A really good funk album, enjoyed almost all the songs. Was nice to listen to something I wouldn't usually pick.
Funky as.
Man, I usually get more into the early 70s soul but these guys were clearly heading down a more pop-soul path that got real ugly by the end of the decade. It's not bad, it's just not as good as some of their contemporaries.

Very cool music. Groovin' bass, funky hammond organ, great guitar riffs. This stuff has been sampled by every hip-hop producer out there. Stand out tracks: Listen to the Music, Summer Breeze, That Lady.

Found the sample for Kendrick Lamar’s “I” with the first track “That Lady, Pts 1&2”. Should note I am familiar with the Isley Brothers but have never actually listened to an entire album, their vocals and instrumentals are as smooth as I would expect them to be. Album makes me feel good and happy, almost like a summer day.

First new to me, really good album
It's hard to judge songs you've heard literally thousands of times. But "That Lady" still jams! If I'm going to nitpick, this is a short album at just nine tracks and 40-ish minutes. But six of the tracks are covers (if you count "That Lady"). Mind, the covers are unique, and not just re-recordings with different personnel. But you'd still hope for more originals.
A classic, very specific mood. I like it, but I don't think I would sit down and listen the whole album again soon.
Isleys are seriously under-appreciated, both as hitmakers and players. There's some great playing here and rich interpretations on the covers.

Great soul album
Just a super funk + soul album, with some fantastic vocals and great guitar riffs. Not usually a big fan of cover albums but The Isley Brothers just make it their own that it's hard to believe it's not their songs.

First listen. I love the Isley Brothers. Heard many of those songs many times but it was good to listen to that album.
I love me some '70s-style funk and soul, so this album was right up my alley. "That Lady" is a classic, but it was the only song on the album I was familiar with, minus the original versions of "Listen to the Music" and "Summer Breeze" (they do justice to the former and improve on the latter). My favorite track was "What it Comes Down to," which is '70s soul to the bone. Good stuff.

Summerbreeze is such a great song. I didn't know they had a cover of it. The whole album is great and I'm glad to have listened to it. Who's The Lady is the obvious song from the album. I'll definitely come back to this album and listen to more of their discography.
While I have a lot of respect for R'n'B and the musicians in or in vicinity of Motown, I could never get into it myself. But this one is so funky and jammy, it's just so fun. "That Lady Pts. 1 & 2" with those keyboard licks just fucking slaps, If you were there has that great bass lines and tasteful guitar runs. Still a lot of ballads for a dull toneless fuck like me, but eh

Solid palette cleanser of an album, very great vibes on this one. It transitions between funky and soulful seamlessly and the guitar tones and wah-wah pedals are in full bloom here. Lots of covers which was surprising, but seems like these guys have a massive discography so they've earned a little songwriting break I'd say. Really enjoyed this, I can't imagine anyone listening to this and hating it.
While I was familiar with the Isley brothers, I had not previously listened to this album. I didn’t know they covered the doobie brothers, I enjoyed that (listen to the music), along with that lady 💕, lonely tonight, and summer breeze.
Great listen. I love the Isley Brothers and was really into "The Highways of My life" and "Listen to the Music". "That Lady" is of course a classic as well. Somehow, I never made the connection that Kendrick samples that song for "I" until now. Both songs are great!

