my fav beatles album
wow
Beatles and Bob Dylan mania early in my journey! Full of classics, enjoyable deep cuts, fuck they were high as balls on LSD for some of this.
Many great songs and creative arrangements, but quite a lot of dumb stuff too.
What can I say? It's admittedly one of the greatest albums of all time. I cannot agree more
A critically acclaimed album for sure, full of white, but lacks direction, synchronicity, and is a tad long to be considered a perfect album.
Nice to see an album come up that you already know is packed with hits. Starts so strong, the whole 1st disc is hit after hit really. Disc 2 was less recognisable from the titles but pretty impressive to smash out 30 songs of such consistency. To be fair there are probably more recognised songs on disc 2 than on most albums that have come up on here. No song is the same to the next, so varied which I guess is because there are multiple great songwriters in the band with their own style. Other note Ob La Fuckin Di!
Simply a classic
Ah, the famous White Album. It has several great music tracks, ballad tracks and "My Guitar Gently Weeps". I didn't quite understand "Section 9", which sounded like the experience of half-waking from a lucid dream.
Love this album. Has a lot of my favorite songs on it. However, this album could have been trimmed down a bit. 4/5
Third Beatles album (fourth if you count All Things Must Pass by Harrison), and I'm pretty sure I've listened to this before, but am not recognizing some of the deeper cuts. Will say, being a double album, this one probably could have used some pruning. It's a weird dichotomy between some of the best work they ever did in their career (While My Guitar Gently Weeps is probably the best song of their career, along with other fantastic tracks like Back in the USSR, Ob-La-Di, Helter Skelter, and Revolution) with some really weird, nothing tracks (Wild Honey Pie, really?) and decent but not especially great tracks in the context of the Beatles (Rocky Raccoon). Definitely hearing them going heavy on the "proper" British Royalty sound they'd have from time to time with this record (Piggies), along with a slight American 50's diner-esque sound. Still, some great deeper cuts like Martha My Dear and Blackbird. The Beatles really have a knack for making weird, gimmick songs legit. Ob-La-Di, Martha My Dear, a lot of the great Ringo songs (not just on this record). This is definitely a McCartney/Harrison record where Lennon's contributions weren't quite as strong (aside from Revolution). But yeah. Great album, just inconsistent. Runs the gamut from greatest of all time to puzzling why specific songs were included. This would be a 5/5 if it were cut down to a single album about 60 mins instead of the 93 it actually is.
Mijn favoriet: Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da Eerste Beatles album. Ik kan hier stiekem toch veel naar luisteren. Wel veel liedjes voor een album, maar sommigen hebben ook grappige titels.
Like most Beatles album this has a lot of filler. If they distilled this down to 12-15 tracks it would be up there with any one of their best albums but it is so long and has so many songs that just aren't S tier Beatles songs. With that being said, there are some of the best Beatles songs on this album and, just like every other Beatles album, the top tier songs are so damn good they outshine the mediocre songs and make the album seem perfect. When these 4 lads hit the right notes and keys, their songs can me magical. I love The Beatles and this album, but I am not sure it deserves to be on this list. They have I believe 7 albums on this list, which seems far too many for any one group or artist, even The Beatles. And this album, while great, wasn't anything special, it was basically John and Paul following their tried and true formulas and refining their skills to a more mature and learned level than before. 8.8/10 124/1001
my least favorite beatles album, I think the track listing is too long, haphazardly arranged, and gives little thought to cohesiveness. that being said, it is *the fucking beatles* -- some of these songs are absolutely their greatest and most influential tracks ever (while my guitar..., happiness..., yer blues, helter skelter, yes even revolution 9!) and i would rather listen to my least favorite beatles album any day than some of the other wacky stuff on this list! (no hate... ok, a little hate, maybe).
4.5
This was an awesome album, but I felt like the whole thing could have been consolidated into a single LP. The filler makes a slight dent to this album's rating. They would fix this with Abbey Road. Other than that, a killer album that serves as a good baseline album to remind you of what good music can look at. The story behind the thing also provides context to why this album is as good as it is. Plus, Blackbird and Gently Weeps are enough to carry this album to infamy. 8/10
Great album. Listened to it before. Never have been quite as in love with the later-era Beatles, as some of the songs aren't quite my speed. However, I think it's a mix of higher highs and lower lows. Maybe it's worth it for those higher highs vs just being consistent throughout. 4/5
84/100. (The White Album) is a great record, filled with a lot of variety and some truly brilliant moments. With 30 tracks, it's natural that not every song will land the same, and there are a few that don’t do much for me. That said, the highlights are outstanding.
What a wild album lol. The absolute best and worst of the Beatles. The most Beatles Beatles album.
Classic beatless album, alot to sing and vibe too Not a bad listen first thing in the morning
Some decent songs on there but a lot of shit
Incredible range of song. Which I prefer to a double album full of similar songs. Highlights Dear Prudence and My Guitar Gently Weaps. Gets a little weak towards the end
It's a little wild to me that this is many Beatles-heads fav - although it is the one which my relationship to has changed the most over time - I like Side 1 less than my younger days and Side 2 quite a bit more - I think the six song run from Mother's Nature through Revolution 1 is more consistent than any on S1 and Long, Long, Long has been the sleeper of my Beatles life - together with Dear Prudence pushing for inclusion in a top 10. Anyway..my pared down album would be - S1 - keep a generous 11 of 17 S2 - keep 9 of 13 Probably still a double bit will have to check the revised running length...
Another of those popular beat combos. I’m sure they’ll never amount to anything 😁
Look, it's far from the best Beatles album, but if you mine hard enough you'll find some gold. "Why don't we do it in the road?" Is also one of my favourites. Especially with the comic strip if you see it ever...
very long but I liked Happiness is a Warm Gun
Love this album. Forgot how many actual bangers there are on here
This is their most expansive and experimental album The Beatles have ever created.
Lennon and McCartney turned the musical world in a direction we are still following. It elevated mainstream rock from “culture-caused” to “culture-causing”.
I mean, son los Beatles.
This album is all over the place and is better for it. I even listened to Revolution #9 in its entirety. Great stuff.
Oof. I didn't realize I wasn't a big fan of the White Album. Controversial, I'm sure, but I much prefer other Beatles albums.
i like ‘wild honey pie’ and i’m tired of pretending i don’t. apparently pattie boyd really pushed for it to be included on the album which makes me love and respect her even more than i already do. idk what i should say otherwise cos everything’s already been said. too many songs, yes, and a couple of really SHITE tracks (’goodnight’) but there are actually fewer true stinkers than i always remember. it could have been 3 sides instead of 4 i guess. and the good songs are just stone cold classics. fav tracks: dear prudence; while my guitar gently weeps; happiness is a warm gun; mother nature’s son; back in the USSR; i’m so tired; yer blues; glass onion; long long long; savoy truffle; cry baby cry; helter skelter; julia
PRETTY FUCKING SICK
My Beatles knowledge is patchy to be honest having grown up mainly listening to the Red and Blue compilations. It's more recently that I'm working my way back through albums and, as a double, this is literally a big one to get your teeth into! But I've been taking big bites of it of late and, whilst like many doubles, it can be a bit patchy and overly long, there's a hell of a lot of quality on it and it contains a number the great Beatles songs, including.....
I mean... it's The White Album. 4/5
As John was probably thinking at the time, lose the Paul filler tracks, okay so we’ll give him Helter Skelter, drop a couple of George’s and save Revolution 9 for a John and Yoko release. Then you’d have a 5-star, non-double album.
A classic. Lots of stand-outs, but not my favorite Beatles album. There are too many skippable songs that the record comes across as bloated rather than dense and rich. The more experimental work in the back half of disc 2 is really fun to listen through, though!
Okay, it's a pretty good band. Probably exceptional in the 60s, now it sounds bit outdated. Certain songs are overplayed, some are definitely underrated, but it's clear that all four members are great songwriters. Otherwise, just a long album filled with very old pop hits.
After revolutionising pop music from 1963-67, the cracks start to show. There is no real innovation. There's Revolution 9 but that’s not a song. There are lots of novelty songs. Lots of messing around. A lot of mediocre Paul songs that needed John’s input but he couldn’t be arsed. « I’m so tired » is one of the better songs. It sums up the mood of much of the album. But there are still some songs that make you smile, feel genuinely sad, or smile. About a single album’s worth. A lot of people say this is their favourite Beatles album but it is not mine. 3.75. So round up to 4
What can I say? It's the Beatles.
Gave it a listen, pretty good. Heard a lot of familiar songs in it.
Quite a lot of filler on here, but also some absolute bangers and classics, most of the music holds up well. Although songs like revolution 9 are... unnecessary.
