Reviews (page 11 of 11)
Always struggled with funk rock... Bit boring after a while, maybe I just lack the funk.
Pretty funky but long meandering songs. I preferred Mothership Connection.
Album not available. Other music aight.
how can you not love the 1st track, a pure classic - it's been sampled so much and there are so many sound bytes from it like 'feet don't fail me now' but for me the tracks all mix together as the album progresses and they end up all sounding the same.
Sounded all the same.
I just can't really do funk albums. The tracks just drag on foreeeeeeeeeeeever. They don't really feel like they're going anywhere just kinda rambling on. Don't like.
it's ok as background music, but just all blends together. meh
Did not feel the groove.
👎 not for me
This album wasn't available on Spotify. I'm pretty sure it wouldn't have been my thing anyway...so I'll give it a 2/5.
i realize i don’t like funk very much. it’s not bad, just not for me and that is ok.
Oof. Ok. But repetitive.
könnt nice sein, aber not on spotify
Never heard this before. I enjoyed the Maggot Brain album a lot more than this one. Interesting that the song Maggot Brain shows up here. I don't think I needed to hear more than 1 Funkadelic album before I died.
não me pegou nem um pouco
No need for this to be an hour
Not my style
Very short. More an EP than an album. Funky.
Didn‘t move my funky bones.
Letkee ja hauska, muttei ihmeellinen
- Hab den Namen der Band und es Albums gelesen und dachte nur "Oh no, here we go" - War leider wie befürchtet. Funky as hell und groovy ohne Ende. Alles andere? Keine Ahnung. 2/5
There’s some great songs in here somewhere, but Clinton & Co. have a bad habit of burying the lead under six feet of every riff and instrument they could add to the tape without turning it transparent. I get that the point is to basically push funk to the edge of psychedelic prog rock (see: “Who Says a Funk Band Can’t Play Rock?!”), but given how little I enjoy either of those genres, it kind of ruins the funk here. The guitar riffs are too fluid, the grooves are too loose, the synths and bells and whistles are just that — bells and whistles that don’t add much. Musically, this album sounds like the wheels are about to fall off, and I get how that can sound appealing, but for me it lacks cohesion. I also find the lyrics to be absurdist to the point where anyone who sees any depth there has to be projecting, which gives the overall music more credit than it deserves. Historically, Funkadelic has been a band I want to love in theory, but can’t stand in practice, though I’d be the first to admit that I’ve barely scratched the surface of their full discography. One Nation Under a Groove comes closer to good than most of the Funkadelic albums I’ve listened to so far, but it’s still flawed in exactly the ways I expected it would be. Most of my issues are on Side B, where the ridiculousness of “The Doo Doo Song” and the corny vocals of “Into You” push me toward negative. I just find Funkadelic exhausting, and this record doesn’t do much to change that fact, even if I can see a moment here or there where I could bend my brain and enjoy it.
Not awful, but I didn't care for this album.
First listen Saved 3/9 Top track:
Ouin
Wasn't for me 2.5
bland funk
Oh, I don't like the cover, but let's get on and give this a play. Well, I found this rather a dull album. Much preferred the earlier album Maggot Brain
The link to the album on Spotify showed me that which frustrates me about that platform at times, which is that, in the case of for this specific album, most of the songs were greyed out. However, searching for the song "Into You" took me to an album called "Under a Groove CD1"... What is there to say about the album? Some of the stuff is excellent, other stuff even more so, and then some more less... However, why why why do these funk albums all have to have tracks that go on for ever and ever and ever? For me, it is impossible to pick a favorite song from the album, however, the most memorable one, and probably my pick for my "1001 Album play list" will be "P.E. Squad" as I could have sworn that I was listening to the soundtrack of almost any '70s porn flick!
Really enjoyed it.
Not really my style
Damn, sadly not a fan. Has its moments, but it's a really messy album experience over all. "Maggot Brain" is much better and coherent.
Funk lite? I didn't really find this album to be all that funky or interesting. There's nothing here that grabbed me enough to want to listen to a complete track. I had higher expectations and was disappointed.
Love funk, just can’t get into this for whatever reason 🤷🏻♂️
Funky is correct
I have to admit, I expected more. I didn't recognize an of the tracks, there was certainly some great instrumentation but nothing that made me want to come back for more.
