more psychedelic sound of some of their previous records, and maybe that's them transitioning again into more of a pure "rock" band. It would be interesting to see what would have happened to their sound if they would have stayed together longer. "Abbey Road" and "Let It Be" are a taste. But would have The Beatles have sounded like in the 70's? According to Sir Paul... ELO.
This is an album I grew up with. My brother is a huge Beatles fan. Whenever he picked up an album, he would sit me down and make me listen to it with him. I may not have fully appreciated it when I was young, but as I got older, I grew to appreciate their style and contribution to music. So many eclectic tracks...definitely something for every mood.
As a great man once said, "It's great, it sold, it's the bloody Beatles' 'White Album, shut up!". Thank you Paul for such choice words, but let's consider why he said this. The White album gets a lot of conversation and as far as I can tell general consensus is this album is pretty widely liked... with a caveat. In my opinion this album is about 20% amazing, 50% good, 15% okay and 15%... I want to say be kind and say unimpressive but it's worse than that. Seriously we are given some career peaks with George's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", John's "Happiness is a Warm Gun" and Paul's "Blackbird", alongside massively important songs like Helter Skelter and Dear Prudence this album is absolutely stacked in terms of quality songs. Honey Pie when taken out of the context of the album is maybe the worst Beatles song, and Revolution 9 attempts to be artsy but is a touch too meaningless. I'm not even particularly a Yoko hater, I think the Beatles were doomed as soon as they started supressing George, but good lord her direct effect on John causing this song is reason enough especially for an 8 minute song on a 93 minute album. There's a blend of some incredible, interesting material in here and with each listen I find another song I like more than I thought I did, probably because listening to this in one sitting can become quite a task. Equally there is some real nonsense, for better or for worse, and I can't even be that critical considering I really like Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da. Meanwhile some songs fit well into the album but when isolated are just weird, like Rocky Raccoon for instance. I do think this album is good and even if not a big Beatles fan it's well worth a listen so you can take your pick of what songs do and don't deserve to be on this album the length of an actual movie. Also I wish "I Will" was 4 minutes long because good lord Paul sounds beautiful. Best songs: While My Guitar Gently Weeps / Happiness is a Warm Gun Worst songs: Honey Pie / Revolution 9 Rank compared to everything else so far: 17/54 (below Revolver, above Van Halen.)
Really surprised by the variety within this album, I guess I didn’t know the Beatles balled like that.
I did a lot of research on the origination of the songs for this album and the recording. It basically happened at the beginning of the end for the Beatles. Yoko Ono was now fully on the scene, which caused issues between John Lennon and the rest of the band. Ringo Starr left the band completely for a few weeks. Most of the songs were written while the band was attending a Transcendental Meditation course in India. It's amazing to me that this album came out of all that chaos. Having said that, a good chunk of the album is made up of songs that clearly belong to one band member or the other. Rare on the album are songs where the band is one cohesive unit. Some of the songs are just bizarre and really not that good. But the number of absolute classics and iconic songs that were not only classics for the Beatles, but songs that have been covered over and over again, is a tribute to how talented they were not only as a band, but as individuals.
Solid
8.5 / 10
This comes in at 3rd in my ranking of Beatles albums, it’s still brilliant it almost feels like listening to a greatest hits album. It’s REALLY long though. I did find disk 2 to be slightly worse than disk 1 which is a shame because If disk 1 was released as an album on its own this would be a sure fire 5
I think this album gets longer everytime I listen to it. It has some of the best Beatles songs (while my guitar gently weeps) alongside some of the worst (revolution 9)
I really like the feel, the lyrics, and the musical composition itself. Will definitely listen to again :>.
Let's say it's 1970 and you're 12 years old and you go with your saved-up allowance money to buy a Beatles album, and then you get home and are greeted with "Revolution 9." I don't have a clear memory of my initial reaction to this record, but I imagine that experience was fairly formative, considering the nonlinear stuff I like to listen to these days. This isn't a perfect record; there are goofy bits on here like "Bungalow Bill" and "Rocky Raccoon" that I could have lived without ever hearing again. And the apolitical theme of "Revolution 1" felt off to many people on the left at the time, and feels kinda problematic now too, considering everything going on at the moment. But hey, it's a double album, so there's a lot of good stuff left to hear if you skip those. So while my general position re the Beatles is that people need to quit playing them all the time already (and that Siouxsie and the Banshees covers of Beatles songs are better than the originals), still: 4/5 stars for the white album.
Lots of silly filler in an otherwise amazing classic album. Could have been 5 if it was about ten songs shorter.
It's great man, it's great. It's - you know, it's great. Yeah sure yeah
An important album of its time. Sounds a little bloated now and could have benfited from being provided as a single album.
