Reviews (page 12 of 12)

18 same songs with lyrics that are just repeating title and some other random sentences in same tone and pace with random distorted highpitched guitar wanna-be solos in the end as the song fade away. It was boring but not unlistenable.

Not my jam

This was disappointing. Nothing stood out other than the tracks I already knew, That Lady and Summer Breeze. I like Listen to the Music, but it was a worse version than the Doobie Brothers' original.

Its all just too floaty for my liking. I can appreciate that the music is good and the vocals are solid, but there is nothing that really grabs me. I spent the first two songs trying to think what dong they reminded me of, at which point I spotted Summer Breeze down the tracklist and the riddle was solved. Things pick up slightly with Listen to the music and What it comes down to, but otherwise there’s just Summer Breeze of interest and that pays the price for being licensed for adverts meaning i keep expecting a cheesy voice over to come in.

Didn't enjoy this. Just don't see the point of music like this.

Ei tää ny

Kind of unsure, actually, why this one made the list. I think the Isley Brothers are great and definitely have their place in music history. But the album has almost as many covers as originals. And while I like that they always put their own spin on covers, it just doesn't seem like this is an album that should be considered on a greatest albums list. It was fine, but nothing spectacular for me.

Not my genre, but I can see this record being very influential. Summer Breeze sounds like a Metal solo...

Groovy but feels a bit bland to me

Classic icons of American song

??? funkyfunky ? c

pk faire des interviews dans un album

Great production quality, especially for 1973, but this brand of funk/soul was a little too busy for me. The vocal approach began to grate quickly, and the music offers up little breathing room or much in the way of dynamics within songs.

Señor vibes, me gustaron algunas canciones, tiene canciones repetidas

Great and important album, but I found my focus drifting off to other things being easily distracted.

Really solid band but I was only amazed by the first track.

It's funky, sure, but has it aged well - no. It doesn't have as many hooks as some other music of this genre for me to get my toe tapping. Middle of the road.

I wish I could give 2.5 stars because 2 feels a bit low. I just think there's more interesting funk records. That Lady is just absolute stank of course and there are other good moments.

I like a bit of funk but this, not so much. There are some classic hits on here but it leans a bit too much into soul for my tastes. It’s fine, just not my thing really. That Lady is the best track for me, and it’s best in part 2 which is instrumental and presumably gets cut for the radio edit.

Funky at the time, but the next day I don't remember listening to it.

Heaps of these random albums where they aren't bad but not sure why they're on this list. 2.5.

Is that interview included? Too bad, I don't appreciate that.

Boring

Le genre d’album aussitôt écouté, aussitôt oublié…

eig ganz ok so im Hintergrund, abrr nervige interview parts zwischendrin. wirkt irgendwie zu selbstüberzeugt

I was psyched when the album kicked off with some fun funky vibes, but I gradually lost interest as it went along (except for Summer Breeze of course).

Middling good lp. Two towering tracks surrounded by disco slop. Their 50’s rnb & mid 60’s Motown eras were better.

Meh not a huge fan

Bit too lyrically obvious and love-oriented for my taste. Preferred the uptempo tracks, especially the drums on If You... Pleasant enough, but Part 1 of 'That Lady' would surely have been sufficient?

*1973 *So there are 5 huge songs on here, but That Lady is the only one The Isley Brothers wrote. The other 4 are covers: -Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight - original was James Taylor -Listen to the Music - original was Doobie Brothers -Summer Breeze - original was Seals and Crofts -Sunshine (Go Away Today) - original was Jonathan Edwards *Mellow, chill album - good for a lazy Sunday morning. *Prefer all of the originals. Would not revisit. RATING - 6/10

Eh, some grovy track but not for me. I was also very confused by the length of this album and how much of It to actually listen to so I apologize if I missed something. Hated Summer Breeze. 4/10

Pfffff ….

It didn't blow my mind

Classic funk

I enjoy funk to an extent, but this was too FUNKAY for my taste (yes there’s a difference).

Not really my jam

Too much noodling

Funky, bit not my type of music.

Nicht so schlimm wie erwartet.

Funky, but there's only so much of it that I can take in one sitting. It was probably a complete mind fuck in the day tho.

Wasn't working for me. Did not like their covers. Made me wish i was listening to the originals.

I know this is objectively a good album but it is not my scene and it just bores the shit out of me. I am sorry :(

Quite new with an interview stuff, reminds me of Bobby’s album. The music is not bad. But not my type.