It's kind of amazing that the Beatles could put out a 30-track album in the midst of releasing so many other songs, and that the album wouldn't really contain any bad songs. There are some that aren't all that good, but mostly the worst tracks are still OK. Interestingly, there's also not really any stand out "great" tracks on the record either. It is pretty much just a steady stream of good songs, though it does end on a couple weak notes. Regardless of your opinion on the Beatles, it's undeniable that they were prolific songwriters. They were able to cover a huge range of stylistic ground in writing the songs as well. There's some hard rock, folk, blues, pop, psychedelia, swing, and more on this album. The diversity kept things interesting over the hour-thirty-plus runtime. The album's main weakness to me is that it is so long. While no song is particularly bad, there are some diversions that really didn't add much to the listening experience. If they weren't Beatles songs, I have to think they would've been regarded much differently, or not at all. Remove four or five of the "meh" tracks from this album and I think it becomes better than it is already. Even just cutting off the last two tracks (the soundscape Revolution 9 and orchestral Good Night) would've solidified the record for me. At the very least, cutting some out would make it easier to appreciate the stronger tracks. As it stands, I think it is one of the most consistently good albums I've had on here. That said, it never really goes beyond simply being good to me. I had this in the low 4s before the last two tracks but they dropped it down a tad. Overall: 3.9/5
bloated? absolutely. has some complete stinkers? oh for sure. has some of the stupidest, most experimental, and weirdest songs released under their name? yes, and that's awesome. god bless this mess. everyone agrees that this is inconsistent, but there's little agreement on what the peaks and nadirs are. that's cool! Revolution 9 is one of the peaks btw. deserves to be one of the 1001? fuck i mean there are 7 Beatles albums on here and that seems like a bit much. not *too* much, but you could cut it down to 4 or 5, which I think is the most any artist deserves. shit though, cutting this album would feel Wrong. cutting most would feel wrong. I would make my top 4 one of the early ones, Revolver, Sgt Peppers, and Abbey Road. but that leaves both this and Rubber Soul off... i mean i guess Revolver is less important than Rubber Soul to understanding the band but it's also my favorite. hmmmm. this album could be left off and i would understand it but i would have trouble cutting it if i were making the list. or not. they're The Beatles, they can have 6 albums, fuck it.
Hard to beat this
The White Album isn’t my favorite, but it’s still iconic. It’s always a pleasure to listen to start to finish, which I don’t do often enough. Sure, there are some oddities on it, but that’s what makes it The White Album.
Rv/g
First time I listened to Revolution 9 all the way through. Never again. We're they making fun of different genres of music? I'd never thought that before. Enjoyable but I prefer Sgt. Pepper's.
random animal theme that i hadn’t noticed before. revolution 9 is super disconcerting. Overall really good album- favs- "For No One", "Yellow Submarine" and "Here, There, And Everywhere".
Weirder than I remembered.
Classic
I've owned a copy of this since high school, but it's been a while since I last sat through the entire thing. The first disc is perfect, not a single bad song on it. The second disc is more of a mixed bag. There are some really great songs in there, but there's also a handful that are just okay. And "Revolution 9" is an interesting experiment, but a chore to listen to more than once. It drags on for so long it kills the momentum. Luckily there's only one song left after it, but still. The good mostly outweighs the bad, but I can't give it full marks.
I'm thankful for this list showing me that I actually like the Beatles a fair amount. I was kind of indifferent beforehand, didn't hate them, appreciated their influence but I wouldn't have said I was a fan. I didn't realise how weird they could get until I'd heard the albums on this list Some really nice stuff like While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Blackbird, the sort of stuff I think of when I think of The Beatles. Back In The USSR is a fun rocker. I love Helter Skelter, just dirty and noisy proto-metal I think it's pretty obvious that tensions were high during the recording, as the songs really feel like they're by each individual member. It also feels like a weird compilation of odds and ends so the flow is a bit strange There are a few duds that let it down for me, and the way the album ends is a bit limp. The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill and Rocky Raccoon are just weird little oddities that I don't really enjoy (the former is particularly repetitive and annoying). Revolution 9 is mostly nonsense and completely out of place and I'm not keen on Good Night, it's like some traditional pop or some film score. It feels weirdly out of place too A very good album containing some of my favourite Beatles songs Highlights: Helter Skelter, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, Back In The USSR, Glass Onion
Heel chill. Het paste de warme weer
Classic album! A few duds that brought the rating to a 4, shorten the album, it's a NO BRAINER to be 5 stars!
Not the best Beatles but definitely had some of their strongest deep cuts
I love this album, but it really suffers from the Use Your Illusion syndrome of "You know this would be awesome if you'd exercised a little bit of self-control and kept it to a tight 12 tracks, right?" The madness is kind of what makes it great in both cases, though.
While I know a bunch of these, I guess I've never listened to the whole album. There's some weird shit on here. I think a third of the album could be cut for a better listening experience. At least for me. Knowing that Back in the USSR is a response to the Beach Boys makes me appreciate it more. Dear Prudence, Blackbird, and While My Guitar Gently Weeps are just fantastic on every level (but we already knew that). I can do without Wild Honey Pie or The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill - especially the legit terrible girlfriend screeching ('cause I can't call that singing).
I liked all the Beatles albums I've gotten on this list so far, but I was still waiting for that wow factor that helped me fully understand how they got so big. I think it finally clicked for me with this album. I love how experimental the Beatles got on this one, it's the perfect showcase of the entire group's talent.
Great album, this challenge has definitely helped me appreciate the beatles more
ighttt Rachel I get it
beetled)
liked it! I hadn't heard some of them before, glass onion and savoy truffle, and liked those. HATED revolution 9 tho. yoinks
So many great songs on here! Some of my favorite Beatles songs are present; “revolution 9” (sans all of the trip fest), “blackbird”, “while my guitar gently weeps” to name a few. But the real magic lies with the playful tunes that shirk expectations. Song like “why don’t we do it in the road”, “rocky raccoon” and even “wild honey pie” excite me the most. For an album to get a 5, I have to like every song - or at least stay involved for all of them. This album, with so many songs, struggles to clear that hurdle. But it’s a solid 4.
finally the beatles i’ve been hearing about for years!! this was actually good, weird, cool, and interesting in the ways that everyone claims the beatles to be. i didn’t ‘like’ a single song but it all worked pretty well as a big work, while definitely being on the longer end. i still don’t understand the overwhelming love for these guys but this was much better than abbey road and revolver
Beat, 1968 -> 4
One thing I like about the Beatles is that almost all songs have a Wikipedia page with a lot of stuff to read about. Another thing i like is that their albums are usually pretty short, so I was a bit annoyed with this one. The first disc was a lot better than the second one. Right now this is around 3rd place on my list (Revolver, Abbey Road, White Album, Rubber Soul, Hard Days Night).
The Beatles followed up the monumental critical and cultural success they enjoyed with Sergeant Peppers with easily their lengthiest and most challenging work. A huge part of The White Album’s appeal comes from its sheer variety. It’s got the hits but it also sees them taking on unexpected and even sinister new modes that have you question who this band are. To pick a song out (and feel I have to zone in on particular tracks because there’s 30 of them) Helter Skelter is one of The Beatles most exciting and surprising songs. It creates a phenomenal vision of a completely different band, perhaps even paving the way for Heavy Metal bands of the 1970s. They are saying “we could be this band if we wanted to be, and we’d be amazing at it.” And they’re right. How unbearable or enjoyable you find Revolution 9 is completely down to how prepared you are to hear songwriting icons, The Beatles, step away from music and instead create sound art. For me it’s an interesting enough idea to happily spend 8 minutes on. As a one off it’s pretty damn interesting, especially given how it transitions into the crooning old fashioned brilliance of Good Night, which has to be one of the all time most affecting transitions between songs. Good Night is another example of “we could be this band if we wanted to be...” If I was to pick one hit to discuss it would be While My Guitar Gently Weeps, which is in my opinion The Beatles’ best song. Across a discography dominated by John and Paul, George manages to best them with his rawest and most emotional outpouring. It’s a pop song but it’s also tough, twisted and mean. The guitar solo is as gut wrenching as it is beautiful to listen to. So why is this an 8/10 for me and not, as most would have it, an out and out classic? Simply put, I think it could do with a bit of a trim. I’d keep the big singles of course, and welcome all the bizarre outliers, but I’d cut out songs like the Honey Pies and Bungalow Bill which neither push the band into new territory, nor are particularly exciting examples of their craft. 90 minutes has to be well a truly earned and for me cuttable songs on such a long LP is a bit of a sin. Though I appreciate there will be people for whom their enjoyment of the band truly hinges on Wild Honey Pie and The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill. Mine does not, so for me this The White Album sits in the category of flawed epic.