My first Beatles album, ever, that I’ve listened to in full. Yet another band that I know and like the hits, but have never done a discography deep dive. I even have two of their “best of” albums on vinyl that I inherited that I should probably give a spin at some point. Starting off strong with Back in the USSR. I only really knew this song in passing, but a great listen to really pay attention to. Dear Prudence was a nice simple little song. I really liked the simplicity of the guitar through most of the song. Going into Glass Onion, I thought it was solid. Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da was very fun musically wise. The shaker and percussion was great, and even though I didn’t catch a lot of the lyrics on first listen, I liked those too. Wild Honey Pie was definitely, out there, totally. It reminded me of some of the stuff I’ve heard off magical mystery tour. Bungalow Bull was fun and I liked the narrative aspect of it. My Guitar Gently Weeps was a gorgeous track. It was so melodic. *slight pause as I drive home and listen to the rest of the album* Ok I’m back to writing this after getting home. Oh boy to I have a lot to say. The first little bit of this album was SO good, and there are still highs to come, but… well… you’ll see. Happiness is a Warm Gun, Martha my Dear, I’m so Tired. Serviceable tracks, not my favourites off the album but they work. Blackbird, other than giving me flashbacks from when I took guitar lessons at 14, was an amazing track and I’m glad it lived on to give a punk rock obsessed teen an interesting introduction to guitar, This is where the album, and I tbh, go off the rails a bit. I read a review on here at one point that said if an albums over an hour, it just means the right cuts weren’t made, and with this album I agree. Piggies was… a song. I was really thrown off by the random snorting thrown in. Like it wasn’t horrible, but in the big scheme of things, this album is over an hour, it could’ve easily made an outtakes album. Same with Rocky Raccoon, which I can only describe as sounding like a mid 90s Canadian Edutainment song. If you know you know. The rest of disc one is alright. Nothing really to comment on, but they all sort of blended together for me. Disc 2. Birthday was a fine opener and I loved Mother Natures Son. I thought it was very pretty. Helter Skelter, of course was fun! Was happy to see that on this album, same with Revolution 1, which is a classic and one that my dad started singing as soon as I told him this was today’s album. I seem to remember liking Savoy Truffle, but I don’t remember what I liked about it or anything about the song. Revolution 9 deserves a paragraph all to itself. Imagine for a second you’re driving home, it’s dark, 8pm, you’ve just had a long day at work and been to the gym and are super ready to get home, eat dinner, and go to bed. Then, about 10 min from home, this comes on. You don’t know the track, so you just think it’s a quick little, somewhat strange intermission. Then it keeps going. For almost 8 and a half minutes I drove, thinking it would be over soon, and every time I thought maybe it’ll be over, it kept going. I think it’s the closest to going insane I’ve ever been. I get that a lot of the Beatles charm comes from drug filled genius, but holy. Good Night was beautiful, no complaints. Just the fact I couldn’t enjoy it fully as I was still reeling from the Revolution 9 experience. Overall, the highs of this album were so high, but the averageness of the lows really took me out of it. Maybe I just don’t get it, maybe being born 36 years after this album came out wasn’t the right choice to enjoy it fully. There are such good points on this album, I was so prepared to give it a 5, but I just can’t. Maybe if it had been edited down to 40-50 min of just the best, it would’ve been a 5 for me. For that, I sadly give it a 4/5 ⭐️. Maybe I’ll go sit and spin one of the greatest hits records I have and have a think about what I’ve done. 13/1089
I know it's historically acclaimed album. But personally, I did not enjoy disc 2 that much.
Iconic album Kind of sounds like a child's book... with dark content... Blackbird is a hearty work of art
I almost want to give it 5, there's just a few songs that miss for me, when you compare 'Martha my Dear' to 'Back in the USSR', the album feel a bit disjointed, but all in all an excellent album, breath of fresh air from Norah Jones!

Great
A great album with some of the best Beatles songs but loses a star for some filler. 3.5
Some classics, some new favourites and a couple of duds. While long but while good
Great album
Great
I love The Beatles, they’re constantly fighting with Pink Floyd for my favourite artist. I listen to them relentlessly every year. Having said that, I am firmly in the camp that the White Album would perfect if they just trimmed the fat off it. This album has some great songs on it: Blackbird, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Julia but Jesus Christ there is some shit here too. Obviously a big part of this album is just how fractured this band of near-brothers had become. Some parts of the White Album just feel like solo work, there’s a bit of the Beatles charm missing (and half the time it’s because the rest of the Beatles are missing such as on Back in the USSR which has no Ringo, Blackbird is purely Paul and Julia is purely John). It’s such a strange album and that’s certainly an interesting part of it, it just feels like when you finally reach a good part of the album you get hit with shit like Wild Honey Pie. Probably the only Beatles album I can’t give a perfect score to.
Having heard this on and off for 50 years I think it is rather over hyped. George Harrison at his best and a collection of music hall tunes and parodies of American popular music. Some very fine songs indeed but the demos album left me a bit cold. The hippy fascination for art nouveau and the 19th century (music hall) was charming but always a bit of a puzzle to me.
Solid album by a stellar band.
8/10
Не плохо. Я и до этого их слушал, но особо не обращал внимания на все песни их альбома. Мне понравилось
Brilliant. A masterpiece. Respectfully, still didn't make me a fan.
This is actually my first time listening to the "White Album" in full. I get the hype now. My only criticism is that it drags on ever so slightly. Not my favourite Beatles album, but still incredibly strong. 'Blackbird' remains one of the most beautiful songs ever made
There's a 5/5 album in there somewhere.
I knew the big songs but never heard the whole album before. Ya, nice.
ya lo conocía y me encanta, no es mi favorito de beatles pero entiendo porqué es considerado de los mejores. canciones fav: while my guitar gently weeps; blackbird; i will
long album so bound to be hit or miss. but overall a hit
Taylor gave it a 3. Some great songs but also some weird songs you don’t want to listen to.
What a ridiculous album! Drugs, hey? Also, Paul is obviously the silly one. So much tuba, which I get given that it's the bass of the brass section. I get the critiques that this album is all over the place. Which is simultaneously it's weakness, but could also be it's strength. Depending on the strength of your drugs, of course. Still, the bangers are bangers. While my guitar gently weeps sounds absolutely fabulous. Happiness is a Warm Gun is just weird. Love the tenderness of Blackbird, but who doesn't? I should learn that on the guitar one day. Also, Dear Prudence. Yes please. I still think it's hilarious that I went through ten years of my life thinking that it was a Siouxsie and the Banshees song. The follies of youth. Oh, and once again, do the mono version. Gawd it's so much better. Otherwise you have Ringo bonking away in only one ear. Sure, listen to Revolution 9 in stereo for the fun effects, but John said that the album is better in mono. And are ya going to fight with John? I thought not. Speaking of Revolution 9. I just realized that Skinny Puppy borrowed heavily from this in on Love in Vein. Tres cool. Then again they also sampled (kinda) Helter Skelter on the Rabies album, so that somewhat makes sense. In a fucked-up Skinny Puppy kinda sense. Still, I love it. Anyhow four stars. Can't rate the Beatles less than that, right?
Mooie nummers, maar sommige ook niet.