So that's where that electric guitar sample on Beastie Boys' "B Boy Bouillabaisse" and Kendrick Lamar's "I" came from! Nice. Such a distinctive sound. But it's not the only ingredient that makes this recipe of "That Lady" right, since the five minutes of this groovy opener fly by without you noticing the song was that long. The sixties Isley Brothers are long gone by now, here comes a funkier version of them, and that version makes sparks on this first track. Too bad this was not the case with the useless James Taylor cover that follows that great opener. Gosh, is he a bland songwriter at times--my best guess is that the inclusion of this boring ballad was a way for the Isley Brothers to make a commercial point and reassure their label after the change of sound implied by the inclusion of three new family members into the band. But maybe they did genuinely like this dud of a song, who knows? Eh, nobody's perfect, I guess. Fortunately, things pick up nicely with the next two tracks, "If You Were There" and "You Walk Your Way". The first is especially impressive with its rolling rumble upon the bass toms, nicely contrasting with the sweet and longing feelings displayed in the rest of the vocals and instrumentation--including that ARP synthesizer already used to great effects by Stevie Wonder in "Superstition" the year before. Apparently, The Isley Brothers shared the same studio with Stevie for this record (he was recording the seminal *Innervision* while they were working on *3+3*). All those accomplished musicians must have had very interesting conversations while they were there. Closing side one is a cover of the Doobie Brothers' "Listen To the Music". Odd that the bass line on the original slaps harder than in here (but Tiran Porter was indeed a killer bass player, so I guess it's hard to reach his level anyway). It's still a great cover, though, thanks to those ARP synth flourishes. Opening side two is "What It Comes Down To", a rather convincing track, in the vein of Al Green and Stevie Wonder, once again. The drums are still doing that sort of rollicking thing they did on "If You Were There", and their rumble is good enough that you're happy to hear the band use that trick again. Next is another cover, "Sunshine (Go Away Today)", this time from an obscure folk-rock singer named Jonathan Edwards. By all means, listen to the original, because The Isley Brother had a lot of fun completely turning it on its head. Their version is far more adventurous and enticing than Edward's one--the vocals are especially effective--and there's even that weird synth glissando west coast gangta rap would pillage two decades later. And after this is... another cover, " Summer Breeze", once again by another fashionable soft rock act from those days, Seals And Crofts, admittedly far more more obscure in 2022. Unfortunately, and contrary to "Sunshine", the original is in this case the superior version, The Isley Brothers finding themselves unable to bring anything interesting or worth noticing in their own rendition. Besides, it's a little too easy to cover so many hits from the year before in an album, a habit that was not frowned upon yet during the sixties, but that quickly looked suspicious in the decade that followed. If by this point, you're starting to lose interest in this overlong review, this might not be so bad, because I also lost interest in the record myself in the middle of side two. I therefore don't have much to say about closer "The Highways Of My Life", this short ballad being an original composition by the band that doesn't say much either, whether it is musically or lyrically. All in all not a bad album, even if it's quite patchy, hit-or-miss for me. I can see why it had such an influence on other musicians--the already famous Isley Brother following the footsteps of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder when the latter gave up mellow stuff in favor of harder grooves. But I'd rather go to those household names first when it comes to that overall genre... The masters of funk at the top of their game, completely in control of every note. Both the originals and the covers sparkle with vibrancy.

Things kick off on a high note with “That Lady, Parts 1&2”, a rockin’ slab of funk propelled by a phased out, fuzzy guitar lead. It’s no coincidence this song was chosen as an opener, you can tell it’s a hit from the opening guitar riff. However, immediately after, the album veers into more traditional mid-tempo R&B territory for the next 3 tracks. It’s kind of a jarring change of pace. The songs are not bad, but the difference in energy between That Lady and these tracks is palpable. The pace picks up again with a funky, clavinet heavy cover of the Doobie Brothers “Listen to the Music”, “What It Comes Down To”, and the dark and funky “Sunshine (Go Away Today)”. A cover of Seals and Croft’s “Summer Breeze” turns up next. Like “That Lady”, it’s noted as “Parts 1&2” which really just means they’re going to stretch out the groove at the end and give us some more of that sweet, sweet fuzz guitar. Unfortunately, that section of the doesn’t last quite long enough and the song begins fading out about a minute before it should’ve. “The Highways of My Life” a laid back, soulful tune ends the record well, but I can’t help feel like this record could’ve been greater. When the band leans into a slightly more aggressive style of play and dips their toes in psychedelia, they’re at their best on 3+3, imo. Fittingly, a “3” out of 5.

I'm usually too dead inside for these funky, fresh albums, but this actually got me grooving. The guitar work is fucking incredible. Like Hendrix or Gilmour levels of incredible. Some songs are kind of repetitive, but "That Lady" and "Summer Breeze" are certified giga-bangers. Shame because I was looking forward to making a 6/10 joke (haha get it? 3+3 is 6. That is literally the funniest thing anybody has ever come up with), but it's more like an 8/10.. so a very strong 4/5 on this scale I guess.