3-4
Some weird shit on this one, but it has all my favourite Beatles songs so I'm biased.
This album has many of my favourite tracks that the Beatles have made. This project also has a couple of experimental tracks. I think the most interesting track here is Revolution 9, which I liked because it made me feel scared and vulnerable, rather than how it sounded. Favourite Track(s): Blackbird, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Rocky Raccoon, Mother Nature's Son Least Favourite Track(s): Piggies
i am a hardcore beatles hater but unfortunately this really does slap
Yoko Ono SUCKS
6/10, solid but i dont fw the beatles that much
3.9/what a behemoth of an album
4.5
4/5 the later 60s Beatles are great (this one included) but this album isn't non stop bangers like some other albums are (i.e. Abbey Road, Sgt. Pepper's)
So many hits. As with most of their albums for me. This one has just a few too many that shouldn’t have been included.
Definitely some bangers and some other songs I'm less excited about. This probably could have just been two separate albums, but it's still quite memorable. The ones that hit really do stick to you. And I'm glad it ended with a Ringo song.
Høyrer jo ein del på denne til vanleg pga er velsigna med eit Beatlesbarn. Har låter eg er meir glad i enn andre, men det er jo svære greier.
It’s their biggest. It’s their mostest. But it’s not their bestest. Lotta filler and eh.
Good
"half of what I say is meaningless"-sums up the Beatles lyrics well. They are entertaining though. Melodies are varied and you can really hear how heavily they have influenced other bands. The highs on this album are high, but the double album is overlong.
8.5/10
It’s the Beatles, I love the Beatles. Yet, this album is pretty bipolar imo. Like it has some of their best songs like “my guitar gently weeps”; some of their most important for music, like “helter-skelter” which was like one of if not the first hard rock songs, and my favs of Beatles like “happiness is a warm gun. Yet, some bad ones too. Like Yoko, and some just forgettable ones. Still, really good
duh duh duh disc 1 is fire. they start to lose me on disc 2. overall good. my boyfriends claims they’re so basic and general but i really don’t care what he thinks about them. i know what i like.
It's the beatles so of course it's good but the version on spotify was far too long. Also the 8 minute long song was interesting but I wouldn't say it's good
This album has some incredible songs and some absolute garbage - 5 stars for the boys and -1 for Yoko
Surprisingly good wtf?
the space between sgt pepper and abbey road that they filled out with basically whatever they felt like maybe underwhelming relative to the rest of the beatles' significant works from the second half of the 60s, but its still the beatles and it is good
How have I never listened to this album in it's entirety before? I've heard some of the songs individually but never as a collective work. There were a couple of songs that I did not love, but it is a real work of art. I'm also shocked by how many songs are on the album! A true classic.
Good variety of sound
Great album. Barely feels like a Beatles album, which is both its strength and its weakness.
started out really strong but not as good as i was expecting
What a classic... just wish it was one album instead of 2, quite a few fillers, Revolution #9 is certainly an experience
Definitely an experience. A very eclectic mix of sounds and ideas all thrown into one anthology. Definitely a good one to throw on to mix things up.
Truly a classic
I have always loved this album so had a big smile on my face when I saw it come up today! Weird to listen to it on headphones though with the v. weird old school mix designed for mono speakers.
they're getting self-indulgent by this point - whimsical, all over the place, lots of traditional influences. Less compelling than some of their other albums but still interesting
USSR, guitar gently weeps
some real hits, some misses. Absolutely a solid album and one of the all time greats for a reason. Each song in a different style while keeping entirely true to that style.
Not bad, not my style though. I can seehow influential it was. Never really listened to the beatles but they have a lot more energy in this album than i thought. 7/10 in my personal opinion
So many classics.
a mixed bag and pretty damn long, but when it’s good, it’s really good. classic
Good
A few filler-esque tracks here and there but otherwise still a great album
Pretty nice album, it was great having it in the background, I think that they were super popular at this time, so they were going all in on just whatever music they wanted. There were a couple of popular songs, there were some that were a bit meh but overall good stuff.
Has a lot of interesting bits, especially for its time. However, it's also waaaay too long.
I absolutely love The Beatles! My parents, specifically my dad, is a big fan so I grew up with a lot of their songs on repeat in my childhood homes. That said, I know a ton of the hits from this record and many more. I'm more intimately familiar with the Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour records in their totality - so I'm hoping this dive into the white album will yield a better appreciation for some of the deeper cuts. One thing that strikes me about this record is that it's production is stellar. For some reason good production on an album that came out in 1968 seems unheard of for me. I also appreciate that this album seems a little more paired back than the concept records like Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour. It was almost as if the amount of drugs these guys were doing was still there but it just feels like their sound matured? One of the things that strikes me about this record too is George Harrison's guitar work - the songs "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey" and "Helter Skelter" just have some really jammy sounding guitar work that is extremely pleasing to listen to. One of my only criticisms of this record is that I feel like there's probably 6 - 8 songs you could reliably cut out and this would still be an extremely solid release. This was a really fun album to return to and still shows me the reasons why The Beatles are still highly celebrated 57 years later. Standout tracks for me on this one (with the caveat that I didn't already know well them coming in) - "Dear Prudence", "Why Don't We Do it in the Road?", "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey", and "Revolution 1".
docked a star for a certain song
A little bloated but still so many great songs. Sort of a transition point between Magical Mystery Tour and Abbey Road which are both incredible albums
I never was fun of the Beatles, but totally acknowledged their immeasurable impact on the pop-music and music in general. My favorite version of Beatles is in the musical 'Across the Universe', which even more pointing that I'm definitely not a fun :) However, the album is great and I enjoyed listening to it!
Some classics on this album. It's long though. Dare I say, too long?
Got two Beatles albums in a row!. I think I like this one more than Rubber Soul. "Dear Prudence" and "While my guitar..." are the highlights for me. Helter Skelter is almost a metal song before metal existed and I love the Avant Garde approach for "Revolution 9". Weird and fascinating. And I found hilarious the parody gag by the Simpson where Barney is recording his own "Revolution" song lol. It's a long album and I still have to digest all the songs. I've never been a Beatles fan but this one is a keeper.
Look, this was my first time listening to this album, and I was fully enjoying it, thinking to myself, “Maybe I *do* like the Beatles!” and then that god-awful “why don’t we do it in the road” song came on and shattered everything and how the actual fuck was that song allowed to live?
Nostalgic it reminds me of old times
I'm currently playing the game with my son who's just discovered it, "what great single album is in the white album" and the usual suspects have been ejected -Honey Pie, Savoy Truffle etc. But its testimony to their magpie like nature and breadth of interests that it actually hangs together as a double album, with the filler as it were providing an interesting counterpoint to the killer. And killer it is with some.of their best stuff on here. Fully turbo charged by the changes in technology and Outlook. I also think that in many ways this album wears its influences to The Goons much more in evidence here- piggies, ob la di, , me and my monkey. Still a 4 though
A little more folky in places than I would hope but who can ever be upset while listening to The Beatles? Also, they are such straight laced guys that I can believe that people didn't care about the subject matter of "doing it in the road" or "my finger on her trigger" lol. Like they somehow don't come off as super dirty and yet they are really dirty? Paradoxical, and yet it works! Really did NOT care for Revolution 9
Some good tunes, found it all fairly enjoyable. Far too long for top marks though, multi-disc albums should be banned from this! Decent album cover as well.
85% Best: Back in the U.S.S.R.; Dear Prudence; While My Guitar Gently Weeps; Happiness Is a Warm Gun; Blackbird; Don't Pass Me By; Yer Blues; Helter Skelter; Revolution 1 Must-Hear? Sure
Couple really good songs off the album. Although I think there were a more just ok filler songs.
307/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑
just a little too much for a 5 could i write poetry to this? y
Half of it is some of the best music ever written. The other half is some of the most self-indulgent and pointless music ever set to vinyl. Extra star for all of the "Paul is dead" clues sprinkled around this album.
Disc 1 would be an automatic 5
There are some great tracks on here, of course it’s the Beatles, but quite a bit of filler. You could get it down to 3 sides maybe even 2 if you were ruthless but still pretty damn good!
already heard
Prima prova, sembra iniziare bene come viaggio.
Enjoyed it. But it was a bit long.
I think this lands squarely in the top 5 Beatles albums, but it's no Hey Jude. Definitely great with a lot of variety, including Blackbird, one of my favorites. I absolutely detest the final cacophonic track (Revolution 9 - dang it Yoko Ono, ugh), which knocks this album squarely out of the top 3 list.