4.8
listened
i’ve kind of always been a self proclaimed beatles hater but this album is very enjoyable. honestly i’m enjoying the whole story a lot more than i would have expected. halfway through and looking up copies of the album for my record player lol
My sense is that with this album the good outweighs the bad. There are some absolute gems on this album, but it also feels like they just recorded everything that popped into their heads.
4.5
15 favorites but also my two least favorite Beatles songs. Makes that a 4/5.
This is not a beatles album I've listened to that much. Or at least I felt so initially. After this listen it does feel very homely in a strange sort of way. it is just a strange album... feels sort of out of character for them, like it doesn't quite fit with the rest of their discography... I kind of like it
The world doesn’t need one more word written about this album. Four stars.
Pretty long, beatles always deliver
It’s a solid album, just not the biggest fan of the Beatles
Definitely a solid album, lots of fun nostalgic songs
Of course love the beatles, but this album isnt THEIR best as a collective group. The whole album really reflects on when they began to focus on themselves individually instead of performing as a band Each song is written and sung by the author (except for good night bc John Lennon is a bit of a coward) and they use the band almost as their backup band if that makes sense. Best songs to me: Back in the USSR, Happiness is a warm gun, Martha My dear, I will, Julia, Honey Pie, Sexy Sadie, While My guitar gently weeps
So many great songs on this but it’s also really long and there is stuff that’s rubbish on it. Helter skelter alone makes it very close to a 5 though.
listened to on my vinyl so far like a lot gives very much late may early june vibes i give it like an 8/10 i would have to listen to it more but i like it so far i also like the song birthday and it has a lot of classics
Don't get me wrong, there is quite a lot of great things here, and some even better than the rest, but also some real strange things, yes very beatles, but just left me thinking this album wouldn't be missing anything if a few songs weren't on it.
I love the white album, as it was one of my first Beatles exposures. Love the variety, even of there are a few duds.
overall a GREAT album, I wouldn't say there is no skips tho. Some of the greatest songs ever written came from it(my top three): while my guitar gently weeps, happiness is a warm gun or helter skelter. I wouldn't necessarily listen to wild honey pie again but I was quite surprised by long, long, long, it was not a song I particularly listened to before but I loved the drums and the vocals on it. A few of my favorites also included dear prudence, I will and blackbird.
Wow post Sgt Peppers Beatles this should be brilliant and is … mostly But the Beatles are thier own worst enemy Imaginative , yes Revolutionary, check Pushing boundaries , definitely Genre bending , again yes Good , Hmm ... probably Great … no Brilliant, beautiful songs with interesting changes are intermixed with songs that feel like someone taking the piss. Ob-la-di … sounds like a song for school kids to sing - oh wait that’s why I dislike it Continuing on to the story of bungalow bill - great in bits but the chorus and refrain fell like a joke Can any album with these on be a 5 Obviously, the Beatles are great - and there are enough great songs on this album (some that got plenty of radio play and other lesser-knowns) to warrant a 5-star rating. But - there are a lot of crap on this album too. It sounds like the Beatles were just like, "fuck it we are the Beatles “ Yet another double album that is harmed by too many filler . I do love that they were not concentrating on a polished product but this is a step too far. Even if there are elements to love in all songs. Is don’t make me cry an album track ? If this were a single album ? A sure fire 5 star if it was cut to 1 album In giving it 4 over a 3, mostly as I appreciate the space a double album gives to experiment
So many songs on this album or bangers. As an album as a whole feels like a mishmash of randomness. Thats why for me it is a four stars and not 5.
I really wasn't sure about this after one listen. But again with certain bands and reputations I'm more inclined to give them a second chance. Of course there are some absolutely brilliant songs on here (Blackbird , While My Guitar...) but also a lot of stuff I've never heard. The lyrics are often a bit simple, or plain silly, but the tunes are quality. Could have been a 5, but I can't give a 5 to an album that has a track of jumbled sonic mess. It's a skip every time (though I will make an exception when I finally review The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway)
Although it does have a pretty big handful of forgettable tracks, The White Album also has the highest concentration of great Beatles' songs in my opinion. More than any other, it seems to really explore a wide range of sounds and genres with each song being unique. It's really close between this and Sgt. Pepper for my favorite Beatles' records, although I'm definitely not the biggest fan.
The first half of this is great. While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Back in the USSR, Martha, Blackbird, Oh Bla Di (yeah it's catchy), others. But the rest is a mix of quite nice or bang average or (some) not very good. With Helter Skellter mixed in. I've never been the greatest Beatles fan but while I can appreciate the sheer range of things here, a bolder producer might have suggested an edit.
This is so good. There are so many incredible moments, fascinating ideas and playful joyous bits of music in here and since I am very familiar with it the double album was isn't as annoying as others (but still, it is looooong), but it's more that in there they have some stuff that should have been b-sides, that should have been deep cut tracks that only avid Beatles fans needed to hear. You can't have revolution number 9 on a 5/5 album, you just can't. As clever as it was at the time, as forward thinking. But there is easily a 5/5 album in there, probably a long one. while my guitar gently weeps is just glorious. Blackbird, USSR, dear prudence, I will, helter skelter, there is so much greatness... but they added more that wasn't 5/5 and it must just be a 4, which makes me a little sad.
Lots of variety and styles throughout the album. Thought it was a little long and lacked a theme but very enjoyable nevertheless.
Hun andere albums zijn beter
Fav Song: while my guitar gently weeps
Early beatles kills
A real classic. Some of the best Beatles' songs on it (While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Happiness Is A Warm Gun back to back is a crazy combo). The first heavy metal song (Helter Skelter). Experimental Revolution 9. But I think generally it could be a bit shorter.
Such a good album, I don’t care what anyone says. Only song I’d skip is Revolution 9, just not a fan. Love every other song though!
Some of my fav Beatles songs are in here, but now I've found a few new favs after listening to the album as a whole!