3.5 Really looking forward to this one. First thought was “why am I thinking of mops?” My second thought was “the drums are on fire holy crap”. Soul/funk never disappoints when it comes to the rhythm section. This album almost makes The Doobie Brothers and Seals & Croft sound cool. The vocals are also great with all the range of emotions displayed, paired with some super cooool harmonies. The slower love songs are a little cheesy and boring but all in all I can see myself coming back to a lot of this album l Stand-outs: Swiffer Commercial Song pts. 1&2, If You Were There, You Walk Your Way, The Highways of My Life
2.5 I bet this album got you laid in the 70s. Overall, it was a fun taste of the past that didn't outstay its welcome. It transitions between funk, soul, and rock pretty seamlessly, though that being said, it didn't stand out apart from me to similar records of the time. That Lady is a bit too thick of a slice of 70s cheese for me, though Summer Breeze was a really cool jam out that must have been fun on 70s drugs. If I'm on 70s drugs, I'll keep this album in mind. Probably the definitive version of ‘Summer Breeze’, and generally lot more fuzzy guitars and psychedelic rock vibes within a soul/RnB framework then I expected. Overall though, a pleasant if mostly unspectacular album.

Only recently gotten into to the Isley Bros but I had no idea that they wrote so many amazing songs. This was a pretty good album and had a lot of the big songs that I do know but I am not sure about it as an album. Monster musicians

7/2/2022 - ALBUM #156 Today's Album: "3 + 3" by The Isley Brothers - As far as I can gather, the Isley brothers are a pretty legendary soul-funk trio from the early 70s, which typing now seems odd considering how well this album holds up when compared to a lot of it's contemporaries in the later 70s and early 80s. This album is somewhat of an experiment for the group, since they combined the efforts of the original 3 members (and 3 other family members providing various small parts) to an additional 3 guest musicians playing drums, tom-toms, organ, and congas, thus the name 3+3. In terms of the album itself, I think it's really enjoyable from start to finish. I think from the first 30 seconds of the opener, That Lady, it's clear that the production of the project overall is going to be stellar and it really does just sound great the whole way through. I think the auxiliary percussion from the guest artists liven things up and give it this sort of latin vibe to the otherwise super funky grooves being laid down on these tracks. The vocals are also a huge highlight here, with Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight being a standout for me, with lots of heartfelt balladry. There are a lot of songs in the middle of the project that do start to feel a tad more like filler, and not because they're terrible on their own, but just that when compared to tracks like That Lady and Summer Breeze, tracks like the pretty sub-par cover of the Doobie Brother's Listen To The Music just fall a bit flat. Speaking of Summer Breeze, however, I think this song alone saves a lot of this album for me. It's just so smooth and enjoyable that it feels like it pulls up the end of the record into feeling like this magical experience. The chorus is so goddamn catchy and the lyricism in general across the track is just so carefree. I should also mention that both this song and the opener That Lady come in a 2 part package, with the first part being a radio-friendly banger, and the 2nd part being an extension of the song with an absolutely wicked solo section and by that I mean genuinely some of the best guitar soloing I've heard. I do also appreciate the flow of this album, with many tracks seamlessly entering into the next like from If You Were There to You Walk Your Way. The closer of the album also carries this momentum into a pretty stellar finish, with a lot of the thought provoking themes of relationships and looking back on your decisions and communications being brought to a head, with the lyrics comparing the many paths in life to highways. It also has a lot of really sweet sounding synths and elegant piano passages that just create such a bittersweet atmosphere for a perfect goodbye to this record. Overall, I think this album was pretty fantastic, even if there are a few songs in the middle that stand pretty strong on their own, but simply don't compare to the way this album opens and finishes. Give this one a listen if you like Funk and Soul and I guarantee this will be your favorite album for a while. Instrumental Solos are sometimes to long and drawn out but still cool. Good tempo and beats and give a good feeling with most songs. Lyrics are usually pretty good but could sometimes be better. Would be nice for a couple songs with a little more energy with them.
Listening to the interview, I was intrigued to hear that Jimi Hendrix played with them for a while. Look up Testify parts 1 & 2 on YouTube, also features James Brown I think. A lot more soul that this record which was OK as background, but overall felt a bit flat to me

Really hard for me to come at this album objectively as I've owned a copy for years, and I play it frequently. Very frequently. An astounding collection of music, originals combining with a deft choice of covers. Even when it's not their own material, the Isley's put their stamp on it - would anyone disagree with me that this is the definitive version of 'Summer Breeze'? What really gives 3+3 wallop is Ernie Isley's guitar, beamed in from outer space. It's truly a sound I could enjoy all day. When he's absolutely wailing in the latter part of 'That Lady Pts 1 and 2' I am in my happy place. What a life-affirming album!
So much fun. I thought this was gonna be the kind of album that would get me pregnant, but I was happy that there’s a lot more variety here than just the baby-making jams I anticipated. Not sure I’m ready yet to call this version of “Summer Breeze” the definitive one, but I had never heard their take on “Listen to the Music” and I’m prepared now to pretend like the Doobie Bros. version simply doesn’t exist. Doobie who? I’m already doing it. Wonder if they ever figured out who that lady is tho’.