Different than expected. Good quality and fun moments, but overall not really for me. Starting to understand that I'm not into soul. sunshine (go away today) is amazing though. Best tunes: that lady, you walk your way, listen to the music, what it comes down to, sunshine (go away today)

70's all over it. A wee bit Holiday Inn Lounge and Earth, Wind and Fire. I feel the band is funky fun but the falsetto at times seemed too much. LP suffers from sameness. Liked the redo of The Doobie Brothers' "Listen To The Music" - funky syrup. The cover versions are the strongest part of this LP.

Did not vibe as much as I usually do with funk

The opening That Lady was pretty funky, with the sounds I associate with Blaxploitation films of the 70s, which is what I expected from the cover. However, the rest was all kind of bland.

This seems to be something of a beloved record for many, but I feel kind meh about it. Maybe it popped up and I just wasn't really looking forward to it, and I'm trying to shake that feeling now as I listen to it. Maybe it's got enough of a disco vibe that it's putting me off. It's also got a lot of 70's soul vibes to it that have historically never really done anything for me. The band is really talented: nice voice, solid guitar work (though he works the wah peddle too much; again, probably more of a problem with the style and time), some fun bass lines...I think I don't even dislike the songs as much as the styling. Plus, "That Lady" used to play during an ad for soap or deodorant or feminine products or something during the 80's, and it ran so often that now I can't hear that song without feeling like I'm being advertised to. I also think 3 cover songs on an original record is a bit much. It's a fine record, just not something I would ever choose to listen to. 2.5/5

Impeccably executed, but exceedingly dull. One thing that stood out was how much the hit singles needed trimming. Had they not been edited, I don’t think they would have been as popular. Not bad by any means, but nothing exciting either.

Too funky for me.

Light, warbling, tries to be sexy. Is not sexy. Album cover is sexy in the best way. Too smooth for me?

Some classic hits.

A bit repetitive

It's Your Thing is one of my all time favourite songs but late 60s and 70s soul just doesn't do it for me the same way as early Motown, etc..

70s mix of funk, soul and electronica. OK, but not my bag

The Lady was OK but otherwise I was disappointed

Couple great songs but didn't like the covers

Didn't overly grab me but some of the covers were unique takes.

Look. It's really well produced, great musicians. But cheesey.

It’s Elvis. Even this he married a 14 year old he’s the king

Fraco!

The covers were not nearly as good as the originals and the whole album was kind of just a walk

⭐️⭐️.5/5 So cool to hear the full record of such an iconic band. Not a huge disco/funk fan, but liked a lot of these songs. Just seemed to blend together after a few.

Fluffy old soul. 3+3; Four of the best songs are covers, I’ll give ya That Lady (but it’s really not good enough to carry the other originals). Not much here and no need for me to check Isley Brothers further. (1.6*s)

3+3(-3) is alright...3 decent tracks, 3 good ones, and 3 lamers. Some pretty run of the mill funk-soul. I recognized about half the album with some covers(?) sprinkled in. Final 3 tracks are the strongest making for a good wrap up. Not going after any of the Isleys work but the brothers straight pimpin on the cover...1.8 stars.

hmm it's ok

It's good for what it is but not my jam

I really wanted to like this and parts of it are good. The guitar playing complements the music when it's allowed to. Unfortunately this just drones on and blends together.

There're great. Smooth vocals. Rich soulful sound. But this isn't thier best album. One hit and a popular cover.

That Lady Summer Breeze The Highways of My Life

It's groovy. It's fine. I listened 2 times to this and it was a struggle to finish it. I guess I just don't like this kind of n. music.

Nothing wrong with this album but it’s not doing much for me.

I don’t get it. Even the famous song that leads off this album is a cover of themselves.

I’ll give a 2 since I gave Adele a 1

Started off strong, but I lost interest bout half way through…

I liked a couple songs Summer Breeze and The Highways of My Life.

Nice and easy listen but nothing remarkable. 2,5

Good artist but feels lazy

I don't get it. I find this so mediocre. The trio of cheesy covers - Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight, Listen To The Music and Summer Breeze - are terrible. That Lady Pts. 1 & 2 earned this album an extra star.

Like the music, not the lyrics. All songs were overt long.

Alright Bit forgettable Nice instrumentsls

Dinner party fare, inoffensive but bland.

This was not groundbreaking.