Even though I've never listened to this album in its entirety before now, I'm really impressed at how many songs I *have* heard over the years, and I can certainly see/hear why this seems to be generally considered The Beatles' best album, and one of the best albums of all time. I don't really agree with that latter estimation, but I'm also not a huge Beatles fan so I'm probably not a good judge of that. I feel like there are just as many duds on this double album as good songs, and only a few great songs: "Dear Prudence", "While my guitar gently weeps" (I didn't realize until I read the Wikipedia entry that Clapton guest guitared on this, which makes this probably *his* greatest song too), possibly "Happiness is a warm gun", and the beautiful "Blackbird". I also enjoyed a few not-so-perfect tunes that were more gimmicky but still appeal to me, especially "Ob-la-di, ob-la-da", "Rocky raccoon", and "Helter skelter". Regardless, though, there's no denying the immense influence of this album and its place in Western music history, despite the kind of incoherent eclecticism that hovers over the whole album and paints a picture of a band desperately pumping out the remainder of what they could manage to put together (and often only in pieces, given how few tracks have all four of them playing together).
3.97/5 Stars Top Songs: While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Glass Onion, Why Don't We Do It In the Road
Das album ist sehr gut um es nebenbei zu hören und ein paar vereinzelte Lieder sind sehr Ohrwurm tauglich Lieblingslieder: The continuing story of Bungalow bill Julia Everybody‘s got something except me and my monkey Lieder die ich schon kannte: I will Blackbird
Better than coldplay
I joke, I know, and while it's easily my least favourite of later stage Beatles Albums, it is still the Beatles.
Its all over the place and thats the charm
Didn’t have time to listen to the whole thing
This album was the first time I realised the Beatles are really capable of anything. All songs are really diverse and unique which probably has a lot to do with the fact that all members wrote songs for this one album. This also means you can't judge the full record as something cohesive and makes it feel more like a compilation album. This is of course especially noticeable when you hear the sixth beatle Yoko Ono's influence in Revolution 9. Taking that song out of consideration this album is really solid and my second favourite records of the Beatles in general.
I was born a little late to understand the impact the Beatles had - My parents also didn't listen to them, so my first exposure was through references in TV shows and movies. That aside, this album has a lot of really catchy songs, back in the U.S.S.R was a strong start to the album, and I've heard ol-la-di, ob-la-da previously (and loved it) It was fun to hear how playful this album got.
Revolution 9 is bullshit.
Not my favorite Beatles album and the first disc is superior (except for Helter Skelter) but it’s still objectively awesome
8/10 - Really incredible first album with a lesser second album. In its totality it’s a 8/10 but the first album was a 10/10. A few good songs on the back half of the project, but with this many songs, there wasn’t a way for this album to be all hits and no misses. My 3rd or 4th favorite Beatles album, but in most other bands catalog this would be their pinnacle. The Beatles were just that good.
I love the scattered nature and length of this album. Obviously the fat could've and probably should've been trimmed, but that's part of the enjoyment. On the first disk I would've cut out Wild Honey Pie and Don't Pass Me By, and on the second disk there's Birthday and Revolution 9. This thing is so dang good but I can't rate it higher than this with some of the misses. Low 9/10
This is awesome. I wasn’t sold on it at first. It of course has some amazing classic songs right off the bat but there were a few weird ones where I didn’t know where they were going on but it makes sense now. Really cool.
Ob-La-Di Ob-La-Da, Blackbird, While my guitar gently weeps,…
Such a great album, with a lot of really fantastic tracks to start it off, especially While My Guitar Gently Weeps. While I do appreciate the ingenuity of it, honestly I don't think it had the legs to quite reach a 5, as the second half of the album has a lot of songs that drag or don't mesh. I think I may revisit this one later on in the list to try it again and see if it changes, but for now, it's a 4.
Spretigt men allt utom Revolution 9 flyter som smör in i hörselgången. Vad betyder det egentligen? Hur ska man kunna bedöma utan att ta in mytbildningen. "Åååh de var så trötta på varandra här". Nu slår vi på klippet när Prince smeker upp While my guitar gently weeps.
Lots of ups and downs, as this album feels too long and not cohesive enough. There are some amazing songs and a lot of fillers.
Too many songs, but a good album, rare gems
I enjoyed the album. I think this is the first album from The Beatles I've heard in its entirety.
Best Track - "Back In The U.S.S.R"
It's growing on me. I like Rubber Soul and Revolver more on those first listens though
My first real exposure to this album, and it's a great album, and I flip-flopped between 4 and 5 stars. A lot of great stuff, a few items I didn't care for. I understand we're taking music to strange new places with this one, just a few points where it took me out of the album.
i mean det är ju beatles dvs för bra. kul att lyssna på flera mindre kända låtar
Love it 4/5
A lot of good songs, but feels all over the place from time to time. For me, it kind of lacks the structure/"identity" I expect from a 5/5 album. Probably slightly above 4, but not the full 5/5.
Back in the USSR is an amazing opener. Followed immediately by the lovely deceleration of Dear Prudence. Blackbird is incredibly beautiful and well constructed; the same can be said of While My Guitar Gently Weeps. But it’s hard to sustain that kind of quality through a double album. The White Album features a number of very experimental pieces, and those contribute to its lore and influence. But some of those experiments, while interesting, are not so listenable — like would I listen to this twice in a row? Would it work to have these tracks on “random” during a party? Some of the experiments become a little self indulgent. That’s fine, I appreciate the effort. But it does not necessarily make for a superior listening experience. This is a fantastic, amazing, and influential album it’s a spectacular 4.
4 for The Beatles is a 5 for most other bands. It's a 4 in comparison to their other albums. Turn this into a single album, and it's an easy 5
This was a fantastic album
I've already listened to his album (32). Side A is stellar, but then it gets progressively less wonderful. Even though it's amazing to think that this was released in 1968, we gotta admit that there are a few duds in there.
Quintessential Beatles. One of their strongest offerings. Great songwriting with a variety of sounds.
