Reviews (page 9 of 11)
Cool, just cool
Not the best funkadelic album but pretty good. Low 3.
Better than Maggot Brain but I can’t remember what I rated maggot brain. So this is really where we are explore just how inconsistent my scoring is throughout this whole nonsense. 3.4
Good fun, got me bopping.
Well it’s definitely funky. I feel that I should have maybe rated this higher because I can see it’s genuinely good and pleasant music. I think it’s just not my music, and while the vibes are immaculate, I don’t really get more out of it than just: oh, this is a vibe. But it is, in fact, a vibe.
The album is not available on spotify. I heard a version on YouTube that I _hope_ was the right one. On one hand I found myself thinking "wow, that's one classic hook after another". On the other hand, some of the songs went into these long jam sessions like Phish might, which for me gets a little old.
Uneven. But the good tracks delivered and it was fun hearing all the original source songs of so many hip hop samples.
A fun listen but less catchy than expected given how many artists have sampled, interpolated, and mimicked Funkadelic's vibe.
Was a little sad this isn't on a streaming service, since I'm not sure the version I heard was the one that was meant to be rated. Was okay, I wanted something a little groovier and a little less... silly? But to each their own, I guess. 3/5
I want my funk uncut!
Funkadelic for sure
Only one song (on Spotify anyway) It’s funk. Keeps a steady beat. Does not do anything exciting. Don’t think I’d search this one out for a replay. Mid 3.
ok
funk album
Lo escuché muchas veces y no me dan ganas.
Not available in Mexico
haha Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers) ??
An interesting mix of music
Recently funky, but definitely not enough to unite a nation. 2.5 stars
Some really awesome funky moments, some other moments, not so awesome.
“One Nation Under A Groove” pretty funky.
Getting down just for the funk of it.
The last part of the album saves it to a 3.
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United State of Groove and to the Music for which it stands, one Groove, indivisible, with liberty and funkiness for all
Grooooovy
Very good funk album. Very bold and brash yet mild to the ear. Melodically pleasing. I much prefer Maggot Brain but this one was sweet.
this was funky... but not *that* funky, y'know?
The spotify version is 3 songs long, two of which are the same song. Awesome song but the same. Don't know how to rate it but I reckon the real thing is great. I'll go 3, but its an unreliable review, probably should be higher
Лучшая песня - One Nation Under A Groove.
Can't listen
Reingegrooved würd ich mal sagen
Funk generally isn't really my thing - I like my music to have direction and development, and funk is more of a stationary feeling. But there are times when I want something groovy in the background that doesn't take too much attention, and this is quite good for that. It's a 3, which is the highest I think I can give within this genre.
This is more like what I would expect from a band called “Funkadelic”! Maggot Brain is hardly funky at all, and feels more like experimental rock, but this has some nice funk to it.
Had to listen on YouTube and kept getting interrupted at odd times for ads. Probably should be a four, but I didn’t get to really experience it properly.
purely because Spotify doesn't have the whole album... :((((
Funkadelic is always worth a listen. You can't help but love musicians that are incredibly skilled and just doing their thing the way they want to. Great vibe and skill. Maggotbrain is a stronger album but this is a great listen, despite having a few less impactful moments. This isn't a listen I'll go back to but I'm glad it exists.
- wish it was on Spotify - pretty groovy, not much to say again
It was good to run in the background but not good enough to really pay attention to it.
Well, only 3 songs were available on Spotify, so I can't really judge the album as a whole. But those were some good 3 songs.
Really enjoyed the vibes and slightly experimental editing
I think this was one song, or atleast I couldn't find this album on spotify
If you love Funk, or new to the genre, this is a good intro, although late 70's slant. Parliament is always a treat
couldn't listen not on spotify - listend to some other stuff to form basis of this review!
It's not bad but somehow it feels awkward, like poorly mixed maybe? I feel the many instruments and voices playing together lack balance in volume. I couldn't say I enjoyed it even if I tried to
A cool listen without loads of standout moments for me, but I also had it on while working on an essay so I’m not sure if that affected things. Funky album :)
Nostalgic look back wit this as background music for many a '78 house party. Now I'll be off, to get down, just for the funk of it
About average for the era
I think, for all the historic nature of this album, the glory of how it was recorded and thought about by all those involved, thinking it was going to presage a movement of change powered by music, it's a little lost on me. I listened to it about 3 times and it grew on me. Nicely. Feelings and characteristics just developed so nicely. I feel that for this album, it's the time and place has somewhat passed. The sounds are a bit dated, as are the attitudes. I do feel this is a historic album, and I was pretty chuffed to be able to spend time and hear it - and reading up on it was educational - but it lacked personal contemporary value on first listen - I finished with a firm 'nope, it's not one I feel keen to listen to again'. There are other funk albums that I responded to on a first listen, so much better. Yes, Funkadellic is good to experience, there are fantastic features to it. But as a Funk album, it is a bit flat. But, as a Rock album with funk, as a Prog Rock album with some funk, and as a psychedelia album, with some funk, heck I can enjoy this album. I like all those elements when I started to listen for them. It was a fun experience. It's a three stars for me, not quite 4, but I can see it getting there over time.