Previously on me writing about albums: "On an unrelated note, I'm going to my first-ever live concert on Sunday and I don't have weekend albums enabled ... I'm going to cast all of the psychic and cosmic energy within me out into the universe so that it can force this website to recommend Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots as tomorrow's album." My magic isn't as powerful as I had hoped, but I've heard good news from the people who taught me. Sometime within the next 992 days, Yoshimi WILL be recommended to me. A truly amazing display of power, if I say so myself. Anyways, I'm not really digging this one. It's superficially pleasing, but doesn't really have much else going for it - a trend that I am slowly beginning to view as synonymous with funk and soul. There's some good moments. I like the piano ballads, but none of these songs really squeeze as much as they can from their better parts.

Very soulful music that feels right out of the 70s or 80s. Definitely a vibe throughout the whole album. I recognize parts of Summer Breeze but other than that the album is new to me. Most of the songs are something I wouldn't turn of if they came on while listening to music but soul isn't a genre I listen to a lot either.

Good to listen in the background, but nothing special

Started strong with "Who's That Lady?" then lost momentum quickly with forgettable songs and sub-par covers. 2.5/5

Meh, it all kinda sounds same-y but that's probably the case with all music genres. This just isn't one I enjoy a whole lot. The last song was a vibe tho!

Not my style

Not really my thing, but I can appreciate the musicianship involved. Key tracks: If You Were There

They're good at what they do, but it's all a bit too smooth sounding for me. 2/5

aftur þessir geim (space) undirtónar wtf, minnir mig á daft punk bleeehhhhhh... ok nvm það er bara fyrsta lagið ekki alveg minn stíll en kann að meta þetta

Better than a 2, but not quite a 3. I would prefer an out-of-ten rating system to allow more distinction between songs.

This is not a cohesive album at all. It sounds like 6 dudes got together to jam on some songs they liked. Then wrote a few themselves. Then put them all on an album and gave no thought to how they sounded as a collection, or even the order. My rating of this album in no way reflects my overall opinion of The Isley Brothers.

The basis of so many cover versions. But - were the cover versions better?

Bit samey

There is funk. There is cheese. I’m sure some people love it. I don’t.

Só gostei da The Lady. O resto pareceu-me tudo demasiado meloso.

A decently fun and funky time. Not much I'd seek out again, but it was pretty entertaining while it was onnnn

Better than expected but still not my thing.

Meh. Not the worst thing to listen to.

Inoffensive.

Kinda fun but nothing I’ll be coming back to

I'm familiar with a handful of Isley Brothers songs (I've loved the Rod Stewart version of "This Old Heart of Mine" since I was a kid), but this will be my first time listening to one of their albums. I don't have incredibly high hopes for this album, but I've been wrong plenty of times during this project, so I'm curious to see what this album has to offer. Well, my low expectations of this album were unfortunately met. This album had some fun guitar riffs, some good organ playing, and some really good vocals, but the some of those parts was pretty much a snooze for me. The cover of The Doobie Brothers' "Listen to the Music" was interesting, but the rest of these songs just didn't bring any new perspective to funk music for me. This album wasn't bad, but it certainly wasn't good either.

Ok..but not my genre

I enjoyed this funky and soulful album. Lots of covers they put their own spin on.

Repeating songs? How is this on the list? Ugh

Who IS that lady, anyway? Is this just the same few songs over and over? Cover art 9/10.

Not for me.

Nothing special, but enjoyable enough.

Fine, but uninspiring/unoriginal for me. 2/5

Kind of a sleeper. It’s almost too smooth to really keep my attention and rarely has anything catchy or interesting lyrics to make me want to keep listening. 4/10

Like, all covers. Pretty disappointing.

Interesting choice of album to showcase The Isley Brothers. Not really the songs from their heyday, but just some tepid covers of others' hits. Love the group, but not crazy about this particular album.

Unkomplizierter Soul, nett anzuhören, ohne Wiedererkennung

This is not really my cup of tea. A little too 70s funk. Not really anything to latch onto or get excited about.

wasnt really my thing

Seems a dated and I found it a little boring. Two best songs are covers of better versions.

I wanted to like this album, and ‘That Lady’ was a great start. But it just devolved into covers that I’d rather hear the originals, some other instrumentally decent songs that were forgettable. 2.5/5

Jag är ju ingen soulgrabb direkt.

I'm not real familiar with the Isley Brother's catalog, so I can't say where this ranks among the rest of their albums. They're good, but the album seems a little lazy. It's 9 songs and I think 3 of them were covers. Otherwise, I don't have any real complaints. It's fine.

Too saccharine for my tastes by and large. There's some moments that hit, especially when it approaches more rock territory. Summer Breeze is a classic song.

Smooth and easy listening, not my favorite genre but smooth voices and groovy beats and clearly pioneers of doo-wop and soul and so much more.