Good to spend time with a classic, gorgeous moments
Una locura la magia que hicieron en 2 discos. Masterpiece. 8/10
Nostalgic and is still pretty good
Important music.but not really my genre.
I think on my relistening to the entire Beatles discography that White Album may now be my favorite of the band. Of course the length and sheer amount of Beatlemania that is on display here surely helps the group, but the songwriting all across the board is arguably the best the boys ever had. It is weird and a bit janky with how varied the tracklist is, but when taking a step back you can see just how surprisingly well it flows together for the most part even with the constant genre shifts. It is a larger than life painting of the band to this point with everything in between and even some new sounds they never dabbled with before. Some of my favorite tracks from here have to be Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da (I song I always quote unironically), Helter Skelter, and Rocky Raccoon to name a few but just about every song here I enjoyed quite a fair bit. Of course on each disc of this project there is one odd song that feels even more out of place than the rest and it is Wild Honey Pie and Revolution 9, I tried getting down with both tracks but they simply never clicked with myself despite me really trying to open my mind. Honestly for this album being 1 hour and 33 minutes and only really having 2 misses in the entire runtime, the shortest and longest song here, that isn't too bad. The band was coming down from their Psychedelic Pop/Rock phase after really throwing themselves out in the open and releasing some really stellar tracks, but now are returning to a strictly Rock phase. You can still feel the hints of the remaining Psychedelia remaining but for the most part the band had mostly cut entire ties with those sounds to finish off their years in a more rocking way. I found this album, even with it's noticeably large length, to be quite replayable and enjoyable throughout the entire runtime. It is catchy, funny, thoughtful, and an all around good time for any Beatles fan like myself. White Album may not be everyone's favorite from the group, but I think to a certain extent it is their most impressive as it really challenged the band to go places they never had been before while sustaining their fans for the duration of what is for most a very harsh runtime. All in all White album is nothing short of a classic and while I do wish those two filler tracks were cut out, it still doesn't stop it from being a classic that should continue to be praised over 50 years later.
Super interesting to listen to it in full - some great tracks (obviously), but some weird ones as well - fun.
No es su mejor, pero son los beatles, que mas quieres
More good stuff on here than I remember
Yeah it's good! It's got a lot of hits! And also songs that are good and riveting but not my favorite! So I give it a 4.
Pretty shameful this is my first full Beatles album to listen to. Music like Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Hendrix etc. always appealed to me more growing up. Of course I've heard a good chunk of these throughout the years but listening from start to finish is an enjoyable experience. There's an argument to be made that the album has 10/15 songs too many, particular when you compare the classics on disc 1 vs disc 2. Regardless I enjoyed both albums and found some gems I'd never heard before. Top end of 4 stars for this album, likely an easy 5 if it was a tight 15 track album. Just loses it's steam on disc 2. (4) I loved this album as a kid. I had the record; and would play it for my birthday every year. But, I know it too well to critique it, there are a lot of songs here that are fun but not of greatness, rocky raccoon, back in the USSR; this is not their greatest album. Rubber Soul is a lot better.
I wanted to be a hater for this one really bad. I love the Beatles, but so far I never had this album in my top 3-4 records by them. It IS much better than I thought it would be. I'd still rate it maybe their 4th best, and it does have a lot of fillers, but it has to be at least a very high 4
Pretty good. I do love the more uptempo songs on this album, Back in the USSR being the standout for me.
Siin albumil on head Biitlite klassikat.
Klassikko
Although filled with some of the best Beatles material, there's also a lot of filler in this album which detracts quite a lot. If this was a leaner album, I'm quite convinced it would be their best, but as is I'm not too interested to listen to it again. I'll just look for the hits I enjoy
Kind of a hard album to rank, it feels bloated with a lot of songs that weren’t very good and could have been scratched, but then it also has some of the best songs the Beatles ever made, so overall I feel like it deserves a 4
I never get the weird Beatles songs until I hear them in context. Then the whole thing makes sense. I think this is much greater than the sum of its parts
On this album, up is down, left is right and inside is outside. Perhaps tired of the conceptual weight of the *Sgt. Pepper* and *Magical Mystery Tour* Technicolor extravaganzas, the The Fab Four intentionally put a perverse twist on their sound, embracing parody and pastiche, and putting ironic distance between themselves and their material. Only a few of the tracks, like "Dear Prudence", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Blackbird", are played straight; nearly everything else is warped, fun-house mirror style. Regardless, the band remained committed to presenting these songs in the best light possible, even on near-novelty songs like "The Continuing Story Of Bungalow Bill" and "Rocky Raccoon". As a whole, it has a very specific character different than the rest of the band's catalog; however, 90-plus minutes of deliberate weirdness can be a bit much for one sitting.
Interesting to listen to this the whole way through. I've heard of many of these songs but not actually listened to them before. Lots of good songs, but the definitely some misses too that bring the album down a bit.
I've come on here and ripped a lot of the Beatles albums in prior reviews, but this one is actually pretty good. That being said, I still have my gripes here. This album is kind of all over the place. It's very clear that the each of the (relevant) band members started going off in the own direction and writing their own stuff. Not a knock, there's a lot of variety here. It can be a little disorienting because some of these guys were into some pretty freaky shit and the lyrics on some of these are genuinely uncomfortable. And for being hailed as some of the greatest song writers of all time, there are a couple of songs where they just repeat the same line the entire time. Overall, I liked this one a lot more than I've liked any other Beatles album. I thought there was a ton of creativity on this one, which I honestly don't know if you can say about a lot of their other albums. Understanding that this is one of their most beloved works, I still can't help but think that this group is overrated, but the absolute simping of this group by boomers makes more sense here than it does on any other album I've heard from them to date.
Good mix of the Beatles' commercial work and their more funky songs.
This was the album I bought in my 20s when I was trying to deal with the fact that I had never really listened to the Beatles. I tried to get into it but never really did. I still don't really care for it, or for the Beatles in general. I recognize it as a great album, except for that number nine garbage.
Nothing more needs to be said about the Beatles or this album.