Haven't yet listened
Funky but falls off due to tracks being too long.
2.5 it aight. Songs are way too long and some are a jumbled mess
a neurological enema indeed
messy music, obscene lyrics, only a little funky.
This album didn't do much for me, I like the 1971 album better. This was a bit too loose for me, jam band vibes. On a positive note I wouldn't mind dancing to this, but not an album I'd see myself just putting on for a listen.
Why they didn’t choose the- Standing on the Verge of Getting it On album is a mystery to me!
Not funky enough, in my opinion. Rock vibe helped a teeny bit. A lot of this sounded the same. Which would be fine if it was interesting. I thought it would be waaaay more groovy. I won't be rushing to listen to this again.
Made for good background music but I didn’t find it particularly interesting. Enjoyable enough but I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen again. I do admit my opinion may be slightly affected by the fact that we’ve have 3 funky-ish albums already. One can only funk so much!
I did not listen to this album nor do I wish to.
meh 2/5
Not for me. 2 stars
Kurz und nicht so meins
p408. 1978. 2 stars. Well done of its kind, but wrong audience. Also subject to the usual late 70's wankage.
Not on Spotify, which makes it annoying to judge. Managed to find a version on YouTube, it after about 20 minutes and my fourth adbreak i gave up. There was one funky track near the start I liked, after that it got a bit naff. Move on.
For a funk band - with funk actually in their name - I would, quite frankly, expect more funk. This is my second Funkadelic and, while both have been solid albums, they just haven't been that funky. There is a lot of proggy rock here, and lots of loose jamming around those themes. I didn't hate listening to it.
Not listened yet
This album wasn’t on Amazon Music, so I listened to Funkadelic - The Best (1999), just to get a feel for their overall catalog and vibe. I prefer the instrumental parts to the lyrics / vocals.
did not love it
sounds like a good album for fans of funk, but i doubt ill ever listen to it again
Started off strong. And I generally like Funkadelic ... but one of my least endearing traits is how much I hate toilet humor and so the fourth track was rough and the album never regained ground with me after that.
Admittedly, I only listened to half of this on YouTube, but wasn’t into it as much as earlier Parliament/Funkadelic albums.
i'm sorry folks, but it's time to publicly declare that I am not and never will be funky. i've made my peace with it, you should too, then we can all move on with our lives
This is my first Funkadlelic album to review, but I did review Parliament's Mothership Connection (which I loved) early on in my journey. I wasn't terribly impressed by this album. The guitar playing was great, and there were some pretty good moments sprinkled throughout the album, but the songs were way too long, and they never really managed to go anywhere interesting. "Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock" was easily the bright spot on the album for me; it was really the only song on the album that made me want to groove along with it. The song were really repetitive, but "Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock" was the one song where I didn't mind the repetition. I'm hoping that I'll enjoy Maggot Brain more than I enjoyed this.
„Maggot Brain“ live ist ein tolles Gitarrensolo. Der Rest ist Selbstbeweihräucherung und Drugs-Beat verstaubter Party Keller der 70er. Wenn diese Songs der Spirit der 70er sein sollte, weiß man warum die Welt auf ABBA wartete.
RnB, funk, 1978 -> 2
I have no idea what to even say about this. There's an entire song about poop, though. So that's fun.
Day42 - first of all it’s not on apple music which is a pain. listening to it on youtube just isn’t the same but it seems less funky and more psychedelic
Joah. Nicht die Offenbarung.
This is not an album - it's one song, repeated. Great for ticking one off the list, bad for enhancing your life with the joys of music.
Musik: 🎸🎤🆒🤷♂️ Wertung: 2-3/5
Too Funky
Tracks too long. i guess that goes with the genre. Cohesive subject matter. Arrangments just ok. I wanted to like it more. As the AB folks would say, "but it had a good beat"
Not really my cup of tea in terms of music style, but was an ok funk R&B album that had a huge black rock sound. I can see how it would have been popular at the time culturally but don't love this style. Best: One Nation Under A Groove Worst: Maggot Brain/Chant Note: Spotify didn't have the album so I listened on YouTube
Wasn’t on YouTube music
I am not sure what it is about funk that doesn't connect with me. Instrumentally is was tight, but I was ready to be done about half way through.
It was okay
This album was okay. Some songs I enjoyed, others were not my favourite. I found the sound across the album to be generally the same.