The Isley Brothers is the group that managed to score a Hot 100 hit for 6 decades straight. They're also one of the most sampled artists in hip hop. Play any of their top hits and you can name several songs that sample them, notoriously Biggie. But as for funk, this album offers few weaknesses. There's a fair mix of pre-disco funk rock and slower soulful songs, with many somewhere in between. I'm a huge fan of the energetic front vocals with backing support and the various keyboards, whether the organ, clavinet, or synths. The guitar really shines when it electrifies. They redefine the covers as their own, still recognizable, yet fresh and exciting as they put their hearts into each cover. There's several songs I don't care for much, but only two I find purely boring. It's not the most impressive funk out of the 70s, nor is it even close to being my favorite, but you can't deny this album is full of great tracks that grab your attention, never drawing out its stay. Favorites: That Lady, Listen to the Music, Summer Breeze, The Highways of My Life Least Favorites: You Walk Your Way, Sunshine

It's pleasant enough background music but doesn't lift itself beyond that, and darts between different styles so much that it lacks cohesion.
I like this - it's gentle, easy listening in the most part. It's aged pretty well (other than the odd lyric that is slightly iffy in its attitude to women), but it doesn't offer anything particularly spectacular or lifechanging. 2/5.
I just like the track "Sunshine", it sounds cool, rest is too sappy sounding for me.

This brought me back to my childhood as this style of music was in heavy rotation on one of the two modern music radio stations we got in town. Not my favorite back then or now, but as my dad used to say “ You don’t know what you love, you love what you know”. Some really good guitars - especially on the Seals and Crofts cover of “Summer Breeze”. Better than a three , but not close enough to round up.

Good & easy listening album…. Back to the 70’s
What an album. I was looking at the tracklist before I listened wondering if it was a cover album with Listen to the Music, Sunshine Go Away, and Summer Breeze. And now googling I realize that those are covers mostly which makes me feel a little better since I liked the originals better. These weren't bad but I think the only OG I had heard was That Lady but I'm reading even that was a cover too.
Hell yeah! Love the Isley Brothers, and this happens to have my favorite song from them, their rendition of Summer Breeze. And how fitting to get "That Lady," the song sampled by Kendrick Lamar on i, the day before Kendrick drops his new album. Anyway, this one is excellent, this is the kind of R&B/soul stuff that I really, consistently enjoy. Fantastic grooves all around. Favorite tracks: Summer Breeze, That Lady, If You Were There, What It Comes Down To, The Highways of My Life. Album art: Pretty ordinary band photo, but the guys look cool. Are they really all brothers? 4.5/5

I mostly nothing this. It's not bad (although the lyrics are lame) but it's very samey and I really struggled to engage with it or distinguish one track from another. Funky
There is a lot of funk and groove on this album, with a few recognizable songs that have made their rotation throughout pop culture, notably in commercials. This album is fun, it is soulful, the Isley Brothers sound as though they are having fun and that sentiment is certainly expressed on that first listen. "Summer Breeze" features a significant guitar solo towards the end of the song that beautifully complements the soulfully jazzy tone. Musically, the album is complex and groovy and it is expertly melded with the vocals, from the lead to the background this is a master's craft in good sounding music. The recording is warm sounding yet each instrument has its distinct contribution while still complementing each other smoothly. A decent pair of speakers/headphones will duplicate this, and one should do so.

This was a great album. It was a nice mix of funk and R&B. That said, there were times when I wanted more funk or more R&B rather than the two interchanged with each other.