Me gustó la separación de los discos. Sin sorpresa Rev 9 es mi favorito solo por lo bizarro que es. Nota: 3.7
I've never been a big fan of the Beatles, but this was a very good listen. So many strong songs, just couldn't deny it anything less than a 4/5. Blackbird is a lovely song.
One of the most famous albums ever, but only their 3rd or 4th best album. It's a long double album with multiple throw away songs - that are still charming and work. Pitchfork: 10.0 Rolling Stone: Top 500 Albums #29 Best Songs Dear Prudence While My Guitar Gently Weeps Blackbird Why Don't We Do It In The Road? Julia Mother Nature's Son Good Night
I'm not going to do a traditional review at this time as I've previously heard the album & Phish's live version(sans no.9) I'm going to ask questions. Is every Beatles album a 5 star album? What makes an album 5 stars? Does the bloat of a double album make it a lesser album than single album? Are going to accept that this is 5 star album because "it's ThE wHiTe AlBuM" or are you going to critically listen to it? Do you start with 5 stars & deduct due to lesser songs not being as good as the "hits?" How does one review a legendary album? These are the questions I ask when reviewing a legendary album. This is part of fun of doing this list.
Double album, lots of losers, fractured Helter skelter While my guitar Back in the ussr
The famous White Album by The Beatles. This album is mildly experimental in nature with multiple styles of music throughout. Having been on a retreat in India and written most of the songs there, it feels like they wanted to just really get into their feels, yet at the same time it seems as though they placed all of the songs written since their last album onto this record. Whilst there are some absolute classic Beatles songs throughout this double album, I wish it was curated a little better. Best: Blackbird Worst: Good Night
Some great stuff some silly stuff…not their best but, hey, it’s the Beatles!!
Yes, it's the Beatles and the album does feature some great songs, but it also sounds like they've put just everything they could think of on this album. Lot of lows with some really great highs.
4.25 Not my favorite Beatles album but still a classic.
This is the only double album the band released during its tenure. It's an experience that contains classics and many good songs all around.
Had some great songs but the album was too long. I think if they removed half of the tracks they would have had a very good album
Loistava levy kuten saattoi odottaakin. 4,25/5.
It's very good but not my favourite Beatles album. Favourite track is Blackbird
Good stuff
A truly eclectic mix of songs, including some greats, but also a lot of filler and B-tier Beatles, to the point where I could happily skip the entirety of Side 4.
I couldn't be bothered to listen to it all again but I do enjoy it on the whole. McCartney at his most Lennonesque, George and Ringo having a go. Shame about Bungalow Bill, that song is shite
Not my fav Includes album, but obvs a great adventurous work. Some true bangers.
Als komplettes Album betrachtet garnicht mal so nice, weil sehr viel bullshit dabei ist. Aber kranke banger wie While my guitar gently weeps, Back in the USSR, Blackbird, Julia, Helter Skelter etc. reißen alles EXTREM nach oben, was sonst nur ein Abwechslung aus WEIRD WEIRD shit und Kindersongs wäre 3,6/5
Classic for a reason. Loses a star for being too long due to a couple of stinkers.
Lindo e muito abrangente. Vários estilos musicais e com a sonoridade única dos Beatles.
I liked this one quite a bit. It had many good songs, and my only qualm is that it was a bit to long
What can you say? It's almost 5 star worthy but I'll save that for others. This is a great album, iconic in many ways. Are there some fillers? Yes. Is it full of hits? Yes. Being a double album it's tough to be flawless all the way through.
I didn’t enjoy this album until I’d read up on it. First spin through was, on the whole, pretty lacklustre – I disliked about as many of the tracks as I enjoyed, and even those I liked whiffed a bit of a kind of contamination unique to being nearby “Piggies”. Second time through was an improvement, and I’d tuned my ear into hearing only the ten or eleven tracks I’d enjoyed first time through. Third listen through, just to be sure, was accompanied by Wikipedia (surely up there with, spoiler, The Beatles for greatest achievement of the 20th century?). And that’s when it all comes crashing in. Context. The missing piece. I can scarcely believe it, but life’s like that sometimes: in my long struggle to understand what the fuss was about, I had never thought to put The Beatles in context. Why, I think, boils down to too high expectations; a point that crosses quickly into a debate of aesthetics. Without me ever having consciously caught on before, it seems that any musician beyond a certain popularity threshold – a threshold I’ve arbitrarily, unnecessarily calibrated in my own head over however many years – there’s an expectation that the hyped thing (the album, the song) must demonstrate, to me, an immediate value in-itself. I must be wowed on the spot. As applied to the work of The Beatles – wildly popular – I have brooked no compromise; it must be grab-me-by-front lobe brilliant, quickly. Anything less – and by “less” I mean anything that’s less easy to love, and might therefore require me to do some work in meeting it halfway – is doomed to disappoint. That disappointment is perturbing, alienating, even. In it, I am then forever the one who “doesn’t get it”. Far worse than unmoved, I’m effectively shut out: denied an experience that’s been so generously doled out to millions, maybe even a billion by now, across generations. Those fucks, how dare they?! What’s particularly galling – about me, to me – is that I’m an otherwise patient person. I enjoy modern art very much. Tediously so. I’ve taken maybe six different people to see My Disco – at least four of whom have been, I suspect, extremely gracious in humouring both me and the band by remaining there against their better judgement. It would be fair to see that I seek out experiences that to some extent challenge me (and champion those that move me; I’d like to think I’m more portentous, as in early, than I am pretentious, as in late, but the hit rate on that isn’t convincing) … just not if it’s, e.g. The Beatles. Why the resistance? Maybe I read too much Adorno; maybe I clung to the safety of snobbishness; maybe admitting the opposite felt wan, vulnerable. Maybe I was just being lazy. Maybe, maybe. Not to worry. I’m a fucking idiot. Can you believe it took for me to read that the White album was recorded as a bit of a mixed bag because the band was trying new things for me to realise that the weird, cobbled together feel of the album might have come about because these mere mortals were trying some things? And then suddenly I’m picturing it: four supremely talented, internationally feted young men saying “we can’t just do Sgt Peppers again” (props to the implication that it’s because they nailed it first time around) and so … not. Not resting on any one thing; sticking their necks out, trying on some new hats (Beach Boys? Donovan?) and some familiar ones (Kinks?). Numbering the records to nurture that sense of personal connection with the audience – a guarantee that The Beatles sees you, but a move that’s maybe, as much as anything else, a request for permission to miss the mark sometimes too? Anyway, an even longer story short, having successfully humanised The Beatles, I started to really like them. I stopped asking them to nail it every time – and in reply they stopped failing. It’s a paradox that turns on a single, simple premise, really. I was never afraid The Beatles were letting me down, I was afraid I was failing them as a listener. And that’s the context. Now what of the songs? Ah whatever, enough’s been said about those.