Not a huge Beatles fan, but this was the best of their albums we’ve had so far.
Zu den bekanntesten und herausragendsten Songs zählen „Back in the U.S.S.R.“, „While My Guitar Gently Weeps“, „Blackbird“ und „Helter Skelter“. Besonders bemerkenswert ist auch der psychedelische Einfluss, der die Songs wie „The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill“ prägt.
Classic Beatles Album,
The greatest rarities and b-sides album of all time. I’ve always thought this album was a little overrated because of how random the song selection is (and how long it is) but listening through it yesterday there are so many great songs. I can’t rate every Beatles album a 5 so I’ll stick at a 4 but to quote Mits-92.5, who am I to critique the Beatles?
This is my second favorite Beatles album. Super long and not every song is a banger, but some of my favorite Beatles songs are on this one.
Was not expecting the first album to be one I know already. The Beatles are literally my favourite band at the moment so this was a nice surprise. Not my favourite by them but still a great double album full of everything.
They try a lot of different this and because of that the album seems like a mixed bad, but there are more songs here I enjoyed than the ones I didn’t.
Extremely varied and long. Tonally and musically all over the place, you have no idea what the next track is going to sound like, but I like that about it, bursting with ideas and creativity.
How can I possibly review the White Album? It's got a bunch of good songs. It's got a bunch of songs I'd happily never listen to again. Tim says "It's manifestly a 5." If I could make one album by choosing the best songs, I would agree.
Yeah took Beatles to another level!
Ætla að gefa þessari fjarka. Því fimmur eru fimmur. Frábær plata en hefði mátt skera fituna…
Mjög erfið plata að dæma. Mjög mikið af lögum, sum frábær en önnur sem hefðu mátt missa sín. Blackbird, While my guitar og Julia algjörar perlur. Alls konar stílar og margt mjög framsækið. Helter Skelter og Happiness is a warm gun. Svo er ótrúlegt að þeir hafi sett Revolution 9 á plötu.
Ob la di ob la fucking di to quote John Lennon during his scheduled takeover of the beatles. Had to skip Revolution 9 and also hated the original Honey Pie. The rest were all bangers. Personal faves are helter skelter, while my guitar gently weeps and back in the ussr.
It's not the best Beatles but it's the Beatles
It'd been a long time since I'd properly listened to this album in full. Whilst there are some really great, even iconic songs on here, I do think it's a little let down by being a bit overlong and with a few too many tracks that just don't hit. I admire it's ambition, but probably one of the more inconsistent Beatles records (especially from this period of their career)
4.5
point1.
Amazing album, but there is a lot of fluff thrown in. 4/5
Easily a 5 star record here if trimmed.
Undeniably great but there are enough duff tracks to detract from my enjoyment of the whole thing as an album
A bit overstuffed, but a shocking achievement given its scope and scale. This exercise continues to highlight how good the Beatles really are. They hold up! “Long, Long, Long” stood out on this listen as a song I’d never really appreciated before but found really excellent and beautiful this time through.
Þessi plata inniheldur mörg af mínum uppáhalds Bítlalögum og hún hefði flogið upp í fimm stjörnur ef ekki hefði verið fyrir djammsessionið í lokin á B-hliðinni. Það drap svolítið stemmninguna sem byggist upp
Pretty okay album, I wouldn't say it was the Beatles' best but contains their best song so its not too bad. This is the Beatles stripped back to basics but tbh I prefer their more progressive/psychedelic stuff, at times it can sound underdeveloped and too simple but LP 2 is a stark improvement with a needed injection from the electric guitar. However the album does also provide a track I refuse to ever listen to again in Revolution 9 with it being like if 'Fitter Happier' was 8 minutes long. Not sure how its Leo's favourite, has he listened to Sgt peppers or Abbey Road? 7.5/10 Not too bad. Thursday 6th of February 2025. Top tracks -> While My Guitar Gently Weeps -> I Will -> Birthday -> Revolution 1
Very weird 4/5
I never got into the whole 'White Album' is perfection bit. I'm not a huge fan of some of the lyrics and songs on this album but in listening to this album, listen to the fun these guys are having in the background, not since the 'Get Back' sessions where you see the creative process at work do you get to witness the lads enjoying themselves rather than feeling enslaved to the recording process. 4/5
The White Album has lots of good songs but its sheer sice of songs makes it all bit messy. Surely this Beatles album is better than so much other stuff by other artists but not as great as their masterpieces.
Not as good as "best of the beatles" but it's OK.
I go back and forth with this one. It was my favorite Beatles record for a long time - well, the first LP was. As I’ve grown older and more anti-McCartney I’ve liked it less. There are some great tunes on this - but it is over bloated with throwaway tunes. Once you get to the second LP it becomes a true slog. This is despite truly standout songs like Savoy Truffle and Sexy Sadie. On a whole this is a nostalgic four stars - should probably be a three if not for the memories.
Good, but not my favourite Beatles. (10 known/14 new)
Enjoyed that.
I mean it’s the Beatles.
How dare John Lennon criticize "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" when he wrote the trash that is "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill." One star automatically deducted for that one.
Solid album.
The genre isn't my cup of tea but I still found it a pretty good listen.
Full Disclosure: I am a Beatles fan, through and through. Interestingly enough, as a Gen Xer, I didn't discover them until my 30s. Didn't fall in love until my 40s. Not that I avoided. I just...thought they were oldies. Until I didn't. This eponymous white album is one I didn't particularly prefer for years. I would have said it's my least favorite post-touring-Beatles album. Well, I'm really glad I got this album today. Yes, of course there are plenty of songs on here that sound like, and likely are, demos. Lot's of joking around. Studio noise. It's messy. Some might say bloated, but I think everyone...well, John and Paul and then, to the extent they allowed, George...was differentiating and creating their own music. I think Ringo really starts to swing here. Like, I think he and Paul, across the final two albums (which really are a de facto double album, Abbey Road and Let It Be) vaulted into the conversation of greatest rhythm sections in the history of such things. Anyway, I'm rambling and actually not doing any fact checking, lol. Let me say that I love this 90 minute, 30 song, overstuffed double album that is absolutely all over the place and yet still somehow pristinely sequenced. (It's probably still my least favorite album from Rubber Soul onwards, though. But, like, all of those albums are clustered near each other with solid A grades, at least. And technically I'd give this 4.5 stars, which is 9/10.)
Apostasy, maybe: Tommy Jones's joke in "Men in Black" about having to buy The White Album again when a new gadget replaces CDs, this is my least favorite latter-stage Beatles record. It has one sublime song ("Blackbird"), and a number of good to great tunes (e.g., "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"), but a lot of it is, frankly, self-indulgent. Sorry, fanboys.
I really love rocky raccoon.
Some good songs, some not so good songs 4/5
Poor, poor Beatles. You fell into the same trap that so many other bands have found themselves in. You though, "We've got enough material for two albums, so let's just record a double album!" Unfortunately, just like nearly every other band that tried it, you did not have enough material for two good albums, at least according to the standard you set for yourselves. If you took out the filler, this album would be fucking amazing, certainly in competition for the best Beatles album. Instead, I wouldn't put it in the top 5, despite having some of my favorite Beatles songs. 4/5 What hath man wrought?
While this album is still top tier Beatles material, it feels a bit cobbled together and bloated. Definitely not as cohesive as Abby Road or Sgt. Pepper's. If this had been trimmed down from a double LP, it would have done us all a favor by giving us a good 35 minutes back in our day. With that being said, it still has some incredible tracks (Dear Prudence, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, Rocky Raccoon, Helter Skelter, and Good Night) and it shows the brilliance these guys had, even when they really didn't want to work with each other, but chose to anyway.
Another fine Beatles album that gets a little long in the tooth after a while. This is good, but not Abbey Road good.
Let me start this off by saying that I love the Beatles, my parents bought me up on them but this unfortunately is not my favourite Beatles album cause it seems to me like it’s a solo Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr album, all trying to out experiment each other like they were all doing their own thing with little collaboration. Is it controversial to say this could have been a single album and not a double? There are some brilliant tracks on here but also some that I feel just fill out the 2 discs.
A top listen, but I had to skip revolution 9.
Hard to know what to think. It's THE White Album. And the tunes are nearly all good. The beginnings of heavy shit are right there in Helter Skelter, and Revolution 9 is a fucking Experience. But somehow the structure of this album just feels like... there isn't one. We're the Beatles, throw everything we wrote down in a list and publish it. Maybe I just need more listens, but some spots were a chore that I don't fancy doing again. Still, can't take much away from the achievement that it is
The sheer number of songs on this album makes it a long listen, but most Beatles songs are under the 3 minute mark. The album is a bit of a hodge podge thematically. They should've given George and Ringo more writing opportunities, some of the best songs on this album were written by them, and some of the worst by Lennon-McCartney (apart from the most famous singles). The stories about the making of this album is fantastic, stories about Rishikesh and the eventual dissolution of the band. All in all, a very good album.