Quite liked this
I pledge allegiance to the funk. Really fun music, lyrics were very funny.
I couldn’t for tge life of me find this, so I listened to “One Nation Under A Re-Groove” by The Clinton Administration and it was awesome. 😎
It's a lot of fun, with lyrics that keep surprising.
Meh, I've heard funkier. The last track was really good though
Was only able listen to the title song
Funky, but too repetitive for my tastes.
For what I could hear on Apple Music. 1 song! It was good funk. 3 stars
Ideal if you’re in the mood for some funk
Really, really liked the cheering/chanting in the last 40 seconds
This one’s not available on Spotify… bummer. YouTube to the rescue. 1978 funk. I graduated high school in 1978, and was not especially big on funk at the time.. I was a rock and roll guy, with narrower tastes than evolved over time. So this simply wasn’t on my radar. And this specific album has never made to ears. And it absolutely grooves. It’s certainly funky, but the grooves dominate. The songs all pretty long, mostly 7 minutes or more, and they mostly hang around their grooves. It’s all very enjoyable, if not especially memorable. Not a lot of hooks to bring you back. This would be a good album to have on at a party, or cruising. Solid 3
One Nation Under a Groove Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?
I couldn’t find this album on Spotify so I had to listen one song at a time on YouTube. I can’t handle the ads, so I didn’t get far. That said, I get what it is. Classic funk. I’ll give it a lightly-informed 3.3
Definitely more rock forward, but has some disco and progressive sounds as well. Not my favorite -- feels a little frenetic, but that's probably what they were after. Good, but I prefer "Maggot Brain" or deeper still "Mothership Connection" 3.4
I like it, I just can’t get all the way there with it. 3/5
A new one for me! I like the funky, 80s vibes at the start. Some cool talking in the middle. I like the use of whistles in first track, weirdly! This gets a bit dull and monotonous towards the end tho… strong start, weak finish. Maybe needs more than one listen. Will give the band some attention tho for sure: Couldn’t find the album anywhere except YouTube.
Always enjoy a bit of Funkadelic, though prefer Maggot Brain as an album. Regardless, great music to have on in the background to keep things ticking along nicely. (3.5)
Funky, but would have been better if it was more concise, most songs felt like they rambled on too long.
Suena fenomenal. 3/5.
pretty much has everything you expect from a p funk album, a true album experience from start to finish
Very funky! I did not like that one song that had the guy saying stuff and everyone else repeating it. But overall pretty good. I probably wouldn’t listen again though.
i liked most of the album but whatever song had the weird shit chants was just bad
fun!
Album incomplete on Spotify
Songs are definitely too long for my taste, but they're fine. Besides, this album gave us "Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)", so it can't be bad. Best Song: Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?! Worst Song: Cholly (Funk Getting Ready to Roll!) Fried Ice Cream: A Reality Available on Spotify?: lol no get real >:P Album Score: 6/10
I wanted to give this a higher rating -it’s fun and shows great musicianship - but it started to lose me around the midway point. I waffled on the rating; going off the idea that they’re based on my first impression, I’m settling on a 3 for now. On another day, perhaps a different score.
Unfortunately could not give this entire album a listen. Only one song; not enough to give a full critique. Strange it is not available on Spotify...
The album started great and just kind of meandered on from there. I didn't dislike anything here but I also don't think I'd come back to it as an entire album.
I really like this record. I love how hard it rocks. This is pretty metal, just listen to those guitars.
First time listening to Funkadelic. I like some of it, not too fond of the silliness
Only one track available on Spotify.
Progressive! Wish I could hear it on something other than youtube though.
A lot of fun. If I did drugs I could see falling in love with this. For whatever reason this wasn't available on YouTube Music, so it's technically going to be hard for me to revisit it. But even if there wasn't a stupid technical reason I don't imagine this would get regular play from me.
One thing I’m finding is that i really like funk however this was not funky enough for me, strangely enough. Far too many rambling smooth passages that just don’t do it for me. Disappointing tbh
Weirdly mostly missing from Spotify, but also something I've had on physical media in the past. Boogie wonderland. One album under the same groove.