Some really fascinating songs! Some of them didn't land, but all were interesting. Crazy how many songs I knew from other places instead.
Now this was challenging. The white album is actually two albums - one solo album by John and one by Paul plus some extra stuff by George (among them the great "While my Guitar Gently Weeps"!) and Ringo - totally shuffled. A significant share of the songs are actually parodies of other stuff running at that time, making the album even broader style- wise and thus less coherent. For me, the Beatles always stood out by combining various styles in each of their songs. In contrast, the white album features a new style in every song. Hence, I personally found it less convincing than I had actually expected (because I like the experimental approach).
I feel like this was the only Beatles album needed on this list. It really gives a good mix of the band when I feel like they were at their best. It is a little pop, a little deep and a little psychedelic. It also seemed to highlight all of the members pretty well. It also had some deep lyrics and some more just fun playful ones. On the flip side this album does kind of go everywhere. I am not sure where it was in their list of albums but it felt like it might be falling between different musical eras for them. Leaving it slightly lacking in terms of a cohesive album.
This is an eclectic collection of songs. I like their anything goes approach to this album. Some songs are better than others. It has a few hits but most of the songs are more like interesting Beatles deep cuts. Happiness is a Warm Gun is an especially strange song. The Breeders do a cover of it that I actually like a little better than the original. The fast version of Revolution is way better. Yer Blues is a pretty great blues tune with alot of soul. Lennon is really giving 100% on that one and I especially like the guitar work. They probably could have edited this a little more and got it down to one album but maybe their dissolving creative relationship just made it easier to throw everything in the pot.
There’s a lot to love on The White Album…Dear Prudence, Glass Onion, Ob-La-Di-Ob-La-Da, Happiness Is A Warm Gun, I’m So Tired, Blackbird, Martha My Dear, Piggies, Why Don’t We Do It In The Road? And that’s just the first disc, which is definitely better than the second (if only because Revolution 1 is the very weak album version compared to the rockin’ and FAR superior radio version, and Revolution 9 is one of the biggest wastes of time on an album ever, inspiring other bands to dump their most callous recordings on their albums in the name of “art”). Even in the lesser songs, you can at least hear the Beatles trying their best to reach a musical nirvana. I look at this album as I do any great double album…a vast garden of fruit to pick from. Some food is more beloved than others but at the end of the day, they all give some kind of proper nutrition and contribute to the whole.
It's been more than a year since we had a Beatles album in the project, so this was fun to wake up to today! I've never listened to this album, so a lot of these songs were new to me. It's quite a cornucopia of sound. If I didn't know they were on the verge on breaking up, maybe I wouldn't hear that in the music, but it does feel more like a compilation of individual projects and concepts, rather than a cohesive whole. Like they reached their peak, and this is the start of their descent down Beatle Mania Mountain. And did this really need to be a double? The fact they chose to include the 8:22 Revolution 9 is almost offensive. All that being said, there's a lot of great songs on here too. It's not on the same tier as Abbey Road or Sgt Pepper for me, but their individual talents still overflow in this, and their ability to make this work through the tension that was festering is pretty impressive.
Some amazing songs, will listen again
Some amazing songs and a big nostalgia factor, but the second half kinda fades a bit, losing it a star.
God album just not my favorite!
Hear me out - I've never been the biggest Beatles fan. I've always respected what they did for music, but have heard their songs too many times and have always liked, but not loved, most of what I've heard. I will say this double album has quite a lot of great songs, but it also has some filler (which could be forgiven since they were experimenting with new styles/sounds). It also had many of the over-played hits, which while great songs, I don't need to hear them yet again. If we were using a 10 point scale, I'd probably give the album a 7 or 8. Since we only use a 5 point scale, I'll go with a 4.
What does Tomek think?? 5 ⭐️??
charming
This was waaay better than the last Beatles album I heard. 4 Stars for this one.
Yah I was very much ready and expecting to give this album a 5 cause this album contains some of the greatest songs of their entire discography. And those songs truely are all time greats in just music in general. But I did not remember how unbelievably long this album is. There are some really grating tracks that take away from the experience as a whole. The Beatles were definitely one of the best bands at making solid front to back albums, and this is definitely that, but there are a bunch of duds hidden behind the massive stars. Seriously though, not my absolute favorite album by them but probably in the top 5.
Turn me on dead man!
Några onödiga låtar.
Number 9 Number 9 Number 9 Number 9 Number 9
Some of my favorite Beatles music on this one, however it does drag on a bit in places and some of the songs on here (looking at you number 9 number 9 number 9) can barely be categorized as music. I don’t know if it was worthy of inspiring a series of murders, but it was worth a listen.
I mean it’s the Beatles, so it’s excellent. But listening this time, you can tell things just aren’t the same. Each song is its own album. There doesn’t feel like there’s a cohesive feel throughout because everyone is sick of being together and wants to do their own thing. So each song is a chance to do your own thing. I saw something once that said something like each song is either Paul and the band or John and the band, but not everyone and everyone. And you can really tell.