Geschrummel
Weird
Not my style
Unavailable on any streaming service I could find.
Funkadelic - not my typical music choice. Enjoyed it though and would listen again - occasionally.
Apple only had the title track and not the full album sadly I got the just of it. It’s funk, has an African feel a bit. It’s fine. It’s not my thing 4.5/10
Too funky
Corny shit.
Most if it was fine, funky, nice to groove too. The 11 minute song that was most variations on poop references was awful.
OK funk album.
Funk, but I didn't get into the groove
I didn't really like this album although the guitar leads are really nice at the end there.
Var bare to sanger på Spotify. Ikke min greie uansett.
Too unfocused for me. Honestly just sounds like a big old mess.
Get funky. The Mental Enema was ridiculous.
Ah, the first track is classic. After that, its kind of garbled junk.
Pretty run of the mill late 70s R&B
Not my jam, though there's obviously good artistry at play here.
Couldbt find it as an album, but only a song
Unfortunately this isnt one for me. It got the toes tapping but was, instantly, forgettable. Although I will try some others from the same artist.
too much or too little funk. i can't decide
Meh
kafić muzika
I was impressed that each song sounded very different from another. However, even the shorter songs felt like an eternity. My interest would trail off quite quickly. I did get the impression that they were having fun and I loved how they describe themselves on the sleeve notes. That’s very funny. I also thought they were about to break into the Addams family theme tune in Grooveallegiance. Those were the moments of amusement, but it did go on way too long. Classic 2.5.
Not my thing 2/5
Could only find the song, funky.
Couldn't listen to the album on Spotify, but the song I did hear was fun. Gonna keep an eye out for this one on vinyl.
Began iffy. Backhalf is dope vibe tho
Funkkia, mutta toistaa aika paljon itseään
A lot of my favorite music is influenced by funk. That being said, this album got worse the further into listening I got. It is a disappointment that we started off so well with our title song, but slowly devolved into just chanting with changing chords. While I love chanting in songs every now and then, and I thought the effect of chanting over consistently changing chords was interesting, (hypnotic? cult-like? Ask me in a few days while I simmer on it), it was not an enjoyable experience.
A little irritated that this isn't on Spotify. Just didn't get to spend the time with it that I wanted to. Kinda wish I could assign no rating and move on. 1 - bad 2 - average 3 - good 4 - great 5 - outstanding
Average on first listen except the last couple songs
Sounds very modern, not at all what I was expecting. Getting some reggae vibes now. I really don't know what this is...
Not for me but I can see the appeal of something like this. I’m not too into but for fans of this genre I can see why it’s on this list. I think in hindsight it’s a high mark even if it didn’t resonant with me
Inte i min smak.
I don’t remember anything about this album a day after I listened to it. I don’t think I remembered anything about it the moment it finished. I guess I’m giving it a 2.
Prefer this to the other Funkadelic album
I get the idea of this, but the constant guitar noodling over everything was too distracting after a while. It was all I could hear. I have never really been one for guitar solos, especially through the whole of every song. I played it through but got very distracted by said soloing, so not much else I can say about it.
Some of the beats were okay but the shouting about poop was weird.
Not bad, but too repetitive
Ugh. Lot to get through that isn't my music. Didn't really enjoy anything until I got to Maggot Brain... but that is just a passionate ass guitar solo. That is da bomb. The rest i can easily let fade away.
I'm just not funky enough, groovy enough or psychedelic enough. As much as I'd like to wear the outfits it's just not for me
this wasnt worth my trip off of streaming
For a supposedly great album, I found it very repetitive. Nice it wasn’t a another 70s rock band but that won’t get it more stars. 3/10
Hmm apple music lazy sunday 7miler
Boring
not good
Much less insane than Maggot Brain. The long jams remain, but aren't as excessive or weird. Strangely, I sort of miss the cuckoo clocks and assorted animal noises. What is left is rocky funk, which is basically fine, but not that memorable. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: One Nation Under a Groove Date listened: 06/05/22
Opening track gets all the stars! Precipitous decline after that :( Cholly and Maggot Brain were not bad. I was expecting the whole album to be like track 1. Disappointing.