This is some fun enjoyable funk music. George Clinton is pretty remarkable as an artist. Eclectic talented and not afraid to push boundaries on sound. This was good but the latter half of the album was mostly just instrumental jamming out. It was overal good but I may have gone higher if there was more funk throughout. 6.6/10
Great music, not my listening style. Super jazzy tho
Lots of reviews say this is funkadelic's best album. I disagree. Uncle Jam Wants You is better IMHO, but I grew up on that album. Maggot Brain is listed as a bonus track. Always think of Ken's Show on WFMU when I hear.
I don't love this, but thank god for Funkadelic anyway.
Pretty good album with great guitar playing, but I am not very well versed in funk and some of this album was just odd. Maybe it's a George Clinton thing
''Do you promise to funk? 'Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!' rond kantje 1 op iconische wijze af. 7,5/10 Highlights: Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?! Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)
ALLES IS FUNK. Vervolgens zingen ze ook de hele tijd over Funk (Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?!). 7/10 Highlights: One Nation Under A Groove Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad
I couldn’t listen to it on spotify but i like their other stuff
Tough to track down the full album anywhere so had to pull each up on YouTube. A cool mix of funk and social message. I enjoyed the music but found myself vibing more to the earlier songs by them that would come up next on YouTube. 3/5 album but I’ll definitely check out more by them.
Totally enjoyable funk. I don’t have enough knowledge to know where this falls on the pantheon of great funk, but it had great musicianship, great grooves, and was a lot of fun to listen to.
It is what I’d expect from the name of the band and the album title. Funky, groovy, some charmingly weird lyrics occasionally. It was a lot like the Parliament Funkadelic album Mothership Connection for me, enjoyable but didn’t completely hook me into the sound.
I tend to prefer instrumental funk, and those types of track really shine in this album (moreso funk-rock I guess, especially Maggot Brain). The other tracks weren’t that memorable (save for the title track) and kind of drag on a bit. Maybe a product of its time, as a lot of these early funk records are a bit similar in that vein.
Would love to rate this but I can only find the title track on Spotify
Couldn't listen to it on Spotify so I listened to their other hits.
Another painful YouTube listen! I found that many of the tracks sounded similar to each other, and some were a little too long (most were a little too long). A fun listen
I'm not usually into funk - but this was pretty fun (for about the first half!) Some of the songs went on a bit too long and a bit too much shredding in the later tracks for my taste. No idea which song was which because I had to listen through youtube so they all sort of ran into each other.
Yep. That's Funkadelic alright.
It is, indeed, funky
only one track in the UK
Not bad. It was a good Monday morning listen
Only two tracks available on Spotify...
the Beatles if they were Brazilian. Disfrutarlo, me gustó.
Great bump to start the work week
Played very well instrumentally and a good mix of Rock and Funk, but I did not like the songwriting that much.
Not my thing but not bad. That ending was insane. High 3.
Not sure why this isn't streaming somewhere. I thought this was a good but not great album. I like the muscianship better than the vocal performances. I don't think this stands up as well as Sly and the Family Stone.
Nice, exciting grooves which tend to waffle-on a bit too long…
Gifted players, seeming to have a ton of fun together. Like a block party in Washington, D.C. Obviously funky, soulful, innovative and joyous. Not my favorite music to put on intentionally, but enjoyable and toe-tapping.
Enjoyable but I wasn't super engaged. Spotify had removed most of the tracks so I am trusting the youtube playlist was correct. Really enjoyed maggot brain at the end.
i had to go to soundcloud to listen to this
HIS NAME IS GEORGE. GEORGE CLINTON. AND HE'S GOT 38 DEGREES IN FUCKIN'
started really good but the rocky stuff that came after was kinda boring
Didn’t hate it.
Album #7 Unfortunately I was not able to find the full album on my music streaming service but I can imagine since it was released in 1978 that it had some pretty cool dance/disco/funk songs on it and the 11 year old me probably would have been grooving out on the dance floor at school to it.
Was not able to listen as it is not available on spotify
The grooves are tight. There are a couple of the songs that I really like. For me though, most of the songs play a little long, but I have to recognize the band for the funk pioneers they are.
Funky, africano.
Bluesy and great! I'd love an alternative version of this that's full instrumental.
Definition of funk, not my bag to much, but definitely worth a listen once. 3.2, only for personal taste and repetiveness.
I really enjoyed this one. It's a shame it isn't on Spotify.
Nice
Some cool funk tunes here. Last song is awesome.