Didn’t realize that I was listening to a remastered edition until part way through the first song. Couldn’t say what was different but I just knew it sounded a little less familiar. Great album but it does feel a bit bloated in parts. Some songs are very forgettable.
Random, enjoyable and different.
One of the best albums of all time, but too much filler 😢.
Great album, Some absolute corkers in this one, some pretty spoony ones also
This is just amazing! And also weird and strange - I love it. And always have. Even though it is not the best Beatles album, it was and is still such an amazing tour through song/music display for others to learn from
a very long album that only became a little boring in the last 20 mins or so.. enjoyed the album overall and the diverse mix of sounds and genres 8 out of 10
Can't believe it's taken me this long to listen in full, there's amazing non single songs on here
Strange one this. Some tracks are absolute brilliance such as While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Helter Skelter. Others are comparatively low-key but beautiful such as another Nature’s Son and Long, Long, Long. There’s honestly many strong tracks on here. I even really enjoyed Revolution 9. There aren’t many pop bands that would release an album that moves between blues, folk, proto-metal and musique concrète. It’s genuinely impressive how cohesive it all feels. My only complaints would be that a few very short, basic tracks that do feel like filler, and there maybe one or two too many novelty songs. Some of the wackier songs are definitely worth their inclusion however as it wouldn’t be The Beatles without them. It’s more that it just adds to an already long runtime. All said though, The White Album is a huge achievement. Given the amount of tension within the band at the time, it’s a testament to their incredible creativity and talent as musicians that such a sweeping collection of music was produced.
If listening to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club band is like looking through a kaleidoscope and seeing all sorts of psychedelic patterns and shapes, then listening to the White Album is like looking through a kaleidoscope and seeing patterns consisting of inner-fighting and clashing views, a mishmash of genres from standard rock & roll to proto-heavy metal to a sound collage, and the number nine. The White Album is a rather interesting album. With most of the songs written while the band were at a Transcendental Meditation training course in Rishikesh, India and recorded as arguments and differences broke out among the four that would eventually lead to their break-up, this album is pretty much where the Beatles peaked creatively, with lyrics that are satirical ("Back in the U.S.S.R.", "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill"), political ("Blackbird", "Revolution 1"), and informed by the trip to India and this album's troubled recording ("Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey", "Sexy Sadie"). And while you have your typical Beatles pop rock, there's plenty of songs that are different genres, whether that'd be blues rock ("While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "I'm So Tired"), "Paul's granny music", as John Lennon described "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da", proto-heavy metal ("Helter Skelter") or a sound collage consisting of the number nine ("Revolution 9") that is definitely the Beatles at their most experimental and avant-garde and probably would have never been made had John never met and fell in love with Yoko Ono. At the same time, though, you can tell how kinda messy this album is, and that prevents me from seeing this as their masterpiece. Division between the four Beatles led to a fragmented recording session where the band rarely recorded together and instead worked separately. Thus, the mishmash of genres with each song, and you can tell that each Beatle were developing different ideas on how to craft a song, whether it'd be George Harrison's guitar-driven approach or Paul's inspiration by old-hat jazz that he grew up with (again, "Paul's granny music"), and when a filler song like "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" strikes, that's when you can tell that songs like those were recorded when they were starting to run out of ideas. While this album is good, it unfortunately marks the beginning of the end of the Beatles. Favorite Tracks: "Back in the U.S.S.R.", "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "Happiness is a Warm Gun", "Blackbird", "Sexy Sadie", "Helter Skelter" Least Favorite Track: "Wild Honey Pie"
The White Album by The Beatles is a brilliant record, and at times close to perfect, even if it does feel a little too long. There’s an argument that if this had been trimmed down to a tight 11 or 12 tracks, it could be their very best album. As it stands, it’s more of a sprawling collection of ideas, but what a collection it is. The range on display is incredible, jumping from rock and blues to folk and experimentation, and showing just how versatile the band had become. At its best, it’s outstanding. Songs like Glass Onion, Blackbird, and While My Guitar Gently Weeps highlight the individual strengths of each member and just how strong they were creatively at this point. Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da has always been a bit of a hidden favourite for me, and Back in the U.S.S.R. is a brilliant, high-energy opener that sets the tone. There are moments where it drifts and feels indulgent, which is where the length becomes an issue, but the highs are so good that it hardly matters overall. Favourite tracks: Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da and Back in the U.S.S.R. Least favourite tracks: Revolution 9, Mother Nature’s Son, and Cry Baby Cry feel unnecessary Album artwork: Classic, simple, and instantly recognisable
Classic album of course! For my taste some fillers on it too…Could have been an all-time favourite 12 song album for me! Absolutely loved Revolution 9, especially with headphones on!
B+ Back In the U.S.S.R. 5 Dear Prudence 4 Glass Onion 3 Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da 3 Wild Honey Pie 3 The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill 4 While My Guitar Gently Weeps 5 Happiness Is a Warm Gun 4 Martha My Dear 5 I’m So Tired 5 Blackbird 4 Piggies 3 Rocky Raccoon 5 Don’t Pass Me By 3 Why Don’t We Do It In the Road? 3 I Will 3 Julia 5 Birthday 3 Yer Blues 3 Mother Nature's Son 4 Everybody's Got Something to Hid Except Me and My Monkey 3 Sexy Sadie 4 Helter Skelter 4 Long, Long , Long 3 Revolution 1 3 Honey Pie 4 Savoy Truffle 3 Cry Baby Cry 3 Revolution 9 2 Good Night 4 I was very curious how this rating would shake out. And honestly, I think it's very fitting on the cusp of a four. It's so up and down and individual. There's no flow whatsoever. But so many great songs. What an amazing album.
I think a lot of the time, people misinterpret the word overrated to mean outright bad. This is often not the case and I can think of no better band than the Beatles to exemplify this. This album is great. It's foray into psych rock is my favorite thing about it. Even the poppier tunes like Back in the U.S.S.R., Obladi oblada and Birthday are fun as hell. However, it's almost impossible to separate the music from the massive ego trips nearly every member of this band is on. The result is an album that's almost as fun to talk about as it is to listen to. Likely my favorite from the Beatles discography.
i have a hard time getting into the beatles but this album has the best songs of all the ones i have heard
Lots of genres which was fun. Beatles doing Beatles things
Once again, back to the Beatles. There is some incredible work on this album but also baffling choices that make me feel like I'm losing my grip on reality. This is a 5-star album living in a duplex home with a 2-star album - a common curse of these double albums. It's insane to me that the Beatles chose to place one of the most beautiful and poetic songs of the decade ("Blackbird") here next to "oink oink piggies." Then I guess we should thank this album for - as improbable as it sounds - inspiring the Marvel character Rocket Raccoon. The low point of the White Album is probably "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" I think sides 1 and 2 are pretty solid overall, with only a couple of real clunkers (the offenders mentioned above). I even like "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da." The quality seems to dip on the other disc though, with a lot more songs on sides 3 and 4 that I marked as neutral or "thumbs down." I do like "Birthday" and "Revolution 1." I don't dislike the experimental "Revolution 9" near the end - it's a cool and enjoyable experimental piece - but it feels incongruous with the rest of the White Album.
I’m sure I’m in the minority, but I’d not heard this album in its entirety, only the more popular tracks were the ones I’m familiar with. I have never been a huge fan of The Beatles, even though they’re undeniably the greatest rock band of all time. 4 out of 5 for me, but I’ll take The Rolling Stones over The Beatles every time.
Great album interesting to read about all of the differences in there.
Eclectic noodling from the 4 lads which is rather Fab…..
The Beatles are considered the best pop/ rock band in history. Probably the main reason for this is because they ARE! This is likely because they can put out albums like this with 30 songs and not one of them sounds the same as any other. Moods, melodies, emotions, totally different and all... amazing? How they managed to accomplish what they did is rather more surreal than sensible, but here we are. Very much because of their impossible range and just plain perfection in what they do, I can not really think of any band more deserving the best band in history title. I love to be a dragon slayer, but who can replace them at the top?
7.76
This isn’t one of my favorites ever but I know that if I was there when this dropped it would’ve blown my mind. Helter Skelter is awesome, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Blackbird, Revolution 9. On the cusp of rounding up to a 5.
Definitely had some iconic songs I loved, also had a lot of in between stuff..