Leaping into a new record label after over a decade in others, 3+3 finds The Isley Brothers finding themselves tangled with some of their most recognizable songs and most effective hidden gems. You may find them pointless, but the interviews tacked at the end helps get The Isleys and their impact on music across and serves as an insight to their trajectories and progress. 3+3 indeed. Strong start with "Who's that Lady" but the rest of the album was, dare I say, boring. Could see it hitting me different in another mood or context. The "Summer Breeze" cover was deeply inferior to the original and should have been left on the cutting room floor.
I want to like this more than I do but it really does sound like a group on their 11th album; struggling to redefine and update their sound. My favorite thing on the album is the guitar work, especially that fuzzy phaser tone.
Oh shit I do know "That Lady", didn't think I knew any of this group. Overall some nice funk but beyond That Lady it didn't grab me as much as I wanted. I can see people disagreeing though.

Lovely sound of summer soul. Classic singles "That Lady" & "Summer Breeze" are classic sunny afternoon in the garden music. These are great soul songs of the 70's throughout. took me back to my youth! Rightfully on this list I believe

I listened to this on Friday, I'm rating it on Monday and I just had to scrub through quickly to remember anything about it, so I guess it's not the most memorable album. Musically pretty good though.
Le fameux album contenant la pièce That Lady que j'ai entendu pour la première fois samplé dans la pièce B-Boy Bouillabaisse: A Year And A Day de Beastie Boys sur l'album Paul's Boutique et plus récemment dans la pièce I de Kendrick Lamar sur l'album To Pimp A Butterfly. Cette pièce avec le fuzz et l'effet sur la guitare est vraiment superbe. Les toms sur If You Were There sont agaçant par contre. Je comprends l'idée d'essayer des nouvelles choses, mais ça ne fonctionne pas ici. La reprise de Listen To The Music est intéressante et groove pas mal. Je vais sûrement revenir à cet album. À ramasser dans un bazar de vinyles usagés.

Good, had no idea how many versions of summer breeze there were.
This project has introduced me to a lot of great soul albums that I haven't previously heard. This one doesn't really click for me, unfortunately. I've never been a big fan of That Lady, and the rest of the album didn't do anything for me either.
I liked this one. The guitar work is really good, particularly on the tracks 'That Lady' and 'Summer Breeze' which are the highlights on the album. The instrumentation elsewhere is also enjoyable. Generally the album has a relaxed feel. Overall I'm undecided between 3.5 and 4 stars, but I think this is worthy of 4.

This was very enjoyable. Some great funk and soul. If I saw this at my record store I would pick it up.
Some great motifs, i can see why it is oft sampled, but is less than the sum of its parts

Very pleasant
Great album. Musically the band is really tight. The Isleys have a wonderful pop sensibility with a smooth vibe few of their peers can touch. Quite a few covers on this album, some brilliant ("Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight," "Summer Breeze") and some just fairly good ("Sunshine," "Listen to the Music"). On the flip side, I was today years old when I learned that "If You Were There" was not an original Wham! song. Loved it. Summer Breeze - Another example of a five star song on a three star album. Rolling through the jasmine in my mind is one of the most evocativley beautiful lyrics I've come across in this list to date. Fricken excellent lead break too. Shame the rest of the album doesn't hold up.

22nd February 2022 Listened on the sofa while working. Had a chilled evening for our anniversary where we got pizza and watched the ugly truth! Disco funk of the highest order, sounds like a sweaty summer night.

This was an a-okay listen. For how much after it sounds like this album, it's so difficult to think of a timeline without the Isley Brothers.

Couple notable songs but repetitive album.
Not as good as I was expecting it to be - but admittedly I had very, very high expectations. More soul than funk. The talent is extraordinary, but I'd prefer their later stuff.

Who’s that Lady is a classic and the rest of the album was pleasant to listen to. Really a 3.5 in my book but I enjoyed it overall so a 4.

One of these perfect 70s soul albums that never grow old. Some great originals and some great covers. (Would be nice if "The Heat is On" is also on the list but I suppose it isn't.)
Of course I've heard of this group, but I am not super familiar with their music. It sounds like they know how to play, but this album just doesn't work for me. It all sounds too restless, too busy. So unfortunately, 3 stars is the best I can do.
This is real good stuff. Summer Breeze is a fantastic cover.