Decent
3 Coming off the heels of Maggot Brain, I was actually kind of disappointed with this one. It’s not bad, but it just doesn’t have the edge to it that MB does, and overall, I feel like I was hit with a dose of more mediocre funk music. Maybe mediocre isn’t the right word because this is still very much filled with wacked-out George Clinton diatribes about mental diarrhea, groovallegiance, and whatever the hell promentalshitbackwashpsychosis is, but I just don’t feel like the music is quite on par with the lyrics and themes. It gets close at times, but never quite enough to fully pull me in. Maggot Brain was great because it felt like a psychedelic trip in music form, and this felt more like a trip to the dance club. That’s not to say I’m anti-dance club per se, but it’s not what initially turned me on to the group, and I can’t help but feel like they’re holding back here. You’re even teased with a bit of their older, more psychedelic sound with a live recording of Maggot Brain’s title track, and it’s once again the best track on the album, but it’s hard to give this album credit for just doing the same thing over again. It’s a cool live performance of the track for sure, but it’s not quite as transcendent as hearing the studio version for the very first time. Maybe this is just more evocative of Parliament’s sound, and that’s great if so, but keep it out of my Funkadelic - I’ll go give Parliament a listen when I’m damn well feeling a groovy, dancey mood.
I like parts of it but I just wasn’t in the mood for it. Although I really did love maggot brain. A good stoner song.
Didn’t love this one, just not my groove.
Here's a weird album. First of all, it's not on the streaming services, so I had to listen to it on YouTube. That doesn't really say anything about the quality of the album, but it might say something about its cultural significance. Anyway, as far as sound goes, this album's solid. It is some good funk music. The instrumentation is quite good and well-produced. The writing could've been better. It didn't exactly stand out to me that much and the nonsense moments like in the fourth song lack substance. The singing is good at times and somewhat forgettable at others. Finally, this album is just too long. There aren't very many songs, but they all go on for so long. Overall, this is an okay funk album. Not the best I've heard, but not particularly bad. 3/5.
I liked it, I remember hearing funk as a kid and always had a fleeting interest but never really followed up by listening until now
it sounds too relaxed and laidback, and as result kinda boring to me. ive always preferred music with a bit of energy to it, but also im aware this just isnt really made for me as an audience in mind so its hard to be too negative on the album
Good stuff, bit too repetitive for me at times but mostly nailed it throughout specially on Groovallegiance which was my favorite track.
It's alright, it had 2 numbers that saved it. If Maggot brain didn't slap then it'd be a 2. It's not particularly my thing, and it was a bit repetitive and long
its fine, not great. Was probably better for its time. 3.1.
I was only able to give this a bit of a listen due to it not being streamable right now on Spotify and most of my Youtube results were track by track. Oh, and dropping by the day on a busy holiday none-the-less. Is this to somehow be the story of this record? Once popular now obscure? I hope not, because what I heard was a nice slice of funk.
This one was interesting. I greatly prefer Maggot Brain to this album. This felt more like an abstract painting come to life, with a lot of vibes and themes, but a general lack of cohesion that tied me to this album and most of the songs, and a very weak middle. The back half of this album is just incredible though, with some of the best guitar I've had the privilege of hearing recorded, and saves this from being a 2 star album. It's so good I'm tempted to give this album 4 stars, but will sit in the happy medium of 3. I think this lands between culturally important and genuinely masterful but the weak points and abstractness really sink the album for me.
Solid production. This was awesome through the first half then it lost me, brought me back and lost me again at the end.
I was disappointed honestly. With a name like Funkadelic, I was expecting more...funk. The songs were too long, without enough variation within, resulting in 8 minutes of repetitive motion. It's okay, but only if you aren't paying too much attention. As a rock album though...it almost works too. This album was less funk, and more "guitar solos with punk elements" The guitar playing was honestly unhinged, in a good way, but it could also be too impressive sometimes, focusing too much on laying down fat solos, instead of keeping some beauty in the music. Maggot Brain avoids this, but a lot of the songs had me thinking "okay, that's enough" I wish I had liked this.
Just Good
Good ol funk
Funk’s classic
Eh
Funky! But the filler is forgettable. 2.5/5
Groovy
I really wanted to like it since im into funk. Just nothing really stood out or make me make the face.
As Funkadelic as the name suggests! I had an annoying time getting to this album cause I could only find it on youtube. Spotify didn't have it for some reason. Makes me wonder how much music I'm missing out on because Spotify doesn't have it :( 3.5/5
Not bad but funk takes a specific mood to enjoy, one I haven't been in lately
Controlled chaos that's both genre defining and genre bending - bringing elements of jazz, rnb/soul, reggae, and rock together for a 45 minute funk dance party. There's a real house party atmosphere to this - like a performance going with a constantly rotating cast. Each song is loaded with ideas pulling it in different directions - vocalists come and go, guitar shredding fades in and out, the bass sets up the main beat then goes for a melodic wander, there's a guy standing next to the mic just making little comments, synths and horns have cameos for quick riffs and solos - but all it coheres around a rhythmic idea and tonal center, under a groove. The constant guitar solo over the top is such a funny touch, it's like a guy noodling along at home to an album accidentally got overdubbed onto the official release. The party vibe means it's pretty unfocused: the songs are a good time, but also a long time.