I get it. The Beatles. Seminal rock. Starting to get into their experimental phase. So many of their famous hits. I'm sure it was very innovative in its day, and certainly culturally significant. My dad listened to so much Beatles while I was growing up it's kind of hard for me to hear it with fresh ears. Objectively as I can listen, it's a mixed bag for me. Rock has gone a lot of ways since this was the cutting edge. Some later rock bands are much more to my taste, but maybe they don't exist without the Beatles. I like some songs here way more than others, and there are definitely gems all over this album: While My Guitar, Blackbird, Glass Onion, Helter Skelter, Happiness Is a Warm Gun, Dear Prudence.
Controversial, groundbreaking, but certainly revolutionary... the Beatles' White Album. A cousin of mine considers it the best Beatles album. I've listened to them all. At the time, I wasn't ready for the revolution. These days, I give it a...
Des bangers absolus et des bruits de cochons.
Interesting album. I find a lot of Beatles albums lack cohesiveness or have big ups and downs as far as material goes and that is definitely the case here. On the other hand, it’s because they continually experimented with music and production in the studio. I’ll leave it up to you whether that makes for a good or bad album experience. Several hits on this one including Back in the USSR, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness is a Warm Gun, Blackbird, Birthday, Helter Skelter, Long Long Long, Revolution 1.
Rating: 4.2 I have a lot of thoughts about this one. 1. This is the coolest and most experimental/weird thing the biggest band on earth could have done at the time. Whoever takes over that title from Taylor Swift when she gets old and tired should take notes. 2. The first half of the album is almost impossible to criticize. Back in the USSR, Dear Prudence, Glass Onion, While My Guitar…, Happiness is a Warm Gun and Martha My Dear (and Blackbird, I’m So Tired is just okay) in such quick succession is one of the greatest runs of all time. I’m not even THAT opposed to the widely hated song (that I ignored on purpose) that’s in the middle of all that. 3. The second half has a ton of skips, and songs like Yer Blues and Revolution 1+9 are genuinely bad and unnecessary. The three best songs on this side (Helter Skelter, Savoy Truffle and Cry Baby Cry) are comfortably worse than all of the songs I named for the first half. 4. Out of all of the stuff they threw at the wall for this album, I would say more of it sticks as opposed to the minority that goopily slides down the wall. 5. Now for a little personal justification— is this album more influential than the two albums I’ve rated 5 stars thus far? Most likely. Does it have a better crop of songs? Debatably, if they were trimmed down. The only problem is I would not listen to this album front-to-back like I ecstatically would for some other Beatles albums. I’m not upset that they dumped everything they had onto this huge, edible but slightly shoe-leathery steak of an album, but there’s a perfectly cooked filet in there if they cut it a little differently. For reference if anyone actually reads this: the two albums I’ve rated 5 are Rumours by Fleetwood Mac and Funeral by Arcade Fire. And I’m only on day 50 something. Maybe my opinion of this album will improve or get worse based on all of their other work on this list I get to hear.
For a double album not too much self indulgence.
some wonderful songs but just way too long
Nostalgic classic.
ObLaDi is the banger on this Album or Dear Prudence. Solid Beatles Album which is growing to my favorite of them. Pauls Bass-lines are more experimental and more funky.
My first Beatles album! I liked it and all, but it was way too long.
Honestly this album is kind of a mixed bag. It has some classic hits on it that are good, and then some weird ones like piggies and rocky raccoon, which I still enjoyed.
Sounds stupid but I did not realize how experimental the Beatles were
Not my favourite of The Beatles albums but I do like the kookiness of The White Album. Good listen.
It's alright. I'll listen to it. People like it. I get it's ahead of it's time. Who am I to judge?
Can't go wrong with the Beatles. Blackbird is on this album.
I mean come on it’s the White Album. There’s 30 tracks on here and too many of them could be claimed by someone as their favorite Beatles’ song. The sheer variety of genres they explore on this is absolutely insane. I mean what kind of band at the height of their popularity put a musique concrète in a double album (Revolution 9)? Not only that, you’ve got George Harrison dropping bangers like “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”? Insane album. That said, there are songs that I’m less fond of like “Wild Honey Pie” and for that, it’s not my favorite Beatles record. If a 4.5 star is possible, that’d be my rank. Favorite songs: “While My Guitar Gently Weeps”, “Helter Skelter”, “Blackbird”, “Happiness is a Warm Gun”, “Julia”.
Onhan tämä klassikko mutta turhaan tupla. Saisi tästäkin tiivistää! 4/5
Erinomainen levyhän se tämäkin on, mutta tuplana vähän ylipitkä vitoseen asti pääsemiseen.
Great album with some shite songs
So I always had the assumption that The Beatles were too boy band and pop heavy for me. I’m pleased that this album proved just how wrong I was. Thoroughly enjoyed it and the wide range of songs. Love the freedom they had to be able to genre bend like they did.
Revolution 9 pulls this album down to a 4, as does the length
4.1
Great album with some legit bangers. Unfortunately the second half falls a little off the rails, but it is still a solid album.
Litt mange tullesanger. Bungalow Bill? Piggies? Allikevel en klassiker.
Ahead of their time for sure. Great stuff
More songs about birds and monkeys.
Not the best Beatles album that I’ve listened to, but was still great and had a lot of fun songs on it. Some of them I’ve heard them more as covers than the original Beatles cut, so this was cool to hear too
im so tired!! julia!! dear prudence!! sexy sadie!! while my guitar gently weeps!! blackbird!!
Timeless classic, the drums are so good. People remember the great Beatles songs but there are certainly some odd ones in there that have been forgotten by the wayside (the continuing story of bung????)
Dank
Album is definetly quite long. Also I liked drums by Ringo Starr he's so good. Here's some songs I like, some hard to like: Liked these songs: Back in the USSR Happiness is a warm gun Martha my dear Rocky Raccoon Don't pass me by Why don't we do it in the road? Mother Nature's son Sexy Sadie Helter Skelter Revolution 1 Honey Pie Revolution 9 Good Night Also I liked drums by Ringo Starr he's so good.