A very fun, funky and soulful record. Favorites: "That Lady", "Summer Breeze", "The Highways of My Life"
Short, to the point, very peppy at points but also mellow and sweet at other times. Little bit of a shame that almost half were covers but i enjoyed them except for the cover of the Doobie Brother's Listen to the Music. That Lady. A Classic very much liked. Guitar wailing almost used like a vocal track Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight: Beautiful, soulful and understated singing performance and simple but effective playing, accents the singer well. Elevated version of the Taylor classic. If You Were There: Another Funky Song, sorta basic but does the job well. Not at all bad. Almost as if a Four Seasons song were to be funk. You Walk Your Way: Was waiting for a little gospel, one of the best ones on the album. Uplifting. Gospely with out being too much. Very subtle and sweet. Listen to the Music: Prefer the Dobbie Brothers version didn't do much different except for dialing the funkyness of it up by one point. Highways Of My Life: Bass playing strong, nothing revolutionary but strong and also very accentuated. Sunshine (Go Away Today): Very nice bass playing, very nice. Liked that the bass was the focal point of the song almost throughout. Better than og. Summer Breeze pt. 1 and 2: Like the small influence from asian traditional music in intro. Elevates og into another realm.
Peak Soul, with intriguing shadings into rock. Hardly any filler, my only quibble being the lyrics mostly really aren’t very deep (the metaphors in Highways... bordering on mawkish). First rate overall.
Good jams, really enjoyed this one’s nostalgic smooth sounds. 4

Really good funky sound
Great album, sad that the only streaming version I found had a bunch of weird bonus tracks (I recommend only listening to the original track listing). That Lady and Summer Breeze are obvious highlights.

Sounds exactly how you expect it to. Good representation of 70s soul.
First track banging, popular one, Dave Dew used to play it. Whole album is so funky/Souly/feel good that it feels hard not to give it a 4. But I am listening to it on a sunny Spring morning, so maybe that helps. Summer Breeze another banger and DD fav.

High Funk, and nearly impeccable pop music, too. Plenty of songs are songs first before launching into extended, ecstatic, instrumental flourishes. All while staying trim.

Who's That Lady slaps. Some of the covers are smooth as hell. Others seem like they took the sheet music and plugged it into a funk rock Chuck E Cheese band. It's the longer jams that really do it for me. If they jammed out a 15 minute Lady I'd be in heaven. B
I was really giving to this album, it’s like the bridge between Marvin Gay abd the Doobie Brothers, or a black version of the band. “The Lady,” despite being co-opted for a shampoo commercial with dogs singing “who’s that lady” that loves in my nightmares, is a a good song. But then, really quickly, this album careens from a solid album into a covers album. I can’t grade a covers album high no matter how good—except Santana Abraxas, but that’s the exception that proves the rule—it quickly dropped from verging on a 4 to verging on a 3. Good musicians, lots of fun arrangements, buttery smooth voice, but covers. 2.
So funky! "That Lady" is a new favorite. As for the rest, I really loved their electrified versions of early 70s chestnuts. I definitely enjoyed their "Listen to the Music" more than the original and "Summer Breeze" is so smooooooth. I love the instrumentation in this album. This put a whole bunch of needed soul in my step today.

This was so fun! Love the extended version of That Lady with its wailing guitar solo and the other original songs especially You Walk Your Way and The Highways of My Life. And then there are a bunch of delightful covers that I wouldn't have expected to work but absolutely do. I loved the soulful Don't Let Me Be Lonely and Summer Breeze (more wailing guitar!) and the funky Listen to the Music and Sunshine. Terrific addition to my library. I'm really loving the records from the early 70s that have been showing up recently, new-to-me albums from familiar-to-me artists. Great fun.
Love the early 70s synths. Knew a lot of the songs, although not in this form. “That Lady” is great. Was fun to hear their spins on “You Walk Your Way,” “Listen to the Music,” “Sunshine (Go Away Today)”, and “Summer Breeze.” Will add several of these songs to the library
Songs you've heard a bit, voice gets a bit tiresome
I like this album a lot in terms of its composition and sound, but it's hard for me to give it the score I feel like it deserves because most of the songs on the album appear to be covers. This wouldn't be so bad if they weren't covers of very popular songs. The Isley Brothers do a great job of making the songs sound good and fit into the context of the album (Sunshine is a good example of this), but either including more original work or highlighting less popular songs by other groups would have been better 3/5
This was an excellent first album to start off this listening adventure. The drums were tight the whole time, the bass was on point and there were three similar guitar solos with fuzz woven into the mix. I thought this album was produced well, I really enjoyed the panning on the last track in the beginning and the keyboard part later on in that same song was sick. The vocalist is brilliant and can hit these high notes that was drawn back and very enjoyable to hear. This album would be best making love to your partner down by the fireplace in a log cabin in the winter.
Strong start for the album, good rhythm and catchy songs like that lady and if you were there. The slower songs don't feel out of place and help keep focus on the album. Not sure how I feel about the cover of listen to the music. Feels different enough that it can grow on me bur I don't know if I can place it above the doobie brothers version. The second half isn't as solid as the first but it's still good. Overall 4/5

Good album overall, the "extra" content on the reissue just makes it seem bloated and repetitive. Outstanding musicianship. Their cover of Seals & Crofts classic is better than the original IMO.