#431. This is the fith album of theirs I've done so far, and the first one that even tries to live up to the Beatles hype. There's definitely some real good shit here, but a lot of unnecessary fluff as well. If this album was trimmed to like 45-50 minutes instead of an hour and a half, with nothing but the excellent songs and dropped a few of the less interesting songs, I feel like it could actually be the masterpiece that people act like it already is. 4/5: too long
I enjoyed listening to this a lot. It’s got some of my personal favorite Beatles songs on it. I appreciate its experimental-weirdness and generally prefer The Beatles’ later albums.
fun album
A very good Beatles album but not their best. Disc 1 is stronger than disc 2 and it's a very long album. Revolution 9 is bizarre and takes away from the album, in my opinion. 8/10 (4/5)
Lots of good songs, some clear classics. Nothing really bad, but it is a lot of music.
I wish that I had been alive when the Beatles were peaking because I want to experience first hand how groundbreaking their music contributions are. I grew up with all of their albums, so while I love them, I can’t appreciate how much of an impact these albums must have had on the music industry and culture at large. Not my fav of their albums but some absolute treasures.
I always thought that the Beatles is bad. Because their populars songs really are. But this album is nice.
9th Beatles album. Mid 60s. Clearly more on form and experienced than Hard Days Night. 30 tracks! Very varied. Lots of hits but also lots of silly songs. Some beautiful folk songs, some ggod rock. Ends with insane 8 minute cacophony and a kitschybmovie musical track. A bit all over the place, but some gorgeous songs.
"The White Album" is a sort of a mixed bag, in my opinion. There are songs that are simply marvelous, including but not limited to "Happiness Is A Warm Gun", "Sexy Sadie", and of course — "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", George Harrison's creative masterpiece. But then, there's other songs like "Wild Honey Pie" and "The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill", true testaments of hallucinogens' influence on The Beatles. And who can forget the infamous "Revolution 9" (can we even call it 'music'?) I know John Lennon was trying to be "avant-garde", similar to Yoko Ono, but he should've just kept to Paul's granny music. Then there's all the numbers that are simply insignificant or downright filler. Songs like "Piggies" and "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey" are prime reasons why I — despite my love for The Beatles — have only heard "The White Album" about 3 times in its entirety. Side C and D are a particular drowse (except for "Long, Long, Long", I love that song and state my claim that George Harrison was a fantastic songwriter), and frankly, unnecessary. The ambiguity of the album vexes me but it does bring about a level of charm. If you have an hour and a half to spare — I definitely recommend settling down and giving "The White Album" a spin. Who knows? You may be delightfully surprised, severely disappointed or maybe both!
Almost every double album would be better as a single album
I've never actually listened to this all the way through. In fact, I've probably played a few of these songs more than I've listened to the recordings. I was in a band where I was the youngest member at the ripe age of 34, and we played a loooot of Beatles because most of the other members grew up on this. I can say that playing some of these songs is a lot more fun than listening to them. Obla-Di was a big crowd pleaser, and it's got a really fun bassline, but man is that a goofy song. There are some seriously great tunes on here (While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Back in the USSR, Blackbird, etc) but there is the usual acid fueled 60's jingles like Wild Honey Pie, Don't Pass Me By and the aforementioned Obla-di. I imagine a lot of people include Revolution 9 on there, but I always have to laugh because I've inserted "Number 9....number 9....number 9" in to so many stupid moments of my life. I don't think this is the masterpiece so many other people say it is but for a double album it goes by surprisingly quick and there are some genuinely great songs on here, and even what I would consider the not so great ones are perfectly fine.
Sorry alvast dat het geen 5 krijgt… maar ik vind het het net niet. Album in z’n geheel is te lang en soms wat incoherent. Desondanks, veel leuke nummers en een echte Beatles classic
An absolute classic. When My Guitar Gently Weeps I can listen to anytime. Fairly long, and loses momentum at times - but it’s never a bad listen. The only ‘bad’ track is Revolution 9 (damn you Yoko). Not an intro album for any new Beatles listener but one that will satisfy for many years to come.
Closest I’d say a double album could come for a 5 so far. That Revolution 9 kind of throws it at the end, 8 minutes of whatever, that’s the part that lost the 5 for me. But fantastic album overall and it doesn’t feel its length there.
Rating: 8.5/10 It's unquestionably a great album, but also way too long. The range of styles on here is truly remarkable, but at 30 songs it's simply too long. Could easily be 5 stars if they kept the best 20 songs even.
Chaotic to say the least!
my god... for the first time, I've actually listened to this album before! but it's yet another classic double album, which is quite a time commitment. fortunately though, i'm in my second lifetime beatles phase (the first was when my college bff was obsessed with them + the movie musical 'across the universe' came out (which was mid, but the soundtrack was fun)), and am presently in the middle of watching Get Back because several friends are deep into beatles fandom as a way of escaping from the world (whereas i personally chose to do this album project instead). anyway, the beatles lore goes insanely deep, and i like that. also, the songs are poppy and short and distinct from each other, and i like that too. i do think disc 1 is much stronger than disc 2. highlights: dear prudence, ob-la-di, ob-la-da (i never know this one had rudolph-the-red-nosed-reindeer-esque parentheticals), blackbird (#basic), piggies (legitimately one of my favorite songs; i like piggies-the-animal, harpsichords, and chamber-pop vibes), i will (on many a mushy mixtape), good night (wholesome) ironic highlight: bungalow(!) bill lowlights: glass onion (although I like that paul's name's in there), wild honey pie (i guess i've always hated songs with weird jangly noises), happiness is a warm gun (i teach at a quaker school after all), rocky raccoon (my college bff's most hated beatle song because of the accent, but it is kind of stinker in its own right. although it apparently inspired the MCU's rocket raccoon, which i like), why don't we do it in the road? (we already have the musically superior 'the bad touch' and anyway i don't want to contemplate paul as a sexual being), julia (zzz), everybody's got something to hide except me and my monkey (hate monkeys-the-animal!), midlights/misc: 'honey pie' feels like it should be on a disney sing along songs compilation. 'revolution 9' makes me lol because i first experienced it via my parents saying 'number 9' a lot when i was a wee kiddo. not much of a "song", though, is it? really even the duds are listenable, just a bit boring. a solid 4 for day 4! bonus shameful confession: i have always struggled with if it's spelled 'beatle' or 'beetle' when i'm writing (for both the bug/car and the band) and i only just realised that they're... the beat-les. yes i am a linguist
Such an eclectic mix of genres, blackbird, while my guitar softly weeps are so good, also can’t believe Helter Skelter is by them too! Not all the songs were to my taste but overall good album
This is an album so brimming with brilliance. I can’t help but feel that perhaps trimming it down would only serve to improve it. The problem there, is I could suggest a song to cut, and I’d probably have a large number of Beatles fans forming a mob. There’s no way you could get a consensus on what to keep. For example, my dad decries “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” as being nursery rhyme rubbish, but I love the silliness of the lyrics (and I think the little flub only adds to it), and the way the instruments are interwoven (was that a marimba I just heard - it was not, I clearly don’t know my instruments)? I do struggle to come to terms with the fact that “The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill,” something out of a warped children’s TV show (complete with “singing” from Yoko) leads us directly into “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” which is, to me, a classic song, and that opening guitar immediately washes over me like a soothing wave. There’s also something very ballsy about starting your album with a song parodying both Chuck Perry and The Beach Boys, but “Back in the USSR” absolutely works. For me, it’s really just the bloated nature of the album that stops it from being a perfect score. Standout Song: While My Guitar Gently Weeps Score: 4/5
# Playlist track - While My Guitar Gently Weeps # Notes - 90 mins, 30 tracks. There are a bunch of awesome ones, yes. But the album as a whole feels kind of disjointed and not very well put together. - If you're a fan of the Beatles, and want to get this deeper dive on their musical history, this is a must-listen! Otherwise, not really.
Not as good as Abbey Road but it’s still my favorite Beatles album
Should this have been a double album? It's an impressive collection of songs, considering relationships within the band were getting very strained. But by 1968 I think more sophistication in the lyrics was expected than is shown in many songs here, especially the pastiche songs and the more twee songs. That said, there some absolute crackers in here, possibly the majority. I even like Revolution No9.
Some songs on here are 5s, but others are not that great. This album is definitely a mixed bag.
I'd never listened to the album before and it probably belongs on the list based on reputation alone. While My Guitar Gently Weeps is an absolute classic. Many of the other songs are good by themselves, and overall the album stands up to the rigours of time. Far, far better than Sgt Pepper's (of course).