Vocals are disoriented; not on beat. Other than that, really funky. Favourite song: Into You. Who Says A Funky Band Can't Play Rock sounds like The Beatles, Revolver era.
Some fun stuff in there, but I got bored of the repetition.
Good album, enjoyed the up beat music.
spotify doesn't have the entire thing, which is ig a bit sad, cuz I was into the mood for something groovy. Either way, it's pretty okay.
I can get with this. Def not something I’d have on repeat but I vibe heavy. Would rather but at 3.5 but sticking to 3
groovy, a couple bangers at the end but that's about it
Not bad, standouts include One Nation Under A Groove, Into You, Cholly, and Maggot Brain (Live).
I didn't like it as much as their other albums
Good background music, but quite repetitive.
Not my thang
really boppy, I had a good time listening to this whiles studying for my las ever uni exam hopefully
This was hard to get hold of, was not available on Spotify in our country. I think I was a bit too focused while working to take this in properly, I barely remember anything about it. But it did feel nice to have in the background. Gut says this is a 3.
Fill in soon. 7/10
It was fine, nothing that really caught my eye
Starts funky and then shreds your face off in the end.
Funky, africano.
Definitely see where the inspiration of a lot of the rap artists I like
Just another funk album, with all the songs going on way too long. Some parts sound nice, but it's hardly an experience. Ain't no James Brown. 6/10
Lots of rather good funk. Shame I don't really like funk.
Groovy. Thought Side Two was much more interesting than Side One. I dig the lengthy, spontaneous style. I could sense the immense foundation of talent even behind the weirdest moments of improvisation. Couple songs I wouldn’t skip on shuffle and altogether it makes me want to explore the depths of live funk and bluegrass albums from late '70s. 6.5/10
Couldn't find the full album.
- I want to be a citizen of the united funk of funkadelica. - I think each track stands out on their own and the lengths are great too -the guitar is so good -This was hard to find though as it's unavailable on like every streaming service so I had to listen via YouTube video
The title track has it all: sing-along vocals, banging rhythm track, funky synth. Even though its seven and a half minutes long it feels as compact as a pop song. The rest of the album is varied in song quality and feel.
Loved how funky and groovy this records is. Nonetheless… forgettable.
I bet there's more to this than I'm hearing right now, tired after picking up an extra shift. It was ok but I didn't really react to it. I found the sillier pieces a little annoying. music: not given the attention it deserves. ( -_-)
6/10. Fun beats but felt bored halfway through.
A good album. Some songs I would listen to again
I really liked it at first…
I couldn’t listen to this on Spotify, so I listened to it on YouTube and there was no track listing so I’m not sure what song was what, but I really liked the very long guitar solo in one of the songs near the end.
I'm of two minds on this one. It was funky as hell, the band slams. I love the attitude. I love the vibe. It's a party in recorded form. And while it's selling the band way short to suggest they didn't work on the songcraft, it sounds like they could have walked in, turned on the machines, and started playing the first they thought of. It's sooo loose and meandering. So I dig it, but when I come to quantify my experience, I don't know what to say. A 3 seems low, but I'm not at a 4.
Funky and groovy and song titles say
This album was funky and fun, but for whatever reason it wasn't grabbing me on this Monday morning. I'll re-listen to it someday.
Not available for streaming
I'm usually a fan of funk but some of this record was just a bit too experimental for my tastes. You could tell that in some songs, the artists hit a groove and just went with it. Some of it worked but some didn't. The last maybe 3 songs on the record though are really what make it stand out. The guitar in each song is just fantastic and is what pulls the listener back in. I gave this 3 stars because of those last few songs. Otherwise this is a forgettable album with nothing to offer.
It’s groovy!!
Excellent vibes but a few songs don’t hit off
Not my cup of tea, but fun anyways
Solid album for people who like to rock and groove. Music you can easily bop your head to with sick guitar and lass lines. Ultimately though it doesn't seem like an album I'll be listening to on repeat
It's fine -- good grooves and understand the pioneering aspect of this album, but not one for a frequent rotation.
Fun album - shame it's not on Spotify because I would've listened through it a second time.
Listening to the first song, I have no idea why this is on this list. It really must have meant something back in the 70s. The youtube comments do talk about how influential and spectacular the music was and still is. The significance and popularity might not be as prominent anymore as I have never heard of this album and it’s not on Spotify or Amazon Music. I kind of like the style. Not music I would typically listen to.