The title track is a classic, I like the way it seems to start in the middle of the song. The rest of the album, I dunno. There are a few more slow jams than I was expecting. I’m not exactly bolting to the dance floor when I hear it. I like their sense of humour, but the 11-minute song about shit is longer than it needs to be.
Didn't really grab me. Probably wouldn't listen to again.
This was really hard to find and that burned up a lot of my patience. By the time I listened to this I was already grumpy ... There's a lot going on here with the jamming and zoning out. Though I did recognize some of these tracks from 90's De La samples this was not for me.
Ding. Ding. Ding! We have another member of the JBZ*!!! I can’t get into the neutron bomb either, but I am really into the deep voice singing Into You. This album gets me moving and grooving, but there are too many parts that drone on. *That’s the Jeff Buckley zone for the uninitiated.
I did love the title track of this album. The next two songs were okay if just a little long and tedious. And then there was an eleven-minute song about bowel movements and fried ice cream that just lost me. And the rest just kind of went on from there. Like many albums I've experienced here, I like the sound of short samples when I listen again, but it was the hour-long experience that was more negative.
lievas
Too funky for me! Maggot brain/Chant was the standout for me, second half of that song was great
Odd
This album was about 20 minutes too long.
It just rambles too much with insufficient structure
Every funk song I’ve ever heard I’ve either completely loved or completely hated and there is absolutely no in between. This album has several of both. 2/5
Not on Spotify, but I did find the whole album on Youtube. Title track was good and I enjoyed it, but unfortunately the rest of the album disappointed me. 2
A solid 2.5
I've heard of Funkadelic and other George Clinton projects. I'm not sure if I've heard any tracks specifically from Funkadelic or not. All of the tracks on this album were new to me. Most of the individual tracks were okay, but the first track on the B-side was enough to sink the album as a whole. I would not listen to this album again.
October 26, 2021 Most of this isn't on Spotify so I only listened to the title track. Honestly not upset that I don't have to hear more of this.
American, 80s, Funk + Funny, = Male - {1/10}
Full disclosure: this album was not available on Spotify. However, that being said, I listened to some of their other music and didn't love it. Coupled with the song titles and year of release, I feel pretty safe in my assumption here.
1978. One Nation Under a Groove
What the funk? Not great.
cant find the album on Spotify so im rating the song. good song very funky
Hogwash !
Fun, but kinda meh? Idk, maybe I'm just saying this bc we got this album to listen to just after Earth Wind and Fire
А нет, действительно, весь фанк, что слышал, звучит как the thing that should not be. New York, I Love You but You're Bringing Me Down в Sound of Silver, будто говорит: «Смотри, мы могли бы нормальное музло играть, но не стали, хы-ы».
Could barely tell one track from the next and was never ending.
Some nice moments and an influence to a number of bands not to mention numerous hip hop samples over the years but can’t say I will ever go back
This should be better. It starts well but quickly fades into background music because it's so samey throughout. I kept forgetting I was listening to it. It's obviously very influential, you can play 'spot the sample' throughout the thing. Disappointing though, I thought it would be more and it so veryn early was.
Shame, there was pockets of delight in some of theses funk fests but they fell flat often. Cholly was a particular highlight. 2*
Sadly the same as the last funk album on here, couple of great tracks but around 60% faff and nonsense. Cholly and Who Says A Funk Band Can't Play Rock are ace though.
strange. their other album is amazing though
meh, has its moment tho

Un album foarte scurt hahah
Look, with George Clinton's resume, I went into this with higher expectations. My first thought? I can hear why some producers would sample tracks from this to bring a certain texture, there's definitely sonic richness here. But I gotta keep it real: the lyrics aren't the best. The vocals might trick you into ignoring that fact if you're just vibing, but I read along while listening so... yeah, impossible to miss. And here's my thing, if you're gonna be silly, commit. Embrace the unserious vibe, be proud of it, lean all the way in. That doesn't quite happen here. Also, some of these tracks could've been shortened. Maybe the length was intentional, I don't know, but personally it feels like a producer having fun in the studio showing off everything he can do. Which is fine, except when the excess starts overshadowing the brilliant parts. The repetition makes it feel monotonous, honestly the opposite of what the album's premise promised. A shame. This is an album with plenty of ideas and good elements, but it comes across a bit pretentious and lacking objectivity. Great concepts, messy execution. Needed someone to tell George "less is more" and mean it.