My least favourite Beatles album and probably the only one I would not give a perfect score
Great album but I'm only going with 4stars as there are a couple of tracks on here that are not up to usual Beatles standards.
wild honey pie is an all time classic, peak beatles
Cant go wrong with the beatles! Really loved the vibe during work! Best song: Back To The U.S.S.R
Sehr nice scho s erste Beatles Album dinne zha. Han immer Schwierigkeiten gha mich a Beatles mit ihrne 100 Albe ahznöchere aber The White Album findi en grosse Spass und While my Guitar gently weeps sowie mis (bisherige) Lieblingslied vo ihne
zum glück isch de 9 to 5 arbetsalltag so lang dasi ziit han zum s'ganze white album lose grundsätzlich sicher cinema grande aber hed hüt irgendwie scho wieder weniger ghittet als erwartet… sit mer jetzt so viel banger album nachenand gha hend muessi langsam fröge öbi mini kontextuelli notegebig chli muess ahpasse… aber ehrlich und historisch betrachtet halt scho es 4i, oder wie's de don neduzen würd säge: quattro formaggi
A bit disappointed with this one. I've heard so much about this album but never given it a full listen until now. There' a decent amount of very good songs on here, but the rest feels so unnecessary or simply songs that should not have made the cut. Probably at least 10 songs feel like filler and kind of drag out the experience of the record. 7/10
Every Beatles album took me some time to get into - since I'd never listened to one in its entirety until adulthood, I was expecting the second coming of Jesus. This was not helped by the old stereo mixes - this has now been fixed for many of their classic works now. Anyway this one took even longer, as thirty tracks I've never heard before is insane for a band that had been built up so much. Like everyone else I'm always trying to find the ideal single album here, but I'd pretty much take 80% of the first one and swap a couple around. The second half drags on so much at times. A classic, obviously belongs on the list; it's in the second tier of Beatles records and probably my fifth favourite.
Reminds me of music from pingu
Loved it! It’s right in between two styles of Beatles I feel. Sounds like they’re on their way somewhere and it also seems to have been q influential for more psychedelic rock
26/10/24 I've never listened to a Beatles album before and this was a pleasant surprise.
Kul och annorlunda
What a bizarre album. Half the songs seem like they're from a subversive kids album and the other half are pretty normal Beatles songs. Definitely seems like the end was nye for the band although some amazing stuff came out of this album.
4 stars
I mean, yeah. Influential, scattered, magnificent. Nothing else new can really be said about this album. Didn't fully connect with me in parts however, and I think the Siouxsie and the Banshees version of Dear Prudence is better
The older I get, the less important this album becomes to me. Disc 1 is almost all bangers. Disc 2…well, I think it suffers from the curse of all double albums, that they would have been extraordinary single albums if the band had been more judicious about what to leave off. Obviously there is richness of material here, and richness of style, and, given that this was more of a collection of individual efforts rather than a collective effort, a very specific set of intentions. It’s clever, and creative, and simply not their best.
Some great tracks, but also some really weird tracks.
It's obviously good. I like the hits on it quite a bit. The rest is alright. Will I listen to again: 80%
Initial bangers but lost me in the second half a bit, 3.5 rounded up
their best
Exponentially creative and ground breaking, you can tell they pushed the artistry to the limits on sgt pepper and then refined their roots through this drug induced creative lens. These guy knew they were in a league of their own and this album may finally be where they started to let it get to their heads, but they didn’t forget how to right a fucking great song, they used the momentum and continued to push the envelope. The risks taken here are beautiful to experience and we really get something that expanded music. The only drawback is the length and inclusion of less strong songs.
Too long. Take the best 12-14 songs and it’s 5 stars.
It's definitely not a bad album. 4/5. But after hearing the Beatles' reputation for years, I realised that it was a very overrated album.
Luv me Beatles They made this AFTER Sgt. Peppers and MMT and that somehow feels like a step back
Classic. 1st album not so much the 2nd but overall very good
Nice
My favorite Beatles album.
Now here’s a test - I’m not a Beatles fan, but they are undeniably good on this record - a lot of dross but some absolute gems amongst them. Like a wise man said - a single album would have been better
Some of the best songs ever written mixed in with some absolute duffers. If this was a single LP with the best tracks, it would be up there with Revolver as the best album of all time. Still, for all that it's still worth a solid 4/5
What's more, is left to say about this one? The ultimate monument to musical genius and egotistical ambitions for music groups across all decades and genres. It has both some of my all-time favorite songs of all time (not just from the Beatles) and some of the most infamous and avoidable songs ever recorded. Even though, it's always great listening to this album. I rate it with four stars because, in my opinion, the second half isn't as strong as the first one, and the whole listening experience can be dragged a little bit longer than expected in the last quarter of the album.
This is probably the best start to an album I've heard yet. Disc one is nearly non-stop incredible, iconic tracks. Then disc two hits. It isn't bad, just weird, and not necessarily in a good way. If this was only disc one, it would be five stars, without a doubt.
A classic, but not my favourite Beatles album. Fav songs (in order) 'Happiness Is A Warm Gun', 'Dear Prudence', 'I Will', 'Sexy Sadie', 'Helter Skelter'
Fixed most problems I had with the earlier Beatles album. Songs felt fleshed out and had lasting power. Some songs were a bit to slow for my taste but overall good album
Great double album by one of the all time best.
It felt like a fall album walking through the city when I was listening to it. Ob li da is my favorite. Didn’t listen to the second section.
Revolution 9 prevents me from giving this album 5 stars
The Good: The BEATLES The Bad: no revolution 2 through 8 The Ugly: too much of this, not enough of that Yes, "the white album" is viewed by critics as one of, if not THE best album ever recorded. I am not a critic, I just enjoying listening to music and finding out if my head will sway left and right... more importantly, whether or not I will find myself yearning to listen to the album again for the coming days. For the moment, I have not found myself yearning too much. Though I have to say that Revolution 9 is an AWESOME recording, and will most likely be the tune I pick as selection for my 1001 album playlist. Though initially I thought I would choose While My Guitar Gently Weeps, I have to say that I was disappointed in the terrible guitar playing--Prince just raised the bar too much with his solo in this version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SFNW5F8K9Y Anyway, yes, great songwriting, and the fab4 are/were great musicians, but this is not my favorite Beatles album. 4* stars due to the classic tunes on here, but it should be 3*
I love the Beatles and I love this album. It's not my favorite album, it's a bit all 'over the place', which is probably a reflection of how the band was during this tumultuous period, Ringo quit the band for a couple of weeks! It's WAY TO LONG! Fav's - Happiness is a Warm Gun and While My Guitar Gently Weeps. I also like annoying people by claiming to like Revolution 9 lol
What a crazy album! I enjoyed this one more than the Revolver album (which could be because I listened to it while tipsy, in a hot tub, with a Beatles loving friend, who was singing along to every track!) Its pretty bizarre in places, unhinged lyrics, and I imagine it was released in a time where no one could say 'no' or edit down the track listings! Its a bit long and I didn't enjoy every track, but I'm giving it a 4 Fave Tracks: While my guitar gently weeps and Blackbird
Didn’t love this as much as I thought I would. Still pretty good though.
This album is (almost) wall to wall excellent. The percentage of songs on this double album that are iconic is hard to fathom. It pains me to have to give it four stars though, thanks solely to Revolution 9. I once jumped over a couch to shut this song off it’s so awful. To justify this one song taking away a full star, to me it is like someone who everyone knows to be a really nice guy - a friendly, shirt off his back kinda guy. Just the best guy. But then you find out he also runs a dogfighting ring. It’s just that bad of a song.
this is a groundbreaking album, but its not a perfect 5
The highs are tempered by some objectively mediocre to bad songs (even in the context of the time). Still a great album, but needed a brutal cut to 3 sides at the very most
Not my favourite favourite Beatles album but still a classic.
They're high on their own supply at this point in their career, but it's pretty good supply so there're lots of good songs on here. My god, the hype is out of control, though - get a grip, people!
The monkey DEFINITELY has something to hide.
So many songs, some very trippy
Favorite Tracks: While My Guitar Gently Weeps Back In The U.S.S.R. Helter Skelter
IMO, it has all their best stuff on it. But, boy, does it need an editor.