Fairly easy listening but not something that I'd go out of my way to listen to again. Bizarre that there's 20 minutes of interviews at the end. 2.25 stars.

nothing terrible about this and i can see why so many artists have sampled it, but it’s really not for me. i wouldn’t listen again.

Too „sweet“ for my taste

Pretty good even though about half the album was covers. 2

Day11 - 1 good song 4 bad covers

The two best songs are covers. Lot of extra fluff on the album I didn’t really like. Not for me

Helt ok, liksom. Bare litt kjedelig🤷‍♂️ But I’m back bishes.

Lot of remakes of popular songs from that time. C-

look me in the eye and tell me music hasnt gotten worse lots of schlock too though

Wasn't blown away by the album just feels like generic funk music. I think the album in general is overrated

2.75 stars Favourite songs: - Listen to the Music - The Highways of My Life

Va et par klassikera her

Nice sound nothing amazing and a few too many covers that weren't as good as the original.

Just not my vibe

A bunch of covers I enjoyed less than the originals

So so album for a great band.

It was fine. I recognized some of the songs from samples. There were some good hits like That Lady and Summer Breeze. Not a huge fan. 1 or 2 stars probably.

Just decent

its dated

I never liked Summer Breeze so the chances of me liking this were slim.

Not fond of 18 track albums which includes alternate versions of the same songs, especially with the 3 biggest hits being covers! That Lady (funk cover of their own 1964 song) Listen To The Music (Doobie Brothers cover) Summer Breeze (Seals & Crofts cover)

Good music but it is not my style.

There’s nothing wrong here, but this is most definitely not my type of music. More than anything else, I was bored.

Toimii oman genrensä (tiettyjen) ominaispiirteiden ansiosta tiettyyn pisteeseen, mutta en koe pitkässä juoksussa tarpeelliseksi.

Enjoyed a track or two, couldn’t get into it overall

Eh, also not really my thing. Summer Breeze, Pts. 1 & 2 was nice but the reast I didn't really care for. But I can see why this album is popular.

Funk soul brother

Someone else here said that it’s just close enough to its disco roots to still suck. I’d argue it would suck at any distance. There’s a couple classics and a lot of fluff. Not for me.

Boring funk that doesn't leave a crease on your shirt.

Wasnt bad, but I already forgot it. a bit too long at the end.

The first song is really good, but the rest of it is pretty uninteresting.

If this album came out today, I don't think anyone would notice. While you should consider when an album came out, that still doesn't help this album. It's not groundbreaking even for its time. Half the songs are covers, and it's rare for a cover to exceed the original. Yes, the Isley Brothers took non-R&B songs and played them as R&B, but there are hundreds of bands who could do the same. I imagine you could walk in to a random African-American church and ask the choir to come up with an R&B version of a random song, and within a week, you would have something at least close to the covers on this album. The big hit, "Who's That Lady?" sounds like cheesy, black disco, like much of the rest of the album.

Likes: Groove and rhythm section are great. Guitar is fun, if a little simplistic. Keys getting in with the rhythm is neat Dislikes: A little boring and repetitive. Constantly sounds like the band is getting ready to go on a jam that never comes It’s fine, but not for me - I think this is one of those scenarios where it sounds cliche to me because it influenced and was borrowed by so many future artists

Im sure this was something special when it came out, but it just didn’t do it for me.

Sunshineee breeeeze

What It Comes Down To).

Great vocals and a mellow vibe but I was getting impatient about half way through.

Enjoyed this one.

Disco/funk kinda vibe. Listen to the music the hit single off the album

It really ruins an album when the link sends us to a "special" edition of the album... There's no need to listen to the tracks of interviews and stuff. I really wish Spotify would keep the original albums...

2 star

Not on my radar, fairly fine, wouldn't listen again.

Meh, that lady var ok

Starts strong but loses steam about halfway through and feels a little bit cheesy disco-y

That’s some juicy cheese.

2.5 I bet this album got you laid in the 70s. Overall, it was a fun taste of the past that didn't outstay its welcome. It transitions between funk, soul, and rock pretty seamlessly, though that being said, it didn't stand out apart from me to similar records of the time. That Lady is a bit too thick of a slice of 70s cheese for me, though Summer Breeze was a really cool jam out that must have been fun on 70s drugs. If I'm on 70s drugs, I'll keep this album in mind. Oh and hearing a funk cover of Listen to the Music was cool. Favorite songs: Summer Breeze, Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight

Funk, soul and rock all rolled into one. Perfectly ok, but nothing that blew my mind. Best: The Lady Worst: The Highways of My Life

It was okay.