Solid R&B, lots of toe tapping tunes. Seems extremely well produced overall. Listened on youtube music at work. Got me moving on every track. At the start of this, I wasn't enamored, but man, this is SOLID. 4.5/5.

Pretty good stuff. Good mix of funk, R&B, and just grooveyness. But, the best songs are covers. So a bit of a knock there for lack of originality.

Hard to fault, but James Taylor's original version of 'Don't let me be lonely tonight' is much better, as is The Doobie Brothers' original of 'Listen to the music'. But their versions are OK and the two singles are great.. The guitar on 'whose that lady' is just epic!

The problem with early funk is that it's still close enough to its roots that it has the stank of disco on it. The bits of this that were funky were really funky. But there were so many bits that were cheesy, gross disco to keep it from being a good album. Not enough to tank it completely, though. The funk keeps it afloat. But only barely.

That Doobie Brothers cover was an especially fun gem in this already very fun album. Unfortunately, that one set of Swiffer commercials completely ruined the song That Lady for me.
As a fan of "Awaken, My Love" this was a very cool exploration of the Ancestral DNA of that album, and stood strong in its own right

Brilliant album. Like a greatest hits record - but nah this is just our eleventh album. Phenomenal funk, toe tapping, major vibes, genius musicians.

This was an awesome album. Great vocals on top of great production. Really loved the Hendrix inspired guitar and synth work.

it was okay, i did enjoy the covers but also i didn’t think it was anything i’d never heard before. i loved the voices and i loved the sound but it didn’t really stick out to me.
This is a great and easy-entry selection of classic 70s soul+rock+r&b. Starting right out with "That Lady" - a high-energy uptempo song which can sit alongside any rock song of the era. I'm not often a fan of albums consisting of many covers (and this has no less than 4 that are/were already well-known) so it docks it a bit for me...but these are done in such an *Isley Brothers style* that it's hard to believe they're not originals. 7/10 4 stars

The Isley Brothers absolutely kick ass always
I wish *I* were a brother of the Isley Brothers so that we could all play and slay together. Just classic track after classic track and total guitar mastery. What's not to love? I think if I were being honest, I would give this a 4.5. It's not quite a perfect album to me. But it's much better than a lot of the 4's I've given out on this list, so a 5 it shall be.
The covers they did of other artists didn't do much for me. You can hear some elements of funk creeping in some of the tracks....very indicative of what many bands were sounding like in the 70s. The vocals are top notch, but I prefer their earlier stuff.
Wow these boys can sing. And some really great tracks too. Who's that Lady. Love there version of the Dooby Brothers Listen to the Music and Seaks and Crofts Aummer Breeze, never had so much soul. A fine fun album 3.75 🌟

Such a great album, with iconic songs and incredibly distorted guitars, in a good way.
God this is a relief after all the psychedelic dad rock, even though this is pretty psychedelic funk. Great start, bopping in my office seat to 'That Lady". "Summer Breeze" put me in a great mood. They really remind me of someone I can't put my finger on, maybe that my mom listened to when I was a child - stevie wonder? ... yep, reminds me of Superstition.

As smooth as butter. Can almost guarantee at least three children were conceived while this album was being played.
Wooooaaaaahhhhhh listen to this music. Very funky, lots of soul. Great for a sunny morning drive. The kind of music that puts you in a good mindset for a day. The guitar work in some of the songs absolutely rip.
That space rock guitar tone and soulful vocals on "That Lady, Pts. 1&2" make for a swell intergalactic ride. However, as a whole, the album failed to keep my attention. ⭐⭐

I've seen this billed as "Funk", but it's more "Soul". A bit of wah-wah, falsetto at the right times, some fret-hand muting etc., but I really miss the horns. Not a trumpet in sight!