I am ungodly excited for this. The first song kicks anything Franz Ferdinand had to say yesterday to fuckin Pluto. Back in the USSR rips. Meat and potatoes rock that is somehow thought provoking and exciting. What at time feels like an interlude is still somehow so invigorating. That lead guitar rules. Glass onion grew on me. Ob-La-Di-Ob-La-Dull. Music that plays at a swinger retreat at an affordable Sandals. Possibly a cruise ship Wednesday dance lineup in an empty ballroom. Raffi for sad adults. Pass. Weird interlude makes me happy. TikTok distortion sounds were, wait, done BEFORE TikTok???? Good stuff. Bungalow bill is kids music with heartbreaking folk verses and a bunch of weird voice changes. God it’s sick. Mild applause outro is the cherry on top. Time for some guitar tears without the pomp of Yngwie Malmsteen or Steve Vai pretending they’re able to convey a single emotion via their rigidity. This is great. The riff is heavy, the guitar is soulful. This album has excellent songwriting Blues mixed with nostalgia mixed with soul. Every song is hitting for the most part. The vocals both lead and backing rule so hard. These guys aren’t overrated. I said it. I’ll have a sasparilla Mack. Oh wait, that was just the open. Violins being introduced now? A little saccharine here but there’s still such dynamism in the vocal lines. Not a highlight here, but the structures keep you waiting for what’s next. I’m so tired. Speak for yourself Beatle, I’m pretty excited still. Another nice blues-y song. Blackbird is a hit and probably plays at millennial weddings, but it is very nice. There are just such excellent songwriting ideas. Quiet and beautiful. Back to early hints of psychedelia. Kids songs with odd macabre elements. Gripping. Especially the pig sounds. Impersonating our young neighbours to the south??? I won’t have it. Yes I will. I lied. Why is this song about a gunslinger raccoon so beautiful. Despite the abhorrent practice of performing human surgery on what I can only assume is abominant anthropomorphic raccoon, this song makes me want to kick down a saloon door and reinjure this raccoon if only to hear another song. Wet circus music is the only way I can describe the next song. Distorted kids album from hell is kind of fitting this album. Mixed in with some of the best songs ever, this puppy is rolling along. Then it’s somehow a bluegrass song? Man I hate all other music now. I’m an insufferable Beatles dad. Do WHAT in the road??? Blues classic. Somehow so good. White guy blues has the potential of dipping into Hard Rock Cafe core, but this feels genuine. Of course it does. It’s their main influence. In a song title that could be a response to the last song, I will is another gentle moment following the raucous outpouring of blues power in the previous track. Although this is a little bit cheesy, the odd instrumentation keeps things gripping. End of disc 1 pretty much. Have to get past the first obnoxious chorus of the day. Ah well. Can’t all be hits. WHOA. It’s a birthday. And a recognizable riff from what feels like a 1000 movie montages. It’s not my birthday nor is it any member of the Beatles (I checked). This was mid. Now lonely and wanting to die?? That’s a sentiment people can get behind. This rules. More excellent blues with heavy guitar and PROMINENT bass. That main riff rules. This album has so many ideas that would be done worse as time went on. Sometimes with pioneering stuff, you hear rudimentary versions of what would become better. Just the opposite here which is impressive. Saying that, this song IS fairly boring, but it predates even more boring stuff that would rip this off. That monkey seems like he’s hiding something. Namely weird screaming and a bizarre interlude. Nothing much to say about this. Apparently Helter Skelter invented metal. It did not, considering the song Black Sabbath was released ONE year later. Still. The song rules. It makes me mad that people who have never listened to metal have determined this to be its birth because it’s loud. Anyway, I have blisters on my fingers from writing this poorly conceived schlock about these albums. I need a diary. This album is long long long. I’m sure this could have been like three albums or maybe had a few songs cut as there are some dragging points. This is one. Slow revolution! This song is great in all forms. The peanuts style horn is a choice. This song invented doo-wop (helter skelter callback, relax). This is certainly a less wild honey pie. 20’s nostalgia?? these are Benny Goodman hours. What a strange end to this. Kind of lurching to a finish. Still fascinating, but less musical. Yeah I’m running out of inane things to say. For now. I’m sure I’ll recharge. But this one is sort of limping to the finish. Hoping for a big final two songs. Number 9. We’re taking music to strange new places pal. I’m a pretentious nerd so I like this. Sue me. Man the mushrooms did indeed hit in the last couple tracks. A psychedelic children’s hymn closer. What else? HIGHLIGHTS: Back in the USSR, The Continuing Story of Bungalow Bill, While my Guitar Gently Weeps, Rocky Raccoon, Yer Blues, Helter Skelter, Revolution 1, Revolution 9
The sheer volume of songs is impressive.
люблю пару песен с альбома, но в целом больше Дон Дрейпер в его отношении
I was surprised by how diverse this album was and how many songs I enjoyed. Still not a Beatles fan, lover, or anything close to that, but I was able to pull some fun out of it. The double album does drag near the end, but there is a good peppering of those good songs. Standouts: While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Martha My Dear, Blackbird, Rocky Raccoon, Don’t Pass Me By, Everybody Has Something To Hide Except Me and My Monkey, and shelter Skelter.
I think this is pretty easily the band's most divisive record, and that makes a lot of sense. It's proof that the double album is always a risky endeavor that in my honest opinion hardly ever pays off. Don't get me wrong, there are great double albums out there, but even The Beatles show that it's very easy to jam pack them with filler. Too much of this album feels like The Beatles' Appalachian Vacation, and if you're a familiar listener, you know exactly which tracks I'm talking about. Not to mention no one is arguing that Birthday is a generation-defining masterpiece. Even if you're a diehard fan, you have to be questioning what some songs are doing here. That said, The White Album is responsible for producing some of the most iconic songs in the catalog. Blackbird, Back in the USSR, Helter Skelter (arguably the first "metal" song), Happiness is a Warm Gun with its insane time changes, and WMGGW are undeniably great. It also almost single-handedly changed the direction rock music would go in for the next 40 years. So I guess there’s that.
Great stuff. Justifiably famous. Some silly tracks on here that could definitely have been left on the cutting room floor (e.g. the totally unnecessary "Rocky Racoon", "Revolution 9", "Everybody's Got Something..."), but overall really decent music that really showcases their creative and musical ability.
good album would be better if you trimmed off at least 10 of the filler tracks
Its the fucking Beatles White Album. If it were 45 mins shorter, it would be the best Beatles album far.
Good album with some great tracks
Again, not my favourite Beatles album, but a fascinating look into how their music changed over the decade or so they were together. I hate Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da with a passion.
Rarely do I give albums 2 listens before reviewing but I really missed the beauty of this album on the first listen. Really enjoyed this despite not have many hit songs on her.
Disc 1 is great, maybe not my style 100% but my highlights would be While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Back In The USSR Disc 2 is worse, but the highlights are; Helter Skelter, Revolution 1, Savoy Truffle
Classic, many hits. Some filler
No review needed. Great from start to finish. There are a number of songs on this album that seem like they were experiments and could have been cut. E.g. Revolution 9
I struggle to really get heavily into this album. I love the variety of sounds and experimental vision, I just don't think the songwriting is up to par with my favorite Beatles albums. A classic nonetheless, just not top tier.
I felt high
Could have been 5 stars for 'while my guitar gently weeps' alone, but then 'revolution no. 9'....!
Really really good
It's the White Album. What more needs to be said.
This is probably the weirdest mishmash of styles and tone I’ve ever known put on an album. But it all works. That’s just a massive testament to The Beatles’ songwriting abilities (collective and individual) that they were able to channel something amazing while the band was falling apart. From any other artist, a double album with so little cohesion would have been a disaster (e.g. Bob Dylan’s Self Portrait), but somehow an hour and a half of songs as varied as the proto-metal “Helter Skelter”, folksy “Mother Nature’s Son”, completely avant-garde “Revolution 9”, and borderline novelty songs like “Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da” and “Piggies” actually fit well together. This album is far from flawless, but its flaws help define it.
Enough variety to be interesting; too many weird ones for a full 5. Some really good ones on here, though, and I'll always have a soft spot for it. "I Will" is the lullaby I sing to my kiddo at bedtime <3 4/5
Back in the U.S.S.R, Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Di, While Me Guitar Gently Weeps, Helter Skelter, Blackbird och Revolution är 5or allihop. Lol.
Men bra. Vissa låtar är snorbra. Andra bra, en del ok. Hade med lätthet gått att släppa ett album med bara bra låtar. Men ändå kul med många låtar. While my guitar gently weeps är bäst.
Väldigt mycket bra på den här skivan, men också några bottennapp. My guitar gently weeps, som jag verkligen älskar, är dock för mig den enda absoluta fullträffen. Som helhet ändå en fyra.
A great album
Took many years to get into this, but glad I finally did. The ingenuity and innovation is extremely impressive, but the one thing holding it back is it's insistence on including songs that are too far out there and too far removed from musical reality it detracts from the rest of the album. Some songs aren't great but allow the album to push it's boundaries (Bungalow Bill, Honey Pie, etc.), but others take that too far and ruin it a bit. I think if they excluded Wild Honey Pie, Piggies, Revolution 9 etc. The latter inclusion are the only thing holding this record back from being 5*.