Track 1 - Meh Track 2 - Okay Track 3 - Very good Track 4 - Pretty good Track 5 - Very Good Track 6 - Pretty good Track 7 - Okay Track 8 - Good Track 9 - Good
3,5
Fun listen. Liked it, but not enough to add it to my collection
Not on Spotify. Good intro to funk
Very funky!
Kaziku, skąd ten bit? 3.5
Funky. No notes.
Fun at a first but it got too long
Weak 3. Kind of fun, kind of out there. Feels more like a vibe of the decade than a timeless, meaningful album.
lots of noise but in a good way.
Some great stuff here, but very little of it really hooked me. Also, way more talk about poop than I normally like in my music.
Really good stuff as you’d expect from any Funkadelic project but not one of their most memorable outputs
I did not this that much
This is good but I like the earlier stuff.
For some reason the YouTube music is linked to unavailable song. But I found the whole album as one song so ill give my review based off of that Obviously groovy, way to use all of the keyboard options haha. This first song is pretty stretched, probably wouldn't see it live just for the song but maybe the crowd and vibes Im listening to kind of a reage vibe, this song is not my favorite. Im getting the feeling that all of these songs are gonna feel stretched, and im not really in the mood for that. I skipped around the album a bit to get some of the flavors, but I didn't listen all the way through I'm usually more into the funky phycadelic vibes so ill give it a 3. I like the the usage of lots of voices and Waka guitar and groovy bass. Looses points for songs just being a bit too long and stretched, not quite enough variety to deman ld my attention for as long as it wants. More of music to set s vibe, and less of music to directly listen to for me.
ohhh something different this time album not available on spotify funkyyyyy I really enjoyed it, super groovy, but the songs do sort of melt into each other Knew maggot brain previously
Only really liked half the album but that has a better hit rate than some i've listened to. those tracks had a great sound and would have been rated quite high if those other tracks didn't go as weird or repetitive.
Super groovy (though I could only listed to a few songs of the album as others were unavailable)
Album only on YouTube, was choppier as a result. 7/10. Great guitar, funky sounds, a bit slow for me. Ends in an edited down Maggot Brain, extended original version on the Maggot Brain album is better, listen to that album instead. I'm probably missing the cultural significance of this album.
Not a bad funk album, although that’s not my thing. I found it interestingly mellow at times.
Feet don't fail me now! Not uniformly great, it turns out I don't enjoy toilet songs any more than I enjoy toilet humor. But overall a very fun record. Pretty much the experience the cover art promises.
Kaksi raitaa nappasi heti täysillä: One Nation Under a Groove (käytännössä mahdotonta olla tanssimatta, vaikka on juuri herännyt viikonloppuaamuna aikaisemmin, kuin olisi halunnut) sekä Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock - ja levyllä on muutakin kuulemisen arvoista. Toisaalta viimeisellä kolmanneksella aloin toivoa koko homman loppuvan, koska haluaisin antaa tälle kolmosen, mikä on aina vain vaikeampaa, mitä pidemmälle jamit etenevät...
Yeah it's nice, no on Spotify though
Però t'has de deixar
Cool stuff
Great in places
Pretty cool, with a wtf song in the middle
I’m not sure I’ve heard anything by Funkadelic before. I’ve heard Parliament who I believe are basically the same band, which bodes well for me (Flash Light is an absolute banger). Let’s listen and find out! Songs I already knew: None Favourites: Maggot Brain, Lunchmeataphobia This was a little up and down for me, but with more ups than downs. The bass lines are super funky throughout, and the vocals are pretty great. The times where my attention would wander were when they leaned a little too far into the strange side of music. A cursory look online says that Funkadelic are the more psychedelic version of Parliament which I do think makes sense here. I enjoyed this album, but I think that Parliament are probably better suited to my tastes.
Interesting album. This went from classic funk to a Pink Floydesque instrumental at the end. Good album to relax to.
Listen
Expecting it to be more funky to be completely honest, the one nation under a groove made me think of Ice Cube and perhaps it's because this was such a building block for so many musicians I was underwhelmed. Still rating on how much I enjoyed listening right now as always and there; enjoyed it but overall left lacking. Also - so many of these reviews focused entirely on Spotify and how if it's not there they can't listen, even with the world of music at their fingertips people are more closed minded than ever. 3.3
Wasn't able to listen, not available.
Enjoyed less than I thought I would.
This album isn't on Amazon Music, however, I do know the title track. I listened to it on YouTube and it's a real dance funk masterpiece. Smoot and funked up. This song was #478 on the RS Top 500 Songs of All Time.