Not available on Spotify
Not for me. 1/5
The songs were too long. It’s not my favorite genre.
It’s starts quite enjoyable and obviously very funky, however the tracks are sooo long they become monotonous and boring. By half way through track two i’ve had enough and know all tracks are gonna be the same. Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis enema squad is just shit, so the name is at least partly right. The remaining tracks fall back into meandering overlong funk. For the second time i’ve seen Funkadelic pop up, think this will be good and then been proven quite how wrong i can be.
He ido saltando las canciones. Todas son parecidas y sin contenido.
Ikke fundet
Could not really find an album so i did not listen to it
Strange, hallmark product of its time. (Just like the previous Funkadelic from ~6 years prior I’ve already previously listened to.)
Songs too long and not on spotify
27th album with group. This is a repeat. I can’t believe I liked this the first time. The instrumentals are boring and repetitive, and the lyrics are awful. Good Songs - Who Says a Funk Band Can’t Play Rock?! Bad Songs - One Nation Under a Groove, Groovalleigance, Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers), Into You, and Cholly (Funk Getting Ready to Roll!)

By the time it got to 3 minutes into track 2 this was starting to annoy me. By 5 minutes into track 2 I was angry and wanting the whole experience to end. It seems I don't get 'funk' if this is supposed to be a great funk album. Perhaps it's a 'transatlantic thing'. Nah. Not for me. I am out. 1/5.
Nope
Somewhere in the middle of it I had to go do something so I paused it. When I came back I was like "at least that shit ended". Then I remembered it didn't. Unpausing it was like when you get used to the smell of a decomposing corpse in your house, then you get out to buy something, and when you get back home the stench is unbearable again even though you've spent the last two weeks breathing it Bonus songs were really good but they're not from the main album so I won't factor them in

look. it's kinda nice. but the length of each song makes me wanna cry. it doesn't progress or evolve into anything that i feel is very relevant to me. sry.
This album is too funky for me.
Nope, not for me.
So link seems broken, pulled up what I think is proper album on Spotify and outright from the first song like definitely no. Was not expecting some weird ASMR smacked onto a song like that. Granted see why this was also flagged. Again first song is the same rift on the guitar that’s used in whole lotta love by Led Zepplin so hence why this album is getting flagged.
No
Maggot Brain > Whatever the heck this is

Well I guess it’s danceable but the entire album is a repeat of one song so 1/5, what a ripoff.
What can I say, funk's just not for me
I didn't like this, I just couldn't get into it, sorry
Unfortunally the album wasnt on spotify anymore ,
Luckily there were only 3 songs of this album on Spotify.
Second Funkadelic album. Nothing new here, over long and monotonous.

I like the Parliament records much more. For my taste this is to slow and soft.
Langweilig - Funk halt. Spotify spielt nur "One Nation" aus. Die anderen Titel sind ausgegraut.
Not on Spotify unfortunately
This is definitely one of those albums on the list that, whilst I enjoyed it, I can't fully appreciate its importance or significance as it is so far out of my wheelhouse. I enjoyed it, but will likely never think of it again. I'll leave this one to the funk fans.

A melted bowl of ice cream.
Never listened to Funkadelic before, much to one of my mates disgust. He was so enthusiastic about this album when I told him it came up on the list, bless him. So I listened with an open mind. Track one went as I imagined. Nice and funky (obviously). Soon went downhill as track two was poor. Track three was surprising - whilst I didn’t like it, I appreciated the variation of the lead guitar part. Track four takes the award for the best and the worst song title of all time, and just droned on for far too long. Did the Chef from South Park sing ‘Into You?’ - awful song. About to give up after that one, and started skipping tracks until ‘Maggot Brain’ caught my attention. So out of place on this album…more Jimi Hendrix than Funkadelic… really good stuff. Bad again after that ‘highlight’ Well, that was a lot more varied than anticipated, but a mixed bag of rubbish. 1 star
Not super good. Pretty Superbad™️
Not my thing and couldn't play half the songs
Couldn't find this album on any service.
Spotify only had 2 songs I also realised I don't really like funk
Fun sounds but just not my vibe. Also…7+ minute songs! Crazy
This is very much not my kind of music. I think this album is probably chill to just have on in the background, but for me at least I'm not too interested in actively listening to this.