It's pleasant enough background music but doesn't lift itself beyond that, and darts between different styles so much that it lacks cohesion.

I like this - it's gentle, easy listening in the most part. It's aged pretty well (other than the odd lyric that is slightly iffy in its attitude to women), but it doesn't offer anything particularly spectacular or lifechanging. 2/5.

It's unoffensive, but there's not much that stands out to grab your attention

I mostly nothing this. It's not bad (although the lyrics are lame) but it's very samey and I really struggled to engage with it or distinguish one track from another. The exception is the cover of Summer Breeze which doesn't really fit the album but is the best thing on it. Rating: 2/5 Playlist track: Summer Breeze Date listened: 29/04/22

It's fine. 2/5

ekki minn stíll

Clearly not my kind of music (unless I seek to quickly fall asleep)

Couple notable songs but repetitive album.

Undoubtably talented, but just not my thing at all.

Well, I’m going to go with a solid meh.

Not my style. Too fundamental maybe.

A little sleepy. Not my groove

Not to my taste

Not my thing.....

The covers they did of other artists didn't do much for me. You can hear some elements of funk creeping in some of the tracks....very indicative of what many bands were sounding like in the 70s. The vocals are top notch, but I prefer their earlier stuff.

That space rock guitar tone and soulful vocals on "That Lady, Pts. 1&2" make for a swell intergalactic ride. However, as a whole, the album failed to keep my attention. ⭐⭐

Not my thing.

nada que me vuele la cabeza

Inoffensive but too banal to suffer through so 'tis a 1 from me. Got halfway through the third song.

Forgot it was on. Apart from when the hits came on. Pretty mundane.

Balls are lost

An alright funk album. 3/10

I had to remind myself periodically that part of this experience is trying to appreciate music outside of my normal preferences, but this was one was rough for me. I don't get much out of the long electric guitar riffs, unstructured vocalizing, and noodly jam-banding which every song seemed to become as it went on, and half the album is covers of songs I know the originals of better and prefer. This must have been fresh at the time, but it all sounds like parody of 70s music to me. Best: "You Walk Your Way" Worst: "That Lady"

I didn't like it much

The first track (That Lady) actually put me off a bit tbh, both musically and lyrically. But a few tracks were genuinely lovely: Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight felt more balanced imo, with more space to breathe – even if it leans a bit too far into soul for my personal taste... I totally get why it's considered a classic. It's such a rich production. The psychedelic guitarwork is beautiful. In fact, each instrument on its own sounds great - the vocals as well - but as a whole, it didn't quite land for me. It all felt a bit overwhelming, like too much going on at once and I kept losing track. Probably not something I'll return to often (or ever), but still glad I gave it a proper listen.

👎🏻

18 tracks. Not really into soul, funk, or whatever, but yeah, there are some classic hits on here. Feels like a bit of a cheat with Pts1, Prts 2, single versions, mixes... so I had to lift and drop the needle to skip the repetition. Why the interviews at the end, you wouldn't do that on vinyl. In 1973 I was too much into glam rock for these to come onto my radar.

Nice musicians, but not for me.

Not for me. 1/5

Released in 1973. Genre of R&B, soul, and funk. 18 songs. 1 hour and 17 mins. It was just a completely forgettable album.

boring

70’s

Not my thing

2/10 not for me, stopped listening half way through. couldn't even bother scrubbing through all the tracks. It was on in the background and I was still bored 3-19-2024

Seeing the cover was my first impression was that I was going to hate this. Put it on and it actually started off okay. But by the second track it was already descending into hotel-cover-band that are asked to play quietly, so they don't annoy the people who are here to have a good time and don't want to listen to the awful music. Background music for weddings, maybe good for sampling on 90s hip-hop albums? One good thing is that Spotify scared me into thinking I would have to listen to this for over an hour, but it turns out half the tracks weren't on the original album, so I only had to endure 9 from 18. If this was the eleventh album for this band, just how bad were the first ten?! I'm running out of things to write about this album as rapidly as it runs out of steam. I'm going to give it a 1 star rating.

Banal-o-rama…

smooth trasg

I didn’t really like jazz before. I don’t like jazz having listened to half of this album (I’m sorry but I could get through it all). That is not to say this is a terrible album, just that I don’t like it.

Pretty poor

First listen Saved 1/9 Top track: Summer Breeze

3 + 3 = shit

Radio 2 tastic. Categorically did not need to hear this dross before I died.