Apple Music didn't have this. Listened on YouTube. If it weren't for horrible (and horribly long) poop song titled Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad, I'd give this a higher rating, because I enjoyed the other tracks. They were nice and funky, with an original sound, but for some reason, they decided to make that one 11 minutes long and taint the entire thing. I wouldn't mind listening to this again and skip the poop.
Starts strong, and the funk elements were adequate. Adding rock is innovative but I dosed off a little
3 stars
The tracks are very long but the groove is very groovy
I have 5 Funkadelic albums on vinyl, and this isn't one of them. Of all the good ones to pick, I don't know why they chose this in their 1001 list. It is one of the least Funkadelic albums in their catalog. It is a good funk album, but it is mostly missing the psychedelic funk rock element that made them so good in the early 70s. Not that there isn't some decent guitar parts, but the absence of Eddie Hazel is conspicuous to say the least. This is more of a funk soul record. A good one, but not what I'm expecting when I pick up a Funkadelic album. The groove is still excellent throughout and Bootsy lays down some nasty bass lines. The title track was good, but a little long. Always gotta love replacing fuck with funk though. Just for the funk of it. The highlight for me was the live rehashing of Maggot Brain. Even without Eddie, this version is excellent. A bit more succinct and less spaced out than the original. If this was under another band name, I'd probably rank it higher. For a Funkadelic album, I'll say 6.5/10.
One Nation Under a Groove is the tenth album by American funk rock band Funkadelic. This was Funkadelic's most commercially successful and highest praised album. It has been certified platinum in the US. Ever since listening to Funkadelic's third album Maggot Brain from this list site, I've been anticipating getting a chance to listen to another one of their albums. Funkadelic really knows how to make a good, funky sounding rock album. I liked this album maybe a little more than Maggot Brain.
First I love the early Funkadelic albums, the first 3 are amazing with Maggot Brain being one of the best albums of all time. This album is kinda ehh. By this time there was no distinction in sound between Parliament and Funkadelic, gone was the fuzzy Hendrix like guitar solos of Eddie Hazel and the more in face vocals. It's ok but not amazing.
Although I lost interest toward the end, there was enough high energy to keep me in it for most of the album. Also: so many funk puns.
I really liked some of the songs, and really didn't like a few of them. Excellent bass and guitar work which kept it interesting. It was a fine listen.
Enjoyed
Varied and funky, obvs
Groovy shizzle
pretty good 70's funk sound.
Just a bit boring ay
The guitars are certainly top notch and it's place in history is clear. And it's funky as hell. But I just felt like it didn't go anywhere.
No esta en Spotify.
Any album that open with the masterpiece One Nation gets an extra star as the starting point. But where to go from there? You can't keep up the quality for an entire album, and it shows here. Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock picks up the pace slightly. They are SPELLING OUT the message of the album, in case it had passed you by. It gets a little self indulgent with the ice cream thing and strays into South Park territory. There was a little too much going off here to enjoy the album as a whole. Bonkers, spirited.
Fun record with great Bootsy bass playing. Can't argue with the notion that fried ice cream is a reality
Christ, put the bong down.
Fried ice cream is a reality.
Leuk soul-achtig album, funk!
Nou, vooruit.
classic funkadelic, but not mine
Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers)...
Gotta be honest I didn’t love this one as much as I was expecting. A lot of nonsensical lyrics with a few gems. One that stood out was something like “what if the sandwich eats you?” Honestly that was probably the highlight of the album for me, along with that guitar solo Jacob mentioned. I’ve enjoyed other P-funk albums way more than this, especially Mothership a connection.
Ujevn - to eller tre stjerner?
I like funk, but only sorta liked this.
Quite enjoyable, not my music of choice though. Liked hearing bits that are referenced in not contemporary music.
Arguably one of the more difficult albums for me to rate. Mainly because I had to search out every single song because I couldn't find the whole album. The songs are looooooong. But they're pretty darn good. At least I think they're better than some of the stuff that I've listened to here. Did I mention how long the six songs are? And promentalbackwashpsychosis is very representative of the album.
3/9, 33%
If jam bands played funk, this would be it. Very long and repetitive on some songs but overall good
Dunno really, bit all over the place and the 10 minutes of scatological humour really dragged it down
Good funk album.
I was expecting to love this, but I merely liked it. Gets a little too weird and meandering at times for my taste. But they're still incredible.
The entry fee to this album is your promise. Your promise to both give and surrender to the funk, the whole funk, and nothing but the funk. And that promise leads to unity, and unity leads to your mind being freed. And most likely your ass, too, of course, but we already knew that. We are, after all, in Funkadelic Nation. So reprint the fiat currency. As good as this album is, whenever I hear those raunchy guitar solos, I feel Eddie Hazel's absence. I'm not really criticizing the album for that... it's just. Yeah. Hazel is such a presence that he is missed in the music when he's not part of it. That's just me, though. The strength of Funkadelic is in its numbers, and Mike Hampton does a fine job here. How you respond to the fact that fried ice cream is a reality is probably a good indicator of how you respond to life on a daily basis. It's either wonderful or a horror show. By the way, this is the album that has the live version of "Maggot Brain", so do yourself a favor if you've never heard this track. Pour yourself a drink, sit back, turn off your phone and your lights, and be transported.
Extremely funky…
Notes: - Classic R&B/Funk band - Most of the songs on here are 6+ minute long jams - Do some of them go on too long? Maybe, but its great music to just zone out and bob your head to - Second half of this album definitely hits better than the first Fav - Maggot Brain - The guitar solo on here is super emotional and expressive - Funny enough, sounds like it could be a pink Floyd song Least Fav - Who says a funk band can’t play rock? - I wish they leaned into the rock element more and it would have helped sell the song 3/5
It's not a crush for me.
Enjoyable enough, I guess. That song about jail buddies was a real eyebrow raiser.
Very fun and funky. Worth a listen for sure
Well it's groovy and funky, I guess, but there's only so much funky grooving I can care about.
I do not have the funk
1) One Nation Under a Groove: Absolute classic track 2) Groovalleigance: More relaxed but still funk flows. 3) Who says a funk band can't play rock?: Nice riff and flow, does what the track is called 4) Not attempting title: Quite chaotic, the fear of being eaten by a sandwich, fried ice cream is a reality 5) Into You: More funky and relaxed, like this one. 6) Cholly: Nothing to note. 7) Maggotbrain: back to the chill 8) Lunchmeatphobia: heavier rock here, gives a nice break. 9) PE Squad/Doo Doo Chasers: Pretty nice instrumentals to end off the album. While there are some classic tracks here (mainly the title track) and I did enjoy the chaos and randomness of some tracks, for me a lot of it sort of mixes into one and that I can't distinguish between tracks, but I like what I heard.
First album I've had that isn't on Spotify. Its a fine set of extended grooves. TBH it kinda droned on in the background (with YouTube adverts!) but didn't have any head turning moments.
Favourite track(s): Maggot Brain Not what the band name suggests. Very rocky, groovey from time to time as well. Some tracks sadly do fall flat though - just because they seem not to commit to either funk or rock. That's probably the whole vibe of the genre and maybe even what the album is most liked for.
it was alright, funky, if i may, but nothing super special.
Started out too funky for me. Then I heard Who Says a Funk Band Can't Play Rock?! and was completely swept up by the groove. The following track was exquisitely mental and suddenly I was all won over. Then it got a bit too funky again, before finishing quite well. I've got a bunch of 4 star reviews burning a hole in my pocket but the albums are just too darned inconsistent lately. Another 3.5 is the best I can do.
Fun, but I can only handle the funk in moderation.
If you want to funk it up, then this is a good place to find yourself.
Mikið fönk. Smá progg í fönkinu. George Clinton er náttúrulega fönkmeistari. Ágætis fönk.
Wanted to like it more
first listen very funky but also drags on
As I expected a very groovy release. Definitely worth a listen but didn't quite grab me as I would have wanted.
Another one removed from Spotify - sadly don't have this one on any other format (apart from Maggot Brain on vinyl). Saddens me, as this will keep some people from discovering great artists like George Clinton and Funkadelic. I'll just have to give it a 3 from memory and tracks that I know from the tracklist.
I feel like the author of this book's knowledge of funk music began and ended with reading George Clinton's wikipedia entry. As a result, so does mine. Which is ok for me, because I'm not writing a book about it. But fuck you, Dimery. Anyway, Clinton is clearly pretty damn talented. This album was too long at an hour, but it was also fairly cruisy and worked well as background music while I played Stardew Valley at 4.30am. Had a jam feel with some of the more guitar-based tracks. Not on Spotify but it is on youtube if you search. 3/5.
The funk masters at the end of their peak. I had a strong Funkadelic phase and this was up there, just below Mothership Connection and Maggot Brain.
Too funky for Spotify it would seem, but there's an individual track version under George Clinton's account on youtube. Damn this is funky, rocky and for Funkadelic pretty focused. Good stuff.
Keeps your attention and while there aren't standout tracks, there is no filler at all.
While I do not object to funk (not in the least), I will raise a complaint at this album's tracks overstaying their welcome, length wise. At the same time, the album can pass for good background music. I'd say it's a force for good. Favourite track: Maggot Brain, because I'm a sucker for lengthy guitar solos (and I know I'm self contradicting here).
Good album but the track Promentalshitbackwashpsychosis Enema Squad (The Doo Doo Chasers) is very irritating and brings the rating down
